Democratic VP Candidate Joe Biden Recalls 9/11 Attacks on Anniversary

ABC News’ Matt Jaffe reports: On the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Joe Biden put aside the partisan politics of the campaign trail to meet with a group of first responders and remember the tragic events of that day.

"Let’s pull together, let’s stay together," Biden said at American Legion Post 703 in Parma, Ohio.

In Parma, just outside of Cleveland, Biden recalled how he learned of the attacks on the World Trade Center when his wife Jill called him as he rode the Amtrak train down to work on Capitol Hill.

“At that moment the whole world sort of froze," Biden said.

Biden, noting that he was the first senator or congressman to go to Afghanistan after 9/11, remembered his trip to Bagram Air Base, where the one single picture displayed in a hangar-turned-prison left a lasting impression on him.

“Remember immediately after 9/11 the picture you saw of that grizzled fireman, bent over, coming out of that dust and human debris with that look of determination on his face – well, our military guys did not have a picture of a political leader, did not have a picture of another military man or woman – they had a picture of a firefighter, a firefighter, and everywhere I went in Europe that picture was displayed because it was a symbol of America’s determination, of America getting up off its knees, of America dusting itself off and saying ‘okay, okay, we’re going to make this right.’"

"You firefighters — literally not figuratively – lifted America’s spirits and showed us determination. And everybody learned that, while other people were scrambling out of the building, your brothers and sisters were scrambling running upstairs to the 3rd, 5th, 20th, 50th, 70th floor to try to get people out."

“This is not about politics today,” Biden said, seated on a stage alongside five first responders. “This is about remembering our fallen heroes and remembering that there are a whole lot of people like the people I’m sitting with here today and many of you who will and are ready to God forbid respond to anything that would happen.”

Later Thursday, the Delaware lawmaker will attend a New York City service forum featuring presidential rivals Barack Obama and John McCain.

Biden highlighted his work as a lawmaker with first responders, noting that they saved the lives of his two sons in the 1972 car accident that killed his first wife and daughter.

"Part of today is reminding Americans that every single day there are acts that are both ordinary and profound," Biden said in recalling the attacks. "You suit up, head out on that vehicle not knowing what you’re going to find. If, God forbid, anything remotely close to that happens, it’s going to be you guys trying to save all of us."

He urged Americans to never forget the sacrifices made that day.

“The nation that doesn’t remember those who have fallen, doesn’t commemorate what sacrifices they’ve made, is a nation that really doesn’t know its history," he said.

“I really don’t want us to forget the people who gave, gave the last measure of themselves, to save other people. I want people to remember," Biden said.

9/11 should be one of the central themes in this election.
Not only because of the continuing global war on terrorism.
But even more so because of the Republican Administration’s betrayal of the folks who did the dirty work in the days, weeks and months after the terrorist attacks on the WTC.
Some 40,000 men and women have worked at the Ground Zero site. First, looking for survivors and collecting body parts. And then, for many months, clearing up the the immense amount of debris and dust.
70% of them suffer from illnesses related to Ground Zero. Many have developed aggressive forms of cancer and died an premature death in the past years, their lungs and other vital parts destroyed by the heavily polluted dust and particles at Ground Zero.
At the time of their heroic work at Ground Zero they were told – on behalf of our Republican Administration – that the dusty air was SAFE to breathe. Now thousands of the folks who are heralded as heroes by George W. Bush and John McCain have been thrown out of their health insurancies, while our Government has closed its doors for all those begging for help and assistance.
These heroes are dying, and nobody is caring about them anymore. The Government’s hope is, that America will simply forget about them.
The betrayal of the Ground Zero community is one of the greatest scandals in recent American history, and nobody seems to care.
Please, if your care about these people and value the courageous and dirty work they did for America, often as volunteers, get informed on how our Government betrayed these people. Find out yourself what happened to them, what their current desperate situation is, and what a new administration could and should do to help them, starting with fixing their health insurances.
Don’t forget our greatest heroes on this tragic day.
And be sure to think about them, before you consider to put these very same “patriotic” Republicans in power again.

I love Joe Biden…and no matter who you are voting for it has to give lots of people a good feeling that this guy has a chance to be there when they are steering the ship.

Joe Biden is a class act. I feel privileged to have volunteered for him in Iowa and will always feel a connection with he and Jill and the Biden family. They are good people.
Godspeed, Joe.

Biden is LYING. On the morning of 911 while the attacks were underway he was meeting with Pakistani General Mahmoud Ahmed (On behalf of Saheed Sheikh) and wiring 100,00 to Mohammed Atta. WHY WASN’T THIS BROUGHT UP IN THE 911 REPORT! And why hasn’t Joe explained why he was meeting with a finacier of the attack, while the attack was occuring! Doesn’t this concern ANYBODY!!!! Look into this for yourself. And when you find the truth do NOT let Biden anywhere near the White House until he answers this question. The victims families have a right to know what Joe knows… Don’t you think? How DARE he go anywhere NEAR the sites of the fallen on 911. He’s got alot to answer for. Don’t reward him until he does!!!

Unfortunately there are a number of low-class people, some of whom post here, who like to use the same old Rovian Fear and Smear tactics, which just goes to prove that you really can fool a majority of The People ALL of the time! That’s how “W” got re-elected.

Biden is a knowledgeable and powerful man of very profound humility. I confess I believe the country would be better served if he were on top of the ticket, but I am very pleased that Obama recognized his capabilities. I will be happy as long as he has the opportunity to continue to serve.

Obama cared enough about Americans to choose an intelligent, experienced and profoundly knowledgeable running mate.
On the other hand, McCain chose a woman who couldn’t even win Miss Alaska. But in the end, he’s the one who should be very afraid…because now she wants to be president and she will gun him down, skin him alive and mount his head on the wall of the oval office.

Joe Biden should remember a little more about domestic violence and amend his Violoence Agaisnt Women Act before he gets elected. This law provides no help for abused men and men are abused equally. Check my facts: http://www.mediaradar.org

mj, Obammy picked someone who had what he didn’t, experience from the Civil War. He picked Hairplug Joe because Hitlery would have undermined everything he did.
He would have gone to Kosovo and Hitlery would have HIT HIM WITH SNIPER FIRE.
Obammy is toast. Both sides, no need to turn him over.

Joe is a solid guy, and exactly the kind of person we want running the country. God save us from Palin and republican arrogance.

Ben, you know Joe personally?
All I know is he has voted the 3rd most liberal senator. That means he has voted against the last two SC justices. He has voted for every gun control bill. He has voted to raise taxes every time. He voted FOR the Wah and now says he supports Obammy’s view. Kinda flip floppy, ain’t he.
Just what is republican arrogance? Is that going after terrorists over there rather than waiting for them to come here and fry you? Is arrogance wanting for reps, senators, and presidents to preserve my Constitutional rights? I just got some back from when Klinton took them away.
Is it “solid” when someone shoots off their mouth without thinking? I can understand someone making a gaffe when they mispeake. Yeah, I know, it’s a big joke when Bush or McCain does it. But when Obammy talks about the “57″ states —– we are to forget it.
