Small-Town Colorado Mayor Jokes He Should Have Been Obama’s Veep

"As the mayor of a small town, I’m a little disappointed that I wasn’t selected by Barack Obama to be his vice president," said Jacob Smith just now.

Smith is the mayor of Golden, Colo., population 17,159.

He’s introducing Sen. Obama right now in this key battleground area — Jefferson County — in this battleground state.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin — who six years ago was Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska; which is what Smith was joking about — was here yesterday.

You can watch some of her speech below.

UPDATE:  RNC spokesmen Danny Diaz writes: “That would be tough due to the fact Obama believes small town America is bitter and clings to guns and religion.”

Why are there no posts regarding Obama’s meddling with the Iraq troop withdrawal?
All I see with these posts is non-stop ridiculing and mocking of Governor Palin.

Concerned in OH,
Obama admitted it where? I believe he said the story was completely false. Or did the same quack journalist (and I use the term loosely and do not mean to offend real journalists) also write an article saying Obama admitted to trying to interfer in Iraq?

No, but the Post did run a follow-up today including the Obama’s campaign denial of the reports.
Why would they do that if they are so biased?

Someone should tell the mayor first he has to get elected governor of his state. Next, he has to makesome significant improvements on how state governance is managed. Then maybe he can be VP when he grows up.

Concerned in OH – I also read about BO’s interference with the return of our troops from Iraq so he can claim credit if he gets elected. Doesn’t this remind you of the claim that was made against Reagan that he interfered with the return of the American hostages from Iran until after the election? In fact, George H. W. Bush was claimed to have flown to Iran in an SR-71? Notice how the double standards are applied today. There was no evidence for the claim against Reagan, but when claims are brought up against BO, friend of terrorist, it is squelched by the MSM? More examples of hypocrisy.

Jake,
Sarah Palin was NOT the mayor 2 years ago.
She hasn’t been mayor since 2002. She had a big job in between. She ran for Lt. Gov. (only lost by 2,000 votes) and was placed as head of the oil and gas commission, where she cleaned house of the sloths in her own party.
So four years ago when Obama was still only a state legislator, she was not a mayor but head of the oil and gas commission. I’m so tired of this stuff.

I am a long time democrat and I and delighted to see Hollywood celebrities and even small town mayors coming out against someone who is actually qualified. Instead of talking issues, the democratic party has become the party of hate. One would think we were in Europe in the late 1930s. I am disgusted with many in the democratic party rank and file.
Obama should riase the dialog to issues. He will ose if he continues to let the campaign be about sniping. He should come out and tell Hollywood to talk energy – where they can be a good role model.

At least he didn’t say he would get a Golden parachute when he left office. Golden is the home of the Colorado School of Mines and the main Coors Brewery. There also isn’t any evidence of his eing vindictive and firing long serving officials to replace them with cronies as Palin did both as a mayor and a governor.

She was given a political job by Murkowski on the Oil & Gas Commission, one of 3 seats. Not commissioner. Normally that slot was resevred for the general public. Murkowski appointed a political ally he had featured in his campaign commercials.

QUOTE: “Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission Chairwoman Sarah Palin said Friday she is resigning amid frustration that she is being forced to keep silent about ethics allegations against Republican Party of Alaska chairman Randy Ruedrich”
———————————–
She wasn’t the head of the commission. She was appointed by Murkowski to the slot reserved for the general public. She was one of 3 on the commission.

Today he will host a dinner in Beverly Hills — costing attendees $28,500 dollars each”
Obama has nothing on McCain
Campaign manager Rick Davis released the details of the “McCain Victory 08” fund on Friday. He said the entity is a joint committee, combining the McCain campaign, the Republican National Committee and four key states under a “hybrid legal structure.”
The idea is to tap donors for more than the $2,300 limit set by campaign finance laws. Under legislation pushed by McCain in his role as a senator from Arizona, an individual can donate a maximum of $2,300 to a presidential primary campaign and the same amount to the general election campaign. Although McCain received the number of delegates necessary to secure the nomination in March, he will not be the party’s official nominee until the convention in September—so he is still running a primary campaign.
The new structure allows up to $70,000 in individual contributions by channeling the money into different McCain-centric funds. The first $2,300 of that would go to McCain’s primary campaign. The Republican National Committee would receive $28,500 of the donation. The remaining funds would be divided equally, up to $10,000 a piece, among four states the campaign has designated as battlegrounds for November: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado and New Mexico.

Commander-in-chief of the National Guard. No need to make this sound bigger than it really is. She has done nothing in the commander-in-chief role other than preside over a ceremony. The only real thing the governor does with the National Guard is call them up in a state emergency, like distibuting food and providing security after a natural disaster. It is no where in line with being the commander-in-chief of the US military. Once the National Guard unit is called up to serve in a federal capacity, the governor of the state has absolutely no control over the units.
You should try to focus on the the things she has done to help the people of the state, like reducing domestic violence…opps, sorry, she has stalled the work on that.

No. A fair parallel would be a statement from thousands of republican state legislators throughout the country expecting to be nominated for president.Incredible isn’t it? That’s what we are looking at in Obama though! Really, what meaningful credentials does he have on the economy?! Nothing. At least McCain was chair of the Senate Commerce Committee through 2004.Obama’s bluster does not make up for his lack of experience. His income redistribution plans are particularly frightening coming from someone with so little knowledge and experience.

No one seems to bring up one of the Democrats’ ( now former ) poster children, John Edwards – and the thin resume he brought to the VP slot – yet they were all ga-ga about him, even touting him as a potential Presidential
candidate – twice.
Yet, he only had one term in congress, and absolutely no executive experience. His experience prior to the 1 term in Congress? Trial lawyer.
Yet – to the democrats, he was ready to step in as President.
If that’s so – how is it that a candidate with years of ACTUAL EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE, at the local and state levels, is less capable of being the vice president than a trial lawyer with a few years in congress?

- Senior Citizen.
- Voted for the war in Iraq.
- Senator for your entire adult life; no other job experience.
- Washington insider for over 35 years.
- Son and brother Washington lobbyists.
- Sold your house at 6 times what you bought it to the top executive of the firm that has donated the most money to your campaign.
- Share a connection with Tony Rezko.
- Get only about 2,500 votes from the people in your home state in bid for Presidency.

How awesome of the partisans below to spew “facts” they fabricate from thin air. I mean, that’s the primary strategy of the GOP candidate and what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, right?
To Zank, the person below who posted the “qualifications” of Obama’s VP, I’d like to ask the following:
* Can you provide a reputable news source article that says that Joe Biden’s brother and son are lobbyists? I can show you one that says his son is going to Iraq in August.
* Can you tell me what the connection is between Joe Biden and Tony Rezko? Or even Barack and Tony Rezko?
* If Joe Biden sold his hosue for six times it’s value, why is his net worth only $150K? That includes the value of his house and all his wordly possessions.
* If Biden showed poorly in the Democratic primary, wouldn’t that suggest that very few moneyed interests were willing to contribute to his campaign? If so, wouldn’t that contradict your entire case?
But hey, what do I know. I’m probably a west coast elitist who likes to do things like “research” my “opinions” before I “open my mouth.” We have this thing out here, it’s called “Google.”
I’m no hockey dad, but out here in the elite west, I know we don’t like to “talk out of our butts”. I can respect that people might do things differently in other parts of the country.

Twilson –
Yes only a Congressman can attach an earmark. Both as mayor and as governor Palin engaged the services of a lobbyist to lobby Congress for more pork for the state. Under her mayorship, Wasilla received $27M, for a town of 5-9,000!
As governor, he state receives more earmarked money per capita than any other state. This is a state which is so awash in oil profits that every man, woman and child received a $2,000 check this year. If she’s against wasteful spending, if she’s the outside reformer, if Alaska will build itself a bridge when it needs one … why is her state addicted to the pork?

——————————————
Charlie Rangle bought a house for about $355k and sold it 2-3 years later for about $425k.
During those years he reported the value of his house was between 0-$100k.
Biden sold his house for $1.2M, six times what he paid for it.
If Biden now says he only has $150k, lives in a swank, not house, but compound in a fancy area of Deleware, could he POSSIBLY be underestimating his net worth?

Posted by: Dave in lv | September 16, 2008, 10:46 pm 10:46 pm

Per Biden’s tax returns he and his wife make $200-350K per year.
They also give between $100 to $350 per year to charity.
I think it be safely said the Bidens are not very charitable when it comes to giving away their own money for the poor, disaster relief or even their local library.
But as the third most liberal voting record can attest, he is quite willing to give away your money all day long.

Wow, I just checked into your story. Basically, Biden bought a fixer-upper when it was scheduled to be demolished. 20 years later, he sells it at 6 times what he bought it for and you’re surprised!? That’s called “a good investment.”
Moreover, the $1.2M that he sold it for, that was the house’s appraised value.
Man, I bet Rush didn’t tell you that part did he? Or was it Hannity?
Wow guys, great scoop. Senator Biden sells his house for a fair market value after he lives in it for 20 years, to the rich CEO of a bank in a state where almost every bank in the country is headquartered.
Have you people even heard of Google?

Palin was a washout as mayor
of Wasilla. The small town was
debt-free when she took office
and when she left some six years
later to run for Governor the
town was 22 million dollars in
debt.
She praises herself as a reformer
and a fiscal conservative.

Jesse
Once again you missed the point.
Your question was :
“* If Joe Biden sold his hosue for six times it’s value, why is his net worth only $150K? That includes the value of his house and all his wordly possessions.”
You now admit he did receive six times or $1.2M and is now only claiming a net worth of $150k.
Given the Bidens give zip to charity, where is he hiding this and his other money?
Also note your previous attack in doubting the sale took place is proven to be bogus.

Yes, Palin was a washout as a mayor. That’s why she won the governorship and today has the very best approval rating of any governor as well as any politician that I know of.
Her APPROVAL rating is over 80% from her constituents.
What is Obama’s approval rating again?
What, somehow I missed Obama’s rating being reported by the MSM.

Dave in lv:
I had another comment where I pointed to a list of US Senators and their net worths. For some reason, the moderator here removed it, maybe because I was linking to another site.
The range for his net worth according to OpenCongress is -$50k – $250K, an approximation. The Washington Post puts it between $100K – $150K. The Post also reports that he and his wife together made $250K in 2007 and $200K in 2006.
Re: Palin’s approval rating. What am I supposed to take away from her 80% approval rating?
The state has fewer people than the city I live in and has consistently voted Republican since it joined the Union. Alaska has a Republican Governor who gives every citizen a $2,000 check while she appears before Congress requesting funding for her state’s projects?
I’d give her an approval if I lived there too! It sure doesn’t mean I think she’s ready to be the President (which is what being the VP candidate means.)

Did I doubt that he sold the house? I don’t think so but if I did then I did it mistakenly.

BTW, I just found an article on Bloomberg about his record this year on charity. It’s about $1000 this year, obviously well below the national average.
Then there’s this line, “The couple had no investment income and $99 in taxable interest. Biden’s financial disclosure returns also show donations of speaking fees to charity that aren’t reported on the tax returns.”
The article also says that they give to their church and to charities but don’t claim it. So, I guess the big story is that they need an accountant, or some kind of tax planning services.

_______________
True, but the town approved the spending!
THEY wanted a $13,000,000 high tech sports arena….. She complied.
….. and so on and so on and so on.
Obama promises great bonuses for the poor and moderately poor…. but
Will he deliver without taking away from the middle-middle class and those in higher brackets who are not only supporting their small businesses, but also their employees?
hmmmmmmm
probably not!
