The Note: McCain Mixing Economic Messages
ABC News’ Rick Klein and Z. Byron Wolf report in Thursday’s Note:
HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. — It turns out the vaunted new McCain message machine can’t produce the candidate, himself, a message on the big issue of the moment. And, it turns out, even really nice lipstick smears.
This hasn’t been a case of Sen. Barack Obama finding his voice as much as it’s been Sen. John McCain losing his. (As for Gov. Sarah Palin — you don’t need to see her e-mails to know that, after a while, even a hip new song gets old.)
At this snapshot in the race, there is no other issue — not pigs, not sexism, not the surge, not anything, really, that bodes particularly well for Team McCain.
It’s 48-43 in the latest New York Times/CBS poll — the Palin bounce bouncing right back to where we were pre-conventions.
Ditto Quinnipiac, which gives Obama a 14-point lead among women and a 49–45 lead nationwide.

"Despite an intense effort to distance himself from the way his party has done business in Washington, Sen. John McCain is seen by voters as far less likely to bring change to Washington than Senator Barack Obama," Robin Toner and Adam Nagourney report in the Times write-up. "The latest poll indicates ‘the Palin effect’ was, at least so far, a limited burst of interest. … The Times/CBS News poll suggested that Ms. Palin’s selection has, to date, helped Mr. McCain only among Republican base voters; there was no evidence of significantly increased support for him among women in general."
"Economic 9/11," former Clinton chief of staff Leon Panetta tells USA Today (and which party would more happily embrace this analogy?).
The current president is doing his best Silent Cal, and today in Washington, they are battening down the hatches. President Bush canceled a trip to Alabama and Treasury officials put off testimony before the Senate Banking Committee for the second time this week.
"Once again, New York is the focus of the nation, and the amount of mass media concentrated there guarantees that this economic crisis will remain where it belongs — at the center of attention," David Broder writes in his column. "For all the excitement Palin has generated, the national mood is still a major barrier for McCain and the Republicans."
There’s palpable concern about the economy — Wall Street’s woes reaching already demoralized places like West Virginia, where ABC’s "50 States in 50 Days" tour is in town for "Good Morning America," Thursday, and far, far beyond.

Talk about mixing messages—-in Elko, Nevada Obama told an audience “I need you to go out and talk to your friends and talk to your neighbors. I want you to talk to them whether they are independent or whether they are Republican. I want you to argue with them and get in their face”. What is this man starting —argue with them and “get in their face”. This is not a President, this is a community organizer at work and not for a community I want to live in.

Did you see the New York Times/CBS News poll that found Obama is viewed by Americans as likely to bring about change, while McCain is seen as a “TYPICAL REPUBLICAN” who would simply continue or expand BUSH’S policies.
Evidently the “Palin effect” has worn off. Americans are not impressed that she can see Russia from Alaska. Sorry, Sarah

Bias? McCain can’t even get out of his own way. One day he’s for deregulation, the next he’s against it. He thinks the economy is fundamentally sound?!?!?
His train of thought isn’t fundamentally sound!

Let’s hope that Americans won’t be fooled again by new GOP stunts in the two months to come.
And wow, Palin has lost her appeal VERY quickly. No remark has been more silly than that she would be the Republican Obama…
Obama is riding the waves for almost two years now, with permanent exposure, and yet yesterday 14,000 people showed up again to listen to him in Vegas.
Obama is a category and a quality of his own. He has become a chapter in American history already.
Palin’s place in American history will be her 15 minutes of TV and news paper fame.

John McCain doesn’t have a message because he can’t be for Bush and he can’t be against him. If he sounds like he’s against Bush he loses the Republican base – if he sounds like he’s for Bush he loses everybody else. If he speaks out against deregulation he contradicts his own record. IF the election stays on the issues he will sink further behind.

Canada is talking about it but it is hush, hush in America— Lehman Brothers: Obama’s Rezko-Auchi conflict of interest. A secret $3.5 million loan from an Auchi company to key early-money Barack Obama fundraiser Antoin Rezko was exposed while Rezko was awaiting trial on fraud and money-laundering charges earlier this year.

We can’t afford four more years of neo-con rule. John McCain’s message is mixed because he says what ever he thinks the country wants to hear. He has no central core of beliefs, he is just a phoney. We need leadership not butt kissing.

McCain is all about DE-regulation and has voted 100% of the time to deregulate… he is part of the reason Wallstreet has crumbled… he will NOT be able to fix the disaster he helped to create. You don’t send a message to the ruling party that they need to reform by re-electing them for a third term, you kick them to the curb and give the other guy a chance to make it right.
Posted by: McBraindead | September 18, 2008, 9:30 am 9:30 am
No wonder McCain is mixing his messages. His main economic advisor told us our economic woes are mental. This guy also helped the big banks with lobbying for loosening the regulations that have helped this mess.
McCain’s latest corproate American guru, Carly…she inflicted pain upon thousands of Americans as she outsourced their jobs overseas and laid off thousands more. She left HP is a tremendous mess while getting millions in compensation.
Another advisor is a Phillip Morris tobacco lobbiest Mccain once threw out of his office, but now calls friend.
How can we expect him to change the policies that have led to thsi economic crisis? He is being advised and financially supported by the very people who helped cause this mess. all while they are very well compensated, saved millions with the GOP tax reductions.
My friends, this is not change.

We’ve heard enough whining about alleged media bias. You can’t control the media. Notice how they support their opinions with hard data? So, apparently the media, all polling firms, and all those polled have liberal bias, huh? Are they sexist too? Give it up. Obama/Biden 08

Ann, it seems the only real press that talking about Obama’s dirty past are British and Canadian press, and of course our bloggers. Auchi is just a name in a long list of many and if you read some of the blogs and British and Canadian sites you will find some shocking scary stuff. If the American press would do their jobs (HAHA as if) some of the others might get a real glimpse of the REAL Barack Obama.

McCain is losing it–he doesn’t know Spain is in Europe, doesn’t know who the head of its government is, won’t even say if he’ll talk to the the guy–and Palin knows even less.
We live in the world, and McCain lives in the past.
Let’s not even go to what he says about the economy that clearly demonstrates he is simply not ready to be president in these troubled times.
Yet conservative spinmasters continue to tout this man as the best to lead. Give me a break. You put party loyalty before country. Shameful.

Thank you for reporting last night on McCain’s past support of deregulation, but why did you not give Obama equal time to present his policy to solve this economic crisis? Presenting only one candidate gives tacit support of that candidate. The Bush administration’s policies have bankrupted Amnerica, and McCain has been a large part of them. We cannot continue them just because McCain has tapped once again into the support of the religious right. Why not go all the way back to his role in the Keating Five scandal? Finally, you have left behind the silliness of lipstick and personalities, and seem poised to actually report on the issues that matter to us; yet you only went halfway. ABC News, you are our last best hope for information that is comprehensive and objective. Please do your job!

How is it media bias when they simply tell the truth?
You may not like it, but John McCain has behaved like an idiot over the last few days. He has demonstrated repeatedly he is out of his league.
And worst example: his pick of Palin as VP. Talk about an empty suit.
Whether you protest or not, John McCain has been dead wrong about so many things during this campaign, and his responses this week to the economic meltdown has just highlighted his incompetency.
Don’t blame the media. Blame the candidate.

Both Obama and McCain talk about change, but I offer a simple challenge to both. If you are truly a man of action, substance and good moral fiber, then put your money where your mouth is and restore some level of confidence from the middle class American public by accepting my challenge: You don’t have to have a political science degree to know that neither of you can win this election without winning the vote of the middle class American, regardless of race, gender, etc. So, here’s my challenge to you:
Commit publicly in your campaign to establish, within 90 days of taking office, your administration will immediately create an Ethics Committee, with the sole purpose and goal to bring to justice and punish corrupt politicians caught in their lies, illegal and immoral dealings with corporate lobbyist, and corporate executives who steal hard earned money from their employees and stockholders and taxpayers with their back-stabbing tactics and hiding or lying about facts that cause American’s to loose jobs, pensions, 401k’s, etc…
This committee would, with the solid support of your White House administration, eliminate the golden parachutes for these crooked politicians and corporate execs and instead, hand out severe fines and prison sentences. Member of this committee would be comprised of a handful of middle class American’s, chosen from all across the country, various races, age, gender, religions, ethnicities, etc. Committee member cannot make more than $200,000.00 per year/per household. Committee member would report directly to the President, but just like everyone else in Washington, be held accountable by the American public.
The laws of this country, state and local municipalities were established to in part, to seek out, capture and punish crooks who steal from others. If you can sit idle in the Oval office and turn a blind eye to criminals in political offices and corporate board rooms, then you are NOT a man of integrity, honor and accountability and you don’t deserve to run this great country.
Do you want to restore the faith of middle class American’s in our elected and corporate leaders? Then take this bull by the horns, commit to the cause, back it up with the funding, and prove that you are the right person for this job. Until then, faith will be non-existent. As long as there’s no accountability, oversight and jail sentence for crooked politicians and corporate execs, then we are doomed to suffer the wrath of the Same Ole Song & Dance of the last 8 years.
Even a child would know that: when the justice system stacks the odds against the criminals in double breasted suits, take away their golden parachutes, bonuses for “screwing up” and start handing out prison sentences, fines equal to the loses they caused, only then will the temptation is to do wrong be greatly reduced and the faith begins to restore itself.
So, do either of you accept this challenge to establish this Ethics Committee? It’s not an essay question, so a simple yes or no will do.
- Waiting….

Why are you all avoiding that.
the same issues with deregulation with John Mccain’s support and questions of his involvement with the lobbyists “who worked the regulators” like Mccain is working the press now…as he hires those same deregulation lobbyists to write his economic policy…
seems like a GIANT elephant in the room.

The republicans are out in force today only because the rest of America woke up this week to see clearly, for the first time, how out of touch with reality McCain/Palin are. In panic mode, they are back at it, attacking the other candidate in a desperate effort to obscure the weakness of theirs.

I just love watching McCain supporters twist and turn in the wind. They would rather attack Obama than to try and justify McCain’s record and lame campaign. It is very difficult, even for the intellectually challenged citizens, to support a candidate to continually changes his stance on topics, waffles on details concerning policy, and tries to redefine words so it looks like he said something different from what he meant. How stupid can the American people be to support McSame, even when it’s against their own self interest. Four years of McLame and nobody will have anything left. And with the appointing of Federal judges, especially the Supreme Court, he will try and eliminate the right to abortion. Also, McWhine wants to go to war with Iran. And even though he’s admittedly extremely weak on economic theory, he distrusts economists, stating that ‘if you placed all the economists end to end, they wouldn’t reach a conclusion’. Not the guy I want running the country. Sorry McCain, you lost another GOP voter to the Democrats, only that’s where I’ll be for good. They represent my values way more than McCain. Maybe one day the Dems will actually get it right.

Since you are outraged by any suggestion that the 9/11 Commission was a cover-up, why is the fact that some unidentified parties stole over $100 million through the WTC computers while the attacks were taking place not important?

What will John McCain become now ? Where is George Bush in all of this ? Why all this commotion about Sarah Palin ? Has no one heard her talk ?I can see how some Republicans would think that this hacking her computer was done by Obama, because you are IDIOTS. Do you really think that He would sacrifice an election to read her private email. Palin could have had sex with a bear and her followers would still think that she is the best thing to come along since sliced bread. This was probably done by the McCain camp as an excuse to delete her email account so that she doesn’t have to present the evidence in the ” troopergate ” investigation. Judging by that town hall meeting with McCain, Palin is still the straight man in a Las Vegas lounge act.

I am increasingly convinced that McCain’s ignorance actually extends beyond economic issues. The self-professed foreign policy expert couldn’t recognize the name of the president in Spain, our NATO ally. The interviewer was so surprised by his confusing responses to her questions about our relationship with Spain and its president that she forgot her next question. His gaffe is now all over the press in Spain. How embarrassing. Take a listen.

You know, the democrats are completely in favor of more taxes the very wealthy right? Why don’t we start by giving hefty taxes to the people that make the most and deliver the least to society… movie stars, singers and atheletes. These people make millions upon millions just to amuse us. If they donated just HALF their incomes they could feed a small country for years, and still live quite comfortably.

I really am not trying to politicize this anymore than necessary…but in the face of this crisis and money reporters not talking about this…
…why are we not talking about this… as we are about to elect the person to deal with this issue…
with the deregulation that contributed to this
this is from wikipedia… and is footnoted at that site
The Keating Five scandal was prompted by the activities of one particular savings and loan: Lincoln Savings and Loan Association of Irvine, California. Lincoln’s chairman was Charles Keating, who ultimately served five years in prison for his corrupt mismanagement of Lincoln. In the four years since Keating’s American Continental Corporation (ACC) had purchased Lincoln in 1984, Lincoln’s assets had increased from $1.1 billion to $5.5 billion. Such savings and loan associations had been deregulated in the early 1980s, allowing them to make highly risky investments with their depositors’ money, a change of which Keating took advantage. Lincoln’s investments took the form of buying land, taking equity positions in real estate development projects, and buying high-yield junk bonds.
this was the guy John mcCain was vacationing with…like gramm…he was a deregulator lobbyist and now…those same deregulating lobbyists…just wrote his economic plan.

Here’s a message that isn’t mixed: Joe Biden says that paying more taxes is patriotic. From the AP:
Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden says that paying higher taxes is the patriotic thing to do for wealthier Americans.
Biden says he and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama want to “take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people.”
Under the Democrats’ economic plan, people earning more than $250,000 a year would pay more in taxes while those earning less — the vast majority of American taxpayers — would receive a tax cut.
Biden told ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Thursday that, in his words, “it’s time to be patriotic … time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut.”

Re Obama’s plan: it is on his website, clearly spelled out.
It is in his ads on television.
It is in his stump speeches.
You need to exert just a little bit of effort to find out for yourself rather than asking others to tell you.
Compared with McCain’s approach–we’ll get a committee together to study the issues–it is a fully-fleshed out call to arms against an ever weakening economy.
But to at least get you started: it guarantees a tax CUT to 95% of the people (those earning roughly under $250K), a $1000 tax rebate to help with the immediate crisis, a publics work program to improve our country’s deteriorating infrastructure and put Americans back to work, and a look at tightening the regulations the Republicans loosened to keep this economic horror story from every happening again.
Do some research. Obama has a sound plan rather than a lot of platitudes, many stumbles, and misdirected statements about our sound foundation.

From our bedrooms to our telephones, to the Internet to our bodies, the Republicans want to control every aspect of our lives. We must vote every one of them out of office. They have a “me first” mentality and it won’t be changed. It is part of their psyche and they can’t help themselves, because this is how they survive. I am an Independent and have always believed I should vote the person, not the party. But now at 70 years old I have come to realize that in order to act as one, they think as one, all of them having the same eccentric radical views that is destroying my country. I won’t be around much longer, but I’d like to leave this country in the hands of reliable and respected leaders for my grandchildren and great grandchildren. For now, those people are Democrats.

Incredible! I got all this information from Obama’s speeches–all you have to do is clear the republican gunk from your ears and you too can hear his position.
This is incredible: McCain’s straight talk is to form a committee, ignore the problem, issue platitude–I’ve listened to him and have NO IDEA WHAT HIS PLAN FOR THE ECONOMY IS except he knows how to fix it–believe him. What the fudge?
Now you have the near to imply that a clearly articulated economic plan is riddle-based when it is anything but?
Republicans–no wonder they think the news is biased. They can’t think for themselves so respond like lemmings to the sound of their master’s voice, regardless of what the message is.

The problem is our leaders have to have special interest money to campaign. No way around it. As long as it is special interest $’s, the problems will never really be resolved.
Keep voting incumbents out and eventually you will see real change. When we send folks to DC special interest makes them instant millionaire for key votes, etc.
The stock market is in real trouble. Foreign investors are bailing out of American companies and taking large losses. So the billion our government gives to companies are instantly lost to folk who bail out. Not really solving the problems of fraud at the top of companies. Start taking all the assets both in the US and overseas and locking up crooked execs at the top for 25 yrs min and thing will change fast.
Neither candidate have a good plan on any issue. Just trying to get votes and trying to protect special interest behind the scenes. See where a candidate stand by looking at his pass voting record on issues is the only real way to know what his or her goals are for the future-all other ways lies.

Obama’s biggest economic plan is to take money from hard working Americans and put it into the pockets of lazy people all over the country that don’t want to contribute to society and aren’t even citizens of this country. Walk into any emergency room in the state of Florida and you can expect to wade through a flood of illegal aliens wanting free healthcare. Want to fix the broken healthcare in this country? “The Note: McCain Mixing Economic Messages” – More crap from the left.Certainly Obama is guilty as well. But you won’t read about it here. What message is it to the economy after the major AIG failure to have a Hollywood Hootenanny at $2,800 per plate? That shows REAL concern for the economy! None of those attending were hurting, except in their mind “the lights were on but nobody’s home” hehe

Everyone can tell McCain is an Old Timer. If whoever wants to go back to the time where Technology doesn’t exist, love War instead of love Human… Then go for it. Palin is nothing but small town lady with small town mind. She needs to open her eyes to see there are much more beautiful things to see and learn rather than bringing her Christianity to play Politics. Continue to be “Hockey Mom”, because that is what she is good at instead of taking the job that waaay over her capacity.

If Obama’s plan is so plan and easy to project, then he should state it in front of the cameras. I’m sure he has a staff of hundreds of people typing things onto his website… let’s hear his plan from his own lips in front of the whole country. Maybe then he will earn some respect.

tmacioszek, factcheck.org and other independent sites have indicated that most middle class Americans will fare much better under Obama’s tax plan then under McCain’s. If you make more than $250,000 per year then you can expect a tax increase. Just about everyone else will benefit from lower taxes.

Bias-
1- Obamas top two economic advisers , one who was in charge of his VP search team were in charge of Fannie Mae and Freddie mac when they cooked the books, leading to their collapse.
2-Obama is #2 on a list of politicans (mostly democrats) who have accepted lobby money from Freddie Mac, oh and the democaratic congress blocked McCain’s warning in 2005 about these two companies. It’s on the record. No reporting on this anywahere. Open your eyes, anmd stop drinking the Kool-Aid just because you’re reading one side. Obama was never srutinized like this.

One of the issues is the lost of good paying jobs with benefits and high energy cost. How much money does someone in India or Mexico put in the US economy? Every job outsourced weakens our economy. You can not take taxes for a man without a job. Or get lots of tax dollars from someone working without benefits or min wage.
Jobs with great benefits should be the first priority of any candidate.
As long as energy soars there will be not end to our plight.

McCain’s “solution” to the ruined economy? Appoint a Commission. APPOINT A COMMISSION????? Are you sh*tting me?????? Classic inside-the-beltway thinking. Think about how that would roll out: the Commission would debate and deliberate, interview witnesses, take testimony, fly here and there inspecting stuff, and maybe, just maybe, a year later issue some report. What happens in the meantime? This just underscores how dangerously out of touch McCain is with Main St.

So I wouldn’t expect any of you to fathom what it is to know the importance of a good security in times of crisis. The best man to do that is McCain.

Vote Obama – he is going to tax the hell out of all those rich folks and huge evil companies and give the money to those who need it more.
Of course he will have to pass a lot more laws and better regulate those companies because if he doesn’t all those lost profits to taxing may just be passed right back down in prices. And then we won’t be able to afford stuff – so we won’t buy it – then the companies will go out of business – so now there will be more people for the government to support – that’s ok we can just tax those rich folks again – after all they are rich – but then they might just pass on that loss – but maybe the government can run the businesses, that way they can make sure the products are not over-priced and people are paid fair and have a safe place to work and lots of time off.
Godd bless Obama and the government – they will save us all.

To put this country straight is going to require a lot of difficult decisions to be made that are unpopular.
The fed need to cut spending by 30% and raise taxes to get the deficit down. To do this will require removing the military from places far and wide, and perhaps put them along the southern border.
Removal of pork from the budget, why are we subsidizing big oil in the billions and farmers for not growing food when a loaf of bread has risen 300% in the last few years along with gasoline. Cuts in services which no one wants to do but will become necessary.
Only the rich can be taxed because every one else is maxed out now.
Its time to bury the axes over senseless nonsense like gun control and abortion and deal with the real issues that affect everyone and lets start by kicking out all the lobbyist’s and corrupt politicians and for once put this country and its people first.

Democratic Leadership in Congress Abandons America in Time of Crisis!!
You have to hand it to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. Once they decide on a strategy, they stick with it. Bloomberg reports that the Democratic Congress will take action in the face of this economic crisis — by beating a hasty retreat:
The Democratic-controlled Congress, acknowledging that it isn’t equipped to lead the way to a solution for the financial crisis and can’t agree on a path to follow, is likely to just get out of the way.
Lawmakers say they are unlikely to take action before, or to delay, their planned ADJOURNMENTS — Sept. 26 for the House of Representatives, a week later for the Senate. While they haven’t ruled out returning after the Nov. 4 elections, they would rather wait until next year unless Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke, who are leading efforts to contain the crisis, call for help.
One reason, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said yesterday, is that “NO ONE KNOWS WHAT TO DO” at the moment.
The stench from this hypocrisy is overwhelming. Reid, Pelosi, Barack Obama, and every Democrat who could bitterly cling to a microphone over the last four days has spewed invective at the Bush administration, blaming the credit-market meltdown on Bush’s policies. Now, at the height of the crisis, the Democrats admit they haven’t a clue as to how to address it!
In the mean time, let’s be patriotic and pay more taxes, hey Joe?

WHERE IS THE CURRENT PRESIDENT OF THE “united” STATES OF AMERICA?? I didn’t see him at 9PM on TV last night or the night before giving assurances that “MY administration” is doing everything possible to solve this problem. Is he in Crawford or in Air Force One ,looking out the window, flying over Wall Street?? We, as Americans, must remember to look in the mirror to find out who got us into this “mess”. I don’t think the Republicans forced people to enter into risky loans. What we are seeing, whether we have the guts to admit it or not, is a correction to what happens to people and companies that engage in risky financial behavior. Regulation is not the answer. Government regulation will NEVER be good for this country, and most certainly cannot replace personal responsibility, whether financially, morally, or ethically. The belief that the Government “knows better” and will “take care of you” by increasing regulations is a copout because it requires no thought or action by the population. Just let someone else take care of us. NOt the direction I want to see this country go. Don’t go down that path if you truly wish to see this country have the opportunity to flourish. We must learn from your mistakes, and move on by improving our personal responsibilities. Unfortunately, I see neither candidate as one who will truly help move our country in that direction. Anyone else out there for President?

If you cut taxes for 95% of the country, and raise taxes for 5% then how do you make ends meet? If you over-tax corporations then you will see massive layoffs to offset the expenses, causing higher unemployment and requiring even more government bailouts. But instead of banks, it will be people we’ll have to bail out.

If you over-tax corporations then you will see massive layoffs to offset the expenses, causing higher unemployment and requiring even more government bailouts. But instead of banks, it will be people we’ll have to bail out.”
First, you have to understand Obama’s WHOLE economic plan, not just 5% of it.
Then, you would realize that neither candidate will pay for what they want to spend, BUT OBAMA WILL PAY FOR ALL BUT 80 Billion, WHILE MCCAIN WILL PAY FOR ALL BUT 300 BILLION. Obama wins.
If you raise taxes on the 5% of americans that are at the top of the income charts by 1-2%, IT WILL PAY FOR MORE THEN THE AMOUNT LOST BY REDUCING THE BOTTOM 95% BY 4%. Also, Iraq is wasteing 10 BILLION a month while the coutry of Iraq has hundreds of billions of dollars in surplus to rebuild themselves.
The corporations already have the highest tax in the world, BUT THEN DO NOT PAY TAXES BECAUSE OF LOOPHOLES FROM THE PREVIOUS GOVERNMENT. Hence, economy crumbles. Obama simply wants to make it fair to all corporations, flat tax rates instead of the richest corporations paying the most for lawyers who simply right off ALL TAXES.
If you don’t understand this, you need to read the policies, and see for youself that OBAMA’S ECONOMIC PLAN MAKES SENSE AND MCCAIN’S IS THE ONE THAT WILL FURTHER BREAK THE BANK.

If we can put up with a million or more illegals in here just what are they doing?
If the Islamic fundamentalists want to come in they can just walk across the rio grande like everyone else.
As far as our military are concerned they are doing a great job under extremely difficult circumstances where if you are involved in a fire fight and shoot someone you might be tried for murder. Whats up with that ? Where is the support from Bush on this one. Ever hear him or bigmac stand up for these guys.
In a capitalist society we would let all these banks go down after all if you want de regulation thats fine but if you make stupid mistakes dont expect the public to pick up the tab.
This whole situation has caused us to go 10 trillion in debt 10,000,000,000,000 just think about it.

Obama has a track record of a knee-jerk call to form bipartisan commissions. As Fox points out and as Francis Beckwith documents, Obama has called for exactly the same kind of panels for:
Social Security (November 2007)
Torture (September 2007)
War crimes (August 2008)
Wall Street (April 2008)
So let’s get this straight. Obama called for a bipartisan commission on Wall Street oversight FIVE months ago. John McCain now AGREES with that suggestion. After McCain agrees, Obama says it’s nothing more than a political dodge? That’s far worse than John Kerry’s famous flip-flop on the $87 billion in war funding in 2004; it’s an admission that Obama was never serious in the first place.
Thanks for the clarification, Senator Obama. We’ll get back to ya.

I haven’t heard any sort of plan mentioned by Obama yet. Well, except for CHANGE, CHANGE, CHANGE. What is this “CHANGE” he speaks of so often? Anybody have any insight on that? If so, please send it my way. My guess is that there will be higher taxes for small business. Seems like a CHANGE to me. Not one that I want though. Not as a small business owner myself. This will eventually result in higher amounts of layoffs. Which will eventually result in an economy in worse shape than it already is. At eh Dem. National Convention, Mr. Obama mentioned that he will lower Capitol Gains taxes for small businesses. NEWS FLASH, small businesses DON’T HAVE CAPITOL GAINS TAXES, you genius! If he had more experience than the 1-1.5 years he’s actually “served” in the Senate, he might know that (the other 2 years he’s spent campaigning). Then again, he did vote “present” a lot, so maybe he wouldn’t. I’m not going to stand up and say that McCain – Palin will be immediate savors, but they will certainly do a MUCH better job than the frauds Obama – Biden would do.
It’s nice to have V.P. that is running that gives kudos to Hillary of all people, saying she is better qualified than he is. That makes both Biden and Obama (for actually picking that joke for a running mate) look like goofs. Biden has even said himself in regard to Obama, “This is no time for on the job training.” Yet Obama went and chose him anyway to boost his campaigns “experience”. Obama already has a nice, long history of choosing some real questionable people to surround himself with. Bill Ayers. Jeremiah Wright. Richard Fuld (CEO of Lehman Brothers) along with a list of other top execs from Lehman Brothers. CHANGE? Seems to me that he has more to do with the current economic CHANGE than McCain does. Hmmm …. They’ll be more CHANGE alright. A CHANGE for the worse, mark my word. Especially if he keeps these supporters and advisers around.

When the national anthem is being sung, various participants are shown mugging for the camera. When the camera gets to Howard, he says: ” ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ is going on. I don’t celebrate this [expletive]. I’m black.”
Howard goes on to make a difficult-to-discern comment that includes a reference to Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Nobody but you racist rightwingers bought that book. It became a “best seller” because a few radical rightwingers bought up huge quantities to push the book to the top. Those books are probably now gathering dust and getting chewed up by rats in storage units somewhere.

Since what that idiot Howard said was unintelligible, just how do you know what he actually said about Obama? I heard the tape. For all I know he said that ” That MF Obama is a traitor to his race”. Or do you have some special powers that allows you to know what Howard actually said or was thinking? Finally, as much as you hate to admit it, the First Amendment to the US constitution provides for the freedom of speech. Even speech we don’t agree with. Or has Bush taken that away as well while we weren’t looking?

“Michelle Obama is holding an economic round-table with working women in Charlotte, and will speak at a rally in Greensboro later Thursday.”
Let’s see maybe she can explain to all of us working women how to double our salaries in one easy step.
In 2005 Obama’s wife Michelle who worked for the University of Chicago Hospital gets her salary more than doubled, from $121,910 to 316,962.
And then for some reason and next thing you know, in 2006, Obama gives The University of Chicago Hospital a huge $1 million dollar earmark???
Was Michelle’s increase in salary a finder’s fee of 12.19% of the million dollars?

The Bush administration has been trying to rein in Fannie and Freddie for 5 years but
Barney Frank, head of the banking committee, has blocked them at every turn. Top dems
have been getting huge campaign donations from Fannie and Freddie for years (Barak is #2).
Investigate congress their job is to regulate. Bush can’t do anything if they won’t pass
the laws.
Comment from Boston Globe:
“This is not an issue the Democrats will want to engage. Which candidate foresaw the credit crisis and tried to do something about it? As it turns out, John McCain did — and partnered with three other Senate Republicans to reform the government’s involvement in lending three years ago, after an attempt by the Bush administration died in Congress two years earlier. McCain spoke forcefully on May 25, 2006, on behalf of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005.
Even before that… BARNEY FRANK, NYT 9/11/03: “These two entities — Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — are not facing any kind of financial crisis,” said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. “The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.” FRANK WAS RESPONDING TO: The Bush administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago. Under the plan, disclosed at a Congressional hearing today, a new agency would be created within the Treasury Department to assume supervision of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored companies that are the two largest players in the mortgage lending industry. The new agency would have the authority, which now rests with Congress, to set one of the two capital-reserve requirements for the companies. It would exercise authority over any new lines of business. And it would determine whether the two are adequately managing the risks of their ballooning portfolios. The plan is an acknowledgment by the administration that oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — which together have issued more than $1.5 trillion in outstanding debt — is broken. A report by outside investigators in July concluded that Freddie Mac manipulated its accounting to mislead investors, and critics have said Fannie Mae does not adequately hedge against rising interest rates.

McCain has tacked to the left of his Democratic opponent. This is what I meant about his emotional, kneejerk reactions to situations.
He isn’t just tempering his Republican message, he’s abandoning it and jealously seeking to prove he can be more liberal than anyone.
Consider he’s now against greed and for more regulations. He wants the government to “fix” Wall Street. He proposes a bailout for the auto industry because if the government can afford to bail out rich bankers and insurers, it can afford to bail out labor. He wants to nationalize more corporations to prevent their boards from giving away more golden parachutes.
Give this guy a crisis and watch him emotionally bounce off the walls – the only question is which wall he bounces off first – the one to the right or the one to the left.

Did any of us ever really believe we’d see in our lifetimes a Republican nominee for president say stuff like this?
Posted by: Paul | September 18, 2008, 11:12 am 11:12 am
Oh here we go…As if Obama (or Jesus, as some would call him)could change this! LOL
It doesn’t take much insight to have seen this coming for a long time!
Just look how companies were building crappy houses and filling their pockets with money as fast as they could. There is no doubt they knew the well was going to dry up soon or later. That’s okay with them…They just gave themselves huge salaries and hid the money in their own personal accounts. Ahhh…too bad, they need to file for bankruptcy.
Then you have investors who have been sitting on their butts for years and investing your monies into anything that APPEARS to be doing well. Pretty much most businesses were doing well, so they figured just “diversify” and things will be okay. Listen…there was no REAL research into these investments!
These investment companies got caught with their pants down. Was this supposed to be insured by the government? NO! Now, all of a sudden, people are crying because they lost money. Waaaaaah! Investments are a RISK! It’s the same risk as a person investing in a street vendor selling $10 Rolex watches.
The government can’t watch over every stupid thing people do.
With regards to companies moving overseas, if you can’t make a profit here from over taxing (34%-39%) and having to pay an army of attorneys to find loopholes, what would you do? Would you want to maximize your profit or choke to death on tax and attorney fees to be a good American?
The solution is a lower flat tax rate for corporations…No loopholes! Apply a hefty tariff rate to overseas American companies importing to the US.
Stop the frickin’ bailouts! Companies will die and companies will rise. If companies want bailed out, have a telethon and see who willing to throw money at them. If you Democrats feel so gracious, you can call in your hefty donations!
McCain/Palin ’08

I’m a 60 year-old white Christian male who grew up poor in deep East Texas.
And so you might assume I would be a rabidly conservative Republican…
But you would be wrong.
I support Obama because he (and Biden) are the only candidates who have a clue about the nature of the economic and structural changes the country desperately needs.
Beginning in the mid-60′s, I saw first-hand how the Republicans gladly assimilated Southern whites who felt they were abandoned when the mainstream Democrats finally got behind the civil-rights movement.
Wrapping themselves in the flag and so-called “family” issues, they quietly continued the legacy of prejudice and a separate – but definately not equal! – American society (only when it comes to religion do they believe there is only one “true” America… their beliefs, of course)
I admired McCain back when he was a thorn in the side of these neo-con crazies. But now he seems to have become one of them!
We had all better wake up and get beyond our petty prejudices and for once vote for the most competent choice, before it’s too late.
I would rather elect a really smart person with the ability to make critical decisions based on the facts, than one who continues to make poor, un-informed decisions. Obama’s first decision was Joe Biden. McCain’s was Sarah Palen (perhaps a nice person, but Vice President? That’s scary!)
I suppose that experience making bad decisions is still a type of “experience”…
Just not exactly the kind we need!

At the 1996 mid-term elections the voters of Dallas county threw out EVERY Republican running for office. EVERY ONE. From district attorney to dog catcher. Why bother, if you don’t know now after 19 months of campaigning, you’re not interested in knowing. You’re just trolling the forums with the same tired rhetoric over and over because your candidate is way out of touch.
Like I said, I thought you McCain people were supposed to be tough. Far from it.

And what’s Obama’s message: TAX, TAX, TAX….
—
And your Candidate’s message: Borrow and spend like there’s no tomorrow leading to what we now can call: Bungle and Bailout economics.
That’s why we’re here, you want to spend money we don’t have, Barack wants to spend money that’s REAL.
A tax and Spend Democrat, or Borrow and bailout republican, which will save this country more money in the long run? Hint: It ain’t debt

Emily: John McCain also said:
“I didn’t decide to run for president to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to be president…In truth, I’d had the ambition for a long time.”
So there you have it. He’s a guy just trying to win. And I guess now he thinks he has to tack to the left of the Democratic Party to do that.
But it will be interesting to see the long-time ramnifications of McCain’s emotional, kneejerk tacking left.
Will Republican party members support his arguments about fixing Wall Street and offering bailouts for auto workers because we’re bailing out bankers? Will Republican party members support doing what they would have to (nationalizing corporations) to meet McCain’s promises to end golden parachutes?
And if Republicans go along with this stuff now, what impact will that have on the future of the party?
You guys need to understand this is bigger than a flip flop on drilling, etc. McCain is trying to take his candidacy into some truly uncharted waters. Will the party follow?

More interesting than the Obama v Clinton debates on judgment against experience; far more interesting than a Caribou hunting governor from Alaska; perhaps even more interesting than the broader questions about how much racism and sexism remain in our political discourse.

The Democrat favorite, and the singularly most important word in their vocabulary. Let’s examine in the real world what effect calling somebody a liar actually has: It damages the opponents reputation and unilaterally discredits their statements.
But here is what it does in the political world: The attraction for the Democrats spewing out this simple accusation is, that it requires no argument, no facts and no efforts of persuasion whatsoever. It simply requires one word that says it all. “I am a Democrat and you are a Liar.”

This stands in stark contrast to Republicans mantra that “Obama is a Marxist and/or Socialist” and “Obama is a Muslim”. Simply a statement with no facts behind it.

Bill sez: “The AIG bailout was not for the good old folks in the US. It was for foreign investors to recoup some of their money. ”
I agree with you except for one point. If we hadn’t bailed out AIG and let the foreign governments lose their investments they would stop buying T-bills. That would be BAD for good old folks in the US. How else would our government pay for the $417 billion budget deficit this year? New taxes? Hardly. We can’t be expected to PAY for the things we get from government, especially when we can pass the bill on to our children and grandchildren ad infinitum. Also, how would they pay for the bailout of Fannie/Freddie, AIG, et. al. Our government, Repub and Dem, have sold this country down the river. Our old enemies, the Russians and the Chinese, along with our new enemies in the middle East, have us by the proverbial short hairs and they know it. They hold the lions share of that massive national debt we’ve run up. But I feel so much more secure now….

“While I am encouraged by the senator’s evolution, I must also appeal to him to issue a “cease and desist” plea to the battalions of his sympathizers – who have been threatening me with death and worse in the days since my article appeared. – Amer Taheri
IN Monday’s Post, I discussed how Barack Obama, during his July trip, had asked Iraqi leaders not to finalize an agreement vital to the future of US forces in Iraq – and how the effect of such a delay would be to postpone the departure of the US from Iraq beyond the time Obama himself calls for.

Why has this story run in the Post and FoxNews? Because it’s simply not true. Oh, but then all news sources around the world, except for the Post and Fox News, are Communist Obama front organizations, right?

Something taken from the CNN website today….
“Obama’s tax plan would increase taxes in 2009 on the wealthiest 20 percent of households, while offering tax cuts for the other 80 percent. The largest increases would be on the top 1 percent of earners, according to analysis by the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan research group whose staff of experts includes former economic advisers to the White House and Congress under both Republicans and Democrats.
By comparison, the Tax Policy Center analysis says McCain would offer tax cuts across the board. Those at the top end of the scale would get the biggest percentage cuts under McCain, while households with the lowest incomes would receive the largest percentage cuts under Obama’s plan.”
Once again, the rich get richer. But I suppose that the Tax Policy Center is yet another Commie Obama front organization….

Infact, he thinks we’re doing well .”the economy is solid and the fundamentals sound”.What has he been snorting or drinking? He couldn’t be living here or talking about our plight. You don’t have to have much brain to see what is happening everywhere in our country around us.Yes, he says he is a maverick . He truly sees things differently. To him our economy isn’t failing, hasn’t failed ,it is succeeding, the spiral downwards is upwards to him.The crisis on wall street ,the worst since the 1929 depression is just a blib and nothing serious. What a joker. He and Bush created this quagmire, sunk us into it and now tell us to vote for them again. Somebody is crazy here. The American people still have their marbles. We got fooled twice through lies and cheating. We are not going to allow it to happen again this time. McCain now says what we need at these trying times is regulatory oversight, which would have cubbed the free wheeling ,sleaze, greed and out right thievry on wall street. One thing he forgets is that he calls himself the champion of deregulations. He and his chief economic adviser, Senator Graham, the author of the “Americans have mental depression with the economy and are a nation of whinners,”dismantled all the previous deregulations in place that could have prevented the present economic crisis, the very thing Senator McCain now wants back, after the damage has already been done.Jonn, it is a bit too late.Think things through first before you say anything. You can’t be shooting from your hip and change your mind later. This is not the kind of change America wants and needs now.Put country first, be honest with youself ,ask youself whether the country has been moving in the right direction the last eight years. If you can’t see anything wrong then you are not capable to get us out of this mess.A good leader must be able to see when something is wrong and fix it.Apparently you can’t.These times aren’t the time for lip service but for intelligent, thoughtful, consequential good planning and management. The old ways of the end justifies the means , lies cheating amd smearing do not help America. You were a POW, and even prepared to sacrifice for the Nation.Be a true patriot now. Your country is hurting badly now.It does not need a failed ideology, a corrupt policy. It needs a true new change. New fresh blood and ideas to get us out of this sinkhole.Do you know how we got there or who got us there? You must.Because you took part in creating it. You did notthig to stop it.In fact, you supported it 90%.How can you now say it was poor judgment and mismanagement that got us into ?A poor judgment, you voted for nine out of ten times? This clearly brings home what we can expect of you.Bad judgment!”I was for them but have now changed my mind”When do you really mean what you say ?I am surprised, you do have such an ever changing mind as an Aviator. What is course is the real one?Is there any judgment you have made you haven’t changed your mind on yet ? “I am for first it and Iam against later” would not be tolerated a second in the business world .No wonder one of your own chief economic spokepersons says you could not run a corporation. She was telling you and us the truth. She is trying to spare America further debacle. In other words ,what she was saying is that, if 90% of the same policies brought on this disaster ,brace yourselves for what 100% will bring us.That lady ,your chief economic should not have been fired . She is the true patriot. She is saying “Country first!” She doesn’t want us to go through the same misery four more years.Even she sees the country is in trouble and has been going in the wrong direction the last eigth years. So John ,howcome do you alone think everything is alright and the economic funfamentals sound?Remember, the American worker still remains the most hard working and productive worker in the world while this melt down is taking place. You are right. You said again and again you don’t understand economics. You are now proving it.Only strong ,smart, visionary and creative policies can get us out of this mess you help creat. Where were you when it was happening?Did you understand what Bush was doing and you were voting for 90% of the time? What were you thinking ?What jugdgment did you exercise during all these voting?. Two things are clear here.Either you did not understand what it meant all along or did not care. Either way is a sign of bad judgment. America deserves better. It will not tolerate the old mediocrity anymore. We have to get out of the economic morases. We need a new change that brings back hope and vitality. We shall not let the American dream die. We will change this in November when Obama is in the White house

Not much mention of ‘Ol Slick Willy and what he did during his two terms in office. I think a lot of what is happening right now is due to his efforts (or lack there of) while in office. Perhaps that’s what you’re referring to Jim when you said, “We got fooled twice through lies and cheating.” As for McCain voting in favor of Bush, at least he is voting for something! Your precious “Chosen One” has stood for NOTHING. “Present.” Pah! Is that even a voting option??

Every voice heard from the candidates are based on political maneuvering. Which candidate is the best?
Seek the truth? Only thinks we know for sure is their past voting records on issues. If you eat beans all the time, i bet you like beans. Same with the voting records. Vote for the war all the time is a good indicator you love and support the war.

I have to correct you samhiguchi – the British press are NOT raking up Obama’s so called ‘dirty past’ they are actually supportive of him, giving greater coverage to his campaign than Mccain’s (which is hardly surprising). As a British person I can say we Brits are routing for Obama!!

The issues and the candidate votes or not votes on the issues be explored on national tv as each explains why they did or did not vote on issues that are most important to the majority of Americans.
Then you could decide intelligently, not with you feelings.

McCain and Frau Palin keeping harping about how they are for “smaller govenment” and will “reduce the size of government”. While that sounds good to me (and I’m a dreaded liberal) I have yet to hear how they plan to do that. Let’s look at some budget realities. Where is our money being spent today? Defense and Homeland Security – 22%, Social Security – 21%, Medicare/Medicaid – 21%, Debt interest – 9%, so called “safety net” programs – 9%. So what part of the government do McCain/Palin plan to cut? Interest on the debt? Can’t do that. Defense? A republican? Surely you jest. Social Security? I don’t think so. McCain has said repeatedly that SS is off limits and he’d lose the senior vote. Medicare/medicaid. No way. Medicare benefits the seniors as well. Medicaid? Maybe, given Republican’s penchant for throwing needy people under the bus but not unless the they want to look like heartless robber barons. Safety net? Ha! And cancel one of Reagan’s initiatives? That leaves 18% of the budget for everything else people; Depts. of commerce, agriculture, IRS, interior, justice, labor, education, state, environment, energy, transportation…. the list goes on. The fact of the matter is that McCain and Frau Palin cannot impact the size of the federal government in any meaningful way without touching the so-called “third rails” of politics and they have no intention of doing so. It would be political suicide and they are, after all, first and foremost politicians. And please, don’t say that they will make government “more efficient”. Bush tried that line when he trumpeted his business acumen as a candidate and we all know how that turned out. And, as Carly Fiorina said, neither McCain or Frau Palin have any business sense at all.

Smaller is ok as long as laws are enforced from criminal activities in big business and government.
Bush and Cheney have changed illegal to legal. No upholding of laws.
We may need bigger government to enforce the laws of the land and take back our laws.
No one monitoring these large companies has created a mess of bailouts that will take yrs of good government to work out.

Bush plan of smaller government has failed. So, McCain want less? Common sense is not so common.

Its interesting to see that among the comments are people that are trying to come up with solutions and deal with the real issues and others who are largely republican are out their just to keep up the same old bs about lipstick.
for those who are republican consider that the largest move away from capitalism has occurred and is occurring under a republican president.
It would be a good thing if the world will not loan the feds anymore money because maybee we can get back to our roots and grow our own food, keep our own people employed and stop borrowing money to subsidize everyone else.
Lets let AIG go down and the banks to and if necessary wall st and wipe the slate clean and start again.

“Lets let AIG go down and the banks to and if necessary wall st and wipe the slate clean and start again.”
Man, that’s harsh! Talk about scorched earth. I have visions of we city-dwellers (80% of the US) being driven into the countryside a la the Khmer Rouge for re-eduction on how to grow a victory garden. :-)

Yes it is harsh but you know its time for the bankers and investors to realize that if you invest in something thats bad, or have the wrong people in charge you are going to loose money. Why should the taxpayer bail them out, after all I dont see them pushing a lot of money in taxes when the going was good . Did You.?
In real terms in a capitalist society someone else will buy up the bits that work and it will go on. Why should we saddle the taxpayer with the losses ?
I’m tired of the corporate hand outs its like Robin Hood in reverse where we take from the poor and give to the rich.
to sort this country out will require a significant cut in goverment spending and an increase in taxes on those that can afford it and in this Obama is right.
Why should the taxpayer subsidize every thing including paying farmer for not growing food and the oil companies when our own seniors cant afford medication which is 30% of the price in countries abroad for the same product from the same manufacturer.
Frankly republican or democrat both parties should be ashamed at bringing this great country to its knees.
