The Pork Wars, Continued

In Albuquerque, N.M., this evening, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin hit back at Sen. Barack Obama’s comments earlier today assailing her record on earmarks compared to her anti-pork crusader posturing.

"Now just today, our opponent brought up earmarks, and frankly I was surprised that he raised the subject. I didn’t think he’d want to go there," Palin said, per ABC News’ Imtiyaz Delawala. "Our opponent has requested nearly $1 billion in earmarks in just three years. That’s about a million dollars, about a million dollars for every working day. Just wait until President McCain puts a stop to that."

Palin claimed she "championed reform of earmark spending by Congress, and I told the Congress thanks but no thanks on that ‘Bridge to Nowhere,’" she said, ommiting mention that she’d campaigned for governor supporting the bridge. "If our state wanted a bridge, we’d build it ourselves."

Palin said, "We did cut back earmarks in our state and I’m ready to help John McCain end earmarks once and for all; that secret system, eleventh hour, behind-closed-doors, no public scrutiny earmark system that is broken. We will end that."

She did not go into the hundreds of millions of dollars in earmarks she has sought as governor and as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, nor the fact in 2001 and 2002, McCain — a legit pork-buster — cited three of the pork projects she sought as "objectionable."

“I told the Congress thanks but no thanks on that ‘Bridge to Nowhere’”
But I took the money anyway and used it to build an access road to that nonexistant Bridge to Nowhere.
Talk about Wasteful Spending

And she used a teleprompter to do it.
She’s not ready and everybody knows it now. She’s not even doing Chris Wallace tomorrow. If she can’t play softball, she is not ready for Hardball.
McCain-Palin. Still hiding the 1984 Miss Alaska runner up from the press on Day 8.
McCain-Palin. Absolutely Not Ready on Day One.
Especially without the prompter running.

Obama’s point was that her words should matter… She has lied so much already, and this is while she is scripted. Wait until the Press Conference!! Of course you’ll be waiting a long, long time.

Forget a “countdown clock” for when she’ll do a serious interview (with no telepromptered speech pre-written by the McCain campaign)… I want a countdown clock on when she’ll stop lying.

Posted by: Lisa | September 6, 2008, 11:05 pm 11:05 pm

Let’s see she repeats the bridge lie.
When did she champion earmark reform?
Does she mean this?
“We just talked about earmark reform and how it’s going to happen,” Palin said in February, shortly after she attended a breakfast for Republican governors featuring McCain as the keynote speaker.”
Palin fighting earmark reform since Feb 2008!
“We did cut back earmarks in our state”
She requested $200M in earmarks 6 moths ago.
“that secret system, eleventh hour, behind-closed-doors, no public scrutiny earmark system that is broken. We will end that”
You mean the system that has become much more transparent under Coburn-Obama and will continue to grow more transparent as those two Senators continue to work together to expand that law?

Jake, you get paid to be a journalist and I dont, so take my advice with a grain of salt. When you wrote this:
Palin claimed she “championed reform of earmark spending by Congress, and I told the Congress thanks but no thanks on that ‘Bridge to Nowhere,’” she said, ommiting mention that she’d campaigned for governor supporting the bridge.
your comment on what she omitted mention of does not address the point of her comment. The point was that she supposedly told congress thanks but no thanks – which is a falsehood, not simply selective misrepresentation of her position in favor or against the bridge.
I suggest the following:
Palin claimed she “championed reform of earmark spending by Congress, and I told the Congress thanks but no thanks on that ‘Bridge to Nowhere,’” she said, despite no evidence that she told congress anything of the sort.

By the way, Senator Obama also sponsored the “Transparency and Integrity in Earmarks Act” in the U.S. Senate in 2006 precisely to end “that secret system, eleventh hour, behind-closed-doors, no public scrutiny earmark system” Palin spoke of (or rather, I should say, the McCain campaign speechwriter spoke of).

Oh, I see, you only slam those who have to work within the earmark system currently in place, until they can change it as they do desire. As apposed to slamming those who work within the earmark system and have no intent to change it like Obama. Has Obama ever fought against or turned down an earmark that worked for him? Jake, I think you can do better. I think if you just give it a little more effort, you could be more biased then you already are.Come on! Make ABC proud!

She will be a GOP Presidential Nomenee in 2012, Do you think hillary can beat her then?
After 4 years of VP experience and popularity, Palin will beat hillary handily.
Maybe you want to cut your hands at that time.
Be smart.

This case is simple. Obama and Biden are less likely to reduce earmarks. McCain and Palin are highly likely to reduce earmarks, to such a degree that beltway Washington considers it a grave threat. You will see the talking heads at their shrillest over the next 60 days. It doesn’t really matter to me. I’m going to vote for Obama because I’d like to see a Democrat appoint the next Supreme Court justices. After an Obama administration, though, the Democrats will not likely hold the top seat for the next 24 years thereafter, so lets hope he appoints younger justices.

—————————
Thats just out and out wrong.
In 2006, the senator teamed up with fellow Arizona senator Jon Kyl (R) to funnel $10 million toward the University of Arizona for an academic center named after the late Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist. Even Arizona lawmaker, Rep. Jeff Flake (R), said he was planning to “lean against the measure.” The National Taxpayers Union, another traditional McCain ally, questioned why the senator was making federal taxpayers foot the bill for the center.

88% of the time John McCain votes against pork/earmark spending. They rated Obama voting 18% of the time against pork/earmarks. I think Obama will have to answer this.

Although I actually expect to see McCain run again in 4 years if he is somehow, albeit improbably, elected. I do think Hillary will be able to beat him, unless he keeps his word about pork reduction. A guy who was a POW for 5 1/2 years learned to survive on next to nothing, so I think he may do well without the pork and other creature comforts of beltway Washington. We’ll see, though. He is starting to tell a convincing story. I don’t plan to vote for him, but I will not feel bad if he wins this time out. I would ultimately like to see Hillary as President. We need a good Democrat to appoint the right Supreme Court justices. If its not Obama now, it’ll definitely need to be Hillary.

Palin increased taxes on the producers of oil and gas in Alaska. She did not increase taxes on Alaskans. Alaskans don’t pay any statewide taxes. There may be local taxes (such as sales or property taxes). Further, she actually got rid of the tax on studded tires (a statewide tax), the motor fuel tax (a statewide tax on motor, aviation, and marine fuel), and reduced other fees that Alaskans pay for state services.
Frankly, as an Alaskan, none of the choices appeal to me. Both candidates for President oppose opening our state to resource development, every chance McCain, and now Palin, get they throw our state under the bus by making obscene comments about what is considered a community priority for a city in Southeast Alaska. How would you feel if your town was blasted in the media as “No Where?” By the way…the bridge would go to the where the airport is and would open up land for development (the town is backed against a mountain and is on an island thus not very long, so the only way to go is out and over to the next island…) So the question that remains for most Alaskans is which of the candidates hates Alaska the most?
In regards to Palin doing interviews or press conferences, come on…Biden has had what 35 years to prepare for this moment in the spotlight? Obama has been a celebrity candidate for 2 years? You give her grief about 8 days?

I am supposed to believe in the change from Obama who has been in Congress 4 years as part of the the biggest do nothing Democrat controlled contgress ever and never has seen or at least stated he saw a problem with earmarks. OK, why are we even talking about earmarks? LOOK AT THE NUMBERS, PEOPLE!!!
The amazing thing that we just don’t get is that earmarks represent a TEENY fraction of the budget. McCain’s enhanced tax cuts for the rich and all the other crap he wants will cost around a trillion bucks, and if he thinks he’s going to offset it by stopping earmarks, his mind really IS deteriorating.
Like everything with McCain, it’s just another gimmick to get himself elected.

Obama has been working on earmark reform. Palin just claims it when she has done very little about earmarks.

Bill W: do you want bureaucrats to decide where funds are directed to? Or do you want elected officials to decide that?
It seems to me a lot of people do not really understand earmark spending.
Goverment has a certain amount of money which has to be directed. You can direct that money without any earmarks to for instance ‘Transportion projects’ and than Transportation can direct that money to fund several projects of its choosing.
With earmarks, the *same* amount of money is sent to Transportation projects, but now it are elected officials who say: “Part of this money has to be spent on …”. That’s an earmark.

According to a special tonight on CNN, Obama considered himself the rock star speaker in 2004 at the previous Democrat convention. This was stated by an Obama supporter. It was also stated he would use his friends one day for political gain, then stab them in the back the next week for political gain again. He did not have many friends in the Illinois State Senate when he left. He caressed corrupt and criminal people to forward his political career. He is a corrupt guy from the Chicago Political Machine wanting to win the election for his own political power for Obama, not for the voters. He refuses to be honest in his speeches or with the press. It is all about Obama’s selfish ambition.

Posted by: Ryan C | September 6, 2008, 11:49 pm 11:49 pm

The only problem with Earmark Spending is that Congress-members have used that spending as “Pay to Play” Scheme.
A contractor promises a congressmember to donate money to a personal ‘charity’ fund, if that congressmember manages to slip an earmark for a certain project into a bill.

Bruce: From an Obama supporter: Wow, thoughtful comment, which is kind of rare on this blog. I’d give you a plus if Tapper had ratings. I love Alaska and the Yukon, and it’s good to hear from a local.
Alaska’s infrastructure and economic issues are really distinct from the rest of the country, and I don’t think taxation issues are comparable. For me, the bridge wasn’t much of an issue as much as the patronage around it.
I don’t give a rip about taxes, which I pay happily in order to live in the greatest country on Earth. My concern is less with Palin (although I have significant ones) than with McCain’s decision making process. This has revealed him to be dangerously impulsive, a gambler at the craps table (which he loves). If it were up to him, we’d be shooting Russians in Georgia right now. This is a real pattern with him.

When you’re poor, it can be hard to pay the bills. When you’re rich, it’s hard to keep track of all the bills that need paying. It’s a lesson Cindy McCain learned the hard way when NEWSWEEK raised questions about an overdue property-tax bill on a La Jolla, Calif., property owned by a trust that she oversees. Mrs. McCain is a beer heiress with an estimated $100 million fortune and, along with her husband, she owns at least seven properties, including condos in California and Arizona. [...]
Shortly after NEWSWEEK inquired about the matter, the McCain aide e-mailed a receipt dated Friday, June 27, confirming payment by the trust to San Diego County in the amount of $6,744.42. County officials say the trust still owes an additional $1,742 for this year, an amount that is overdue and will go into default July 1. Told of the outstanding $1,742, the aide said: “The trust has paid all bills shown owing as of today and will pay all other bills due

John McCain has stated he will veto every bill with ear marks and make the people famous. Well he’s had 26 years to speak up and make them famous and done nothing all this time. But then most of the ear marks up till 2006 were Republican so I can see why he hesitated, party loyalty, you know not wanting to bad mouth his own people.

Mary: Coming from an Obama supporter, I agree – Alaska deserves its earmarks. Palin axed the bridge when it was clear the feds wouldn’t fund it, so she’s taking bogus credit. Whatever. The whole debate about earmarks is stupid. If we eliminated them tomorrow, it wouldn’t begin to make a dent in the budget. Something like 2 months in Iraq…

Posted by: robert | September 7, 2008, 12:14 am 12:14 am

The results are simple: Democratic presidents have consistently higher economic growth and consistently lower unemployment than Republican presidents. If you add in a time lag, you get the same result. If you eliminate the best and worst presidents, you get the same result. If you take a look at other economic indicators, you get the same result. There’s just no way around it: Democratic administrations are better for the economy than Republican administrations.
Skeptics offer two arguments: first, that presidents don’t control the economy; second, that there are too few data points to draw any firm conclusions. Neither argument is convincing. It’s true that presidents don’t control the economy, but they do influence it — as everyone tacitly acknowledges by fighting like crazed banshees over every facet of fiscal policy ever offered up by a president.
The second argument doesn’t hold water either. The dataset that delivers these results now covers more than 50 years, 10 administrations, and half a dozen different measures. That’s a fair amount of data, and the results are awesomely consistent: Democrats do better no matter what you measure, how you measure it, or how you fiddle with the data.

EMILY’s List was perhaps the first to sing out about an opportunity rather than a threat from Palin, pointing to a poll it had done a couple of days after McCain selected the Alaskan moose huntress.
The survey of 800 women likely voters said Obama holds an 11-point lead on McCain, and that women Hillary voters in particular flooded the Illinois senator’s way.
Before the Palin pick, Obama led McCain by 44 points among female Clinton backers. That jumped to a 54-point lead afterward, 75% to 21%, the poll said.

Clinton got lucky enough to be in the White House when the dotcom boom hit and raised the entire economic sea. A Republican congress kept his lefty inclinations in check. Too bad they couldn’t keep his other “inclinations” in check. Bush inherited the dotcom crash, and helped turn the economy around with tax cuts, along with Fed cuts. Sure, cheap money had its own troubles, and now there are lots of people whining that the evil mortgage brokers came to their rented door with buckets of seemingly free money and evilly enticed them into buying mcmansions. A free market conservative knows that when a deal just sounds too good to pass up, caveat emptor.
If you had property, or money invested in 2000, you made a pile of dough. It might have been an even bigger pile a couple of years ago, but most people I know, even the rabid leftys bemoaning the “worst economy ever” have more money, better jobs, and more secure futures than they did in 2000.

Palin may not have attracted clinton supporters but she sure attracted lots of conservatives, especially women. Mccain will not be able to win without conservatives. Palin has help so much with putting the conservatives behind mccain. That’s much more important than clinton’s supporters.
Obama is a wimp. He looks less of a man comparing to his own wife, a woman, hillary and an old man mccain. Now, we’ll see Palin more of a pit bull than he is. I just got done looking at The Obama campaign website and after looking at his laundry list under issues “Are YOU CRAZY”. Who is gonna pay for all this crap he wants to do, the tooth fairy? Santa? This guy brings change alright, RADICAL CHANGE. He will single handedly force business to head over sea, ruin Health Care, and create worthless government jobs and social programs that we can’t afford. We already can’t afford the ones we got now. He wants to end world poverty at taxpayer expense buy funding it with 150 billion dollars. The list goes on and on. He would be a reckless commander in chief that Putin and our other enemies would certainly exploit. Wonder who they would vote for? He thinks he’s running for the World presidency. Are we world citizen’s now, and not Americans? Why was he giving speeches to rallies in Germany? America can’t afford Obama people so get real. We don’t need POLAR CHANGE we need the kinda change the Palin will bring to Washington. We need to clean up the do nothing’s and corrupted politician’s and get rid of the log jam, and have the government start working for the people. They need to start addressing the real issues like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the national debt and our federal reserve system. The constitution does not provide the government to be the answer for everything. We need to follow it and quit screwing around with EVERYTHING. Palin will see what’s going on and begin addressing the waste, corruption, and management of the people’s money. You Obamacons need to reevaluate your candidate because it is a dark path he is leading you.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Saturday shows Barack Obama attracting 46% of the vote while McCain earns 45%.
As McCain has begun to chip away as Obama’s convention bounce, most of his gains have come among women voters. Obama still leads 51% to 44% among women, but that seven-point edge is just half the fourteen point lead he enjoyed last Tuesday. McCain leads by three among men, little changed in recent days.

Rarely do the VP selections determine the outcome of the general election. However, the upcoming debate between Sen. Biden and Gov. Palin on October 2nd could be a turning point in this election if the two presidential debates are perceived to be a draw. And the odds might just actually be in Gov. Palin’s favor because she really doesn’t need to win the debate. If Sen. Biden is perceived to be the winner, but it is nowhere near a knock out win, this debate may end up being effectively a wash with little or no effect. That’s because Sen. Biden will be expected to win. Yet if the debate is perceived to be a draw, then Gov. Palin will gain stature with the experienced Sen. Biden. And if the American electorate perceives her on a par with Sen. Biden, then the odds of McCain-Palin winning the election will increase. If on the other hand, should either Sen. Biden or Gov. Palin land a huge knock out blow, then the election might well be over.
Having said that, should either Sen. Obama or Sen. McCain lands two knockout blows in their two debates, then the VP debate won’t make a bit of difference no matter the outcome.

Virtual every pollster in the country.
Zogby cooks his numbers, especially in the months and weeks leading up to an election. Zogby is often a very extreme outlier compared with other pollsters, so he gets a lot of press and attention. However, when the final election nears, Zogby ‘suddenly’ and mysteriously falls in line with the other pollsters. He is being accused of taking averages of the other pollsters, creates trendlines and produces numbers where he expects them to be.
Afterwards, those averages are usually fairly correct of course, and he uses that to proof his ‘reliability’.
Zogby is a joke.

“Mccain challenged obama on townhalls (by the way, don’t tell me you never hear obama says “that’s something I want to debate with Mccain”) ”
Obama offered a July 4th debate, McCain refused.
“and he want to debate on July 4th. Why July 4th”
Why not? What better day to debate avbout the country’s future than to debate on its birthday. McCain refused.
Obama went to Saddleback even though that was McCain turf. Think McCain would dare debate Obama in front of union members?
The campaigns only agree to 3 and a VP debate (basically the same schedule we’ve seen for 3 or 4 election)
Less outright lies this time Hannah

Okay, never mind Palin, she’s quarter to gone anyway.
Why is nobody paying attention to Andrew McCain and the government takeover of Silver State Bank? After the Keating Five and Neal “Silverado S&L” Bush, you’d think this would be big news. But if you look around the mainstream media, it’s either not there or buried…except for CBS, bless their hearts.
Somebody better start digging on this.

Does Fox have a Constitutional Right To Interview Obama?
Which Amendment is that?

Posted by: Willem van Oranje | September 7, 2008, 1:28 am 1:28 am

Ryan, yes, he appeared Fox news in April, hmm…but when did he starts running for President??? What interviews didn’t mccain go to?? Why don’t you send a request to see mccain would debate in front of union members. my guess is he’s not a wimp. As for Hillary’s debate, quote me where he said the election was over?? dare him to say that the election was over when he didn’t get the numbers he needed to win, in fact, he never get the number he needed to win without the bigwigs’ SuperD, where one of their vote = to 100,000 ordinary votes. Call that a democracy.
You should spend more time trying to figure out ways to blame someone when your Messiah did bad in debates. With Hillary, you blame ABC unfair, with Saddleback, you blame mccain cheated. Come on, tell the Messiah to be a man and stop whining. Whining is not going to help talking with Putin.
My case is rest with what a wimp obama is. I just hope he’ll be more of a man if he’s president.

Willem,
Its ridiculous isn’t it.
Obama boycotts FoxNews because they uncritically aired outrageous lies about him.
Even then he eventually goes on FoxNoew, even doing O’Reilly.
Palin refuses to speak to any media because some left wing blogs and a conspiracy theory said means things baout her daughter. And the campaign sneers as if answering questions were beneath her.
That last one is funny because the National Eqnuirer is claiming they told the McCain campaign they were going public. So the addressing of tleft wing blog rumors appears to be yet another lie.

I doubt her facts, as she is just reading off of the McDummy campaign’s script!
“She did not go into the hundreds of millions of dollars in earmarks she has sought as governor and as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska,” nor the fact in 2001 and 2002, McCain — a legit pork-buster — cited three of the pork projects she sought as “objectionable.”
Why no Press availabilities for your new “cheerleader” McCain? Afraid of what she will say? A week or two more of tutoring her still won’t prepare her for the Presidency, in case you die in your first term….
This doesn’t look good McCain, Hell I could get my wife up there to read off a script like she is doing. Can she be your VP???

Djeeeezus.
This woman thinks she can do anything she likes when she doesn’t get her way:
John Cyr, executive director of the Public Safety Employees Association, which represents Alaska’s law enforcement officers, said the governor’s grudge against Wooten clouded her judgment and led her to hold down trooper salaries and other funding.
“The trooper budget was held hostage because they wouldn’t fire Mike Wooten,” Cyr said.

And last year she fired her top legislative aide, John Bitney, after he confessed to an affair with the wife of a friend of Todd’s.
“When you fall out of favor with Palin, it’s a pretty quick off-with-your-head,” said Persily, the former aide. Bitney went to school with Sarah Palin and worked in her gubernatorial campaign before following her to the governor’s office. He now serves as chief of staff to the speaker of the state House. He said he blames himself for surprising his former boss.

What I find interesting about this weekends earmark fracas is that Gov. Palin and Senator Obama have very similar track records on earmark spending.
Both have recognized that earmarks can have a corrupting influence and that the system has to be scaled back.
While they haven’t gone cold-turkey, both have taken action to cut their projects back. In the case of Senator Obama, he hasn’t requested any projects this year (one note of caution on that: This is easy for him to do because the Senior illinois center is on the appropriations committee. Gov Palin has dropped the annual requests that her office makes to the alaska congressional delegation.
Also, one this should be cleared up. According to my numbers, Senator Obama asked for $853 million in projects between 2006-08, not $1 billion as the McCain camp has alluded.

Obama attended a madrassa. Irrefutable fact.”
He visited the Basuki school, which Obama attended from 1969 to 1971.
“This is a public school. We don’t focus on religion,” Hardi Priyono, deputy headmaster of the Basuki school, told Vause. “In our daily lives, we try to respect religion, but we don’t give preferential treatment.”
Vause reported he saw boys and girls dressed in neat school uniforms playing outside the school, while teachers were dressed in Western-style clothes.
“I came here to Barack Obama’s elementary school in Jakarta looking for what some are calling an Islamic madrassa … like the ones that teach hate and violence in Pakistan and Afghanistan,” Vause said on the “Situation Room” Monday. “I’ve been to those madrassas in Pakistan … this school is nothing like that.”

McCain is too quick to jump on top of problems without properly analyzing the situation. He was wrong on Iraq when he said they had no weapons of mass destruction and when he said it would take less than 100,000 troops to win. And he was certainly wrong when he said it would pay for itself.
McCain was wrong with Georgia and Russia when he wanted us to get into a military cnflict with them when what was necessary was a little diplomacy. Diplomacy France provided for goodness sakes.
McCain was wrong on Palin. She will not be ready to take over on day 1, which is the only requirement of a Vice President. She has no command military experience like he said. She is the antithesis of him. She’s pork hungry, religious fanatic who believes the best way to negotiate with lawmakers is to veto everything until she gets her way. Maybe that works in Alaska, but in Congress, they will happily sit around and pass bills all day long every day that the President will have to veto… only they won’t look like idiots, he will.
Being President is all about diplomacy and negotiation. Will foreign powers, with Congress and with the American people. The McCain camp has shown they simply don’t have what it takes to lead.

I am so sick of republicans making up the ‘truth’ as they go along and disappointed that so many American’s still don’t get it. Obama is no angel, but McCain/Palin’s lies are downright scary. This is the same path that Bush took into office. Lies, double standards, and slander. McCain, a man I once respected, has thrown away everything that once made him respectable. He has no integrity and is more interested in winning this campaign than being honest with the American people. If you think I want to be lied to, guess again. The only person McCain is interested in is himself. And to quote John McCain:
‘I didn’t decide to run for president to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to be president.’ ~ From ‘Worth the Fighting For’ by J. McCain.

The difference in respect to earmarks of Obama and those of Palin is that Palin is making that a central campaign issue for her and its a lie. Senators get elected to represent their State. Whats good for the people of Ilinois could be good for the Country.
Gov. Palin is using her gender as a double edge sword. On one hand the media is sexist when it ask tough questions and on the other hand vote for me and McCaine because Im a strong woman and mother. To bad the media is allowing the Republicans to get away with it.
The other thing she should know is that Pitbulls often try to eat children.
Finally how in gods name a candidate can get away with saying an election will not be about issues as McCaine has said is beyond me.

Given the tax revenues that the US derives from the state of Alaska and the amount of tax dollars that flow back into the state, Alaska qualifies as the largest welfare recipient in the US. Being the chief executive of such a welfare recipient is experience we can rely on, I’m sure.

The other thing is with all that heralded executive experience she’s supposed to have and with all those earmarks she got for Wasilla and raising the sales tax (no state sales tax but there are local sales taxes) how is it she left the town $20 million in debt?

who gives a cr*p about Palin – she’s a nobody who won’t even bother to take interviews. frankly, i’m not interested in a candidate who only wants their polished side to show.

Posted by: MIguy | September 7, 2008, 7:53 am 7:53 am

Number of earmarks that McCain has attached to legislation bills…ZERO.
I repeat…ZERO.
The choice by McCain to NEVER attach earmarks is unmatched by ANY other Senator, and is a reflection of unrivaled moral character.

Just like the press had to do with every candidate
just like the press had to fight for with Nixon and Libby.
just like the only way we have started to learn the truth on the disaster of katrina and the falsification of WMD and tricking the people into a war…
where are the interviews?
where are the answers?
the press IS the people.
the press iS what got us the truth the only times we got it in the past 8 years…
where are the interviews, the answers from her own ill-equipped knowledge base?
the McCain campaign is continuing the secrecy and cover ups of the last 8 years.
people call them out.
Mccain threw the country under the bus for marketing and manipulation…
just like their “cousins” who have “ruled” us into the last 8 years and our country and our economy falling apart.
throw the “secretive ones” …the “un American ones” out…
Palin being removed from the scrutiny of ANYTHING outside words that were written by someone else and not showing that she comprehends ANY of the issues we face…
is not only sad…absurd…but scary that some people actually continue to fall for the slime that got us here on this downward spiral over the last 8.
Mccain’s team IS the same team that got us the last 8 years of cover ups, lies, misleading statements in speeches…and then piointing fingers in three different directions and “blaming” the liberal press for actually asking questions to draw attention
Don’t Be played throw the bums out.

don’t be blamed by 4 more years of cover up and secrecy…
and hiding from scrutiny on bad choices by avoiding and pointing fingers at the press…

no more Rovian tactics
no more Cheney tactics
No more manipulating the American people to our own detriment
throw the bums out!

It’s the economy stupid! People are gonna vote their wallets and they will vote Obama/Biden. NOBODY in their right mind would vote for another Republican! Tom Ridge called John McCain, John Bush….and he got that right!
Republicans try to throw people off by not discussing the issues, but it won’t work.

Not bad but weak. Just finished watching little George attempt to catch Obama out in a series of contradicting vicious gotcha questions. Quite a difference from the softball fluff piece with McCain

Posted by: Polaris | September 7, 2008, 9:27 am 9:27 am

McCain and certainly Palin welcome all distractions with fervor, as long as they don’t have to focus on the real current issues and consequently put their actual policy proposals on the table.
In a difficult times that make Americans look out for strong government, they still repeat that blasé phrase that “gorvernment gets in the way of the people”… Incredible. The GOP government is nowhere to be seen when things get really tough for Americans…
It’s amazing me that the MSM doesn’t hit the Republicans a whole lot harder on steering away from the issues time and again. We are fighting two wars, many millions of our fellow Americans are in serious economic troubles, our businesses, schools and cultural institutions are in decline… And the masses are cheering an Alaskan governor for reading a text written by a Bush speech writer!?!?
In TIME magazine, Joe Klein hits the nail on its head when he writes:
“Maybe I’m getting old, maybe it’s that I’ve seen this act so often before, maybe it’s that the people I talk to when I go out on the road really are having a harder time paying for things like health care, gasoline and college tuition, but I’m finding the Republican attempts to derail the conversation from the actual state of the country really depressing and disgraceful this year. They practice Orwellian politics of the crudest sort. They are trying to sell a big lie–that the election is about the social issues of the 1960s, or Barack Obama’s patriotism or his eloquence, or the “angry left,” when it’s really about turning toward a more moderate path after the ideological radicalism and malfeasance of the past eight years.”
Americans, please wake up. A 20th century POW story and a nice Alaskan smile have NO relevance whatsoever for what America and the world is demanding from the American Administration in the 21st century.

Today the Rasmussen Poll states as follows:
In the first national polling results based entirely on interviews conducted after Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech, Barack Obama gets 46% of the vote and so does John McCain. When “leaners” are included, it’s all even at 48%. Tracking Poll results are released at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time each day
la, la, la, la, la oh it’s such a happy day today!!! Enjoy this all of the obama junkies! lolololol And, it is only in the middle of the post covention bounce for McCain and Palin! Yes, yes, yes!!! Go McCain!
We are going to put Obama in his place and the Democratic party for being so vindictive with Hillary and Bill Clinton! They are going to be taught a huge lesson this year!

Obama = no drilling , no nuclear enegy
McCain = off shore drilling, build nuclear power plants

Turning to the issues for a minute, the federal government is spending HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS on prescription drugs.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden believe that we use the purchasing power, just like when private companies like McDonald’s order their potatoes, and negotiate the price with the big drug companies.
EVERY OTHER INDUSTRIAL COUNTRY IN THE WORLD SAVES THEIR TAX PAYERS BILLIONS OF DOLLARS BY NEGOTIATING ON THE PRICE OF PRESCRIPTIONS.
Why does John McCain favor wasting the American taxpayer money?
===================================
Here’s another question: Who is the REAL pro-life party? The Democrats!
If you have cancer and go to the local ER without insurance, you will very likely be sent back home without scheduling treatment. Send home to die.
Come back later when you have health insurance!
Biden and Obama think everyone should be able to by the same insurance as provided to members of congress.

For all of those saying Sarah Palin is not ready to be VICE-President because she knows nothing about Irag.
What the heck does Obama, who wants to be PRESIDENT, know about Iraq, other than he was against the war (so were a lot of people), before he was able to VOTE against the war, and AGAINST the surge (but now admits it has been successful).
He has only been there maybe twice in the whole time he’s been Senator. Palin made a trip over there practically immediately after becoming Governor. Palin also has a son who has been training for deployment to Iraq.
I doubt that Obama, the PRESIDENTIAL candidate, other than what his 500 advisers have been telling him for the last 18 months, knows all that much more about Iraq than Palin, the VICE-Presidential Candidate does.
And I will bet by the time she has her debate with Biden, she has been brought up to speed on what information she might not already have.

Posted by: Lee | September 7, 2008, 10:16 am 10:16 am

The real joke here is Obama claiming that McCain is trying to make this race about personality and not issues. Once Palin is now the new phenom, and Obama is old news he gets angry.
But to make matters worse, we’ve been hearing about Obama for over a year nonstop and most people have no idea what he stands for other than:
1. Socialize everything
2. Raise the corporate tax rate (newsflash barack: it’s the second highest in the world as it is!)
3. Redistribute money from hardworking and successful to lazy and unsuccessful.
In terms of foreign policy, he shifts his position every day so who knows what he stands for.
The only sure thing is Barack Obama wants to usher in Socialism into the US. If you’re a socialist, go ahead and vote for him. If you’re not, avoid him like the plague.

The question is why people aren’t buying health insurance. Because it’s not affordable? That’s complete BS. People can afford cable tv, but refuse to cancel their subscription. If they would cancel it they’d be able to afford health insurance – but they don’t, bc they are short-sighted and want someone else to foot the bill.
Socializing medicine also brings corruption – just ask anyone in Europe. Doctors try to convince people they don’t need a surgery, or they ignore your illnesses, because the gov can only afford so much. To make matters worse, you’re not allowed to pay for a surgery out of pocket if the governmet decides you don’t deserve it. Old people are often left to die in order to free up money for others.
The only real losers here are the children of these deadbeat parents who refuse to give up
Cable tv, their cell phones and other wasteful spending in order to get their children health insurance.

Rodney,
Get your facts straight. McCain never said it was about personality, someone on his campaign did.
And Sarah Palin needed pork at first bc that is what held up the budget. But she has been cutting it in an unprecedented way and vetoing it. Mind you, her approval rating was over 80% for a reason.
And John McCain has never even once supported pork.
However, barack Obama has gone crazy with pork, about 1mm for every working day. NICE candidate you have there. What a total hypocrite.
Open your eyes. Obama is a fraud – all talk no action.

It is the responsibility of every mayor and governor to do the best for their town ot state.
Is Obama trying to tell us doing your best is bad! What a message to send. “Elect me president, and I’ll make America a third rate nation!”

Usually Americans are offended when someone lies to them.
The issue is that Palin has taken so much money from DC up to Alaska that it makes ‘fiscal reform’ from the ticket a source of laughter.
She had hired a Jack “I’m off to jail for 4 years” Abramoff protege to do the fund porking.
She ran a 527 soft money fund for Ted “I’m indicted for corruption” Stevens.
McCain cannot back up the rhetoric with facts.
He can only whimsically recall the nostalgia of his yesteryear.
Palin didn’t “take on” the allegedly corrupt Alaskan senator; she allied herself with him throughout her brief political career. That includes, we learned today, Palin’s work on Stevens’ 527 group.
The McCain campaign said Palin opposed the infamous “bridge to nowhere.” That’s false.
The campaign said Palin supported the Bush “surge” policy. That’s false. The campaign said Palin is the “commander in chief” of the Alaska National Guard. That’s misleading.

Voters only need to look at the past decisions of both candidates to see how they will spend money as president.
Obama spent millions in earmarks some going to Michelle’s employer–thousands to Father Pfleger.
McCain no earmarks.
Look at the conventions.
McCain had a simple screen with a flag.
Obama spent $6 million on a Temple and millions on color-coordinated food.
Obama will waste our money too.

Some thing is really strange about this lady Palin using all these stall tackie to prevent coming forward for the media to interview her. Why?
The media is not over bearing her. She can not answer questions and she is afraid of the questions that would be asked and she is making up all these issues hiding behind this campagin as if she is being attack,
Now, she stated she was a hockey mom and like a bull dog and the difference was lipstick so come on and answer these news media questions. I challenge you to that. Either shut up or step forward unless you got some thing to hide.
Every voter out there you will be a fool to vote for this woman. As VP she will have to give news media speech and be in presence of the media. She been in the state government and she once was a sport reporter. Every news media you need to investigate her until election day. This is McCain stall games and this shows she nor him got any sense.

“one result of Obama’s egomanical convention was his tossing megathousands of American Flags in the hopper!”
A few things on this.
Before 2p today, when this respondent posted this statment, I had already read that this story, started by Sen McCain or his supporters, was a lie.
So, please do us all the favor of doing a bit of research before you state something as fact.
And isn’t every convention really somewhat ego driven? A person doesn’t run for this office if they don’t have a healthy ego.
Unfortunately, if nothing else, the comments to the post confirm the inability for many of us to have a conversation about the real issues facing our nation. It would seem, McCain campaign manager Davis called it when he stated that this election is not about issues since there appears to be no plan to have a discussion about issues.
Personally, I don’t care about Gov. Palin’s personal life. But since we have been told lies by the current Repub administration which has been highjacked by the Bush/Cheney administration like the rest of the country, I would feel less concerned about things if the woman on the ticket spoke honestly about her positions. If earmarks are the only way to get funding for big ticket items, and every Gov. does it, fine. But don’t say you don’t when you do. That’s just invites more scrutiny which you will not like.
