An Apology

On "Good Morning America" this a.m., I misspoke.

I meant to say that, after a bruising primary battle, President Bill Clinton finally hit the campaign trail WITH Senator Barack Obama.

What I said, mistakenly, was that he finally hit the campaign trail FOR Barack Obama, which is not accurate. The former president has been campaigning for Obama for weeks. Last night was the first joint campaign appearance they made.

My apologies to the former president, and to anyone whom I misinformed. It was an accident, and I regret the error.

Maybe you were right to begin with. If he hits the campaign with Obama, that could bruise That One and we all know how easily he bruises.
It’s a sad day when journalists are so intimidated or infatuated by a candidate that they rush to apologize for a misplaced preposition.

Oh yeah Jake??
I still remember the biased against Bill and Hillary Clinton!
The same biased now against Sarah Palin, even the title of the interview with Elizabeth Vargas for 20/20 was misleading and ABC finally apologized today.
You are all in the tank with the Messiah!

Have you ever misspoke on the GOP?????

Posted by: Joe V | October 30, 2008, 12:25 pm 12:25 pm

Wow, this gets its very own special post. Yesterday, Jake basically accuses McCain of being senile in his interview with Larry King and all it warrants is a title change and an “update” at the bottom of the post.
His colleague Elizabeth Vargas completely takes Palin out of context with an attention-grabbing headline to continue the media meme “Diva” storyline…and it takes ABC multiple times to “correct” the story…and they still don’t have it right.
But a simple preposition “mistake” gets its very own post. And, the media elite wonders why their unemployment numbers grow each day…..
Brilliant folks…just brilliant.

Now lets go back clear up that Palin NEVER called Obama a communist. Okay?

Posted by: topo2005 | October 30, 2008, 12:32 pm 12:32 pm

len,
Why is it that you and some other McCain supporters are showing more and more spite against the TRUTH?
Yet the truth remains that Obama has run a superior and better organized campaign than John McCain, and he has also demonstrated better judgment in his reaction to the economic crisis and his VP pick, and this is why Obama is winning.
Actions speak louder than Robo Calls.

I congratulate Jake for admitting to making a mistake and taking responsibility for it. That’s the whole problem today. Everyone thinks they’re perfect and incapable of doing anything wrong. What is the matter with people who have to jump at someone for doing right. And when did right become wrong.

Did anyone catch OBAMA’s Lie last night????
He said that there will be a tax break on those that make under $200,000.
But on the Campaign Trail he said below $250,000.
Why isn’t the press calling him out on this. Next its $150,000 or $75,000 or $40,000.
:o (

You can’t be serious, Jake the Journalist. After all the stuff you have been writing during this campaign, throwing gasoline on the fire, painting stories to suit some twisted agenda, you ask for forgiveness for using the word “for” rather than “with”? More and more I am coming to the belief that you people are utterly oblivious to the damage you are doing to our democracy. There ought to be an ethics refresher requirement for all teddy bears wanting to have the word “journalist” on their business card.

Posted by: jcarob | October 30, 2008, 12:38 pm 12:38 pm

To Joe V:
The official policy is this:
Anyone making under 250,000 will not see their taxes increased. Anyone making under 200,000 will see a tax CUT. Anyone making under 150,000 will see a significant tax cut.
So from here you can see that if you make between 200,000 and 250,000, you won’t get a cut, but you also won’t see your taxes increase a single dime.
Hope this makes sense. I am pro-Obama, but respect opposing views and I think misunderstanding and misconception is a big problem this election, on both sides, so I hope this helps clarify the numbers for many of you.

Posted by: Alex | October 30, 2008, 12:40 pm 12:40 pm

… and Alex would be willing to mortgage his house, if he owned one, to guarantee that Obama will somehow fulfill his pledge to the American voter that they will see a tax cut as advertised. Never mind that his word isn’t worth spit as evidenced by numerous reversals, beginning with the big one, that he would accept public financing… in writing, no less.

Posted by: jcarob | October 30, 2008, 12:47 pm 12:47 pm

Alex,
Did you figure out HOW Obama plans to pay for these so called “TAX CUTS”?

Posted by: Junior | October 30, 2008, 12:48 pm 12:48 pm

The reason for the confusion on the tax breaks and whether it is 250, 200 or 150 is because the candidate himself frequently is not precise in how he describes it on the stump. And, I have to believe it’s on purpose. The broad ranging statement he makes is that he will cut taxes on 95% of America. Then he says no one making less than $250 will see any tax increases….it is purposely misleading..
Oh, and btw, if you think any of these people are getting a tax cut, I have some swamp land in Fla to sell you. Very soon after he gets elected he will determine that he can’t do it because of economic times and all the NEW spending he wants to do..don’t buy it, folks…

Jake, forget about your apologies. Consider the truths first.

Concerned American,
One last thought before I sign off for the day.
Your admission that there is zero mentioning of nuclear energy in 0bama’s Democratic Party Platform is a truth-telling reality of this man. It tells us how deceptive 0bama really is.
He gives feeling-good speeches, only speeches, that he would consider nuclear energy but immediately pointing out its danger and waste scare. In reality, his Policy Platform shows that he has absolutely no intention, ZERO, NADA, to pursue the use of nuclear energy under his government.
This is a fatal flaw for the long-term security of the country. This is simply too short-sighted, as a result of a lack of understanding of the origin of War and War and War. It’s all for the oil, stupid.

Speaking of Obama’s tax plan:
In Obama’s quest to “roll back” the Bush Tax Cuts…how about the “Death Tax” relief that was part of that package? It is set to expire in 2010. It is now 0%–and will go back to 50% when it expires. A lot of family businesses and family farms will no longer stay in the family when mom and pop pass on.
Not all of the Bush Tax Cut plan was evil and scary.

KP,
You give 0bama too much credit. He is a smart man, Harvard smart. Of course, he knows what he is talking about. He knows exactly what he meant – perhaps, he does not want you to understand what he meant.
He is hiding his true colors of Marriage Tax Penalty under his plan.
He said he raises taxes on two singles with combined income of $400K, and he only increases taxes on couples making $250K and more. Two groups, two un-married people, and two married people, but 0bama will tax them differently. If you are married couples, he will increase taxes on the extra $150K difference.
0bama = Marriage Tax Penalty.

Remember that 3AM ad? Looks like “The One” Still Needs Hillary. So is he ready on Day One? Not.
“Bill Clinton: Obama’s Not Very Smart
Okay, so that’s not exactly what he said but it’s pretty much the gist of his “praise” of Obama’s handling of the economic crisis.
“You know what he did?” Clinton said, heralding Obama’s reaction to the financial crisis. “First he took a little heat for not saying much. I knew what he was doing. He talked to his advisers – he talked to my economic advisers, he called Hillary. He called me. He called Warren Buffet. He called all those people, you know why? Because he knew it was complicated and before he said anything he wanted to understand.”
So it was too complicated for Obama to understand right away, he had to talk to smart people like Bill and…Hillary to make sense of it. The backhanded compliment is fine and delicate art. Bill Clinton is a master of it.
Have I mentioned the strange new respect I’ve developed for the Clinton’s in the last year?”

Drew M
Posted by: Hero | Oct 30, 2008 1:09:51 PM

Hero,
Why strange respect? The Republicans hated him, them, but they respect, and in an odd way even admire, him. His fellow democrats like 0bama trashed him “the Clinton administration is the same as the Bush’s administration”, and race-baited him, and the avid supporter John Lewis even called him racist in exchange for supporting another black man.
Under President Clinton, the country experienced an unprecedented period of peace and prosperity.
More importantly, Hillary Clinton correctly diagnosed the economic problems ONE year ago, proposing to use that $300 billion to target banking, mortgage and financing crisis.
0bama, on the other hand, ridiculed Hillary Clinton’s proposal, and pushed forward Bush’s plan of money giveaways. Perhaps that $600 some of you got really did you good, but certainly nothing but tank the stockmarket and the economy.
0bama has serious judgment flaws.

Good you said sorry now tell your collegues to do the same thing. Bill and Hillary especially have done more than should be expected of them, especially when you consider McCain has had basically no help from huckabee, little help from Romney. Just like Obama supporters were saying that just because she got 18 million votes didnt mean Obama owed her vp. The same holds for Hillary she doesnt have to campaign till she’s blue in the face for Obama even though she has.

Posted by: rachel | October 30, 2008, 1:25 pm 1:25 pm

Jake where’s my post, like I said good you said sorry, please tell your fellow reporters to do the same. Hillary and Bill have done much more than obligated, especially with the lack of help McCain is getting from his former primary contenders. Just like Obama was not obligated to offer up the vp just cause Hillary got 18 mill votes, Hillary was not obligated to do all the campaigning she has for him, even though she chose to.

@john doe:
When reporting the facts becomes spiteful, the campaign has become a death march to the sea.
The angry ones are the Obama supporters who spew invective at anyone who questions them, their candidate, or their platform.
And after the election, those who have asked the right questions will be treated to a fantastic spectacle of the Democratic coalitions fighting each other at the door to the Oval Office. Obama set the example by running a campaign of deceit, misdirection and intimidation. If you think that is smart, well, then keep doing it. Let’s see how that works out for you.
It’s one thing to campaign. Governing is quite another. Means matter.

** I honestly thought that was the campaign the republicans were running! Goodness, if you seen all this negative literature I’ve received from the RNC in the past week, you would definitely change your tune! However, I am proud to say Obama/Biden stuck to contrasting the difference between the democrats and the republicans.
Obama didn’t mention Gordon Liddy.
Obama didn’t mention John McCain cheating on his first wife.
Obama didn’t mention Sarah Palin’s 17 year old daughter being pregnant and unwed.
Obama didn’t mention that Cindy McCain was a drug addict that stole prescription medicine from the sick.
* Obama did mention McCain voted w/ George Bush 90% of the time.
So let not the RNC and its supporters fool you! They have been running this type of campaign since George Bush stepped into office the first time and they will not stop. They will not change! Republicans know NOTHING about change~> Thats why we are where we are today…
I’m not really understanding why the conservative party is complaining… we gave them a shot. They failed. Let’s fire them and hire someone new before the couple of bad apples spoil the whole bunch!

Good for you JAKE!!
To the Obama haters, let me explain; racism can come in many different ways and it usually will surface with hatred and ignorance. If you disagree with his views and ideas I can completely and respectfully understand. It’s when we get into the name calling and trashing someone’s family and character is when in my opinion you cross the line. A key question is to ask yourself are you one of those people that when asked if you are racist you respond “No I Have a lot of Black Friends” knowing that the last person of color you have spoken to was at the line in the grocery store. If that’s you, then it would not matter if you agreed with every idea Obama had you would never vote for him. You would find every other reason to justify it, but his skin color would be the bottom line. So really why spread your hatred. Thankfully there are Americans that judge their friends, politicians and people they meet by the character of that person not by skin color.

Posted by: shelly | October 30, 2008, 3:58 pm 3:58 pm

I’ll betcha most of all the people complaining that Obama will raise their taxes, do not even make $250,000.00 which is what Obama stated. The rest are fear mongering Republicans like Joe the Plumber who not only owes income tax, he owes his wife support payments for his own children. The McCain campaign have sure picked a real stand up guy to fight for people in business. No one caught him in his lie but if you consider he has a lien against his house, his credit rating would not support a loan to even buy a business.
I thank Jake for correcting his error, and to the critics -look at your own campaign which applauds losers like Joe the Tax Evading Plumber.

“It’s when we get into the name calling and trashing someone’s family and character is when in my opinion you cross the line.”
So I guess the insults hurled at Palin’s daughter, the baby, moron, all of those things upset you, yes?
That would make you unique among the Obama supporters who rage when anything remotely critical is said about their candidate but fail to notice the gaslight treatment of Hillary’s supporters, and the trashing of Sarah Palin and Cindy McCain.
They talk a line about racism but no one in the McCain campaign has come close to that. Sexism? That has been a dominant theme in the Obama campaign.
If you are the exception, then say something quick because this is the year American journalism died.
Some say a loss for Obama would mean civil war. From reading the comments here, the Huffington Post and Jon Taplin’s blog, one thing is certain: it won’t be civil.

“Obama himself said that Palin’s family was off-limits.”
Obama said his wife was off-limits but turns a blind eye when his campaign goes after the families of his opponents. Palin is getting a more vicious version of what was thrown at Hillary Clinton. Obama could stop it anytime he wished.
He knows it. He dissembles. Typical trick of the left but more typical of Obama than any candidate in my memory.
