Stephanopoulos: McCaskill Says McCain’s Age, Melanoma ‘A Reality’

ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos reports: Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, a co-chair of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, said this morning that Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s age and history of melanoma are fair topics for political discussion.

“I think what we’re talking about is a reality,” McCaskill said in an exclusive interview on “This Week.”  “Other people talk about his melanoma.  We’re talking about a reality here that we have to face.”

On Friday, McCaskill had previewed this line of attack, telling Missouri reporters that McCain would be “one of the oldest presidents we’ve ever had,” according to an account in the Kansas City Star.

On “This Week,” McCaskill pointed to McCain’s age to question his judgment in picking Sarah Palin as his running mate.

“This is someone who’s going to be one heartbeat away from the presidency,” said McCaskill. “All of us know it.”

In response, key McCain supporter Carly Fiorina accused McCaskill of “ageism.”

“I frankly find this disrespectful in the extreme,” she said. “I think this continued resort to ‘he’s too old’ is desperation, frankly — not to mention disrespectful to a very capable commander in chief.”

Last spring, Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean had said his party would avoid invoking McCain’s age during the general election.

“I doubt we will bring it up in the election,” Dean said in April. “There is somewhat of a higher ethical bar on what we do. We don’t have any Lee Atwaters or Karl Roves on our side.”

Let’s not forget what Obama has been listening to for the past 20 years.
Malcolm X’s statement on Black Liberation Theory:
“Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community … Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy.”

Well McCain is too old to be president.

She is right..America has lost their minds and need to snap out of it and quick. If Mccain/Palin get in office. God help us. You think people don’t have jobs now? You think gas at 4 dollars is high now? You think people are losing their homes now? You think people are losing their jobs now? People don’t have healthcare? You let them get in, we won’t have a middle class anymore. It will be obsolete. You will only have the RICH and the POOR. And this country will be dictated by another republican in as president. Meanwhile, womens reproductive rights will be gone, Seniors will now worry about McCain gambling their retirement with privatizing. He has NO PLANS different from Bush. How is that change? So if you have lost your home, lost your job, lost your pension, lost your healthcare and you still vote for the McCain/Palin ticket? You deserve what you get!!

The McCain campaign is desperate to change the subject. False controversy takes the emphasis away from a candidate who was so uninspiring that only 20% of his supporters were enthusiastic about him. Tiny crowds of bored people were the norm for McCain. Palin was selected by the same folks who brought us a “compassionate conservative” from Texas, who, like Palin, has turned out to be anything but what they sold.
She brought home more earmarks per person than any other state, 10 times higher rate than Illinois.
Meanwhile, hard working Americans are slipping into the mud in this economy. Our real incomes have dropped while everything costs more. Can you tell me one thing McCain has done to help uninsured Americans get health care? Can you tell me what McCain has done over the last 26 years that will help us transition to a renewable energy economy? McCain agrees that global warming is influenced by the burning of fossil fuels. But you know what his solution is, you heard it at the convention: Drill, Baby, Drill.
Drilling. That was the answer in the 1970′s, 1980′s, 1990′s and most of the first decade of the new century. Don’t you think it’s time we actually did something different?
Barack Obama authorized incentives for renewable, green energy in this country. Barack Obama authorized a program to help 150,000 people in Illinois get access to affordable healthcare, and he voted to cover uninsured children in the CHIP program. Barack Obama will cut taxes for 95% of American working families, and everyone making less than $250,00 will see large decreases in the taxes they pay across the board: Payroll, income, capital gains taxes, etc. will decrease for hard working people and we will be able to begin to get ahead once more.
McCain voted against healthcare for children. McCain voted against renewable energy. But McCain emphatically supports tax cuts- the biggest rate cut going to those who make over 2.5 million dollars a year.
Barack Obama will lower taxes for those making less than $250,000 per year to the lowest levels in 50 years. Those making more will be taxed at the same rate they enjoyed in the Reagan years. Senior citizens making less than $50,000 will pay NO TAXES under Barack Obama.
Barack Obama: Lowest tax rates for working families in the last 50 years, affordable healthcare for the uninsured, clean renewable domestic energy.
McCain wants to continue the Bush policies in each of these areas.
And I still haven’t heard anyone ask McCain how he plans to pay for continuing Bush’s failed policies. Perhaps China still has some money to lend…..

Good old John McCain, he’s 72 and wants the toughest job in the world. Just for interest I did some quick research on famous people that a lot of people might think did real well at an old age.
John Wayne last movie “The Shootist” age 69
Colonel Saunders sold Kentucky Fried Chicken to KFC age 74
Mr. Rogers retired from PBS age 73
Lucille Ball last sitcom which flopped age 73
Wilfred Brimley last movie age 69
Johnny Carson retired from The Tonight Show age 67
John McCain ends his first term age 76

how can some people believe that Obama’s a muslim?? I would hope after decades of decades of rasism this country would change and change is what we need. I think McCain is just tryin to steal Obama’s mantra by claiming to be of change “yeah sure you want change, when you finally woke up and realized that’s what majarity of the country is for.” McCain doesn’t realize and can’t relate to real Americans, because real everyday americans can’t afford 9 homes must less are lucky if they get to own 1!!! McCain and Palin are rich snobs and in secret probably racist.I hope majority of this country realizes this because if they do then,McCain will see how out of touch this 74yr old is!! and the Democrats will win!most of the people in this country are not rich they are poor and middle class so if they come out and vote for someone who supports the workin class then will win. people who actually have to work, to survive and need thier jobs, and helathcare that they can’t afford to loss, and live from pay check to pay check these are everyday americans. That’s what those rich republicans can’t relate to. most republicans come from money and don’t understand what it’s like to work for your money and have to work for a living.I am a true blue democrat and hope that all the democrats come out and vote for our guy
Obama!!!!

Age is an important factor. Whether too young or too old. The pressure of work being President, results in a quick shrinkage of the brain.
McCain’s VP must be a standby President who must be ready all time, to step in if need be.

You libs in the media keep complaining about McCains campaign and have no prblem with this kind of nasty comments like this loser McCaskill. Should we be worried Obama is going to get lung cancer while in office from all the smomking he does? She should be in Missouri trying to stop the beating Obama is going to get in her state in Nov.

I heard yesterday on CNN that their staff doctor was provided with 1,000 pages of doctor’s health records from John McCain, and that everything looked good..
Obama only provided them with one paragraph of information to analyze.
Wonder what they’re hiding?

Has Obama quit smoking cigarettes yet?? For over forty years now, we have known that smoking leads to diseases, which cause death. Could someone – anyone – is the press alive? – look into Obama’s medical history? That one letter from his doctor isn’t quite the same as his ENTIRE medical history.

I am a lifelong Democrat, the centrist Clinton kind, and I will be voting for McCain- my 1st vote ever for a Republican. With McCain’s mother still active and alert at 96 years, I can safely bet on John McCain’s genes to serve him well.
Obama raises the age issue at his own peril as there is a huge number of older voters who could take offense

Posted by: American Voter | September 14, 2008, 10:57 am 10:57 am

Obama’s belief in the hateful Black Liberation Theory is important and speaks volumes of his character and judgment. This scares me, and the fact that his followers NEVER have a good reason why he followed this belief says that there is no excuse for it.

Posted by: 777 | September 14, 2008, 10:58 am 10:58 am

People who have critical thinking ability should really question McCain’s judgement.
He is 72 years old, has had 4 bouts of Melanoma and he picks someone whose experience consists of mayor of 5,000 people and a governor who hired someone to do her job. Has no understanding of the issues but kept repeating same answers. It is right to question his judgment. He did not put his country first. He put his political agenda frist and has continously exploited women for politcal gains.!!!!!!!!!

Sexism. Ageism. Playing the “race card.” Media bias. The GOP is the biggest bunch of whiners in this nation’s history. McCain has pulled a lot of tactics that could easily be perceived as racism by the democrats, but Obama has te dignity to not pull out an “-ism” card. Obama/Biden 08

Let’s be realistic: According to actuarial tables, McCain has a 1 in 7 chance of dying during his first term and 1 in 3 chance of dying during a second term. It’s completely legitimate for voters to take those statistics into account, and it’s irresponsible to pretend that the age question isn’t legitimate.

Posted by: Durant Imbden | September 14, 2008, 11:01 am 11:01 am

Stanley-
I am not a liar. Black Liberation Theory is followed in Trinity United, Obama’s church. That is no secret. Don’t want to believe it? Look it up.

Posted by: 777 | September 14, 2008, 11:03 am 11:03 am

It’s ageism to criticize someone simply for the number of years they have lived. It isn’t ageism to express concerns about what that means. And he has had melanoma–once you have that, it’ll get you, eventually. He may be fairly healthy at the moment, but health can decline quickly. It certainly wouldn’t help to be in one of the most stressful jobs out there–remember how the White House ages its residents more than time alone would seem to be responsible for?

“But what of Senator Obama’s Health? Smoker 21 years. It’s not as if once you quit smoking, all the health effects immediately disappear. In fact, after enough smoking, some health effects are irreversible. Consider just the arteries and lungs.” (Jeff Stier, huffingtonpost.com)
“A 1998 study in the Journal for the American Medical Association reported that the amount of fatty deposits in the carotid artery depended on total pact-years of tobacco exposure, not whether the patient currently smokes. AND A SMOKER’S EXCESS RISK OF A STROKE DOESN’T RETURN TO THAT OF NONSMOKERS UNTIL AT LEAST FIVE, OR A LONG AS TWENTY YEARS AFTER QUITTING. SEN OBAMA WOULD HAVE TO SERVE A HYPOTHETICAL FOUR SMOKE FREE TERMS BEFORE HIS STROKE RISK RETURNED TO NORMAL.” (huffingtonpost.com)Obama family history includes cancer…

Man this is a stretch. Mckatskill is a liberal in Missouri and she is showing how desparate things must be in the Obama Camp. the 527s are about to crank up. scary for him.
Next subject. To the idiots that keep posting Obamas tax items.
Things to remember.
He will let the Bush Tax cuts expire. the 95%ers will get a tax increase.
He will raise the Corporate tax rate: Corps will have to raise the price of thier product to compensate because they are beholden to their stockholders. Guess who gets to pay the increase… the 95%ers. This includes the evil oil companies.
He will increase capital gains taxes:
This will keep alot of people wanting to retire from retiring. Nestegg retirement and selling of property will for retirement will be a bad thing.
If you are in sales or are on a bonus plan at work. Your bonus plans will get a tax increase too.
So you idiots that believe the tax plan that Obama is selling need to look into cause and effect.
If he wins…

There’s nothing ageist about telling voters that McCain’s had 4 bouts with melanoma. Nothing Mrs. McCaskill said is untrue. She is stating facts that voters are going to have to consider when they go to the polls in November. What a surprise, the McCain campaign is playing the age card now.

John McCain has already lived past the age of every older male McCain relative. His physical body is not in good shape (I’ve seen him in person at campaign events). He seems to have a problem remembering things (like Palin getting earmarks for Alaska). So my conclusion is that his age is an issue because of who he picked as a VP. No one would be saying anything about his age if he had picked Kay Bailey Hutchinson for VP. So I think it’s a valid issue.

If this was an innocent error on 777′s part, perhaps just a case of poor research then I apologize for this critique. But I must this this does smack of the new Republican campaign strategy of telling the ‘big lie’

Regardless of the weight you might give it, it has got to be considered if making a rational decision.

All those of you who talk about McCain’s good genes from his mother are not acknowledging that his father died at 70. He also has had serious health problems – melanoma. He has not released his medical records, and I wonder if he has the same cardiac issues that his father had. At his age, he mightg not survive a heart attack, or would be greatly disabled as a result. He also was not very bright to begin with, and I have to wonder about his decision making abilities.

777,
Stop your coded racist rants. Get over your bruised ego.
McCaskill is right. McCain’s age should be an issue. The MSM has no problem making Obama’s race an issue. Why not put everything on the table. Someone as old as McCain should not be seeking the highest office in the land. Reagan was the exception, because unlike McCain he had class.

I see McCain age an inspiration and give me hope that I too can achieve great things when I am that age.
I see his age as a Wisdom and I see him “father-figure” for our country.
We are living in serious times and we need “serious” and “sage” people to lead us.
Actually, McCain people have to brag about his age. this is not the time to have a 47 year old gets training …

I think that this is a very real concern. I am a physician, and the hospital(a hospital on the list of 100 Best Hospitals by US News and World Reports)that I work at does not allow anyone over the age of 65 to be a Chairman of a Department- you must step down. Pilots are no longer allowed to fly commercial aircrafts at the age of 65. Why is this? Because the physiology and psychology of aging suggests that there may be concern about physical and mental ability in a high stress, physically demanding job. This is a very real concern with McCain given that he is melanoma survivor.
Just as the country is talking about race and gender in term of voting, the country must consider this fact in their decision. To suggest otherwise is ignorant.

my mother told my father not to hit me on the head because I’ll become a Republican. Heaven help us all and save us from the Republicans! They are going to run this country into the ground(as one blogger said) by burrowing money for china to buy oil from Saudi Arabia. These are people who would laugh at you if you work to help your community. I think that is mental illness..if you laugh at someone who is trying to help his/her community then something is wrong with your head! Its mental illness to pretend you are rich! The Republican party are for the rich and those who pretend to be rich. Heaven help us all and save us from the Republicans!

Because of this drug use, especially cocaine, during his younger days (assuming it has stopped), Obama could drop dead at any minute. Just running for president has made him look increasingly older over the last year.

Frieda, you must not have heard the latest reports that Reagan might have been suffering from his Alzheimers as early as the beginning of his 2nd term….Dn’t quote me, but it was an actual article. Obama is more in tune with the times now. Any fool can see that McCain-Palin want to take the world back to the Cold war….

Ok, think real hard. If your medical file has 1000 pages in it, is that a good thing or a bad thing? My file is maybe a page or two long, because I’m healthy. If you’re very, very ill, often over a long period of time, you would accumulate 1000 pages of medical history. That doesn’t mean McCain is healthy, it means he’s not.

Twenty-two percent of Americans 71 and older are affected by mild cognitive impairment, a decline in brain function that causes memory loss and can lead to dementia. Further, 35 to 40 percent of older adults have neural deficits that lead to poor decision making.

I believe Republican conservatism is equivalent to mental illness
1. To laugh at people who work to make their community better
2. To justify a war in Iraq when all the non partisan commitees after doing indept research concluded that there was no connection between Iraq and 911
3.To support a man who spend time in Vietnam yet would not support the veterans of war
4. To talk about the santity of life but don’t care about the thousands of innocent people who died as a result of the war in Iraq.
5. To suggest that the current economy is strong and that people who think otherwise is struggling with a figment of their imagination.
Call me Liberal..I feel 100% better! Republican consevatism is mental illness. Heaven help us all and save us from the Republicans!

Wrong oracle…look up the facts, as I cited my source….McCain chance of re-occurance has diminished as he was diagnosed in August of 2000 (12% up to five year window) he is now a survior and not a victim.(2000-2005)so if he becomes President his chance of dying his first term from cancer is non-negotiable..Obama has at least a 1 in 7 chance, your figures not mine, (14.2%) of suffering a stroke because of his long time smoking habit…for the 16 years or 4 smoke free terms….(American Medical Association.)Do the math….

I wish the Democrats would get their wording right.. it’s not McCain’s age, it’s his health. He has poor health.
When McCain picked a grossly unqualified VP, he knowingly invited his health to become an issue.

Who are the cretins that visit these websites and invoke “Barack the Muslim” crap, and “Obama is a cocaine addict”. Is that you Jerome Corsi? Or Steve Ducey? You folks can go back to Free Republic in-bred ignorantville. If you want real gossip, we can talk about McCain and Keating 5; McCain and his first marriage; where are the kids from the first marriage?; what about the inside deals with oil companies he’s made since deciding to runs; Palin’s son Track’s drug problems before enlisting; her daughters sexual behavior while Sarah was doing state business at home. These and more if you want gossip. The difference is these have some factual basis to them.

How bad does it have to get before they wake up?
The Republican base is the backwash at the bottom of the glass. They will support any RNC PIG no matter how immoral and deceitful they are.
The RNC policies have WRECKED our economy and yet they are running McCain who will give us 4 more years of the same failed economic policies.
McCain’s age and health history means (per widely used actuarial tables – if they were wrong insurance companies would not make a profit) show he has a 1 in 4 chance of dying during his term. For this reason the VP pick is less than the typical heartbeat away from becoming President.
Sarah Palin LIED about visiting the troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican vice presidential nominee confirmed Saturday.
If Obama did such a thing his campaign would be over.
Palin is an AIP supporter and her husband was an AIP member who would REMOVE A STAR FROM THE US FLAG.

Don’t put up with this crap people. The man has cancer and is 72 years old. What is the average life expectancy in America for a male?
“Male life expectancy hit a record 75.2 in 2004, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently announced.”
Add having cancer – FOUR BOUTS – to the picture and it is a LEGITIMATE concern.
According to this campaign, the VOTERS are not allowed to ask questions or have concerns.

So why don’t you show mw the sources that say a person without cancer has less of a chance of survival then a man who is 30 yrs older and is a cancer survivor…Come on man, I understand what you’re trying to do, but it doesn’t make sense…Show me anything that proves that McCain is healthier than Obama and I’ll shut up. You talk about chance of survival with smokers right?? Well you cvant use that for this argument unless you can tell me exactly how long Obama smoked. Do any McCain supporters REJECT outright the racist boxes of waffles being sold at an event funded by focus on the family or some such religious group that says they are all about values.
Have you supporters called up to express your disgust or did you just walk on by or read about it and say/do nothing?
Did you walk the walk according to your values and if not why not?
Is not saying something about racism the same as supporting it? That’s what your argument is about other issues. You cannot have it both ways.

Ageism? Is that the new defense catchall that will go along with the sexism charge used by Palin?
Ask any 72 yr old if they believe they should be President and they’ll all tell you they are not. They know their energy levels and their “senior moments”, and furthermore then know friends who have died younger are are slipping into Alzheimers (if not already there).
Quite frankly McCain made this an issue when he chose supremely unqualified Sarah Palin to be his running mate. If he had picked Tom Ridge this would have never been an issue because he would have did what any presidential candidate is supposed to do – choose a running mate who is ready from day one should the need arise.
Joe Biden is 66years old himself and has had two brain surgeries – tomorrow is promised to nobody, not Barack Obama, not Joe Biden, not John McCain, not you or I. John McCain put the country at great risk when he chose Sarah Palin to be his VP.

I’m not worried about McCain being too old to be president. I’m worried about Palin being too young – in experience, critical thinking, education in global matters, knowing how to manage a budget where revenues are shrinking not growing, knowing that the truth matters, etc.

Posted by: anthony | September 14, 2008, 12:23 pm 12:23 pm

The fact is that McCain is 72 years old and has had cancer. His choice for vice-president was extremely important, and he picked someone for political expediency, someone who was not even prepared to meet the media, let alone be president on a moment’s notice. I do not think he put his country first, and I question his judgment. This is a legitimate question we should be asking.

Posted by: Angie | September 14, 2008, 12:23 pm 12:23 pm

John McCain’s age is only an issue in that he chose such an obviously unqualified person to be his running mate. If McCain had considered the security of America people when he chose his vice-presidential nominee, and if he had chosen someone competent to be president, then his age would not be raised as an issue by Democrats. It’s not ageism, it’s reality. For certain situations, you do have to take age into consideration.

McCain has made his age an issue in this campaign by choosing the most unqualified candidate to succeed him should he meet his own demise.
This is why it is an issue and why it has indeed now become a valid one.
Barack, McCain and Biden have been examined over and over again by the American people for almost 2 years during this campaign and have earned their nominations.

He is the oldest candidate running for presidency and he does have a history of skin cancer. John McCain had a responsibility to the American pubic to choose a running mate who was qualified for the position of the highest office in the United States. It was imperative, given his age, and plaguing medical issues that he choose wisely and exercise sound judgment. He’s failed miserably on one of the most important tasks in this presidential election. John McCain has gambled with his VP pick — and while it may have paid off with the conservative, fundamentalist base, America’s future should not be placed inn the hands of a gambler.

Please…I hit my 65th this year and sorry folks, but the skill sets do diminish in a palpable manner. There is nothing ageist in discussing a reality. Carly Fiorina is looking for a new job given how HP bounced her from her old one because of her lack of ethics.
Am I smart, sure, but do I now forget words in the middle of a sentence. Does it take me a day to pull it out of my brain cells? duh? Always a great speller, I have to pick up a dictionary much to often to confirm the spelling on a word. Has that knee sprain from high school, which disappeared for 45 years, just reappear? Do I leave my keys in my car because I was distracted for a moment. Everybody is going to get older or its alternatve…that is the reality and to attempt to pretend that a 72 year old who has undergone heinous torture is not going to feel the impact of that torture in his older years is simply a lie. I feel every whack my body took as a 20-30 year old in my 60′s. McCain is not my pick for President, but those who support him can not deny the actuarial charts on a 72 American male tell us more truth than perhaps some want to hear!

Obama is not a supporter of black liberation theology, please. Even if he was, who cares? Believing in a make-believe god who support only blacks (black liberation theology) or a make-believe god who supports only whites (our founding fathers) is irrelevant to the conversation as long as these beliefs in mythical creations don’t influence policy – separation of church and state remember.
The Palins support the Alaska secessionists. Now we’re talking something that could actually impact the Republic.
Sarah P wants to overturn Roe V Wade and make abortion illegal even in the case of rape and incest. Now were talking about actually taking away rights.
We could pass a law tomorrow defining god as white or black – how does that make any difference? Who cares?
Pass a law that whites can’t marry blacks or vice versa and now you’re talking unconstitutional, just as with the unconstitutional marriage between a man and women “laws”.
Pass a law banning books the governments deems unethical, give tax breaks to the wealthiest 1%, take the country further into debt, define oil policy in secrecy, hire cronies into government, continue to pursue the policies of unprovoked invasions and occupations, and the unitary executive (thank you congress for being such wimps). These are the things that are real, relevant and hurting us all.
Can/will Obama fix all this? I don’t know? Will McCain even try – seems pretty clear he won’t.
Vote the Bush/Cheney/McCain/Palin bums out!!

What’s tragic about this entire discussion is that the majority of those posting seem oblivious to the dire situation we live in today. People are losing their homes, are going bankrupt paying for medical needs (even those with insurance), and those fortunate enough to have jobs have seen any increases outpaced by the rate of inflation these last eight years.
For the remaining weeks of this campaign, the McCain camp will continue to issue falsehoods as though they are facts, and hope they can mislead the American public into another four years of economic tar pits. And when challenged by facts, as McCaskill clearly did in this broadcast, the response from McCain and his Rovites is to repeat the false and hate-based claims louder, then LOUDER. We’re not deaf — we just aren’t listening to you.
How does the truth stand in the face of lies? I implore you, get the facts for yourself. Look into some of the non-partisan detailed analysis (C-Span, League of Women Voters) before making a decision as serious as this. Then share what you know. Don’t assume common sense will prevail. Your future and the future of everyone you love depends on it.

Went to see Obama in Manchester, New Hampshire yesterday. He gave an excellent speech and the crowd there loved him. There is something new and fresh about this candidate, perhaps it’s his intelligence. Say what you want, knowing the guy running for President of the United States is smarter than yourself and most of the people you know is a welcome feeling after eight years of looking askance when the President speaks. I will never forget when Bush was in Paris holding a joint press conference with then President Chirac. The NYTimes head of their Paris office asked Chirac a question in French, whoda thunk? An American speaking French to the French President in France? Well our George, called the reporter out for “showing off”. It fries the brain. Now McCain has introduced us to Mrs. Palin…It fries the brain!

Posted by: Anghiari | September 14, 2008, 12:52 pm 12:52 pm

Oh yes bring out Reagan – the man who ended up raising our taxes 3 times while in office because his trickle down economics didn’t work. Reagan who was in early stages of alzheimer’s before he left office. One good thing about Reagan was that he had a smart VP. I may not have liked George the 1, but he sure is a heck of lot smarter than his son, McCain and Palin put together. McCain’s selling his soul to the devil – Karl Rove.

It’s specious to argue that we don’t have to worry about McCain’s longevity because his mother is still alive. Two months ago we buried my 60-year-old best friend and her 89-year-old mother was at her funeral. Genes are no guarantee.
McCain is 72, he has a history of cancer and his body suffered years of abuse when he was a POW. And the job of POTUS is profoundly stressful, even for someone like Bush who barely phones it in. It’s completely legitimate to question McCain’s health prospects.

Posted by: Tish | September 14, 2008, 1:00 pm 1:00 pm

It is a fact that McCain has had multiple bouts with Melanoma, one of cancers that has a high probability of spreading. He is already showing signs of dementia, confusion and memory lapses. It might be age or equally likely that the cancer has spread to his brain. Sadly, there is a 50-70% chance this man will either lose his faculties or die in the next five years. In a time when this country has so many serious problems, I question the patriotism of his handlers and the republican party. Wrapping themselves in the american flag and chanting USA-USA makes good visual TV, but do they really put this wonderful country ahead of ambition and their party? If McCain wins, Sarah “Appalin’” will be president. Her experience may suffice if one believes her followers, but how can “experience” matter if it is not based on a depth of knowledge on the issues facing us? At least Obama / Biden and other party nominees start out educated and knowledgeable, this woman is proud of her “willful ignorance”. I am a member of the medical community and a woman who lived under Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi and Margeret Thatcher, so will not buy questioning Palin’s qualifications as “Sexism”. As a democracy I realize even idiots get representation, it is indeed a shame that Bush set the bar so low! The McCain campaign is a testimony to mediocrity, this election will indeed show where america’s future wants to be.

‘Alaska Women Reject Palin’ Rally is HUGE!
14
09
2008
I attended the Welcome Home rally for Sarah Palin this morning. Hooo. It was an experience. About a thousand (maybe) hard-core Palin supporters showed up to hear her speak at the new Dena’ina Convention Center in downtown Anchorage.
After shaking it off with a good double shot of espresso, and a brisk walk back to my car, it was time to head to the Alaska Women Reject Palin rally. It was to be held outside on the lawn in front of the Loussac Library in midtown Anchorage. Home made signs were encouraged, and the idea was to make a statement that Sarah Palin does not speak for all Alaska women, or men. I had no idea what to expect.
The rally was organized by a small group of women, talking over coffee. It made me wonder what other things have started with small groups of women talking over coffee. It’s probably an impressive list. These women hatched the plan, printed up flyers, posted them around town, and sent notices to local media outlets. One of those media outlets was KBYR radio, home of Eddie Burke, a long-time uber-conservative Anchorage talk show host. Turns out that Eddie Burke not only announced the rally, but called the people who planned to attend the rally “a bunch of socialist baby-killing maggots”, and read the home phone numbers of the organizers aloud over the air, urging listeners to call and tell them what they thought. The women, of course, received many nasty, harassing and threatening messages.
So, as I jettisoned myself from the jaws of the ‘Drill Baby Drill’ crowd and toward the mystery rally at the library, I felt a bit apprehensive. I’d been disappointed before by the turnout at other rallies. Basically, in Anchorage, if you can get 25 people to show up at an event, it’s a success. So, I thought to myself, if we can actually get 100 people there that aren’t sent by Eddie Burke, we’ll be doing good. A real statement will have been made. I confess, I still had a mental image of 15 demonstrators surrounded by hundreds of menacing “socialist baby-killing maggot” haters.
It’s a good thing I wasn’t tailgating when I saw the crowd in front of the library or I would have ended up in somebody’s trunk. When I got there, about 20 minutes early, the line of sign wavers stretched the full length of the library grounds, along the edge of the road, 6 or 7 people deep! I could hardly find a place to park. I nabbed one of the last spots in the library lot, and as I got out of the car and started walking, people seemed to join in from every direction, carrying signs.
Never, have I seen anything like it in my 17 and a half years living in Anchorage. The organizers had someone walk the rally with a counter, and they clicked off well over 1400 people (not including the 90 counter-demonstrators). This was the biggest political rally ever, in the history of the state. I was absolutely stunned. The second most amazing thing is how many people honked and gave the thumbs up as they drove by. And even those that didn’t honk looked wide-eyed and awe-struck at the huge crowd that was growing by the minute. This just doesn’t happen here.
Then, the infamous Eddie Burke showed up. He tried to talk to the media, and was instantly surrounded by a group of 20 people who started shouting O-BA-MA so loud he couldn’t be heard. Then passing cars started honking in a rhythmic pattern of 3, like the Obama chant, while the crowd cheered, hooted and waved their signs high.
So, if you’ve been doing the math… Yes. The Alaska Women Reject Palin rally was significantly bigger than Palin’s rally that got all the national media coverage! So take heart, sit back, and enjoy the photo gallery. Feel free to spread the pictures around (links are appreciated) to anyone who needs to know that Sarah Palin most definitely does not speak for all Alaskans. The citizens of Alaska, who know her best, have things to say”

Heaven help us all and save us from George Bush, Cheney, McCain and their followers! We need our country back! Can you Republicans just go away for a while then come back after 5 years and see the difference! Peace in the world, revived economy, people being able to purchase a home, vets taken care of..no one’s laughing at community organizers..Respect from the world for America once again..Diplomacy before senseless war/s..A president who will make us proud when he travels overseas..(Bush/McCain are comedy relief on the world stage)..I am tired of people around the world laughing at our choice of president..I laugh too..The world is hoping that we choose Obama because the world senses a different approach to world peace and economic growth. Heaven help us all and save us from the Republicans!

OMG! What was I thinking? I can’t cast my vote and endanger my country. I really would like to see a women in the White House but, not this women. I’m embarrassed saying I’m republican. We can do much better than this. The media has to get some b@lls and report on the McCain/Palin lies and her inexperience.

Age is an issue that is important! We need limits to running for presidency, period. 70 is a good limit to run, 75 a good limit to be in office….. let’s use our heads here. I teach anatomy and physiology….. this is not discrimination it is thinking realistically. I cringe when I think of Ted Stevens and the WV senator in their 90′s, seemingly half senseless, yet we think they can offer a quality service to our leadership…. uh huh… think about your own 90 year old grandpappy.

people who really love America and want to witness real change…keep up the good work and let us keep our eyes on the prize ..this election is not about Obama..its about taking our country back from economic doldrums and turning this “ship around” to economic prosperity and making America the economic giant it once was and bringing back the respect the world once had for our country. Have a good day my fellow Americans regardless of your political allegiances..But my refrain will forever be the same. Heaven help us all and save us from the Republicans! Good day to all.

Source: Mudflats.wordpress.com
This is a really great Alaskan blog site.
Here is a story about how the McCain operatives in Alaska to help Mrs. Palin are changing how Alaskans lived and worked together…
“Please give a big Mudflats welcome to our guest poster for the evening, Les Gara. Les is a Democratic State Representative from Anchorage. He’s also a former Assistant Attorney General (Exxon Valdez Litigation Section), and has been in office since 2003.
I took that photo of Les at the Primary Night festivities at the Egan Convention Center in downtown Anchorage. That’s him being interviewed for a local news cast. He had the best signs, I thought. You can only do so much with red, white, and blue.
Here’s Rep. Gara’s take on McCain’s spin and interference with the bi-partisan “Troopergate” Investigation.
Politicians are good at spin. The McCain camp has brought a whole new level of it to our small state – in what looks like an effort to show they can play the same Karl Rove-like political games that have haunted this country for the last 8 years. I like Governor Palin on a personal level. But I don’t like what the McCain campaign is doing to our state. I don’t like deception. And I don’t like politics as usual.
Alaskans are starting to see evidence of a Karl Rove-like effort to stonewall what started as a non-controversial, bi-partisan ”Troopergate” investigation. A little deception here. A few personal attacks there. And the kind of spin you see at an amusement park tilt-a-whirl station.
This investigation was started by a Republican-dominated Alaska Legislature to look into Governor Palin’s conduct in seeking the termination of a State Trooper, once married to the Governor’s sister, Trooper Michael Wooten. The McCain camp wants to stop it by saying it’s a “democratic” investigation. Apart from facts, and the reputations the McCain folks don’t mind destroying, there’s not a lot standing in the way of this strategy.
Until August 29 “Troopergate” was a small state investigation Governor Palin, and every Republican and Democrat in a Republican-led Legislature had agreed was appropriate. But things changed the day Governor Palin joined the McCain ticket. His handlers went ballistic that the Governor agreed to an investigation they now needed to stop.
I know Senator McCain is now running on a political platform of ”change.” Leave aside how he’ll fight to change what he’s voted to do to this country for the last 8 years. If you ask me, the only thing he’s changed so far is Governor Palin’s position – her decision to cooperate with this once-small investigation.
This is one of those cases where there’s a clear truth. It’s a clear truth – about a bi-partisan investigation – that I hope McCain’s operatives will ultimately fail at spinning into a “partisan” plot against his running mate.
To get their way, and prevent sworn testimony from leaking out on what I suspect was probably a minor breach by Governor Palin, McCain’s operatives have come to Alaska to add invective in a state where people generally get along. They’ve chosen to vilify: 1) one of the state’s most respected public officials, Senator Hollis French; 2) the state’s most respected law enforcement official, Walt Monegan; and 3) a highly respected former DA and Victims Rights advocate a legislative committee voted 12 – 0 to hire to conduct the investigation, Steve Branchflower.
It’s the ghost of Karl Rove. Say something untrue enough times – like that Al Qaida is training with Saddam Hussein’s help – and people will believe it. Not this time. I’m not sure if I mentioned a few important facts.
Did I mention that no one ever attacked the Troopergate investigation by Alaska’s Legislature – started long before Governor Palin was placed on McCain’s ticket – until August 29? That was the day Governor Palin joined the McCain bid for the White House.
Did I mention that before the McCain camp got involved, the Governor stated of the Legislative investigation: “That being the route they choose, so be it. I’m happy to comply, to cooperate.” (KTUU.com, July 24, 2008). She repeatedly stated she’d comply, and that it was the right thing to do.
Did I mention the personal attacks against our local public officials only started after Sen. McCain sent his flacks up to our small state on August 29? They came with a mission to make America believe a Republican-initiated investigation, started with a unanimous committee vote of 8 Republicans and 4 Democrats, was a “partisan” plot. That’s only a tough sell if people know the facts.
Did I mention they now claim the Legislature cannot legally proceed with an investigation into government misconduct (I thought Republicans didn’t like attorneys who made frivolous arguments), and that they are threatening to to go to court to stop it? The Governor’s attorneys started writing those letters on – you guessed it – August 29. Before then they agreed the investigation was proper.
Oh, and what about this. Last week the McCain camp put our Governor in a bizarre position. They told her to file an ethics complaint against herself! Yup, again after her VP nomination. Too weird? What’s behind this move? You guessed it. Lawyers.
To create the legal argument that the Legislature cannot investigate government misconduct, the McCain team has had her file a complaint against herself before something called the State Personnel Board. That’s a 3 member group of Republican Gubernatorial appointees – that, if it started this week, wouldn’t get an investigation done, and reported to the public, until after the November election. Convenient.
Hmmm. The Legislature has announced they’d have their investigation done – if witnesses would cooperate like they were until August 29 – by October 10. I can’t imagine why the McCain camp would prefer an investigation that doesn’t get finished until after November. Any ideas?
So what about the claim that this investigation is some sort of partisan plot against a Republican ticket? A legislative committee of 8 Republicans and 4 democrats asked former Assistant District Attorney Hollis French, a Democrat – to hire a legislative investigator in July. He did. He’s not doing the investigation. So the complaint that he’s a Democrat who supports Barack Obama is, well, weak. He’s a Democrat who supports Barack Obama, who was appointed before Governor Palin was a VP candidate. More importantly, he’s a Senator who has the confidence of a majority Republican Senate.
He once said to the press the results of the investigation are likely to be troubling. He shouldn’t have said that. But the Governor’s said it too. The newspapers have said it. We all know it. The public record already contains evidence that the Department of Public Safety was contacted roughly 20 times by Palin senior staff, and her husband Todd, about firing Trooper Wooten. The Governor has conceded that based on this evidence, the public could conclude the Department could have felt pressure from above to fire Trooper Wooten.
The investigator, Steve Branchflower, is a former DA and Office of Victims Rights head (a job he was appointed to by a Republican Legislature). He’s actually conducting the investigation. Attacking Senator French doesn’t really work if he’s not investigating the case, or making any findings. So the McCain folks have attacked Mr. Branchflower. And they’ve tried to stop him from issuing subpoenas to the witnesses now directed not to talk. Today the McCain folks suffered a setback. A bi-partisan committee of Republicans and Democrats authorized Mr. Branchflower to move ahead to subpoena those witnesses.
And for good measure – the McCain folks are attacking Walt Monegan – the Public Safety Commissioner Governor Palin fired. The Troopergate investigation involves claims that Monegan was fired for not agreeing to fire Trooper Wooten, the Governor’s brother in law involved in a very ugly custody dispute with the Governor’s sister.
I don’t begrudge the Governor for not liking her brother-in-law. I don’t really like him either, from what I’ve read. I do begrudge those who’d attack Commissioner Monegan, a quintessential public servant who’s worked for both Republican and Democratic heads on the state and local level.
These three public servants deserve better. What they’ve received so far, is a little dose of ugly Washington politics in a state where we don’t see that stuff too often.
I stood on the sidelines when this investigation started. When Governor Palin fired Commissioner Monegan, my advice was to end the flap and just hire him back. He does good work. He’s well respected. Unfortunately, my advice sometimes isn’t that good, and the Governor didn’t agree.
Then McCain’s staff of outsiders came to town. And they began to launch personal attacks on people I respect. They started proving that the same old politics that have caused dissatisfaction with Washington insiders these past 8 years are going to be the bread and butter of the McCain campaign.
So – here I am today. I support an Obama presidency because he shares a vision I believe in. I’ve publicly supported him since the race started last year. I also think Governor Palin originally did the right thing in agreeing to take some small lumps by proceeding with a legislative investigation Republicans and Democrats, and much of the public asked for.
But unfortunately Alaska is the bull’s eye in a national presidential race today. When told by the McCain folks that she needed to change her position, she did, as a loyal running mate. I understand that.
As an Alaskan I’m not really angry at our Governor for this mess. I do blame John McCain for the ugliness he’s brought to our state this week. His folks have come to my small state to attack my friends, and people I respect, for political gain. In my book, that’s not OK. We all mess up time to time. But this crosses the line.
In small states, like small towns, people who act like the McCain folks apologize. Until that happens, I’ll keep defending 3 public servants who deserve better.”

McCain is old and Palin makes me extremely nervous. Palin is obviously unqualified to be president.

It’s so funny to see these neocons trying so hard to convince the grown-ups. Do you really think, that if you stay true to the party, one day you too, will be an oil millionaire? Guess what – ain’t gonna happen! Keep voting neocon, and your precious little white grandbabies will be paid $3 a day to make shoes for the massive Indian middle class!
9/11 happened on the Republican watch! Never forget!

Yes, Obama has smoked for a long time. Not long enough to make cancer a likely prospect, though. BUT, he picked an extremely experienced VP, one specifically experienced in foreign policy, one that is definitely ready on day one. One who knows what the Bush doctrine is, among other things! Obama had the sense of responsibility to pick an experienced VP who is not superficially charismatic. McCain picked a POLITICALLY CONVENIENT VP, convenient in an environment where electing a president seems to be no longer different from electing the American idol, and does not give a damn about what happens to the country if the statistically very probable thing happens (the chances calculated above do not take into account previous history with potetially lethal cancer, so actually the likelyhood of something happening to him is far higher). This woman (mind you, I am a woman and a feminist to boot) has not been abroad (Ireland and Iraq turned out to be lies, so there remains that dinner with soldiers in Kuwait), does not even know what the Bush doctrine is though the country has suffered through its consequences for five years now, has a “view” of the remotest and most uninhabited part of Russia (and the chutzpah to call this part of her foreign affairs experience!!!) and some peaople seriously want to trust her with the nuclear button.

His age would not be a focus issue until he made it such. If he had chosen a fully capable running mate, it would have been ageism to bring up his advanced age. His health would and should be an issue because the chances of someone getting a recurrance of malignant melanoma when they have had it 4 times previously is almost a given. He will get it again and there is a good chance it will be within the next 4 years putting someone who is has ridden a toy choo choo train as the conductor of the worlds most advanced and largest train with many peoples lives at stake. Someone who by her own accounts never blinks before responding in her hubris of her minor accomplishments.
Palin is not even remotely qualified and that is what makes his age, his judgement and his health a HUGE campaign issue.

He is too old and too fragile. People pretend not to notice how physically weak and somewhat feeble he is. So if you want Palin for President vote McCain and God Bless you.

John McCain smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day for 25 years, he has high cholesterol, arthritis, kidney issues, he takes 6 different medications a day for various ailments, including ambien, which reports are abounding about the potential risks of disorientation, confusion, etc. He has had 4 bouts of cancer which can reoccur at any time. He did release his medical records – over 1000 pages- to a small, invited group who were only allowed to view them for 3 hours and not record them in any way. In that short time much was learned, including all the ailments I describe above. But, what else is hidden in there? What is the guy hiding? We now know he had some kind of melanoma surgery as recently as February of this year, that kept him off the campaign trail for days – but his campaign won’t tell us what happened. Do we really want a president incapacited for days at a time, and leave the country in the hands of an imbecile? It’s not sexist to question Sarah Palin’s viability for the most powerful job in the world when she repeatedly lies about the little qualifications she has to begin with. I’m terrified about these two. His age and frailty and her stupidity are not even at the top of the list, but they are nonetheless relevant and important issues to discuss.

Posted by: jh1721 | September 14, 2008, 1:35 pm 1:35 pm

Come on already, McCain is too old, the only change he is going to make is his diapers when he goes tinkle. He looks and sounds way too old, to old to know how to work a computer. Drop dead logic, you don’t put anyone in office of the President who doesn’t know how to work a computer and has one foot in the grave. Then what does he do for his first decision for Vips, picks an imbicile like the current President.
Did anyone see her. It was better said this way by Michael Seitzman;
She said “nucular.” Twice.
I realized three things tonight. For one, if you are a McCain/Palin/Bush voter, you and I do not have a difference of opinion. We have a difference in brain power. Two, she really is as ignorant as I feared. And, three, she really is kinda hot. Basically, I want to have sex with her on my Barack Obama sheets while my wife reads aloud from the Constitution. (My wife is cool with this if I promise to “first wipe off Palin’s tranny makeup.” I married well.)

I only care about one thing, MCCAIN IS GOING TO START THE DRAFT, HE MOST CERTAINLY IS!
THEN HE’LL BORROW MORE AND MORE MONEY FROM CHINA FOR HIS WARS WITH IRAN AND RUSSIA!
Russia, in case you don’t know, is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, OIL!
They also have more nuclear weapons than we and our allies put together.
McCain, JUST CAUSE RANDY ONE OF YOUR MILLIONS OF LOBBYISTS FOR YOUR CAMPAIGN, MAKES MILLIONS FROM LOBBYING FOR GEORGIA, DOESN’T MEAN THE U.S. NEEDS TO GO TO WAR WITH RUSSIA, FOR CRIMANY SAKES.
MCCAIN WILL DRAFT WOMEN TOO, HE’LL HAVE TO! Not for combat, but back your bags kids, you are goners!
McCain, what are you going to do about the economy? I’ll take Clinton any day, and I couldn’t stand him, BUT, I did really well in the 90′s and so did everyone I know!
Palin is the American Taliban, and she will legislate us back into the stone age.
If Bush hadn’t ruined my 401k, I’d try and move to Canada.
INSANITY IS: DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER, AND EXPECTING A DIFFERENT RESULT! Even my dog knows, that if he keeps putting his hand down a gopher hole, it’s gets bitten!
You fools will vote for McCain, and wonder why you’re all living under freeway overpasses, right when he wants you. Uneducated, unemployed and homeless.
Perfect electorate! The kind that have no choice and no address so they can vote!
Why did so many women show up to PROTEST PALIN IN ANCHORAGE? COULD BE, SHE ISN’T A POPULAR AS THEY SAY, hhmmmmm!
YOU’RE NOT DRAFTING MY KIDS MCCAIN!

Very nice try from Carly Fiorina but sorry lady, you didn’t score any points with the charge of ageism! His age is an issue because he picked a political neophyte to be his running mate and this country is in terrible trouble and we can’t afford to hope for the best with an airhead like Sarah Palin, who has already demonstrated in one interview, that she doesn’t grasp the gravity of the issues facing us and is not equipped to handle the job, on day one or any other damn day, in my opinion.

What is all this stuff about Obama smoking? Have you all forgotten that the GOP guy smoked heavily for decades??? Remember the video of him smoking in the hospital bed after his release?
Don’t think that could still have an effect? Yeah, his mom has lived a long time, but neither his dad nor his dad’s dad made it to 73. Who says he’s got his mom’s longevity genes?
His age is an issue, period, especially with Palin as his pick.

Thank you, Claire McCaskill, for “telling it like it is”!!! McCain is 72 y/o cancer survivor who has to have frequent checkups to monitor his condition. We don’t need a repeat of the last term of the Reagan presidency where you have the first lady putting words in the president,s mouth. McCain, at his current state of health, is a scarry enough thought, but a Mccain impaired by poor health?? The lobbyists would run wild. Lord help us!
BTW, Claire would have been a much better choice for VP. Obama blew it on VP choice.

Karl Rove’s “J’accusism” is a belligerent bully-tactic to oppress free discussion. There’s only seven words that are out of bounds for political media:
If George Carlin could say it, or ask it, so can journalists.
The Truth is always a sin for Republicans

Apparently Claire McCasill needs to take a comprehensive look at herself before she worries about John McCain.
The Senator from Missouri has been working hard since the primary to position herself for an Obama appointment.
But, keep up the senior slams, McCaskill.
Voters over 50 represent one of the largest blocs of conservative voters in the country.
Voters over 50 are taking note of your attempts to attack their age as a weakness rather than view it as a strength, or “ageism.”
And, most importantly, voters over 50 rank among the highest in actual participation in elections.
We vote, Claire.
And, we heard your attacks on age loud and clear.
Anybody But Obama…

They can not attack other thing to McCain.
Now, they try to attack Palin.
They try so hard to bring Palin to the court regarding to her former bro-inlaw.
Why Obama can get away from Rezko case last time?
I heard they were going to ask him to stand in the court and all the tv stations would air it.
It’s all vanished.
Just like that!

========================
Malcom X? Where did you get that lie from? Oh, I forgot that is what Chirstians in today’s world do best.
I can’t wait to see what Jesus has in store for the false prophets stealing his identity and ruining his credit.
Black theology, kill a God? Wow, how far would you go?
McCain’s age and health is very important to this race, he wants to be the President of the USA, a public office of the highest and you all complain about tha?
It is amazing that the Republicans would select a dog to run the country as long as it is not the black man. Give me a break.
Your convention was full of white people, truly the ones you will serve and forget about the rest of the country, just serve the whites with money. Is this white theology?
No one is blind, you bigots! racist bigots at that.

Posted by: Angel | September 14, 2008, 1:43 pm 1:43 pm

Obama SMOKED, as in past tense, thankfully he quit in February!
ALSO, AREN’T YOU PEOPLE A LITTLE ANGRY THAT CINDY MCCAINS OUTFIT, SHE WORE FOR THE CONVENTION, COST OVER $300,000, THAT’S MORE THAN A LO9T OF PEOPLES HOMES COST, HOMES THAT ARE BEING FORECLOSED ON!
Talk about an out-of-touch elitist!! She spends $750,000 in a month. yes, it’s her money, but there are a lot of people who rely on food banks to feed their families, and this womans outfit cost more than a house!
McCain has a 12% chance of living for the NEXT FOUR YEARS!! 12% CHANCE, THAT MEANS YOU’RE VOTING FOR PALIN FOR PRESIDENT, OH REALLY!
MCCAIN IS 72, and when he turned 71 yrs old, he and Bush were celebrating his b-day, while people were dying in new Orleans from Katrina. McCain and Bush did nada, zip, zilch. McCain couldn’t have cared less, because really, most were black, and well, they don’t count, they’re not nearly as American as white people with a lot of money!

Posted by: andreaD | September 14, 2008, 1:44 pm 1:44 pm

You convention was full of white people,……
posted by Angel.
Yeah,,,because those black people almost 90% support Obama.
Think about it!

The problem Republicans have is that they can’t remember which lie they told most recently, then they get mad at the media for reminding everyone.

Posted by: blogofacowboy | September 14, 2008, 1:49 pm 1:49 pm

According to US actuarial tables, a 72-year-old man has about a 14-16% chance of dying in the next four years. This does not factor in previous melanomas or whether the person has already outlived their father and grandfather.
Of course, there are odds of stroke, dementia and other mental impairment that would arise over the next four years.
So, those of you who love Governor Palin, rejoice! There is a 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 chance she will be acting President, should McCain win, before the next Presidential election.

Posted by: doc | September 14, 2008, 1:49 pm 1:49 pm

Those Republicans always get a bad hand dealt. Poor Sarah is the VICTIM of sexism; and now sad John is the VICTIM of ageism. Why can’t they catch a break?
I’m surprised they don’t try to run Reagan again. Then they could cry deadism.
John McCain’s cognitive faculties are clearly eroding. Just compare his 2000 campaign to his 2008. He’s confused, slow, and defensive.

Posted by: Will | September 14, 2008, 1:53 pm 1:53 pm

The American People have the right to ask for medical records for our candidates – including tests for dementia – at whatever age. For the Republicans to call this ageism is simply a lie. LIE. LIE. LIE. It is time to fish or cut bait with the medical records, McCain.

Posted by: Doctor | September 14, 2008, 1:53 pm 1:53 pm

Amazing to see the issue of “ageism” bought up, and have people take offense. It shouldn’t be offensive…IT’S JUST A FACT!Do you look at him and deny the guy is old? What’s the point? I would prefer to talk about issues each candidate has, as opposed to gender or age, myself. It’s petty and off the point.Since Sen. McCain has decided NOT to make this about issues(his campaign spokesmans words)then you get what you get. When you want to start focusing on the realities of the needs of this country, then I say, good for you. Let’s do that! In the mean time, your guy John and his VP choice are left with outright lying, repeatedly, everyday..because they CAN’T run on issues. He has no honor left, no integrity, and that’s really a shame.Journalists…do your job! American people deserve to know the truth!Otherwise,if you condon this despicable behaviour…you’re guilty too!

RONALD REAGAN, WHO RAISED PAYROLL TAXES 3 TIMES, WAS LOSING IT, TOWARDS THE END, DEMENTIA. HE COULDN’T REMEMBER, WHEN HE WAS ON TRIAL FOR IRAN CONTRA, do any of you remember that.
McCain of 2000, wouldn’t vote for this McCain, ever!
I WAS a McCain supporter, until he picked Palin.

John McCain has been raising his age for months, using the Regan example of dampening the issue by using humor. He is constantly telling us how old he is, hoping that we will become used to it. Well Senator, now we are paying attention. Had you selected someone who is competent to be President as your running mate it would be one thing. But let’s face it, you selected someone who is not competent to serve in that role.

It must be okay to discuss John McCain’s age – NOT because age interferes with Senator McCain’s intellectual functioning (studies have shown that such functions DO slow down with age, but we should discard these out of a sense of basic decency), but because the combination of his age and his earlier conditions make him vulnerable AND make his VP pick that much more important.
Besides, who among us has said we shouldn’t discuss Senator Obama’s race?
IN FACT, what topic has been discussed MORE THAN Senator Obama’s race during this campaign.
AND, posts by our Nazi and KKK friends aside, who among us believes that race should be a factor in determining who should be president?

To those that are so concerned about McCain’s age and health, let’s just say, death has no age. We are all on the list to pass on. Not everyone dies of an illness they suffer from. Does a female in office threaten anyone or prove a threat to this country? What makes people think that men are ‘suppose’ to be the leader’s of America? Do they have more smart’s than women? Don’t think so.Get over it..just the beginning of history to change. Hillary also would have done good..I don’t vote by party..the person tells me all. So far, men for many years have not proven very much in office or even in congress. If so, why is this country disliked world wide and why are we in the worse position concerning ALL the issues we face..pure distrust of the government officials going way back. Officials work for us, voted in office and paid by us..yet they do what concerns them not us. Time for big change. Plus, all this BS of “What I will do for this country when I am President”…save your breath and just do it. Promises are soon forgotten..”he said she said..ok..let’s take a break and talk about it another time.” Obama claims one thing he learned in the past 19 months that people are dealing with trials and tribulations. He learned? Where was he before the 19 months? Must have been in the closet with Biden who seems to be hidden from the public now. Let’s check him out since he has been in government and see if he has been a good ‘old man’.

I am a democrat/liberal, if you will, and I have a deep abiding faith in my Father in Heaven who sent Jesus to us.
I pray constantly that we are freed from the chains of the oppresive republican ‘reign of terror’ that is George W Bush and the gangsters of his party. They perpetrated a war, maybe even set up an event that led them to declare war, that will be revealed soon enough. At any rate they have committed so many sins against this nation that it is beyond me how you can keep mouthing off the religious crap that keeps coming forth in support of an administration that is, in my humble opinion, the work of the devil. I pray continuously and fervently that God bring all the TRUTH to light and destroy the devils work and set us truly free from the republican gangsters and their lies.

Black Liberation theology is christian whereas Malcol X was Muslim. There is no connection between the two. Deliberately mixing the two in order mislead and distort facts has become a GOP staple. For a party that prides itself of being guided by christain principles (religious right) it is a shame at the depths they will go to lie. What happened to GOP’s morality? McCain having chosen the inexperienced Palin as VP makes his own age more relevant.

Posted by: JAB | September 14, 2008, 2:17 pm 2:17 pm

I repeat what others have stated – the only reason that John McCain’s age has become so important is his pick of Palin as VP. Let us forget for one moment that all of the McCain campaign’s cornerstone issues – including Palin’s so-called Maverick status have been vetted as either stretching the truth or downright lies. Let us assume all were true. Palin is as provincial as they come and this is not a time for provincial leaders. We have had 8 years of that and with a president who had much more so-called “executive” experience than Palin has. We need a person with cross-cultural experience – who respects different cultures and is comfortable in relating to world leaders even when their viewpoints clash. Provincialism cannot be overcome in a week or two of cramming with Rove or whoever else at the helm. It is wonderful to come from small town America – but to have traveled extensively in America and abroad in order to morph towards a heightened perspective which qualifies one for the highest office in the US.

As a republincan I am sick and tired of the McCain palying the sexism card, the agesism cards, my god we republincans are becomeing a joke and talk about whiners. The fact is that McCain’s age should be a huge concern to all Americans, period. He has had many bout with canncer and Milonoma is a very serious form of cancer. I for one belive that the americans have the right to know. He needs to make available his medical records no just for the few, but for all. What is he so worry about??? What I worry is that may be something more and Plain may be a heart a way from being the next president, now thats a scary scenario. Look I am an elderly person and it does not bother me if someone whants to now what in my medicl record. The McCain is the desparation campaing now!!! His polls numbers are falling. Palin interview showed that shes is not ready and it was a disaster to say the least..Folks this is reality. We have to me carefull who we end up with. I belive that if McCain had a wining campaing this kind of negativity will no paly a role, the reality is that McCain is loosing and this is his last hope. Take it from a republincan Americans are tired of..BUSH, CHANEY AND Karl Rove. Republincans need to start acting like adults and not like teens jumping up and down for this Palin.

Btw, who the hell has a thousand page medical record? As a nurse, I can tell you the thicker the patient’s record, the sicker the patient.

His mother is a bean pole and his father was chunky just like McCain. His dad died a long time ago. Deal with that peice of information.

John McCain says we should put our country first.
Well I think if John McCain was putting his country first, he would have picked a better prepared VP to take over in the event something happens to him.

I agree 100%. We republicans have lost big time. Lets face it we dont have a clear agenda. We made this race into a personality contest, clearly no vision. We are not goiing to win this won, period. What we need to work on is on the next election 2012. Obama will have a huge task and we will have a better candidate in 2012..Thiis time around were are stuck with McCain and frankly Plain is turning out to be a major joke. Talk about drama. She was not vette at all for this position sad but true. I will also agree on the fact that she was terribel in her recent interview. Lets race money for our local candidates and get ready for 2012.

It is a fair question to ask. The Presidency ages people. Look at how young Bush and Clinton looked before they took office and how much they aged in 8 years.
Especially given McCain’s age, I thought he would pick a competent VP.
He has melanoma, one of the deadliest cancers out there.

First of all isn’t it time for the media to do their job and say the truth? Palin is utterly unqualified to be vp, she didn’t even know what a vp did 3 weeks ago. She knows nothing zero zip nada about foreign policy or national security (despite seeing russia on a clear day from her home) or the economy of the nation (google her fanny and freddy comments for proof.) She even outsourced some of her responsibilities as mayor of the 5000+ populated town of Wasilla. She is all about pushing a radical right wing born again agenda (google assembly of god.) McCain is putting his campaign first. He’s proven he’d rather win an election than do what’s right for this country. He’s sold his soul to Karl Rove and the religious right.

I have to agree with the Navy afficer. I trully belive that we lost this election for just concentrating on personalities and not having a true vision. We need to re-group and work hard for 2012. McCain’s age is not a “card” to be played in some “game”, it is a fact.
It is a a fact that he has suffered from melanoma – a potentially lethal type of skin cancer.
Voters should know about that history, and then make their own decision as to its relevance.
=================================
John McCain’s History of Skin Cancer in summary:
Sen. John McCain has already had four (4) MALIGNANT melanomas surgically removed since 1993. The last melanoma discovered and removed was in 2000, so eight (8) years ago.
Little more than a month ago, he had a spot removed from his face (July 28th, 2008) during a routine checkup by a doctor in Phoenix. The spot was NOT malignant.
=====================================
So, is there something voters should be concerned about here?
Hard to say. There is an excellent article on the website “skincancerconnection.com” that discusses the potential risks of melanoma.
The authors point out that “The five (5) year survival rate of this stage melanoma [the stage at which McCain’s tumors were removed}is about 80%”.
However, they also point out that “…melanoma is deadly because it can reappear later WITHOUT ANY WARNING on any internal organ”
=================================
So, here we are, eight years after the last malignant tumor was removed. There is an 80% survival rate after five years, but “…melanoma is deadly because it can reappear later WITHOUT ANY WARNING on any internal organ”.
======================================
Frankly, I have not idea if McCain’s past history of skin cancer should be a concern. You tell me.

Given Captain McCain’s previous cancer, not to mention his prior deteriorated medical condition – that’s the freaking elephant in the tea room. Moreover, when is this man going to release his mental health records as it is obvious he is a probable post traumatic stress syndrone survivor. Then there is the other discussion about the suitability of the rookie Alaska governor to take his place. What a nightmare this man proposes to leave the nation should McCain-Palin succeed in November!
PS And Fiorina raises the ageism issue? She has phony written all over her face. Old guys like McCain would have been the first out the door when she bragged about “right sizing,” i.e. firing thousands of dedicated workers at Hewlitt-Packard.

Wow! There is a lot of off topic blatant hatred in this comments section.
John McCain is suffering from afflictions common with old age. Being a POW does some nasty things to a persons psyche. He’s a true hero for serving as long as he has. However it’s obvious he does not past muster for POTUS.
It is a serious issues that he could pass away, God bless his soul, during his presidency. This is in an off itself not a huge issue. We would have a wonderful memorial for him and recall how much good he did for our country.
The issue with him passing away is that the torch automatically gets passed to a dim witted, barbie doll beauty queen, failed parent, narcissistic, 6 colleges in 5 years, hardly graduated manipulator.
Now I’m sure Palin has her good points but lets be honest here. She is not presidential material. She should not be given a free pass like this.
Unfortunately people cheer her every word. Who cares if the facts of that matter are that Obama will reduce taxes for 85% of us by ~$2,000 and raise it on the top 5% by $19,000 where as McCain would raise it by $1,400 on the 85% poorest amongst us and credit back $(I can’t remember the figure, I want to say $135,000 but might be wrong) to the richest amongst us. yes Palin and McCain lie about Obamas tax plan and say they will reduce taxes.
McCains own economic advisor said they will have to raise taxes. When asked why they will raise them after saying they wont he replied with something along the lines of, “well of course we’ll have to raise taxes,… but we can’t dilute the brand”.
I’ve spoken with my father and brother about politics. Both are staunch republicans. I love them both ery much but let me give you some facts about them,
neither were stellar students,
neither went to college,
when pressed on the views neither could give specific instances,
both resort to wishful thinking,
both shout party mantras but don’t understand the history or have accurate information.
At this point I believe the republicans are purposefully lying to manipulate those among us to busy to gather the facts, unable to think for themselves, or easily manipulated.
And just for the record. Our founding fathers were liberals.
And Adam Smith who described the invisible hand and efficient markets, also describe moral responsibility because he recognized….
WE ARE NOT INDEPENDENT INDIVIDUALS,
WE ARE AUTONOMOUS INDIVIDUALS IN HIGHLY COMPLEX SOCIAL NETWORKS.
Republicans,
the only people who don’t want to participate in government, who don’t want to pay taxes for the good of the group, are the rich who steal the shirt of your back and wipe their asses with them. That would be McCain.
I’m liberal, duh.
But I don’t want to pay taxes for BS reasons. I agree completely. But I’ll gladly pay taxes to provide for firefighters and a police force. I’ll gladly pay taxes so your child can get government backed student loans and be a smarter and better person than you are. I’ll gladly pay taxes to field a military.
PS The military is liberal. The last thing they want is someone who won’t pick up a rifle themselves telling them where to go fight. I’m a veteran. Our lives are not your to throw away on a whim. Lead us or leave us alone.
I apologize for the rant but hopefully I have touched some hearts, and even better hopefully some minds.
Only 24% of Americans read the news. Get out there. Honor our first amendment right and see whats going on in this group of our. leave wishful thinking to the children and be a responsible adult. Educate yourself on the facts behind the issues. We have enough experts to clearly show where we need to head at this point.
John McCain and Barbie ain’t it.

Let’s see: I’m black, supported John McCain during his first run for the WH. I voted republican at the last election and will vote democratic this time around. It seems everyone has lost any common sense this election season. John McCain is an American hero and a great man. But the challenges facing this country are so dire that voting for him at this time would be a great diservice to the country. To me it’s simple. His age is less of an issue for me than his medical history. He’s at an increase chance of a currence within the first ten years and he’s not beyond that time table yet. Regardless your political position or social views I find it disturbing that most people are not thinking more about this. That is in addition to us fighting two wars and an economy in crisis. I like Sarah Palin, she’s obiously a politician and people obviously are attracted to her persona. But can anyone really look me in the eye and tell me she’s ready to lead us through two wars and this economy? As I understand it the people who are against Obama are the “bubba voters”. These are the people who stand to gain the most from Obama’s policies. Can anyone tell me why anyone would choose to vote against their personal interst. I simply don’t get it. If anyone can answer this question honestly I’m open to hear it.

John “Country First” McCain’s age, frequent cancers and, at times, apparent confusion and forgetfulness, are very much issues the voters have to address. All the more so, given his failure to select a running mate who is qualified and prepared to do anything without a teleprompter and a Steve Schmidt script.

@Lee:
“”"
I heard yesterday on CNN that their staff doctor was provided with 1,000 pages of doctor’s health records from John McCain, and that everything looked good..
“”"
Then you need to clean your ears. They were “allowed” to look through the 1000 pages of medical records ONLY for 3 hours, with no photocopies, no internet, no communications at all with the outside world.
1000 pages, 3 hours. And in that time, they have raised enough questions, such as the very high probability of McCain dying in office from a reoccurence of his melanoma. Imagine what they would have found if McCain had *actually* released his medical records.
It was a sham; what does McCain have to hide? Simple fact: McCain is far too old to run for president: he said so himself, before he flip-flopped once again.

John McCain is not too old to be President. But is too old and has too many health issues to pick an inexperienced running mate whose track record of adminstration is shaky and experience in foreign affairs is nonexistent. This during a war that up until the Palin selection was routinely trotted out as a reason to question Barack Obama’s experience. The choice of Vice President this year is every bit as important as the choice in 1944. Thank God we got Harry Truman. And Sarah Palin, you’re no Harry Truman.

Obama should get back to his central message of getting everyone to work together. These negative attacks by him and his surrogates are wrecking his campaign – and America. His original message was up lifting. Let get back to that.
I am extremely disappointed in the tone of the campaign. I thought once the creepy Clintons were out of the race the tone would improve. That brings one to the notion that having the creepy Clinton caravan as part of your team is just a way to remind the 3/4s of America that dislike the Clintons that there may be some creepy Clinton face in the Obama government.
The creepy Clinton oddities argue that it is not 3/4s – add it up – all of the republicans and half of the democrats. A large part of Obamas appeal was an anti-Hillary vote.

Equality is a lie…A myth to appease the masses. Simply look around and you will see the lie for what it is! There are those with power, those with the strength and will to lead. And there are those meant to follow—those incapable of anything but servitude and a meager, worthless existence.
“Equality is a perversion of the natural order!…It binds the strong to the weak. They [the weak] become anchors that drag the exceptional down to mediocrity. Individuals destined and deserving of greatness have it denied them. They [the strong] suffer for the sake of keeping them even with their inferiors.
“Equality is a chain, like obedience. Like fear or uncertainty or self doubt.”

because he’s not going to be president

Posted by: Dream on Republiklans | September 14, 2008, 3:21 pm 3:21 pm

You are all missing central point. A President can ALWAYS die in office. The REAL issue here is that Obama picked Biden, who could become the president Day 1. Some might not agree with Biden, on issues, but you’d have to be in deep denial if you don’t think he’s up to the task.
Palin is still a HUGE unknown. She appeals mainly to Religious Conservatives and a few disaffected Hillary supporters. From what I’ve seen and read, she is WAY out of her league.
As to all the smears against Obama, people are simply channeling their fears and ignorance.

McCain’s age and health are an issue now that he’s selected Palin for his running mate. If he had made a sensible decision — for governing, not just in an attempt to win the election — his age and health would not be that much of a problem. He has brought this on himself. Everyone is thinking about it. McCaskill was just being straight.

Remember how Bush wanted to go to war in Iraq to complete what his father had started in the first gulf war? Well, read this weeks’ New Yorker. McCain wants to be president so he can vindicate his father, whose advice about winning the Viet Nam war was not followed.

Posted by: GrannyNerd | September 14, 2008, 3:24 pm 3:24 pm

Age would not be an issue if there is reason not to make it one. but Lord! McCain can’t remember that his main cheerleader got earmarks, he can’t distinguish shiites from sunnis, he can’t remember boarders. These are reasons for us to be concerned.

Posted by: Angela King | September 14, 2008, 3:26 pm 3:26 pm

If he’s in such great shape for 72, why won’t he release his medical records to the public? And what was the biopsy of the mole removed a few months ago? I noticed there’s been no mention of that. His age is relevant or have we forgotten Ronald Reagan’s Alzheimer’s Disease? It’s well documented that he began experiencing symptoms while still in office. Melanoma is a hideous disease. Once it has spread, there is no cure. They removed lymph nodes from McCain’s neck–that’s why the left side of his face stays swollen. It’s not ageism-it’s realism.

Posted by: April Campbell | September 14, 2008, 3:27 pm 3:27 pm

8 years have passed, (95 of melanoma return in 10 years, and his was one of the worst. The Repugs are counting on him hitting the dirt nose first and having Palin in the top seat, then they will have it their way as she will do what they say and what they have taught her, banned books, crazy religion,no choice, no birth control got to have those babies to grow up and fight wars, got to have millions of poor to work and support big government, how many blacks are in top government, how many did you see at the RNC? they are racists of the worst kind, think of the Obama Waffles they let those two guys sell, dirt, scum of the land to do that.

Posted by: h lash | September 14, 2008, 3:33 pm 3:33 pm

h lash, women are known to live longer then men. Family age and history doesn’t matter when the person in question already has a serious history. If we wanted to compare history, his mother would need to have Maelanoma 4 times! think about it! OK, Obama Obama was a smoker. He’s also a proven athlete! OK, Biden Jr. was a lobbyist.. How does that compare to McCain having 7 big time corporate lobbyist (some represent Fannie & Freddie) running his campaig?

There is something fundamentally rotten at the core of the republican party when they can celebrate the elevation of a candidate to run for our highest office that is so unqualified as to be laughable. Over and over again they say the opposite of what they truly believe – in this case, “country first” when in fact this choice shows that republicans, and John McCain, care nothing for our country.
Republican’s have always pulled whatever slimy stunt they deemed necessary to win an election, and congratulate themselves on their gutter politics. But with Sarah Palin, they and John McCain, have hit an all time low. It is despicable and disheartening to think our great democracy is being threated by people with no love for our country. If republican’s had any shame, or patriotism, they would hang their heads and weep.

Posted by: angry lefty | September 14, 2008, 3:48 pm 3:48 pm

I only have one question for all those that say age is not an issue:
If McCain was 47 and Obama 72, would you not question his age, especially if Obama had chosen a political neophyte? I think we all know the answer to that question.
Is it too much to expect the Commander-in-Chief to be in good health, mentally and physically and to be, gasp, intelligent and well-versed in foreign policy, the economy and national security.
It’s frightening how far down the rabbit hole this nation has climbed. I don’t want to be friends with my politicians, I want them to be smart and critical thinkers and curious about what’s going on with the world. We all deserve that, hell the world deserves it too.

Posted by: Justice Is A Cheap Whore | September 14, 2008, 3:49 pm 3:49 pm

Clearly McCain is too frail for the job. Consider what he’ll be like in 3 years.
One thing is certain: if McCain/Palin win, there is no hope whatsoever that Hillary will ever be president. As the incumbent, Palin will have the upper hand in experience. Hillary will have a split party and Obama supporters who won’t vote for her.

Posted by: Chris | September 14, 2008, 3:53 pm 3:53 pm

Idiots like Stephanopolis and McCaskil should continue to blast Palin and McCain as they have in the past. Every derogatory remark helps the McCain popularity. Since the Dems have no platform, their only plan is to criticize McCain which increases McCains popularity.
Remember this is the same press especially Stephanopolis that claimed Hillary had a 60% lead and could not be stopped; enough for his credibility.
How much better can it be when Dems like David Letterman make jokes about family values. He has a great record as a father and should be a role model for the Democrats.
Comments by Sandra and Monet above show what a bunch of idiots the Democrats have recruitted.
Stephanopolis, Oberman and Charles Gipson are all lumped togeter and should be taken of the air. They do not relate with the majority of Americans.

Posted by: Hugh | September 14, 2008, 3:53 pm 3:53 pm

According to US actuarial tables, a 72-year-old man has about a 14-16% chance of dying in the next four years. This does not factor in previous melanomas or whether the person has already outlived their father and grandfather.
Of course, there are odds of stroke, dementia and other mental impairment that would arise over the next four years.
So, those of you who love Governor Palin, rejoice! There is a 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 chance she will be acting President, should McCain win, before the next Presidential election.

jk, obama also has ties to the whole fannie&freddie thing,to said he does not is like saying joe biden represents the working class.he and his son are washington insiders.how can obama stay on his message of change if these are the moves he makes. to say obama is not ready to be president is a understatement

Posted by: h lash | September 14, 2008, 3:57 pm 3:57 pm

I agree with jk…
I’m a 70 year old Ohio republican too. I like John McCain but his VP pick worries me. I watched her interview and she didn’t strike me as being ready on day one.
I’m just as active as John McCain is. I just retired from an executive management position and I can’t see my self being able to take on the presidency.
I agree that if John McCain was really putting his Country First, he would of picked a qualified VP.
I too am sorry to say… I think John McCain put his campaign first and his country 2nd.
I’m back on the fence and leaning towards Obama.

Posted by: Earl | September 14, 2008, 3:58 pm 3:58 pm

The reason that John McCain has thousands of pages of medical records is that he has had lots of medical treatment over the years.
The most likely reason that Barack Obama has released only a paragraph is because he has nothing significant in his medical record and not because of some conspiracy to keep a secret illness, well, secret.
As a physician with more than 3 decades of experience I have treated many 47-year old men who have smoked for a long time. Some have developed emphysema and heart disease. A few have developed lung cancer. But most have not. They can greatly reduce or even eliminate their risk of developing these serious health problems by quitting when they are relatively young, something Obama has done. It’s also a testament to his willpower and being able to handle stress that he has quit in the midst of such a grueling campaign. How many smokers could say the same thing?
Watching him play basketball has convinced me that he has no significant lung or heart problems. In the absence of him having a problem there is no reason for him to have undergone lung or heart testing. So no testing, no medical reports and so nothing to disclose. And I doubt there will be a public demand that he undergo pulmonary function tests or a cardiac stress test either.
Even if Sen. Obama continued to smoke he has a 5% chance of dying in the next 4 years, which needs to be contrasted with Sen. McCain’s 20% chance. The reality is that he is a 72-year old man with a lot of serious medical problems.
While the media is largely focused on the celebrity aspect of the Palin pick (pit bulls, hockey moms, and pigs with lipstick) and the Obama campaign wants to stick to McCain, I’m very concerned that in this election we may be actually voting for Sarah Palin for president. In a very real sense there are two people at the top of the Republican ticket. As a result, the focus on McCain’s age and medical status is not ageism, any more than the focus on Palin’s fitness to occupy the Oval Office is sexism. It is our duty as American citizens to carefully pick the leader of the free world.
Fulfilling that duty means not turning a blind eye to such important matters.

Posted by: Doctor John | September 14, 2008, 3:59 pm 3:59 pm

Earl: his VP pick confounds logic. If he chooses Romney or someone else then he wins. I’m not sure I’ll go Obama, but I can’t see myself voting for McCain with Palin on the ticket.

Posted by: 1percenter | September 14, 2008, 4:00 pm 4:00 pm

I don’t hate John McCain, but his reckless choice of such an inexperienced running mate who just got her passport last year and knows virtually nothing about the national and international affairs is beyond comprehension. Especially for a 72-year-old man, with a history of cancer, taking on one of the most stressful jobs in the world. (I would have the same criticism of Obama if he made the same choice…and don’t give me this BS that Obama has the same level of experience as Palin…Obama has travelled and lived around the world, is highly educated, a Constitutional Lawyer, Senator, etc. He was perfectly at ease during his trip to the middle east and europe this summer.)
McCain claims he puts “country first”. With this choice, McCain has put his political interests first, not the country.
Sad, very sad.

We are spending 10 billion dollars a month in Iraq, certainly not because of any verifiable link to the people who are responsible for 9-11 in which some 3,500 people were killed.
Right now the United States ranks 37th in Health Care Systems, 72nd in Health Care System Performance, 42nd in Life Expectancy, 37th in Infant Mortality Rate, 18th in overall Education with a ranking of 24th in Math and Science. We do rank number 1 in debt.
On a federal level we spend 5 billion a year trying to cure cancer. Cancer which kills 1 person every minute, over 525,000 people a year. Our infrastructure is failing, 25% of the bridges in the US need repair, and the bill is about 140 Billion Dollars, but we don’t have it . . . we spent it on Iraq. New Orleans is another example, the 9th Ward still looks like a disaster, which it is, in more than just terms or real estate, but how we treat and look after our citizens. 3,361 Dams in the US need repair at a cost of over 10 billion dollars, but we don’t have it . . . we spent it on Iraq.
Part of the legacy of George Bush is an addiction to the Military Industrial Complex, and spending money in an empire-building excursion in the Middle East. And as far as I can tell, McCain, a ex Military Jet Jockey who finished 895 out of a class of 899 at the Naval Academy, and is now a US Senator, along with the former beauty queen, turned Mayor, turned Governor does not represent a change from this insanity.
On the other hand Obama does represent a change, an intelligent well-spoken man who graduated Harvard Law with honors, and also was the President of the Harvard Law Review, a community organizer, who also taught Constitutional Law at Chicago University, a former state legislator, and now US Senator. Joe Biden graduated with a J.D. from Syracuse, and also taught Constitutional Law, and is also a US Senator.
So, your choice is simple, if you want to see your country continue down a path of self-destruction vote for McCain/Palin.
If you want to see the United States come back and be a dominant Country in the World. A country where we diplomatically solve problems between countries rather than go to war, where people are healthy and well educated, driving vehicles running on clean energy sources on safe highways and bridges, drinking clean water from behind safe damns, breathing clean air, living longer because we are controlling if not curing cancer, a world where we are consistently acting in our best interests. If this is the United States you want, vote Obama/Biden.

McCain is having too many “senior moments”. He can get rid of all this by taking a simple test and publishing the results. He won’t do that and it makes him look suspect. R Reagan barely knew his name his last year as president. Do we really want that? S Palin has already shown signs of power abuse. We’ve had 8 years of that secrecy and abuse.

Posted by: hjpowell | September 14, 2008, 4:18 pm 4:18 pm

h lash: apparently you read a different version of Doctor John’s post then I am reading. He is stating his medical opinion. Facts are facts – even when you don’t like them. Putting politics aside, McCain has a fairly significant chance of dying or being physically/mentally impaired over the next four years. So, he chose Governor Palin as his successor-in-waiting. If you like her, then McCain’s age should not bother you in the least and, if you really like her, then it will make you want to vote for her even more.
If, however, one does not care for her – then a problem arises.

Hey H lash, the amtrack rides make me respect Joe Biden even more. Just like the Obama’s chose to raise their daughters in a stable environment in Chicago and not move them to DC, Joe Biden chose to raise his kids in Delaware and not in DC. Barack can’t take a train home every night, Joe Biden can (It has to be at least a 1-2 hour ride..) I consider that a sacrifice. He could of easily rented an apartment in VA and gone home on the weekends.

I am an Independent, and whether it is politically correct or not, McCain’s age is important, especially in light of his VP choice. Despite the media’s focus on his mother, McCain’s father died in his early 70s; he has a history of a deadly form of skin cancer, and his body is probably riddled with painful arthritis.
This isn’t ageism…no one is saying McCain’s age makes him incompetent; although, I do believe he should be screened for Alzheimers.

It is unfortunate but true; McCain’s age is a legitimate issue that should openly be discussed without reprimand. McCain’s VP choice is expected to slide into the pilot’s seat if necessary and it is not unrealistic to expect them to be licensed to do so.
As voters we should not make this a partisan concern but one of common sense.

Posted by: Patricia Kortt | September 14, 2008, 4:30 pm 4:30 pm

McLiar’s age becomes a factor because he has made it one, by seeming to dodder in public, being unable to articulate anything like an agenda if elected — beyond the usual Republican “cut waste and spending” generalities.
After 6 years of Republican control of Congress and the White House, we have a crashing economy, failing financial sector, soldiers dying abroad with no end in sight, a huge Federal deficit and a Republican candidate who promises to keep Bush’s economic, military and budgetary processes in place.
If you can’t remember anything else, remember that the only time since 1980 that we have had a balanced Federal budget, in the black, has been during the years of the Democratic Presidency, 1993-2000. If you want your country back on an even keel, vote Democratic in November.
Thanks.

I agree with jk as too…
Im a 68 year old Virginia republican woman. Ive liked John McCain since the primaries. But his VP choice shows me he picked her for political reasons. Even though I’m pro-life, I have to say I’m not too impressed by Sarah Palin.
I’m just a simple woman who wants to know that there is someone with a head on their sholders in the white house and they are fighting for me.
I don’t understand all the commotion she causes.
I think that questioning his health is important to make sure that we are choosing the right candidate.
I agree that if John McCain was really putting his country First, he would of picked a better VP.
I’ve really started to look at Obama. I saw him when he came to VA. He speaks to what I’m lookin for. I can tell he’s honest and sincere bout what he’s gunna do.

My mom died from melanoma, so I learned quite a bit about it, fast! It’s normally fatal, the first time, let alone, the 3rd time.
I have seen pictures of Senator McCain from several years ago, just now, I looked them up, as suggested by someone in a comment, he does look 20 years older!
Cripes! I was a McCain supporter 8 years back. I hadn’t voted Republican before, and I’m pro choice, but I really liked him. His independence from everyone else was a magnet for me.
People say these days, “The McCain of 2000, wouldn’t vote for the McCain of 2008″! Well, I can honestly say, they’re correct.
I don’t even know the guy anymore.
He seems like he’s always ready to explode any second, which is scary for a guy who can push a button and blow the world up.
Also, because he picked Palin, at his age, and his ill health, and yes, he is ill, (melanoma never leaves you, it’s always there, waiting), I can’t vote for him.
If he was more independent like in the past, and had chosen Ridge, maybe. Maybe I’d have thought about it, but not now.
The more I read about Palin (NY Time, Wash Post, Boston Globe, LA Times) just today, she is a certifiable liar apparently.
Let’s just say, I think Palin will be worse than Cheney, and that’s saying a lot!
show us your records senator mccain. then we can make an educated decision.
ACCORDING TO INSURANCE ACTUARIES, MCCAIN ONLY HAS A 12 – 16% CHANCE OF LIVING ANOTHER 4 YEARS, and that’s only his age. That’s not considering his ill health!
AND I SURE AS HECK AM NOT VOTING FOR PALIN FOR PRESIDENT, NO WAY!

How did this get onto the race issue? Republicans will vote for a woman or a minority in a heartbeat because we can judge someone on the content of their character. Democrats and liberals just love the poor and downtrodden precisely as long as the poor and downtrodden can’t survive without them.
Give them someone successful who doesn’t need their paternalistic protection, like Sarah Palin, Carly Fiorina, or Michael Steele, and they are the Enemy, a traitor to their own kind in the eyes of the oh-so-caring liberal.
Your biggest problem is going to come in the privacy of the voting booth when your “progressive” souls show themselves.
Then you’ll blame it on the “racist Republicans”, (I’m sorry “Rethugs” or “Repugs” as befits your schoolyard mentalities) when Republicans wouldn’t have voted for the most liberal senator in Washington under any circumstances.
Oh, and the constant barrage of churlish, childish insults and condescension just prove my point.

Posted by: jenn | Sep 14, 2008 10:49:18 AM
people believe that because they don’t want to believe something bad about him. people who still cling to that idea are mindless drones of the extreme right. there are mindless drones on both sides… but the right seem to have the monopoly on racist, sexist, and downright bigoted views.
i am a white man, grew up on a farm, small town… all that stuff that the uber cons say that is the foundation of the republican party. yes, i support obama because that right wing mindset is offensive, mindless and small. there is no convincing people who are willing to peg obama as a black extremist, a muslim, etc. they are gone, and i am embarrassed every time i read people speaking about oobama like this.
of all places, a conference on VALUES, they were selling obama Waffles. check it out… so blatantly racist and bigoted… at a conference on VALUES!!

I agree with MaCaskill, it needs to to talked about. This is highlighted by his choice of Vice President. I don’t know if I could sleep at night if Palin were in charge due her her foreign policy (the blend of hawkishness and lack of knowledge). So I want to know if elected, McCain will be alive or not or if he will be incapcitated by treatment for melanoma.

h lash answer my question to reaganfan ..
Suppose you had to choose between two Presidential candidates, one of whom had spent 20 years in Congress plus had considerable other relevant experience and the other of whom had about half a dozen years in the Illinois state legislature and 2 years in Congress. Which one do you think would make a better President? If you chose #1, congratulations, you picked James Buchanan over Abraham Lincoln
so you’re saying Lincoln wasn’t ready?

reagan – McCain the only thing that ties them together is the fact they both have lots of senior moments.
as for obama trying to fix all the problems that Bush has created at least he will try not 4 more years of the same
The policy prescriptions in John McCain’s acceptance speech were nothing but retreads of the failed policies of the Bush-Cheney years:
He promised tax cuts for the rich and the corporations.
He promised “free trade” deals that hemorrhage American jobs.
He promised vouchers for people to pull their kids out of public schools.
He trashed the teachers’ unions.
He promised more deregulation of big business.
He promised more privatization of government services.
He promised judges who will curtail consumer protection, worker safety, and women’s reproductive rights.
He promised to continue the saber rattling and threats against Iran, Russia and any other country that defies U.S. hegemony.
He promised more militarization of our foreign policy.
He called for peace through war.

If Fiorina thought Palin was ready and right for the job, she would have said “Who cares, Palin is ready.” She didn’t say that and instead cried “ageism”. The problem is Fiorina knows what we all do – Palin is not ready.
So instead the GOP whines like Democrats about sexism, racism, ageism or whatever-ism. Face it, the current batch of “Republicans” have become the thing they hate – wasteful spenders more interested in flash over substance. And I already voted against that idiot Lieberman once, and McCain is going to put him in the cabinet? And the morons on here saying in the same breath that “Palin is great and energizes me”, but “Don’t worry she’s not really going to be doing anything.” What the heck is that BS?
And what will McCain accomplish by winning like this? Nothing – he’ll be President but has no sound economic plan, no sound plan on healthcare or Medicare reform, no sound plan on Social Security and no real chance of changing anything while the dems hold congress.

McCain — Palin:
No more w years of $4 a gallon of gas.
No more 4 years of no Jobs.
No more 4 years of Iraq war.
No more 4 years of lies.
No more 4 years of no health insurance.
Palin
Lying is a Virtue to Palin
a) she sold the jet in eBay. That is a lie.
b) She said no, but no thanks to the “bridge to nowhere.” That is a lie.
c) Last year Palin received $200 million of earmarks, she has always denied receiving anything. When she was asked in the interview, she still denied to have received earmarks, but everybody knows that is a LIE.
c) She said she fired the Public Safty commissioner not because he did not fire the troop — the in-law who divorced the sister. That everybody knows that is a lie.
Now the Value issue. If Palin is a holder of these fuzzy values, how did she not teach her own daughter those values. Values? Mere whitewash.

The reality is that either Obama or McCain may not survive their Presidency. The point is that Palin is not qualified to step in on day one. You can make up all the lies you want to justify that she has absolutely no foreign policy knowledge, lies about her own record on earmarks (yes, she lied!), lied about her so called budget cutting when she charged the tax payers to work in her own home, is under investigation for abuse of power!
Unbelievable that republicans including Bush can justify being leaders of our nation and they have no problem lying to the American public.
The so called muslim smears, raise tax claims about Obama is just another lie from the Republicans. LOOK AT THE ECONOMY STUPID! YOU WANT TO CONTINUE THIS FOR ANOTHER 4 YEARS?! Too bad some choose to listen to lies because Obama gives 3x TAX CUTS to middle class. Find the facts in the Washingto Post, CNN, or Tax Policy Center. Unbelievable that 80% of people in this country think Bush is the worst President in our history and some people want to elect McCain who agreed with Bush 90% of the time. Utter stupidity!!

Discussing McCain’s health issue in public is as legitimate as questioning Sarah Palin reason for parading her children in public to win sympathy; at the same time, Republicans crying foul that Democrats are talking badly about Palin’s children.
Had she been a Democrat, Republicans should have tore her apart for doing that.
I am not sure how Republicans have succeeded with this aspect of feeding the media with fuzzy stuff.
Every American has a right to be involve in a discourse — what will happen if an already aged Presidential candidate with an unqualified Vice President dies in office?

Take a look at this picture [see link]. I think that’s the reality of what’s going on – seeing Obama do his stadium speech to 85,000 – whatever McCain thought before and whatever he was doing before – he knew it wouldn’t work anymore. He had to do something drastic – and that ended up being Sarah Palin. The women could do their knitting and vote for her – hide the more stranger aspects of Palin’s church and she fits in neatly with the Christian Right – who are okay that she wants to rule by divine providence.
http://files.myopera.com/Cole2/albums/594898/2r-MACP-huge.jpg
If he gets in – she’s President!
Foreign policy agenda- you know things to do with those pesky countries outside of the US – will focus on oil and war for oil and diplomacy for oil and war.
Youll love it!
Where you take the oil from – you’ll leave democracy behind and that’s got to be good! The economy that can’t get any worst – McCain’s going to Washington to change Washington and besides he was a war hero!
Reality is in the knitting!

How much of the rest of the Constitution do you not support? Your failure to support this document would seem to be the antithesis of your supposition that you are somehow American and others are not.
Additionally, while teaching Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago, Obama was a part of a committee that also included a man who claimed to be a part of a group that had committed 25 bombings in the United States, these crimes against the United States occurred when Senator Obama was 9 years old. It would occur to me that “he hangs out with” is a severe extension of any form of reality.

Just look at him, you are lying to yourself if you say he is not to old. He has forgotten so many things while campaigning and his everloving press has let him get away with it. McCain is 72. Why don’t you Google George W Bush and see what he looked like on inauguration day in 2001 and take a good look at him now.

Sally, right now the United States ranks 37th in Health Care Systems, 72nd in Health Care System Performance, and 42nd in Life Expectancy, 37th in Infant Mortality. Is this acceptable to you? The countries that have rankings above us tend to have some form of “socialized medicine” and it seems to lead to better results than we are experiencing.
I would rather be a living socialist moron here, than a dead supporter of some very wealthy insurance companies. But you have your own choice.

McCain chose politics before country when he chose to put Palin a heartbeat away from the presidency. Doesn’t anyone have concern about the massive millions of dollars the Obama campaign is spending. They brag about the fund raising amounts but they sure don’t report how much of that money is going out the door. In twelve months of campaigning the Obama team has spent more than $200 million and continues to spend more. His glamorous Hollywood style acceptance ceremony cost more than $5 million.
In all this time and massive spending Obama still only receives a 41% rating that he is the person to be president. Talk about “same old politics”, spend, spend, spend that’s all he has done for a year.
Take a look at the recent unemployment figures. Obama’s state of Illinois is in the top 5 for the highest unemployment rate. What has Senator Obama done to help his state create jobs?
American voters it’s time to step back and take a good look beyond the glitz, glamour and feel good speeches and look at this man’s qualities to lead a country. What has he done in his political career to advance the quality of life for the citizens of his state and country? If your vote is in favor of Obama in the White House I hope in two years you remember how he got there and who put him there.

777,
You are an idiot… What have you been listening to for the past 20 years? White Supremacy??? It is one thing to disagree with a policy, but to just at plain ignorant???!! Get off the blogs and go read a book! I get so sick of “white people” like yourself putting down any race of people other than whites. Hispanics, blacks, etc. are here to stay and you need to get over yourself. This country belongs to them as it belongs to you. They pay the same taxes that you pay…get over yourself!!!

Posted by: MK | September 14, 2008, 6:48 pm 6:48 pm

777—-Obama doesn’t claim ALL the stuff his church teaches. Sarah Palin DOES claim all the stuff her church teaches. The stuff her church teaches is a whole lot more scary than the stuff some people at Obama’s old church claim. Sarah says her pipeline is God’s plan. Her church believes that they have to spread their version—which they believe is the ONLY truth about God—to the entire world and they believe that if you have to do it by war, that’s OK. Sarah Palin is ready and willing to start wars with Russia, Korea and Iran–and that’s just for starters. She believes God talks directly to her and she believes, that whatever she thinks she hears, it is her duty to force our country and other countries to do. Black liberation theology can’t hold a candle to the evil that Sarah’s righteousness could do if she had the power to force her own way on the world. George W. Bush has alienated us from nearly every country in the world. Sarah would complete the job and America would fall as Russia did. John McCain’s mother may be alive, but John is a male and you notice that his father and both grandfathers died at younger ages than John. Also, POW’s have been shown to die at younger ages than their contemporaries. Add the four episodes with melanoma and it would be irresponsible not to question McCain’s age in relation to his fitness for the toughest job in the world. He isn’t fit. Sarah doesn’t know anything about international relations—-except that she’s ready to start a “nu-cu-lar” war with Russia.

I was an undecided voter until Obama’s comment about the selection of Gov. Palin being same old Washington politics.
Let’s take a look at Obama’s “new Washington politics”. He runs with Ted Kennedy, Harry Reid and Joe Biden (life long Washington politicians). He degraded Hillary and called Bill Clinton a racist in the campaign. But now with the polls showing him behind he wants to buy his way into the White House by bringing Bill Clinton into his campaign.
Senator Obama might have started his campaign 19 mths ago as a common decent mid-class American but he has turned to the other side just like most greedy and selfish politicians. In the past 19 mths Obama has become a multi-millionaire personally. He has spent millions of the American citizens dollars in this campaign. He signed up for a fixed campaign fund but decided not to adhere to his word. To me that means he may not be able to balance a budget. He is spending away all of the campaign funds. He reported record donations in May/June, strange because that’s when the Tax Rebate checks were mailed. He accepted the poor peoples rebate donations instead of encouraging them to buy the necessary personal items they needed for their families. The rebate was to stimulate the economy not fill Obama’s pockets.
Fellow citizens/voters take a hard look at who is actually demonstrating “change” and true to his word. McCain said he wants to shake up Washington and break the politics as usual. He did that with his VP choice, he brought in a fresh middle class perspective.
Gov Palin’s reference “difference between hockey moms and a pit bull is lipstick” was a wonderful reference to those tough women who manage a family. Obama’s reference “lipstick and a pig” is a despicable comment towards those hard working women.
I have made my decision and will continue to pray the American people will make theirs by truly evaluating what political team will do the best for all of us.

You also need to know that McCane has over 150 lobbyists on his “team” – so much for your healthy future. McCain, half a century ago – wild young man – caught up in a war that killed millions. Half a century later the natural processes of life have taken hold. At the beginning of this campaign when he was carrying his own bags to the aircraft, running out of money – a fair comment would have been ‘silly old fart’, near the campaign John has really aged and to be kind he is now just an ‘old man’ going nowhere.

Are we supposed to hand this country off to incompetent Sarah Palin because we’re afraid to tell the truth.
Also, consider the fact that Cindy McCain is always by John McCain’s side. I don’t think this is loyalty. I think it is because he is already dependent on her to get along. Let’s be honest here. This is our future and our children’s future we’re talking about.

I want John McCain’s health records released. Sarah Palin will be too close to becoming President if he is selected. This has gone from becoming just an issue about ageism, this is an issue of national security. We need to know that we won’t be electing one person in office and getting another one soon thereafter by default.

Hey 777, I know its easier on imbeciles like you, but you can’t pay everyone with the same brush – Wake up. Obama is not some radical left-wing extremist, no matter how many lies you and your racist buddies like lie about it. President of the Harvard Law Review – hmm, doesn’t square with your bullshit as Obama as some black radical . Though i know people with “book-learning” scare you types.
- but keep on being stupid, it really becomes you!

As a retired guy in his 60s, I don’t know two people my age who think they are as sharp as they were ten years ago nor have the energy they did. Plus, knock on wood, I have not had four bouts of melanoma to fight like McCain has. If he would have picked a QUALIFIED woman to run with him, like Condi Rice or Kay Bailey Hutchinson, I might have voted for him. His choice of Palin just sealed the deal for me because Obama-Biden is a clearly superior ticket. Palin is a lightweight beyond belief and it shows me that despite his slogan, McCain put “politics about country.” The McCain of 2000 would not vote for the McCain of 2008.

It’s ageism to talk speak against McCain’s fitness for duty. It’s sexism to speak against Sarah Pain’s fitness for duty. Somehow it isn’t racism to speak against Barack Obama’s fitness for duty. Go figure!

Ed, putting words in people’s mouths again – this is no personal vendetta against McCain – its just the truth, the guy is gonna croak, and croak probably within the next 4 years – it happens – but don’t worry he will be back in fighting trim when the rapture comes and takes you all up to glory in to live out eternity in your white cloud la-la land!

Ron I am in total agreement – the right wingers are the ones bringing the bile back into all this. It’s about the issues – I’m no card -carrying lib, first time I voted Democrat in 12 years was 2004 (yes i voted for Dubya in 2000- ouch)
But this current GOp candidate is not the straight shooter i once admired. and Palin just makes the ticket less appealing – not because she’s a woman (they are many more qualified GOP ladies ), but because she’s Dubya with a dress.

Why should McCain’s age and health status be off limits? Are you saying that is irrelevant? The man has had 3 bouts with melanoma. The deadliest form of skin cancer known to man. There are doctors right now that have a petition to make McCain release ALL of his medical records. He has only release a quarter of his medical records and had all these “rules” in place when he “allowed” selected doctors to review them in THREE hours: no copies, cell phones, internet etc. There is no real cure to melanoma once it has spread. He has had melonama FOUR times since 2002. He smoked 2 packs a day for 25 years and is taking 6 different types of medications but this isn’t an “issue” but “lipstick on a pig” is? America. We are better than this.

McCain is so old that he has thrown his honesty and integrity away and joined the hateful lying smearing Bush people. McCain is too old to face the challenges that Bush and Cheney have left the country with. We don’t need another old republican who surrounds himself with other old republicans to mess the country up any more than it already is. It is time to fix the problems and correct so much of the wrongdoing. People are repeating some outlandish lies that they are obviously hearing from the McCain campaign.

Has anyone noticed McCain’s ring twisting (watch the video of him staring at Palin’s butt) and shuffling off the stage at the RNC after his speech? Some of my doctor friends have observed that these are signs of early onset Parkinson’s. Perhaps his bill of health isn’t as clean as it should be.

I am 70 and with fine genetics (father died at 90)but my mind is less crisp even though I have lived a life as a non smoker and with very little alcohol and no addictive drugs. I would not feel that my mind is prepared to take on international challenges presently. The Cuban missle crisis required the accuracy and youth of a special highly educated younger mind. A limited governor whose education included attending 6 schools of higher learning to gain a degree in journalism is hardly equal to a degree in political science from Columbia U. and someone who has served as president of the Harvard Law Review, and graduated from Harvard Law School with Magna Cum Laude Honors. We have such low standards for evaluating jobs for some reason now. Bush classic vetting, “you’re doing a fine job Brownie.” Did Bush’s low grades and use of coke over the years cause his condition of having no curiosity and lack of political judgment? Its my question.

I love this conversation about who is qualified to hold the offices of president and vp. This is just a dodge to keep people from concentrating on the issues.
Notice that the people ranting about qualification do not include work experience. In fact Palin has more executive experience than any one else in the race.
The questions we should be talking about are do the people have good ideas and can they manage. Hillary for example showed that she cannot even manage a campaign.
The other set of questions should center around inspiring the American people to get back to work. Obama and Palin are both very inspirational. These should be the issues.
The democratic party has become the party of hate. It is a bit scary as this is where the really awful people take advantage of mob thinking. Lets move the dialog to a higher level.

Interesting! Did the gatekeeper not like my post on Claire McCaskill critiquing someone’s age, health, etc.? McCaskill has been pumping up Obama from the very beginning. Somehow, it doesn’t seem to do any good. Now, she chooses to disparage McCain’s age and health to see if that will fly. It won’t. American Voters are paying attention, and the polls show it.
Obama is green. It is laughable that anyone points the finger at Sarah Palin, and worries about the VP slot. Joe Biden has his own health issues, has been in Congress for 36 years, and he is “retirement” age. So, why doesn’t he? What is the retirement age for you?
Obama can survive by bringing in another Washington status quo, or he can pick a qualified candidate from outside Washington. That is a joke! He needs somebody inside Washington to prop him up.
Sarah Palin brings experience, energy, and a maverick stance to compliment that of McCain. I thought there was a law against age discrimination, gender discrimination, and race discrimination.
McCaskill should be ashamed of herself. With her crytal ball, she can ddetermine who is healthy enough to serve. Lightening could strike anybody at anytime. Her tactics on age are the vivid signs of real desperation.

Something that makes total sense. Why should someone who has worked their whole life to earn a pension or social security have to then pay taxes on that money that they already earned!!! Obama gets it.

Senator McCaskill, Ms. Fiorina and Mr. Stephanopoulos:
With respect to John McCain the issues are not how healthy and vigorous he is or his age, but rather, the issues are his mortality and the likelihood of his becoming incapacitated and not able to perform his duties as President if he were elected. I’m a 62 year old male and about one-fifth of the males born in my birth year, 1946, have died. John McCain is 72 years old. He was born in 1936, and about one-third of the males born in his birth year have died. There is about a one-in-seven chance that John McCain will die before inauguration day in 2013 and about a one-in-three chance that he will die before inauguration day in 2017. The chance of either his death or becoming incapacitated is higher; however, I haven’t been able to find a good source that discusses the issue of someone his age becoming incapacitated. I do know that in the decision making process anything that has the likelihoods above demand serious and thoughtful examination.
I think that I have done this, and the factors above have contributed significantly to my decision not to vote for John McCain as President. The election of John McCain as President creates too high of a likelihood that his running mate, Sarah Palin, would succeed him as President within the next four years.
So, Senator McCaskill, when someone tells you that John McCain is healthy and vigorous and that his age is not a factor, smile sweetly and say, “This is not about his health, vigor or age but about his mortality and the likelihood of his becoming incapacitated while he is in office.” There will be of course an outcry of ageism that you will have to withstand. I do believe there was a very famous Missourian who said, “If you can’t stand the heat stay out of the kitchen”.

JUST SOMETHING TO CONSIDER…………………….
From Letters to the Editors @ Fort Worth Star-Telegram – today
How racism works:
What if John McCain were a former president of the Harvard Law Review?
What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?
What if McCain were still married to the first woman he said ‘I do’ to?
What if Obama were the candidate who left his first wife after she no longer measured up to his standards?
What if Michelle Obama were a wife who not only became addicted to pain killers, but acquired them illegally through her charitable organization?
What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?
What if Obama were a member of the ‘Keating 5′?
What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?
If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?
This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference.
No wonder the rest of the world thinks we are idiots stuck in the twilight zone of yesterday.

Has anyone wondered if McCain is even insurable under the policies he’s pitching to us? He would be DENIED coverage by HMOs, long-term care insurers and life insurance companies. TOO RISKY with his four malignancies and that his grandfather died at 68 and his father at 76(longevity is projected from same sex parent). Too risky for them and too risky for us.

Obama and Palin are both very inspirational. A simple measure of that is the turn out when they speak. That should be a huge issue as America is suffering a crisis of lack of self confidence. We need to get the country going again – and working together.
Now some democrats just want to talk hate – whether it be Hillary is not in the race or some one does not exactly fit their physical description of a candidate. Penn of Penn and Teller talks about how the country has become divided with the republicans talking hate and the republicans talking fear.
I am for the candidate who can bring us together. We are in a bit of a mess. Lehman Brothers has gone under now after Bear Sterns. Fannie and Freddie Mac put out so many unsupported loans that they are also bankrupt. The political appointees who ran them made fortunes cooking the books. Jamie Garelick seemed to be one of the big winners on that one.
The bottom line is that we are importing all of our unskilled labor, all of our skilled labor, all our money, and inspiration. We are in a spiral and we need to get our act together as Americans. We will not be the generous country of diversity unless we reverse those trends.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13412.html
“We recognize it’s not going to be 2000 again,” McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said, alluding to the media’s swooning coverage of McCain’s ill-fated crusade against then-Gov. George W. Bush and the GOP establishment. “But he lost then. We’re running a campaign to win. And we’re not too concerned about what the media filter tries to say about it.”
McCain strategists now have became even more sure of themselves after the picture-perfect reaction — in the GOP’s view — to the decision to put Palin on the ticket. The choice provoked derision from elites, jubilation among conservative voters long skeptical of McCain and uncertainty from Obama about how to respond. If you are a McCain staffer, it doesn’t get better than that — so who cares that the candidate had met her only once and her chief foreign policy credential seems to be that she lives closer to Russia than other Americans.
With polls moving in their direction and a unanimous view in the political world that the fundamentals of the race have changed dramatically in the past few weeks, McCain aides aren’t about to drop a flood-the-zone approach that they believe has worked. “Most people would have been afraid to have called him out on race,” boasted an adviser. “And we’re not going to let sexism or denigration of her go unchecked now.”
On all three counts — their portrayal of Obama as a celebrity, outrage at his purported use of race and his flat-footedness and confusion on how to respond to Palin — McCain aides saw weakness and indecision.
It adds up to a campaign that is now unapologetically aggressive and aimed almost entirely at keeping Obama off-message, even if it means hitting him below the belt in the process.
“Clearly we intend to stay on offense,” Rogers said. “That’s what we need to do because the campaign is fundamentally about him. We feel comfortable about the ads we’re running and arguments we’re making.”
And, given their surge in the polls and Obama’s uncertainty about how to respond to the Palin phenomenon, they’re going to keep it up.
“Every day not talking about the economy, the war and how to fix a broken system is a victory for McCain,” said John Weaver, a former top strategist to the nominee who left the campaign last year. “They’re going to ride it as long as they can and as long as the mainstream media puts up every ridiculous charge.”
The negative and often exaggerated or misleading claims being made about Obama and Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, especially those playing on Palin’s gender, are just too irresistible for the process-consumed online and cable news media that now drives the campaign conversation, Weaver said.
“Unless there is a hurricane, they’re going to cover it,” he observed.
Added Terry Nelson, McCain’s former campaign manager: “It works in part because Obama responds to it.”

The point here is that we have people ranting that some one is a liar (maybe the case) or whatever with no backing in fact. OK, I understand that people get emotional about these things.

For all of you righties on this site that are calling into question Obama’s smoking for 20 years… McCain smoked for 25 five years…
McCain is currently on 6 different meds… including kidney medication, cholesterol medication, has arthritis, 4 bouts with melanoma, and takes Ambien.
All of this was found after a 3 hour exam of only the last 8 years of his medical history. What is he hiding prior to 8 years ago? 3 hours to examine over 1,100 pages of medical records…. 8 years for over 1,100 pages??? I’m 34 and I don’t think I have half of that number of pages in my medical records for my entire life!!!
Constitution minded, freedom loving, resposible people who think that education is a qualification and not a liabilty should be very afraid. The McCain campaign has been mailing out fraudulent absentee ballot applications to Obama supporters in an effort to get them removed from the voter rolls!!! The same thing the Rove/Bush/Cheney camp did in Ohio in 2004. They were able to get 179,000 legally registered voters removed from the rolls in Ohio in 2004; Bush only won by 119,000. McCAIN IS TRYING TO SUBVERT DEMOCRACY… THAT IS NOT COUNTY FIRST!!! IT’S DISHONORABLE AND COWARDLY!!!
I honestly wonder if McCain of 4 years ago would recognize who he had become??? Maybe he has the onset of dementia and actually thinks he’s telling the truth….

Democrats live in the real world
Republicans live in some twisted bizarro world where everything is backwards.
case in point
if the middle class get tax cuts money will trickle up to businesses because 95 percent of america will have more money to spend.
but in the bizaro world the republicans give taxcuts to the welathiest who NEVER reward their workers but keep profits in the sr management in form of bonuses … they invest in real estate (mccain don’t know how many houses he have – proof) they ship jobs overseas or they just do like fannie freddy and lehman just did and look for the bailout.

6. lies about those residences-he has NINE not the four he tried to float out to us at first
7. lies about Obama’s sex education initiative to protect children from pedophiles
8. he lies about why Obama didnt visit the troops in Germany(again repeated it over and over)

Posted by: PAposter | September 14, 2008, 11:07 pm 11:07 pm

reaganfan,
I think you meant one of the greatest CORPORATE expansions in history. Reagan’s policies have led to an eroding of the middle class, have created a legacy of corrupt ceo’s, and a weakening of unions. His economic policies led directly to the S&L scandals in the 80′s…
One of the first pieces of legislation passed when Bush took office (Republicans controlled the House and Senate) allowed commercial banks to be able to buy and sell residential loans. This has directly led to the current housing crisis.
Every time the republican’s have control of Government they privatize and de-regulate. When are we going to learn that industries will not police themselves and will only cause economic hardships for the American people… Un-regulated business leads to corruption and greed (record profits for oil companies- ceo’s getting millions for being bailed out by the Government) it has been proven time and time again. It will only get worse under a McCain administration….

@PAposter: Some on here like to fan the flames of animosity. Rather than simply disagreeing, it degrades into insults, lies, etc.
Ultimately, the microcosm of this blog is emblematic of a larger strategy of misinformation. Giving people misleading “truths” to make an “educated” decision. Neither side’s hands are clean, but this year the GOP is a little more obvious than they have been in the past.
Personally, I think everybody is sick of Bush/Cheney – I know I am. I think it was a tactical mistake for McCain to suddenly start running a campaign against him. The problem is really that his ideas are no different – so how does talk about anything meaningful?
As the financial mess worsens, you’ll see Obama simplify this more into “Are you better off under Bush and the Republicans – if so, vote for McCain.” It will be hard for McCain to counter that no matter what he says.

McCain wants to tax health insurance benefits, rescind the tax benefit your employer receives for giving you health insurance. That means you will pay more for health insurance or your company will not offer it.
Instead of relying on what the extremes of either side are saying, go to factcheck.org and educate yourselves.
This is not the time to let any sort of -ism lead you to choose a candidate. Make a decision based on fact not fear.

Also when a President runs up a record deficit year after year by borrowing it weakens the dollar thus reducing your buying power and causing a recession… Over the past 30 years a Democratic administration has been the only administration to produce a surplus- actually strenthening the dollar… This is simple economics and I really don’t understand why Democrats don’t call out Republican on their economic record… Every Republican Pres over the last 30 years has had a record of producing an historically budget high deficit. Not very fiscally conservative record if you ask me…

Doug,
Very useful post. People also need to note the following:
Adm. John S. McCain – Died at 64
Adm. John S. McCain II – Died at 71
Sen. John S. McCain III is currently 72.

Old age is real. Cancer is real. People who don’t want to discuss that are fools. The fact is that McCain is an old man who can’t get the attention
with his Bush doctrine ideas, so he had to sex up his act with a “no one” from “no where.”

Age of the candidate for president is a big deal when a carelessly chosen, unvetted, radical, choice for VP has been made. How soon some forget that Reagan was suffering from Alzheimers while approximately McCain’s age, while in the White House. The final consideration, after McCain’s competence is his health and age. McCain comes up short of acceptable in all three categories.

Only 15 Presidents have lived past 76 the age McCain will be at the end of his first term. Age is certainally a factor.
Obama had no choice in his color. Hillary had no choice in her sex. McCain has had a choice in running for President at an earlier age and he failed. That he choses to run now at his age is his choice and it should be fair game.

re: Malcom X
Actually, later in life, Malcolm X himself didn’t even follow the anti-white Malcolm X doctrine from his youth. He became an intellectual and a moderate voice for peace and change in race relations, before he was killed (by more extremist members of the black liberation movement?).
Anyways, that’s all so 1970′s. Anything the are likely to teach at Obama’s church has moved far beyond Malcolm X at this stage. You think black people haven’t been writing since the seventies?
Get a grip.

Is that all you’ve got?? It didn’t work in the primary and it won’t work now. What has something Malcolm X may or may not have said 60 years ago got to do with our economy in the toilet. Just about every economist has said that McCain’s economic policy will further wreck our economy.

Reagan Fan, I resided in California when Reagan was Governor out there. He was responsible for seeking and achieving a cut in funding for the mental institutions in California that created a loss of custodial care for those who were unable to care for themselves. This put the burden on families or lacking families who were able, the individual who was institutionalized. These people became the homeless of San Francisco. If you go to San Francisco, and see people who cannot carry on a conversation except for with their shopping cart, who are starving in the streets, sleeping in Parks, doorways and shelters, thank your good buddy Ron.

John and Cindy McCain looked very patriotic visiting ground zero, hand in hand. Barack Hussein Obama looked like a guy who couldn’t get a date to the prom. Where was Michelle Obama? Does she really hate America so much that she celebrates the terrorist attacks of 9/11 at home in a turban?
Barack Hussein Obama and his anti-American wife spent 20 years listening to spews of hatred and “God Damn America” in a so-called church of God. Apparently Michelle believes America caused 9/11. All these radical teachings have been instilled in their brains by Jeremiah Wright.
For over two decades Obama turned to, was counseled by, and formed a strong personal bond with a minister who is a divider and a hatemonger. This simply cannot effectively act as a unifying force for the USA.
The best result out of Obama’s campaign may turn out to be progress in the form of all American cultures accepting that each individual, regardless of race, is to be rightfully held accountable for their actions, affiliations, as well as the doctrines that they adhere to and cultivate in others.
The embarrassing litany of anarchy, filth and hate that Rev. Wright spews should not be excused away as simply “the way our people speak”. Wrong is wrong and is not to be determined on a sliding scale according to skin color.
Obama has told too many lies. He has too many ties to anti-Americans and terrorists.
Have you thought about what might happen if Obama really is a closet Muslim and becomes president?
Vote for John McCain in November. Country first!

Oh please. If you can only quote edited clips run by FOX news, don’t bother to post. I know someone personally who has attended Trinity church when Rev. Wright was there. She said he is one quirky dude but doesn’t preach hate and didn’t preach hate when she visited with a relative. Wright is about the black community taking care of itself.
Obama ended their friendship after Wrright finally revealed his huge ego.
When I hear something, I want to find facts and I did. I went to a source who had been there.

Posted by: hjpowell | September 15, 2008, 12:51 am 12:51 am

777, Just be honest and say what you mean? You will not vote for Obama because he’s black.
At least be honest with yourself. You can discount all of the proof that Sarah Palin has no idea what time it is, but you’ll cling to this clearly racist line of thinking in face of obvious proof to the contrary. You can discount the volumes of taped evidence where McCain is against issues before he’s for them, before he’s against them.
You can discount the whole Family Values Hypocrisy that is being played by the Republican Party this and every Fall.
When are you going to get tired of living a lie? You applaud the Obama Waffles and then have the audacity to call Obama a racist.
I guess that whole “What would Jesus do?” question is lost on you isn’t it. Higher Morals my behind. You know damn well that if Obama had a daughter who was in Palin’s shoes that it would be all over the news and the moral decay of our nation, but since she’s a Republican it is now magically okay.
It is very funny that statement issued by Sarah and Todd Palin used the specific word choice in regards to her and her daughter’s pregnancies. Why would there be a choice and why make the statement? There shouldn’t have been a choice at all based on her views regarding abortion. It is a very strange method of affirming the very thing you say you are against.
Also, this whole thing with McCain basically insulting our intelligence saying the campaign would have been different if Obama would have gone to town hall meetings with him around the country. So I will outright lie and it is okay for me to lie if I don’t get my way?
He is right about one thing. He is divorced from the issues that impact the every day lives of the American people. Most of us realize that lying is not a selling point on a resume.
Unlike your statement that is not based in reality, everything I’ve stated are verifiable facts. But I forgot, the truth really doesn’t matter, just the undying need to stay in power at all costs.
Remember the year 2042 if not sooner.

@nineeleven: John & Cindy’s facade looks great everywhere they go. Did you see the body language between them on The View? These two are married–in name. John Sidney McCain. Do you have a problem with Obama’s Muslim name given to him at birth?
As for Michelle, she’s a lawyer on leave and a mother too but they’ve decided that children need at least one parent at home while one is doing the traveling. She loves this country too. Unlike Palin’s family of 5 where she and her husband globetrot together while her two oldest children were/are out of control.
There’s a reknowned neurologist who proved that Reagan had Alzheimers during his first term. He showed videos of his lapses in speeches and attempts at memory recall. Republicans don’t want that known. Just like they banned CBS’s movie about the Reagans. It finally came out on DVD and was great.

Well, if it’s fair to discuss McCain’s age – and the idea some Democrats are pushing that he’s going to keel over any minute now – then how about we start discussing the possibility of an Obama assassination. After all, our country has a longer history of assassinated Presidents than of Presidents who die of natural causes while in office.

Great age must be considered if there is a serious question about the candidate for vice president being qualified. The evidence is overwhelming that she is not. It has absolutely nothing to do with her sex. Also, as I understand, Obama cares deeply for his grandmother still living and his late grandfather who finished raising him after his mother died of cancer. He attributes to this family, all white, his values and decision to forgo high-powered Wall Street work for service to the community in Chicago, teaching constitutional law and working for his district in the Illinois legislature before going to Congress to work for his constituents there. The only mystery about Obama is for those conservatives who cannot comprehend trying to make the world a better place instead of pursuing the great money chase.

Republicans circled the wagons and got that senior citizen thru 2 terms. Alzhiemers is progressive and takes years to manifest but loved ones see the slow change in memory.

Posted by: h lash | September 15, 2008, 2:06 am 2:06 am

Barack Obama is qualified to be President. He actually has more years of experience in government (8 years in Illinois State Senate, 4 years in US Senate) than did Abe Lincoln when he was elected President (8 years in Illinois State Senate, 2 years in US Congress). Lincoln turned out to be a pretty good President (even though he had no prior “executive experience”), so the argument that Obama isn’t qualified is nonsense. Joe Biden is also thoroughly qualified for the Presidency, so if they were elected and anything unfortunate happened to Obama, we’d have an experienced person right there to take over. McCaskill’s right – McCain’s age and health are relevant in this race and must be taken into consideration. His mother may still be alive, but his father died at the age of 70. If McCain had shown good judgment and leadership by making a responsible choice for his VP, his age might be less of an issue, but he didn’t.

h lash jk: Obama isn’t ready to be President on day one! Palin has room to learn the job. Obama doesn’t!
Excuse me?? Obama was president of the Harvard Law Review along with the following US Supreme Court Justices: Edward Sanford, Felix Frankfurter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Antonin Scalia, Stephen Breyer and Chief Justice John G Roberts, Jr. I think Obama already knows the job! It took Palin attending 6 different colleges just to get her journalism degree. Not that journalism is not a worthwhile career. But just how long is it going to take Palin to learn the job of president of the US then? Well ok she did get a job in journalism after she graduated with a local TV station reading the dog sled results.
And yes she made governor of a sate with a population of 670,053. 34.5% of which were too young to vote for her. So that left about 438,000 voters. The population of the US eligible to vote at that time was about 206.5 million.
So let’s look at some more facts. Palin won the governor seat in 2006 with 14,697 votes (48%)That means roughly 30,000 even bothered to vote! In 2004 Obama won his US Senate seat with 3,597,456 votes 70%!
So I suggest lash riprock that before you go spewing nonsense on a blog that goes world wide you better get some facts first. If you can’t run with the big dogs then stay on the porch!

I am prepared. I need no on-the-job training. I wasn’t a mayor for a short period of time. I wasn’t a governor for a short period of time.”
so much for McCain’s real thoughts on Palin being president

With America facing historic debt, multiple war fronts, stumbling health care, a weakened dollar, all-time high prison population, skyrocketing Federal spending, mortgage crises, bank foreclosures, etc. etc., this is an unusually critical election year.
Let’s look at the educational background of the candidates and see what they bring to the job:
Obama: Occidental College – Two years. Columbia University – B.A. political science with a specialization in international relations. Harvard – Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna *** Laude
Biden: University of Delaware – B.A. in history and B.A. in political science. Syracuse University College of Law – Juris Doctor (J.D.)
McCain: United States Naval Academy – Class rank 894 out of 899 (meaning that, like George Bush, McCain was at the bottom of his class)
Palin: Hawaii Pacific University – 1 semester North Idaho College – 2 semesters – general study University of Idaho – 2 semesters – journalism Matanuska-Susitna College – 1 semester University of Idaho – 3 semesters – B.A. in journalism
Now, which team are you going to hire to lead the most influential nation in the world?”

I think that Americans have to get over the idea that age is irrelevant in a President. Actually, the McCain campaign has tried to make Obama’s youth an issue. It is stupid then for them to create an exception making older age supposedly irrelevant. In fact, it is highly relevant. The Presidency is a gruelling job that accelerates ageing in most Presidents. While it is true that John McCain may not be impeded by age now, I have actuarial statistics. I want the next President not to be sidelined by disease, and I definitely do not want him dying in office. Unfortunately, the probability of that happening with McCain is much higher than with Obama. These times are far too dangerous for the nation to possibly be hampered by an invalid president. Interestingly, I did not think this way until I saw my parents ageing. What I learned is that the decline can come without warning. This is particulary true of cognitive changes. I talked with my father a lot over the phone and had regular visits, so it was a shock to me when in the course of a routine phone call I realized his ability to reason had disappeared. McCain will be 80 at the end of his sechond term. Alzheimer’s or other dementia is a very real possibility. Does Fiorina think the voters have to pretend that the risks of a President who is accumulating cognitive dysfunction don’t exist, so that we aren’t ageist? This is the Presidency, not a CEO. I put the bar for President much higher than for a CEO. Fiorina scares me when she seems to think there is complete crossover from the corporate world to the Presidency. As I recollect we’ve just finished trying the President- as- 1st CEO- of- the -Land experiment and it has been a dismal failure. Looking at the current economic mess, McCain had better shutter her. We can’t have a corporate insider representing the campaign when CEO’s look like a big part of the current economic meltdown. These supposed titans of business have been unmasked. They remind me of the illusionist Wizard of Oz with the curtain blown aside. The Republicans have been leading the cheering section for these greedy oafs for too long. And another problem with McCain’s age is that it is indeed hard for an old dog to learn new tricks. This economic crisis should force us to discover a new paradigm in our approach to the economy. FDR “solved” the Depression, not Hoover. I don’t think McCain is going to adapt at the speed he needs to, and he may not adapt at all to current economic realities. His vice-presidential candidate does not have the capabilities we need in these exceedingly dangerous times. She just isn’t going to have time to get herself up to speed, and really she needs Econ 101 as a bare minimum. There just aren’t enough hours in the day. She spent almost half of her time as Alaska governor at home in Wasilla. That’s a model that’s been tried by the current president, and has not been good for the country. I’m talking seriously about her being the President because that very real possibility exists with McCain’s age. I’m a babyboomer, and too many of my friends have had a parent die in their seventies, with death often preceded by a lengthy period of declining health. Our country needs a continuity in leadership that McCain cannot assure. There is nothing about the ‘change’ that Obama might bring that is as threatening as the death of a President. Remember the red phone? John McCain might be unable to answer it. I didn’t want to believe my parents were going downhill, and it seems to me that if McCain is elected it will be because of a streak of denial in the American public. Unfotunately, our beloved elders sicken and die. Look at Senator Kennedy. It’s all around, but we are tarred as ageist if we notice. I’m tired of the wishful thinking of the Republicans. McCain’s age isn’t a problem, just as Iraq was not supposed to be a problem. Get real!!!

When will the strugles we face, not be the evil doing of George Bush. The last two years Democrats have had congress and things have went from bad to worse. Do people really think having a Democrate for president will make it all better. We have to work together, and stop blaming each other and GB. Half the people don’t even care about politics. That leaves a quarter left Democrats and Republicans. We need a canidate close to the center. Obama is unexceptable in that role. As a Republican I have many times called McCain a closet Democrate. He is as close to center as we can give you. Hillary was the closest that you could have given us.

Its funny to hear whites say that after they enslaved blacks for 200 years, and once free they gave them 100 years of subhuman jim crow laws, we have only had equal rights for 40 years and you wonder why he might listen to a liberation theology, we fought in the revolutionary war only to stay slaves, we fought in the civil war for our freedom and as replaemants for family members of slave holders, we fought in segregated units in World War I and II only to return home and be called the N word, we fought in all major conflicts though we have only recently been treated as “real Americans” and with a straight face you tell us we teach hate, stop it. I will tell you liberation theology is wrong, and i wont take my wife or children to a church that speaks and preaches this but if it took 300 years for America to keep her word to blacks, then understand 40 years after we watched MLK get shot down blacks are still learning to as you all say get over it, hate and hurt always take the longest to heal.

The last 2 years Democrats have had Bush vetos and filibusters by repubs to stop all change. So lets not put the last 2 years on them..let’s put all 8 years where they belong on the repubs and McSame’s 4 years are just 4 more years of no change. Congress will still be ran by lobbists.
He has over 150 of them on staff. Do you think they are doing this for fun or for future profits? How is that change? he he he

To the person who pointed out that McCain’s mom is 96 years old and that means he will also live that long – you forgot that women often live much longer than men, and McCain’s mom was never tortured for five years.

Amazing how GOP has an issue with reality. REALITY IS:
John’s age is a strong factor, add in he does not speak on his own issues, his VP selection who took 6 yrs and attended 5 yrs to get a degree from a state college, his melanoma, his slip ups of Iraq, etc, his war mongering chants = USA disaster!
My 86 yrs old aunt of excellent health from head to toe is afraid of him. Asked why? She said even with the health I have I know given my age how hard it is to get going in the mornings.
McCaskill was truthful, and if GOP has a problem with reality and truth then that’s their problem, but shouldn’t be America’s problem, too!

Jose,
Please don’t tell me you’re this dumb/stupidwith your post “I heard yesterday on CNN that their staff doctor was provided with 1,000 pages of doctor’s health records from John McCain, and that everything looked good..
Obama only provided them with one paragraph of information to analyze.
Wonder what they’re hiding? ”
Obviously you are. It means, John has serious problems in the past, and Obama has not. Dang at the dumb down in America!

Has anyone wondered about McCain’s first wife and three children? Her story is compelling evidence that McCain is not a man of honor.
Some of you might also want to check the “Vietnam Veterans AGAINST John McCain” site.
You need to ask how a man that abandoned his crippled wife to marry his multi-millionaire mistress, refers to that multi-millionaire wife as a “c*nt,” voted against every bill supporting veterans, blocked the efforts of POW families to gain information about their loved ones held in Vietnam, voted against equal pay for equal work, admitted extreme ignorance about the economy, has nothing in common with common Americans and endorses falsehood over honor is planning to use a young, vibrant mother of five to his own political benefit and agenda.
It is puzzling that Palin fights the “good ole boys,” then runs willy-nilly into their arms when asked to participate. If elected, I truly hope that she understands the scope of her usefulness in this campaign. Once her usefulness is no longer needed, she will be shut away and marginalized by the “good ole boys” then trotted out for a tie breaking vote now and then when necessary. Those “good ole boys” will not tolerate a “maverick” when it comes to their agenda. As long as she is useful, they will continue to exploit her. It could very well ruin her and her family. I do not believe that she understands or comprehends her role in McCain’s calculated, mean, selfish, and black-hearted step to attain the White House. He was not putting “Country First” when he collaborated under duress with the North Vietnamese or now with his choice of Palin for VP.
It is with regret that I watch this woman be used like a prize at a carnival to appease the tastes and appetites of the evangelical right.
I worry for my country. News is not good this morning on the business front. Our country needs everyone to think and choose carefully this election. Follow every link, look at everything, find the facts.
I would like to recommend http:\\www.factcheck.org
It is a non-partisan, non-profit organization doing everything it can to get the information right.

This is rediculous.
McCain has a disability from being in Hanoi.
Now this is age discrimination.
I would scream that out loud and clear.
Obama is losing the election.
Obama just lost all the “girls”. Now he’s freaking out with Palin on McCain’s side. Clinton could have helped but Obama blew it.
Obama will have a difficult time regaining any momentum, now that the new girl in town, Sarah Palin has spoken. Obama and his clan of far left radicals may have lost his minimal lead permanently.
Palin’s speech was tremendous. Hillary’s speech was terrific. We have seen two women with ambition and love for our country demonstrate to the world a vitality that will not be forgotten. With Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama could have made history – but instead, Obama chose not to do so. Now McCain and his VP pick are doing just that.
Obama hogged history. So Hillary’s 18 million voters watching her speech will likely produce no gain for Obama. Instead, it will lay the basis for a lasting resentment at Obama’s failure to select her as VP. Palin’s presence was the icing on the cake.
Obama can’t win the votes of women, especially older women.
The combination of Hillary’s speech the other night and Sarah Palin’s speech, made Obama’s chance of winning those women voters a lot harder, if not impossible.

Pittsburgh is prime example! Due to an internal feud within City Council, a very young member(Luke Ravenstahl-27)who never held a real job after college was thrown into the position of City Council President. Shortly after that the nearly elected Mayor (Bob O’Connor), became ill and past away shy of 7 months in office thus elevating Luke to Mayor. Yes, there was excited about the possibility of young ideas to turn around a struggling Pittsburgh. The reality is, Pittsburgh has a Mayor caught up with Ethic violations and essentially an intern following in the shadow of the Allegheny County Chief Executive. The Mayor is a puppet to the backroom politics that really run the city. He’s real good at running around gittin’ his picture taken while the ethic violations mount.

I don’t think it’s necessarily that McCain is too old. It’s that he’s completely out of touch with what’s going on in this country. It’s that he had the terrible judgment to choose a twit to be VP, particularly when he’s already had significant health problems. Face it, he knows this is his last chance to be elected President (because of his AGE) and he’ll do anything, say anything to get elected. Personally, I don’t want Sarah Palin to be President of this country; I want someone who actually knows what a Vice President does. I want someone who has a clue as to how to fix the economy and keep us safe. That’s not Sarah Palin.

h lash,
If you want to bring pork barrel spending into the picture….
Palin as Mayor requested $27 million for a town of 6,700 (at that time)…
Palin as Governor – requested over $550 million her first year in office – and this year =(still 3 months to go) she requested $198 million… This is in a state with under 700,000 people. This is in a state that has no state taxes and gives it citizens rebates. How did she accomplish that??? By requesting funds from you and I…. The rest of the 49 states paid for those rebates… Who are McCain and Palin going to borrow from when they start deficit spending; like every republican Pres over the last 30 years??? Deficit spending weakens the dollar and reduces your buying power… It only helps multi-national corporations…. When will the everyday Republicans realize big business is using religion to profit… Republicans politicians always claim to be fiscally responsible yet are always deficit spending… By removing the regulations around commercial banking – in what was supposed to save the federal goverment money by cutting spending – it cost us much more in the bail outs…. As I heard on the radio the other day – Republicans do it TO you; Democrats do it FOR you! Here’s to praying for common sense and for self-awareness prevailing.

Posted by: Tripod33 | September 15, 2008, 7:45 am 7:45 am

By the way – major banks are failing… highest foreclosure rates in history… forget about recession this is moving straight towards a depression… Over 600,000 people have lost their jobs this year… Just look at the events surrounding the Great Depression and compare and contrast…
Please don’t try to spin this as a result of Democrats being in control of the House and Senate… As soon as the Democrats took control the Republicans PUBLICLY STATED that they would make sure no piece of meaningful legislation would get passed. Way to put country first…

Age is not a consideration in a presidential candidate only if you are foolish. There is a fine line to walk between using McCain’s age and past cancer treatments as a campaign tool and for these things to be in item of legitimate concern for the American people.
We’ve all seen how the presidency ages everyone that assumes it. McCain will be the oldest person to ever assume the mantle should he win, he has had 3 melanomas removed (and if you saw the service forum it looks like he has a new one coming), and he refuses to release his medical records, save to a select few and even then only an excerpt of the report.
It’s laughable that republicans continue to cry “ageism” when in all reality it’s only common sense to be concerned about this issue. Especially now that McCain has selected Mrs Palen as his running mate. That means that the United States is one melanoma, one heart attack, etc away from having a religious extremist in the oval office. THIS is why I feel conservatives have finally gotten behind McCain. It is not that he will do such a fine job, it’s their hope that he will have a trauma while in office and Palen will be automatically elevated to the office, or should McCain be victorious then Palen could possibly run when McCain is done. THIS, I feel, is the real reason for the surge of support.

Posted by: landlocked | September 15, 2008, 8:07 am 8:07 am

You people calling for Obama’s medical record citing he’s only given a paragraph of it, I believe you have your candidates confused. That was John McCain that only provided a minimal health report.

Posted by: landlocked | September 15, 2008, 8:09 am 8:09 am

Banks are failing, stock are falling, the middle class is hurting like never before, and we want to elect John McCain and Sarah Palin to lead our country out of it..Give me a break..If something where to happen to either Obama or McCain who would you rather see sitting in the oval office Biden, or Palin. I think this causes great concern and people need to wake up and smell the coffee that the Republicans have screwed our country up and its time to let the Democrats have their go around.

Speaking towards Ron’s last two years in the white house, I recall many reporters saying that “there was an “empty suit” in the white house” . Almost every question asked to Ronnie in the Iran-Contra investigation was answered the same way..”I don’t remember”. Ahhhhh the Golden Years. Case Closed.

Read the end of Malcolm X’s Autobiography. After he came back from Mecca he regretted most of his previous work and abandoned the Nation of Islam. That is the reason that the Nation assassinated him. He had this change of heart because he met blonde hair, blue eyed Muslims in Mecca and realized that Allah was no respecter of color. Here’s some advice for some of your future posts: if you don’t know that much about a person you quote, don’t quote them.

How can John McCain’s age not be a legitimate issue?
John McCain 72
VP a “heart beat away”
Sara Palin VP candidate
If you think she would make a great president given the global economic and geopolitical issues coming up, then McCain’s age is not an issue. If you have concerns, like I do, then it is an issue.
Talk about disrespect, Carly — I don’t need you to tell me which issues should be paying attention too.

Let’s face the reality. We all have to die. You can die before McCain or Obama. Who to say that McCain will die before Obama?
McCain is out campaigning more than Obama. He is looking younger everyday. Obama is getting older and older. His hair even turned grey. He complained about jet lag. He has been on holiday more than McCain and Clinton.
The reality is both men are walking, living, breathing. None of them are in their dead bed. And one of them is not qualified to be president.
I’ll vote for the qualified candidate over a younger one who has no clue what to do.

I don’t think John McCain has anything to worry about in this department. If you look at John McCains mom, she is 95.
Barack Obamas dad died at age 46 and his mom died at age 54. His dad was a known alcoholic, research shows that children of alcoholics have a higher rate of becoming alcoholics themselves. Cancer can also run in the genetics of a family. Obama is also a long term smoker and a former drug user.

Sen. John McCain has proved himself to be unqualified and incapable of effectively leading the United States of America into the future by, among other things, his reckless, irresponsible, impulsive, and dangerous judgment in picking Sarah Palin as his running mate. Sarah Palin is a minor distraction not even worthy of discussion. However, Sen. John McCain has shown his contempt for the intelligence of the American people by making this unequivocally cynical decision to use an unknown, untested, and corrupt, serial liar like Sarah Palin to deceive voters into believing he stands for change. Sen. John McCain also disgraced himself by demonstrating a lack of courage in his choice of Sarah Palin at the last moment over much more qualified Republican men and women simply because she appeals to the base of the Republican Party, a group of voters he was going to lose. What Sen. John McCain doesn’t understand is that by appeasing the extreme right wing of the Republican Party, he is going to lose the voters that really count, i.e., moderate and independent voters, and, in doing so, certainly lose the election. Obama/Biden 2008!!!

Sandra: And if McCain is too old how old is your mother. I am sure she isn’t seventeen. Are you aware of the younger people dying, not reaching the age of McCain? Didn’t Tim Russert die in his 50′s? Get a grip. McCain’s mother is in her 90′s and the democrats like you talk of him dying. How do you know how long your going to live. There are young men dying on the basketball court of a heart attack. I believe that John McCain has more knowledge to run this country than Obama will ever have in his lifetime. And Obama is not the celebrity anymore Palin took over.

Monet: If Obama is elected god will have to help us. Help us get out of the disaster he will cause as president. Hopefully that won’t happen because this country needs a president that has the experience and knowledge to run this country and that let’s Obama out on a rim. In fact, Biden is smarter than Obama. What has Obama done in his life besides drugs, booze, on the street organizer (I wouldn’t take bets on it) not for four years but four months. Do you think he would be walking the southside streets for four years. Get real. He didn’t even want to go into Philadelphia. And guess who would be coming to dinner, Wright, Father P., Ayers (his buddy)Rezko (if out of jail)and Farrakhan, all haters of America.

Arlene: That’s a loss cause. Minnesota that was leaning for Obama is now a toss up. McCain is surging in NY and ahead in Ohio. No one is going to pay attention to the website. Palin was in Colorado when Obama was there. And she draws the crowds as big as Obama now. His celebrity status is over and done. Get a life. Palin took over. And wait until she debates Biden. He better be prepared.

anthony: JFK was younger than Obama when he took office and what has Obama really done in his lifetime besides drugs, booze and on the southside streets trying to organize a community. What community are they talking about. He certainly didn’t go into the Englewood neighborhood and I don’t believe he did it for four years. I wouldn’t take bets on it.

Nzone71: You are so right. No one can determine death. And those that say McCain is too old, how old are their parent’s? Young people are dying every day of the week. And your right about his parent’s. The statements made that he was brought up by a single mother is wrong. His mother divorced his father, married a man in Hawaii, divorced him and married a man from Indonesia. She was never on food stamps or welfare. She went to college herself. He was raised by his grandmother who sent him to Harvard college to get an education. By the way his mother sent him to good schools. It was in his younger days he became a racist against his own mother’s race. I read his BIO that was printed in the NYT and it is very interesting. I understand he was never a law professor.

Luke: Let go on record to say that Ronald Reagan was no young president and he did great for this country. o did George Bush, Sr. And if Obama is elected president who knows how long he is going to live, or Biden who is in his 60′s. I believe when it comes to knowledge and experience in running this country Obama doesn’t have either. And as far as politics is concerned he lacks experience in that. He missed the senate over 130 days. Where was he? He was against the war? He wasn’t even in the senate for the voting. He is what you call a sincere liar and people were eating it up. From what I understand he is losing ground. Minnesota is now a toss up state, was leaning towards Obama at one time. McCain is also surging in New York. Obama’s celebrity status is down and out. Palin took over and is doing great.

how about going on record with that and the fact the last president that even came close to balancing the budget was a Democrat.

McCain is still amazing at 72. Obama, when he’s off the teleprompter, press conferences or scripted speeches, stammers and stutters. When live, his thoughts are disorganized and directionless.
Jose,
Leading up to the Iowa caucus I was able to meet and listen to at least 6 of the presidential candidates in person prior to the Iowa caucuses. I was not a Obama supporter at the caucus but I did attend three meetings where he spoke. One of these meetings was small group where there a great deal of interchange between those attending. At each one he took a wide variety of questions from the audience. I can assure you he was not as you describe him (disorganized and directionless). I was impressed with he depth of knowledge and intelligence. Your statement is far from the truth.
