Obama’s Campaigning/Gustav Balancing Act

There is very cleary some awkwardness for the Obama campaign as it tries to ask for votes with a natural disaster about to hit.

We discussed this a bit yesterday, but since then, the difficulties have gotten a bit more obvious.

This morning, for instance, we learned that scrappy running mate, Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., has decided not to march in the Pittsburgh Labor Day parade this morning. Instead, he held a press availability in Pittsburgh to talk about Hurricane Gustav.

And last night, before a pumped-up crowd in Battle Creek, Mich., Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., took quite a bit of time to talk to the crowd about what’s going on 1,000 miles south.

"Before we start talking about some of the issues, I want to talk to you about how I’ve been spending the day," Obama said. "I started off at church this morning in Lima — thank you," he said, mispronouncing the name of the Ohio town (Peru is LEE-ma, Ohio is LIE-ma) as people applauded.

"And we did a little town hall meeting in Toledo, Ohio," Obama continued, "and stopped at Hamilton Lake for some sliders and made our way up here. But in between, while I’ve been on the bus, I’ve been on the phone with Secretary of Homeland Security Chertoff, talking to folks on the ground who are dealing with what could be a horrendous hurricane along the coast of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, maybe Alabama. And it appears that after the travesty of Katrina three years ago, some lessons have been learned, and that the federal government is coordinating effectively with state and local governments, making sure that evacuations are taking place and people are on the ground … ready to provide help and relief to those who may be affected.

"In fact, over the last couple of days, everybody’s attention has been focused on this hurricane coming, and whether you’re a Democrat, a Republican, or an independent –- doesn’t really matter, because we want to make sure that those areas are safe, and we don’t have time for small politics when we are faced with a threat like that," Obama said.

"And so, our thoughts and prayers go out to the families that are having to evacuate -– imagine how difficult and wrenching that must be, if you had just spent the last two years rebuilding your home and you now don’t know what’s going to happen. But here’s a point that I’d like to make, guys, is that that attitude of thinking about our neighbors, about making sure our politics isn’t small, making sure our politics is big, making sure that we are thinking about cooperating with one another instead of trying to rip each other down — that kind of philosophy is what America needs every single day and that’s part of the reason that I am running for president for the United Sates of America. And restoring that spirit every single day here in the United States."

His nod having been made to a national need to be free of petty partisan politics during this storm, Obama then proceeded to "rip" Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., over a number of issues, a series of attacks that included Obama saying he’s "tired of listening to folks who talk tough and act dumb" on foreign policy.

"John McCain says the economy’s made ‘great progress’ since George Bush took office," Obama said. "He says the fundamentals of the economy are sound. The guy who wrote his economic plan, his chief economic advisor, said you don’t really have a problem, you’re just suffering a mental recession, and he called you a nation of whiners."

You mean like figuring out a way to say that Palin lied about being against the bridge to no where (USA TODAY), and that she stated she would not allow her own 14 year old daughter to have an abortion if she was raped, and that man has not contributed to global warming. Basically the hurricaine has delayed the public to find out that this lady is a wing nut and was a fatal blow to McCains chances.

FRAUD obama TRYING to look qualified!
This guy is a staged prop – after all the Millions of $$$$ spent on that movie “event” he still cannot pull up 10 pts. Maybe Americans now know for a fact this guy is a FRAUD and will never be elected.

And of course the McCain Campaign campaigning against Obama because Obama is campaigning against McCain while this storm is approaching. Not to mention that McCain is campaigning, by being there using up resources, and saying look at me. I wonder how long it will take him to say POW

Good Job McCain – obama will say/do anything for his own political gain -
Rev.Wright told us so.
Hillary Clinton told us OBama is not qualified to lead our country
Biden told us also – and I believe them!
But – did they CHANGE their minds????

When will there be an investigative report (i.e. Brian Ross) on Sen. Barack Obama seeking more than $3.4 million in congressional earmarks for clients of the lobbyist son (Hunter) of his Democratic running mate, Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware? Obama succeeded in getting $192,000 for one of the clients, St. Xavier University in suburban Chicago.
At the same time, would like to hear more information regarding Sen Biden’s attempts to get his son out of the lobbying business during the fall campaign, and how that is going.
Thanks!

I really wish McCain and the Republicans would stop turning every crisis into a political opportunity. They really do sicken me. You can bet that if there were no election going on there would not be so much attention on this hurricane. They really think the American people are stupid. Of course, maybe we are..we keep electing them. Just like Obama says in his stump speech…we keep doing the same things over and over expecting a different result. I’m an Independent who will vote for change…Obama/Biden.

I’m giving my money to McCain/Palin now. I am Independent. My choice was for the woman candidate, but since the Dems picked the other identity politician, I chose to go with McCain. And then he picked a woman, so now I’m set. I’ve got McCain and a woman. It couldn’t have worked out better for me.

How the GOP Is Counting on Hurricane Gustav for an Image Makeover
“To understand why the GOP has been so quick to cover all its bases on the current hurricane, we should consider the tremendous fallout that Hurricane Katrina had on the Bush presidency. The 2005 storm had a devastating political impact on George W. Bush and the Republican brand because it showed the American public what happens when a political party believes at its core that government should not be taken seriously.”

Lou, I am an Independent for a reason. Neither party speaks to me on all of my issues. I was going to vote for Hillary because she’s a woman, and that’s real change. But, since the Dems treated her and Geraldine Ferraro so miserably during Hillary’s campaign, I have chosen to vote Republican. It just so happens John Mccain picked a woman VP. But don’t worry, Lou, I’m from Delaware and all 3 of our electoral votes will go to Obama. It’s just going to feel really good to pull the lever for McCain. And I can always hope lots of other people feel like me.

Who was being educated, married, and holy washed by the good Rev. the hater Wright for 20 years, inspired to entitle his book after the Wright Sermons, called him an uncle whom he cannot disown just as he cannot disown his grand mother, and in the end, abandoned his Trinity after it is no long of use to him.

Who earmarked a cool $1 mil for the employer that raised his wife’s salary by 260% after he became the “honorable” freshman Senator from Illinois?

Posted by: d0 | September 1, 2008, 11:58 am 11:58 am

Hey d0,
I’ll post an accomplishment of Obama’s, you post one of McCains to match.
Here goes:
Ethics and Lobbying Reform
Throughout his political career, Barack Obama has been a leader in fighting for open and honest government. During his first year as an Illinois State Senator, he helped lead the fight to pass Illinois’ first ethics reform bill in 25 years. As a U.S. Senator, he has spearheaded the effort to clean up Washington in the wake of the Jack Abramoff scandal.
Senator Obama is one of the authors of the Honest Leadership and Open Government Act (S. 2180). The bill would lengthen the cooling off period to two years for lawmakers and staff who seek to become lobbyists, and it would require immediate disclosure as soon as any job negotiations begin. The bill would open conference committee meetings to the public and require that all bills be posted on the Internet for 24 hours before they can be voted on by the Senate. Finally, the bill would end all lobbyist-funded gifts, meals, and travel and strengthen the Senate office that monitors lobbyist disclosure forms.
Your turn.

GOP apologists,
Obama “lacks leadership skills” but he can successfully fill an arena with 80,000+ and even run the best political campaign we have seen in modern times.
While your friend John McCain struggles to fill a 10,000 capacity hall and has exhibited inconsistent themes throughout his campaign. First he was running on experience, then country first and now a reformer. His selection of Palin while good for the GOP base will certainly not bring in new voters.
By the way, he did not put country first by selecting a vp nominee who recently asked a reporter what vice presidents do. McCain obviously put politics first. Can you imagine Sarah Palin being C-in-C? Thats dreadful!

Lou,
If this is your #1 pathetic “accomplishment” from His Nothingness, you really need to learn more before you go into the booth.
It’s a bill the His Nothingness’s Lord Daddy Reid gave him to manage to boost his zero resume, a bill did not become law for technical reasons that was passed by more than 90 votes before Zero-bama came to being in the Senate. The Ethics bill has Zero things to do with Zero-bama, except that Reid needs more experienced law makers to tackle important legislation and to give a no-brainer to a freshman who would have accomplished nothing else if it was not supported, already, by 97-3 votes.

If any black people who are Democrats are making comments, please tell me who you would vote for: Would you vote for your fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton, or would you vote for Clarence Thomas?
Oh, I see….based on what these ignorant, non thinkers are saying, you would vote for a Clarence Thomas because he’s black, and you are black, even though you know his policies would go against what is in your best interest, huh?
Black people voting for Obama are voting for him because they believe in his politics. Put Clarence Thomas in Obama’s suit, and black folks will sit this election out, before voting for him because Clarence Thomas goes against the fiber of their own being.
Women voting for Palin because she is a woman, rather than her policies, are cutting off their nose to spite their face and are very vindictive.

Kitty and co,
It seems to me that the GOPs are not very creative. Sorry but I prefer the original artist not the person putting his name on someone else’s art work.
First they adopt Obama’s idea of diplomacy, then they adopt his idea of putting more brigades in Afghanistan, and now they’re trying to steal his message of Change.
This is completely insulting to think that America would fall for impostors. They would not have even considered a women on the ticket if they hadn’t notice the overwhelming support Hillary clinton got from us Dems. Why have the imposter when you can have the true genius.
Where would the imposter get his ideas if the Messiah was nowhere to be found? Perhaps Bush.
John Mccain wants to be president just for the sake of being president. His ideas are of the 20th century. The last time I checked we had moved to the 21st century.

In 1996 Bill Clinton got 84% of the black vote. Yet in 2008 primary, an unknown to ALL gets 90% of the black vote when up against a Clinton.
It does not take a rocket scientist to see that the black bloc voted for Obama, the Unkown, because of the color of his skin. Worse, and utterly despicable, was the use of racism against the Clintons to pull the black vote away from Hillary and toward Obama. This primary will go down in infamy in the history books.

In 2005, Senator Obama introduced the Lead Free Toys Act (S. 2048), requiring the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to ban any children’s product containing lead.
He also introduced the Healthy Communities Act (S. 2047) to identify and address problems in communities that are at high risk from environmental contaminants. In addition, recognizing the contribution of housing, parks, trails, roadways, and public transportation to healthy lifestyles, Senator Obama introduced the Healthy Places Act (S. 2506) to assess and support improvements to the built environment.
And there are more if you look.

I agree with that sentiment. When we look back at the history books, they will see the Obama campaign as a step back in race relations in the US. Constant race baiting will, eventually, see a backlash and old anger between the races will be reignited. We’re seeing it now.
And don’t be suprised to see more Americans demand an end to affirmative action based on race, rather than, say, income level.

This storm was downgraded from category 3 to category 2. If Obama/Biden can get our army of engineers to build the levees to withstand a category 5 Hurricane this would help the Louisana’s 2 million residents have more confidence when a serious hurricane comes in the future. It would also give the Nation more confidence as well. What do the army of engineers need? How long would it take?
Right now everyones focusing on the politicians reactions to Hurricane Gustav, everyone is reliving Hurricane Katrina. Obama moved fast to set up a donation section on his site, also to go on TV to reassure everyone from the area and get everyone thinking about mobilizing volunteers for a worse case scenario. Perhaps a plan to have the levees withstand a category 5 Hurricane? Could some of our engineers in the war zone return and help with this? As you can tell I not an expert so I don’t know the complex process all this would take. Obama/Biden coming up with a plan would give the nation confidence.

Put America first ….. what about during Katrina when he was eating Birthday cake with George Bush while people drowned ?.. Where was America then ?

The economy is getting better. But Obama NEEDS the economy to be bad, Obama needs the Iraq war to turn bad, Obama needs the people to suffer, he needs everything to be bad. Without it no one would have given this under unqualified guy the time of day. He is playing on the suffering of others so he can promote himself. We are getting out of Iraq without him, we are making head way in the economy, things are happening in spite of him and without him. He will not bring change..that is truly the sad part and millions will be disappointed. He is a Bush in Democrats clothing. Because he is black, no one will be allowed to challenge him and will be called racist..Biden will continue his sexist antics and the real change of Hillary Clinton will never take place. After Nov Hillary will be cast under the bus..no longer a need for her. It will be a sad day for all Americans should the medicine sideshow take office.

Lou,
I am not necessarily a McCain supporter and I do not need to defend his record which is strong and full of substance.
I am simply against a God of Nothingness.

d0,
I don’t recall you asking any questions. I must have missed them, but you can ask them again if you like.
And here’s some further reading for you:
Senator Obama introduced the Attacking Viral Influenza Across Nations Act (S. 969), which calls for collaboration and cooperation at the state, national, and international level to ensure preparedness in the event of pandemic influenza. Such preparedness includes the procurement of antivirals, development of effective vaccines, and improvement of the public health infrastructure and medical surge capacity in hospitals.
Senator Obama also worked to push $7.9 billion through the Senate to help the U.S. prepare for the possibility of an avian flu pandemic.

d0,
Sorry if I don’t buy your argument that McCain is of substance and Obama nothingness.
Just saying so doesn’t cut it.

What’s very troubling is how Obama didn’t bother to visit his own mother as she died of ovarian cancer. Of course he was starting his first campaign for political office so that took precedence.

Asia2PA,
Just wondering where you got the story of Obama not visiting his mother.

The chauvinistic approach to the primary by the Democrats and the press left such a bitter taste in my mouth,
I’m casting my vote Republican. Obama is inexperienced and is more concerned about being a movie star than a leader. The money spent on his stage performance did not help middle America.
With all the unaccounted bundeled money he raised from the media and God knows who else, he could help alot of families.

No mention of the fact that Obama called for people to evacuate two days ago yesterday. Even called into some of the local radio stations. He asked his supporters to donate to red cross and for volunteers to help if necessary after the hurricane.
Obama choose not to fly to gulf for a photo op.

Dragonfly777 asks: what about during Katrina when he was eating Birthday cake with George Bush while people drowned ?.. Where was America then ?
As someone pointed out earlier, McCain did not oversee FEMA…he was not aware of the tragic events or the governments state of unpreparedness to deal with such an emergency. HINDSIGHT IS 20/20…and with McCain in office, we can be assured this would never happen to another American city or state again.

Hey trettion,
At least He CAN say POW. You coward…bet you never served…how dare you stand there and judge a man’s service to his Country. He earned the right -you hear me? EARNED the privilege – something I’m sure you know absolutely nothing about…so I’m told if you haven’t something true to say about someone, then hush your mouth.

Asia2PA,
Granted, he wasn’t there at her death, but you shouldn’t try to apply your own reasons as to why he wasn’t. His mother was not the typical stay at home mom. As a matter of fact, she was quite a successful and accomplished woman:
“In 1992, Obama’s mother finally finished her Ph.D. dissertation, which she had worked on, between jobs, for almost two decades. The thesis is 1,000 pages, a meticulous analysis of peasant blacksmithing in Indonesia. The glossary, which she describes as “far from complete,” is 24 pages. She dedicated the tome to her mother; to Dewey, her adviser; “and to Barack and Maya, who seldom complained when their mother was in the field.”
From what I’ve read about Obama’s feelings for his mother, it’s hard to believe, had he known she was dying, that he would not have been there.

every body’s talking about this thang called experience they ask? “is he experienced”,”has he ever been experienced” “well,we know what experience is and he doesn’t have it and we can prove it to you” and they begin parroting talking points spoon fed to them by the various right wing babbling head cases who uses their mediums to push divisive agendas that fuel mistrust,hatred and prejudices while becoming multi-millionaires by preying on and exploiting the genuine concerns of much of the public but after listening to their sing along mindless gibberish it becomes obvious to all whose i.q is higher then that of a moron that the vast majority of them are freaking clueless about not only what qualifies as experience but that experience alone isnot a qualifier or an indicator for being president {i.e.YOU KNOW WHO}like my great grand pappy always said “fool em once shame on you”fool em twice and they must be republicans” so to those who pin their votes based on experience i say experience without good judgment is a recipe for disaster{i.e.YOU KNOW WHO&THE LAST EIGHT YRS}

Obama is experienced? He’s never run a business, a city or a state. He’s one of 99 voices. Period.
I find it interesting that Democrats (male, most of the voices) are asking if Palin experienced enough.
They don’t seem to see the hypocrisy –
Their inexperienced guy is #1 on the ticket and is qualified.
Republicans less experienced women is the #2 on the ticket and she’s not qualified.
