Obama Dismisses Sexism Complaints From McCain-Palin Campaign as ‘Working the Refs’

At a press availability just now in York, Pa., I had an opportunity to ask Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., about the pushback from Republicans that the way a lot of the media and Democrats –- including some from his campaign — have reacted to Gov. Sarah Palin’s appointment has been sexist, dismissive of the work she’s accomplished, and different than how they would act if she were a male.

"Listen," Obama said, "if they want to work the refs, they are free to do so, and I think the public can make their judgments about this.

"You know, the notion that any questions about her work in Alaska is somehow not relevant to her potentially being vice president of the United States, doesn’t make too much sense to me," he continued. "I think she’s got a compelling story, but I assume that she wants to be treated the same way that guys want to be treated — which means that their records are under scrutiny."

Obama noted, "I’ve been through this for 19 months. She’s been through it, what, for four days so far?"

The McLame campaign is always trying to play the victim. Its pathetic and the media wont call him out for it.

Didn’t Obama also try to portray the Clintons as racist during the Primary? No wonder Bill Clinton was running around Denver behind the scenes calling him a Chicago thug.

PALIN will have to do better than a good speech. You see, for right now she is drawing a lot of attention. But so dis paris hilton’s sex tape. The fact is this… do you think that the people who support the democratic party will change there minds because of snides remarks about their party? There are more people AGAINST the republicans this year. that means if you anger them, you just make them stronger. Why do you think obama is such a classy man?… because it WINS PEOPLE OVER! in 4 days barack racked in 8 million since McCain’s V.P. See what i mean? Just makes us stronger.

What is wrong with it Ryan? Obama should stop making the Racism and Sexism references even if he thinks it is coming from opponent. Thats were the experience count? Obama should know which words to use where and make a responsible statements.

Good point Obama….and I have looked at her resume and yours and you fall short, especially at the top of your ticket. You have had months of this celebrity ride, and now Gov. Palin will have a about 8 weeks. Not alot of time.
I saw the press q and a and BO seems rattled and angrier than usual. He did not see this Governor coming.
HILLARY SUPPORTER FOR McCAIN/PALIN

Gov Palin has gone through more BS from the press in four days than Obama has had all along. Like usual, he is way off target in his comments and totally self-centered – Be afraid Obama, be real afraid, This Gov is going to eat your lunch.

Thank you, that is so big of you Obama and I have made my judgement. I am not voting for your SEXIST campaign against Hillary Clinton and all of her supporters. You have matured in the last month. What a waste of those other 8.

What does Obama mean when he says he’s “been through it for 19 months?” Been through what? Sarah Palin has been objected to more scrutiny in two days than Obama has been in nearly two years. The reporters can question whether Palin’s baby really belongs to her, but they can’t ask Obama how he feels about affirmative action? The media attacked Hillary, and treated Obama with kid gloves. Now they are doing the same to Sarah Palin. Governor Ed Rendell was right – the coverage of Barack Obama has been embarrassing. I’m only one Democratic woman, but I will NEVER vote for this man, and the meda is a big part of the reason.

Amazing how whiney the “straight talk express” has gotten since the shined up knob going by Steve Schmidt has taken the helm. Has McCain or Palin answered a direct question from the press in the last several weeks without hushed huddles of “advisors” whatever you need to call them.
Palin is a pathetic hack who isn’t qualified for anything outside of her little end-times loving tongue speaking cult, oops, I mean church.

Posted by: Bob Lees | September 4, 2008, 4:42 pm 4:42 pm

I think the line “which means that their records are under scrutiny” is pretty hilarious, considering the attack on Stanley Kurtz and WGN the Obama campaign called for when Kurtz looked into his records involving the Annenberg Challenge.

Posted by: MayBee | September 4, 2008, 4:42 pm 4:42 pm

Didn’t Obama also say that Hillary’s “claws come out” when she’s tired? Of course Obama wouldn’t recognize sexism when he sees it. He’s part of the problem.

I volunteer vacations and week ends to help Habitat for Humanity. Also, I am a registered Republican. Gov. Palin remarks last night made fun not only of Sen Obama, but also of me and my fellow volunteers. I consider myself part of a group of community organizers who strive to make life just a little better for those less fortunate. I will not be voting for the McCain/Pain ticket. I suppose since my volunteering is consider beneath the GOP, I will cast my lot with the Democrats.

so, did I miss the part where members of the media asked whether Obama was planning to take a paternity test to prove he was the father of his girls? [Because journalists did ask that about Palin.] Did I miss the part where members of the media asked how Obama could serve as President and be away from his young children so much [Because they did ask that about Palin.] Did I miss the part where members of the media discussed his appearance and his hairstyle. [Because they did do that to Palin.] Did I miss the part where members of the media stressed that Obama had help from speechwriters, so it wasn’t really his speech. [BEcause they've said that about Palin] Did I miss the part where members of the media splashed Obama on the cover of US, with a header like “Scandals and Lies”? [Because they did that to Palin.] And, did I miss the part where members of the media discussed how Obama’s habits/health could have impacted any issues with his children’s health or development. [Because they did that with Palin.]
Politicians aren’t the only ones who know how to refute a claim by putting a spin on answers. Lawyers do it. MSM does it, too. Any wonder so many people hate all 3?

The lowest point in the coverage of Sarah Palin was when Mark Shields on PBS pointed out that Bristol is now the most famous pregnant 17-year old in the country. His assertion was that Sarah Palin is a bad mother because she chose to put her daughter in a position where she would be subjected to scrutiny. Mark Shields has been pro-Obama from Day 1. Everything out of this man’s mouth is designed to make Obama look good and everyone else look bad. Shields also trashed Hillary every chance he got.

Henry Kissinger is supporting John McCain and knows he’d be a stern defender of our country and look for a means to improve the International climate. He basically just endorsed McCain/Palin and is a brilliant Foreign Affairs expert.

$27 MILLION – The amount of federal pork Mayor Palin brought to tiny Wasilla, Alaska (pop. < 7000)
$700 MILLION – The amount of federal pork Governor Palin brought to dripping with oil production tax Alaska (pop. 700,000)
$1700 – Payment to every resident of Alaska: man, woman and child, coming from oil production taxes.
August 4, 2008 – Date of press release from Governor Palin PRAISING Barack Obama's energy policy (still available in Google's cache – just google "Palin praised Obama energy")
So what was Mayor Sara Palin's favorite hobby: HUNTING FOR FEDERAL PORK
She was for the 'bridge to nowhere' when running for Governor. She supported the earmark for this project and only changed her position when it became a national embarassment — BUT KEPT THE MONEY FOR OTHER PORK PROJECTS.
She visited tiny Ketchikan Alaska and said it was demeaning to call their project 'the bridge to nowhere'. But when she appeared with John McCain, she used the same phrase!

Obama is kidding, right? He was under scrutiny for 19 months? What did Bill Maher say about the primary season? \ He doesn’t know what scrutiny is. He should be Hillary Clinton, than come and talk to me about it. Wimp! And, the Clintons are not racist people. If you did your homework you nit you’d see that they championed the causes of women, minorities, gays, etc. The reason Obama is very close to McCain in the polling and not getting a larger margin is because of how himself and the left wing of the Dems attacked the Clintons and Clinton supporters this past primary season. He disgusted us enough with his behavior and his hooligan follower’s behavior, that we will NEVER vote for him now. He blew it, his nutty followers blew it and the Dem party blew it. Put the blame where it squarely belongs, on him. Good riddance! I hope he loses big time to John McCain in November. I will dance in the streets! And I have been a lifelong Democrat and I won’t be voting Democratic for a long, long time to come because I am that disgusted. Oh yes, Obama says that if she wants to be treated like one of the guys, blah, blah, blah… Until he gets the business and than he starts saying how he is being attacked, etc. What a big baby! Does he still use a pacifier? Good grief!

The New Dems can’t make up their minds. “Who is Sarah? She’s done nothing.” Then they slam all the trash we have to go through to figure out what is true/false. So far all their “stories” have proven to be NO BIG DEAL. Like the trooper who threatened to kill her dad, being fired. Oh yeah, let’s defend that guy.

Laura, no problem. You guys stonewall Hillary because we won’t vote for that elitist sexist pig Obama and we will do the same thing every time you guys jump on someone’s bandwagon. republicans are such hypocrites
palin has zero experience, mccain is older then sin and could very easily not make it through his first term, which would give us palin as president…
thats not scary to you?
her ideals and philosophies on life is not scary to you? Especially those taht call themselves democrats? i mean you cant really be democrats and be ok with palins thoughts on life… its completely anti democrat… lol

Posted by: Bhrandon | September 4, 2008, 5:05 pm 5:05 pm

As you know, despite earlier promises to the contrary, Sarah Palin is now refusing to cooperate with the trooper-gate investigation. Her lawyer now says she will refuse to be deposed unless the head of the current investigation relinquishes control and hands the investigation over to the state Personnel Board made up of three of Gov. Palin’s appointees. We’ve been trying to see whether Palin’s argument has any merit under Alaska law. And the former Alaska Attorney General we just spoke to told us, in essence, that it’s a bunch of bunk.
Not surprising, since the whole gambit is an effort to push any depositions out past the election.
if Obamas name was there instead of palins you guys would be freaking out
but its ok, palin is fine, scandals are fine for the gop, you are so worried about experience and then you say yay when you ahve someone with zero experience riding shot gun.

Turning a national election into a pickup game of hoops isn’t exactly Presidential, but if we must, this is the Super Bowl. No one is going to play nice.
But the sexism played on Clinton and now being replayed by the MSM isn’t going to be a winning play.

Let’s equal the playing field here. Obama and his cronies can slam the woman all they want and anyone who wants to can slam the black race. What do you think? Bhrandon: I am talking about the blatant sexism that existed during the primary season. Obama kept spewing one insulting comment after another towards HIllary Clinton and that was just fine with everyone. But Bill Clinton stated FACTS that black candidate carried many southern states in other elections but they didn’t get the nomination and everyone was screaming that he was a racist. What I am saying is if women can be slammed because they are women than those women have the right to slam others if they are a different race, etc. if they want to. That is what I am saying. How long do you think it would go on before they started screaming fowl from Obama’s group? If he wants the gloves completely off than let’s do it all the way around! I’m all for it!

what were these sexist statments by obama during the primaires?
and bill clinton was seen as saying obama only won that state because he was black and it was no big deal because other black people had wont that state before…
it is dismissive is it not?
if that was obama saying that to hillary flip black or african american for women or female and youd say he was being dismissive
so…. why the double standard?
isnt bill clinton being dismissive?
and it doesnt matter, im all good with bill clinton, im all good with the clintons, i think all democrats are good with the clintons and the obamas and we will win in november…
i was a hillary supporter until she started flinging mud… using republican tactics againts a fellow democrat… then i gave obama some time and actually listened to his message and i really really liked his vision of america
it was what i had been waiting for in politics for a long time…

The cronies are the entire left wing of the Dems who supported Obama in the primary season. Obviously, those cronies did not call Obama aside and tell him to cut it out. They allowed it to go on and on and on, that is what I am talking about. And, I am talking about his cronies, his supporters, who think he is right up there with jesus walking on the water. Many of you were slamming Hillary supporters during the primary season and we have had enough! When I saw the party that I had supported my entire life just stand idly by and allow obama to treat the clintons like that I thought to myself, “Why am I in the democrat party?” They are not protecting my gender but are letting this guy rip it a part? So, i thought, there is no difference now as to what party I vote for because none of them really care about me and my gender. And, the added plus to voting republican was to hopefully stop Obama from getting elected so that next time a woman runs for President the Dems will tell their guy, notice I said guy and not boy because you would say racist, racist, racist, talk about who is oversensitive!, that they better keep their big mouths on the issues and not make sexist comments!!

“How the heck did Obama beat Hillary? Honestly, can someone provide a recap?”
Superior fundraising and ground game operation.
Obama had offices in states Hillary ignored winning them by absurd margins and fought her to a standstill in states that should have been hers.
That and he had miilions of donors and was hauling in $30M to $50M a month.
They did a good job of turning the tables on Hillary on most of her attacks and I thought overall they edged out Hillary in terms of ad aquality/effectiveness.

Tell Obama to stay home and not to come and visit the Wilkes-barre/scranton area this week. He couldn’t give us the time of day during the primary season so why bother now? We don’t want him! He can come here as much as he wants but many very wealthy supporters of the Clintons are helping us run commercials so that we can defeat Obama in the fall. He has no clue as to what he is up against and how much he has aggravated people.

You mean the media love that John McCain gets….for 8 years and counting?
The media like both Prez picks.
“making it all the more amazing that Hillar GOT MORE VOTES.”
Except she didn’t.
Vote totals aren’t tabulated for some caucuses (which hurts Obama more than Hillary), MI and Fl do not count.
Obama beat her by 40,000 votes.
And over 100 pledged delegates.
And that was after Obama had begun moving into GE mode. Hillary ran practically unopposed in PR.

Sarah Palin has held a long time belief that people in opposite races should not date. She is a self confessed “redneck”.
She obtained a business license a long time ago, just in case her political life didn’t mesh, and named the business, “Rouge Cou” french for Redneck.
She will definitely appeal to the traditional Republican base.

you need to quote the whole thing that obama said if you are going to quote him
if you want fair treatment as a women, then start treating others fairly…
obama didnt just come otu and say… people in small towns are angry and cling to guns and religion
have a good night san francisco
he was asked why rural voters dont vote or vote a certain way
his actual reply was
You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them…And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.
And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
you see they vote for people who are for guns, who are for religion, or anti immigrant… they dont vote for jobs or taxes
he was saying this is thier voting pattern because this is what htey are thinking
he has said cling was too strong of a word and wasnt the best way to say it… but the point is still clear and it isnt a statment that is a bash or a mocking statment at all
do some research… mccain and palin flub lines all the time, but thats ok
you shoudl be able to see waht he was getting at

Okay, Ryan, if they were primaries rather than caucus Hillary would win”
What I said was that some caucuses are not included in popular vote totals because they do not keep popular vote totals (caucuses for IA, ME, NV & WA).
Even with FL(which was a straw vote practically) included Obama got 40,000 more votes than Hillary.

Rouge Cou said this:
Sarah Palin has held a long time belief that people in opposite races should not date. She is a self confessed “redneck”.
****
What a crock. We’ll wait where you find a link to any statement she’s made that people of the opposite race shouldn’t date.
Can’t do it? Oh, I didn’t think so.

GREAT JOB GOV PALIN!!!! You have EARNED my VOTE!!!
Obama is the one that said”She was a small town mayor” – WELL – She is a US GOV – from our largest State -
Palin was only defending herself against the obama gang’s attacks on her qualifications.

The Alaska Dept of Education and Early Development web site and media articles show that Palin actually raised spending from $26,900 per student to $73,840 by 2011.

Oh no, there is no sexism here. Gov. Palin is ridiculed for lack of experience even though she’s a former Mayor and present Gov, but Obama’s 200 days as a Senator before he jumped on the campaign trail is sufficient.
Please. There are different standards here, for sure. Don’t think average Americans don’t notice.
Too many Democrats are just plain dumb. They should have nominated Hillary. Now they’ll be lucky as hell to win in a squeaker. I’ll be surprised if they pull it off.

Peaches -In addition to slashing special needs fundings, which is important to many families, and which you apparently find mockable, you can find plenty evidence of earmark sending and fiscal irresponsibility. After Palin finished being mayor of Wasilla, she left a budget with a budget deficit in the millions. She originally started off with a balanced budget. It’s not just her lack of regard to the needs of people that’s disconcerting, but also her carelessness with funding which is well documented. Don’t knock the handicapped and vulnerable; that’s too low of a blow, lady. I’m out of here for the evening, but I’ll be happy to get bak with you.

Kat – I gave the stats down thread which show how STate of Alaska financial records put to bed the absolute lie that Palin cut special needs funding.
She RAISED funding and by a HUGE amount.
But keep lying. And whining.

For the people who want to keep lying about how Palin presumably cut special needs funding:
The Alaska Dept of Education and Early Development web site and media articles show that Palin actually raised spending from $26,900 per student to $73,840 by 2011.
Now, I know we might count a little differently here in bitter small town America, but that’s a huge funding increase. Not a decrease.

Kat – how about you show me a post where I made fun of people with special needs? Oh, can’t do it? That’s because it never happened.
