No Joint Clinton-Palin Appearance at New York Rally
ABC News’ Imtiyaz Delawala and Teddy Davis Report: In the case of the 2008 presidential election, life does not always imitate the art of well-received Saturday Night Live skit, especially where a joint appearance of Sen. Hillary Clinton and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin are concerned.
Clinton backed out of a protest scheduled for Monday in New York against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s attendance at the opening of the UN General Assembly after learning that organizers also invited the Republican vice presidential nominee without informing her.
Organized by American Jewish groups, the "Rally to Stop Iran Now" sent out a media advisory billing the joint appearance in their headline: "SEN. HILLARY CLINTON AND GOV. SARAH PALIN AT “RALLY TO STOP IRAN NOW,” AT UNITED NATIONS, MONDAY, SEPT. 22nd, 11:45 A.M."
The rally will feature Palin as well as Speaker of Israel’s Knesset Dalia Itzik and Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel.
Clinton aides were described as "furious" after learning from reporters — not rally organizers — of the plan to have Clinton and Palin appear together.
"Her attendance was news to us, and this was never billed to us as a partisan political event," said Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines in a statement to reporters. "Senator Clinton will therefore not be attending."
Palin spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt released a statement on Clinton’s canceled appearance saying, "Governor Palin believes that the danger of a nuclear Iran is greater than party or politics. She hopes that all parties can rally together in opposition to this grave threat."
Clinton’s spokesman had no direct response to the argument made by Schmitt.

Despite the fact Palin has only anatomy in common with Clinton voters, she wants them to vote for McPain. Now she takes a shot at the woman whose voters she wants to win over. Not seeing the strategy here.

I agree with the Statement from Palin they are correct, this is not a campaign event this is an American issue. I Love Hillary Clinton, but she needs not to sacrifice herself for Obama, there is no problem with both of them being their, this should be a bi-partisan effort. I am a bit disappointed.

Actually, this is very simple and Clinton is right—the organizers are shamelessly seeking media attention to their cause by blatantly using two prominent media attractions. That makes the event nothing other than a cheap media ploy, regardless of how it originally started out.
The organizers deserve the egg on their face. One should NEVER lie to or mislead your invited speakers.

Obama states that the American people are basically decent, just confused by listening to the ‘wrong’ radio stations and watching the ‘wrong’ television channels. And he will change all that for us, because only he can end our confusion.
I, for one, do not need or want someone else deciding which radio station to listen to and which television channel to watch.
And the fact that he refers to the American people as ‘THEY’ should make anyone wonder, who is HE?

Kudos to Hillary for not inflating this woman’s ego which is inflated to astounding proportions by these damn Republicans. This woman now thinks she will win the Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize, and any other achievement award for giving us the honor and pleasure of seeing and hearing her voice. Standing against Ahmadinejad IS standing up for freedom! Not giving him a hero’s welcome at Columbia like the American Left did last year. Liberals eagerly ignore Ahmadinejad’s record of publicly executing homosexuals and religious minorities, funding/arming terrorists, building nukes, and killing US soldiers in Iraq–just to show their hostility to Bush and America. Hypocrits.

Palin is right, this should not be a political stage. It should be a stage to show that both sides can come together to fight a cause. I feel bad Mrs. Clinton has to throw a hissy fit and say no. It shows the American people that she truly has no intentions on working with the “other” side.

The Democratic Party is UNFIT even to be majority in Congress. Fact of the matter is, the mind boggling collapse of Wallstreet has MORE to do with Democratic lead Congress than Bush itself. McCain supported a proposal in 2005 to oversee Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac; what the democrats in the senate had done? KILLED IT!
And now the Democrats are busy LYING to the American “don’t blame us.” The crash of our housing has MORE to do with the Democratic Party than the GOP. We all have to face the truth instead of acting blind what the Democrats in Congress are doing. Being hoodwinked by party loyalty is not the way to live.

Seeking attention to an event is fine. But when it turns deceitful and tacky, no one should fault an invited speaker for refusing to be used. If Palin had any dignity or brains, she would get out, too. But she is very willing to be used, whereas Clinton recognized it today for the shabby media circus it has become.

If Hillary were not informed that Palin would also be attending, she’s right to back out. That is a lie of omission on the part of the organizers. This isn’t a schoolyard game, but that’s the way people seem to want it to be. Hillary could grind Sarah Palin up and make her into mooseburgers, but that’s not the point. She was invited as a speaker, and not as a debater. No attention should be paid to anyone who thinks it was wrong of her to cancel. The wrong was done by the people who tried to trick her.

Here’s a different tack. Why are they protesting Ahmadinejad’s attendance at the UN when they are worried about Iran developing nuclear weapons.
Are they afraid he’s going to find some plutonium in New York?
And as for Palin’s response, yes, a nuclear Iran should be beyond partisanship. Now please explain to me how exactly this demonstration is going to prevent Iran from building weapons?

Absolutely the correct decision by Hillary. At least she “has a pair” which is more than I can say for a lot of people. She is too smart, too experienced and too classy to be on the same continent let alone stage with Pain. Pain says this is not a political event? What a laugh. Either she is totally lacking in functioning brain matter or once again the lying is coming as easy to her as it does to McLame/Shrub, etc., etc. And those of you who believe her are equally as moronic. This was another attempted cheap trick by the repukelicans and the organizers to pander to the female voters. Well, as a “well over the age of 21″ caucasian female voter, I am not fooled nor am I amused. The McLame/Pain group needs to take their toys (and spawn) and go home. No one will miss them.

Well duh. This is election year, thus it will not look good if a member of one party is seen with a member of the other at some public rally. Furthermore, the organizers didn’t even inform Clinton that Palin was attending. They shouldn’t lie like that, given it just makes people feel like they’re cheap being use like this.
So I don’t blame Clinton for backing out given the organizers should know better to do this kind of stunt during an election year.

The purpose of this event is to shed light on an issue that impacts AMERICA — this isn’t about being Democrat or Republican. IMO she is ruining any chance of another run at the presidency. I will seriously have to think about ever giving her my vote again, and that makes me sad.

I think the obvious is fairly obvious here. By Bipartisan the assumption would be that their was full disclosure about the event. There was not. This was just a veiled attempt at stirring up feces. Its not like any Americans really support Iran. Of course the right wingers will spew any lie to bully others into walking lock step with them. Another point. Isn’t this woman (Palin) supposed to be running for the highest office in the land? One of the titles is commander in chief but there is a reason why our leaders do not wear a military uniform. This is because they are first a diplomat, not rouge general. I do not think Mrs. Palin is practicing diplomacy here, do you?

I think it was important for her to back out. They are trying to link the two as if they are on the same agenda to ppl that may be on the fence. That would have hurt Obama by showing the two in the same light on an issue. They would have then have put a spin on it and you would have saw a commercial as if they were on the same page.

Sarah Palin is the fear of every intelligent woman currently fighting to be taken seriously in business, politics, or education: The token female who brings a pleasant appearance but little else and is trotted out as a major step forward for women. When her lack of depth brings her to failure, men in charge will point and say “we gave yu a chance…..”
What an insult to the highly educated, issue-driven supporters of Senator Clinton. I know I am not the only woman who cringed when Gov Palin indicated her ability to work with Russia because you see it from some places in Alaska.
In other times Gov Palin would have been termed a “bimbo”. A clever woman, with little working knowledge or education who uses her looks and her wits to get ahead.
Senator Clinton supporters have worked hard for the knowledge and experience needed to handle complex issues. To be ignored in favor of an empty hairdo is truly an insult. Women are not interchangeable. I do not blame Senator Clinton for not wishing to grant legitimacy to this charade.

Looks like Obama is done with according to the polls. the elderly adn white women will be the deciders of the election. McCain being 72 and Palin a white woman have locked down the two key voting groups. It will make great fodder for SNL for the next four years, I admit. I think people will also regret voting for McCain as they did with Bush, especially with the potential for McCain dying while in office. People may wake up one morning and find a Canadian accented President. It will make great comedy for the next 4 years. Obama supporters (I am one) just stop caring and it won’t hurt that bad. people deserve the President they vote for. I don’t feel sorry for anyone who voted for W. The republicans believe in culture war, we should give them one.

I’m curious….there are several posts that blame the Republican party for inviting Clinton and Palin…..do any of you have proof that the Republican’s planned this rally? Wasn’t is American Jewish groups that put this together? Classic American behavior — find someone to blame. Hillary and Sarah appearing at the same rally doesn’t mean that Hillary and Sarh agree on anything but the topic of this rally.

She obviously doesn’t want to be connected with this woman.

SteveI – truth be told, we all know this is nothing more than an attempt to change the conversation away from McCain’s self-professed ignorance of economic issues.
Face it. Clinton and Palin appearing together at an anti-Iran rally would be all the pundits talked about for days, if not longer.
The Republicans are desperately hoping independents don’t start taking a close look at McCain’s statements in general, and that the base doesn’t look too closely at McCain’s latest flip-flop on deregulation… not to mention some truly bizarre statements about ending golden parachutes, etc.

If Obama and McCain could appear together for 911 (of course Michelle didn’t show up) — why can’t Hillary show some class and show up to support the Jewish community? Especially since they helped her win her Senate seat.

Neither the GOP nor Palin is organizing this protest.
Obama and McCain joined for a brief moment of bipartisanship at the WTC site on 9/11.
Why can’t Hillary do the same?
????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Maybe because Obama and Mccain are running for president. So it would figure it would have to be Palin and Biden, the VP representatives. Hilary is not a participant or a coequal. Each parties convention has settled this. OK?????

This is still a free country. If Hillary Clinton does not want to be seen as sharing the same views as Palin, it is her choice not to do so. I wouldn’t do it either. Reaching across the aisle and sharing the spotlight with someone who has entirely different ideas on what the world needs, are two different issues. Palin is another stubborn, shoot first and ask questions later showff, cocky cowboy/girl.
Posted by: Ron | September 17, 2008, 12:48 pm 12:48 pm
Hillary did the right thing by canceling her appearance. The organizers of the event tried using her by stating she’d appear with Palin to whip up controversy that could make it seem like Hillary was in the tank for Palin and that they shared common ground. Don’t be naive and believe that the republican party would not have billed it that way to try and sell the idea to women that Clinton is really not that far removed from Sarah Palin in order to win votes. Of course, Hillary doesn’t want Iran to have nukes but there was a more underlying reason the organizers wanted them together and lets be frank…the future of our country is at stake. Let there be no confusion…Hillary is her own woman and knows how far the republicans are willing to go to win this election.
Posted by: Lester | September 17, 2008, 12:48 pm 12:48 pm
This is becoming comical. First Oprah won’t have Sarah on her show and now Hilary won’t appear with her at a rally to halt Iranian aggression. I guess Hilary and Oprah can’t tolerate being upstaged by the better woman.

There are doing things right and doing things wrong. When there are terrorist states out there that are hoping to get our country down to its knees, we must acknowledge it and defend outselves to the utmost. For Iran’s President to come to the UN takes utmost cahones for him to visit a country that he reviles. I feel that Senator Clinton should be rebuked on this one.

Why can’t the Jewish community support Hillary by informing her that she was a headliner along with Palin. This was an event that would have been tossed around in the news for weeks. Pictures of them standing near each other would energize the female base for the Republican party. Did they not invite McCain or Obama?

Don’t know what effect Hillary’s decision here might have on that one, particularly in her own state of New York, with its heavy Jewish-American population.
Several Jewish-American groups were organizing this event, not the Republicans.

Who are the organizers of the protest? Of course protecting the US and the world from a possible nuclear Iran is important and something both Republicans and Democrats are for, but the story does not explain who the organizers are. I’m pretty sure that having Palin and Clinton at this event is an attempt to help sway Hillary supporters to the McCain/Palin ticket. This is why Hillary backed out, I’m sure she knew that some people would try to paint her as being petty or partisan, but she knew that backing out was still the better choice to avoid giving Palin more supporters from her base. Anyone who does not realize this is the same type of moron who will buy a house they can’t afford and expect the government to bail them out.
Posted by: Sam | September 17, 2008, 12:52 pm 12:52 pm
So much for bipartisanship indeed. Did Clinton really think that only Democrats would be there to protest against Iran? That concern about nuclear proliferation is the sole province of any single political party? Once again the self-serving mistress of darkness shows how she is biding her time and continuing to lay the groundwork to finagle the 2012 Democratic nomination. Unfortunately, her actions have now broadcast that this rally is a GOP program and that will NOT please the Democratic powers that be. It will come back to bite her.

Sorry, Kim, but that’s not a convincing argument. If you can’t differentiate between actions that might actually provide some benefits and those that can’t, well, you might end up invading Iraq or something.
Cost-benefit analysis. It works.

Obviously we don’t know if that’s true, but that’s what they are saying – or, at least they are saying they can’t find evidence of it continuing.
Yet, we all assume they are trying to build nuclear weapons. Why? Because they’re all evil? Just wondering.

Obama brought up the Savings and Loan scandal in the late 80′s in his speech on the economy yesterday. And he came real close, but didn’t mention something – so I will!!
McCain was one of the dirtiest Senators involved in the S & L corruption scandal in 1989!!! He and 4 other “Dirty corrupt” Senators were named the “KEATING 5.”
Don’t believe me, just use “the Google” My Friends and google Keating Five. That is if you can run that new fanged computer thing or the Blackberry that McCain invented!!!
Out of the five he was the only one to take money and bribes to try and STOP and cover-up the investigation of the Savings and Loans!!!
Sound familiar??? As we see now McCain has his henchmen up in Alaska right now trying to “COVER-UP” Palin’s TROOPERGATE SCANDAL right now!!!
And McCain says he and Palin are the ones to clean up corruption in Wahington??

Let’s face it, Hillary was probably on heavy doses of Prozac already after losing the Democratic nomination to Obama. She’s probably doubled her dosage since Palin was nominated on the Republican ticket, so is probably in no mood, or shape, to appear at an event with Palin. She managed to compose herself at the Democratic Convention in wishing Obama congratulations, but I think she would potentially lose her composure in a public discussion with Palin.

“It isn’t the economy stupid – its defense. If our country falls, the ecomony won’t mean a thing.”
Well, I think the country is more likely to fall because of economic collapse than because of anything that might be decided in Tehran, or some cave in Pakistan.
That said, you do realize McCain indirectly said he would slash defense spending, right? And I mean slash it… something like 70 percent of it.
He promised to balance the budget in four years, and the only accounts in our discretionary spending that can make a dent in the $460 billion deficit are defense.
Of course, that assumes you can believe anything McCain says. Even his Republican colleagues in the Senate were scoffing at that claim he could balance the budget in four years.

Why do you people think Hillary is so great. Everything she has ever done was because her husband was President. Do you honestly believe she would have been elected to the senate w/out Bill? I don’t dislike her, but I don’t see what it so special about her either. Palin got to where she is on her own. Her husband didn’t get her there. That just throws out the theory of feminists. I guess a feminist has to be first and foremost a liberal.

“Sad that people are attacking Palin for doing her part. I can understand if Hillary doesn’t want to be involved. But what has Palin done in this matter to upset you so much? Most of you don’t even know her, but hated her the minute she was announced as the running mate. How can hate someone so much that you don’t even know. Some of you are really sad and angry people.”
They hate what they fear. The Republicans are supposed to be the party of intolerance, yet they put a woman on their ticket. Meanwhile the liberal left labeled Hillary a monster and disparage Palin every chance they get.

Yeah, forget the above post. We can’t believe anything McCain says.
In 2002 he wrote: “I didn’t decide to run for president to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to be president…In truth, I’d had the ambition for a long time.”
Now he runs under a slogan “Country First,” and y’all repeat it like its true or something. Its absolutely amazing to watch this guy play you Republicans for suckers.

McCAIN IS CORRUPT AND DIRTY!!!
Don’t believe me, just use “the Google My Friends” and google the Keating Five. That is if you can run that new fangled computer thing or the Blackberry that McCain invented!!!
Out of the five Senators he was the ONLY ONE to take money and bribes to try and STOP and cover-up the investigation of the corrupt Savings and Loans!!!
Sound familiar??? As we see now McCain has his henchmen up in Alaska right now trying to “COVER-UP” Palin’s TROOPERGATE SCANDAL!!! WHAT HAS SHE GOT TO HIDE, WHY DO THEY WANT TO STOP THE INVESTIGATION???
And McCain says he and Palin are the ones to clean up corruption in Washington??

Paul: Interesting responses; however on the topic of the article, it should be bi-partisan, like you stated. However, you stated, it’s not going to have any effect on potential weapons from Iran. Disagree with you significantly here, if no one took the time to protest and make an issue of events taking place then no one else would stand up and care either. True? I will put it in simple terms for you. The Jerry Lewis telethon each Labor Day weekend, would you know as much or possibly donate to the cause if someone had not organized the event many years ago? The upcoming rally may be otherwise small, but with help/support from Ms. Palin more people will take notice. The snowball will get bigger with support, the organizers just needed to form the snowball.
It’s to bad Clinton backed out.

Hillary would get accused of wanting Obama to lose if she appeared with Palin. . . .
Bill and Hillary Clinton know that Obama will lose because he is too liberal. They want to fully support the DNC ticket, even though they know this flaming radical will lose. In a perfect world, Hillary would enjoy an appearance with Palin and probably wrap her up in her words and make her look stupid. No matter what anyone says, Billary Clinton isn’t intimidated by this right winger. (you democrats, obama fanatics specifically, have forgot that the Clinton machine is the only ones amoung you who knows how to take the whitehouse)

The Republicans are soo sleezy. They are using anything and everything to try to get those Clinton votes. And the fact of the matter is that…”IT WON’T WORK”…For one, they’re not giving the Clinton supporters any respect. Informed Clinton supporters are aware that Palin and Clinton are political polar opposites. They have only their female anatomy in common. And when did Republicans become sympathic to women??!!…They scream “bloody murder” if anyone attempts to questions Palins political background or her personal views. This is a gimmick. Palin gaining foreign policy experience by shaking hands with world leaders at the UN and demonstrating with Hillary? Give me a break! It is another equivalence of having such an experience by seeing Russia from her porch in Alaska. There is a more troubling issue. I have a greater concern about Palin-McCain attitude towards the law, and feel that PALIN and her handlers HAVE DECLARED WAR AGAINST THE RULE OF LAW. In my view, this is a very important issue for anyone aspiring to be our leader, and we should all be concerned! This is the first impression we are developing about Palin since her emergence on the national stage. What are we to make of the fact that she is encouraging disregard for the law in Alaska! By refusing to testify before a duly constituted legislative investigative panel, and her Attorney General refusing that state employees should answer to subpoenas served on them, Palin is showing contempt for the law that one sees in the Bush approach to governing. McCain and Co., by reasons of convenience, might shout to us about a “witch hunt” against Palin. By comparison, Republicans expected Democrats to comply with Subpoenas from Kenneth Starr in his investigation of the Clintons and associates which many saw as simply over-reaching and biased. The Clintons complied! Palin would not. From this single act of disobedience, how can the nation expect that Palin, McCain and Co. will uphold the laws of the land should they ever get to the White House? Yet, this is among the most sacred obligation of high state officials–to uphold the law of the United States! What is left for us to teach our children about the rule of law if those in high office would not respect it?

So let’s focus on the kneejerk emotionalism of the boring Republican who is at least on top of their ticket.
By the way, anyone wanna guess what Georgians think of McCain and perhaps all Americans now? All that bluster about how we are they… and now no one talks about them anymore, while Russian armor still is sitting in the breakaway portions of that country. I’m guessing they’re feeling a little used, and they have a right to.
But much of that is McCain’s fault, with his emotional statements of the moment. Its mind-boggling the Republicans have found a candidate who can make Bush look measured.

What amazes me w.r.t. the Hilary supporters and Obama supporters I talk to is that they can’t list a single tangible thing that either one has done. Not one piece of substantive legislation that either has authored and helped to push through. Nobody questioning what Obama has done as senator from Illinois to help address the rampant state government corruption, neptotism, gang violence (which in Chicago, alone, claimed more American lives betwee Memorial Day and Labor Day (125 killed) than were lost in Iraq during the same period), medical crisis where doctors are fleeing the state due to the high cost of malpractice insurance, etc. Heck, Illinois is trying to get a referndum to impeach our Governor, while Palin has a 64% approval rating in the state she governs. What real experience do either Hilary or Obama have over Palin? Sure Hilary has been around a lot longer, but what has she really done? Obama certainly has no experience to point to… nothing compared to Palin when it comes to governing/executive experience, so get off that ludicrous soap box.

I really doubt that – sounds like a talking point line from Hannity. In terms of legislation, in just a few years Obama has actually been pretty active, and most notably with his ethics reform bill.
Now in 26 years, what has McCain done? Primarily known for campaign finance reform, which most Republicans think was a failure.

As for the low-blow ads Obama is running about McCain not using email – an article that ran many years ago vividly details the problems with MCCain’s fingers, that were shattered during his years of torture as a POW. In those ads, Obama is making fun of MCCain’s handicap, and that you think that’s OK says quite a bit about you. And McCain never said he invented the Blackberry, he served on the committee that cleared the way for wireless communications to boom in this country.

I have a lot of respect for Hillary Clinton, and I voted for her in the primary. In fact, she is the first presidential candidate I ever donated money to, and I still believe the DNC has really screwed up by forcing Obama upwards. With all that being said, I am disappointed in what she’s done with this. This should be a nonpartisan event, and this is a perfect time for the members of both parties to put differences behind them and appear together. Sarah Palin handled this with grace; unfortunately, Hillary Clinton did not. I believe (hope) Sen. Clinton is probably bowing to pressure from the Obama campaign, but I do think it is telling which side of the aisle is willing to extend their hand first. Another strike against Obama.

Clinton, a New York senator and former Democratic presidential candidate, has generally been supported by American Jews. But Micah Halperin, a Middle East expert and syndicated columnist, said it is “problematic” that she decided to back out.
Halperin, who is Jewish and called Clinton “a far better candidate” for Democrats than Obama, suggested that her actions could backfire on the Democratic ticket.
“Jews traditionally vote Democratic, and if a major Democratic leader does not join in the fight against Iran, where are those voters going to go?” he asked. “It’s problematic from the very point of view that says you have a national political leader who fundamentally is choosing not to stand up against Ahmadinejad.
“It changes my view of [Clinton's] wisdom, of her ability to take a situation, analyze it and come out on the right side, and that is deeply troubling to almost every voter in America, not just Jewish voters,” Halperin said, adding that Clinton’s move “is the kind of thing” that could tip voters toward McCain.

And that’s what McCain himself said, about his decision to go negative.

Davis: Any governor from any state is going to have “disgruntled” employees and detractors…it’s inevitable. To label this “troopergate” based on one-sided, unsubstantiated allegations is premature and sensationalized, to say the least. Little is said about the fact that Palin has a 64% approval rating in her state: double that of the current administration and triple that of the Democratic-led Congress. But this is to be expected by the left-leaning “mainstream” media who have glossed over the skeletons in Obama’s closet (Rev. Wright, Rev. Flagger, Tony Resco) and refused to ask any challenging questions regarding Obama’s accomplishments and/or experience, but have instead chosen to make federal cases out of the fact that Palin purchased a tanning bed and McCain doesn’t use email (not mentioning that it is because he is unable to type due to his war injuries).

Okay, Just Following Orders – but how many McCain supporters, off the top of their heads, could name one of those bills that McCain sponsored, other than the campaign finance reform.
That was the point. Someone said Obama supporters can’t name a single… blah, blah, blah. So the issue is, as presented by a McCain supporter, what the supporters know about the candidate.

All receiving money to fight a cause outside the US. In time it could happen for weapons too, (could, being the strong word) become something like the other cuases that raise funds. I don’t get why so many people still like Hillary Clinton. It seemed to me it was always about THEM! You have to admit! At least with Palin, however new an inexperienced to the American political scene, she sounds like she’s her own woman who makes tough decisions based on convictions instead of the prevailing political winds. The Clintons totally operated based on the latest polls, and political expediency. I’m certain I’m not the only one who saw this in them. How soon we forget.

Sandy: “Legal analysts were reporting last night on having reviewed the Palin emails, and found nothing incriminating…”
Which legal analysts? Lol.
I’d guess if there was nothing to hide, Palin Place would cooperate with the subpoenas because they’d want this investigation wrapped up before the election (as originally projected).
The fact that they seem to want to drag this out past the election makes it seem like there isn’t something to hide.
Maybe there isn’t, but sure seems like there must be. Or else why keep the story going like this?
But in effect they have killed the story, because make Palin look like just another corrupt, investigation ducking Republican, and suddenly she drops into the “who cares” category.

Sad! You would think an event to object to Iran having nuclear weapons would be bi-partisan. And it would have been if the Dems hadn’t turned it into a partisan brouhaha because they are having brain cramps about Gov. Palin. Apparently the Dems are also trying to throw Jewish voters under the bus the way they did to Catholics with Gov. Casey Sr. a few years ago-since the groups who organized the event are apparently all Jewish.
No surprise, I suppose, now that the Dem Party leader is Barack Hussein Obama.

Sarah Palin has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But still…I do not want this person to be my VP:
“The pastor whose prayer Sarah Palin says helped her to become governor of Alaska founded his ministry with a witchhunt against a Kenyan woman who he accused of causing car accidents through demonic spells.
Muthee_400156gAt a speech at the Wasilla Assembly of God on June 8 this year, Mrs Palin described how Thomas Muthee had laid his hands on her when he visited the church as a guest preacher in late 2005, prior to her successful gubernatorial bid.
In video footage of the speech, she is seen saying: “As I was mayor and Pastor Muthee was here and he was praying over me, and you know how he speaks and he’s so bold. And he was praying “Lord make a way, Lord make a way.”
“And I’m thinking, this guy’s really bold, he doesn’t even know what I’m going to do, he doesn’t know what my plans are. And he’s praying not “oh Lord if it be your will may she become governor,” no, he just prayed for it. He said “Lord make a way and let her do this next step. And that’s exactly what happened.”
She then adds: “So, again, very very powerful, coming from this church,” before the presiding pastor comments on the “prophetic power” of the event.
An African evangelist, Pastor Muthee has given guest sermons at the Wasilla Assembly of God on at least 10 occasions in his role as the founder of the Word of Faith Church, also known as the Prayer Cave.
Pastor Muthee founded the Prayer Cave in 1989 in Kiambu, Kenya after “God spoke” to him and his late wife Margaret and called him to the country, according to the church’s website.”

And then there is this new accusation:
“Your the type of person who would drive pass someone in need of help on the side of the road.”

It is very hard for me to understand how the media and many Americans, including Senator Clinton…can ignore Obama’s association for a long time with people like Ayers, Rezko, Wright and other questionable people. Also I feel the Democratic party has also cheated in the primary election by not counting the Votes in FL and Michigan, total corruption.

I may not have McCain’s list of accomplishments memorized, but I do know he has worked so often with democrats on various bills that John Kerry wanted him as a running mate several years ago. He’s worked with many big-name democrats – Kennedy, Feinstein and others …. that’s the kind of reaching across the aisles cooperation that brings true reform, and regrettably, I haven’t seen any bi-partisan cooperation from Obama.

Didn’t used to be that way.
And McCain is like the cheerleader of the kneejerk, emotional wing of the party.
“We are Georgians!”
“FU Strom Thurmond, and I don’t care if you are 95 years old, let’s throw down right now!”
I mean this guy is a trainwreck. He actually did try to fight Thurmond in the Capitol a few years back, and had to be restrained. Imagine if others hadn’t pulled McCain away?
He might well still be in Club Fed for involuntary manslaughter. I mean, how many slams against a wall can a 95-year-old take?

Smart move by Clinton.
First the organizers should have known this would be an issue and cleared it with women before making a news release.
Second, even though the event is non-partisan, we all know that McCain-Palin campaign will not spin in like that AFTER the event. Within 24 hours of the event, there would have been a Republican ad spinning as if the two women have teamed up. The only reason Palin was selected was to go after those supporters who feel disenfranchised by the Democratic party. You can bet the republicans would have spun reality to gather more Clinton supporters. More effort to throw up smoke screens to keep democrats scrambling and eyes & attention off of Palin.

Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.
If your name is Barack you’re a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you’re a maverick.
Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you’re well grounded.
If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 2 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran’s Affairs committees, you don’t have any real leadership experience.
If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you’re qualified to become the country’s second highest ranking executive.
If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you’re not a real Christian.
If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you’re a Christian.
If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.
If , while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state’s school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant , you’re very responsible.
If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family’s values don’t represent America’s.
If you’re husband is nicknamed ‘First Dude’, with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn’t register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family
is extremely admirable.

Poor Hillary. People might think she supports Palin. Boo hoo. The organizers are not just republicans. Jewish people are split down the middle about who to vote for just as much as the rest of the country. I doubt they were trying to tie the two together. That is a lame excuse. She should have been there. She is not about the country. She only cares about 2012 now.

Doug: “What’s wrong with a politician getting angry when it comes to doing the right thing.”
Slamming a 95-year-old against a wall is the right thing?
Making statements about the likelihood of U.S. military action in defense of Georgia that go far beyond the policies of our current administration is the right thing?
Going on David Letterman in October 2001 and accusing the Iraqis of being behind the anthrax attacks, and thus now being a target of U.S. invasion was the right thing?
Sorry, I’m not with you there.

The Republicans are just miffed because Hillary would have given the impression that she supported Palin. They could care less about Jewish affairs. Hillary is in a much higher class than that phoney- Palin. To those Jewish Americans who say they will vote for McCain…go ahead…then let the GOP make fun of you and “that liberal city- New York”. Really smart thinking there!

You know, you can vascillate (look it up) all day about “oh, it wasn’t fair that they didn’t check with Hillary”. What Hillary should have done was to ensure that they were not placed anywhere near each other if there was a head table, and that they did not speak anywhere near each other on the program.
By taking a ridiculous knee-jerk reaction to this and cancelling, she has handed Obama’s Jewish vote to McCain.
But maybe that was the plan all along….

As I read these posts, I’m becoming more and more concerned about the future of our great nation. People are ignoring all of the lies and filth being spewed by the McCain/Palin campaign, and are deciding to vote for them, even though they flip-flop on the issues regularly.
WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE???
They’re going to elect McCain/Palin, and we’ll end up stretching ourselves thin in more wars, while our economy continues to diminish, with the rich getting richer, and the middle class evaporating.
WAKE UP AMERICA!
Let go of emotions and look at the issues. Forget stupid partisan politics and look at who they really are! Thanks to the actions of this republican administration, we’ve become a laughing stock! We’ve lost our credibility with nations who were our staunch allies.
I DON’T WANT MORE OF THE SAME!
If you can look at either of these candidates and believe that they are going to do things differently, then vote for them, but please don’t elect another warmongering, military-first president!
If we’re going to fight a war, let’s fight against poor education, homelessness, failing Social Security,a nd lack of health care right here on American soil.
DON’T LET THESE SLEAZY POLITICIANS THINK FOR YOU!
MAKE AN EDUCATED DECISION
oh and ps. this h illary crap is poppycock. They tried to sucker her into appearing with Palin, and this would’ve been a political move. It would’ve given credence to the McCain camp’s appeals to Hillary supporters. ENOUGH WITH THE POLITICS! LET’S SAVE AMERICA!

I think a lot of you “repubs” think think we who don’t support Palin must hate her. I don’t hate her, she’s probably a neat person to know. The problem is that she’s not remotely qualified to run this country. She has no “world view”. She has sequestered herself in this little area of the country her entire life. My grandmother is one of the toughest, strong willed people you could ever meet. She has a firm opinion on EVERYTHING! I love her, but she has no business trying to lead this country. There is nothing in Palins political history that says “qualified” or “bi-partisan”. She bulls her way through everything.

Hillary showing up at this event would not have implied her support for Palin. This event is not a campaign event, a joint appearance or anything else for the 2008 campaign.
It is a rally organized by American Jewish groups – “Rally to Stop Iran Now”
Wake up – it’s not all about Barack or Hillary or Johnny or Sarah for that matter. The organizers merely wanted to get the most attention for their cause – that’s THEIR JOB.
They were not some Republican hit squad that set up this event JUST to TRAP Senator Clinton.
Although they may very well be voting for McCain after this. But Hill is smart. Noone will remember this in 2012, and it will help get McCain/Palin elected. She’s crazy like a fox and the Clintons will go down in history as two of the most savvy politicians ever – with good reason.

I want to know if they have dirt int heir past. I want to know what their religious beliefs are. I want to know about their moral fiber.
I don’t know much about Palin. I do know that based on the Gibson interview, she’s not very knowledgeable or equipped to keep us out of unnecessary wars. And her campaigns attempts to cover up the things that are going on in Alaska concern me. They make me think that she’s hiding something.
I pray that the debates change the tone of this election and that the focus returns to the issues.

“Hillary showing up at this event would not have implied her support for Palin. This event is not a campaign event, a joint appearance or anything else for the 2008 campaign.”
everything that Palin does from now until election day is PURELY POLITICAL. If you don’t believe that, then you haven’t been monitoring American politics for the past 30 years or so.
The McCain camp is aggressively going after Hillary Clinton’s supporters, so any appearance with Palin and Clinton will be spun to show unity between the two candidates…oh wait, Hillary isn’t a candidate…why wasn’t Joe Biden selected to speak…I WONDER…

I wish Hillary would have gone. Her support for Israel is well known and well documented. She was made fun of by some for saying she would obliterate Iran if they bombed Israel. She shouldn’t let the fact that Palin is going to be at that rally keep her from going. It just doesn’t look right and may raise doubts to some iffy voters. The importance of the statement being made by this rally is far more important than party politics. Hillary is better than this.

She actually said that they were going off to fight a war against the people who planned the 9/11 attack….
ummm hello?
we know that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11
Think for yourselves people? While it’s true that you’re voting to elect McCain as president (as scary as that prospect is), he’s an old geezer who probably won’t make it through his first term.
That would leave you with Palin as president.
If you support her religious views, good for you. I agree with her religious views myself as a REAL CHRISTIAN, but that doesn’t mean I want to send more of my countrymen off to die to defend some other nation’s land.

Firing – Firing and government workers
If you are a public sector employee,

there are a number of civil service laws

First of all, you generally cannot be fired

Secondly, your freedom of speech is

Dear Barb Streisand &Steven Spielberg,
Last night, you had a big and lavish party for a wrong person and party, Obama/Hilliary and DNC. Whitch party and candidate stand with Jews in the world ??? Read the article “Jews traditionally vote Democratic, and if a major Democratic leader does not join in the fight against Iran, where are those voters going to go? he asked.
“It’s problematic from the very point…….”. Obama, Hilliary and some Democratic leader seem to stand with Jewish only with their mouth without any action. Why Joe Liberman support McCain/Palin? President Bush, McCain/Palin and Republic party, however, truly stand with Islael and Jewish. Bush has been fighting against extreamly Islamic terrorist even though his population plunged he knew. Sarah Palin mentioned Islael, our best friend. She won’t cancell to attend to protest the dictator Iranian president because John and she are ready to protect all American and Jeweish in the world from the evil. Obama who has 25% muslim gene from his father, Obama Hussein Barack who had same name with Obama was not deserving to grap all the money $9 Mil. Think about it.

People, IF the Republican VP is asked to attend, then the Democratic VP should be asked as well, NOT Hillary. That is why this was totally political and set up to make it look like they are on the same page when it comes to policies. How to deal with Iran will not be solved, and I am sure Sarah will say she can see Iran from her house in her opening comments. But, the only thing that would have been fair, but not as politically viable for the Republicans, is to have BIDEN AND PALIN not Hillary. Lehman Brothers collapse is traced back to Fannie Mae and
Freddie Mac, the two big mortgage banks that got a federal
bailout a few weeks ago.
Freddie and Fannie used huge lobbying budgets and political
contributions to keep regulators off their backs.
A group called the Center for Responsive Politics keeps
track of which politicians get Fannie and Freddie political
contributions. The top three U.S. senators getting big
Fannie and Freddie political bucks were Democrats and No. 2
is Sen. Barack Obama.
Now remember, he’s only been in the Senate four years,
but he still managed to grab the No. 2 spot ahead of John
Kerry — decades in the Senate — and Chris Dodd, who is
chairman of the Senate Banking Committee.
Fannie and Freddie have been creations of the congressional
Democrats and the Clinton White House, designed to make
mortgages available to more people and, as it turns out,
some people who couldn’t afford them.
Fannie and Freddie have also been places for big Washington
Democrats to go to work in the semi-private sector and
pocket millions. The Clinton administration’s White
House Budget Director Franklin Raines ran Fannie and
collected $50 million. Jamie Gorelick — Clinton Justice
Department official — worked for Fannie and took home $26
million. Big Democrat Jim Johnson, recently on Obama’s
VP search committee, has hauled in millions from his Fannie
Mae CEO job.
Now remember: Obama’s ads and stump speeches attack
McCain and Republican policies for the current financial
turmoil. It is demonstrably not Republican policy and worse,
it appears the man attacking McCain — Sen. Obama — was
at the head of the line when the piggies lined up at the
Fannie and Freddie trough for campaign bucks.
Sen. Barack Obama: No. 2 on the Fannie/Freddie list of
favored politicians after just four short years in the
Senate.
Next time you see that ad, you might notice he fails to
mention that part of the Fannie and Freddie problem.

“Her attendance was news to us, and this was never billed to us as a partisan political event,” said Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines in a statement to reporters. “Senator Clinton will therefore not be attending.”
So, Hillary won’t be attending, because it ‘was never billed…as a partisan political event’? They must be using one of those Clintonian definitions (like “is”), since by backing out as opposed to appearing with Palin at a non-partisan event, she is making a partisan political statement.

Palin had an 80% approval rating. So, out of 600,000 alaskans, 480,000 approved of her. Not bad, I guess. Hillary only had 18 million vote for her.

Sarah Palin is refusing to talk to the Troopergate investigators. Karl Rove is refusing to testify at Congress. Government employees in Alaska who are loyal to Palin are refusing to comply with subpoenas issued them. Harriet Miers refused to comply with subpoena issued her to testify before congress about the political firings by the Attorney General. Sarah Palin is just another Republican Mini-Bush.

McCain and Palins popularity has peaked and is now slipping. The initial excitement over Sarah is starting to fade. The more people get to know her and hear what she really thinks, the less they like her. She’s not really one of us, she’s just a rural hick who doesn’t really know anything about anything that goes on beyond her backyard. She had nothing but rehearsed answers for Charlie Gibson and is refusing any more interviews of substance. I can’t wait to see her in the debate.

Now thats someone that I want in office.

Michael, the McCain/Palin ticket has integrity??? So, according to your logic, it’s okay to cheat on your wife and leave her when she’s in the hospital as long as you don’t lie about it? Okay, you’re right. McCain has more integrity than Bill Clinton, but he doesn’t have more integrity than Barack Obama and Barack Obama is who he is running against. Obama has never cheated on his wife. McCain went negative long before Obama decided to hit back, and he does it reluctantly. If you’re voting based on integrity, Obama is your man.

Why is the media not calling Obama out about his role in the Fannie Freddie catastrophe? Obama is the number two recipient of campaign contributions from Fannie and Freddie. Obama has never introduced any legislation that would have regulated Fannie and Freddie’s loan practices of making loans to high risk borrowers. Yet Obama is saying now as President he will take the action necessary to regulated Fannie and Freddie. Problem is Obama is not credible on this issue or any other issue for that manner. Obama’s top two economic advisers are former Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac CEO’s who may have pulled strings to give Obama a “heads up”on the recent government bail-out plan. Washington Prowler has the story: Obama’s economic advisers from day one and who have raised him a ton of money: are Franklin Raines and Jim Johnson. Both of them are up to their eyeballs in the mortgage debacle. Both Raines and Johnson have served as CEO of Fannie Mae, with Raines taking over from Johnson. How Obama can say with a straight face that Republicans are responsible for the mess, when it is his key advisers who ran the agencies that that are the primary people behind the mess is beyond belief. The people who are responsible for what may well be the single largest government bailout in history are Obama‘s top economic advisors.. And every single one of them made millions off the collapse that are lining Obama’s campaign coffers. If McCain had Raines and Johnson as his campaign advisers you can bet the farm that the media would be all over it. Why the silence? Beware the Obama/Media complex.

With McCain/Palin’s history of twisting words, false accusations and exaggeration of facts (thanks, but no thanks, etc.) there is no way that Hillary can be seen with Palin. The campaign would use that footage in their next commercial with some ridiculous claim that Hillary supports the McCain/Palin ticket. It isn’t about bipartisanship – it’s about protecting your image and prevent it from being used and abused by unethical people to promote themselves.

DO NOT MISS THIS….!!!
CEO – Troopergte – Bristol – Levi!
Check this out, is she nuts or what!
All you Palin McCain supporters – you better read this. Seems Sarah had a little help in her run for governor of Alaska…Here is the link to the story and a bit of it..!
http://timesonline.typepad.com/uselections/2008/09/palin-linked-el.html
Palin linked electoral success to prayer of Kenyan witchhunter The pastor whose prayer Sarah Palin says helped her to become governor of Alaska founded his ministry with a witchhunt against a Kenyan woman who he accused of causing car accidents through demonic spells. At a speech at the Wasilla Assembly of God on June 8 this year, Mrs Palin described how Thomas Muthee had laid his hands on her when he visited the church as a guest preacher in late 2005, prior to her successful gubernatorial bid. In video footage of the speech, she is seen saying: I was mayor and Pastor Muthee was here and he was praying over me.

Bad move by Hillary. It makes her look weak and very bad for her relationship with the Jewish community who have always supported her. Sarah Palin wins this round. She outsmarted Hillary and looks good in the eyes of the Jewish Community. Hillary is the Senator from New York and this is a bad political move on her part and she may lose their vote when she runs for her Senate seat or possibly a Presidential run in 2012. Every action has a re-action and this one will haunt Hillary.
This will enhance Sarah Palin’s career in the eyes of the Jewish community.

Paul said: “Now please explain to me how exactly this demonstration is going to prevent Iran from building weapons?”
I agree – if I’m intent on building a nuke, a rally won’t actually enter my mind…
Personally, I don’t think our national leaders, which includes any member of congress or the presidential tickets, should engage in international relations by way of a street protest. We have state departments to communicate our govermental positions, and congress in theory should help shape those positions. Appearing as a featured speaker in this event just cheapens the influence of your official position in the government. Unless you are attending as a citizen in which case you should do so anonymously.
Second point – I have seen a couple comments here implying that less than 100% support of the Israeli government will cost the “Jewish vote.” I don’t believe that, but will the people making those comments please explain then how we can all vote in the next Israeli elections so we’re not beholden to a government where we are not represented?

Michael, the Clinton administration is responsible for the housing slump????? How did Clinton manage that, from 10 yrs. ago??? The truth is that the lending institutions got greedy and after the republican deregulated them, they gave loans to anyone who applied, regardless of whether they had good credit or not. And now, all those sub-prime loans are coming due and the people who bought homes they couldn’t afford had to foreclose. The first rule in banking is to don’t lend money to someone who can’t pay it back. Duh. Stop trying to pin this mess on Demcrats. It was a republican congress and a republican president who screwed this economy. If you want to vote Republican because you’re a Republican then go ahead, but don’t try to justify it by blaming Democrats for all of the Republicans failings. You’re going to lose.
Posted by: Dave | September 17, 2008, 4:29 pm 4:29 pm
In the debates, Hillary stated that we shouldn’t negotiate or acknowledge terrorist regimes. By holding a protest rally, you are acknowledging a terrorist regime and legitimizing it. Iran is a democracy. Ahmadinejad was elected in a fair election. He won by running on an anti-american platform. Anything we do against him just makes him more powerful to his people. If you want the Iranians to hate Ahmadinejad, we should embrace him and say how much we like him. Reverse psychology.

It is amusing reading all these “holier than thou” comments. I have 25 years behind me of counseling and when you get into a room, behind a closed door, and clients start talking — believe me — there is NO ONE “holier than thou”. Also, the Jewish Community is very diverse and not all go along with the more radical members. Hillary is right and Palin is being used and used by radicals of all sorts and will continue to be if she and McCain are elected. If McCain/Palin are elected, kiss what we love about this country good-bye as the “babies and guns” and “bomb, bomb, bomb” crowd will be in charge. America is so disrespected across the world right now and it will be completely ignored in the future.

MESSAGE TO ALL HILLARY SUPPORTERS: If you would even consider voting Republican after what this country has been through the last 8 years, you are NOT a Democrat, so please do us all a big favor and either get your head on straight or move on to some other party. If you want to see more Supreme Court justices like Roberts, Thomas and Alito, you are NOT a Democrat. If you want to give even more huge tax breaks to Big Oil and the rich, while ignoring the poor, Education, Science, and America’s crumbling infrastructure, you are NOT a Democrat. If you would take away a woman’s right to have control over her own reproductive system, you are NOT a Democrat. If you think personalities are more important than platforms, you are just not thinking correctly. If we are to get this country moving again in the right direction, it is imperative that we have a Democratic President and Congress. I was a Hillary supporter too and even donated to her campaign, but Hillary is not the candidate, Barack Obama is, and I’m supporting and donating to his campaign because he is a Democrat and proud of it, just as I am. I’m sure Hillary and Bill are disappointed, but they too realize the absolute importance of electing Democrats this November, and I’m very proud of them both for campaigning for Obama. By the way, I’ve done quite a lot of research on Obama since Hillary dropped out, and he is an extremely extraordinary American and worthy of our support. Read The Audacity of Hope and you’ll agree. Vote Democratic!

Lynn Forester (huge fundraiser for Hillary) came out today in support of McCain/Palin. She knows this candidate has the people’s interests and not just his own. She has said what we all know…McCain has bucked his own party, Bush, he works across the aisle more than any other Senator and has promised to appoint Republicans AND DEMOCRATS to his cabinet….best and brightest….no egos towards who gets credit. Paying the wealthiest only $1 a year…THIS IS THE PRESIDENT I WANT. No party bickering….just coming togehter as Americans to solve the problems that lie ahead. The scarey suit and his ego would be better served in the Hollywood circles where they can pat each other on the back and throw their millions around during troubling financial times.

Hillary Clinton was supposed to be the democratic nominee for president. We all know this fact. To their credit, the Jewish groups understood the fact and invited Hillary. It’s up to Hillary to accept or decline.
The point is, Hillary Clinton was the ideal candidate to defeat the republicans. This was not to be thanks to the democratic leadership who instead chose the weakest candidates of all, Barack Hussein Obama. I will be voting for the McCain/Palin ticket, making this a first for me to vote for a Republican.
Hoepfully, Hillary will run in 2012. I know for sure she will win the presidency if she runs.

Hey Momtryingtoraisecitizens:
You are the mental midget. You really think that lying Palin who has a druggie for a son who is being whisked away under the guise of heroism into the military, but was actually given a choice to either go to jail or the military is a an American role model? Lying Palin who has allowed her teen daughter to consume alcohol and drugs, who just happen to be pregnant. Is this the role model we want in the White House to represent mothers and our children? Lying Palin who practice cronyism and fires people who disagrees with her or wont carry out her dirty deeds and who refuses to clear her name in an investigation that says she ruined people’s lives and livelihood for her own selfish misuse of power. This is what you call the role model family for the American people, our children and the White House? Are you serious? If this is your idea of the ideal family for the White House, then I am to assume that you are probably misleading your children who you say you are raising to be citizens and probably teaching them to be what Sarah Palin is and that is a habitual serial liar. You will see.

Diana at 4:47…you can kiss your America good bye if Barack Hussein gets elected. A guy who hangs with terriorists, criminals and racists changes our standing in the world in ways I don’t want to see. Hamas endorses BO, Farrakhan, Ayers, Rezko….why our journalists turn the other way on all this guys character judgements is beyond DOUBLE STANDARD. If his skin were different, he would have withdrew last March…when it all started leaking out….and Hillary, the best Dem candidate would be running against McCain today. (she would have been forced to take Bozo as VP tho, and she would have)….I still could not have voted for her, as I can’t stand Obama as Prez.

she’s an experienced liar.
The small town of Wasilla

debt.
She’s a dime a dozen,

We may be missing the point here. It is very possible that Clinton is using this Palin thing for an excuse to stay away from protesting a possible future American alli if Barack gets elected. She may be forced to negotiate with this terrorist (Mahmoud Ahmadinejad) by the Obama administration. They have forced her into almost everything else. Talk about selling your soul.

All this sounds familiar. Where have I heard it? Oh, yeah, Iraq. I’m sure Iran is just as much a threat to us as Iraq was, so when do we invade? All those millions and millions of Iranians are all suicide bombers anyway, so I’m sure they would gladly sacrifice their whole country and all it’s people just to set off an A-bomb in New York. While we’re in the neighborhood, President Palin can have us go ahead and take Russia out too. The Russians don’t really have any nukes of their own, and we’ll be welcomed as Heroes. It’ll be a piece of cake!

It is sad to see that Hillary Clinton, supposedly a person who staunchly opposes terrorism has now shown her true colors. She has put Self Interest over Love of Country in the cancellation of her appearance supporting Israel and protesting the visit of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s attendance at the opening of the UN General Assembly. Ahmadinejad is a Monster who wants the complete destruction of Israel, has authorized the Iranian Terrorist QUD Forces (Barack Obama refused to vote in the affirmative that the QUD Forces of Iran, who have been responsible for many American soldier’s deaths as General Petraeus testified in congress, is a Terrorist Force) to arm and train their their fellow terrorists in Iraq, and wishes for a nuclear Iran for the destruction of Iran’s enemies (which includes the West and not only Israel). In my view Hillary Clinton should Never be elected President of the United States if she were to ever run again. Indeed, I have now lost all respect for the Senator from New York. I believe Governor Palin’s spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt said it best when she stated…”Governor Palin believes that the danger of a nuclear Iran is greater than party or politics. She hopes that all parties can rally together in opposition to this grave threat.” Hillary Clinton, a person who has refused to rise above party politics and self interest will never do this as we can now see. Kudos to Governor Palin-a True American!!

So many idiots here. You root for candidates and parties as if they were a sports team. “Go-Go, Rah-Rah!!!”
How about actually taking a look at the platform, issues, and what the candidates are actually saying, then make a choice. some of you were screaming “PALIN” and swinging your pom poms in the air before you knew anything about here.
This is turning into a popularity contest, and that’s a shame. You would rather have your party win at all costs no mater the detriment it may have on our country.

America needs a Washington OUTsider to get fresh perspective on world affairs. Thank God for Sarah Palin. Two trivia questions: 1) Which party spends more time blaming the other for legislation passed only after they themselves have rendered it wasteful and polluted with their own interest? 2) Which controlling party of congress has the lowest approval rating is US history? If I recall correctly the President does not legislate, doesn’t legislate the budget, or declare war. (A significant majority in congress can only do that.) We complain about the executive branch being out of touch but I don’t hear anyone making congress accountable. So if you must; go ahead and blame it on the one holding the pen that signs stupid porked up legislation into law.

Just Wondering:
I believe it motivated by something called education. While it is true that we all make typographical errors from time to time, it takes great effort to misspell the same word twice in a short post, especially since there is a built-in spell-check feature on these “Blogs” that actually works as the default, underlining misspelled words in red. It is also quite annoying, but that is another subject.
Those of us who have had to write paper after paper as we progressed through the public school system and college learned both to spell correctly and to proofread our work before submitting it. Those lessons were not lost on me, although they might have been lost on others.
By the way, you used two periods instead of the appropriate question marks, and you may have omitted an apostrophe, as ‘others’ in this case is a possessive, but I would have to look that one up in a grammar book. Of course you could always get around that by writing, “… to correct the spelling of others?”
Oh, this is so tedious … I’m glad I never became a teacher. I much prefer being a plain, old nitpicker.

Virtually from the moment John McCain selected her, Palin has been under assault. There has been legitimate criticism, of course. But there has also been a gusher of slander, much of it – like the slur that she isn’t the real mother of her infant son, Trig – despicable.
For someone who has been in the national spotlight for only three weeks, Palin has been the victim of an astonishing array of falsehoods. Voters have been told that she slashed funding in Alaska for special-needs children. That she tried to ban books from Wasilla’s public library. That she was a member of the secessionist Alaskan Independence Party. That she links Saddam Hussein to the attacks of 9/11. That she backed Pat Buchanan for president. That she doesn’t want students taught about contraception. That she called the war in Iraq “a task from God.” All untrue.
Hillary Clinton’s supporters complain that coverage of her campaign was tainted by sexism, such as the Washington Post story that focused on her cleavage, or Mike Barnicle’s description of her on MSNBC as “looking like everyone’s first wife standing outside a probate court.”
Obama too has suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous comment – the Fox News segment that captioned a picture of his wife “Obama’s Baby Mama,” for example, and the infamous New Yorker cover showing the Obamas as terrorists in the Oval Office.
But the left’s onslaught against Palin has been of a different order of magnitude.
“Ideologically, she is their hardcore pornographic centerfold spread,” columnist Cintra Wilson wrote in Salon. “She’s such a power-mad, backwater beauty-pageant casualty, it’s easy to write her off and make fun of her. But in reality I feel as horrified as a ghetto Jew watching the rise of National Socialism.”
On the website of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, commentator Heather Mallick was even cruder. Palin appeals to “the white trash vote” with her “toned-down version of the porn actress look,” she wrote. “Husband Todd looks like a roughneck. . . What normal father would want Levi ‘I’m a [bleeping] redneck’ Johnson prodding his daughter?”
From radio talk-show host Randi Rhodes came the smutty suggestion that the governor of Alaska has an unhealthy interest in teenage boys: “She’s friends with all the teenage boys,” Rhodes told her audience last week. “You have to say no when your kids say, ‘Can we sleep over at the Palins?’ No! NO!”
The smears and sneers have been without end. One liberal congressman likened Obama to Jesus – and Palin to Pontius Pilate. A Democratic state chairman declared scornfully that Palin’s “primary qualification seems to be that she hasn’t had an abortion.” A University of Chicago professor seethed: “Her greatest hypocrisy is in her pretense that she is a woman.”
The national media, meanwhile, have only further eroded what remained of their reputation for objectivity.
For months they refused to mention the infidelity of John Edwards, yet they leaped with relish onto Bristol Palin’s pregnancy . Ravenous for any negative morsel on the GOP running mate, they deployed legions of reporters to Alaska, who have produced such journalism as the 3,220-word exposé; in Sunday’s New York Times that upon winning office, Palin – gasp! – fired opponents and hired people she trusted.
Boston Globe
The liberal sexist media should stop all these women bashing.

Not that this has anything to do with the rally in question, but since this has turned into a “Palin” discussion:
As the electorate, we are expected to hold our officials accountable. I need some help in the accountability of “shake things up in Washington.”
1) What things will be “shaken up” and what will be left intact?
2) What will be the effect of such “shaking” and how will it benefit us? Who will be negatively impacted?
3) How will we know when it’s done and what will the country look like?
Having a slogan is fine, but it can’t be your whole platform.
Government isn’t as easy as the sloganeers want you to believe.
Imagine if before you had surgery, a new hospital administrator came in said she was there to “shake things up” in the OR. I think you’d want some details on that…

Ed, why would you run from Michelle Obama? you know what? Don’t answer that one.
With the level of blind fanaticism I’ mseeing, I’m wondering if Cafferty had it right when he posed the question about race being the elephant in the room that nobody is talking about.
As an independent, I’ve seen McCain flip flop and lie frequently over the past 2 weeks, so i no longer trust him. I thought he was a man of integrity, but instead of being honest, he’s lying in adds and in interviews. It’s as if he is adopting a “win-by-any-means-necessary” philosophy.
After Palin’s interview with Charlie Gibson, she can’t redeem herself in my eyes. Plus she’s not cooperating with a bipartisan investigation. That concerns me. I don’t want another politician who says that they’re going to hold the people in washington accountable, but won’t accept accountability for her own actions. She says she’s about one thing, but her actions prove otherwise. That really concerns me
I don’t know much at all about Joe Biden (today’s version of Biden) because he’s not getting any press.
Barack Obama seems ok, but I need to know more details about what he’s proposing. Details that he’s beginning to provide about his economic plan at least, but I need more.
So having said all of that, I read the comments of al of these people who are Palin supporters (not necessarily McCain/Palin supporters, which is really odd, considering McCain is actually running for PRESIDENT) and I’m wondering why in the world they would be such fanatical supporters of this ticket. I could see being grudging supporters of the ticket, saying that your special interest will be represented by them, but to be FANATICAL? To ignore the truths that have been revealed?
I just don’t understand it.
Let’s get back to the issues. I want to hear Barack Obama’s and John McCain’s strategies on extricating our troops from the war in Iraq. I want actual details, not rhetoric.
I want to hear from both of them about how they plan to heal our economy. What restrictions will they place on big businesses. Exactly how will they stimulate economic growth.
How are we going to improve our education system?
What are we going to do about energy? Why haven’t we been holding manufacturers to higher standards? Ford is selling a car overseas that gets 60 miles to the gallon, but they won’t sell it in the US b/c oil and the auto industry are in bed together.
HOW WILL THEY IMPROVE THE LIVES OF AVERAGE AMERICANS.
let’s get away from this petty crap and examine the empirical evidence. And if you don’t want to vote for Obama because he’s black, or if you do want to vote for Obama b/c he’s black, just say it and shut up. stop peddling chatter that’s diffusing the real issues!

Common people, if the people organizing this event would have been up front about what they were doing this would not be a story. But these people organize this event on deception. both parties learned from reporters — not rally organizers — of the plan to have Clinton and Palin appear together. This is an election year and would lead people to beleive that both ladies supported each other. Why not just bar Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for the USA?

Debra,
So then you must think you are a suitable choice for VP, as well? You correctly highlighted the problem with Palin. She is average in every respect, probably nice enough, but NOT qualified to lead this country. Please, please, please think about what you are doing here and read the news–check out the economic disaster that is right around the corner and remember it came to us courtesy of the Republican policies. This is exactly parallel to what happened before the Great Depression. Decades of deregulation and corruption (the Gilded Age) favoring the rich and sponsored by Republicans. They crashed the economy once before and they will do it again. This is not about your family and how much you “like” her. This is not a popularity contest. This is about adult citizens of this country taking responsibility for it for a change and not simply electing the person “you’d like to have a beer with.” It is really time to grow up. If you can’t get past your blatantly ridiculously childish rationale for casting a vote, then please refrain from voting.

Why doesn’t everyone here who thinks Gov. Palin isn’t VP material compare her Executive experience to Obama’s 143 days in the Senate. Really. Look at this as a job applicant and see who really has worked with staff/budget/troops/signed checks/given $1,200 rebates to Alaska residents…look at her Governing resume. And don’t forget SHE IS RUNNING FOR VP, not top of the ticket, like the empty suit! Biden even likes John more as he always refers to McCain as John and their friendship goes back 33 years….he once said HE’D BE PROUD TO RUN with John McCain.
With the financial crisis and the recent terriorist attack in Yemon at American Embassy….WE NEED JOHN SYDNEY McCAIN. Voters vote TOP OF THE TICKET EVERY TIME. Palin just makes it better for me. If Mrs.Clinton declines to be exploited and used, it’s her right, just as it’s Palin’s right to attend. Hillary was not told that Palin was going to be there. It was an attempt to make ex Hillary supporters believe that Hillary backed Palin. Hillary did not want to appear to be pro Palin.
But if Hillary were told up front about Palin, and she and Palin made it known that for that gathering there would be no BIAS of either political campaign, then maybe Hillary would have showed up.
Palin supporters, stop trying to get my vote. You just don’t get it.

When the Alaska Legislature’s Legislative Council, a Republican-dominated panel of 14 legislators which conducts business when the Legislature is out session, voted to investigate the firing of former Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan in July, Palin pledged her full support.
But almost immediately after joining the GOP ticket, Palin’s Troopergate strategy veered sharply. Despite her earlier vows of full cooperation with the probe, she declared it unlawful. The legislature lacked the authority to investigate the matter, she said. Instead, it should be handled by the state personnel board, Palin asserted — a panel which is under her authority.

Oh diana…do shed some light…because I supported Hillary and am now for McCain/Palin? Sorry you have a problem with that…check out the headlines. Lynn Forester Rothschild, huge Dem supporter/fundraiser for Hill, announced today her support for John McCain. They are going to start defecting, if not publicly, a quiet riot in the voting booth. Even Hill and Bill.
I agree with poster above about the town halls (McCain and Palin are doing one now)…too bad Obama has no confidence in this area. He always declines, like he declined extra debates with Hillary. We all know he needs a script and a prompter!

It is astounding to me that women who supported Hilary Clinton could even phathom voting for John McCain. Never mind he made an impulsive move asking an ill-equipped person to be his running mate, never mind he is a war monger who talks about his military service yet votes against veteran’s benefits, never mind he has been desperately lying throughout this entire campaign … but what astounds me the most is his disloyalty to his own party. Now having a picture standing next to the person the party nominated, stood behind, and supported is suddenly the last person they see as an asset to their cause. Instead of saying that mistakes have been made by our party and now is the time to redirect our efforts, the McCain campaign is pretending they are not them. It reminds me when my kids were little and they would “hide” in the middle of the room saying ‘you can’t see me’ and we would all pretend we couldn’t find them… Playing pretend is very different then trying to deceive the American people with smoke and mirrors. The country is not as naive as it was eight years ago. If you supported Hilary, then you are smart enough to see all this yourself.

Lynn Forester de Rothchild married Sir Evelyn de Rothchild 8 years ago. She says in her British Vogue (July 08) interview “ I came from a very claustrophobic, typical suburban American town and I just couldn’t wait to get out of there”. Obama is the elitist? “She (Lynn) was adamant that her hairdresser Vincent Roppatte be flown in from New York for this Vogue shoot. And, indeed, the date of the shoot has to be moved to accommodate him-so he doesn’t miss his slot doing Diane Sawyer’s hair for Good Morning America.”
In this same July 08 Vogue interview, it states that “in diplomatic circles in London are buzzing with the perfectly reasonable idea that were she to become President, Hillary Clinton would reward her close friend and fundraiser with the post of American Ambassador in London.
Is that the reason Mrs. de Rothchild has made the leap from Democrat to Republican in one fell swoop? Hillary is no longer in the position to offer Mrs. Rothchild the role of American Ambassador in London. Ergo, if I can’t now get the Ambassadorship from Hillary, I can certainly get one from John McCain (if he wins). Since Mrs. Rothchild who is said to be worth $100 million pounds on her own without her husband’s money… and she has everything of a material nature any human being could possibly want… what would make life perfect for her in her home town of London? She wants the American Ambassadorship in London… Gotcha Lynn!!!!

The] Alaska Women Reject Palin rally was to be held outside on the lawn in front of the Loussac Library in midtown Anchorage . Home made signs were encouraged, and the idea was to make a statement that Sarah Palin does not speak for all Alaska women, or men. I had no idea what to expect.
The rally was organized by a small group of women, talking over coffee. It made me wonder what other things have started with small groups of women talking over coffee. It’s probably an impressive list. These women hatched the plan, printed up flyers, posted them around town, and sent notices to local media outlets. One of those media outlets was KBYR radio, home of Eddie Burke, a long-time uber-conservative Anchorage talk show host. Turns out that Eddie Burke not only announced the rally, but called the people who planned to attend the rally ‘a bunch of socialist baby-killing maggots’, and read the home phone numbers of the organizers aloud over the air, urging listeners to call and tell them what they thought. The women, of course, received some nasty, harassing and threatening messages.
I felt a bit apprehensive. I’d been disappointed before by the turnout at other rallies. Basically, in Anchorage , if you can get 25 people to show up at an event, it’s a success. So, I thought to myself, if we can actually get 100 people there that aren’t sent by Eddie Burke, we’ll be doing good. A real statement will have been made. I confess, I still had a mental image of 15 demonstrators surrounded by hundreds of menacing ‘socialist baby-killing maggot’ haters.
It’s a good thing I wasn’t tailgating when I saw the crowd in front of the library or I would have ended up in somebody’s trunk. When I got there, about 20 minutes early, the line of sign wavers stretched the full length of the library grounds, along the edge of the road, 6 or 7 people deep! I could hardly find a place to park. I nabbed one of the last spots in the library lot, and as I got out of the car and started walking, people seemed to join in from every direction, carrying signs.
Never, have I seen anything like it in my 17 and a half years living in Anchorage. The organizers had someone walk the rally with a counter, and they clicked off well over 1400 people (not including the 90 counter-demonstrators). This was the biggest political rally ever, in the history of the state. I was absolutely stunned. The second most amazing thing is how many people honked and gave the thumbs up as they drove by. And even those that didn’t honk looked wide-eyed and awe-struck at the huge crowd that was growing by the minute. This just doesn’t happen here.
Then, the infamous Eddie Burke showed up. He tried to talk to the media, and was instantly surrounded by a group of 20 people who started shouting O-BA-MA so loud he couldn’t be heard. Then passing cars started honking in a rhythmic pattern of 3, like the Obama chant, while the crowd cheered, hooted and waved their signs high

As a loyal Clinton supporter I wish Hillary would have gone there it would set up what is going to be an interesting match in 2012 Clinton/Palin, and as a loyal democrat im getting the feeling that my party is leaving us conservative dems behind we would be talking about a super majority right now, but no we have to make history now, Im voting for Obama but damn if we arent screwing it up. 2010 midterms will teach us dems a lesson in coalition building because the 500 million dollar man has drained our coffers and the DNC will be broke and when we finally get to a recession which is two quarters of negative growth we wont have any money for our candidates of the future. now liberals talk about how the GOP leaves on our own, funny we are not investing in the future of the party and thinking about the now, so democrats of the future your on own in raising money and networking because the DNC will be broke mid 2009 so much for plan 50 state plan Gov Dean envisioned.

The reason Mrs. Clinton declined to appear alongside Sarah Palin is because her sense of insecurity would be heightened – as she was so disgracefully downgraded by her own party (BYPASSED EVEN FOR THE VICE PRESIDENT NOMINEE STATUS)- whereas, Sarah Palin was so extraordinarily elevated by the republican party.

A very smart person you need to revap your history lessons.
A native of Illinois, Hillary Rodham first attracted national attention in 1969 for her remarks as the first student to deliver the commencement address at Wellesley College. She embarked on a career in law after graduating from Yale Law School in 1973. Following a stint as a Congressional legal counsel, she moved to Arkansas in 1974, and married Bill Clinton in 1975. She was later named the first female partner at Rose Law Firm in 1979, and was twice listed as one of the one hundred most influential lawyers in America. She was the First Lady of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981 and 1983 to 1992 and was active in a number of organizations concerned with child welfare, as well as sitting on the boards of Wal-Mart and several other corporations.
As First Lady of the United States, her major initiative, the Clinton health care plan, failed to gain approval from the U.S. Congress in 1994. In 1997 and 1999, Clinton played a role in advocating for the establishment of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, the Adoption and Safe Families Act, and the Foster Care Independence Act.

As a child, Hillary Rodham was a teacher’s favorite at her public schools in Park Ridge.[8][9] She participated in swimming, baseball and other sports, and earned many awards as a Brownie and Girl Scout.[8][9] She attended Maine East High School, where she participated in student council, the school newspaper, and was selected for National Honor Society.[10][2] For her senior year she was redistricted to Maine South High School, where she was a National Merit Finalist and graduated in 1965.[10] Her mother wanted her to have an independent, professional career,[11] while her father, otherwise a traditionalist, held the modern notion that his daughter’s abilities and opportunities should not be limited by gender.[12]
Raised in a politically conservative household,[11] at age thirteen Rodham helped canvass South Side Chicago following the very close 1960 U.S. presidential election, where she found evidence of electoral fraud against Republican candidate Richard Nixon.[13] She then volunteered to campaign for Republican candidate Barry Goldwater in the U.S. presidential election of 1964.[14] Rodham’s early political development was shaped most by her high school history teacher (like her father, a fervent anti-communist), who introduced her to Goldwater’s classic The Conscience of a Conservative,[15] and by her Methodist youth minister (like her mother, concerned with issues of social justice), with whom she saw and met civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. in Chicago in 1962.[16]
College
In 1965, Rodham enrolled at Wellesley College, where she majored in political science.[17] During her freshman year, she served as president of the Wellesley Young Republicans;[18][19] with this Rockefeller Republican-oriented group,[20] she supported the elections of John Lindsay and Edward Brooke.[21] She later stepped down from this position, as her views changed regarding the American Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War.[18] In a letter to her youth minister at this time, she described herself as “a mind conservative and a heart liberal.”[22] In contrast to the 1960s current that believed in radical actions against the political system, she sought to work for change within it.[23] In her junior year, Rodham became a supporter of the anti-war presidential nomination campaign of Democrat Eugene McCarthy.[24] Following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., Rodham organized a two-day student strike and worked with Wellesley’s black students to recruit more black students and faculty.[24] In early 1968, she was elected president of the Wellesley College Government Association and served through early 1969;[23][25] she was instrumental in keeping Wellesley from being embroiled in the student disruptions common to other colleges.[23] A number of her fellow students thought she might some day become the first woman President of the United States.[23] So she could better understand her changing political views, Professor Alan Schechter assigned Rodham to intern at the House Republican Conference, and she attended the “Wellesley in Washington” summer program.[24] Rodham was invited by moderate New York Republican Representative Charles Goodell to help Governor Nelson Rockefeller’s late-entry campaign for the Republican nomination.[24] Rodham attended the 1968 Republican National Convention in Miami. However, she was upset by how Richard Nixon’s campaign portrayed Rockefeller and by what she perceived as the convention’s “veiled” racist messages, and left the Republican Party for good.[24]
Returning to Wellesley for her final year, Rodham wrote her senior thesis about the tactics of radical community organizer Saul Alinsky under Professor Schechter (which, years later while she was First Lady, was suppressed at White House request and became the subject of some speculation).[26] In 1969, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts,[27] with departmental honors in political science.[26] Following pressure from some fellow students,[28] she became the first student in Wellesley College history to deliver their commencement address.[25] Her speech received a standing ovation lasting seven minutes.[23][29][30] She was featured in an article published in Life magazine,[31] due to the response to a part of her speech that criticized Senator Edward Brooke, who had spoken before her at the commencement.[32] She also appeared on Irv Kupcinet’s nationally syndicated television talk show as well as in Illinois and New England newspapers.[33] That summer, she worked her way across Alaska, washing dishes in Mount McKinley National Park and sliming salmon in a fish processing cannery in Valdez (which fired her and shut down overnight when she complained about unhealthy conditions).[34]
Law school
Rodham then entered Yale Law School, where she served on the editorial board of the Yale Review of Law and Social Action.[35] During her second year, she worked at the Yale Child Study Center,[36] learning about new research on early childhood brain development and working as a research assistant on the seminal work, Beyond the Best Interests of the Child (1973).[37][38] She also took on cases of child abuse at Yale-New Haven Hospital,[37] and volunteered at New Haven Legal Services to provide free legal advice for the poor.[36] In the summer of 1970, she was awarded a grant to work at Marian Wright Edelman’s Washington Research Project, where she was assigned to Senator Walter Mondale’s Subcommittee on Migratory Labor. There she researched migrant workers’ problems in housing, sanitation, health and education.[39] Edelman later became a significant mentor.[40]
In the late spring of 1971, she began dating Bill Clinton, also a law student at Yale. That summer, she interned at the Oakland, California, law firm of Treuhaft, Walker and Burnstein.[41] The firm was well-known for its support of constitutional rights, civil liberties, and radical causes (two of its four partners were current or former Communist Party members);[41] Rodham worked on child custody and other cases.[42] Clinton canceled his original summer plans, in order to live with her in California;[43] the couple continued living together in New Haven when they returned to law school.[42] The following summer, Rodham and Clinton campaigned in Texas for unsuccessful 1972 Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern.[44] She received a Juris Doctor degree from Yale in 1973,[27] having stayed on an extra year in order to be with Clinton.[45] Clinton first proposed marriage to her following graduation, but she declined.[45] She began a year of post-graduate study on children and medicine at the Yale Child Study Center.[46] Her first scholarly article, “Children Under the Law”, was published in the Harvard Educational Review in late 1973.[47] Discussing the new children’s rights movement, it stated that “child citizens” were “powerless individuals”[48] and argued that children should not be considered equally incompetent from birth to attaining legal age, but that rather courts should presume competence except when there is evidence otherwise, on a case-by-case basis.[49] The article became frequently cited in the field.[50]

Can you say Saving and Loans….
As a war hero and U.S. senator, John McCain has been chronicled in pictures.
There are grainy mug shots of a young McCain, printed in U.S. newspapers after his jet was shot down over North Vietnam. There are black-and-white images of his return, grinning and waving.
In happier times, there is McCain holding his newborn daughter while his wife, Cindy, smiles from her hospital bed.
But it is an innocent vacation picture that carries the reminder of the scandal that threatened his political career.
In the picture, taken in the Bahamas, McCain is seated on a bandstand while wearing an outrageous straw party hat. Next to him on the dais sits Charles Keating III, son of developer Charles H Keating Jr.
McCain calls the Keating scandal “my asterisk.” Over the years, his opponents have failed to turn it into a period.
It all started in March 1987. Charles H Keating Jr., the flamboyant developer and anti-porn crusader, needed help. The government was poised to seize Lincoln Savings and Loan, a freewheeling subsidiary of Keating’s American Continental Corp.
As federal auditors examined Lincoln, Keating was not content to wait and hope for the best. He had spread a lot of money around Washington, and it was time to call in his chits.
One of his first stops was Sen. Dennis DeConcini, D-Ariz.
The state’s senior senator was one of Keating’s most loyal friends in Congress, and for good reason. Keating had given thousands of dollars to DeConcini’s campaigns. At one point, DeConcini even pushed Keating for ambassador to the Bahamas, where Keating owned a luxurious vacation home.
Now Keating had a job for DeConcini. He wanted him to organize a meeting with regulators to deliver a message: Get off Lincoln’s back. Eventually, DeConcini would set up a meeting with five senators and the regulators. One of them was McCain.
McCain already knew Keating well. His ties to the home builder dated to 1981, when the two men met at a Navy League dinner where McCain spoke.
After the speech, Keating walked up to McCain and told him that he, too, was a Navy flier and that he greatly respected McCain’s war record. He met McCain’s wife and family. The two men became friends.
Charlie Keating always took care of his friends, especially those in politics. McCain was no exception.
In 1982, during McCain’s first run for the House, Keating held a fund-raiser for him, collecting more than $11,000 from 40 employees of American Continental Corp. McCain would spend more than $550,000 to win the primary and the general election.
In 1983, as McCain contemplated his House re-election, Keating hosted a $1,000-a-plate dinner for him, even though McCain had no serious competition. When McCain pushed for the Senate in 1986, Keating was there with more than $50,000.
By 1987, McCain had received about $112,000 in political contributions from Keating and his associates.
McCain also had carried a little water for Keating in Washington. While in the House, McCain, along with a majority of representatives, co-sponsored a resolution to delay new regulations designed to curb risky investments by thrifts such as Lincoln.
Reluctant participant
Despite his history with Keating, McCain was hesitant about intervening. At that point, he had been in the Senate only three months. DeConcini wanted McCain to fly to San Francisco with him and talk to the regulators. McCain refused.
Keating would not be dissuaded.
On March 24 at 9:30 a.m., Keating went to DeConcini’s office and asked him if the meeting with the regulators was on. DeConcini told Keating that McCain was nervous.
“McCain’s a wimp,” Keating replied, according to the book Trust Me, by Michael Binstein and Charles Bowden. “We’ll go talk to him.”
Keating had other business on Capitol Hill and did not reach McCain’s office until 1:30. A DeConcini staffer already had told McCain about the “wimp” insult.
When he arrived, Keating presented McCain with a laundry list of demands for the regulators.
McCain told Keating that he would attend the meeting and find out whether Keating was getting treated fairly but that was all.
The first meeting, on April 2, 1987, in DeConcini’s office, included Ed Gray, chairman of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, as well as four senators: DeConcini, McCain, Alan Cranston, D-Calif., and John Glenn, D-Ohio.
(Years later, McCain recalled that DeConcini started the meeting with a reference to “our friend at Lincoln.” McCain characterized it as “an unfortunate choice of words, which Gray would remember and repeat publicly many times.”)
For Keating, the meeting was a bust. Gray told the senators that as head of the loan board, he worried about the big picture. He didn’t have any specific information about Lincoln. Bank regulators in San Francisco would be versed in that, not him. Gray offered to set up a meeting between the senators and the San Francisco regulators.
The second meeting was April 9. The same four senators attended, along with Sen. Don Riegle, D-Mich. Also at the meeting were William Black, then deputy director of the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corp., James Cirona, president of the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, and Michael Patriarca, director of agency functions at the FSLIC.
In an interview with The Republic, Black said the meeting was a show of force by Keating, who wanted the senators to pressure the regulators into dropping their case against Lincoln. The thrift was in trouble for violating “direct investment” rules, which prohibited S&Ls from taking large ownership positions in various ventures.
“The Senate is a really small club, like the cliche goes,” Black said. “And you really did have one-twentieth of the Senate in one room, called by one guy, who was the biggest crook in the S&L debacle.”
Black said the senators could have accomplished their goal “if they had simply had us show up and see this incredible room and said, ‘Hi. Charles Keating asked us to meet with you. ‘Bye.’”
McCain previously had refused DeConcini’s request to meet with the Lincoln auditors themselves. In Worth the Fighting For, McCain wrote that he remained “a little troubled” at the prospect, “but since the chairman of the bank board didn’t seem to have a problem with the idea, maybe a discussion with the regulators wouldn’t be as problematic as I had earlier thought.”
McCain concedes that he failed to sense that Gray and the thrift examiners felt threatened by the senators’ meddling.
‘Always Hamlet’
The five senators, including McCain, seemed like a united front to Black.
“They presented themselves as a group,” Black said, “and DeConcini is the dad, who’s going to take the primary speaking role. Both meetings are in his office, and in both cases it’s we want this, with no one going, ‘What do you mean we, kemo sabe?’”
According to nearly verbatim notes taken by Black, McCain started the second meeting with a careful comment.
“One of our jobs as elected officials is to help constituents in a proper fashion,” McCain said. “ACC (American Continental Corp.) is a big employer and important to the local economy. I wouldn’t want any special favors for them. . . .
“I don’t want any part of our conversation to be improper.”
Black said the comment had the opposite effect for the regulators. It made them nervous about what might really be going on.
“McCain was the weirdest,” Black said. “They were all different in their own way. McCain was always Hamlet . . . wringing his hands about what to do.”
Glenn, a former astronaut and the first American to orbit the Earth, was not as tactful.
“To be blunt, you should charge them or get off their backs,” he told the regulators. “If things are bad there, get to them. Their view is that they took a failing business and put it back on its feet. It’s now viable and profitable. They took it off the endangered species list. Why has the exam dragged on and on and on?”
DeConcini added: “What’s wrong with this if they’re willing to clean up their act?”
Cirona, the banking official, told the senators that it was “very unusual” to hold a meeting to discuss a particular company.
DeConcini shot back: “It’s very unusual for us to have a company that could be put out of business by its regulators.”
The meeting went on. McCain was quiet. DeConcini carried the ball. The regulators told the senators that Lincoln was in trouble. The thrift, Cirona said, was a “ticking time bomb.”
Then Patriarca made a stunning comment, according to transcripts released later.
“We’re sending a criminal referral to the Department of Justice,” he said. “Not maybe, we’re sending one. This is an extraordinarily serious matter. It involves a whole range of imprudent actions. I can’t tell you strongly enough how serious this is. This is not a profitable institution.”
The statement made DeConcini back off a little.
“The criminality surprises me,” he said. “We’re not interested in discussing those issues. Our premise was that we had a viable institution concerned that it was being overregulated.”
“What can we say to Lincoln?” Glenn asked.
“Nothing,” Black responded, “with regard to the criminal referral. They haven’t and won’t be told by us that we’re making one.”
“You haven’t told them?” Glenn asked.
“No,” said Black. “Justice would skin us alive if we did. Those referrals are very confidential. We can’t prosecute anyone ourselves. All we can do is refer it to Justice.”
After the meeting, McCain was done with Keating.
“Again, I was troubled by the appearance of the meeting,” McCain said later. “I stated I didn’t want any special favors from them. I only wanted them (Lincoln Savings) to be fairly treated.”
Black doesn’t completely buy that argument. If McCain was concerned about Keating asking him to do things that were improper, why go to either meeting at all?
Black said McCain probably went because Keating was close to being the political godfather of Arizona and McCain still had plenty of ambition.
“Keating was incredibly powerful,” Black said. “And incredibly useful.”
McCain’s reservations aside, Keating accomplished his goal. He had bought some time, though the price was very high.
Short-lived reprieve
A month later, the San Francisco regulators finished a yearlong audit and recommended that Lincoln be seized. But the report was virtually ignored because of politics on the bank board.
Gray was being replaced as chairman by Danny Wall, who was more sympathetic to Keating.
The audit, which described Lincoln as a thrift reeling out of control, sat on a shelf.
In September 1987, the investigation was taken away from the San Francisco office, away from Black and Patriarca. In May 1988, it was transferred to Washington, where Lincoln would get a new audit.
It was a win for Keating. A battle, not the war.
Back in San Francisco, Black was fuming.
“Clearly, we were shot in the back,” he would say later.
Despite the reprieve, Keating’s businesses continued to spiral downward, taking the five senators with him. Together, the five had accepted more than $300,000 in contributions from Keating, and their critics added a new term to the American lexicon: “The Keating Five.”
The Keating Five became synonymous for the kind of political influence that money can buy. As the S&L failure deepened, the sheer magnitude of the losses hit the press. Billions of dollars had been squandered. The five senators were linked as the gang who shilled for an S&L bandit.
S&L “trading cards” came out. The Keating Five card showed Charles Keating holding up his hand, with a senator’s head adorning each finger. McCain was on Keating’s pinkie.
As the investigation dragged through 1988, McCain dodged the hardest blows. Most landed on DeConcini, who had arranged the meetings and had other close ties to Keating, including $50 million in loans from Keating to DeConcini’s aides.
But McCain made a critical error.
He had adopted the blanket defense that Keating was a constituent and that he had every right to ask his senators for help. In attending the meetings, McCain said, he simply wanted to make sure that Keating was treated like any other constituent.
Keating was no ordinary constituent to McCain.
On Oct. 8, 1989, The Arizona Republic revealed that McCain’s wife and her father had invested $359,100 in a Keating shopping center in April 1986, a year before McCain met with the regulators.
The paper also reported that the McCains, sometimes accompanied by their daughter and baby-sitter, had made at least nine trips at Keating’s expense, sometimes aboard the American Continental jet. Three of the trips were made during vacations to Keating’s opulent Bahamas retreat at Cat Cay.
McCain also did not pay Keating for some of the trips until years after they were taken, after he learned that Keating was in trouble over Lincoln. Total cost: $13,433.
When the story broke, McCain did nothing to help himself.
“You’re a liar,” McCain said when a Republic reporter asked him about the business relationship between his wife and Keating.
“That’s the spouse’s involvement, you idiot,” McCain said later in the same conversation. “You do understand English, don’t you?”
He also belittled reporters when they asked about his wife’s ties to Keating.
“It’s up to you to find that out, kids.”
The paper ran the story.
In his 2002 book, McCain confesses to “ridiculously immature behavior” during that particular interview and adds that The Republic reporters’ “persistence in questioning me about the matter provoked me to rage.”
“I don’t know how (The Republic journalists) would have reported the story had I been more civil and understanding or just more of a professional during the interview,” McCain wrote.
At a news conference after the story ran, McCain was a changed man. He stood calmly for 90 minutes and answered every question.
On the shopping center, his defense was simple. The deal did not involve him. The shares in the shopping center had been bought by a partnership set up between McCain’s wife and her father. (The couple also had a prenuptial agreement that separated Cindy McCain’s finances and dealings from his.)
But McCain also had to explain his trips with Keating and why he didn’t pay Keating back right away.
On that score, McCain admitted he had fouled up. He said he should have reimbursed Keating immediately, not waited several years. His staff said it was an oversight, but it looked bad, McCain jetting around with Keating, then going to bat for him with the federal regulators.
“I was in a hell of a mess,” McCain later would write.
Meanwhile, Lincoln continued to founder.
In April 1989, two years after the Keating Five meetings, the government seized Lincoln, which declared bankruptcy. In September 1990, Keating was booked into Los Angeles County Jail, charged with 42 counts of fraud. His bond was set at $5 million.
During Keating’s trial, the prosecution produced a parade of elderly investors who had lost their life’s savings by investing in American Continental junk bonds.

Among the Keating Five, McCain took the most direct contributions from Keating. But the investigation found that he was the least culpable, along with Glenn. McCain attended the meetings but did nothing afterward to stop Lincoln’s death spiral.
Lincoln was the most expensive failure in the national S&L scandal. Taxpayers lost more than $2 billion on the bailout. McCain also looked good in contrast to DeConcini, who continued to defend Keating until fall 1989, when federal regulators filed a $1.1 billion civil racketeering and fraud suit against Keating, accusing him of siphoning Lincoln’s deposits to his family and into political campaigns.
In January 1993, a federal jury convicted him of 73 counts of wire and bankruptcy fraud in the collapse of American Continental and Lincoln. Keating was sentenced to 12 years and seven months in prison but served just 50 months before the conviction was overturned on a technicality. In 1999, at age 75, he pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud. He was sentenced to time served.

Senator Clinton should issue a statement that she will appear at the rally provided the organizers first issue a televised public apology for not informing her that Governor Palin was also invited.
That way she takes the moral high ground and also makes herself invulnerable to charges of pettiness, selfishness, and partisanship.

Jo,
“I like Palin … she seems like a nice person.” That’s exactly what got Bush elected to office … he seemed like a nice person that you can have a beer with. That is not the best criteria for someone leading the most powerful nation on earth. I don’t want someone who’s “nice”. I want someone who’s competent, intelligent, with a depth of understanding of national economics and international politics. And just being able to see a sliver of Russia from my house doesn’t make me the expert on that country either. Clinton is right in bailing out of the protest appearance. The organizers should be ashamed to try and trick Hillary into appearing at their function, hoping for national media coverage because it would be the first time both Clinton and Palin would be together. Of course, Palin would want Hillary there … it would give some much-needed credibility with Hillary’s supporters, especially given her sorry performances on the ABC News interview. And I applaud Clinton on refusing to be drawn into this charade. Mrs. Palin’s level of experience (the right kind), and grasp of national (not just Alaskan) and international politics, depth and intellect pales so far to Hillary’s, she just wants to be on the same stage as her in the hopes that a little of the Clinton magic would rub off on her so she can lay claim to Hillary’s supporters. On way, No Palin.

This is in reponse to “Zen” who stated
“Hillary earned her position for herself thru hard fought primary battles. Palin was just chosen at the last minute by Maccain as a pandering for women voters.”
Excuse me, but Hillary “earned” her position by her marriage to Bill Clinton. She “earned” her position by not having enough courage to tell Bill Clinton to take a hike when he was so publicly caught committing adultery before the entire nation. She used her position to dupe the liberal voters of New York to elect her as a U.S. Senator. Now you tell me she is somehow more qualified than another woman who worked her way up from nothing….a woman who is the quintessential American woman who started with nothing….did not use her marriage to Todd Palin to gain anything….who used her own intellect and appeal to Alaskan voters to be elected as Mayor of Wasilla and as the Governor of Alaska….that this dynamic…real…everday, ordinary, woman is somehow less than a woman who was not true to herself in a situation that even the most ordinary American woman would have told her cheating husband to take a hike? What does that tell you about how Hillary would react in a similar situation where the security or any other tough situation this country could encounter. She could not stand up for herself in a personal situation that many, many American women did stand up for themselves. How the heck can you believe she would have the strength to stand up for this country in a situation analogous to her personal failure to stand up for herself? Sorry, but if I am going to vote for a woman, or a man, for such an important office….I want to be assured that persona has enough courage to stand up for his or her self in whatever their personal challenge is. Hillary obviously failed this challenge.
If I were advising Sarah Palin, I would tell her to appear in New York…ignore being “dis-invited” by the sponsoring group of this protest of the Iranian Hitler’s appearance….and GIVE HIM HELL!!

Hillary Clinton would rather score a cheap political point than actually help Israel. Well said James Howe

You Hillary haters just do not get it, do you? Why not tell both ladies up front what they were planning? Why let the Media be the ones to tell them that both of them would be there? Why is the Bush Administration letting this Guy into the USA at all, now that is the big question. He should not be able to come to American for anything, he is a terrorist and help Osama Bin Laden unlike Saddam Hussein

Man, does this ring a bell with anyone else? Doesn’t this Palin stuff seem exactly like the Bush WH charades?

Palin friends go on TV and state she needs a tanning bed to fight depression, wow I wonder who picked up the tab for that one.
Does this sound familiar? Can we say Bush….
Palin has given jobs to friends and appointed lobbyists to oversee industries they used to represent; Palin appointed a fund-raiser of hers, Deborah Richter, as director of the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend Division, and she hired Cora Crome as her fisheries-policy adviser. An industry lobbyist, Crome had worked for the United Fishermen of Alaska, and had been married to a wealthy commercial fisherman.
Michael Luo provides blessed clarity. “The $60-a-day allowance is available for state employees when traveling on official state business to cover meals and other sundry expenses,” he writes, remembering to include the basic facts and failing to self-contradict. Bottom line: In her first seventeen months in office, Palin banked $17,059 in such swag, sixty dollars at a time. (She took the per diem for over 300 nights.) The hockey mom took this swag from the state—for her meals, while living at home.
Palin didn’t can the chef “after becoming governor;” she canned the chef in late June 2007, after the chef had cooked for her kids for her first seven months in office. She canned the chef when her kids were leaving the mansion for the summer. Chef, Stephanie Marnon, was first reassigned as a constituent relations assistant in the governor’s office, and later to the state museum and legislative lounge, still cooking all the time.
Does she even know the truth, maybe she is having memory lapses

James Howe, so you say Hillary should have told Bill to take a hike. McCain had an affair on his wife with Cindy 1 year before they divorced. Rudy G Had an on going affair with the woman he married. Affairs are not a Democrat or a Republican thing. But I do see you sticking with McCain, I wonder why if you are so agaist affairs? So much for Family Values. Oh by the way Johns First wife was is a very bad Car accident and recovering when john left her for a younger woman with a Rich Daddy. Yep shows what he is all about. Dam did I mention that John lied to Cindy about how old he was?
