Oh, That Joe! (No. 9 in a Series) – Wherein Jill Biden and John McCain Dance Drunkenly on a Tabletop in Greece

Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., likes to tell crowds that he and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., are friends.

In a packed gymnasium at Maple Point Middle School in Langhorne, Pa., this afternoon, before a receptive crowd, Biden explained just how close they are.

"John McCain is my friend," said the loquacious Blue Hen. "I admire John McCain. I know of no man or woman I have ever met that has more personal courage than John McCain. We have been friends for over 33 years. We have traveled together. When John was Navy liaison he staffed me for three or four years everywhere I traveled in the world.

"Jill and John are good friends," Biden said, referring to his wife Dr. Jill Biden, who had just introduced him. "Matter of fact there’s a best-selling book written about us called The Nightingale’s Song about John and some of his graduating class from Annapolis that references Jill and John in the book as good buddies.

"She doesn’t like the reference,’" Biden added, "but John, John’s a great guy. John was staffing me in Greece. I was meeting with the Prime Minister Papandreou and we were supposed to go to this fancy dinner and Jill said ‘Do we have to go to this dinner?’ And John said, ‘No, no, no I know this great place for dinner.’

"And there was a place literally down on the docks, where Zorba lived I think, and so I had to go to the fancy thing and I come back down and I find it, and we’re wandering through these alleys on the dock — you’re gonna get very angry at this Jill — but I walk around the corner and there’s these cement tables like down at the shore you know, the cement base ,the cement table, and I walk in and Jill and John are standing up on the table drinking ouzo dancing with one another, and I’m thinking, ‘I’ve never trusted John since then, Jillie.’

"But he’s a great guy," Biden said, "and if John called me today and said ‘Joe -,’ like when they went after John McCain, when Bush went after him in South Carolina with the scurrilous comments they made about his character, I called him and said, ‘John, where do you want me? I’m an Al Gore man but where do you want me? I will show up anywhere in America to testify to the kind of man you are.’ And he is a good man, he is a good man."

It’s a great story, but who is he campaigning for? He talks about his fondness for McCain way too much.

So Joe is for McCain! Good O’l Joe. We knew you would come out of the haze.

And with his usual grace McCain passed on the offer of “help” from Joe.

Appears that Biden likes Mccain as a friend but doesn’t like his policies.
It’s kind of like Ted Kennedy and Orrin Hatch are great friends but their policy positions are totally opposite.

I have to say as someone who went to JohnMccain events (he was great in Exeter NH Town hall once… really his best performance last year I think)
problem is he thinks (wrongly) in his heart of hearts like a lot of aging men… military is the only solution. The subtlety goes
he seems like a great guy to have a beer with but way too aggressive and angry in his thought process…
and as a guy who spent all his life trying to live up to his dad and granddad…he sold his soul to the right wing to achieve that last goal that would make his dad and mom proud.
You can see the 12 year old boy in the man who is grasping at the last opportunity to achieve a dream
problem is at any cost.

I like Joe too and find him very handsome and plesant. I am glad Obama picked him so we get to see him around. I never understood before why he never made it further through the primaries. I guess it’s because he went home every night and refused to personally meet with lobbyist. Oh my, to break the hold of those money guys.
McCain has no intention of making any such change..He go 100 of them in his club van.

Why my innocent earlier post was removed is questionable…I said I love Joe Biden and wish he was at the top of his party’s ticket, in case of default Presidency. He has more in common with John McCain than the Rootless Cosmopolitan. I loved Hill, like Joe, but could never vote for BO…and have no problem voting for Biden’s good friend John McCain. Even Joe wanted to run with him at one point.
Didn’t Biden say “Obama is good looking, clean and articulate for an African American….storytale, man”…also, I think we have tape on him stating that Obama not qualified to be Prez (Stephanopolis asked him at a debate)….love that Joe!

Samantha – I loved your post. And I loved this Biden story. You CAN disagree and still admire, respect, even like eachother and it is actually a time-honored tradition in old-time politics (certain famous stories not withstanding). Holding grudges doesn’t help a politician in the long run. Hate-filled responses and attacks are not necessary, except in the blogosphere apparently.

Hee, he’s hilarious. Reminds me of all my Irish uncles, that same sense of honor. No matter how much you personally disagree with a man, if he’s being unfairly attacked, you stand with him. Call it what you like, but I just don’t think this plays badly.
Especially compared with Palin’s casual ability to sneer at a man she does not know and really doesn’t have the standing to be snide about. I mean, I’ve had a VP who looks down on the plebes for the past 8 years. I’m really not interested in a new one who thinks that community organizing is something to be mocked. What a jerk.

Senator McCain has friends going back to elementary school. He has his good Senator buddies, his family’s long service of country, his band of brothers who are real American heros, and even Joe and Jill Biden.
Obama has…let me see…I’ll find one friend…well, I can’t find anybody who can testify to Obama’s character and upbringing. He threw them all under the bus or they are in jail. They all hate America.
Oh yes, now he’s dragging Hillary Clinton and a bunch of other women to give him what he doesn’t have; character…they don’t even know him. Hiding under Hillary’s skirt again Mr. Obama?

Well, no one can claim the Obama/Biden team is stooping to character assassination of John McCain…refreshing really. I too like the man McCain, and respect him as a veteran; however, I detest his policies and his most recent display of “judgment”. Perfectly OK to separate the person from the policies. I will vote for the policies…issues are what matter!

By the way,
A good part of this rancor we’re trying to get over isn’t because of politicians who are there for themselves. It’s because in the 90′s Mr. Gingrich decided it was the best political strategy for his party.

Loved Hill, like Biden will vote McCain/Palin, as I cannot bear the thought of BO for Prez. I really would like him to go back and work more than 143 days in Senate, and really serve his country in some way….as McCain said “serve a greater purpose than oneself”. DOES THE EGO ONE GET THAT?

Posted by: Debra | September 6, 2008, 12:19 am 12:19 am

Biden is for McCain it is obvious and he is smart to support him and defend his character. I also liked how he defended Palin several times. Obama, on the other hand, has shown no integrity what so ever. McCain/Palin only stated what Biden and Hillary stated about Obama, in verbatim, and engaged in battle that Obama himself has started. First he tried to pull the race card on McCain, but failed miserably when Americans know that McCain has a minority child. Everything is a hit and miss with this guy and the heat in kitchen is just to hot for him to handle. Plus, why would Biden really stand beside a man that he once called inexperienced??? Obama is trusting the wrong man as his VP. He should have chosen someone else.

Posted by: NEXT | September 6, 2008, 12:20 am 12:20 am

That’s a great story. I think it is important for us to remember that this is all politics.
I think people at home get kind of caught up in the jeering… but at the end of the day.
Sure, there are issues that effect us. But the politicians really think it is all some kind of theatre. Until we actually elect people who have ordinary experience… that’s all we’ll have.
But look, even the novices, Palin and Obama, have gotten their noses dirty. You have to if you want to get in their game. That’s America.
And, though I really would like to see my neighbors catch a break on healthcare. And I hate the stupid war in Iraq. And I wish that all these busybodies would just leave gay people alone. I don’t really get too bent out of shape when some nut votes for a Republican… because what do you expect?
It’s all a bunch of theatre. Like pro-wrestling, only fake.

Biden is committed to his party. The reason he won’t stoop to McCain’s level is because McCain is married to the same mud-slinging, fact twisting tactics that put Bush back in office in 2004
To “go there” means playing into his hands and giving up the election. It’s all the GOP is capable of and they’re good at it.
I say they (Obama and Biden) stay classy, and stick to the issues. That’s honestly all I care about, and it’s all you should, too.

And if you were to travel, unlike most of the fear parrots, you would see that people

Biden is so smart the left doesn’t deserve him. He knows that McCain isn’t Bush, and that if the Democrats treat McCain with the same demonic hatred the left holds for Bush, they will alienate a lot of independents. It’s amazing that Biden was picked over others including Hillary. Was Obama’s ego too big to choose a woman who won 18 million votes? Do you all remember that he played Jay Z’s “99 problems” as his victory song in Iowa where lyrics go, “I’ve got 99 problems but a B**** isn’t one of them.” Check out the Huff Post for full story on that. That says it all.
He’s chosen this joker–a two time losing presidential candidate–to run with. Visually, it looks like Obama is going toward the past and McCain is headed into the future with an energetic woman. What happened to change? Biden has been in office longer than McCain!
My theory: it was an “insider” pick. Pelosi or Dean made it for him. Obama is a puppet of the party. The DNC doesn’t want Obama. They want power…power they can get by controlling a novice. It’s the liberal version of Bush/Cheney.

If the quote in the article was all Biden said, I can see why Obama supporters would be mad at him. However, I saw his speech on C-Span yesterday and he went on to say a lot more. After praising Mc Cain the man, Biden went on to say how much he and McCain disagree on issues, and that even while travelling together, they would get into big arguments about some of those issues. He praised the man, not the man’s policies. I see nothing wrong with that.

This election isn’t about personalities or who can attack whom best. It’s about big problems that require us getting out of this smear at all costs way of electing the best people.
I’ve listened to McCain/Palin twice today trying to be open minded. Their entire focus is on a war 35 years ago or a war today or what war next. One mention of *I know times are tough* and then back to war.
