Lipstick Smear: Obama Assails ‘Latest Made-Up Controversy by the John McCain Campaign’
In Norfolk, Va., this morning, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., directly took on the false charge by Sen. John McCain’s, R-Ariz., campaign that Obama had called Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin a pig. Obama called it "the latest made-up controversy by the John McCain campaign."
Tuesday night in Lebanon, Va., Obama — talking about McCain’s attempts to paint himself as an agent of change on various issues — said, "you can put lipstick on a pig; it’s still a pig."
Palin last week had joked that the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull is lipstick, and many members of the audience took Obama’s comment as an allusion to Palin’s remarks. (Though not as Obama calling the governor a pig.)
The McCain campaign immediately — falsely and flatly — asserted that Obama had called Palin a pig. Wednesday morning the McCain campaign launched a Web video repeating the false claim.
"What their campaign has done this morning is the same game that has made people sick and tired of politics in this country," Obama said. "They seize on an innocent remark, try to take it out of context, throw up an outrageous ad, because they know that it’s catnip for the media."
Obama explained to the students at Granby High School that, the night before, he’d been discussing McCain’s economic policies and made the lipstick-on-a-pig line, and "suddenly they say,’ You must be talking about the governor of Alaska!’"
The crowd laughed.
"It would be funny," Obama said, "except the news media decided that that was the lead story yesterday."
He charged that "the McCain campaign would much rather the story be about phony and foolish diversions than about the future."
Obama said, "this happens every election cycle -– every four years, this is what we do. We’ve got an energy crisis … we have an education system that is not working for too many of our children and making us less competitive. We have an economy that is creating hardships for families all across America. We’ve got two wars going on -– veterans coming home, not being cared for. And this is what they want to talk about. This is what they want to spend two of the last 55 days talking about!
"You know, who ends up losing at the end of the day? It’s not the Democratic candidate; it’s not the Republican candidate. It’s you, the American people. Because then we go another year, or another four years, or another eight years without addressing the issues that matter to you.
"Enough!" Obama said. "I don’t care what they say about me. But I love this country too much for them to take over another election with lies, and phony outrage and Swift Boat politics. Enough is enough. These are serious times and they call for a serious debate about where to take the nation…
"Spare me the phony outrage, spare me the phony talk about change; we have real problems in this country right now," Obama continued. "The American people are looking to us for answers. Not distractions, not diversions, not manipulations. They want real answers to the real problems we are facing. That’s the kind that I intend to have because that’s the kind of debate the American people deserve. "

McCain’s camp charges that Obama using a phrase John McCain used to describe Hillary Clinton’s health care plan” if you put lipstick on a pig its still a pig” is an attack on Sarah Palin. Of course, when McCain made the joke that the reason Chelsea Clinto was so ugly was because Janet Reno was her father, that was not an attack. Which episode got more coverage?

Yes, we do have serious issues to discuss. The notion that BO is just going to dismiss criticism of him while piling it on others is crazy. Obama is a liberal left-wing nut job who cries and whines and plays the race card. Boo hoo. He’s stinky like old fish.

Obama probably didn’t mean Palin was a pig.
But how stupid can he be to even make any comment at all about lipstick and a pig?
And Biden’s dumb comment about Palin being a step backwards for women.
That was a worse comment than Obama’s.
I can see why women are going to McCain.

Obama goes to a troubled public school and uses his time to bash his political opponents, feel sorry for himself, and cuddle up to the left-wing media. beware the anti-media voter. Maybe Obama feels safer in Norfolk that Chicago, as their public schools are the worst and most dangerous in the country> that is Obama reform. The worst schools in the country. Notice the MSM not taking flights to Chicago to check out Obama’s educational record?

Sarah Palin is a LIER! She came out on stage in front of 40 milloon people and LIED! NOw she is hiding public records in Alaska! What is she hiding? How is this change? She is hiding wmails that came to and from her office as govenor. All those emails are public records, and she won’t let the public see them. Now this sounds very familuar to what we got alredy in a VP. Palin = Cheeny in a dress with lipstick on!

Where in the article did you state the origin of the “lipstick on a pig reference” or the fact McCain used that old line with HILLARY. It is an old saying and this blows back poorly to the McCain campaign, This makes “silly season” look silly.
From the Urban Dictionary:
putting lipstick on a pig
A term used by many, generally in reference to someone who may be trying to make something or someone look appealing or attractive when it quite clearly will not work, or will only deceive the dumbest of people.

I watched the Speech on BBC AND Fox News.
I was happy that Brarack Obama came out to set the record straight.
But the question is, will the Mccain’s Campaign allow the controversy to rest?
I don’t think so.
This is Politics. It about preying on the emotions, fear and the ignorance of the Electors.
The Right is good at this. It has been effective these past eight years and it could be effective again if we have not learnt from the mistakes of the past.
But I hope we are wiser now. I hope we can’t be taken for a ride again. I hope we will let them know that we are not stupid.
The choice is our to make.

He went on OReilly because he was desperate for those swing voters that watch FOX.

McCain used the phrase at least three times in campaigns. Must have been because he was a POW.If Biden had used it, there would be a plagiarism charge byy McCain. The ad on sex education was another cheap shot from the McCain campaign as the bill had to do with making children aware of sexual predators with age appropriate instruction. Once again the Republicans combine no shame with more of the same.

BO’s judgement is the issue here. About a week after Sarah Palin WOWed America, this imbecile Obama tries to upstage her with his little joke. It failed and failed miserably. It doesn’t matter if he was calling her a pig or not, using this comment after her joke was bad judgement. Not the man or woman I want in the white house. No way No how No Obama.

From 10/11/2007 – McCain says:McCain criticized Democratic contenders for offering what he called costly universal health care proposals that require too much government regulation. While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s health-care plan, he said it was “eerily reminiscent” of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the early 1990s.
“I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig,” he said of her proposal.
Clinton has maintained her proposal, that also would utilize tax credits for individuals and small business, would not create a huge government bureaucracy.

Considering an advertiser had to remove the “pig” analogy from a TV ad a while back, when there was no implication about any particular woman, even in the ad, I think that the outrage is somewhat justified. Ther remark was clearly out of line. If the remark did not imply Palin, than what is the pig?
Does anyone remember what the commercial was for? It was a group of office employees discussing a presentation they had to give.

Jake Tapper, – ask yourself this question; even IF Barack is correct about this being a “non-issue” – how long is it before the American people grow weary of Barack’s CONSTANT drum beat that nearly everything that he says or does that appears to be controversial in any way, shape or form, is, in his words, “simply distractions”. He said the same thing about his pastor of over 20 years, Wright, right? At a certain point, it is Barack’s JUDGEMENT [or lack of it] that is called into serious question. He creates his own drama and baggage, and then claims that that bag does not belong to him. It does. He would have done himself better if he had simply ignored this new controversy and moved on. His ego would not allow that.
Posted by: PhillyPaul | September 10, 2008, 11:22 am 11:22 am
Jake, Obama cannot spin his way out of this. He should have just said he was sorry for any misinterpretation and moved on. It was a cleverly crafted statement, not a direct attack, but the meaning was implied and he got caught.
And the McCain camp made an accusation about that implied meaning, they did not lie. And whether or not you want to believe something else is immaterial. You cannot change what Obama’s supporters took away from the statement. Saying McCain’s people are lying is exposing your own bias.
And Obama is definitely feeling the heat for him to react this erratically. He is losing women’s support, and this kind of flailing is not helping him. Nor is this incredibly biased coverage. You all are protesting way too much, you’re giving yourselves away here.
He messed up. And Joe Biden messed up the other day too with his ham-handed statement on implying that Palin is a bad mother for not supporting stem cell research. In my opinion that story is going to be worse on them.

Have you ever noticed that while the GOP has trailed in the polls, they say, well polls do not matter. Yet, as soon as they make some gains in the polls, they yell and scream at the top of their lungs…look we are gaining. Polls do not matter. The ground game matters and Obama has been building a 50 state ground game since June. Way ahead of McCain. I have seen the ground game in action. Fred, I’m embarrassed for you, and others like you. Interesting, CNN had a feature in which several representatives at headquarters of both parties, and voters registered in both parties, were interviewed in southern Ohio, PA, and W.VA. A prevailing theme was that many voters admitted to being unable to vote for a black man, no matter who the black candidate was or what he stood for. The interviewer and analyst noted that many of them supported this by claiming their belief in disproved rumors such as Obama being a Muslim, taking his oath on the Koran, not being a US citizen — and that they clung to these lies to justify reasons for voting against him, rather than admitting on air that they were against his race. Sad, pathetic, ignorant…. Go on, vote against your own economic and general self-interest again, and good luck in the next 4 years.

Audience laughs again.
Now he’s ashamed, as he should be, and making it sound like an innocent remark, and he has the nerve to defend himself at a school. It boggles the mind how easily some people are latching onto these false claims of sexism, or any of the many false claims, as if they’re worth the time of day.
No one called anyone a pig, even if someone is clueless enough to think that. People keep referring to Obama as an “empty suit” and yet he’s the only one willing to talk about actual politics and government issues instead of acting like a childish, schoolyard bully.
And yes, I am calling McCain a child, so you can save time in your town square debates talking about something that actually matters to the world instead of starting another campaign copied from a Mad Libs book.

Obama accused the Mccain campaign of saying they scare people into thinking he doesnt’ look like the guys on dollar bills. Truth or lie? Race card?
so you have some nerve trying to brush off this offensive lipstick comment, when Obama throws up the race card all the time!
And, what about the texas councilmen who were offended when someone used the term black hole?
If you can cry race card, then bring out the gender card, especially when Obama was so blatant about his sexism. what was he possibly thinking saying something like that? Imbecile!

The old adage has been proved true once again. “If the shoe fits, wear it.” Sure are a lot of right wingers trying to fit in those shoes this morning. So many, they’re fighting to get into them. At least Senator Obama gave the neo-con spinmeister’s something to talk about today on their radio and tv talk shows since they can’t seem to talk about policies and issues that are relevant.

Barack Hussein Obama says that he is the most qualified to be President of the USA! But by making this lipstick remark the great community organizer has proven that he has not learned what every school child in America learns before they start to school and that is “Look both ways before you cross the street” But then, he did not start to school in America.
In the past Barack Hussein Obama has jogged down the left side of the street where all the traffic flowed the same way. Now he is out there on a super highway and traffic zooms both ways and he can’t handle it.

‘T.’: “If the remark did not imply Palin, than what is the pig?”
The pig in this case is McCain’s policies. The lipstick is calling those policies ‘change’. Those are what Obama was talking about. Also, he didn’t even mention Palin. Happy now?

Obama accused the McCain campaign of saying they scare people into thinking he doesnt’ look like the guys on dollar bills because THEY ALREADY HAD.
The McCain campaign had previously put out a video morphing Washington into Obama on a dollar bill, as if to show how scary that would be.

Funny how the Conservatives on this board were the same folks attacking Obam during the primary. I hope you keep up those tactics because….Um….Obama WON the Primary all the while the same folks kept using the same attacks that will inevitably provide the same results. Way to go. Debbie – I can’t tell you Obama’s position, but I think age appropriate sex education is important. If children are taught about their bodies then they know better when someone is being inappropriate with their body. By keeping children ignorant it puts them in danger.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
See that’s what is wrong with the issue on Sex Ed & Kids. I’m in no way supporting Obama (he’s a freaking lawyer and that’s the last thing our country needs is another lawyer running the place)… but back to the issue of Sex Ed & Kids, it’s important to teach children that certain parts of their bodies are OFF LIMITS TO ANYONE (including mommy & daddy) and don’t be afraid to tell your teacher, pastor, police if it’s going on.
What happens is media puts a broad statement like SEX ED for KIDS out and we assume their teaching them HOW TO.
Gee folks, it’s been fun but I have got to get back to earning a living and trying to pay taxes so millions on welfare will get next month’s check!
Karen, as a US Senator, the running of the Chicago schools do not fall under Obama’s duty. It didn’t really when he was an Illinois Senator. It is the responsibility of the mayor of the city and the governor of the state. If he had been governor of the state, then you could point to the Chicago schools as a problem he did not address. That being said, Alaska showed a decrease in graduation rates last year…not that it was great before that. Now don’t try to go and say Palin had not been governor long enough to do anything about the graduation rate…because you can’t have the experience but none of the responsibilities.
Every day that McSame/Rove are able to detract attention from themselves is a good day for them. Obama’s right in calling this what it is…phony outrage.
It takes real gall for McSame to play the “sexist” card. This is the man who called his own wife the “c” word and offered to enter her in a topless beauty contest in front of a bunch of bikers. He also used “lipstick on a pig” to describe Hillary Clinton’s health care plan and made a tasteless joke about Chelsea Clinton’s looks.
I’ll believe that he’s concerned about sexism when he supports equal pay for equal work and a woman’s right to choice. Until then, it’s straight b.s.
Obama’s sex ed for young kids is around teaching them about sexual predators and what to do if they do get molested or if someone attempts to molest them. It is not to teach them about sex. It is a fine line, but an important thing to teach kids. We teach them about ‘stranger danger’, but there are dangers from people who are not strangers.
Fair play to Obama for standing up to these idiots. I have yet to read a speech, an article, or a blog, where John McCain or any of his minions have shown the slightest concern either for the American people or for their intelligence.
How many republicans are going vote this year, 40, 50, 60 million? All that bluster, all that hot air, all that pseudo- concern and pseudo-morality, and not a single policy, not a single solid good idea about how to move forward between the whole lot of them.
Given the state they have left the country and the world in I wouldn’t be surprised if Bush and Cheney leave the Oval Office in January zipping up their flies.
I weep for Americans! I wonder why it is difficult for them to see what is ahead. The whole world can see it but the World is getting depressed that
the People that seem to have the longest vision are now groping in darkness.
The intelligence of an average American is being called to questions by all sought of lies that are being pushed into public domain.
The most disheartening of it all is that the recipients of these lies are ignorant of the truth and they are not doing anything to know the truth.
If we bother to read CNN’s Political Ticker, we will see comments of People all over the World to the wrong route the ship of state has taken in the past seven years and what lurks in the dark in the next four years if a wrong choice is made.
President Bush’ s regime has gone down in history as one of the worst administration America has had to grapple with.
He has tried his best but his best has not been enough.
But he needs to write his name back in gold. How can he do this? To bestow on the Country an Administration that would fair much worse that his that would make Critics regret ever disparaging him.
Senator Mccain is a good man but he can not take the US back to the enviable place it was before the current maladministation.
Gov. Sarah Palin, judging from her records in Alaska, is a mother, a Vindictive Politician and a religious dogma.
America is a free society. It was the freedom to choose that got the Country to the state of being a beacon to all lovers of Democracy all over the world.
It was the freedom of choice that led to the Founding Fathers to sign the Independence Charter in 1774.
America is a Democracy and Democracy is synonymous with Choice.
Mccian/Palin Administration would leave you with no choice. They will crimilize your Choice.
Not everybody is an Evangelical. I am Penticostal, you are Methodist, Your Neighbor is Anglican. We have denominational choices.
We are not in Cuba. We are not Communists. We should have the right to chooose.
We should be Pro-Choice. That is one of the pivots on which democracy stands and that is the Pivot on which democracy can survive.
Without trying to sound sexist, we can not leave this decision in the hands of some old Women who are caught in the Palin frenzy because of the novelty of her choice as the Veepee Nominee.
Most of these Women have passed their primes. They have lived their lifes and it is out turn to live ours.
They cannot decide for us, We will decide for them because we have much more at stake that them.
This race is not about race, it is not about sex, it is not a novelty, it is a struggle for the remission of the Soul of the United States of America.
It is about earning and getting back our respect from the Comity of Nations. It is about making this World safer without embarking on unilateral action that tends to alienate our Allies.
It is about revamping our Economy, which is presently comatose. It is about creating Employment by bringing back the Jobs that took flight back into the Country, It is about creating enabling environment for our Children to excel while not abdicating the love of Parents to Schools and the Government.
It is about Issues, it is not about Personality, IT IS ABOUT YOU AND I.
May God grant us Profiting Ears.
Teach them that people are like the weather and you never know when a tonado person is going to strike, but please don’t teach kids stranger danger. It’s part of the problem. The other part of the problem is the UNION OF BAD TEACHERS Obama panders to. It is a parent’s job to teach children about sex. ENOUGH!
Obama said “It was catnip for the media.” Now this is about the McCain response. How does Obama explain the fact that MANY people viewed HIS “catnip” as an insulting insinuation, BEFORE McCains response? Obama calls them like he plays them. This is too dirty. It went from total Pride of the Deocratic Line Up at the beginning of the Primaries, to shameful. Look how far we have come; Hillary received sexist attacks. Obama receives racist attacks on the blogs and radio. The Edwards affair. This is stuff just from the DEM side. What happened? Why is the entire thing in the gutter now? So because some people believe the Republicans play this way; Dems will get into the gutter? Why? Issues are and always have been on the DEM side. This whole race reflects what our society is all about. In the history books, it will represent OUR SOCIAL HISTORY. So far, not good.
On top of the badly used words pig and lipsticks, Obama in fact plagiarized his entire speech segment from a political carton. Obama said:
Gov. Palin was not belittling community organizers. She was only pointing out that mayors, especially small town mayors, are also community organizers who just happen to also have decision making responsibilites.
smith, thank you so much for telling me to think hard about who I am going to vote for in Nov. I don’t know what I would have done without you saying that. You are acting like Obama would have us wearing burkas and walking 12 paces behind our man.
I am going to vote for the person I feel can get us out of this economic mess we are in. That does not have anything to do with gender, but it does have to do with policy. McCain sees nothing wrong with the direction of our economy and stated we are better off than 4 years ago. You have to admit there is a problem before you can solve it. McCain ally Mike Huckabee took Obama’s side on the issue, saying he didn’t think it was a swipe at Palin.
“It’s an old expression, and I’m going to have to cut Obama some slack on that one. I do not think he was referring to Sarah Palin; he didn’t reference her. If you take the two sound bites together, it may sound like it,” he said on Fox’s “Hannity and Colmes.”
EBay got a huge plug Wednesday night when, trying to depict herself as a tight-fisted reformer, GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin said she put an Alaska state jet on eBay.
But the Westwind II jet never sold on eBay.
According to PolitiFact, the plane, bought by her Republican predecessor whom she beat in 2006, was listed for sale three times on the San Jose internet auction giant. But no one ever met the minimum bid. The plane was listed with an asking price of $2.5 million in 2007. The state had paid just under $2.7 million for it in 2005.
Finally, the state turned to an aircraft broker, who sold the jet to an Alaskan businessman for $2.1 million.
“LIPSTICK has been a catch phrase for Palin since her speech at the convention.”
So ANY reference to lipstick is a reference to Palin now? Regardless of whether Palin is mentioned? Regardless of whether it makes sense? Regardless of Obama’s previous usage of the exact same expression long before Palin was even mentioned in this campaign?
That’s stretching. Really, REALLY, stretching.
John McCain’s daughter Meghan is not taking offense to Barack Obama’s “lipstick on a pig” line like the rest of her father’s campaign, pointing out Wednesday morning that GOP presidential nominee has been known to use the phrase.
“I’ve heard my dad say that, the term ‘lipstick on a pig,’” McCain said during an appearance on Fox promoting her new children’s book about her father.
Obama is so presidential. These remarks today remind us that he is intelligent, thoughtful and will be a wonderful statesman when he is president. He does not hide behind an evil political machine, nor does he duck and run. He is his own man, speaks his mind openly, and that must scare McCain more than anything.
And yes, we ARE liberals…we are generous with truth, compassion, and intelligence, and kindness….unlike smallminded conservatives who only want to horde their “stuff” and run through this short life on earth being as mean and greedy as they can be.
Go Obama—you are greatly admired by people who THINK…those of us who will not be TOLD by a political party how to THINK.
Bhrandon–Yeah I know what a saying is. But would Obama have said the lipstick “saying” if Palin hadn’t said it at the convention? NO! and like I said he knew in what context he was making the remark. Yes and highlighting someone running for Potus experience as a community organizer is racist, and the word uppity is racist, and saying LBJ passed the civil rights act not JFK or MLK is racist, and saying Obama’s voting record is a fairy tale is racist, and saying jesse Jackson won SC is racist and just about any time someone legitimately criticises Obama they are racist. In fact if you don’t vote for Obama you are racist, but Obama can obviously and directly referrence Sarah Palin when talking about lipstick on a pig and that’s not sexist. Let’s call a spade a spade here folks, Obama doesn’t support women he uses them. Just look into how he won his seat in the Illinois senate.
Palin will have a second huge bounce after her ABC interview, which can give her a chance to talk about her stories and defeat all those lies out there.
I watched her governors’ debate in 2006. She was really great. The most important thing is that she can talk things in a very intuitive way, unlike those lawyers. I was very impressed with her. she is even better than Hillary in some ways.
Donna,
The Presidency of America is not a child’s play. It is not a joke.
It doesn’t know whether you are a Man or a Woman. All it knows is that a large and complex Country needs to be run and it has to be run well.
All the shout of sexism is not only divisive but ridiculous.
It is fair if Sarah Palin attacks Obama. It is fair if She twists facts to suit her political purposes.
But it is sexist if Obama debunks the falsehood, It is sexism if Obama hits back.
It appears People like you wants the Presidency to be handed to her on a platter of Gold. That would not only be counter-productive, it would be unnecessarily playing to the gallery.
President Medvedev of Russia would see the Presidency and not a Woman if Palin becomes POTUS considering Mccain mortality as a result of his age.
Al-quaeda and the Talibans will not soft-pedal on their attacks on the US Militarymen in Afghanistan because it is a Woman that is POTUS.
The President has no sex. The President is neither Male or Female.
He/She is the President of the United States and he/she has a Strong, massive and complex Country to run.
So you insult that Office and you insult all Women that have achieved by dint of hard work if you expect a free passage for Gov. Mccain because she is Female.
HE is the idiot who lost a day of campaigning on SERIOUS issues when he said this….he knew exactly what he was saying as the crowd cheered and rose to their feet.
And more concerning is why is he campaigning against GOV. PALIN, OUR #2 ON THE TICKET….this appears to be very weak, and he is battling the wrong opponent. That should be Biden’s job, and from where I stand he seems fascinated by “lipstick” too, as he was quoted saying something similar.
Man…..get these guys to the Clinique counter, so they can get over their fascination with LIPSTICK. They are looking like pusses.
GOP=IDIOT, the history books will prove all of you Liberals wrong. With all of the hits that our economy has had these past 7 1/2 years, GDP is still growing. In the first quarter of this year GDP grew 0.9%. The second quarter grew 3.3%. I contend that it was President Bush’s 2001 & 2003 tax cuts that kept us afloat. And had the Democrats allowed his energy policy to pass–back in 2001–energy prices would not be as high as they are today. It is the skyrocketing energy prices that has caused inflation to rise.
Sen. Obama’s plan to add a trillion dollars worth of new entitlements will bankrupt the country. There are roughly 6 million individuals who make over $250,000. Do you honestly believe that these 6 million individuals will be able to finance all of these new entitlements? If elected president, at some point Sen. Obama and the Democrats will come to that realization and will end up raising taxes for the middle class as well.
Of course you can pretend that you never asked for the Money, but all those letters signed by you asking for a bridge to be built because you claimed it was needed to improve transportation in your state will NEVER BE ERASED. Forget the lipstick controversy; it’s a diversion and a “tempest in a teapot.”
While Mr. Obama said, children, families, and faith are off-limits for criticism, he might want to reconsider his moratorium against faith. John McCain made faith an issue by selecting Sarah Palin as his running mate. By picking her, he pandered to women AND evangelicals.
It was the far right-wing evangelicals that enabled Mr. Bush to win, especially his second term, because he dangled their two “absolute” issues: anti gay marriage and anti-abortion in front of them like a carrot. It’s an important connection that links McCain to Bush because it’s the far right-wing “moral absolutistists” who are the people that Karl Rove manipulated and who are primarily responsible for the extreme hatred and political polarization that exists today in America. That means that John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin is in direct conflict with his message of bipartisanship and national healing from the destructive Bush years.
Sarah’s far right-wing views are relevant because she has indicated that they strongly impact her thinking and decision process by calling the destructive Iraq war, based on false pretenses; God’s will (or war). What right thinking person could possibly agree with that?
She has demonstrated that she will attempt to force her “absolute” ideas upon other American’s even if they disagree with her or in spite of the fact that she can’t live up to her own standards.
In the international arena, Mrs. Palin’s combination of inexperience and “absolute” values will lead to unnecessary, dangerous, and deadly brinkmanship with first, second, and third-world leaders and crackpots.
Barack Obama has to gauge the backlash from this strategy, but it can be done, if done carefully.
Knowing the evangelicals as I do, their almost certain rabid outrage to this strategy would probably reveal how radical and distasteful they really are.
The GOP is so blatantly phony that it labels as “sexist” criticisms that aren’t even gender-specific?
Palin’s skin is so thin that she reacts to criticisms that weren’t even directed at her?
How presidential do these people seem to you?
We let them get away with garbage like this in 2000 and 2004.
What do you think of the results?
That doesn’t explain why she took money while she stayed home.
You guys scream about welfare yet here is someone taking taxpayer money for simply staying at home.
I would agree that travel expenses to and from the capital make sense for reimbursement.
But not staying at home.
This is real life. Pseudo maverick rhetorical hype gets real boring after a few speeches…after the canid news channel rubs sugar all over it doesn’t make it any more tasty…its no better here on the ground trying to pay bills.
Thanks to The View (ABC today) they shows clips of A Pig in Lipstick the McCain & Obama had used in years past and that it was McCain who used it first. As I said years ago in conjunction with First Lady Hillary’s Health Care.
The other problem is the media could have done the same thing the View did instead of making this comment the ”lead” story. The media is once again making the news. Shame on all of them.
McBush Whacked,
Here’s a news flash for you: there is no money sitting around in a Social Security account with your name on it. Do you even know how the Social Security system works? On an annual basis all the money that’s confiscated from tax payers is distributed to beneficiaries. It’s called a Ponzi scheme where the newest members of the system pay the oldest. When FDR implemented the system there were 13 payees for every recipient. Now it’s about 3.5 to 1. We can’t last this way much longer. The so-called Trust Fund was liquidated years ago.
The effort to privatize Social Security would have forced the government to give people control over their own money and prevent the government from spending it on entitlement programs. Guess which party didn’t like that idea?
Obama and the audience KNEW full well what his “lipstick on a pig” reference meant. They laughed and cheered him on. He delivered the line… pausing for effect, just like a “comedian” would have.
When Obama is called on the comment, he faked his innocence or justified the comment by saying McCain had did the same thing, to Hillary, when McCain said that about her HEALTH CARE PLAN?
McCain saying that “put lipstick on a pig reference to disagreement with a HEALTH CARE PLAN is quite different than the way Obama meant his comment.
Palin told a JOKE about lipstick and a pitbull and Obama turned it into HIS own joke by calling her a pig with lipstick. Just like he poked fun at her for being a “moose shooter.” I suppose, next, Obama will be saying McCain called Hillary a moose shooter too!
ohiogirl – Obama wasn’t calling Palin a pig. He was talking about an issue and it was an expression he was using (and a lot of other politicians) long before Palin was the VP candidate. Palin called Hillary a whiner for taking offense to such things. I’m a woman, a professional working mom with small children and I didn’t see anything wrong with talking about a bad policy and calling it (the policy) a pig. Times are too tough to dwell on petty issues. What is important to me is that McCain will tax my medical benefits paid by my employer as INCOME. Can you afford that? Do you even know how much that would add to your tax burden? McCain only gives a 3% tax cut (but gives it to everyone even the super rich) and then taxes my medical benefits. I will have to give up insurance or lose my home! A lot of people will. Obama gives a 5% tax cut and leaves my benefits alone. I care about my family & my kids and their future.
Sorry, but we all read the lipstick-pig remarks here and we all had the same reaction: Yikes. I cannot believe he said that.
Palin’s lipstick-pit-bull joke was watched by 40 million, and discussed on every TV network 24/7 for the week preceding Obama’s transparent double entendre. No way was this controversy “made up” by McCain.
Nor is Obama a first offender.
I cite his “sweetie problem”, his references to Hillary’s period, and his allusion to the Jay-Z song “99 Problems” during a primary speech this summer when he symbolically brushed Hillary off his shoulders (to a roaring crowd).
Another thing, I’d like to know exactly when Obama started loving this country? His wife just said a few months ago that, “for the first time in my adult life I am proud to call myself an American”; He use to sit in a racist church that ‘damnned” America and hated white people….correction, hated anyone who isn’t african-american; he just started wearing the flag pin….is he saluting the American flag yet when our National Anthem is playing? I wonder when he started loving this great country……McCain has always loved this country.
John McCain is a “hero” to U.S. taxpayers for his lifetime record of resisting earmarks, while Barack Obama and Joe Biden are “hostile” and “unfriendly,” a government spending watchdog group has concluded.
In its new report, the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste gave the Republican presidential nominee a 100 percent rating for his votes in the Senate last year, and a lifetime score of 88 percent.
By comparison, the nonpartisan, nonprofit group, which is the lobbying arm of Citizens Against Government Waste, assigned Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, 10 percent last year and a lifetime score of 18 percent. Biden, Obama’s running mate, scored 0 percent last year and an overall score of 22 percent.
I will have to give up insurance or lose my home! A lot of people will. Talk about increasing the number of uninsured and foreclosures. Obama gives a 5% tax cut and leaves my benefits alone. I don’t want to lose it, but I will because I can’t afford to take my kids off insurance. You bet I’m scared. They are still running the same old speeches from last week! If you open your ears and listen he has said that taxes will be fairly distributed among those make$250k and above as well as closing the loopholes for the big companies that your boys get payout from! Pay attention!
ohiogirl: I have heard Obama. More importantly, I’ve gone to his website and looked at his policies & I’ve asked hard questions on the tax issues that mean most to me. The FACTS are: under McCain it is an “across-the-board” tax cut of only 3% (even the super rich) and he taxes my medical benefits. Under Obama, income up to $250,000 (and that’s me!) gets a tax cut of 5% and he leaves ALL benefits ALONE. That means I keep my home (that I love and am so proud of) and I keep my insurance (to keep my kids safe and healthy). I’ll teach my kids faith and respect for women and all those other things I also consider REALLY important – that is something I can control. But I can’t control taxes except by my vote. I would only ask that you don’t just listen to the soundbites on TV. Go to the website, ask the hard questions and find out from your HR person just how much those premiums are that McCain will now tax as your income.
The audience got the reference immediately and Obama followed it up with comments about Pallin being new (even though she has been an elected official longer than he has). Obama should take responsibility for what he said and apologize but I doubt he has the class to do that. If you think it was fine what he said do you think it would be ok if McCain said you can take the turban off and put on a suit but it doesn’t make him Presidential?
Oh, I’m paying attention and no, I am not a troll. I am simply looking at this from a realistic point of view. Just how many people do you think actually make $250,000 or more a year? I personally don’t know anyone. Do you honestly believe that your wallet won’t be touched IF Obama wins? Seriously, everyone keeps complaining about the poor shape the economy is in, so how many people can possibly be making over $250,000? Wake Up people!
As for focusing on the issues, I think we can all blame the media on distracting people away from the real issues. Probably because they know that their boy Obama can’t possibly carry through with what he’s promising.
Mary, I hope you are merely an Obama supporter pushing the talking points of the day– health care is not the subject of Tapper’s article here but you have posted on that topic under here a great deal. If you are truly the person you represent yourself to be, I feel for you and hope that your situation improves. I can tell you, however, that from what I understand of the health insurance proposals of both candidates, you need not fear “losing my insurance or my home” under McCain. For openers, his plan includes a tax credit to offset insurance costs, so your health insurance costs will NOT go up as you state. Also, he is committed to ideas like portability, which are very important for low-income workers.
The tone of your posts sounds like the tired old “republicans will take your social security” that has been used for decades to try to scare old people at election time. It gets pulled out every four years and the oldsters are not without SS yet. Now we’re scaring younger voters as well, with this terrible “republicans will take away your health insurance”? Don’t do that. Both men have plans that include safeguards to protect low-income workers, or so they claim. I take them at their word and do not think either plan would result in people like you winding up uninsured and financially ruined.
I do have my own opinions about the health care issue, and I am far more concerned about the details of Obama’s plans than of McCain’s. Government-run, government-mandated health care does not inspire me– think Medicare and Medicaid. I think it would be an expensive, unworkable, bureaucratic nightmare. I prefer McCain’s market-based plan.
Oh, and in the interest of full disclosure, I am a small business owner, so I pay for my own health care. I am far from rich, but Obama seems to think I’m wealthy. I plan to vote for McCain.
And for those of you who keep insisting that all McCain fans are uneducated fools, I have a doctorate.
A substantial shift in the vote preference among independents has given John McCain a slim lead over Barack Obama after the Republican convention. Independents now break for McCain by 15 percentage points (46 percent to 31 percent) in a FOX News poll released Wednesday.
Last month, Obama had a one-point edge among independents (August 19-20, 2008).
Overall, McCain leads Obama by 45 percent to 42.
And yes, I do like Fox News. Afterall, most of the media are clearly biased for Obama.
Ryan C, do you know what the Alaska state law allows regarding travel expenses for its government officals? It may well be the case that the governor and the state legislators receive the per diems whether they return to their homes or not. So before you and the others condemn or even accuse Gov. Palin of doing something illegal or unethical, you may want to verify what the Alaska law allows.
P Diddy’s So 2006, you wrote: “He was merely referring to Republicans dressing up their failed policies to make them look new and improved.”
Then why did the audience erupt with laughter? Whether Sen. Obama was referring to Gov. Palin or not is actually immaterial. It’s whether his audience perceived that he was referring to Gov. Palin. And the eruption of laughter clearly indicates that his audience DID believe he was referring to Gov. Palin.
With its latest ad, released Sept. 10, the McCain-Palin campaign has altered our message in a fashion we consider less than honest. The ad strives to convey the message that FactCheck said “completely false” attacks on Gov. Sarah Palin had come from Sen. Barack Obama. We said no such thing. We have yet to dispute any claim from the Obama campaign about Palin.
They call the ad “Fact Check.” It says “the attacks on Gov. Palin have been called ‘completely false’ … ‘misleading.’ ” On screen is a still photo of a grim-faced Obama. Our words are accurately quoted, but they had nothing to do with Obama.
Our article, posted two days earlier, debunked a number of false or misleading claims that have circulated in chain e-mails and Internet postings regarding Palin. There is no evidence that the Obama campaign is behind any of the wild accusations that we critiqued. There is no more basis for attributing these viral attacks to the Obama campaign than there is for blaming the McCain campaign for chain e-mail attacks falsely claiming that Obama is a Muslim, or a “racist,” or that he is proposing to tax water. The anti-Palin messages, have every appearance of being home-grown.
I will say this as clearly as a I can:
Senator McCain is deliberately lying to the American public in order to further his own campaign. Senator McCain is a liar and should be called on it.
His latest ad implying Obama is a child molester is beyond despicable, especially because the bill in question was meant to protect children from predators. It makes me sick as an American. Senator McCain should immediately apologize for lying to the American people.
ohiogirl: it’s hard for me to understand your position. You agree that there are few people in that $250,000+ category. But those people have a LOT of money – most of the money in America. So, do the math. Obama taxes those people, who have the money to give & he closes corporate loopholes and goes after giant corporations that send jobs overseas. He gives people like me, struggling well under that number with kids and a mortgage, a tax cut of 5%. That’s how he pays for things. McCain pays for it by taxing my medical benefits like income – something I CAN’T afford to pay and keep my home. He does that because he also wants to give tax cuts to the super rich and keep the corporate tax loopholes in place. I know you are paying attention but I don’t know how much investigating you are doing. I don’t think you are a troll and I think name calling is not helpful to either side. It just clouds the issues. But tell me based on an issue like these taxes – why do you think McCain putting more of a burden on people like me will help. I’m not rich & I don’t blame the government either. I just work hard to provide the best for my family. I just need government not to saddle me with more burden (like taxing my benefits). I need them to leave that alone – and McCain doesn’t. Because (just like Obama) he has to pay for things somehow and he is unwilling to go after the wealthy and the giant multi-national corporations to do it.
Kate,
I’m not Ohiogirl, but I can respond to your query as I am a McCain supporter as well who appreciates his tax policy and prefers it to that of Obama. First of all, I have to defend those making 250,000+ because I am one. I am a small business owner, whose income is in that range because I’m a partnership, not a corporation, and thus the income of my company flows through to my personal income tax. You say that “those people have a LOT of money – most of the money in America. So, do the math.” Well, they also already pay MOST of the taxes in America– the top 5% of income earners pay 60% of the taxes, and 40% of American workers pay no income taxes at all or get an earned income credit. I fall in that top 5%, which is a huge surprise to me given my personal circumstances which are far from what people think of when they think “wealthy.” I paid over 25% of my income in taxes last year. I did so gladly but would appreciate relief like anyone else. If Obama goes ahead and saddles all the increased tax burden on my income group, he will, it seems to me, damage small business and slow economic growth even further. My company currently has one outside employee and would like to add another in the near future. We have held off waiting to see what happens after the election. With higher taxes, we would not be able to expand.
You went on to write,”Obama taxes those people, who have the money to give & he closes corporate loopholes and goes after giant corporations that send jobs overseas. He gives people like me, struggling well under that number with kids and a mortgage, a tax cut of 5%.”
Closing corporate loopholes? Now there’s an idea no one’s tried before. Yes, that’s sarcasm. I don’t hold out much hope for that being a significant income source. And the tax rates of corporations is already among the world’s highest. I see nothing in his plan that would result in increased federal income from corporations overall.
Finally, you say,” That’s how he pays for things. McCain pays for it by taxing my medical benefits like income – something I CAN’T afford to pay and keep my home. He does that because he also wants to give tax cuts to the super rich and keep the corporate tax loopholes in place.” Yikes, where to begin. First of all, Obama himself makes clear that his tax plans will not offset all the increased government spending he proposes, even with his own generous estimates of the cost of his health care plan. He does not even pretend to try to bring the deficit back in line.
Secondly, McCain has tax credits that will offset the “taxing my health benefits as income” problem. I notice that several of you folks with plain names are focusing on the same talking points– you and Mary seem to both push the claim that taxing benefits will drive you homeless. I have my doubts. McCain’s tax plan is intended to stimulate economic growth– we will have to agree to disagree about which plan is the more effective way forward, since my understanding of the issue, which I have followed very closely, is that the McCain plan is superior for the nation as a whole. And I do not interpret the moves that this long-time reformer and original MAVERICK, John McCain, plans as keeping corporate loopholes in place. I’d like to have some examples, please. It smells like that line about “tax breaks for oil companies”– McCain wants to cut corporate tax rates, gigantic oil companies would get the cut just like every other corporation, because of their size and the amount of taxes they pay, the dollar amount of their tax savings would be large, but that is not the same thing as singling out those companies for particular favors, as the Democrats are implying with their language.
Maryann, but where is McCain going to get the money to fund the war that he does not intend to end. Both McCain and Obama have said they will cut programs that aren’t working. But where else can McCain cut (when he has a war to wage). More education cuts? Our schools are already struggling and I certainly can’t afford private school. I sure won’t be able to afford it if McCain taxes my medical benefits, too. At least Obama isn’t promising to saddle me with more burden but is putting that burden on people who can afford it. Can you just ignore McCain’s policy that will tax your medical benefits? Then you are clearly far better off than me and most other Americans. But doesn’t Christ call us to help those in need and not ignore the pleas of the wounded? Isn’t that what the story of the Good Samaritan is all about? And in that vein, perhaps those blessed with such great wealth should think about us hard working folks that are just as decent and patriotic and loving of our families.
Take a look at the tax code. We’re all taxed according to our income with those making less paying fewer (or no) taxes, and those making more paying more taxes. There’s also a tipping point where further taxes slow growth and job creation which helps no one.
There is no reasoning with those who are voting for a handout from Obama. You’re falling for pie in the sky, because there’s no way a tax on the wealthiest of us will pay for it all. It will either become a tax on the middle class as well, or our national debt will continue to balloon even further which drags everyone down for generations to come.
On the war – Obama has consistently said that ending Iraq would give us 10 billion a month to spend. An out-and-out lie since the entire cost of the war is on a credit card that our grandchildren are apparently expected to pay. Plus, after his Berlin Blitzkrieg, Obama said he’d get out of Iraq, expand troops in Afghanistan, and invade Pakistan. That elusive 10 billion slips further away…
Kate, I understand your concerns, but fear you are being mislead. Do you think that there are enough people making $250,000+ a year to be able to afford the 5% tax cut he says he is going to give to the rest of America? I think there are far more people than that 5% tax cut is going to be able to cover. As the poster called “moderate” posted today at 3:22, I am also under the understanding that McCain’s plan offer’s a tax credit to offset insurance costs. I also do not think it’s fair to tax some of the people in our country but give cuts to others. Those people making $250+ already pay so much in taxes anyway, is it fair to just make them pay more? (I know some of you think that they can afford it, so why not?) The more we earn, the more we pay in taxes.
If anything, it was good discussing real issues for a change. I wish you well.
The Laffer curve was laughed out of economy schools post Reagan.
Clinton raised taxes, job creation is at some of the highest levels in the 20th century.
Bush cut taxes. Job creation may end up breaking even by the time his term is done and his 1st term was the 1st to see a net job loss during a Repsidential term since Hoover.
Moderate: I appreciate your response because it isn’t name calling. I’m not a campaign worker or any kind of paid blogger. (And I can only do this on my lunch hour and breaks). But I would respond to some of your points as follows:
1. You have doubts that taxing my benefits will drive me homeless. You don’t know my situtation but it is definitely real. I live paycheck-to-paycheck and just barely cover my mortgage, medical co-pays & deductibles etc, groceries, gas, stuff for my children’s school – and prices going up every day. Any increase will make me go under & that medical benefit is a HUGE lifeline. But you say: “McCain has tax credits that will offset the “taxing my health benefits as income” problem.” His tax credit is a mere $5000 per FAMILY for the year. I get that if I opt out of the insurance plan. That won’t even cover 3 months of insurance premiums. How will I make do the rest of the year or should I just tell my kids to get sick or injured on a timetable?
2. I am delighted you make more than $250,000 per year & understand wanting to keep your money. You only have 1 outside employee – do you pay for medical benefits. If you do, under McCain you will lose that as a tax write-off because now that is considered income to that employee & the employee will pay it. Have you asked your employee how they feel about it?
3. Your number is slightly misleading in saying the rich pay 60% of the taxes. They don’t pay a 60% rate, they pay 60% of all American taxes but they control a LOT more than 60% of the money. Under Obama the increase would go from 36 to 39 percent (just like during the Clinton era when people weren’t exactly going broke) – but you didn’t even pay the current rate because you obviously have a lot of credits/offsets that brought it all the way down to 25%. That’s less than what I pay because I’m just a working stiff.
3. Even McCain can’t do anything about the deficit Bush ran up. And certainly without an end to the war, that deficit will rise faster with McCain than Obama. That war is a money pit. At least Obama wants to spend the money in America and not overseas.
4. Example of McCain’s refusal to considering taxing big corps – his refusal to consider a windfall profit tax on the oil industry. An industry making record profits by the way.
5. I have to question your logic that the increase in income tax will be so detrimental to your business that you wont’ be able to hire someone else. The income tax is for pure profit, not for money put back into a business. And if people like me aren’t taxed on our medical benefits and have more money to spend (under the Obama plan), then we will put more money into businesses like yours. That’s a free market. The other is the same old “trickle down” economic theory that has utterly failed over the past 8 years.
So, in the end, neither candidate will be able to pay for everything based on current taxes or with the proposed tax cuts. But Obama wants to spend the money in America. McCain wants to spend it on the war overseas. And Obama sees the economy helped through the “bottom up” approach by giving people like me, the hard working class, more money to spend on local businesses like yours. You still think the trickle down approach is best, even though it has failed over the past 8 years. Perhaps it’s just whether you see the situation from below $250,000 or from above it. The view just looks different from down here.
Well, I think that puts the policies in perspective without the name-calling or rancor. And now the people will decide. Hopefully, they will decide on these issues and not the petty drama.
Marylou, I kind of resent the accusation that I’m looking for a handout from Obama. I’m just looking to avoid having the government ask for even more of me. Yes, the wealthy pay taxes, but they also have the ability to utilize a lot of tax shelters and exemptions (i.e. an unlimited Health Savings Account to put money into tax free to cover medical expenses their insurance doesn’t cover) that I don’t have the extra money to pay for. As Jimmy Stewart once said, “Just remember this, Mr. Potter: that this rabble you’re talking about, they do most of the working and paying and living and dying in this community. Well, is it too much to have them work and pay and live and die in a couple of decent rooms and a bath?” And as I might say, is it too much to not tax their medical benefits that they rely on to keep their families safe and healthy. As was noted in an earlier post, Clinton did the same tax increase and job creation sky-rocketed. And I, for one, don’t want to saddle my grandchildren with a war debt that my vote helped increase.
Those comparing Obama’s tax plan to Bill Clinton’s need to have some perspective -
Bill Clinton had the benefit of being President as the huge dot.com was rising. Bush had the misfortune of coming into office as that bubble was bursting.
There is no dot.com bubble now to ride with increased taxes. And Obama’s tax increases are much more than Clinton’s were.
I’m self-employed and I repeat: I have no incentive to grow my business under Obama. I’m one of those people who actually has to work hard for every dollar I make; if taxes are just going to take it anyway, I’ll kick back and take it easy.
Posted by: marylou | September 11, 2008, 9:47 am 9:47 am
Marylou, you’re assertion about Obama’s taxes is false. He raises the EXACT amount that Clinton did – on the wealthy from 36 to 39%. And the reality is that none of those folks will actually pay that full amount because they have lots of disposable income to put into tax shelter devices (like the unlimited Health Savings Account, education savings accounts etc). Poor working stiffs like me can’t afford to do that. So we are the ones who really need the tax relief. Obama believes in the bottom up approach – give people like me in the working class more money and we’ll spend it on business like yours. You still believe in the failed trickle down policy. Hmmm.
By calling Govenor Palin,” lipstick on a pig” obama demonstrates exactly what kind of primitive animal he is, when he is threatened and cornered.
Now that McCain is ahead in the race,
obama is showing his true colours, and has let his stoney exterior SLIP, to reveal a low and common uneducated persona, like the primitive APEMAN.
NO GENTLEMAN would ever call a parent with a Down Syndrome Child a lipstick on a pig, just because they are now stealing his thunder.
John McCain is a gentleman, even if he does hate obama’s guts, would never resort to such base and crude language.
As an immigrant to this country who left the tired socialist policies of tax and spend I loathe to see the same haters of America want to change it to a “socialist paradise.” We are in paradise in part because we are given the opportunity to keep the product of our labors but also because it is up to the self reliant and the brave to do the rest. You have to be pretty stupid and lazy if you cant make it in America. No one gives it to you in a platter, but they also dont try to impede you in this system (mixed economy that it is though).
Those who support Obama (except for the guilt-ridden filthy rich like financial manipulators George Soros and Hollywood make believe parrots that actors are) simply are not self-reliant individuals, unlike the earlier pioneers of this ocuntry. They are hangers on who expect others/government to take care of them. Free school, free medical, free lunch. They blame their lot on the “rich” (and that includes anyone making more than $50,000 a year). This is the basic theme of the Democrats. Work on the envy and jealousy principles of others and you will get enough votes. They love to pit class against class and work the envy angle. . There are millions of Americans more qualified to be President than Obama. He has no qualifications other than being black and hating America. He was elected by the corrupt Chicago political machine, known to produce 1 million of dead voters (surprisingly all Democratic) at every election.
Democratic party is the “gimme” party. It is NOT the party of America and self reliance. It was not the party of MLK. It is officially the party of little people and the down trodden. But they want you to remain little for ever so you keep voting for the Dem bosses.
Lets vote for McCain and Palin. It is the reaonable thing to do, for self preservation, lower taxes, energy self-sufficiency and control of who comes here. Both are highly principled people. I cant say that about Osama. They have a record of voting. Obama disguised his voting to just “Present.” Is that someone we want to elect that has no known record? Are the American people going to be fooled by the elite left wing press corps? McCain willbe elected IN SPITE OF the press. It is quite an achievement.
I dont think Mc Cain is a conservative with the courage of a Reagan who was the first American President to actively oppose the Soviet Union and force it collapse but he will come close. He was once considered as a possibel runnign made for John Kerry don’t forget.
He and Sarah Palin are all America has got if it wishes to remain free and American.
Love America or leave it in the hands of Obama. The choice is simple if you are self-reliant.
Palin had no idea what the Bush Doctrine was – the central and most controversial foreign policy innovation of the past eight years: the doctrine of preemption against states with WMDs. Moreover, in her speech the same day, she described the war in Iraq. She said her eldest son, who has just enlisted, would “defend the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans”.
