Independent Group Running TV Ad in Colorado Accusing Obama of Attacking McCain’s War Wounds

A new independent group called Citizens for Open and Responsive Government says it’s running a TV ad on cable in Colorado that goes after Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., for knowingly attacking Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for not being able to use a computer because of his war wounds.

This is in response to Obama running a TV ad hitting McCain for being out of touch because he doesn’t e-mail or use a computer, which, as we discussed a few days ago, actually has less to do with him being an anachronism and more to do with the wounds he sustained in Vietnam. Small tasks make his shoulders ache, so he tries to avoid any repetitive exercise.

Other than running mate Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del. — who condemned this ad, then seemed to kinda, sorta retract his condemnation — the Obama campaign’s response when asked about this has been to ignore the notion that McCain doesn’t type because of his war wounds.

So, the opening thus provided by Mr. Obama’s hope-mongers, CORG’s ad features Lt. Col. Mike Fairhead (ret.) of Rogers, Ark., a disabled Vietnam War veteran and Purple Heart recipient.

In the ad, after Fairhead introduces himself, the script is as follows:

Narrator: What do Mike Fairhead and John McCain have in common? They are both wounded veterans and neither of them are able use a computer or type an e-mail because of war injuries. Apparently, Barack Obama believes John McCain’s war injuries disqualify him from being commander in chief. This attack is so shameful that even Obama’s own running mate, Joe Biden, described the attack as "terrible," saying, "… [I'd] never have done it."

Fairhead: Mr. Obama, why do you attack Sen. McCain because of his disability?

what is wrong with his mind then? He claims to have invented the “blackberry” yet he dos not about email. Come oh – this is a weak attempt to portray Obama in a bad light – you people are sick to twist the truth around – no better than the conservatives of the late 50′s/early 60′s who did not want blacks to vote

Posted by: jozy | September 24, 2008, 12:41 pm 12:41 pm

From my understanding, I thought that McCain had said he didn’t know how to use email, not that he couldn’t. I could be wrong, and if anyone has sources I would be interested in seeing them.

Basic Question – What disability does Senator McCain have that has stopped him from using a computer? He is not incapacitated.

Obama: Action belie your words.

Posted by: amy | September 24, 2008, 12:43 pm 12:43 pm

He cannot use a computer because he never bothered to learn. I do not pretend to know the extent of the mans war injuries or want to dissmiss the pain and suffering he did go thru. People who are blind use the computer, people who are paralized use computers, people with all sorts of siaabilities use computers. McCain’s choice to not even bother learning is his choice not a handicap.

We’ve had racism and sexism in this election, but maybe we should draw the line at wound-ism. We all respect McCain’s suffering as a POW, how could you not? I’d just prefer not to be thrashed with it daily as an avoidance of talking about issues.

Posted by: obamamama | September 24, 2008, 12:45 pm 12:45 pm

This is a scurrilous attack that ignores a rather large and troubling fact: John McCain, who uses his war hero status to promote himself whenever possible, admitted that he DIDN’T KNOW HOW to send an email. He said that he is “ILLITERATE” when it comes to computers. So the attack is not on McCain’s war wounds, but his ignorance of an everyday working reality for millions of Americans. In today’s technological society, it’s pretty hard to imagine a President NOT KNOWING HOW to use basic technology.

Joe Biden was out in Ohio on the campaign trail and he has just delivered a brilliant speech on foreign policy while Sarah Palin is in New York collecting handshakes from “world leaders”.
I dont understand why people are so surprised that she is been shielded from the press. Isnt it obvious that she has absolutely no foreign policy experience whatsoever except from the fact that she can see Russia from her back garden.
Honestly, I still dont know why the media is not questioning McCain’s ‘Country First’ manstra. He OBVIOUSLY DID NOT PUT COUNTRY FIRST when he selected her as his running mate.
We all know why he did but unfortunately for him the only people he has managed to galvanize are the evangelical base of the GOP. Her post convention bubble has finally bust! Obama is now pulling away from McCain and listening to Biden’s speech on foreign policy I am confident that Obama will destroy McCain on Friday.

He cannot use his war wounds anymore as an excuse for being out of touch with Americans.

How desperate.
My dad lost a leg from Vietnam and he runs.
My niece has spina bifida, and she uses a computer.
Stephen Hawking cannot move at all, and he uses a computer.
I have a blind friend who also uses a computer.
This is ridiculous to try and insinuate that McCain’s technological illiteracy is a result of a war. If McCain were so disabled, he wouldn’t be able to drive a car or go golfing. (He does both).

I’m not going to lie, the GOP and this independent group is pushing this in a way that does kind of make people laugh. I doubt McCain would want people to feel sorry for him. If I was this group, I wouldnt remind people of John McCain’s handicaps. That gives people a reason to not want him to be in charge.

The ad was more about changing with the times not war unjuries. I can’t see many people buying the McCain ad since Obama goes way out of his way to compliment McCain for his service.

Speak for yourself when you say “we all respect McCain’s service.” I don’t. McCain was a POW because of his own negligence and hot headedness. He flew beyond a designated spot and crashed his 5th plane. He was a loser pilot. That’s why he was a POW and he’s spent the last 40 years milking it.

Oh, come on. Notwithstanding the myriad options out there that allow people with disabilities to make use of modern technologies, John McCain has been photographed using a blackberry. The man is capable (I don’t doubt, though, that as a result of his war wounds, he does require some adaption, etc.), he just does not want to learn.

McCain said, “I’m learning to get online myself”. Technological espionage is a national security issue. It would behoove us to have someone in office who understands the Internet. We’re not in the 1950s or the 1980s for that matter. Times change.

But… I am going to say it.
And whether his impulsice anger is to be blamed on the war or on his own personal failings. I don’t care. He’s not fit to lead.

I think what the Obama ad referenced, is John McCain “out of touchness” with the age of technolgy. Let’s face it ,Stephen Hawking uses a computer. So if he wanted to, he would be able to do the same. And another thing,if people don’t wake up and stop being lead down the wrong path. Do we OWE Senator McCain the Presidency, because he was a POW? How does that make him MORE qualified? If anything, and I certainly respect what he went through, but it seems that he was really out of touch with the war because he was secluded as a POW, and gained No experience AT All.

blip…thanks for your admission, its the first crucical step…..hawking’s disability (ALS), has so disabled his body (he actually has outlived the average lifespan for someone with the full-blown disease), that electrodes and tiny monitors send signals to a specially made computer which interpret the tiniest of conscious movements he makes (with his eyes, or whatever), so that with such twitches, he effectively “talks” through the computer, and given that it is a computer, he can also use its more general functions to do the work that he does (theoretical physics)….but the fact remains that his bio-technological connection with his computer allows him the easiest way to communicate with the world in ways he would otherwise be unable to do so…..

It’s just an excuse from a party that loves to make excuses for itself.
But to punish everyone else.
They dragged the US into the worst economic turmoil that I have ever seen.
Instead of saying “sorry”…. they are now blaming the financial crisis on black people getting mortgages. No joke. Conservative blogs are saying that this economic downturn is because Democrats forced the banking industry to loan money to high risk groups (by which they mean poor people and minorities).
They never accept responsibility themselves. They always make excuses for themselves. And if you get in hot water, they point at you and blame you.
(It reminds me of McCain accusing Obama of being an elitist…. but then discovering that McCain owns more houses than he can count).

Posted by: Ruth | September 24, 2008, 1:10 pm 1:10 pm

Reality time here folks: computers have voice recognition programs that would allow McCain to use them to ‘write’ emails.
Also, let’s get in touch with the facts: keyboards are not fixed in space and time so it would be easy enough for McCain to perch the keyboard on his lap or anyplace else where it is comfortable for him to use.
Also, you don’t have to do much repetitive key strikeing to move a mouse and click and point, which is all some applications require.
Any port in a storm, any excuse available, any lie imagined….yep, that’s John McCain

the fact of the matter is that Bill Clinton practices better the “politics of change” that obama supposedly preaches then his own supporters….the fact of the matter is that the many supporters of obama have reduced themselves to mirror images of the neo-conservatives who supported dubya for so many years, by way of their arrogance and ignorance against anyone who dared disagree with them…..this current presidential election has devolved past anything i have observed in the past elections, not so much because of how they have turned so negative (thanks to the decidedly anti-American karl rove and his spawn), but because of the grand expectations obama gave with his “inspirational” speeches and promises…..he keeps attacking the republicans for not talking about the issues, and then he or his campaign or his lemmings cry about anything else but the issues……WE KNOW THAT THIS CURRENT ADMINISTRATION IS THE WORST IN HISTORY……the question is: what will the next administration do to fix America? both mccain and obama are guilty of talking in abstractions and playing the blame game……i don’t care anymore who broke it, i want to hear how they will fix it….and eloquent words alone won’t do it….

Posted by: Mack | September 24, 2008, 1:12 pm 1:12 pm

Damage to his shoulders should not prevent him from using a computer. I have gone through 4 shoulder surgeries, and besides the few weeks my arm was completely immobilized, I was able to continue working. In fact, it did not bother my shoulder at all since my arm was supported by the desk. As long as the work space is set up at the right height, which would be required due to the ADA, there is no undue stress on the shoulder. There would be more stress from him holding a microphone for 30 minutes to an hour during his campaigning.
Plus, this is making a mockery out of all the people who have overcome their disabilities, paralysis, blindness, amputation, etc., to use computers.

Posted by: Mack | September 24, 2008, 1:12 pm 1:12 pm

I thought when the ad first aired the public judged it to be not making fun of war injuries – because use of computers is far more dependent on cerebral exercise than physical (when devices for disabled users are factored in).
If his brain isn’t working well, what is he doing running for President?

Posted by: Sara | September 24, 2008, 1:13 pm 1:13 pm

So which is it? McCain himself admitted that he was computer illiterate. Then his people say he invented the Blackberry. And then his people say he doesn’t use a computer because of his war injuries.
Cry me a river. Many people with disabilities — including my husband — are not able to use keyboards. Many of them use software to make voice commands. So if McCain doesn’t use a computer it’s because he isn’t interested in doing so.
Age has nothing to do with it. My father, who is 85, is extremely computer literate — and has absolutely no tech background. It’s all about outlook — are you interested in learning and doing new things or aren’t you?

Posted by: dl (the real one) | September 24, 2008, 1:13 pm 1:13 pm

Chris… The point is that technology exists to help people even with severe disabilities use computers. It is cheap and easy to use.
Hawking’s interface is fairly sophisticated, but my blind friend uses inexpensive voice-to-text software for many of her tasks. Plus, she clicks through links and buttons using the tab keys, because she cannot use a mouse.
If he was curious about computers, it would be very easy for him to use one. But he’s out of touch because he can be.
I feel sorry that he is incurious and stubborn. The injusry itself hasn’t seemed to interfere too much with his ability to play golf.

Posted by: Blip | September 24, 2008, 1:14 pm 1:14 pm

It would be nice if ALL veterans had the opportunity to have good health care recovering from their war injuries. The Disabled American Veterans publish a list of how members of Congress voted on veterans legislation. McCain, the POW war hero, received a horrific 20 out of 100 while Obama received a 92.
Here’s just a few reasons why McCain receives such a failing grade:
– Voted AGAINST an amendment providing $20 billion to the VA’s medical facilities. [5/4/06]
– Voted AGAINST providing $430 million to the VA for outpatient care “and treatment for veterans,” one of only 13 senators to do so. [4/26/06]
– Voted AGAINST increasing VA funding by $1.5 billion by closing corporate loopholes. [3/14/06]
– Voted AGAINST increasing VA funding by $1.8 billion by ending “abusive tax loopholes.” [3/10/04]

Let’s see now. Obama ran an ad that said “McCain doesn’t know how” to use a computer.or e-mail. Then Jake Tapper ignores the part about “doesn’t know how” and writes that McCain is physically unable to type repeatedly without aching because of his war wounds. He says McCain’s people did not want him to write about that. Then McCain’s buddies, using Jake’s column, run an ad that flatly lies by saying “Barak Obama believes John McCain’s war injuries disqualify him”
And Jake pats himself on the back for his first blog instead of subjecting the ad to fact testing.

Posted by: ricky | September 24, 2008, 1:15 pm 1:15 pm

You know why so many blogs have Republican letters? Because the Republicans have made a concerted effort to flood the newspapers and internet with pro-McCain. It isn’t that the writers necessarily believe what they are writing; it’s that they are getting paid to write it.
Most interesting story about the spin machine that is the basis for the McCain efforts on the internet this morning. They have a backroom factory doing this sort of stuff.

More recent reports indicate that he is actually learning to use a computer. In fact, McCain told The New York Times in July that he’ll soon be up to speed on using the Internet.
McCain can type. But using a keyboard for long periods is uncomfortable for him. He says he’s been an “illiterate” on a computer. But he says now he’s learning to use the Internet.

There are lots of devices people with disability can use in this age in order to help them use computers. Being a disabled person myself, I hate to find excuses. But that’s beside the point.
The ad seems to calling on people to have pity for McCain and vote for him simply because he has some disability. I am not sure the old McCain himself would have wanted that. It would be nice though to see how the new MacCain reacts to this.

I run a real estate development company. I can use my computer pretty well, even in some of the complex proforma and project scheduling programs. I could be better if I spent the time to learn, but I have people who do it for me and give me the summaries. I can’t use the CAD/CAM architectural and engineering programs, but I have architects and engineers for that. Oh. wait. They don’t actually do it themselves, they have people to do the CAD/CAM.
They’re called interns.
My 8 year old daughter knows almost as much as I do about the computer. Big deal. She consistantly beats me at Lego Star Wars on the Wii, too. I don’t even try her 12 year old cousin on Grand Theft Auto anymore.
But if I was really interested, I’d take the time to learn.

But, because of the way you have voted in the past, I have to work on the computers daily…9 to 10 hours, because I can’t get health insurance… because of your vote, your vote to make the richer rich and keep the average American down. People should read Smedley Butler’s account of the planned coup against FDR.
There are lots of historical parallels. A bunch of rich conservatives were cared of FDR so they planned to overthrow the US government and install a new government, sympathetic to their business interests.
It’s all part of the public record. But conservatives don’t like to talk about it. It gets in the way of their flag waving.

Jake,
A few questions:
1. Why do you continue to beat this dead horse?
2. Why can John McCain flip BBQ on his grill, but he can’t click a mouse button with one finger?
3. Why are people more outraged about Senator Obama telling the truth about John McCain’s computer literacy (whatever the reason), than they are about the McCain campaign lying about EVERYTHING?
4. Why is nobody talking about the
Keating 5, when John McCain put pressure on Federal Regulators to go easy on his friend Keating? Sounds just like Sarah Palin and Troopergate, huh? And what about Cindy McCain’s involvement with a Keating Real Estate firm, a CLEAR conflict of interest for John McCain?
Which is more relevant to the countries future – John McCain’s involvment in a HUGE SCANDAL involving the financial sector or John McCain’s “hurt feelings” that someone would dare mention that he is not keeping up with modern society?

Posted by: Nobodys fool | September 24, 2008, 1:47 pm 1:47 pm

Ah, the “POW card” yet again. There is no reason why Senator McCain could not have easily accomodated himself to the modern computer world. You know, it’s unfortunate to see ABC parrot this nonsense. No one was attacking McCain over his war wounds. He was attacked for being out of touch, and that’s why Biden put out the follow up statement to clarify his earlier remarks. Yet, there’s a bigger problem with all of this. No one is expecting McCain to type 70 words per minute, and spend hours and hours on a computer. But, is it really too much to ask that the next leader of this country know how to use the technological development that may define the future of this country, even the world? But an even greater problem exists with this phony argument. The biggest problem with this whole (non)issue is this: There are voice technology programs that don’t require you to type. If quadriplegics, people who can’t use ANY of their limbs, can use a computer by simply using their voice, why can’t John McCain? I respect McCain’s service and understand his wounds, but they don’t prevent McCain from using a computer; his mindset does. With today’s technology, there’s no excuse for someone to not know how to use a computer. If you WANT to do it, it can be done.

And Obama is lucky if he lives as long as John McCain. There are many young people dying today. An example his mother died at age 53 and I believe his father died younger or a few years older. People didn’t die from any of Obama’s bad choices. You can exaggerate some of Obama’s acquaintances, or those of his youth, but that still doesn’t compare to McCain’s choices since McCain has been an adult. Several big ones I can think of recently are the war in Iraq, deregulation, stealing from retired people (Keating 5), and choice of campaign staff.

I wonder if he knows that John McCain wants to privative the VA, and has not co-sponsored one piece of current “key legislation” supported by the Veterans of Foreign Wars? I wonder if that Veteran knows that Senator Obama has an 80% approval rating from the Disabled Veterans of America, and is the only Presidential Candidate that volunteered to serve on the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee? Biden: “Stand up Chuck, oh got love ya, you’re in a wheelchair, you can’t, everybody stand up for Chuck” Badabing.
Obama: Iran is just a tiny country, what are we afraid of?
Biden”Obama thinks the AIG bailout is good for the country. (drumroll)
At the same time, different state
Obama:”The bailout is not a good idea”.
I guess Biden didn’t get the e-mail informing what Obama’s positions were for that day, since he changes them with his underwear.
They aren’t good for much, but they are great for laughs.

Jake, you bought into the repub propaganda line here. My wife is an occupational therapist, and she tells me there are plenty of adaptive technologies out there that would enable McCain to use a computer. People who are paralyzed from the chest down and people who suffer from severe cerebral palsy manage to do it, despite their inability to type or even manipulate a computer mouse. Quit making excuses for McCain about his ignorance of computers.

Every political cycle has it’s negative ads- whether they are approved by the official candidate or party.
We need to deal with the facts- not the fiction or inflamatory remarks- founded or unfounded.
Fact is- Barry is going to LOSE – not because he is Black- but because he is GREEN. Ineffectual, empty suit with Marxist ideas.
It’s also about “the company he keeps.”
He was married, had his children baptised and spent 20 years in the pews of hate mongering spiritual MENTOR Rev. Jeremiah “G.D. America” Wright?
Friends with convicted felon Tony Rezko- who helped him buy his home at a discounted rate and funnels money into his campaign.
Friends with unrepentant terrorists Bill Ayres and Bernadette Dorhn. Serving on the CAC and the Woods Foundation- more raising money and community agitating, straight from The Rules for Radicals book by Saul Alinsky.
Barry Soetoro Barack Hussein Obama and his his advisors are up to their eyeballs in the Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae scandal.
Instead of this huge bailout- these politicians that lined their pockets should be made to pay the money back, be investigated and prosecuted!
These are the real issues.
And this was not the result of 8 years of Bush- it started in the Jimmy Carter administration and was accelerated by Bill Clinton- who signed a bill that would loosen the banking standards, create liar loans- and gave money to people to buy homes they couldn’t afford.
Do you homework and Google some of the above names with Obama -
Here’s a couple more:
Farrakhan
Moamar Gaddafy
Jim Johnson
Christopher Dodd
Achmedinjad
Hugo Chavez
Yes- the terrorists, dictators, crazies and lefties – all around the globe- are licking their lips over an Obama victory- because his Socialist ideals will weaken our great nation.
And they relish the thought!
Final thought: Shame on the Obama camp (and this should be investigated as well) for threatening the organizers of the Jewish anti-Iran demonstration- by threatening to get the IRS to take away their non-profit status if they didn’t “dis-invite” Sarah Palin.
Chicago machine thug tactics!
And the MSM didn’t report that the event turned into an “anti-Obama” demonstration.
God Bless America

did you know that when he

civilian facilities like

reason john was shot down
was because he was a lousy

no wonder they say he was

“..People didn’t die from any of Obama’s bad choices..”
And you’re 100% certain of that statement? What research do you have to back that up?
I would question that statement in light of his votes on “born-alive abortions,” and also in light of his perfect ability to turn the other cheek regarding his constituents residing in the sub-standard apartment complexes run by his slumlord pal, Tony Rezko.

I’ve been singing “Lies, Lies, Lies” by The Thompson Twins for the last month. Why stop now? Rewind to interviews McCain gave to both Politico and The New York Times where he explained…
He can go on the internet and use electronics.
He simply chooses not to.
John McCain admitted it himself. His war torture has nothing to do with it.
Meanwhile, we have Rick ‘cancel lunch with the reporters’ Davis and Randy ‘Sarah, meet the clients of Orion Services, my company’ Schuenemann. Did we mention Randy, foreign policy advisor to McCain, is taking Sarah to see his ‘former’ clients – the president of Georgia and Ukraine? Did we mention his job as lobbyist at Orion Services was to get other nations to help Georgia and Ukraine get into NATO?

Let’s all talk about McCain’s handling of the last big Wall Street economic meltdown instead. That was the Savings and Loan disaster/bailout of the late 1980′s.
I know all you “kids for McCain” that post here can’t remember, so let me refresh your memories.
McCain was the dirtiest of a group of 5 Senators in the S&L scandal and the only one that took actual money and favors for trying to cover-up and stop the investigation of one of the BIGGEST Wall Street crooks in history, Charles Keating!

I love America. Based on comments made by his wife and his associates I really question whether Barry loves America. It also makes me quesiton his motivations for wanting to be President. Does he want to use the position of power to spread the hate and lies that he learned from Wright and Ayers?

Obama has been peddling the notion for a long time that McCain is out of touch because he does not use a computer. He keeps pushing this idea long after it was pointed out in the press that McCain’s injuries make it difficult for him to use the computer.
So, what is Obama up to? Does he figure people do not know of McCain’s injuries? Unlikely. What he is probably doing is just what the ad said, criticizing McCain for having war injuries — thus emphasizing McCain’s supposed disabilities.
Pretty low down if you ask me; but hey, this is Obama we are talking about. He is the man who turned Bill Clinton into a racist. There is no place too low for Obama to go.
It is hard to believe people want this thoroughly dishonorable man to be president.

John McCain is using his “injuries” as a crutch to hide the fact that he is really is out of step not only with America but the WORLD.
Right now he’s trying to DELAY the debates because of the bailout conversations being held. How convenient. He doesn’t WANT to field questions because he KNOWS he’s going to get hammered considering he is the champion of deregulation.

This is stupid. Disabled people use computers all the time. It is called SPEECH RECOGNITION.
What a low blow to disabled people to imply that they can’t use a computer.
McCain is simply not comfortable using a computer because he wasn’t taught to use one and adapt it for himself when they came out. It is a fact.
You know like, women that don’t make as much as men? He just needs more training.

But what is shameful is doing a misleading ad about Obama on McCain’s lack of knowledge on computers. Now what we are seeing is the media responding the Republican spin instead of helping the voters with the issues. Which has more importance the spin or the issues?

Now I know why McCain is suspending his campaign to go bail out his rich CEO buddies. He has lost this election.

Breaking News
McCain says will suspend campaign to return to Washington Thursday to help with bailout negotiations, asks that Friday debate with Obama be postponed so bailout negotiations can continue 2:51pm EDT”
This all happened after McCain’s last remaining economic adviser, Sarah Palin, told Katie Couric that we’re headed towards a Great Depression.
My guess is that McCain will rent a helicopter and fly over Wall Street to survey the damage, then rescue any CEOs who may be stranded on roof tops.

This explains a lot! Because of not being able to use the internet, McCain is cut off from hundreds of independent sources that would contradict his lobbyists who write legislation for him. I presume writing hurts too.
For most of this two year campaign, the TV news spent prime-time spewing gossip-of-the-week while spending 5 minutes/day on the candidate’s real record and real issues. American democracy would be dead if not for the internet.

You know, Steven Hawking seems to be using technology pretty well.
McCain’s “war wounds” can’t be an excuse for everything, can they? I mean, he can’t both shake hands and give thumbs up and use his cell phone, drive his 13 cars, invent the Blackberry, and yet not be able to use a computer because of war wounds. Can he?

Posted by: David | September 24, 2008, 4:46 pm 4:46 pm

This is B.S. Many disabled people use computers, people with disabilities a lot more substantial than mccains. They adapted because they understood the access that a computer could give them information, access, freedom. McCain has never tried because he is not intellectually curious. That’s Obama’s point. To turn this into yet another POW story is — lame and typical.

Nice try, Johhny Boy, flipping Obama’s comment about how “out of touch” you are with everyday American life, with absolutely no reference to any physical aspect of using a computer….and since you have no defense, you pulled out the POW card and look for pity, saying Obama was questionning your disability!
If your disabilities are so bad, should you take on the stress of the presidentcy? Now, there’s an issue.
Just like when you were called out for not remembering how many houses you owned (11), and you had no real defense…you pulled out the POW card…and tried to distract everyone with “well when you’ve been locked up in a cell with no kitchen table…”
You don’t fool me, Johnny Boy. I read you couldn’t lift your arms up over your head, not that you couldn’t sit at a chair and type.
Did Franklin Delano Roosevelt use his polio to duck criticisms and manipulate sympathy, or get a free pass? NO, because he was a man, not a wimp.

McCain described himself as “an illiterate” when it comes to computer. To ascribe his illiteracy to war wounds defies common sense. Until his illiteracy became a source of embarrassment, McCain was perfectly content to live in the pre-computer age.
Another instance of McCain crying POW to dodge a legitimate issue.

Posted by: MarkinKC | September 24, 2008, 10:09 pm 10:09 pm

if war wounds keep him from using a computer how did he pass a flight physical, which most Americans couldn’t pass, and serve 15 more years in the Navy… flying a jet? How did he go from flying a jet to 100% disabled…. unless the war “injuries” his disability is based on is mental..
The republcians warned us in 2000 he had mental problems.

No one is making fun of his service. What we’re complaining about is that he doesn’t even seem keen to keep in touch or in step with the times, from all his previous interviews, he created that impression-not that his wounds hurt him.

How ’bout this: let’s ask David Patterson if he’s ever used “I’m blind” as an excuse for not having read a piece of legislation.
I’m guessing no.
There are many disabled people in the United States. There are hella disabled vets – and more all the time. Believe it or not, there are even disabled elected officials. McCain is the ONLY one I’ve heard use his “war wounds” as an excuse for not keeping up with the demands of his job.
Obama didn’t “attack” a person with disabilities. He called into question McCain’s fitness to be our Commander-in-Chief. And yeah, if his “war wounds” are so significant that they keep him stuck in POWland, then I think we should be questioning McCain’s ability to lead.
I say this as someone DEEPLY INVESTED in disability rights. I’m insulted by the McCain campaign’s attempt to coopt the “pity vote” on this, on “special needs children,” and on disabilities issues in general. It would be different if he had EVER done anything for us.

I think McCain’s refusal to use a computer is a side effect of having 300 million dollars rather than having war wounds. Most paraplegics and quadriplegics in this country use computers.
