Rudy’s Red Meat
This was the full-frontal assault we’ve been waiting for. Rudy Giuliani maintains a remarkable popularity inside the Republican Party.
The sun is coming up over New York City behind him, but he is shading darkness over Barack Obama — slamming him for flip-flops, elitism, for having less executive experience than Sarah Palin.
On McCain: "Can you imagine how they’re going to shake up Washington?"
And dialing up the sexism argument: "How dare they question whether Sen. Palin has enough time to spend with her children and be vice president? How dare they do that?"
(Rudy, the family man?)

here’s a comparison of their experience, side by side.
980 – 1984: Him: Ivy League degree. Her: tiara
1985 – 1990: Him: sterling legal education. Her: sportscaster.
1991 – 1995: Him: Expert on our nation’s fundamental legal principles. Her: plotted to leave the Union; thinks Pledge of Allegiance was written by our founding fathers, doesn’t know what a Vice President does.
1996 – 2000: Him: sponsored 800 bills. Her: swayed 616 voters.
2001 – 2004: Him: demonstrated the wisdom to oppose the Iraq folly before it even began.
Her: hasn’t really though much about Iraq – despite the fact that 17 Alaskans have died there
2005 to present: Him: Impressive figure on the national stage who knows how Congress works and is engaged with foreign policy issues.
Her: small state governor for 21 months; “next to Russia”, but that is just 1 of the 190 countries in the world she has never been to.
Conclusion: the word “executive” is not some kind of magic force multiplier when placed in front of the word “experience”.
sure we can. after all, 0bama never claimed to be a governor. he IS, however, and excellent senator.

All of the speakers tonight are just coming off as shrill. One thing the Dems did particularly well was reach out beyond their base. This is counterproductive and McCain will regret the tone of this convention in November.

The one thing I kept hearing tonight was fear, fear, fear. I’m frackin’ tired of negativity and the idea that terrorists are out to get us. Remembering our history, we helped to create a lot of the countries that hate us. Despite that, we can’t afford to live in fear, that does us no good. It’s time to promote peace and alleviate poverty. That’s the real way to fight terrorism. One thing for sure, at least we know Gov. Palin can read the speech written for her. However, I won’t vote for her just because she’s a woman. I’m just tired of the fear mongering of the Republican Party that used to be so positive. That’s why I’ve left it. Don’t know how I’ll vote. I’m fed up.

More attack politics from the Right. Trying to scare voters into believing the big bad wolf is at the door. Rudy started it tonight with a horrible speech, and now Gov Palin wants us all to believe she is ready to lead in the event McCain is rendered incapacitated. Since I was a squad leader and had a sizeable number of soldiers under my command, I must have the executive experience to be Commander-In-Chief as well. And I am disabled from my combat wounds so the disabled will have a voice with me as well. This speech was pandering to the base at its finest. Read some of the first takes from non-partisan writers. These speeches tonight will leave alot of smiles in Chicago, for they have succeded in pushing away the moderates that John McCain so desperately needed.

It was really awkward going from Giulian’s hate speech straight into Palin. Giuliani was inappropriate and extremely partisan when people are desperate to come together. He literally made fun of our desire for hope and our desire for change. He ridiculed Obama’s entry-level job as a community organizer fresh out of college saying it amounted to having zero, nada, nothing responsibility. The crowd laughed. I don’t think taking on the “big Chicago machine” for basic rights of the most vulnerable people is funny. When people were dying from asbestos and lead poisoning, Chicago community organizers were there to resolve this issue and save countless lives. When the elderly were dying without the dignity of basic services, Obama was there. When voting rights were being taken away, community organizers were there. I don’t think saving people from dying is doing nothing, and I don’t think it’s something to make fun of. Sarah Palin’s speech is pointless rhetoric. We’ve learned nothing

I wonder if one of the social services Palin thinks we can do without is, for example, California Childrens Services? They saved my daughter’s life…providing complete surgical services and medical care for her brain tumor when her daddy was laid off his job. Instead, she lived and thrived, and is still alive today!

The only speaker tonight that even TRIED to work in the spirit of moving this nation forward was Huckabee of all people.
Yeah, there were a few cracks in the speech, but he started it out very eloquently.
Just sad. To think this is the party I voted for in 2000. What the hell happened. How can a Party that gives 250 million gallons of oil (just today) from our reserves to Citgo (venezuela) talk about being independent from Those Evil Ferrin Types. How can a Party that claims to want to get “smaller”, spend so much time tapping our phones, putting children on no-fly lists? How can a Party that claims to put the hard working american first, stand by as the dollar collapses in value, the big banks rip us off, and communities vanish?
But hey, at least they believe all life in the womb is sacred and to be protected. Well, at least until it comes out. Then we’re on our own.
Hypocrites.
Posted by: Gross | September 4, 2008, 12:26 am 12:26 am
Shrill is right and I don’t mean that literally. This evening showed that the party faithful even more than the speech writers hate Obama. The gleeful giddiness from St. Paul was disturbing. I expected more from McCain. The Republicans showed they were small and petty – personal attacks and statements that they can deliver “real change.” But what is that change – I have heard nothing. McCain if you really are going to change how Washington operates – what are you going to do!
“Drill Baby Drill” are you serious? That just continues the problem of dependence on oil. The problem is not that we can’t buy oil on the international market – the problem is that for almost 100 years we have built our society around a fuel that is ruining our Earth.
And don’t get me started on health care…
I am a former Reagan Republican, and I hate to see what has happened to my party.
Posted by: Phillip | September 4, 2008, 12:34 am 12:34 am
I’ll be honest, I tried to watch tonight. I’m a political science graduate student and I tried to give the Republicans the benefit of the doubt, but what I saw was appalling. Who would have thought that the sanest voices coming out of Minnesota this week would be Ron Paul and Jesse Ventura? Whether or not McCain wins, he and his Republican compatriots have set civil discourse in this country back at least 50 years and I can’t in good conscience view McCain as a credible or competent leader.
Posted by: Bob | September 4, 2008, 12:47 am 12:47 am
But Bob – seriously can America elect a Black man?
Civil discourse this ain’t, it is red meat for those who would rather hate than build a better America. Sad.
Posted by: Phillip | September 4, 2008, 12:53 am 12:53 am
Phillip, I fear greatly for the country if they can’t. For the all the words they used, all I could hear was “shrill, divisive, and disappointing”
Posted by: Bob | September 4, 2008, 1:28 am 1:28 am
What crap – I’m suprised Rudy is even allowed to be part of the Holy Rupublican Party – Palin is a vulgar individual. To think any woman would compare her to Hillary is an insult. I fully expected a moose to be dragged on to the stage and ripped apart by Palins bare teeth. My God the GOP speeches were mind numbing. I guess I watched out of morbid curiousity
Posted by: plh | September 4, 2008, 1:33 am 1:33 am
One other thing I’ve noticed this week that I haven’t heard anybody pick up on: With all the derision being directed toward the investigative media this week, does anybody in their right mind think that the media will EVER give a free pass to McCain, Palin, or any other Republican for the duration of this campaign?
Posted by: Bob | September 4, 2008, 1:43 am 1:43 am
I used to work at Shell Oil, the economically accesable oil in the world has already been tapped. Drill all you want, in 15 years its all gone. The sooner we develop energy alternatives to oil the less our pain will be in the future.
The republican base seems to be obsessed with themselves and their own needs and wealth. Lets stick our heads in the sand and blame everyone else for our problems and let our children deal with the fallout of our own greed.
Who has burdened this country with an enourmous foreign debt? Those who voted for the IRAQ war.
The military spending completely dominates our budget. Bills for healthcare and education get vetoed and bills for the military which are an order of magnitude larger go through. Penny wise and dollar foolish.
As a nation we become dumber and poorer and hateful, because we only invest in fear mongering.
So terribly sad.
Use your common sense.
A political party is not a religion, it is ok to vote for a different party once in a while if it is the one which makes the most sense for the time we live in.
Posted by: Rex | September 4, 2008, 3:35 am 3:35 am
The discourse from all the posts here are as visceral as what was spoken tonight (and gee a female doesn’t have to have a Harvard Law degree to use big words…I have a meager BA from one of those lowly state colleges). Maybe if we (posters) practiced what we are preaching here, the politicians would get the message. What will all of you say when the admitted “attack dog” (and this is a DNC quote)Sen. Biden gets done ripping the GOP. Civility starts with us and after reading the recent posts on political sites, I am convinced that our whole nation needs some serious “paper training” in manners. I will be forced to vote again “for the lessor of the evils” and frankly I’m getting kind of tired of that. I find very little redeeming qualities in our choices but do give points to Sen. McCain for his selfless military service. We could use a good Eisenhower or Teddy Roosevelt right now.
