Swedish TV Finds New Footage of McCain Being Released From Vietnamese POW Camp

Swedish TV SVT has unearthed some interesting footage of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., being released from his Vietnamese POW Camp in 1973.

You can see it  HERE.

Former SVT reporter Erik Eriksson tells the Associated Press that he found the video in the network’s archives; it shows a very lean McCain stepping off a bus with other prisoners, and walking with a slight limp.

Eriksson said the footage was filmed in Hanoi on March 14, 1973, by a Vietnamese cameraman.

At the very least, the footage should quiet those anti-McCain lunatics out there who claim McCain left his POW camp in anything other than skinny and fragile condition.

It doesn’t matter. We really shouldn’t be electing our President on something he endured (not accomplished, endured) 40 years ago.
One would only consider voting for JOhn McCain, if for some reason they want to see the United States of America continue its decline.

Lunatics? Wow.
Regardless how he left, hats off to McCain.
………………….
Forty years later…..
McCain has proven to be incapable of being president
1. his views on the war
2. taxes
3. sarah palin pick
4. low road campaign
5. temperment
6. age
7. don’t know much about the economy
8. voted with bush 90%
9. flip flopped on HIS legislation
10. suspect health conditions.

John Mccains recollections of his treatment as a pow vary a great deal from other senior officers in a camp called the Plantation Did John recive special treatment since he was the son of Admiral Mccain the answer is YES. John McCain had two nicknames while he was a captive of the vietnamese. One the US.Military Intellegence refering to him was SONGBIRD apparently six days after his capture he asked to be treated for his injuries and his captors said yes in exchange for Intellegence information Mccain was immediatly taken to hospital I’ll leave it to your good senses to figure out how he got the name Songbird. His other nick was the prince because he was the son of an Admiral. The enemy belived that he was some sort of royal.

Obama-supporters: STOP lying about McCain. This man is a patriot and hero, who you should thank every day for fighting for YOUR freedom, to allow you to sit at your lonely computer every day and write criticism of him and your government. He has committed his life to the service and welfare of this country.
THAT is why he is qualified to be President. Explain WHAT exactly has Obama done for the service of this country? What has Obama done for the service of anything except his own selfish goals? What experience does he have dealing with crisis situations? NONE.
I’ll take an experienced patriot and hero, who I KNOW will fight for me, because he has done it, over Obama the fraud, who hasn’t fought for anything, just talks, any day.

I am not interested in John McCain’s years as a POW. There many, many other men that endured the tortures of being a POW and we have not elevated these men to hero status nor do we see them using their POW status as a credential for being president. John McCain served his country as did many others AND as many are doing right now and for that I thank all of them. But I find it completely self serving of John McCain to push his POW status as a credential to be president.

For the Obama lovers, McCain being a POW is a higher qualification for presidency then Obama living in Indonesia as a young child (Obama thinks thats highly relevant for some reason).
McCain talks about his POW experience in relation to running for president in that it shows his judgment (didn’t some candidate say thats all that matters?), he chose country over his own well being. Obama can make no similar claim.
But no the new footage won’t stop the “anti-mccain people” (aka democrat 527′s).

I don’t understand this video. At the RNC they said as a result of his torture he could no longer raise his arms so that “John McCain could not salute his own flag?”

When I vote I weigh a variety of issues. For me the cards have stacked against Obama. I am registered independent from a state in which independents cant participate in the primaries. McCain’s service was profoundly honorable, but it has nothing to do with being President.
Besides that, he uses it as an excuse for everything, including why he voted against the Martin Luther King national holiday.
And his behavior NOW, during this campaign, is atrocious and condemnable.
Putting a corrupt governor with no domestic or foreign policy knowledge or even curiousity a heartbeat from the Presidency is literally insane.
That decision alone disqualifies him from the Presidency.

Your argument proves my choice.
You say you are not interested in Palin. You should. She is next in line should something happen to McCain.
Only God know the longevity of McCain. Not us. Therefore we must do what you call “risk management”. McCain failed to do this by placing a unknow unvetted person in the #2 spot.
Now I will perform “risk management” by voting against him.
I encourage all to do so.
This is far from Country First. More like Mccain First.

I find it interesting that Obama supporters deny the fact that being a POW for years is something to be honored. even if the situation was reversed I would give reverence to Obama for having been a POW.
The obamabots only know how to attack something and that is why your campaign is losing.

Posted by: A Guy Named Keith | September 11, 2008, 11:16 am 11:16 am

As a military veteran from a military family who voted for John Kerry in 2004, I am offended by the callow, self-absorbed and insulting dismissals of John McCain’s service and imprisonment in Vietnam. I’m a Democrat; but such moronic comments from Obama supporters make me ashamed of the Democratic Party. A very close family friend spent 7 years in the Hanoi Hilton, until he was captured trying to escape and was tortured to death. Many others also died. Everytime you try to trivialize it, you insult every parent of a servicemember in this country. Dismiss John McCain’s service, and the courage and character he showed as a POW at your own peril in November.

Do you really believe that anything, factual or otherwise, will quiet the desperate and pathetic attacks now being leveled at John McCain by the Obamabots?
When the Obamabots are not attacking, their leader is busy making degrading remarks about McCain’s running mate, the Governor or Alaska, Sarah Palin.
And, as usual, either the great Obama, his handlers, or Old Joe Biden have to “explain” the gaffes on national television.
Obama…we all know what you said and what you meant…
And, Old Joe Biden, we haven’t forgotten your degrading remarks, either…

Omentum, I never said that was the only reason to vote for McCain. I also never said I was voting for McCain.
Obama lost my respect a long time ago. You lost yesterday when he just could not apologize and cried to the media that he was the one who was wronged, when he was the one who said something that was perceived as offensive. Apologize, say you didn’t mean it that way , instead of labeling the people who were offended as Phony rage.Whether he thought it was phony or not, as a LEADER, he should have apologized.
Countless people have had to Obama for remarks that were far more innocent “uppity people” , etc, yet he could not just apologize.
That says a lot to me about his lack of character and arrogance. He seemed like a little b**ch

I haven’t heard or read any issues from the Obama campaign regarding Sen. MCcain’s condition upon release back in ’73. Have we come to this now? Responding with outrage to attacks that never happened?
Issues man, ISSUES!
Why aren’t there huge headlines and demands for accountability for lies regarding and true attempts to obfuscate the issues? Political reporting is not supposed to be entertaining, it is supposed to be informative.

“At the very least the footage should quiet those anti-McCain lunatics out there who claim McCain left his POW camp in anything other than skinny and fragile condition”.
Why the word “lunatic” in your post?
Nobody should disparage Senator Mccain’s sacrifice. It is he who wore the Shoe who knows where it pinches.
He went through the pain and deprivationn and he is still carrying the scars.
But I feel he has used that Sacrifice to gain political advantages for the past 28 years and I think it is time he moved on.

I was a U.S. airman engaged in crime against the Vietnamese country and people. I bomb their cities town and caused more injury and death for the people of Vietnam. After I was captured I was taken to a hospital in Da Nang where I received very good medical treatment. I was given an operation on my leg which allowed me to walk again and a cast on my right arm which was badly broken when I punched out of my jet. The doctors were very good and knew a great deal about the practice of medicine.
I have remained in hospital for some time now and have regained much strength and health.”

The choice is Obama or McCain.
People will decide on character, who do you think has the character?
A guy who talks and talks but has nothing to show? Obama will not move one step if it doesn’t benefits him politically. All he’s done is to write 2 books about himself before he was 45, and run for office after office. His accomplishment are, what, voter registration? Win a primary with the MSM and the party bosses on his side?
There’s a reason McCain is loathed by the right wing extremists, he’s his own guy. Against all political convention, many times he stuck to his views of what was right, regardless of ideologies. That’s character.

I want to see the film but for some reason it won’t go beyond Sen. McCain stepping off the bus. I wish we could just keep remembering this man was spared from death THREE TIMES! I believe John Sydney McCain will be our 44th President…a lesser man would have given up….he was spared for a higher purpose….to serve this country that he so loves, as it’s 44th President. I suggest all of you watch the CNN and FOX bios on both candidates….your choice is clear.

Posted by: Debra | September 11, 2008, 12:22 pm 12:22 pm

For those of you who said things along the lines of “what does being a POW have to do with being president?” you should refer back to McCain’s convention speech. He explained in clear and compelling terms how his experiences as a POW influenced the rest of his life and shaped the man he is today, the man who would be president. And for those of you like Deb who disparage his behavior in captivity and dare to use his words spoken in captivity under torture to imply that he was a collaborator or did not have it so bad, shame on you. McCain has not “used” his POW status for political gain– but he has spoken about it because it is essential to understanding his worldview and his attitude toward service and his country.

Who cares? Since when did being captured by the enemy automatically give you Presidential credentials? Honor? The man is showing no signs of honor right now. McCain should run on his years in Washington, his record, the issues… you know, silly stuff like that. The POW thing has been milked for all it’s worth — which to a lot of us, isn’t worth much because there were many more men, braver than McCain, that survived or died in Vietnam. And to this day, no one cares about them or sees that they’re protected with proper health care and benefits.

even other veterans have stated being a ‘pow’ is not a qualifier to automatically become annointed president or supreme ruler. it matters not a whit that he was captured, tortured or suffered regarding the office of president of the united states.
that is a straight talk fact. it was a terribly inhumane tragedy that others have suffered. but whose suffering, whose sacrifice is above others. some will say it is their god. few will say their own earthly pains, taken as just a moment in their life, qualify them to lead.
except for john mccain. he has politicized his struggle and cheapened it for personal gain. that he has not been called on it is what he appears to be counting on. that no one will question any soldier. but other soldiers, to the contrary, have.
on the day mccain spoke at the convention, he played a tape showing the towers under attack at a convention where his ‘pow’ mantra was the only statement he could make. so why wouldn’t it be suspect that on a solemn day about that attack, a video curiously finds its way into public release showing his hanoi hilton days. this smells like a rove, walks like a rove, talks like a rove. and is on a politico blog using curious adjectives. the gop and mccain believe we are all as stupid as we were when bush was elected. or at least as stupid as when he was reelected. this is not a coincidence. not at all.

A reporter for the Anchorage daily, Gregg Erickson, even did an online chat with the Washington Post, in which he revealed that Palin’s approval rating in the state was not the much-touted 80%, but 65% and sinking — and that among journalists who followed her it might be in the “teens.”

His paper found a number of leading Republican officeholders in the state who mocked Palin’s qualifications. “She’s not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president?” said Lyda Green, the president of the State Senate, a Republican from Palin’s hometown of Wasilla. “Look at what she’s done to this state. What would she do to the nation?”

Omentum,
What if someone supported a bill in the Senate that would allow a US state to create it’s own Kingdom, complete with it’s own government and ambassdor to the US? What if that bill was also widely considered (even by the bill’s submitter) to be the first step for that state to split from the union? We’re talking about an actual bill on the floor of the US Senate. Would you support it? Look up Akaka Bill.
So let’s see … VP candidate’s spouse attending some meetings of a do-nothing political group vs. Presidential candidate making things happen on the floor of the Senate to bump his own state out of the union. Which one are you more concerned about?

Beezer:
I had the same response to the video that you did. I have for YEARS heard this meme about McCain being unable to raise his arms up to comb his own hair “because of the torture he received” I have heard it repeated on more than one occasion by the fawning press that McCain “can’t even raise his hands up to salute the flag he loves so much” — yet, here, I see a thin (he was thin BEFORE he was shot down), healthy man with a slight limp — fully able to raise his arms up to salute without any trouble or wince of pain. Is the arms-over-his-head story another fabrication?!

I’m sure you’ll find many Republicans in Alaska who will trash talk Palin.
This spunky maverick bucked her own party for the good of the people, exposing fraud and corruption and shaking the establishment from top to bottom.
She stepped down as chairwoman of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and blew the whistle on Republicans who were benefitting personally from their positions on the Commission.
Sarah Palin isn’t going to Washington to seek the ‘ good opinion. She’s going to Washington for good of the people!

The United States had long sought to pressure Vietnam to provide complete information on POWs and MIAs as a condition for normalizing diplomatic relations.
In October 1990 John McCain said on the floor of the Senate: “Mr. President, I am anxious to construct a new relationship with our old adversary (Vietnam)”. He, who was in a Vietnamese prison camps for five and a half years, was pushing hard for normalized relations with Hanoi long before anyone else was.

Many who are making disparaging comments about McCain with respect to the video footage were not born yet during that time.
I remember sitting in class with many GI’s who had come back and were going to college. You have not witnessed how they would get down to the floor when they heard a popping noise. You have not seen how they, in spite of being crippled either by torture or severe wound, would “man up” meaning try to move as “normally” as possible in the presence of officers or their parents or families. They could not bear to see the pain on their families faces when they saw them at their weakest. They would do the same when spit upon or insulted by their own counrtymen, as if somehow they, who had been drafted, were responsible for the political decisions that that been made. No one saw them crumple when they thought they were alone except those of us who were their friends, or siblings, or simply did not judge them.
Viet Nam was not going to release any prisoners to the public that had not been put into some semblance of normal shape prior to their release. And the men were not going to give any sign of weakness in public before their captors and their nation. Anyone who does not understand this is ignorant.
One of my very close relatives was a physician at a Vet hospital, having been drafted and an army man himself. He came home with stories every night about these men. They would come in trying to be as normal as possible before crumpling in pain.
I looked at the video closely. McCain doesn’t look that great and teeth are missing from his mouth. He limps, he opens and closes his mouth a sign of pain) and he holds his arms more stiffly than the other men. I’m certain he did what he had to do not to appear weak in public.
The vietnamese and the US have both corroborated his torture etc. It’s too bad that the people of my party feel they have to rip apart his service. Perhaps they should all visit vet hospitals for a few days. It may open their eyes.

Posted by: Nader/Gonzalez08 | September 11, 2008, 5:16 pm 5:16 pm

As an occasional reader of the US media (and related readers’ comments), I must say that I am totally stunned by the sheer vitriol directed towards McCain’s military service.
Ok, you may disagree with him and his party and strongly favour the other candidate, but… why all this personal HATE?? I simply don’t understand you.

Posted by: frankyg | September 11, 2008, 5:16 pm 5:16 pm

What I am very sad about is John McCain has always used his time as a POW for political gain. I applaud and respect his service and the time he spent as a POW. Anyone that is a POW should be applauded.
But unfortunately John McCain himself brought his service into politics. Bush used Kerry’s military service against him. I remember and it was so disgraceful.
The only thing I find interesting from a medical observation. And do feel qualified as I am medical professional. I could not help noticing the apparent ease he lifted his arms to salute. I replayed and replayed the video attempting to see some evidence of discomfort. I could not find any visible evidence pf any apparent medical shoulder problems. I can not say he didn’t have. But he appears to have recuperated. I only mention this as John McCain has claimed his shoulders were result of problems he suffered time and time again. McCain has seemed to play this shoulder condition up during all political campaigns he has been in. Has been interesting observation to see.
Interesting video.
Jake – Thanks for showing us!!

It is obvious to me that he suffered severely as a result of his capture and injuries.
John McCain has devoted his life to the service of this country. His opponent has given lip service only, in my opinion.
I will vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

A guy named Keith can’t READ.
Deb’s source is stated in her FIRST LINE.
“A reporter for the Anchorage daily, Gregg Erickson”
But yeah that’s probably not good enough for you republicans.
Check Robert Ebert’s Chicago SunTimes column (search for Palin).
Also Search the Anchorage Newspaper.
Also search the Washington Post, NY Times, Wall Street Journal, etc. etc.
The Media is against McCain and Palin because they have proven time and time again to be LIARS (check any of their ads for FACTS and if you really WANT to see it you will-but chances are you don’t want the truth because you can’t handle the truth)…

the question I have is not about McCain, it is more about how we could win the COLD WAR against mother RUSSIA, and we can whip Iraq and Afghanistan, but we could not help South Vietnam whoop up on North Vietnam? I sense that the Military Industrial Complex President Eisenhower warned us about might have had a part in that.

Just going through and graduating from basic military training alone changes a person forever! No one but a military veteran can attest to this. People who serve the military join for different reasons, but the majority do so because they have a sense of duty, dedication and honor. How I wish it would be mandatory for all Americans upon graduating from high school to have at least go through basic military training to make them appreciate and love their country, flag, and what it stands for. I’m 47 years old, seved in the military for 23 years, and I thank God, my parents, and the military for making the person I am.
I believe Senator McCain’s wealth of military/public service, life experiences, character and honor qualifies him to be our president. What qualifies Barack Obama? Being being Black, and community organizer for three years.

Posted by: Diana in California | September 12, 2008, 1:52 am 1:52 am

Senator John McCain and his wife Cindy have paid their dues to reside at the White House, and have always been proud Americans.
Senator McCain has served in the military for 22+ years during which time he was a POW, one term as House of Representatives, 24 years as Senator, donates his salary and profits from his books to charity, leads by example.
Cindy McCain has served her country by standing by her husband, mother of two sons in the military, a philanthropist who travels around the world doing humanitarian/charity work for the needy.
What has Barack Obama and his wife done for their country? Nothing, NADA! How much money did they contribute to charity? Only 1% of close to $5 million they earned last year, and was contributed to Wright’s Trinity Church. And Obama talks about inspiring people when he does not lead by example, he’s a JOKE!

Clearly the video has been edited to showcase only Sen. McCain. I contend that the footage of Sen. McCain saluting was probably taken shortly after he was shot down and at the beginning of his internment and not at the conclusion. Besides how is it that the camera happens to be on Sen. McCain the moment that his name is called out…without his rank, by the way. And if you notice, Sen. McCain doesn’t budge when his name is mentioned. Clearly the voice is dubbed in. This tape is a fake!

Posted by: James Danley | September 12, 2008, 7:55 am 7:55 am

All you liberals need to step aside for a true American hero. The poster who said the movie was a fake is a moron. It came from Sweden and yes was edited into a 30 second peice it is actually more than a minute 40 seconds. If you libs actually read the news you might have known that. What I need to know is what had Obame done. The poster on flip floping hasn’t Obama flipped flopped on everything from his economic package to the Bridge to no where. What credentials does Obama have to be Commander in Chief? I will answer for you none. He was a community organizer in Chicago facing the inner city people when McCain was facing the North Vietnamese. You have the right to vote for whomever you want but give the guy some credit who suffered more for your rights than any posters on her have.

To thoose who beleive this was planned as PR to enforce McCain, I would like to give you some additional info.
SVT who has the archive, are a very pro democrat channel. They are very biased to their reporting to the Democrats benefits.
There is no way the channel would hold back this news, to help the McCain camp.

Posted by: Swede | September 13, 2008, 5:20 am 5:20 am

The footage is real. I should have said what is portrayed is a fraud.

Posted by: James Danley | September 13, 2008, 11:55 am 11:55 am

Its no fraud, the audio comes from the same film, the camera films the vietnamese officer that reads his name.
The shorter cut of the movie uses the audio from the the officer with the film of McCain.
A common editing techniqe if you have to shorten a clip. Its not taken from another event.
There are of course alot more film from that event, but the station has edited out things that doesnt have to do with McCain.
And the station that did the editing is pro-democrat, so its not a big chance this was edited to help McCain in the election.

Posted by: Swede | September 13, 2008, 12:36 pm 12:36 pm

What is heroic about bombing innocent civilians from 30,000 feet in an illegal war thousands of miles away from the US? Over 3 million civilians were killed, thousands are still dying from agent orange and don’t forget the Vietnam vets – 58,000 young men gone and McCain loved it.
After he had lost one ship, he volunteered to keep killing at a time when 1,000 women and kids were being killed every week.
What the hell is heroic about that?
You republicans need to take a chill pill and relax a bit. McCain is a liar, full stop.
