Michigan Independents Cold to Alaska Governor*
The Detroit Free Press invited a panel of Michigan voters to weigh-in on Gov. Sarah Palin’s speech last night. Their reactions run the gamut, but the independents didn’t seem to care for her very much.
Mike Kosh, 38, West Bloomfield independent: “The way it looks to me, she’s the Republican vice presidential nominee for one reason: Because Hillary wasn’t selected.”
George Lentz, 66, Southfield independent: “I was completely underwhelmed. She was a Republican novelty act with a sophomoric script. It was not even a speech I would expect for someone running for the local PTA, much less for vice president.”
Diane Murphy, 42, Sterling Heights independent: “It appears that, once she makes up her mind, that is the end of it. We live in a gray world, not every answer is black and white.”
Jan Wheelock, 58, Royal Oak independent: “Nothing worked for me. I found her barrage of snide remarks and distortions to be a major turnoff. She is not a class act. The most important point she made is that she will be an effective attack dog.”

* Please note that two of the "independents" the Free Press interviewed appear to be anti-war activists, thus not particularly predisposed to have an open mind about Gov. Palin. I had quoted one of them, but have removed her comments.

President Obama Tops Mitt Romney in New Poll
If the Obama campaign and their allies in the MSM want to destroy Sarah Palin, they have their work cut out for them. This woman is as strong in her own way as John McCain. She will attract Democratic women like myself who are no longer comfortable with a party that so easily cast aside a woman who received 50% of the vote in the Primary. I am opposed to many of the positions that Sarah Palin holds. However, those positions pale in comparison to my determination to help shatter the highest glass ceiling. As a 72-year old woman who faced discrimation first-hand in the work place, I intend to support this female candidate for Vice President. When the Democratic Party begins to appreciate the women who make up more than half its membership, I may consider returning to the party of my parents and grandparents.

If these “independents” are satisfied with what has happened in Michigan, led by politicians who have ran the state into the ground ,then so be it.

The most important point she made is that Obama wrote two memoirs and not a single piece of legislation.
“The most important point she made is that she will be an effective attack dog.”
Don’t under rate that. Obama tried it in his speech and almost no one can remember what he said this morning.
Obama who?

I watched her last night. She read a good speech. Which, by the way, was written by Bush’s speech writers. It’s just more of the same wrapped in a different package. The audience was really excited. After all the hoopla is over, then she’s gonna have to provide some answers on her positions and what will she do to fix the economy, healthcare, jobs, energy, gas prices and the like. She came off to me as a comic with a bunch of one liners…kinda like Jay Leno…

Palin introduced herself to the GOP rank-and-file and gave a lot of red meat to the base. But she did nothing to reach out to those beyond the circle of GOP believers. In fact she turned off many with her insulting, snarky style and constant attack. Her candidacy is so fragile yet she took a vicious line of attack. A heartbeat away from being president? Give me a break. She came off as an Alaskan Queen Crab.

And there is jealousy among many women because they didn’t do anything with their life and she accomplished her goals. Her speech was a hit and it will wake up the democrats to think. They thought she was a pushover. No, she is not Hillary who let Obama dominate her over the delegates along with Nancy Pelosi. This woman would give Pelosi and Obama a run for their money and she is no fool. I switched this year from democrat to republican because I don’t like Obama. McCain and Palin are true American’s from the time they were born. We won’t talk about Obama’s love for this country it would take too long.

Ask Sara Palin about her praise for Barack Obama’s energy speech — an why the press release mysteriously disappeared from the Governor’s official web site.
DID A STATE EMPLOYEE REMOVE THIS ITEM AS A FAVOR TO THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN ON TAXPAYER’S TIME?
Oh, and be sure to ask her about her support for the Bridge to Nowhere and how she fully supported the earmark to make it happen and how she even made it part of her campaign for governor when she told resident’s of this tiny island it was insulting to refer to their home as ‘nowhere’.
THEN SHE USED THE SAME ‘INSULTING’ PHRASE TO DESCRIBE THE PROJECT SHE SUPPORTED BEFORE PRETENDING TO BE AGAINST IT.
Finally, you should ask John McCain if Sara Palin’s $27 MILLION haul in federal pork as the mayor of a town of 7000 should be repaid to the American taxpayers.

Brian: We all know that Obama used the speech of JFK for his acceptance and has been using the speeches of RFK on the platform. Experienced and educated. Can’t prove it by me. He is as experienced as a man that can’t read. I thought her speech was terrific and it will wake the democrats up. Didn’t you read what Biden said. I am glad she didn’t go after me. He himself said her speech was good. She shook them up and any woman that doesn’t think so is extremely jealous of the fact they are know nothings, do nothing and say nothing.

Does Sarah Palin know that the USA is fighting a crucial war in Afghanistan?
Apparently not. She never mentioned it.
Do Giuliani, Romney and Huckabee know?
They never mentioned Afghanistan either.
But do the Republicans even notice? No. “Drill, baby, drill!” is what they have to say.
As an Iraq veteran, I’m furious.

Sarah Palin has the toughness of a pitbull. She also has the class of a pitbull, the foreign policy experience of a pitbull, and the intellectual honesty of a pitbull.
Her speech was well delivered, snide, petty, and self-righteous.

Who are you kidding, Jake? These “Independents” are Obama supporters intent on trying to destroy McCain-Palin. I don’t buy into much the MSM says or does these days. The stories are biased, polls are skewed, and interviewees are chosen to prop up the reporters’ chosen candidate -
Barack Obama. The MSM helped to destroy the Clintons, painting them as racists, and now they are trying to destroy Sarah Palin. Barack Obama is the chosen candidate of the American media. Governor Ed Rendell is right. The media coverage in this campaign is an embarrassment. The Detroit Free Press is typical. BTW, my brother and sister-in-law are Independents in Oxford, Michigan, and they thought she was great. If the Detroit Free Press tried hard enough, they might have come up with a couple of Independents who favored Sarah Palin. Of course, that wasn’t their mission, was it? THEIR MISSION WAS TO MAKE THE OBAMA CANDIDACY SEEM INEVITABLE IN ORDER TO DEFLATE REPUBLICAN/INDEPENDENT ENTHUSIASM AND ENCOURAGE ANTI-OBAMA VOTERS TO STAY HOME. A MISSION SHARED BY MOST OF THE MAIN STREAM MEDIA.

During her speech last night, I was floored when Palin accused Obama by saying, “Al Qaida terrorists still plot to inflict catastrophic harm on America, and he’s worried that someone won’t read them their rights.”
Democracy and free society is tricky business. We must not lose our humanity when confronted by those who would do us harm. I don’t want anyone near the White House who thinks the rights of human beings are irrelevant. Ms. Palin sounds like another Rumsfeld.

Her 3,000-word speech was meant to persaude voters to elect another Republican president…yet there was NOT ONE SINGLE MENTION of the Republican president of the last 7 and a half years. Not one single mention of George W. Bush.
How can Republicans ask voters to give them another chance while HIDING their current president? Is there nothing about Bush that Sarah Palin is proud of?
Guess not.

PALIN: “I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending … and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress ‘thanks but no thanks’ for that Bridge to Nowhere.”
THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a “bridge to nowhere.”

PALIN: “There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform _ not even in the state senate.”
THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.

I’m an independent who watched Sarah and Rudy and felt sick to my stomach by them. No way would I vote for McCain.
Does he really think a small town mayor from nowhere could temp Hillary voters, just because she’s a woman? It showed me his poor judgement. We don’t need a man with a good war past, we need a man with a good vision and inspiration.
McCain is not that man.

FORMER ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: Palin “got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States.”
THE FACTS: A whopper. Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor’s election, and got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23 states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the 2008 presidential primaries.

Underestimate Obama at your own risk. He is a a distinguished public servant and a respected United States Senator. A strong family man, and self-made too. A former president of the Harvard Law review, a constitutional scholar, and a foreign policy expert respected around the world. Mock these qualifications at your own risk, ‘hockey mom’.

Conventions are going to have a lot of political hoopla. Palin presented her speech well, but her attempt to shoot down Obama’s Community Organizer experience instead shot down an entire, hard working community. At the opening of the Republican convention, it was all about helping those through the Hurricane and taking off the “Republican” hat and putting on the “American” hat. Community Organizers always have their American hat on. We had more people seeking refuge from the hurricane in our convention center than lived in the town Palin was mayor – we had more evacuees in our state from the Gulf Coast than the population of Alaska. Without the experience, hard work, dedication of our CO’s these people taking refuge could not have had shelter, food or medical assistance. That is A LOT of responsibility and should not be belittled or demeaned in the slightest.

The Democrats have been (rightfully) bashing Bush for 8 years. They did so at the convention. Obama’s whole campaign is based on the notion that McCain is “more of the same” and that he is Bush III. He also argued that Clinton was “more of the same.” Well, now that he’s getting a taste of his own medicine, my fellow democrats are whining. GROW UP. No one has to worship the Lord Obama. You guys chose to do so but the rest of the world does not have to do so. I am glad she punched him in the face. He is a two-faced liar. He said that Clinton lacked judgment because she voted for the war, but then he picks Biden, who voted for the war. Biden also voted for NAFTA and the bankruptcy reform legislation – which Obama blasted Clinton for supporting. Obama will say or do anything to get elected. I’m glad the pitbull with lipstick is going to sink her teeth into him. GO PALIN!

Lets see
we are learning from that enthusiastic speech this morning
she lies.
She lied last night…she was for that bridge not against it…and the state kept the money that her scandalous senator buddy got them.
she lied about the taxes. flat out literally lied.
we are finding out more details today about how she lied about the troopergate investigation
and how she was sued earlier because of firing another official when she was mayor.
we are learning that this woman fights corruption when it is not coming from her.
we do not need another lying administration…
if John Mccain is truthful then Sarah Palin is ridiculous…
she read other people’s words last night …won’t answer questions away from that speech
and anyone who is interested in the truth
Obama writes his speeches and answer q and a’s almost every day about every single issue…with follow ups…
Mccain Palin …not so much.
it’s hard to keep the lie if you have to answer to people…
after 2 years now of Obama answering questions and having his life torn apart (on every level) these two morons (Palin yes is a moron when it comes to the world and our place in it…ugh… we will slowly discover her inability to grasp truth in science and the world in detail…she is ridiculous)
just make Obama and Biden look even smarter. Nothing to do with her beign a woman…it has to do with the fact that she is not smart enough…not knowledgable enough and not truthful enough to NOT be just like GW Bush and VP Cheney.
and yes I have an issue with electing another administration that isn’t smart.

Palin is great theater but not presidential or vice presidential. Let’s not forget she was a beauty queen and a local tv sportscaster. She loves the stage and is good at it.
What sort of judgement does this women have when she thrusts her family,( that is going through all kinds of serious problems) into the media spotlight for her personal gain? She couldn’t wait a few more years for the sake of her family?

I’m stunned that people are complaining that the republicans “belittled” Obama. LOL. The Democrats have belittled Bush and McCain. In fact, they say that McCain is just Bush III. I guess that’s ok, because the Lord Obama said so. But committing blasphemy against Obama – now that’s just wrong. I have to admit, I enjoyed hearing the Republicans cut through his BS. I predicted it would happen a long time ago. This is, of course, what the Repubs did to Bill Clinton. Instead of recognizing this, the “Obama Generation” of Democrats said the Clintons were evil, more of the same, liars, etc. Doesn’t feel nice when the Repubs are now going after your guy…..

your reasoning is what got us George W Bush and the last 8 years.
We do not need an average American hockey mom deciding whether to shoot down commercial airliners and discussing the history of Russian conflicts and NATO as they pertain to Georgia.
We do not need a woman who obviously perceives our energy strategy and future completely based through a lens of oil relationships.

Destroy the country — but shatter the glass ceiling. I am 65 and hope the younger generation will do the shattering. We had our opportunity and many copped out. I worry about my country now. You really want the person to shatter the glass ceiling to have no credentials. She will ruin it for all women.

McCain does not have the temperament to be president. His past has unfortuantely left him a volatile and abusive man.
Sarah Palin does not have the knowledge, judgement, wisdom, or character to be trusted with the security of our nation or it’s economy.
Neither McCain or Palin understand how the american ecomony works.

Jeanne from Michigan – of course it’s not too late for her to introduce herself. She will have lots of time to talk about policy. You are just angry because you hate the republicans. Be objective for a moment. As a strategy, it was far more important for her to come out and personalize herself. Besides, she did talk about policy. She discussed energy policy, cutting taxes (really maintaining tax cuts), ending the war, being pro-life, staying tough on terrorism….stuff we’ve already heard before. If you were not so angered by her committing blasphemy against Obama, perhaps you would have heard her discuss policy.

While I thought Palin did perform a good speech last night, and energized her base, not one person has been able to tell me how John McCain is different now than he was in 2000 that makes him more qualified. I’m not a Republican, so I will gladly give them the credit for nominating George Bush over John McCain in 2000. So, what’s changed now? Only that Republicans will do whatever it takes to win, at whatever the cost. It isn’t John McCain that you want to win, it is your party. I have had to live for the last 10 years with a Republican controlled congress and a Republican president, a president that Republicans preferred to John McCain.
Yes, I support Obama. Yes, I’m voting for someone with little experience… I’m willing to have his mistakes this year, and feel hopeful about our future, than to have the same from a Republican party that does nothing to inspire me, except to tell me to shop and stimulate the economy.
As far as the ATTACKS on Community Organizers, I would argue that some of the best this country has to offer has come from community organizers:
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Susan B. Anthony
Elizabeth Cady Stanton
(just to name a few)
I am for a new vision — a COMPLETELY new vision. Not for a party or affiliation that wants to only slightly change, not for a party that is once again telling me to trust them, when this man wasn’t good enough for them the first time he ran.

I don’t hate all Repubs. I hate THESE Rovian Repubs. I am Indy. I voted for Bush in 2000, because I believed him when he said he would unite this country. This country is more divided than ever. Palin and McCain are seeking to fracture this country in two.
BTW – I voted for McCain in the MI primary. I don’t who this guy is, but he is NOT the man he was in January!!

Sarah Palin is a woman all Americans can be proud of!
Posted by: dl | September 4, 2008, 10:48 am 10:48 am
Jeanne – you keep basing reality on conversations with your friends. Sorry – but that is not a random sample of Americans. If I talked to my friends – which I have – they would say the same thing. We are all pretty much Ivy-educated professionals, living in blue state enclaves. So, of course, they will have negative views of Palin.
But, at the end of the day, the heartland is not wowed by an Ivy-attorney running for president. And having gone to an Ivy law school and knowing so many of them – they do not really impress me either. Americans are conservative by nature, and they want someone they feel connects with them on many basic levels. I think that class, race, religion, and political ideology blend to shape people’s views of the candidates. What someone studied in college and where/whether they went to graduate school does not matter much in the end.
Also, having multiple degrees does not necessarily imply intellect. And again – voters have not historically sought intellectual depth. Adalai Stevenson is the classic example of a losing intellectual. If I had my way, more intelligent people would win — like Hillary Clinton. She was specific, to the point, detailed, and a strong woman, but the party went for flashy, new, unknown, and electrifying — someone who demonized the Clintons as just offering “more of the same.” Well, he’s now getting some of his own medicine. Leaves a bad taste, for sure.
Posted by: angry black democrat | September 4, 2008, 10:49 am 10:49 am
Jeanne – I am not sure you are the independent woman they have in mind. Think working class, moderate-to-conservative women in Ohio, Missouri, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. If you are not in that category, then you are not a part of the target group.

Vote McCain/Palin for the “freedoms” of America.
One national religion (sorry, the rest of you)
One national language (sorry, native americans)
One national culture (no more melting pot)
One political vision (liberalism is bad, conservatism is good)
Guns for everyone (so we all can shoot wolves from helicopters for fun)
More constitutional dismantling (Patriotic Act continued)
More corruption and secretive government.
More conservatives on the Supreme Court bench (overturn Roe v. Wade, and other ridiculous rulings).
More GOP fear and hate-mongering against anyone not like them, more $$$$ for oil companies and the rich, no action on pollution or global warming, more war!
Lets go for it! What the helll…
When exactly IS the point when America can no longer be put back on the right track?

Referring to Sarah Palin as a “beauty queen” and making comments on her appearance only affirms my belief that we have a long way to go before women are given the respect they deserve in this country. Sarah Palin is a Governor of the state of Alaska. Denigrating her appearance, or her positions in the PTA and as a small-town mayor are an insult to women and to small-town residents. These sorts of comments serve to reinforce my decision to vote for the McCain-Palin ticket.

Until the American people wake up, stop complaining and change within themselves, this country will continue on its present heading which is total destruction. The country will never change until the people of this great country leave their respective parties. All of the parties have run this country right into the ground. I am not anti-government, I am anti-self serving, greedy, lying, criminal politicians which by the way are who we have right now in most elected offices. Jeanne, alleged resident of Michigan (yeah, right) tells us Michigan Republicans are not happy with Palin. Really? They must live in a different neighborhood than my brother. His neighborhood in Oxford, Michigan, a small town near Detroit, think she is great. It’s a Republican neighborhood, and they’ve been pumped up since the day she was announced. I don’t know where Jeanne lives (probably San Francisco), but she doesn’t speak for all of Michigan.

What I also noticed was the economy was rarely mentioned and George Bush was NEVER mentioned.

It’s reassuring to see swing state voters seeing through this red-meat-attack garbage from the Republicans. Sarah Palin is a great person but she simply is not qualified to be a heartbeat away from the presidency. She can deliver sarcastic zingers written for her by Bush’s speech writer and she can fire up her fellow Christian conservatives– but she and the Republicans have no issues or good plans to run on.
Also, she lied. She lied about her supposed “reformer” credentials (she was all over the earmarks and the bridge to nowhere) and she lied about Obama’s tax plan (which will REDUCE taxes for the middle class and small businesses.)

Biden would have to lead Bozo around by the hand and McCain/Palin is the perfect choice.
Too bad Lib media dosen’t understand that by SHOVING B. Hussein down our throats since Feb……we are so sick of it and that alone has had a backlash….now if any Palin bashing gets out of hand, I predict that too will backlash and more voters will move to McCain/Palin.

I am a moderate Democrat who believes in protecting the environment, sustaining Social Security and other social programs. In this election, I have made a decision to send a message to the Democratic Party: ignore and denigrate women at your peril. The Democratic Party does not deserve my support. Hillary Clinton received 50% of the vote in this election, and she should have been named as the vice-presidential candidate. Had her name been Harold Clinton, there would be no question where she would be right now. The ticket would be Obama-Clinton, and I’d be voting for it.

Dottie, it is your vote. But vote at YOUR peril. McCain plans to privatize the health insurance industry. This is the MOST dangerous thing that can happen to this nation. When they “privatized” the banking system, they gave us the mortgage meltdown and sky high interest rates.
Under McCains plan, people with pre-exisiting condiitions will be place into a “high risk” pool. They will only be able to afford insurance if they are VERY wealthy and the insurance co will NOT have to cover them. I am a cancer survivor, my son is type 1 diabetic. We will both be dead.

McCain made an irresponsible choice in Palin. Yes – she made a good speech. However, giver her background in radio and pagentry, it was expected. She is NOT AT ALL ready to lead the country should the need arise. I also would urge Hillary supporters to heed her wishes to vote Democrat. We haven’t seen the last of Hillary – and to vote Republican in this election will just create a bigger hole that will need to be climed out of in 2012 when she runs again. Party unity is key right now….vote Obama/Biden ’08.

Jeanne – Your volunteer work is impressive and important. But where’s the decision-making — if someone doesn’t like what you do, who holds you accountable? How often do you have to build consensus across wildly disparate interests? How often do you have to balance short-term vs long-term strategies? When do you make decisions that will benefit some people and hurt others? … mayors do, governors do, presidents do. Do you?

I guess the New Dems can’t find one issue to defend, attack etc. So go after the kids, then say “We’re not doing it.” Well maybe you all can get it together and hold out suspense, like BO did to the DEMS for VP, to present something FLAT by Nov. McCain’s suspense, which did NOT have me on the edge of my seat, got me hooten and hollerin with glee when she spoke last night. Yeah Palin made me happy. Obama makes me SICK.

Four years ago, after GW was reelected, the British newspaper the Daily Mirror asked, “How could 59,054,087 people be so stupid?” Our country’s political, economic and cultural experience during the last four years suggests that headline wasn’t too far off the mark, although I would replace the word “stupid” with “gullible.”
Well, I’ve listened to and watched the new McCain/Palin show, and I cannot help but wonder whether most of that 60 or so million Republican voters find this new/old “divide and conquer,” cynicism based campaign narrative acceptable. Clearly, the “new” McCain/Palin show seems to be all about division of the electorate, of the country, and of the culture, and once again the Republican leaders appear to cynically believe we Americans will fall for it again.
Irrespective of whether anybody votes for the Obama/Biden ticket, I want to believe that this time we Americans can see through the deception, divisiveness and cynicism the McCain/Palin/Bush/Rove ticket represents. I want to believe that we Americans, a group much more informed than four or eight years ago, will refrain from giving foreign newspapers any more fodder for “stupid Americans” headlines. Now some will say who cares about foreign newspapers? My reply is that sometimes, in the thick of it, someone outside of the fray has to be the one to tell the emperor that he has no cloths.

Palin as mayor of Wasilla hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capital request in the nation.

ok so let me get this clear, people are offended because she says that a community organizer does not make your qualified, but they are not offended by people saying that a Govenor and Mayors responsibilities are irrelevant. I don’t care if it is the mayor of 3 people or the govenor of 2 people, your decisions affect peoples lives good or bad you have to make difficult decisions. Just step back and look at the undertaking that the mayor and govenor of Louisiana had this weekend, was that irrelevant. Look at what happened during Katrina, when the Mayor and the Govenor didn’t do their jobs, was that irrelevant, they make tough decisions each and every day. on issues such as Education, Health and Human Services, Energy, Transportation, etc. Every Federal Government Department that we have, there is a local and State department, why do you think so many lawmakers fight for states rights and to have decisions made on the state and local level, because they are closer to the people, they are on the ground. If it’s one thing that I’ve learned from this entire election process it’s that our education system is seriously lacking, they need to have a mandatory course in Politics and Government, in high schools, since the voting age is 18, so that young adults can understand the fundamentals of government and politics. This is ridiculous that so many people are ignorant to the process and the responsibilities of the different branches.

“This woman would give Pelosi and Obama a run for their money and she is no fool. I switched this year from democrat to republican because I don’t like Obama. McCain and Palin are true American’s from the time they were born.”
If this woman is so tough, why doesn’t she come out of hiding and answer some actual questions about her record off the cuff instead of reading from a boiler plate Republican script that was written by McCain’s Rovian advisors?
By the way, I was a Republican who became a Democrat because of George Bush. I don’t see McBush (er, I mean McCain) to be any different.
Essentially, Sarah Palin is Dan Quayle in a dress. Can’t wait until she starts talking about how it was “God’s will” for us to preemptively invade Iraq.
Dems will win the election this time on the basis of new voter registrations. So those of you who don’t want 4 more years of Bush, let’s get to work to ensure the right wing propaganda does not sink in like that Iraq WMD propaganda did.
By the way, John McCain wasn’t actually born in America per se, he was born in the Canal Zone.
Enough of the attacks on Obama’s patriotism. He is a true American, and is not an elitist (that one REALLY makes me laugh). Unlike John McCain with his rich background, his $500 shoes and his eight houses.
And one last thing lest we forget. To all you moralists out there who cannot see the hypocrisy in these family values right wingers who preach one thing, but then end up with teenage, pregnant daughters in their own home, remember that Mr. war hero McCain divorced his first wife while she was suffering from a terminal illness, only to remarry an attractive younger woman with money.

The Obama campaign is going to raise one important question: “Folks, haven’t we had enough of these culture wars? Haven’t we had enough of Karl Rove and George Bush trying to divide people? We’ve had eight years of it. You want more?”
It’s that simple. And a party–the GOP–that runs and hides from its past eight years and then pretends to be about change–that party is damaged.

When the Democratic Party begins to appreciate the women who make up more than half its membership, I may consider returning to the party of my parents and grandparents.”
With the utmost respect, isn’t that a bit silly? The Democrats nominated a woman for VP 24 years ago. Hillary wasn’t done out of her nomination, it wasn’t taken away from her, she simply lost by a few hundred delegates, and as much as I like her (I voted for her on Super Tuesday) I have to say it’s because she ran a very poor campaign.
If you vote for McCain and Palin just because Hillary lost and Palin is a woman you will be voting against everything Hillary has worked for, and buying into a very cynical ploy by the Republican Party…which is betting you cannot tell the difference between one woman and another.

Sarah, et al keep trying to paint the Dems as big tax, big government liberals. Republicans don’t like taxes (on rich people) but they sure love fat government contracts and privatizing wars that become very lucrative to their friends. They don’t like big government but under Bush, they made sure to steal as many civil liberties as they could and claim unlimited privelege for the president. How do we get things like roads, bridges, levees, and schools paid for, anyway — could it be . . . taxes? Let the repubs pretend to be against big government for another four years and I guarantee that what we’ll get is bad government, more starvation rations for schools and infrastructure, and a country that won’t invest in itself and will fall yet further behind.

For eight years we had a person with executive experience in charge of this country, and boy, he screwed things up, big time. And McCain was right by his side, 90% of the time.
I guess Putin is salivating in Kremlin at the possibility of dealing with McCain/Palin beacuse he knows that McCain is all bark and no bite, (all the troops are roasting in Irak) while Palin’s experience, living seven times zones away from Moscow counts for zilch.

Hillary Clinton got 18M votes!?! How does the Democratic party not appreciate women candidates? The Dems actually VOTED for a woman. McCain is a Republican candidate who selected a woman to run. One Repub picked her. 18M Dems picked Clinton. This election has to be about the issues. There is too much at stake.
As a political speech, I thought Gov Palin impressed for sure last night. But, it was v light on policy. And, when she did talk about national issues/policies, I thought she came across as someone who was speaking about these things for the first time on a national stage. I still have serious reservations about her ability to serve as President if necessary. I’m open to giving her the chance over the next 60 days or so, but she has to make the case. Amazing, but predictable how all the fringe PUMAs and right wingers are coming to the defense of their gimmicky VP selection. If McCain wanted a woman on the ticket, he might’ve selected Susan Collins or Olympia Snowe or Kay Baily Hutchinson; all strong, accomplished women and Snowe and Collins could actually attract my vote. Palin has never even been out of the country save for a visit to the Alaskan National Guard troops in Iraq. Gimme a break. Why is Johnny McInsane so afraid of strong women?
I’m voting for the self made guy who had the judgement to select an emminently qualified VP and is looking to address my economic worries. Obama gets foreign policy naturally. Sarah Palin became mayor of a town with about 5000 people in 1996. When she came into office Wasilla had no debt. When she left office in 2002 it was $22 million in debt mainly because of the hockey rink/sports complex she championed that never has become the money generator she promised it would be. It’s a white elephant money pit brought to Wasilla by another white elephant.
She angered so many people in town with her heavy handed ways she was forced to hire a town administrator and turn over the day to day operations to him or face a recall.
As governor she’s running up huge debts to pay for the profligate spending of her Republican legislature by issuing bonds Alaskans will get stuck paying off in the future. Alaska gets 89% of it’s revenues from taxes on oil just like an Arab kingdom and Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela. With oil prices going sky high the state has seen a mountainous windfall surplus coming in from oil taxes over the 18 months she’s been governor and instead of using it to pay for all the wild spending her cronies want she plans on blowing it on tax giveaways she’ll take credit for while sticking Alaskans and federal taxpayers with the bill in the future.
Alaska for decades has gotten more federal pork per capita than any other state in the union thanks to her good buddies indicted senator Ted Stevens and congressman Don Young. After she hired one of Jack Abramoff’s friends to lobby for tiny Wasilla in Washington it got $27 million dollars in federal pork. Three of those projects even made McCain’s own wasteful spending list. But even with $27 million in pork and the booming Clinton economy for most of her years as mayor from 1996 to 2002 she left the town $22 million in the red.
We can’t afford Palin anymore than we can afford McCain. Sarah Palin should once again choose life, outside of Washington.

Palin will become an object
of ridicule just like
Dan Quayle.
In competence and intellect,
Quayle and Palin are in the
same league.
Why is she afraid of freely
interacting with the media?
Here’s one reason. If she
says things like, “The Iraq
war is God’s Plan”, you know,
they are not going take kindly
to that kind of bizarre statement.

Victor Shaw says he is voting BO because Biden is emminently more qualifed to be VP….what? He’s more qualified to be at the top of your ticket and even said to us Obama is not ready and looks good and clean and is articulate for an African American. Getting asbestos removed from a building, as community organizer and voting “present” 130 times in the senate doesn’t sell me. Bozo lost me with Wright…and it just went down from there. I’m with Hillary and Biden….Obama just has a speech from 2004 and isn’t ready.

5% of the GOP delegation was Hispanic, the lowest percentage since 1996.

“Jeanne…..SOME OF US WANT LESS GOV. TELLING US WHAT TO DO….THAT’S SOCIALISM, WHAT YOUR BOY IS PEDDLING.
Give me the freedom to choose my own health insurance….check with Canadians.”
What an oxi-moron, you want less government but you are willing to bring in a woman who wants to abolish abortion, hence dictating to each and every woman in the U.S. that the government is going to make that choice for them, except in a case where a woman’s life is in danger. In the case of incest or rape, you have no choice. Yep, freedom alright to make personal choice.
Being Canadian I and the majority of Canadian do NOT want your system of health care, heck most of the world doesn’t want your system of health care. When are you all going to realize that you need some mega changes in order to get the international respect that the U.S. use to have before BUSH… I can’t believe you would be so unintelligent to go down that route again, after watching last night, (shaking my head). It’s up to you, no shirt off my back but it sure as heck is to all of you. Keep your economy low, keep losing your homes, keeping fighting a ridiculous lie of a war… vote for the lies of the Republicans… what a bunch of theatrics.
Last night, was more of a mud-flinging than anything else.

Palin is a fraud as any review of her record will demonstrate:
Her lies on the Bridge to Nowhere; Her connections to indicted Sen. Ted Stevens’ 527 PAC; Her (ab)use of Earmarks getting millions for her small town with the use of a Jack Abramoff-linked LOBBYIST; and her record as mayor that shows a Bush/Cheney-esqe demand for loyalty oaths! … from the City Librarian and Police Chief? Are you kidding me?
Now she is refusing to testify in an investigation over her potential abuse of power … firing the Public Safety Commissioner when he wouldn’t fire her former brother-in-law. Real classy …
So lets see, Palin is a Liar and a fraud who is under investigation … A perfect Bush/Cheney Republican.

She is a religious fanatic. She has the mindset of 17th century and therefore, she is not worthy to be a 21st VP.
Last night, it was evident that she was out of touch with the ordinary people in the remaining 49 states when she mocked the community organizers. Here is a religious fanatic who talks about ordinary workers, but doesn’t know anything about the community work by ordinary people. This person is a hypocrite and an insult to all women.
Finally, The new Republican Party led by McCain/Palin is ultra-conservative. They have decided to fight the Democrats on conservative issues rather than important issues facing the country now. They are hoping that rural America will fall for their gimmick and vote for them for the third time in a row. The mocking of community organizers and other subtle insults were meant to send signals to her supporters and Democrats that from hereon on, the Republicans are going to make culture the main issue of this election. They don’t care about the welfare of Americans.

John McCain still suffers grievously from his war wounds and torture he was subjected to in Vietnam. While his mother may be a hardy 96 years old his father and grandfather both died of sudden heart attacks, his father at age 71, his grandfather at 60. McCain with his angry, hothead, type A personality turned 72 the other day.
Ask yourself if you want a Vice President who is a hardcore ideologue, has no foreign policy experience, no Washington experience, with a penchant for making enemies (ask both Republicans and Democrats in Alaska) who has governed a state with less than 700,000 people in it for less than 2 years.
No way.

I’m amazed at how much people are ignoring Palin’s history of raising taxes. She raised sales taxes as mayor of Wasilla, and raised oil taxes as governor, so she could give money directly to Alaska’s citizens as a “fuel subsidy”. And as governor, she also authorized $600,000 for an ultimately failing effort to keep afloat a state-run dairy business, firing the supervising board to make it happen because they preferred shuttering the money-loser without throwing away more state money.
Sounds like a woman who’s against big government except when she’s for it; or it least except when big government helps her friends.

So Dorothy, you’re willing to give power to a party which will deny a woman’s right to choose, a party which finds wars an acceptable (and God’s will) situation, which wants to (in a feeding frenzy screaming “DRILL NOW!”) drill offshore and put alternate energy solutions secondary and which will disenfranchise the growing numbers of people different from them? I saw so few people of color at the convention in St. Paul and find that to be an appalling fact. America is changing.
Your bitterness over Hillary’s loss has obviously clouded your reason. Sarah Palin brings NONE of the Clinton values to the Republican ticket. Her limitations are too numerous to mention, and McCain’s age makes it probable, were he to win, that she might end up president. Is that really what you want for your children and grandchildren? Palin’s speech was nothing but snide comments, flippant jokes, and personal attacks. She delivered her pre-prepared speech well, at least she beats Bush and McCain on that one, but where was ANY mention of what she would do for me? or my neighbor? Zero policy in a speech from a party with zero policy accomplishments. I did notice that Sarah Palin is being googled a lot today, so that’s good. At least people will learn about the REAL Sarah Palin: the one against abortion at any cost, the one who worked for Ted Stevens, currently under indictment for fraud, the one who got $23M in earmarks for a village of 6000, the one who’s husband was a member of the Alaskan Independence Party – who wants to secede from the Union, the one who belongs to a RADICAL church – where just 2 weeks ago while she was in attendance spoke about God’s wrath destroying Israel, the one who was adamantly FOR the Bridge to Nowhere before the thing started to stink and THEN she was against it — but still took the money for her own pork projects, the one who inappropriately retaliated against her brother-in-law and had him fired from the police force, etc.

McCain had two choices. His instinct was to tack to the center and compete for the undecideds. Lieberman was his first choice and would have been a sound one, second perhaps only to Colin Powell. But the base would have none of it, threatening a floor fight over the VP slot. His only remaining choice was to play solely to the base, ala 2004. Even there he could have probably done better than Palin; Huckabee comes to mind. But at least with Palin he made a half-hearted attempt to woo PUMAs and undecided females. Alas, apparently to no avail, given the steady migration of undecideds towards Obama since the announcement. Perhaps he can console himself with the knowledge that the Party, rather than himself, lost the thing…

A million right-wing extremists fake posting as “PUMAs” won’t change the fact that Palin alienated the vast majority of independents with last night’s red meat, no beef speech. Here’s the short version:
Before McCain selected Palin, I didn’t have much doubt about his judgement. Since he has a history of cancer/health issues and is 72 years old, I now have doubts about his judgement because I don’t think picked someone who meets his self-proscribed standard of being the most qualified person in the GOP to serve as his second in command.
Last night’s speech did very little to aleviate my serious concerns about Gov Palin’s readiness to serve as commander-in-chief if McCain gets sick or worse, God forbid, while in the white house. More and more, it looks like the selection of Gov Palin was a political calculation to win votes. It sickens me to think this is the case.
Posted by: Paul | September 4, 2008, 1:56 pm 1:56 pm
Debra – Not to pick nits but Palin’s popularity rating is in Alaska. Three electoral votes last time I checked. Whereas Obama’s is, I believe, nationwide which rather trumps it. Math and facts are such troublesome things…

I watched Sarah Palin’s speech last night, and agree with the independent commentators who thought her comments were snide and self-serving. One speech does not make a great candidate. In addition, her views are extreme, with a pro-life stance that is right of Attila the Hun, an anti-gay, anti-woman, and anti-government stance that makes Pat Buchanan very proud. (watched the speech on MSNBC) Moreover, she is no reformer, contrary to the spin that accompanies her persona. Her town, Wasilla, gained over $27 million in earmarks during her reign, which is over $4,000 for every person living there! She was also FOR the “bridge to nowhere” before she was against it. How anyone could support McCain/Palin when they represent such extreme positions is beyond me.

TO Dorothy,
The Democrats currently have a woman as the 3rd in line for the presidency in Nancy Pelosi and put a woman on the presidential ticket over 25 years ago. The Republicans and their policies pale in comparison. Hilary Clinton’s years of hard work and grasp of the issues is so far superior than Palin’s, why would you want to reward her with the presidency?
The only thing Palin’s speech proved last night was that the allegations of her abuses of power are perfectly plausible.

When Barrack attacked her experience as a small town mayor, Sarah simply stated small time mayors are kind of like community organizers with responsibilities.
This is essentially true, yet the Barrack organization is spinning this an attack on community organizers throughout the land.
Don’t both mayors and community organizers try to do what is best for their communities?
Don’t mayors have more responsibilities?

No, mayors and community organizers do not do the same thing. Mayors work more often with businesses in the area and put themselves in a position to get elected and get re-elected. They might work with the community but usually opt to work with the people who have money; i.e. at the top.
Community organizers on the other hand work with and for the people right on the ground and have no pretense to please businessmen or voters.

I would suggest you look a little harder for michigan independents. What you call your self is not that important what you believe in is. Do you want a better life for your children. Do you want to live in a country you can be proud of. There is not a Republican or a Democrate that can make my life better or my children I take on that responsibility myself. I teach my children to work hard,to be honest, and above all to be proud of themselves. To think I would vote for some because they are female or because they are Black or because they are a veteran would be the total oppisite of what I want to teach my children. So stop trying to convince me to vote for Obama because of his race or Palin because she is a women or MCcain because he is a P.O.W Vetern and convince me Who is best for my childrens future.

The mayor of a small town does not handle all the responsibilities when a city administrator is hired as was Sarah Palin’s case. In our town the mayor does not have a vote and does not run as a party member. I feel that a community organizer has far more responsibility. The elected official is always going to help those who will elect him. The community organizer has the responsibility to help all those in need.

You guys are pathetic. If you want to counter arguments made deservedly so by Americans you should do more homework.

Palin came across as mean and hateful. She may mobilize the right-wing base, but it’s going to backfire on the center. And when it becomes widely known that she tried to ban library books in Wasilla, she’s going to get even worse for her.
McCain made a huge mistake in picking her.

How dumb does the ultralib Big Media think the American people are? “Independents.” Yeah, right.
Code Pink freaks. Anti-war protesters. Yeah, we’d never have checked out that stuff.
And they wonder why the media got slammed over and over last night. “What, us — biased?” they all whined on CNN today.

Watching the Republican convention has been a surreal, through the looking glass experience. In 2000 I was a McCain supporter and volunteer. I was so disgusted by the Bush tactics in South Carolina that year that I became deeply skeptical of the Republican party in general and the Bush cadre in particular.
Watching the Republican party’s embrace of George Bush and what I saw as empty and divisive rhetoric was jarring and somewhat disorienting. Why were supposedly intelligent people so willing to believe the big lie? Yet that expereince was trivial compared to the run up to the Iraq invasion. With a built in distrust of the Bush administration there was never a second where I believed the case for the war.
If the 2000 election was jarring the run-up to the Iraq war was something approaching a nightmare. It was as if the world as I understood it was turned upside down. The so-called loyal opposition and the watchdog media were nowhere to be found. As someone who had never bought into the lies to begin with it seemed to be a relentless cacophony of ugly sloganeering based on the simple notion that, ‘Good Americans are with us – bad Americans are against us.’ No substance, a brazen disregard for the truth, and a style of argumentation that favors neurolingusitic deception and gotcha over deliberation and honest debate.
It’s sad to say that it has taken the cumulative failures of Iraq, Katrina, Guantanamo Bay, and the economy to embolden people to stand up to the lies and Orwellian double speak of the Bush administration. Watching this year’s Republican convention has been like watching a viral outbreak of a style of political communication that I wrongfully assumed was in retreat. Hadn’t good intentioned people all over the political spectrum learned something essential about the need for truth and honest debate in our democracy?
Yet, on display all week we see wall to wall professional conservatives resorting to their favorite playbook; character assassination, false innuendo, a brazen disregard for facts, and a concerted effort brand disagreement as disloyalty. From the stage; speaker after speaker whipping the auditorium into a frenzy by pandering to the worst instincts of a group of unquestioning adherents. Scarcely a word spoken about the significant challenges’ our country faces – just red meat being thrown to the ultra partisans.
Gov. Palin was sold as a refomer and a maverick. Her performance Wednesday night shouts out that she is neither. By picking up the Bush/Rove playbook she has demonstrated her willingness to submit Americans to the divisive wedge politics of 2000 and 2004. In 2000 I learned, deep in my soul, to distrust George Bush. It is a distrust that has served me well. I’m proud that I never fell for his BS -just as I will never fall for Ms. Palin’s.
As Dennis Kucinich said; “Wake-up America.” Before it’s too late.

How can those leaning right or on the right suggest that this is acceptable. Policy and ideology aside, how can you support a candidate or campaign that openly and willingly admits they will not discuss policies and issues on the merit put forward, but rather use the tired politics of character assassination and division? I mean, if I were super rich ($300,000 per/yer) I may very well vote for the republican ticket, however, I would not stand by the sort of tactics or rhetoric that party espouses. It is amazing!

I thought her speech was a jeering rant. If she wanted to bring in more people to her side, she obviously would have prepared a different speech. Her purpose is to galvanize the Republican base. She has accomplished that mission well, I think. However, I think independent or undecided voters will see that she was putting on a good show without revealing her past, nor talking about substantive policy issues. Obama appears to be a serious thinker who has good ideas on reforming the mess we’re in now. Look back at the last eight years. Do you really want a continuation of the divisiveness in our government. What would it accomplish?

i think it is very offensive of the republicans to nominate a vice president based on gender or religion. we are talking about a very real possibility this woman may be president if mccain should die. this is very serious. she can’t even go on the sunday morning shows how is she going to be president?

Hello,
‘Pinko’ what century are you people living in? Funny how progressives don’t refer to Republicans as ‘Facists’ when they disagree with a Democratic candidate. Although a one-party system would be considered so. Once again you can’t disagree with the current administration without someone calling you a name and questioning your loyality to America. Sarah Palin keeps touting the dollar amount of the budget that she’s handled in the past as Mayor. I work in an industry where her entire budget for her town in Alaska was our payroll budget for one year in our sector. Is that suppose to be impressive?
Posted by: Mollie | September 4, 2008, 5:01 pm 5:01 pm
JOhn should read the whole article, not the snippets Maddow & Co. are trying to beat her over the head with. She has a lot of Jewish support. The Republican Jewish Coalition likes her and so does AIRPAC. She has an Israeli flag in her office.

Hey Mollie, how about the 11 BILLION state of Alaska budget? She IS the gov now not a mayor, catch up. All written by “progressives” which is bizarre since they espouse ideology that has never worked anywhere.

Bill:
The lobby is called AIPAC. Jews are not one issue voters. We love Israel, but we are also committed to social issues which Palin and most Republicans are completely on the wrong side of. Palin is completely anti-Science, she would have birth control banned (seems to be banned in her household), has attempted to have books banned, and has not rejected the invective of her pastor who said that Kerry supporters are not going to heaven. What is that all about? A pastor in her church also said that terrorism against Israelis is payback to Jews for not believing in Jesus. Jews should be very fearful of Sarah Palin or as the ticket should now be called “McPalin”.

Sarah Palin took a town with $0 debt in 1996 and left it $22 million in the hole in 2002, mostly from the hockey rink/sports complex she shoved down their throats which never became the money generator she promised it would. Another white elephant from another white elephant.
Even with the stable Clinton economy during most of her mayoral tenure and Jack Abramoff’s crony she hired to lobby Washington to help her now indicted buddy Ted Stevens ring up $27 million in federal pork for tiny Wasilla (pop. 5000 when she entered office) she still managed to leave the town swimming in debt. Three of her pork projects even made McCain’s own wasteful spending list.
The following organization is the offshoot of President Reagan’s Private Sector Survey on Cost Control started in 1984, also known as the Grace Commission. Definitely not a Dem friendly group but even these guys apparently think Alaska is America’s welfare queen state.

As governor she is borrowing from Alaska’s future while she wants to blow today’s Alaskan windfall oil tax bonanza and the huge surpluses they’ve generated on bread and circuses tax giveaways.
Alaska gets 89% of it’s operating budget from taxing oil coming out of the ground just like Arab kingdoms and Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela. They have no state income or sales tax up there. Instead of using that windfall to pay for all the profligate spending her Republican legislature keeps sending her she’s issuing bonds to pay for it which Alaskans and US taxpayers will have to pay off in future years while she takes credit for tax “rebates” while she’s governor.
Her fiscal policy is a disaster in the making which won’t hit til she’s left the governor’s office. She’d be a disaster as Vice President especially to a President who despite his grevious wounds and type A personality is already past the age his father and grandfather died of sudden heart attacks.
She can put on all the lipstick she wants but her political record is for the dogs.

It seemed to me that the “media” the Republicans are complaining about, all thought she was wonderful.
I found her speech lacked substance, was petty and vindictive. But now she seems to be this media darling.
I would like to say that Americans aren’t fooled by these low brow tactics, but I can’t. America reelected GW?! I can see how many Americans will listen to the crap she spews and say “we probably shouldn’t vote for Obama”. It’s sad, but I believe a real possibility of this exists. Too bad America doesn’t WAKE UP!!

Little doubt that Palin knocked one out of the park for the party faithful. But for the serious (undecided, independent) listener, more than a few of her remarks came across as overly clever, even mean. She simultaneously tried to occupy the high ground while demonstrating that she was ready to roll in the mud. She may be a political outsider, but she is no stranger to politics.
The question that has been gnawing at the back of my mind since McCain announced his pick: Should Palin have accepted? At first, I thought, of course, when you get the nod, you step up. Regardless of your personal circumstances, when you get the call to serve your country, you rise to the occasion. That is the selfless act. After her speech, however, I have revised my opinion. Palin is grossly underqualified. The selfless act would have been for her to first to admit that to herself, then to tell McCain as much, directly. She could have put it diplomatically, telling him that he had many immensely qualified and electable people to choose from, and that she was unlikely to inspire much confidence in anyone but the far-right conservatives, who were going to vote for him anyway.
It appears that Palin’s hubris prevented her from telling McCain the straight talk he needed to hear. This lack of humility may very well cost GOP the election.

If anyone took time to do some fact checking on this so-called focus group they would know two of the six are members of Code Pink and another is a known enviro activist… not exactly a focus group that is made up of true independents or should be the stuff of major network headlines….
Of course, in their love affair with Barrak Obama why let balanced and honest reporting get in the way.

Jeff H,
I actually knew that and mis-typed. Since she’s not imposed any of those things as governor your contention is she will as VP? Strong religious views don’t make her “anti-science”. How long a list of religious scientists do you want? The stupid payback comments came from an invited speaker not a pastor at the church. I don’t think he’s been invited back. I never said jews were one issue voters. That’s your strawman. It seems to me secularists have been more of a danger to jews in the last 70 years than Christians.

you want to talk about what she did as mayor, then let’s talk about what biden did as a senator and o!bama did as a community organizer.
you want to talk about what she did as governor, then let’s look at what biden did… as a senator and o!bama did as a state senator.
you want to talk about what she did with the budgets at either level, then let’s look at what biden did… as a senator and o!bama has done as a senator.
in all cases, only one person was directly responsible to the people who voted both for and against them.
and only one person has been directly involved in public safety on more than one level of government.
i wouldn’t be surprised to learn only one of them knows how to handle a gun and thinks you should own one – just like our Founding Fathers.

Cinna,
Lack of hubris? Where’s her personal seal, her Berlin speech, her 2 memoirs at the ripe age of 47, her Greek columns? She’s a self-made woman. She’s more qualified for VP than BHO is to be President.

I live in Michigan and have supported Senator Obama over the past 18 months (as has most of my entire family), but others at my place of work who were not supporting Senator Obama yet wanted to hear Sarah Palin speak last night. Well, I have to say as of this morning Senator Obama has 14 more supporters as Sarah Palin did NOT impress any of them (10 women and 4 men), no wonder Senator Obama has raised over 10 million since last night…..he will win in Michigan.

I suspect a lot of these former Hilary supporters who’ve switched to McCain/Palin were GOP plants in the first place who liked the novelty of a woman running for office. They were never progressives. In their hearts, they were always part of the GOP base, and now they’ve returned to the GOP taskmasters to await further orders.

More nasty attacks, and some very personal mocking, this won’t resonate with female voters, only white trash from woods. Watch the republicans not even get a bounce, prob a loss in polls…
Didn’t even talk about issue #1,(economy) spent all their time attacking another American. Thats not gonna solve our problems
Posted by: Kenaida | September 4, 2008, 10:04 pm 10:04 pm
How can any true supporter of Hillary switch to the Republican party? Palin stands for exactly the opposite of what Hillary did. Does that mean that you only cared about Hillary because she’s a woman? Or does it mean that you’re petty enough to back someone whose beliefs you disagree with simply because you feel like your candidate got screwed over? How is that going to help our country? How would voting for someone simply because of their gender or skin color help the nation? Wake up, people. The only person you should consider voting for is the person whose beliefs most closely match your own. For me, that equals Obama. If you don’t have beliefs then don’t vote…

Just vote for a third party candidate. It really is that simple.
Either Nader or Barr offer more substance than these two nincompoop tickets combined.
These are the two most hilarious tickets the GOP & Dems have ever fielded.
I find myself almost insulted by the two choices they are offering in 2k8.

Two of those “independents” are members of Code Pink, and Lentz is a member of “Social Justice” group that is avowedly anti-war and pro gay marriage.
I’m impressed: you managed to find lefties who don’t like Palin. What’s the next trick? Locating some Klansmen who don’t like minorities?
Is there anybody left in the media with more than three operating brain cells? Don’t you realize that this sort of half-assed reporting only helps the Republicans?

Ms. Palin can sure read a speech written for her by someone else. However, I could take only so much of her voice and her condescending attitude before I had to shut her off. No, never, not in a million years. Pack her up and send her back to Alaska.

secondly, she misuses power
lastly, she is saintly

It is offensive for the Republicans to nominate a VP candidate based on her gender or religion, but it is all OK for the Democrats to nominate someone for the President who has zero experience and “did I mention he is black”? Wake up, people. History of him being the first black man being elected to the highest office will not help to reduce the price of oil, food, repair roads and bridges, strengthen our military etc. His program will, but from what I can see he is weak and undecisive on pretty much anything and everything. His economic program is more of the same bs Democratic policy we have been seeing during Carter years. His team of 300 foreign policy advisers needed three days to come up with a proper draft about Georgia. He is spending his raised money faster than he can raise it.

What I am reading has been quite pleasing to me. As someone who has made up his mind for Obama, it is hard to be objective sometimes when watching these speeches. I was sure Republicans would love Palin and Dems would hate her, and also thought independents would be turned off. What I have been reading and hearing is proving that to be accurate. I thought her speech was way too negative, disrespectful and sarcastic, especially for an introductory speech to the nation – huge mistake. The media is playing nice because she read the prepared speech well, but it has been very overrated. She will lose McCain more votes than she will get him.

Jake, it is barely laudable that you have *noted that two of the independents were actually Code Pink members, and so, therefore, not independents at all. But do you really believe that a footnote is sufficient to rehabilitate this bogus story? It seems to me that your credibility is at stake here.
They were intentional plants, Jake, and so this whole exercise by the Detroit Pree Press is completely suspect! How could you not conclude that at a minimum the process the Detroit Free Press used to select representative “independents” was comletely corrupted? How can you, therefore, continue to give it any credibility at all?
Jake, I have followed your blog with interest, but you are simply being taken apart on some other sites.
Are you going to join Dan Rather and say it was “fake but true?”
Posted by: Trochilus | September 5, 2008, 12:48 pm 12:48 pm
Jake,
You are losing your entire credibility over this. Time to cut and run!
A third “independent” on the Detroit Free Press (DFP) panel — who you quote — is a man named George Lentz, a liberal activist professor who has been engaged anti-Iraq war activism, and gay marriage activism. Check out the NRO blog, “ABC Touts Anti-Palin ‘Independents’ Who Are Actually Anti-war Activists” by John McCormack.
The writer of the original DFP story conceded that many of the so-called the “independents” had been given by people in the newsroom to an administrative aide to put on the list.
Their story is completely bogus!
