Palin to Meet World Leaders, Bono

ABC News’ Imtiyaz Delawala Reports: Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin will participate in a series of meetings with foreign leaders gathered this week for the U.N. General Assembly in New York, according to the McCain campaign.

Serving as an introduction of Palin to the types of foreign leaders she would regularly interact with as vice president, on Tuesday, Palin will meet Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai and Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, as well as former US Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger. On Wednesday, Palin will meet with Iraq President Jalal Talabani and Pakistan’s newly-elected President Asif Ali Zardari.

Palin has not met any foreign heads of state in her capacity as governor of Alaska, and has been criticized for her lack of foreign policy experience. She first received a passport two years ago, before visiting American troops in Kuwait and Germany in 2007.

Palin will be joined by Sen. John McCain for joint meetings on Wednesday with the presidents of Georgia and the Ukraine, as well as with the prime minister of India. The Republican running mates will also meet Wednesday with U2 lead singer Bono, who has been active in international humanitarian issues.

When asked by ABC News’ Charlie Gibson whether she had ever met a foreign head of state, Palin responded, "I have not and I think if you go back in history and if you ask that question of many vice presidents, they may have the same answer that I just gave you. But, Charlie, again, we’ve got to remember what the desire is in this nation at this time. It is for no more politics as usual and somebody’s big, fat resume maybe that shows decades and decades in that Washington establishment, where, yes, they’ve had opportunities to meet heads of state."

In fact, every vice president over the last 30 years had met with foreign heads of state before being elected.

Sarah has no shame. I only wish she would stop that “folksy” slang accent/language she uses and show us how a person in the know is really supposed to speak. It feels like she’s always talking to her “peeps.” I am not your peep. I would like you to sound just a bit more educated than I am if you plan to run the country…oh, that’s right, I do have a master’s degree, so I am more educated than she is!

I do not care how many heads of state the girl meets. She still scares the heck out of me. McCain demonstrated his inability to react in a crisis last week as well.

It should be interesting to see these world leaders look for a polite way to say What an empty headed, blank slate she is. and what a scary prospect of having this woman in the role of president.
Palin is the subject of much mirth in papers overseas – when they are not absolutely horrified by the prospect of a veep palin, let alone as president.
I can see much of the world praying deeply that the American people do not make the same dumb mistake as they did in 04 by voting for the stupid ones over the intelligent ones.
And praying we actually do something smart for a change in electing Obama.

Palin can stare down Chavez and Ahmadinejad. Obama wants to diplome with them.

I’m certain the world leaders will be impressed that Palin’s proximity to Russia qualifies her on foreign affairs.
I assume they’ll ask her about what vital part of Russia she can see.
(hopefully they won’t ask for her views on banning books, or any of her other lunatic fringe religious views)

Posted by: Gus | September 22, 2008, 9:26 am 9:26 am

Just handshakes and personal meeting is not going to be engouh to give her wealth of foreign policy experience. They need to start her with geography lessons first and follow it up with history lessons.

I had the opportunity to shake hands with a world leader once… I suppose I can run a country now….

Posted by: Brian | September 22, 2008, 9:29 am 9:29 am

Why is this news? Shouldn’t we be looking for someone for whom meeting world leaders is not an event but part of their job profile?

Posted by: RT | September 22, 2008, 9:30 am 9:30 am

Hey Melsey, your criticism of Sarah Palin’s accent/language shows how small
minded people can truly be (with or without a master’s degree). Palin is just revealing her true self….a real person with good values and beliefs.
Most Americans are tired of the “elite on the street” Washington bureaucrats and there double talk. Finally, someone like Palin gives us straight talk and some Americans can’t deal with it. I’m proud to be one of those
“educated” Americans that can understand straight talk. Sorry you can’t.

Sarah Palin Meets with Afghan President Karzai (Transcript)

“Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin will meet next week with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in New York, on the sidelines of the opening of the U.N. General Assembly, according to Afghan officials in Washington.”–Washington Post

TRANSCRIPT:
Palin: Oh, Mr. President, it is such a pleasure to meet you, you’re the first head of state that I have had the opportunity to meet–which is more than many Vice Presidents–and I’m so glad that my first one is an Afghani.
You know, in Trig’s class there was a little Afghani? He was the child of one of the oil executives, and he was so cute, with his little turban runnin’ around, everyone just loved him, and felt for him…
Karzai: Yes.
Palin: And everyone knew that we just had to defend him and keep him free and that’s why I think that with a Palin/McCain…
Palin Aide: (looking up from clipboard) McCain/Palin.
Palin: …McCain/Palin ticket, we can make sure of that, if we have to attack Russia, even, I mean, to keep people free at home, just like we want to keep our people free. We have so much in common! I know you have the problem with the poppies, and I understand so well, Mr. Karzai, because we have the same problem with the crystal meth in Wasilla? And I said “Look, we’ve got to shake this up!” and then that’s just what I said, I said ‘Look, let’s just see what we have in common with these guys!” And that’s just what you could do with the Taliban, Mr. Karzai. They’ve already so moral, and they want people to live by the straight and narrow, and they’ve got the newspapers sayin’ and the schools doin’ lots of the right things. They just need to get some of the right ideas, and pray to the right Lord. And, if they don’t understand, we still have the weapons left over from Iraq, and then we can’t blink, we can’t blink, can we, Mr. Karzai?
Karzai: (Looks at Palin silently without moving his head. Pauses.). Blink?
Palin: Right. The thing is, we just have to hit the ground runnin’, Mr. Karzai. That’s what I do. A few weeks ago I didn’t even know what a Vice President does</i?! That's why I put a clock on my wall–do you have the same clocks as we do in Afghanistan? With the twelve numbers? (points in air to numbers on air clock)–Anyway, I said "I'm gonna measure just how much time I have left here" and that's what you could do, I think, with the war, Mr. Karzai, is to put up a clock so you know just how much time you have left until you finish it. I tell you, Mr. Karzai, it’s such a motivating influence on my staff, the good ones, anyway, they know what they’re supposed to finish and when, they hear me sayin’ “Look at the clock, people, look at the clock, and know what you have left to finish…”
Karzai: Yes.
Palin: And so I said to my husband, Todd–I call him the “First Dude”–Do you have that word ‘Dude’ here in Afghanistan?–maybe it’s like “Khan” or “Emir” or somethin’?–I said to him, ‘Todd, we have to take a look at what’s happenin’ in Afghanistan–before McCain called or any other thing happened–’ cause I saw that Russia was right across from us, and then right next to that you have all the ‘Stans–(counts cross fingers) Kyrgyzstan, oh, what’s the others?–well, you are aware of them, of course, Mr. Karzai (laughs)…
Karzai: (Nods)
Palin: And if we don’t let other people know of what I’m aware of then the world won’t change, Mr. Karzai. I know we have the same goals even if we don’t have the same God yet…(aide touches Palin on shoulder, whispers). ‘Even’, not ‘yet’, I meant ‘same God even, Mr. Karzai, and my point is, we can’t let others stop our choice, which is freedom for those who deserve it, and that’s why I know a Palin/McCain…
Palin Aide: (reaching over to touch shoulder)
Palin: Stop! (brushing aide’s hand off)…McCain/Palin ticket will do just what you want, Mr. Karzai…
Second Palin Aide Approaches: It’s time for your next appointment, Gov. Palin.
Palin: It was so good meeting you, President Karzai, and all of your other people, it was so good meeting you too! Shalom! (waves, exits).
Karzai: (to his aide, in Pashto): She makes the last one look like the Grand Mufti.

But then again I am not running for President or Vice President.

Economic crisis threatens all of us and John McCain offered his own recovery plan (he had it ready because he knew and talked about this forthcoming crisis way back in 2006 but the Democrats said no). Obama voted “present” again. Said he would have to think about this…or in other words get some direction. Just like the Senate he voted “present” —this is not leadership!
Back on May 25, 2006 John McCain spoke “I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole. I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation………Barack Obama and other Democrats OPPOSED and did nothing.

Lets not mention the mess she left her town in as Mayor she had a sports complex built only she forgot one big item. She forgot you need clear title to the land you build it on. Not smart the town of Wasill is still in litigation for that major blunder by Palin, now how big a blunder do you want that idiot to make in Washington???? Pushing the wrong button in Washington could start a nuclear war…. I think she needs to just go home and screw up Alkaska more.

This election is going to be the litmus test for race relations in this country and exactly how far we have come. It is just ridiculous the overwhelming support McCain an Palin gets in light of their gross failures and mistakes… Obama is held to a much higher standard than others only because he is black.. mind you… he is half white and was raised by TWO white women. This country should be ashamed at the hypocrisy of this election… Obama who is not perfect is the obvious choice… The republicans are relying heavily on the following to win:
1) Racism of the uneducated and misinformed and those who are just downright biggoted and racist.
2) Lies… McCane and Palin have showed more than anyone else that they are prepared to lie to win… if they win… they will fit right into Washington.. Remember THERE ARE WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION.. how quick we forget
3) Bully the Media. Could you imagine what the Repubs and MSM would have done if Obama chose a Palin.. Simply.. His campaign would be over. Imagine NO questions for Palin to this date… and the media is letting them get away with it.
4) Connections… Do you people really think the wealthy in this country are going to sit down and allow Obama to come in and raise their taxes.. The status quo are always gonna want every penny… The republicans represent the wealthiest 2% of this country who do not give a hoot about the poor or shrinking middle class
5) Hypocrisy.. Could you imagine if Obama had a pregnant teenager with her black lover on stage what the republicans would say… Game Over…
I am saddened and trust that right thinking people would vote their conscience and hearts for Hope and Change… Obama represents the future… Young People, ROCK the vote and lets change America for the better…

Ann – McCain has spent years being the anti regulation on these very banks. I believe has voted for the deregulation tha got us into this mess. He screamed, got red in the face and threatened to fire a guy he had no control over last week. Obama was calm, cool and looked like a man trying to solve the problem rather than a kneejerk reaction and a temper fit.

Helpful Information for Sarah Palin to use in her Visits with Foreign Leaders:
1. People in most countries do not hunt and kill moose.
2. Only from Alaska can one see Russia. No other US states can see Russia from their land.
3. Do not attempt to convert President Karzai to Christianity. He will not like that. However, you might mention your friend, the Kenyan Witch Hunter that you credit for your becoming Governor.
4. Do not use the word “redneck” among diplomats. They may misconstrue what you are saying.
5. Do not offer President Karzai any of your children’s leftover cocaine or other drugs. Karzai has plenty of heroin available back home.
6. Afghanistan is a country in Asia. Alaska is a state, not a country, although we understand you and Todd want to make it its own country.
7. Avoid Alaskan “redneck” and slang words like “Howdy,” “Y’all” and “Miss Alaska Beauty Pageant.” They translate to swear words in other languages.

Dear Jenny,
“I do not care how many heads of state the girl meets. She still scares the heck out of me. McCain demonstrated his inability to react in a crisis last week as well.”
Well, your post establishes two things:
1. You, and your good-time Obamaton buddies, have a low threshold when it comes to being “scared.” I’ll bet you faint when you see a mouse too. Here’s what’s really scary: a backbenching senator, with only 143 working days on the job, who’s already written two autobiographies, declared lengthy periods of his life “off limits,” and thinks there’s “57 states,” believing he’s actually ready to be President.
2. You’ve obviously overlooked the fact that Barack Obama was (and is) part of the recent Wall Street problem. Dare I mention how much money he got from places like Lehman Brothers? McCain was warning about this “crisis” at least as far back as 2005, but who do you suppose helped shoot down the corrective legislation he proposed?
Hmmmmmmmm?

Posted by: MarkJ | September 22, 2008, 10:28 am 10:28 am

Hate to ruin you liberal’s day, but the polls are closing again with momentum to McCain:
- DailyKos (which polls only 26% Republicans), polled Obama down to 4 points ahead Sunday from 8 points to prior day.
- Gallup polled Obama ahead 4 points down from 6.
- Rasmussen has it +1 Obama for 3 days.
- Battleground has McCain +1 today
I guess America doesn’t appreciate Obama’s “Monday Morning Quarterback” approach to our financial problems.
P.S., Look for Gallup to close to +2 Obama today, down 4 points in two days.
Bottom line, this sucker is tied.

Wanda… The world is changing around us.. Do you care about the next generation… Do you care about where we are in the world view… Do you understand that it takes INTELLECT and WISDOM and JUDGEMENT to run a country… Do NOT confuse yourself… Obama knows his limitations which is why he has NOT surrounded himself with “YES” men… Republicans win at all costs is exactly the proof that they are LIARS… The are relying on you to continue Bush’s legacy… How you voted in the past does not matter… what matters is that you set aside personal bias and TRY to be Objective on the facts before you… if you do that… then you will understand why Obama is the only choice… I do not know what the future holds… but I know I need a THINKER in the white house… the days of “my gut” must be tempered with inclusion… Everyone has a voice… we must take our country back and stop believing the BS the republicans are shoving down out throats. Your bias towards Obama is not from facts.. its from your own personal prejudice… Once McCane and Palin repeal Roe vs Wade, all the women raped or been victims of incest, I hope you will be able to help… as for gay rights… out the door… and remember the economy… who cares about that… oh and the brave men and women dying in Iraq… whats a couple thousand more dead… Country FIRST!!!!!

Wonder, Gianna Jessen did not die from the act of murder. She did not even look at the person who commited the act of murder with hatred and that’s because of her Christian faith. Yes, million people died in Cambodia and in Vietnam after 1975 due to the libs who voted to stop the military fundings. Tought diplomacy my foot! Palin needed to be on Meet the Press, or any News to answer questions the public wants answered. The reason she isn’t is quite plain, McCain doesn’t want the empty head talking and all doubt removed as to her total lack of any ability to be President much less VP.

Biden’s Average Annual Charitable-Gift Total: $369
Sen. Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, have given an average of $369 per year to charities during the past decade, according to tax returns posted today to Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign Web site.
Senator Biden, the Democratic nominee for vice president, claimed $995 in charitable gifts in 2007 on the joint return with his wife. That figure is 0.3 percent of the couple’s claimed income of nearly $320,000.
The 2007 contributions were significantly higher than the couple’s gifts in previous years, which ranged from $120 to $380.
By comparison, Sen. John McCain, the Republican Presidential nominee, in 2007 reported $405,409 in total income and contributed $105,467, or 26 percent of his total income, to charity.
Sen. McCain files a separate return from his wife, Cindy. The totals do not include Ms. McCain’s income or charitable contributions.
Sen. Obama, and his wife, Michelle, donated $240,000 in 2007, or about 5.7 percent of the couple’s $4.2-million in reported income.
Mr. Biden has been rated as the least wealthy U.S. Senator.
Tell me who cares about the people??????????????

Obama has been running for President most of his time in the Senate?
—-
And how long has Sen. John McCain been “running for President”?
I’d say, conservatively, at least 10 years.

He first ran in 2000. Assume he started that first campaign in 1998.
He lost that campaign, but never really stopped running.
So, that means Sen. John McCain has been running for President, without interruption…
…for the past ten (10) years!

She can meet whoever she wants. It doesn’t change the fact that she apparently has not thought about any foreign policy issues ever before. She obtained her passport one year ago for vacation purposes and there is no evidence that she has held any positions on international issues or foreign policy other than the Iraq War surge–which she indicated that she hadn’t thought much about but had heard about on television and felt there should be a time line for withdrawal (which, of course, is inconsistent with her running mate’s position).
Oh, yes, Chavez and Amadenijad are shaking in their boots over dealing with Palin.

Talk about scary. Obama has zero accomplishments to his credit other than winning the Democratic nomination.
Also, how many world leaders did John Edwards meet with before he was Kerry’s running mate? Did Gerry Ferraro meet with anyone outside Queens before Mondale picked her?
Absurd.

Posted by: Tom | September 22, 2008, 11:38 am 11:38 am

We Americans must stand together in this time of great need for the United States of American. We must come to realize that Obama is nothing more than an egotistical harmful person to America is. Taxing the rich and business is a smoke screen used by Obama to tax all Americans with hidden taxes. Obama will be a puppet to his campaign contributors at the cost of taxing all Americans. There is no free ride.
Private interest groups and tax hungry government officials feared seventy-three old President Reagan as a governor of California and later as President of America. Why? They all knew that President Reagan was his own man. John McCain is his own man. The man is John McCain.
Sarah Palin is her own woman. Many are making disgusting comments about Sarah Palin out of fear and envy. The catty women would love to have the opportunity presented to Sarah Palin, but they know in their own hearts it will never happen.
News commentators pick at everything about Sarah Palin because she has what they cannot tolerate in a woman. Sarah has the intellect to be a mayor, a governor, a vice-president and a president of our great nation. Some men fear that Sarah Palin could rise to the highest office and be President of the United States of America. Obama does not have executive experience. Sarah Palin has executive experience.
The ABC News Panel says that it fears John McCain. These weak men fear John McCain and Sarah Palin. These weaklings have forgotten the powers of congress to control a president. The ABC News Panel’s true fears are that a woman may become the President of the United States of America. It does not matter who she is or what her qualifications are they fear a woman. These weaklings of men live in fear that a woman will receive the powers of the President of the United States of America. What boyish sissies the ABC News Panel is.
Any woman that does not vote for Sarah Palin votes against herself. Women must band together and know that a vote for Sarah Palin is a vote for you.
News commentators and writers want you to believe Sarah Palin is not the person for Vice-President. There is fear in their words that Sarah Palin will become the next president of the United States of American. There are men that cannot tolerate the thought of women in high responsible positions. The fear is not on Sarah Palin’s true qualifications, but based only on that she is a woman.
John McCain does not fear women. Obama has less women working in his office. John McCain has more women workers on staff. Obama women workers earn much less than then the men on his staff do. John McCain women workers earn more than the men on his staff do.
I can sense the fear that a woman could actually become president of the United States of America. I am like John McCain and it does not matter to me the sex of the person. As vice-president or president, Sarah Palin can do it for American.
It better to back a woman and not the little no nothing boys that runs against her.

For eight years we have put up with a president that does not have a clue. The thing is that we knew he didn’t have a clue, but we wanted someone we could have a beer with. If something happens to John McCain (Heaven forbid) we will have someone we can shoot a moose with. I hope you guys are ready for what will happen to this country as a result. Be prepared! Everyone keeps going on about experience.
Well…
The CEOs of AIG and Lehmann brothers had a century of experience between them.
They sank their companies, are running off with multi-million dollar golden parachutes, and stuck taxpayers with the bill.
—-
Experience? I’ll take good judgment over experience in these changing times.
Anyone who claims “decades of experience” in these radically changing times is precisely the wrong person to lead this country.
They have decades of the wrong experience.
We need someone who is sober, with fresh ideas.
WE need new leadership.

Obama has been a state senator for 8 years, during which he authored and passed significant legislation, including the most substantive ethics reform in thirty years and bipartisan reform of the very broken death penalty in Illinois. Since joining the US Senate, he has passed more ethics reform legislation, including putting expenditures online (this is exactly what Palin was touting when she said that people should be able to view the US “checkbook” online–guess like other people who only listen to soundbites, she didn’t know Obama had already passed that legislation). He also passed legislation related to missing nuclear materials, along with Republican Senator Lugar.
“Also, how many world leaders did John Edwards meet with before he was Kerry’s running mate? Did Gerry Ferraro meet with anyone outside Queens before Mondale picked her?”
To answer your question simply: yes.
Here’s the info from the WSJ, hardly “biased” toward Obama:
“…you’d have to go back six administrations to the days of the Pentagon Papers to find such a vice president. Spiro Agnew (1969-1973) appears to be the last VP who had no contact with foreign heads of state before becoming vice president.”

To all the liberal geniuses who think the market problem today was caused by the Republicans, let me remind you that Greenspan warned the Democratic congress in 2005 that Fanny Mae and Freddy mac were securing trillions of dollars in high risk loans and where it would lead and proposed a bill that would limit their spending. He also included AIG in that bill. The Democrats along with a handfull of Republicans shot down that bill and told Greenspan he didn’t know what he was talking about.
Congradulations to the liberals, the bailout proposal and govt takeover issued by Paulson and Bush now officially make the USA a socialist country. Barack Hussein Muhammad Obama should be so proud.

When has Obama ever had to make a difficult decision? Whether to choose a Wall street job or be a “community organizer?” To vote “present?” To give a speech? Wow. That’s tough. Too bad they don’t give you Medals of Honor for that kind of bravery!
Obama has NO accomplishments and no resume. Everyone knows it.
And yet, all Democrats can do is make snarky comments about Sarah Palin, the next VP.

Experience vs. Judgement
CEOs of Lehmann brothers & AIG = EXPERIENCE
Sen. John McCain = EXPERIENCE, but no new ideas.
Gov. Palin = “EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE” but no ideas at all
Obama = Judgment & fresh ideas
Biden = Wisdom & Insight.

How – exactly is SEN obama qualified -
seems GOV Palin – a GOV – is OVER a SEN! in experience, leadership, judgment – what else do we need??

Tom, Obama’s resume has been presented ad nauseum. I just posted some of it again. He has passed legislation relating to ethics reform, nuclear materials, and the death penalty, among many, many other things. You might be surprised to know that he introduced legislation on two separate occasions, calling for better regulation of mortgage frauds–in 2006 and in 2007.
In terms of “difficult decisions,” look back just a couple of months to his support of FISA, which was very unpopular within his party. Hey, I wonder, did McCain even bother to show up to vote for that one? You do know he has the highest rate of absenteeism of any current senator, right?
You just don’t like Obama, so you continue to spew lies. I suppose if I were doing really well at the end of these past 8 years, I too might be in the 20% of Americans who think our country is headed in the right direction. Then I too would vote for McCain, and ignore the facts about the other guy.

S Adams, since you put so much faith in Greenspan, I assume that you are not voting for McCain, since Greenspan said his tax cuts would be devastating to the economy.
Also, I don’t know what you’re looking at, but at the end of 2006, Greenspan told Congress: “There is a good chance of coming out of this in good shape, but average housing prices are likely to be down this year relative to 2005. I don’t know, but I think the worst of this may well be over,” (MSNBC.com, 10/9/06).

Mack, Obama is not running on a campaign that states that all earmarks are EVIL. You are clearly accepting McCain’s assertions that all of them are terrible. So, then he has to explain why he put someone on his ticket who has been an expert at getting them. What: is the argument that because she learned to play that system so well that she is now the best person to defeat it?
Besides, even the WSJ confirms that Palin received more in earmarks per workday than Obama–and obviously for the benefit of much fewer people. Yet she insists she’s no longer for them. Bad earmarks, bad!

Palin will gain considerable experience by meeting with the foreign leaders. Her Fox interviews were really good, she has the special capacity to connect with people. When she was asked about the army of lawyers that are in Alaska digging up dirt on her, her answer was: well I know this is all about, I just hope they spend lots of money there and help with our local economy. I like that answer. Give her a chance to make a case for herself, and let her mature. I believe at the end, she will be a great asset for the McCain campaign. I am very confident that McCain will win.

PLUS he’s 72 years old with a history of skin cancer! PALIN left her mayor job in a DEFICIT of $22,000,000.00, she has a 4 year BA degree in COMMUNICATIONS, she can’t run an office, let alone her family. Give me a break. The Republicans get all in a froth about the “present” vote–which like, it or not, is a long tradition in Illinois politics for many reasons–and ignore the fact that their guy DOES NOT EVEN SHOW UP TO VOTE AT ALL. Nope, not even for the veterans bill.

That’s right, Ethel08. I’m not voting for Obama. You’re apparently not voting for McCain and you clearly don’t like Sarah Palin. How exactly does that impact the arguments pro/con?
Your points about Obama’s “resume” are worthless.
Senator “Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac” didn’t have his name isn’t on ANY ethics reform legislation. And, by the way, what is that legislation that he claims to have “sponsored?” Nothing of note. This from a guy who got his start in the Chicago political machine with guys like Bill Ayers (weather underground terrorist) and crooks like Tony Rezko.
If you’re looking for a candidate who wanted something done about the fraudulent accounting practices of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac years ago – that would be JOHN McCAIN. Obama voted against any new regulations that would have impacted Fannie and Freddie. Nice work.
As for FISA, that law has been around for 30 years. After all the blather by the media and Democrats, I don’t know of any Democrats (outside of wing-nuts like Dennis Kucinich) who lobbied openly against re-authorizing it in a time of WAR. What a profile in courage by Obama!
As for the “nuclear material” legislation – that was sSenator Richard Lugar’s bill, not Obama’s. And, it was PASSED UNANIMOUSLY ON A VOICE VOTE. No one was against this bill. Again, what a profile in courage for Obama to support it.
Obama’s resume is paper thin – no matter how many Obama-philes like you want to puff it up.

that’s exatly right ethel08. They try and use it as a talking point. McCain hasn’t been the same since 2000. The Republican brand shaped him over so that way they could get the votes of the more “conservative” base. That’s why they chose Palin for him. They weren’t getting behind him well enough. They didn’t trust him, and I really think he doesn’t like Huckabee well enough after the primaries to have picked him to sure up the vote.

The elitist obamabots are still charging prejudice and racism.
Look. Republicans will not vote for Obama because he is an unreconstructed tax-and-spend liberal. I personally believe that’s what he wants us to think he is because the reality is vastly worse, but that’s just me.
As far as Republicans are concerned, his skin color has nothing to do with it. I can virtually guarantee that the first black president will be Republican.
Obama’s biggest problem is with the liberal mindset that the oppressed must be rescued – by them. That comes from an unadmitted, maybe even unrecognized, but deeply felt sense of superiority -moral and intellectual – as is so clearly illustrated by the comments above.
Obama’s big problem is that so many of his “supporters”, in their heart of hearts, view him just as Biden himself described him -a “clean, articulate black man” and will never pull the lever in the privacy of the booth.

Posted by: JRinLA | September 22, 2008, 12:51 pm 12:51 pm

Tom, you clearly believe the McCain spin that puts the root of the current crisis at Fannie and Freddie. Unfortunately, no economist agrees with him. It is simply a much larger problem than that.
In addition, the legislation McCain proposed would only have made Fannie and Freddie non-GSEs. But note: we are still bailing out private companies, like Bear Stearns and AIG. Even if Fannie and Freddie were 100% private today, we would still need to bail them out, because they are involved in about 80% of US mortgages. If we had let them collapse, as GSEs or private companies, there would be huge devastation. McCain’s bill did nothing to change that.
You can keep repeating the lie that Obama’s resume is tissue thin, but it’s not true. He does have his name on ethics reform legislation; you just prefer lies.
Feingold-Obama Ethics Reform Act (2007)
The Congressional Ethics Enforcement Commissions Act (109th Congress)
The Transparency and Integrity in Earmarks Act (109th Congress)
The CLEAN UP Act (109th Congress)
The mortgage fraud bill he wrote was introduced in 2006 and reintroduced in 2007.
So, again, you can disagree with Obama’s policies, but please stop spreading lies.

Much is made of McCain’s age. Has anyone brought up the fact that Obama smokes and both of his parents died at an early age. Plus Biden has had two brain aneurysms which could have killed him. If they both died while in office; that would leave Nancy Pelosi as president. I can’t think of a better reason to vote for McCain & Palin.

So your comment that Palin left Wassila in debt is a far cry from the whole truth of the matter.

From Bloomberg.com
Tellingly, three former SEC chairmen, a Democrat, Arthur Levitt, and two Republicans, David Ruder and Bill Donaldson, have endorsed Obama. Levitt is a board member of Bloomberg LP, the parent company of Bloomberg News.
Donaldson, who was tapped by Bush to head the SEC, says Obama called him last year about the financial-regulatory problems. He has never heard from McCain.
“Obama has been talking about the need for better financial regulation well before this crisis hit and has done some real thinking about it,” says Donaldson, a lifelong Republican. “McCain comes across as someone who suddenly realized changes have to be made.”

JRinLA, what your analysis fails to recognize is, well, the truth that McCain’s plan has absolutely no way to address the deficit.
Americans are finally looking deeper into the old cliche that Republicans are for smaller government and fiscal conservatism. Republicans have repeatedly grown the government over the past 30 years, and they have recently gotten our deficit to approach $10 trillion.
In 2001 McCain voted against the Bush tax cuts because he thought they hurt the middle class in order to benefit the rich. He also claimed it was wrong to give massive tax cuts during a time of war. He knew the cuts would drive up the deficit. Now, those same tax cuts are the heart of his economic policy. He is even promising more than Bush did. Even Greenspan says we can’t afford such cuts right now.
So, sorry, but after watching our deficit balloon and reading McCain’s plan, which fails to address it, I have no confidence that he is any kind of fiscal conservative. These are the same scare tactics used against Bill Clinton, whom the right wing claimed was a far left, tax and spend liberal, and he ended up shrinking government and balancing the budget. Much of the Clinton financial team are currently advising Obama. He’s also added Warren Buffet and Paul O’Neill.
Who is on McCain’s again?

Let me make it REALLY REALLY simple for you…
If Obama voted “present” on a piece of legislation, and the legislation passed – that means he voted “YES” (but with reservations)
If Obama voted “present” on a piece of legislation, and the legislation failed to pass – that means he voted “NO” (but with reservations).
I have no idea if he was voting with or against the Democratic party on these votes.
You’d have go go back over the votes and determine which party favored them, which party opposed them, which party got what they wanted, and whose side Obama was on.

I don’t care how much Wasilla wanted the sports complex. Good for them. Maybe what they needed at that time was more long-term debt. That is not what our country needs right now. So, if you want to talk about Palin’s executive experience, tell me how it relates to the current crisis we are facing. As governor, she’s had a huge surplus and been able to send checks to each Alaskan without hurting her budget one bit. As mayor, she received earmarks for many projects, and still left the town in debt. I don’t see how this supposed experience relates to our national economy at all.

samhiguchi, we know she went to 5 different colleges but she hasn’t released her grades, neither has McCain for that matter.. and more importantly, she still needs to release her tax records since she charged her state over 300 nights per diem while staying at her house. For all of you who keep mindlessly repeating that Obama has no foreign policy experience, go educate yourself. He’s been on the senate committee with Biden, was right about Aghan/Pakistan and Iran diplomacy over a year ago (which 5 ex-secretaries of states agrees with and Bush even has started talks). McCain – wrong, Palin – doesn’t have a clue.

Palin became mayor of small town Wasilla that did not even have a police station. As mayor she brought in commerce, i.e. Wal-mart, Home depot, etc, (stores big cities take for granted). Wasilla’s population rose and she had a police station built and hired police officers. She built the sports complex that the community voted for and that increased revenues for Wasilla.
Someone commented that Palin increased sales tax, even on food. Alaska let’s the individual cities decide whether or not to tax food. In case you didn’t know, Alaska is the only state that does not collect state sales tax or levy individual income tax on personal income. Alaska also sends out petroleum revenue checks to their citizens.

You can put your fingers in your ears and shout “lies lies lies” all you want, the truth is, none of that BS legislation that you cite as support for Obama is worth the paper it’s written on.
And, I will note, ALL financial analysts admit that Freddie and Fannie were the starting point for the financial crisis of the last month. I know you don’t want to beleive that because Franklin Raines and Jim Johnson, CEOs of Fannie Mae (and crooks), are and were ()close economic advisors to Obama.
Only you and Obama actually believe Freddie and Fannie’s fraudulent accounting practices on an unimagined scale had nothing to do with this economic crisis.

and, Ethel08, the crisis started because Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, both GSE’as you note, were overleveraged. They also “cooked the books” to balance their accounts.
The Bush administration and Republicans in Congress, McCain included, tried to place limits on the GSEs’ risky investments, but their efforts were successfully resisted by most Democrats – including Obama.
And, it just so happens that Obama received the second largest contributions EVER from Fannie and Freddie (behind Chris Dodd). And Obama has only been in the Senate for 3 1/2 years! Now THERE’S AN ACCOMPLISHMENT.
That’s the real story here. Obama and the Democrats were bought and paid for.

This is what you are now doing when you assert, without evidence, that all economists agree with McCain. Here is an article from the WSJ editorial board, which doesn’t:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122204078161261183.html?mod=special_page_campaign2008_mostpop
Don’t forget that the SEC, this week, just blamed short-sellers too.
There is plenty of blame to go around here. The bottom line is that we would still be bailing out Fannie and Freddie, even if McCain’s legislation would have passed. They simply hold too many of America’s mortgages to let them fail.

ALASKA FIRST!
Until we as Alaskans receive our Ultimate Goal, the AIP will continue to strive to make Alaska a better place to live with less government interference in our everyday lives.
The Alaskan Independence Party’s goal is the vote we were entitled to in 1958, one choice from among the following four alternatives:
1) Remain a Territory.
2) Become a separate and Independent Nation.
3) Accept Commonwealth status.
4) Become a State.
The call for this vote is in furtherance of the dream of the Alaskan Independence Party’s founding father, Joe Vogler, which was for Alaskans to achieve independence under a minimal government, fully responsive to the people, promoting a peaceful and lawful means of resolving differences.

m@cchiavelli–Obama voted “present” 130 times, some on tough issues he refused to take a firm stand on. One example–Obama was the only senator to be “present” on legislation allowing victims of rape and sex crimes to have court records sealed.
What is so hard about that? He refuses to take a firm stand on anything, including the current economic crisis.

The Bush administration clearly did not work hard enough to overcome the cronyism, corruption and influence peddling that lead Obama to vote against Senate Resolution 91 in 2005, which would have prevented this whole mess.
Oh, and 1 of the 3 co-sponsors of that measure? John McCain.
So, Ethel08, you’re still going to defend Obama for blocking efforts to reform Freddie and Fannie in 2005 and receiving $125,000 in contributions from them in less than 3 1/2 years?

S Adams, at least Obama showed up, unlike McCain. If voting on issues is that important to you, then surely you must be disturbed by McCain’s pattern of refusing to even come to the Senate on days when difficult votes occur.
In addition, Obama has taken a firm stand on many issues, but they may be ones you disagree with. He has supported an array of ethics reform bills, consistently stood behind pro-choice legislation, and crafted legislation that significantly reformed criminal investigations in Illinois. He has also stood behind his position that Iraq was a mistake, that we need to withdraw in a timely manner, and that we need to move more troops into Afghanistan.
He also took a tough stance on FISA, which much of his party disagreed with.

Sound important? Actually, in my travels around Ireland after a business trip I’d stumbled onto a small-town ceremony where Ms. McAleese was dedicating a new community center. Funny how we can spin something insignificant into “experience,” isn’t it? ;-)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CNN) — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s hometown required women to pay for their own rape examinations while she was mayor, a practice her police chief fought to keep as late as 2000.
A former Alaskan lawmaker says it seems unlikely that Gov. Sarah Palin was unaware of Wasilla’s policy.
Former state Rep. Eric Croft, a Democrat, sponsored a state law requiring cities to provide the examinations free of charge to victims. He said the only ongoing resistance he met was from Wasilla, where Palin was mayor from 1996 to 2002.

Tom, McCain’s legislation would not have changed the fundamental situation about subprime lending, and it would not have changed the amount of mortgages that Fannie and Freddie were involved in. His statements came only after a huge report was issued about the accounting problems there, and he only addressed the accounting problems. He seemed to show no interest in the other significant problems within the housing sector. Had McCain’s legislation passed, the crisis still would have occurred because of the number of mortgages Fannie and Freddie were involved in, and we would still be bailing them out.
In addition, the Republicans controlled Congress for approximately a dozen years, from 1994-2006, and for six of those years, they had a member of their own party in the White House. The subprime situation and accounting scandals across all industries were ongoing then. Yet, they did nothing about them. I have no problem admitting that Democrats share in the blame of Fannie and Freddie growing to the size they expanded to, but they have only been in charge for two years and with a scant majority in the Senate. Why is it so hard for you to admit that Republicans also share that blame–including people on McCain’s staff today? In addition, there is NO PROOF that this legislation would have averted the current crisis; virtually zero economists believe this.
Finally, Obama was not a part of the Senate Banking Committee that stopped the legislation and neither were any of his advisers.

2. He opposed the Patriot Act
3.voted for partial birth abortion

5.Supports Drivers licenses for illegal immigrants
6.Supports welfare and social security for illegal immigrants
7.voted no on notifying parents of minors when they want an abortion, no matter the stage of pregnancy and that minors are allowed to cross state lines to do it.

You can spout whatever you want about Rick Davis, who is McCain’s campaign manager, and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Davis isn’t on the ballot, is he?
The point is McCain sponsored legislation (S190) in 2005 to deal with the growing Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac problem. Did Rick Davis or any other lobbyist influence McCain’s decision? Clearly not.
Obama, on the other hand, received $125,000 in campaign contributions from Freddie/Fannie PAC’s and employees, and blocked S190 from being passed.
And, here we are today dealing with the mess. Thanks, Senator Obama!

It seems John McCain’s belief in “Country First” only goes so far.
Today, we learned that not only does McCain own thirteen cars, but that the McCain fleet includes imports, a VW from Germany and a Honda from Japan. (His wife drives a Lexus, but that car is owned by her beer distributorship.)
And now it turns out that earlier this month he lied to Michigan voters about his car purchases, telling them “I’ve bought American literally all my life” during a September 7 interview with Detroit’s WXYZ-TV. Earlier in the interview, he had told the interviewer “Cindy and I own an automobile that’s American-made” which was about best an extremely misleading statement.
Let’s face it — the man is just a pathological liar.
The United Auto Workers pile on:
UAW President Ron Gettelfinger on Sunday once again accused John McCain of less-than-straight talk on the issue of buying American-made cars, after Newsweek magazine reported that the McCains own at least three foreign-made vehicles. [...]
“‘Buy American’ can’t just be a slogan John McCain rolls out when he’s in Michigan,” Gettelfinger said Sunday. Americans are free to buy whatever they choose, Gettelfinger said, but he accused McCain of trying to mislead Midwestern voters about what vehicles he owns.

Ethel08 -
you’re right – s190 (Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005) was initiated in response to a report. The report said:
1. Fannie Mae employees deliberately and intentionally manipulated financial reports to hit earnings targets in order to trigger bonuses for senior executives; and
2. Fannie Mae used its political power to lobby Congress in an effort to interfere with the regulator’s examination of the company’s accounting problems.
Seems pretty intuitive that McCain would respond by co-sponsoring legislation given the current problems, doesn’t it?
The bill gave a regulator power to crack down on Freddie and Fannie, and would have required the companies to eliminate their investments in risky assets.
That wouldn’t have made a difference?
Where was Barack Obama – Cashing check and sponsoring those difficult voice vote unanimous resolutions?

Does that make him Un-American? What do the liberals have against someone working hard and having something to show for it?

He is a man who thinks people earning 250 million dollars a year is midddle class. He (or Cindy) has 8 homes and 13 cars. This is NOT what the average American middle class family has. How can he understand and relate to us if he has never seen our side of the fence. At least at some point in their lives Michelle and Obama have lived on our side of the fence.

The number of McCain’s cars and houses is an indicator of how ‘out of touch’ he is with the American people. More important, however, is the fact that he cannot decide which side of an issue he is on. The GOP keeps calling Barack an ‘elitist’ while ignoring the fact that McCain is living in a remote world reserved for the upper echelon elite. We’ve had 8 yrs of good-ol’-boy-I-wanna-have-a-beer-with-ya’ politics ruled by the least common denominator. Isn’t it time that we had a serious candidate that offered intelligent and thought filled solutions? The fact that the Palin/McCain ticket could prevail absolutely terrifies me.

I remember there was a time when America stood as a beacon to the world with your wealth, resources and world domination. Those days are almost over. The question is not if the United States will survive but which new super-powers will take the most?
China? Russia? or Europe?
There is no way that a nation can continually borrow and borrow trillions from other super-powers without a “collection day”. Americans are just dumb and blind enough to “fool” themselves into electing McCain. When this new imbecile is done finishing off what Bush began … let the divisions begin. I hope as Europeans we get a good chunk of America, perhaps the eastern seaboard and south. The Russians will most likely claim the northern hemisphere of America and China, of course, the West and South West.
I never thought I would live long enough to see this happen in my lifetime but that day is just over the horizon. With the election of McCain … the demise of America shall finally commence and then it will soon be over. (Please vote for McCain … wink wink)

I know for a fact the U.S. is being eyed with renewed suspicion across the globe for its inability to shut down this Palin farce immediately, and what that impotence means about how incredibly shallow, irrational and untrustworthy we have become. Most of the world thinks our electoral decision is simple: Choose the 21st Century thinker, choose the cool-headed candidate, choose Obama. They thought this even before Palin. Now we just look confused and behind the times even for hesitating to quell this “extremist hockey-mom president” malarkey.

As I read through the blog, I’m struck not by the substance, but rather the lack of any substance and personal attacks on the candidates.
It takes a lot of nerve to from all of the candidates to place themselves in front of the nation. Please discuss the issues and avoid the attacks.
If the public can keep the discourse civil, perhaps politicians will take heed and follow our example. If the discourse continues in a negative trend, we will only get what we are looking for and will have no grounds to complain.

Tom, the bill did not give the government the authority to “crack down.” The bill made Freddie and Fannie 100% private companies–no longer GSEs. The subprime crisis would have continued, and they still would have needed a bailout, just like Bear Stearns and AIG–two other completely private companies–did.
Obama wasn’t in the Banking Committee, which is the committee that killed this legislation that, according to you (and virtually no one else), would have Saved the Entire Economy from Ruin.
And you can still can’t answer why the Republican controlled Congress of over a decade didn’t do anything to stop the problem. BUT they did green light the new kinds of securities instruments that have led to the exuberance in the housing market. They also passed the legislation that dismantled the Glass-Steagall Act.

THIS IS FOR ALL THE REPUBLICANS TO READ ON THIS BLOG…esp. JRinLA et al.
White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol
Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your rents, because ‘every family has challenges,’ even as black and Latino families with similar ‘challenges’ are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay. White privilege is when you can call yourself a ‘expletive’ red neck,’ like Bristol Palin’s boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you’ll ‘kick their expletive’ arse,’ and talk about how you like to ‘shoot sheet’ for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug. White privilege is when you can attend four different colleges in six
years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of,
then returned to after making up some coursework at a community college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college, and probably someone who only got in in the first place because of affirmative action. White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don’t all peeeeee on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you’re ‘untested.’ White privilege is being able to say that you support the words ‘under God’ in the pledge of allegiance because ‘if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it’s good enough for me,’ and not be immediately disqualified from holding office–since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the ‘under God’ part wasn’t added until
the 1950s–while believing that reading accused criminals and terrorists
their rights (because, ya know, the Constitution, which you used to
teach at a prestigious law school requires it), is a dangerous and silly
idea only supported by mushy liberals.
White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people
immediately scared of you. White privilege is being able to have a
husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto was ‘Alaska first,’ and
no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you’re
black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can
be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she’s being disrespectful. White privilege is being able to make fun of community organizers and the work they do–like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the 8-hour workday, or an end to child labor–and people think you’re being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college–you’re
somehow being mean, or even sexist.
White privilege is being able to convince white women who don’t even
agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running
mate anyway, because all of a sudden your presence on the ticket has
inspired confidence in these same white women, and made them give your
party a ‘second look.’White privilege is being able to fire people who didn’t support your political campaigns and not be accused of abusing your power or being a typical politician who engages in favoritism, while being black and
merely knowing some folks from the old-line political machines in Chicago means you must be corrupt. White privilege is being able to attend churches over the years whose pastors say that people who voted for John Kerry or merely criticize George W. Bush are going to hell, and that the U.S. is an explicitly Christian nation and the job of Christians is to bring Christian theological principles into government, and who bring in speakers who say the conflict in the Middle East is God’s punishment on Jews for
rejecting Jesus, and everyone can still think you’re just a good church-going Christian, but if you’re black and friends with a black pastor who has noted (as have Colin Powell and the U.S. Department of Defense) that terrorist attacks are often the result of U.S. foreign policy and who talks about the history of racism and its effect on black people, you’re an extremist who probably hates America.
White privilege is not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is when asked by a
reporter, and then people get angry at the reporter for asking you such
a ‘trick question,’ while being black and merely refusing to give one-word answers to the queries of Bill O’Reilly means you’re dodging the question, or trying to seem overly intellectual and nuanced. White privilege is being able to claim your experience as a POW has
anything at all to do with your fitness for president, while being black
and experiencing racism is, as Sarah Palin has referred to it a ‘light’
burden. And finally, white privilege is the only thing that could possibly allow someone to become president when he has voted with George W. Bush 90
percent of the time, even as unemployment is skyrocketing, people are losing their homes, inflation is rising, and the U.S. is increasingly
isolated from world opinion, just because white voters aren’t sure about
that whole ‘change’ thing. Ya know, it’s just too vague and ill-defined,
unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and
certain.
White privilege is, in short, the problem.

Oh wait, now we’re counting flip flops? I’ll play:
How about John McCain saying repeatedly in 2002 that the Iraq War would be easy, and then in 2007 saying that anyone who ever thought the war would be easy was naive of the facts?
How about how on the Senate floor in 2001 he claimed that the Bush tax cuts went against his “conscience” because they forced middle-class tax payers who needed tax relief “the most” to pay more in order to benefit the rich? But now in 2008, these same cuts that he found so morally offensive are now the heart of his own tax plan, even thought our deficit has quadrupled since 2001?
How about how he denounced Rovian tactics when he was a candidate in 1999, and now has hired the same Bush team in order to win in 2008?
How about how he thought Lieberman and Ridge were most qualified for the VP job, but when his party said they would revolt if he picked either of them, he backed down and picked Palin, whom he hardly knew? Then he stands up in his convention speech and says he will go against his party?
How about in 1999 when he said that Roe v Wade should not be overturned? But in his 2008 campaign platform, he says it is a flawed decision that MUST be overturned?
Or how about in 2005 when he said that “we’ve got to adjudicate” the cases of the people held in Guatanamo? But then in 2008, he denounced the conservative Supreme Court’s decision to allow just that?
He claims now to have been a strong critic of George Bush’s–a maverick–but in the primaries, he argued repeatedly: “on the transcendent issues, the most important issues of our day, I’ve been totally in agreement and support of President Bush.” But now he is trying so hard to distance himself from Bush–while keeping all of the same policies on these “transcendent issues.”
How about claiming in 1999 when he was in South Carolina that he thought the confederate flag should continue to fly over the capitol and that it was a symbol of “heritage”? Then, after he lost the election, he admitted on television and in his own book that he only said that to get elected. Here’s the quotation: “[It was the] sacrifice of principle for personal ambition. I feared that if I answered honestly, I could not win the South Carolina primary. So I chose to compromise my principles.”
See, McCain is used to going back on his principles to win.
Seriously, this guy’s gone back on so many things that I can’t believe you right wingers want to bring up flip flopping! If you get him elected, how can you be sure which John McCain will show up in January?

Yes, MT, because what this country really needs in a leader right now is someone who “will not blink.” Because what we’ve really been missing in the past 8 years is a president with haughty certainty, who never admits accountability, and doesn’t think through any decisions. Indeed! More certainty, more stubbornness, and an inability to reflect on previous decisions are exactly the qualities that have been lacking in the White House over the past 8 years!

Ethel08 -
I think this meme is getting tired, but ok..
The s190 legislation proposed in 2005, co-sponsored by McCain, would have (if not defeated by Democrats) created a new agency within the Treasury Department to assume supervision of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, who, as you know, were the two largest players in the sub-prime mortgage lending industry.
The new agency would have had the authority, which had rested with Congress, to set one of the two capital-reserve requirements for the companies. The agency would have exercised authority over any new lines of business. And it would have been required to determine whether the two are adequately managing the risks of their ballooning portfolios.
Both Fannie and Freddie together issued more than $1.5 trillion in outstanding debt, which has now been thrust on the taxpayers.
Even after the 2005 report concluded that Freddie Mac manipulated its accounting to mislead investors, neither OBAMA nor the Democrats did anything about it.
McCain tried to do something about it. Could he have done more? Maybe. But to sit there and tell everyone that Obama a) wasn’t taking contributions from Fannie/Freddy or b) the legislation wouldn’t have made a difference, is pure fantasy.

Tom, the bill establishes a new board and director to oversee the entities. It gives a broad sense of wanting new accounting standards and more liquid investments. It also seeks to make sure that the agencies stay out of the primary mortgage market, which as far as I know, would have had no bearing regarding the current crisis.
It is not that Fannie and Freddie weren’t being risky. I absolutely agree that they were. It is that there is nothing in this legislation, written well into the housing bubble, that indicates that it would have stopped the subprime crisis, which was well underway.
I worked in the financial sector for several years, including for a company who specialized in MBSs. Though this measure might (and it’s only a might because we have no idea what this board would have done once appointed) have curbed Fannie and Freddie’s activities from 2005-2008, it would not have altered the fundamental credit crisis that was already brewing and had been for several years. Simply put, banks were issuing a ton of mortgages and didn’t care whether or not people could pay, because those mortgages ended up bundled in securities in the secondary mortgage market. (And end consumers were taking on mortgages they couldn’t pay; some were openly deceived, some were way too willing to accept bad terms.) Pretty much every economist agrees that this is the underlying problem. Freddie and Fannie certainly stoked the fire to get more mortgages written, but by 2005, the seeds of this problem were sown. I’m not saying that nothing could have been done, and I’m not saying that the legislation wouldn’t have changed anything. But it would not have halted the underlying credit crisis, which your posts imply. And we would still be bailing out these companies now. This is a credit crisis; it is more than just a mortgage crisis.
And, again, the Congress was Republican-controlled when this measure first came up, and they didn’t pass it either. Both parties are implicated in this mess, fairly thoroughly to boot.

Posted by: ethel08 | September 22, 2008, 4:04 pm 4:04 pm

And I never claimed Obama didn’t take contributions from Freddie and Fannie. So I hope you don’t try to insinuate that McCain’s campaign isn’t being led by a bunch of people who profited as well.
I am arguing that Obama had nothing to do with McCain’s legislation being stopped.

I’m curious…
Imagine the Democrats had a VET from the Vietname war running for President, a guy who married a wealthy heiress, but has spent most of his life as a Senator in Washington, has suffered life-threatening cancer three times in the recent past.
The guy would be the oldest President to ever take office, admits that he doesn’t understand the economy.
He chooses and young, untested, obscure, provincial one-term governor, former mayor of a small town in Alaska to be his running mate.
Her main experience as Governor has been figuring out how to dole out windfall revenues that the State has taken in owing to a sudden, unanticipated trebling in the price of oil.
She claims that as Governor she’s cut back on federal earmarks, turned down federal pork projects, but it turns out this isn’t really true – in fact she took in millions for her town as mayor, and additional hundreds of millions in federal pork as governor.
She is now being investigated by a bi-partisan investigative committee looking into an apparent abuse of power, and although she is promising to
“clean up Washington”, she is refusing to cooperate with this bi-partisan committed.
Now remember, the only difference I’m positing here is that rather than a Republican, we are talking about a Democrat.
What do you think Republicans would be saying?

Posted by: m@cchiavelli | September 22, 2008, 4:08 pm 4:08 pm

Actually, my mom lives in Alaska and she has been shocked to hear Sarah Palin’s newfound folksy speech patterns. She said she never dropped her g’s before she started this run for VP, and she thinks she’s a total phony. My mom lives in Willow, near Wasilla, and she had a reasonably favorable opinion of the Palins (she was not living there when Palin was mayor, though). My mom was a Hillary supporter who was considering voting for McCain initially, but now that the truth has started to emerge about Sarah Palin and McCain 2.0 has been unveiled, she is firmly in the Obama camp.

Reddog..are you serious? McBush came from a military family all right..two-plus generations of ADMIRALS! Guess Porta-Johnnie (goes along with the crowd and is full of it) needs to be Prez because he couldn’t make the Admiral grade..and let dear old dad down! McLie has NEVER wanted for anything in his life! ALL his life, he’s sucked off the public teat..all and any health issues taken care of by public funds..the best schools (with “legacy” entry, just like his best bud Georgie)..plus a “little” help from the women in his life! The guy has never had a job that wasn’t gained through sheer nepotism (again, just like his best pal George). He’s just a glorified tennis bum!
Yet, even with all that advantage, he still either votes against or doesn’t bother to show up to vote for any number of vets’ and troops funding bills! Vets organizations give McLie a “D”, and Obama a “B+” to Obama..because Obams has looked out for them..contrary to the lies of the Bush/McCain crime family!
..And don’t give me that crap about “POW”..! MY uncle, a cousin and my nephew were all POWs, in different wars, and they are truly disgusted with the way he’s used that (noun, verb, POW) part of his life to get sympathy, every time he or his surrogates open their mouths! My cousin said McBush’s willingness to be so casual about such a traumatizing thing makes him wonder if he really DID have the hard time he wants everyone to believe he did!
Reicht-wingers are such dupes! You mean less than lint to the hierarchy of your party..yet they turn to you every election cycle, spewing out their phony, hate-filled lies..usually aimed to blame Dems for all the ills on this earth..when it’s THEM that causes the problems you suffer from! Watched all you mouth-breathers cheering everything that was said at the convention, foaming at the mouth, all the while! “Maverick”..cheer..”Lipstick”..cheer..”You’re all a bunch of tools and we laugh at you behind your backs”..CHEER!! Dimwits!
McLie voted FOR deregulation..his dear friends frmr. Sen. Phil Gramm and wife Wendy were known as Mr. and Mrs. Enron..because their fingers were in that pot up to their hairy pits. Gramm has been one of the prime movers and shakers in de-regulation, so he and his cronies could make even more money..and here’s the payoff..the financial mess we’re in today! Remember..Gramm thinks you’re all whiners!
McPhony has voted against most EVERY bill for women’s, workers’ or Vets’ rights..yet you mental midgets eagerly CHEER him and the know-nothing Wasilla wonder on! Lord help us..it’s SOOOOOOO embarrassing to see such stupidity in action..even worse when it’s the stupidity of the willingly ignorant and the mentally lazy..who can’t be bothered to get their research the hard and real way (going to the source), but satisfied to just stick a funnel in their ears and pour in Reich Longblah and Grampy McSame’s talking points!

So, Bush-in-a-skirt is going to shake hands with a few of the heads of state we pay regularly and that is supposed to give her foreign policy credentials? When she says she can “see Russian from her door,” that’s like saying you can see San Francisco from a deck in St. Louis. Is her hubby and kids going to be there too? Remember her kids, the ones she wanted to keep from the media that she shows up with all the time? I wonder how the shotgun wedding is moving along.

I’m a registered independent voter, preferring to make a thoughtful decision regarding a candidate than follow any party affiliation, yet my concern about the Palin/McCain ticket is profound.
Beyond the differing ideologies and perspectives of the candidates,( and these are countless) there’s a simple and basic issue that comes to me.
If elected, we would have in McCain an elderly, not very healthy man as our president,(when will those medical records be released??) and a vice president, still obviously fertile, who doesn’t believe in birth control …
I feel rather insecure thinking that the leadership of this country could be in the hands of a pregnant mother of five.

The Real Culprits In This Meltdown
>
> INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY
> Posted 9/15/2008
> Big Government: Barack Obama and Democrats blame the historic
> financial turmoil on the market. But if it’s dysfunctional, Democrats
> during the Clinton years are a prime reason for it.
>
> Obama in a statement yesterday blamed the shocking new round of
> subprime-related bankruptcies on the free-market system, and
> specifically the “trickle-down” economics of the Bush administration,
> which he tried to gig opponent John McCain for wanting to extend.
> But it was the Clinton administration, obsessed with multiculturalism,
> that dictated where mortgage lenders could lend, and originally helped
> create the market for the high-risk subprime loans now infecting like
> a retrovirus the balance sheets of many of Wall Street’s most revered
> institutions.
> Tough new regulations forced lenders into high-risk areas where they
> had no choice but to lower lending standards to make the loans that
> sound business practices had previously guarded against making. It was
> either that or face stiff government penalties.
> The untold story in this whole national crisis is that President
> Clinton put on steroids the Community Redevelopment Act, a well-
> intended Carter-era law designed to encourage minority homeownership.
> And in so doing, he helped create the market for the risky subprime
> loans that he and Democrats now decry as not only greedy but
> “predatory.”
> Yes, the market was fueled by greed and overleveraging in the
> secondary market for subprimes, vis-a-vis mortgaged-backed securities
> traded on Wall Street. But the seed was planted in the ’90s by Clinton
> and his social engineers. They were the political catalyst behind this
> slow-motion financial train wreck.
> And it was the Clinton administration that mismanaged the quasi-
> governmental agencies that over the decades have come to manage the
> real estate market in America.
> As soon as Clinton crony Franklin Delano Raines took the helm in 1999
> at Fannie Mae, for example, he used it as his personal piggy bank,
> looting it for a total of almost $100 million in compensation by the
> time he left in early 2005 under an ethical cloud.
> Other Clinton cronies, including Janet Reno aide Jamie Gorelick,
> padded their pockets to the tune of another $75 million.
> Raines was accused of overstating earnings and shifting losses so he
> and other senior executives could earn big bonuses.
> In the end, Fannie had to pay a record $400 million civil fine for SEC
> and other violations, while also agreeing as part of a settlement to
> make changes in its accounting procedures and ways of managing risk.
> But it was too little, too late. Raines had reportedly steered Fannie
> Mae business to subprime giant Countrywide Financial, which was saved
> from bankruptcy by Bank of America.
> At the same time, the Clinton administration was pushing Fannie and
> her brother Freddie Mac to buy more mortgages from low-income
> households.
> The Clinton-era corruption, combined with unprecedented catering to
> affordable-housing lobbyists, resulted in today’s nationalization of
> both Fannie and Freddie, a move that is expected to cost taxpayers
> tens of billions of dollars.
> And the worst is far from over. By the time it is, we’ll all be paying
> for Clinton’s social experiment, one that Obama hopes to trump with a
> whole new round of meddling in the housing and jobs markets. In fact,
> the social experiment Obama has planned could dwarf both the Great
> Society and New Deal in size and scope.
> There’s a political root cause to this mess that we ignore at our
> peril. If we blame the wrong culprits, we’ll learn the wrong lessons.
> And taxpayers will be on the hook for even larger bailouts down the
> road.
> But the government-can-do-no-wrong crowd just doesn’t get it. They
> won’t acknowledge the law of unintended consequences from well-
> meaning, if misguided, acts.
> Obama and Democrats on the Hill think even more regulation and more
> interference in the market will solve the problem their policies
> helped cause. For now, unarmed by the historic record, conventional
> wisdom is buying into their blame-business-first rhetoric and bigger-

> While government arguably has a role in helping low-income folks buy a
> home, Clinton went overboard by strong-arming lenders with tougher and

> Market failure? Hardly. Once again, this crisis has government’s

ckt, exactly right. Why do Americans hold such as low expectation for Commander in Chief that they would consider electing a junior senator who has never ran anything of significance in his life, and frequently has failed to do his job (voting “present”) just so he doesn’t have to take sides and possibly hurt his chances at being elected?

Woww…..the things that some people say online. Sheeeeesh.
I’m a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight… (I hope I’m not offending anyone).
If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you’re ‘exotic and different.’
Grow up in Alaska and you like moose burgers, and it’s a quintessential American story.
If your name is Barack you’re a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, and you’re a maverick.
Obtain your BS degree from Columbia Univ, then graduate from Harvard Law School, that makes you unstable.
Attend 5 different small and community colleges before graduating with a BS in journalism at Univ of Idaho after 6 yrs, and you’re well grounded.
If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the
first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration
drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law
professor giving lectures, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over
750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human
Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a
state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the
Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works, and Veteran’s Affairs
committees, you don’t have any real leadership experience (or foreign policy experience).
If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6
years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the
governor of a state with only 650,000 people, have eyes good enough to be able to see Russia across the water, obtained your very first US passport one year ago in 2007, then you’re qualified to become the country’s second highest ranking executive.
If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2
beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you’re not a real
Christian.
If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your
disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you’re a Christian.
If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper
use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.
If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no
other option in sex education in your state’s school system while your unwed
teen daughter ends up pregnant, you’re very responsible.
If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a
prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community,
then gave that up to raise a family, your family’s values don’t represent
America’s.
If your husband is nicknamed ‘First Dude’, with at least one DWI conviction
and no college education, who didn’t register to vote until age 25 and once was
a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your
family situation is extremely admirable.
OK, much clearer now. Whew. Steve

Posted by: Steve | September 22, 2008, 7:32 pm 7:32 pm

Tom, (ummmm) The correct grammar here is “who has never RUN” as opposed to “who has never RAN”. But that’s ok, I understand how the ‘no child left behind’ program has been such a raving success. I don’t know where you are getting the ‘frequently failed to do his job’ statement from. If you want to give me facts, I will verify them. But you have asked me what I see in Obama. I see someone who has not become jaded by the Washington politics, someone who can lead this country with even-handed grace, who will seek to return the name of the United States to a place of honor in the worldm someone with hope and vision for the future. There was a time when much of this I would have attributed to John McCain the descendant of admirals of the shining sea. However, Sen McCain seems to have held a fire sale on his soul. He has employed devisive techniques and outright lies with Machiavellian flair. His integrity has been usurped by avarice. He is part and parcel of the political machine in Washington as can be seen by his lobbyist consutants. He tells his constituency that he was not part of the Wall Street meltdown, but he voted for and championed the bill that Gramm submitted for deregulation. Now he sings a song of regulation. He can’t have it both ways. Look at his record, he proudly proclaimed that he voted with Bush 90% of the time. That tells me that he values the Bush policies and will continue them. We’ve tried that for 8 years and it is blatantly not working.

Posted by: ckt | September 22, 2008, 7:34 pm 7:34 pm

John McCain has prostituted himself, his country and whatever values he once had. The proof is in his “maverick” nature, which is an unwillingness to see anything but his own point of view–which has been demonstrably and consistently greed and power-oriented. He is a walking sepulchre of scandal and savage ambition, and his running mate is a hollow doll of profoundly mundane service to Big Oil and The Patriarchy. Obama/Biden 2008-2016.

While the leading patriots were preparing for the Grand Council of deputies in 1774, the people, everywhere, were preparing for impending war. They armed themselves, and practised military tactics almost every day. Men of all stations in life might be found in the ranks for discipline. Deacons of churches were often captains, having more than half of the young men of the congregations with whom they worshipped, as their followers. There was seldom any military organization besides a company, but they were ready to fall into regiments and brigades when called for. Boys imitated their elders, and “trained” with sticks. Blacksmiths were kept busy all of the summer and autumn of 1774, forging swords, guns and bayonets, and other men were compounding gunpowder, and making bullets of lead. When the Congress at Philadelphia had closed late in the autumn, the Provincial Congress of Massachusetts voted to enroll twelve thousand of these patriots under the general title of Minute-men–volunteers who would be ready at a minute’s warning to take the field with arms in their hands.

Well to be fair, the soldiers fighting in the revolution were very brave; they actually stood on the battlefield. We have to admit that by far most of our openly admitted chicken Republican friends that are completely eligible for military service only had the courage to pull the “Bush” lever but never went and joined the army! But hey, even the most simple minded fiscal conservative can see that it’s better to send other peoples fathers, sons, mothers and daughters to fight while we stay home and make as much money as we can.

In 1991 a young Muslim Harvard Law College graduate named Barack Hussein Obama (who has denied his Islamic past and Muslim roots for as long as he has been a public figure) became a civil rights community activist working out of the Trinity United Church of Christ. Obama worked as a community organizer for Trinity in poor black neighborhoods. Trinity’s senior pastor Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr, a black racist, who preached radical Afrocentric theology and didn’t mind delivering profanity-spiked sermons found a congregation-builder in Obama. Because of what Wright called Obama’s multiple-faith background and his Harvard education, he was a natural community-builder.
When Obama broke onto the national political scene in 2004, not only did he attempt to erase all traces his Islamic childhood, but he also tried to erase the nature of his relationship with Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr, the pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ. (When your country is at war with Islamic extremists being a Muslim is not the shortest route to the White House.) Obama has told the media his reason for shielding his pastor was because “…he respected Mr. Wright’s work for the poor and his fight against injustice.” In reality Dr. Wright’s work was to denounce the United States as a white racist nation. That’s not good press for an African American candidate who needs to win a majority of the white vote to win the office of President.

Judge.
White Americans will be declared slaves to black people on November the fifth, and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Hmmm?

Posted by: Barry | September 22, 2008, 8:23 pm 8:23 pm

ckt, the facts are that Obama has, almost 130 times taken the easy way out and voted present throughout his congressional career. Those were the time I would consider him not having done his job. Obama was either making calculated decisions on how to avoid controversy, or else he just did not know enough about the issues he was to vote. It means he was either being a coward or he was too uninformed. At least in my view, that is far too many “present” votes to be considered a true leader.
And I do not entirely disagree about McCain. However I have seen the same “change of heart” with Obama of late. I am hearing more and more half-truths, misleading, and out of context quotes used by both sides. If you think it is only one side that pulls that garbage, you have only been paying attention to one side only.
Lastly, I apologize if I do not sound “educated” enough on the keyboard. Maybe you can explain to me what exactly is a “lobbyist consutant”.

How exactly can a senile, geriatric and revolting geezer be called “the man”? I think you have your wires crossed. Obama out-masculines McCain in vigor, integrity, strength, temper-control, intelligence and charisma. McCain and Palin are both silly, silly people, and they’re both cowardly, bossy, effeminate, frustrated and uptight.

GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN misled WHITE-Americans gathered for this week’s SCRAPBOOKING convention. SHe told a fib. SHe purposefully knew the truth yet decided for the gain of the political moment decided to lead astray the minds of those in attendance. What’s scary is – She’s so masterful at it.
THE VERY UNEXPERIENCED GOVERNOR has achieved relative “rock star” status since hER charismatic presentation at the REPUBLIVAN convention LASTWEEK. I have been predicting for three DAYS now that PALIN will most likely be part of A SATUDAY NIGHT LIVE SKETCH. SHe’s got everything that REPUBLICANS look for in a candidate, looks, charm, and the uncanny ability to distort truth like few have seen since WHY GEORGE DUBYA BUSH!. In fact PALIN may be better at it than BUSH.
But as to his recent deception with the HOOTERS ORGANIZATION OF VAIN ENTERTAINERS that ROCK (HOOVER), She spoke with the typical charismatic demeanor She’s become known for when She let loose, “Don’t be bamboozled. Don’t buy into it… It’s great if he (President Bush) commits to signing it (the extension of the Voting Rights Act), but what is critical is the follow-through. You don’t just talk the talk, but you also walk the walk.”
HER lie by implication is that there is at least an outside chance that President Bush HAS A BRAIN. ALSO would not sign the legislation (passed without amendments) the very minute it hits his desk.
But it is a lie that plays well in America’s liberaTED HOOTERS GIRLS Communities. It is also one of several. High profile African-Americans have been saying such non-sense since Bush first ran for office in 2000. It was this very same HOOVER that ran a campaign ad that implied that Bush played a hand OF CANASTA WITH PUTIN. It was this same HOOVERS’s literature that spread the wildly false rumor in 2000 that Bush HAD A HIGH IQ . It was the HOOVERS’s HOLLIE, NICOLE AND TARA’ called the Bush administration the equivalent of the Taliban. And now it was SARAH PALIN who implied that Bush wanted to take away the right of BIG BREASTED WOMEN to cast a vote.
Shameful.
In my upcoming book, MUSCLEHEAD REVOLUTION, I spend NO TIME WRITING OBJECTIVE STUFF, NO SENSE STARTING NOW.

Cool! I’m so jealous of Sarah Palin, she’ll be talking with Bono! And Boo to Sen. McCain for talking about Obama’s fundraising with Barbara Streisand. Streisand is too good of a singer for you to mock Obama for being around. I mean if this was Celine Dion I would be ok with the mocking(Dion is not one of my favorite singers). Oh but Sarah will talk with the President of Afghanistan. I hope she read up on the guy before she talked with him. McCain is old and old men can get away with not doing homework because they think they know everything (that’s why I don’t volunteer sitting with them in hospitals because they want me to sometimes sit on their lap and I’m like “I know I’m light but if you break a hip, you know you’re gonna die in six to eight weeks” because men can’t survive a broken hip as long as women can.). But anyway going off topic for a sec., the point is I’m sure God has more things better to do than to help support people’s political agendas. Like make sure flowers grow and stuff. I’m sure he would rather want us to get along then to crap all over each other other because we are all made in his image. Plus none of us is perfect except for Jesus Christ and I know I haven’t seen him walking around anybody’s neighborhood. You know there’s a saying around a hair salon I go to sometimes, “Girl, you better clip your broken ends before you hate on someone’s curl.” So stop the hate-er-aid. One love!

Wait, Judge you live in Asia? Like Tokyo? I know they have great shopping there. I would rather shop in Hong Kong or Macau as I think they are less expensive. Or even Mumbai. I’m getting off topic, I’m just thinking about my next shopping spree. But anyway I’m glad to listen to opinions from both sides of the spectrum. But I take it as a given that all politicians lie and bend the truth. The only politician in Washington who I thought was really honest to the point that it hurt him in his bid for the presidency was Ron Paul. But I know that this election season is a deliciously played game. McCain played it well when he picked Sarah Palin. I mean I know his camp was worried about him not having that solid “Christian” conservative vote that preferred Huckabee and helped re-elect G. Bush in 2004. But he knew what he was doing and plus the fact that he didn’t make it seem obvious that he was about “More of the Same” because he did what Obama didn’t do, he put an empowered woman on the ticket. Obama was definitely on the defensive when that happened. But now Obama is taking the offensive with the big issue of the economy. McCain is supposed to represent the fiscal conservative view but the Republican administration in power(and that big whopper of a bailout- but it is necessary)shows otherwise. It’s getting exciting. Who knows what will happen in the next few days. Not on this topic: At what temp. is it okay to wear a sweater? I know someone told me if I wear a sweater and it’s too warm outside, I could catch pneumonia. But I don’t know how that is possible. They should do something like this on “Mythbusters”! Stay cool people!

What the hel1. I don’t understand why I wasn’t asked to be on the ticket with McCain. I don’t know jack about economics but then neither does Sarah so that shouldn’t disqualify me. I’m not too sure what the answer is in regard to the peace process between Israel and Palestine either. I may have to give that one to Sarah though; I suppose God will tell her what the answer is. I am not sure how to balance concerns over human rights and freedom in China with our growing economic interdependence with that country, but I doubt Sarah even knows that China is an up and coming powerhouse. I only went to 3 colleges to get my degree; however, the thing that makes me a lot more qualified than Palin is that I spent a semester in Japan and went to an international school. The students there were from all over the world. If there is a write in option on the ballot can everyone scratch Sarah out and write me in. That would be so cool. I think that I am a lot more qualified than she is, I would be way more entertaining, and I am not in an apocalyptic cult that falsely thinks war will bring about the rapture – so no nuclear winter!

I think you need to understand what you’re talking about before you shoot your mouth off. The ‘present’ vote has nuances that are probably too much for the McCain-ites to understand, but here goes:
Because bills need “yes” votes to pass, “present” translates to “a soft no,” as Deputy Republican Senate Leader Christine Radogno of Lemont put it.
“One use for it is when you favor an idea, but you think the bill has a fatal flaw of some sort,” she said. “Another is when you have a conflict of interest. And another is when you want to play both sides of the fence . . . or to avoid casting a vote that your next opponent will try to take out of context.”
Across the aisle, Sen. John Cullerton, a Chicago Democrat, defined “present” as “no with an explanation.”
Cullerton said another use of the seemingly squirrelly vote is to “signify displeasure with the process, but not the concept.” He added that you’d be hard-pressed to find members of the General Assembly—including key allies of John McCain—who don’t use it from time to time for various reasons.
Illinois legislators have been casting “present” votes since at least 1931, according to the House clerk’s office. But the idea hasn’t swept the nation.
A recent survey by the National Conference of State Legislatures found that only Colorado, Delaware, Massachusetts, Missouri and Texas allow similar options in at least one chamber.
Lawmakers in Hawaii can vote “kanalua,” meaning undecided. But House clerk Pat Mau-Shimizu said Monday that it’s more of a stalling tactic than a hedge or protest, and that “kanalua” turns into a “yes” after the third and final roll call.
Most Hawaiians don’t understand it, she said. And most Illinoisans don’t understand the subtleties of “present” votes, in part because they mean different things (including unsavory, slippery things) at different times.
Obama has defended many of his “present” votes in the Illinois Senate as part of the larger legislative strategy of the Democratic caucus and not a failure of nerve or attempt to conceal his true sentiments from voters.
I’m not here to referee that claim. I’m here to say that there’s only one word for the integrity of those who use the raw number of an Illinois legislator’s “present” votes to draw a conclusion about him: Absent.

McCaine-GIGI 08 – Why would you think that just because someone doesn’t belong to some nutty evangelical church they are a devil worshiper? Do you think Methodists, Lutherans, and other mainstream protestant denominations are all devil worshipers? And maybe she lives in a state that has a perpetual summer, like Hawaii or Southern California, that doesn’t adhere to the ‘white after labor day’ rule. Someone asked earlier about ‘lobbyist consultants’. McCain has placed on his staff more lobbyists than any other ’08 candidate. These are the same ‘fat cats’ that he portends to distain.
Tom Loeffler – Campaign Co-Chair
PhRMA, Southwest Airlines, Toyota, & Martin Marietta.
Slade Gorton – Honorary Chairman for Washington State. Burlington Northern, Sante Fe Corp, Weyerhauser, Fidelity National Financial
David Crane — Sr Policy Advisor. The Washington Group, Delta Airlines, Assoc of American Railroads, and the goverments of Panama and Bangladesh
Charlie Black — Campaign Spokesman.
BKSH & Associates representing JP Morgan, Occidental, and General Motors
CEO Rick Davis — Partner at Davis Manafort whose clients include SBC Communications and Verizon
Christian Ferry
Mike Dennehey
Carly Fiorinna who bailed out of HP with a 42 million dollar parachute after causing 20,000 people to join the unemployment lines.
All told, McCain has 11 lobbyists on his ‘inner circle’ staff. Again, more than ANY OTHER ’08 candidate, republican or democrat. Who do you think will play politics ‘as usual’?

Posted by: ckt | September 23, 2008, 1:16 am 1:16 am

Further, McCain has Phil Gramm as an economic advisor. This is the same Phil Gramm who authored the deregulation bill that has brought you today’s Wall Street Crisis. On the Sunday AM talk shows, Tucker Bounds would not / could not confirm that Gramm wouldn’t be part of a McCain Administration.
The last catastrophic financial mess that confronted the United States was the S&L scandals of the 80s. Ask Sen McCain about the Keating 5 of which he was a part. We have yet to get that mess paid off and now we’re in the midst of a crises that makes the Keating 5 look like a walk in the park.
By the way, Obama threw all lobbyists out of his campaign.

Gigi and Tiff are the usual kind of person that supports subversive people. I live in the Philippines just north of the Muslim MILF. The MILF are murdering innocent men, women and children for nothing more than personal gain. Since you are all so worldly, you should know the meaning of the MILF. There is nothing like Muslim teachings to teach you to how to murder beautiful peace loving people. People that for the most part are hard working farmers and fishermen. These are the same teaching Obama received during his youth and in later years. No one can guarantee that Obama has put aside his Muslim teaching. In fact, a person becomes more of what they are taught as a youngster. He cannot put aside his Muslim teachings or the time with Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., the pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ.
Gigi never think an ex US ARMY man would run from someone like you. Tiff, I hope you are living in the comforts of your habitat. Your assumption of me is dead wrong. Just be ready for the very worse if Obama wins the presidential election. However, after phone calls to my Republican Pennsylvania constituent, they are confirming that Obama is losing the rural vote. Obama may carry Philadelphia, but that race will be closer than is reported by ABC.
If the Democrats would have selected a black Jew, I would consider him a possible selection for my vote as President. Never would I select Obama. I would rather give my vote to McCain no mater what.

Here is the truth about the financial problems:
>
>
For now, unarmed by the historic record, conventional
> wisdom is buying into their blame-business-first rhetoric and bigger-
> government solutions.
> While government arguably has a role in helping low-income folks buy a
> home, Clinton went overboard by strong-arming lenders with tougher and
> tougher regulations, which only led to lenders taking on hundreds of
> billions in subprime bilge.
> Market failure? Hardly. Once again, this crisis has government’s
> fingerprints all over it.

So what is this; The Gospel According to Anne Coulter? From the Rovian depths of hell comes the art of the lie that the republicans have perfected and taken to an inconceivable level. There are so many fallacies in that last post that I don’t even know where to start. Look, you’re wearing me out. Your narrow-minded, uneducated, and psuedo-informed responses are too bizarre to dignify any longer. You talk about propaganda….Do you know how much money really goes to world hunger. The United States pays most of the bills for the United Nations. Countries like Russia and many other nations never pay one red cent to help pay for the United Nations. American taxpayers foot the bill for the UN.
I see hunger here in the Philippines and the United States is one of the few that gives help to the poor in the Philippines. I know medical doctors that come to the Philippines to perform surgeries and other medical procedures here in the Philippines. I do not see much help here in the Philippines if any from other countries.
I know where Obama’s contributions will go. Obama’s contributions will go to help the Muslim countries subvert Democracy. You ignore the truth in the links I ask everyone to read. And you dare talk about propaganda. You live in a fish bowl and the real world passes you by.
The United States helped countries after World War II…countries like Japan, Germany, Philippines, England, France, Italy, Yugoslavia and so many others. The only country that every repaid their debt to the United States was Germany.
You people know crap when it comes to the United States and all the monies it has handed out to help world hunger and in the efforts of peace.

Time to leave and get ready for the US stock market. Two good banks are NPBC and MTB. NPBC is a local bank in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and they have little to do Fannie and Freddie and the Bill Clinton financial mess we have today. MTB has a good history of keeping clear of total ruin. MTB is about half its usual stock value and should soon be at the bottom. Invest at your own risk.

You talk about propaganda….Do you know how much money really goes to world hunger.
THIS COMMENT ALREADY PROVES YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT.
The United States pays most of the bills for the United Nations.
WRONG, THE UNITED STATES IS THE HIGHEST PAYING MEMBER BUT IT DOES NOT PAY MOST OF THE “BILLS”. FUNDING COMES FROM EACH MEMBER NATION USING A PERCENTAGE BASED ON GROWTH, POPULATION INCOME, EXTERNATL DEBT ETC.
Countries like Russia and many other nations never pay one red cent to help pay for the United Nations.
FALSE, ACCORDING TO THE WORLD FEDERATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATIONS, THE TOP EIGHT CONTRIBUTORS TO THE UN ARE: USA (25%); Japan (15.4%); Germany (9%); France (6.4%); the United Kingdom (5.3%); Italy (5.2%); Russia (4.5%); and Canada (3.1%). Collectively, they account for more than 73% of the regular UN budget.
HOW CAN YOU LIE SO, BLATANTLY?????
American taxpayers foot the bill for the UN.
AMERICAN TAXPAYERS MIGHT FOOT THE BILL FOR THE AMOUNT DUE TO THE UN BY AMERICA. WHAT? YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH FOREIGN POLICY? – A TRAVELLED MAN LIKE YOU??? HMMM…..

I know medical doctors that come to the Philippines to perform surgeries and other medical procedures here in the Philippines. I do not see much help here in the Philippines if any from other countries.
FIRST AND FOREMOST WE ARE LUCKY TO LIVE IN SUCH A GREAN COUNTYR. SECOND: THAT WHICH YOU DO NOT SEE DOES NOT EXIST?
THAT SOUNDS LIKE A PERSONAL PROBLEM TO ME, YOU SHOULD GET THAT FIXED.
I know where Obama’s contributions will go. Obama’s contributions will go to help the Muslim countries subvert Democracy.
AND WHICH CONTRIBUTIONS ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? BECAUSE DOT’S COMMENTS ARE ABOUT SENATOR DAVIS’ PROPOSED BILL.
You ignore the truth in the links I ask everyone to read.

And you dare talk about propaganda. You live in a fish bowl and the real world passes you by.
THAT IS YOUR IGNORANT ASSUMPTION. WHEN YOU SERVE ME AN OBJECTIVE WEBSITE I WILL APOLOGYZE TO YOU. IN THE MEANTIME YOU SIR, ARE A FARSE.
The United States helped countries after World War II…countries like Japan, Germany, Philippines, England, France, Italy, Yugoslavia and so many others.
IT IS THANKS TO RESPONSIBLE PEOPLE WHO PUT THEIR COUNTRY FIRST AND THEIR PRIDE AND FEARS ASIDE THAT THIS GREAT NATION OF OURS HAS STRIVED. THIS IS THE LEGACY OF TRUE HEROES. AND MY GENERATION IS IN CHARGE OF MAKING SURE OUR CONSITUTION’S PROMISE OF ALL MEN CREATED EQUAL STRIVES!
The only country that every repaid their debt to the United States was Germany.
You people know crap when it comes to the United States and all the monies it has handed out to help world hunger and in the efforts of peace.

Sarah Palin is both a joke and a distraction. After the initial burst of interest in her, the more that is learned about her, the more she falls flat. Making women pay for rape kits, abortion not even in cases of rape or incest, flouting her stupid daughter’s out of wedlock pregnancy, boasting about killing wolves from a helicopter, well, she PALES in comparision to Biden. I find her hard and cold and nasty, and unintelligent and inexperienced in every way. Not someone I want as my VP. She is not someone worthy of the job. McSame is looking more foolish for this choice every day that goes by.

PBS is doing one of those instant online polls to ask “America” if they
think Sarah Palin is fit to be Vice President.
The GOP has launched a successful all out blitz to get Republicans to go on
the site and click “Yes”. As a result right now it looks like 51% of “America” thinks Palin is qualified. The Republicans are going to be milking
this for all its worth in their press efforts.
We need to drive more Democrats and those opposed to Palin to the site to
click “NO”. Let’s not give the GOP another easy weapon to put in their PR
arsenal!
Here’s the link:

You don’t have to enter your email address or anything, just click “NO”.

LOL! Did she just dis those in Washington with “Big fat resumes?” Did she just describe McCain or WHAT? Her resume is micron-thin! Obama doesn’t have any “executive” experience-but then again, neither does McCain, and the Republicans said this themselves!NOW what? Anyway, what was the date when Republicans morphed “experience” into “EXECUTIVE experience”? Can we say August 29th?
If Palin is so fantastic, then why is she being held away from the media? Oh,I know why-she doesn’t know anything. Her ignorance might be revealed(Huh? Bush Doctrine? Whuzzat?),or she might ignore the question entirely(“Could we have some specific examples of your knowledge of foreign policy?” “If you want to ask specific questions,go ahead…you can even play “Stump The Candidate!”)If she’s for transparency in government, why isn’t she (and others around her, like her husband)cooperating in the “TrooperGate’ investigation? Has America sunk so low that a McCain/Palin ticket is even a possibility? Obama has the judgement and temperment we need today. While McCain was flip-flopping around trying to blame all but his deregulation policies(and eventually blaming Obama)for teh economy crash,Obama was seem huddling with financial gurus(incl.a really rich guy named Buffett)with calm resolve.
Vote for Obama if you want Cool.
Vote for McCain if you want Fool.

“Hey Melsey, your criticism of Sarah Palin’s accent/language shows how small
minded people can truly be (with or without a master’s degree).
Sorry you can’t.”
—————————————-
Sorry Diva, I’m an “educated” woman with a masters and PhD degree in a very high profile field and I support Obama. Do you HONESTLY believe that Palin has good morals/values when:
1. She/her husband are too busy trying to climb to the top rather than talking care of their million kids, one of which is pregnant/high school dropout/going to marry a dropout, and the other of which has Down’s? Shouldn’t SOMEONE be tending to them or is that their 17 year old’s job to hold/take care of the baby?? Sorry, its not being sexist. I choose to have a high profile career but I don’t plan on having 10 kids either.
2. Do you think Palin has good values when she snipes endangered species, such as wolves, from airplanes and takes other endangered species off of the list?
3. Do you think Palin has good values when she makes rape victims pay for their own rape kits?
4. Do you think Palin has good values when she will not allow a woman to choose (oh, and if you force every woman not to have an abortion, then I suspect YOU are willing to take care of the babies and pay for them)?
5. Do you think Palin has good morals and values when she blatantly lied about the bridge to nowhere?
6. Do you think Palin has good morals and values when she talks about going to war with Russia without “blinking for a second?”
7. Do you think Palin has good morals and values when War is just “Gods will” as she has decided it to be, regardless of how many innocent lives will be lost?
8. Do you think McCain has good morals when he cheated on his sick first wife for a younger/MUCH RICHER woman?
If you’re claiming to understand “straight talk” then you BETTER start reading up (not People magazine but something with more substance) and listing out why Palin is SO FULL of straight talk and so much more “moral” than anyone else. Its sickening to live in a country where the word “educated” is replaced with elistist, snobbery, etc. So in your world, does “educated” mean excuses, someone who believes and perpetuates lies, and someone who will vote a vapid and unskilled woman into office just because they’re a woman (not to mention what a mockery she is making of women)? If so, please keep making excuses, keep believing that McCain/Palin are so honest and full of integrity when the rest of the world isnt, keep ignoring the plethora of FACTS that despute the lies, keep ignoring the fact that Palin’s experience revolves around seeing some piece of land from her window and McCain’s is merely age and a “lack of understanding about the economy.” But then…you shouldn’t call yourself educated in the process. I dont want some “down home” ignorance running this country…you see what just happened for the past 8 years since all of you “educated” people elected and re-elected our current president. Its time for insight and intelligence. If that makes me elitist, so be it for the future of our country.

Obviously, you can tell who are the real un-educated idiots on this site when they keep saying “Muslim Obama, Muslim Obama, Muslim Obama…….” Its like Hitler once said, “keep repeating the lies and people will eventually believe them.” Obviously you guys are McCain’s cronies since WE ALL KNOW that Obama is NOT MUSLIM (he’s Christian)…look it up for yourselves, if you know how to use computers, that is.

Posted by: disgusted | September 23, 2008, 11:17 am 11:17 am

Oh…I forgot to add an important point and that is if Obama was a Muslim, then why has he been the ONLY ONE to keep saying that we should have/should put troops in Pakistan to dismember terrorist cells? Since you people may not know this, but Pakistan is a MUSLIM country.

In From England:
The Republican party, as a whole, does not make stupid moves. It’s one reason why they’ve stayed in power for so long.
A friend of mine puts it succinctly: Democrats wish to govern. Republicans wish to rule.
………………………………
My thoughts were … Thatcher but with a semi-automatic rifle !
……………………………….
I think many people here have missed the boat on Sara Palin.
From what I’ve been able to determine, she is no stranger to power politics. She is not a mere hockey mom; she is an actual power in the Republican elite. McCain and she have served together in government capacities and she has a political presence that goes all the way back to her beauty-queen days in Alaska.
Democrats need to understand that she is not a “desperate” choice. This was a brilliant pick because she is everything she is said not to be: intelligent, witty, connected and in control, yet she is being marketed as just another “mom”, and so far we’re falling for it.
Shame on us.

More From England:
If being Thatcher-esque means being strong enough to take on the Washington DC establishment (both sides of the aisle) and put government back in the hands of the people (instead of the pockets of politicians) then Sarah Palin is exactly what is needed.
Interesting to note that entrenched politicians in DC (both Democrat and Republican) are not exactly glowing in their praise of Palin (to me, too many Republican nods in Palin’s direction looked forced). To me, this means she is a threat to the corruption, overspending, and self interests of Congressional politicians who have for far too long (again, both parties!) taken our hard earned tax dollars and basically, shamelessly, served themselves.
This election goes far beyond the single issue debates of abortion or universal health care. Washington DC is corrupt to the core and must be tackled by someone who can hold CONGRESS (in charge of our money) accountable to the PEOPLE!
We must hold our federal government officials’ feet to the fire (so to speak), demand that our tax dollars are not (criminally) spent on bridges going nowhere, taxpayer funded vacations, and oil company subsidies.
Until the US Congress’ members start to feel the heat and anger of the US voting population and begin to represent the needs of the people who voted them to Washington in the first place, one issue voting agendas will continue to be moot points.
Right now, Sarah Palin seems to be leading the charge as a Washington DC “outsider” and, yes, that will definitely bring out the critics—from both sides/parties.

Correction for GIGI:
Margaret Thatcher’s home and early life in Grantham played a large part in forming her political convictions. Her parents, Alfred and Beatrice Roberts, were Methodists. The social life of the family was lived largely within the close community of the local congregation, bounded by strong traditions of self-help, charitable work, and personal truthfulness.
The Roberts family ran a grocery business, bringing up their two daughters in a flat over the shop. Margaret Roberts attended a local state school and from there won a place at Oxford, where she studied chemistry at Somerville College (1943-47). Her tutor was Dorothy Hodgkin, a pioneer of X-ray crystallography who won a Nobel Prize in 1964.
But chemistry took second place to politics in Margaret Thatcher’s future plans. Conservative politics had always been a feature of her home life: her father was a local councillor in Grantham and talked through with her the issues of the day. She was elected president of the student Conservative Association at Oxford and met many prominent politicians, making herself known to the leadership of her party at the time of its devastating defeat by Labour at the General Election of 1945.

More from England:
In the 1950s Margaret Thatcher trained as a lawyer, specialising in taxation. She was elected to Parliament in 1959 as Member of Parliament (MP) for Finchley, a north London constituency, which she continued to represent until she was made a member of the House of Lords (as Baroness Thatcher) in 1992. Within two years, she was given junior office in the administration of Harold Macmillan and during 1964-70 (when the Conservatives were again in Opposition), established her place among the senior figures of the party, serving continuously as a shadow minister. When the Conservatives returned to office in 1970, under the premiership of Edward Heath, she achieved cabinet rank as Education Secretary.

The British speak out:
I’m British by birth, lived through the Thatcher years in England, and I agree with Justin – Palin is a young, marginally more likeable, more attractive version of Thatcher, personality-wise, as presented last night.
Obviously, as someone commented above, Thatcher was better known and brought more relevant experience when she came to power, but that doesn’t negate the similarity in personality and political outlook.
If McCain wins this election, and you ahappen to be someone with even one a left-wing bone in your body – be very afraid! ;-)

Sarah Palin will be meeting with World Leaders in New York today. Rest assured they will find her very charming just as they would be charmed by a meeting with another Hockey Mom or Soccer Mom or even a Hockey Child. We will not know what transpires during that meeting but I can tell you this: I have met at least one of the people who will meet with her and I have had the opportunity to meet and greet him on many occasions since then. The first time I actually met him was over thirty years ago. I am an average individual who is the spouse of another average individual who is often in attendance at events where the attendants are for the most part very prominent individuals that might also include royalty.
Another event about ten years ago, attended only by statesmen and world leaders, past and present, and very few others, began with a reception that was so crowded that one could hardly make a pathway through to get by. As I pushed my way by a small group of men who had their backs turned to me he reached out and grabbed my hand to speak to me. The last time I saw him was at an event about two years ago and again he was exceedingly charming.
Most world leaders are very cordial and gracious to most other people. Palin will be treated by them with the same regard. They will very likely treat her with the same respect extended to me or to anyone else of any station in life. The difference will be that I know I am not presidential or vice presidential material and this meeting will not miraculously turn her into such either.

Biden cannot keep up with Obama’s lies.
“NO coal plants here in America,” Biden said. “Build them, if they’re going to build them, OVER THERE. Make them clean.”
Hey Joe, be sure to repeat that message at all your campaign stops in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky—especially to all those Union Coal Miners. Idiot.
This answer fits quite nicely into John McCain’s case that Obama has been saying “no” to ALL new sources of energy. As they said at the Dem convention, “The most important barrel of oil is the one we don’t use.”
McCain did not miss a beat:
ARLINGTON, VA — Congresswoman Shelly Moore Capito (R-WV), former Virginia Governor and Senator George Allen, former Congressman Scott McInnis (R-CO) and RNC Chairman Mike Duncan will announce the McCain-Palin campaign’s Coalition to Protect Coal Jobs, a nationwide group including members of Congress, state government and other influential leaders. The coalition will help spread the message about the importance of clean coal technology and the advantages of tapping the country’s vast coal reserves. As part of John McCain’s “all of the above” energy plan, the Lexington Project, clean coal will be a strong component of the drive to energy independence. In addition to providing domestic energy, the coal industry is a key part of the economy in several states.
John McCain’s support for clean coal technology is in sharp contrast to that of his opponents. Joe Biden visited Virginia on Saturday, saying that he was a “hard-coal miner” and that it was “nice to be back in coal country” while Obama supporter, Congressman Rick Boucher (D-VA) said “Senator Obama’s a friend of coal.” But just two days later in Ohio, Senator Biden said he wants “no coal plants here in America” and that he and Senator Obama are “not supporting clean coal.”

I don’t know if I’m the first actual Alaskan to post here, but I can tell you that not everyone in Alaska loves Palin, especially with her having abandoned us completely to McCain’s Rovian mechanisms. This woman is an ignorant, small town, right wing nutcase, and Alaska is a world unto itself. Being able to govern here in Alaska, to the small extent she has done so, has ZILCH to do with her ability to serve in a national or international capacity. And the National Guard thing? Please. She loses control of that as soon as they are mobilized, and there’s a mere handful up here anyway.
Those voters who want someone like “you” in office: do you really think any of those wealthy Republican corporate sell-outs care about you or can relate to you in any way?
