Grabbing a Cheesesteak in South Philly, Palin Opines on Pakistan — But Does She Contradict McCain Policy?

Saturday night in Mo-town Philly, and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin found herself at Tony Luke’s on Oregon Avenue.

“It’s Tina Fey!” shouted a bystander as Palin and her daughter Willow walked in.

According to the pool report, one Philadelphian asked Palin, as she stood in the line, if she’d heard from her son Track.

“No," Palin said. "I can’t wait to hear from him. I’ll track him down today.”

A reporter asked if she’d watched Friday night’s presidential debate.

“I did, I did," she said. "Oh. McCain did awesome. He was great. He was absolutely on his game.”

Is she ready for her Thursday night debate with Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del.?

“I am," Palin said. "Look forward to it. Look forward to getting to speak to Americans through that debate, absolutely.”

At the counter, Palin ordered two cheesesteaks, whiz and onions. The woman at the counter asked the governor’s name.

Palin paused.

“Sarah,” she finally said.

The woman laughed. The joke being, apparently, that everyone knew her name already.

“That’s priceless,” said a guy in the kitchen.

**

As Palin was glad handling, a man named Michael Rovito, wearing a Temple University t-shirt, approached Palin

“How about the Pakistan situation?" he asked her. "What’s your thoughts about that.”

“In Pakistan?” she asked.

“What’s going on over there," Rovito said, "like Waziristian?”

“It’s working with Zardari to make sure that we’re all working together to stop the guys from coming in over the border," Palin responded. "And we’ll go from there.”

“Waziristan is blowing up!” exclaimed Rovito.

“Yeah it is," said Palin, "and the economy there is blowing up too.”

“So we do cross the border," he asked, "like from Afghanistan to Pakistan, you think?”

“If that’s what we have to do stop the terrorists from coming any further in," she said, "absolutely, we should.”

**

Today on This Week, George Stephanopoulos asked Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., if what Palin said in any way contradicted McCain’s criticism of Obama for saying aloud that — if given actionable intelligence about high-level al Qaeda targets in Pakistan — the U.S. should strike at targets within Pakistan with or without that government’s permission.

"That seems very similar," George said after playing the Palin quote. "She’s asked, ‘Do we have to cross the border from Afghanistan to Pakistan?’ She says, ‘If that’s what we have to do stop the terrorists from coming any further in, absolutely, we should.’"

McCain said that Palin "shares my view that we will do whatever is necessary. The problem is, you don’t announce it. You don’t — you don’t say to the Pakistanis, ‘We’re coming in unilaterally and carry out operations.’ Teddy Roosevelt, speak softly but carry a big stick. She shares my view on that. That’s just — that’s fundamentals of knowledge and maturity and judgment."

"But she did say there right there we should go in," George said.

"She was in a conversation with some young man that — or whoever it was," McCain said. "She understands and has stated repeatedly that we’re not going to do anything except in America’s national security interest and we are not going to, quote, ‘announce it ahead of time.’ That is — the important part of it is that you do what you have to do, working with these countries, but to announce you’re going to attack another country is not a mature way to address the issue."

George asked if Palin shouldn’t have said that.

"She did fine," McCain said. "She did just fine….This business of, in all due respect, people going around and — with sticking a microphone while conversations are being held, and then all of a sudden that’s — that’s a person’s position, this is a free country, but I don’t think most Americans think that that’s a definitive policy statement made by Governor Palin. And I would hope you wouldn’t, either."

Americans need to know that McCain will not kill Bin Laden if he is just over the border in the mountains of Pakistan. Plain and Simple Laser guided missle? nope! Top-secret troop raid? nope. Covert operations? Nope. Does that sit well with anyone who witnessed what happened on 9/11?

On ABC’s This Week, John McCain said he was a “Teddy Roosevelt Republican” apparently without knowing what Roosevelt stood for. Take the inheritance tax or Death Tax as it is now called. McCain – Palin are against it while McCain is a Teddy Roosevlt type. Why is this McCain imagery odd?
Theordore Roosevelt helped create the inheritance tax aka “death tax”.
When Theodore Roosevelt demanded that Congress pass a steeply graduated inheritance tax in 1906, he was proposing the one bill that members of his own patrician class feared most. In attacking what they cherished – not just their money but also their sense of entitlement and superiority – he was challenging the class system, not the capitalist system, turning the upper-class world upside down. As far as these plutocrats were concerned, T.R. had betrayed his own class to the point of no return.
As John McCain seeks no inheritance tax, he are betraying the legacy of his “mentor”. For what reason? He is stupid and wants to get elected.

McCain stands with one leg on either side of a political boundary and plays it as the moment requires. But that’s what we’ve come to expect from him.

I’m pretty sure that if we looked hard enough we would find a record of John McCain saying the exact same thing. And Palin didn’t just say it to a young man in a restaurant- she announced it to Katie Couric on CBS News last week. Besides, it would be the right move anyway. McCain is just a crotchety old man anymore. And to think, I used to admire the guy….:-(

The day after the RNC convention I predicted to my friends Ms Palin would bow out by Oct 15. I never believed she was intended to make the final run to the White House with McSilly aka McChicken Old Man. Another Gov. is poised and ready and this was McChilly’s Shock and Awe GOTCHA to get the spotlight back on him. Seemed to work at first, but now it’s a disaster.
For McCain’s next magic trick, err….stunt, sadly the Palin’s tiny son will become ill (or perhaps another manufactured crisis) and only a mother’s love will save the day. Go home Mama Moose take care of your calf and let America move on. Frankly you have more baggage than a Greyhound bus. We wish you well and admire your moxie BUT all good things must come to an end. You are becoming a perfect example of what a pimp does to a trick in feeding her false hopes.
YOU will be gracious and we, err…”liberals” will be kind because we too believe family should be first! (Wink, Wink)
This is going to be a LANDSLIDE.

Dear Republicans,
I’m sure it is painful to read editorials and opinions which attack your party and candidate. Please understand that the extreme bitterness and the personal attacks on McCain are, in part, a result of the last 2 elections. There is simply no possible way that a liberal, country-loving Democrat can understand those of you who helped elect W into office twice and we are almost paranoid that you will do it to us again.
I am very bitter when I think of what the Bush/Cheney administration has done to our country, our poor and middle classes, our economy, our constitution, our executive branch, our government, our military, our international standing, and the entire world.
I hope this helps explain some of the excessively derogatory attacks on McCain and Palin.

Posted by: Brad | September 28, 2008, 12:46 pm 12:46 pm

Personally, I don’t think people with McCain signs are racists…they’re just folks that are either in denial, swept up in the usual Republican focus on emotional symbolism, terribly mis- or underinformed, or maybe just really stupid.
I look back with great bitterness at how I abondoned my common sense in 2003 and gave our Republican leadership the benefit of the doubt regarding Iraq and it’s justification; never again.

Posted by: Scott | September 28, 2008, 12:52 pm 12:52 pm

Brad sez: “There is simply no possible way that a liberal, country-loving Democrat can understand those of you who helped elect W into office twice and we are almost paranoid that you will do it to us again.”
I get that. I was a Democrat of the same bent. Then I read about Barack and realized there are deeper dangers than even W.
One is an arrogant self-confidence that if people don’t vote for the man, somehow they are stupid.
Two is watching the left so afraid of losing that they become the right but worse. If you become that which frightens you, you lose anyway.
That breaks all deals.

So McCain doesn’t mind if members of his administration reverse his foreign policy while online at a cheesesteak stand.
He sounds like a hippie.
Except that he does mind when people record what his running mate says when she’s doing photo ops.

Paige, so glad to hear that there’s another regular mom whose main concern is the future of her children. My children, too, have had their passports longer than the Republican VP nominee. When we were in Europe a couple of years ago, I was shocked to witness firsthand the contempt with which the US is regarded in Europe. We had to alter our plans several times, as it was explained to us that such a large group of Americans were not safe everywhere. I have never been involved politically before, but the spectre of McCain’s intent to reinstitute to the draft, his war-mongering mentality, his lack of economic substance has made me and all of my friends alarmed and informed. We cannot afford four more years of the last eight years I implore everyone to PLEASE THINK OF THE FUTURE OF YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN when you place your vote in Nov.

There is a serious problem with respect for women in politics. It is so sad that so many people feel comfortable in disrespecting women, including the media. Yet we so readily condemn other countries for their lack of respect for women. We do not listen, read or reason when it comes to politics. The news is no better. You would think that style would not take priority over substance. There is also a great lack of respect on Obama’s part that is just accepted. If you want to know the truth coming from the Black community, we honestly think that Caucasians are afraid of Obama. He calls Senator McCain “John” instead of addressing him properly. Don’t dare get Cancer and try to live a decent life. All we ever hear is about the possibility of death for Senator McCain. There is no guarantee for any of us. How would each one who constantly “kill” him off feel if you were suddenly diagnosed with cancer? We would rather take an inexperience anybody than a woman. Let’s put some of what Sara Palin has done out there for people to see instead of putting her down. Let’s ask Barack Obama to stop telling stories, copying off others, depending upon others and hiding his inexperience before a big mistake is made. Stop covering up for him, stop being afraid of him and elect the better candidate. I am so surprised with all that newsreporters have seen, they are so naive. Not one of them will stand up and make the truth be known. Long after the Obamas they will have to live with themselves.
Further, Obama talks a good game and so many people are falling for it. We, as Blacks are used to the fast talkers as a part of our culture. We just sit back and laugh at how easy it is to be taken in. We know the truth and we just sit back and laugh. We just sit back and laugh! We laugh at all those media experts who are supposed to be so wise end up being so gullible. You really need to get to know us as a culture before you can presume to enable a person like Obama. You don’t know him at all. If he is elected, you will learn a valuable lesson. Have no fear, but we will know!

As a successful professional woman, I take issue with the issue of respect for women. True respect for women is expecting the same from a candidate irregardless of their gender. Palin is being treated differently by her own campaign and not participating fully in the process. Today, McCain is on the Sunday news programs trying to explain away one of the few interactions she had with the press, and stating that what she said isn’t really what she said. I think the interview with Katie Couric is self-explanatory – even many conservatives are calling for her to step down under the premise of some “family issue” in order to save face. It is ludicrous to say that Obama is hiding anything – that is just the Republican strategy of trying to make people afraid of him in some vague manner. He has been campaigning for two years – believe me if there was anything left to be exposed, Hilary Clinton would have done it in a heartbeat.

It is upsetting to me as an American to see another American be treated the way Sarah Palin is being treated.
A guy from Temple University comes up to her in a Deli Line and asks a question about Pakistan and George Stepanoulolas quotes this and asks John McCain about it in ABC’s Sunday show.
How asinine and how stupid.
Temple University, one only has to know that is an African American University.
One only has to know that the only qualification Obama has to have to get the AA vote is that he is one of them.
He brought up his father being from Kenya in the debate he lost to John McCain. Well give us your birth certificate Obama and quit lying to the country about everything.
It is way to scary to even think that
Obama and old goofy Joe Biden could be elected to run our country.
Sarah and John McCain are genuine, through and through and we know what they are about but we know nothing about Obama. Ever notice how he froths at the mouth when he talks for awhile.
I think its the cocaine and weed he uses that causes this.

If she does well then McCain is still in the race. If she does poorly then his judgement on picking her will be question and his chances to become POTUS will be very slim.

Richard, of course Obama & Palin are right that we should get Bin Laden if we can whether or not Pakistan says its ok.

I find it interesting that McCain supporters deflect criticism of Palin by saying, “but, but Biden makes mistakes too!!!” This is true. He absolutely does. But while Biden may stick his foot in his mouth, or be too long winded at times, there is a clear difference between the two candidates, and anyone with any intellectual honesty knows it: Biden can speak in a coherent fashion about a variety of topics. So far, Palin can’t. Since Barack picked Biden only a month ago, he has done approximately 100 interviews with local and national press; Palin has done 3.
So stop the false equivalency here. Just man up. Does Biden trip up every now in then? Yes. I have no problem acknowledging that. The difference is, Biden has demonstrated competence, openness, and accessibility. Palin has not.

TRW,
To add to your point, Pailn’s gaffes would not look nearly as bad if she was out there taking interviews.
That is what happens when you gamble on a campaign strategy that limits any and all interaction with the press and relies upon stump speeches.
Biden has given 100 interviews since he was nominated.
If the Couric interview had been the 20th Palin had given, would her gaffes matter as much?

No, I’m not ignoring that part of the equation. I am saying people have to acknowledge it is only part of the equation.
Do you see any detail given in the report that the guy asked if we would go in against Zardari’s will?
McCain has not said he would not cross the border into Pakistan. He has certainly not said he would not go into Pakistan if we were working with Zardari.
He has said he would not announce in advance that he would invade an ally, because that puts the ally on the defensive *against us*.
Palin did not contradict him.

Posted by: MayBee | September 28, 2008, 2:59 pm 2:59 pm

The way I took Gov. Palin’s comments was that if we were in hot pursuit we could go across borders to prevent an imminent attack.
But the greater point is that it is one thing to speak about hypotheticals (which Gov. Palin was doing) but it is quite another to declare that invading an ally nation was a planned activity (as Senator Obama has stated).

So Capt Right WInger says that invading an ally is ok to prevent a major attack if stated by the right wing candidate but invasion by an ally to get Bin Laden is the worst thing ever.
Love those knots you tied yoruself in to declare Palin right when she and Obama siad the same thing which is that we should work with Zadari but if we can hit terrorists we should not hesitate.

Posted by: Ryan C | September 28, 2008, 3:11 pm 3:11 pm

Maybee,
Of course we would work with Zadari but do you really think that if we know where Bin Laden is and Zadari says we can’t go in that we should not go in?
=====
What if we know Bin Laden is in London, but Britain is hesitant to turn him over because they fear a terrorism backlash. It could happen.
Would Obama stand up today and say we would bomb Britain if they didn’t help us get Bin Laden? No.
Obama won’t even say he is willing to draw up military plans against *Iran*. Yet he’ll say it about Pakistan.
Pakistan, as troublesome as it is, is an ally. It takes special diplomatic handling, which Obama pretends to be all about.
Sarah Palin did nothing to contradict McCain.

“Obama won’t even say he is willing to draw up military plans against *Iran*. Yet he’ll say it about Pakistan.”
What military plans has Obama drawn up for Pakistan?
He stated in a debate that if we have actionable intelligence about Bin Laden in Pakistan and Pakistan fails to act that we will. Ryan
Or did you make that up like most right wingers do?
So let me ask you this maybee, is it ok for McCain to sing about bombing Iran at a fundraiser?

Paige,
Did you ever ask McCain why he chose Sarah Palin? Could it just somehow be that she was more qualified than Obama? When it comes to women, we always think the worse and then wonder why we get treated the way we do! Yet wa always cry for equal treatment. You may just get what you wish for! I am a Hillary supporter for McCain, and I stand behid what I have said. Let someone heckle you and put your scars from Cancer in an ad or someone you love and see how it feels. We all should work to take care of ourselves. With Democrats now everything is built upon doom and gloom which no candidate can save us from and certainly not Obama. All he does is to tell one story after another and none of them ever is positive. The way they treated Hillary was shameless, yet we as women support the very candidate who helped to sham her! You may very well get Obama whom no one can disagree with. He completely destroyed the meeting at the White House when given a leadership role. It was the democrats who got us in this state. Typical democrat Obama-Go out on the campaign trail and beg for more money while the country is in a financial crisis. Great President!

I think that was a poor choice.
As much as you may agree or disagree with McCain and Obama about Pakistan, however,
Palin did not contradict McCain.

AnneC,
Your claims of being a Hillary supporter would ring more truthful if you didn’t then rail against Democrats for the rest of your post.
Also what does the shielding of Palin from reporters say about her as a candidate?
Does it say she can’t be trusted to answer an off the cuff question?

Posted by: Ryan C | September 28, 2008, 3:36 pm 3:36 pm

Sarah Palin is right,
and Obama is right,
and McCain is wrong.
The American people have suffered through seven years of war. Even just for morale’s sake, they need to hear that we are going to take out Osama bin Laden–if we can–no matter who on earth doesn’t like it. I don’t care if the Paks don’t like it or the Russians don’t like it or the “Arab Street” doesn’t like it.
McCain should make it clear that he and Sarah don’t agree on everything (we already know they don’t agree on drilling in ANWR). And they’ll have more disagreements in the future. In a healthy Administration (unlike the current dysfunctional one), all alternatives are discussed.
As General Patton put it, “When everyone is thinking alike, no one is thinking.”

Unfortunately Ryan I will not even grace your assummption with a response. I am still a Hillary supporter.I merely told the truth!

Palin/Obama are right. I mean every major terrorist activity has links to Pakistan. Every jehadi has done his time in Pakistani terror camp. Yet, the republicans seem to think Pakistan should not be bombed? Why should Pakistan be protected? So that war on terror continues for ever? Or to make a museum out of terror infrastructure for the years to come? McCain may have spent a lot of time in Waziristan(So have many terrorist idiots). That doesn’t make McCain smart.

This is so confusing…
Pre-Palin…we just had to wonder which Johnny Mac would show up for work.
Now we have Sistah Sarah contradicting both McCains…and herself…What a trainwreck

How dare they put a microphone in her face and ask her opinion before she has to a chance to run it by Rove. How can she be expected to give her opinion w/o putting it through the filter of republican operatives. um…. none of the republicans come outta this one looking good…

More “Shuck and Jive” politics from Obama.
McCain – Palin – Leadership you can trust, change you can depend on.

Maybe they should ask her the questions today…so she can come up with an answer by Thursday?

Posted by: Bubba | September 28, 2008, 7:47 pm 7:47 pm

They have already changed the rules of the debate…because she is inexperienced….maybe her questions should be multiple choice?

Posted by: Bubba | September 28, 2008, 7:51 pm 7:51 pm

MayBee,
Of course she contradicted McCain. McCain said we should not reveal ahead of time and she did.

young_voter says :”Biden has done 100 interviews since becoming a VP candidate; Palin only 3. It seems like Obama has chosen talk over action again.”
Sure she acted, that stuff has become the fodder for SNL.
But if you are talking about some other action, what is it that she has done and Biden did not do in this campaign so far

Posted by: Pat | September 28, 2008, 8:34 pm 8:34 pm

A middle-class American can not lose in this election.
In case repubs win, we have 4 more years of Bushisms, this time from the VP. It is a win-win situation.

Posted by: Pat | September 28, 2008, 8:43 pm 8:43 pm

Sounds like Obama stole his talking points from the “Bush” doctrine. Preemptive strike, etc….

Hey, can someone let me know what the format is for Thursday. How is this debate set up?

Want to be a journalist? You don’t need a degree. You don’t have to work for a newspaper or magazine. You needn’t be employed by television or radio. Apparently all you need to do is ask Sarah Palin a question or two in a public setting. Easy as that, it’s “Gotcha journalism” according to McCain & Palin.

Posted by: Deeva | September 30, 2008, 6:14 am 6:14 am

I think Amerticans have to realize and accept the fact that Sarah Palin is McvCain’s running mate because of looks, not smarts! She is a provincial governor who has never travelled abroad and is ignorant as to the foreign cultures. She needs to go back to Alaska her comfort zone! and be replaced by a knowledgable candidate!
