Rove: Palin Could Be Worth Three Points for McCain
ABC News’ Teddy Davis Reports: Former Bush strategist Karl Rove said Thursday that Sarah Palin could boost John McCain against Barack Obama even though academic research shows that vice presidential picks usually don’t matter.
"I’ve touched base with a couple of political science professors, and they say, ‘Look, vice presidential running mates typically have a small impact on the outcome.’ In fact, one analysis shows less than one percent up or down," said Rove. "Sarah Palin has a chance to take that one percent and take it to a two or three percent impact and in a close election that may make a difference."
Rove thinks Palin could make the difference in a tight contest because of her potential appeal to suburban, independent women and small-town Hillary Clinton voters.
"Taking on Alaska’s good-old-boy politics and beating the incumbent Republican governor might be seen as evidence of the political courage and independence voters are looking for this year," Rove wrote in Thursday’s Wall Street Journal. "And with women more undecided than men, Mrs. Palin could add more than a point to Mr. McCain’s total — maybe two or three – which could make the difference in a close contest."
The former Bush strategist and Fox News commentator who has offered some advice to McCain’s 2008 campaign pointed to Colorado as one state where Palin could make a difference. Rove said that in order for Democrats to flip the state, they have to make inroads among rural voters and do well in suburban counties.
"I suspect that Sarah Palin is going to limit their upward mobility with suburban soft Republicans and independent women," said Rove. "So this may be the one election in which the vice presidential nominee has an important impact."
"But let’s not overstate it," he continued. "It’s going to be two or three percent and the whole drama is going to depend on the presidential candidates and if they’re close then she may help push it across."
Rove ended his comments about Palin at Thursday’s Politico-Yahoo "convention conversation" in St. Paul, Minn., by mocking the media for framing its Palin coverage around the question: "Can she do it?"
"Let me say one final thing. She had a test last Friday and she passed it with flying colors," said Rove, referring to last week’s V.P. announcement. "She had a test last night. But being the newest player on the stage she will also be the most tested and will be the most judged on the stage."
"Now," said Rove, "we’re going to be hearing about: ‘When is she going to appear on a Sunday talk program?’ And: ‘When is she going to do an interview?’ And: ‘When is she going to give an unscripted speech?’ And: ‘When is she going to give a town-hall meeting?’ And: ‘When is she going to answer questions on foreign policy?’ And: ‘How is she going to perform in the debate?’"
"We’re going to hear more of these questions of performance throughout the next several weeks about her than we hear about any of the other three candidates and more than we’ve heard in recent elections about any candidate," said Rove. "[T]he compressed time frame and [her] freshness and newness on the scene are going to require people . . . in the media [to say]: ‘How do we make this as an easy storyline?’
"And the easy storyline is: ‘Can she do it?’" said Rove. "Like they did last night. The breathless: ‘Can she walk out there, in those high-heels, and deliver a speech. Well, fine."
David Wade, the former spokesman to John Kerry who is now press secretary to Obama running mate Joe Biden, dismissed Rove’s comments about the effect that Palin could have on the race.
"Good to see the stress of potential jail time hasn’t cost Karl his sense of humor," said Wade. "Oh, Karl. He’s a stitch of yesterday. I think of an old calendar and I think of Karl’s face on it."

A poll driven speech written by Schmidt and Rove delivered by their newest student Gov. Sarah Palin at the Republican convention.
Her attack with a smile means more negative ads.
Schimidt and Rove can’t spin a extreme-conservative on the issues into a moderate.
She will attempt to draw the Democrats into the mud and fight.
What is disturbing is the attacks on the media. We count on the media to ask the questions we can’t ask
but we want to know about.
The Republican tactics against the media are McCarthyism.
This is a Democracy!

Actually, Sarah Palin is worth a lot more.
The DemocRATS are so afraid after hearing her speak at the convention, they coughed up over $10 million in one day.
The Pied Piper of Chicago played his tune to the DemocRATS, and they followed him all the way to the bank to cough up cash for the great Obama.
And we all thought the Republicans were the party of the rich.
Glad I am an independent and don’t dance to the Obama tune.

Rove? What a joke. Just a few weeks ago he said that being Gov of Virginia and mayor of Richmond was hardly enough experience to be a reasonable candidate — and if obama had picked him as a running mate it would have been purely political and not in the best interest of the country.
Rove is simply a liar — and pretty much the most evil human being alive too. He engineered the horrid smear of McCain back in 2000. Now he loves McCain because, well, that’s politics.
This is just more of the same-old-same-old politics.
In 2000 Bush said that McCain had been in washington too long and was too much of washington as usual. He was right then…

Jenni,
You can thank George W. Bush for the fact that you don’t think of a terrorist attack every day. People in many other countries aren’t so fortunate.
How do you account for nearly 11,800 deadly terrorist attacks committed around the world since 9/11 and not a single one here? In the most open society on the planet?
The boldness of Democratic leadership and policies?
Please.
The irrational hate of all things Bush has clouded people’s thinking.
For all his faults, Bush has done a remarkable job protecting us from homeland terror. He deserves our thanks for that at least.
I’m confident McCain will instinctively do the right thing to protect the homeland.
With Obama, it’s anyone’s guess what he’d do under that kind of pressure. Would he lose his head? Would he defer his decisions to his VP due to his inexperience? Would he form a focus group to see what decision polls best? We simply don’t know. He’s untested.
Confidence that our leaders will make the right decisions in crisis situations MATTERS. Our lives might depend on it.

But rest assured, a LOT of voters have moved McCain’s way, and rightfully so. Palin is exactly the breath of fresh air America has been waiting for, and she’s an absolute danger to the left. SARAH PALIN IS A FAKER…SO PLEASE, DON’T MISTAKE HER !!!
•PALIN: “[Obama] is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting, and never use the word ‘victory’ except when he’s talking about his own campaign.”
FACT: On July 15, in a speech in Washington, D.C., Obama twice used the word “victory” in reference to Iraq.
“In fact,” he said, “true success in Iraq — victory in Iraq — will not take place in a surrender ceremony where an enemy lays down their arms. … I want Iraqis to take responsibility for their own future, and to reach the political accommodation necessary for long-term stability. That’s victory. That’s success. That’s what’s best for Iraq, that’s what’s best for America, and that’s why I will end this war as president.
————————–
A week later in Berlin, Germany, on July 23, Obama used the word “victory” three times to describe Allied successes during World War II. And in a June speech about the prospect of universal health care, he said Sen. Hillary Clinton “will be central to that victory.”
———————-
•PALIN: “There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform — not even in the state senate.”
———————–
FACT: The meaning of “major” is open to debate, but Obama worked with Republicans, including Sen. Richard Luger of Indiana, to pass legislation that would expand efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to destroy conventional weapons stockpiles.
While a state senator in Illinois, he sponsored two contentious bills, one that studied racial profiling by police and another that ordered interrogations in potential death penalty cases to be recorded.
———————–
•PALIN: “I fought to bring about the largest private-sector infrastructure project in North American history. And when that deal was struck, we began a nearly $40 billion natural gas pipeline to help lead America to energy independence.
That pipeline, when the last section is laid and its valves are opened, will lead America one step farther away from dependence on dangerous foreign powers that do not have our interests at heart.”
————————–
FACT: That infrastructure project has not yet been approved by federal regulators. The proposed pipeline would ship natural gas from the Alaska’s North Slope to homes and businesses across the United States. In June, the Alaskan legislature, with Palin’s prodding, agreed to pay Canadian energy company TransCanada $500 million as an incentive to build the pipeline.
——————-
•PALIN: “And I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending: nearly half a billion dollars in vetoes. I suspended the state fuel tax and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress ‘thanks, but no thanks,’ for that Bridge to Nowhere.”
—————–
FACT: While serving as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, Palin hired Steven Silver, a former chief of staff for Sen. Ted Stevens, to lobby Congress for earmarks. Wasilla received around $27 million in federal money, about as much as Boise, Idaho. Boise has a population of 200,000 people, compared with Wasilla’s 10,000. Earmarked funds went to sewage improvements and improving roads connecting the town to a local ski resort.
——————-
As for the Bridge to Nowhere, Palin initially supported using federal funds to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to Gravina Island, which has 50 residents and a small airport.
It was not until the plan was ridiculed that she withdrew her support. Critics contend she still supports using federal money to build a 3.4 mile Road to Nowhere on the island for $26 million — from the funds for the bridge.
————————-
•PALIN: While I was at it, I got rid of a few things in the governor’s office that I didn’t believe our citizens should have to pay for. That luxury jet was over the top. I put it on eBay. I also drive myself to work.
—————–
FACT: Soon after entering office, Palin put the state-owned Westwind II jet that her predecessor Frank Murkowski purchased amid much criticism. When the deal fell through with the sole eBay bidder, the plane was sold offline.
Alaskan businessman Larry Reynolds paid $2.1 million for the jet after learning about it from Republican John L. Harris, speaker of the Alaskan House of Representatives.
Palin, as she said, drives herself to work. In July, her Chevy Suburban was rear-ended while driving from Wasilla to her office in downtown Anchorage.

Gotta watch Jon Stewart on Sept.3 where he’s spliced the two schizoid Karl Roves: one praising the remarkably experienced Gov.Palin for being ‘mayor of…the 2nd largest city in Alaska’
(9000 people…bwahahaha), another belittling Obama’s early potential VP pick, Gov. Tom Kaine, for being mayor of the 105th largest US city (200000 people in a metropolitan area of more than a million). 100% spin, 0% integrity. And boy are most of us tired of that…including surely John McCain, but a vote for McCain is a vote for another 4 years of Republican slime tactics in power.
When President Bush addressed the RNC and compared the ‘angry left’ to the Hanoi Hilton jailors (again, no sense of shame), he ignored the much larger ‘angry middle’. Even people like me (i.e., ones with actual lives, ones that have tolerated the exceptionally high level of lying and bullying under Bush, etc.) are writing posts and we’ll be voting. So, Republican mass-mailers, ideologues, professional insulters and incompetents – all the lies and spin: bring it on. Keep on mobilizing reasonable people to vote the Republican bums out.

John McCain’s running mate Sarah Palin was in an Alaskan independence party
Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential candidate, was once a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, its officials have said.
By Jon Swaine
Last Updated: 3:46PM BST 02 Sep 2008
News of Mrs Palin’s former membership comes as the latest in a string of potentially embarrassing disclosures about her past.
The party has lobbied since the 1970s for the right to hold a referendum on whether Alaska should secede from the United States. Its motto, “Alaska First”, Contrasts sharply with the John McCain campaign slogan: “Country First.”
——————————-
BIG NOTE: It seeks “the complete Repatriation of the public lands, held by the federal government, to the state and people of Alaska” and aims to be “self-sufficient” by using profits from Alaskan OIL and GAS RESOURCES. It claims that the vote held in 1958 which led to Alaska becoming the 49th state of the US was CORRUPT and did not offer a PROPER CHOICE.
————————————-
While it is thought that Mrs Palin officially left the party to become a Republican in 1996, she recorded an address for its convention earlier this year in which she said: “I share your party’s vision of upholding the constitution of our great state” and told members to “keep up the good work”.
Lynette Clark, the chairman of the Alaskan Independence Party (AIP), confirmed to ABC News that Mrs Palin and her husband Todd had both been both members and attended at least one party convention.
———————————
“When she joined the party our platform was right under her nose,” Mrs Clark said. “I can’t understand why in God’s name she has aligned herself with a candidate who opposes the development of our republic and Alaska’s resource wealth,” she added.
——————————
BIG NOTE: In a video recorded at this year’s party convention, Dexter Clark, the party’s vice chairman, can be seen telling delegates: “The situation is completely out of hand, the decay of the federal government is totally complete.”
————————————–
BIGGEST NOTE: He tells them that in order to propagate AIP policy they “should infiltrate” mainstream parties. “Whichever party in that area [in which] you can get something done, get into that Political Party, even though it does have its problems,” he says.
——————————–
The latest disclosure is likely to add to concerns among some Republicans that Mrs Palin was not adequately vetted before being asked to become Mr McCain’s vice-presidential candidate

Mmmmh, time for a coffee break, let’s see, oh look, a response to my post… from LarryMan…ok…’spell his name right?’…’4th grade’…’Iraq…listen to democrat rants’…
so that would be 5th grade level schoolyard sarcasm (must not be a regular Jon Stewart viewer),followed by a defensive reference to Bush lying about Iraq (why’d he pick that, there’s so much else to choose from? And it’s a tough call, does Iraq get filed under ‘lying’ or under ‘incompetence’; decisions, decisions), followed by blaming Bush’s Iraq invasion policy on ‘listening to Democrats’ (hadn’t heard that one before), followed by the implication that President Clinton didn’t have gonads (confusing, given how much time and money the Republicans spent in obsessing over his excessive gonad-driven behavior, thus distracting Clinton and us all re Al Quaeda), followed by a cheer for Gov.Palin (Larry…is that her husbands name? otherwise, what does he know after one whole week that the rest of us doesn’t?)…oops, back to work

libertyjustice, I guess my words were intended for you, since your post is so elementary. Try putting some spaces in once in a while.
While you were still in your mother’s womb during the 90′s, Slick Willie actually BOMBED Iraq. Yes he did, look it up in your online encyclopedia. But he did while the impeachment hearings were going on. Coincidence?? You tell me.
With the leadup to Iraq, EVERY democrat stood up and said “Saddam has NUKES, he must go”. You could look it up but it’s been stricken from the records by Obammabots.
When Bush won election by a landslide in 2004, democrats had to turn the country against him. They did a fantastic job.
When the economy boomed for 6 years, until the democrats got back in power, Peelosi and Reid had to do something. The oil prices spiked, gas exploded, and it caused fuel, food, to escalate, job losses. THAT IS THE NUMBER ONE ISSUE IN THIS COUNTRY, GAS PRICES.
Until democrats allow us to increase OUR supply, the cost of gas, the economy, will be in trouble.
Simple enough for some of you? I doubt it.

Fair enough. She might be worth 3 point. Or she might be worth -5, especially if:
- independents find her social views too radical
- independents find her campaign style too negative
- the on-going investigation in Alaska shows she did abuse her authority
- people start to ask more questions about her involvement with an Alaskan secessionist party
- more comes out about fired librarians, etc
Posted by: Paul | September 5, 2008, 3:14 pm 3:14 pm
To Paul: Many librarians need to be fired, particularly the ones that protect pedophiles that watch child porn on a library computers. The stuff about the secessionist party has been refuted. And the crap about independents. There are no such. Reagan was elected twice by massive landslides. Most Americans are conservatives and she has energized them. Stop doing the professional blogging as a paid operative of Obama.
Face it, If Obama was so great he would be 15 points ahead. He isn’t because people are figuring out that he is

phony
liar
marxist
a disaster to our country if elected
As far as Palin is concerned – Chris Matthews (hardly a right-conservative) said that he feels he has seen a future President of the United States.

As a young suburban mother, there is NO way in the world would I vote for McCain after that wack job he picked for a VP running mate. He had my vote till that woman spoke, she gives me the creeps. She strikes me as an opportunist, parading her family as if she did a bang up job raising them.
1.Against sex ed–>pregnant teen. The parents of the boy, shame on you for allowing your son to be paraded as an object of family values.
2.Censorship
Read the Ankorage editorials to get the “inside” scoop on how Palin operates. She is a high school Queen bee that has never grown up.
Listen to her radio interview making fun of a rival of hers. Reminds me of my 13 year daughter’s catty friends at their best.
As much as I dislike Hilary, I would take her over this Palin disaster in a heartbeat.

Ohboy!!! Hey ohboy, if Sarah is such a disaster why are there 3 times more blogs here on her than Hairplug Joe???
Could it be that you Hitlery lovers can’t take it that another woman will be president before your beloved Hitlery.
Ankorage editorials? It couldn’t be that the majority of newspapers in this country are LIBERAL could it???
But then, I suppose she didn’t vote “Present” enough times to suit you.

Looks like John McBrilliant made the right choice.
It’s not surprising the Republican Convention got more viewers in three days than the Democratic Convention got in four!
I can’t wait to watch McCain debate Obambi; Obambi won’t have a teleprompter to read.
I’m also looking forward to watching Sarah Palin cream that windbag Biden in the debate!
Sarah Palin is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
WE ARE GOING TO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
McCAIN-PALIN ’08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Bush/McCain ticket will not win. It is another 4 years of the last 8 years. Who can trust a 10% chance that McCain will not vote with Bush after voting 90% with him. All of the same players on involved in the Bush/McCain ticket. Sara is just a distraction.

Why would any suburban, independent women who was a Hillary suporter want to vote for Palin? They have and stand for totally different issues. Or does Rove and the rest of the old republicans think we women are too dumb and only vote on gender? I am so tired of the games the republicans play. The assumption I would vote for Palin b/c she is a women is a slap in my face and I know longer have any respect for McCain; he has sold his soul to the devil.

I thought Rove was out of the picture. There’s a reason they address him as Bush’s FORMER strategist – he can’t fool the country a third time. He must think women are stupid to pull something like putting/wanting Palin on the ticket. The guy gets shallower everytime he opens his mouth..
