On Economic Bailout, Biden Brags on Obama & Blasts McCain

ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe Reports: While Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain return to Washington to meet with President Bush about an economic rescue plan, Sen. Joe Biden, campaigning in Pennsylvania Thursday, argued that Obama had shown leadership on the issue while McCain had "lurched so rapidly from one fundamental position to another."

"Yesterday Barack Obama – and this is the tradition of this guy, this is how he works – in the midst of all this political blather that’s going on, all the negative ads being heaped upon him, what did he do?" Biden asked at a rally in Greensburg.

"He reached out. He picked up the phone and he called John McCain and he said, ‘We should put aside the politics for the day and we should see if we can agree jointly, we can agree jointly on the basic elements of what needs to be in this package, this rescue package so that not only Wall Street doesn’t fail, but Main Street doesn’t get crushed in the avalanche when it falls’. He showed leadership. He showed leadership by suggesting that we come together."

"In a closely contested presidential election," continued Biden, "Barack Obama stepped up to say, ‘John, this is too important. This is too important. It’s essential we show unity.’ That’s how you change the tone in Washington. That’s really leadership."

At the same time, the Democratic vice-presidential candidate continued to blast McCain for what he calls the Republican’s "economic epiphany" last week, when McCain said "the fundamentals of the economy are strong" and then later said "the economy is in crisis."

"You can’t be president of the United States of America and lurch so rapidly from one fundamental position to another, seeing sunlight and then seeing nothing but darkness all in a matter of two hours," Biden said, accusing McCain of flip-flopping with his views on the nation’s financial stability.

"Ladies and gentlemen, you can’t gain the confidence of the nation and you can’t gain the confidence of the world when in fact you are not rooted and know exactly what you think.”

When the two candidates converge at the White House, Biden said he knows what Bush should expect to hear from Obama.

"We cannot and we will not simply bail out Wall Street without helping the millions of innocent homeowners who are struggling just to stay in their homes," said the Delaware lawmaker. "If Wall Street is going to get this help, Main Street, Main Street has to get the help as well.”

Senator Biden (D-MNBA) is the last guy who should be talking about homeowners. How much did his son get from the bank again?

What a joke Biden is. Obama’s leadership on possibly the worst financial crisis in 100 years and maybe ever and Obama says “call me if you need me”. My word he is a U.S. Senator and listening to his campaign has this insight into everything. Consistent with his past history he is awol-he voted present in the Illinois legislature; he votes present in the U.S. Senate; he chairs a committee in the U.S. Senate that has never met. No wander he never joined the military as he would be locked up for being awol. He is no hero; he is no leader; he is simply that editor in chief of the law review that never once authored an article.

I don’t feel the need to bail out main street. If you took on a loan you can’t afford, if you took on a stupid loan, you deserve what you get. Now if you are losing your house because you lost your job, different story.

Facts: Bush/Republicans tried to reign in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac five years ago. They proposed regulatory and administrative oversight of both. Who opposed this and defeated it-the DEMOCRATS led by Nancy Peloski; Charlie Rangel; Joe Biden; Christopher Dodds. Why-because they wanted to continue a mortgage program for people who could not afford a mortgage. And who is on Obama’s economic staff but two of the executives of both of these companies. My God how stupid do these people think Americans are?

The McCain/Palin campaign is such a joke. You have McCain wanting to postpone the debate and you have Palin who gave one of the worst interviews that I have seen in a long time. You also have Palin being prayed over for witchcraft and by the way, if this were Obama/Biden, this video would be in a continuous loop on every new organization. This is really sad that the McCain/Palin campaign would do anything to try to win an election.

Credit Where Credit Isn’t Due: McCain and Bush’s Kabuki Theatre
Now we know why McCain hired the Bush contingent.
It emerged in the White House briefing today that McCain called Bush and asked him to initiate a meeting today at 4 pm at the White House, putatively for him to “deal with” the crisis.
That is, McCain asked Bush to help him create an trifecta: To try to lend some credence to McCain’s desperate assertion that a suspension of his campaign is necessary, in effect either avoiding a debate in which he would face critical questions about his stance on the economy or marching in claiming “victory”; attempting to co opt the financial crisis thereby trying to put an end to his plummeting in the polls created by his flailing positions on the economy–perhaps best reflected by his statement days ago that the “fundamentals of the economy are strong”; and perhaps buying more time for Sarah Palin after her embarrassing photo op at the UN yesterday, by moving her debate forward as well.
Here’s how it happened, according to Q and A at the WHB:
McCain emailed Bush asking for the 4 P.M. meeting. Now, one reasonably might ask, why is today such a necessity for McCain, if his interest is solely the national good?
Because it is before the debate. McCain hopes to stage a meeting at the White House, thereby, with Bush’s cooperation, lending plausibility to his claim to need to suspend his campaign. Then, if Republicans, in their own electoral interest, can be persuaded to come to agreement, before the debate, he would claim–in an act of utter stage management–to have “resolved” the crisis. Thereby hoping to take the heat off on his past careening stances and sliding polls and staunch the bleeding on the polls–before the debate.
This is Kabuki Theatre masquerading as substance–no different than what we saw at the U.N. yesterday.
It is utterly stage managed, utterly cynical, and utterly unrelated to the substantive deliberation necessary to actually resolve these matters on the merits and for our nation’s future, rather than for short-term and desperate political advantage.
These occurrences are equally important for what they indicate about McCain’s governing style as they are for their impact upon democratic process: impulsive acts that rely on drama and theatrical posture rather than substantive reasoning and long-term deliberation; a strong willingness to sacrifice substantive reasoning, deliberative process, and even prior structures and agreements to immediate political need; an attempt to reach outcomes through last minute stage management rather than substantive argument.
These should create deep concern for anyone who wishes for a change in governmental process from the past eight years.
We have an economy, rather than a campaign, to rescue. Putting nation before politics means putting all attempts to resolve it before political attempts to co opt it–and to move towards one’s commitments, rather than towards a more immediate and short-term salvation.

Obama acted Presidential. McCain acted like someone trying to move up in the polls. You don’t have to be a veteran to understand how the economy works. He was editor of one of the most influential legal publications in the world and a professor at one of the most prestigious universities in the world. You don’t get either position without having the ability to handle multiple crisis or work effectively across a wide swath of ethnic, social and economic levels. John obviously doesn’t have a clue what an editor does, or else he wouldn’t have rediculed Obama for “never once authoring and article.” Having been both an editor and an author, I can tell you that authoring is the easy part.
McCain suspended his campaign because he doesn’t have someone he can rely on in times of crisis. Palin is a bubblehead (the Couric interview shows that). Obama called him first about a joint statement. His reply was a “Hail Mary” to try to restart his faltering campaign.
McCain, the veteran, voted against every bill to support veterans, including the Veteran Bill of Rights. Only after he was thoroughly embarassed by fellow veterans (and wanted their vote) did he jump on the VBR bandwagon. McCain is a flip-flopper and we need a President.

Schmegal from Lord of the Rings. Constantly battling himself: trying to convince himself and the public that he is good in order to get close enough to the ring to steal it for himself. Not to mention that the republic party’s rich free trade constituents are calling members of congress trying to block this bailout. Besides that….. HELLO, how come it seems that every time a republic policy fiasco blows up all of a sudden they want to be bi-partisan? More like republic bi-polarism. Hey, I know! Let’s save the countries ass because the republic party has destroyed it. Then we’ll let them take a victory lap for saving the day! Meanwhile we can change from capitalism to socialism without anyone noticing. BRILLIANT!

This incompetent McCaine, lurching from one extreme to another and trying to one-upmanship Obama after Obama called on him to act together to deal with the economic package in the congress.
McCaine has demonstrated time and time again that he does not have the temperment or judgement to be president and further more he does not understand how to make executive decisions. He makes impulsive kneejerk decisions that are not becoming of a leader of any ilk much less the most powerful country in the world.
His election to be president will be a dangerous time for the world.
Obama has demonstrated the demeanor, good judgement and calm thoughtful intelligent capacity to be President and commander in chief and if it weren’t for the closet racists this election would be a landslide.

The screw ups in Congress? They colossally failed to responsibly conduct their businesses, and how it’s going to blow back on us. And of course, this worry is compounded by intentionally complex and obfuscatory explanations and justifications by the Big Billionaire Boiz about how this happened and why we should save them. But, more importantly, the worry is exacerbated by an UNCONSCIONABLE lack of leadership on the part of our, um, LEADERS.
Harry and Nancy? No word from them. Barack? He’s still talking to himself in the mirror down in Clearwater, getting all ready for his BIG NIGHT tomorrow. He’s still trying to catch his plane back to Washington after George Freaking Bush nationally humiliated him by calling him to get his butt back to work. The DONC? Oh, please.
Nope, looks like the burden of leadership in the Democratic Party is once again being taken up by Hillary Clinton. The ONLY Democrat with national stature and a national constituency who has stood up and delivered a PLAN and a SOLUTION. And, even more importantly, the ONLY Democrat who remains committed to FIGHTING for protections for middle and working-class Americans in the Bailout for Billionaires. Barack Obama, before even sitting down at the negotiating table, was savvy enough to give away the store right up front. He has already said he would be willing to give up homeowner protections in the interest of getting a deal done. Inspired yet?
Obama’s routine of ducking, postponing, hiding, and just plain MISSING IT is too discouraging to repeat here.
I’d rather listen to Hillary, the only national Democratic leader in Washington right now.

Obama didn’t do “town halls” with McCain..not DEBATES. Let’s get the facts straight. Since it has been confirmed that McCain has been known to “pre-ticket” his town halls with GOP supporters…that would hardly be an unbiased town hall setting would it?
Also…note…congress has stated this whole deal took place without McCain’s help…the chairman committee of the banking committee said they had received numerous phone calls from Obama over the last few days checking progress but NONE from McCain..mCcain said yesterday he hadn’t even read the bill. Also…the “joint statement” issues by the candidates sounded like it came out of Obama’s mouth…in addition the final section of the “joint Statement” was Obama’s only…and it outlined the 6 point plan he put forth (almost a week ago) with regards to the bailout – WHO’S THE LEADER???

Nay nay stevie it is you who lie!
“In light of the collapse of Fannie and Freddie, both John McCain and Barack Obama now criticize the risk-tolerant regulatory regime that produced the current crisis. But Sen. McCain’s criticisms are at least credible, since he has been pointing to systemic risks in the mortgage market and trying to do something about them for years.
In contrast, Sen. Obama’s conversion as a financial reformer marks a reversal from his actions in previous years, when he did nothing to disturb the status quo….All the Republicans on the Committee supported the bill, and all the Democrats voted against it. Mr. McCain endorsed the legislation in a speech on the Senate floor. Mr. Obama, like all other Democrats, remained silent….If the Democrats had let the 2005 legislation come to a vote, the huge growth in the sub prime and Alt-A loan portfolios of Fannie and Freddie could not have occurred, and the scale of the financial meltdown would have been substantially less. The same politicians who today decry the lack of intervention to stop excess risk taking in 2005-2006 were the ones who blocked the only legislative effort that could have stopped it.

To Molly and stuttering john. This was nothing more than a political stunt by McCain. He wasn’t even in the same room where the deal was finally reached today after several days of negotiations. He’s not on that committee so he would not have been allowed in that meeting. Don’t you people get it? He and Senator Obama would not have been needed unless the votes were going to be close. That was never the case. Your boy’s been getting hammererd in the press over the last 2 weeks because he’s shown himself to be the doddering old man that he is.

Hey, if Sarah Palin were anything more than a joke, she could step in and campaign for John McCain, while he is busy being indispensible in Washington, and exploiting the situation on Wall Street.
I know the real reason why Sarah couldn’t come up with any examples for Katie Couric of McCain leading the charge to slap some regulations on the financial district in the last 26 years – it was because he was too busy leading the charge to deregulate everything! Now he thinks he is a White Knight! Ain’t dementia wonderful?
Speaking of dementia, his pick for VP, Palin, was pathetic in her interview with Katie Couric last night. If she can’t come out of hiding and face the scrutiny like other politicians then she had better go back to Alaska and shoot hapless wolves from airplanes, where she can safely be “Sarah Baracuda”.
Good grief, if she is that petrified to do a relatively short interview with Katie, then what will she do in a lengthy debate with Joe Biden – wet herself?

As a matter of fact, I have had to spend 8 years having my intelligence insulted, and now that the republicans house of cards has fallen, it is time to kick them while they are down. They are the one’s who pick this circus to represent them, so if they don’t like the insults, it’s just too bad. BEsides, why lie if you don’t like being called a lier?

This bail out isn’t going to solve the basic problems with the economy. People just don’t have the money after paying for continuing increases in necessities like gasoline, food and health insurance…living paycheck to paycheck just to pay their bills… People that were making good salaries before the Bush administration took over.
If they want to spend that kind of money, then set up a fund like FEMA
1. Businesses could apply for low interest loans from the fund instead of a financial fat cat. That clears up Bush’s argument about ‘credit freeze’. I saw a lot of banking commercials after the speech; credit doesn’t seem to be a problem.
2. Allow retirement funds to buy Treasury bonds at the same interest rate they were getting in the stock market. Retirement funds should not be in the stock market at all! That clears up Bush’s argument about retirement funds.
3. And for the homeowners who are defaulting…for those who had unforeseen occurrences like cancer or lost their job due to ‘downsizing’, grant them another loan on a different house they can afford, not keep their current homes.
The rest–I think the number of reported foreclosures is bogus. People are taking bankruptcy not due to their home mortgage, but the economy. The change in the bankruptcy laws came down on ordinary people, not the fat cats who risk their money (which is really someone else’s money) and expect to still make their outrageous bonuses and salaries. I don’t know of anyone who is foreclosing. I think this is just another excuse (like gas prices) to blame it on ‘the people’ instead of those making millions.
Let the ‘market’ take care of the financial institutions. There is a reason they call it, ‘playing’ the stock market. Investors, foreign or not, knew they were taking a risk.
Nothing is guaranteed except death and taxes. AND those taxes shouldn’t be going to a fat cat.

HP Boston,
Obama did not lead the deregulation that led to the failure of the Savings and Loans.
It was McCain.
Ask McCain about Charles Keating if you need him to have a heart attack. BTW, that might be a good excuse for him to escape the debate tomorrow. Now you know how the Repugs can save face.
Secondly Phil “Americans Are Whiners In A Mental Recession” Gramm with his buddy McCain led the deregulation of the Banking and Securities industry and caused the current crisis.
So once again Repugs, stop lieing. Have you no shame?

I swear all you people are ignorant fools out there. Did anybody else notice the complete bias on the side of Obama/Biden by ABC? Two days ago, McCain said he was suspending his campaign to go back to Washington to work on this bill. What did Obama do? He mocked McCain and said the debate was more important. It was McCain who called Obama to ask if he would head back to Washington with him. But all you retards out there only want to hear your own side of the story. There was no reference to anything out of the McCain camp about what Biden said. Read any reputable paper and there will be facts and sources from both sides of the issue. Here is a letter to the editor in the Richmond Times Dispatch dated July 7, 2008:
http://www.inrich.com/cva/ric/search.apx.-content-articles-RTD-2008-07-07-0033.html
Beware Charismatic Men Who Preach ‘Change’
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
Each year I get to celebrate Independence Day twice. On June 30 I celebrate my independence day and on July 4 I celebrate America’s. This year is special, because it marks the 40th anniversary of my independence.
On June 30, 1968, I escaped Communist Cuba and a few months later I was in the United States to stay. That I happened to arrive in Richmond on Thanksgiving Day is just part of the story, but I digress.
I’ve thought a lot about the anniversary this year. The election-year rhetoric has made me think a lot about Cuba and what transpired there. In the late 1950s, most Cubans thought Cuba needed a change, and they were right. So when a young leader came along, every Cuban was at least receptive.
When the young leader spoke eloquently and passionately and denounced the old system, the press fell in love with him. They never questioned who his friends were or what he really believed in. When he said he would help the farmers and the poor and bring free medical care and education to all, everyone followed. When he said he would bring justice and equality to all, everyone said “Praise the Lord.” And when the young leader said, “I will be for change and I’ll bring you change,” everyone yelled, “Viva Fidel!”
But nobody asked about the change, so by the time the executioner’s guns went silent the people’s guns had been taken away. By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry, and oppressed. By the time everyone received their free education it was worth nothing. By the time the press noticed, it was too late, because they were now working for him. By the time the change was finally implemented Cuba had been knocked down a couple of notches to Third-World status. By the time the change was over more than a million people had taken to boats, rafts, and inner tubes. You can call those who made it ashore anywhere else in the world the most fortunate Cubans. And now I’m back to the beginning of my story.
Luckily, we would never fall in America for a young leader who promised change without asking, what change? How will you carry it out? What will it cost America?
Would we?
Manuel Alvarez Jr. Sandy Hook.

ok lets talk about today
lets see, this year obama talked about the impending doom on wallstreet (not 3yars ago)
he has issued several bills through the banking committee…
mccain has issued zero
obama has shown up to congress to cast votes for important bills in teh last 6 months, mccain has not
well… until today.. but then again nothing was voted on, and he wasnt a part of any of the talks, only the photo op with the president where he takes credit for doign something he had nothing to do with
then theres the phone call yesterday from obama saying we need to figure out a way to come together help members of congress, and coming out separate wouldnt be any good, we should issue a joint statement since the basic 5 principals we have outlined we agree on 4 of them
(the only one mccain doesnt have is to help tax payers keep their homes if the economy totally tanks)
he figured that since their proposals were fairly similar they could really help push the bill along
mccain calls back says ok lets do it
then he goes on tv and suspends his campaign and acts like he came up with it
then says hes flying back to DC to save the day
and spends the night in new york… and most of the day..
when did he get to DC today? oh… somewhere around 11
how many times has he called senator Dodd the man who is the lead on this bailout?
zero times
he hasnt even contacted senator dodd
obama sure has
who had a strong steady hand all last week?
oh… it surely wasnt mccain, he spent every day last week fumbling from one message to another, from one misstatement to the next… his proposals were bogus, out of touch
the only thing he could think to do was ratchet up the negative ads and try to change from the economy to anything else

McCain was exonerated (cleared) of improper behavior in this instance and because of the experience he established the McCain-Feingold Act in 2002 which was based on reforming campaign finance. McCain talks to Obama on the phone and agrees to do a joint statement and then minutes later announces he’s suspending his campaing “and calls on Obama to do the same” What a back stabbing weasel. I’m sorry, but this is America and we AMERICANS demand to see our candidates debate. This is OUR election. McCain, if he wants to run for this office is obligated to debate. He doesn’t just get to ask for a time-out because he’s getting clobbered in the polls and news reports are coming out saying his campaign manager was a lobbyist for Freddie Mac. McCain is a coward, a liar, and utterly incompetent. He has NO role to play in the senate negoations other than to show leadership and press his views which he can do much better at a debate. He is just grandstanding and looking for a photo op.

whens mccain suspending his campaign again?
he seems to forgot that for all his theatrics to shut down his campaign
mccain is losing his mind

Dana: Getting major problems that could negatively effect Americans for years is more important than a debate. If you want to know the true information on the candidates look at their voting records. Here is website for you:
http://www.votesmart.org
You find out more about a candidate, their policies, and what they truly think from their voting record than any debate.
Also McCain asked for several debates and Obama asked for the minimum and for the debates to happen the last month before the election. Obama got his wish. Well I would rather the candidates work to fix the financial mess than to accede to Obama’s demands again.

McCain isn’t doing ‘his job.’ He has no position on the committees negotiating this stuff. He has the worst voting record in the Senate — missing more votes even than a senator who has been hospitalized for months after a stroke. There was a general agreement on the Hill over the bailout, then the GOP backed out in order to buy time to try to give McCain some sort of “role” in the process. He doesn’t have the national interest at heart — he’s engaged in a phony plow to get attention while his VP candidate is making a fool of herself in interviews with Katie Couric.
And as for “suspending” his campaign: his ads are still running; his surrogates went on Fox today five or six times. I mean, how gullible are you folks?
Maybe I shouldn’t ask that given that there are people who watched the Palin interviews and thought she did a great job.

Posted by: reader | September 25, 2008, 5:18 pm 5:18 pm

McCain wanting to postpone the debates is a clear political stunt. Nothing more nothing less. If you think otherwise your wrong.
He does not want to debate obama on the economy because he simply doesnt have the expertise.
Look at the polls. Most americans think Obama is better suited to handle the economy.
Out of desperation McCain suggests cancelling them.
You republican trolls need to face reality.

Posted by: Stan | September 25, 2008, 5:19 pm 5:19 pm

Someone, anyone, please tell me where is the candidate who is saying NO bailouts for anyone?
I want to vote for that person.

Posted by: Fed Up With It All | September 25, 2008, 5:20 pm 5:20 pm

Stan: Obama is in a bit of a jam right now. Most of his goals can only be reached by further taxation. Obama himself said if the economy got worse he would have to hold off on his tax plan. Well, the economy got worse. It’s pretty sad when the very foundation of your plan is unachievable.
Here is another fact for you. Voters say that while they are more likely to vote Democrat for Congress, they rate Obama as more of a talker than a doer by 20 points and rate McCain the opposite by 15 and, by nine points, they think the Republican ticket has the better judgment than the Democratic nominees.

Posted by: Mick | September 25, 2008, 5:24 pm 5:24 pm

Fed up with it all: I wish that there did not have to be a bailout. Unfortunately if a bailout does not occur this country could easily enter into a depression ala 1930s. If these companies fail, workers will become unemployed and go on welfare. More investment will flee the country leaving everyone (families, businesses of all sizes, and the government) without funds/credit. There is no good short-term fix for this. I wish there was.

mccain had to suspend his campaign because he didnt want to talk about hsi campaign manager being on the freddie and fannie payroll
after repeatedly trying to tie obama to the two establishments… it was mccain all along stuck in the cookie jar
he also ahd ot do a katie couric interview to pull some of the punch away from palins terrible interview

If you truly cared about the payroll of Fannie and Freddie then this fact would have you running from Obama faster than anything. hat would be over $250,000. Obama was #2 in getting contributions from Fannie and Freddie. #1 was Obama’s economic adviser. McCain got about $60,000 from Fanny and Freddy, not even half what Obama got.

Wasn’t Biden in the senate during Carter’s administration? This is when inflation went to 20% and many farmers went broke right after Reagan became the president? And now he wants us to believe that he can handle the situation today better than McCain?

Biden is so smart. It’s good to see a white politician who is so enlightened and who sees that it is Barack Obama’s time to ascend to POTUS.
Only racists could support any other candidate. It didn’t work for that b09tch Clinton and it won’t work for that old cripple McCain. It’s over.
See the light before it’s too late. The Obama revolution is here!

Can anyone please tell me about Obama’s actual political accomplishments. I don’t care what committees he sat on or who he knows. I want to know what bills he has written and passed which turned out for the good of the American people. He spent millions of dollars in his section of Chicago, yet poverty and crime rates are as high as they ever were. Please tell me something that will make me feel better about Obama.

Bhrandon. Reality Check: Obama is not going to give tax cuts to the middle or lower class. There will be a net tax increase. Look at Obama’s stance on social security tax, capital gains tax, even the Bush tax cuts. While the Bush tax cuts are slanted in favor of the wealthy, it did provide tax cuts to middle and low income workers. Everyone’s taxes are going up with the next administration. I just want it to be fair, thoughtful, and leaves room for the economy to right itself. I also have no problem with people who make lots of money when they work hard for that money. I have qualms with those who leach of the system, rich or poor.

If two new polls are any indication, all the lying and adver-sleazements coming out of the McCain campaign could be starting to take a toll on his maverick straight-talker image.
Some advance numbers from a new New York Times poll tell the story.
Fifty-three percent say McCain is attacking the other candidate, versus only 35% who say that Obama is the attacker. Meanwhile. only 38% say McCain is explaining what he would do as president, while 56% say that about Obama.
Obama is also winning among independents on these questions: Forty-four percent of them say McCain is attacking Obama, while only 36% of them say Obama’s attacking.
Separately, Steve Benen has a nice catch from the new Washington Post poll. Obama has a double digit lead on the question of which candidate is seen as “more honest and trustworthy,” 47%-36%. Interestingly, this is quite a shift: The two candidates were roughly tied on this question in July and August.
The McCain campaign gambled that it could take the campaign to unprecedented heights of dishonesty, no matter what the press said about them, without it dragging him off the pedestal he’s been placed on by a decade or more of glowing media coverage. Maybe not so much. We’ll see.

Meet Barney Frank, One of the Architects of Fannie Mae’s Collapse
“These two entities — Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — are not facing any kind of financial crisis,” said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. “The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.”

NYT Revealed True Cause of Fannie Mae Crisis — In 1999!
In a move that could help increase home ownership rates among minorities and low-income consumers, the Fannie Mae Corporation is easing the credit requirements on loans that it will purchase from banks and other lenders.
The action, which will begin as a pilot program involving 24 banks in 15 markets — including the New York metropolitan region — will encourage those banks to extend home mortgages to individuals whose credit is generally not good enough to qualify for conventional loans. Fannie Mae officials say they hope to make it a nationwide program by next spring.
Fannie Mae, the nation’s biggest underwriter of home mortgages, has been under increasing pressure from the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans among low and moderate income people and felt pressure from stock holders to maintain its phenomenal growth in profits.
“Fannie Mae has expanded home ownership for millions of families in the 1990′s by reducing down payment requirements,” said Franklin D. Raines, Fannie Mae’s chairman and chief executive officer. “Yet there remain too many borrowers whose credit is just a notch below what our underwriting has required who have been relegated to paying significantly higher mortgage rates in the so-called subprime market.”

McCain Warned of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac Meltdown in 2006: Democrats Ignored Him
From the Congressional Record (May 25, 2006):
Mr. President, this week Fannie Mae’s regulator reported that the company’s quarterly reports of profit growth over the past few years were “illusions deliberately and systematically created” by the company’s senior management, which resulted in a $10.6 billion accounting scandal.
The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight’s report goes on to say that Fannie Mae employees deliberately and intentionally manipulated financial reports to hit earnings targets in order to trigger bonuses for senior executives. In the case of Franklin Raines, Fannie Mae’s former chief executive officer, OFHEO’s report shows that over half of Mr. Raines’ compensation for the 6 years through 2003 was directly tied to meeting earnings targets. The report of financial misconduct at Fannie Mae echoes the deeply troubling $5 billion profit restatement at Freddie Mac.
The OFHEO report also states that Fannie Mae used its political power to lobby Congress in an effort to interfere with the regulator’s examination of the company’s accounting problems. This report comes some weeks after Freddie Mac paid a record $3.8 million fine in a settlement with the Federal Election Commission and restated lobbying disclosure reports from 2004 to 2005. These are entities that have demonstrated over and over again that they are deeply in need of reform.
For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac–known as Government-sponsored entities or GSEs–and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEO’s report this week does nothing to ease these concerns. In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEO’s report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay.
I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.
I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation.
- Senator John McCain

I’m with Beck:
The statistics that I have seen indicate that 96% of the homeowners that are “struggling” overbought. I have a huge problem with the bail-out (keep these people in homes that I knew I couldn’t afford). I bought a house that was within my budget (what a novel idea)! Now, I’ve got to pay for my $100,000 home and the other fellow’s $450,000 home. Something is terriby wrong with this policy!
For Americans who need help because of work loss, health loss, personal catastrophes – that’s where I want my tax dollar to go!

Are you kidding me? All this thing is, is about politics. It doesn’t seem like it is about the people, and helping them at all.
This really is about Politicians and them saving face for the mess that they got this country into. If they really cared about the people, then they would have seen this coming and taken steps to prevent it to begin with, but did they? No. I really don’t care who you look at, there is not one Politician that took the initiative to prevent this, and why didn’t they? Bet no one can give me a real sound answer to that one?

McCain Runs And Hides From His Past:
John McCain running from the debate with Barack Obama is unacceptable, and COWARDICE! There are over 350 members of congress to deal with the US economic collapse. And even more capital hill aids, advisers, and experts to deal with the economic catastrophe created by the corrupt Bush McCain presidency and the past republican controlled congress.
Every American, and TRUE! patriot needs to demand that John McCain debate Barack Obama and tell the American people how he is going to fix this economic catastrophe that he (John McCain), Bush, and the past Republican controlled congress created.
Contact the news media. Your local papers. And demand that they hold John McCain accountable to debate Barack Obama. Contact all your friends and ask them to do the same. Call your senators, and congressmen and tell them that you expect “Let Them Eat Cake” John McCain to debate Barack Obama on this economic catastrophe that John McCain and “Let Them Eat Cake” BUSH! created.
It’s time to get ANGRY! America. Tell John McCain you want answers, and you want those answers NOW!
He can run. But he cant hide anymore.
What ever congress does to try and fix our stunning economic catastrophe needs to be done very carefully. Congress needs to take their time, and be sure of what they are doing. Whatever is done needs to be sharply focused at helping, and protecting the best interest of the ordinary Americans. In particular the vast American middle class. 700 billion dollars is a lot of the peoples money to spend to bail out a bunch of corrupt Bush loan sharks.
My fellow human beings, just as I warned you ahead of this catastrophic economic meltdown, I must now warn you that what is a head has the potential to be even more catastrophic than what we are going through now. The worlds geopolitical landscape has been booby trapped by the Bush McCain administration and their republican allies in congress. These booby traps are poised to spring at any time.
Fortunately the Worlds Nations have been blest with many excellent leaders (except the US) who have been careful, wise, strong, and self-restrained in dealing with the provocations, and antagonism’s of the Bush, McCain administration.
Barack Obama and the democrats are your best hope now. Tell your family, friends, and everyone you know to support them as best you can, and vote for them like your life, and the lives of your loved ones depends on it. Because it does. You will not survive 4 more years of Bush McCain.

For the simpletons out there who believe McCain’s move was the right thing to do:
1. 6 months he said, “I don’t know as much about the economy as I should.”
2. He is not qualified to help ‘create’ an economic plan.
3. If it was such a crisis, why did he miss three hearings on it and then still find time to do an interview with Couric…and then wait until the next morning to fly to DC?
4. When he had an opportunity to speak in the hearing yesterday, he said 2 minutes of nothing. That’s it.
5. If he’s such a straight shooter, flying to Mississippi to do a 90-minute debate should take no preparation at all. He can just use some ‘straight talk.’
6. He didn’t stop campaigning – at all. That’s mostly what he has been doing. It’s all a campaign ploy created by someone who is sinking fast.
7. Members from both sides were upset by his swooping in for a photo opp.
8. He’s afraid. And he’s afraid for Palin, as I believe we all are. Both of them will lose their debates badly.

Posted by: steve | September 25, 2008, 8:10 pm 8:10 pm

I almost wonder if McCain is planning on voting ‘no’ against the bill. That way he can stand up and say he voted no. If he pulled all of this just to set up a political trap, it would really show he is deceptive to the extreme.
The american people are smarter than this. Plain and simple.
I don’t know what kind of game McCain thinks he’s playing, but I truly hope that both the press and the American people call him out on it.
You don’t delay a debate unless you put yourself first.
You don’t pretend to stop your campaign, but still continue to campaign unless you put yourself first.
And you especially don’t show up in delicate negotiations just to grandstand unless you really put yourself first.
It’s so obvious that it’s a ploy — and he’s done it before. He wanted to skip the debates with George Bush in 2000.
Lies, deception, and playing games. McCain should just throw in the towel.

Financial Bailout – A Taxpayer Sellout and Obama Wants To Raise Taxes
Persons in state and federal House of Representatives and the Senate that want an increase in wage earner taxes must be impeached from office. Government has too much money if it can support war-like conflicts around the world and give away money for bailouts of banks and other business. The give-a-ways must stop.
Obama, your tax programs will place Americans deeper in debt and cause a depression. Who does arrogant Obama think he knows better how to spend taxpayers’ money? What money give-a-way programs does he want to benefit the American taxpayer? All I see in Obama is complete crap about more taxes to give away more money. Reduce taxes and stop the war like conflicts around the world. Obama does not have the financial experience to realize that a free market will seek equilibrium, the badly run business and banks will be picked apart, and the stronger companies and banks will take over the best assets. There is no need for higher taxes unless it is the desire of Obama to feed more corruption. Obama’s tax increases will cause a taxpayers’ debt bubble.
