Obama Inflates Role in Creation of Stimulus Package

In Golden, Colo., today, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., took credit for the stimulus package that passed earlier this year.

"In January, I outlined a plan to help revive our faltering economy," Obama said, "which formed the basis for a bipartisan stimulus package that passed the Congress."

Is that true?

Democrats on Capitol Hill who support Obama say no.

Wanting Obama to win, however, none will say so on the record.

But media accounts from the time make it clear that even though Obama, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., all offered legislation to provide stimulus to the economy, congressional leaders looped them and their legislation out of negotiations.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson worked with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kent.

"Pelosi and Reid seemed to be ignoring the detailed policy solutions being put out by her party’s White House hopefuls," wrote the Washington Post on January 23.

"Among Reid’s toughest tasks will be keeping Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., and Barack Obama, D-Ill. who are on the campaign trail touting proposals laden with ideas Republicans detest sidelined in the talks while Democrats seek broader agreement with the GOP," wrote the Associated Press the same day.

The bill passed 81-16 on February 7, 2008.

The Obama campaign argues that in January 2008, Obama "was the only candidate to propose a fiscal stimulus plan centered on tax rebate checks for the broad majority of Americans. The bipartisan bill that passed less than a month later was centered on rebate checks to the broad middle class along the lines of what Obama proposed."

That is true.

Obama proposed a tax rebate aimed at middle class families. Clinton’s approach, conversely, focused on specific programs targeted at individuak problems, such as home-heating and mortgage subsidies.

But though the bill that eventually passed more closely resembled Obama’s than either Clinton’s or McCain’s, those involved in the drafting of the legislation say it was more a matter of agreeing on a good idea and was not a matter of, as Obama claimed, his proposal having "formed the basis for a bipartisan stimulus package that passed the Congress."

In Vienna, Ohio, this afternoon, McCain said that Obama today "claimed that the Congressional stimulus package was his idea. That’s news to those of us in Congress who supported it. Senator Obama didn’t even show up to vote."

That’s true. (McCain was there, and he voted for it.)

Moreover, Obama today was guilty of inflating his role in the creation of that bill.

This does not look good for Obama especially after he doctored the interview with Carly Fiorina (sp). Seems like he has no problem distorting the truth. Not good for a candidate who was going to be different.

The New York Times reported this five years ago:
The Bush administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago.
!!!!”These two entities — Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — are not facing any kind of financial crisis,” said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee.

“That’s true. (McCain was there, and he voted for it.)”
That in itself is newsworthy given how many votes McCain missed.
Obama is wrong on to claim credit on this but I did notice this

Reminds me of this comment from Sen. Obama during his visit to Israel (July 2008): “Just this past week, we passed out of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee – which is my committee – a bill to call for divestment from Iran as way of ratcheting up the pressure to ensure that they don’t obtain a nuclear weapon.”
Senator Obama isn’t a member of the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs.

That’s some adept hair splitting their Jake. Is this the perfunctory, “balanced coverage” post? The inaccuracte story that helps “counterbalance” all of that factual “liberal bias”?
You should recall that this was an issue in the Democratic campaign and the fact that Obama’s plan ended up being the most effective politically viable option available was testament to his ability to push forward his agenda and his bipartisanship credentials. Shouldn’t he get credit for having forseen that, or did he have to invent new powers that allowed him to brute force determine what the legislation was going to be (i.e. through his ‘leadership’ get the entire Democratic caucus to heave Hillary overboard and embrace his candidacy)? In any case, isn’t it obvious that his profile having put it out there influenced the debate?

Excuse me one second please…
I am really confused: Where is the over-inflation? Jake you made an observation and then you talked some more and then finally went back to your original observation. I just don’t see where your evidence for the ‘overinflation’ is. So you agree that the bill that passed closely resembles the one that Obama proposed in the primary? So who should claim credit for the idea? What is going on here? Obama didn’t hear read the bill and propose the idea, right? He proposed the idea and then the bill came along, right? Am I missing something crucial here? So where did he get the idea from? was someone already talking about it and Obama just picked it from somewhere? Until I hear something to indicate that the idea (rebate-focused package) originated someone other than his campaign, i am really willing to give him credit for this and I think people should too!
p.s. i remember all the proposed packages from the trail and have honestly been wondering why nobody has pointed out that the bill that passed resembled Obama’s more than any other candidate. Again, i think he is right to claim the credit where it is due. I think it is a shame to try to deny that.

Obama has only beeen there 2 years, John McCain received 20K; Hilary 87K. The truth is just something that gets in Obama’s way. Joe Biden, wasn’t he the Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee. “And what about the death taxes?”
The estate tax was originally instituted by Teddy Roosevelt who saw it as a bulwark against American aristocracy.
Obama proposes freezing the estate tax at 2009 levels: a 45% tax rate on estates valued at more than $3.5 million. Married couples can combine their exemptions for a total of $7 million.
“By exempting all estates under $7 million, Obama’s plan will shield all but about 100 estates with small business income from any estate taxation,” said Obama campaign spokesman Nick Shapiro, citing the Congressional Budget Office’s 2005 study on the estate tax and further analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. “Senator Obama’s plan would completely exempt 99.7% of estates from taxation.”

Proof McCain truly is a Teddy Roosevelt sort of candidate . . .

McCain has long identified Roosevelt, president from 1901 to 1909, as a political idol.
But Palin says McCain- Palin will keep the “death tax” eliminated.
“How did we get the death tax?”
The estate tax was originally instituted by Teddy Roosevelt who saw it as a bulwark against American aristocracy.

Even Democrats will not support Obama claims that he helped outline a plan to revive the economy.
And, if Obama had this miraculous plan that he is now touting, why did he not work hard enough (with a Democrat majority in both houses) to see that this “pie in the sky” plan was passed and implemented.
As the Obama attacks increase in number and audacity, we must also look back to the claims by Obama that he would run a positive campaign.
Obama is becoming increasingly more like a stand-up comedian performing in a crowd that is not laughing at his pathetic, negative one-liners.
The desperation of the Obama campaign continues to grow while the candidate Obama continues to hit new lows.

Broadcast television could create a week long mini-series on all of the things Obama has taken credit for which he had absolutely nothing to do with.
There is something seriously wrong with someone who consistently boasts of doing things and being involved in things which he has absolutely no involvement with.
This should really set alarm bells off in any rational person’s head.
Obama is really a parody of John Lovitz’ pathological liar character from Saturday Night Live.
Isn’t it about time that the media finally does an investigative expose on the dozens and dozens of things Obama has claimed credit for, which he really had little or no involvement with?

The Obama campaign argues that in January 2008, Obama “was the only candidate to propose a fiscal stimulus plan centered on tax rebate checks for the broad majority of Americans. The bipartisan bill that passed less than a month later was centered on rebate checks to the broad middle class along the lines of what Obama proposed.”

What we must understand is leaders don’t have all the ideas or all the answers. What leaders provide is a vision. The people on his/her team bring the vision into being. Which one of these candidates has a vision for America. Which one can take us into the future. It’s only one and that’s Obama.

You voted on personality the last two times. Someone you could have a beer with. Someone you could relate to and do you see where that has gotten us? Not again…please. Our country can’t afford four more years of a President who rules by gut instinct. Someone who thinks he can read someone’s soul by looking in their eyes. We need someone who actually thinks and analyzes. Someone who respects the brightest and smartest for their ideas and thoughts. I don’t want a man who does not respect the ideas of others, who thinks he knows it all already or the hocky mom running the country.

“How did we get the death tax?”
The estate tax was originally instituted by Teddy Roosevelt who saw it as a bulwark against American aristocracy.

O.K….so the stimulus package ended up with something akin to his one month earlier proposal, but claims to have arrived there via a different route: so he would have been completely right on to have said: “In January, I outlined a plan to help revive our faltering economy,” Obama said, “the basis of which was tax relief proposal that became the bipartisan stimulus package that passed the Congress.” I’m sure that the GOP considers this hair-splitting mistake equivalent to McCain’s whoppers used to falsely accuse Obama of putting his ambition above the country’s interest, or calling Palin a pig, or sex ed for babies. Me thinks Tapper has gotten himself in the game too, with the notion of “equivalence”: i.e., that if one campaign lies to high heaven and you expose it, you have to do a similar expose’ on the other candidate the next day just to show you’re fair. This is a common logical fallacy but it leads to a very real error in thought: i.e., that they’re all lying equally—which just ain’t so.

The stimulus package did nothing to the economy as it continuously slide down, as His Nothingness even realized. The origin of these problems are very specific, as evidenced by the government bail outs of major banks and investment firms as we are speaking. If Congress, Plosi and Reid and company, had the courage and followed HRC’s idea of targeted economic stimulus to solve the real problems, the situation would have been much better off. Nobody can tell, at this point, if it would have solved the problem, but the infusion of the amount of money given to a few people into those targeted areas certainly would have helped preventing these huge government bail outs.
If this stimulus was an idea that His Nothingness wanted, it has proven to be bogus and wrong. In fact, it has worsened the economy, leading to even greater costs to the Federal government of the two huge bail outs.
Market economy is not to be micro-managed by the government, or Presidential candidates bribing voters and promising to give them $1000 more if they elect him.

The final two lobbyists are McCain’s congressional liaison, John Green, and national finance Co-chairman Wayne Berman. They both lobbied for Fannie Mae, the troubled mortgage giant.

The savings and loan fiasco under George Bush’s daddy cost americans billions. Enron, and Worldcom cost american billions. Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers and AIG is costing americans billions. NOTICE THAT YOU DON’T SEE THE POLL NUMBERS FROM THE REPBUBS TODAY
The “big lead” they were bragging about is gone. It’s still tied, but polls are going in the right direction!
One reason is that Palin’s numbers are falling fast. Her approval rating has dropped 10 points, and her disapproval rate is up.
Over-hyped celebrities that rise to stardom too fast – crash back to earth even faster. Now that America is learning about McCain’s VP choice and her frightening lack of knowledge, her 15 minutes will soon be over.

I have been disgusted with the media lately. ABC News has been beyond despicable. Anyone with a brain can clearly see the “qualified” ticket. There’s only “one” person that has fought for our freedom, served us in our government for decades and has experience. Everyone is focusing on Palin because there’s not much to criticize about an injured war hero that has served his country in countless ways. Has Obama ever “fought” and “sacrificed” his life for the country that he first visited at age 11 (his Disneyland trip)?

Posted by: amicro84 | September 16, 2008, 9:42 pm 9:42 pm

McCain has a proven record of cutting wasteful spending. He has not asked fore earmarks while Obama has in his short time in the senate received over a billion! Now, please…..who do you think would be the best steward of the American economy? I’ll take the guy who has a proven record of doing the best he can to stop wasteful spending and keeping taxes low. Obama wouldn’t know the truth if it hit him in the face. Maybe that’s why he couldn’t figure out for 20 years he should stop listening to Rev. Wright. It all boils down to judgment…..on moral issues and economical issues …. who do you trust? I simply trust McCain over Obama.

I don’t see the discrepancy, Jake. I know you are trying to do a balanced job. Bottom-line, Obama came up with a plan which was very similar to what congress approved. who cares whether they chose it because they agreed with it or because they thought it was Obama’s?

Mike, please show us how McCain has cut wasteful spending. Mind you, not all earmarks are bad. Earmarks hidden into bills being passed are bad. All of Obama’s earmarks whether passed or not are transparent. You can find them easily just by Googling. He helped to pass a law to make earmarks transparent. Ask McCain about making lobbying transparent.

I also have a thing for dirty air, I really think it’s more important that Corporate America be able to pollute the air as much as they want & if your babies get asthma because of it you should just shut up & not whine. I also think it is soooo much more important for the wealthy to get tax breaks, if I’m lucky that will trickle down on me, I guess that is known as bottom feeding, but I just don’t care. Ronald Reagan continually said the measure is are you better off than you were 4years ago, well, 90% of us are worse off due to the Repuke policies, but hey, we have God on our side! Liz-
1. Let’s start with Obama’s “economic justice”-a plan where rich people pay more in taxes to support poor people.
(keeping in mind that 38% of americans pay NO TAXES at all). That, Liz, is the very definition of socialism, i.e., taking from the rich, to give to the poor because it’s “fair” in liberal land.
That would be a reason to vote for McCain.
2. Common sense plan to drill for domestic oil. Despite the left’s frenzy over this, who vastly prefer oil is extracted from third world countries with no environmental regulations at all, it will create millions of jobs, and the tax revenue alone would wipe out our federal deficit. (Exxon alone pays $4000 a second in fed. taxes!!)
Including oil shale, which the Canadians are already gearing up to recover, we’ve got 100 years worth of domestic oil, right here.
As McCain says, we need this oil while new technologies come on line.
I love the confused look you get from people when it’s pointed out that oil spikes on the threat of a hurricane, so why wouldn’t adding more platforms lower prices?

Posted by: hippie_chucker | September 16, 2008, 10:28 pm 10:28 pm

will isn’rt is funny that this is their attempt to get a really negative story that is actually news on Obama
because it’s hard to call this even news while the other two are clearly cracking because they have no idea about the economy or foreign policy (well, Mccain is just wrong on foreign policy
which brings up the news from Iraq and why we see now we will not know if the surge was a success for decades…as we are seeing the surge is now backfiring from all that money and guns and false promises we made to the sons of iraq and the iraqi awakening militants …that are now being arrested that we promised guns and money and positions to…
now where was it that we gave money and guns and power to muslim insurgents before to get a political quieting of a conflict… … oh that is right Afghanistan in the 80′s…
reagan’s freedom fighters…
and what happened to those guys anyway?
oh that’s right they changed their names
to
the taliban, al qaeda and Osama bin Laden…
and flew two massive planes into our twin towers…
John Mccain was right on the surge if we stuck with his original plan… which called for us to stay there for a hundred years.
how’s that war bill looking with that.
you want to know why we can not call the surge a success for decades…well these are the signs of why we may have wasted billions and lives on that surge…
if it goes down…it could go down BAD.

Liz, That was sarcasm. I know that McCains plan will result in fewer people w/ insurance & those that have insurance will pay more. Don’t forget that w/ McCains plan if you have employer based insurance you will be charged tax on it, typical Repuke sleaze, they usually raise your taxes, but try to hide how they do it. The only arguement that I’ve heard for not making sure that everyone has insurance is that “we’ll have to wait longer to see a doctor”. Really!!! So you want to let people die because they cant afford to go because you might be inconvenieced? I guess that my sarcasm was too close to the actual reality of the Repuke train of thought. Our dependence on foreign oil is getting us into wars we have no business fighting. Regarding drilling, we don’t have the oil to sustain us. Our oil is not the same as the Middle East. And are you forgetting the enviornment? If we don’t do something now to sustain our enviornment we might not last long enough to worry about all of the above.

JOHN McCAIN LIED when he says that he NEVER got an earmark – BIG LIE!!
* McCain in 2006 co-sponsored legislation that asked for $10-million for an academic center at the University of Arizona)
* In 2003, John McCain won authorization to buy property to create a buffer zone around Luke Air Force Base in Arizona)
* In 1992, McCain asked the Environmental Protection Agency to provide $5 million toward a wastewater project in Nogales, Ariz.
- JOHN McCAIN also LIED when he said that this at a town hall meeting: “I have a perfect voting record from organizations like the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and all the other veterans service organizations.” — The FACT IS THIS:
* The Disabled American Veterans — gave McCain only a 20 percent grade in its 2007 voting scorecard.
* Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America says McCain only voted veterans’ way on 58 percent of the 155 Senate votes.
* Vietnam Veterans of America reports that McCain has voted against 15 of 31 priority bills it tracked between 2001 and 2008.
- JOHN McCAIN also LIES when he says that obama will raise taxes on small businesses– HE WILL NOT, Obama will cut taxes on small business, and John McCain knows this, he has been corrected by the media, BUT John McCain still keeps lying, and lying, and lying!!
- Sarah Palin DID NOT say no thank you to Bridge to Nowhere!“ — Sarah Palin actually campaigned for Governor telling Alaska that she WOULD build the bridge. Sarah also got the money from the federal government to build the bridge! And even when the bridge was not build, Sarah still KEPT ALL THE MONEY, all of the earmark she had received from the government!!! — Sarah is still lying about saying she was against the bridge — LYING about it every single day on the campaign trail.
- Sarah ALSO claims she did not receive any earmarks! — Sarah Palin is still lying about that too, She asked for and received $ 197 million dollars in earmarks THIS YEAR ALONE!!
- Sarah says that Alaska is responsible for providing 35% of the America’s oil supply — LIE!!! Alaska ONLY provides 3% (three%) of the US oil supply.
THE REAL LIARS, who have lied over, and over, and over, ARE JOHN MCCAIN, AND SARAH PALIN — A WOMAN WHO IS RIGHT NOW UNDER ETHICS INVESTIGATION, AND WHO WILL NOT EVEN PARTICIPATE IN THE ETHICS INVESTIGATION, INVOLVING HER GOING ON IN ALASKA!!

I’d follow up by saying that Obama’s plan to raise government spending by $864 BILLION, paid for by new taxes that affect us all, would be a major reason to vote for McCain. You only need to look to California, with its massive entitlements (with a bigger GDP than many European countries!) to see how an Obama presidency would look like-massive new deficits, and corresponding incredibly high taxes.

Of course I realize oil is on a global market. You missed my only two points-jobs, and tax revenue from oil sales.
In terms of the environment-the most liberal European countries, who have actual Green party legislators, drill for domestic oil offshore. We are the ONLY country in the WORLD that denies itself its own resources. Oil drilling technology is very advanced, witnessed by the zero accidents from Katrina/Ike, etc.
There are 7000 gallons of oil seeping up from the ocean floor every day around the continental US…where’s the outrage?

According to Bush if we started drilling in Alaska now, it would be 10 years before we saw any improvement at the pumps. Really? So we could choose to opt for clean air & water, creating an alternative for oil, or we could just drift along doing our best to give more tax breaks to big oil so they can get richer! The technology is available, alternatives are available, all we have to do is invest. If we do, the wealth will spread, but wouldn’t it be better if we just let the oil companies milk us dry!

“You only need to look to California, with its massive entitlements (with a bigger GDP than many European countries!) to see how an Obama presidency would look like-massive new deficits, and corresponding incredibly high taxes.”
CA has its problems.
But property taxes in CA are among the lowest rates in the country(thanks to prop 13).
Because of that local government are stretched to the breaking point with most budgets including funding for schools, fire & police.
CA does not have “massive entitlements”.

McCAIN plans to: Leave minimum wage at $7.25 an hour, which is where current law will take it to by 2009.
OBAMA plans to: Raise minimum wage to $9.50 an hour by 2011.
So who really cares about the middle class, it is NOT the guy with 7 HOUSES

I want to see America turned into a third world country and I want to see corporate America get even richer. I want to see more children without health insurance and I can’t think of a better person to vote for!

Liz,
I’m not sure what your point is. How are “we” bailing out rich people? Any conservative believes in the free market, and are against gov’t bailouts, period.
Where were you when your house doubled in value a couple years ago? Blaming Republicans, right?
Barney Frank and Chris Dodd set the wheels in motion to relax credit standards at Mac and May, partially leading us down this spiral, but I think there is plenty of blame to go around on both parties.

“Of course I realize oil is on a global market. You missed my only two points-jobs, and tax revenue from oil sales.”
There’s not a good enough return on our selling away our natural resources only to not have a dependable domestic source for oil.
“In terms of the environment-the most liberal European countries, who have actual Green party legislators, drill for domestic oil offshore. We are the ONLY country in the WORLD that denies itself its own resources.”
They also have state oil companies that control that oil vs what we have which is no control beyond our Strategic reserve.
Now if you want to call for the creation of a national oil company that controls oil in this country…then we can talk about domestic supply of oil.

Dave,
As far as minimum wages go-raising the minimum wage, now this is proven fact, leads to a net loss of jobs. Businesses that employ minimum wage workers simply cannot afford to hire employees at the new rate.
I know that sounds heartless, but it is true-the unemployment numbers always jump after a minimum wage spike.
Obama’s pegging min. wage to inflation will only cut more jobs, unfortunately. It’s simply pandering.

Dave – I do not know many middle class families where the breadwinners are making $7.50 or even $9.50 an hour. Minimum wage is a political football – raising the minimum wage has very little to do with helping very many Americans but political parties love to say they raised the minumum wage as a point of propaganda.

it doesn’t take away the fact that Obama has also. So for every list you can come up with about McCain the other side can come up with one about Obama.

What if the rich decide to sit on their money and not invest; How many people will lose their jobs. Imagine right now, under Obama tax plan if you make $605K, you actually take home less than the person who make $570K. What kind of tax plan is that.

Tom – if you think that Bush taking office from Clinton is the reason gas prices are high then you have been asleep for the last several decades. This started when Carter was in office – no administration or Congress has done a thing for our energy crisis since the 1970′s. It has now finally caught up to us – Bush has about as much control of gas prices as he does the tea in China. You might want to consider supply and demand, speculation, and a powerful group called OPEC, along with other oil producing countries with nationalized oil companies. The US oil companies do not even control 6% of all the oil in the world. We are hostage to other nations and caused it ourselves over the last 40 years. And – Obama is the one who said he did not mind $4 gallon gas, he just wished it would not have happened so quickly – so he must have known this was coming as well.

Ryan,
So following your logic, it’s just not worth drilling here at all…and we should just give up the millions of barrels a day we’re doing? Lay off thousands of people, throw away BILLIONS in existing tax revenue?
If it makes sense to continue, which obviously it does, it makes further sense to increase what we’re doing, right?
The fact that state run petro companies don’t have accidents in Europe applies to here in that we’d be using the same technology.
As far as drilling, it’s important to remember that the stone age didn’t end because of a lack of rocks-in much the same way as eventually a new fuel source will come online, but only when it’s cheaper than oil…and nationalizing an industry will guarantee that such innovation won’t take place, as it removes the only mechanism for change-the free market.
Getting upset at oil makes about as much sense as being angry with apples. Both are short lived commodities that will eventually be replaced…

Please people. McCain is also distorting the truth. “Palin opposed the bridge to nowhere” Really?? Even after official documentation shows she was originally for it?? “McCain is a Maverick” Really?? When he is quoted saying he’s voted with Bush about 90% of the time? This is not news bias, these are concrete facts. Don’t act like Obama is fudging some facts and John McCain is not. So they are both distorting information. Great. Think about this. I keep hearing how the Democrats will increase government spending and raise taxes, blah, blah, blah. Truth be told, some taxes are going to HAVE to be raised in order to get us out of our deficit. McCain’s claims of reducing government spending just won’t cut it. He’ll have to raise taxes too if he is to balance a budget. So spare me. Both will have to raise taxes in some capacity. And I don’t see McCain reducing spending if we are still going to be in Iraq for years to come.

Tom,
Consider that there also weren’t billions of suddenly middle class Chinese and Indian families who could afford to buy their first car when Bush took office..
Try to think about what a billion people who suddenly need gasoline would do to the price at the pump. Since supply=demand, prices rise dramatically, right?
Out of every dollar, Evil Big Oil makes a whopping 7 cents. Government takes 14 cents in taxes.
Private companies only extract 5% of the worlds oil, and that would include the lefts biggest target, Exxon.
The rest is extracted by state run monopolies, and OPEC.
So who has a bigger say on how much a barrel is worth?

Posted by: hippie_chucker | September 16, 2008, 11:20 pm 11:20 pm

“So following your logic, it’s just not worth drilling here at all”
No I am saying it is not worth drilling if we give away a limited natural resource.
Natural Gas is plentiful in this country.
Massive investment in alternative energies combined with American work ethic and technological expertise could make America the center of alternative energy and a powerhouse.
Selling oil leases to multinational companies doesn’t solve anything.

Everyone who is against the Iraq war….do you think we shouldn’t have helped Germany when they were in trouble during WWII? Should Hitler just have continued killing millions of Jews? I don’t care what anyone says about George Bush, this world is a BETTER PLACE without Saddam Hussein in it. And it was a task Clinton couldn’t seem to accomplish when he was in office. Same as Bin Laden. Who I believe Clinton was offered and he said thanks but no thanks….he isn’t a threat to us. This country was attacked on 9/11/01 by Bin Laden and his followers have vowed to destroy our country and kill our citizens. George Bush has kept this country SAFE FOR THE PAST SEVEN YEARS PEOPLE. They have foiled how many attacks plotted??? This country was founded on the basis that we would help the little people who could not help themselves and that is what Iraq is about along with protecting ourselves. We have not lost the Iraq war, WE have won. And I have heard more soldiers who have come home say they are doing GOOD THIGNS OVER THERE and they believe in this war. We as American citizens sitting in our homes right now should be supporting these men and women over there fighting, not talking about losing a war that we have fought hard for and are WINNING. It makes me sick to listen to everyone condemn this war and claim we are over there for no reason. NO ONE likes war…war is ugly and the media should stay the hell away from the war and let those men and women do their job and stop making it look like we are losing the war. We are NOT LOSING. We are on our way and we will prevail. McCain Palin 08

Does this post help or hurt Obama? Think it even helps more unlike when I heard it earlier today. If an idea followed his, he deserves some credit. He may be guilty of exaggeration but at least not lies. Mccain stole change but never credited Obama, then Obama switched to change we need, Mccain followed suit, then next thing, he has stolen more of the same and today, he stole ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Does Mccain have any ORIGINALITY? IF IT IS NOT OBAMA’S CHANGE, IT CAN NEVER BE THE SAME AS OBAMA’S. Obama’s change is the BRAND, Mccain’s is the GENERIC.

Posted by: vuzous | September 16, 2008, 11:28 pm 11:28 pm

That shouldn’t surprise us that Obama lied about the stimulus package. He also forgot to tell us there is only one Senator who has received more campaign contributions from Freddie & Fannie than him either.
Obama didn’t tell us that McCain co-sponsored the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005. It failed in the Senate. In his speech on the floor of the Senate McCain stated,”If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.”
This is exactly what happened. Obama is a loser.

Ryan,
We agree on the nat. Gas, so that’s good. I can’t agree with leaving the oil for the sake of leaving the oil…Realistically, we’re going to need fossil fuels for 40 years at least. Think for a moment about how many things are made from oil-contact lenses, heart valves, shopping bags, baby oil, saran wrap, steering wheels, tires, asphalt roads, jet fuel….it’s not realistic to say let’s just roll our sleeves up and invent new fuel sources like that.
It’s not just the oil and gas, its all the things made from oil that have to be replaced, like the very keyboard I type on…
Only market forces can bring about new fuels. Take the Prius….when gas was cheap, they did just ok…now, much better. Replacements to oil will have to come about the same way.

“R” – I think you got everything wrong except the fact that we are winning in Iraq.
The problem is not whether we are winning or losing in Iraq…
IT IS WHY WE ARE THERE?
Was Sadaam Hussien a bigger threat to America that Osama Bin Landen?
Anyone in there serious mind will not answer yes to the above question.
When you want to save your country with pre-emptive strike, you must go kill the main enemy first.
Please don’t bring 9/11 and Iraq in the same sentence. We all know that al-queda was not there in Iraq before bush started the war. We all know that bin-laden himself called sadaam an “infedel”.
Sadaam was a bad sead. But I would feel safe if Bin-laden was killed first.
So just remember – YES we are winning in IRAQ now after those 4000+ brave soldiers gave up their lives.
But we could have won the actual “War on Terror” much sooner if we had concentrated on Afghanistan instead of Iraq.
Well…..now back to the news above…….Way to go Obama (taking credit for something you didn’t even think about) LOL…….

Mike: NICE TRY. Read the FULL statement made, and you will probably READ the following: “[T]hose involved in the drafting of the legislation say it was MORE A MATTER OF AGREEING ON A GOOD IDEA and was not a matter of, as Obama claimed, his proposal having “formed the basis for a bipartisan stimulus package that passed the Congress.” You Obamabots REALLY need to learn how to read. McCAIN plans to: Leave minimum wage at $7.25 an hour, which is where current law will take it to by 2009.
OBAMA plans to: RAISE minimum wage to $9.50 an hour by 2011.
* So who really cares about the middle class, it is NOT John McCain who has 7 HOUSES.
* It is NOT John McCain who has voted 19 times AGAINST a minimum-wage increase. (This is the pathetic actions from a guy who has received his paycheck from taxpayers for the 26 years he has been in Washington)
John McCain is a disgusting person, and he does not care about the poor, or the middle class who are struggling to try to get by everyday!!

It’s only fair….
Obama Fact Check….
· Obama is a Christian, not a Muslim like many GOP suggest.
· Obama did not refuse to put his hand on his heart during the pledge of allegiance, the pic was taking during the National Anthem.
· Obama DID have more executive experience than Lincon.
· Obama will NOT raise taxes for those who make less than 250,000.
· Obama will NOT be the youngest president ever, there were 4 younger than him.
· Obama does NOT belong to a black separatists church.
· Tony Rezko did NOT finance his house as McCain suggested.
· McCain does not have the worst vote attendance record, McCain does.
· Obama did NOT sponsor sex ed for kindergartners, it was clear to be age appropriate.
· Obama IS a natural born citizen, Hawaii is a state.
· Obama was a community organizer far more than Palin was in politics, McCain said otherwise.
I think it’s clear, McCain is still a liar, Obama has for the most part, told the truth.

There were 94 tax increases proposed in the Illinois senate, and Obama voted for all of them. Wake up, people, this guy will say anything to get elected, and his history does not indicate he will stand by anything he has said. The other day he said he would not eliminate the Bush tax cuts right away, what does that mean? Hi lies, he lies over and over again, and you just keep believing that once he has any kind of real power he’s going to change? He’s going to be worse!

thats not the point the point is … it is Obamas job and duty to wait around and be duly recorded not voting present on final passage of all bills no exceptions! Jake…Question for you: Might you be contradicting yourself below?
“”The Obama campaign argues that in January 2008, Obama “was the only candidate to propose a fiscal stimulus plan centered on tax rebate checks for the broad majority of Americans. The bipartisan bill that passed less than a month later was centered on rebate checks to the broad middle class along the lines of what Obama proposed.”
That is true.
Obama proposed a tax rebate aimed at middle class families.
“…the bill that eventually passed more closely resembled Obama’s than either Clinton’s or McCain’s…”
“…those involved in the drafting of the legislation say it was more a matter of agreeing on a good idea and was not a matter of, as Obama claimed, his proposal having “formed the basis for a bipartisan stimulus package that passed the Congress.”
But…wasn’t that the basis of the stimulus package…rebate checks…which was Obama’s idea…???

Barack Obama has 22 speechwriters, and uses mainly three who were featured in a NYTimes article a few months ago. If he wrote his own speeches, he wouldn’t have to haul his telepromters all over the country, he could just use written cue cards like the rest of the candidates. He could just see a few key words on a cue card and go from there, but he has to use the teleprompters because they are not his words, his thoughts, and they were certainly written by others. Wake up!

Posted by: Grammy Barb | September 17, 2008, 12:05 am 12:05 am

McCain showed up to vote? That’s amazing — I didn’t realize he had done that in years. As a side note, McCain keeps talking about how he supports renewable energy in his TV ads, but he’s voted “no” or not even shown up for the last 8 votes on the most important federal policy to support renewable energy. I guess all those oil industry contributions made him a little conflicted.

- JOHN McCAIN also LIES when he says that obama will raise taxes on small businesses– HE WILL NOT, Obama will cut taxes on small business, and John McCain knows this, he has been corrected over and over by the media, BUT John McCain still keeps lying, and lying, and lying!!
THE REAL LIARS, who have lied over, and over, and over, ARE JOHN MCCAIN, AND SARAH PALIN — Sarah palin IS RIGHT NOW UNDER ETHICS INVESTIGATION in ALASKA, and John McCain (the phony reformer) is helping Sarah avoid answering questions in the case. Why would two people who have nothing to hide refuse to PARTICIPATE IN THE ETHICS INVESTIGATION in Alaska, because they know that they are LYING FRAUDS!!! John McCain and Sarah Palin are proving that they will be Bush, and Cheney PART 2

Posted by: S | September 17, 2008, 12:10 am 12:10 am

John: Stop the lies!! John McCain has not taken taxpayer money for earmarks ever since he started his Senate career 26 years ago. As opposed to your Senator Obama who gave over $1 million in earmarks to Michelle’s employer after she had received a 200% raise from that same employer. These are the facts. Stop the lies!!

Oh, yeah, of the 364 lawmakers who received money from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae between 1989 and 2008, Senator Chris Dodd received the most. But next in line was Barack Obama, and he was in the Senate for only three of those years!! John McCain in 9 years received a total of one sixth of what Obama received in three years. How can Obama be out on the campaign trail railing against a corrupt culture in Washington with figures like this staring him in the face? Obama is part of the problem, not the solution.

Pinning McCain to Bush is laughable…
McCain is clearly no Bush….
Infact I don’t think no one in this world (except may be that 19% who approve his job) would want another Bush……..
But the thing that surprises me is that with such an unpopular sitting republican president…the democratic party candidate should be leading by atleast 25-40 points in the national polls….Why isn’t that happening?????????? Why is the ruling republican candidate leading in national polls???????????????
Did the democrats seriously wasted a golden chance to change the power by giving this empty suite the nomination??????????
OR Is it that the Mccain is really a reformer who could gain the confidence of people by overcomming his own party’s failures????????????
……..something to think about!!!!!!!!!!

No, Obama didn’t vote for it because he was busy raising money and campaigning for the presidency – the same thing he has been doing since he entered the Senate in January 2005.
BTW, tonight he is hobnobbing with the rich and powerful elite liberals, the jetset who could care less about America but wants Americans to see their crummy movies.
More elitism from Barack Obama.

Just like Obamain his book inflated his resume working at an international consulting firm consulting with japanese investors and other foreigners. Wearing suits making the money (just before his epiphany to community organize) turns out to be a total fabrication the firm was a small international business newsletter other black people worked there.
According to coworkers back in 2005 after his books release said everyone wore jeans and Obama did not meet with any one let alone Japanese investors. He collated data and check facts nothing more.
I see a disturbing pattern in Obama view of himself and how he exaggerates on his behalf.
It is clear he will do any thing to become president.
Obama and the Democratic Party are playing the American public big time.
Wake up America do want to go back to Jimmy Cater economic policies that do not work and does not benefit the middle class at all?
If Obama is such an agent of change why did he pick Joe Biden the oldest Washington INSIDER in the pocket of trial lawyers and credit card companies…..Please.
At least McCain had the GUTS to look to the future and chose a real reformer.

the point is… Obama is hiding his real associations and he is glossing over his votes and if he did try to get the troop decision delayed.. thats akin to George HW Bush meeting with the iranians to get the hostages released in 1980

what is the problem with a rich person owning more than one house?
think how much of a boost it would be if each rich person was to build 1 additional house per year!
maybe Obama can mandate it when he gets into office

Obama and the democrats left the Illinois budget in shambles. Now, this economic failure lies about his success on a stimulus bill. More talk, more lies, more of Obama.

If Biden leaves the ticket as is being reporting in breaking news tonight, it will bring back the case of Thomas Eagleton, the Dem’s 1972 VP nominee who was forced to resign from the McGovern ticket because of mental illness and allegations he received electric shock therapy.
Maybe we can give Biden electric shock therapy, and make his bad hair plugs stand up. It can’t make him look any dumber than he already looks and sounds.

He said it ‘formed the basis’, not that he wrote the law or sponsored it.
You said
‘In January 2008, “Obama was the only candidate to propose a fiscal stimulus plan centered on tax rebate checks for the broad majority of Americans. The bipartisan bill that passed less than a month later was centered on rebate checks to the broad middle class ALONG THE LINES of what Obama proposed.”
THAT IS TRUE.’
You said
Obama proposed a tax rebate aimed at middle class families…..the bill that eventually passed MORE CLOSELY RESEMBLED Obama’s than either Clinton’s or McCain’s ……
If he proposed it first (he did) and the bill that passed ‘more closely resembled it’, and was ‘along the lines of it’ than anything else, I think you can say it ‘formed the basis’.
This is playing with semantics, Jake- what’s your agenda?

Hey, John,
How about you PROVE to me that Obama DIDN’T attempt to negotiate with the Iraqis to have the U.S. troop withdrawals delayed.
The story was reported in yesterday’s NY Post, based upon an interview with the Iraqi foreign minister. According to a follow up, there were other people in the room at the time, so it couldn’t be totally denied as Obama would have liked to do.
The press release from Obama’s campaign was a carefully crafted statement that actually ended up admitting the truthfulness of the article.
So, like I said, how about YOU prove to everybody that it’s not true…………

“He didn’t vote in the final one cuz it had too many republican earmarks for the rich…. ”
John,
So he didn’t vote for the stimulus package that gave money to all americans in need – just because it also had too many republican earmarks???????????????
REALLY……………..That doesn’t sound right to me!!!!!!!
This is not the first time he had done this…….he did voted “NO” for a credit card interest rate bill in 2005 that would limit the rate to 30% – just because he wanted it to be much lower…….RESULT: The credit card interest rate is not at all limited………VERY FUNNY…….
IT SEEMS LIKE SOMEONE NEED TO TEACH OBAMA THE OLD SAYING…….”SOMETHING IS BETTER THAT NOTHING”
Please don’t take this personally…….but for a guy like you with a family of 4 to support …. it shouldn’t be hard to understand this saying……correct?

Although I respect Obama for where he has gotten in his live and he seems like a fairly nice guy and fairly smart but being a nice guy and fairly smart does not change his positions that are totally against my morals and ethics. Will you people PLEASE drop it with the “she didn’t know what the Bush Doctrine was.” David Gergen, a man who has advised several Presidents, stated that it was an unfair question. Not too many people, politiciand or members of the press, actually refer to that doctrine without including a reference to the “pre-emptive strike” prong of the doctrine. If Gibson would have phrased the question properly, MAYBE she would have known what he was talking about. I received a degree in political science and I am a bit of a political junkie, ut I did not even know what the Bush Doctrine. Also, as was finally admitted to by James carville, the doctrine has different means to different people–there are many rpongs to it, the doctrine of pre-emption being the most prominent.

John McCain claims that he will provide health coverage to the uninsured but studies show that John McCain`s health care plan WILL HAVE NO IMMEDIATE EFFECT on the number of people who currenlty have no health insurance!
Also the study showed that John McCain`s health care plan would actually result in MORE PEOPLE WITHOUT HEALTH INSURANCE, (20 million more people will probably lose their health insurance because of John McCain`s plan), BECAUSE John McCain`s health care plans would lead to employers DROPPING health benefits that they currently provide. Employers WILL NO LONGER offer their workers coverage because of John McCain`s plan
*SO IF YOU HAVE HEALTH CARE COVERAGE RIGHT NOW FROM YOUR EMPLOYER — John McCain`s health care plan will cause your employer to drop you!! You will have NO health care coverage at all!!!
*If You DO NOT HAVE HEALTH CARE COVERAGE, John McCain`s plan will do NOTHING to help you!! You will still have NO health care coverage if John McCain is elected!!

This is why the middle class, especially white women, are leaving the Democrat Party in droves – because Obama looks down at them as worthless little people except when it comes to their votes that he needs.

And if you tax rich people beyond squeeze threshold, they just quit business, go black market, under the table offshore, send jobs out of the country.

Whether Obama exaggerated is a minor point in the scheme of things and certainly does not reflect adversely on Obama in any significant way. I wouldn’t care whether he exaggerated or not…this is typical of campaigns…they all exaggerate on occasion. What will determine my vote in the end is the idiocy of the past eight years…a president lying to get us into disastrous quagmire in Iraq, a president whose leadership has been the worst in history and McCain wanting to keep the lunacy up and at the same levels when we are having a meltdown in this country. We desperately need new leadership and Obama may not be perfect but he is certainly head and shoulders over the sleazy McCain.

According to the “Non-partisan Center for Tax Policy“, Obama’s tax plan would offer greater tax relief, tax cuts for low and middle-income earners. Obama`s offers a LARGER tax cut than McCain would for low and middle-income earners.
PROOF as seen on CNN Money.com:
IF YOU EARN THE FOLLOWING AMOUNTS you will get the following tax CUTS from each candidate:
*EARN Under $19,000
McCain cut ($19) – OBAMA cut ($597)
*EARN $19,000 to $38,000
McCain cut ($113) – OBAMA cut ($892)
*EARN $38,000 to $66,000
McCain cut ($319) OBAMA cut ($1042)
*EARN $66,000 to $112,000
McCain cut ($1009) OBAMA cut ($1290)
*EARN $112,000 to $161,000
McCain cut ($2614) OBAMA cut ($2204)
*EARN $227,000 to $603,000
McCain cut ($7871) OBAMA cut (-$12)
*JOHN MCCAIN CAN TALK, AND TALK ALL HE WANTS ABOUT CARING ABOUT THE MIDDLE CLASS, BUT THE FACT IS JOHN McCAIN WILL GIVE THE POOREST AMERICANS “LESS“ TAX CUTS THAN HE WILL GIVE THE RICHEST AMERICANS — THAT IS NOT CARING ABOUT THE MIDDLE CLASS MR. JOHN MCCAIN!!!

The Wall Street problems is due to people changing the rules and facts to pump the economy. You do realize that those 3 things right there are a death blow to lots of employment by those small businesses. you think unemployment is high now, let those all come thru and small businesses will just become family run only. Basic Economics here is pretty simple, these plans here will be a disaster for America!!!!

The rest of the media are shills of the Obama campaign and only call out McCain.
I GUARANTEE YOU, the rest of the media will just ignore this. They are so obsessed with helping Obama win the election they’ve sold their souls to George Soros, MoveOn.org and the Daily.Kos

So let me get this straight… Obama’s plan most closely reflected what all the brightest minds in congress crafted and passed when all was said and done?
Then why shouldn’t he take credit for shaping it? Just because all the other pols in Washinton don’t want to give him credit, it sounds like they took most of his ideas.
Now I ask you… do you want the guy who is proposing ideas that the majority are settling on as the best, or the guy that admits he doesn’t know diddly about the economy?
Furthermore, McCain, what difference does it make that Obama missed the vote if everyone knew it was going to pass (81-16 is no squeaker)? He was out battling on the campaign trail to make it to the White House this year.
And for that I applaud him, because he’s the best candidate for the position.
Obama/Biden ’08!!!

So McCain’s a liar but now Obama’s a liar and a hypocrite for calling McCain a liar. Obama’s stupid too – how many politicians have ever gotten through campaigns without relying on quotes taken out of context, plays on words, distortions and elaboration? It was just a matter of time before he stepped into it.

This is all Bush’s fault. Bush should have regulated all American corporations and made them singular government entities, run by a Super-Federal administration. All companies in America should be government owned and managed- like China. Look how well China is doing in the world economy!! A vote for Obama is a vote for this type of change!! VOTE FOR OBAMA- the REAL “red state” candidate!

Oh, and thank God for Obama’s stimulus package. I was able to buy a 35 inch flat panel TV with 1080 DPI at Walmart. Unfortunately, now I can’t afford cable TV because I spent my $600.00 on the TV! Oh well. Obama will change everything, giving me my free healthcare, free cable, free bus pass and more free government hand-outs than I am already getting. Life will be much, much better for the likes of people like me!

You mean you don’t think it was an opinion piece, or that you didn’t intend for it to be an opinion piece.
Assuming the data is accurate, the data doesn’t necessarily support the conclusion you made – you overlooked the possibility that her popularity needs to be fostered by maintaining a higher profile, that people might feel she’s being to heavily managed, that they don’t know enough about her record and they feel they should know more at this point, the find the distraction without reference to issues tiring. Because all of those possible scenarios she’s got the ability to control by deviating from her current routine. As a matter of fact she’s going to be doing more interviews and starting to answer questions on the stump.
Maybe the bubble bursting is inevitable as you said, but you didn’t reference any data that would logically lead you to conclude that that was the only possible scenario.
Obama would say you lied.

“”was the only candidate to propose a fiscal stimulus plan centered on tax rebate checks for the broad majority of Americans. The bipartisan bill that passed less than a month later was centered on rebate checks to the broad middle class along the lines of what Obama proposed.”
That is true.”

But though the bill that eventually passed more closely resembled Obama’s than either Clinton’s or McCain’s, those involved in the drafting of the legislation say it was more a matter of agreeing on a good idea and was not a matter of, as Obama claimed, his proposal having “formed the basis for a bipartisan stimulus package that passed the Congress.”
Doesn’t sound like he’s inflating anything. So the bill looks like Obama’s proposals and that’s just a coincidence? What’s he supposed to think? He proposed something and other people proposed something else and the end result looked like his proposal but it’s somehow dishonest to say he shaped the bill? Please.

It’s really anoying that the MSM contorts itself to give the appearance of being even handed with the candidates. For example one story about a McCain untruth, one story about an Obama untruth. When infact, the McCain campaign is in an all-out frontal asault with blatant lies, and there is very little from the media calling them out. Instead it’s “both sides are doing it” What a bunch of false crap. It’s as if they want to make sure its a close election for their vested interest. The news media is pretty sad when they let obvios lies go unchallenged.

Obama is a modern day version of Claude Rains, The Invisible Man. Even when he allegedly votes in the Senate (a rarity if you can actually see him there voting), It seems that no one, ever sees him there during the alleged votes he casts. Perhaps he has been taking lessons from David Copperfield on how to become an illusionist.

Posted by: Sylvia Johnsen | September 17, 2008, 4:56 am 4:56 am

hey John,
Here is just one example you requested…btw it was a plan to bail out the mess and train wreck Bill C. and Dems created;
from the NY times 9/11/03
The Bush administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago.
Under the plan, disclosed at a Congressional hearing today, a new agency would be created within the Treasury Department to assume supervision of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored companies that are the two largest players in the mortgage lending industry.
The new agency would have the authority, which now rests with Congress, to set one of the two capital-reserve requirements for the companies. It would exercise authority over any new lines of business. And it would determine whether the two are adequately managing the risks of their ballooning portfolios.
The plan is an acknowledgment by the administration that oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — which together have issued more than $1.5 trillion in outstanding debt — is broken. A report by outside investigators in July concluded that Freddie Mac manipulated its accounting to mislead investors, and critics have said Fannie Mae does not adequately hedge against rising interest rates.
This should have been a no-brainer, right? With hindsight, we can see that the Bush administration had accurately diagnosed the problem in the lending market and had a plan to address it. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac reluctantly supported the plan. However, Democrats objected (emphases mine):
Among the groups denouncing the proposal today were the National Association of Home Builders and Congressional Democrats who fear that tighter regulation of the companies could sharply reduce their commitment to financing low-income and affordable housing.
”These two entities — Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — are not facing any kind of financial crisis,” said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ”The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.”
Representative Melvin L. Watt, Democrat of North Carolina, agreed.
”I don’t see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing,” Mr. Watt said

I too and still voting for Obama because everyone is cheering for McCain and Palin for the wrong reasons and not for the right one’s…We all know that regardless of who gets in office will have to raise taxes..People have to take responsibility for their action’s and stop blaming the Government…If McCain gets in there will be without a doubt another 4 more yrs of Bush…and women will not have the right to choose what to do with their bodies…and there’s not way I’m going for that…Among other issues that’s important to me.GO OBAMA…

Thus far, I haven’t been able to find any source, other than FOX (which is biased in the other direction) that doesn’t pound McCain/Palin for the slightest infraction, meanwhile letting Obama’s gaffes and slipups slide. John Mc Cain is a lier and only out to take the middle class under. He has been in congress for over 25 years and voted only for the rich. He is Bush over and over and will never change. He does not offer any real change except what we have already had. I will not vote for someone that can not give any real answers to the problems, except to say he will fix it. He is so out of touch it is unreal.
It is time for someone with some real direction to take over. The polls are all wrong and Mc Cain does not have a change in this election. I am Obama and would not vote for Mc Cain if he was the only one running. I can not stand the man!!!!!

Posted by: Connie Wagle | September 17, 2008, 8:16 am 8:16 am

Okay, John, I am going to help you here. You have a lot of questions, so I am going to do my best to answer them for you.
First off, BO is not about to take Indiana. Check your facts. According to latest polling, McCain is up by an average of 4.7 in that state. You can find the info on Real Clear Politics.
I’m a McCain supporter and you asked if I have ever been broke. I have nothing to prove it to you, but I can tell you that I spent about a year living in a basement only able to eat rice, and canned green beans and corn while I worked and saved as much money as I could in order to become a productive citizen. I took jobs that I hated just to pay bills, which I barely did. I lived in a scary neighborhood and had a car that worked less than half of the time, and I had absolutely no one to turn to for support, so I had to work hard and I had to educate myself. Now, I am living 100% debt-free in a beautiful home in a wonderful neighborhood, I have a college education and a great life. This is not because of a government program – this is because I worked my butt off to get here. If I can do it, so can others. I know that someone who is dirt poor doesn’t have to have assistance, unless they have a physical or mental disability, in order to pull themselves up and become something better than they once were.
Palin is not avoiding the media – she has had interviews and continues to have them. She is also not “avoiding” the law, she is making the smart choice by not standing by while an Obama-supporter driven lawsuit is brought against her over a very trivial matter.
How can McCain give us change? Look at his record. If you want facts, go to OntheIssues.org and you can see his history of votes and quotes regarding just about any issue you wish to find. Using the phrase ‘even Karl Rove says the GOP is full of it’ is misleading. He said that the ads were going to far on both sides, though Obama’s were the worse of the two. Also, pointing out the lobbyists in McCain’s campaign is misleading unless you also mention the lobbyists in Obama’s (including Biden’s son).
Compared to what you are paying in gas and food a tax increase would make very little difference? That depends on what kind of a tax increase you are talking about. If you are talking about a corporate tax increase, then everything you now purchase will increase in price. That includes gas, food, clothes – everything – because that cost is then shifted to you. It can also affect your pay; if you work for a company that is having to pay more for its goods because of corporate tax increases, then it is likely that your pay and benefits will not rise as rapidly as they could. It’s all economics and it’s all common sense.
What makes me better than you? I don’t know. Tell me a little about yourself. Seriously, to address your question, the only reason people say that McCain and Bush are the “same” is because they are from the same party. I urge you to take a long, hard look at McCain’s policies and plans – visit his web site. A vote for McCain is not a vote for Bush’s third term, no matter how many times Obama and his supporters say it is so.
Name ONE THING the GOP has done to help the economy – here’s a huge, massive thing: the GOP supports a strong defense system. Without a strong defense system, we could not be where we are today. While it is true that the war in Iraq costs far too much, it is also true that we have not seen another attack on our soil since 9/11. That’s been seven years – pretty startling when you think about it. Our country simply could not be strong, economically or in any other way, without a strong national defense.
As for the debates, did you ever watch any of the primary debates? Just asking. Your take on them may have been very different from mine, but I don’t think Obama is strong in the debate. Otherwise, wouldn’t he have agreed to at least one of the town hall discussions that McCain suggested? But I agree with you that I’m looking forward to the debates. I think they’ll be fun and very informative. I am especially looking forward to the Biden/Palin debate. I obviously a McCain supporter but I love Biden, and especially love him in a debate. I think Palin will be able to hold her own; she’s very intelligent and articulate, but I’m curious to see what happens.
And yes, I have checked the polls. Which poll are you checking? I suggest going to Real Clear Politics instead of MSNBC or whatever is telling you that Independents are turning blue.
But good for you for taking such an interest in politics. Although, I might suggest, if you’re so poor that you can’t afford gas, maybe you should spend some time looking for a job instead of posting to blogs? Just a thought.

Posted by: Deidra | September 17, 2008, 8:22 am 8:22 am

We might not have had another attack since 9/11- but is it because Al-Qaeda simply chose not to attack yet? Look, the fact is we still have not been able to catch Osama, nor considerably stamp out radical Islam.
Deidra, in any country, maintaining a military imposes a cost on the country. And I suppose it’s kind of a chicken and egg question-which comes first? For sure, we need a strong a robust economy to even protect American’s own financial security. And if we do not have a strong economy, maintaining a powerful military is out of the question too-how are taxpayers going to give the govt budget to spend when they themselves are suffering? And when our economy weakens, investors flee.
Yes, McCain wants tax cuts-but even for the cooporations. Now, where is he going to get the money from then? He has to get it from SOMEWHERE. We are in a huge hole not just because of the economic policies but because of Iraq. You know, the Chinese are the ones we are billing on our credit card, but of course they are charging interest, and the amount currently has about twelve zeroes behind it, and somebody’s going to have to pay for it one day.
We must first have a strong economy before we can have a strong military-we have to be strong financially too. Otherwise, the terrorists don’t even have to attack us to weaken us.

Posted by: Grey Matter | September 17, 2008, 8:56 am 8:56 am

Grey Matter: You’re absolutely right in your assessment; having a strong military is vital to our economy, as having a strong economy is vital to our military. The two items do go hand-in-hand, just as you said.
I think the question of where money will come from if taxes are cut is a really good one, and an important one for us to discuss. I’ve often heard politicans, on both sides, say that they will cut taxes (or at least cut taxes for the majority of Americans) while they will increase expenditures in a variety of areas. The math just doesn’t work out.
I believe that McCain economic plan is the better of the two candidates’, but of course that is up to the American people to decide. McCain is looking to repeat what happened during the Clinton years; balance the budget through bipartisan efforts to control spending. McCain has a very lengthy history that can be looked to in order to give credence to his claims that he is adamant about cutting wasteful government spending. Right now, I think we can all agree, our biggest expenditure is the Iraq war, and one of the most important reasons to support McCain is that he will see to it that the Iraq war is ended with victory, making another war in the region very unlikely, whereas Obama has vowed to end the war. It is the opinion of many that pulling troops out before victory can be achieved will lead to another war in the near future, that could be deadlier and costlier. It is better, and less expensive in the long run, to finish what we started so that we concentrate on getting our own country back on track.
When I was deciding which candidate to support, as an Independent, I looked at both candidates’ economic plans (as well as their other planned policies) and judged which I thought to be the smartest and the safest, and which plans I thought were the most achievable. I chose to support John McCain, because I think he does have the right plans and the record to back up his claims. Does that mean that I agree with all of his policies? No, but I have yet to find a politician whose policies all my own. Does that mean that I think everyone who votes for the other candidate is stupid and ill-informed? No to that too. I do think that there are a lot of people who are not educated on what it takes to run our country and how different policies and plans will impact our future. And I further think there are a lot of people who gather all of their information from television ads or left (or right) leaning blogs without doing the research needed to have an informed opinion. And that, to me, is just sad.

Posted by: Deidra | September 17, 2008, 9:34 am 9:34 am

Haha, I’m glad I’m able to have a civil discussion with you. Sometimes I’ve been derided as being dumb or stupid by people who support McCain because I don’t agree with them. Glad to know there are plenty of people who aren;t like that :)
Well, for me the reason why I don’t agree with McCain’s policies are because of his approach towards tax cuts-letting the tax cuts for the rich to continue and continue tax cuts for the middle income. The thing is the top 1% of the income ladder contribute around 50% of all taxes paid. Where is McCain going to get the money from to continue funding the Iraq war? I mean, currently we’re borrowing money from China and stuff, and they’re charging interest.
Someone’s going to have to pick up the tab one day. I agree with Obama’s policies because he would at least increase taxes on the upper-income and corporations, so he’s going to get quite a bit of money to hopefully get rid of the huge deficit. And we do need money if we want to have a war.
I think it is also important that we build up the military back to its original strength before Iraq-in order to face future conflicts. This is something Obama has vowed to do. Iraq was a disaster, and the best we can do now of course it to try and adapt to the situation.
I don’t see the Iraq war being won anytime soon, because the Iraq war can be won only when the country is finally stable and not overrun with insurgents. I think the problem is that in order for a democracy to flourish, Iraq needs to have other strong institutions such a free media, research groups and think tanks to support it-otherwise it’ll just crumble. Their people’s mindsets need to change, and unfortunately this can’t happen fast enough. Because they’ve been under a dictatorship-and colonial rule before that, Iraqis aren’t able to properly support a democracy.
His choice of Palin has also been a point of contention for me, since she appears shaky on foreign policy. I mean, considering McCain’s age, I think he should have factored in the fact that he might not finish his term and his VP would have to succeed him when choosing his VP.

Gee I wonder if the ladies on The View would confront Obama about this lie?
Obama has to inflate everything because he has no accomplishments of his own.

Posted by: riley | September 17, 2008, 10:04 am 10:04 am

So, Obama should have said:
“I presented a plan in January and Congress later passed a stimulus package. Evidently my plan was a good idea, because Congress passed and gave you basically what I proposed”
“Did they choose John McCain’s ideas? No, they didn’t. Somehow, it seems I have good ideas and John McCain doesn’t.
“Just like the Iraqi government and Condi Rice have agreed with my timetable for withdrawl in Iraq. Just like Condi Rice and George Bush and 5 former Secretaries of State (including McCain’s own advisor Henry Kissinger) have agreed with my idea to use direct diplomacy with Iran BEFORE we bomb them (instead of bomb first and talk later, like John McCain seems to want to do).”
“Just like how I presented a plan LAST YEAR to regulate a Wall Street financial industry that is out of control, while John McCain is still waiting for a 3 year commission to study his lobbyists plans, before he disregards everything and ‘goes with his gut’ irregardless.”
So, to sum up:
“My ideas and judgement = good”
“John McCain’s ideas = wacky and irresponsible”

Posted by: Linda | September 17, 2008, 10:08 am 10:08 am

This is the worst reporting I’ve ever seen. How can someone put information such as this on the Web while his only source of information is reportedly off the record Democrats? Unless you have more substantial proof of people saying he had no part the proposal of the Stimulus checks this column is pretty much just editorial trash.
In addition someone can only be guilty if proven so.

Sure, you the right to think what you want, but will you please not resort to attacks on my intelligence? There are people who support McCain with whom I’ve been able to have a civil discussion.
And what do you mean corporations don’t pay taxes? They do. It’s levied on a percentage of their profits.
Look, even if we want to take a hardline stance with Iran or Noth Korea, we must have the means to do so. If we do not have a strong economy, we will not be able to have a strong military either- and we will not be able to deal with any future threats.
We are running in a deficit, and the money has to come from somewhere. The upper-income and the huge corporations-especially the oil companies which are rolling in huge profits are those that can afford to bleed. And government regulations can of course control corporations so they will not be allowed to drive up costs with the addition of extra taxes.
And socialism is more than just giving people a tax cut and credits. It means the state doesn’t allow any privatisation and all your banks, land, assets and whatnot are all predominantly controlled by the government. I don’t see that happening here anytime soon just because of tax cuts.

What is a Republican’s definition of elitist?
A half black, half white man who pulled himself up from from a poor family in Kansas and worked so hard that he got the highest merit honors possible at Harvard, then turned down huge paying Wall Street jobs to do grass roots work in poor neighborhoods.
Do you ever wonder if Republicans believe the garbage that spews forth from their own mouths?

True Patriot:
FACT: Obama was born in Hawaii. He did not “pull himself up” from anywhere in Kansas.
FACT: Obama’s “typical white” grandmother was VP of a bank.
He also attended a prestigious school in Hawaii.
What evidence OTHER THAN that from Obama or his books exists to prove he was not only offered jobs with Wall Street firms, but also turned down those same offers?
Elite is an attitude not a dollar amount.

So what is liberals’ reaction to the recent CFTC report that says most likely speculation has had no effect on oil prices? This makes democrats bascially flat out wrong on their assessment of the reasons for the energy costs.
Chances are you haven’t heard of the report since there has been a near blackout in the media and democrats are busy with the partisan side show energy bill farce. The CFTC says it is hard to track some of the transactions but there is NO evidence of speculation playing a role and actually long term futures decreased this year.

Who is Obama kidding? President Bush proposed rebate checks in January. And it was hardly a new idea, they did it back in 2001, too. Obama sure does love taking credit for stuff he didn’t do.

What a crock of Rightwing BS here!
Y
Some of you people really sink to new lows of ignorance and idiocy!
A friend retorted “All politicians Lie”
Well, but we’ve seen an absolute MARATHON of lies these past 8 years from the biggest liars of all: the Repugs!
And as McSAME keeps showing us, they LIE and THEN Forget about it!
And just this morning we see McSAME boostering for “Accountability” for this financial meltdown, when JUST MONDAY he was telling us the economy was doing “Just fine”.
What!? He already forgot about that? Certainly he already forgot which party has presided over this wrecked economy these past miserable 8-12 years!

THe stimulus package is nothing short of an obama attempt to nationalize the economy. If you think nationalizing anything, especialy medicine for some reason like “Oh all of the poor people who can’t get the waiting list that they need”, than listen up. In Canada they have nationalized health care. They now have long waiting lines for treatments to slove life threatening problems. THis is a disaster. A conversation with a Canadian doctor might go something like this,”Help me I need khemo therapy tommarow or I die” sorry the waiting list says you can’t get it for a year and a half have a nice day.” Bottom line nationalizing anything does not work. If obama succeeds in nationalizing our economy he will make us no beter than communist russia. Please do not let him do that. Please value your freedom, please value the very principals on which this country was founded. And please don’t fall into the media’s trap and make victims out of inocent bystanders like wallstreet CEOs. Please help save our country.
