And Jake, of course it’s inappropriate. But when has NBC ever let that get in the way of anything?
Posted by: Mesquito | September 21, 2008, 11:09 am 11:09 am
Franken’s an alumn, and the skit was mostly pretty funny. It’s hard to draw a line between when politicians are barred/not barred — I mean, does anyone think that when Hillary Clinton showed up for her spot, she didn’t have the ability to rewrite or veto bits of her skit?
The Lies McCain storyline’s been in every major paper this week, it’s natural that SNL would pick up on it. Franken’s besides the point, they would’ve written it without him, too.

SNL,and late night comedy shows have just become another pro-Obama mouthpiece like CNN,NBC, MSNBC.
SNL is on NBC–The National Barack Channel.
Too biased to make fun of Obama, they want him to win, and fear being called racist. They aren’t worth watching anymore.

McCain I like, but his lobbiest I do not. Palin I do not…sorry, still giggling. :) ouch, my side hurts.

Like most of the pro-Obama media, SNL will lose viewers.
I think they forgot most Americans are decent fair-minded people.
When SNL made a joke about Palin’s husband “doing” his teenage daughters that was it.
They trashed Hillary last season and I see where they are going this season.
I will not watch them again–it isn’t funny anymore, it’s just plain hateful.

I’m afraid the skit gives Senator McCain too much credit for being clueless about what his campaign is doing. Much as we all excuse GWBush for all his sins based on the assumption that he is an imbecile.
Posted by: juliinjax | September 21, 2008, 11:19 am 11:19 am
Very funny. To be more realistic, they should’ve made John McCain angrier (in a foney, indignantly outraged kind of way).

Like Obama, SNL targets the young audience that is impressionable and easy to persuade.
Kind of the way BO, Rev Wright, and William Ayers chose to indocrinate young kids in Chicago.
It’s easy to fill their heads with all kinds of things–but the decent ones will walk away or change channels.

And not the hope BO is selling.

Of course it’s appropriate. In particular, many many of long-term McCain backers have described his add technique as pathetic and dishonorable. SNL is simply incorporating that public dialogue into their skit.
It’s fairly accurate. And appropriate.

Once again the so called liberal media shows its true conservative colors.
Well before being a “Dem senate candidate,” Franken was a mainstay on SNL. For man years. And now he’s a talk show personality.
So in all fairness, the headline of this report as well as several others, should read, “Ex SNL comedian and (current? or ex?) AirAmerica host returns to his Alma Mater to help craft McCain skit.”
Posted by: palinslist | September 21, 2008, 11:49 am 11:49 am
SNL’s GOAL is to be politically irreverent! The bottom line with any SNL skit: Did it work? Was it funny?
I laughed several times.

Excellent, excellent, excellent stuff. I’ve just seen the data that virtually all Republicans believe that Obama is a muslim. That is a lie of course — and provides serious proof that the base value of the Republican party is dishonesty, which is the point of the skit.
Excellent job.

Posted by: hanny | September 21, 2008, 11:52 am 11:52 am
So the media is allowing the Democratic party to directly write their material to help elect Barack Obama.
How much more in the tank for Obama can NBC be? NBC is no longer a news station but and official Obama fan club.
And the SNL skit was sooooo lame. (The actors – bland, faceless, no talents. Remember the good olds of Belushi, Chase, Akroyd and the rest of the crew.)
And Franken, unfunny as ever, no wonder Franken gave up on the humor game.

NBC is not just a leftest network but more specifically an OBAMA network. Spence the network continues to not try to be neutral in its politics I thank that the more conservative democrats and republicans should vote with their pocket books. Look at those that support Obams, they are willing to break the law by hacking to private email and post it on a blog. Oh, I forgot the law only apply to others and not to themselves. I don’t know about others but for myself I will do what I can that NBC needs more neutral in its politicts!!!!!!
It is supposed to be inappropriate. That is the whole idea. Get a life people. This is funny – under 8 years of Bush reign have we really lost our sense of humor too? Don’t let them take that away from us. We will need it as we wallow in the mess created by these old Republicans and as the Democrats try to pull our country from the brink of destruction.
Be honest leftists: If a main stream outlet, even with Frankenesq “comedy” treated The One with this disdain you would be screaming bloody murder. The hypocrisy is staggering.
Obama has lied and distorted again and again: 1. About McCain’s 5MM comment at Saddleback, 2. McCain’s not knowing how many houses he has (they are his wife’s investments and Obama is a millionaire from a couple of self-serving books, 3. About McCain lying at all – the sex ed add was accurate (ready the freaking bill), 4. That the sex ed bill was only about sensitizing kids to sexual predators.
I could go on and on…. the hypocrisy is staggering.
I would laugh with SNL of they had the guts to let their humor run both ways. But attacking The One is just not going to happen.

exactly what is the Bush REIGN. Or the Bush Doctrine.
1. Al Franken is disgusting
2. Not funny
3. Slight truth. Like Obama’s tax cuts for pedophiles. Just as true as McCain’s tax cuts for oil companies (in truth, a corporate tax cut for all)

How can you not see that the republicans have ruined our country, we have to take it back from them now.
Even these comments prove that they just want us to keep quiet, like it is ok for them to have the FOX crew beat up progressives all the time but god forbid someone should say something they don’t like.
I submit this: the closer we come to the election and with Barrack pulling ahead, the desperate MCCain camp will fall into the old tactic of making us scared…… Believe me they will do what they can to make terrorism the number one focus again. I wonder who they will get to do it.
Have we become so polarized that we’ve forgotten the point of political satire? Are we so far gone as to not laugh at ourselves? Good, bad or indifferent political satire keeps our minds alert for the inconsistencies in message and charlatans of character. Beware of those who can’t take a joke and stifle criticism, least you become the punchline.
It looks like one more network is pulling out all of the stops to defeat John McCain. The SNL executives appear to be drinking Obama’s Kool-Aid too.
It will be fascinating to see how they react if Obama gets into office. Obama is a committed socialist, out to remake the American culture and economy. Obama’s core constituency will clamor for a big piece of the American pie once he is in office, and where will the cash come from? Basically, it will come from anyone with a good job. No tax increases for anyone making under $250K? Please! That promise will not last five minutes. (Have any of Obama’s promises lasted more than a minute or two?) His words mean nothing. Just look at the socialists and anarchists he has associated with over the last 20 years. This will tell you what he will do in office. Look for a massive shift of wealth from the middle and upper middle class to those unable to make it in a capitalist economy.

I am writing on the 700 billion dollar bail out Sec. Paulson wants Congress to pass, again without any regulation or oversight! It seems to me that corporations are trying to save their own hides on the backs of the American people. We cannot allow this to happen to us again and again — corporations first, people never. And no one knows what loans belong to who and they may never know. How can that be? It sounds fishy and criminal. We cannot just go rushing into this maze but we must carefully try to find our way out that will benefit the people this time and not the corporations, who are only trying to save their wealth, their way of life. Trickle down economics does not make sense because in nature we build from the bottom up, etc. a plant, a tree, a child and even when we build homes or cars we start from the bottom and expand up or outwards and that is how we should model our business dealings and growth. We cannot work against nature’s wisdom and intelligence by hoping things will trickle down. It is just not sensible. We have a intelligent design through nature and we should use her model not man’s greed. It is very hard for me to trust the people who got us into this mess to be able to get us out of this mess. That too does not make sense!
How dare anyone question anything. How dare anyone exercise freedom of speech. How dare we criticize.
Posted by: Hang 'em High | September 21, 2008, 12:09 pm 12:09 pm
As a public figure, John McCain opened himself up to this satire by allowing his campaign to run ads which falsely quoted Barack Obama as calling Sarah Palin a pig, insenuating that Obama supports comprehensive sex education for kindergartners, and implying that Obama will raise taxes on the middle class. All of which, have been publicly debunked.
I believe our critiicism should be targeted at the McCain campaign for their clear disregard for the average American’s intellegence.
The problem with the skit is they only mock McCain. A clearer example of this type of ad is Obama’s ad on the spanish language networks that links Rush and McCain, misquotes Rush (contextually) and states McCain was anti illegal immigrants when his policies on this issue are in fact, completely opposite of where most of his party members and blue collar Democrats are. I have no problem w/ this type of humor when it is equal opportunity. That does not happen much on the MSM.

What a great phony outrage for conservatives to rally behind. Hey Zank, yes I do remember the good old days of SNL, apparently you don’t. Franken and his writing partner Tom Davis wrote many great anti-right sketches including brilliant parodies of Nixon, America’s worst president until you-know-who.
So Franken, a career writer and performer, should be forbidden from keeping ties with his past career?? I guess the only thing worse would be a Prez & VP from the oil & defense contractor industries keepging ties and running our whole damn country into the ground with their conflicts of interest. (And their party setting up the most lobbyist-fueled candidate ever and an unqualified hack from Alaska as their predecessors.)
Oh, that actually happened? In the words of Emily Lattella…never mind.
It’s a real shame when you’ve gotten too old to do the job anymore and no one you trust has the heart to tell you the truth.
No, I’m not talking about John McCain — I’m referring to Saturday Night Live. Remember when it used to be funny, meaningful and influential on American life?
I stopped watching it when they started mistaking body functions, and an inane opera about a sweater, and a monotonous cheerleading routine, and third-grade puns involving a “Mr. Schwetty,” and an endless routine about a cowbell … for actual humor.
I doubt that it has half the audience it used to. This is just the mainstream media trying to prop up each other’s sinking ratings as fair-minded Americans tune out.
Posted by: I See Hypocrisy | September 21, 2008, 12:16 pm 12:16 pm
The problem with David Atherton’s argument here is that he claims McCain has some kind of discernable policy, as in something that has not been wholly contradicted by McCain, himself, severalfold over the course of say, two minutes. McCain’s stance on immigration is as difficult to know as his stance on the economy or meeting NATO allies, or, well, jus about everything. You’re gonna trust this man? The straight-talk express crash full speed at the start of this campaign.

SNL is an extension of Obama’s campaign. It is so partisan it is disgusting and why we don’t want this network and Hollywood running this country. Keep it up. You will only send more voters to McCain.
McCain can’t use a computer because of his injuries in the war. What a bunch of idiots these people are.
He is smarter than the whole cast there.
I am an Obama supporter, but this crossed the line. All we need right now is some right-wing fanatics to associate this skit with the Obama campaign. Lorne Michaels, where were you?
Gee, What was McCain’s comment about the New Yorker cover of Obama, “He needs a sense of humor”, good advice John, take it and stop “whining”.

I don’t care what the facts are, I am going to listen the President of the United States because he couldn’t ever possibly lie to me. I’m going to listen to John McCain because he says he’s a maverick and why shouldn’t I believe him, I mean that’s what he says — who cares if every single news and fact-checking establishment out there, both conservative and liberal has called him a liar? Who cares if all he’s going to do is ensure that this country is no longer a world power but a third rate country? Go McCain. Go Palin. I’ll never think for myself. I’m a bigot. How could I have a thought of my own in my puny little head?
Mitch. Regarding the McCain ads you mentioned, please keep in mind the following: a. While the bill on sex ed may have been bland, the program it implemented was not. If you read it, you will find the sex ed for kindergarten inludes an awful lot of stuff I did not know until I was a LOT older and did not need to know at that point of my life. b. Yes, Obama’s comment about lipstick on a pig was overtly about McCain, but, everyone in the audience knew it was a back handed slap at Palin. They all laughed–I laughed–because I thought it was pretty slick. But, it was a metaphor used too quickly after Palin’s statement and had adequate “plausible denial.” But, you know and everyone else knows, the comment referred, secondarily, to Palin. c. Obama can not give 90 percent of Americans a tax cut. The Republicans gave 40-50 percent of them such deep cuts they pay virtually no income taxes now. The lion’s share of taxes are already paid by the top twenty percent of earners and the top ten percent pay an inordinate share of the nation’s taxes(20 percent pay 80 percent of the taxes or there abouts).
Further, on the tax issue, when you tax the “evil corporations,” you tax the poorer people and the middle class. Why? a. You reduce employment because the capital that goes to expansion which creates jobs, is burned up in taxes, b. you reduce the profit which pays the dividends which go to all our 401k’s and c. You increase the cost of goods which the average American pays to the corporation so the corporation can pay to the government which will squander the money with administrative expenses for virtually ANY program it runs in the 60-70 percent bracket. So, $1 in a government program funds about 30-40 cents of what it is supposed to do. No bargain.
The ads are pretty spot on.

VOTE smart and for Obama.
(The real JSB who posted the that I love this skit…is very funny…we howled! LOL)
If you seriously believe that all of McCain’s ads are distortions, while Obama’s are the gospel truth, you deserve exactly what you get in this next election.
For instance, Obama’s latest manure-shoveling exercise is to slam McCain for wanting to privatize Social Security.
Whew, I have to hand it to the Democrats. They’ve actually created a system that allows them to confiscate ever-increasing amounts of cash from the average hard-working American’s paycheck … yet not pay a dime of those contributions back to the families of people who die before they can collect … and meanwhile, they convince people that it’d be a really, really scary thing if we were actually able to keep control of our own money.
If you buy that story, just say, “Baa” (and go run with the other sheep).
Factcheck.org is reporting that John McCain’s claims that he has never been in the US Senate are inaccurate. Factcheck looked into this claim, professed by McCain on the campaign trail yesterday, in which he said he really is a Wahington outsider because he has never stepped foot in the capital is incorrect. Factcheck is also looking into the recent McCain claim that he actually has no home, because it was wiped out by hurricane Ike. Get the facts. McCain is a maverick who will take on the Washinton establishment — once he sorts out who he is.

Oh Please: If you’d like to see why democrats are “claiming” that McCain wanted to privitize social security, here is a link to, ahh, McCain wanting to privitize social security. I’m not sure, but hearing McCain say so, may be reason why democrats are claiming that, well, he said so.

How could I forget the best Obama lie: Saying McCain is out of touch because he doesn’t use email when his wife has to do it for him due to his war energies. Ignoring that McCain was on Telecom committies and is completely in touch. But, I guess overt attacks on the elderly are funny if it serves your cause.
Just hope this doesn’t bite you in the backside when you finally realize that it’s the older people, not the SNL junkies who vote in droves. The youth vote NEVER materializes.
Another lie: That Obama had any plan re Freddie and Fannie whereas McCain had none. Obama had none (because he was in their pocket as the second leading recipient of donations) and McCain had a great bill in 2005 that the democrats killed in committee.
The list goes on…
Again, I’ll laugh when SNL pokes at Obama because he is ripe for parody but no one dares or wants to go there (except the McCain campaign which finally did run The One commercials).
Posted by: Jim | September 21, 2008, 12:37 pm 12:37 pm
Scroll down and hear John McCain talk out privatization, when he now claims that he never was in favor of it. I’m not trying to persuade you to vote one way or the other. Yes, both camps have distorted facts…but I do believe that you put a lot of faith in what McCain has put out there and none in the facts presented by Obama. Vote as you like, but at least, check the facts and know where the candidates really stand. As I read your post, I saw many inaccuracies. Take the time and check. That’s all I’m suggesting. If you’re on here, it means this election means a lot to you. It means a lot to me. I am not a senior, but my parents are…I owe it to them, myself and America to make the most informed decision.
Hope you check. Good luck.

But all the scrip was about McCain own doing.
Jake , jake –Get you facts straight!
Don’t vote for McSame!!
Actually, I thought the Mad TV spoof video with Hillary and Barack (set to the tune of “Umbrella” by Rihanna) was much funnier. Still, it’s funny to watch a video of the guy I’m voting for. Go McCain!
Trickle-down economics have been consistently proven to be ineffective. Give a company more money to play with and it inevitably goes into the hands of executives, not the middle and low-income workers who the Republicans pretend to champion when it comes to the economy. A socialist economic model may turn people’s stomachs, yet here the government is, bailing out and assuming extraordinary powers in its control of financial institutions (as McCain flip-flops practically every day on whether or not he supports these measures after the fact).
These companies and Republicans (especially McCain!) have lobbied for deregulation for years, and now that the SEC has been essentially castrated and companies have bet the house (literally) and lost, taxpayers are bearing the burden of bailing them out, and yet still there are people saying McCain is the one to support on the issue of the economy, and we should give trickle-down economics another try. The man championed the deregulation that got us into this mess (until he now suddenly decided to support it), he has said the “fundamentals of the economy are strong” (until the Wall Street crash made him hurriedly decide that day that this meant the average hardworking American worker – slick) and his plan only compounds the national deficit problem even more than Obama’s, which at least has the virtue of being different. After 8 years of economic mismanagement, we deserve a real change. McCain is so blatantly not equipped to lead this fight.

lighten up, it is just a joke. We are trying to inject humor in the campaign.
Almost nothing about SNL is funny anymore and that goes double, maybe triple, for Al Franken. Their best bits are the opening skit and Weekend Update.
That being said, the whole point of the skit in question is that politicians will take any comment, no matter how innocuous, and twist it to fit their ends.
The skit in question would not have worked had it used the Obama campaign because they haven’t been so guilty of it — yet — while McCain’s campaign staff, with the help of Karl Rove & friends, are masters at this sleazy tactic.

i have a totally non-partisan off topic question.
if we raise the tax on the rich ( a la joe biden) won’t we drive them to create less jobs? to spend less money? won’t they lay-off workers to compensate for higher taxes and raise the price on goods? won’t they move businesses and money overseas?
on the other hand (a la republicans) if the poor don’t have money then they don’t and cannot spend to support economic growth.
i have yet to decide who i will vote for (waiting for the debates) but ultimately i want to make an informed decision. not one that is based on party loyalty.
any takers?
colorado,
I will attempt to give my view.
For one thing you got to input into your equation the human vise of “GREED”, THE 6% of the population that has most of the wealth pay no taxes.
For instance here in Atlanta they have what is called a Mass transit “marta”. It is owned by Wachovia Bank, it owns the tracks and all cars and buses) it gets a 1.3 billion dollar tax right off for depreciation.
Point is that the Greed of the Rich never reaches the poor, job included.
[Next topic to come]
The issue here isn’t one of something being comedy or satire or humor or an art form. It’s a matter of bias and distortion in the influential media, which is Democratic-dominated and has created and sustained the myth of McCain’s dishonesty versus Obama’s truthfulness. The Obama campaign and the media are getting away with it because the media themselves are the spin doctors in this case.
Now, for example, it is an officially established fact that Karl Rove agrees with the Democrats that McCain is dishonest and Obama isn’t. Why? Because the Democrats took a Rove comment out of context for an ad (about **McCain’s** dishonesty!!) and immediately pushed the quote on reporters (“In case anyone was still wondering whether John McCain is running the sleaziest, most dishonest campaign in history, today Karl Rove — the man who held the previous record — said McCain’s ads have gone too far,” — campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement to the media) and the media not only didn’t “fact check” it, but helped it along into an urban legend. For example, CNN ran this headline: “Rove: McCain went ‘too far’ in ads.” And their article, just like the Obama ad, takes the quote out of context and mischaracterizes the whole interview, emphasizing only McCain. Now the media can refer to this legend as fact. Here’s Time’s Joel Klein: “Politics has always been lousy with blather and chicanery. But there are rules and traditions too. In the early weeks of the general-election campaign, a consensus has grown in the political community — a consensus that ranges from practitioners like Karl Rove to commentators like, well, me — that John McCain has allowed his campaign to slip the normal bounds of political propriety.”
This is **hardly** the only distortion helped along by the media – there are many. And it is simply inexcusable on their part, since an opinion quote is about the easiest thing in the world to check. Just look at the transcript of what was said. This is a part of it: “WALLACE: All right, and for fair game, what is McCain doing that goes a step too far? ROVE: Well, McCain has gone in some of his ads — similarly gone one step too far, and sort of attributing to Obama things that are, you know, beyond the 100 percent truth test.” Rove says McCain has **similarly** gone too far. Just from that, it should be clear that Rove’s remarks have been allowed to be distorted. This isn’t even a case of Rove slipping up and accidentally revealing his real opinion of McCain, and later wanting to revise what he said. Rove indicated afterward that the Democrats just mischaracterized what he said (“Of course, they fail to say anything about the fact I said they were even more misleading.”), and they did distort what he said, and the media have given them free reign to continue to do so.
Al doing jokes again. When he gave his acceptance speech for the Democrat senate nomination he said he was no longer the joker. Watching someone commit political suicide is not funny, Al.

Well Not every network in the world
can be the OBAMA network
McBush advertisements are so Lame
You think Obama produced them…
you have a Obama Girl
So where is the Mcbush girl? lol
The skit was appropriate. In fact, the McCain ads in the skit were not far from the McCain ads in reality.
Furthermore, I’d say the American people have earned the right to some comedic relief, after the Republican administration just introduced a proposal for the largest ever transfer of wealth from the middle class (average American taxpayers) to the rich (reckless finance organizations who would like the taxpayer to cover their loses).

Someone compared corporaate bailouts to welfare receipiants? That is an odd comparison.
Bailing out a corporation that provides jobs, provides services and also pays taxes, to people who do no work, pay no taxes and contribute nothing?
Yes, sounds like a good comparision!
Imagine if Barack or Michelle Obama’s e-mail had been hacked. Would the reaction from the folks at the Los Angeles Times be so muted? If an Obama were the victim, it’s easy to picture Times editor Tim Rutten penning a hissy-fit op-ed, angrily demanding a federal investigation, and trying to formulate how the McCain campaign was directly involved.
The Times relegated the story of Palin’s e-mail account being hacked to the “National Briefing” section, buried in the middle of page A16, with a puny 85 words, in Thursday’s paper (9/18/08). (See the image of the story.)
The New York Times? The story didn’t even make it to the actual paper; it only went as far as their blog.
Underdog thank you for your view. i have heard mccain talk about ‘greed’ as well.
i really would like for us the people to sift thru the issues in public forums so that we can make an informed decision on election day.

You are right, there is no comparison, because when you get a 55 million dollar bonus as did the CEO of Lehman did last year.
You surely can’t compare that to living on the street.
Were do liberals get their statistics? “Virtually all Republicans beleive Obama is a Muslim”?
Please cite your source for that statement! I would like to see the poll your quoting on that!
heather-from a non-partisan position perhaps the reference to corporate bail outs (being like welfare) has to do with the fact that the fat cat ceo’s of these corporations are making out will millions of our tax money.
SNL has always gone after anyone who is in the public life…..Dan Quayle, Bob Dole, Bill Clinton, Dan Snyder just to name a few….why is this such a big deal now? It’s comedy people…..last thing you want to do is let them know where you tied your goat.
Why do Conservatives always act like it’s the fault of Liberals that Conservatives aren’t funny? If you had senses of humor, you could have your own comedy show. But every time you Conservatives try, it flops. The fact of the matter is that there hasn’t been a funny Conservative in America since the early 1960s. Literally not one. Conservatives, stop blaming others because you’re so humorless.

i owned a small restaurant in santa fe. i poured my heart and soul into the business. i worked and my kids worked to avoid payroll. after a few years i just could not afford to pay my way and decided to sell for what i had invested in equipment.
i had no business plan, no accountant, and not enough capital-it was my fault. it would never occur to me (nor would i have the option) to ask the government to bail me out and pay me a bonus for trying and failing.
so what entitles any business/corporation large or small to expect the taxpayer to rescue them for being stupid?
ALL,,
DID YOU HEAR IN A WHISPER:
That it maybe a plot by the Republicans to pass this ‘BAIL OUT’ to strap the hands of Obama, if he wins the election, he will have no power to control to sponsor any of his plans, it will all lie in the hands of Paulson, as the bill reads that no bills or laws will change or review the control of the Sec. of Treasure.

There is much more to this if foreing companies are included? Sorry McCain, something fundamentally wrong that has been wrong for a while if foreing companies are going to get bailout help from my pocket.
We outsource jobs and now in a direct and real sense our income.

Have you noticed a sense of urgency among Obama surrogates, and the pro-Obama media–like NBC,CNN, Newsweek, New York Times.
They are panicking because the number of voters that think BO is a Muslim has increased.
There are more articles/comments blaming racism for his inabililty to close the deal.
For some reason they just don’t want to blame anything on BO’s radical past, and thin record in the Senate.
Or accept the fact that Americans simply trust McCain more.
McCain/Palin Champaign ads goes something like this:
Obama teaches children how to have sex.
Obama votes Present 130/8000 votes.
Obama is McCain
Up is Down
The world is flat
McCain invented the Blackberry
Obama didn’t pass the toughest Ethics reform since Watergate.

What happen to you paid McCain staffers? Last week Obama was sure to lose. Polls don’t matter anyway. Obama has been consistent when he is up and when he is down, unfortunately you can’t say the same about McCain 08′, maybe McCain 00′. McCain and the republicans forgot the 1st thing you learn in Econ 101. That all people will act in self-interest. So deregulating the market is like legalizing stealing. I just found out that the bailout protection is extended to foreign firms!
This makes me unhappy.
Based on what is reported, they know that the US Government failed its regulatory duty and foreign firms assumed that the collateral for loans was solid because of US regulatory oversight. This is the only real reason the US should be supporting foreign firms.
Again, I get to support stupidity of the upper 2%. Yes, while some middle-income folks have investment and pension exposure, we all know we are supporting stupid bond traders, stock managers, portfolio managers who supposedly “deserve” their high incomes the right to pursue free market economics.

Colorado. Not sure if you’ve been paying attention to the economy in the US but this “create less jobs? to spend less money? won’t they lay-off workers to compensate for higher taxes and raise the price on goods? won’t they move businesses and money overseas?” is what has been happening in the “trickle down” free market economy of Bush for 8 years. Company’s take their tax breaks while employing people overseas. Works great for the CEO’s–not so good for the rest of us. Maybe it’s time to try a different approach.

I guess you have a problem actually with actually looking at the situation for what it is, a fabricated controversy. You can’t look at a snapshot culture and decide rather or not a person is radical. Alot of black ministers and reverends are angry and they blame government for alot of things. Rev. Wright is no different. When you grow up with institutionalize racism, (Jim Crow), you do have a bias against government in general. But I guess you didn’t know that.

She hired a lobbyist as mayor to go after earmarks,
She has a transparent government in place- that’s why everyone on the council- including majority Republicans voted for the investigation. The investigation she & hubby refuses to cooperate with!Palin is vindictive.
These lies are repeated many times- and shows a lack of integrity for McCain and Palin
Palin not only put her 17 year old unmarried pregnant daughter on stage- but put Levi, the baby’s 18 year old- gum chewing- father on stage with her. This was to show they are just a normal more American family- than most?? I didn’t see it that way.

Simple give the money to the middle class. Our economy is supported by a high level of spending an a low level of saving. Because of this spending a dollar given by the government gets used 10 times before ending up back in the government. The rich don’t spend the same amount of there income has middle class does. There for the return is less and the economy improves less. McCain will cut taxes across the board but he gives the majority to people with income above a quarter million. Obama’s is vice versa and will be more effective.

Wow! So many opinions from so many who have absolutely no idea how convoluted and complicated our economy is. Comparing AIG to your store in AZ…….really? Have you no knowledge whatsoever just how Investment banks and AIG were tied together and without the bailout, our ENTIRE economic structure would have gone over a cliff? Have you no understanding that we would have become a third world country? I suppose McCain supporters truly are as simple minded, uneducated and unable to discern facts from more than one source of news. God forbid we should go one whole day without a republican whining about the media (all four major networks run by Republicans by the way) It is astonishing to me just how much most McCain lemmings do NOT know about their own candidate or about Obama. Their affinity for twisted lies and unfounded rumors is jaw dropping.
There truly are two Americas. One in which the man with 13 cars and 8 homes in three time zones who is best friends and who voted for zero government oversight has convinced a boat load of people who do not know how to think for themselves or cross reference research that he would be their leader; and the America where the black man who worked himself out of poverty, who has no lobbyist running his campaign and who did not profit from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, trusts that his party contains members who research what they hear on the news, read more than one newpaper and take time to check all asserted ‘facts’ ………..oh, and know that a man who has been a Christian all of his life needn’t invite a neophyte to be his token…or his third wife.
Perhaps the America that does not understand the Wall St. bail out this week should spend some time learning more about our economy and less time pretending they know their subject.
I am the last person to ever say that Dubya made the right move and yet on this, he did. I am also not employed in the financial sector but I do understand that my country came woefully close to financial collapse this week. Thought it was pretty funny and I have just a slight feeling that both campaigns are being run in this manner. Throw a bucket of smelly stuff on the wall and see what sticks. The sad part about both is that they are promising things that will be difficult to accomplish. It would be nice if anyone had the courage to say “look, we don’t have the money to do all these wonderful things that have been promised, let alone ones that we are promising.”
It is real sad when we as citizens want to vote for the guy who will promise to give us or our interest the most money and it is particularly sad when such bright, well educated men and women sometimes well meaning – other times not
have inadvertently made a mess of our economy.

I don’t know much about politics or Wall Street, but that John McCain was great on Saturday Night Live. He’s a natural.
From NoQuarter:
“Let’s start with the numbers. Why is a first term Senator pulling down almost $300,000 a year from Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG, Countrywide Financial, and Washington Mutual? He has not even completed his fourth year in the Senate and received a total of $1,093,329.00 from these eight companies and their employees. (all data from OpenSecrets.org). John McCain’s numbers, according to OpenSecrets.org for the period 1990-2008 (i.e., 18 years worth of data) only collected $549,584.00. In other words, Barack is receiving $273,582.25 (and 2008 is not over) per year while McCain raised a paltry $30,532.44.
Want another shocker? Barack Obama has received more from one source–Goldman Sachs $542,252.00–than McCain has from all of the companies combined. Who the hell is more beholden to lobbyists? And why does a junior Senator from Illinois rate this kind of dough?”

My Name is Omentum and I approve that message. Where was the humor?????? It’s the clear-eyed stark truth.
He is just and ole geeza being told what to do because he doesnt have the bearings to orchestrate such a rove’esque campaign by himself.
hopefully his handlers reeled him by now because he went waaaaay off message last week.
SNL segment was nothing new. We are watching this show any time John McCain appears on TV and struggles two put two sentences together always against OBAMA.
I don’t have any problem in characterizing McCain .He is a Republican! According to his own campaign, Republicans are corrupt and incompetent. Obviously he has inside information.
I think the skit is appropriate in that it represents what a lot of people who supported him in 2000 are feeling right now – that he will do anything to win, including using the Rove tactics used against him by Bush.
It’s also payback for that ad portraying Obama as some kind of sexual pervert for voting in favor of a bill to help kindergartners protect themselves from sexual predators.
Lorne Michaels caters to the young and ignorant audience and I expect this satire…however the funniest skit so far was Obama in the White House as “Presiden Obama” calling Hillary in a panic at 3AM because he couldn’t handle it and was smoking again….he couldn’t even find the heater. He will be THE MOST ADVISOR DRIVEN PRESIDENT OF ALL TIME….SOCK PUPPET.
I guess this is why Lorne Michaels (Exec. Producer SNL) is supporting/contributing to JOHN SYDNEY McCAIN not Barack Hussein Obama.

Sen. McCain Let’s talk about the stupid war on Iraq Thousands of brave Americans dead and injured. Let’s talk about the deregulation of the market and for consequence the collapsed economy. Lets talk of the billions dollars gifted to the oil companies resulting on today price of petrol. * My friends that was Obama fault*.
Senator McCain you are missing the point .What makes a President is the right Judgment. Be cool like coo camber in time of crisis. Not have 7 houses or family business hundred million dollars worth. Do not have the temper to pick a fight but the temper to fight every day make the life of the community around you better.
Make your luck alone against the tide and not be a pilot with the wings of your father.
Sen. you said the fundamentals of the economy are strong. What do you mean?
I don’t know that’s Obama fault to!
cincyr….yeah McCain ran in 2000 and played fair, like he is now…until Bush spread a rumor about him having a black child (he happens to have an adopted daughter from Bangladesh). McCain and Bush don’t like each other which is why you can’t tie these two toether personally.
However, we sure can tie Obama to Rezko, Ayers and “uncle” Wright. The ads will start coming about mid October and WRIGHTFULLY SO. I heard there is a good one with Obama on tape talking up his banished mentor.
Obama NOT READY…NO JUDGEMENT. During these complicated global times I, AND MILLIONS, WILL NOT VOTE THE JR. SENATOR, MOST LIBERAL CANDIDATE OF ALL TIME, into the White House.
There will be VOTER FRAUD with Obama too….they’ll be counting votes days after 11/4….make Bush/Gore look like a tea party.
Posted by: DEB | September 21, 2008, 5:26 pm 5:26 pm
Of course it is fair, you know why. Because John McCain is a big liar. Obama is raise taxes (truth: tax cut for 95%), Obama is the reason for the economy sinking, Obama said Palin is a pig (Truth: he did not say it, but she is one)
Since we can’t get the real video of McSame’s thought process in approving the actual lies and slander he put on the airwaves already, let alone what he planning over the next forty-three days, I have to think that the SNL skits certainly came close to nailing it!
Anyone like DEB, who thinks McSAME is running an honorable campaign is simply blind to reality. Thankfully, most Americans aren’t buying his crap, or that of his soulmate, screaming sarah the impaler!
This election is too important to ignore McSame’s lies, or his inability to think coherently or stick with an off-the-cuff position without being reined in by his handlers.
No Way, NO HOW, NO McSAME/PALIN!!!
Obama/Biden 08
It is really sad once analyze why McCain select Palin for running mate.
The only criterion was how he could win this election despite the best interest of the country and the American people!**Remember Governor Romney spent the last year campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination and talking to the American people about the importance of strengthening our economY**
And we are listening Sarah Palint overconfident untrained rigid and answering with out vacillation
Yes I am ready to be President like that job is similar to a manager position on the local Wall Mart shop .
The same person last month was saying if some can explain to me what the Vice President do? Her story is SPIN, LIES and LIPSTICK
The Republican ticket!
John McCain (We bomb everything FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! )
Sarah Palin (I see Russia from my house)
His aged and ambitious
She is young and motivated.
For him is the last chance to be President
For her the last chance to be his cheerleader.
John McCain and Sarah Plain promise of change: Is a change to nowhere.
Nowhere near to help the American people with a real economic change Nowhere near to build America’s independence from oil. Nowhere near to help the 95% of the American families.
Nowhere near to help the entrepreneurs and working families to keep jobs in America.
Nowhere near to provide the medical care reform for the American people and the Veterans who they are not fought for the red and blue states of the electoral map they fought against the terror and to keep America on the map. There is not much left of this campaign and the media have turned a blind eye on the false accusations of McCain. They are keen on to create more crap stories and they don’t challenge the candidates on the issues. We watch the ladies from the ‘View’ trying to do the job of the expect savvy political commentators. Americans have the chance to repair the damages of the Bush Administration.
If the Americans are not ready to see this campaign on the colors of the electoral map RED and BLUE. But only focus on the color of the candidates BLACK and WHITE then they deserve another four years of economic chaos, job losses, foreclosures and open new hostile fronts around the world.
Go with Lorne Michaels (SNL Exec. Producer) on this one and put your support behind JOHN SYDNEY McCAIN!!!!!
The only choice if you want leadership and COUNTRY FIRST, not like egomaniac Barack Hussein Obama, most liberal Senator ever, candidate of the young, hence SNL skits geared for them….make the grown up choice…McCAIN/PALIN!

What a Ostrich and the Republicans have in common? Let me guess!
Both hide their head on the sand and pretend everything is fine
An ostrich bury its head in the sand and pretend everything is fine
Republicans do the same and follow McCain !
America and the world is suffering with the blunders of Bush Administration
The economy have crumple and the prosperity of many people are under risk not only in America but also worldwide.
John McCain and Sarah Palin promise of change: Is a change to Nowhere
This election is not only about some bridge in Alaska it is about all the bridges and roads in all the o United States because they are all crying out for repairs and maintenance. This is because for the last 8 years the Bush and the Republicans have spent enormous amounts to build up Iraq and they have forgotten about the needs of their own country.
I thought the skit was hilarious and not out of line. To be in politics, one must have very thick skin, and I believe John McCain himself said that advised Obama to have a sense of humor. The skit was tame when considering the Obama, Clinton and Palin skits.
The country is on the brink of economic disaster and we have two Bozos (Obama amd Biden)having a great time rollicking around the country. One is hobnobbing with Hollywood stars..the other is pretending he’s a modern day Johnny Ringo with a fast Beretta. And, it’s all Backwards. The Jr. Senator who has not even completed one full Senate term is at the head of the ticket for President, and the 36 year old veteran Senator is at the rear of the ticket. As Don King would say-Only In America!!

Why on earth would anyone pose a question whether an action by the Obama campaign is appropriate?
When there current marching orders from the Leader is to “get in the faces of independents and Republicans”, when a CANDIDATE is threatening to sic the IRS on people who disagree with him, when Saul Alinksy’s tactics are the bible of the campaign……….”appropriateness” is not a concept that means much.
Remember, Obama has never won a campaign in which he did not get the oppostion disqualified. And he doesn’t care how.
Of course it’s appropriate, if by “appropriate” you mean in the spirit of McCain’s actual lies, distortions, and smears-by-association; cf. yesterday’s video, with McCain’s death’s-head grin at each applause line/lie. It’s utterly fair satire.
Funny? Nothing about this election is funny. Sic transit gloria mundi.
McCain’s Schmidt called the mainstream media Piranhas and he also called Democrats Wolves. So yes SNL is tame compared to reality. We can all laugh at SNL and get real scared at reality.
I think SNL has been trying to make up for the Tina Fey exposure of the media bias on the first show back from the writer’s strike. SNL got flack from that. Shame because if that skit had been done a month earlier HRC would have been the nominee. On 60 minutes tonight McCain came across as a “safer” bet than Obama because he has experience and is not afraid to take stands on tough issues. He has the courage of his convictions. Obama came across as saying what he thinks people want to hear. He promises everything to everybody-and that is impossible to deliver. He has totally turned into exactly what he was running against. It’s easy to for Obama to blame others because they can’t blame him as he’s never done anything.

To paraphrase a line from Barack Obama to Hillary Clinton, “Oh, SNL, you’re funny enough.” It was not their best political skit of late; it was not their worst. And I’ll feel better about the “even-handedness” of the whole enterprise when I see them run a skit next week satirizing the Obama decision to lie to senior citizens in Florida and tell them, both in ads and in speeches, that John McCain would cut their social security benefits. Even Newsweek, way deep in the Obama tank, carried the factcheck.org smack down of that slander.
Where was the parody pointing to Obama’s 77% negative ads, compared to McCain’s 56%? If the jack—– watching SNL believe the hype, you will, again, be in a conundrum when Obama loses. The majority of America does not share your spin. SNL is a shill for the far left of the Democratic party; Hillary was portrayed the same way. A Republican, I switched parties, and voted for her in PA, because of the bias. I think, and know, that I am not alone. Obama supporters hatred and vitriol, continue to fuel the dissent. I will vote for McCain/Palin, as a democrat. Cannot come soon enough!
My God-does anyone on McCain’s side know how to tell the truth? He is for privatization of social security-pure and simple. He can’t go all the way because he will lose the election if his true Republican feelings become known. So he positions himself as wanting just to have a voluntary contribution of a percentage of one’s social security into the markey. Well you know the old saying about letting the camel stick its nose in the tent. As Gingrich said, he wants social security to slowly whither on the vine. Start with a little voluntary contribution and in 10 years social security will be entirely privatized. Give me a break.
Saturday night live is an extension of the Obama campaign. It’s on NBC, his press secretary network.
After all, Obama has no sense of humor whatsoever, so SNL is his Humor Politburo.
Has anybody seen Obama chucle, or tell a joke?
And while we are on the topic of human qualities, why was there not a single person from Obama’s past life at his convention? Does he not have a single presentable acquaintance who is not one of his political svengali’s or otherwise vested in his candidacy?
Maybe Al is angling for a gig for after Minnesota re-elects Coleman.

Kind of the way BO, Rev Wright, and William Ayers chose to indocrinate young kids in Chicago.

Excellent, excellent, excellent stuff. I’ve just seen the data that virtually all Republicans believe that Obama is a muslim. That is a lie of course — and provides serious proof that the base value of the Republican party is dishonesty, which is the point of the skit.
Excellent job.

Posted by: Mitch | September 21, 2008, 12:12 pm 12:12 pm

Good luck.

What disturbs me about this thread is the total lack of understanding of satire as an art form.
The “literal interpretations” and “rebuttals” and “explanations in partisan terms” indicate that the general intelligence level of this country has sunk to a new low.

i have a totally non-partisan off topic question.
if we raise the tax on the rich ( a la joe biden) won’t we drive them to create less jobs? to spend less money? won’t they lay-off workers to compensate for higher taxes and raise the price on goods? won’t they move businesses and money overseas?
on the other hand (a la republicans) if the poor don’t have money then they don’t and cannot spend to support economic growth.
i have yet to decide who i will vote for (waiting for the debates) but ultimately i want to make an informed decision. not one that is based on party loyalty.
any takers?

colorado,
I will attempt to give my view.

But every time you Conservatives try, it flops. The fact of the matter is that there hasn’t been a funny Conservative in America since the early 1960s. Literally not one.

Alot of black ministers and reverends are angry and they blame government for alot of things. Rev. Wright is no different.
McCain brags about being the insider who can get things done- what is he today?
Couldn’t list all the lies- it would take too much time. A truly sleazy pair.

McCain appeals to the lowest common denominator in People. Make people afraid and scared of the other candidate instead of keeping a promise to be clean.

Obama supporters are foolish to think that he will never betray them.
Obama was a close friend of Pastor Wright for TWENTY YEARS.
Obama threw Wright under the bus for personal ambition.
McCain would not betray his country even after 5 years of torture.

1 Rev Wright – Son of a Baptist Minister,United States Marine, cardiopulmonary technician, Served on medical team treating President Lyndon B. Johnson, Masters in English, Doctoral in Ministry.
2. Rezco – Offered Obama job(he turn down). Obama bought a house from him above Market Price
3. Ayers – Lived in the same neigborhood, Work with him on EDUCATION REFORM.

Yes I know all about it because I been paying attention. Rezco was convicted of fraud but nothing led back to Obama. Ayers was a radical but I guess Christians stop believing in forgiveness since McCain started running. And I guess Rev. Wright was way to honnest about what he feels. I believe I am voting for the right person. But run along and vote for more deregulation of the banks, and federal lobbyist run White House.

No, we were not jumping out windows…..it is 2008 and the economy is global, not 1929 you simpletons!

Reality check the Bush and Republican administration cause the mess. Then put a trillion dollars to bail them out. Bush won’t lift a finger to help with foreclosures, but allow CRIMINAL wall street practices. By the way add a trillion dollars to the national debt on top of the over Trillion dollars caused by the Iraq debt.

Not going to work, however, when Obama has lied about so much you can google a list that takes hours to go through. Deal breaker lies for me were 3 of BO’s bedfellows….Wright, Ayers and Rezko…Obama can act ignorant all he wants about a racist, a terriorist, and a criminal….BUT AMERICA KNOWS THE TRUTH.
I’m wating for the Hillary to replace Biden shock that is expected to happen in early October, due to Biden’s “health” problems. Obama needs her and her 18 million votes, but it still won’t work.

Posted by: foreclosure | September 21, 2008, 5:00 pm 5:00 pm
I think the skit is appropriate in that it represents what a lot of people who supported him in 2000 are feeling right now – that he will do anything to win, including using the Rove tactics used against him by Bush.
It’s also payback for that ad portraying Obama as some kind of sexual pervert for voting in favor of a bill to help kindergartners protect themselves from sexual predators.

However, we sure can tie Obama to Rezko, Ayers and “uncle” Wright. The ads will start coming about mid October and WRIGHTFULLY SO. I heard there is a good one with Obama on tape talking up his banished mentor.

And we are listening Sarah Palint overconfident untrained rigid and answering with out vacillation
