The Umbrage Wars Continue: Reid Spox Calls Palin’s Speech ‘Shrill’
Apparently, Sen. Hillary Clinton’s office has yet to send out to Democrats that list of verboten words.
CNN reports that Jim Manley, the spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. — whom Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin attacked last night — responded to the attack by saying that "shrill and sarcastic political attacks may fire up the Republican base, but they don’t change the fact that a McCain-Palin administration would mean four more years of failed Bush-Cheney policies.”
"Shrill" is one of those pejoratives many women find offensive and often see only applied to people of their gender. Republicans immediately jumped on the adjective as evidence of Democratic sexism.
Manley was responding to Palin’s assertion last night that “Harry Reid, the Majority leader of the current do-nothing Senate, not long ago summed up his feelings about our nominee. He said, quote, ‘I can’t stand John McCain.’ Clearly what the Majority leader was driving at is that he can’t stand up to John McCain.”
With a campaign involving the first major party African-American presidential nominee, the first female vice presidential nominee, and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who would be the oldest candidate ever first elected president, pundits and partisans have antennae up to detect code words.
McCain’s campaign took umbrage when Obama advisers kept using the word "confused" to describe the senator, and after Obama said McCain was "losing his bearings."
McCain senior adviser Mark Salter in May said that Obama "used the words ‘losing his bearings’ intentionally, a not particularly clever way of raising John McCain’s age as an issue."
Obama’s campaign, likewise, saw myriad racial code words coming from Bill and Hillary Clinton during the primaries, as when the former president compared Obama’s South Carolina primary performance with that of. Rev. Jesse Jackson.
And Clinton’s campaign didn’t care for Obama referring to "claws" coming out, not to mention myriad snide sexist remarks from cable TV commentators.

Sen. DeMint: GOP Race Could Go Until Convention
Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
Newsflash: McCain’s age and health are an issue.
He would be the oldest President to take office. He has survived skin cancer mutliple times. He has lingering injuries from the war.
His medical file was 1500 pages long.
McCain said he would concentrate on getting more sleep when he can.
“If I put in three or four 18-hour, 20-hour days in a row, I’m not sharp. It’s just a fact,” the Republican senator from Arizona said. “I’m more sharp if I get a little rest.”
McCain said he feels best sleeping until 7:30 or 8 a.m., as opposed to his usual morning drill of rising at 5:30 or 6 a.m.
“It seems to help me to get up a little later in the morning,” he said, joking, “Sorry to bother with that intimate detail.”

What Obama hand in one page, so what is Obama hiding, because last time i went to doctor and got a clean bill of health my report was 3 pages!!
His Mother was at the convention 96 years old!!
And so what about his sleep.
Before you libs attack McCain or Palin why don’t you ask the same as your socialist Obama / Biden

Dear concerned citizens of America and mass media of the U.S.A.
As a concerned disabled American Veteran and American citizen, I consider it my duty and responsibility to address the following critical issues facing the voters of our Greatgrand nation, the United States of America [USA].
The citizens of the United States of America [USA] have the ultimate power and responsibility to elect the Right Ticket with the right joint “temperament, judgment, and statesmanship” to lead our nation as well as change our nation’s present and future moral, political, economic, educational, health care, energy, military, and foundational soul.
In my firm professional, personal, and political opinion, the media should help the common voter to explore and discuss the following attributes of the present Republican and Democratic presidential slates:
1. Does the joint ticket have a calm, cool, and collected ” temper and impulse” [Presidential Temperament]?
2. Does each ticket have sound and sustained “Judgment and Caliber”?
3. Does each ticket have a “presidential depth and degree” in regard to their purpose, policies, and positions?
4. Does each ticket have adequate, “understanding and knowledge” of workings around Washington”?
5. Does each ticket have enough “vigor, wisdom and Vision” for the future of our beloved Great-grand Nation?
6. Does each ticket possess enough joint foreign policy experience and ex-poser based on “American Values, Virtues, Vastness, and strong soul”?
7. Are their campaign talk, slogans, ads, plans, and programs based on facts and are they free of fear, fiction, frivolous labels, unfair attacks, negativity, and impulsivity?
If your answer to a majority of the above questions is yes, I suggest you vote for that ticket. As a Independent registered voter I have decided to vote for Obama-Biden ticket. I am sure they will protect our national security, Strong’s, stamina and strong soul. Rebuild our nation from bottom up in all areas of need, OBAMA-BIDEN ticket will once again restore and rebuild our global standing with the use of maximum international humane diplomacy and minimal force if and when indicated.
Yours sincerely,
COL. A.M. Khajawall [Ret] MD., Forensic psychiatrist, Colonel, US-AR / MC Combat Stress Control[Ret], Disabled American Veteran and Iraq Freedom team.
PS: This nation will not buy into kitchen sink approah. We are getting deeper into internal and external holes thru these attack and world is laughing on us and enjoying our kitchen sink gimmics. I am sure GOP.RNC, FOX, RUSH, And McCains his surrogates will fail to dupe, decieve, and deprive USA its deserved leadership.

Ryan! Sweating over there, huh…before, you scoffed at Palin…now, post-speech…uh oh…they still might lose, but it will not be easy for Obama…
I saw a funny post about somebody saying to a republican “but she’s just a heartbeat away from the presidency”…republican responds “don’t tease me like that!”
Also, ANYONE can die unexpectedly, including Obama. My question: is Obama ready to be president if Biden dies? Heh heh.

Spock,
I mentioned his service injuries.
That they happened while in the service does not suddenly make them any less debilitating.
Obama is a physically fit man in his mid-40s with a complete clean bill of health. Feel free to look up his record.

Wade,
The clapping seals in MN may want Palin but the rest of the country, not so much.
Its true anyone can die suddenly.
But the likelyhood is much greater for a 72 year old man that suffered horrific injuries as a POW and has been a cancer suurvivor multiple times.
That will be a consideration for the voters like dozens of other issues that drive people votes.

As a Democratic woman, what really amazes me is the level of support Sarah Palin enjoys from conservative and moderate men in the Republican Party. From the reaction I’ve seen and read, these men have no problem with the fact that she is a woman. I contrast this with the liberal Democratic elite, who began urging Hillary Clinton to drop out of the race as early as Iowa. Republicans have been far more supportive of their female candidate than my own party was of Hillary Clinton. As a woman, I am disturbed by this. Am I disturbed enough to vote McCain-Palin? No. Am I disturbed enough to sit out this election? YES. I will not vote for the Republican ticket because I don’t agree with their policy positions, nor will I vote for a party that rejected a qualified female candidate in favor of an unqualified, affirmative action candidate.

Biden will likely release his records soon.
He also is the VP candidate as opposed to the Prez candidate.
So the importance of his health in terms of what America is voting for is a little more subdued.

You bet she was shrill. Grating. Fingernails on the blackboard annoying. And catty.
Besides that, she lied (about being a fiscal conservative; about Obama’s bipartisan record and his tax-cutting proposals).
Gov Palin is obviously a quick study, as she is really good at regurgitating Republican talking points.
But does she have a mind of her own?
I didn’t hear much in the way of substance.
My overall impression: is this what my daughters should aspire to? A bitchy mean girl with a fancy up-do hurling taunts from a podium?
How demeaning of women in politics.
I’m thoroughly UN-impressed.
And becoming more offended by the day.

Let us remember McCain’s mother is a live and well in her 90s. Obama’s mother died very young of multiple cancers. Life expectancy has hereditary factors. McCain’s cancer is from sun exposure, not the metasticizing type that kills. Get your facts.

But it’s an accurate adjective for both the sound of her voice and the content of her speech last night. Palin herself referred to Hillary Clinton as whining, so there’s a certain poetic justice. Enough. My ears hurt.

Calling a woman “shrill” is sexist. I can’t think of anyone less appealing than Harry Reid. He stood up in congress and said we had lost the war and that was it…we should give it up. Would I want that person in charge of my country? Absolutely not! Would I want anyone who voted against supplying our troops in the battlefield? Absolutely not! Do I want a person who has written more books about himself than has voted in office in charge of my country? Absolutely not! The liberal news media and Hollywood have hand-picked this guy to carry their torch into Washington but I hate to break it to you…all of us in the “fly-over” states will make sure that torch gets blown out.

Where is your humility and grace as a leader or servant?
Obama is the real Christian- dont be fooled by Republicians in sheeps clothing

“but gets offended when someone questions his “community organizing” for ACORN, best known for its absentee voter fraud and NINJA mortgages? Hmm. Where is the media?”
In 1995, former Republican Gov. Jim Edgar refused to implement the federal “Motor Voter” law, which Republicans argued could invite fraud and which some Republicans feared could swell the ranks of Democratic voters.
The law mandated people be allowed to register to vote in government offices such as driver’s license renewal centers.
Obama sued on behalf of ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. The League of Women Voters and other public-interest groups joined in.
“He and his client were the ones who filed the original case — they blazed the trail,” said Paul Mollica, who represented the League.
So a Republican refused to enforce a law to make it easier for people to register and vote, Obama sued them and won.
Why are Republicans always seeking ways to restrict people from voting under the guise of voter fraud?
Whether purging voter rolls, spreading false propaganda in minority to outright voter intimidation, what is the Republican party’s problem with citizens asserting their right to vote?

“Shrill” describes a tone and a pitch. It’s probably used more in describing a certain type of female voice because they are usually in the mid to high range. It’s hard to imagine a man with a truly shrill voice because of the lower, deeper timber. Whether it’s disrespectful or not, Palin’s voice does have a hard, almost metallic sound to it. Not pleasing to the ears. However, I believe that’s the least of her problems at the moment. (I never found Hillary’s voice to be “shrill.” She was/is a terrific speaker and she modulates her tone well.)
Posted by: outtahere | September 4, 2008, 1:51 pm 1:51 pm
‘Shrill’ is not PC. Reid could have made his point without using this offensive term.

Posted by: Wade | September 4, 2008, 1:54 pm 1:54 pm
Andrea – I’ve never seen a politician on either side of the aisle so intent on insulting voters as Obama.
He has insulted small town voters numerous times. Religious people have been insulted with his “bitter, clinging…” comment.
And his insistence on calling Palin a former mayor is demeaning and ignores that she’s a governor now.
So let’s just call Obama “the former community organizer from Chicago”.
Posted by: Peach | September 4, 2008, 1:54 pm 1:54 pm
My concern is: How is the global community viewing this? she did sound shrill. I thought, is it me or is her voice a bit too high? I had to turn the channel several times just to be able to rest my ears a bit. Also, we need to build up our foreign policy credentials. Can you imagine if this woman has to go to a foreign country and talk to world leaders about terrorism? I don’t know about you, but I want our country to be taken seriousy again.

I remember very well when they too said whine, shrill, B…etc, etc, etc.
Posted by: irma | September 4, 2008, 1:55 pm 1:55 pm
What’s more sexist to me is that John McCain would pick a VP, mainly because she is a woman, and he hopes that will be enough to convince other women to vote for him.
That’s infinitely more sexist to me than using an adjective to describe certain qualities of her speech.
This woman, whom John McCain wants for his VP, is a governor of a state, yet beyond the boilerplate talking points of all Republican politician candidates, she has expressed few individual perspectives on the major domestic or foreign policy challenges facing our great nation.
I’m sorry, but I expect much more from a Vice Presidential candidate, man or woman.

I was working on my computer but had the GOP convention on TV in the other room, listening to it with only “half an ear” because I’m convinced that NOTHING coming from the GOP is worth my full attention. However, when all I heard was vitriol and venom spewing from McCain’s surrogates, i.e., Rudy, et al, and more of the same from McCain’s putative running mate, I turned the TV off. The “Grand Old Party” is no longer grand because it now rolls around in sewage, spattering mud and worse wherever they can. No wonder young people have been uninspired by the “politics as usual — smoke-filled room antics that seek to represent all Americans, not just the lobbyists and political high rollers.

“Shrill” is not a gender specific adjective. It’s descriptive and subjective, and it’s fair for Reid to use it do describe such a NEGATIVE speech. As a woman, I find it ridiculous that any remark with a negative connotation, made against our gender, has suddenly become sexist. Negative attacks are negative attacks, and it seems obvious they are meant to be partisan, not sexist. The Republicans, including those pretending to be bitter Hillary supporters, are grasping at straws. You’re not fooling anyone except yourselves.

This sexist card is going to get old real quick. Palin is an anti-feminist candidate in her political performance and values. Ironically, she has opposed sex education, funding for unwed mothers, and says a female doesn’t have the right for abortion in cases of rape and incest. Now “sexism” accusations are being used to counter almost every concern about her, a woman who betrays the values of the majority of American women.

Everyone has got to Love this the libs are scared, that they are now attacking a VP becasue she is a female!! A VP pick that has character, non-corrupt and can gut a moose!! A VP pick with vision, who stands up to the business as usual.
So scared that Obama has broken his promise to the libs and will appear on Fox and be interviewed by O’Rielly but had O’Reilly out on a leash and was told what questions he could ask and how!! and is going against tradition and honor by having it the same night as McCain’s speech, when Obama attacked McCain for rumors he was going to speak on his night!!
Obama is scared inexperienced and is playing Washington politics as usual!!
Attacking Palin for what she did not say, well i guess that Biden did not listen, she did bring up education. She can not be expected to bring up everything, then Obama stating she lied about his record but what was the lie!! he left that out!!

angry black democrat,
Why are you so angry? So women tend to have a higher pitch than men when they speak, making it easier for them to sound “shrill” when they’re screaming at an audience. Did you expect Reid to shower her with compliments? He didn’t like her speech, and used words to make it clear how much he didn’t like it. Look for more negative words in his comments tomorrow about McCain’s speech. Do you really expect us to believe that the Dems are the insensitive ones?

Shes obviously clueless and just sounded mean last night.

i’m so tired of people saying how nasty the repubs were. conventions are like pep rallies. you obama people should know that. they are meant to inspire the base — and make the opposition the enemy. last night, the repubs were very successful doing that. the fact the dems are so angry proves this. the only reason why some people at the dem convention were not “personal” with mccain is because they are all supposedly friends. biden, the clintons, and others say that they are friends with mccain. nevertheless, the still attacked him.

Obama carrying the racist card till June?
Where are your facts to support that? Come to think of it, the McCain camp was accusing his Obama of playing the race card when in effect they were the one’s playing it. So it could be said the race card got played out past June. So far 3 different cards have been played by the McCain campaign – the race, the POW, and now the sexist card.

Ya know McCain once was a darling of the independent voters. But a survey did today states that many of them were turned off by the speech given by Governor Palin. Because it had no substance, just and character attacks.
Its sad that the McCain running for president doesnt have the same values of the once beloved Senator McCain.

Sarah Palin brought up Obama’s PRESENT votes in the Illinois state senate because the McCain campaign knows they have a winning issue here. The Repubs have gone over the records, and realized that in every single case where Obama voted “present” instead of taking a stand, the bill was on a controversial issue. Look for them to harp on this issue for the next two months. Obama’s tendency to avoid the tough issues contrasts sharply with John McCain’s tendency to fight for what he believes, even when it costs him politically. The Republicans will frame this campaign as a choice between a maverick war hero who always stands up for what he believes vs. a political opportunist whose personal ambitions exceed his talents or capabilities. In other words, substance vs. style. I don’t know whether it will work, but I do know that Sarah Palin was a sound choice by John McCain. She revs up the conservative base and attracts moderate female voters, as well as some thoroughly PO’d Hillary supporters. I think the Democrats have a fight on their hands. Judging from Ms. Palin’s performance last night, I would not underestimate her talents. She’s fighting for what she believes, and she’s fighting for her place in history as the first female Vice President of the United States. She will not go quietly into the night.

I predict that the McCain campaign will take Palin off the trail for 7-10 days so she can deal with Alaska, the investigation and family issues and so they can get her up to speed on the issues before she starts taking questions. In the meantime, of course, The National Enquirer and others will be printing new allegations and statements of fact which will contradict her “story” about her record. I think there is a 50-50 chance that Palin will not return to the campaign trail as the VP candidate.

How anti-press is the McCain campaign? They just canceled a Habitat for Humanity PHOTO OP. Because it has to do with “houses”? Go figure!
But another part of the reason McCain canceled the outing is because last night, his campaign went out of its way to slag community organizers, defaming them for not having any “actual responsibilities.” Habitat For Humanity, as it happens, is one of the biggest brand names in community organizing — they maintain a massive network of individual donors, are capable of mobilizing an equally impressive volunteer base to contribute labor to the cause, and have a global reach. It’s not a bad idea at all to associate one’s own brand with Habitat’s. But after last night, I have to imagine that McCain would have found it difficult to face the community organizers of Habitat For Humanity.

“that’s Palin…she got everyone’s attention with volume and somebody else’s words last night…”
She got my attention with the project to build a pipeline to pump natural gas and increase our supply of one of the critical bridges to energy independence.
Palin is the perfect checkmate to Obama’s oratory. She actually has a record of achievement on matters of substance such as lowering the costs of government, energy and ethics reform.
Biden was right. He should be afraid of tangling with her. The Georgetown snobs may dismiss her skills as lightweight, but she handled the ‘most important speech of the campaign’ as the talking heads called it with perfect equanimity and skill. There is something to be said for having been a basketball star, journalism major and broadcaster: stamina, command of the facts, and perfect poise before the camera. She doesn’t stutter. She stays on message. She is slow enough to be understood and clear enough not to become boring. She has chops.
Now I understand that smile on McCain’s face in the commercial he aired the night of Obama’s acceptance in the Temple of the Godz. He knew what he was about to do to the Democratic plans. That is war, folks. It is not about defeating the enemy by destroying; it is about defeating their plan, thus depriving them of their objective.
Starvation does the rest. Judging from the redness in their faces last night and this morning, hypoxia is doing its dirty deed dirt quick.

I am a Democrat, but I was impressed with Sarah Palin’s speech last night. I am NOT impressed by people like Harry Reid who use sexist terminology to denigrate this woman. Years ago, a male colleague called me “shrill” when I disagreed with him in a meeting. I had completely forgotten that. I wonder if Democratic leaders believe using these kinds of sexist terms is an effective way to appeal to women voters? I am a Democrat, but I’m a woman first. I’m offended by these attacks on Sarah Palin, and I was highly offended when Joe Biden addressed the issue of the differences between himself and Governor Palin by pointing out that she was “good-looking.” One woman remarked that she didn’t think the Democrats deserved her support. I can understand how she feels. It will take a monumental effort for me to vote for Biden-Obama, and I’m not sure I can do it.

Harry Reid dead or alive? I have never seen someone who more resembles a corpse or one of those creepy neighbors who you see staring in someone’s bedroom window. Remember how their congress was going to institute ethics & reform the country; also lower gas prices! Strike One and Strike Two now you add a powderkeg like Biden who can talk for 20 minutes and not say anything meaningful. You have a candidate for president who has waffled just in the past year on all his talking points, fisa, energy & foreign policy. He plays only to the polls and does not stand with his own principles! How can he be trusted along with the Pelosi, Reid & their brand of politics.
Not saying McCain and Palin are great, I have my problems with them on social issues, but I don’t want to be led by Barack Mr. Present “when he can make the votes” Obama! Even in France they voted out the socialists!

In spite of her gross speech, it is great that America has a woman on the presidential ticket. I am happy that our kids will take it for granted that a woman or an african american can be president. That part – I like. Wrong woman, though.

HOward Wolfson seems to be the only Dem. with any sense at all, at least he said she did very well last night without a lot of snide remarks. Wonder what Hillary thinks of the attacks on Palin, she’s probably glad she’s out of the whole mess. I hope she lays low the rest of the campaign, he doesn’t deserve her help.

You’re very wrong, as is the McSame/PTAlin campaign on this strategy.
Its The Economy has it spot on. The radical right have it radically wrong on the economy, and the economy touches everyone (both positively and negatively).

CORRECTION – -
Folks, I would NOT be so resolutely confident that McSame and PTAlin have this thing wrapped up. Our right wing participants are almost speaking in the past tense at this point.
Question, how will McSame and PTAlin do in the debates when they actually have to specify how they will “change” things, particularly when their ideology is what needs to be changed? Washington will always be Washington. Nobody will ever change it. Our founding fathers wrote the Constitution so that there would be gridlock and things would move slowly. Remember checks and balances? Remember the Constitution? It’s not Washington that needs to change, it’s the tax structure that comes from years of supply side economic theory that needs to change, of which both McSame and PTAlin both subscribe to.
I think you guys and gals are getting a little ahead of yourselves. It’s a long long time until November. But, these conventions are all smoke and mirrors meant to motivate voters, which is a good thing.

JESUS CHRIST —The greatest Community Organizer known to man.
And boy, did they laugh at him to!
They mocked him, too.

Shrill — from Hapless Harry Reid. The worst Senate Majority Leader EVER.
Same treatment as Hillary got from her own party.

The Greatest, are you comparing Obama to JESUS?? It’s for sure you know nothing about JESUS or you would’nt be comparing Obama with him.

No, he’s comparing community organizers to Jesus. The GOP attacked community organizers in general last night, not just Obama.
Pontius Pilate was a governor, though.

Then Palin will have to deal with troopergate and The Next Big Scadal She will have to overcome will be her daughers, boyfriend. They have alot of info/ammo that will probably be used against Palin.

Who gave a better speech, Biden or Sarah?
Who got more votes, Biden for pres or Sarah for mayor? Sarah for governor would be too lopsided.
Who has higher approval ratings Biden or Sarah?
Why?

This is fantastic, the more the left and its MSM attack agents smear Sarah the stronger she gets. Notice how over a weekend with all the smears Sarah completely trumps Obama’s silly little Roman Temple speech. Also, consider all the millions of dollars Obama wasted to get those ratings. I love it when a liberal burns money. Then, to add to the Obama’s pain, John McCain completely smashes all expectations. No see how the MSM are falling over each other trying to work out what just happened! :)
