WH to Stephanopoulos: ‘This is a Bullet You Only Fire Once’

ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos Reports: Facing congressional opposition, President Bush will deliver a prime-time address, speaking directly to the nation on the current financial crisis and the details of his $700 billion rescue plan.

A senior White House official tells ABC News the president will make clear in his 9pm remarks that the "costs of not acting are far greater than the costs of acting."

The speech, which runs between 12 and 14 minutes long, will reach out to both parties and be non-partisan in tone. "Democrats won’t need a response," the official says.

Bush’s address to the nation has been carefully timed. Says the senior official, "This is a bullet you only fire once."

During an afternoon press briefing White House press secretary Dana Perino said the reason for the timing is that Congress is closer to a solution and the president feels he should speak directly to the American people and Congress.

"Everyone will tune in tonight because we are facing a once in a century crisis in our financial markets," Perino said.

By the time Bush speaks, the White House hopes to have a package ready for a vote. The White House is hopeful, but not convinced, the votes are there for passage — they hope the president’s speech puts votes over the top in their favor.

Bush’s speech will be delivered from the State Floor of the White House.

Once in a life time crisis and they want to give these same jokers that created this mess $700 billion. Boy know that makes sense! I say get the people who are facing foreclosure and negotiate a payment that they can afford, a little is better than none then write down their loans, most were predator loans anyway, and they should take what they can get.

Once in a century? 1930′s was only 78 years ago Bush its now twice in the same century you Republicans have screwed up the US economy and by the same means deregulation, and same crapola talking points of trickle down economics.

I honestly don’t know why we would allow Bush or anyone else who was closely involved with the mess we have now, to be anywhere near that 700 Billion dollars. I saw that the FBI are now investigating the whole situation and that some people will be going to prison, including people from Washington.

Unfortunately, we find it difficult now to trust anything this man has to say. He cried “wolf” too many times and consequently, no one believes him. What he says may be true and very important for all of us to believe and understand. But this is what happens when you lie to the people over and over and over again. This has indeed been a very difficult 8 years. Can’t wait for January 20, 2009!!!

This is the problem when you have a president who has cried wolf one time too many. You lose all credibility and you lose you’re ability to rally the country when you might really need to.
I think this might just be a time when he really needs to, but his ability to do so is extremely limited.

The problem I have with this bailout is what Bernanke and Paulson are NOT telling us. And that is on purpose. They wont tell us who gets the money and how much . They dont seem interested in helping the homeowner, just the banks who had their party and now cry the blues . They simply say that they misbehaved and its so dire we have to help them or the whole thing will crack up. There is no mention of crimminal charges against these clowns at all. It really does appear that Paulson and Bernanke fear that if these idiots arent bailed out, and they have royal authority to control it, the public outrage will get so bad the FBI SEC will have to step in and start arresting people. I believe Paulson and Bernanke want to cover up dozens of terrible secrets for friends on wall st and abroad.

The recent ECONOMIC problems are NOT some “POOR GUYS BUYING WHAT THEY COULD NOT AFFORD”.
Typical that the CONS that SET UP this CRISIS would “BLAME THE VICTIM”.
At least with KEATING 5 and ENRON we STILL had the NERVE, OUTRAGE and ABILITY to INVESTIGATE,BRING CHARGES and PROSECUTE some of the TOP MANIPULATORS that destroyed so many ordinary citizen”s lives!
As it looks NOW the FAT CATS that used LOBBYISTS to push through SUCH DIRTY DEALINGS will “GET AWAY WITH IT” this time.
Guess “Financial Crisis Fatigue” has set in.
So many of the American people are acting like a BEATEN HOUSEWIFE who STAYS WITH the MONSTER that beats and abuses her!
It”s been a long and convoluted CON JOB based on SELFISHNESS and GREED by people who ALREADY had MORE THAN THEIR SHARE of the Nation”s WEALTH yet in their BOTTOMLESS PIT OF GREED – Wanted MORE!
They wanted it ALL AT ANY COST even up to and Including the DESTRUCTION of the American People and their way of life!
So, this TINY SLICE of people AT THE TOP “worked” over decades to STEAL the ENTIRE WEALTH of our great Nation slowly inserting laws that FAVORED them, buying politicians, destroying leaders they could not buy and through careful media control and education “mismanagement” -DUMBING DOWN millions.

Hey Barney,
Will the real Don Knotts please stand up?
Right, this is not a joke, sorry. All the complaints, warranted or not, still only amount to Monday quarterbacking from all of us brilliant problem identifiers.
I say give them the 700B, keep the markets working; most of what the markets do is for all our benefit- if your anti-business, you must not want a job? Of course we need regs, but they can’t force risky policies, like bad mortgage terms just to show we “care” about everyone having a home (some people are greedy slackers that feel entitled to the benefits the rest of us generate with our sacrifice and risk taking).
See you back in Mayberry- One more Dem. for McCain:)

People were told of weapons of mass destruction and our troops were rushed into a war that we are now borrowing money to finance, now we are having to bailout Wall Street because of an oversight and deregulation. This is not all of Bushes doing but since he and the republicans have had the majority rule for at least the seven years before democrats came in what were the main objectives of the republicans all that Bush could do was veto bills. This economy is having a terrible affect on our housing and this was going on for sometime yet noone did anything, when people started losing jobs nothing was done, these were early warning signs that should have sent up great big red flags,we don’t need anymore of people sleeping while on duty, and we don’t need more Bush McCain scare tactics,we need strong leadership that does not have to hide behind closed doors and who will show the American people they have concern for our well being this going to be something our grandchildren and their chldren will be paying for.Enough of the secret society of the Bush regime.

700Billion$
So tell me, now that we’ve become a Socialist Economy, how much will our taxes go up?
You cant keep borrowing money from the Chinese forever, sooner or later, they expect repayment, or at least interest payments. Or you declare bankruptcy.
The other option is to start massive inflation, Gas $1000 a gallon anyone?
$700B just does not come out of thin air, like the other $700B the the war has cost so far.

How did it happen that when Clinton left office there was a surplus yet the Republicans still decry Democrats as the “spend” party. The blatant attempt to buy off the American people with “tax rebates” that drained resources was only one of the many cynical strategies of this current administration who took the reins of gov’t with the slogan “Anything but Clinton”! Now they point the finger and say this all began in the Clinton years! Get real, it started with Daddy Bush, just like the Iraq war is GWB Jr’s incredibly expensive, in terms of lives and money, therapy for his psychological problems with his father. I pray Obama has the courage and strength to lead us out of this mess, but I can’t help wondering if, just maybe, we might have benefitted more from another Clinton in the White House, who for all her flaws showed she had the guts and fire to withstand incredible pressure from members of her own political party even. And, by the way, is anyone else as disgusted as I am at the truly cynical choice of Palin as Veep? The Republican leadership is so moronically chauvinistic they figure any woman will win the supporters of Hillary Clinton. Even one so beset with scandal, politically and personal, she has succeeded in drawing attention away from the rapidly degenerating dementia of McCain…or maybe that was the plan all along.

R U People For REAL!!!
Do you have any idea what a complete financial melt down would look like in the real world???
Here, let me paint you a picture…
You pull into a gas station and wand your card to fill up, machine says ‘see attendant’. You see the attendant and he says “dude, I don’t know what’s happening, all credit cards are being rejected. I called my boss and he said tell the customers it is cash only.”
Next, you go to an ATM, funny, it is not working either. You go to another, same thing. You call your bank, they do not answer. You drive to your bank and their is a mob gathering. Banks closed.
You decide to hurry over to the grocery store. Their is a mob inside and the police have been called. ATM, debit and credit cards are all being refused at checkout. Cash only is the cry.
You go back to work and your boss is ashen faced. He has just been told that the company may be out of business within days or HOURS due to a lack of operating funds. He has even heard a rumor that payroll may be in jeapordy.
Welcome to day 1 of the 2nd Great Depression.
Brother, can you spare a dime?

The top people have known what was coming down on this for months. First, they want all the money and with no remedy by the courts regarding their decisions; second, it is this decision has to be made Friday; third, McCain is lined up with Bush to push before people know whats going on in order to make himself appear to be a leader and up his tally in the polls on economic leadership. It stinks from beginning to end! And cancel the debate, which only takes a few hours at best McCain is hysterical and perhaps also a big time political opportunist, but certainly not a steady hand at the wheel.

Posted by: L.White | September 24, 2008, 4:15 pm 4:15 pm

A “give loans to the poor” strategy started under Clinton, not Bush. The Democrats are just as much to blame as the Republicans. To blame George W Bush for all of our financial problems is inaccurate. You say McCain = Bush. This is not true. You don’t know that Obama has a better solution to this problem. He talks about regulation, but who said McCain is against regulation? McCain is for accountability and his policies do not mirror GWB. The democrats have succeeded in convincing a lot of people that the so called Bush/McCain/Republican machine is responsible for our fiscal problems. It’s too bad because it is factually incorrect.

How about this…instead of giving billions of dollars to the IDIOTS that caused this problem, they swallow their losses like REAL men and accept their losses and give every single one of their clients the titles to their homes, business’ and loans and call it even….AMERICA will not fail if the bank does, be real men and give the titles over to the American people.

Posted by: Neo2012 | September 24, 2008, 4:28 pm 4:28 pm

WMD’s anyone? In the first place why should the American citizens buy another pig in a poke (with or without lipstick) from this man. He has continually lied to the American public. So how do we know he is not lying again. He started his presidency as a staunch right wing nationalist, and now that his friends are in trouble; he becomes a socialist and wants the US citizens to bail them out after they screwed the whole country. I was taught to be responsible for my own financial well being, as this was the American way. When wall street was allowed to treat this country like the wild west, I didn’t hear anything from Bush or congress about reigning them in. I do not feel that the taxpayers should be bailing out corporations, Wall St etc. I was under the impression that this was a free enterprise system. If businesses had the ability to make money then they prospered, if not they went under and where replaced by another business that could make it. CEO’s and others should not be rewarded for porking the country. The stock market is no longer a gamble when people invest, it is a guaranteed profit now. These continuing bailouts, gives them the attitude that they can do whatever they wish, and the taxpayer will foot the bill, and so far they are right. This is going to be another savings and loan thing. The taxpayers will pay the bill, and no one will be at fault; no one will go to jail. The US taxpayer are still paying for what happened in the savings and loans mess and Enron etc. When is it going to end? When there are 2 classes the super rich and the poor? If this turns into another depression then fine. We survived it before and we can again, but to reward greed and corruption is not right. The worst part about this; beside the bailout, is that there is no guarantee that the we wont go into a depression even after spending 700 billion to a trillion and a half or more. I say no to the bailout. This has got to stop.

Oil company makes 1 billion and Washington holds hearings demanding answers. 700 Billion to buy “toxic” loans and no hearing. If it were only dems the repubs would call for hearings. If it were repubs the dems would demand hearings. It is both thus no hearings. First step should be to fire and change everyone involved. Then set it up so the market can regulate it. There shouldn’t be a company so large it alone can tank the economy. Break up Mac and Mae. Break up these companies and jail the crooks.

The Presidency is a VERY complex job,
and requires the abiity to multitask.
If McCain wants to abandon his campaign
now that his weaknesses are apparent,
that’s his decision (or perhaps excuse?)
But the Debate is Set. If he doesn’t show up, he loses period.
Barack Obama is not panicking and jumping all over the place. He is methodical, and will be very effective
in being a partner that will extract
a fair and reasonable solution to this
horrendous financial collapse.
He will certainly show up for the scheduled debate. I am sure he is prepared and flexible enough to discuss
BOTH foreign affairs, and the financial
crisis. In fact it’s a most unusual
opportunity to see both men debate under pressure.

I have to admire the brilliant move by the McCain campaign, suggesting that the debate be postponed. Most people will see through this, but it’s a valiant effort at playing what is an increasingly bad hand. My hat’s off to his campaign team – this was a beautiful play.

Do not trust anything Bush says. Do not trust anything Paulson says. They helped put us in this spot. If we do a bail out whos next? Auto makers. They will be standing in line for their bail out. This is nothing short than nationalization. Go to GOP.Com and one of the things they say they stand for is no bail outs and no nationalization. They are trying to bail out the rich and wealthy once again and sticking it to us regular Joes.
This McCain thing is just a political move and he says if we they do not make a decision he will not debate. So the GOP wants to force a rushed bail out when we are talking a trillion dollors and protection for all these crooks including Bush. McCain, Bush, Rove, Paulson and the rest of them should be banned from being in any power to make any decisions.

In case you didn’t know, your congress has a lower appoval rating than Bush. We the people know who are reponsible for this mess and many will get tossed out come November…. follow the money trail from Freddie May and Fannie Mac and you’ll end up in the filthy back pockets of Senenator’s Obama, Dodd and Clinton, etc.

Tim McCain and DE-regulation are hand in hand there are so many clips of him saying how he is for it and how good it has been for the economy

First The Savings and Loan and Now Wall Street. No Maverick. Corrupt McCain.
From the Wikipedia. Unlike McCain’s Lies, This is The Truth. Same McCain, Different Failure. Our Country cannot afford McCain/Palin.
The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The five senators, Alan Cranston (D-CA), Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ), John Glenn (D-OH), John McCain (R-AZ), and Donald W. Riegle (D-MI), were accused of improperly aiding Charles H. Keating, Jr., chairman of the failed Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of an investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB). The core allegation of the Keating Five affair is that Keating had made contributions of about $1.3 million to various U.S. Senators, and he called on those Senators to help him resist regulators. The regulators backed off, to later disastrous consequences.

First The Savings and Loan and Now Wall Street. No Maverick. Corrupt McCain.
From the Wikipedia. Unlike McCain’s Lies, This is The Truth. Same McCain, Different Failure. Our Country cannot afford McCain/Palin.
McCain and Keating had become personal friends following their initial contacts in 1981,[10] and McCain was the closest socially to Keating of the five senators.[21] Like DeConcini, McCain considered Keating a constituent as he lived in Arizona.[18] Between 1982 and 1987, McCain had received $112,000 in political contributions from Keating and his associates.[22] In addition, McCain’s wife Cindy McCain and her father Jim Hensley had invested $359,100 in a Keating shopping center in April 1986, a year before McCain met with the regulators. McCain, his family, and their baby-sitter had made nine trips at Keating’s expense, sometimes aboard Keating’s jet. Three of the trips were made during vacations to Keating’s opulent Bahamas retreat at Cat Cay. McCain did not pay Keating (in the amount of $13,433) for some of the trips until years after they were taken, when he learned that Keating was in trouble over Lincoln.[6][23]
Just as the Savings and Loan Failed, so now does Wall Street and the Mortgage and Banking Institutions. McCain can’t try and blame Obama for the 1989 problem. He has been responsible for so much failure in this economy. Treating Wall Street Like they did the Savings and Loan.

You know all this talk of our economy crumbling, our retirement disappearing, our families suffering, and so on has been happening for a while little by little. I’ve personally spoke to republicans who say that they are not all for themselves (get what you can take) or Steel from the poor give more back to the rich)who say that those who suffer just are not trying hard enough. Well I want just one of those people to live my life a single mother of 4 girls working 1 job because I can’t get 2. Can’t get any government assistance because funds are not available or I make too much. (Sorry sweethearts Wal-Mart don’t pay that well) Anyways back to my point I want one of those money hungry republicans to get off their high horse and live my life for 6 mos. Do my job, pay my bills, and see if they can handle it. The people who are suffering the most are not suffering because we don’t work hard enough (cause we are the reason they can sit on their high horse) (Cause without the little bottom feeders there is no big man to feed us more BS)we are suffering because every chance we get to succeed in life is taken from us to do things like bailout wallstreet and etc. We did not create this mess. We didn’t ask the prez. to go to war with a country who wants us gone just to take our hard earned money and rebuild it. But we are doing that so instead of helping the people in our own country, giving our elderly what they deserve, or putting money into the schools for our children we are helping better a country who is just sitting back waiting for the right time to strike back. You know I hear so many people say our children are our future so be good to them. What are we doing for them right now! Sitting back to watch them starve to death, be uneducated, and struggling with life just so a few people in wallstreet and big oil and sit on their rump and enjoy their satisfaction knowing it’s not them. It’s not them so why do they care? The Prez. Isn’t that little man on the bottom and quite frankly never has been. Daddy has made sure of that. But as a young American myself, I can’t help but to say unfortunately this year I’m not sure I will vote. I’m beginning to believe it’s all a rig anyway. But I sit and see all that’s going on and I wonder will it even help at this point. Why didn’t we impeach GWB. We as Americans wanted to impeach Clinton for getting a blow job from someone other than his wife (which all of us have done at some point in our life(weather we admit it or not)) yet we allow harm to be done to us by this prez. What did a blow job do to us? But as an American I am using the right given to me by my forefathers and saying this I see a bunch of people going into office that I don’t believe can fix whats happening. This is Why… Obama is somebodys puppet, saying everything we want to hear at just the right time and acting as if he understands all of our problems from the poor bottom feeders to the rich who are lining their pockets. NOBODY is that good. McCain has not even the decency to appear where he should be how can he run a country. And Ron Paul has some good ideas as do the rest running, but Ron Paul has some out there ideas. But as a final note if I had to vote today because between Obama and McCain they are way too iffy I would chose Ron Paul only because he maybe the person with the out the box mind and out there ideas, might, just might, get us Americans out there and out of these problems we face. We have allowed the President to screw everything up for OUR FUTURE. Then maybe Our FUTURE can help fix the problems. Get someone who is so out there he may just listen to us not just the other politicians or bigwigs at the top. I do apologize if I have offended anyone but this is my opinion. (And Yes I know what they say about opinions and I don’t care)I do understand this seems to be one jumbled mess but, so is our country. If I as a young American am so jumbled and confused imagine how the rest of our VOTING youth is feeling. How do we make an informed decision if we are not informed properly?

Is everyone stupid or am I the only one who remembers the S&L bailout of the early 90′s.
This new bailout is just a bigger ripoff of the taxpayers then the S&L one. The fatsats cheat, steal, lie and get wealthy, than when they go over the top, they whine too their counter parts, the crooks that run the govn’t, in turn they say the sky is falling and we have to bail out wall street=we get screwed again.
I say screw them, give me a front row seat to their offices so I can watch them jump and splat on the pavement.
Just another scam to make us pay for their greed, it’s time for another Boston Tea Party.

The US Government is behind 911 – Doctors in Physics & Science of major universities have proven it was an inside job – why is everyone so suprised that the US Government is now stealing $700 Billion from them? I don’t get it – The murder, lies, & stealing will continue until it is stopped. The only way to stop it is REVOLUTION. But that will never happen because everyone is too afraid to lose what little they have – so they will continue to be F’D over in hopes that they can keep the smallest shread of their way of life.

Kate,
You’re absolutely entitled to express your opinions. But voting for a candidate that has no chance won’t help solving our problems. Between the two viable candidates, it seems to me that we should not be helpless and should cast a vote that counts. I’m going for the one that has the intelligence and knowledge to at least NOT send us to another war at the costs of our children’s future and the one who has the wisdom to go against the War in Iraq in the first place. He was no puppet at that time and is still not if you listen to what he is saying now about bailout. He cannot solve all the problems, but at least he has kids like we do and deeply cares about his just we do. If nothing else, here is the man who gave up the high offers after his Columbia degree and went to be a community organizer and did make a huge difference there.
