McCain and the BlackBerry

This morning McCain domestic policy adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin was asked what Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., could point to from his work on the Senate Commerce Committee that would prove to the American people that he has experience on technology issues.

"He did this," Holtz-Eakin said, holding up his BlackBerry. "Telecommunications in the United States, the premiere innovation in the past 15 years comes right through the Commerce Committee. So you’re looking at the miracle that John McCain helped create. And that’s what he did."

The campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., immediately tried to paint this as an Al-Gore-I-invented-the-internet moment.

“If John McCain hadn’t said that ‘the fundamentals of our economy are strong’ on the day of one of our nation’s worst financial crises," Obama spox Bill Burton emailed reporters, "the claim that he invented the BlackBerry would have been the most preposterous thing said all week."

- Jake Tapper and Bret Hovell

UPDATE: Senior aide Matt McDonald said that Sen. McCain "laughed" when he heard about Holtz-Eakin’s comment.

"He would not claim to be the inventor of anything, much less the BlackBerry. This was obviously a boneheaded joke by a staffer," McDonald said.

UPDATE 2: ABC News’ impeccably fair Ron Claiborne emails that "McCain may be making light of it, but it was not joke as told by Holtz-Eakin. Just the opposite, he was serious, emphatic and even a little defensive when he said it."

It was much worse than the Al Gore moment. At least it was the United States which invented the Internet. Blackberry — isn’t it a Canadian product?
Sounds like McCain’s domestic policy adviser is as ignorant as McCain.

Mccain- the change candidate? Haha. Yes he had changed his position to most of the issues. Don’t trust him at all.
Palin a Wacko? That is a kind word. She keeps talking about Ebay and bridge to no where. She thinks people don’t know the real story. She has convinced her self with her own lies and can’t tell the difference now.

It is sad that liberal drones take what their Messiah says as fact and do not listen to what really is said.
As part of the Commerce committee he helped push technology through.
Is Obama that uneducated that he does not know what Fundamental means? The fundamentals of our economy is strong, that is the base, the overall economy is overall weak right now, but not in recession.
Now is Obama going to return the millions that were donated to him from Fannie May or is Sen Dodd (D) going to return the millions he got from them. And is Obama going to stay to word for once and say the CEO’s of Fannie may abd Mac should not get the 25 million dollar severance pay the democrats in Congress agreed to?
where is all this Jake?
If you open your eyes you will see that everything the dems get involved with crashes, the bank thanks to Schumer, the credit and mortgage thanks to the dems who got low cost loans like Obama Fannie May and Mac thanks to Obama and Dodds

The BlackBerry is a wireless handheld device that was introduced in 1997 as a two-way pager. The more commonly known smartphone BlackBerry, which supports push e-mail, mobile telephone, text messaging, internet faxing, web browsing and other wireless information services, was released in 2002. It is an example of a convergent device. Developed by the Canadian company Research In Motion (RIM), it delivers information over the wireless data networks of mobile phone service companies.

if this Palin claim of “bridge” can be classified as an untruth, Obama can be called a “liar” just as easily.
Take, if you will, the foundational assertion of Obama’s entire campaign: He is the candidate of post-partisan change. Obama, meanwhile, voted with fellow Democrats 96 percent of the time in Washington. And the bipartisan achievement he most often cites, an ethics reform bill, was passed by unanimous consent in the Senate.

Posted by: amy | September 16, 2008, 11:54 am 11:54 am

Hey HAHA,
It’s confirmed that Palin put the jet on Ebay. That’s what she says and that’s what happened. It may not have sold on there and have been sold instead at another place(like many people do), but it was definitely put on Ebay, just as she said.
You might want to update your talking points, as even the Obama campaign admits she was against the bridge to nowhere, they just claim that she was for it before she was against it.

Amy if Obama voted with the dems 96% of the time
that means that chances are 96% of the time he was voting against the policies that got us HERE.
If you don’t know those policies do yourself a favor and read McCain’s platform.
They’re all there.

That’s right Palin told the truth.
It was McCain who lied about this story twice. First he said it was sold on ebay, then he said it made a profit.
Neither of these things are true.

gang, it isn’t as if McCain himself made some grandious claim, like, say, “We will look back on today as the day the oceans stopped rising and the earth began to heal.” Pompous much? A spokesman for McCain was pointing out that as chair of the committee in question, McCain was instrumental in enabling telecommunication innovations like the Blackberry. And Paige, honey, don’t be snide. McCain’s wife is a Blackberry fan, as are most of his staffers. mcCain does not use one himself, as has been repeatedly pointed out to folks like you, because of his POW injuries. Geez.

how we successfully declared it a success months in
how we said Russert was to blame for revealing identitaies of CIA operatives
how we successfully hired lackeys to run FEMA
how successfully they appointed justices and ran the justice department…
it was easy…just avoid facts and truth.
anybody can run the government if you ignore how bad things are getting (as people are dying in stadiums or America’s biggest financial institutions are going belly up)
just ignore, lie, spin and call the press “elitist liberals”

John McCain said the fundamentals of the economy are strong because he does not want to cause a financial panic. He will not cause people to lose their jobs or life savings in order to score a cheap political point.
Barack Obama, on the other hand, has no problem tanking the economy in order to score cheap short-term political points.
And that is the difference between McCain and Obama.

Posted by: gridlock | September 16, 2008, 12:26 pm 12:26 pm

John McCain didn’t say he invented the Blackberry. A staffer used it as an example for telecommunications advancements. If you had read the whole story, you’d see that McCain doesn’t claim anything of the sort. ON THE OTHER HAND, Gore himself verbally stated he helped create the internet.

The economy is not strong. It’s not crumbled yet. It’s crumbling and John and “W” are responsible. Their stupid policies. The outsourcing , The stupid liars war, The rediculous tax cuts for the rich while beating up the middle class. It’s a joke and the Republicans don’t care. They vote to win. If America loses, aw, so what. If the country dries up and gets blown away, so what. As long as they don’t have to pay for it they’ll just laugh and keep putting on their lipstick.
Wrapped in the flag they drain the country dry. As LONG AS THEY DON’T HAVE TO PAY, THAT’S ALL THEY CARE ABOUT. they should look up the definition of patriotism. Big words they don’t understand like responsibility, love of their fellow man. (and I don’t mean like your senator in the bathroom) Care of the land you live in, for your children. I’m wasting my breathe. They just don’t get it!

Why all this talk of the Blackberry? We know he didn’t invent it, so let’s drop it.
More importantly, what will the McCain ticket do for our families? McCain hardly saw his children while they grew up exept for weekends and holidays. And Palin? Give me a break! She is more concerned about drilling oil and killing wolves in the last American wild lands than she seems to be about spending time with her own children. Is she capable to lead the talk as a mother for family values? From what I see, No!
McCain’s family is worth $100 million dollars. How will he understand a family that has both parents working just to get by? No thanks!

This whole controversy is RIDICULOUS. our economy is fundamentally strong. 3.3% growth last quarter. Financial market is undergoing a natural correction. My small business is doing fantastically well. so the Dow dropped ~5%. It dropped 25% in the 80′s in one day! Obviously, it’s in Obama’s best interest for the economy to tank – it improves his chances. I never thought I’d see a more cynical presidential nominee than bill clinton, but obama runs rings around him. You want to see wholesale destruction of the economy? Put Democrats in congress and the white house. We’ve all seen what they’ve done to Baltimore, Detroit, Philadelphia, LA, DC, and on and on.

I have a lot of respect for Senator McCain. However, that does not mean because of his POW experience, he will be a great president. (Then, again, look at how many Americans are stupid enough to fall for the spins of Karl Rove and vote for Bush Jr. 2x!)
I am sorry, let’s clarify one thing. Can he write? Can he hold a fork / spoon? If he can, then there is no reason for him not to be able to tap
on the keyboards. This is a lame excuse trying to link this to his war injury so as to provoke sympathy and gather patriotic support. He probably feels too old to want to learn new tricks.
If we elect him, then we truly will have to worry about who will become our vice-president and who are the real puppeteers running the country eventually.

Posted by: somesense | September 16, 2008, 12:42 pm 12:42 pm

McCain didn’t say he invented the BBery.
BUT, Al Gore *never* claimed to have invented the internet. That was a Rove stoked urban rumor.
The difference between Gore and McCain however is that Gore is very tech savvy, is on Google and Apple’s board because of it, founded a pretty cool cable company AND was one of the instrumental people on the government side pushing to form the internet.
From Wikipedia:
Moreover, there is no question in our minds that while serving as Senator, Gore’s initiatives had a significant and beneficial effect on the still-evolving Internet.”[94][92] Cerf would also later state: “Al Gore had seen what happened with the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act of 1956, which his father introduced as a military bill. It was very powerful. Housing went up, suburban boom happened, everybody became mobile. Al was attuned to the power of networking much more than any of his elective colleagues. His initiatives led directly to the commercialization of the Internet. So he really does deserve credit.”[95] Former Republican Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Newt Gingrich also stated: “In all fairness, it’s something Gore had worked on a long time. Gore is not the Father of the Internet, but in all fairness, Gore is the person who, in the Congress, most systematically worked to make sure that we got to an Internet, and the truth is — and I worked with him starting in 1978 when I got [to Congress], we were both part of a “futures group” — the fact is, in the Clinton administration, the world we had talked about in the ’80s began to actually happen.”[

Blackberry may have been created by a Canadian company, but its US wireless infrastructure that supports BB users here. It’s US consumer privacy rules that apply to who can use numbers and how. It’s US funds that help support R&D on interoperable systems to look to 2nd gen innovation. All of those run through Congress/Commerce Committee. Just as any telecommunications, telephony, Internet, wireless concerns do, for either business or consumers.
Any legislation that impacts delivery, distribution, use and misuse of abovementioned comes through Congress/Commerce Committee. Think McCain might have picked up some experience with technology issues? – I do.

Posted by: ricky | September 16, 2008, 12:59 pm 12:59 pm

Our economy is fundamentally strong? I can’t believe there are people out there pushing this fallacy. Let’s throw out some facts here:
The government had to bail out/take over Freddy Mac and Fanny Mae because of the housing crisis.
The U.S. is experiencing a housing crisis of epic proportions. There are more people who have either already foreclosed or are in danger of being foreclosed on their home mortgages than any time in U.S. history.
The “earnings gap” between corporate executives and the average earner has ballooned to where now the execs earn 400 times the average worker.
Inflation is slowly rising, in part due to high energy prices.
Oil and gas prices have reached historic highs, even when accounting for inflation.
AIG, and Merrill Lynch are in the throes of bankruptcy.
The average family requires TWO incomes just to get by.
An untold number of high paying jobs have left the country never to return. Not just blue collar factory jobs, but now even high paying technical jobs as well.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg. On a more personal note, as an engineer at a high tech firm, I have noticed that my salary increases have been lagging the inflation index for the past 4 years, even as my company has been laying off many good paying high tech jobs because it is moving them overseas. They have also been whittling away at my benefits. All this despite the fact that the company has been making record profits.
So, stop pushing this “fundamentally sound” economy stuff. It’s a load, and those of us who are out here living it know it!

Okay – let’s see, the economy really started to get bad just in the last year or two. That’s odd, because isn’t that when the Democrats took over Congres? So how can that be the Republican’s fault? As far as what’s going on right now – it’s greed pure and simple. People bought houses they couldn’t afford and ran up credit card bills they couldn’t pay. The loan companies got rich off giving people loans they shouldn’t have qualified for. So, who’s going to have to pay for their irresponsibility? The taxpayers. Obama himself has said he thinks people who make more money should pay a higher percentage of taxes and give it to the people who don’t. What? Why should someone have to pay a higher percentage because they worked hard and became successful in life? Everyone should pay the same percentage. Then, the people who make moer will pay more in dollars and the people who make less will pay less. Obama said he’s going to give a tax cut to 95% of the population – 40% of the population doesn’t even pay taxes! Those people will get a check. Income redistribution anyone? Robinhood Obama to the rescue.

McCain supported The Reform Institute, a Virginia based think tank that, as The Chicago Tribune noted, is a sham used to collect contributions from those its reports and Congressional testimony favor. McCain campaign operative Rick Davis is prominent in the Institute’s collection efforts.
“In 2003 and 2004, a telecommunications company with business before the McCain-led Senate Commerce Committee contributed a total of $200,000 to the institute. The contributions were solicited by Rick Davis, a veteran Washington lobbyist who was president of the institute from 2003 through 2005 and who is now McCain’s campaign manager.”

Are you for real? Do you not see the irony in your statement based on the fact that the current “rightist” administration has been using our troops as pawns for the past 6 years in Iraq? Then McCain votes against the GI bill. So that would make you a idiot hypocrite wouldn’t it? With Americans like these, who needs enemies?

Kim,
Do you know that Bush is still the president? Even in the Democratic Congress bills do not become laws without the cooperation of the president (who must sign the bills or allow the bills to pass without his signature) or a substantial number of the Republicans (if the president vetoes the bills). In other words, the Democratic Congress cannot enact economic policy (or any other kind of policy) on its own. Bush is still running the show.

… wait until he finds out that all those taxes went to pay for hand outs (read votes for democrats) to his friends that didn’t work and spent the weekend at the river !!!
Conservatives believe you can make it with hard work and the American system.
“Progressives” believe you can make it by organizing, voting like your told, and taxing those that work hard and follow the American system…

That’s what McCain really meant; after all, he’s a millionaire like Bush & his fellow Republicans in Congress and the GOP. He does not care about the rest of us, hard-working Americans who are struggling right now. So he did tell the truth.

The most important factor in all this debate is the sad fact that Hillary Clinton was forced out of the nomination process. Regardless of the economic situation at present, John McCain looks more credible and prepared than Barack Obama. If Hillary had been the democratic party’s nominee, the whole equation would have been different. In that scenario (and the worst missed opportunity for democrats), Hillary would have been the best choice for the country. Right now, thanks to the incompetent and conniving democratic party leadership, McCain is the best choice we have for president of the USA. I’d rather have a Republican war hero who fought for my country as president than a democrat whose numerous questionable associations cast serious doubts on his character and judgement. I hope Hillary runs in 2012.

In Alaska, either Mr. Monegan was fired for trying to do what Gov. Palin hired him to do and protect the citizens of the state by seeking funding to fight Sexual Abuse which she vetoed. Or because he would not fire a certain Trooper as was her will. Either way, that’s the corrupt ‘reform’ she stands for? No thanks.

I cant believe this is the issue Democrats want to run on. With Obama loosing his lead and know loosing in a number of polls he continues to attack. Obama is an Politician full of empty pie in the ski promises. He has no record to run on no experience to speak of and continues to change all of his opinions on the issues to closer align with John McCain. Fact is the The McCain Palin ticket is more experienced and has a record of delivering what they say not just promising. Obama has avoided any Debate in a town hall setting and continues to allow interviews to the media under the understanding certain questions are off limits. He has not been adequately called out about his relationships with Rev. Wright, William Ayres, and Rezko. Obama always talks about “judgment” is more important than experience but what kind of judgment does it show when you surround yourself and value the friendship and guidance of a Racist, Terrorist and Criminal Slum Lord? He says McCain is a career politician who is corrupted by the system but pick as VP candidate who has served longer and has a history of Sexist statements, and plagiarizes his speeches, not to mention he was pushing for an Iraq invasion even before President Bush. He wants to tax companies and he really believes this will benefit me how? By forcing that company to raise prices, lay me off or just move out of the United States period. How do you think he is going to pay for his agenda? Take from the rich give to the poor? News Flash if people are rich they can afford to move and spend the money they earn in a more tax friendly Country. Back to companies I found this on tax foundation.org ” Following newly released OECD data that shows U.S. corporate income taxes are 50 percent higher than the OECD average, the Tax Foundation released a revised summary showing that the US federal corporate income tax quietly taps family pocketbooks for nearly $370 billion per year in the form of higher prices, lower wages and poorer return on investment.” what does this mean dollar wise to you? well here is the answer ” “Most people think corporate income taxes are paid by wealthy, anonymous companies,” said Hodge. “But as economists have been teaching for years, ultimately people bear the burden of corporate taxes, not companies. And in 2006 that burden averaged $3,190 per household. That’s more than the average household spends on restaurant food, gasoline or home electricity in a year.” Simply put any tax increase NOBAMA gets approved will be by paid by us in the end. Wake up you Liberals and stop living on Obama Island A.K.A Fantasy Island.

I’m a HUGE McCain detractor but what I hear is the guy saying that McCin was involved in promoting the communications technology that made the use of the Blackberry, Wifi, etc. possible. Whether or not he was instrumental in this is what needs to be looked into.
To use a similar distortion as was attributed to Gore can tend to backfire. Especially when it hits the right wing echo chamber. There’s enough out there without having to misrepresent something as sill as this.

Earlier this year, John McCain’s campaign offered a boast similar to what campaign Douglas Holtz-Eakin said this morning about the senator’s role in helping to create the BlackBerry.
In a survey filled out for a consortium of science groups and leading scientists and engineers, McCain wrote:
“I am the former chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. The Committee plays a major role in the development of technology policy, specifically any legislation affecting communications services, the Internet, cable television and other technologiesUnder my guiding hand, Congress developed a wireless spectrum policy that spurred the rapid rise of mobile phones and Wi-Fi technology that enables Americans to surf the web while sitting at a coffee shop, airport lounge, or public park.”

Karl: Obama is the king of the flip flop from off shore drilling, to Russia and Georgia, Campaign Finance, On Iraq, Obama said trip to Iraq might lead him to refine his promise to quickly remove U.S. troops from the war.He now supports broader authority for the government’s eavesdropping program and legal immunity for telecommunications companies that participated in it, after opposing a similar bill last year. After the Supreme Court overturned the District of Columbia’s gun ban, the handgun-control proponent said he favors both an individual’s right to own a gun as well as government’s right to regulate ownership. Obama became the first major-party candidate to reject public financing for the general election after earlier promises to accept it. He not only embraced but promised to expand Bush’s program to give more anti-poverty grants to religious groups, a split with Democratic orthodoxy. He objected to the Supreme Court’s decision outlawing the death penalty for child rapists, even though he has been anti-capital punishment. Obama also said “mental distress” should not count as a health exception that would permit a late-term abortion, saying “it has to be a serious physical issue,” addressing a matter considered crucial to abortion rights activists. Most of these views have changed after beating Clinton in the Primary.. Fact is his new views would not have even won him the Democratic nomination. Obama is a man who will do or say anything to win. The only change he really offers is on his opinions. He has taken attack politics to a new level.

: Ryan C : That quote that you mentioned says that he and his committee where responsible for legislation that allowed these technologies to move forward. Nowhere does it ever lead us to believe they developed any technology. By the way when reporters asked McCain today about the statement he said he had nothing to do with it. Another example of a liberal biased media hyping up a non-story, again I ask what about Rev. Wright , William Ayres, Rezko? Posted by: Ricardo | September 16, 2008, 5:41 pm 5:41 pm

The Blackberry uses radio spectrum. The Commerce Committee opened up the spectrum for more mobile device bandwidth.
Campaign worker, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, pressed to provide an example of what McCain had accomplished on that committee, said the senator did not have jurisdiction over financial markets, then he held up his Blackberry, telling reporters: “He did this.”
“Telecommunications of the United States, the premiere innovation in the past 15 years, comes right through the Commerce Committee. So you’re looking at the miracle that John McCain helped create,” Holtz-Eakin said. “And that’s what he did. He both regulated and deregulated the industry.”
Nobody said he invented the blackberry, just that his committee opened up the regulations to allow its radio.
MORE LIBERAL LIES and SPIN.

John McCain cosponsored a bill in 2005 to create an oversight board for Fannie May and Freddie Mac because he saw warning signs of trouble. He cosponsored the FEDERAL HOUSING ENTERPRISE REGULATORY REFORM ACT OF 2005. In words that now sound like prophecy, McCain said: “I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.” Unfortunately, the bill was blocked by democrats who complained that the oversight would prevent lenders from giving out risky loans to those who couldn’t afford them, and the bill was killed.

As a progressive liberal, I don’t get it. I appreciate the poster who points out that McCain personally voted against the telecommunications bill touted as supporting use of the Blackberry, etc. McCain’s committee was certainly slow on the uptake as 15 nations have better, higher speed systems than ours right now. Harkening back to the ’80s, our own Al Gore led the way with legislation that harnessed a US government invention and led to the creation of the worldwide internet as we know it. The Republican Party is contolled by corporate interests that block progress they see as competition. This never changes. To develop new ideas and inventions, to evolve and make our economy and businesses survive and thrive requires progressive, proactive, common sense officials elected by and answering to their grassroots constituencies. McCain isn’t it. His record proves it.

Second installment for LIAR’s edification:
This one has to do with reducing the threat of modern weapons getting into the hands of terrorists (unlike say, Cheney, who with McCain’s blessings helped send weapons to the terrorists who then used them to attack us):
In January 2007, the president signed Obama and Lugar’s legislation “Extend Terrorist Risk Insurance” (467) aimed at improving nonproliferation efforts, including eliminating stockpiles of shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles.
Later that year, Obama proposed creating an internationally monitored uranium reserve that would guarantee fuel would be available for commercial nuclear reactors and dissuade countries from building their own uranium enrichment capability

Posted by: James | September 17, 2008, 4:42 am 4:42 am

Another lesson for LIAR. Obama, unlike McCain, took some initiative in helping to punish guys who do things like enslave children soldiers:
In July 2005, the Senate passed legislation co-sponsored by Obama to provide $13 million for the Special Court for Sierra Leone to use in the prosecution of former Liberian President Charles Taylor

Posted by: James | September 17, 2008, 4:46 am 4:46 am

Unfortunately, I have real work to do, Mr. LIAR, so rather than detail
each of these one by one, I’ll let you do some research yourself on a
a few more Senate bills that Obama wrote and/or sponsored. A partial list follows, but hopefully it will teach you not to lie in public so much.

Thank you James for bringing up mine safety.
Is there anyone but me who is troubled by the fact that the “wardrobe malfunction” received a fine more than the total fines imposed by OSHA for all coal mining deaths in places like Sago for all years combined 2000-2006?

Wow – Wow – WOW! Is this story 100% off base… the news is NOT the embelishment of the blackberry the NEWS is that a potential presidential candidate doesn’t know how to use a computer or send and receive emails!!! The spin is that his “AIDE” does it for him. That’s B.S.!
Does anyone truly want a President who doesn’t understand the basical principles behind current technology???? WOW – nothing has effected me nearly as much as this simple, seemingly innocuous admission.

Further, as Jonah Goldberg points out, “In 2000, Forbes magazine called him the ‘Senate’s savviest technologist.’ That same year, Slate’s Jacob Weisberg gushed that McCain was the most ‘cybersavvy’ of all the presidential candidates that year, a crop that included none other than Al Gore. Being chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, Weisberg explained, ‘forced him to learn about the Internet early on, and young Web entrepreneurs such as Jerry Yang and Jeff Bezos fascinate him.’”

I have been browsing online more than 3 hours these days, yet I by no means found any fascinating article like yours. It’s pretty worth sufficient for me. In my view, if all website owners and bloggers made just right content as you did, the web shall be much more useful than ever before. “Learn to see in another’s calamity the ills which you should avoid.” by Publilius Syrus.
