Palin Media Avoidance Watch, Day Seven

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was named to the Republican ticket one week ago, and she has yet to answer questions from reporters.

Yes, some of the comments from the punditocracy about her have been untoward, even sexist, but given the importance of the job she accepted Wednesday night in her nomination speech, it’s entirely reasonable for voters to expect Palin to answer questions from journalists about her positions and her record.

If Sens. Barack Obama, D-Ill., or Joe Biden, D-Del., refused to answer questions from the press, the RNC and the McCain campaign would never stop carping about it — and rightly so.

In fact, they have done so in the past when Obama has gone several days without talking to the media.

So what are we to expect from Gov. Palin?

Time magazine’s Jay Carney tried to get McCain spox Nicolle Wallace to answer this question the other night.

Watch HERE.

Carney: We know now that Sarah Palin can give one hell of a speech, she’s a natural, and that’s no mean feat. We don’t know yet, and we won’t know until you guys allow her to take questions, you know, can she answer tough questions about domestic policy, foreign policy –

Wallace: Wait, wait. Questions from who? From him, from you? Who cares? No offense, but –

Carney: I think the American people care –

Wallace: I think the American people want to see her, but who cares if she can talk to Time Magazine? She can talk to the American people. They want to see "How am I going to save my home?"

Carney: The American people need to know, just like they need to know about Joe Biden and Barack Obama –

Wallace: That she can talk to you?

Carney: Not just to me — that she knows things about domestic and foreign policy that presidents and vice presidents need to know.

Wallace: Right. But, but here’s the thing… the media did something to this family that I’ve never seen before. In my life. And I think she took the stage last night and, you know, she made her own points. She put this discussion and this race and this convention in her own terms. And she didn’t do it by talking, all due respect, to people like you. She took the stage and talked to the American people about things they care about, how they’re going to save their homes.

**

So what does that mean, practically speaking? Will the woman seeking to be a heartbeat away from the presidency avoid talking to the media? Obama sat down for an interview with Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly Thursday — hardly friendly terrain. Is Palin willing to do the same?

So far I haven’t heard back from the McCain-Palin campaign about this question.

- jpt

UPDATE: McCain campaign spox Jill Hazelbaker emails to say "of course" Palin will do interviews and press conferences. On the other hand, our friend Marc Ambinder at The Atlantic reports that a senior McCain campaign official tells him that "Palin won’t submit to a formal interview anytime soon. She may take some questions from local news entities in Alaska, but until she’s ready — and until she’s comfortable — which might not be for a long while — the media will have to wait. The campaign believes it can effectively deal with the media’s complaints, and their on-the-record response to all this will be: ‘Sarah Palin needs to spend time with the voters.’ Not out of the question are appearances on lighter, fluffier television shows. But — not for a while."

The media is trying to make news about the media’s trial and turbulations. Poor media.

Sarah Palin is the new Obama, The new most famous person in the world. Uh Oh, Wonder if she is a
Muslim too? Or worse, the anti-christ?
Its all about Palin for the next few weeks. It might be a bad thing that she is more Popular then McCain.

We’ve only seen Sarah Palin v1.0. Wait ’til v2.0 next week, after the handlers and tutors try to bring her up to speed. How do you think she will handle a whirl-wind brainwashing? Can you imagine the pressure she will be under constantly? How long does Stockholm Syndrome take to establish itself? Does this mean she has she sold her soul, too?

During the pivotal Iowa campaign, Obama sought to burnish his populist “tinge” by telling a misleading story about his response to an Exelon nuclear accident that outraged Illinois residents in late 2005 and early 2006. On December 1 of 2005, Exelon admitted that it had discovered radioactive by-products of nuclear power in monitoring wells at its Braidwood plant, located in central Illinois. Citizen concerns deepened when radioactive tritium was discovered in a home drinking well near the plant and Exelon revealed that this substance came from millions of gallons of water that had leaked from the plant over many years. Exelon had not been required to report the leaks since the radioactive discharges had not reached the level of what the Nuclear Regulatory Commission called “an emergency.”
Last November, Obama told a campaign crowd in Iowa that he had introduced a U.S. Senate bill that required nuclear plant owners to notify local and state authorities immediately when even small leaks had occurred. The bill, he told Iowa voters, was “the only nuclear legislation that I’ve passed. I just did that last year,” Obama claimed, eliciting “murmurs of approval” [3].
But, as the New York Times reported in a front-page story two days before Super Tuesday, the truth of what happened after the Braidwood leak was very different than Obama’s self-serving version. “While he initially fought to advance” a bill very much like what he claimed to have “passed,” Times reporter Mike McIntire noted, “Mr. Obama eventually rewrote it to reflect changes sought by Senate Republicans, Exelon, and nuclear regulators. Those revisions propelled the bill through a crucial committee. But contrary to Mr. Obama’s comments in Iowa, it ultimately died amid parliamentary wrangling in the full Senate despite the removal of language mandating prompt reporting. Instead, the bill simply offered guidance to regulators, whom it charged with addressing the issue of unreported links.” As McIntire suggested, this ignominious legislative aftermath contradicted Obama’s campaign claim and followed in natural accord with the following facts [4]:
* Obama had received at least $227,000 in campaign cash from Exelon since 2003.
* “Exelon’s support for Mr. Obama far exceeds its support for any other presidential candidate.”
* Exelon executives met repeatedly with Obama’s staff to discuss Obama’s ultimately diluted and aborted bill.
* Obama’s chief political strategist David Axlerod had worked as a consultant to Exelon since 2002.

The media gave up their credibility in order to push Obama. There are consequences to that. I’m sure Palin will meet with “the media” – but who could blame her for it being the time, place, and outlet/interviewer of her choosing.
The press standing on “the public’s right to know” rings false when they aren’t concerned with the right to know about Obama’s background but delve feverishly into the Palin family wombs.

Nuclear safety advocates are divided on whether Mr. Obama’s efforts yielded any lasting benefits. David A. Lochbaum of the Union of Concerned Scientists agreed that “it took the introduction of the bill in the first place to get a reaction from the industry.”
“But of course because it is all voluntary,” Mr. Lochbaum said, “who’s to say where things will be a few years from now?”
Last October, Mr. Obama reintroduced the bill, in its rewritten form.*-

The campaign PR machine will keep her under wraps, away from any press conferences or interviews with national-level journalists and reporters. They will trot her out for photo ops in small rural towns and allow her to speak from a teleprompter only. Then she will go “underground” to prep for her debate with Joe Biden. If Biden disagrees with her on any issue, they will play the “sexism” card over and over.
Pathetic.

The Media deserves this. I can totally understand why she refuses to talk to those mean-spirited reporters.

Posted by: amy | September 5, 2008, 12:31 pm 12:31 pm

Aparently People Magazine is more her style. After her speech Wednesday night, the handlers have obviously put a muzzle on her. Too bad because she opens her mouth, Obama get $10,000,000 in donations. Come on guys what are ya’ll afraid of? Barracutta my foot.

Posted by: Jenny Rome Ga | September 5, 2008, 12:31 pm 12:31 pm

Whine, whine, whine.
I could think of lots of questions that have not been asked of Obama and Biden if the press has nothing to do.
But just think on the positive side, this gives the Media more time to better plan and coordinate with the Obama campaign on attack plans and next mud-slinging for the remainder of the campaign.
(Where were you the last 2 years when Obama refused to go on Fox news to be interviewed? I don’t remember the cries of outrage.)

Posted by: Sally J. | September 5, 2008, 12:32 pm 12:32 pm

Yeah, that was breathtaking. The media, as much as it has become infotainment, is the only way for voters to learn what candidates will actually DO, and if she can’t defend them without a script, we have no way of knowing if she’ll do them or not. She’s cancelled a solo appearance in Tampa already and there was talk she’d go back up to Alaska for a week. A WEEK!
Tapper, will you in the media PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stand up for your–and our– first amendment rights, and stop reporting whatever politicians of any party spoonfeed you? It’s only the republic at stake, and all.
But, you know, it’s not about the issues. So, gossip!

Right on Nicolle Wallace. The McCain strategists have figured out that they need to go around the audacious bias of the media to get their own words out untainted. Straight talk to the voters without the negative media spin.
I would guess Ms Palin and team will come back and talk to the main stream media once the bias and shrill tone of these “journalists” dials back!

Posted by: j | September 5, 2008, 12:36 pm 12:36 pm

If the McCain-Palin team wants to win over undecided voters, she cannot be kept isolated from the press. Obama has been researched, interviewed and questioned since February, 2007 and I keep reading that America doesn’t know enough about him or his views. With a 72 year old Presidential candidate, I can’t imagine that voters will feel comfortable with a prohibition on interviews of the VP candidate.

Perhaps because she lied repeatedly in her speech. Or is it the fact she lied about her record? Or is it simply she’s another airhead lemming that is simply saying what Carl Rove tells her to say.
SO WHAT?
SHE IS ASKING TO BE THE 2nd MOST POWERFUL PERSON IN OUR COUNTRY!!!
HELL YES WE WANT HER ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS FIRST!!!
HER STATEMENTS AND HER ACTIONS DO NOT ADD UP. SHE NEEDS TO TELL THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WHY!!!
Oh, Palin’s just a “small town hockey mom” so we should be nice to her and not ask her anything that requires her to explain her record right?
GOP supporters are freakin morons. They’ll listen to a bunch of bullsh&% and as long as it’s wrapped in an American flag they salute it.

Jake
this is the strongest and baddest similarity that is starting to show the ugly head of the last 8 years…
make a mistake
shut it down
cover it up
draw fire toward the press accusing people of “unpatriotism” and now sexism…
charge at them saying the press is manipulating …
and say it is national security reasons or “your right” to not answer questions.
the last 8 years is in direct correlation to what I call the corruption of silence…
not a code of silence …
but it’s corruption.
when the American people say we need reform because of the last 8 years…
it is about the paces that did not have light shown on them.
the places where only, after millions of dollars and a fearful press waking up did we find
… that when someone tells you that the brown thing they have in their hand that they are going to serve is chocolate pudding and threatens you to back off from the kitchen…and you smell … and they threaten you some more removing it from your eyeline… and they yell at you to back off …all the while it smells like “crap”
it is the press’ job to askto see the “pudding” before it is served.
it is not that Palin was unfairly attacked it is just the tidal wave of issues and questions that have no answers… that they seem to be like Bush trying to hide.

The mainstream media never asked tough questions about Obama’s alleged homosexual affair and drug use! The media wouldn’t touch John Edwards hiding in the bathroom from Enquirer reporters! The media didn’t dare ask Bill Clinton about the cigar in Monica’s butt! The mainstream media in this country is bought and sold cheaper than our politicians!

Palin’s inability to answer what a vice president does in an interview last week with MSNBC factors into the decision, I’m sure. There’s also more surfacing, on a daily basis, from her mayoral and governor past which would be grist for interviewing. Of course, the obvious question is raised. If her handlers don’t have enough confidence for her to participate in interviews, how can she be expected to have the competencies needed for an actual vp position?

McCain’s choice in picking Palin shows complete stupidity, arrogance and lack of experience on his part. As a female, does he think all females are stupid to vote for him just because of her. She is definetely no HILLIARY, SEBILLUS, OR MCCASKILL. So why in the heck would we vote for an unintelligent, lack of book smarts, inexperienced female to be a heart beat away for the #1 spot.
Palin’s daughter’s pregnancy is not an issue, her five children is no issue. Lack of experience in the small state of Alaska is a huge issue. What give her the right to oppose what women should do with their bodies.
Obama is far more educated and experienced than Palin. McCain only chose her because Hilliary wasn’t on the ticket. It doesn’t matter because as a female and as strong women in the world we would not vote for an inexperienced Republican ticket.

3 out of the 4 candidates will be on Sunday morning news shows this weekend to address the miserable jobs report just out. The fourth will be holed up in her Alaskan igloo with stacks of briefing books by her side. I wonder what the mooseburger-making HOKEYmom’s plans are to revitalize the economy anyway. Hopefully, she got a little bit of education on that in her 5 schools in 6 years.
Obviously, this woman is not ready for prime time.

Posted by: jefferson | September 5, 2008, 12:52 pm 12:52 pm

She’s ready to lead? It took her 6 yrs and 6 different schools to get a 4 yr degree in journalism, minoring in sports broadcasting. And she’s ready to lead? Be #2?
Forget the experience question, does she have the EDUCATION and the KNOWLEDGE to discuss foreign policy? How about the knowledge to discuss domestic policy, which doesn’t include abortion, guns, and gays?
Give me a break people. Only in America can they bring out a pedestal, stick a white woman with no qualifying credentials on it, and say she’s ready to lead a country of 300 million people. Because they are afraid of the Senator.
And she had the nerve to belittle Senator Obama for being a community organizer years ago? A US Senator, state senator, constitutional law professor, civil rights attorney, political science degree at Columbia Univ, Harvard Law Degree, President of the Harvard Law Review. He runs circles around both McCain AND Palin.
Lets not forget, Legislative and Executive branches were created equal, and they serve two separate purposes. One does not king the other. And lets also not forget, John Sidney McCain is a legislator, with no executive experience.
Newt Gingrich ought to be ashamed of himself. They are building this christianist up with no accomplishments other than being mayor of 9,000, and being groomed for higher office as a selected Governor in Alaska, of all places.

If you have the nation’s largest newspaper behaving like gossip clearing house, Palin has every reason to not to talk to the mean-spirited reporters.
New York Times admits faulty reporting on Palin
In their eagerness to discredit a politician, even reporters at the best of newspapers can accept shady information as fact, without checking adequately on its source.
This was published in today’s Times:
Alaskan Independence Party officials released a statement Monday saying that Ms. Palin had been a member for two years, from 1994 to 1996, information included in reports in The New York Times and other news outlets. In Internet videos of recent party meetings, other party officials can be seen boasting of Ms. Palin’s past membership.
On Tuesday, though, the party’s chairwoman, Lynette Clark, said the earlier statement was false. Ms. Clark said that she had based it on information another party member had given her, but that a review of the records showed only that Ms. Palin had attended the 1994 conference.
Ms. Clark added that while the review confirmed Todd Palin as a member, it did not indicate that Ms. Palin had been one.
On Wednesday, Ms. Clark released a corrected statement, saying, in part, “I, foolishly, repeated and accepted as fact what an officer of this membership shared with myself, and husband Dexter Clark, over a year ago.”
“I humbly apologize to Governor Palin, and to both national and local press and media,” she added.
Ms. Palin has been registered as a Republican since May 1982, according to the State Division of Elections. Mr. Palin registered as a member of the Alaskan Independence Party in 1995, remaining a member for all but two months of the next seven years, until he registered as an undeclared voter in July 2002.
Oopsies.

froggy
how about her denial and avoidance of science with regard to evolution and global warming
her now discovered relationship with the Alaskan healthcare lobby
her anti women’s equality and rights positions
how about her keeping the money with that bridge situation
or raising money for the guy she threw out after it was being reported he was a crook and her own political career could take a jump forward
how about her answering a single question about any issue that we face today?
about her “energy expertize” that seems to have to do with an oil economy dependent state building a pipeline and drilling for more oil?
about any knowledge she has about any issue?
how about pinting to russia on a map?
or tellingus her thoughts on separation of powers?
what she thinks of science with regard to picking supreme court justices
how she will negotiate a trade deal and thoughts on the industrialization of China and India with regard to global warming since she does not “buy into” man made causes.?
or how our war on terror is fought in cultures like southeast asia has…or in Africa…can she point to those…never mind tell us socio political ramification of that terror war…
would she be able to know the difference and effects of shooting down planes on 9/11 with Russia? if it had passengers that were saudi, Indonesian or Afghani…would she understand how deep the threat was and what the ramification s were
does she know who the mujahadin was and what the CIA tactic was in afghanistan with them that brought us OBL and gang…and how it is similar to what we just did in afghjanistan?
and how does that relate to Vietnam war tactics?
the historical socio political history of georgia?

Give her a little time to get her land legs……

the VP, for all intensive purposes, must learn the policies and plans of the President, because he is the one who will be making the decisions, not her, and given the short amount of time she has even known that is the VP, she must learn all the ins and outs of mccain’s policies and positions and recite them to the press to form a united front…..when she is ready, she will talk to the press, but there’s no need to jump into that snake pit too early and make a critical mistake, no matter how much those idiots cry and whine about how they are being “ignored”……don’t make yourselves the story if you can’t get the story you want….

This can be Mccain camp’s strategy. I have no doubt that Palin can confidently handle the reporters — you should watch her governor campaign debate. it is good now this immense interests are building, so when she does the press conference, there will be so many people watching, and she will again awe them!! Good strategy!

Posted by: amy | September 5, 2008, 1:03 pm 1:03 pm

agree with an earlier post regarding obama…..he has been their darling for a long time, and the biased coverage helped him to secure the nomination (despite having Clinton be the only candidate capable of being the best President that our children, our troops and America needs right now)….had obama received the kind of intense scrutiny that palin is getting right now, Hillary Clinton would probably be well on her way to a reagan-like landslide victory in November…

Debra-No thanks. I don’t care what party a person belongs to, if you are picked to be the VP of this country you better be able to answer questions – not just “campaign”. I’m to believe she’s ready to lead our nation now, but she can’t interact with our press now. If Palin thinks our press is difficult, she is woefully ill-prepared for the likes of Putin.

After the grilling Obama took on Rezko & Wright (rightfully so to some extent) & his willingness to address those issues in a gracious fashion. It is ABSOLUTELY right & fair that Sarah Palin face questions from the press. We have NO IDEA who this person is (she seems nice enough but Hitler probably would also in the setting she’s had to present herself so far). After all the screaming from the right about Obama being this that & the other because they simply didn’t know him, now are these same people really willing to put this lady a heartbeat from the Presidency just because they happen to agree with her on morality???
I pray for the good of our Country this lady faces the questions the American people need answered.
The press needs to stay on this & perform it’s duty.
No free pass. ABC has an opportunity here to redeem itself somewhat & do the right thing by our Country. Will you demand answers???

I just want to know as do the rest of the American people…why she is above having to answer questions by any media source? What is the McCain camp afraid of? What are they hiding? If they have nothing to hide then let her answer questions. I haven’t heard her say anything about how she’s going to fix this broken economy or the healthcare situation we’re in…what her thoughts are regarding the war in Iraq, from her mouth what her postion is on abortion. I just want her to say to the media where she stands on issues. Joe Biden and Obama have been fairly open with the media and have been very cooperative. Why is the media giving Palin and McCain a pass? The media shouldn’t have to kiss up to Palin and McCain in order to get them to talk. They need to answer questions now..the clock is ticking. They’re just stalling..for what though? What are they waiting for?

Posted by: momof2or | September 5, 2008, 1:08 pm 1:08 pm

She can’t take questions because she’s going to McCain policy “boot camp”. They’re trying to teach her everything she needs to know. Like conservative economist Ben Stein said, and I’m paraphrasing here, “Like the baby superman, they need to pour all of the knowledge of the world in her head. She needs Henry Kissinger for a babysitter”. Sad, that.

The nervous “Bots” are out in force….OK, OK, we get it…you think by trashing this Governor/Mayor who’s had to make more decisions on any given day than Bozo did before campaigning (run by Axlerod puppet master) in his 143 days in the Senate, you will make your point. I wish Gov. Palin could have the advantage of months of media (liberal) ignoring looking into her past the way they did with BO, AFTER it was too late for Hillary to benefit. He wouldn’t have won if the Wright, Ayers, Rezko stuff had hit the press before Feb. She has 60 days for Americans to be with her or against her….I’M WITH HER. McCAIN/PALIN

Now all the polls out indicating Obama is sinking. His highest lead is 4 points (Gallup), and CBS has him tied with McCain. This is the only one week after his convention speech. McCain’s new ad – empty talker is very effective. By November, nobody will remember Obama’s plans (which are copied from Hillary anyway) but only his fake seal, his “i am the symbol”, and his “bitter” small town. Also, when the Wright ad comes out, I think the most effective should be in October, he will be totally toasted.

Where has the media researched Obama. Americans still haven’t been told about Black Liberation Theology — the ideology followed by Trinity and taught by Rev. Wright and Phleger. They researched a DUI by Palin’s husband, but nothing on the Marxist, racist cult to which Obama belonged for 20 years. They ignored the context and implications of this worldview on his ability to lead all Americans. They’d prefer to call him a “Christian” — when his “church” was simply a forum to advocate concepts associated with Latin American Marxists and the Black Power Movement. They’ve done virtually no reporting on Rezco, William Ayers, his dabbling with cocaine or Marxism as a youth. That’s of interest to capitalists and other large segments of the population. What audience is ABC looking for — and voter is it trying to educate — when it reports on absurd and irrlevant facts and innuendo?

This woman gives me the creeps. She is false and a liar. Deceit is written all over her face.
And she hides behind a suit of religious fanaticism.
I pray everyday that Democrats will win against this band of evil doers.
We are in a war between good and evil.
And the worst evil is the one that hides behind fanatical religious precepts and righteousness, like republicans do.
This year I pray that true goodness and not apparent goodness will finally win in this country and that it make US a beacon of light in the world.
Democrats are being attacked and made fun of, and persecuted with lies and false intrigues, while we all watch and are persuaded to continue voting for a group that has caused US so much pain.

Nice run down from wikipedia in her speech though. It was as comical as Bush reeling off the Nigerian cabinet in that debate.

A new book about Palin will be published early October.
A new biography, titled “Sarah Palin: A New Kind of Leader” by Joe Hilley (Zondervan 2008), will explore themes from her career in politics, her life as a hockey mom, and her strongly held Christian faith, explaining how they influence her new style of leadership and align with our changing economy in the information age. The book is scheduled for release nationwide on October 10, 2008.
We live in an age that values relationship over authority and instant information over accuracy, so breadth of knowledge and depth of conviction are the most prized commodities for our leaders,” said Hilley. “Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin brings both of these qualities and more to her new role as John McCain’s running mate and I’m eager for readers to have the opportunity to know her and her brand of leadership more thoroughly.
At the end, it is millions of Americans who come to judge her, not the newspaper reporters and the bloggers who are so eager to destroy her.

Yes, she is!
Look what she has accomplished in her young life!
She was a re-elected mayor who currently is the most popular governor in the fifty states.
She is a creative administrator; she got rid of unnecessary merchandise owned by the state (a jet plane) on e-bay.
She is an efficent administrator; she has returned tax monies to the people of her state.
She has raised a lovely family, imperfect though it might be and has shown that she handles adversity well and with the courage of her convictions.
You might not agree with Sarah’s “prolife” viewpoint,
but “prolife’ I S a form of
“pro-choice”, isn’t it?
And although I am “pro-choice” I think Obama’s views… and votes..regarding late term abortions with no care to be given a living body which might emerge from the mother is horrible.
In fact,I would call that “infanticide”!
Back to “smarts”:

Obama gave an open press conference yesterday. Biden has been making the rounds on the morning news shows taking questions. They both will be on Sunday morn talk this weekend.
Where are McCain and Palin?
McCain will appear Sunday after doing a taped and edited for ABC the other night
Palin? Who knows.

Sarah Palin has a lot of enemies, we now find. She may have to try to seal Scott Alan Richter’s divorce records herself. Or shred them all. Perhaps the National Enquirer is right about the alleged affair, because Richter’s motion is highly unusual for an unknown person. But not for one who could soon be very well known.

Obama still hasn’t been vetted by the MSM and probably never will.
He has gone weeks without talking to reporters and still avoids the foreign press and didn’t allow them on his plane.
If Obama can learn enough foreign policy in one week I think Sarah can top that. She won’t waste time with a stupid Berlin speech and will visit wounded troops.
Palin will learn fast and will be prepared. That’s what Obama is so afraid of.

What was the explaination Obama gave the media about his association with William Ayers? I suppose the media thought that hanging with a Marxist and admitted terrorists isn’t relevant to his judgement and decision-making ability. What about the fact Obama followed Black Liberation Theology for 20 years? Have the media explained what this ideology believes, how it was developed and its goals? They were eager to ask these things of a conservative Mormom — but not a Democrat who followed a “faith” created by Latin American Marxists and merged with a racial identity. I suppose someone from the McCain campaign or a conservative group will have to do the media’s job. The problem with being a cheerleader and sychophant of Obama is that it will ultimately become evident to the American people. I’m guessing the Dan Rather thing taught the media nothing.

Oxycon
the media did what they had to do…
what are they supposed to do…
this is the woman wanting to be the leader of the free world and they are overwhelmed with questions and a history that is a box full of red flags…
that either the McCain campaign never did their job…
or planned to ignore.
these are not people wanting to know just about if Todd is going to stay home with the kids
this is about nuclear weapons…and socio/political histories
and understanding and answers to the healthcare and social security crisis from a woman that is now connected with the state healthcare lobby…
about a woman getting up and saying she said “no thanks ” to that bridge as a main reason she should be VP… after she was for it and she kept the money
about knowing the history of Korea
about a woman who asks a reporter 2 months before she is offered the job “what exactly the VP did during the day anyway?”
about a woman who say she was “so busy with state issues she hasn’t really paid attention to Iraq” (a state with a 90 day a year active legislature by the way…ugh)
this is not a press isolating one candidate
this is the press going whoah! as they open this door they expect nothing to be behind and told to ignore or yelled at that they are sexist by the sheer number of things they have to report…and trying to figure out out of ALL of these things what is just bad…and what is REALLY BAD.
becasue so far the only thing that has really held up…is that she has good cadence and delivery ousing someone else’s words.

Bring on the Press: I pray that the media not back off until all questions are answered.
I, myself have many questions for Mrs. Palin. To start, I’d like her to explain some of the discrepancies in her speech:
She said that she told the congress “no thanks” for money for the bridge to nowhere, but she conveniently didn’t mention that she kept the money.
She said parents with special needs children will have a friend in the white house, but didn’t mention that she slashed funding for special needs children in Alaska.
She also didn’t mention that she used the line item veto to remove funding for housing for pregnant homeless teenagers.
Incidentally, a pit bull with or without lipstick is still just an attack dog

This is pure and unadulterated personality-cult around Palin now. Holy smokes. They say Obama supporters are followers – at least we were educated on where he actually stands. 22 debates, and he EARNED each vote, and won the nomination fair-and-square. Palin gets cherry picked to be a weak heartbeat away from the Presidency and then refuses to answer any questions that might be contrary to the narrative? And you Palindrones just eat it up. A cult of personality by its very definition!

Here what I find very hypocritcal. Palin if I remember correctly told Sen.Clinton to stop “whining” about the media. Her advice to Hillary was if the media goes after you come back harder and more motivated.
Why isn’t she doing the same.
Is it because she has no knowledge on the issues?
or she may commit a severe gaffe?
Sooner or later before the VP debate she will have to face the media.

The media should be careful what they ask for. Palin is a tough, intelligent and conservative woman. She would love to spank the media. She just wants to speak directly to Americans first before she challenges Obama’s campaign staff represented by the media. Why prioritize those who are determined to destroy her? She’ll demonstrate soon enough that you don’t have to be a Leftist sychophant in order to be intelligent, caring and an inspiration to women.

Posted by: CannonRay | September 5, 2008, 1:58 pm 1:58 pm

Palin’s media coverage is not as the same as that of Hillary. Hers is truely outragous: the reporters are more interested in when her water broke, whether there was DNA test, how long did she fly back to Alaska to give birth, etc.
They didn’t report anything like this on Hillary.
ABC and NYT both spread rumor about her relationship with AIP, and had to correct it the next day.
Also about the troopergate — I have done some research and am pretty confident that Palin will be proved innocent. This trooper is really something in a bad way — you don’t see the reporters talking about that.
Palin has every reason to be offended.

Why don’t you talk about the fact that Sarah Palin cut funding for single teen moms in Alaska.
Or maybe about the fact that the so-called “advocate” for disabled Americans cut funding for such programs by no less than 63%!
Next there is the company that had to lay off workers because of a gas shortage – all the while Sarah Barracuda was making an international gas deal while saying she was sorry while lying through her teeth.
Why didn’t Sarah Palin tell the audience that as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, she left a town of 9,000 people ten million dollars in debt, or that she hired a lobbyist to secure pork barrel spending and earmarks for the city?
Palin bragged to the audience about opposing the infamous bridge to nowhere, neglecting to mention that she was actually for it before she was against it.

Why are all the bloggers for Obama sounding like CNN and MSNBC? Do you all just sit there waiting for someone on TV to give you a talking point since you can’t come up with any of your own? Maybe Obama should just invest in some microchips for you all so that you wouldn’t have to work so hard defending your stance, beliefs, whatever you want to call it. I’m sure Palin will talk to the media soon and I’m looking forward to hearing her perspective. I’m also looking forward to her cleaning their clock. The media already underestimated her once. Keep it up.

Posted by: MSM is Dead | September 5, 2008, 2:12 pm 2:12 pm

It’s been a whirlwind week for Palin and she’s not yet ready to go in front of the press. This is campaign strategy. They have to make sure that she is able to talk foreign policy with reporters, in interviews on her own where she is not able to be coached. They need to make sure she knows all the campaign talking points and can give a little information on each issue to make it seem like she is adept enough for the job. This is S.O.P., it will just be more noticeable now that there is less than 8 weeks till the election. This will only go unnoticed by the mass press for a short time. If she isn’t talking to the press and answering questions after the end of next week, the press will be all over her.

“It’s no wonder FOX crushed everyone else in Convention ratings. They have truly been fair.”
More lies for FoxNew fans
By any measurement, this convention was a popular one among viewers. Early ratings from Nielsen — subject to revision later in the day — suggested that CNN had reached a milestone on Thursday, with more than 8 million viewers during the 10 p.m. hour, more than any of the broadcast networks. If confirmed by Nielsen this afternoon, the ratings would represent CNN’s first time topping the broadcast networks. (Fox News Channel defeated the broadcasters during the Republican convention in 2004.)”

Lisa; You are all making redundant arguments against yourselves. Obama couldn’t discuss policy at all when the debates began. He was a novice which is why Hillary Clinton won the debates. Now she has to save him on the road because with all his money, with all his famous backing, with all the media power, with all his youth push, he can’t even get a decent bounce. Yet, after the Palin anouncement; per CBS POLL, McCain 42% thats a 3point bounce and a negative of 3 points for Obama now 42%. America is NOT buying it.

Posted by: Yourgameletsplay. | September 5, 2008, 2:13 pm 2:13 pm

She will not give an interview right now because it will dampen her convention speech bounce. As she begins to answer questions, middle of the road – non-ideologue voters are going to run from her. She’s on the ticket to firm up the red meat base. She can’t please both them and middle-of-the-road voters, so they’re shutting her up. She’s good for the base, but will hurt the McCain camp with undecideds.
Don’t dis the media. The media play a very important role. They should continue to pursue the prego story, the troopergate story, etc. I truly don’t believe she is who she’s being “portrayed” to be. Eventually, and before Nov., she’ll be forced to address the media and answer questions, regularly. If not, Obama/Biden make this a huge issue of truthfulness and trustworthiness.

Posted by: SgtPepper | September 5, 2008, 2:15 pm 2:15 pm

Palin has much to answer because she is too far to the right of mainstream America and wants to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.
Questions that need to be answered by the media and questions we need to ask ourselves as thinking, reasoning voters:
On national televison, Palin asked a reporter: “What does the vice president do?” Does she really not know?
Palin’s position on abortion: No abortions, not ever, for no reason.
What about in cases of rape? A 12 or 13 year girl pregnant from incest? What if the mother-to-be risks death by giving birth? Does Palin care so little for everyone BUT the fetus/unborn child?
Palin’s position on education: Teach creationism, not science. Is this how we prepare our youth for a modern, highly competitive, technological world?
Palin’s position on sex education: Abstinence only education. If it is so effective, why is her daughter pregnant?
Palin’s firing of a trooper who was being divorced by her sister and the firing of a chief of police in Wasilla that she didn’t like: What really happened?
Palin’s overriding ambition is such that she throw her daughter to the wolves as her daughter’s pregnancy is made public fodder. What matters more to Palin — her ambitions or her family?
Why does Palin devalue community service and organizing? Does she not realize that many of us Christian women are doing community service helping those who are pregnant including the teenage mothers, who are the victims of rape/incest, those who need help in education so they can have good jobs and be successful?
What experience does Palin have? Alaska is a wonderful state with wonderful people, but excuse me, there are cities in the country that have a higher population than Alaska. That doesn’t mean Alaska is unimportant, it’s just that it’s not the same as being a heart-beat away from the presidency.
The media has every right to ask all the relevant questions — the news is the 4th estate — and for those of you who don’t believe that the media has the right to “go after” Palin — move to Russia — you’ll feel right at home. Reporters in Russia get killed for asking pertinent questions.
McCain has offered Palin to get the votes of women and the extreme right. He has let down his country and his party by doing so.
If Palin cannot stand the heat of reporters, she needs to go back to Alaska and stay there.

I guess Palin isn’t ready to lead.
Oh well. It was a nice while it lasted.
I hope she didn’t pull a Britney Spears and shave her head or something.
Maybe they can hire an actor to play Palin. Maybe Tina Fey could be VP…. now that would be really funny! And it would prove McCain is an even bigger maverick if he put a professional comedian in office.

Reading a speech from teleprompter written by Bush’s speechwriter… even a dumb beauty pageant can do that…. even as dumb as one who had to hop six colleges to squeeze out a degree…
So, don’t expect Palin to do anything other than hide under the tails of McCain and of his arrogant-idiot-surrogates when trying to find out how dumb she is as far as VP materials go.

Posted by: james | September 5, 2008, 2:21 pm 2:21 pm

What they need to do is get some focus groups together so that they can create some positions for Palin to hold when talking to the press. I like Palin’s positions, but they aren’t what appeals to independents and crossovers… which is what McCain needs.
If they can figure out how to make Palin more marketable, it would help voters buy the McCain brand.
They also need to slow down the troopergate investigation.
Otherwise we will be stuck with Obama.

Obama cult upset Gov. Palin taking away some of this spotlight. Aww, isn’t he a bit overexposed anyway?..I think his 15 minutes are just about up. I’m hoping Gov. Palin has more of a back bone than the flip flopper Nobama…can’t even make a yes or no decision 130 time in the Senate (Hillary and Edwards were both dismayed by that). Well, like the good Rev. Wright said to Moyers “he says what he has to as a Politican”….his CHANGE ain’t so much with Biden….now Maverick McCain/Palin…..THAT’S a CHANGE we can believe.

While the Obama camp runs wild with flinging rumors since he lacks a connection with most of the country.

Hey YOURGAMELETSPLAY, it’s a tongue-in-cheek comment, although the irony is certainly there for all to see. I suppose you’re going to say that “hey, I can identify with that, it’s real world stuff.” Intelligent people see that for what it is, partisanship.
I’m no person’s judge. I don’t judge Palin or her daughter for having unprotected sex with her boyfriend out of wedlock against the parental direction of her mother. It sure does make a case for abstinence only sex ed doesn’t it? Should she (Palin) live on this here planet earth, she, perhaps, would have, at some point, mentioned to her daughter, “you know, in case you do, please use protection!” But, that thar thinking will land you in hell won’t it.
My point, she may connect with the base, but not with intelligent, free thinking, grounded, real world folk.
This says a lot about who she is. Head in sand republican. Close your eyes and it will all go away!

She has been talking to voters – so which is more important? Hmm, media doesn’t like having a seat at the table so they can fulfil their 4th estate role? Then they should live up to the 4th estate responsibilities, starting with objectivity. Why bother talking with them, when everyone knows there are filters and bias everywhere? I can pick up any paper, watch any tv show, listen to any radio program, and tell you which journalists are Dem or Rep within 1 minute.

I am a female in my lates 40′s and am insultedthat an unqualified female vice presidential contender was thrown into this campaign, as a strategy. As Limbaugh would say it, “Palin’s a babe”.
She was chosen by the Republican brigade, because she was young and attractive. Cindy McCain said of Palin’s foreign experience, “she has been a neighbor of Russia” Palin had difficulty in getting a degree. Geo. W. Bush was ‘C student. See where we got with that? We were embarassed when he opened his mouth and with his ‘gun slinging’ and selfish attitude to people and our environment.
What we need is diplomacy and statesmanship. We need to talk to governments around the world and reach consensus. We continue to be a world power, yet have no respect from the world for which are a part. We don’t need another beady eyed (grandpa) cowboy and an inexperienced babe. When McCain kicks it the thought is overwhelmingly scary…

SgtPepper, you have no idea what conversations she may have had with her daughter. Making your assumptions with a condescending tone must mean that you are a perfect person who has heeded all the advice that has made you the winner that you are. But then she went on and used that as evidence for why she is ready to lead the country!
Using a little joke to prove she is ready to step into the Oval Office!
Only a koolaid drinker would cast a ballot for someone who makes that kind of argument.

Not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Not at all. But when it comes to my daughters, I don’t put blinders on their eyes about the world they live in and what it’s about. I don’t shove anything down their throats, as “believers” can do. I know, I am one, in Christ, and I always try to deal in truth. Does it make me cringe to think that my stunningly gorgeous daughters are going to have sex eventually, absolutely. But I’m not naive. We can agree on one thing, I’m not going to rely on anyone other than myself and my wife to teach my kids about the world (sex, etc.). But nor will I put blinders on them.

Ann and Nancy Wilson, the music duo known as Heart, sent a cease-and-desist notice to the McCain-Palin campaign Thursday afternoon after their hit “Barracuda” was used without permission during the Republican National Convention.
In an email to Entertainment Weekly, they said, “Sarah Palin’s views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song ‘Barracuda’ no longer be used to promote her image…[It] was written in the late ’70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women…There’s irony in Republican strategists’ choice to make use of it there.”

Sarah Palin left her town in massive debt.
Sarah Palin cut education funding for special needs children.

Posted by: Megan | September 5, 2008, 2:43 pm 2:43 pm

This country had better be very afraid.
John McCain has become so cynical that he has surrounded himselves with advisors who are willing to start up a culture war in this country in their blind desire to keep the White House
These people are bamking on whippping up angst against the media and female pent up angst and channel all that phony baloney elite stuff and packaging it in the strong voice and Tina Fey like comfortable personage of Gov Sarah Palin
We ALL have to get the facts out there -
This is NOT a media conspiracy against a poor little woman – this is a completely unqualified person who has extereme social views – no world view and could very well be the President of the United States within the next four years.
Sarah Palin has told a series of falsehoods in her two major appearances before the public
Big falsehoods – and small ones – but a pattern
1: She was Ted Stevens Alaska campaign rep in 2006 – and then she distanced herself when he ws indicted
2: She was for the Bridge to Nowhere until it became the laughingstock of the country and then she was against it 3: BUT KEPT THE MONEY FOR THE STATE OF ALASKA FOR HER OWN PROJECTS)
4: Earmarks: As Mayor of Wasilla she hired Jack Abramoff’s firm to lobby for her and got $37m in earmarks for a town of 5,000 people (in 1996 when she was elected). As Gov of Alaska she applied for $1.9 Billion in earmarks
5: She did NOT sell the Gov jet on Ebay – it appeared on Ebay for a day and was sold privately as a great loss to the State. It is now used for private lease for wealthy hunters
AS TO SARAH PALIN’S BELIEFS:
1: She does NOT believe Global Warming is man made
2: She wants to drill in ANWR
3: She wants CREATIONISM taught in the schools -
4: She pulled all funding for teaching Sex Education in the Alaska School system as she is a proponent of abstinence
5: She believes we are in Iraq as an “Act of God”
6: As Mayor Palin she threatened to fire the long time local librarian of Wasila when books that Mayor Palin wanted pulled from the public library were not pulled
7: As Mayor Palin she left a town she headed fron 1996 with a surplus to a town in debt of $22m in 2002
8: As Gov Palin she gave the keynote address this year to the Alaska Secession Party to which her husband was a member until 2004
9: Sarah Palin was a “pitchfork” person for Pat Buchanan in 1992 and 1996 (you recall Pat’s fire and brimstone speech in 1992 and this woman supported him?)
10: Sarah Palin is against abortion in all case including rape and threat of the mother’s health.
11: Sarah Palin wants Roe V Wade to be reversed
AS TO SARAH PALIN’S Background:
1: As Gov Palin she got her passport for the first time in 2007 to visit Germany/Kuwait
2: Sarah Palin went to five colleges in six years.
3: Gov Palin is under an ethics invetigation in Alaska for pressuring a local commission to fire her former brother in law (a police officer) who was in a nasty divorce/custody dispute with her sister
4: Gov Palin gave a stirring (and frightening) speech about the role of God in Government in June 2008
5:On July 28, 2008: Gov Palin asked a reporter what the VP does
6: When asked about her views on the Irag War in March 2008, Gov Palin said “she hadn’t really thought about it”
7: While citing Hillary Clinton gratuitously in the week she has been on the national stage, Gov Palin called Sen Clinton a “whiner” (March 2008) for complaining about “sexism” in the media
and so much more ……
If these sound like the criteria to be a heartbeat away for a four time cancer survivor who happens to be 72 years old – in a world where the ecomony is crashing and we are engaged in two wars and other bubbling international tensions – then as they say “I have a bridge to sell you”
If the American people do not see the pure cynicism of Candidate McCain in selecting this incredibly polarizing and unqualified person to function as a “weapon of mass DISTRACTION” from the important issues facing the people of this country – then we are in deeper trouble than I thought.
And as a 54 year old woman with children myself – I cannot believe the naked ambition of any parent – male of female – who would not discuss with her family/children in advance a decision that could change all of their lives:
(a) Nicole Wallace of the McCain campaign said on “Morning Joe” that Palin told her kids they were going on a trip to celebrate her parents anniversary to “surprise” them with the nomination announcement in Ohio
(b) Surprise BRISTOL – you are about to become the poster child for unwed teens everywhere
(c) Surprise LEVI – you aren’t even in my family – but you are getting married
(d) Baby PALIN – you are now a prop to be in a hall of 20000 screaming people and be passed among seven people as your mom gives a speech (and lost count the second night)
(e) and sorry – not disputing the baby’s parentage doesn’t change the odd though pattern of a 44 year old woman giving birth to her fifth child who flies 11 hours back to Alaska, does NOT tell the airline she is pregnant (you need permission past the seventh month, does not tell the flight attendants) then drives two hours past every major hospital in Anchorage to give birth in a local hospital.
And went back to work three days after?
THAT is an issue in JUDGEMENT
This is our country – this is NOT AN EPISODE of MR. QUINN MEDICINE WOMAN
—————————–
Before Gov Palin was selected as a running mate, Sen Obama expressed confidence that the american people will select the “President we deserve”
America – the WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING
Choose wisely

I live on the coast of NC, as has my family for generations. I’m totally against drilling off of my coastline. It’s short sighted and doesn’t address the issue of the day – moving away from fossil fuels and removing the grip that big oil has on washington. Another propagandistic short sighted policy that feeds the base red meat simply to get elected so that the R’s can enact policy that is for the rich and against the middle class.

Why in the world would she want to give the media anything after last week? Go back and look at those articles you wrote on this blog last week. Friendly territory or unfriendly, I’m sure she will choose media that’s actually fair and unbiased.
And don’t use Obama speaking to O’Reilly as an example. He insisted it be on John McCain’s nomination speech in order to get attention. He used O’Reilly in a self serving way, not because he was so willing to go into “unfriendly” territory and be open.

Politicians need to answer basic questions like:
You claim that you have commander-in-chief experience… can you give us an example of this.
You claim to support ethics reform… can you tell us anything about troopergate.
You claim to be against earmarks… can you tell us about the lobbyists that you hired.
That’s not bias… that’s just asking legitimate questions about the candidate’s own record. Questions that she ought to be able to answer… because they directly involve events in her life.
But… I guess it is now sexist to ask a woman to elaborate on her own claims.

Posted by: bluto | September 5, 2008, 2:53 pm 2:53 pm

Jake,
There are 60 days until this election and 90% of Americans know very little about Sarah Palin. All we know is the image of her Republicans want to project. We have no idea whether she is qualified to be vice president. The media needs to continue to pursue this issue. She needs to sit down and answer tough questions about decisions she has made as governor, her background, and what are her foreign AND domestic policy positions. Most of America does not know if this woman is qualified. All that is known is she presents a good image and can give a good partisan speech in front of a friendly crowd. The media must continue to pressue on Republicans to have her questioned by news media. If I was betting man I would say the first time she will appear on the air to respond to questions will be on FOX news or Rush Limbaugh. Meantwhile, I think it would wise keep the countdown going. Keep the pressure up. That is the media’s job.

Thanks for persisting in this. I was losing faith a while back that any MSM reporters would be as doggedly thorough with the ambiguities of McCain’s scene as they are with Obama’s. (I can’t describe that faithless feeling: it’s sort of a resignation to “no one in society can stand up to the doubletalk of the old-guard” kind of thing.)
If something truly significant is left vague, we the public really appreciate it when YOU guys are the pitbulls, and let us see how ALL the mugs respond under vigorous, scrutinizing pressure.

Posted by: Vincent | September 5, 2008, 2:58 pm 2:58 pm

I think she’s not answering because McCain doesn’t know what she will say.
She wasn’t properly vetted… so now they are trying to do some damage control.
Normally, a campaign will vet the candidates… and then as they pick one they negotiate their positions between the two candidates to create a coherent message… and they coach the VP to deal with the inevitable questions that will arise.
But McCain chose Palin in a slapdash, ad hoc, sort of pandering waffle to the extreme right…. Then all her dirt came out… and now they need to do damage control. They need to create plausible answers for her contradictory positions… and they need to deal with troopergate.
It’s not Palin’s fault. It’s McCain’s fault. And this fact undercuts the current theme of McCain’s campaign: “Country First.” Palin was a pander to the party… she was not chosen for the good of the country… she was chosen to keep McCain alive with his conservative base.
As the public realizes this… people will be angry… as they should be… about McCain’s sad use of his own biography to depict himself as someone above selfish motives and crass politics.

Republicans are amazing when they support Palin’s avoidance of tough questions. I would they know very little of her themselves. They just want to make the media the bad guys. It is the media’s job to ask tough questions. It is politician’s jobs to face tough questions. Avoidance demonstrates cowardice if you ask me. And defending the avoidance by attacking the media and asking America to ask Palin on faith on John McCain’s recommendation is absurd. She needs to face the media.

She needs to answer questions from the media NOW, not after she’s had a month’s worth of coaching from Joe Lieberman. With every day she avoids the media, the public’s faith that she is ready to step in on day one diminishes. This, more than anything, highlights just how utterly unprepared to be Vice President she is. She can’t even answer questions from journalists without extensive preparation and coaching.
Joe Biden is going to slaughter her at the debates.
The MSM needs to keep asking these questions. WHY IS SARAH PALIN TOO AFRAID TO ANSWER QUESTIONS? Is reading a speech from a script written by someone else the only thing she is remotely capable of?
Obama sat down with O’Reilly – going into conservative territory without fear. And he held his own. Can Palin do the same? If so, why is she hiding like a coward right now?

just as the tax rates in Obama-land
are the highest in the country!
just as the “present” votes emitted by Obama in both the state and US senates… are among the highest in the country.
One thing nice about Sarah:
When she and McCain win, it will NOT be because either one of them was in the pocket of the of the media.
It will be because they are the best of the lot…… (aside from Hillary, of course, who was tossed aside by the powerful pelosi and slightly deranged dean)

I bet that is why McCain won’t let her talk to the press.
They are going to need to figure out a way to get a handle on this woman.
I think McCain is trying to figure out how to stay in the race after this really bad choice.

You people on the left and in the MSM just flat do not get it do you?
Sarah Palin is the Queen of Rope-a-Dope. She allowed you to lower expectations before her speech then she killed it.
Now the campaign is pretending like she is afraid to speak to the press. But did you see Sarah Palin on the CNBC Interview? She is amazingly smart and connects one-on-one even better than in a speech.
She will OWN you in a press interview like Meet-the-Press, she is just rope-a-doping you into thinking she is afraid.
You guys never learn.

The media must be able to ask questions of political candidates. Presenting propaganda and political speeches only within the media being to question approaches fascism. Obama, Biden, and McCain have all faced the media. Why not Palin? Meantime, the days are counting off until election day..

Here is the # problem the Left has with Palin.
There are a hell of a lot more people in America like Sarah Palin than there are like Obama or Clinton.
They like her – she can relate – they see themselves in her and her success becomes their success.

I want her to talk to the media because I want her to tell me what her stances are on the economy. From hearing what her “family values” are, I probably won’t be voting for her because, as a female, I believe I have the right to make choices about my own body.
However, I am open to listening to her, if she will actually talk about her stances, and not merely try to rip into the Democrat’s platform.
My ears are open,

Posted by: Just Curious | September 5, 2008, 3:21 pm 3:21 pm

Bill Mitchell,
Was the CNBC interview where she said she did not know what the Vice President did every day? Facing questions as governor and facing questions as vice presidential candidate are two different perspectives. If she is so confident then she should be giving as many interviews as possible. 90% of Americans know very little about her. She needs to be asked tough questions to see if she is indeed ready to handle the office.

Posted by: indy_voter | September 5, 2008, 3:21 pm 3:21 pm

Posted by: Mack | September 5, 2008, 3:22 pm 3:22 pm

Here’s how it’s all gonna go down.
Within a few weeks, the entire MSM will be screaming WHY WON’T PALIN TALK TO US? WHAT IS SHE HIDING!?
Then Palin will unexpectedly agree to do Meet-The-Press. There will be HUGE interest because the MSM has claimed she is afraid like there was huge interest in her speech becuase the MSM claimed she was a lightweight.
Then Palin will knock it out of the park again and once again, the MSM will realize they have pawns of McCain’s plan all along.
It’s called Political Judo – using the opponents strength and weight against them.

Lora,
To say the media is biased is ludricrous but of course it hits home with the conservative base. John McCain sprung a surprise which naturally creates in finding out who this women really is because she is unknown. Now, you blame the media for that interest and try to say it is okay for her hide from questions. And you expect non-Republicans to accept her on “faith”. It borders on childlishness and is not how how it is done in American politics.

When introduced by John McCain as her running mate Governor Palin said “I told Congress thanks, but no thanks” on the Bridge to Nowhere. She repeated that “I told Congress thanks, but no thanks,” line in her speech. In fact the famous “Bridge to Nowhere” funding earmark place in the federal budget by Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens was eliminated by Congress before Palin became Governor. She told Congress nothing. She told the public a lie.

Alaska is the most socialist state in the republic.
Per capita, Alaskans are the largest beneficiaries of the redistribution of wealth.
And Palin was an active and appreciative recipient of this scheme. Her record shows that she didn’t oppose the Bridge to Nowhere. She took and kept every penny that the US govt gave her and she spent it in her state.

Vitrually every top McCain campaign adviser had been a paid lobbyist for special interests, including the oil companies and tobacco interests he claims he fought. Why should she talk to the media? Thanks to the media’s obsession with harmful minutiae regarding Republicans, I now know more about Sarah Palin than I know about Barack Obama, and I hadn’t heard the name Sarah Palin until 11 days ago! If she wants to freeze them out, let them whine and complain! When she does talk, all the sycophants in the press say she is “attacking” Obama. What a bunch of hypocrites. Women at the national level are making fools of themselves and setting women back 100 years with their devotion to Obama and shunning of Palin. Oprah, Andrea Mitchell, Sally Quinn. Apparently “choice” for women means THEIR choice only.

Posted by: bluto | September 5, 2008, 3:51 pm 3:51 pm

Obama likes to vote PRESENT? Just to set the facts before you:
Voting “present” on a bill means you agree with most but not all of a proposition–it is a distinct alternative to yes and no which many legislators employ, a firm approval with slight resevations.

Posted by: Vincent | September 5, 2008, 3:51 pm 3:51 pm

It’s interesting all the comments about Palin needing handlers, teachers, advisers, etc. All politicians have them (including the One) … is it really that unfair that she have some time to get into synch with the McCain campaign (and yes talking points) before dealing with the media?
I know it seems like a lifetime, but it’s been a week. And, a week where there was also other business to deal with. If she’s not out in another week, call out the hounds – but for right now, seems like overkill.

However, there are also only 60 days left in this campaign to get to know who she is and what her qualifications are. He’s also never had VETO power. Look, W is the biggest dumb that has ever sat in the oval office (please defend him so we can start a nice McSame dialogue). Obama is smart with great ideas and has a great background and resume for the job. Palin has ideological rhetoric, which is ok for folks like yourself.
But, Barak’s campaign is not about him, it’s about mobilizing folks like myself to knock on doors and talk to folks about real issues affecting them, not about platitudes and ideology and scaring people.

Posted by: SgtPepper | September 5, 2008, 4:11 pm 4:11 pm

It has been seven days since Sarah Palin was introduced to the public with the self uttered claim “I told the Congress thanks, but no thanks on that Bridge to Nowhere.” Since the earmarks for funding the “bridges to nowhere” were eliminated from the federal budget by Congress a year before Palin became Governor, that statement is false. It has been seven days since she said it, and the media has not reported that fact, what good would it do the public to give the media access to Palin. They can’t call a lie that is on tape and in the Congressional Record for what it is.

Posted by: ricky | September 5, 2008, 4:12 pm 4:12 pm

Bill Mitchell,
Choosing to avoid the media, then bashing the media because of their interests, to heighten interest later is political gamemanship. If this indeed the plan then it is childish. I thought Palin and McCain were reformers who would clean up childish tactics such as those? Republicans do not want to have serious debate. They simply want to compare images. Always have since the days of Reagan. That is why I have not voted Republican since then.

Mack, I’m not arguing in favor of Obama. I am railing against the last 8 years of shameful leadership.
I had hoped that this year’s GOP convention would just be a three day long public apology for the mess they have made of this country. But it wasn’t. They still think things are better than ever.
And if you agree, then vote for McCain. I’m not out to change minds. I don’t need to change anyone’s mind. Especially not when McCain’s policies have very little to offer working and middle class people.

Dr. Zoon brings up a good point. Sarah Palin has a degree that would qualify her to be a member of the media she is avoiding. The media has not even figured out and reported that her opening statement “I told Congress thanks, but no thanks on that Bridge to Nowhere” is a lie. The earmarks to build it were eliminated by Congress a year before Palin was Governor. She should have no fear in facing the media.

Posted by: ricky | September 5, 2008, 4:23 pm 4:23 pm

Mack,
How much koolaid did you drink? Everything starts with ideas, with philosophy. Obama has a PHD in Constitutional Law, and is an elected Senator from IL. I’m fairly certain he knows how the system works.
What does “do” mean? Please explain to the rest of us rather than just spewing the party line. When John McCain (voted with Bush 90% of time – please defend) “does” or has “done,” what does that mean? They have both sponsored legislation and ensured passing of that legislation. McCain has just been elected more times, ie, more of an insider, than Obama. McCain was a POW, Obama worked with middle class and poor. Both are admirable. Both are experienced. Both could be pretty good Presidents (you can’t say that because of the amount of koolaid you’ve absorbed). The problem with McCain is that he is wrong for this moment. he’s trying to “change” the very ideological philosophy that he has exercised for 30+ years. It’s a broken philosophy that is killing the middle class (folks like you and I).

Posted by: Confused | September 5, 2008, 4:23 pm 4:23 pm

Rather than continue to bash Obama/Biden, can someone who supports McCain put forth clear policy that he/Palin propose to dig us out of this economic funk? Or, do you view our economy like you do the environment, made up?
Please, I’m really interested to learn more. I didn’t learn anything during the RNC convention. Not one thing. nothing specific. not one original idea. PLease, someone, share the wisdom, the vision.

“The problem with McCain is that he is wrong for this moment. he’s trying to “change” the very ideological philosophy that he has exercised for 30+ years. It’s a broken philosophy that is killing the middle class (folks like you and I).”
This is the same guy that was almost on Kerry’s ticket 4 years ago. Does that prove that he is willing to cross party lines? All the ideas in the world don’t mean jack if you don’t execute. Obama has shown no evidence of executing in his past. As I said he is a talker not a doer.

“Palin won’t submit to a formal interview anytime soon. She may take some questions from local news entities in Alaska, but until she’s ready — and until she’s comfortable — which might not be for a long while…”
Ummm, I’m a wee bit confused. If she is going to take questions from news entities in Alaska (???) does that mean she is running for Vice-President of Alaska? I mean, I know her husband wants Alaska to secede; does this mean she shares his view? Because if she is running for Vice-President of Alaska, I’ll stop worrying right now. On the other hand,if indeed she is running for VP of the entire country, we don’t have “a long while” to wait for her to start answering questions on her own, without a script. We need to know her views. Is the media seriously going to stand still for this crap? Jake, come on. You guys have got to do your job.

Posted by: SgtPepper | September 5, 2008, 4:32 pm 4:32 pm

Mack,
You actually asked a decent question. No, I wasn’t going to vote for McCain before and it doesn’t matter what Palin says. In my opinion Republicans are to blame for the mess this country is and with all their bluster and chest poundering are really out of touch with working family issues. So whatever questions McCain and Palin answer will not sway me. I have been around too long to fall for empty rhetoric. Obama is a change simply because he is not a Republican. With that said….I still find it troubling that with 90% of the American people not knowing who Palin really is Republicans expect Palin to be accepted on faith or because she is a “regular person” or because she is a symbol instead of whether she has the capability to run this country. I also find it troubling that Republicans think it is okay for a candidate to duck the media. It seems to me that once again Republicans are trying to steal an election by scaring folks of Obama and presenting images with little substance as they did with GWB. Republicans understand all too well that Americans can be easily manipulated if the media is controlled. That is why the media must do its job here. Ask the tough questions. She should answer the tough questions. So should McCain. And if they are elected the country will be better for having these folks, warts and all, brought out into the open…And the same goes for Obama and Biden…

The McCain campaign can make Sarah run back to Alaska, but they can’t hide her. She’s going to have to put some meat behind that rhetoric they made her throw out at us during her convention speech.
All is fair in love, war, and politics. Obama supporters have known this for 18 months now. Sucks, doesn’t it?

Aston,
You’re quick to judge. I’ve never accessed KOS in me life.
Every year around 7,500 people apply to Harvard Law School. Roughly 560 students matriculate with, on average, a 3.8 undergrad GPA and a 99th percentile LSAT score. After 1L year studying legal theory, around 40 of the best students are appointed to Harvard Law Review based on their first year grades and writing. Law Reviews are highly competitive student run scholarly journals considered mandatory by many for high-end legal careers. For the 7% that make it on to Law Review, 2L year is more legal theory plus highly detailed editing of emerging legal scholarship pending publication in the journal. At the end of 2L year, one member of Law Review is elected to be the next year’s Editor-in-Chief by the existing members. The Editor-in-Chief then runs the process of producing the next year’s editions of the journal. Since 1887, 121 people have been appointed Editor-in-Chief of Harvard Law Review. There were more than 7,000 Rhodes Scholarships granted during the same period.
In other words, it ain’t easy. it’s not PTA, that’s for sure.

Executive and Legislative experience are both of equal value; neither trumps the other in political terms.
What matters is that Obama has been tested by overwhelming scrutiny, and also his experience is of a much broader base–Legal, Senatorial, Professorial, and yes, as a Community Organizer–and it was in the thick of American politics, not the backwoods of Alaska.
Palin is also apparently naive in terms of experience with Washington proper, and knowledge of foreign policy. She needs to be scrutinized and tested. Then we’ll all know for sure what she’s got, but before that it’s only sensible to be suspicious that she can’t speak without rehearsal.

Oh for Pete’s sake, give the woman a break. Sanctimonious Joe is tutoring her on foreign affairs. That way, she’ll know that if Venezuela attacks us, we should immediately bomb Mexico back to the stone age and ship weapons to Israel. This stuff is going to take a few weeks.

That Palin is really a fast mover.
When she looked through the window and saw a family fracas between her sister and brother-in-law, it took her only 6 months to report the incident to the police, and she even had time to go a meeting!
Now that’s what I call a quick response and multitasking. Everybody can relax now when she’s got the keys of the WH.

Sam,
Obama’s wife is not running for president or vice president. If you’re fine with Laura Bush having her mouth “taped shut” through a failing US economy, rising unemployment, a war instigated by lies while our enemies get stronger and our influence in the world becoming weaker, then Michelle can keep her mouth shut as long as Barack wants it to be.

Those individuals who claim that Governor Sarah Palin used to be a member of the Alaska Independent Party, a party who supports Alaska’s secession from the U. S., might be interested in knowing that Sen. Akaka (D-HI) offered a bill in 2006 that would have given Native Hawaiians their own race-based, sovereign government. Sen. Akaka acknowledged that had that bill passed it could very well have resulted in Hawaii’s secession from the U. S. Fortunately the Democrats failed to end the filibuster. But Sen. Obama and Sen. Biden BOTH voted for closure and would have voted FOR the bill had it been brought to the floor for a vote.
It’s one thing to be a member of a party that supports secession. It’s quite another to actually VOTE for a bill that would likely result in secession of a state.
NOTE: It was actually Todd Palin not Governor Sarah Palin who was a member of the AIP. She has been a member of the Republican Party since 1982. And there is NO evidence that she was ever a member of the AIP Todd Palin has been a registered Independent since 2002.

John Doe, the invasion of Iraq was NOT instigated by lies. THAT in itself is a lie. Have you even read the 2002 Joint Resolution to Authorize the Use of United States Armed Forces Against Iraq?
President Bush rescinded the 1991 cease fire due to the 12 years of Saddam Hussein’s failure to comply with the conditions of the cease fire. Whether Iraq had WMDs or not is irrelevant. Besides, many Democrats claimed that Iraq had WMDs back in 1998 when Congress gave President Clinton the authorization for regime change in Iraq. Some Democrats even said that Iraq posed an “imminent threat.”

I think you are all being very sexist and you should just give Caribou Barbie some time to learn at the feet of the master. They need time to teach her all about current events in Czechoslovakia and also how to find the Iraq/Pakistan border on a map. You know, no one is just born knowing this stuff.

2 years of campaigning and finally the ‘one’ goes on a show that doesn’t kiss his a##, and there is a big difference between Palin and Obama, with Obama just like with Michele who went on the View and had a list of things they couldn’t talk about, the media went out it’s way to make Obama look good even debates they were not allowed to ask him any tough questions ( ABC’s debate the backlash from the messiah’s followers) with Palin the media is gunning for her probably ask ” Prime Minister of some dot on the map’s name, so why should the McCain camp give you guys access when Obama is the least accessible campaign and he still gets the better coverage.

She should agree to hold a press conference on Oprah. Better yet, she should hold a press conference and invite only those outlets that didn’t write a sexist article or mention anything about her daughter. That way two media outlets will show up and get to answer all the questions.
What they really mean to ask is: We want to try to stump her by asking her who the Preident of Turkmenistan is and then mock her lack of world knowledge. Her speech was direct to the American people. The internet provides the same. The MSM doesn’t like directness……they want to filter the message before it reaches the masses.

It is obvious that the republican party has been completely taken over by the Christian right. It started in 2000 and 2004 and now with the selection of Sarah Palin, the take over is complete. It should be obvious over the last 8 years that competence is of no concern for the religious right. They just want one of their own to be in the White House. Competence be damned. It is also rather amusing to witness the contortions regarding abortion and working mothers from the Dobson crown and the O’Reilly’s. So I guess not only competence be damned, but credibility as well.

Posted by: Link | September 6, 2008, 11:02 am 11:02 am

There’s a heck of a big difference between going out and answering questions with your own personal opinion as an elected official versus answering them for another person. She has to absorb decades of information about McCain and months of speeches and positions he’s taken during this campaign in weeks. Any campaign will spend inordinate amounts of time briefing a new running mate before throwing them out on the road with anything but their stump speech. Granted, if she doesn’t start showing up on these shows next week or the week after, there are legitimate concerns about why she is being hidden.

Posted by: AmericanPatriot | September 6, 2008, 11:04 am 11:04 am

So essentially she’s like some sort of “spokesmodel” for the campaign — she’s allowed to read canned material and look pretty, but her own thoughts and ideas are strictly off limits.
Women deserve better. Republicans deserve better.

Posted by: fjfjdvdv | September 6, 2008, 11:46 am 11:46 am

For a few weeks, yes, she will be little more than a spokesperson. So will Joe Biden. For better or worse, the campaign is led, ideologically, by the top of the ticket. Everything is very carefully orchestrated. Heck, put Biden’s speeches and Obama’s speeches recently next to each other, they’ll be saying the exact same things. So will Palin and McCain when they do separate campaigning.
Its the old addage that if you say something long enough, loud enough, and often enough, it becomes truth. Messages, on both sides of the campaign, are so very tightly controlled. But that’s not to say the VP brings nothing to the table, on either side. Heck, Palin was instrumental in convincing McCain on the virtues of offshore drilling. We know she’s in favor of responsible ANWR drilling while McCain has been hesitant to support such a move. But I wouldn’t be too surprised to see McCain swing around to that position in the debates.
Its the same thing wherever you work. If you go off and promise a customer (we, the voters) something other than what the boss told them, you’re gonna get canned. But you can take your boss aside in private and say, “Hey, this is what I think we’re capable of and this is what we need to change.” Call me a political cynic, but I don’t believe anything they say on the campaign trail is anything but scripted. Everything has been focus group tested, run by policy advisors, and practiced dozens of times before we see it on TV.

Posted by: AmericanPatriot | September 6, 2008, 12:10 pm 12:10 pm

if you guys don’t force this issue and isist that this woma submit herself to the same vetting process as every other candidate for office, we will lose faith in th epress and believe that this election is racist, sexist abd biased in ways unheard of. John McCain cannot force this woman down our throats without information about who she is and how and why she has made and will make professional decisions that will directly and indirectly affect our lives/
you press guys need to get busy, if she won’t sit down then you need to find the news she is hiding…..

I believe the root of the problem is that journalism is dead in america. All I see is screaming matches between supposedly opposing points of view, each trying to outdo the other in outrageousness. I would not put her in front of any one except perhaps C-span, Charley Rose or the guy that moderated the debate between her, Murkowsky and the other candidate in the 2006 election (he was pretty good). Otherwise the rest of the journalists on TV today are nothing more than a bunch of punks.

Caribou Barbie can’t stand up to CNN, so how can she handle Putin and Iran?
What a complete utter joke the GOP has become. They push this woman to the front of the stage, then quickly rush her off to a secret location where she can study “Vice President for Dummies”
Now, if Obama did this, you wingnuts would be SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER, but it’s okay if you are a Republican.
Of course the average GOP voter is just another pavlovian dog who salivates on cue when told to. They don’t think, they just obey.

So, Palin is supposedly ready to be the Vice President (and maybe the President) of this country, but she is not ready to talk to reporters??? Alllllrightythen.

Posted by: Cathy | September 6, 2008, 8:45 pm 8:45 pm

I find it ironic that Democrats are trying to compare their Presidential candidate to the Republican’s Vice Presidential Candidate. Especially when Obama’s first instinct during the Russian territorial expansion action into Georgia was to call for “Georgia and Russia to show restraint”. Especially when Obama is willing to sit down with Ahmadinejad without preconditions. I don’t care what side of the political spectrum you fall, the Office of the President has certain powers of presence and meeting with foreign leaders, hostile or otherwise, lends credibility to them. Even when negotiating Matters of State with the former Soviet Union, pre-meetings were conducted so the US could negotiate from a position of power. We know McCain will confront world leaders with backbone. Looking at Gov. Palin’s record of standing up to Republican Party higher-ups and other state officials in Alaska, I think one can argue that Palin has that same strength. I’m not worried about international matters if McCain/Palin is elected. I truly wish, from a non-partisan, American-oriented position, that Obama will have those same abilities if he is elected. But I’m just not sure right now that he does. Maybe something will change between now and Nov 4, but right now, I’m just not convinced.

Posted by: AmericanPatriot | September 6, 2008, 9:03 pm 9:03 pm

I recommend the McCain campaign continue to keep her in the “Candidate Protection Program”. It just shows how unqualified she is to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

Posted by: cincyr | September 6, 2008, 10:26 pm 10:26 pm

Good job. Keep counting and drawing attention to this. The notion that a VP candidate would go into hiding from the press is absurd. She’s a joke. Not a funny one, unfortunately.

Posted by: MHer | September 6, 2008, 10:29 pm 10:29 pm

It’s as simple as this: the reason McCain will not let Palin speak is because he knows she won’t be able to answer questions intelligently because she has no experience.
And that will scare the hell out of everyone knowing that she could be a heart beat away from the presidency; talk about nuts! Thank goodness the American people are smarter than that.

Here’s a thought! Why doesn’t the American press show some respect for a change and talk to our country’s ONLY other female VP candidate, Geraldine Ferraro, while waiting to interview Palin? Wouldn’t it make sense to touch base with her and get her thoughts on Palin about now? Or is everyone afraid that she might actually be a strong woman who thinks for herself and not simply toe the party lines? Either way…where is Ferraro? Was she even invited to Obama’s convention in Denver? What is happening to MY party!!!??

Hey Concerned in Ohio… that’s the point! At least he went on O’Reilly to answer questions from one of his most adversarial “reporters” (and I use that term loosely in this case). Yes, bullies are rude, vile, mean, obnoxious people who love to interrupt which is exactly who O’Reilly is and other people have more courtesy and tact. Also, all the idiots asking why Michelle hasn’t gone on interviews – well, uhh… last I checked she wasn’t running for any office and I don’t recall Nancy, Barbara, Hillary nor Lauara being grilled on Face the Nation, etc. when their husbands were running for POTUS. LMAO!

Posted by: Tina | September 7, 2008, 5:53 am 5:53 am

If this continues until November, this is a huge problem for McCain. However, I suspect she will be taking interviews within the next few weeks.
No, she’s not ready to be President, but 1) she isn’t running for President and 2) she’s still more ready than Obama. Please tell me what Obama has done besides run for office?

Posted by: JimBeam | September 7, 2008, 8:36 am 8:36 am

Here are some of the things Obama has done “besides running for president:”
After college, community organizer
Saw that helping people would require changing laws and politics
Not only got into Harvard Law School without benefit of family connections, but then became president of Harvard Law Review
Chicago – civil rights lawyer, taught constitutional law
Illinois State Senator for eight years
US Senate:
-first law passed was a measure to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent
-Veteran’s Affairs Committee
-worked on non-proliferation efforts, to help keep our country safe
-alternative fuels and higher fuel standards, to help keep our nation safe and independent
He has worked for over a decade now to help less fortunate people, veterans, and address the real safety issues that this nation faces

I can’t believe someone actually suggested that Geraldine Ferraro be interviewed in lieu of interviewing Sarah Palin. That would be as useful as interviewing Jack Kemp.

Politics and digging truth and dirt, destroying enemies…is nothing being unleased on “poor Sarah” as something new in intent or degree.
Get you heads out of your….”sandboxes.”
And let her put on one of “Hillary’s pants suits” and face the Washington correspondents, and not some pre-orchestrated media interview…like the ones where you get the questions before the answers…”Cone of silence anyone?”

The GOPUSA is behind the boycott to have Palin interviewed on the Oprah show. There reason is because Palin is a woman, and that the Oprah show caters to women. One of Palin lead boycotters said that Palin is breaking a glass ceiling for women.
Obama could use that same argument as to why he should be on Oprah” show. He is after all, the first ever nominated Afro- American candidate in a country that not long ago legally endorsed slavery, discrimination against blacks and other minorities.
But notice Obama campaign is not doing this, he is not using his race as a tactic to gain support. His campaign is not boycotting any group or business by using his race as an excuse to force a hand picked interview. obtain favorable is not saying things like; there saying that because I’m black, there picking on obama and asking him tough questions because he’s black or if he were white he would be considered qualified.
Is Palin using her sex to be treated differently? Is she asking for preferential treatment because she is a woman? Oprah, is not allowing any candidates on her show to be interviewed, democrat or republican of which has nothing to do with Palin sex. She announced her decision months ago way before the world even heard or knew about Palin, as she just appeared on the scene a couple weeks ago.
If Palin wants to be interviewed so bad, why won’t she be interviewed by the tons of qualified professional news anchorage personnel that have been knocking on her door for the opportunity? Is it because she does not want to be asked the hard questions like the other candidates? I think the Palin boycott is more cynical, if Oprah interviewed Palin on her show and asked tough questions, she would be attacked by the GOPUSA who asked for the interview in the first place, as not being fair to Palin because of her support of Obama.
So I say to Palin and her campaign, move on and get Palin interviewed by the appropriate news forum. And stop boycotting Oprah show for enforcing policy that was already in place way before the world even heard of a Palin. The GOPUSA is very hypocritical, for they use sexism when it’s convenient!
