House Republicans Still Not On Board
A spokesman for House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, cautions that House Republicans have not signed on to anything.
Spokesman Kevin Smith said this includes Rep. Spencer Bachus, the ranking Republican on the House Financial Services Committee, who spoke to the press after this morning’s negotiation over the Wall Street bailout bill.
After the meeting, Bachus told reporters, "One thing that I’m encouraged by is something that Sen. (Jack) Reed and I have worked on for taxpayer protection, to see that the taxpayer and the Treasury is reimbursed for their expenditures. And I think that was an important step that we all took. And we’re committed to the tax money — the taxpayer being protected. There was progress today. And I felt like the discussions were very open. And we’re all committed to a successful and positive conclusion."
Bachus was the only House Republican at the meeting. Three Senate Republicans were in attendance. Asked if his boss had signed on to the plan, Bachus’s spokesman said, "this is above my pay grade," and referred a reporter to the House Financial Service Committee staff.
Boehner issued a statement this afternoon, saying, "I am encouraged by the bipartisan progress being made toward an economic package that protects the interests of families, seniors, small businesses, and all taxpayers. However, House Republicans have not agreed to any plan at this point. We owe it to all those with a stake in this process to continue our discussions until we arrive at an agreement that is acceptable on both sides of the aisle — and more importantly, one that serves the interests of American taxpayers. With that in mind, I look forward to joining my colleagues, President Bush, Sen. McCain, and Sen. Obama at the White House later today to take the next critical steps on a rescue package."

I hope this example of political pandering by McCain gets the scorn it deserves. What kind of arrogant fool thinks he and only he can save America? I believe his great “patriotism” is more motivated by falling poll numbers than any REAL concern he has for the economy. This is political grandstanding, plain and simple. McCain has become nothing but a lying self aggrandizing SOB.

Who wants to see a fair Campaign?
If Pesident Bush, does not interfere in Senate meetings, who agrees that the two candidates should act, as a Presiding President, and stay away from the Senate?
How about calling your state Senator?
As O’Reilly says, ‘Fair and Balaced’.

Ridiculous. By pulling this stunt, McCain has given himself and Congressional Republicans the perverse incentive to delay coming to an agreement as long as possible, so he can get out of the debate.

I think Boehner has been hoodwinked enough times by the dems. I do not blame him for being careful.
Once it is in writing, and the leadership has signed off then a joint statement would be in order. Otherwise Sen. Reid may add a provision limiting oil shale development while no one is looking.
It is a sorry time for the republic when our leaders cannot shake hands on a deal and feel each other is honestly committed

The Republican House members have been saying all week that they didn’t support many of the proposed measures.
That’s why Pelosi (and Reid) said they wouldn’t hold the vote unless there was a ‘guarantee’ that enough Reoublicans were on board. The Dems leadership doesn’t want Dem candidates to be on the receiving end of “he supported the bail-out” advertising.
The fact that Repubs aren’t on board is exactly why Bush gave the speech last night and why McCain came back. They’re squeezing from both sides.

There should be a basic comprehension test before anyone can comment. Fox News had a compilation of quotes from Bush, Barney Frank, Alan Greenspan, and John McCain that summarized the history – which was also affirmed by Bill Clinton.
What the footage shows: Through the last 5 years Republicans (including John McCain specifically) have warned of this happening and tried to initiate reform repeatedly… and were always blocked on a partisan divide, with dems saying everything was fine – even after Alan Greenspan gave them dire warnings.
I’m losing all hope for America. If we’re this stupid on basc comprehension then we deserve to have the Chicago mob as our masters.

McCain is a total drama queen, sucking us all into his demagoguery.
Demagoguery n. – a political strategy for obtaining and gaining political power by appealing to the popular prejudices, emotions, fears and expectations of the public — typically via impassioned rhetoric and propaganda, and often using nationalist or populist themes.

Obama once said he would debate John McCain “anywhere, anytime”.
When McCain proposed ten Town Hall meetings for them to do together, taking questions from we, the little people, Obama said he didn’t have any openings available.
Why’s he afraid of us? I’d laugh my head off if he did a town hall type meetng on the national stage. If they’d let people in who had real questions. He’d have his rear handed to him in a plastic bag by the time it was done.

“Republicans have controlled Congress and the White House for 3 of the last 5 years and still control the White House.
McCain cosponsored a bill (written by Hagel in 2003) in May of 2006.”
Sorta true. The Republicans had a majority in the House and Senate in 2005 when Chuck Hagel introduced Senate Bill S.190 but evidently they didn’t control anything. This bill cleared the Senate Banking Committee on a strict 11-9 party line vote, signalling it would meet much resistance on the Senate floor. As I’m sure you know the minority party has options like filibustering when they want to play the obstructionist role. The Republicans knew it would be a losing battle and the bill never made it to the Senate floor for a vote.
BTW, McCain tagged along as a cosponsor in 2006 when the bill had no life left in it. Since then new bills have been introduced in the House and Senate but they’ve been too busy passing National Watermelon Month and National Funeral Director and Mortician Recognition Day legislation.

The teacher asked Little Johnny why he has decided to be different. Little Johnny said, Because I’m not a McCain fan. The teacher asked, Why aren’t you a McCain fan? Johnny said, Because I’m a Democrat.
The teacher asked him why he’s a Democrat. Little Johnny answered, Well, my Mom’s a Democrat and my Dad’s a Democrat, so I’m a Democrat.
Annoyed by this answer, the teacher asked, “If your mom was a moron and your dad was an idiot, what would that make you?”

There was a preceding and nearly identical bill that Hagel intro’d in 2003. S.1058 for the 108th session.
I always thought it was a 2005 intro too but someone yesterday brought up that it was in 2003 that Hagel originally intro’d the bill.
But otherwise I would agree wit your assessment.
Hope you got that powerball ticket ;-)

Obama called to get McCain to sign up to a joint statement. If McCain signed up, Obama was going to put on commercials claiming to be the uniter and saving the bill. If McCain didn’t sign up, Obama would put out a commercial claiming he tried to save the bill but McCain wouldn’t cross the aisle to help.
Obama thought it was a sure thing and then hesitated to announce the agreement because he thought he had McCain where he wanted him. McCain signed then played Obama for the chump at the table. Obama then went on TV to whine about McCain announcing first.
Obama was playing a cheap deuce for a little more poll bounce. McCain trumped him and once again, superior strategy showed what an amateur Obama is in the Big Game.

Ryan,
Thanks for the update, and surprisingly enough I did not hit Powerball last night. The good news is it’s up to $200M for Saturday.
Each side is going to have to swallow some pride on this bill to get it through whether it be pay limits on one side or affordable housing set asides on the other. It’s the same stumbling blocks that go all the way back to 2005, er, 2003. Amazing how they can comprimise when the house is on fire but not when the firewall is creeping up the mountain. Just pathetic.

I kind of like the assessment that Buchanan just made:
McCain has run from the debate into a burning building. He has two choices:
1. Vote for a bailout and alienate his base by being the father of new American socialism.
2. Vote against a bailout and risk financial meltdown, bringing an end to the Republican party.
Knowing McCain he will likely opt for #2.
Weeeee!!!

Underdog,
I have seen a lot of great minds with a lot of great ideas regarding this problem. I have no idea which will work and which won’t. I think many of them take something like your approach.
The problem is that those ideas are so ‘radical’ to the establishment it is like trying to hammer a square peg into a round hole. They don’t have the conceptual (political) tools to allow them much room to move on either side.
It might be possible, but imagine how much time it would take to accomplish such a lofty, and the Right would say,
‘socialist’ policy that all could agree on.
But that’s just the way I see it.

Not too many comments here — lots of connection and email trouble, outside the … DC center?? (Terrible here in California 1 CD — Blue Dog Mike Thompson, anyway…)
Looks like most of the media and Democrats (especially the “leadership” — and Barney Frank and Christopher Dodd) back Bush and the bailout.
And that most of the P E O P L E oppose the bailout — it IS a “bailout”, whatever the Dems say, and “$700 billion” is only the amount that can be taken in one bite, not the upper end –
and that the Republicans, with the people, oppose the bailout.
Shouldn’t about two-thirds of the Congress be turned out for conflict of interest and worse right NOW?!
Starting with Pelosi, Reid, Dodd and Frank? Only a bailout will hide their … uh … you know, complicity with the financial forces.

How much Bank scandel actually follows McCain? Well, He was investigated and largely exonerated in a political influence scandal of the 1980s as a member of the ‘Keating Five’. His connection to Rick Davis, who imbezzeled money from Fannie Mae, as early as last Month. And one of McCains sons, who was a bank auditor, mysteriously left his job , two months before the bank went bankrupt. Even another Senator from an earlier speech, connected McCain to the scandel in the 1980′s. The ‘Keats five’. McCain has told us, he has been in contact with the Senate, but even the Senators said, they had not spoken to him. He just heard of the plan two days ago. McCain has lost Touch. Being touched by CORUPTION, must make him feel a little numb. If he can still feel at all.
I have a question, about any other organizations, he may be a part of.
Americans may be curious to know which one. I suggest transparency be implemented. At least that is McCains platform. It still is, Right?
And guess what, about Todd Palin?

Of course, Sarah could not join. But she could speak at a group meeting. She’s a Female. Only Men join this group. Women join the OTHER ONE.
Who is Senator Richard Shelby…
Who wants the answers?
So McCain sides with FOREIGN CAPITOLIST NAZIS. The Far Right Republicans have voiced their opinions, about America. They ‘Do’ want it to fall. And they said IRAN was bad. CAPITOL TERRORISTS ARE ALREADY IN AMERICA. They are just waiting for Middle America, to kill eachother, trying to get to them. How much ‘Chemicals’ are YOU going to dump on us?
A ‘CHEMICAL WEDDING’, is the story of Far Far Right Republicans. The NAZIS. Do you want more? Palin was right when she said she gets to deal with Russia. Now Richard Shelby, are you sure you are ready for more news about YOUR History. Or McCains? Or shall we reveal more about Palin? We will NOT let you commit Genocide on AMERICANS. NO MIDDLE EASERN CAPITOLIST WILL GET A GOLDEN PARACHUTE. No Believer in God would stand for your Genocide.
Do people really want to know of your Chinese Genicide Plans? Is there an ‘Ear at the Door’? Have you had your ‘FLU’ shot yet? You are not a Republican. You are a Far Out of Touch Nazi.
