Fact-Checking the Economic Attacks of Obama and McCain

Our "Good Morning America" look at the facts can be watched HERE.

Senator John McCain’s campaign manager Rick Davis was paid more than $30,000 a month for five years as president of an advocacy group set up by the mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to defend them against stricter regulations, current and former officials say.
Read all about it in today’s New York Times.

Good Morning America. ABC. Charles Gibson.
Unbiased? LOL!
Doesn’t matter what they say. It will be filled with lies.

Mr.Tapper,
The McCain campaign was quoting a Washington Post article, where Raines himself said he was advising Obama.
Taking the word of a criminal like Raines, and a denial of McCains opponent, is hardly fact checking, sir.

Catch all his lies.
All we need to do is tell the truth and they will whine about our giving them hell.

Actually JPT it is unclear that the claim about Phil Gramm is false. Tucker Bounds, spokesperson for McCain, dodged the question when directly asked whether Gramm would become Treasury secretary or have any other position in a McCain administration. Bounds only said the Obama campaign had no way of knowing that and kept repeating that Gramm was no longer an official advisor to McCain (although he is still unofficially advising him). I would consider the failure to answer the question a confirmation, particularly considering the history of this campaign.

When is some “clever” reporter going to report on the involvement that McCain had with the Savings & Loan scandal which cost the taxpayers billions to bail out. McCain was held by the Senate Ethics Comm.to have shown “poor judgment” in meeting with the culprits prior to the scandal exploding on the scene. The leading felon was Charles Keating, a good friend of McCain’s, contributed several hundred thousand dollars to his Senatorial campaign. McCain was one of the “Keating 5.” Why is this relevant? Because McCain is a self described “deregulator” and poor gov’t oversight is what caused the S&L scandal and what caused the present fiasco which will cost the taxpayers almost one trillion dollars. Let’s hear from McCain about this.

QUESTION: What exactly is Fannie Mae’s involvement in the current financial crisis?
ANSWER: Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac bought some of the tainted securities.
Various investment banks (some of which no longer exist, not Fannie Mae) took B grade (or worse) mortgages, MIXED with A grade mortgages, and generated asset based securities.
These new securities, based in part on questionable mortgages, were somehow graded AAA by the bond rating companies. Many, many financial companies including Fannie Mae bought these now toxic securities.
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were among the last financial institutions to start acquiring these securities.
This last year commercial banks and investment banks have run away from the market.
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have been the ONLY ones making mortgage loans.

“you can’t view something with which you don’t agree?”
It’s impossible not to hear the drumbeat from the Left. Don’t kid yourself. It permeates the country. One has to seek out alternative views.
It’s the major problem the country has. If you don’t have the time to look, ALL you will EVER hear is left-wing propoganda. It’s the main reason so many people vote for socialism and retreat when the clear lessons of history go the other way.
Does pointing it out disturb you somehow?

Why are there no headlines that are pro-Obama? At least have some negative headlines against McCain or Palin. ABC ,and the other tv/web networks , need to continue to be homers for the DNC. They need to do so in order to offset talk radio being so conservative.

“The McCain campaign was quoting a Washington Post article, where Raines himself said he was advising Obama”
The original WaPo quote was anonymous.
It only came out after the ad that Raines was the source of the quote.
So we have 1 adviser who advising seems to be a couple of calls and 1 adviser who helped in the VP vetting & search.
The architect of the McCain campaign was a lobbyist for Fannie Mae. McCain chief economics policy adviser (and whose plan McCain still uses) is a dereg guru who called the nation a bunch of whiners. McCain himself is a devotee of deregulation.

McCain/Palin erased a 34 point Obama lead on question of which ticket better understands women.
And the fact that McCain pays female staffers more than Obama–even though on the stump BO preaches equal pay for women.

Mission Accomplished !
Not only did the Bush administration do nothing to protect consumers, it embarked on an aggressive and unprecedented campaign to prevent states from protecting their residents from the very problems to which the federal government was turning a blind eye.
In 2003, during the height of the predatory lending crisis, the OCC invoked a clause from the 1863 National Bank Act to issue formal opinions preempting all state predatory lending laws, thereby rendering them inoperative.
The OCC also promulgated new rules that prevented states from enforcing any of their own consumer protection laws against national banks. The federal government’s actions were so egregious and so unprecedented that all 50 state attorneys general, and all 50 state banking superintendents, actively fought the new rules.

Hey Aussie
Our Media is too biased to be fair these days, so indeed they can no longer be trusted to be an example for the rest of the world. They have political agendas, and no longer represent all of AMerica. They only represent the opinions, views, ideologies of their CEOs, the reporters themselves. Its a sad day for AMericans to be bombarded with this type of biased coverage. Even old schoolers like Gibson, Walters, have sunk to new lows to promote their agenda. The American Media is a joke now. Until the FCC clamps down and starts to pull the free licenses, it wont get any better. I see your views have already been retarded by our media. Its not to late. Turn off your tv.

Why no mention of McCains collbaration with the vietnamise that got Australian and Americans killed ?
Why no mention of McCains history of turning hiss back on MIA’s and why did he push for normal relations with them when they hadnt provided a full account of the mia’s fate.
Why no mention of the keating five ?
Why no mention of CINDY AND John setting up her aide to take the fall and go to prison when Cindy stole drugs from a childrens charity to feed her adiction ? I mean they set the guy up and he served time! They lied about him he went to prison! She later when caught checked her self in rehab (She did no time) ?

I do watch a little CNN wich I find it honest but a little bland.
I watch a little fox which we over here think is a joke “fair and balanced” now that comedy. Its propaganda I think russian news is proberly more fair and ballanced lol.
I watch ABC but am a little sceptical as Disney donated thousands of dollars to Hillary and to McCain… McCain being there last horse in the race makes me question them ? Tapper does ok and I like seeing what you guys are thinking!

The head of Fannie’s lobbying group was listed as an adviser on one press release (Aquiles Suarez.)
As noted already, Homeownership Alliance is primarily a public advocacy group that specifically does not lobby Congress or the Administration (Rick Davis).
As for Gramm, his point was that there was no recesssion (technically true) but that people were reacting on an emotional level more than economic. True, advisers to political campaigns should never call voters whiners; but – when GDP is still growing, there’s no absolute recession, and people are still citing “recession” as a given and contributing behavior that might lead to an absolute recession… Gramm’s view might be understandable.
Last, McCain has always said he’s fundamentally a deregulator — that’s indicative of his baseline philosophy, not an absolute indicator of behavior – he has a history of supporting regulation in certain circumstances.

Get a life! John McCain is a patriot and his maverick positions are well known. He is trusted by more Americans to keep this country safe and to get it out of any crisis – including this economical one. Bammy has no record and what little we know of him shows a very poor and weak character and judgement. Hey – you know what they say – judge a person by the company he keeps! Nobama is a tax and spend elitist Liberal – the last thing we need in such a fragile economy. Y’all can dig up all the mud and lies you want about McCain – most Americans TRUST him in times of crisis and honour and respect him for his SERVICE and love of country – not for empty words. You know – action speaks louder than words.

Posted by: Beckie | September 22, 2008, 1:34 pm 1:34 pm

So, after we commit to spend $700Million to a $Trillion to bail out the wealthy and privileged, both candidates continue to pretend they will cut your taxes. Folks, we just bought securities that NO ONE in the business of calculating risk and buying and selling securities wanted. This tells me the short-term and long-term value of this debt is at or near zero. Both parties are talking complete nonsense based on the econobabble being spewed by Wall Street and government “experts”.

As noted already, Homeownership Alliance is primarily a public advocacy group that specifically does not lobby Congress or the Administration (Rick Davis).”
LOL. The Homeownership Alliance is a k street lobbying group with extensive ties to Republican media consultants. Davis was not the only one to lobby for Fannie Mae though. Charlies Black who infamously opined that a terrorist attack on US soil would be good for McCain also made a ton of money lobbying for Fannie Mae.
“As for Gramm, his point was that there was no recesssion (technically true) but that people were reacting on an emotional level more than economic. True, advisers to political campaigns should never call voters whiners; but – when GDP is still growing, there’s no absolute recession, and people are still citing “recession” as a given and contributing behavior that might lead to an absolute recession… Gramm’s view might be understandable.”
McCain just said we have to come up with a new definition for recession because GDP growth alone won’t cut it.
How is Gramm’s view understandable to call people whiners and that the recession is mental when two months later the pillars of our economy went crashing down? I guess that would be an understandable view to the person that was at the forefront of deregulation that caused the mess.
“Last, McCain has always said he’s fundamentally a deregulator — that’s indicative of his baseline philosophy, not an absolute indicator of behavior – he has a history of supporting regulation in certain circumstances.”
Regulation that does nothing. His mortgage crisis solution was to replace one agency with another that had less oversight powers. He believes in deregulation on all levels and has shown that in his voting pattern and stances in everything from finance to broadband access.

Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) is 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the United States. It functions as a think-tank, ‘government watchdog’, and advocacy group for fiscally conservative causes. Its stated goal is “to eliminate waste, fraud, abuse and mismanagement in the federal government.” The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) is the lobbying arm of CAGW, organized as a section 501(c)(4) organization, and therefore permitted to engage in direct lobbying activities. CAGW has been criticized for its links to the tobacco industry and to lobbyists including Jack Abramoff.

but Scheunnemann was the President of the Committee for Liberation of Iraq
an organization that lobbied for the war and whose members include the people who received the first and largest contracts from Iraq.

Throughout its history, CAGW has been accused of fronting lobbying efforts of corporations to give them the appearance of “grassroots” support.[16]In part, this is because CAGW has accepted donations from Phillip Morris, the Olin Foundation, the Bradley Foundation, Microsoft, Merrill-Lynch, and Exxon-Mobil.

“In 1982, the same year John McCain entered the Senate, a bill was put forward that would substantially deregulate the Savings and Loan industry. The Garn-St. Germain Depository Institutions Act was an initiative of the Reagan administration, and was largely authored by lobbyists for the S&L industry — including John McCain’s warm-up speaker at the convention, Fred Thompson. The official description of the bill was “An act to revitalize the housing industry by strengthening the financial stability of home mortgage lending institutions and ensuring the availability of home mortgage loans.” Considering where things stand in 2008, that may sound dubious. It should.
Seven years later, the S&L industry was collapsing. What was the cause? Garn-St. Germain handed the S&Ls a greatly expanded range of capabilities, allowing them to go head to head with full service banks, but it didn’t give them the bank’s regulations.cranked out enough cheap mortgages to fuel a real estate boom. They also experimented with lots of complex, creative — and risky — investments, even though they didn’t have the economic models to really determine the worth of the things they were buying. The result was a mountain of bad debts and worthless “assets.”ranked out enough cheap mortgages to fuel a real estate boom.
They also experimented with lots of complex, creative — and risky — investments, even though they didn’t have the economic models to really determine the worth of the things they were buying. The result was a mountain of bad debts and worthless “assets.” Does any of that sound eerily (or nauseatingly) familiar?”

Romano – “The real problem here is that McCain’s campaign is swarming with 26 advisers or fundraisers who have lobbied for Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac–including nearly a dozen who lobby right now”

The McCain campaign has hinted that Phil Gramm could be considered for Treasury Secretary.
And McCain spokesperson Tucker Bounds, just this last Sunday would not flat out say that Gramm would not be included in a McCain administration. Why not?

So, Jake, looks like you got your facts wrong about Obama linking McCain’s campaign to Phil Gramm. See cincyr’s post. They won’t deny that Phil Gramm, arguably the biggest promoter of deregulation while in Congress and probably still believes in it since they all (meaning Republicans) believe in a unfettered free market (prove me wrong, boys and girls) which is largely responsible for the biggest economic meltdown since the big D.

McCain listed social security and medicare in his balanced budget farce as a area to cut.
McCain refuses to provide any information about how to fund the social security shortage. The media are guilty for not pushing McCain for details. It is an extremely important area.
