If you want to fix the Social Security finances, the first thing to do is DON’T MAKE IT WORSE! Diverting money from the system for privatization will make Social Security insolvent sooner rather than later.

He plaigiarized “his” famous “words” speech, a speech already given by Deval Patrick. He has lied about the sources of his campaign money. He had a shady deal with Rezko and his wife to buy his home and adjacent property, and continues to lie about it. He has had a 20-year relationship with his pastor, friend, and spiritual advisor who has thousands of words with ranting and raving hatred sermons condemning America and “damning” America. That is just the surface. He had a lot of audacity to run when he had so little experience, but, we know that people like Kerry and Kennedy urged him to run. They think that the American voter will follow their lead. Not this time. We have seen a great lack of wisdom and experience in his words and decisions. We have seen too much double talk in the debates, his speeches, and his decisions.

McCain has been bipartisan and against over the top government spending since his experience with the Keating 5. In the 90s he, along with Sen. Feingold(D) were fighting for campaign finance reform. Sen. McCain has 20 years of experience of working on reform.

At least we know for sure that Mccain and Palin are real americans. Some of us arent too sure where exactly BHO was born.

The strategy of the McCain-Palin campaign effort to try to neutralize the credentials of Senator Obama with a comparison to Governor Palin is at best a categorical mistake. Apparently, the GOP conventional wisdom is the “McCain-Palin” biography card for will trump over substance on the issues they are weak on and they want to make it personal and close to ground with their biographies. This could prove to be risky.
Senator Obama is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard, educated in Political Science and Constitutional law. The Senator is from a Mid-West powerhouse state of Illinois. Senator Obama’s senatorial experience has afforded him policy exposure and experience in the key issues of our day. Chicago and Illinois politics and issues are considered more typical of the diverse population and issues of the United States.
Governor Palin in comparison is a graduate of the University of Idaho with a degree in Communication-Journalism. To her credit, was Mayor of Wasilla and now the current Governor of the State of Alaska. Wasilla and Alaska are small in population and as a result not policy intense as the larger states and cities. Such experience is respectable but not red hot experience as suggested. Under Governor Palin leadership the state has performed poorly in education, 21 century job creation, and paying its fair share of Federal taxes relative to amount of Federal aid it receives.
The point here, the Palin to Obama comparison may very well backfire on the McCain-Palin Campaign when Alaska State performance metrics are examined.
Therefore, voters need to know more where each of the candidates stand personally on the issues, because any one of them could become President.
We must ask questions of them all. Do they know how the inter-workings of Congress and can they manage the Congress (VP is also President of the Senate)? Do we know where they stand on illegal immigration (Sarah Palin position)? Their positions on the risks of energy policy such as disposal of nuclear waste, drilling and endangerment to the environment and habitat? Energy trade with Iran? China policy? Monetary Policy? Apparently she thinks the only energy the US, aka the Saudi Arabia of coal (it ain’t clean, but we are burning the heck out of it to keep the lights on), has is oil. Alaska’s is about 14% of the US’s annual oil production, but it’s light sweet so I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt that economically it would round up to 20%. But I’m not impressed that when she says energy it doesn’t seem to even occur to her that coal, nuclear, hydro, natural gas, even solar and wind are included in that area.

grateful and fiercely loyal–loyal to the point of abusing their power
to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the
case of pressuring the State’s top cop (see below).
As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla’s Police Chief because he “intimidated”
her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska’s top
cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure
and she had every legal right to fire him, but it’s pretty clear that
an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn’t
fire her sister’s ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation
for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen
contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she
later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to
replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded
for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew
her support.
She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in
help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town
introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council
became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She
abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn’t
like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness.
Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything
publicly about her.
When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got
the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission…

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative”. During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents.
The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren’t enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn’t even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later–to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing.
While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once. These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city. As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state.
In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today’s surplus, borrow for needs.
She’s not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideasor compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren’t generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren’t evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them.
While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin’s attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her enemies list to this day.
Sarah complained about the “old boy’s club” when she first ran for Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of “old boys”. Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal–loyal to the point of abusing their power to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of pressuring the State’s top cop (see below).
As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla’s Police Chief because he “intimidated” her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska’s top cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure and she had every legal right to fire him, but it’s pretty clear that an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn’t fire her sister’s ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew her support.
She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn’t like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness.
Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything publicly about her.
When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no background in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this great job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party) engaged in unethical behavior on the job.
In a gutsy move which some undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a gutsy fighter against the “old boys’ club” when she dramatically quit, exposing this man’s ethics violations (for which he was fined).

Oh yeah, how about the in his senate positions, serving on the Foreign Relations Committee, the Homeland Security Committe, Veterans Affairs, Health, Education, Labor and Pension

I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992. Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her father was my child’s favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the residents of the city.
She is enormously popular; in every way she’s like the most popular girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and won’t vote for her can’t quit smiling when talking about her because she is a “babe”.
It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for seven months. She is “pro-life”. She recently gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby. There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby. She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.
She is savvy. She doesn’t take positions; she just “puts things out there” and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.

Apparently still reeling from being caught steeling no less than 12,000 US flags from the Democrats in an overnight raid recently, now authorities are revealing more theft complaints involving McCain and his personal entourage. As if steeling 12,000 flags and blaming it on Boy Scouts wasn’t enough, McCain now stands accused of steeling a copy of Gideon’s bible from a hotel in Minneapolis during his stay there for the convention earlier this week. Hotel employees gave a list of several items missing from the Hotel after McCain stayed there, including the Bible. Other missing items included three cocktail glasses, an ice bucket, several bars of soap, three rolls of toilet paper and those tiny little ketchup and mustard bottles.
Boy Scouts den mothers also expressed their dismay given the recent circumstances surround the wild accusations that somehow Boy Scouts were wandering the Invesco Area during the late hours after the DNC Convention and had stumbled upon 12,000 US flags, which they were then alleged to have stolen and fenced in Minneapolis to the RNC. “I am shocked” said one mother. “Little Jimmy is in by sunset in tucked in by 8:30 every night, including weekends”.
“These Bibles are no longer free to steal said the Hotel manager anonymously for fear of scurrilous reprisals by Republican fanatics. “It clearly states on the inside cover that you have to send away now for a free copy of the Gideon’s Bible” exclaimed the Hotel manager.
“You can’t just go willy-nilly taking things as if you own the world” the manager added. “I hear he was illegally downloading music off the internet last month to use in his TV commercials to bash the Democrats.”
Apparently McCain has long suffered from a rare disorder called “Hotel Kleptomania” stemming all the way back to his days in the Hanoi Hilton, where staff still insist he would take spoons, which have not been accounted for to this day. McCain still holds a grudge against the Hiltons, recently implicating young Paris Hilton in one of his regular tirades about Barack Obama, his staunch Democratic rival for the presidency.
The Hiltons were not available for comment, but a spokesperson for the Hotel chain said that McCain has been blacklisted from staying at their hotels since the early 70s due to missing items whenever he would stay at one of their hotels.
This is just one more blow to the McCain camp, still reeling from theft accusations including stealing Barack Obama’s political campaign theme and message as well, a message of change and reform. “We knew he had taken the message”, as did several witnesses who spotted McCain, Washington insider and veteran politician for a quarter century, spouting the term change and reform where several members of the American public were gathered.
One witness said he knew McCain had stolen Obama’s message when he heard McCain having tremendous difficulty pronouncing the word “change”. “It sounded so strange coming from Mr. McCain that you could readily see he was unfamiliar with the concept or how to pronounce the word” said one eye witness. A local panhandler handed McCain a dollar, thinking McCain was begging for a hand out. “I just felt sorry for the guy” said the homeless man, he kept saying “change”.
“Mr. Obama stated that “This is a sad day for all Americans” and lamented that McCain really had no message or content of his own to use for his campaign. Mr. Obama volunteered to donate his political message and theme to McCain just as soon as he was finished with them, after November 6th.

I’m a registered Democrat, but it’s important to be educated on all of the canidates’ views; you never know when you might disagree with them. Right after McCain’s acceptance speech Yahoo.com posted a news article; the article was a fact finder. It pointed out areas where McCain had made statements that weren’t strictly speaking true. In fact several statements were in direct contradiction with the facts; politicians always want to put themselves in the most favorable light so this should come as no surprise. Why do voters believe all the campaign promises? No one can keep all of the promises politicians often make. This is a sad, but I’m sure I’m not the only person who knows this. My opinion about Palin is simple; McCain picked her to improve his numbers. Look at all the disgruntled Hillary Democrats. He wants to capitalize on them. Palin is also a lot nicer to look at; looks shouldn’t matter, but in our society they do. There is also the age factor; she is a hell of a lot younger than McCain. Palin could pull in voters who believe McCain is “out of touch”. In my opinion Barack Obama will have a fight on his hands, the polling numbers are so close. Hopefully other women will also research the canidates; I would hate to see my gender degraded further by people who vote for McCain just based on the idea of having a woman in a high political office. John McCain won’t get my vote in all likelihood; I don’t care who his VP is. In the end he doesn’t care about the people; this is his third run for President (I think; if the numbers wrong let me know). I would just like to comment on what Young_voter said about a college student running for president. Their age shouldn’t have anything to do with judgment. Either you have good judgment or you don’t know. I have known people without a degree that have had good judgment and vice-versa so I don’t know what the whole college thing has to do with it! I also have concerns about ethic complaint against her as governor. “troopergate scandal.” Claims she, family members, administrative staff pressured police union after she took office to fire her brother inlaw who was involved nasty divorce from her sister. Claims made – Reported and alleged physical harm threats made by Trooper Wooten to family, but not substantiated by any witnesses or modern technology methods. Claims only started during divorce trial, and none prior to divorce. This is ongoing. I have been reviewing records in Alaska – McCain top lawyers are up there – she just recently has hired her own attorney and he is also protecting her administration paid for by state. A legislative investigation was going on and she said she would co-operate and wanted to be quite open. She denied charges. Then had to retract her statements. Since being chosen as Vice President – now she is not co-operating. Her attorney is trying to take to ethics board. Her personal attorney is taking witness statements and then sending on to ethics board. What??? I can see some possible major cover-up approaches. This attorney is protecting her and still HE IS ONE taking witnesses statements?? This is highly questionable??? Witnesses won’t testify to legislative body privately hired attorney hired for investigation. Legislative investigation was voted upon and approval given to proceed and privately hire attorney. Now she lodged an ethics complaint against herself. Then police Union filed ethics complaint against her. Why is her attorney with McCain attorneys there too, saying no to this and that?? Palin is pro-life. I am pro-choice. I respect everyone’s personal opinion. But I doubt if she will support Roe-Wade. Republicans and John McCain have never supported women’s rights. Equal pay – McCain voted no. Violence Against Women Bill introduced by Joe Biden – John McCain voted no. I am not sure Sarah will stand up for women’s rights since Republican support is not strong for women’s issues.
Children with special needs. She slashed Special Needs Program Alaska -big time cut. Now during speech she claims she will support. I doubt it. Not part of Republican platform.
I saw she is not supportive of controlling pollution drainge from corporations, mines to protect environment. Her history reveals environmental issues not important. Money seems to be important issue with her. I am concerned about health of all those poor Alaskans. Drainage into Salmon streams will most definitely make it into food chain. This is 2008 and we all know about corporate drainage and contamination. I am originally from rural community in Nebraska – insecticides used on crops for years have now seeped into farm wells my sister says. Major problems. Underground water spreading all around is occurring. Everyone think of Five Mile Island incident. Everyone remember movie Erin Brockovich with Julia Roberts about true PGE pollution and cancers and deaths and the cover-up. Palin’s lack of some environmental concern is a big health issue. Avoiding environmental concerns that will pollute is like giving a death sentence to her people. Just a fact and absolute truth – I am a medical professional. Big industry still to this day fights these measures.
Sarah Palin is against Gay Rights. There was one law against gays and she supported. Then Palin had to veto as Attorney General declared bill was unconstitutional. She changed her stance then. Gays did finally win only because she was forced to do so legally. I am not gay/lesbian, but I respect their rights.
I have some concern while she was mayor of Wasilla and she fired Librarian and police chief plus others. Rumor(can’t verify) is she took lots of department heads out as well. Recall was almost started by a large group of upset citizens. Popular librarian was rehired. This librarian after almost ten years left, just before Sarah ran once more for mayor. Some accusations of censoring books at the library and that librarian voted for Palin’s opponent. Police Chief was not rehired and he sued- lost only because his signed legal agreement with prior mayor that he could only be fired because of his job performance. He was performing his job well. City Municipal Codes state Police Chief can be fire at will of mayor with no reason. This legal agreement not voted upon by city council. Prior mayor forgot to do. I can see why this agreement signed – no one would accept knowing no job protection even existed. Judge stated this is only reason why he lost in court. Palin left Wasilla 23 million in debt. Librarian who no longer lives in Wasilla speaks out now and says yes she was pressured to censor books and Palin upset she supported Palin’s opponent for mayor.

Further, you don’t go to an Ivy league school because you have no place else to go. I would know I interview kids who beg me to get into an Ivy league school, I graduated from an Ivy league school. I can tell you likely either A. didn’t go to school or B. are trying to use the computer to shield yourself while you spread lies. Brown has an acceptance rate of about 13%, Columbia and harvard I imagine are about the same. I recommend to many of the students to transfer its not a big deal. If of of 20,000 applications you are not part of the less than 15% that are selected its not that serious. Did you attend an ivy league school? Did Mccain? Did Palin? if not what’s your point.

I don’t expect bush to do a whole lot about it although I will say my economics are in great shape under the Bush presidency. As for McCain one just has to listen to know what he wants to do. Silver State Bank in Nevada is shut

WASHINGTON (AP) – Regulators on Friday shut down Silver State Bank, saying the Nevada bank failed because of losses on soured loans, mainly in commercial real estate and land development.
Nevada regulators closed Silver State and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. was appointed receiver of the bank, based in Henderson, Nev. It had $2 billion in assets and $1.7 billion in deposits as of June 30.
Andrew K. MCCAIN, a SON of Republican presidential nominee John McCain, SAT ON THE BOARDS of Silver State Bank and of its parent, Silver State Bancorp (SSBX) (SSBX), starting in February but resigned in July citing “personal reasons,” corporate filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission show.
Andrew McCain ALSO was a member of the bank’s AUDIT COMMITTEE, responsible for oversight of the company’s accounting.
The younger McCain, who is the chief financial officer of Hensley & Co., the beer distributorship of which Cindy McCain is chairwoman, is the Arizona senator’s adopted son from his first marriage.
Silver State Bank ran into difficulty because of a substantial amount of “poor-quality loans primarily related to real estate development”

* In Milwaukee, election officials are investigating fake names registered by ACORN workers– a favorite voter fraud 101 ploy of ACORN workers. No word on whether anyone used “Fruto Boy Crispila:”
Criminal investigations could be launched against at least six voter registration workers who tried to add dead, imprisoned or imaginary people to the voter rolls, according to the Milwaukee Election Commission and the organization that employed them.
Officials are reviewing some 200 to 300 fraudulent voter registration cards, Sue Edman, the commission’s executive director, said Wednesday.
And even though the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now caught the fraud and reported it before the cards were turned in, the incident revived a four-year-old partisan debate over the integrity of Wisconsin’s voter registration process, as political groups step up efforts to sign up voters for the Nov. 4 presidential election.
“One woman called us to complain because her husband has been dead for 10 years and a voter registration was submitted,” Edman said.
In about 12 cases, deputy registrars paid by ACORN were “making people up or registering people that were still in prison,” said Carolyn Castore, ACORN’s state political director.
And in other cases, workers used the same address for numerous voters or used driver’s license numbers that did not fit the voters’ birth dates, Edman said. But most of the fraud involved submitting duplicate cards for voters who were already registered, and forging the voters’ signatures, Castore said.
ACORN found the problems and fired a dozen workers, Castore said. Five of them appeared to be working together, she added.
In New Mexico, it’s the same old story of ACORN using criminals to lead voter registration drives. KRQE reports:
ANDERSON (Anchor): If you registered to vote outside a supermarket, at a fair or even on a college campus, your information may have been collected by a criminal. News 13’s Michael Herzenberg is live in the newsplex.
MICHAEL HERZENBERG (Reporter): The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now or, ACORN, does not go door to door. But in public places they admit at times they employ criminals. They say like law abiding citizens they employ make great workers. Audrey Padilla works for the non profit organization ACORN registering people to vote.
AUDREY PADILLA: I think it’s a really powerful thing to vote.
HERZENBERG: The information she gathers on this form can be powerful if criminals get their hands on it and they have. Jeffrey Mahaffey did and he was convicted with 2 counts of raping a child, a habitual offender who stole a car. Yvonne Chacon did too – she pleaded no contest to 2 counts of forgery, 7 more counts are pending and so are 3 counts of credit card fraud. Michelle Rael also collected voter information for ACORN while under the supervision of probation and parole for drug possession and 1 count of identity theft.
RAY SCHUTLZ (APD Police Chief): It’s very alarming and very concerning to me.
HERZENBERG: We showed Albuquerque police chief Ray Shultz the records of nine people accused or convicted of crimes who collected voter registration information for ACORN.
SCHULTZ: This information in, you know, the hands of the wrong person could be devastating.
ACORN: I find it interesting. I do understand that it would draw some concerns.
HERZENBERG: ACORN spokeswoman Stephanie Blackwell says the nine people no longer work for ACORN but they lasted at most 8 days
HERZENBERG: How much personal information did they get?
ACORN: I don’t know exact numbers in terms of how many cards per person that they collected. I do know, so far, total throughout the state, we’ve registered over 60,000 voters.
In Florida, William Amos points to an ACORN-assisted woman with no job who secured a $42,000 loan on a house that she can’t figure out how to pay. Go figure:
Carolyn Patmon has lived in what she calls her “modest little house” in Carver Shores for 38 years. At one point, she owned it free and clear. Then she took out a loan to add a sun porch.
Because she was on disability and wasn’t working, she was offered a mortgage rate of 14 percent.
“But the rate was supposed to go down in a couple of years,” said Patmon, 59.
It didn’t. What the mortgage brokers had told her and what the fine print in the loan documents said were two different things. Within a few years, Patmon found herself owing $115,000 on a $42,000 loan — and being sued for foreclosure
Nothing about her story is particularly remarkable these days — except how it’s ending. Because Patmon went to Orlando ACORN, a nonprofit community organization with chapters nationwide, she has been able to stop the foreclosure process and is working on having her loan modified to more affordable terms.
Experts say plenty of help is available to those such as Patmon, but that homeowners need to seek assistance early and often. And they shouldn’t expect it to be easy.

We are writing to request an immediate investigation into whether or not the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, is engaging in criminal voting fraud, promoting fraudulent registrations, or criminally misusing taxpayer funds.
With the next election cycle quickly approaching, we are confident that the Department of Justice will be ensuring the integrity of our federal elections. Although the administration of elections is chiefly a function of state government, the Department of Justice must ensure that nationwide criminal voter fraud is targeted and eliminated as effectively and efficiently as possible.
Voter fraud represents a serious threat to the validity of all American elections. Each and every illegal vote cast cancels out the thoughtfully considered vote of an American citizen. In April, the Supreme Court upheld an Indiana statute requiring registered voters to present photo identification in order to vote. The Court, in a 6-3 opinion, noted that “the risk of voter fraud [is] real…[and] could affect the outcome of a close election.”[1]
One organization in particular has developed a reputation for lawlessness in the electoral process. The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, has repeatedly been associated with voting fraud, turning in fraudulent registrations, and misuse of taxpayer funds. The laundry list of inappropriate conduct including investigations and convictions of individuals associated with ACORN is far too long to include in this letter, but here are a few key examples:
* Last year in Washington, felony charges were filed against several paid employees and supervisors of ACORN. Over 1,700 fraudulent registrations turned in by the employees were revoked in one of the largest instances of voting fraud in the United States.[2]
* In March of 2008, an ACORN worker was sentenced in Berks County Pennsylvania to 146 days to 23 months in the county prison for making 29 phony voter-registration forms to collect a cash bonus from ACORN.[3]
* Dale Rathke, brother of ACORN founder, Wade Rathke, embezzled nearly $1 million from Acorn and affiliated charitable organizations in 1999 and 2000 but a small group of executives decided to keep the information from almost all of the group’s board members and not to alert law enforcement. Dale Rathke remained on Acorn’s payroll until a month ago, when disclosure of his theft by foundations and other donors forced the organization to dismiss him.[4]
* As of July 2008, at least three ACORN workers have been convicted of voter fraud in Kansas City, and one is awaiting trial. These ACORN workers in Kansas City flooded voter registration rolls with over 35,000 false or questionable voter registration forms.[5]
* St. Louis, Mo., officials found that in 2006 over 1,000 addresses listed on its registrations did not exist. “We met twice with ACORN before their drive, but our requests completely fell by the wayside,” said Democrat Matt Potter, the city’s deputy elections director.[6] Later, federal authorities indicted eight of the group’s local workers. One of the eight pleaded guilty last month.
* The Consumers Rights League reports that ACORN used taxpayer money to support “corporate shakedown tactics, counseling of potential homebuyers to use “undocumented” or “under the table” income to obtain mortgages, and to assist in obtaining mortgages for undocumented workers.[7]
At the very least, this pattern of conduct by individuals associated with ACORN has created an air of reasonable suspicion that ACORN is either engaged in criminal enterprise or does not have sufficient safeguards in place to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not used to those ends.
ACORN has routinely assured Americans that the aforementioned events and those like them represent isolated events by individuals not representing ACORN. Consequently, we are confident that they will welcome such an investigation to support their contentions that this pattern of misconduct is not endemic to ACORN’s operations.
We must do everything in our power to ensure that our electoral processes continue to reflect our dedication to a lawful democracy. Our civil rights and voting laws are designed to ensure that every American has their vote counted. Unfortunately, registering dead or fictitious voters serves no purpose other than to ultimately misrepresent and dilute the voice of the American people.
We respectfully request that you inform us whether you plan to initiate an investigation as soon as possible, and no later than September 8, 2008. We also request that you inform us whether the results of your review will be provided to Congress and made public. Thank you for your time and consideration.

THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a “bridge to nowhere.”
PALIN: “There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform — not even in the state senate.”
THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.
PALIN: “The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes, raise payroll taxes, raise investment income taxes, raise the death tax, raise business taxes, and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars.”
THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama’s plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain’s plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.
Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks, mainly for poor workers and the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families.
He also would raise income taxes, capital gains and dividend taxes on the wealthiest. He would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year would see taxes rise.
MCCAIN: “She’s been governor of our largest state, in charge of 20 percent of America’s energy supply … She’s responsible for 20 percent of the nation’s energy supply. I’m entertained by the comparison and I hope we can keep making that comparison that running a political campaign is somehow comparable to being the executive of the largest state in America,” he said in an interview with ABC News’ Charles Gibson.
THE FACTS: McCain’s phrasing exaggerates both claims. Palin is governor of a state that ranks second nationally in crude oil production, but she’s no more “responsible” for that resource than President Bush was when he was governor of Texas, another oil-producing state. In fact, her primary power is the ability to tax oil, which she did in concert with the Alaska Legislature. And where Alaska is the largest state in America, McCain could as easily have called it the 47th largest state — by population.
MCCAIN: “She’s the commander of the Alaska National Guard. … She has been in charge, and she has had national security as one of her primary responsibilities,” he said on ABC.
THE FACTS: While governors are in charge of their state guard units, that authority ends whenever those units are called to actual military service. When guard units are deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, for example, they assume those duties under “federal status,” which means they report to the Defense Department, not their governors. Alask

I watched the Sunday news show and noted the general disdain by the ABC Roundtable regarding John McCain statements regarding Governor Sarah Palin foreign policy creditials as a Governor of Alaska. Everyone thought that there was funny and there was no basis. How does ABC news reconcile that position with Governor Rick Perry of Texas standing up to President George Bush and the World Court opposition to the execution of Mexican nationals who did not have an opportunity to see their Mexican consul. Governor Rick Perry and the State of Texas ignored Bush and the World Court and in so doing conducted an amazing foreign policy for a state. States along the Mexican border such as Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California have had to deal with immigration issues and relations with Mexico on a day to day basis. Those Southern governors do have foreign policy experience. ABC news reporters display their ignorance when they do not recognize the intimacy that exists between states that border foreign countries such as Mexico and Russia.
