Police Clash with Demonstrators, Make Arrests at RNC

ABC News’ Jennifer Duck and Lindsey Ellerson Report: Police arrested hundreds of anti-war protesters outside of the Republican convention hall Thursday night in St. Paul. Over 1,000 demonstrators marched from the State Capitol to the Xcel Energy Center, where tens of the thousands of Republican delegates and party elite gathered to hear Sen. John McCain’s acceptance speech.

Police in riot gear swarmed the area outside the convention center, deploying tear gas and distraction devices known as "flash bangs" in an attempt to disperse the crowd.

Approximately three-hundred protesters were held on the bridge for nearly an hour over Interstate 94 in St. Paul. After hours of people protesting, police instructed demonstrators to file onto the bridge and then announced everyone would be arrested, refusing to allow anyone off the overpass. Law enforcement barricading the bridge fired pepper spray, instructing protesters to put their hands behind their heads.

ABC News’ Jennifer Duck was trapped with the marchers on the bridge and observed many young children scared and crying. She spoke to several marchers who said they wanted to go home, but the police refused to allow any movement. Members of the media, and many trying to follow police direction were being pepper sprayed in the face.

One policeman told ABC News that a firearm was confiscated from a protester on the bridge and that people were throwing rocks.

The RNC’s Joint Information Center told ABC News that 88 arrests have been made on Thursday thus far, but more than 200 demonstrators are on their way now to Ramsey County Jail to be detained.

At least some of the protesters were part of the Anti-War Committee, who organized an afternoon rally on the capitol, followed by a march to the Xcel Energy Center, where the RNC is being held. At 5pm central, the protesters’ permit expired, but demonstrators refused to leave. The crowd of nearly 700 stood at a standstill with the police as they tried to march from the capitol to the Xcel Center without success. The protesters, chanting, "Let us march!" and "No blood for oil, U.S. off Iraqi soil!" were non-violent in their actions. At one point, approximately 100 people sat down in the middle of the street, in front of more than two-dozen officers on horses, making the peace sign with their hands and singing the star spangled banner.

"Protesters felt that tonight was an important night to demonstrate in St. Paul. The eyes of the world are on John McCain tonight," said Meredith Aby of the Anti-War Committee in a statement to the press. "We felt it was imperative that his message of war did not go unchallenged. The police and the city of St. Paul decided to make downtown a Republican speech zone, but our demonstration challenged their decision."

Since the Republican National Convention began, there have been several riots in St. Paul and Minneapolis, protesting the Iraq war and the Bush administration’s policies. The most disruptive protest took place on Monday, when violence broke out at a rally organized by the Coalition to March on the RNC and Stop the War. It was estimated that 8,000-10,000 people were present and more than 280 demonstrators were arrested.

Peter – do you care that Gov Palin made several false statements during her speech? Do some real research.
There was on demonstrator that interrupted McCain’s speech. The person appeared to be dressed like a man, but pulled off a jacket and the person appeared to be a woman. There was considerable shouting. Not sure how many people were involved.

If the police conducted themselves like this in any other country there would be howls of protest. This is the only country where this sort of blatant brutality can take place under the color of authority. It’s also the only country in the world where a cop can shoot you dead just for reaching for your wallet and be back to work the next day. The police in this country are the single biggest argument for lenient gun laws and an extremely well armed populace. Self defense doesn’t just include defense against criminals. These thugs might want to remember that when visiting the State of Maine.

They really did a wonderful job expressing themselves. Right-wings nuts? I saw a bunch of liberal looneys. Why would the liberal media, led by the disgusting K. Olbermann, not show right-wing nuts? They would revel in it. Go worship at the throne of Obama and Ayers, it will be over soon enough.

“WOW!! So now we using iran and China as a barometer for our freedom.”
Exactly. And for the record the police in this country kill an average of 50 to 60 COMPLETELY INNOCENT people a year. Grandmothers, kids, and yes – many times just people reaching for their ID. And in almost any SANE country in the world cops would go to jail for that. Not one cop was convicted of shooting and innocent person in this country in the last five years ! Not One ! Yet they blithely gunned down a couple of hundred innocents in that time frame ??? Where else in the world can that happen and the international community just says oh well ?? Only in America folks, where if a cop even FEELS scared he can shoot you and it’s legal. If he (or she) just THINKS they saw a gun, BANG your dead. And if the cops get the wrong address and kick down YOUR door instead, and you react as anyone would at your door crashing in and reach for your pistol BANG your dead. That’s just flippin’ lunacy man.

I was there with a cameraman and we watched as a street-filled rally marched by us for 1-2 hours. MUCH MORE THAN 10000! This is what the AP says, which got the the number from the police. Mack – Actually police love using force. I have a friend in Albuquerque that is a deputy and he loves when the druggies don’t stop when told because he said he gets to tackle them. He was a former linebacker at UNM so he could do some damage. Many cops are obsessed with dispensing violence themselves. The get a high. Yeah well welcome to my world. Being a liberal Democrat who is pro-Second Amendment has actually been a real pain. No one likes me, not my own Party – certainly not my GOP opponent. But the fact of the matter is that sometimes Freedom and Liberty must be defended with force, even lethal force if necessary. And I would remind you that balance has more or less kept us free for over two centuries. The fact that we can even have this debate, or possibly elect a black man to the Presidency is proof of this.
Life is filled with often amazing examples of polar opposites being in balance. I guess a liberal Democrat pro-gun Jeffersonian might just be the answer. It works for my constituents, I am likely to take my District by a landslade on the 4th of November.

After watching this week’s Republican convention, I have come to realize we live in a truly divided nation. I honestly do nott understand the Republican mindset. How can they preach America First when their delegates represented a monolithic white America? http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/03/AR2008090303962.html?hpid=artslot
How can this group pretend to represent America? It’s mind boggling. The Republicans need to reassess who they are and what they are all about. They do not represent the diversity which makes this great nation the best on earth.

There are so many factual errors in this story it is ridiculous. One of the biggest is that there was never any tear gas releases, flash bangs and smoke bombs yes, tear gas no. Go to local Minnesota coverage if you want the real story.

“I grew up in NJ with very strict gun laws and police shootings were very rare. I now live in Las Vegas, and the gun laws are lenient, but there are very many police shootings here. Not sure what the answer is.”
I think you may be confusing our definition of lenient. In Vermont there are NO restrictions on carrying a concealed weapon. Want to go to the store and feel safe ? Just stuff your pistol under your windbreaker and jet. No permit, permission or anything. Now THAT is lenient. And guess what, they have almost NO gun violence at all in Vermont. Very few criminals at all actually.
By comparison in Maine we are a little stricter then Vermont, but not much. Until recently you could buy long rifles without parent permission at age 16. Even that was a bit extreme for me but you get my point. By comparison (and yes I have been in all 50 States actually) Nevada is quite strict indeed.
Finally, what sort of police shootings are we talking about ? Our police shoot plenty of folks up here, even kill a few. But guess what folks, the ones they kill SHOT FIRST. And that is my flippin’ point. Gunning down un-armed and innocent civilians is one thing. But I am all for them lighting up anyone one who shoots at them first.

They were crossing a bridge for god sakes there were kids and reporters with them. And this is ABC so anyone see that ABC reporter get brutalized, I did – right here on this Site. Again I say show me ONE incident where this level of force was directed BY the protesters AT the cops ? Makes me wish they would get hip and order their own flash bangs and tear gas. And some of those great oaken sticks to bash them with. Make it a fair fight. Daarn that was sarcastic, sorry. But WHAT VIOLENCE did these peole do ? Bad Blogger Doyon -
Best of luck winning an election – you sound crazy.
The reality is, the media conservative or liberal doesn’t always get the story right or show the whole story. Being in St. Paul for the past week – I can tell you that most protesters were not violent for the most part. Rather, they were flat out stubborn. Police monitored all protests and walks and left them alone unless they were growing hostile or breaking the law. Both the protest gone wrong today and yesterday were from protesters breaking the law and refusing to leave the Capitol once their permit had ended. At that point police told them they needed to exit since their permit had expired. This is a law. They refused to leave and ended up sitting in the middle of a very busy road still within the Capitol Complex. After over an hour police were forced to notify the crowd that if they did not exit they would be arrested. This is one example that sums up the scenarios taking place the last few days. Protesters are allowed as long as they don’t break the law. The media just likes to show you the arrests taking place not situations that happened before it or the background on why they were creating hostility.

From 1932 to 1945 the good people of Germany, had to put up with a gangster organization known as the “GESTAPO”. Transulated means “German State Police”. This organization employed terrorist methods against people suspected of disloyalty to Germany..Tonight we witnessed “GESTAPO” tactics again only used against American’s suspected of not being Republicans..Only in this country they are known of as “COPS”.And beat up everybody and anybody not Republican, or a BUSH/McCAIN LOVER..History does repeat it self..

I am a Cop and I take serious offense to the quote I just pulled. If you think I am going to WAIT to be shot at FIRST in order to “light someone up” then you are truly a frigging idiot. There is NOTHING, and WILL BE NOTHING written EVER that says law enforcement will have to trust that the bad guy is a bad shot and let them SHOOT FIRST.
I WILL GO HOME AT THE END OF MY SHIFT EVERY NIGHT AND I WILL DO ALL I CAN TO ENSURE MY PARTNERS GO HOME AS WELL.
In regards to your “reaching for a wallet” comment……….if you are speaking vaguely and we are not picking apart a specific incident then we can talk. If I detain you and order you to show me your hands, keep them in plain sight, and so forth……………… YOU HAD BETTER LISTEN. If you do as ordered everything will be fine. We deal with the UNKNOWN on a daily basis. I don’t know if you are an accountant on his way home to his family or a man who just murdered his family, neighbors, and still isn’t done yet. An intelligent person would follow clear instructions to stop, raise your hands, don’t move, and so on.
I don’t care if you are in a hurry, feel that you are above my job and shouldnt have to deal with this and all the other excuses I have heard. Tragic accidents can and will happen. That’s life. Deal with it. But if I tell you to freeze and you reach for the back of your waistband where the majority of crooks keep their guns…………….Say hello to Jesus for me when ya see him because you won’t survive your encounter with me. All one has to do is slow their busy life down, breathe, and listen.

Mac,
You do not know how protesters are treated in China or Iran. You haven’t been there. What are you talking about?
You don’t even seem to know any international policies at all.
You just seem like a fundamentalist republican who thinks has the right to throw stones to whomever does not agree with this government procedures.
But if you are so keen into defending the Republican government, maybe is time to act like Cain, who agreed that this country has gone to hell because of the abuses committed by the Republican party in the last 8 years.

Protesters 0 Police 280 and rising. Police serving and protecting the public that werent breaking the law. Hmmm ……… Im having a difficult time finding any sympathy for the protesters or fault with the police. Perhaps if the protesters had policed themselves and kept everyone “civil” the police wouldnt have had a reason to do anything except watch the parade.
Its a free country and we have the right to assemble and protest. But not the right to damage other peoples property injure others in the process.
We dont have the right to break the law.
For those who didnt do anything wrong – consider those you associate with.
This year I see a clear choice -
Someone who talks the talk or someone who walks the walk.
Actions speak louder than words.
Comparing the two only action actually accomplishes anything, and words…. promises and lies sound exactly the same when well crafted.

Think about it, when do you EVER see Conservatives out of order protesting in the streets like a pack of two year olds??? You Don’t and that is exactly why the conservatives are more intelligent and most often better looking then the hoards of mutant wall eyed liberals. Look at people like Harry Reid, or Nazi Pelosi, What’s up with them??? Sickly looking mutants and it is the liberalism disease that causes them folks to look like they do…UGLY….LMAO”
THE PROTESTERS WERE NOT LIBERAL, THEY WERE REPUBLICANS FOR RON PAUL….LOL

Conservatives do not protest because they love this government and the actual economical and political situation.
Conservatives love to lose their jobs, be sent to die in a war for oil, lose their homes, die without medical benefits, be taken away all their private rights, be lied, be cheated, be poorer today than 10 years ago…
There are so many reason why conservatives are joyful today, that why in the world would they protest?

Posted by: tired of reps. | September 5, 2008, 4:52 am 4:52 am

clarifications from a first-person view.
a small percentage of protesters belong to the “RNC Welcoming Committee”, and yes, they are militant.
unfortunately, still, even a peaceful protest (thursday’s anti-war march barred and unprovoked police attacks) are affected by the suspicion of “anarchists” abound.
and after chatting with the cops who arrested me (peacefully) they sympathize somewhat with the protesters.
it’s a damned blue state, for god’s sake.

Why did the Iraqi’s attack American troops… because they are there. Why do the police assault the protestors… Because they are there. Do you SEE the pattern yet? Besides, there have been several instances whre police dress up as protestors, turn over newpaper stands, throw things, smash windows and property and use it as an excuse to charge and arrest people, because they are there in the street using their first amendment right. (Google video “The eye of the Storm) And again, this is NOT just “liberals” in the street. In a matter of months when Obama is President god forbid, YOU will be protesting and YOU will be getting the same treatment at the hands of the militarized police. When your bank collapses, and you are lucky if you get ten cents on the dollar back if anything at all; Don’t sit there and try to tell me that your a commie because you are exersing your right to protest the fact that your money was STOLEN from you from the big bankers and looters on Wall street. Nobody is going to feel sorry for you, until it happens to them. But by then you won’t have a computer to type your concerns about anyway, since at that point you will have probably SOLD everything you own, just trying to get something back in order to ward off your creditors. Welcome to the new Amerika.

I believe Obama called upon Bill Ayers to get his friends on the streets.

Posted by: janephilip | September 5, 2008, 5:56 am 5:56 am

Mr. Obama has proposed a massive tax increase on investors, business owners, and the “wealthy.” At a time when the American people rate the economy as the central issue of the campaign, a tax hike doesn”t make a lot of political sense. Voters know that a tax hike won”t help the economy.
Moreover, Mr. Obama”s tax plans would directly or indirectly harm U.S. investors by raising the capital gains and dividend taxes. More than half of U.S. households are equity owners, so Mr. Obama”s proposal risks alienating half the population.
Mr. Obama claims to offer a tax cut to moderate-income families, but a significant portion of Mr. Obama”s tax plan is a welfare giveaway costing more than $648 billion over 10 years, according to the Tax Policy Center.

I lived in South Korea for 8 years in both major cities..Seoul and Taegu. These folks really know how to run a great protest..They come fully prepared in the same kind of protective suits the cops have…They bring thousands of 5 gallon bottles of propane with a hose and a nozzel attached and when the going gets tough they lite off the propane cylinders like flame throwers and attack the cops..By now the cops are doing the 100 yard dash in under 5 seconds to get out of the way..They could show our folks a few things…You got to love them..They even have 100 gallon propane tanks manned by 3 guys..It is a ball to watch them..They could have even toasted many Republicans, tonight..and that would have been fun to watch. They snap like pop corn.

Stood up against a war that our troops should not be fighting. for all those who took the time to rally against the policies of the current admin. Those who were protesting without violence and still got pepper sprayed, know that your actions, as well actions against you did not go unseen. Know that you do make a difference…with deepest appreciation, Thank you
I think our troops would be happy to know of your push for peace. I don’t want my son fighting a war of politics either.

They are good little nazis and tow the line like robots. Your damned right they dont go out and protest, because they believe its unpatriotic to protest, because thats what the robot main control tells them is the truth. Its jackbooted nazi police tatics that only serve to instill more retributions. People complain about Ayers and his ilk, but these police tactics are what gave rise to their beliefs. And history does tend to repeat itself. Just because someone is for peace doesnt mean they wont fight for justice. To protest, and indeed rise up against injustice and tyranny, is the ULTIMATE patriotic act. Republicans are mindless idiots and liberals are truly freedom fighters, much like our founding fathers.

Here is a thought-provoking matter to ponder over about Gov Palin. In Alaska there is a Statutory Rape law on the books that says that if an 18yr old has sex with a 17yr old it is a felony, and this law is implicit. Though I personally don’t agree with teens having sex because of what can possibly happen, as in the case with Gov Palin’s daughter. However, my argument is not whether an 18yr old should be arrested for having sex with a 17yr old, which I am not all that crazy about, but the law is the law. It can also be argued that Gov Palin has been an irresponsible parent for allowing it to happen, by not taking a stronger stand in educating her daughter about what can happen if she makes the choice to date and have sex, not to mention his age. This has more to do with Gov Palin being an irresponsible elected official, for not upholding the laws that she took an oath to uphold. Gov Palin along with others are treating this only as a personal matter, while totally disregarding its legal implication. I know this has caused personal embarrassment for Gov Palin, and I can sympathize with her for the embarrassment it has caused. Yet Irrespective of your differences with my opinion on this matter, I am sure we can all agree that we need someone in the Whitehouse that would implement the laws that they are entrusted to uphold. Because when we take a closer look at this matter, without any doubt there is a double standard being applied in this case, while many youngsters around the Country are serving jail time for commenting this same offense? After all, isn’t the Republican the ones that are always saying building more prisons, is what this Country needs? How can we allow Gov Palin to govern America, with this type of mentality? I HOPE THIS IS NOT WHAT SHE MEANS WHEN SHE SAYS THAT SHE IS A MAVERICK!

I live in St. Paul. I saw what was going on yesterday and the entire week, both first hand and through the local news. This article is biased in the extreme. The police sat on one side of a bridge for an hour waiting out the protesters whose permit had expired withouot taking any action to disperse them, while the group held up rush hour traffic. They were free to turn around and go back accross the bridge the way they came. The only time anyone was told they could not leave is once they committed a crime and were under arrest

Posted by: Minnesotan | September 5, 2008, 7:47 am 7:47 am

Wait that’s what they heard on Fox that the protesters were “VIOLENT”, yeah that’s the ticket they were violent and they had guns and they didn’t bath for God’s sake what kind “hooligans” are they, they didn’t even bath? When I was there age we wore coats and ties to a “protest” and splashed on Aqua Velva, and we liked it. Hooligans just dirty hooligans.
Maybe Fox even spliced in some footage from the 60′s Chicago riots to make it even more believable to their flock of sheep.
Repeat after me, protest is “bad”, protest is anti-freedom yeah, that’s the ticket…

Former aides to Hillary Clinton have criticized “sexist” attacks on Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin questioning her devotion to her family.
Sarah Palin found some unlikely allies Wednesday as leading academics and even former top aides to Hillary Rodham Clinton endorsed the Republican charge that John McCain’s running mate has been subject to a sexist double standard by the Obama news media and Democrats. My friends and I are now Democrats for John & Sarah.

Let’s see …
- The permit expired at 5:00 p.m.
- Police gave ample time and multiple warnings to disperse.
- The crowd failed to comply, and in fact employed new stalling tactics like squatting in the street.
- Police use force to arrest permit violators.
Please tell me where the egregious breach of civil rights occured. The police are paid to protect all of the citizens of St. Paul, including the several hundred thousand that were not protesting. If you choose to protest and demonstrate, and I will defend that right to the ends of the earth, then you must accept the responsibility that comes along with your actions. Liberals always fail to understand this basic tenet: with rights come responsibilities.

I agree the speech was alright last night, it wasn’t as entertaining as Palins but McCain did offer an olive branch to the moderate demmies. I swear I think they need to make a 3rd party called the moderates that could take from both the Republican and Democrat parties for those of us not far left or far right nuts.

These rioters are like many kids are before they grew up. Did not listen to authority, stomp and scream, throw and destroy, and do not really know why they are doing it when having their tantrum. Then when they get disciplined it is the authority that gets blamed for doing their job, to protect and serve.
There is nothing wrong with demonstrating when it has a theme, message and the message is more important then destroying and blaming the officers for doing their jobs.
Just as young uneducated, spoiled brats with respect for anything.

These demonstrators had a chance to tell reporters their cause but would not tell their story or even show their faces. They are just plain old chicken s**t scum. I’m not sure where some of you guys get your information? I live in St. Paul, and in fact, I was right over that very same bridge.
You know what happens when people form crowds/riots/protests in the several hundreds? They become one autonomous mass, and anonymous.
All of these people were not at fault, this is true I’m sure, but the problem is that 10% were, and those 10% were part of the single mass of people.
The police need to maintain order. If you are throwing rocks, bricks whatever, or if you are creating bombs, etc. the police have every right to beat you down. If you do not follow orders, you will be beat down. That goes for “non-violent” protest. If an officer of the law asks you to get up and walk with him, you do it. If you don’t, you deserve to be tasered, pepper sprayed, or whatever else he feels is necessary to provoke a sense of cooperation.
The police have been more than willing to allow protests and marches.
And LarryMan is right. As soon as it’s your business/home being burned and destroyed I’m sure it’s “where’s the police?”

John McCain in his seech promised that he will “Make this government start working for you again.”
But John McCain as a 26 year Senator in Washington during the last 8 years had all the opportunity to ‘Make the government work for us again, but he chose not to.’ In fact John McCain help to make the government NOT work for the middle class U S American citizen or working poor in this country.

Posted by: mere | September 5, 2008, 11:10 am 11:10 am

John McCain also promises to “Get this country back on the road to prosperity…”
However John McCain and his Republican Party for the past 8 years in Washington are the reason why this country’s prosperity is NONE EXISTANT.
In fact from 2001 thru till the end of 2006 It was the Republicans who controlled both the Senate and the Congress. Yet during that entire time This country’s prosperity was on a steep continuous decline and John McCain did nothing in 8 years to stop it since it was his Republicans buddies and himself who were Responsible for it in the first place.

Police gave no notice or reason for blocking the march when we arrived at the bridge or at any other time. On the local FOX station they showed police giving the order to leave, what they didn’t show was that this order was given from over a hundred yards away during the pre march rally, and it was completely drowned out by the speaker and crowd. After that police said nothing to the crowd.
90% of the crowd was peaceful and respectful as where 90% of the police.

First of all I do know enough about Bill Ayers the problem is you don’t know enough about Bill Ayers or Tony Rezko, you just believe what your prof told you

Tom-
I checked Bill Ayers wikipedia. From what I read I would say he was a criminal. I don’t condone violence. peaceful civil disobedience yes, violence no.

Well, we’ll know, just like NYC2004 from the number of people who are actually found guilty of the charges — how inflated those charges actually are.
It appears the real goal is to target and harass the news reporters, in the hopes that they will become controllable and embedded.
Y’know, the word SAFETY is used ONCE in the bill of rights, and it’s not in the context of keeping anyone SAFE, but to show the rigid limits on the suspense of Habeas Corpus rights.

The prolife people are not violent ? Don’t make me laugh, what about the bombs thrown at clinics the doctors Killed and others shot at .From what I saw and read a fringe group caused the trouble not the anti-war protestors.Denver handled tthe protestors much much better than di the police in St. Paul. Why were the peaceful protestors stopped,? maybe because the NRP did not want that on the news Too bad Many people are against the war and want our men and women home regardless of what McCain and Palin want. Are we going against the people of Iraq and what they want so we can occupy their land for 100 years as McCain wants?

Noticed a comment referencing FactCheck.org as if that’s a legit source:
“FactCheck itself, as a project primarily funded by the Annenberg Foundation, hardly fits the bill of being a disinterested party, especially given Obama’s four year stint as founding chair of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, currently being investigated due to its massive withholding of papers which document the catestrophic failure of the project, including public funds wasted under Obama’s leadership, and his relations in that project with former Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers.”

Please, some of you, try and get some help, take your meds, you will feel better.
Anti-war protesters don’t know JS about the military, war, or how to protect America. Those of us who did serve, we know a little about the military. We know that if you don’t go after them, they will come here and get YOU.
After all, 9/11 never happened. Right?
Get those heads out into the sunlight.

There were more protesters in St Paul than GOP Delegates. The protester’s, along with the media trying to cover the story were unjustly beaten, sprayed and arrested. St Paul was like a police state. Just goes to show you how ANGRY the American People are with the Republicans.

Yeesh, come election day half of Obama’s volunteers are going to be in jail for showing off their level of maturity in public.
Oh well, they can always cry that Obama was Swift-Palin’d or Sarah-Boated.

It is sad that we seem to be losing our right to protest peaceably in public. Didn’t we learn anything from Kent State and the civil rights protest? The opinions of the majority should matter. Protesting the Iraq War is simply the voice of the majority of Americans.

All of you Obama/Marxist supporters need to get a life. If Obama wins, then America gets viewed as a welcome mat by all violent regimes the world over. Not to mention your taxes go sky-high and the size of government increases. I don’t agree with everything McCain says, but he’s definitely the lesser of two evils.
If you Obamanites want to live under such a communist/marxists/socialist regime as Barack Hussein Obama is proposing, then why don’t you just move to China? I’m sure they’d love to have you.
Jump on board the Stop-Obama Express!! Go Rush! Go Hannity! Go Levin!!!!!

LarryMan, way to say it. I’m sure the Dummy-crats and Liberals were really getting their point across by breaking windows and damaging other property.
Obama is a Marxist who associates with terrorists and anti-Americans/anti-Patriots. Voting him would be an absolute disaster. He definitely sounds like the Anti-Christ referred to in the Bible.

My name is Nancy Lazaryan and I co-host a live cable TV program in the Twin Cities. I was at the protest on Thursday evening.
My co-host was at the state capital early Thursday evening (about 6PM) and said there wasn’t much happening. He asked that I up to pick up a cameraperson so we would have footage for our program on Weds. night. I brought a cameraperson and then my co-host left, saying he was hungry and for me to cover the story.
I was caught in the bedlam of the police attack.
I WAS NOT PARTICIPATING IN THE PROTEST.
We have on film my repeatedly yelling that we were the Press and the police then turning and shooting at us. The police then threw tear gas canisters at us and one went off a foot away and I was injured from the shrapnel.
We were “alone”. We were not a part of the crowd.
We fled the shots and I lost my cameraperson. I was then ordered into a rearing horse and I refused and walked “safely around”, only to be full body maced.
I found my cameraperson and we tried to get to my car but were forced into the crowd. The police then lined up the horses and stampeded us. For hours I sat on the cold concrete of the bridge as temperatures dropped and my body was soaked with mace. When I was handcuffed, my shoulder was dislocated. I complained and asked that I be cuffed in front, but was refused.
The videos we have of the BRUTAL, UNPROVOKED ATTACK on the Citizens AND the Press will be broadcast Weds. night. DVDs will be made and distributed, as well as posted on the web.
The protesters DID have a permit to march and began their march within the timeframe of the permit. They were NOT allowed to march.
SO WHO WERE THE LAWBREAKERS??
As a fellow Citizen, I wonder if you care.
Our elected officials need to speak out against this outrageous attack and to stand with the People in defending our secured rights.
The Republicans are being painted as the “demons” in this attack.
People do not know that the St. Paul city council (DFL controlled) has promoted and endorsed police brutality. There is a St. Paul city ordinance that any building in St. Paul can be searched at any time, without a warrant.
I received videos and an email from another reporter, demanding all the Republicans out of office. True servants of the People in ANY party need to make a public outcry of what happened on Thursday night. The TRUTH needs to come out as to whom orchestrated this attack.
Right now, the Republican Party, at the very least, is being painted a complacent to the attack…and at the most, having implemented it.
GRAND JURY!
Nancy Lazaryan

Nancy…..Now you know what the Germans went thru for 12 years under the GESTAPO…German State Police….Here we call them “COPS” it will only get worse if McBush wins in November.

My son, a college honors student, was peacefully protesting the war in St. Paul. When he ran from the macing, the police chased him, beat him up with clubs and fists, tazered him twice, and maced him repeatedly. He was arrested and his attorney was denied access to see him. He was finally released from jail after 18 hours with no charge. He is wiped out, face bruised, and hands numb. This treatment is an outrage to our democracy.

so sick of the nazi republicans we americans cant speak out against king george and the evil empire republicans. well yes change is coming and it will be us true americans sweeping away the republicans from washington and returning this nation to we the people.

The problem with taking on the police to stop THEM from acting illegally (or for any other reason) is that the police then roll out the SWAT teams, who just love getting to bring out all their stuff and maybe use it. These guys get a rush from battling a worthy opponent. And that takes all the fun out of BEING a worthy opponent, if you ask me.

All you so-called Americans, supporting your right wing racist, rich, hypocritical fascist ideas of bombing innocent countries killing the economy, trying to burn the constitution have no idea what in the world your talking about. The first amendment and protesting is what makes us a great nation, not mindless war, lies and police brutality. If you are so thickheaded that you can’t realize what’s going on here, and your too stupid to decipher the truth, and are unable to value your freedom of speech and true liberty then by all means move to Russia. The last thing the U.S. needs is a bunch of nazi fascists who
would rather live in a corrupt police state then have the freedom to protest. Honestly I think those right wing republicans should just go back to Hypocrisy Island and suffocate themselves on their own selfish bullshit while the rest of us take America back and restore the country to what it used to be. Go protesters, OI! OI! OI!

Posted by: Christopher Marsh | September 8, 2008, 4:22 am 4:22 am

All the pics and videos coming out of these conventions are looking more and more like fascism…. hmmm… why could that be? Perhaps, because it IS fascism…alive and well right here in the god blessed United States of America… god bless us all…

Posted by: Philo | September 8, 2008, 4:33 am 4:33 am

How it is the Republicans’ fault that the police brutality occurred? If this happened at the DNC, would it be the Democrats’ fault? It’s your right as Americans to protest, but NOT your right to damage property and endanger the well-being of innocent people in the streets.
Also, any comparisons between the USA today and the Nazi-regime under Hitler is plain ridiculous.
And yes, may God bless us all, and have mercy on us should Obama get into the White House. Hopefully enough voters stay away from the Kool-Aid to keep that from happening.
