Two Other Maverick Republicans Not So Psyched About the GOP Ticket
Former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan attended Sen. Barack Obama’s Beverly Hills fundraiser the other night.
KCAL-TV caught up with the Republican there.
Calling Obama a "much more open person," Riordan said when he was mayor of L.A. from 1993 to 2001, he "had dealings with McCain where I didn’t respect him."
In Nebraska, where this presidential race may be decided (more on that later), the Omaha World-Herald caught up with Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., who endorsed McCain in 2000.
Of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Hagel said, "She doesn’t have any foreign policy credentials. You get a passport for the first time in your life last year? I mean, I don’t know what you can say. You can’t say anything.
"I think they ought to be just honest about it and stop the nonsense about, ‘I look out my window and I see Russia and so, therefore, I know something about Russia,’" said Hagel, an opponent of the war in Iraq and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "That kind of thing is insulting to the American people."
Hagel added, "In a world that is so complicated, so interconnected and so combustible, you really got to have some people in charge that have some sense of the bigger scope of the world. I think that’s just a requirement."
And would Palin qualify?
"I think it’s a stretch to, in any way, to say that she’s got the experience to be president of the United States," Hagel said.

wow, repubs are jumping like rats off a sinking McPalin ship. that “town hall” yesterday was a joke and only underscored how pathetic this ticket has become. McPalin actually got chants of “O BAMA, O BAMA” when he visited the GM plant yesterday.

Hagel, now there is a republican for you. His lack of endorsement is a positive thing.
Lets look at qualifications. Palin speaks well especially with a teleprompter and a few years of executive obscure work experience. Obama speaks well especially with a teleprompter and a few years of obscure work experience.
There is going to be trouble if this comparison continues. OK, and we also have two fossils running.

McCain chose Palin for only one reason, she is a women. He wanted to reel in Hillarys women.
He thought we were all stupid enough to get sucked into her gender and not look at her policy.WRONG…
She is running on her ego at this point. She has no idea what is going on in the Federal Governemnt.( Wasilla is a LONG way from DC).
And now she is getting caught in some lies. Her populariy is dropping like a rock in water.

Samantha,
We have a choice between Barack Obama and John McCain. We have many important issues facing this country — the economy, health care, education, the war in Iraq, terrorism, I can go on and on.
Please try to focus on this issues. Who care where Michelle Obama is? Maybe she’s out campaigning. Maybe she’s back home tending to matters there with her children. She has a young family.

This election is pretty much over. Obama will win come November, and I am a republican delegate who supports Ron Paul. The republicans will lose because they have made a mess of things. Of course the dems are almost as guilty. Maybe we need term limits and a rule that only 25% of the government can be composed of lawyers.

Samantha,
Thanks for the clarification. I remember that not too long ago Michelle gave an interview after one of the hurricanes. She was helping with the relief effort. She indicated that this was an important volunteer effort for her. You can most likely Google your question to find out what issues would be important to her because I know that she has talked it.
take care

With five polls in a row showing Obama/Biden regaining the lead, the RCP National Average now shows a 1.7% advantage for the Dems. I think it is fair to say that the Palin bubble has bursted.

So Blue in Michigan I care about her opinions and I would like to see more. I may change my vote. If I do I want to see some representation as a black woman. I have a foster daughter so I would like to know how she feels about her role as first lady. With Hillary and Palin gone Michelle will be a visible woman with a lot of influence. I would like to hear her views. If she is staying home can I at least hear her reasoning on doing this?

That shows to prove who is more concern with the country. Example: Obama chose Biden (qualified to be President if need to) – McCain chose Palin (unqualified, not experienced enough, terrible choice). Who do we trust more? We trust those that surround themselves with better people than they are. Think about that for a minute.

Ok – lay it on me, cuz I must be as stupid as the Obamabots say. In no way do I believe that Palin is an expert on foreign policy. Her job hasn’t required it of her – until being nominated for VP.
That being said, what exactly is the basis of Obama’s expertise on foreign policy? And don’t give me the “speech in Springfield” line – that’s not experience.
I eagerly await my enlightenment.

If Michelle were standing by Barack “two inches” away as Cindy McCain is standing by Mc, Obama would be accused of Michelle running his campaign. Cindy even reads Mc’s notes as he is reading them — she is that close. I can’t understand why Mc can’t stand on his own. Also, Cindy made the comment “we (John) discuss everything, everything”. If Michelle had made that statement, Rush, Sean, McCain camp, et al, would have really have been all over the airwaves with the comment. Cindy — no one commented. Michelle is a smart woman and I have no doubt that she will be an asset when her husband is elected President.

Yesterday, Michelle Obama was in Richmond, VA, attending a forum where economic problems faced by many women and families in a roundtable discussion was discussed. So Riordan was term limited out of mayoral office in 2001 and apparently between then and now (where he is now as a restaurateur) Riordan enjoyed a part-time hobby of grossly insulting six year old girls. Who cares what he thinks? And Chuck Hagel has always loved the Democratic party more than the Republican which is fine but he’s just too chicken to call himself what he is – a Democrat. Hagel was, afterall, rumored to be a possible vp pick for lord and master Barack Obama (Obama went with Biden – smart choice Barack, how’s that working out for you?) so the fact Hagel supports Obama – DUH, really???? And Hagel’s not running for re-election to his Senate seat – so maybe he’s looking for a cabinet post for Obama-baby (How long do unemployment beneftis last, Chuckie?). Meantime and in the real world – Donald Trump yesterdat asserted his support for the McCain Palin ticket (before he’d been a supporter of Hillary Clinton). And, Hillary’s major fundraiser Lynn Forester de Rothschild – a Hillary supporter and a member of the DNC platform committee -hss publicly announced her support for McCain Palin because she has some REAL issues with Obama’s competency and extremism (I mean who with an IQ over two doesn’t?). So you guys on the left can be endorsed by the career-challenged but McCain/Palin continue to pick up major and substantial support as they will continue to do – especially as more and more dirty OBama tricks come to light. Oh well, Obama – enjoy the company of your has been supporters- At least you’ll hve some great company come November 5th – all the losers can hang out together.

Well, Neil1785 and geevil, too – you certainly do have a lot of “evidence” against Obama and his associates, don’t you? I would suggest you turn this information over to the FBI, CIA, NSA, Homeland Security and any other security agencies you can think of as it all seems so nefarious, insidious, sinister and dangerous to all us Americans that you really should be a good citizen and save our country from this harmful choice we are about to make! Don’t you think you should do that and not leave it up to the mainstream media, as evidently they are not doing their jobs, according to you? I am sure these other government agencies will get on it right away since you are so convincing in your arguments against Barack Obama, who by the way, has a middle name and it is “Hussein” and let’s not forget, his last name is just one little bitty letter away from Osama. Gee, that’s real scary stuff!!!

Obama has met with the heads of state of countries in the Middle East and Europe. He’s met with commanders in Iraq and Afghanistan. He’s traveled and worked with Sen. Lugar to secure loose nuclear weapons in Russia. We know Obama’s policies and we know nothing of Gov. Palin’s foreign policy experience and neither does she as she has publicly stated she has not given Iraq much thought.

And by the way, Neil. You left out of Obama’s “thin” resume that he also served as a senior lecturer at the University of Chicago for nearly 10 years teaching Constitutional Law, and that he graduated Magna Cum Laude (i.e. With Great Honors) from Harvard Law School. The affirmative action argument might have gotten him into college, but it didn’t allow him to graduate Magna Cum Laude or get elected editor of the Harvard Law Review by his peers, either. On the other hand, Sarah Palin’s education credentials are stellar – she went to 6 (six) different colleges before graduating. Now, there’s experience for ya’.

It takes a brain to be the US president and that is what is lacking in the “all white” ticket. The republicans has to come to term with the fact that McCain who has a foot in his grave has made a serious mistake by taking as running mate Sarah Palin who has not been able to manage properly her own family and has extreem positions on social and religious issues. After Palin became the VP candidate, McCain’s lawyers took over her side.
Since then, the refusal to answer questions has stumped everyone. McCain talks about open government, but this isn’t open.
When Palin was first charged, she invited the investigation and said she had nothing to hide.
The bipartisan vote to investigate Palin was 14-0.
The committee in charge of the investigation is made up of 3 Republicans and 2 Democrats, but this committee recently voted to keep the investigation going.
Just like with Nixon, when politicians keep changing their story about an investigation, they are clearly hiding something rotten.

Barbara writes of Hillary’s supporter “Rothschild” who is supporting McCain. A woman who splits her time between her homes in London and NY. She also claimed her supporter of Mccain to be a personal decision so it’s quite contradictory for her to then hold a media blitz. McCain has a significant defector, Elizabeth Drew. Drew knows McCain VERY well as she wrote a pro-McCain book and has followed him for many years. Drew writes this of McCain in Politico today: “McCain’s recent conduct of his campaign – his willingness to lie repeatedly (including in his acceptance speech) and to play Russian roulette with the vice-presidency, in order to fulfill his long-held ambition – has reinforced my earlier, and growing, sense that John McCain is not a principled man.
In fact, it’s not clear who he is.”

Of course, his father had a lot of pull, and a lot of money besides. Imagine that, a Master in Business Administration to George W. Bush! Can you believe how much worse this country could be if Dubya hadn’t gotten an MBA. Whoa, don’t even want to go there! And McCain graduated from Annapolis 4th from the bottom of his Class. Yes, let’s just appoint a “Commission” to investigate just about every mess this country finds itself in. Spend a few million more dollars of taxpayers’ money that we don’t have, and a few more months or years wasting time, and come up with answers that we already figured out, and then let’s not implement the suggestions (like this current administration hasn’t yet implemented the 9/11 Commission’s recomendations) and then what?? We’re still getting nowhere with all these Commissions. How about appointing a Special Prosecutor, like the Republicans did to investigate Bill Clinton’s lying about having an affair. Two wasted years by Congress and Millions of Taxpayers Dollars later, and then the Republicans want to accuse Clinton of doing nothing the last two years of his Presidency? Well, he was slightly occupied defending himself against impeachment! But that’s how the game is played, isn’t it. “Got you last.” The Repubs never got over Nixon being impeached and resigning from office and they have been after the Democrats ever since. Unfortunately, this isn’t grammar school. We need to grow up and start running this country, not ruining this country! “Got you last” is too destructive.

Just to bolster your argument for Obama. He didn’t list his race on his application to Harvard, so affirmative action would not come into play. He got in on his own merits.
Brooklyn,
You forgot to mention the financing loophole McCain’s group is using to get more money than is allowed when using public financing. There is a limit on contributing to the campaign, a limit to contributing to the committee, and I think one for the general election fund. I wonder where the majority of the money from all three of those categories are going?

God, where this Republican party took us! From budget surplus to deep recession immediately in going to war with a country that was not a direct threat to US security!
Palin’s Alaska does not have the same bread and butter issues like the rest of America. But Alaska is selfish enough not to share their good location and therefore, oil riches, with the rest of the country. Of course, from the lobbying and pork barrels practices of her predecessors, the same Republican Party, she was still greedy to do the same=she got more pork money per citizen than Illinois. The country is in such financial mess, let politicians be more truthful now. Without politicians’ help this present mess would not be here.

Affirmative action might get you INTO Harvard.
It does nothing about how you Graduate from Harvard. He got graduated with Magna Cum Laude. And was selected by his peers to be President of the HLR.
And it’s not even proven he got into Harvard through affirmative action. And if he did, it would be more proof that it actually is worth expanding on, it might increase the possibility that more people graduate with Magna cum laude.

The GOP has set up joint fundraising ventures with McCain. So he can do things like $70K a plate fundraisers. McCain gets very little of that money (he can only raise funds for accounting purposes). The rest goes to the RNC, NRCC & the NRSC.

|CORRECTION; Obama didn’t put any race down when he applied to go to Harvard. He did not get poor grades ar Columbia anyway. So you are mistaken.
But I’m sure the McCain/Palin campaign will appreciate you spreading false stories for them.
By the way , it was McCain who only was admitted into the Naval Academy because of Affirmative Action for the wealthy and the well connected. (they just call it Legacy admission)

I’ve been bored by the ongoing fascination with grades and schools of the candidates. If you believe the MSM hype, the past has no bearing on the candidates’ qualifications. Obama’s past associations don’t matter…McCain’s past independent actions don’t count. Um, ok. But, apparently, we should get excited about whether Obama entered Harvard law via Affirmative Action…or what his Columbia GPA was. Really?
Willem, you bring an interesting point about – AA may have gotten Obama into Harvard, but didn’t give him a Magna Cum Laude. Then, you slide right into the absurd by saying maybe extending AA ‘…might increase the possibility that more people graduate with Magna cum laude…’ Wow – you’ve made quite the leap that AA has a causal relationship with MCL. And you base this on…???
Let’s take a step back on the MCL chest-thumping. First of all, it’s not the highest honor – Summa Cum Laude is. Every school using these labels have different policies. But, go google Harvard Law. Summa Cum Laude is granted based on specific grades earned. The next level – MCL – is granted to the NEXT 10% of the students (i.e. after the SCL students). Put another way, Obama graduated in the top 10% of his Harvard class – at best. Since there isn’t a percentage limit to granting SCL honors, the MCL percentage can slide significantly. Personally, I haven’t seen the MCL and SCL counts for Obama’s class. I’m not discounting his achievement – but let’s not take it out of context and make it something it isn’t. MCL = the second honors, and is assigned to 10% of the class.

“since he never had a meeting for the committe he chaired on Foreign Affairs where’s his cred. NOT ONE MEETING as Hillary pointed out.”
Its true that Obama did not as chair call a meeting for his foreign affairs subcommittee to discuss Afghanistan. But he did attend hearings on Afghanistan with the full Foreign Relations committee (chaired by Joe Biden)
John McCain as ranking Republican could not be bothered to show up to any Afghanistan hearings(there were 8) over the last 2 years at the Armed Services committee.
Maybe that’s why he has such a low priority on going after the people who attacked on on 9/11 instead focusing on people who did not attack us in Iraq.

IN hasn’t gone blue in 44 years.
That it is even up for grabs is a testament to the candidate and his amazing campaign operation.

Do John McCain, Sarah Palin or conservative republicans respect the moral foundations of our country? The U.S. Constitution is abused by conservative republicans at every turn.
U.S. Constitution: Amendment I – Freedom of Religion
Because of conservative republicans, your tax dollars are funding religious groups you may not agree with. To add insult to injury, conservative appointed judges have ruled that you do not have a right to challenge this expenditure.
Amendment IV – Search and seizure
Under the guise of court action against abortion, Conservative republicans had John Ashcroft subpoena all the medical records of literally thousands of women like you and members of your family. Conservative republicans invade your privacy every day by browsing your email and phone records. Unfortunately for all of us, they don’t appear to care about our U.S. constitution, and they certainly don’t care about your privacy.
Amendment X – Powers of the States and People
John McCain and conservative republicans have tried consistently to overturn States Laws. They used your hard earned tax dollars to destroy the will of the people of Oregon, and the famous “Death with Dignity” law; they lost, but undoubtedly will try again. Conservative republicans and John McCain do not respect States Rights. If your state votes for something conservatives don’t agree with they will use federal powers to overturn it regardless of how you and your fellow voters feel.
Amendment VIII – Cruel and Unusual punishment
Would you rather die, or support a government which supported and sanctioned torture? The founding fathers would rather have died. The founding fathers were proud to fight and die for our government: A government which specifically outlaws cruel and unusual punishment. Conservatives don’t agree with this philosophy. Conservatives are at odds with our founding fathers on this score, and too many others to count.
John McCain, Sarah Palin, and the conservative republicans have already gone too far in destroying the moral foundations of our country. I urge you to keep this in mind in the coming election as we rebuild our nation together by voting for Obama, who stated that in his first 100 days he would eliminate all of Bush’s unconstitutional signing orders as a start.

Lots of people want to dis Chuck Hagel for his comments on Palin (“He’s a liberal”, “he’s bitter”, “he’s a sore loser”, etc.) Truth is, though a long time McCain friend and backer in 2000, Chuck’s never gone off the tracks of the “straight talk express”– So he’s still able to call it the way it is– Which was what I used to love about John McCain.

Whatever happened to McCain? Then came Palin. I just can’t forget that bemused look on her face dealing with the question of the Bush Doctrine. She was totally lost. The answer that she can see Russia was just as vacuous. All this was played to proper effect on SNL. Unfortunately, McCain is in the middle poilitically(a place that I like) but had to sell out to the extreme right wing to have a chance in his mind. He does have the Bubba vote which means you can add 3-5% to his side on any poll but he is at great risk depending on just how badly this Palin selection seeps in. After all, it’s not unthinkable that she would have to deal with an unfriendly Pakistan, Russia and others.

Jake, I wanted to take a moment to let you know that I find you refreshing. While most of your colleagues are most assuredly “in the tank” so to speak, if you are, it doesn’t show. Thank you for remembering the creed, basic Journalism 101. Your code of ethics evidently remains intact. I doubt your Ombudsman has to peruse your work often if at all. I wish with all of my heart that your fellow journalists remembered their oath to present fair and unbiased reports without personal ideology and analogy, but you have, and for that I thank you profusely.

Obama is trying to delay troops from coming home from Iraq.
Such a “patriot”.
How is Obama going to do in the debates when he can’t have a teleprompter?
Posted by: Angie | September 18, 2008, 2:43 pm 2:43 pm
Angie,
Debates are Obama’s format. He should do great. I would be more worried about McCain in the debate. This is not where he shines. Remember he is better suited to town hall meetings. Maybe if McCain used a teleprompter he wouldn’t make so many gaffs on the campaign trail. And shame on you for saying that Obama or anyone would wish what is happening with the economy on americans. That is no different than if is someone said that McCain is hoping for an international situation to boost his ratings. Oh that’s right someone from McCain’s camp did say (earlier in the election) that what McCain needs is an international incident to boost him in the polls.

And while in Iraq he essentially told the Iraqis to not enter a withdrawal plan with the US until after the November election.
AND a campaign spokeswoman confirmed that he did this.
THAT means he violated the Logan Act. Therefore not only is he a criminal he is also a traitor.

Typical White Elephant – you are sighting an OPINION piece from a conservative paper by a man whose credibility has been debunked by every reputable news organization.
Amir Taheri is a notorious fraudster. He was once powerful under the Shah’s regime but now is an Iranian exile and neocon shill. Taheri has been exposed repeatedly for simply making things up to fit his political agenda. For example, in May 2006 he published a report in the National Post (Canada) falsely stating that a new Iranian law required Jews to wear special clothing and yellow patches to identify themselves in public. The paper had to retract the story, blaming Taheri, and apologize for it. Taheri’s reputation, already extremely low in 2006, has been in the dirt ever since. – unbossed

GOP MOM you talk of a woman who splits her time between her homes in NY and London. Not real in touch with Americans and she also referred to those middle-class Americans as “rednecks”. You can have her.
On the other hand, McCain has a significant defector, Elizabeth Drew.

Is that what underachievers are talking about these days? I guess the fact that he was able to attend college using academic scholarships doesn’t exactly “negate” what you’ve been taught. What about graduating with honors from Havard?
Let’s be honest. Obama has more intelligence in one strand of hair than the sum of your entire family. (lol) We get it. It’s not that he’s Black, it’s because he’s an intelligent, successful, educated Black man that gives you pause.
How sad and little you must be.
