The Two Men Who Saved McCain’s Life in That Cell
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told his moving POW story, including this passage: "I was dumped in a dark cell, and left to die. I didn’t feel so tough anymore. When they discovered my father was an admiral, they took me to a hospital. They couldn’t set my bones properly, so they just slapped a cast on me. When I didn’t get better, and was down to about 100 pounds, they put me in a cell with two other Americans. I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t even feed myself. They did it for me. I was beginning to learn the limits of my selfish independence. Those men saved my life."
Those two men, if you were wondering, were George "Bud" Day and Norris Overly.
And neither of them thought McCain would make it.
Day is at the GOP convention, incidentally.

CPAC: Romney Struggles to Convince Voters
Obama Backs Off Birth Control Battle?
While I honor and respect the fighting men and women, my father was a WWII vet (Britain) whose unit liberated Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and my grandfather was a WWI officer, both of these great soldiers from a long line of respected military men never talked about the war. They were humble in their duty and when repeatedly prompted, only then they spoke but they spoke only of the horror inflicted on the innocents, like those in the camps, not what they themselves suffered. That’s fine that McCain has told his story but to go on and on endlessly, I don’t know that just kind of turns me off; it’s like exploiting something that to soldiers is so honorable and the vets I’ve met are just so much more humble than that.

Bud Day was also one of the Swiftboaters, let’s not forget. While he saved John McCain’s life, he peddled lies to the American people and smeared a fellow veteran, John Kerry, who received a Purple Heart for his own acts of heroism.

McCain told an incredible story and it exemplifies what he wants to do in Washington. He is going to fight to get our legislators to start thinking about the people of the United States and not their own greed. It would be nice for more of the people in Washington to stop thinking about themselves and start thinking of the Americans that they serve.

THE POW CARD JUMPED THE SHARK A LONG TIME AGO! THERE WAS NO SUBSTANCE, NO ACTUAL TALK OF HOW HE WOULD ACOMPLISH ALL OF THE PLATITUDES! MOST NOTABLE WAS THE CO OPTING OF ALL OF OBAMA’S MESSAGES AND TALK OF CHANGE! THIS SPEECH WAS EXACTLY WHAT I EXPECTED…NOTHING!

I am truly in awe of McCain’s strength in surviving his POW ordeal. I have now heard that story 8-10-12 times, and I’m still impressed.
I’d like to believe that, 35 years in Washington later, he really does want to stop the partisan rancor and “reach across the aisle”.
Too bad he just staged a 4 day convention full of petty, sarcastic and downright nasty personal attacks on Barack Obama. That whole convention had ZERO substance. It’s basically carbon copy of Bush 2000. Like we want to go down that road again!

Roxanne,
As a Democrat and son of a World War II hero, I find John McCain’s experience very humbling and moving. I’m personally proud of his character and what he demonstrated by not breaking while in that 5 1/2 years of hell. It doesn’t change how I’m going to vote, I’m voting based on policy differences, although I find Obama barely acceptable when it comes to character.

What people has he been thinking about for 26 years is the question.

McCain has the life experience and the wisdom and the honor to serve this country. BO couldn’t even shine his shoes (no pun intended).
McCain wants to truly work with Dems and Independents and believes in serving a cause greater than yourself.
B. Husseins’ ego is all that comes first…MAKE NO MISTAKE. What prey tell has he done for ANYBODY? And the asbestos he had removed while a community organizer is all I know that he’s ever done. Never Obama.

The point that you’re missing is that people are concerned with the economy, losing their jobs, losing their homes and yes national security and in that order. John McCain has used this POW card when it has nothing to do with the problems of today. As Obama has said, he doesn’t get it. No one disputes his war record but sadly, it’s not revelant!

Biden opitimizes the old, white, old boy’s network that characterizes Washington – the true ‘inside the beltway’ homeboy. He’s been in the Senate for 35 years – let it go already. He apparently needs to copy British speeches to make his point, or at least that was his MO in ’88. Some change, Barak – you sold out!

By the way, he keeps talking about knowing how to win a war, which is BS! Does he realize that we lost Viet Nam? This we can win in Iraq is BS! We’ve already lost. We went in for WMD’s that weren’t there. We’re spending 12 billion a month when Iraq has a 79 billion dollar surplus. We’re looking like the biggest idiots in the world and we’re being played. It’s time to get out. McCain is already setting us up to invade Iran! Enough! We’ve got our own domestic problems that have gone unchecked for 8 years!

McCain did our country good by serving in the military but so did many others I appreciate that he served. But it is time to start hearing his visions for the country. There was nothing said that was very moving. We are not living for the past but for the future.McCain sounded like he was tired tonight. While Palin sounded tough she did not say anything about any issues that really have an effect on the average American.I don’t think they have any clue how much people are hurting by this economy.

Roxanne,
I personally don’t like these accusations of “POW card” or “race card” or “gender card”, etc. There are authentic differences between the policies of the two candidates, although they are both failures when it comes to communicating any economic messages of note. I’m still voting for Obama for Supreme Court purposes, but I see both choices as not the best that America could produce. Personally, I’d like to see Hillary Clinton up against Sarah Palin. There’s a real contest between two smart choices.

McCain says to stand up and fight against partisan rancor. So that’s what I plan to do.
Like the partisan rancor when pitt-bull palin made that sarcastic quip about Obama’s community organizing for 3 years after college?
So what did Palin do for 3 years after college?
Turns out she need a 5th year of college and was either unemployed or working as a sportscaster and or part time fishing. Are you impressed, self-adoring right wing patriots?
Obama was an organizer, sure. For 3 years after college.
Was Palin president of the harvard law review?
Is she a constitutional law scholar?
A state senator for 8 years?
A civil rights attorney?
A US Senator?
A battle-tested candidate for President who endured 2 years and challenged one of the most storied families in American public life?
How many votes make you mayor of Wasilly anyway (pop 5000)?
Living in a glass house? Hypocrites. Keep your partisan-rancor to yourselves!
Posted by: will | September 5, 2008, 12:22 am 12:22 am
What the GOP showed the American people tonight is, they have nothing new to offer (no new policies). Also they want us to believe that McCain’s experience as a POW is more important than discussing issues that affect the middle class in America.
A vote for McCain would return America to the stone age. Enough is enough.

Obama”s supporters responded to the RNC speeches by sending money to their candidate. They have not learned .. he out-spent Hillary Clinton in many big states 4 and 5-1 .. and she still beat him. Money does not change his razor-thin resume … or his lack of work in both the state senate in Illinois and the U.S. Senate. His voting record is abysmal. Palin got one thing really right … he has written 2 books about himself … and has written absolutely no significant legislation! He was “present” .. and that”s about it. So … save your gas and grocery $$$ libs!!

Now he comes out swinging for alternative energy?
So why did he vote against it before he was for it? Well, the terms pander and hypocrisy come to mind.

Will somebody tell me just what the heck “voted with Bush x% of the time” even means?! You can’t vote “with” the president, as he doesn’t actually vote, nor does he introduce legislation. Furthermore, as Bush rarely utilized the veto, pretty much any legislation that passed must have been a vote “with” Bush, regardless of political affiliation.
So what the heck is this talking point really suggesting? That he voted with the Republican party most of the time? How many politicians don’t vote with their party most of the time?
Frankly, this whole “voted with Bush” business is one of the dumbest political tropes I’ve ever encountered.

I am so tired of John McCain’s POW story. Nam is over people. Right here in America we have soilders who sacrified life limb and healthy minds return home in order to end their lives. The soilders we should be paying attention to are the men and women coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan to end their lives by committing suicide. Snap out of it America we have a new generation returning to American soil to die. No more about McCain the war hero. What about our next generation of leaders?

I believe the GOP truly thinks they have a winning strategy by putting lipstick on an old elephant and let that trumpet ‘Change’ as loud as it can.
Cartoonists will have a fieldday with this in the coming days.
Nobody will be fooled.
Their ‘solutions’ are still the same and we already know they didn’t work.
Lipstick won’t cut it.

McCain has every right to tell his POW story. Not only did he suffer for 5 years (what have you done of significance for this country for even ONE DAY?), he did it for service. As did all veterans, and it would not be enough to thank them every single day. It is what these brave men and women have done that allows you to sit at your computer and freely insult them. YOu OWE all these veterans your gratitude, so you have a lot of nerve sitting there saying you are tired of his stories. What story do YOU have to tell of what you have done for your fellow man?
mcCain’s and Cindy’s life stories brought me to tears. Lives of service, think of how many lives they have changed? And the legacy continues with their children committment to service as well. Palin’s son is deploying to Iraq also, God bless them all.
Obama? went to a racist and antiAmerican church for 20 years. Has done nothing for the service of this country (“community organizer” nobody knows what that is. Is that even a job at career day?).
Who is the patriot? Who is the hero? It astounds me that anyone can even think of being in the same room as that trash Obama, much less voting for him.

The “Swiftboaters” decidedly did NOT tell lies. They told the truth by the ACTUAL men who commanded, served with and served under John Kerry. It is only revisionists on the left and the media (which I know is redundant) that have woven the “lying” tale. Read the book Unfit for Command. Kerry is the biggest Elmer Gantry of American politics, but is soon to be eclipsed by “The Annointed One”.

Thank you for saying that, CDS. Most combat veterans, myself included, do not want to talk about their experiences. While I honor what McCain endured for his country, I am turned off by the endless exploitation of that experience for political gain. It cheapens what all combat veterans endured.

The only man who “saved” McCain was his interrogator Bui Tin, who McCain steupfyingly EMBRACED at the POW hearings while berating and screaming at the familes of POWS who were in tears begging McCain NOT to close the investigation into the demise of or reported cases of some still surviving POWS being sold as slave labor to countries like China, Russia, and other parts of Southeast Asia WHERE THEY REMAIN TO THIS DAY!!! (American Free Press) Maybe that is why McCain has repeatedly flown into a rage when POWS have asserted that they were interrogated by Soviets while in captive. I don’t know what McCain is trying to hide, but it sure STINKS something awful. And I would vote for the second coming of Herbert Hoover before I give my vote to that despicable individual of the worst kind, named John McCain.
