Obama Postpones SNL Appearance Due to Hurricane Ike

ABC’s Sunlen Miller and Matt Jaffe Report: Senator Obama has postponed his upcoming ‘Saturday Night Live’ appearance due to Hurricane Ike barreling toward Texas.

"In light of the unfolding crisis in Texas, Sen. Obama has decided it is no longer appropriate to appear on ‘Saturday Night Live’ tomorrow evening," Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki explained in a statement.

Obama’s appearance will be rescheduled for a more appropriate time.

The senator will go on with a previously scheduled Saturday morning event in Manchester, N.H. and then will return to Chicago instead of flying to NYC for the season premiere of the show.

Sen. Obama has been monitoring the hurricane thus far from the campaign trail.  He received a midday briefing on Friday from FEMA Administrator David Paulison and spoke later in the day with Houston mayor Bill White. White told Obama that Houston is prepared for the hurricane, Obama spokeswoman Linda Douglass said. Obama offered to do whatever he could to help, including using his website to raise funds for relief efforts.

Sen. Joe Biden, also scheduled to appear with Obama at the Manchester event on Saturday, cancelled as well due to the hurricane.

"In light of Hurricane Ike and its path through Texas, Sen. Biden will not be traveling to New Hampshire tomorrow," said Biden spokesman David Wade. "We intend to pick up our regularly scheduled travel on Sunday from Wilmington to Charlotte."

This is the second straight day Biden has cancelled a trip due to Ike – late Thursday, he scrapped a Friday swing through Texas for fundraisers in San Antonio and Austin.

When Hurricane Gustav was hitting Louisiana, Obama took a break from campaigning to monitor the storm.

Obama shows he has class.
McCain betrays America with his dishonest, dishonorable campaign.
I’M VOTING OBAMA.

He should go on SNL, not as a cameo joke thing he was gonna do. But just to ask for support for victims of Ike.

He would not have missed this opportunity he and his people had been pretty smart. Where was Michelle on 9/11 and where was he on 9/12.

jackt51 … I would rather have 4 years of McCain with the possibility of Hillary being elected in 2012 .. than 4 years of Obama … you may be able to dismiss the fact that he spent 20+ years in an anti-American church where the minister shouted “God da**mn America” and the audience screamed their approval … and then Obama lied about it … 20+ years!! … think about it!!

You Should look in a mirror about smears. Both with a dirty political campaign instead of on knowledge and policies based campaign. Who wants to be the first?

Obama is an honorable man who respects the struggle of all Americans. His compassion toward those in the path of hurricane destruction, is the same compassion he has toward those in the path of war and economic hardship. That’s why he cancelled his SNL appearance. He is a true leader. You get what you see. No lipstick here.

He cares about the people,, is that why he had his big deal in a football stadium? H is a fake. And he just may be a great community organizer,,,, is that like a playground supervisor?

Geez, guy can’t win for trying. Go on SNL, he’s a celebrity. Stay home, he’s trying to look good for the media. Why can’t it just be that he cares about what people are going through and chooses to be respectful? He’s not the sort to fiddle while Rome burns (that’s a colloquialism, not an attack, Republicans) — why fault him for that?

Obama should get Michael Phelps (the host of SNL’s season opener) and go to Texas in a boat a la Sean Penn and have Phelps swim out and rescue people ! (I would prefer Mark Spitz.) Don’t tell the press, just do it. J.H.C!! now that would be a maverick. I’d vote for that! But in America, it’s better to just appear to be concerned. btw, Im voting for O but I was an Edwards supporter early on. Obama should put Edwards on the stump to suck all the oxygen away from Palin. The press would explode! For God’s sake, he was the MOST progressive candidate in the top tier. The only economic populist. The only one addressing poverty and corporate power, and the only one who would hold the Bush administration accountable. But don’t hold your breath because the Democrats will never play offense or do something so bold. I have to give it to McCain on that front. Oh, the John Kerry of it all…

I guess Obama is concern with Texas because it has more votes than Louisiana. He certainly is not worry about the thousands of homes that have been hit by the two storms in the last ten days. I would like to know where Michelle was on 9/11. I guess she was home taking care of the children like he and Charlie Gibson think Sara Palin should do since she is a woman. I wonder if he will put his family first before his country or if only a woman has that issue to deal with. I wish someone would ask that question of him.

1) To those questions I’ve seen on these blogs repeatedly regarding where was Michelle Obama on 9/11 (and I wonder what this has to do with the content of this article): she was in Chicago because their girls’ school was starting.
2) Regarding this article: Obama does the right thing and keeps to the background. Unlike McCain, who staged a big photo-op during Gustav – getting in the way of everyone – and the GOP who made some crocodile tears on the first day of their convention (but at least it was an improvement over three years ago, what with the cake eating and shoe shopping…)

Obama’s website? Currently asking for visitors to give to the Red Cross or Save the Children to assist families displaced by Hurricane Ike. McCain’s website? Currently displaying it’s latest smear ad without a mention of a storm that is destroying the Texas and Louisiana coasts.
As a person who currently does not know if she has a home to return to, I see at least one candidate who is concerned for others.

Hillary lost the primary for 3 reasons:
1) poor campaign organisation
2) negative ads
3) too much lies
I like Hillary very much, but this is not sexism to say she missed her campaign. The more McCain will go negative and untrue, the more the american people will see the same old samed old republican tactics.
It works 2 times, but it won’t work this time.
The Palin aura will not fade so quickly, but it appears that the tandem Obama/Biden is better balanced that an out-of-touch McCain/versus hockey mom Palin. There is more policy differences between Palin and (the real) Mc Cain, that between McCain and Obama. They differ on abortion, stem cells, climate change, earmarks, energy. Mc Cain took Palin for political reasons and for that, he (and not the MSM or Obama campaign) must be considered as sexist.

Palin pales in comparison to Hillary. Any woman voter who has any respect for all that Hillary stands for should not be voting for Palin. Hillary is a powerful woman – in thoughts, in action, and in being a symbolic respresentation for all women who want to go all out and achieve more in life and career. If just being a woman and having to cope with family problems is a qualifier for running for public office, then every woman I know should qualify as a candidate. McCain picked Palin because Obama didn’t pick a woman to run beside him. After seeing more of Palin’s dirty linen out on the street and after having seen 8 years of the Republicans, Americans need no better reason to choose Democrats for the office this year.

If you want to get into preacher issues: Sarah Palin’s preacher said, (while she was beside him) that everyone will come to Alaska from the lower 48 when the “End Times” come so they had better be prepared by improving infrastructure, etc. He also invited the Jews for Jesus nut to their church and they gave that idiot money. Jews for Jesus has been denounced by every denomination of Judaism and will that will certainly NOT help the GOP ticket in Florida.
This idea that Rev. Wright said something inflammatory every single sermon over his 35 plus year career and Obama in the pew every single time is ridiculous. He mentioned in his book that he and Michelle attended a couple times a month and even less after the children came and grew up. Less than 30 seconds of soundbites after 35 plus years tells me that Rev. Wright is probably not as controversial as Palin’s “speaking in tongues” pastor.

Posted by: RationalDem | September 13, 2008, 5:19 am 5:19 am

People who are attacking Obama for this move don’t have all the facts. During Gustav, Obama used his website, his email and text message networks to get his supporters involved in relief efforts. He didn’t make a big deal out of it and he didn’t use that for political gain. you can call him all the names you want, but he is a good man. He was there in Iowa during the floods earlier this year. He does not grandstand and make a show of his “service” like some candidates who constantly want to tell you how noble they are. He just gets to work – and the reason you don’t know about it is because it’s NOT “political,” just part of his commitment to grassroots change, and all of us coming together to make our country work again.
As someone who has family in this storm, I appreciate the Senator’s choice (though I wouldn’t have blamed him for going on with the appearance). And I *don’t* appreciate people making rude comments here, about this. Just take it to another topic for once. Just for once, okay? Be mean about Obama somewhere else, and all the McCain haters can be mean about him somewhere else. Can’t there just be some times when we’re good to each other? Is that totally too much to ask?

Democratic Party Convention has no single theme! If you notice, Obama kept saying the word change and hope. He basically saying that he wants to run the country on policies of the old democratic policies. That is not new. It will increase government and debt! His tax cut is really welfare checks! Think about it, 40% of us do not pay taxes. So, he say 95% will get a cut in taxes. He is giveing those who are not paying taxes money. So, he will increase debt in the light of bailing out mortgage firms and in a slowing down economy. Plus, if you re-watch his videos from early may and now, you notice he just say things that his crowd want to hear or who ever he is speaking too. He is getting more careful in what he is saying now, but he has lied more than anyone. He knows that the media is doing the job that he wants his VP to do, attack. I am sure he is using his money to fund major networks like ABC, CNN. Money do corrupt media!

You know that if Obama went on SNL the Republican slime machine would have been all over him. Republicans have no plans to help struggling Americans, all the Republicans want to do is to create diversions and distractions. They are divisive and dishonest. Where are your plans McCain? Obama has specific plans for each and every issue. We need the Democrats to take over to get out of this Republican-made mess.

He’d Rather Win The Election Than Portray The Truth
John McCain ran an honorable campaign in 2000.
He was beaten due to scurrilous dishonesty.
He’s learned the lesson well.
He’s hired those who did this to him.
And now, they are doing it again.
McCain has said that he would rather win the war than win the election.
In fact, as we have seen time after time this week, he would apparently rather win the election than convey the truth.
This approach brought us George W. Bush–and the dissembling, half-truths, omissions and distortions to come. And the tragic consequences that have followed for individuals and families across the nation and the world.
As Americans, we often have short memories and powerful impulses. We tend to act on the latter. This is why history can repeat itself.
Remember. Remember how riled up by emotion many became last time. By impulse. Without thought. Remember the statements that were made. Remember the realities that followed. Remember.
You can feel what you feel now–anger, aggression, glee, without examination of the underlying truth–for a moment.
You will live for the consequences for years, decades–perhaps for the rest of your life.
Remember the thoughts and feelings that preceded these last 8 years.
Remember.
According to the non-partisan FactCheck.org (http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/factchecking_mccain.html), McCain has strained the truth about health care. About small business. About education. About taxes. About corporate welfare. About energy independence. About free trade.
We’ve seen this before.
We were distracted from the truth in just the same way before.
And we’ve lived the consequences–for the past 8 years.
This is the way we need to change the world: By realizing what is true, rather than realizing what emotes us for the moment.
Think.
Remember.
And act accordingly for our future.

I also heard Mr. Obama say quietly recently that with all the secret service and hoopla that accompanies any kind of appearance now, that he would only be in the way and causing undo stress to those just trying to do their jobs as first responders.
Just to change direction for a moment: Has anyone considered that Hillary Clinton didn’t want the VP nomination?? She has now the most powerful voice in the senate and will get much more accomplished there then in the White House.

“Obama is the enemy?”
No, actually it’s people like you. You are the one of the biggest problems this nation faces. Stupid ass people who don’t see AMERICA was formed to be a diverse nation. And it is, so grow up and get used to it.
Defeating morons with mentalities like yourself is a key reason people want Obama.
McCain is a bumbling Magoo who sold his “mverick” status to try and get elected. He can’t even stand up to his own party to get the running mate HE wanted. (Liberman) His beauty pagent sidekick proved to know nothing about the things ANY potential Vice President should know when asked very basic question. She’s good a spewing overly rehersed lines though.
One candidate is a Harvard Law school graduate with a concentration on international law and international relations. The other finished in the BOTTOM 1% of his class after his daddy got him into the academy.
One man is self made and has had nothing handed to him. He’s had to work for it. The other had his daddy get him started, the he dumped his wife to marry a younger, rich heiress. A real American “hero” right?
Obama has a plan for his nation that will benefit over 85% of the people. McCain has a replica of the Bush plan which benefits the top 2% of the wealthiest people in America.
Palin tried to get “You can’t blink” to catch on as a slogan. Perhaps for many supporting McCain and Palin, it should be “You can’t think”.

The crap about Obama being a celeb makes me want to puke. McCain has NEVER been one to shy away from guesting on SNL himself. The difference is that Obama inspires a lot of people. McCain’s campaign was boring a lot of people until he put Palin on the ticket. By the way how is it that we expect ANY president or presidential candidate to be visible and show support when disaster strikes, and yet for some of you, if Obama does that it’s supposedly his ego or selfishness. Sounds to me like you are imposing your views on his good actions to come up with a highly negative interpretation of what he’s doing. What have we come to when a man tries to use his campaign resources to HELP people and you say “he thinks he’s the messiah?” What looking glass have YOU gone through? Good is now evil if Obama does it, and lies are now truth if McCain is the one saying them? The fact is he cares and is showing it like any leader should. It’s called leadership. If you can’t acknowledge that, you are a pathetic human being.

Hey True(?) Patriot,
Because you are white and have sex with African men, that does not add to diversity in my America. That adds to more whiteness in Kenya.
I would respect Obama more if he went to Keynia and uplifted his people, instead of tearing down our great Nation to be like his third world Keynia in the continent of Africa.
Facts add up to racism to you. NO Obama bastard son of nobodies.

Posted by: Mrs.Phoenix | September 13, 2008, 8:42 am 8:42 am

america is not a nation that was formed to be a diverse nation.
it actually is just white people keeping minorities low on the totem pole. women aren’t given a true chance – hillary and now palin are wonderful examples how they are just getting clobbered in the media and people never/aren’t taking them seriously. gays don’t have rights – i don’t care about marriage rights – but they can’t even have a say on how their money or assets are given to when they die (ie, their partners, etc).; and african americans and hispanics are left to keep the country clean and rich white people’s butts clean.
now mind you, i don’t support obama. he is weak. doesn’t have the experience to move this country forward or protect it. i was supporting hillary because she at least would have bill on her side plus she always was able to articulate the issues and how she was going to resolve them.
however, i don’t have that choice anymore. hillary is not on the ballot. i am interested in the safety of this country and experience. i also have confidence with palin on the ticket now, that there will be change forthcoming.
the obama negative ads and every single time i see obama bickering on tv about how mccain said something bad about him, or how mccain didn’t play fair, or how mccain put on some lipstick…it’s just stupid!!!! obama is wasting all his time complaining about mccain rather than teaching me his ideas or describe what change he plans to do and how he is going to do it.
mccain is not a replica of the bush plan.
mccain is not more of the same.
mccain and palin are true agents of change.
mccain and palin will have the experience needed to change things.
how funny that obama says he will use the brightest minds to run the country – why because he doesn’t have one of his own?
at least mccain will know how to run this country. but i am also very pleased to learn that he will have a bipartisan cabinet and bring this country together.
i was willing to have obama in 2012 or 2016 when he got more involved in the senate and did some real work to show off what he could do – but he is just as wet behind the ears as Palin and well, he is the one taking the Presidency. everyone has been so mortified that palin is that close to being president – shoot! has anyone thought that Obama is running for that position??? hello????!!!!!
obama get some real world experience and write some laws that become laws – not just books that propaganda your past and bring nothing to this country other than more money in your pocket.
*
yeah obama may use his website to bring attention to these causes and not bother going there – is that the kind of president you want – to run the country through is web site and not even go to the places where tragedy strikes???? do you want a president who will share his latest secret via text message at 3 am? bush may be a lot at his home in texas but i can picture obama being at his home running the country over internet.
**
get real.

“I also heard Mr. Obama say quietly recently that with all the secret service and hoopla that accompanies any kind of appearance now, that he would only be in the way and causing undo stress to those just trying to do their jobs as first responders.”
As an undecided voter I find this extremely hypocritical considering when President Bush used this same reason for not visiting Disaster areas (not just H Katrina)the left in the US rallied against him again and again.
But when Sen Obama says exactly the same thing it is to be praised.
More recent I have heard McCain be attacked by some in the left for using this reason as well in the Gustav aftermath.
This is not a matter of class but common sense.
ALSO
I noticed the FACT CHECK section is dishonest.
Sen Palin said ‘I think if you go back in history and ask that question of MANY vice presidents they may have the same answer’
The fact check response was.
‘But if you were to ask every living vice president………’
I guess you hear what you want to hear because she DIDN’T SAY LIVING
SHE SAID MANY!!!!! And she qualified it with ‘in history’
I am sorry but when even the ABC FACT CHECK video is faulty they have lost all credibility in being honest and fair in reporting on the election of this year. You can not compare those two statements. They are NOT equal. She did not SAY LIVING that was added by the person who did the evaluation.
EITHER a honest mistake or very DISHONEST and regardless it is and should be corrected. Even if corrected how many people now have a faulty view of that point because of ABC. And how has it hurt her standing with the American people??? With every vote so important in this tight race ABC should be more sensitive to errors in its reporting. Not professional at all.
That and the ‘interesting’ edits in Gov. Palins response to the religion question(ABC you know what I am talking about)If any one would compare the official transcript and the broadcast you will find many ‘questionable’ and ‘interesting in their placement edits’.
I am sure this (FACT CHECK ERROR) will not be a news item and there will not be an apology to the viewers and to Gov Palin. But then she should have a thick hide because… why?? Oh she might be confronted with more untruths from one of the three broadcast news outlets???
With all the false rumors about Gov Palins readiness to be VP ABC should not add more fuel to the fire.

Obama should have taken the opportunity to go on to ask for help for the victims of Ike.
Obama is selfish and did not want to waste an appearance on people without power–he can’t be seen so why go on stage.

I wonder why any politician would not use any free TV coverage.
Why wouldn’t a FREE TV and ADVERTISED FREE appearance be used as a platform to ask Americans to prepare to help fellow Americans in need. Or consider donating blood if might be needed etc etc.
I find this very odd he would cancel also because he is more than capable of saying any message he wants in addition to the ‘comedy’ and I don’t think the shows producers would say no to Sen Obama and a ‘call to help’ fellow Americans. Couldn’t he have said
[after the skit he might be in] thank you making people laugh is a fun but a serious situation is taking place and let me take this opportunity to not only entertain but to ask Americans to aid….
or something like that. {they have professionals Obama should be able to do much better)
Would think that would help too.
Just my two cents

Maybe folks should find other ways to knock people down…rather than go at each other on a website…..Texas is under a state of emergency….and the aftermath of the storm will certainly not go away as fast as any negative comments made here. People….give each of the candidates a break..lord knows they are showing the concern that they would if they were already in the oval office.

Hey Francisco Cardenas and especially Mrs. Phoenix: I think you guys need to spread your message to the undecided. You need to go post in the independent sites and in all the media blogs of the battleground states. People need to hear what you, as McCain supporters, have to say. I suggest you especially mention the white women having sex with Black men part and the crusty underwear piece. I think we need to associate more people like you with McCain. Thanks for all your help and hard work on our behalf.

Posted by: Sarah | September 13, 2008, 10:57 am 10:57 am

This is really a Catch 22 situation for either candidate. But..Obama isn’t the President. Bush’s (and FEMA’s) total mishandling of Katrina and aftermath ( three years of!) will go down in history. Any trip Obama would make to Texas RIGHT NOW would not only be a distraction from the huge problems they’re facing while the storm is still moving, (ie no water pressure, no power) but would probably be seen only as a photo opp. Hence the “Catch 22″. Most people would agree that he’ll accomplish more staying in communication with the mayors and Governor and raising a lot of money for the Red Cross as they are now drawing on their line of credit. McCain is hopefully doing the same, but his website had nothing earlier.

“Bush’s (and FEMA’s) total mishandling of Katrina and aftermath ( three years of!) will go down in history.”
Lets be complete and honest on ALL that mishandled the situation.
True that the president had blame and FEMA too, but that was the first hurricane that needed so much federal help and never before in history had the feds even helped in such things as evacuation. FEMA at that time only had a handful of employes and wasn’t capable of doing the type of aid required. The was plenty of people to blame. The city and state wasn’t without blame.
The city and state also had a failed to take care of its citizens and do not normaly ask for help from the federal gov beyond loans and emergency funds.
Don’t forget the heroes of the USCG that rescued for days those stuck of roofs and last time I checked the are a part of the US Armed Forces a federal agency.
The levies were destined to fail they were not strong as they should and that was known to many people though many local state and federal administrations.
Decades went by without upgrades and that is what did cause the most damage when they failed. It the local gov to make sure the levy system would hold and they kept putting off upgrading them ‘hoping’ they had another year before a storm of Katrina size would hit. (not like New Orleans hadn’t been hit by hurricanes before)They continues to gamble and they lost.
There were many failures but to level the blame solely on the Bush White house and FEMA is not what history will and does show. I have a neighbor who is a displaced person and his family from New Orleans and he is as mad at the mayor and gov ,of that time, as the BUSH adminisration.

The past dozen or so posts were so hilarious I just had to reply. Are you kidding me, you all actually think Obama was being sincere when he said if there’s anything I can do, just ask, and you can use my website too for Ike victims? LOL Still thinks he’s a superhero or God of some sort.
It’s one hurricane, one, and it takes up his entire attention span to “take a break from the campaign to follow the weather.” Just the tip of the iceberg if you think he’s ready to sit in the WH. “Disasters” happen a hundred times a day and we need a leader who will manage, delegate, deliver and stay focused in the face of disaster not because he “cares” (See: ‘Seeking Political Gain, Act Like You Care’ from the Dem Dictionary of Doublespeak) but because it’s his job and sworn duty to defend America from any threat, natural or manmade.

What I find so irrational about those criticizing Obama about his decisions on Ike is that DON’T YOU MCCAIN SUPPORTERS REMEMBER WHERE MCCAIN WAS THE DAY AFTER KATRINA??? Even when the extent of the misery was KNOWN, McCain was celebrating his birthday in AZ with one George W. Bush. I keep hoping that those images will be used in an Obama ad soon.
Not only is McCain the hypocrite, he has demonstrated his lack of judgment in picking a potentially dangerous, inexperienced nut as his running mate.

“The republicans do not care about the middle class or anyone who isn’t either a millionaire or giant corporation.”
Now that is flat out not true. I am a man with a disability and and even though I am more aligned to the Libertarian I am a member of the GOP but I do not just vote along party lines.
I am on social security disability and only get 9000 a year to live on.
That the GOP is only for millionaries is the biggest misconception and lie told about the GOP and frankly just shows how ignorant the average person is when it comes to that accusation.
I believe the govt should help those that need it but not on a welfare socialist state that gives money away.
From personal experence the biggest thing Ive noticed is the left wants to help those under their station but they have a disdain and contempt for them. I am not talking about all those but I have known the concept of you need the govt to tell you whats best for you. BS
BTW as both a man barley above the poverty line and a conservative those of you that bash the right will never win many elections if you stay ignorant whom you are really insulting.
Not some faceless rich white old man.
Did I forget to say every time a left do gooder in my local area messes around with things they know nothing about my life becomes more complicated and I don’t see change as such a good thing but want the damn thing fixed and then leave it the heck alone for a while. I have also not seen my life suffer or improve weather the adminstation is a DEM or REP.

“McCain chooses to not use things like a national crisis to get political gain!”
You mean, like showing a video that is essentially a 9/11 snuff film at his own convention? One that conveniently edited out the President of the United States on what was unquestionably the man’s greatest moment in office?
That’s not for political gain. Sure.

Posted by: ethel08 | September 13, 2008, 12:07 pm 12:07 pm

The convention was for the GOP base and if you had a twisted (frankly I find disturbing) reaction to a film about 9/11 based solely on who is viewing it or the context of it being shown then your view about the right is not based in reality and I can a sure you that for you to NOT think ANYTHING that is at a POLITICAL CONVENTION isn’t political (the DEM convention was political after all)
Then your view of the would will not be altered by talking on this site.
Why bother?
Or are you here to just hate and insult people you don’t know and what they believe.

David in WI, you do know that McCain wants to privatize social security, right? Do you really think that is going to make your situation easier or better?
The Republicans don’t believe that there is anything in the public trust. They’ve convinced the American people that Democrats want to run anything, LYING in their claims that the Democrat health care plan will mean a government-run healthcare plan, which every independent group says it won’t. But they don’t care. They just lie. And look at all the people around here who believe it.
The problem is that our nation needs infrastructure, and today’s Republicans ignore the boom of the 50s and 60s that was due in large part to investment in research and infrastructure. They willfully ignore that Dems and Repubs used to agree that America has to have infrastructure and education to grow.
Today, Republicans deny their party’s own greatness and spread cynical “us versus them” messages. When they get in office, they let huge corporations run roughshod, and in their wake have produced the credit crisis, the accounting scandals at Enron and the like, and on and on. Now we are left bailing out Bear Stearns and Freddie Mae and Mac because the Bush administration failed to enforce any regulations.
We are a nation, not a cut throat assemblage of hateful individuals where every person is out to get every other person, and it’s neighbor versus neighbor. But if you read the hate speech on here, which the Republicans have encouraged, you would think that’s what these people want. For us to continue to hate one another, and to believe that just because someone has a funny middle name, he or she is unamerican and a terrorist. It is shameful and certainly won’t restore our country to its former greatness.

“The convention was for the GOP base”
What does this mean? It is ok for the Republicans to “claim” 9/11 for themselves? As it only affected their base? Huh?
“and if you had a twisted (frankly I find disturbing) reaction to a film about 9/11″
I find it unsettling if you are not disturbed by those images. There is plenty of other footage that would remind people of what the nation went through that day. It is a time that Republicans should be proud of–for their reaction and attempts to bring people together. Why show footage that even news organizations have agreed is too disturbing to air–and without any forewarning?
“I can a sure you that for you to NOT think ANYTHING that is at a POLITICAL CONVENTION isn’t political (the DEM convention was political after all)”
Of course, conventions are political. That’s fine. That’s why I think Republicans could have shown footage of their leadership during that time, rather than using footage of people dying for their own political purposes.
Give an example from the Democratic convention when they showed footage of people dying on screen.

OK for starters I have experienced more that not only supports the view that the Dems will mess things up but have seen first hand the quagmire that gov help entails and how complicated the system becomes. Ever wait inline for something as simple as a ten dollar a month food stamp (forget the name for it now) program.
Its a simple ten dollar commitment to help and going to the DMV is a breeze compaired to that.
As far as social security it can not last at its current state and there is not an unlimited amount of money. The baby boomers are only now just starting to impact the system that is woefully not perfect. A fix is needed before the ss system fails completely.
I would rather just and it would be much cheaper for the govt to just give me the money for health care and let ME decide what company to use. Rememer I am diabled and not someone who can pay for his own.
Giving free health care to all is not the answer. Give it to those in need not those who don’t need it.
YOU all say the rich can afford to pay right??? From my point of view those making far less than What Obama considers the cut off point of taxing is rich. Its all relative.

Dem for McCain/Palin – leaders who fight corruption

Posted by: steve | September 13, 2008, 12:47 pm 12:47 pm

Those who are suffering with out health care. are not nearly as many as the stats say. Remember many qualify for federal and state aid but don’t know it (I have met people like that)
Many are like my brother in law who IS a rich jerk (does anyone care to guess who he votes for) he does not think he needs to ‘waste money on health insurance I am not sick’ He is counted in that uninsured American and many like him and then there ARE thoes that need insurance and cant buy it and that number IS to big but not as big after you look at the big picure.
Trust me free health care is not going to work other programs will suffer and It WILL be a mess. Think of going to the DMV but MUCH worse. It will only be some other govt program that will be a political foot ball for decades to come.
I have to go but I do know the history of the Republican party and the Democratic party and they both are not perfect.
The dems have good intentions but seem to have a disconnect with what needs fixing and what doesn’t. They seem to want to OVERHAUL instead of fix more times than not. You don’t need to reinvent something to fix it. Dems seem to mess around too much with things they don’t understand.

I really do have to go but at least it has been more civil
I don’t care if who you vote for just think long and hard why you are voting that way and do a ton of your own research and not just the internet.

Then, David in WI, what do you see in McCain’s plans that will help the uninsured? You continue to compare Obama’s health plan to the DMV, but Obama’s plan does not create government-run healthcare. This has been confirmed time and again by independent research groups.
I didn’t say either party was perfect. What I said was that you are making claims about the Republican ticket that are not true. You say do research, but then don’t point out any facts.
For example, in 2001 McCain said he couldn’t support the Bush tax cuts because they went against his “conscience” and would hurt middle-class voters. He said that such a tax plan would increase the deficit. In 2008, he has made that same tax plan, which he himself voted against, the heart of his tax policy. I’m not saying he’s wrong for changing his position. But I would like to know why he has changed it, and I haven’t heard him discuss it. What does he think has happened in 7 years that make those tax cuts more prudent?

I stand by my assertion that Democrats did not run a video in which people died on screen–footage that news organizations have agreed not to show because of how disturbing the images are–without any forewarning. Yes, I stand by the fact. Republicans did that in 2008 and Democrats did not.

Louise Kelly:
LOL! No problem.. I figured that out after I scrolled up later.
Just a note:
I’m Canadian and can’t vote but watching your election process with much interest and not a small amount of excitement. The last time I was so captured was when I was 14 when John Kennedy was elected. I remember staying up all night with my Dad as it was so close. Kennedy, like Obama was terribly criticised for guess what?
1. Inexperience
2. Young
3. Elitism
4. Charismatic
5. And the worst: being Catholic.
He made history and I truly feel it’s going to happen again.
I’ll be watching intently with crossed fingers and prayers over the next 51 days. And ignoring the hatred spewed out by the sickos. Attitudes like that won’t change overnight and certainly not on these blogs where they feed off each other. Your country needs Barack Obama and Joe Bidden; you haven’t had this kind of hope since Robert Kennedy decided to run.
Canuck4Obama&Bidden!!
P.S. Sorry, lol I tend to go on…..!

What a shame it’s come to this. We have so little faith in our govt’s ability to protect us from things like hurricanes that everyone has to stop what they’re doing and stand still whenever one comes around. Used to be (remember Bill Clinton) that FEMA took care of people, and we let them get on with their work with our best wishes. Now we all have to hold our breath, and politicians don’t dare look like they have ANYTHING else to do while a hurricane is in progress. Just one more thing to add to the list of what Bush has f-ed up.

David WI
Fema was a very efficient, well run Dept. before the Bush Presidency.
In 1998 the day after the ice storm that crippled Maine, VP AL Gore was here on the ground. Problems were handled quickly and efficiently……..people were reimbursed promptly for their losses. Out of State crews were brought in to restore the downed lines, and it was a MESS. You can still see some birch trees along RT#95, bowed over from the weight of that ice 10 years ago.
The neo-con administration’s biggest success, in the past 8 years, has been to reduce the size of the Government, and by appointing crony directors instead of compatant people, who get things done properly; while ladeling out the koolade to the masses about how BAD BIG GOVERNMENT is for the people, blabbing on about the welfare queens etc………..In reality the “WELFARE QUEENS ” are the corporations they give tax breaks to NOT YOU & ME.
Bush’s tax cuts to the wealthiest people in the country, have brought on this devestated economy we are in now, & going to be worse! There are people on the Forv=bes 400 list that are my former clients…….They are in their 70′s and they are NOT going to take their tax break and start a new business to create American jobs! If any thing they will use that extra money to speculate on the market……ALSO devestating for the rest of us! It gives THEM the CONTROL! Not you & me!
The self made man is no longer a reality, just a myth. Your Grandfather may have been a self made man……you Grandchild WON”T BE, because this rich 1% have changed the rules. They have pulled the rope ladder up into the tree house and NO NEW COMERS welcome!
Mccain/Palin will not only be MORE of the SAME, they will be MUCH WORSE!
ANd about that POW HERO STUFF!
Hear what another Great AMerican Hero, POW, fellow student at the Naval Academy and fellow POW with Mccain only for 8 years not 5 1/2……..has to say about electing John Mccaine for Pres.
Most of us who survived that experience are now in our late 60′s and 70′s. Sadly, we have died and are dying off at a greater rate than our non-POW contemporaries. We experienced injuries and malnutrition that are coming home to roost. So I believe John’s age (73) and survival expectation are not good for being elected to serve as our President for 4 or more years.
****************************************
As some of you might know, John McCain is a long-time acquaintance of mine that goes way back to our time together at the U.S. Naval Academy and as Prisoners of War in Vietnam. He is a man I respect and admire in some ways. But there are a number of reasons why I will not vote for him for President of the United States…………..read the whole story
http://www.military.com/opinion/0,15202,164859,00.html
it should be known that there were approximately 600 military POW’s in Vietnam. Among all of us, decorations awarded have recently been totaled to the following: Medals of Honor – 8, Service Crosses – 42, Silver Stars – 590, Bronze Stars – 958 and Purple Hearts – 1,249.
I have been paying attention and have heard Barack Obama state exactly his plans as President, and they are very well thought out.
Please listen……………..

I’m surprised the McCain campaign didn’t quickly put out feelers for replacing Obama on SNL tonight. McNasty is just that crass and sleazy!

Posted by: Franc | September 13, 2008, 1:56 pm 1:56 pm

independent white woman for Barack&Joe i really wish i didn’t have to clarify that – but mccain has forced it upon me.
The racism on this site and in this country is appalling. When people act in this way it is divisive – our country is once again being thrown into a culture war – for what? An old man’s legacy? A religious zealot? Backward thinkers? So we can install the draft again?
Do you really think your disability soc sec is due to the repubs? Dems tried, during an into the wee hours of the morning fight to save the cost of prescription drugs..if your soc. sec. was privatized, in this market right now, you have nothing.
Our citizens are under attack again for the very reason we fought the civil war.
the draft will be needed becz we have a 3 prong war just starting over the border of Pakistan..we are going into the beehive – if you think this palin thing just happened, think again. The tail wagging the dog approach. distract and attack. voters, citizens, lies, lack of integrity – believe what you want – too bad you can’t believe the truth.

Mr Obama
Will you please stop being so freakin’ noble? The right-wing media is the sort of enabler that Goering might have created. It will continue to aggrandise your opponents, who haven’t a shred of decency, and publish their lies as facts, just as they have done for Uncle Bush.

Posted by: Trader | September 13, 2008, 3:09 pm 3:09 pm

After 18-19 months of being an ardent supporter of Obama now I am changing my mind. Barak appears to be too weak, too intelligent, too soft against the nasty, dirty, shameless opponents and the adequite overwhelming republican media. At this critical times of stormy smear and lothsome agressive McCain compane, when I watch Barak soft .
talking on compane trail and moving slowly with his hands in his pockets as if lecturing in a university auditorium on scientific issues, I realise that he is not a fighter America wants. Now I REGRETT much, that I did not vote for H.Clinton, who could have been tough enough, because she is one of those well-trained Washington all-inclusive professioanls to withstang McCain misery and lies.
Barak is and will be loosing naturally unless he Stops casting pearls before those 2 nasty swines and shows energy and guts. I am deeply sorry for myself and for millions of Americans who put their believes behind Barak and now woach their hopes wanishing.
Please, bring Hillary back!

Clearly, Palin is a very cunning stunt.

While everyone should of course have their own opinion and thoughts (that was the point of democracy, remember?), I do wonder when it was that it became acceptable to tell people to go back to their, screw themselves, etc. simply because of their political preference.
Maybe the problem isn’t McCain or Obama- perhaps they just have nothing, aka a country full of people with no respect for others, to work with.

Posted by: Kim | September 13, 2008, 6:31 pm 6:31 pm

Then, David in WI, what do you see in McCain’s plans that will help the uninsured?
Are you aware that McCain wants to eliminate insurance programs provided by Employers and he wants to TAX the Benefit that employees recieve…He will give a tax credit for those that purchase their OWN health insurance…$2500 for individuals and $5000 for families…Given that the AVERAGE decent insurance cost around $7000 for individuals and $12000 for families DO THE MATH that doesn’t help people afford insurance…More people won’t be able to get it…Obama wants to make sure that people recieving help like you DON’T have to pay taxes…You indicate that you make $9000/year…so could you afford to pay $4500 for your insurance EVERY YEAR because McCain wants to eliminate benefits that may help you he calls it “pork” Seriously look at the plans proposed by each candidate, you may find that you are less conservative than you think…God Bless you either way…But seriously take a GOOD look at the candidate you find so appealing, McCain does not have your interestes in mind, he really doesn’t…Vote Obama/Biden 08

Posted by: Jilery | September 13, 2008, 6:31 pm 6:31 pm

Henry G- Check out the new ads…Obama’s recent comments may change your mind…Our Man Obama is going to give McCain a Thrashing so bad for his lies, his 5.5 years is going to seem like a vacation! Obama recently stated that “McCain would rather loose his integrity, than a political race” The lies stop now! & the reason that McCain couldn’t define Honor is because he doesn’t have any! Any Honorable man would not SPREAD the lies that McCain has been spreading! As for the self proclamed “pitbull” why not take off the Muzzle? Perhaps that dog doesn’t fight?

Posted by: Jilery | September 13, 2008, 6:37 pm 6:37 pm

Glad to see he’s attempting to reclaim a little bit of dignity. I couldn’t believe when I heard he was trying to use Ike in a political speech comparing it to some economic storm, how tacky! There are people fearing for their lives and worried about losing all that they own and he’s just worried about how to work that into a political speech? NoClass, NoDignity, NoBama.

Posted by: Ryan | September 13, 2008, 6:40 pm 6:40 pm

No Ryan- Tacky is when you use Noun, Verb, POW as an excuse for EVERY SLIMY thing you have done…We respect McCains service but their is a difference between Repect for service and respect for Country…Growing up the one thing I was taught by my parents is to NEVER TRUST A LIAR and McCain has proven a LIAR with his recent smear campaign!

Posted by: Jilery | September 13, 2008, 6:45 pm 6:45 pm

Oh and Ryan, my family is FULL of military- They all agree that you can’t put someone in charge that you can’t trust…People’s lives are on the line…If he will lie to get to the White House, he will lie if he gets into the White House…

Posted by: Jilery | September 13, 2008, 6:48 pm 6:48 pm

You all have it wrong. Obama’s not going on SNL because Tina Fey is going to slam Palin so hilariously that it will make headlines. Obama doesn’t want to be a part of that. Think about it……

Posted by: Danny Boy | September 13, 2008, 6:52 pm 6:52 pm

REPUBLICANS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR DESTROYING AMERICA’S LEADERSHIP IN THE WORLD.
What’s laughable is that you don’t see it. We are losing in competition against China and India. Russia will be another challenge.
8 Years of BUSH and 6 Years of Republican controlled Congress has lead us to the situation we are in today.
And the Republicans have NOTHING except racist comments and POW.
McCain/Palin are WRONG for America.
We have 500 Billion debt.
John McCain DOESN’T CARE ABOUT VETERANS. He just wants to play war and be a WAR president. He didn’t VOTE for the GI Bill, and he has turned down funding for other Veteran Bills. The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America give McCain a D- Rating!
Obama has a B+ rating. Check it out for yourself.
Because of Republican lack of oversight on the financial industry we are bailing out Goldman Sachs, Freddie Mac, and Fannie Mae.
You think that anything will change, when McCain has all of the top lobbyists to Banks and Mortgage Industries managing his campaign???
You are DELUSIONAL if you think McCain cares anything about this country. He wants to be President FULL STOP. He will lie, cheat, and pick a completely unqualified VP nominee to get there.

Posted by: Susan | September 13, 2008, 7:51 pm 7:51 pm

Don’t you just love ‘hero’ McCain’s support of his fellow veterans? He may not have abandoned them in Viet Nam but he sure has since he got home.
It only figures that he’ll officially abandon Americans as soon as he gets to the white house.
