LIVE DEBATE BLOG

9:41pm CT: And that’s a wrap.  The first debate is in the history books and that means the spin can begin.  We’ll see you back here next Thursday, Oct. 2 for the Biden-Palin vice presidential showdown and then again on Oct. 7 and 15 for the final two presidential debates.  In the mean time, check out all the latest in The Note every morning and keep the conversation going.  G’night from Oxford.

9:32 pm CT: It may just be me but I feel like Obama is getting his best shots in very late — one of the key parts of his appeal has to be the different tone he would set with the world. I think he would have been well-served to be talking like this about 50 minutes ago.

9:29 pm CT: Obama pledges to "restore America’s standing in the world." A critical part of the message — and it only took 89 minutes to get to it. A missed opportunity?

9:26 pm CT: Watch a GOP talking point get made! This is Barack Obama, saying John McCain is right.

9:24 pm CT: Republicans are in full drill, baby, drill mode — but does McCain want to "exploit" oil reserves?

9:20 pm CT: Meaty discussion on Russia — with lots and lots of Russian names for McCain to pronounce. IF people care about this, McCain looks strong.

9:15 pm CT: I’ve got to think the McCain campaign is happy with what this debate has and hasn’t covered. I don’t know if he was better prepared, or just jumped at more opportunities, but he’s hitting the pitches to the right parts of the field.

9:12 pm CT: McCain: "I’m not going to set the White House visitors’ schedule before I’m president of the United States."

This is another area where McCain is in his comfort zone. He’s having a long discussion on the preconditions line.

9:10 pm CT: From ABC’s Bret Hovell, who covers McCain: He may have missed Ahmadinejad, but he got that string of 5 or 6 russian words right on.

9:08 pm CT: You knew this was coming — a blistering attack on the preconditions line Obama has long wished he never delivered. This is a McCain layup. But he mentioned Kissinger — whom, Obama accurately quotes, says the US should meet with Iranian leadership without preconditions.

9:04 pm CT: ABC’s Sunlen Miller has some details on the bracelet: It was given to him on 2/15 in Greenbay by Tracy Jopek of Merrill, Wisconsin. He’s worn it every day since. The bracelet says her son’s name, Sgt Ryan David.

9:03 pm CT: From ABC’s John Berman: Remember the line from the convention: "If John McCain wants to have a debate about who has the temperament, and judgment, to serve as the next Commander-in-Chief, that’s a debate I’m ready to have."

That is the debate that they are having on foreign policy…and Obama is getting in his licks.

9:02 pm CT: First flash of meanness from McCain, to me — when he heads up subcommittees, they do things…

8:59 pm CT: A few times tonight, McCain has slowed things down to tell a personal story. Surely rehearsed, but it doesn’t come off that way — breaks through in a debate that features long lists of talking points. (Obama liked the last story so much he offered up one of his own: "I’ve got a bracelet, too.")

8:57 pm CT: "That business about bombing Iran . . . " McCain says. And his first Reagan reference is about a break with Reagan.

Oddly, tonight John McCain seemed marginally better on the economic issues, while Barack Obama has been a little stronger on foreign policy/national security.

8:53 pm CT: McCain talking diplomacy, Obama talking military force. Hmmm…

8:51 pm CT: So far — I’m left flat. I wonder if the fasct that they’ve been otherwise occupied has had a big impact on preparations.

8:49 pm CT: Obama talks tough: "Capture and kill bin Laden and crush al Qaeda."

8:45 pm CT: It took Obama halfway through the debate to find a groove. "You were wrong," was his refrain, repeated several times. Yet McCain had a good rejoinder: "We are winning."

8:40 pm CT: "We will win in Iraq," McCain says (finally, on foreign policy). Notice he makes the question about the success of the surge. Obama in his comfort zone too — shouldn’t have gone in in the first place. "Sen. McCain and President Bush had a very different judgment," Obama said. "We took our eye off the ball."

It’s taking him a while to marry McCain and Bush — but he’s getting there.

8:38 pm CT: "Your president," Obama says, presided over this "orgy of spending." McCain says AGAIN that he was not Miss Congeniality. (Scary that he might have been.) But can’t he limit the lame jokes to once each per debate?

8:36 pm CT: That’s pretty close to an outright lie by Sen. McCain — saying he wants to hand over healthcare to the federal government. (Also, as a colleague notes, why is he suddenly in favor of handing over the economy to the federal government?)

8:33 pm CT:  A third of the way into this debate, Barack Obama is the first to mention a foreign policy subject, in the context of saying he wants to save money by ending the Iraq war.

I like that Lehrer is hammering this point about being realistic about the financial crisis. But time is ticking on this debate.

8:32 pm CT: From ABC’s David Chalian: It seems to me there is a clear attempt on McCain’s part to use his contrast or anti-Obama moments to paint him as an entirely typical politician willing to put politics ahead of principles.

8:30 pm CT: Obama: "I’m not willing to give up the need to do it, but there may be individual components that we cannot do."

8:28 pm CT: Asked what he’d give up, Barack Obama told us what he’d do. What wouldn’t he do? "Eliminate programs that don’t work." Some more specifics, at least, from McCain — he likes to cite spending horror stories.

8:24 pm CT: Next up the energy bill. McCain, again, on the offensive. (And still nothing on foreign policy.)

8:22 pm CT: Obama delivered a good answer on taxes — touting his tax cut — but I don’t think the country is going to get angry that we have low business taxes. Then he accuses McCain of wanting to raise taxes — by taxing health benefits. "It is not a good deal for the American people, but it’s an example of the [notion] that the market can do everything."

8:21 pm CT: STILL on earmarks. "Senator Obama is a recent convert," McCain says.

8:20 pm CT: Guess who’s wearing a flag pin tonight — Barack Obama. Not John McCain.

8:19 pm CT: Don’t look now — but John McCain is dominating the discussion on economic policy. He has steered it toward ground that’s comfortable for him. Very early on, I’m seeing McCain in a groove.

8:17 pm CT: "Evils" of earmarking, McCain says. (Has he seen the Thad Cochran Research Center that’s a few hundred feet from here?)

New attack — nearly $1 million in earmark requests per day from Obama since he’s been in the Senate.

Obama can’t be comfortable defending earmarks here — though of course he would never (NEVER!) be influenced by a special interest . . . So he turns it to taxes — some engagement on economic policy.

And we’re 17 minutes into the debate on foreign policy without a single word uttered on foreign policy.

8:13 pm CT: From ABC’s Sunlen Miller: It only took Obama 1 min and 44 seconds from the start of his first answer to hit McCain

"We have to recognize that this is a final verdict on 8 years of failed economic policies of Gorge bush, supported by Sen Mccain."

8:12 pm CT: Obama: "John, you said 10 days ago that the fundamentals of the economy are strong." There’s that word again. . .

8:08 pm CT: Thanks to Jim Lehrer for pointing out that the question wasn’t answered.

Obama so far is more aggressive than McCain — maybe it’s the topic, but I’m struck early by how McCain is playing optimistic — I thought he was the populist on the trail of late.

McCain said "sure" he’s going to vote for the plan — did he mean to say that?

8:06 pm CT: An odd comment on Kennedy from Sen. McCain — he’s actually out of the hospital, unless he has better information than we do.

Then — an optimistic tone on the economic crisis — that’s an eyebrow-raiser. But it fits in with McCain’s argument that he helped along the package that’s working its way toward a vote on the Hill. "I went back to Washington," he says.

8:04 pm CT: Sen. Obama gets the first question — a direct one, on the financial bailout project. And he ticks off his principles, in a solid recitation. Also, chalk up the first hit on the Bush administration. (Plus the word "fundamentals" — a coded tweak at Sen. McCain.

As a democrat-leaning person, why is it that McCain seems to me so much more real a person in this debate, less smug, less preachy, less obnoxious than Obama, and so much more spontaneous? Whatever one feels about content, he is much better at debating!

Posted by: Anne in MA | September 26, 2008, 9:47 pm 9:47 pm

Why is that McCain constantly keeps going back to his stump speech, word for word? Can’t he come up with anything new to say besides what we see over and over. I would think the president should be able to think on his feet.

McCain should not be so weird. He should be able to do better than this after 26 years of being a reformer, a maverick and and in the senate. Hey guys is it me or should we all be afraid of a McCain/Palin administration.

I like the freewheeling nature of this debate. It does favor McCain; Obama gives lectures. I wish Obama would stop quoting himself “as I have said” over and over. Strangely, McCain is sounding like the moderate! What gives?

Posted by: Anne in MA | September 26, 2008, 9:54 pm 9:54 pm

Can I just make a controversial comment. listen to how Obama just said Pakistan and Taliban. Listen closely he says he’s never been Muslin. Wasn’t raised Muslim. ???? Listen to the accent on those words. I don’t care and think its fine if he was raised Muslim, but no American not raised Muslim would have pronounced those two words that way.

Obama is a commanding presence, he’s calm, cool and collected. He’s absolutely right that we have to stop with the cowboy mentality that McCain would just perpetuate. Aren’t we all sick of politicians who never think thru the consequences of their actions.
I’ll always remember McCain saying it’s irrelevant to question how we got to Iraq. Why should I trust a guy with that kind of attitude to not be a little boy with big war game plans somewhere else? Loser.

I don’t think Obama has earned McCain’s respect to deserve a look his way. In the end, it seems to be working in McCain’s favor by obviously perturbing Obama, who is over there sneering and trying to interrupt by waving his hand around. BTW, I am totally a neutral party going into this, considering a write-in vote b/c neither is all that wonderful. but…. McCain seems to know his stuff and not be so defensive about things…

I’m sure McCain is a fine senator, I still don’t see any reason why he should advance further. Frankly I would rather elect the smart guy.
McCain is older and his interests are foreign affairs not the economy as he has himself explained. We need someone with greater mental powers to work thru the financial mess – boots on the ground aren’t going to solve our government’s infrastructure, healthcare, education problems.
I’m not sure why people don’t see that failing to invest in your own people dooms – dims our future.
I’m voting for Obama for our kids – so they can have something there when they grow up. This endless bending over backwards for corporate america re: tax breaks, this bailout, and the riches defense firsts are making in George Bush’s war games are just ridiculous. Borrowing billions to give Georgia is stupid…
McCain ought to admit his mistake in prodding the Georgian president to attack the breakaway provinces.

Listen to Ron Paul. You can’t solve inflationary woes by creating more money out of thin air. If Bush wants to help, he should realize the billions he is spending on war is not helping. Ask Bush to tighten his belt by recalling troops from around the world. Create a military stand down more extensive then that on 9-11. Since we have more oil in the Anwar then Saudi Arabia, drill the Anwar and increase the flow from there immediately to reduce our need to buy foreign oil. All Bush policies are created to keep the price of oil and gas high. Bush doesn’t have a very good track record on protecting us or solving our problems, rather he creates problems and then offers the taxpayers solutions that make him money, but cost us lives and money. Vote no on the rich man bailout.

I am working with Mr. Phil Gram, lobbyist for UBS, who will be my replacement as Ministry of the Treasury in January. As a Senator, you may know him as the leader of the American banking deregulation movement in the 1990s. This transactin is 100% safe.
This is a matter of great urgency. We need a blank check. We need the funds as quickly as possible. We cannot directly transfer these funds in the names of our close friends because we are constantly under surveillance. My family lawyer advised me that I should look for a reliable and trustworthy person who will act as a next of kin so the funds can be transferred.
Please reply with all of your bank account, IRA and college fund account numbers and those of your children and grandchildren to wallstreetbailout@treasury.gov so that we may transfer your commission for this transaction. After I receive that information, I will respond with detailed information about safeguards that will be used to protect the funds.

First I wont to say good evening and the debate was pretty good . On sen. Obama’s end I myself being retired form the us army. can say from having been to other parts of the world. 1. is that even if there wasn’t a war or conflict going on. americans are disliked and at most times are treated like trash. but they come to our country and are treated like royalty. as for the war in Iraqc we had no business being there in the first palce. and I blame BUSH for this or that major blunder. first of all it wasn’t irac that attacked us. I can’t say if they had something to do with it but the fact is bush caught us at a very emotional moment and seized the opertunity for his own personal gain. this is my opinon as for macain he is just another bush puppet in order to further his agenda.2. as for the bailout of the banks this has been going on for as long as I can remember. but if they come to an agreement I think that the burden should not be on wall street and not on the middle and lower class’s after all greed will catch up to you eventualy. all of them failed to understand that god sits high and looks low he sees all things. as for the oil crises yes we need to find other alternatives but not at the cost of the people.

By the way… Has anyone considered that Jim Lehrer BIASED the viewpoints of the public (and media I see in watching the post-debate analysis on ABC) by making such a big deal out of the “look at each other”. If he hadn’t done that, more than likely, it would not be such a huge point now. Personally, I don’t care if they look at each other or not. This wasn’t a true debate anyway, just an open-format interview.
Also, I know that McCain always talks about his military experience… Umm… why is that so bad? Obama has… what, NONE?
In the end, McCain just has more overall experience. Obama is just too “new” to win my vote (not that McCain [UGH PALIN!]) has got me won, but Obama is simply just too friggin elitist.

McCain never questioned Obama’s not wearing, or wearing a flag pin, so that’s a weak argument, his not wearing one.
I think they both did very well. They both got their points acrossed, and they both sparred nicely, yet made their points. I did notice a few times Obama trying to interrupt on McCains rebuttals, but that’s not a biggie.
Overall, a great debate. These gentlemen didn’t act ugly toward each other, and kept it respectful. Maybe it’s time we followed that.

First of all Kissinger never said that the President of the US should meet wihout preconditions with a foreign head od state. What he did say was that meetings should take place at a lower level without preconditions. This is quite a bit different than our novice, Mr. Obama. Secondly, I am quite sick and tired of hearing Bill Clintons mouthpiece, George Stephanopoulos gushing over the wonderful job that his cantidate did in the debates. I thought that McCain had control pretty much throughout.

Obama kicked Mccain and got under his very old and thin skin. You could tell McCain let Obama get to him and ended up coming off badly and nasty.
And mccain made a huge gaffe in saying Pakistan was a failed state. It was not. It was Afghanistan. Oops, John.

What use is experience when he has not managed to change anything over the last 26 years, voted with McBush over 90% of the time over the last 8 years?? What is the point of saying he is a maverick when you really look into the above, and realize that he would say anything now to get your vote, regardless of the above. Further, what use is experience when McCAin has made poor and wrong judgment over so many main issues? Like picking a totally unqualified VP, for instance. Not understanding the economy especially during this time of crisis, should be the ONE AND ONLY reason to NOT even think of supporting the McCain ticket, regardless of how he is changing his words now.

So, does that mean that Obama is qualified? That’s really my only point. Just because McCain might not seem the right candidate, doesn’t make Obama the right one either… ;)

Posted by: blankstare | September 26, 2008, 11:10 pm 11:10 pm

This debate was supposed to be about foriegn policy. Apparently Obama wasn’t prepared to talk about foriegn policy because he kept trying to steer the debate back to economy(which he wasn’t very clear about either) John McCain was very articulate and informed about other nations and their leaders. Obama didn’t seem to know much therefore he made only general comments, and didn’t use specifics like McCain did.

Posted by: Craig Hill | September 26, 2008, 11:11 pm 11:11 pm

Obama only interrupted McCain because McCain was twisting words and Obama wanted to get it RIGHT!.

Posted by: Michael q | September 26, 2008, 11:11 pm 11:11 pm

I think McCain won. There is something comforting about a leader who has actually visited these trouble spots many times and who has met several leaders. Unfortunately this country is infatuated with Obmba largely with this media coverage which seems overwhelmingly favoring Obama after the debate. This country’s journalists have lost most of the objectivity. They have chosen sides and just keep pushing their agenda. A real disservice to the public.

– Also, I know that McCain always talks about his military experience… Umm… why is that so bad? –
I believe it hurts him, given that Americans are pretty much fed up with Iraq and want the whole debacle over with. With him harping on his Military experience and the problems in Iran and other places, some feel that he would be more willing to get us into another war, while Obama has time and time again stressed diplomacy and dialog over military force except when absolutely necessary. John should stop pulling the POW and Military card and concentrate on what he would do, not what he has done.

McCain lost this debate because he needed a clear win to even get back in the race. Both of them had a few decent points on some issues, Obama manged to stay away from straight stump speech crap and McCain repeated a lot of the junk people are tired of.
Neither of them hit a homerun and McCain needed one to even look credible after the last couple of weeks of flip flopping and critical mistakes.

What? Obama continued to give specifics while McCain kept making opaque statements about how they are going to do whats right and protect American people. Case in point was where Obama gave 4 specific issues about the bailout, and McCain didn’t even really address what he would do but ‘protect americans’ on ‘Main Street’.

I think John McCain deserves the respect to be called Senator MCCain instead of John. But this is how disrespectful Barack Obama is. He went and fought for his country. The youth these days sees that as a bad thing. When you are willing to die for your country that is a true leader.

I think if the media were fair to the candidates, then voters would be fair in their judgment.
And BOTH candidates seemed comfortable on stage, they just handle being in the public eye differently (an example of being fair to the candidates). Obama is more aggressive, McCain is more laid back. Both ways work well; The media needs to BE FAIR. Don’t pick a side; Encourage the audience to choose for themselves, to go online and out into the world to find their own information, to become involved citizens. Please, Media, rethink how you’re going about things. If you’re going to put down one, put down the other. Each candidate has good qualities and bad, just like every other human being on this planet.

Posted by: Pam Storts | September 26, 2008, 11:23 pm 11:23 pm

And the winner is: Obama.
CBS News and Knowledge Networks conducted a nationally representative poll of approximately 500 uncommitted voters reacting to the debate in the minutes after it happened.
These figures are still preliminary and could change as more respondents complete the survey. But here’s what we have so far:
Forty percent of uncommitted voters who watched the debate tonight thought Barack Obama was the winner. Twenty-two percent thought John McCain won. Thirty-eight percent saw it as a draw.
Forty-six percent of uncommitted voters said their opinion of Obama got better tonight.
Sixty-eight percent of uncommitted voters think Obama would make the right decisions about the economy. Forty-one percent think McCain would.
Forty-nine percent of these voters think Obama would make the right decisions about Iraq. Fifty-five percent think McCain would.
We will have a full report on the poll later on. Uncommitted voters are those who don’t yet know who they will vote for, or who have chosen a candidate but may still change their minds.

Posted by: Mark | September 26, 2008, 11:23 pm 11:23 pm

McCain clearly is the more experienced leader. He is more middle of the road on social issues than many republicans. While Obama has some good ideas, it’s just talk… let him prove himself for some time and walk the talk like McCain has done and then we’ll see. Just cant take the risk at this point. McCain has many good ideas too, but his experience is key… very critical for this position. As for VPs… Palin really isn’t that far behind Obama in the experience arena. Can he speak more eloquently? Sure, that’s his forte. She may not have the “political routine and talk” down as well as Obama, but I don’t see how one can argue being a senator for x days vs. governing a state.
Experience is nearly a wash. Obama has just been more studious at the political side show.

I know this was off the subject–but during the debate, I kept wondering: How can McCain be here? The bailout was NOT resolved. Didn’t he declare when he pseudo suspended his campaign that he was not leaving Washington until there was a deal? Well, there was no deal–and I’m sorry, all I could think about (the debate issues being well worn, by now) was that the rush to Washington where he sat like a lump on a log and did not contribute–was just a stunt and that here he was–not keeping his word again. So tell me, what declaration does McCain make, EVER that he intends to follow through and keep?

Yes he did. McCain needed a slam dunk to pull numbers up, and he didn’t do it. They went toe-to-toe, and as more and more people, particularly the conservatives who have up to now tried to support her, start coming around to the idea that Palin is was mistake, the numbers will continue sliding. In the end, it will be Palin that tanked Johns chance at the white house.

Obama interrupted McCain because McCain sleazily always ended his comments with OUTRIGHT LIES about Obama. Obama should have been more forceful with Lehrer in insisting on the right to correct the lies, and he should have called them lies.
The whole “preconditions” thing is a McCain distortion, too. Obama didn’t say, I’ll offer summits with no prep. He never said it, and he never would. He said that Bush is wrong to stonewall enemies until they agree in advance to concessions. This stupid policy made nuclear powers of two of three of the “Axis of Evil” – and Bush/McCain managed to focus on attacking the one that WASN’T EVEN CLOSE to being a nuclear power – Iraq! Great call – and McCain was out there cheering for it even before Bush. Obama got him dead to rights on that one.

First, kudos to Jim Lehr for being fair. McCain won this debate but in my opinion the real debate is the town hall format. It is not a knock out but McCain was more experience, the better tactician and jabbed better. Obama can prepare for this type of debate but not for a town hall kind. As an example, I like the 41st Bush but he lost the town hall format of debate to Bill Clinton because the older Bush had trouble answering questions from average people liked you and me. In my opinion, if a presidential candidate cannot provide a direct, sincere and convincing (and of course not memorize and straight from the heart) response to average voters, he or she will lose a lot of votes. I think this is the prime weakness of Obama. He is not as good as old Bill. I think if Obama continues to say “I agree with John McCain” in the next debates, I doubt his credibility as a presidential candidate. He used the same tactics during the Democratic primary debates especially against Hillary. It is becoming a trend that people will eventually noticed. It was also distracting to see Obama look at someone in the audience and did some sort of code talk with those people. It seemed someone was coaching him. As I said, McCain won this debate but not by a knock out.

Some of these bloggers need hearing aids and a brain, especially the one that made the remark about Obama having on an American flag pin and McCain not. McCain doesn’t need to wear a pin show he’s an AMERICAN PATRIOT….McCAIN GAVE MANY YEARS OF HIS LIFE SUPPORTING AMERICA…REMEMBER “WAR HERO”. No question where his loyalties and beliefs are.

He is only talking about surge but not having strategie on how he plans to come out from Iraq. Also he is talking about Pakistan.. GO there in Pakistand. Everyone in Pakistan hate us because of our strategy to get align with President Mussharf even we talk about democracy. Pakistan sees Musshart as dictator not democratically elected. Now we see ourselves in trouble so we are supporting democracy. How pathetic is that ?

I’m particularly amazed that Obama didn’t fire back regarding the surge. Even Gen. Paetraus and Ambassador Crooker went before congress to say that while it has worked, it is by no means a success, and the Gen. actually went as far as to say that he believed the reduction in violence would have occurred without the surge, but slower. There was also a part in the transcript where they were talking about how the ethnic cleansing between groups had done a lot of it, and McCain asked why we couldn’t just let that continue.. I mean, that McCain even suggest letting a genocide continue would have been a show stopper. There were lots of counters and Obama basically let it slide..

That’s funny.. because some reporter was on after the elections saying that typically ‘the taller candidate wins’.

I am a 55 year Democrat that will never support the party again because how they pushed him before he was ready I never realized how biased ABC and CNN were to the Democratic Party; but I sure do now.

I am attaching this post from NoQuarter. Despite all the rigged polls through the MSM, this military wife catches Obama’s big lie.
Comment by Holden Caulfield | 2008-09-26 23:37:35
During the presidential debate, John McCain humbly mentioned wearing a bracelet in honor of a dead soldier and promptly shared the name of that soldier with us. Then Obama did something I found absolutely appalling. Obama said, “I gotta bracelet too, it’s uh, uh,…” and then he had to look down to read the name on the bracelet because he could not remember who the soldier was. As a military wife of a war veteran, this relayed clearly to me that Obama wears the bracelet bearing a dead soldier’s name as a political prop with no thought of the individual who made the ultimate sacrifice in giving his life in service to our country. I sincerely hope the American public sees Obama’s awful, heartless disrespect to the military shown over and over again in an internet or TV clip so the media can’t ignore it in their quest to bury Obama’s blunders.

It is so clearly evident that ABC, NBC and CBS are Obama suck ups. It was clearly evident that McCain blew Obama out of the water. Obama doesn’t even remember “John” McCains name! News never even mentioned it. What would have happened if John had called Obama “Osama” by accident. You would never hear the end of it. Better get out of the past Obama. We can’t change that. McCain is the only person that has the knowledge and experience to lead this country. News media is trying so hard to convince us that Obama’s stuttering is intelligent. Or that his rambling actually made sense. Get real! He doesn’t have the “Right Stuff.”

They both made gaffes. McCain referred to Iran’s revolutionary guards as republican guards. But Obama not knowing any better repeated the mistake and said republican guards. The media should have mentioned this or else the foreign press or even Iran media might pounced on this and say the two presidential candidates are ignorant about foreign affairs.

McCain hung Obama out to dry..in a decisive knowledgeable manner…no matter what you say, Yobama has no experience, has socialist views of how the government should run your life….and with ties to feons (Ayers etc.)and racists (Wright etc.) and muslim ties….he is not fit to be president of this country…in fact, last night’s debate brings it to the forefront how unprepared and how disrespectful he is of the military, and the American people who need to be safe…not put in Harm’s way…as this reckless man would do in his efforts to “make friends” with people who are out to kill us or our allies…..
McCain was the winner hands down…I was actually worried BEFORE the debate that McCain had little time to prepare due to him being in Washington DOING his job, and Obama was standing in front a mirror with helpers all week rehearsing hours and hours…(didn’t even pay orr)…..it was clear that even with all the time Obama & his campaign went into to rehearsing their candidate…..McCain, tired and unrehearsed just cleaned his CLOCK…that’s the sign of a true leader…a doer…someone in a crisis with leadership skills who doesn’t need “handleers” like Obama to put things on a teleprompter. McCain can lead under pressure and McCain can talk under pressure without a script

Posted by: tiredofbs | September 27, 2008, 9:21 am 9:21 am

I guess I have to educate the Posters here and Obama…NO, McCain did not make a racist remark (when will the liberals stop playing the race card????????) about the N./S. Koreans…in his comment about how the communist Korean person is smaller than the NON communist Korean person in stature DUE TO NUTRITION…HELLLO??????????????????????????DO any on you know about the poverty and starvation in communist countries???????????????????????????????? God, you are all as stupid as Obama

Posted by: tiredofbs | September 27, 2008, 9:28 am 9:28 am

Maybe McCain should have brushed up on his debate skills instead of making empty threats/gimmicks to postpone the debate. He couldn’t pronounce Akmadinijad without stumbeling, and never mentioned the middle calss once. Neither candidate hit a home run, but as an independent voter (who didn’t appreciate McCain’s debate cancellation gimmick), I’m moving closer to Obama after this debate.

As i look at the Debates it really became clear in my mind how many people are not aware of Mr.McCain is truly a great actor, his skills should be award by Hollywood. Mr. McCain you just do not understand at all what America needs not what you and the group that supports your ideas. You should be ashame of yourself for even trying to act as you can fix it.If you could fix it why are we going thru all this now….you been all the places as you stated and talk with all the people as you say but i remind you its still the same. I am not fool by your acting skills at all. Your stories that you was telling in this debate was very touching, but lets look at your pass, you have agreed mostly what everything that Mr. BUSH PUSH put in your hands and now you telling us to forget your pass results, now you want us to except Mrs. Palin as a vice, man please…. i guest you really think we are stupid. You really remind me of a actor on the big screen, but this is not a movie… you playing with American people lives, many poor people white and black are suffering from your party plans. Even with all that is happening now you good old boys do not have to worry about how you will be able to buy a house, pay for gas, have a job, be able to go a doctor if you are sick, worry about senting you kids to school, street drugs amoung our people. You and the good old boy have your pockets full with cash and trying to make us belive everything is alright, for who i as you not for many of us that not rich or make a good wages, now you are trying to tell us you can Fix It, this is all i heard you said in this debate, now it you think that you won the bebate i will agree you did, but… only for your acting, you remind me of my first grade teacher, she will would tell us all kinds of fairy tale stories, as grow to be older i understand that these stories was make belive, not for real. Mr. McCain are you one of those make belive person, not real, but just pretend person. Webster’s Dictionary says- to give a false appearance of being, possessing,or performing, to make believe or assert falsely. Well Mr. McCain this sounds like who, you or Mrs. Palin???? Well it is what is.But that was a good show you put on in this debate, but what about Sarha Palin how will she hold up in her debate.Mr. B will show also that he is ready for all of your showtime.Obama and Biden is the real deal, now you want to tell so stories like we American are in the first grade and listening to make believe agian, MAN PLEASE now this reminds of the word solitary, you already know what it means. Oh Mr.McCain its really hard to look at Obama the truth, as we all look at your body language it was notice by all, we hope that your dentist will be able to repair the grinding of your teeth or are you waiting on the toothfairy to come.Mr. McCain we the people of America can see and hear what you and you partie is all about, we the people are not dump and stupid as you good old boys think. WELL will Palin help you become what, or will you spend time chasing her around the office, her husband will be looking… yes she really looks good, butt…. is was she the best you can come up with, what Rice was already in place, she a woman, and guest what she has experience, no on the job training, why you looked over that, Man Please,

henry K. said on radio today, Obama was dead wrong about his position on no pre-conditions, and mc cain was right to say it is a naive and very dangerous position….so, Obama gets it wrong again….what else is new?

During the interview on the view all that echos in my head is “Lets move on.”
John McCain is not a President, he belongs at a cocktail party with a drink in his hand.
This should strike fear in us. A man who cannot take the heat of an interview.
“Lets move on”. Scary.

McCain is out of touch. Stop pushing the war in Iraq, Obama has it right – Iraq did not attack us and nothing to do with 911 and we can use that 10 billion dollars a month on Americans and not Iraqis. There will be no white flag or peace treaty – how do we know when to leave, soon as we leave whenever McCain thinks it is time the place could explode again in civil war then what – go in again? Get out save our boys and money and get Bin Laden. Whose judgement do you trust a man who thinks the person who would be president of our country if something happens to him should be the person he spent only an hour and a half with and met only twice briefly in his life. If I’m president I want someone who believes as I do and is passionate about what I am, I would spend a lot of time with them and get to know the person. His judgement also in question when just 13 days ago he said our economy is fundamentally sound. OUT OF TOUCH – retire instead of trying to led a country.

McCain was condescending to Obama, to keep saying he doesn’t understand or doesn’t know something. This to a man who probably has an IQ 40 points higher than McCain. If you believe differently than a man or philosophically feel different that is different to but say that to someone who is more intelligent and a higher IQ – is he a Good ol Boy in hiding in Arizona?

This is the only time Obama had a plan for the country because he’s running for President..now where do you base your trust? all this guy did is to run for the Presidency and if you go back to his record you can’t find any significant accomplishment.
Media is helping him and hopefully they will be called to account if something bad happen. Media conventional wisdom? ..people are stupid. Media thinks Reagan and Bush are idiot and for all their power and money they were beaten in every step of the way by the 2 idiot and they don’t seem to learn.

that 150 billion added to the Bill, could have been added to morgages, child care, schooling, new energy forms. But for golden safty nets for Politicans who caused this. Why?
Congress should not have gone home. Or did they ‘Truely Know’ their Scare Tactics, would work?
America and the World deserve, to be happy.
Nuclear Power for Mangos? No. Sounds like something more, in that.
We could have sent Hydro, Solar, or Wind power plans to help a foreign country.
Vote Independant, and watch CNN and MSNBC, for ALL sides and Points of View.

Kathy, he said the American work force IS indeed strong–in that we are a hard, industrious, and fundamentally good people/workforce.
PPalin is so not letting Gwen take the ball. We all know that her book gets released ON election day

“government-run healthcare Obama’s plan is very much not. ”
–that is EXACTLY what it is adn it will dwarf the bailout in the long run!! We can’t keep promising everything. We can’t afford it.

instead of giving wallsteet or other companies and banks our money $658 Billion it would be better to give the 300 millions citizens each one million dollars so they could buy ahome and pay for health care. buy solor pannels and wind machines to power their home.. The people who tricked low and middle home buyers should not be rewarded nor should banks and they can offer Citizens to save money in their banks like mr Buffett at a 10 % savings or more like credit cards rates paied to the public us citizens. With the money middle and low income people can still work take vacations and buy things that move our workers and add jobs.

All I see are people who had read into the debate what they wanted and never saw or heard anything else . Even the eggheads who evaluated the talks added their blind faith to their cause. With the country in the ditch I wonder what it would take to open all of your eyes? there is no sides here just Americans who need a leader. yet people are clinging to the propaganda that the media had washed the nation with. Even here we have people posting from other countries. People who are posing as Americans deeply concerned about who to vote for. These people want America to fall hard and forever. Ask your selves about what is driving you. The media or your needs. Don’t panic about the banks just move your money into credit unions. Has anyone ever heard about mass credit union failures? Some have gone but almost all are strong. Have faith in each other because right now the leadership has failed. Some great people will be stepping forward to fix the problem. And we need to support them. The worse that we can do is to cry the sky is falling and then show no charity to those in need. I am not going to claim any political position here. It won’t be heard by the screamers. They don’t have time to open their ears while they exercise their right to make noise.

She was so out of her league on foreign affairs it was kind of pathetic. Anyway, good debate. I think she kind of held up, even though she was way out gunned. I could of sworn I could see her shaking one or twice though.. maybe it was cold there :)

I am truly perplexed concerning a Question that keeps coming up at all the debates since the campaign 08 started or since the truth came out and it just does not matter if your a Red or Blue, and that is “You voted for the War and now your against it” Why is it that no one says what the truth turned out to be, Pres. Bush tricked the American public and all of the Senate and House concerning WMD, and that is why all who voted Yes for War do so. Why doesn’t the truth spoken, I don’t get it. What are we hiding everyone know it so why it is not said, after all it’s the truth. I just don’t get it.

This sub-prime loan started in Carter’s administration, then it was refined to it’s present form in Clinton’s administration. So we can give both democratic presidents some of the blame. I was working in Carter’s administration and the run away congress voted so much stuff that the inflation went rampant. We got a cost of living raise and a 15% raise on top of that one year. because of inflation. Actually this happened several years during Carter’s administration.
Do you want our economy working for us again? See a real plan. It is not just talk and wishful thinking, Vote for McCain Palin. They have a plan and it is not just talk….Real Reform Issues….Reform our Trade market which will eventually keep more jobs here….Reform Taxes, Pro-Growth Tax Policy, Innovation Tax Policy, it is Simpler, Fair, Pro-Growth and Competitive…….Health Care Reforms: To Reduce The Rate Of Health Care Inflation, To Make Health Insurance Innovative, Portable And Affordable……Reform Energy for America, Transform Electricity, Expand Domestic Production Of Oil And Gas, Addressing Speculative Pricing Of Oil and Lord knows we need to close the doors to those speculators opinions to where they do not effect our prices at the pump. Also, Transform Transportation and Building Efficiency………Supporting Small Businesses, Lower Energy Costs to small businesses will help, also Controlling Health Care Cost for employees……. Taxes: John McCain’s plan is Simpler, Fair, Pro-Growth, And Competitive…….Opening New Markets…I only covered a few and can not give you the details on each of these mentioned, you must visit the web page. American children have become lazy and take everything for granted. this is who is running wall st. now. As much as i would like to put obama in the white house. I am afraid washington would eat him alive. remember david dinkins? the mexicans are hard working people not afraid to do the jobs, many americans think they are too good for. though i know many middle easterners who are very good people and work hard, i really believe we should put a freeze on the migration from these countries. this is my first and only blog just had to put it out there.

I’m seeing most adults acting like middle preschoolers and im not even in middle school im in high school just because you dont like one of the candidates. Obama has good ideas to make our lives better, he wants to help the lower class and middle class people by lowering taxes for them. Most of us may think we’re not poor or middle class BUT WE ARE! WE ARE NOT RICH! WE ARE ALL POOR!!!! Unless you can afford a million dollar mansion your lower and middle class citizens. Politics aren’t supposed to be like this, we are trying to get our country THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BETTER!!!!
McCain is just a mini Bush and is doing the same thing. I believe he also picked Palin because she is a woman. She’s the governor of a small little state of over 600,000 people. Do you people really think that is a lot? Do you really think that if McCain somehow dies which isn’t rare (he is 72) do you think Sarah Palin can run our country???? She does have a family of her own! LOOK IT UP! Why go through the same problems????? Why still be in debt to other countries???? Do what you think is best but for me the best thing is to vote for Obama (if i could).
Obama ROCKS!!!!!!
John McCain is a DUMBASS!!!!!
stop hearing what you want to hear out of obama’s mouth and twisting it into what you think citizens dont want to hear so they dont vote for him and vote for you. stop blinking your eyes so much do you need eyedrops???

I have always wanted Osama bin Laden to get the justice he deserved, but I believe the American Government is doing us, the American people, an injustice by not revealing a still photo of Osama bin Laden Dead. It is one thing to say he is dead and show the American People some video and simulations of his compound. What people want to know is what happened to Osama Bin Laden, we want evidence, we want a photo. We don’t want some words put together by a press secretary in the background. We want evidence, so we can finally know and see for ourselves that Osama Bin Laden is in fact dead. If no photos are released, people will forever by skeptical about the death of Osama Bin Laden, Justice is done through the acts of seeing and observing for ones self. Words mean nothing, we want a photo, we want evidence. I may sound stupid but I don’t want anyone to second guess the power of the United States. I want loved ones who lost people on that tragic day, september11th, to see for themselves Osama Bin Laden Dead. I want the world to know without hesitation, that if you plan and coordinate an attack on the U.S., Justice will be served. ONLY A PHOTO OF OSAMA BIN LADEN DEAD can do that, with out it there will always be people skeptical of the United States of American and the current administration. God bless the american people and my god bless the United States on America.
