Rove on Mayoral Experience

Fox News analyst Karl Rove — the predictor of the Reagan-esque landslide for George W. Bush in 2000 and the owner of "the math" showing the 2006 GOP congressional surge — had some interesting observations about Gov. Sarah Palin’s qualifications.

She was "Mayor of, I think, the second largest city in Alaska," Rove said of Palin’s time at the helm of Wasilla, Alaska, with a population under 9,000.

Watch HERE.

A few weeks ago, however, when Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine was being considered as Sen. Barack Obama’s running mate, Rove wasn’t as charitable when describing Richmond, Virginia, a city for which Kaine served as mayor, one 25 times bigger than Wasilla.

"He was mayor of the 105th largest city in America," Rove told CBS’s Face the Nation."It’s not a big town. So if he were to pick Governor Kaine it would be an intensely political choice, where he said, ‘You know what? I’m really not first and foremost concerned with "Is this personal capable of being president of the United States."’"

I stole this observation from this brilliant bit from The Daily Show.

Nobody gets to the heart of the matter better than Jon Stewart. He was absolutely spot on this week!

Posted by: mila | September 5, 2008, 10:18 am 10:18 am

That clip alone demolishes almost every talking point the Republicans have pushed in the last few months.
What’s more sad, though, is that Jon Stewart is going a better job at telling truth to power than the MSM is.

Now the RNC is over. Can Palin step up to answer questions about her links to Alaskan separatists, trooper gate, lying about bridge to nowhere and trying to impose conservative values on her mayooral town?
America needs answers.

As mayor, Palin probably made more decisions than Obama made in Congress.
Obama voted present 130 times–130 times the decisions were too tough for him. And these were not split second decisions–he listened to speeches, had time to think. But he still took the easy way out.
Kind of like when he was asked when a baby gets rights—”That’s above my pay grade”.
No wonder he needs 300 advisors.

Posted by: agreed | September 5, 2008, 10:33 am 10:33 am

Jon Stewart is just a comedian and anything he says must be viewed through that lens. But when he lets the partisans hang themselves with their own words, it’s hard to see how anyone would put much trust in their words from here on out. Odd how liberal commentators rarely get caught in such blatant reversing of positions to pander to their candidates.

Posted by: Joe | September 5, 2008, 10:33 am 10:33 am

harry: “Obama voted present 130 times”
130 times out of over 4,000 votes. Many of those were at the request of party leadership as part of a well known strategy (if you vote present it provides cover for opposition politicans to take a vote away from a photogenic but bad law by also voting present). I suppose you admire John McCain’s approach instead – simply missing hundreds (thousands over his long career I wager) of votes. I guess it’s coincidence that McCain has missed the last 8 votes on energy, allowing support of renewable development to lapse (don’t worry – oil company tax breaks and subsidies are still going strong).
Voting present on a very very small number of votes is taking more of a stand than McCain’s favored trick of just not showing up.

Sure, Sarah Palin made decisions as mayor. She made a decision to hire a lobbyist to go after federal earmarks. She made a decision to support the “bridge to nowhere.” She made the decision to fire the police chief for political reasons, and she made the decision to try to ban library books.

Posted by: Dee Dee Lynn | September 5, 2008, 10:37 am 10:37 am

Second largest cityin Alaska? NOT EVEN CLOSE! Fairbanks, Juno, Ankorage off the top of my head and I’m sure there’s many more.
It’s hilarious watching the GOP insiders like Rove eating their own words while tring to justify McCain’s VP choice.
Though we know McCain wanted LIBERMAN, not Palin – so we can’t put all the blame on McCain.
But it does pose the question: WHO IS ACTUALLY RUNNING THE REPUBLICAN PARTY? Who would actually be running our country if McCain were elected?

Posted by: Eat your words ROVE! | September 5, 2008, 10:39 am 10:39 am

Woodward quotes McCain in his upcoming book about Bush: “everything is ****ing spin”. Gee, I wonder where the spin came from? Rove’s a guy who does it all with straight face…He’s going to say/do everything possible to keep the Dems from winning the Whitehouse because he’s looking at a federal indictment if he fails.

I believe in an experience threshold but once a candidate passes it, more or less experience of whatever kind is unlikely to matter much.
I think Obama, with his more than a decade of legislative experiences, has passed it.
We need look no further than the two Bushes. Bush Sr. was a seasoned Washington politician and W was a Texas governor before they became presidents. Bush Sr.’s single term was unimpressive, to say the least, and more and more people are describing W’s performance as a “disaster”.

Stewart made Rove look like an ###. A good lawyer will use someone’s own words against them. Good thing it’s just the Republicans who fall into that trap, right? They’re such hypocrites! Good thing Joe (he’s not ready to be President yet) Biden never said anything (he’s a clean, articulate, African-American) that could be used against him (plagiarism). Or Hillary. Or anyone in public life for that matter.

First of all, the alleged 130 “present” votes were in the Illinois legislature, not the U.S. Senate. Secondly, the Republican who first brought up that accusation against Obama voted present more than 100 times himself.

Posted by: jock59801 | September 5, 2008, 10:54 am 10:54 am

Was Rove lying? Is that the slander you mean? I believe the real problem for the Republicans is found in that line from: “A Few Good Men” – you can’t handle the truth.

Posted by: nh bob | September 5, 2008, 10:54 am 10:54 am

slander (noun): a malicious, false, and defamatory statement or report
Can you offer a single example of slander against Palin? All of the criticism I have heard come from legitimate news sources has been entirely factually based. If it’s true, it’s not slander. Yet the McCain campaign considers asking relevant, pertinant follow up questions “slander.”
For example, McCain has pulled an interview for questions “over the line” like ‘name one decision that (Governor Palin) made as commander-in-chief of the Alaskan National Guard,’ following up on an apparently hollow talking point offered by the McCain campaign. Sorry – doesn’t matter how much you rant, questions like that are hardly slander.

The second largest city in Alaska is obviously more important than the 105th largest city in America.
But let me understand.
If Palin was mayor of the second largest city in Alaska, a veritible megalopolis, does this mean that she does not represent “small town” America after all?
(If I was the RNC, I would go with the small town angle.)
I am just speculating here, but ever since they let Rove out of that dark dank place he resided for years of Bush service andput him on Fox, it seems like he has kind of lost it.

Yes.
Just yesterday Soledad O’Brien (CNN) reported that Palin, far from being the “friend” of special needs parents she claimed to be in her speech, slashed special needs spending by 62%.
Not so. During her tenure special needs funding has not significantly DECREASED, instead, effective 2011, Palin has INCREASED it from the current level of $26,000 per student to $73,00.

Jon Stewart seems to be the only guy out there hoisting people with their own petards – why is a comedian doing this? Why isn’t the press stepping up and saying “Well Ms. Palin, on x date you said those who complain about gender were…..” and then see if she’d be able to wiggle her way out of it. Or saying “Mr. Obama, you’ve said your plan….” and see if he can answer the question.
I don’t care if we have a Fox News, and a MSNBC. But we have to have *real* news networks in the middle. Someone has got to take the initiative. Murrow considered reporting a moral imperative. Now it just seems to be all about the ratings.
If just *one* reporter steps up – then the spin machine will stop on both sides. Because they won’t be getting away with things anymore.
Until then – it’s Jon Stewart. I don’t know what we’d do without him.

All Palin has to do is read speeches written by Bush’s team.

Read your Bible: Jesus is the Son of God.
Obama is not. Comparisons like that are what turn the Christians against Obama. Keep that up and you’ll see posters declaring him the Anti-Christ and the Beast all over the streets. It’s already being said. Keep giving them reasons to say it louder.
Basing a candidacy on symbolism when we have an economic crisis, a war to fight, a collapsing education system, and so on is narcissism at its worst.

Answer:
End of his presidency bid.
This country is soo full of hypocrisy and racism only time will tell if we have grown. Any fool can see that it’s the Republicans who have the visciousness and hate.war mongering. Obama has led by example… up till now the man has NOT attacked personally like the repubs… Objectivity is lost in this country… The MSM follows ratings and people who should know better all sell out. who’s gonna suffer, the next generation. This election is a loser no matter who “wins”. The ignorance and bitterness of both sides of bloggers such as we see here really proves that their votes will be insignificant. The whole country loses because there are no honorable or honest candidates and there is no evidence of ethics coming from the public or the parties. This is a valid example of the media attacking Palin, but I don’t think it rises to the definition of slander. The fact is that the “special education budget” was indeed cut significantly, but digging into the details found that was primarily due to some odd accounting that assigned one-time infrastructures into the special ed line, resulting in a lump that naturally dropped (coincidently while Palin was governor). We can differ in opinion, but I don’t think this error was offered maliciously, I honestly believe the reporter misunderstood the accounting. Have they been repeating it since the details of the situation came out? The below summarizes the true situation regarding her funding (to date) of special education:
“…the AYCA probably shouldn’t be included in assessing special ed. funding. Without counting the AYCA program (which funding was raised), the special ed. funding was cut by about 1%.”
(Which is indeed an insignificant change as you stated.)

The mention of Jesus being a community organizer it not to compare Obama with Jesus, but to point out that people all over this country pitch-in and colunteer their time to make their community better. I am one. And for the Republican Party to spend an entire evening slamming our efforts is the most disturbing thing I have ever seen. Especially since the theme of the Repub Convention was “Service”.
WE are the one’s who are the scene with the first responders helping the family who lost their home to fire, or delivering meals on meals to the elderly, sheparding them to their appointments when their own families are too busy to help.
So when the Repubs attempt to make US feel bad about the good we try to do everyday in our own communities, it helps to remember that Jesus was a community organizer, so was Mother Teresea, and Ghandi and The Dhali Lama. Those references just reinforces that WE are right and they are WRONG!!

Preaching apathy and self-pity. A pretty pathetic position. If you actually cared, you would start doing something. Ever attend a city council meeting? Support the work of a public lobbying group (ACLU, NRA – there’s quite a band to chose from)? Become a delegate (easier than you think)?

A community volunteer does not go around and brag nor boast or use that about themselves if they are truly sincere from where I come from. Many many people volunteer to help others and they ask for no fame. He was getting people out to vote for his party. His party made a big do about him over this. He belongs to a radical black liberation church and volunteers as a community organizer..hummm. They were not referring to volunteering in a sincere way.

Christie, Palin and McCain just spent the last week viloolating the 9th commandment as per the Matthew 25 Network. The Ends do nont justify the MEANS as a christian.
Governor Palin, Put Away Falsehood
As Americans and people of faith from around the country, we were extremely disappointed in Sarah Palin’s divisive, sarcastic, and often deceptive address last night at the Republican National Convention. We call on her not only as a political figure, but also as a prominent Christian, to recommit herself to campaigning in good faith, with a strong commitment to truth-telling.
As Christians, we are called to be respectful and loving toward our neighbors, honoring their intentions even if we disagree with their plans. We are also called to “put away falsehood” (Eph 4:25) and to refrain from slandering, belittling, or speaking out of contempt for anyone.
If these are the standards God has set for us in our personal lives, our church communities, and our neighborhoods, how much more so should they be the standards of those Christians who choose to be in the public eye? Shouldn’t we also expect our brothers and sisters in politics to speak the truth in love and to extend respect and goodwill even to those with whom they disagree?
Sarah Palin has shaped much of her life around her Christian faith [1]. Indeed, it has been continually suggested that one of the major reasons John McCain chose Palin as his running-mate was her Christian faith and her ability to energize evangelical Christian voters. Thus, it is no stretch to say that Palin has suddenly become one of the most visible faces of Christianity in today’s political scene.
As such, we believe she has a calling even higher than her responsibility to her party’s victory in November – a calling to represent Jesus to the rest of the world. This is why her speech at the Republican National Convention last night was so disappointing to us at the Matthew 25 Network.
In questioning not only Senator Obama’s policies but also his motivations, and mocking his career, Palin went far beyond what could be considered acceptable disagreement and into what seemed like open contempt for a political opponent.
To be blunt, we saw very little of Jesus’ love in Sarah Palin’s speech last night, as she heaped contempt on those who disagree with her politically, while offering no vision for how to resolve the critical issues facing Americans today like job loss, health care, growing child poverty rates and the war in Iraq.
Moreover, as has been documented by major media sources including the Associated Press [2], Palin spoke falsehoods not only about her own record, but about Barack Obama’s record as a State Senator and as a U.S. Senator. As Christians, we are called throughout Scripture to speak the whole truth, to put away falsehood, to bear true witness even when it hurts our own interests. The name of Jesus should never be associated with falsehoods or deception, but last night, in Sarah Palin’s speech, we believe it was.
Therefore, we in the Matthew 25 Network call on Gov. Palin to repudiate her attitude of contempt towards her political opponents and to tell the whole truth, not only for the sake of a more honorable politics, but also for the sake of our Christian witness in the world.
Senator McCain is no less responsible because he selected Gov. Palin and praised her speech, and he claims to be a Christian as well. It is ill-fitting to use Christian identity and language for one’s political advantage without seeking to live up to that high calling. Ultimately, as the Presidential candidate, Governor Palin’s tone and infidelity to truth reflect negatively on Senator McCain as well.

ABC and other news media are so occupied with Palin’s religous views, her daughter, her small town. Why are you reporting her reform in Alaska? Show some journalism decency.
Also, there is a book out about Sarah, that I think people will get correct information from there not from NYT, WaPo, and the cable news.

what is wrong with Palin’s education? I have many friends in Oregon who are just un-traditional and went to several schools before graduating. What is more disturbing?
using drugs to battle self-struggle or, moving from schools to figure out academic interests?
I have no seen any reports on Obama’s school record. How about Biden’s school record?– his plagiarism record is still in Syracuse university law school. Anybody talking about that?
The more the media is digging with those irrelevant private info, the more people will be turned off. My friends are no longer reading the newspaper for information.

Christie: “A community volunteer does not go around and brag nor boast or use that about themselves if they are truly sincere from where I come from… He was getting people out to vote for his party.”
I know many people who are proud of their work in the community and talk about it in an effort to encourage others to also participate. By your metric, my Priest is quite the arrogant blowhard trying to get people involved in helping the needy – how dare he lead by example!
It also seems a bit disingenuous to disparage a candidate for including his community work on his resume – would you prefer he not discuss it at all? In that case, people might start spreading lies – as you are doing when you say that he was just “getting people out to vote for his party.” His work included: “helping set up a job training program, a college preparatory tutoring program, and a tenants’ rights organization in Altgeld Gardens.”
But perhaps he did all that two decades ago just to get ready for his presidential run in 2008.

The far left is trying to convince Middle America that their values are shared. GIVE US A BREAK! Anyone notice how the degrading Rap industry has lost a lot of influence since the Republicans have been in power? I think that is a very attractive fact for MOST Americans. Or the entertainment industry that brough us Pulp Fiction pop culture influence, also deminished. It all depends, what side of America do you want to have your children influenced by?

you’are right let’s shrink from contrasting Obama’s Stanford undergrad degree and Harvard post graduate record (not to mention editor of Harvard Law Review) against Palin’s 6 university (no extracurricular activity) journalism degree, that would be sexist.

amy: “I have no seen any reports on Obama’s school record.”
That reflects on your own ignorance, not the media. His time in private schools in Jakarta was heavily reported and researched, particularly as it clearly called out Foxnews as pushing false partisan slander.
His path from a community college, up to Columbia, and ultimately to graduating magna cum laude from Harvard is very well known, and the way he improved himself through clear merit and intelligence is admired by the well-educated portion of his base (who think accusations of “elitism” because he is smart make the accusers look like idiots who apparently want an intellectually slow president).

Bob, no one is perfect. NO ONE but when you have a man who was brought up with the teachings of a radical church and has unusual feelings of wearing the American flag pin and will not say the pledge of alliance and supported a state law to not have a doctor in the hospital for a baby being born alive that’s not no where in God’s platform.

Posted by: SOWHAT! | September 5, 2008, 12:21 pm 12:21 pm

Christie, noone is claiming perfection but outright mistruths (lies) are quite evident in Palin’s and McCain’ rhetoric. Obama has demonstrated compassion when he could’ve sprang to big money and Wallstreet. Meanwhile, I see no evidence of an altruistic bone in the GOP ticket whatsoever.

Posted by: Bob | September 5, 2008, 12:22 pm 12:22 pm

People think getting a Ivy league degree makes a person inherently superior than those who did not — this is exactly democrats are loosing for this year. Harvard education does not make a good leader — it only trains you to think about things in a particular way that those professors like.
the polls already show McCain-Palin convention bounce of 5 to 7 points now. Wait when Palin travels to the small towns and connect with people.
This year should have been a dem year, but the democrats have selected a person who is least likely to win the other half of the America.
the bottom line is trust – who do you think can really deliver. I trust McCain -Palin, not Obama-Biden.

It’s up to the voters to decide whether they believe, Obama or McCain represents most of their values. Obama has pushed forth his values with his arguments and attacks. What America now knows is this. We do not want to be racist, McCain is not a racist nor does he focus on race; Obama does. America does not want to be sexist; Obama’s support has flung the most sexist attacks on women since the mid sixties; you know, the last cultural revolution. McCain has been accused of pandering to women; Well that is definitely something Obama does NOT do though he caters to the RACE factor. McCain is against abortion, pro sex education. Obama is Pro abortion and pro sex education. The difference here, is the value of life. Which does America prefer?

Teaching one abstinence, is sex education. It works and has been proven to work. Yes, there are failures just as there are numerous failures in sex ed and contraception. Most abortions do not occur because of rape or incest. Most occur because of carelessness, even though contraception was available. Those are facts that America needs to face. Abortion is being used as contraception. If a young woman knew her fate would ultimately be pregnancy, she would be more careful. Churches who promote abstinence, have a higher degree of success among their youth, than the sex ed products in our society. Argue your true values, but face the reality.

It’s easy to get (family values or just being there for one another as a family). It was very wrong to put down the daughter as the left and the media are doing. They even ask for dna for the little newborn on some kooky blogs and those people ran with that vile. Yes, as a voter, spectator and Republican Karl Rove prefers Palin over Obama. He therefore speaks to his reasons. Oprah, too as a voter, spectator, Democrat? promoted Obama when most of America didn’t know who he was. People of fame vote too. Your point? We had Obama prance out as though he were one of the Beatles, to be adored from a distance and to be available solely to his newly acquired (a la Oprah) celebrity fame. QUESTION – Do Republicans care??
John McCain and President Bush recent statments – feel economy stable or shows some improvement
ANSWER: No!!! Never even addressed economy at National Convention!! Whole convention more geared towards no mention of issue – more attention to John McCain’s war record and his experience. AND MEDIA ATTENTION ON SARAH PALIN, KARL ROVE DID THIS FOUR YEARS AGO TO TAKE NEWS OFF BUSH.
COMMUNITY FUNDRAISERS
John McCain and Sarah Palin have made statement at convention and again today.
They feel and state common prople are nothing and do nothing. Sarah shame on you!!!!! YOU ARE NOW “THE ELITE” since you are Vice Presidential Candidate!!
BIG PITCH – REGULAR COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS WHO HELP PEOPLE OR ASSIST THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES DON’T DO ANYTHING!! COMMUNITY ORGANIZERS HAVE NO RESPONSIBILITY NOR DO THEY SHOW LEADERSHIP SKILLS.
I know exactly what these two think!!! Sarah is new – all has gone to her head – “TOO GOOD NOW FOR REGULAR PEOPLE” And she slams us!! Sarah Palin is now the new “ELITIST” who joined John McCain the old “ELITIST” who can’t even remember how many houses he owns.
From a 63 yo white college educated medical professional woman who is registered Republican!! Widowed with two adult married children. I am so disappointed. How dare these two and Republican Party say this about us at the grassroots level!! And your lack of interest in/for the average person. Neither of you mentioned anything about economy at convention!! You don’t care!! Both I have found care about more about oil and corporations interests!!
EVERYONE – YES I HAVE A RIGHT TO CRITICIZE SARAH PALIN WITHOUT CLAIMS OF BEING “SEXIST.” THESE ARE ISSUES, NOT GENDER RELATED! AND I AM A WOMAN! NATION HAS MAJPOR PROBLEMS! THESE TWO INSULTED/ARE NOT OUT TO HELP AVERAGE AMERICANS!!

Does McCain really think they only have to put some lipstick on their failed policies?
And that’s change?
Cartoonists will have a field day with that. I expect to see lots of Old and Tired Elephants in drag with lipstick and high heels.
People will soon realize that underneath that drag, there’s still that elephant

Did everybody notice that the RNC used a fake funeral with actors this week in one of their videos?
Republicans can’t deal with realities.

SOWHAT: Actually, Troopergate is a credible ethics investigation into whether she used her position to have her ex-brother-in-law fired.
Rumors about her daughter, I agree, should be off limits but if she is going to parade her daughter and the hockey papa in the media, which they have done, then it’s safe to say that it should be fair game.
As for her ability to be VP when she has a special needs infant, I think that’s a very viable concern. It was enough of a concern for Republicans when John Edwards put his campaign ahead of his wife’s cancer in 2004.
In the end, we’re not going to change each others minds but you do have to stop blaming the media. The media is not the problem. It’s the 8 years of the Bush administration as well as the 6 years of Republican rule that are the problem.

Sarah Palin stop avoiding the questions you are not above anyone. The American people have a right to known your positions.

You live in San Francisco?

I think we all know Karl said prior to the November, 2006 that he, and he alone, had access to the “real” math and Republicans would win.
Wasilla is the “second largest city in Alaska.” Richmond “is not that big a town.” So I guess you could say of Fox and Newsweek, their decision to choose Karl Rove means they were not that concerned about accurately informing their viewers and readers.

megan – you asked that of someone that has been on a ticket for 1 day shouldn’t you be asking
Barack Hussein Obama stop avoiding the questions you are not above anyone. The American people have a right to known your positions.
jhw539 – sorry to burst you bubble but he was only present 186 times, and out of that he voted present 130 times
and one of the votes he did was against saving babies lives because it would be an inconvenience!

So Karl Rove is touting the experience of big old Wasilla and running down little ole Richmond? Sounds like a fool that would lose his own e-mails to me.

spock,
Yeah the same way that Gulliani dismissed McCains 95% Bush voting record as mostly on irrelevant procedural issues.
Which way do you want to have it?

Stewart is not making fun of Rove here, he’s making fun of the press that lets him get away with stuff like this.

Bob, the point of Palin’s line on the bridge is not did she support it or not, but that she somehow stood up to congress. The press keeps asking ‘did she support it?’ instead of ‘did she stand up to congress?’. She’s trying to build her cred as gutsy, and the press is acting like they dont understand the whole point. The fact is she never said anything to congress, the entire story is an out-and-out fabrication, and they let her get away with it by pretending they dont get the real point of the whole thing.

When did the truth ever get between the Republican party and voters? Like weapons of mass destruction, the outing of Valerie Plume, and the pillage of the Justice Department under Alberto Gonzales, the truth never really seems to matter. It’s all about spin and winning the next election. Leadership? Well, they always point to Ronald Reagan for that, a man who raised taxes 6 times as President and signed a very liberal abortion rights bill as Governor of California.
