‘This Week’ to Host John McCain Town Hall

"This Week with George Stephanopoulos" announced this morning plans to broadcast a live town hall meeting with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, on Sunday, September 28 from the battleground state of Ohio. Just 37 days before the election, the 60-minute program will be broadcast from Columbus, OH and will be moderated by George Stephanopoulos. Invitations for the presidential candidates have been outstanding since May 4, when “This Week” hosted it’s first town-hall meeting with Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY). The Obama campaign is still considering the request.

Let’s not forget what Obama has been listening to for the past 20 years.
Malcolm X’s statement on Black Liberation Theory:
“Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community … Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy.”

I hope they ask HARD questions.

This McCain’s best type of venue. he comes across in such circumstances as controlled, caring, and intelligent. It will go over well, (unless Obama, once again, has *plants* in the audience shouting disruptive stuff).

Obama should take Stephanopolous up on the offer.
McCain thinks he can waltz into the Presidency on his “bulls*t” express.
His lies & sleazy ads have become THE issue in this election.
So, let’s talk the issues:
1. McCain’s pick of an inexperienced, uninformed running-mate after promising the American people that he would choose a running mate who – at a minimum – was already prepared to take over on day 1.
2. McCain’s many flip-flops
- pro-abortion/now staunchly anti-abortion
- against drilling/now pro-drilling
- for immigration reform bill (pro-amnesty)/now opposed to the same bill (a bill he helped to write).
- let’s hear from him what he intends to cut from the federal budget in order to balance that budget. Even Alan Greenspan, a friend of McCain’s, has said that McCain’s plan to lower taxes (without making matching, deep-cuts in the budget) will bankrupt this country.
- Of the remaining federal programs that McCain says he will not cut: HOW does he intend to pay for them if he is lowering taxes across the board?
- why did he support the invasion of Iraq? On what grounds. Not what are is thoughts on the surge, but why did he think we needed to go to invade Iraq in the first place, and as a follow up, why does he think Iraq collapsed into chaos so soon after Bush and Sen. John McCain declared “Mission Accomplished”
- Does he think the invasion of Iraq strengthened Iran?

Yes, audiences are a tricky part of the townhall meeting format. The idea is to get questions from “regular folks.” But it is generally not “regular folks” who attend town meetings, rallies, or debates. The people most motivated to attend are the ones who are most partisan and want to influence the race in some way. That works well when a single candidate has a town meeting with supporters, but if both candidates attend a televised town meeting, it is likely to become something of a zoo.

It is TRAGIC that the dems hang the election of Obama .. to how well they can make Gov. Palin look bad. Yesterdays polls, particularly showing latest trends, do not look good for Obama.

John McCain repeatedly asked for joint town hall meetings across the land with Obama. Obama did not agree, instead preferring to address adoring fans in huge rallies where he can simply read his rhetoric from a teleprompter, with even foreign crowds that cannot even vote !
The polls in Real Clear Politics show a sea of red !
As a lifelong Democrat, I am sad that my party bosses annointed a rookie and shunned a real candidate with gravitas- Hillary- who would be winning by a landslide now

Hillary? You’re joking right? That Bosnia story alone sank her ship along with her total mismanagement of her campaign. Get real! Obama put her away and he’ll do the same to McCain. As for your polls…they don’t contact people with cell phones. How many people out there have those? Also, the polling is done only with people who voted in the last election. The Obama campaign has registered 2 million new voters who have not been called. These are the facts!

I have to agree that Obama should have agreed to McCain’s offer for joint town hall meetings all across America.
I think he didn’t because it’s “not his preferred venue” shall we say. But it makes him out of touch with real voters.
The speech in Germany and the Greek columns were a real turn-off to me. The email ad was downright insulting.
In contrast, both John McCain and Sarah Palin seems very rah-rah America to me (in a good way).

guess you republicans are lookin for anything to double talk your way out of things by covering up the truth and spreeding lies about Obama putting words in this mouth and basicly doing everything to spear the democrats and then attack us for tryin to fight back!!McCain/Pain havn’t said and done anything but put Obama/biden down to make themselves look better which had been used time and time again.
wake up america!! votr for someone who will stand up for the middle class and change what has been happening the last eight years!! McCain/palin aren’t going to change anything and haven’t even explained their platform and I can’t wait for the debats and hope Obama/biden call them on all their cards!!!

Did ABC forget to invite someone? What about Green Party candidate Cynthia McKinney? You remember her, don’t you, George? Here’s a reminder.

I support Obama and I want him to have a townhall meeting forum with McCain. I wonder why he hasn’t done that yet.

Posted by: Marilyn | September 14, 2008, 12:38 pm 12:38 pm

I wonder if this will be a McCain-style “town hall”? You know, where they only let in McCain operatives and weed out minorities to the extent they even eject black reporters.

Not only Obama is scared of town hall meetings, he a scared of Mike Wallace. Obama is the one we need to find out the details and have questions asked of him seeing he is the one wanting us to trust him for a vote. Obama has to come away from his safe spot and prove he can act under pressure when faced with unrehearsed questions and a neutral venue, not like his alma mater. We have not seen how he handles himself in an unfriendly environment.

Palin is nothing more than a face
Let’s look at her record…..
1) Notes thanks but no thanks for bridge to nowhere, truth flopped on support for bridge after media pressure from congress. She also kept the earmark money for the bridge and spent it on other pet projects in Alaska the truth is she never rebuffed congress (NBC 08/31/08,Anchorage Daily News 08/31/08, CBS 08/31/08, Reuters, CNN, CBS 09/03/08)
2) Not in Iraq as previously stated only at Kuwait-Iraq boarder…Didn’t have clearance to enter Iraq. (Boston Globe 09/13/08, CNN 09/13/08, NBC 09/14/08)
3)Against earmarks is not a true statement the truth is Alaska is the largest state per capita for the use of earmarks (LA Times 09/03/08, Washington Post 09/11/08)
4) Posable abuse of power (Troppergate) Used her position as governor to fire her ex brother in law due to bitter devorce with her sister. (CNN 09/11/08, NBC 09/03/08, Anchorage Daily News 09/05/08)
5) Wasting taxpayers money. Charges perdium for working out of home as governor for 312 nights along with travel for her family for a total of $43,490 for the year
Palin may say the media is out to get her but the truth is she doesn’t tell the truth. She says she is a reformer reformer of what she uses the system better than anyone

McCAIN LIES AGAIN INFLATES CROWD ESTIMATES AT EVENT CITES FIRE MARSHAL
FIRE MARSHAL SAYS HIS OFFICE “DIDN’T SUPPLY NUMBER”
A McCain rally in Fairfax Virginia drew a crowd that McCains campaign estimated at 23,000 people. Other participants at the event estimated the crowd size to be 8,000.

The press needs to give a fair and balanced coverage of Sarah Palin and her family. Here are pics and videos of Sarah’s unmatchable sacrifices for the betterment of Alaska:

“Hillary? You’re joking right? That Bosnia story alone sank her ship along with her total mismanagement of her campaign. Get real!”
You need to get real and lose your shallow naive view of political races. Voters concerned about their future don’t really give a rat’s behind about the Bosnia gaffe, any more than you do about 57 states.
Clinton won the moderate votes, all the swings, every big state and the popular vote. Her electoral map was at 327 the day she suspended. She polled in the 50′s against McCain in July/August – Obama has never even broken 50%! Get out of your insular bubble, a clever primary campaign that games red state caucuses and uses the media to steal the nomination DOES NOT WIN THAT CANDIDATE THE GENERAL. The selection of Obama by the party leadership was beyond stupid and they all know it now. They’ll be held accountable by the voters for creating this mess.

Let’s hope the ABC “town hall” has a cross section of voters — not just GOP voters like the typical McCain “town hall.”

So, who gets to invite the audience? I suspect the McCain campaign will “vet” the audience more than they vetted their vice presidential pick. Gotta make sure the “right” folks attend. Don’t want to have any of those hard questions asked. And please–GS ask hard questions? He’s too concerned about proving that he’s not part of the so-called liberal media! He’ll suck up to McCain as usual.

Anyone who voted for Bush in the last two elections and votes for McCain should be arrested for treason. You’ve done more to damage this country than terrorist could dream. Show me a Republican, and I’ll show you a criminal.

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said this to the Politico about the increased media scrutiny of the campaign’s factual claims: “We’re running a campaign to win. And we’re not too concerned about what the media filter tries to say about it.”
who needs the truth?

Hey Republicans: did you notice that the economy is going into meltdown mode. Your ideas are bankrupt!! You guys simply do not like reality, you just want to keep your images of grandeur in your mind no matter what the results of your policies. God help us if McCain wins. Our country can’t afford the price of more of the same economic policies.

So ABC offers a free hour of spin to McCain? Unless Obama agrees to their terms and McCain’s on where to meet?
Nice going. Obama should get some other network to do the same for him. If ABC and George want to blackmail anyone they should just come out and say it.

Posted by: Timelagged | September 14, 2008, 10:17 pm 10:17 pm

McCain will tell the crowd over and over how he was a POW, what a boring meeting it wil be.

Posted by: depravedmaniac | September 14, 2008, 10:55 pm 10:55 pm

McCain still harps about Obama not going to all the town hall meeting with him. Well mabey McCain doesn’t understand that Obama isn’t his boy and he’s running his own campaign and they have their own seperate schedule and if McCain wants to be along with Obama mabey he ought to join in on Obama’s tour.

Posted by: ronnieraygun | September 14, 2008, 10:57 pm 10:57 pm

Of course Sen. McCain will be happy to do this, as Obama runs scared. McCain has asked several times for 10 town halls with BO and he runs scared, like he did with Hillary and debates.
He will never agree to take a mixed audience without scripted questions…it is one of his huge weaknesses. McCain gets in the crowd and is great at off the cuff.
Looking forward to McCain’s town hall just as I did Hillary’s.
HILLARY SUPPORTER FOR McCAIN before PALIN!

John and Cindy McCain looked very patriotic visiting ground zero, hand in hand. Barack Hussein Obama looked like a guy who couldn’t get a date to the prom. Where was Michelle Obama? Does she really hate America so much that she celebrates the terrorist attacks of 9/11 at home in a turban?
Barack Hussein Obama and his anti-American wife spent 20 years listening to spews of hatred and “God Damn America” in a so-called church of God. Apparently Michelle believes America caused 9/11. All these radical teachings have been instilled in their brains by Jeremiah Wright.
For over two decades Obama turned to, was counseled by, and formed a strong personal bond with a minister who is a divider and a hatemonger. This simply cannot effectively act as a unifying force for the USA.
The best result out of Obama’s campaign may turn out to be progress in the form of all American cultures accepting that each individual, regardless of race, is to be rightfully held accountable for their actions, affiliations, as well as the doctrines that they adhere to and cultivate in others.
The embarrassing litany of anarchy, filth and hate that Rev. Wright spews should not be excused away as simply “the way our people speak”. Wrong is wrong and is not to be determined on a sliding scale according to skin color.
Obama has told too many lies. He has too many ties to anti-Americans and terrorists.
Have you thought about what might happen if Obama really is a closet Muslim and becomes president?
Vote for John McCain in November. Country first!

Obama plays games with soldiers’ lives–to gain political advantage. According to Amir Taheri in the NY Post:
While campaigning in public for a speedy withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, Sen. Barack Obama has tried in private to persuade Iraqi leaders to delay an agreement on a draw-down of the American military presence.
According to Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Obama made his demand for delay a key theme of his discussions with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad in July.
“He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington,” Zebari said in an interview.
Obama: Ruthless cynical manipulation you can believe in.
