Obama Implies McCain Puts Other Countries First
A pretty scathing charge from Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., this morning as he spoke to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and assailed Sen. John McCain’s, R-Ariz., position on free trade.
"Just ask the machinists in Pennsylvania who build Harley-Davidsons," Obama said of McCain’s record. "Because John McCain didn’t just oppose the requirement that the government buy American-made motorcycles, he called Buy American provisions ‘disgraceful.’ Just ask the workers across this country who have seen their jobs outsourced. The very companies that shipped their jobs overseas have been rewarded with billions of dollars in tax breaks that John McCain supports and plans to continue.
"So, when American workers hear John McCain talking about putting ‘Country First,’" Obama said, "it’s fair to ask –- which country?"
Um … isn’t that pretty much the dictionary definition of questioning someone’s patriotism?

Well, McCain keeps implying that Obama isn’t patriotic.
Perhaps this answers your earlier statement about this being the third time Obama said the gloves would come off. Perhaps he meant it this time.
Obama could also say, had Senator McCain not started down this line I would not have been forced to attack his patriotism.

To be fair, how many “outsourced” jobs can be laid at the feet of unions, corporate taxes and the enviro-nazis? Aren’t the machinists striking Boeing, the maker of a good portion of US military aircraft, right now?

“Um…isn’t that pretty much the dictionary definition of questioning someone’s patriotism?”
OK – so instead of snark – can you state whether Obama’s statements are true or not? Or are you simply picking up the bat for McCain?
Seriously, if what Obama said is based in fact – then his question legitimate… your cynicism is not.
In case you’re interested, patriotism is the love of one’s country. It never says anything about exclusive love – so no, what Obama asked is not the ‘dictionary definition.’ Obama seems to be questioning the results of McCain’s legislative actions, not his ‘love’ of his country.
Marriam-Webster definition:
patriotism
Main Entry:
pa·tri·ot·ism
Pronunciation:
\ˈpā-trē-ə-ˌti-zəm, chiefly British ˈpa-\
Function:
noun
Date:
circa 1726
: love for or devotion to one’s country

When McCain does it, he has absolutely no facts supporting his contention.
Obama’s is factually accurate. He is putting other countries in front of American companies, which mean that Americans in PA lost jobs which were outsourced.
Factually 100% accurate.

Though I did love the fauz outrage Obama had when McCain said Obama would lose the war in Iraq to win the election and Obama went off about how he’d protect his children. So Barry is admitting the war in Iraq has to deal with american national security and still wants to lose it.
McCain point is one of spending. Hell we’re shelling out millions more then we should so defense contractors stay afloat and that is partly what sunk the Navy’s Zumwalt class destroyer program. So now the Navy has to keep older destroyers in service because they HAD to try to keep navy yards afloat because they can’t themselves.

No, Jake that is not questioning someone’s patriotism. We all know that John McCain’s service to our country makes him a patriot; however, McCain’s policy decisions are not the best for our nation. Sending jobs overseas, profits to privileged Americans, and eliminating much-need capital by failing to tax American corporations does indeed help *other* nations and not our own. It is a fair point.

The outsourcing of the software industry has nothing to do with unions. There are almost no unions in that industry particularly in the work at will states. It simply came down to costs. Have American workers priced themselves out of market? In too many cases, yes. Why haven’t Doctors priced themselves out of their markets? Competition? Regulation? What?
Is it bad management? People who follow the Jack Welch strategy for slash and burn don’t often admit that under Welch, the quality of GE products plunged with the morale. If you find you have to use Six Sigma, you’re already in trouble.
We chose to elect Bush twice.
We chose to drive SUVs.
We chose to ignore our allies and went to war in Iraq anyway.
We might want to quit blaming our government and ask ourselves if we are at the root of it because we demand perfect safety AND freedom and these are oxymorons. We demand saintly leaders AND effective government and these are impossible.
I admire Webster’s eloquence, but Jabez made the deal and a deal is a deal.
Until it comes to our own front doors.
When America is willing to value hard work and reward for value instead of waiting for the government to show up with a check, then we can talk fair labor practices. Otherwise, wait until you try to buy gas tonight if you didn’t fill up the tank yesterday.
The rough justice is SUVs are selling for pennies and reconditioned VW Beetles are selling for a ten grand.

Jobs being outsourced have taken away millions of jobs from the America workers. Voters are looking for a balance before the corporations outsource everything. McCain’s said a few weeks ago the economy was fine. This doesn’t give too much confidence to the voters. Even the army jobs are being outsourced. China has now moved ahead in manufacturing. Is China going to become the next superpower? America done in by it elections every two and four years? Questions about jobs being outsourced are not questioning ones patriotism but asking what direction does America really what to go in. Do the America workers have any say in this process or is it decided in Washington DC? Or is it decided by the Corporations? How can the Corporations still make a profit without out sourcing millions of more America jobs. Perhaps technology and retooling of the industries will be a start. Obama has been talking about this for months now.

guess what gang …do you see what is happening because the administration for the last 8 years has taken advantage of allowing this open market to flow freely without standards…
when our economy is going in the tanker because we can’t compete because we actually have labor laws…yeah …it’s time for a little protectionism and pressure on international standards.
That does not make it a protectionist stance over all…but right now we have swung the other way and these huge countries with no minimum wage context or hourly maximum or age minimum
or quality or standard minimum
no parity between worker and production standards…
are walking all over our country that respects all of us as people to have those standards.
if we open our market to them…there needs to be some fairness and parity in standards…
or else there needs to be some financial influx to create parity.
and if you all want to call that protectionism…go ahead…
but that doesn’t make the whole US stance “protectionism”

Obama went into politics to win the White House. Why is this evident? B/c Mr. Obama voted “present” over 100 times so his votes would not stir any controversies as he placed himself on the ballot for president. He spent more time running for president than he did in the Senate!
Come on people wake up!!! After 19 months of the same rhetoric, we’re all tired of hearing his loud lectures and slick teleprompter speeches. I agree with cindyct – does being a POW give you automatic and lifetime protection from ever being criticized? McCain’s campaign slogan itself is an attack on Obama’s patriotism – it implies – actually, it’s pretty explicit – that he put’s country first while Obama does not. Well, Obama is calling him out on that. It’s not questioning McCain’s love of country, it’s questioning his judgement in doing what is best for our nation.
And folks, this is an attack based on issues. McCain’s attacks are based on BS like celebrity and or lies about sex ed bills or claims of sexism where none exists. Obama – agree with him or not – is saying that his economic and trade policies would be better for American workers than McCain’s. And I’m sure he talked about those policies. McCain’s “education” ad falsely accused Obama of wanting to teach kindergarten kids about homosexuality and sexual intercourse. What I didn’t hear in that ad was what McCain proposes to do on the sex-education front and for education in general. It was a pure attack based on distortions, offering no alternate solutions.

Obama has no leg to stand on when it comes to outsourcing jobs. He wants to substantially increase corporate and capital gains taxes.
Here’s a little lesson on taxation for the Daily Kos/Democratic Underground crowd that apparently got the smoke signal from Arianna and are now posting madly away about unpatriotic John McCain:
One major reason jobs are being outsourced is because the US has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the industrialized world. Higher than the European Union. Higher than China and India. Companies operate in other countries so they can game the lower taxes through transfer pricing. So OBAMA would actually make the situation WORSE. Not better!
This is so typical of Obama’s arrogance: He actually thinks he knows something about economics but he’s completely clueless.

I am not the smartest guy in the world
but your argument against Obama doesn’t even make sense
that companies move production over seas because they are taxed so high…so making the various countries raise their standards or charging those companies more to be manufacturing overseas (removing tax breaks that do so), will drive them further away …even though they get the privilege and financial structure of a domestic company that is?
I am pretty sure you are wrong on this one.
Posted by: dl (the real one) | September 12, 2008, 5:10 pm 5:10 pm
Diane Morrisey, why would outsourcing lower a company’s tax rate? It certainly lowers the amount of money they pay out for salary, but it should have no effect on how much *income* they take in and certainly nothing to do with capital gains, both of which are what we tax.
Now, doing business and selling things *outside* the country certainly has an effect on your tax liability, but outsourcing jobs should have little to no effect except in that you don’t have to hire expensive employees.
Posted by: joe | September 12, 2008, 5:12 pm 5:12 pm
Again with the Democrat line that history ends when an American loses his job. If the phone company switched calls today the way they did 75 years ago, they would have to employ every working age woman to handle the traffic. Universal female employment. Great idea, right? Except that there would be no cell phones, fax machines, nor an Internet under those circumstances.
Whenever an employer finds a cheaper way to do something, that frees up capital for investment in new ventures which in turn creates jobs. This is evidenced by the fact that there aren’t any working age women starving in the streets because they don’t have jobs as phone operators.
Moving jobs overseas has the added benefit of creating a middle class in the destination country. That middle class becomes a new market for US goods. Economics 101.
Contrary to his image as an agent of Hope, once again Obama falls back on the Democratic politics of fear. “Obama chooses his words carefully”, says McCaint.
McCaint was ALWAYS intimidated by Barack’s superior intellect, and rightly so.
And for that reason, McCaint is reading into Obama’s talk really dumb things that only a fool would say — ‘Sarah Palin a pig’..
So an alert mind can go back now and recognize that McCaint was indeed calling Hilary Clinton a pig, when he used the expression ‘lipstick on a pig’.
Of course, that would be right up the misogynistic McCaint alley to desert and berate females, including his wives.

“more ppl are working today than ever before. and the ave income in america is at its highest point eve”
Numbers released by the U.S. Census Bureau this morning show that the inflation-adjusted incomes of median households rose by 1.3% in 2007 from the previous year, from $49,568 in 2006 to $50,233 in 2007 (2007 dollars), while the overall poverty rate or increased slightly, from 12.3% to 12.5%. Given the weakening job market last year, the median income of working-age households (those headed by someone less than 65) rose insignificantly in 2007, and was $2,010 below its 2000 level.

As soon as Barack Obama really accomplishes something – other than writing his memoirs, calling other people racist who don’t agree with him, screwing up the areas he is supposed to be representing and throwing the people who have helped him under the bus – I’ll be far more likely to listen to what he has to say. So far, however, Obama is the one with a credibility problem, so it’s kind of hard to pay that much attention to his attacks on anyone.
Look at how he treated Hillary Clinton, whom he is now strong-arming to help him take down McCain and Palin. He’s a user, and the only thing he cares about, in my view, is his own ambition.

Who is the mainstream media? Between Fox News talking about how the mainstream media isn’t reporting on something (does that make them fringe media?) and people going on here and talking about the evils of the mainstream media (again, as opposed to the fringe media?), you have to wonder if this is just a imaginary scapegoat that people can blame for the failures of their respective candidate.

McCain has been saying for a long time that Obama would rather lose a war (the Iraq war) than the election. McCain’s slogan “country first” clearly implies Obama does not share the same view.

The reason jobs are moving overseas isn’t straight forward. There isn’t just one reason.
Part of it has to do with having free trade with countries that give massive subsidies to industries and then dump products over here below cost causing our companies to go out of business.
Other reasons have to do with countries like China requiring that R&D be done on China mainland if a company wants to sell products in China – effectively giving them access to trade secrets and of course, high technology jobs.
There is of course the basic fact that employees are paid a whole lot less in other countries and it is simply cheaper to do business there. You don’t have to worry about 40 hour work weeks, child labor laws, environmental laws, work safety, overtime, etc, The major negative relates to management of work, but there are no governmental imposed negatives, so companies look at their bottom line and do it.
Then there is the whole manipulation of currency that China engages in making their currency significantly weaker than it should be further making it harder for American workers and American products to compete.
Basically what we have now is free trade that is incredibly unfair.

We all want jobs, good jobs but with high school dropout rates in our country so high how does any company compete in an environment with so many having so little, in the way of job skills, to offer? It is a proven fact: the better the training/education; the better the pay.
The days when a man could paint a logo on a golf ball for 8 hours a day, receive pay that would support him and a family are over.

Tennessee, which has a democratic governor and 2 republican senators, are doing everything possible to land overseas companies to set up in their state. Alabama is too — they have gotten Thyssen Steel from Germany, Hyundai, Toyota,Cinram and many more. With the Dollar low, these companies can make their product here. They pay way above average wages because they are used to European wages that are ludicrious. They have great benefits — unions hate them because they rely on 401K instead of pension. But they match and give generous profit sharing. More importantly, the people are working!!

If elected, John McCain is going to end up like President Ulysses Grant. A former military man who was completely controlled by big business. Grant was also considered a maverick in his day but ended up as one of the worst Presidents in history. Corruption, scandals and the common man completely neglected in favor of the moneyed elite. Multinational companies love John McCain because he puts them first before the average American. China loves McCain as well, he is their boy. Mexico’s former President Vicente Fox loves John McCain. US citizenship is not going to be worth dirt after McCain opens the border and floods the US with illegals.

“why companies go overseas is because we have the highest corporate tax rates in the world.”
Wrong again. Japan has the highest rate in the world. What you also neglect to mention is that we have more tax loopholes, and the most complicated set of procedures for getting out of paying taxes, of any of country of the developed worlds. Countless companies hardly even pay their taxes in the first place. Others launder their money through the Cayman Islands.
Jobs leave because of globalization. If we want to fix this we can do one of two things: stop letting countries like China steal our R&D and rescind their preferential trade status. Or we have to eliminate the minimum wage and start paying American workers China-style slave wages.
Or we can retrain by refocusing our economy on future jobs… like that strange fellow running for president keeps suggesting.

Uh. What in hell does socialism have to do with protectionism? The United States had protectionists trade policies for most of its history. Are you saying that we were socialists?
And protectionism works pretty well for some countries like China. In fact, every country on the planet that is now a major power had protectionist trade policies up until recently.
This whole free trade thing was just a ploy in order to get other countries to agree to free trade so that we could sell our products there. Unfortunately what happened was that we went free trade, the other countries *said* they were going free trade, but in reality implemented massive subsidies to protect their own industries and at the same time, put up massive regulation about what could be imported and how much and what paperwork needed to be filled out… essentially blocking the US from selling things in that country.
The US has a *massive* trade deficit. In what weird world do you think that us lowering our requirements for trade even lower than they are now would result in us *exporting* more products?

McCain voted against increasing the fuel efficiency of our cars in 2003 and 2005 and “missed” the vote in 2007.
What was the spin on why those “No” votes were bad for the US citizens and bad for decreasing our dependency on foreign oil?
Who gets rich when we “Drill, Baby, Drill”? Not me. Not you. The supply of crude and refined will continue to be controlled to keep the price at or near the current high price that Americans are evidently grudgingly but willing to pay. Big Oil Companies get rich, Lobbyists for them get rich, and Alaskans get bigger rebate checks.
“Drill Baby Drill” just passes the hot potato to the next generation. That is not responsible nor is it using good judgment.
What is good for America is not what most Americans want to hear or are willing to vote for. Shameful.

He didn’t question McCain’s military service or love of country, he questioned which country McCain is putting first when it comes to keeping jobs here at home. JOBS ARE AN ISSUE. THE ECONOMY IS AN ISSUE. And then you accuse the Senator of not talking about the issues when he is clearly talking about the issues.

Protectionism. Just the way for all of us to lose our a$$es in a world economy. Obama may be an expert in lowering the level of the ocean but he doesn’t know jack about economics. E.g., his windfall profits taxes: if we do it to oil, why don’t we do it to every other business whose profits have shot up recently – how about steel, corn and so forth and so on? And then what is he going to do – freeze prices to prevent inflation as “taxes” translate into “expenses?” All this is virtual bread and circuses to get elected.

What does it matter if prices become cheaper when Americans have no money at all? Free Trade funnels American jobs and American money overseas. It does not help America, it helps CEOs fatten their already fat pocketbooks.

The legislative probe has taken on new significance since Republican presidential candidate John McCain picked Palin as his running mate.

However, this does question how those
American companies can say they are
patriotic when they ship the jobs
overseas and don’t even pay taxes on
the merchandise. So how patriotic
are the Republicans who helped make
this happen?
Senator McCain does not care about the middle and lower classes…only the wealthy and the corporations. I wonder how they will keep our economy going when the American people don’t have jobs
and cannot afford to buy anything…
oh, wait…that is happening now!!!!

On the ABC Political home page under “Political Headlines” seven out of the nine topics have to do with Gov. Palin. Is it just me or is there something wrong with this picture? GOOD NEDWS FOR REPS!! Latest OHIO poll from U. of Cincinnati, among registered voters, puts McCain/Palin ticket ahead by five points. Definitely a MAJOR ANTI DEM BACKLASH FOR ALL THE TRASHING OF GOV. This is the second time today he has mocked McCain’s service. The idiot Obama ran an ad today regarding McCain’s inability to use a computer. The reason he doesn’t use one is because of his war injuries.
From the Boston Globe (March 4, 2000):
McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside: McCain’s severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes. Friends marvel at McCain’s encyclopedic knowledge of sports. He’s an avid fan – Ted Williams is his hero – but he can’t raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball.

USA Today ran an article on how Sarah Palin “governed from the center” and did not force social issues. McCain, along with Joe Lieberman (who would undoubtedly be in McCain’s cabinet), define the political center. If you want a centrist ticket, it’s McCain/Palin. If you want this country to go full-throttle, balls-to-the-wall extremist liberal, then vote Obama because he’s going to have a rubberstamp congress. Forget the campaign promises of both candidates. Look at the record of how McCain and Obama performed while in power and not pandering for votes. THAT is an accurate reflection of what their presidential policies would be.

So far only $100K was appropriated by a bipartisan vote.
And so far Palin has lied about her role in the firing as well her family and staffs role.
So far after initially saying she would fully cooperate, Palin has done everything in her power to stymie the investigation.
It would appear that she wants to delay the release of any investigative report until after the election, why is that?

I trust a black man like Obama to look after American workers more than McCain. Blacks are usually the last to be hired so they understand the need for job growth in America.
McCain has no interest in economics or trade. His policy is controlled by business elites who have no loyalty to this country. They are trying to reduce the living standard of the bottom 90% in this country so that we are living in huts, eating bowls of rice or curry.

The name Benedict Arnold, today, is regarded as the equivalent of a traitor. But, few people know that before Arnold went over to the British, he was one of the great HEROES of the American Revolutionary War.
The point of making this reference is to show that just because you acted like a patriot and heroically in the past, does not mean you will continue to do so in perpetuity.
While I don’t believe McCain is Benedict Arnold — I do think that he sold out his honor and integrity for his own personal ambitions a long time ago.
Based upon McCain’s behavior over the past few weeks, one can certainly question whether he is putting his country ahead of his personal ambition.

Obama sez: “so, when we hear John McCain talking about putting ‘Country First, it’s fair to ask –- which country?”
Tapper sez: (pansy-like, disguised as a question) “Obama questioned McCain’s patriotism.”
I say: “Yeah, well, someone better call that McCain guy out, and I’m glad Obama’s up for it. Calling ‘Buy American’ a disgrace sure is not MY definition of patriotism. (Must be Tapper’s.)

Austin Goolsby told the Canadians that Obama was bing tough on NAFTA during the campaign, but that he didn;t want to scrap the treaty.
Which prety much tracks with what Obama was saying pubclily. He;s for free trade and wants to renegotiate NAFTA not scrap it. But he would use the threat of unilateral withdrawl as a leverage to improve the treaty provisions.
Or…at least that’s what the pro Bush Canadian Gvt leaked to the press. Goolsby denies he told them that, and lord only knows what really happened.

This is supposed to be some kind of credible candidates campaign platform? Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchanan sum up the John McCain campaign platform pretty effectively:
BUCHANAN:Here’s a guy, basically, what does he say? The jobs are never coming back, the illegals are never going home, but we’re gonna have a lot more wars.
SCARBOROUGH: We’re gonna start a lot of wars! He has promised, for the record Keith, John McCain’s platform — and it certainly looks inviting for the fall — he has promised less jobs and more wars. Now that’s something we can all rally behind.

Welcome to the banking failures courtesy of republican’s free market failures. Welcome to the mortgage failures courtesy of the same free market hogwash.
Just because I don’t support corporatism (a fancy word for fascism) does not make me a socialist. But it is obvious where you are politically.

Obama needs to get a grip. He really sounds a bit hysterical lately. The issue here is free and fair competition in global markets. Is Obama advocating a legitimate debate on this issue or does he want to drag it into the mud like McCain did on Iraq policy? He can’t pretend that he stands for a new kind of politics and then practice the same old cynical game. If he does, he loses the one thing that justified his candidacy–because he certainly in not running on experience.

McCain lost the high ground on experience, national security and good judgment when he chose Sarah Palin as a running mate.
I don’t know what Sarah Palin might become in the future but at this point in time she has no business being 2nd to an old man who might die in office. Her lack of knowledge and experience and education in all these things make me come to the same conclusion as Obama – McCain will do anything to get elected even if it hurts this country. After 8 years of Bush 4 more years of this and I don’t know what will become of us. As we lose our middle class maybe they have a nice new social program called serfdom.

Why do the McCain people think they can get away with this stuff? Well, they’re probably counting on the common practice in the news media of being “balanced” at all costs. You know how it goes: If a politician says that black is white, the news report doesn’t say that he’s wrong, it reports that “some Democrats say” that he’s wrong. Or a grotesque lie from one side is paired with a trivial misstatement from the other, conveying the impression that both sides are equally dirty.
They’re probably also counting on the prevalence of horse-race reporting, so that instead of the story being “McCain campaign lies,” it becomes “Obama on defensive in face of attacks.”
Still, how upset should we be about the McCain campaign’s lies? I mean, politics ain’t beanbag, and all that.
One answer is that the muck being hurled by the McCain campaign is preventing a debate on real issues — on whether the country really wants, for example, to continue the economic policies of the last eight years.
But there’s another answer, which may be even more important: how a politician campaigns tells you a lot about how he or she would govern.
I’m not talking about the theory, often advanced as a defense of horse-race political reporting, that the skills needed to run a winning campaign are the same as those needed to run the country. The contrast between the Bush political team’s ruthless effectiveness and the heckuva job done by the Bush administration is living, breathing, bumbling, and, in the case of the emerging Interior Department scandal, coke-snorting and bed-hopping proof to the contrary.
I’m talking, instead, about the relationship between the character of a campaign and that of the administration that follows. Thus, the deceptive and dishonest 2000 Bush-Cheney campaign provided an all-too-revealing preview of things to come. In fact, my early suspicion that we were being misled about the threat from Iraq came from the way the political tactics being used to sell the war resembled the tactics that had earlier been used to sell the Bush tax cuts.
And now the team that hopes to form the next administration is running a campaign that makes Bush-Cheney 2000 look like something out of a civics class. What does that say about how that team would run the country?
What it says, I’d argue, is that the Obama campaign is wrong to suggest that a McCain-Palin administration would just be a continuation of Bush-Cheney. If the way John McCain and Sarah Palin are campaigning is any indication, it would be much, much worse.

McCain’s Opinion? It Depends On the Audience
At a live, televised forum on public service timed to coincide with the anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks, McCain said he respected Obama’s decision after law school to forgo a lucrative career path and become a community organizer in downtrodden Chicago.
“I respect people who serve their community,” McCain said. “And Senator Obama’s record there is outstanding.”
Let’s review: For more than a week, McCain’s running mate, at the Republican National Convention and at multiple events with McCain since then, has snidely declared that being a mayor was a lot like being a community organizer…except that a mayor has actual responsibilities. And while pandering to the faithful, John McCain laughs and applauds that insult to community organizers everywhere, but when appearing on a show that will be seen by millions of undecided voters, he suddenly thinks being a community organizer is honorable. Of course this only proves yet again what a dishonorable and dishonest man John McCain is.
For more than a week the traditional media has given Palin’s elitist dismissal of community organizers, with McCain smiling at her side, wide play. Will they now devote equal time and attention to John McCain’s hypocrisy?

The Commandment They Always Forget
It’s sad to be lectured constantly by the Republicans on morality. My marriage, for example, is a sin, according to Republicans. And if you squint hard enough somewhere in the Bible, you can find a couple of verses that will say so. But you don’t have to squint hard at all to see the Ten Commandments. And one of them is pretty clear:
Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness
What we are seeing from the pious denizens of the Christianist right – once again – is not just their susceptibility to breaking this commandment, but their zeal and enthusiasm in doing so. They are obsessed with the sex lives of others but see nothing wrong with breaking one of the most fundamental moral instructions in the Bible thenmselves. A reader writes:
Thou Shalt Not Lie.
Anyone? Dobson? Romney? Hewitt? Anyone? Larry Craig?
I’m seriously losing count of the transparent frauds on the “Right.” This whole Palin bump/fiasco is like one last glow of the Rove movement before it goes boom in the night.
The other thing that comes to mind is lemmings. You’re right. People need to chill, take a step back, forget about the polls for a second, and understand that there is a historic implosion taking place right now. History will look back kindly on the canaries in the conservative coal mine. Unfortunately, there don’t seem to be many.
Well, David Frum is quietly chirping. And Paul Mirengoff did too.

((Just ask the machinists in Pennsylvania who build Harley-Davidsons,” Obama said of McCain’s record. “Because John McCain didn’t just oppose the requirement that the government buy American-made motorcycles, he called Buy American provisions ‘disgraceful.’ Just ask the workers across this country who have seen their jobs outsourced. The very companies that shipped their jobs overseas have been rewarded with billions of dollars in tax breaks that John McCain supports and plans to continue.
“So, when American workers hear John McCain talking about putting ‘Country First,’” Obama said, “it’s fair to ask –- which country?”))
Ain’t odd, how quickly we forget,NAFTA was created by Bill Clinton. Who wanted the country to feel sorry for those poor people overseas who needed these jobs MORE THAN WE DID!!
Now look whose blaming the republicans for it! obama is flipping the script. What can you expect? Same tired ol mess.

I certainly enjoy reading leftist rhetoric. BO is right up your alley, the most leftist candidate in U.S. history, with the most liberal voting record in the Senate, who has voted left of the only socialist in the Senate. He promises to raise taxes on corporations and “the rich”, which of course won’t drive more businesses offshore. And 95% will get tax cuts, even with trillions in new spending. Right. The Empty Suit and Talkin’ Joe, gotta love it.

Obama doesn’t have a grade-school understanding of basic economics.
But then again most people in general don’t have a rudimentary understanding of economics either, as evidenced by the stunning ignorance on display in these comments.
Thankfully, you generally don’t have to understand how free trade creates wealth to benefit from it.

Either way that you vote in this currupt two party system you are simply voting for the lesser of “two evils.” The end result is that you’re still voting for evil.
Those that claim to be Republicans missed out on choosing the the best, second best and third best candidate: Paul, Romney and Hucklebee.
Im throwing my vote away to a third party candidate just like those that vote Republican or Democrat will throw their vote away. Things will never change under the current system!

New AP Poll shows people are not fooled…47% think Obama is not qualified to be President vs 36% for Sarah Palin…the more cheap shots like McCain cant use the Internet and doesn’t put America first Obama takes the more he will sink in the polls…
“Eighty percent say McCain, with nearly three decades in Congress, has the right experience to be president. Just 46 percent say Obama, now in his fourth year in the Senate, is experienced enough.
“Fully 47 percent say Obama lacks the proper experience — an even worse reading than the 36 percent who had the same criticism about McCain running mate Sarah Palin, serving her second year as Alaska governor after being a small-town mayor.

Oh, give me a break. Call it what you want, but he lines the pockets of his rich friends and business associates by the policies he supports. When everyone stops slobbering all over his VP selection, maybe they’ll remember the policies McCain supports and come to their senses. And the fact that he thinks the rich deserve bigger tax breaks than the poor. Not to mention sending their middle class jobs over seas and replacing them with lower paying jobs with less benefits. And then expects them to somehow pay for the education they need to accuire these lousy jobs.

I live in Everett, WA. right next to Boeing. That is exactly what McCain did with airbus and Boeing.
John McCain seems to be a lot different lately, and not the kind of different that he’s saying he is. All you have to do is google the records. 2008 voted with bush 100%, really! and in 2007 95%. But John McCain campaigns on change. Seriously. Not many people are happy with what bush has done to this country. How are we going to be happy with McCain? Honestly, I want to hear specific plans from the McCain campaign, or his supporters, so I can make an educated choice but I haven’t heard anything specific yet! and there’s only 7 weeks to go?
Library of congress. Media archive history. Quotes. It all shows double standards and double speak.
I would like someone to respond to the following.
Obama was behind legislation that was to provide kindergartners with tools that would help protect them against sexual predators, such as knowing the difference between appropriate and innapropriate touching. Do you guys know
how many children our molested in this country in one year? Too many.
Our duty is to do anything we can do to protect children. These aren’t Republican children or Democratic children, these are our children.
Why did John McCain, today on the view, defend his ad that said “the Democratic presidential candidate had supported “‘comprehensive sex education’ for kindergartners.” (The Wall Street Journal) and at the end of the ad it said “Learning about sex before learning to read?” The women on the view told him that was a lie, and he said it wasnt’. But it is? It’s deceiving because people are busy taking care of their families and don’t have time to do all the research. We shouldn’t be forced to dig so deep just to find the truth. It’s wearing us out as a country and not making us stronger.
Would you support legislation that says we will help protect our children against sexual predators? I think everyone could agree on that. Why is John McCain doing this? I don’t get it.
On a side note. Today John McCain criticized Obama for saying he would meet with Hugo Chavez. We get 40% of our oil from Venezuela. Think about all the 7-11′s we have. We are also their largest customer. Why wouldn’t we talk to them???? Huh?

So the Clinton administration created NAFTA. The Bush administration has had almost 8 years to tweak it and make it better for all Americans. But instead they’ve made it worse. Not to mention the poisonous, potentially deadly merchandise being forced on our children. And the drugs being brought in from China are practically placibos or worse. McCain supports those policies knowing full well what it’s doing to the average American. And where are all these jobs that are going to replace our manufacturing jobs?

McCain is lacking the mental clarity to govern our country competently. The Justice Department has been trashed. The Interior Department is racked in scandal. Energy policy has been written by oil companies for the past 8 years. We need new leadership who will put America first, not lobbyists. McCain is a puppet of the lobbyists who are running his campaign. Don’t be fooled by their negative ads. They can’t run on the issues because they are on the wrong side of the issues. McCain is on the wrong side when it comes to the things that matter most to middle class Americans.

Remember when Congress decided to stick to “the rich” by imposing a luxury tax on yachts? Well, big surprise here, “the rich” decided they could do without yachts for a while. And the yacht building industry was decimated. So, instead of the rich suffering, the workers lost their jobs. Now BO promises to do the same for the entire USA by sticking it to “the rich” and giving tax cuts to the other 95% of the population. Castro would be proud, if he were still alive. Anyone who votes for BO deserves what he/she gets.

McCain has repeatedly voted against veteran’s benefits, has lied incessantly on the campaign trail, hired the very same thugs that slimed him in 2000, and hired a multitude of lobbyists as his advisers while denigrating (incorrectly) his opponent’s insider status.

First, Joe Liberman has to endlessly correct McCain on war… Then he has to tutor the incompetent choice of Palin in the same. And to top it all off they are learning it all from the idiot neocon Joe Lieberman to begin with.

Seems pretty tame. And McCain is definitely fair game on foreign influence. Half his campaign team works for/has worked for/are still getting paid by foreign governments – Georgia, Macedonia, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, etc. There are even some who’ve worked for the vilest African dictators. So their corporate sell-outs – DHL, et. al – are minor in comparison.
Based on the lies and slanders McCain’s camp have made in this campaign it’s pretty clear that he would sell his wife into prostitution (or at least put her into a South Dakota wet-t-shirt contest) if would help his campaign.

Oh yeah, right, so let’s see, Teddy Roosevelt didn’t serve America first because he didn’t force the Federal government to support buggy whip manufacturers and gas-lighting installers in 1908, and instead said, gee, maybe we should move aggressively into the high-wage jobs of tomorrow, and not try shoveling back the tide.
Protection tariffs to delay the inevitable shifts in the economy are like using your credit card to pay the mortgage, instead of, you know, selling the house or getting another job. Plain stupid. And a President isn’t supposed to enable stupidity on the part of the whole nation to protect one small group of it. That’s not leadership, that’s total special-interest pandering. What’s Obama propose? Everyone gets special tariffs to protect his specialty? Just cut off international trade entirely, so no American job is ever threatened by competition from abroad? Go back to 18th century mercantilism?
And I thought this guy was educated and all.

All McCain \ Palin supporters have to ask is ” Are they members of the club ? ” – answer – “Yes” – all other inquiries irrelevant . It’s what you get when you have a tribal “Us and Them” – “If you are in the club you are the club” culture . Obama has to get them to make the effort to look below the surface . Obama shoule spend 3/4 + of his time concentrating on the voters and 1/4 – concentrating on McCain \ Palin . IE. don’t give them significance – build up a community Obama feel – “Let’s all get together” .

Obama is wrong on protectionism. I can understand why people don’t like Obama, or don’t agree with him on the issues. What I can’t understand, is why people support McCain. I thought Republicans were about family values and morality. Since when is adultery a family value? I thought Republicans were against elitism. McCain is way richer than Obama, and if he’s not elitist, then why does he want to cut taxes for the rich, and tax everyone else more than Obama? Plus, the man’s a liar. HOw many times has he said something and then three months later he denies it because that’s the party line now?
I also understand loyalty. Can’t we do better than that on morality?
I understand being loyal to your party. But my question is, what exactly would the Republicans have to do to lose your vote? They lied us into a war, wrecked the economy, and the lied about that too. They’ve polutted the environment, reduced our freedom, and our country is less secure, and more hated in the world.
Anyway, it’s your choice. I don’t really care, because my life will be fine no matter who gets elected. But some of you are worse off from the last 8 years. Some of you feel the burn of the gas prices (I don’t because I have a Prius, and gas money is peanuts to me). You can have another 4 if you want, but how many years of Republicans are you going to take? Does it stop with you or your children? How does it end? With the U.S.A. as poor as Mexico and China? Why?

The most alarming “notion” from this Nothingness, self claimed Zerobameus, who has done nothing in his adult life, is not simply question a hero’s patriotism, a hero who forght for his country and stayed in a POW cell for 5 years. The danger is his message of protectionism, nationalism, and ultimately socialism ideals. For God sake, this is still a free market economy, and Capitalism has made it the richest, fortunately still, country in the world. Zerobameus wants his government, using your money, to buy more expensive products, simply for the sake of “Made In America”.
Wheather or not a conservative or a libral, buying or not buying “Made In America” does not equate “patriotism”, just like the Clinton Administration is not the same as that of George W. Bush’s administration.
According to this phony Affirmative Action candi’s logic, 99.999% of Americans are unpatriotic because they certainly will find a thing or two Not Made In America.

I’m pretty sure we can ask Obama the same question….let’s take a look back and see when McCain left the country to campaign for AMERICAN presidency in Germany or France?? Didn’t find it…that’s right you need Obama’s books to find out of the country trips on government money and donations from supporters for personal gain. Strong words from Senator “Citizen of the World” Obama. All of a sudden he’s developed such a love for those bitter people who still cling to guns and God—because they’re by and large going to vote for McCain and Palin. And return Mr Obama to the trash heap of history.

McCain’s tenure as a POW doesn’t exonerate him from anything that comes out of his mouth.
His lies and distortions will catch up to him. I don’t see him as a patriot in my book. Not anymore. He sold his soul trying to win this election. He should just retire gracefully. People don’t want a greedy, whiny old man as president.

Yeah, Obama has always said that he got his tuition money for Harvard from student loans. Now it has been revealed that not only did Saudi and Panther advisor, Khalid al-Monsour, pull strings to get Obama into Harvard, but but also paid for at least some of his tuition. ANOTHER PIECE OF BAD BAGGAGE FOR OBAMA?? BAGGAGE IS GETTING HEAVIER!!

Kim,
“All McCain \ Palin supporters have to ask is ” Are they members of the club ? ” – answer – “Yes” – all other inquiries irrelevant . It’s what you get when you have a tribal “Us and Them” – “If you are in the club you are the club” culture . Obama has to get them to make the effort to look below the surface . Obama shoule spend 3/4 + of his time concentrating on the voters and 1/4 – concentrating on McCain \ Palin . IE. don’t give them significance – build up a community Obama feel”
Thank you. That makes a lot of sense. Republicans need to feel like they are a part of the club (sheeple) and they don’t care what lies they have to overlook to get their “in” pass. Pitiful lot they are.

Actually you are wrong on the dictionary definition. Patriotism is loving your country. It does not preclude loving other countries, and it is not nationalism, excessive love of your country to the preclusion of other countries. So as long as someone loves America, their love or priorities in reference to the rest of the world is irrelevant to that. Of course the connotation of the word WOULD indicate that someone who puts another country first is treasonous.

So let me ask you, when you kids come to you and say they want to smoke marijuana or snort cocaine and they point out that President Obama did that so it is OK, that would be different how?
YOU are the parent, act like it. Your kids do not get to do something just because others do. YOU set the standards as parents. Use the examples of Palin and Obama as people who have worked through poor choices but teach YOUR kids how to avoid poor choices.
No person is perfect and if you use this standard, no one can be president.

Didn’t Obama’s staff reassure Canada that all of this talk about NAFTA and Fair Trade..was just that Talk? What has Obama exactly done for his short time in the Senate regarding trade? What did he do for the Maytag plant in his own state? He certainly isn’t a Sherod Brown from Ohio or even Hillary Clinton who states it needs to be fixed. I am under the impression that no matter who gets elected..K Street and Wall Street get their man.
The issue isn’t the corporate tax rate per se..it is getting companies to pay their taxes in the first place. To simply increase the rate overburdens those companies that actually pay their taxes. The best bet would be to close the loop holes and then lower the tax rate so everyone pays their fair share.

You got to be joking, I am starting to think Obama thinks McCain is Obama.
Obama goes to Europe puts down this country, says our troops are air raiding villages, has yet to call our enemy what they are, but says McCain is putting other countries first.
If someone talked on the street as Obama does he would be put in a mental institution!
Posted by: spock | September 13, 2008, 12:45 pm 12:45 pm
You can interpret this as Obama attacking McCain’s patriotism, but really its an attack on McCain’s trade/economic policies. Obama is attacking free trade and trying to make protectionism sound patriotic. It’s also another example of Obama’s willingness to spend more of taxpayer’s money (paying more for products and services) and take credit for creating jobs. But all he’s doing is taking money from US corporations and citizens (preventing them from creating jobs) giving this revenue to another company ensuring that company will become less competitive and more dependent on government hand-outs, and taking credit for credit creating/saving jobs with no actual net increase of jobs or wealth.
Obama’s claims that he’s only taxing the rich do not wash since corporations simply pass on increased costs to their customers. Make no mistake, the average American would pay more for products and services under Obama.
Instead of acting indignant about Obama’s attack on McCain’s patriotism, McCain’s camp should instead point out that Obama’s comments are a lame attempt to make socialism look like patriotism.

McCain is going to be like President Ulysses Grant. The one-time military hero who conquered the south. Once elected Grant faded mentally and descended into alcoholism. Big business interests controlled and looted the government. This will happen again with McCain.
Most of the pro-McCain posts here are made by people hired by big business to promote internationalism and to get him elected at any cost. He will be a puppet of multi-nationals. The Trilateral Commission wants John McCain, former Mexican President Vicente Fox wants McCain. Open the borders to illegal immigration, offshore everything. When everyone is dead broke, then the top 1% can usurp the Constitution.

Jesus was a community organizer,
Thanks for the snarky remarks. Now let me ask you this, how many swing votes does Barack hope to capture by questioning McCain’s patriotism? He’s not helping himself at all with these comments.
BTW, Jesus was most certainly not a community organizer. He was concerned with saving souls, not seeking additional funding for Head Start. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, just please don’t try to equate the two. On second thought, go right ahead. That’s another catch phrase that’s driving people away from Obama. Likening Obama to Jesus, there’s a winning strategy.

As for questioning McCain’s patriotism, why the hell not? This is not snark. McCain has consciously selected someone with separatist tendencies to be his Vice President! Seriously, this doesn’t bother you all? Why not? I confess, I am terrified of losing Alaska to Canada, or god forbid, Russia.

1. Obama talked a lot of baloney about NAFTA.
2. Obama’s economic advisor Goolsbee gave secret assurances to Canada that Obama’s NAFTA speech was just a bunch of campaign baloney.
3. Obama lied about Goolsbee when he got caught.
4. Then Obama admitted he was tallking a bunch of campaign baloney about NAFTA all along.

If Senator Obama has his way, he will tax employers out of business. What will that do to the employment situation in this country? Senator McCain wants to implement programs that will help increase employment. That way, the American people can pay for their own mortgages and health care. Obama’s plan depends on the government to pay! He will, however, be using our tax money to do so! And, if Obama starts questioning Senator McCain’s loyalty to this country, he will be in for a long two months!

Where is discussion on the National-International Issues? Palin is not the issue!
Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate, is a beautiful lady. What else can you tell me about her? Is she qualified to be the President of the United States?
In contrast to many very highly qualified Republican ladies, such as Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Sarah Palin has equivalent high school knowledge in some fields, and not at all in the others. In 1984, Palin won the Miss Wasilla Pageant, then finished third (second runner-up) in the Miss Alaska pageant, at which she won a college scholarship and the “Miss Congeniality” award. Palin admits to trying cannabis as a youth, during the time Alaska had decriminalized possession though she says she did not enjoy it.
Palin spent her first college semester at Hawaii Pacific College, transferring in 1983 to North Idaho College and then to the University of Idaho. She attended Matanuska-Susitna College in Alaska for one term, returning to the University of Idaho to complete her Bachelor of Science degree in communications-journalism, graduating in 1987.
Did Senator McCain think choosing a family advocating separation of Alaska from the United States would buy my vote?
I am disappointed with Sen. John McCain’s selection; he chose such a feather weight person to represent the Republican Party. Did he think that American women would vote for him because he selected a female rather than a male for the ticket? Senator McCain, please stop insulting the American women?
As you have stated yourself, you had voted 95% of the times in the Senate along the President Bush’s policies. Senator McCain, the issues during this election are: job, economy, medical insurance, infrastructure, education, and failed policy of the President Bush. As President Ronald Reagan once stated: Are we better now than 4 years ago? No, my family is worse than 8 years ago.
Should I vote for Bush-McCain policies once more? Tell me why I should!
Sarah Palin is not the issue nor is Paris Hilton.

This election is turning into a riot. The One is becoming The Losing One and he doesn’t know how to cope. Putting country first does not mean buying overpriced and/or shoddy goods. If we create a monopolized ‘buy local’ type economy, we’ll soon find that our purchasing power is minimal because the costs of production have been ridiculously elevated by unions which have demanded and got all manner of idiotic perks. Since businesses have been unable to keep on paying the fiscal costs of union idiocy, many have failed because of that and poor management.
If Obama doesn’t understand the true meaning of putting country first (country before self, not overpriced union-products before self) what in Sam Hill does he understand?
Based on the powerful ignorance he displays on a frequent basis, I’d say not much.

To Obama the word change is just a campaign slogan, whereas McCain and Palin have actually brought about substantive changes in government. Changes which have helped Americans, while Obama has spent his career just talking about it. Obama has spent most of his time in public office absent from his responsibilities, while ambitiously running for the next rung in the ladder, not to serve the people, but rather to further his own position. And, I’m sure most people could relate to McCain and Palin as fellow Americans, more than they can to the Obamas, who chose to spend TWENTY YEARS in the radical
anti-American racist church of Jeremiah Wright … and chose unsavory associates, such as Farrakhan, Pfleger, Rezko, Ayers, etc.. As for Obama’s phony indignation about being a community organizer … Palin never criticized those efforts, she merely, and rightfully questioned it as being the sole experience and credentials for someone to use as qualifications to become President of the United States … and, even then, it was in response to Obama’s attacks at Palin for being the mayor of a small town, when he also neglected to mention that she was Governor as well.

Obama has now torpedoed his main appeal beyond the antiwar base: That he would lead a post-partisan campaign (and administration) that would bring a different tone to politics.
Now the gutter politics of the Obama campaign has exceeded anything that Karl Rove ever did for the Republicans. Going after Sarah Palin’s baby, Trig, was the absolute bottom–implying she should have had him aborted.
While Obama “netroots” supporters ADMIT that all Obama is doing with his own personal disclaimers of this filth is trying to maintain plausible deniability, rather than actually putting a stop to it. Ugliest stuff I’ve ever seen in any political campaign, ever.
Take away the Iraq War, take away the cool post-partisan appeal, and what you have left is an angry black partisan candidate. Obama isn’t going to win this election by channeling Al Sharpton.

Obama is questioning McCain’s patriotism. Just like McCain went after Obama’s strength by stealing the “change” theme, Obama is going after McCain’s flank. Obama knows full well the media is going to protect him.
Obama is trying to get McCain to flash that notorious McCain temper and reveal McCain to be “dangerous” and can’t be trusted with his finger on the button. This is calculated. It’s Obama’s best shot. I hope he fails miserably.

Obama has shown that he puts himself first. One example is OBAMA’S SCANDAL in which he personally benefited from a land transaction involving an indicted developer, Rezko. Rezko was indicted for seeking political kickbacks and for shaking someone down for a contribution for the Illinois Governor. Rezko bought a parcel of property that Obama wanted, but could not afford. Then Rezko sold the property on the same day he purchased it to Obama for well under the price he paid for it. I wonder what kind of political favors he got from Obama as a result of the deal and the over $60,000 he had donated to Obama over the years…

Navy vet, Jeremiah Wright was a Marine. Whatever his faults may be, his patriotism is not in question.
Now ask yourself this — who are you serving, Sir? The Republican Party or the United States of America? John McCain has made it very clear that he cares more about the party than the country, slogans notwithstanding. Why would he put an inexperienced and corrupt ignoramus with secessionist tendencies one stopped heartbeat away from the Presidency?
