Being Squirrelly About ACORN

As reports pile up of voter registration fraud connected to ACORN — the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now, a group that advocates for low-income voters – the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has sought to downplay his past ties with the group.

But in their efforts to do, Obama campaign officials found themselves forced last week to correct an erroneous assertion made on the campaign’s “Fight the Smears” webpage that “Barack was never an ACORN trainer and never worked for ACORN in any other capacity.”

That wasn’t true.

In fact, ACORN spokesman Lewis Goldberg told the New York Times that Obama conducted two unpaid leadership training sessions for ACORN’s Chicago affiliate in the late 1990s.

The “Fight the Smears” website now asserts, "Fact: ACORN never hired Obama as a trainer, organizer, or any type of employee.”

Key word: hired.

Goldberg told the Times that Obama’s work for ACORN was unpaid.

You can see the old version HERE and the new version HERE.

Moreover, Obama also represented ACORN and other groups in the mid 1990s as an attorney suing the state of Illinois to uphold the federal Motor Voter law. The governor and other officials of the State of Illinois were refusing to comply with the law on the ground that it was unconstitutional.

**

Further confusing the length and depth of the Obama-ACORN relationship was the discovery by conservative bloggers of an error-riddled story in the journal Social Policy featuring not only a 2004 photograph of Obama and ACORN members but an essay called “Case Study: Chicago- The Barack Obama Campaign” written Toni Foulkes, a Chicago ACORN Leader.

"Obama started building the base years before,” Foulkes wrote in her 2004 essay. “For instance, ACORN noticed him when he was organizing on the far south side of the city with the Developing Communities Project. He was a very good organizer. When he returned from law school, we asked him to help us with a lawsuit to challenge the state of Illinois’ refusal to abide by the National Voting Rights Act, also known as motor voter. Allied only with the state of Mississippi, Illinois had been refusing to allow mass-based voter registration according to the new law. Obama took the case, known as ACORN vs. Edgar (the name of the Republican governor at the time) and we won. Obama then went on to run a voter registration project with Project VOTE in 1992 that made it possible for Carol Moseley Braun to win the Senate that year. Project VOTE delivered 50,000 newly registered voters in that campaign (ACORN delivered about 5000 of them).”

Foulkes messed up the chronology in that account, making it sound earlier than it had occurred. The Motor Voter Law was passed in 1993, the lawsuit was brought in 1995.

Additionally, press accounts from the time of the Illinois Project Vote voter registration drive put the number of new voters registered at 150,000, not 50,000.

Still, that doesn’t seem to square with the Obama campaign’s assertion that "Fact: ACORN was not part of Project Vote, the successful voter registration drive Barack ran in 1992."

Foulkes went on to note that “since then,” ACORN had “invited Obama to our leadership training sessions to run the session on power every year, and, as a result, many of our newly developing leaders got to know him before he ever ran for office. Thus it was natural for many of us to be active volunteers in his first campaign for State Senate and then his failed bid for U.S. Congress in 1996. By the time he ran for U.S. Senate, we were old friends."

Obama’s losing congressional campaign was in 2000, not 1996.

**

Further adding to the confusion were rather questionable charges coming from the campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., which has sought to portray Obama’s training sessions in just about the most negative light imaginable.

In a conference call, McCain campaign manager Rick Davis urged reporters to ask Obama of the ACORN training sessions, “What were you teaching them? Were you teaching them how to evade the law?”

"Were you teaching them how to evade the law?" ???

Excuse me?

Davis also incorrectly asserted that when Obama represented ACORN he was standing “against the State of Illinois and the federal government.”

Actually, the Justice Department was a co-plaintiff with ACORN in the suit.

**

Obama backers today pointed out that McCain in February 2006 participated in a Miami rally in support of McCain’s immigration reform bill that was sponsored by ACORN as well as other groups, according to the press release. For whatever it’s worth, a photo from that rally can be seen HERE.

Now I know ABC will show its lack of bias when, on Sunday, if ACORN gets mentioned, Cokie Roberts will say “well boith sides are guilty of ACORN ties.”
That will make up for a similar assertion comparing Obam’s negative campaign to McCain’s “He worked with terrorists. When Caught, he lied.” TV ad.

Republicans have been filling out bogus registration forms as an effort to discredit ACORN.
Anyone can do it. It’s horrible and fraudulent. But this is the routine.
Whenever you get confronted by a left-wing voter registration group… just fill out a registration with bogus information.
And then tell on them.

The problem with ACORN is the commission. Majority of ACORN employees are paid by commission and therefore you have employees forging names. It’s not voter fraud unless these “voters” voted.
My view is, Republicans don’t want to face the facts. Thy would rather talk about ACORN, Ayers etc rather then the economy.
Well….. look at the polls.
I rest my case.

Obama’s involvement with ACORN, and their corruption, runs deep. Not only was he the trainer of their thug tactics, but also he funnelled hundreds of thousands of taxpayer’s dollars their way. ACORN forced banks via thug tactics and calls of racism (sound familiar?) to give loans to people who had no business taking out loans. This led to our downfall in the mortgage crisis. If you want to look to see who is responsible for our econony, look no further than BH Obama.
he has the nerve to blame Bush for this, when he was actively involved in the problems to begin with .
What a corrupt liar and piece of trash, this Obama. How can you possibly support this criminal?

What is Obama trying to hide with his deliberate deceptions?
How many dozens of times has Obama now been forced to change his stories on Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers and ACORN?
Obama has never been forthright about his deep connections to these people and organizations, but instead has deliberately flat out lied and tried to deceive Americans with obfuscations.
Obama’s answers to important questions resemble the clever lies that teenagers make up to conceal their activities.
The question now is, can anyone trust one word that comes out of Obama’s mouth?
And Obama has answered that question. A resounding NO!

This attack is an attempt by the thugs in the Republican party to suppress voters who registered through ACORN (voters who are mostly lower-income minorities).
Voter registration fraud happens every year, it does not mean there is actual voter fraud or that this is anything resembling the massive disenfranchisement carried about the Republicans every election.

I agree with Rick “Jefferson” Davis of the McCain campaign. Reporters should ask Obama what he was teaching at an ACORN training session. And Obama should answer “I was trying to teach them how to get a contract paying them $10,000 a month from Freddie Mac for doing no work, like Rick Davis had.

It is true that registration fraud doesn’t necessarily translate to massive voter fraud, but I think we can all agree that the massive amounts of additional resources that is required to weed out all of these fradulent registrations is the last thing we need with a sagging economy and shrinking government budgets.

You would better serve your readers, as would Obama on his web page, to explain the truth. ACORN is required to submit all registrations they receive. They bundle them in two bundles that go to the state. One bundle has the registrations they believe are not valid. It is the state not ACORN that makes that determination.
People who work for ACORN are paid by registration so some bad apples make them up. MADE UP REGISTRATIONS DON’T VOTE. By definition they are not real people. The only one that is scammed is ACORN that has to pay for this.
Please investigate and tell your readers the truth. Right now FOX is claiming the false registrations will invalidate the election. Made up people can’t vote. You still have to show up with that name and a picture ID, usually a drivers license. Made up people do not have these things.

Your premise is not entirely correct. True Acorn has to turn in all the registrations but they are not separating them into legitimate and fraudulent. They say they don’t have the resources to do that..so the Sec. of State’s office has to do it and they are overloaded. This is a tactic of community organizers and taught. The rule is to overload the bureaucracy so that is cannot function and cannot verify the registrations as required by law. Dead people vote, felons vote, and my vote is invalid. I’m mad about this and you will find out ACORN and Obama have gone too far this time.

The Republicans are pushing the ACORN story hard to cover up their purging of voter rolls of legitimate voters in numerous states. The GOP used this ploy against JFK in 1960. It is not voter fraud until someone actually votes. So, when Mickey Mouse presents his ID and casts his ballot, that will be voter fraud.

McCain’s connection to ACORN is shocking. I bet it was arranged by Rick Davis, who once headed a front group for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, deceptively called the Homeownership Alliance. a: The GOP doesn’t have any real voter fraud… so ACORN really doesn’t matter.
b: But the more you push it… the more likely you are to get at the true source of their outrage over ACORN: Minorities.
c: Meanwhile, Obama is talking about big issues. And the GOP is forced to talk about obscure, partisan issues of little consequence.
THE BIG PICTURE: The GOP looks bad the more you get them amped up about ACORN. Meanwhile, Obama is talking to actual undecided voters about things that matter to them, like the economy.

National Journal conducted an “insiders poll” of Republicans and Democrats to get a sort of party elite opinion on where the race stands.
Not surprisingly, of the Democrats surveyed, 93% think Obama has a high chance of winning.
But on the Republican end there is clear pessimism: 80% think Obama has a high chance of winning, with 20% giving him a moderate chance. Zero gave him a low chance.

Maybe they’re embarrassed because they can’t figure out how to explain taxing small business, then making them low interest loans so they can stay in business and then giving them tax breaks for hiring workers which they will have to pay less if they want to be able to pay the loan. I never heard a screwier more convoluted dumb scam on the American worker and business owner.

The distinction between Obama and McCain would be that John McCain didn’t pay ACORN or any of its front companies 832K in 2008 to run Voter Registration Drives on his behalf. Obama did and he filed misleading reports with the Election Committee. This is another instance where Obama lies, the press condones it and then Obama attacks and cries foul. Just like Ayers, Wright, etc.

Posted by: ubu1991 | October 13, 2008, 3:12 pm 3:12 pm

So let me get this straight: More than 10 years ago Obama worked for an organization that now has some staff involved in voter registration fraud so Obama is now guilty of voter registration fraud? Maybe i’m lost, but i don’t get this argument. This guilt by association in this case is even worse than Ayers. I’m a bit lost on the connection. If Obama’s campaign was promoting voter registration fraud, then i can udnerstand. I don’t get this uproar. My bet is that most Americans don’t either, that’s why Obama is up by 10 points.

Obama has managed to stay above the fray. I knew this October was going to be bad… and I was worried that Obama would lose unless he stooped to McCain’s level. But, evidently, he hasn’t stooped much.
Voters really have gotten a lot smarter.
It will be great to have someone like that in the White House.

Okay..I give it to Obama supporters that if the issue at hand was merely Ayers, you might have a leg to stand on, but when you have a formula like the one below-it BEGS to question Obama’s judgment, character, integrity, truthfulness/honesty and intentions.
I sit back in true amazement at those making fun of Sarah Palin’s “alleged” SAT scores or even McCain’s failure to graduate respectfully from the Naval Academy…..BUT, how do we even know Obama graduated from college or law school? Where are the transcripts to prove this and where are his SAT scores? Better yet, give me one article or anything that actually proves he was President of the Harvard Law Review as I cannot imagine as President, he did not have to write anything.
Ayers + Rev. Wright + (Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac) + ACORN + Giving $800,000 to ACORN for what appears to commit fraud + Farrakhan + Rezko + Raines + Khali Al-Mansour + Communist Frank Marshall Davis + Rashi Khalidi + Refusal to show full length vault copy of Birth Certificate + Refusal to prove he is no longer an Indonesian Citizen + Refusal to show college transcripts to prove he actually graduate from college denoting his grades + Refusal to show thesis (which is something America will not appreciate from what I hear) =
= Corruption, deceitful, and liar with obvious criminality ties and/or behaviors.
Look, it does not take a rocket scientist to put all of that together and come up with and even more corrupt Washington and failed US economy should Obama become president.
We can dismiss one “coincidence” he was friends with a bad person, possibly even two, but seriously….there is NO DENYING the above information….and I am sure there is more corruption where all of that came from!!!
PS……It would be nice to see the media grill Obama and Biden like they have Palin…..For those of us whom are undecided, although Obama’s Illinois tactics and his “coincidental acquaintances” or his Kenyan trip where he was helping his cousing win an election are not helping him….Biden is a bit shady himself and what about his plagerism days or the fact that he does not know the friggin constitution??
As for the high jacking of another presidents failed plan, which by the way is Biden’s trademark, a PLAGERIST…….
“The Obama-Biden ticket’s call for higher taxes on American businesses and isolationist trade policies mirrors the proposals that President Hoover implemented at the onset of the Great Depression, spurring a complete economic collapse,” McCain spokesman Ben Porritt wrote in an e-mail. “It’s plagiarism of the very worst economic policies in American history.”

Firstly, ACORN as an organization is not guilty of voter registration fraud. Some members of the organization are, and the organization is closely working with the authorities to flesh this out. Secondly, blaming Obama for this mess is really insane. This shows just how desperate the Republicans are. And as for Lou Dobbs: That guy needs to see a psychiatrist.

Mack, that is not true. As a matter of fact, the people with whom Barack Obama worked to change Chicago into what it is today are Ayers, Wright, Rezko, and ACORN. Now he wants to change America.
Sen. Obama can defend those people, he can even apologize for having ever advanced their agenda, but to deny that he ever served their cause is dishonest, and to hide behind the economy by calling everything else a “smear” and “distractions” is cowardly.

McCain has different advocacy groups working on his behalf.
He would be dumb to pay ACORN to register voters… because with his highly racialized campaign… no minorities or poor people would vote for him.
McCain uses the right wing churches, think-tanks, and voter-disnefranchisement techniques to secure a majority vote.
It’s disingenuous to get all riled up about ACORN.
It’s well known that a high urban turnout benefits democrats… and a supressed uban turnout benefits republicans.

McCain spokesman Ben Porritt wrote in an e-mail. “It’s plagiarism of the very worst economic policies in American history.”
The height of audacity is to accuse your opponents of what you are doing.

Don’t you remember the Community Reivestent Act that Deepak Bhargava lobbied President Clinton to strengthen and when he did it opened the door for ACORN to agitate, demonstrate and sue banks that failed to make these sub-prime loans. That’s why FM and FM bought the bundled loans from banks, guaranteeing these bad loans which opened the door for more bad loans. Where have you been the last three months. Don’t you remember FMand FM lobbied the Congressional Banking committee, B. Frank and Dodd along with Schumer and Obama paying them for their support not to regulate or to enforce regulations after Sec.Snow and Sec. Greenspan warned they were getting in over their head and their was no collateral on the loans. I guess you don’t know President Clinton warned about this practice and was ignored, in 2005 Sen. McCain and others warned and presented a bill to fix it but Democrats didn’t let it get out of committee. You Obama supporters are blind or have short memories or both.

The point of the below quote is to remind PEOPLE that one should not vote for an individual based on race along, this card goes for those whom fell compelled to vote for Obama simply because he is black, which of course we are forgetting the he is 1/2 black and 1/2 white—i say this because months ago Obama decided to bring the race card into this election and it has spiraled from there.
Please look at the characters of each candidate and when you come to the conclusion that ones character is flawed because he was associated with the Keating scandal or when one is associated with the below equation, CHARACTER means a lot when you are trusting someone with not only our life, but those of your family—-
Ayers + Rev.
*May I remind my black brothers and sisters* of the words of the
honorable Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. — words I heard as a child of
that era that helped form the person I am today, with hopes and dreams
of equality for all:
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a
nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by
the content of their character.”
I say to you and to citizens of all races in our wonderful country,
please do not take the enormous step backwards to vote for someone
because of their race. We must open our minds and welcome full and
thorough vetting of our candidates, especially of their character.
Otherwise, you dishonor the life of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Republicans are so predictable. They used this strategy in 1960 against JFK. You would think they could come up with some new ideas.
By shrieking about voter fraud, the McCain camp hopes to make voting officials more willing to place restrictions in the path of voters on election day, potentially causing delays and confusion at the polls, and reducing overall turnout. And it seeks to discredit any Obama victory by raising the suggestion that it was aided by the votes of ineligible voters.

Subprime loans would not even exist had it not been for the 2004 SEC deregulation of five top megabanks.
They were allowed to lend $40 for every $1 in holdings instead of the $12 to $1 that had been the rule since the great depression.
That means they had more cash to loan. All “good” loans had been given so they had to go with riskier sub-prime loans.
And which five banks just collapsed? You guessed it. The very five that were deregulated.
And who was in power in 2004? You guessed it again – Republicans across the board!

Think you know who this man is? This possible President of the United States !! Read Below and ask yourselves, is this REALLY someone we can see as the President of our great nation!!!!
Below are a few lines from Obama’s books; In his words!
>From Dreams of My Father: ‘I ceased to advertise my mother’s race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.’
‘I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother’s race.’ From Dreams of My Father: ‘There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.’
‘It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.’
‘I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn’t speak to my own. It was into my father’s image, the black man, son of Africa , that I’d packed all the attributes I sought in myself , the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.’
And FINALLY the Most Damming one of ALL of them!!!
From Audacity of Hope: ‘I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.’
DOESN’T TAKE A HAMMER ON THE HEAD TO SHOW ME WHAT OBAMA’S ABOUT!

Apparently Baker and Obama developed a “personal friendship” during the campaign, and Michelle Obama became outraged. Shortly after, Baker was transferred to New York.
The story further reads that Baker is now under the “employ” of some Chicago political hack, and has conveniently been “working” this job from the island of Martinique, far away from the American political scene.

co-founder of Baker-Wambu a fund raising firm for black Democrats.

Even the McCain campaign has decided that tact is a loser after pushing it for a week and seeing Obama’s lead double. They have dropped Ayers from their speeches.
But hey the right wing media has ads to sell(tough economy hits us all) and they have a willing and gullible audience.

Obama has denied on his campaign website any ties to ACORN. As more and more videos and documents come out showing those are lies, Obama has been scubbing his website clean!!
He just changed it this weekend…again!
Poor Obama….in the age of the internet, he’s not getting away with this crap.

I was also wondering about that one.
Weren’t Ayers and Obama attending Columbia at the same time?
I can’t imagine a big lefty like Obama would have missed the opportunity to “pal around” with the infamous Ayers on campus.
Is this why he won’t release any of his college information?

Obama actually claims that 95% of *taxpayers* will get a tax cut.

Trust me the right wingers dont have to just cling to Ayers. Obama has left a nasty trail miles long with his radical ties. It will take years to discover where hes been and how much damage hes done. We just dont want it to be in the white house at the expense of all of us.

And why can Russia modernize its military and feel competitive enough with us to methaphorically shake their fist?
After all just a few years ago they were broke and pleading to the IMF.
Well its the price of oil combined with the degradation of our own forces and both of those are tied directly to the invasion of Iraq supported wholeheartedly by John McCain.

Careful about that, they haven’t really. They are now using the words “enemy” and “terrorist” to make the same implications. Just not as directly.
They’ve got their story out and are still running the Ayres commercial daily.
These two remind me of Sen McCarty. But now instead of his opponents being “communists”, he’s a “terrorist”
We look back on McCarthy as a pathetic segment in American politics. Funny how history repeats itself.

For McCain to win next month, he will have to do what no other presidential candidate has ever done — come back from a 10-point deficit with only three weeks to go.
“No candidate has ever lost with a lead like this since modern polling began in 1936,” ABC News’ senior Washington correspondent George Stephanopoulos told “GMA.”
Stephanopoulos said Obama’s candidacy is riding a surge of public opinion, fueled by the current economic crisis, which is devastating for the Republicans.
A record number 90 percent of Americans feel the country is on the wrong track and 73 percent disapprove of President Bush’s performance, according to the ABC/Post poll.

It’s funny that the right wing drones think all the attacks are going to have some dramatic effect on the outcome of this election.
The only people listening to the smears are the people that have already decided on McCain.
Obama ran 36% negative ads last week, McCain 100%. And McCain’s numbers went down!
McCain tells people, “We have nothing to offer, but we don’t suck as much as him”
Obama has a plan, offers hope, and has appeared more ready to lead than McCain.
The few Independents that remain are thinking about how they’re going to pay their bills. They don’t want to hear a bunch of distoted information. It’s great that factcheck busts McCain repeatedly for his lies. People are catching on to his strategy.
McCain’s eratic decsions regarding the econonmy and his poor judgment will be what they remember in November.

OK so Obama talked twice over a three year period somehwere between nine and fourteen years ago to ACORN leadership seminars (according to one ACORN source.) Obama did so for free. McCain’s campaign manager got paid $15,000 per month by Freddie Mac for almost two years and apparently talked at one lunch about the elections. And of course, Obama and McCain “lied about it.”

The rally will feature Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) as the headline speaker along with elected officials, immigrants and key local and national leaders. Sen. McCain is one of the chief sponsors of the Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act; bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform legislation introduced last Congress and scheduled for consideration by the Senate in the coming weeks. A similar rally with Sen. McCain is planned for New York City on February 27
-> The rally in Miami is being sponsored by the New American Opportunity campaign (NAOC) in partnership with …ACORN, and others….

Someone needs an update ……..
the republicans caused the deficit?
————————-
You say you need the update?
Yes, when Bill Clinton left office, our government had a SUPLUS and we were paying off the $5 TRILLION national debt.
After 8 years of Bush and 6 years of REPUBLICAN “leadership” we now have a $10 TRILLION national debt,
And, Bush proposed the LARGEST BUDGET DEFICIT IN AMERICAN HISTORY.
You say it was the Dems (that didn’t even get a majority until Nov 2006)?
Name a single year of the last eight we didn’t spend more than we took in. Come on now, just one? Anyone? Anyone?
So much for the Republican version of fiscal responsibility!

To all of you dumb enough to still believe the “Obama is not an American citizen” crap…please, the internet is your friend. Do your research and you’ll find that Obama is a citizen of the USA with an US birth certificate. He could not run for Prez otherwise. But since doing an internet search and digging might be a little too much work for you, here…I’ve done the work myself.

after the democrats get into office and start really uncovering (along with the fbi s help) all the illegal activities the republicans have been covering up with the power of the presidency , there will be some real trouble for the republicans.
once the american public finds out the truth about why there was a war aged over republican brewed lies? why is the countries economy and finance ruined after 8 years of republican rule when it was doing better than ever previous to that?
those questions will get answered ,many others too and the answers will certainly make the american voter unlikely to vote for a republican for a LOOONG time ,not even for dogcatcher .

For McCain to win next month, he will have to do what no other presidential candidate has ever done — come back from a 10-point deficit with only three weeks to go.
“No candidate has ever lost with a lead like this since modern polling began in 1936,” ABC News’ senior Washington correspondent George Stephanopoulos told “GMA.”
after this next debate, i think the republicans will give up and start the acceptance phase of losing ,except for the crazies like jo and geevil. they will be saying obama is losing as he is taking the oath of the presidency.
lol!
btw, theres a site you can put your money where you mouth is …up to $300. google it and you can get a quick rebate yourself ,that is IF your pick wins…GO ON AND PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS…
(i bet most of the money grubber republicans will/would secretly bet on obama anyway. they will talk in public like he will lose but inside they know hes almost certainly a lock and therefor wouldnt bet against it…they cant stand to part with a penny ,much less $300)

Do (some of) you people even know how voting and registration works? Someone could register a million fake names, but no one could vote under the names without getting caught. ACORN flagged and reported the suspicious registrations as they are required to do. McCain even lauded ACORN’s work back in 2006. Let’s get back to the facts, “my friends”.

Posted by: RealityCheck | October 13, 2008, 4:58 pm 4:58 pm

Do you realize that ACORN hires community residents to solicit new voters. Those residents are paid by the number of new voters they sign up. Of course some of them will fake the registrations because that’s how they make more money. Even if ACORN knows the voter registrations someone turns in are faux, ACORN still has to turn them into the Board of Elections. That’s the law. The BOE then weeds out the fake from the real.
Technically, this is voter registration fraud, not voter fraud since none of these faked forms result in voter registration cards being issued. Somebody just got paid for doing nothing but the intergity of the election is not in question.

“the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, was founded in 1970 as “a community organization of low- and moderate-income families that addresses housing, schools, neighborhood safety, health care, job conditions, and other social issues that affect its members.”
Voter registration has been a major activity for the organization and ACORN has been working actively to register voters on behalf of the Obama campaign.”
According to the Milwaukee Journal Online;
‘The ACORN effort is part of a massive voter registration drive aimed at the fall presidential election, which is expected to pit Democratic Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois against Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona.
Although voter registration and Get Out the Vote drives seem like noble activities, in fact, not all of ACORNs dealings have been legal, and once again ACORN is facing investigation for illegal voter registration:
Criminal investigations could be launched against at least six voter registration workers who tried to add dead, imprisoned or imaginary people to the voter rolls, according to the Milwaukee Election Commission and the organization that employed them.
This is not the first time that ACORN has been under criminal investigation. I have already looked at Obama’s connections to ACORN and put into context ACORN’s fraudulent activities during the primary election season here, and here…. going back to his earlier elections…..”
Indeed Obama has a long history of working with ACORN in his community organizing days in Chicago. A subsidiary of ACORN, Citizens Services Inc (CSI), is part of what John Fund of the Wall Street Journal calls “Obama’s Liberal Shock Troops”.
For example, a search for ACORN at the 1024 Elysian Fields Avenue address in New Orleans uncovers at least 70 different organizations operating out of that front.
One of these, Citizens Services Inc, has received almost $1 million dollars from Barack Obama’s campaign in the last five months. ”
“According to Ohio Citizen Action, payments of $590,526.10 were made to Citizens Services Inc (ACORN) for “campaign consulting”.
I reviewed all the FEC filings from February until June for Obama for America (Obama’s campaign title) and found payments to CSI/ACORN .. in the amount of $832,598.29.”

What was Obama’s campaign buying for this hefty package of money?

so what exactly is the issue with ACORN? It registers the poor and lower middle class to vote. Gee,how horrible. And sometimes, people fill out applications with phoney information. Gee,how unusual. You remember those republican volunteers in 2004 who went thru the forms and then threw in the garbage any that indicated Democratic registration? Any outrage at that.
Bottom line: when you register people, you turn in the forms. You can’t cull them yourself. Mickey Mouse will never vote. Voter fraud is voting with a false ID. That’s not the issue here, so stop calling it voter fraud.
Voter fraud is, say, less than 1/2 the number of machines that work in minority polling places. Voting fraud is challenging people’s registration becuase their name sounds like that of someone with a felony…just knock them all off if not sure (recall Florida). voting fraud is machines that register more votes than sign ins, or like in Florida again (and then Ohio) registering negative numbers for the Democrat.
Gee, wonder why we only worry about “voter fraud” when it involves the poor.

Last week it was Ayers and all the those domestic terrorist lovin’ Chicago corporate, media, educational and political leaders who worked with Obama on the Repbulican-funded Annenberg Challenge. One of his fellow board members was an Asst. Sec. of State under Nixon. Another was the publisher of that Commie Pinko rag, the Chicago Tribune. Yet another was the former president of Northwestern University (aka Patrice Lumumba University West). All of them…pallin’ around with domestic terrorists!
The week before, Fannie, Freddie, the Community Reinvestment Act, and minority mortgage recipients were the cause of the world’s economic meltdown.
I’m eager to see what this week’s distractions will be as McCain has again hit the “reset” button and is lurching into “respectful” campaign mode. The lunatic fringe mob rallies must have been scaring the bejesus out of undecided voters.
While you’re reading and seeing this nonsense in the three weeks ahead, remember that a McCain strategist told the NY Daily News on 10/05/08 that “if we keep talking about the economic crisis, we’re going to lose.”

hahahahah or what ever:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
So glad you asked. The bill he sponsored with Kennedy didn’t get out of the Senate. It proposed a pathway to citizenship for illegals in the country and there was a huge bi-partisan grass roots opposition to it. It caused his campaign to stall even though last May he continued to say Immigration was a priority and agreed with the majority of Americans (that’s the way a Democracy works) that he heard the people and would secure the border first. He has remained silent on the pathway to citizenship for illigals in the country. The bruhaha (excuse the pun) comes fom Acorn. The Obama is using Acorn to attack McCain because he is attacking Obama. You do know ACORN is acting as the strong arm thugs of the Obama campaign.

Posted by: Carolyn | October 13, 2008, 5:48 pm 5:48 pm

Jake- “squirrely”? – I concur. I indicated the same in my Ad Wars article on Huff Post. Team Obama has been very good at reacting strongly to McCain attacks. Yet their response on not only ACORN, but the Ayers issue is a bit wanting. In the latest Obama ad, they refute a very minor point about McCain’s Ayers assault – which does nothing to clear up misperceptions about this relationship. They need to do more – especially on ACORN. He’s the best candidate – but his camp needs to be as forthcoming as possible.

Posted by: Mike Hughes | October 13, 2008, 5:59 pm 5:59 pm

A serious question: why are media silent about McCain’s friendship with domestic terrorist Gordon Liddy?
Ayers has been all over the place for more than a week now, whereas McCain explicitly expressed his admiration for the criminal Liddy. What’s at work here, is the MSM trying to get Obama down, simply bacause his campaign and its broad support are so amazingly strong?
As recently as May, 2007, as a presidential candidate, McCain was a guest on Gordon Liddy’s syndicated radio show. Inexplicably, McCain heaped praise on his host’s values. During the segment, McCain said he was “proud” of Liddy, and praised Liddy’s “adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.” From the program:
LIDDY: Your experience in the Hanoi Hilton is remarkable. I mean, I put in five years in a prison [for masterminding the Watergate burglary, and associated crimes], but it was here in the United States, and they didn’t torture – the only torture that I had was being forced to listen to rap music from time to time.
McCAIN: Well, you know, I’m proud of you. I’m proud of your family. I’m proud to know your son, Tom, who’s a great and wonderful guy. And it’s always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon. And congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.
Which of Liddy’s “principles and philosophies” was McCain referring to? Liddy’s advocacy of break-ins? Firebombings? Assassinations? Kidnappings? Taking target practice with figures nicknamed Bill and Hillary?
During the same period that Bill Ayers was a member of the Weather Underground, Gordon Liddy was making plans to firebomb a Washington think tank, assassinate a prominent journalist, undertake the Watergate burglary, break into the office of Daniel Ellsberg’s psychiatrist, and kidnap anti-war protesters at the 1972 Republican convention.
And this is NOT material to focus, whereas Obama sitting on a charity board with Ayers IS? It’s unbelievable, and it indidates that the greatest lie of this race is that the MSM would be in Obama’s tank.
On the contrary, as even Mark Penn remarked today (reflecting on the Keating scandal): the MSM been been critical of McCain’s campaign, but it has given McCain as a man with VERY shady connections, a VERY shady campaign manager and a VERY shady past of political affiliations a free ride so far. And I’m sure they will continue to do so.

_____________
It’s not worth much!
McCain and the Democrats had been working on a bi-partisan plant for immigration at that time.
Why shouldn’t he have attended?
He wasn’t involved in the mis-appropriation of Acorn’s funds… or in the group’s illegal revision of the voter registration records…..
And,in fact, McCain benefitted not one monetary whit from the little acorn which. once it fell not far from the Oak-ama, got really big and fat from rolling in Barry’s dirt!

Registering voters is a good thing but no matter how noble the intent, there is a lot of voter fraud perpetrated by Acorn. It’s no longer a joke. The vote early vote often slogan of Chicago politics has no place in an election. When one of your ACORN workers signs up a college student who votes the same day at college and votes absentee in their home state they have nullified someone’s legal vote. America is mad about this violation of our constitutional right to have a fair election. In 2006 Barak Obama spoke at a forum of community organizers sponsored by his old friend Deepak Bharagava, Exec. Dir. Center for Community Change, and an ex-ACORN leader. At that forum Obama promised the atendees that he would call them from all across the country to help him set his agenda for the first 100 days. ACORN has a stake in this race and It’s monetary. They are corrupt and communist trained. I’m sure there are other organizations that could register voters without denying my rights.

In case you missed it over the weekend, a minister who gave the invocation at a McCain rally in Iowa couched his prayer in terms I’ve never heard before: God’s own reputation is at stake in this election, he said, because so many Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists around the world are praying for an Obama victory that if Obama wins, they’ll think “their god is bigger” than the Christian god.

Posted by: Blue | October 13, 2008, 6:24 pm 6:24 pm

I asked a question previously and would like to repeat it…
If Obama did not stand up against his own PASTOR…Can we expect him to stand up for America when we need him???
Posted by: Sandi | Oct 13, 2008 6:18:53 PM
========================================
Good point Sandi. He finally kicked his
pastor under the bus when it became politically expedient. So much for
loyalty, no matter how misplaced. I don’t see Obama as a Christian because Wright isn’t a Christian. To be a Christian you have to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. All I ever heard out of Rev. Wright or Fr. Pfleger was their calling on a hateful god to D=== America. That is not Christianity. Wright is a fake and I don’t see why the Catholic Church has kept Fr. Pfleger around. He must have something on somebody. Of course he has been warned but doesn’t seem to take. What a radical crew. So Obama can’t even be loyal to those he sees eye to eye with I wouldn’t count on his to stand up for a bunch of strangers.

OMG I love G. Gordon. He knows the real
meaning of loyalty. Obama could take
lessons. I doubt that anybody will ever
be loyal to Obama because he has proved
he will kick anybody under the bus if
it’s expedient..even his typical white
grandmother. I worry that something
bad could happen to his African grand-
mother who was in the delivery room
when he was born. I know he will stop
at nothing to be President and she
could be a problem or maybe already be.

But obviously those doing the honors in behalf of Acorn.. were not being quite so fastidious!
They signed up the same name many times, and even the same handwriting.
Some of the registrants were long dead; others lived elsewhere; some NEVER existed!
Acorn, obviously, required NO identification for these registrants…. and for all we know, they might have been registering terrorists….
But probably, they were more interested in registering Democrats.
Was THAT why Obama paid them almost a million bucks?
hmmmmmmm.

I am amazed at the lack of outrage on this website regarding the voter fraud action of ACORN! These CRIMINALS are stealing your votes, my vote! The Democrats have made a conscious decision to steal the election BEFORE the vote on November 4.

Posted by: Phyllis | October 13, 2008, 8:50 pm 8:50 pm

It seems that many minorities have been targeted by ACORN to fill out registrations as many as possible in order to help the person financially trying to get the registration. So everybody knew it was a scam. ACORN is a scam taking federal money and having absolutely no oversight. The problem is calling into question the honesty of this supposedly non-partisan group immediately makes its supporters cry “racist”. This behavior will backfire as well as the nonsense occurring at the McCain rallies. I would wonder about this though. Can anybody verify if supporters at either camp are not plants? I mean if anybody wanted to paint the other a racist put a bunch of racists in the group to stir up trouble. As far as Obama, parsing words to try to deflect the truth is probably the most dishonest thing any candidate can do from my perspective. Both do it, but Obama is really quick to try to silence his critics by pretty much refusing to answer the question or just giving one pat answer and insisting the other candidate is trying to scare of confuse the voters. The truth is we all know Obama “volunteered” to train ACORN workers and that he represented them when he worked for that law firm in Chicago. What I see happening is that Obama will once again say that who he knew or the organization he once knew is not the same today. END OF CONVERSATION. It is a pattern.

McCain can’t talk about the economy because has forgotten what it is to have only one house to go home to.He does not have to worry about where he is going to park his cars how he will pay his bills much less the the middle class person. And as far as Obamas association with Ayers the people that are on that same board are supporters of McCain and now there is proof that McCain was attended a meeting at ACORN and as far as Rezko, McCain can lay claim to the Keating Five which took millions if not a billion from the elderly so he has no room to talk.

Who cares? It’s not as though one of these nonexistent registrants like “Mickey Mouse” would actually show up to vote on election day.
Registering to vote is not the same thing as voting.
I’m not saying fake voter registrations are good, I’m just saying it didn’t hurt anyone, or alter an election or anything else. It was just some Acorn worker trying to meet their days’ quota of registrations.

Posted by: d | October 13, 2008, 10:01 pm 10:01 pm

d
also the point is there should be better things to make poor people do that work for ACORN than meet a quota in voter registrations when you do that you make mistakes and usually make up stuff to get more registrations

Posted by: staniam | October 13, 2008, 10:19 pm 10:19 pm

D:
Unbelievable. If it’s no big deal to register new potential voters then why would groups like Acorn spend so much time doing all this?
This type of voter fraud is as old as voting. Once the election is underway suddenly these “resigtered” voters begin showing up in mass. The hell w/ the law.
Bet on it, employees from Acorn will go to jail!

Show me those people in Las Vegas who plan to vote for Barack Obama while impersonating the members of the Dallas Cowboys, and perhaps I’ll take the GOP’s ACORN story seriously.
Until them, I’ll stand my contention that this is overblown. The Republicans tried this on the federal level before, and ended up firing those U.S. attorneys like David Iglesias who refused to go along with their scheme.
The most egregious instances of electoral fraud in history have always been committed by those officials who abuse their positions of authority to malevolently influence the counting of votes, and not by those citizens who merely seek to cast them.

Here’s a contemporaneous account (1993) from Chicago Magazine about Obama’s work to register those 150,000 voters. You will note ACORN isn’t mentioned. If they had been involved, I expect they would have been included.
“In its technical demands, a voter-registration drive is not unlike a mini-political campaign,” says John Schmidt, chairman of the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority and a fundraiser for Project Vote! “Barack ran this superbly. I have no doubt he could run an equally good political campaign if that’s what he decided to do next.”

The problem with be dishonest for what ever excuse is when the truth comes out your trust points drop…. Then when the truth come to light on several issues, then a prudent person would be wise to think twice about their choice… OF course some people take a little longer comin around to accepting the facts and admiit that they have been out foxed…. Some of us saw the pattern after the second amendment flip flop, and the government spying tactics flip flop. AND you can rest assured that OBAMAS ideas on creating Social Services to help those down and out pretty much got squelched with 700 or I mean 850 billion dollars price tag of the rich and the greedy S. O. B.’s who beneifited from the Freddie Mac and the Frannie mae fiasco…. Those who benifited from that big scam, might be able to redeem them selves just a little, if they return all those bonus and extra bucks they gleaned when they cooked their books…

Wow this is pretty silly.
ACORN offers people a chance to register to vote. After someone completes the form they review it and if it looks bad they mark as bad but are REQUIRED to still send it in to election officials. Then republicans accuse them of fraud because they submit bad forms?
How do republicans attempt to get more people to vote?
oh and btw: FoxNews just reported that the 800G was paid to an different organization with a broader mandate and that this organization distributed about a tenth of that to ACORN.

In twelve years how many sermons did Rev Wright give? How many hours did he spend on the pulpit over those years? How many minutes of negative tape have you heard from rev Wright? Since his sermons were regularly taped and sold, what happened to the other eleven years and eleven months of tape? Maybe he had 625 good sermons and one bad sermon. The republicans want you to color him by his one bad sermon. His live interviews after the news broke didn’t help but I think he had a bad day. His life isn’t about hating whitey. the Catholic who later preached at his church was white. He deals with whites on a daily basis- got a little too frustrated and lost it as black preachers sometimes do.
He needed to apologize for his comments but he made a fool of himself. Wright put his ego ahead of Obama’s goal to lead the nation. I’m not sure what to make of Rev Wright

Posted by: RogerB | October 14, 2008, 5:08 am 5:08 am

jackie,
The down and out you are talking about are the American middle class. they just lost one trillion of their retirement and many have lost their homes and jobs. Do you believe just poor people lost their homes and thier jobs. Look at Michigan, Penn., West Virginia, it’s not the down and out Obama’s is looking to help.
It’s probably people like you. How rich are you? how secure is your 9 to 5?

Posted by: berryboy | October 14, 2008, 5:12 am 5:12 am

As Acorn picked these voter drive workers, they most likely picked people who had nothing else to do- no day job. So ACORN gave them a bunch of voter registration forms and told them to come back with signatures in order to get paid. There’s probably a reason why these people don’t have a job and part of it could be that they are lazy ( and maybe even a little stupid). Given a choice between accosting people or filling out fake registrations in front of the TV (while watching football), they choose to sit in front of the TV and earn their money by filling out fake forms.
ACORN is then required by law to turn in every registration form they receive even if they know it is fake. The board of Elections only has the authority to weed out the good from the bad based on Social Security numbers and other factors. If they don’t add up, the Board of Elections just doesn’t register the voter, There’s no harm of voter fraud. It takes more than an phony application to register a voter.
If you pick the worse people (frankly) in society to work for you and allow them to work independently, they will screw up everytime. ACORN needs a central office and people need to come in to fill out the forms. That way they know they have a real body for every form that gets filled out.
Some of the ACORN forms were filled out by Mic E. Mouse and Donald D Duck.

Since it is obvious that ACORN has a pattern of voter registration fraud, why isn’t ANYONE checking to see if this voter fraud changed the results of the primary? ACORN brags that they have gotten over a million new voters in the last 18 months…that means some of those’new voters’ may have altered the results of the primary election..
Come one Jake Tapper, investigate it!!

Posted by: Karen | October 14, 2008, 6:31 am 6:31 am

ACORN treats their bottom-tier employees like garbage, demanding impossible quotas — find 10 unregistered voters and get their applications each day, or be fired. They also offer a bonus if you acquire 100 apps in 5 days. Far more get fired than wver see the bonus.
Their employees are so in fear of losing their jobs that they break the law to keep their numbers up. Then ACORN can claim credit for a large turnout they had nothing to do with, and thereby snag more funding. And ACORN has been telling the media that their workers aren’t held to quotas! Why lie?
Founder Wade Rathke hid his brother’s embezzlement of a million dollars from the ACORN board for 8 years!
ACORN smells wrong, but many gullible Dems still flock to their defense.
The Obama campaign shouldn’t stretch the truth, but they are right to put as much distance as they reasonably can between their candidate and ACORN.

Florida would not have been close in 2000 if the Democrats had not sent lawyers in to challenge and invalidate Military and absentee votes. These votes are overwhelmingly conservative and would have benefited Bush. Just who is the party that disenfranchises votes? The Dems. So don’t give me that lame old line about Republicans trying to surpress minority votes, they just want to make sure dead people, felons and duplicate voters are stopped from turning an election.
Just check out Washington state Governor’s race. The Republican won, then won the recount and then lost the second recount as more ‘votes’ were found in boxes. Not to mention that thousands of military votes were not counted because they were sent to another state and did not arrive soon enough to be counted. But the ‘found’ boxes continued to be located and then counted until the Dem had enough votes to steal the election. The military votes arrived before the boxes were ‘found’ but still were not allowed to be included in the vote totals.
Seems to me that Dems only want their votes counted not anyone elses. Voter suppression is the Dems MO.

No, you’re all wrong. Obama was only eight years old and could not have been involved. Those acorns were gathered by crows who stole them from the squirrels.
Rev. Wright only chaperoned Obama and Michelle’s first few dates, and tripped and fell under that bus, so there’s no there there.
Bill Ayres coached one of the

Written about the 60′s radicals and Martin Luther King-
“to legitimize the radical social and political agenda to delegitimize traditional American social and cultural institutions — those that support a free market economy, an anti-communist foreign policy, and a constitutional system that restrains the power of the state rather than one that centralizes and expands power for the reconstruction of society and the redistribution of wealth
not much has changed for this group- their approach changed over the years by infiltrating our universities and indoctrinating their children and attempting to do the same to ours in the schools. Demand that the registration and entire voting process itself be fixed. There are too many ways for supporters of either party to cheat and they have.

(1) Obama lied about his collaboration with Ayers. Obama said Ayers was “just a guy in my neighborhood” when the truth was Ayers held one of the first campaign fund raisers for Obama in his home. Obama sat on two boards with Ayers, the Woods project and the Annenberg Challenge where Obama funneled thousands of dollars to Ayers anti-American school projects.
(2)Obama was a member of Rev. Wright’s church for twenty years. Rev. Wright’s church taught the racist and communist creed of black liberation theology. Rev. Wright: “God Da## America” “the chickens have come home to roost” the Sunday after 9/11, The US government is responsible for HIV among blacks are just a few of the hateful messages Rev. Wright preached from his pulpit. Obama claim that he was ignorant of Rev. Wright’s racist and anti-American beliefs are just not credible.
(3)One of Obama’s biggest campaign contributers was the convicted felon Rezco. Rezco helped Obama buy his million dollar home. Despite Rezco’s help in buying Obama’s home, Obama claims there was no quid pro quo with Rezco. Yet it is on record that Obama was instrumental in obtaining State funding for Rezco’s slum lord projects in Chicago. Rezco in now “singing” according to many reports in the Chicago Sun Times and the speculation is that Rezco may be spilling the beans on Obama.
(4)Obama’s web site claimed that Obama had no relationship with ACORN and than had to scrub the web site when irrefutable evidence came out showing Obama was an attorney for ACORN and participated in training ACORN leaders.
Obama’s track record of being “Squirrelly” I would say lying about his true relationship with crooks, communists and terrorists shows that Obama lacks good judgment, is a liar, and points to Obama’s true beliefs and leanings which are decidedly far left and out of the mainstream. Obama is unfit to be President.

Posted by: Bob | October 14, 2008, 8:19 pm 8:19 pm

The left cries ‘smear’ and ‘racism’ whenever anyone dares tell the truth about Obama and his collaboration with Ayers, Wright and Rezco. On the contrary – if Obama was a white Republican, with this history his candidacy would have been toast before it got started.
Just consider if the boot had been on the other foot and McCain’s political career had been launched by an abortion clinic bomber; his mentor for 20 years had been a White Supremist Pastor, and he had paid nearly a million dollars to far-Right militias who strong-armed voters into fraudulent registrations would anyone even think twice about voting for him? Of course not.
The question is whether through expediency or ideological sympathy or a combination of the two, Obama has allowed himself to collaborate with far left and anti American thinking that threatens the basic values and existance of America and Western society.

I have been reading your blog daily for a while now. With articles such as this one, you do Democrats and Barack Obama a disservice. The truth is one thing, but understanding all the background stuff at play here is another.

This is so disturbing – here is a man who was elected to be president of Harvard Law Review, taught constitutional law and now McCain has the gall to question w/not Obama was teaching the law? And here is a VP candidate who has a husband who loves America so much he was willing to spend a good deal of his adult life palling around with an organization that wanted Alaska for a country of their very own? Obama is right – McCain and Palin will say anything and do anything to distract voters from the real issues. I think the voters will not be fooled again.

Obama supporters sure do throw names around like lier when anyone questions their candidate. Aren’t we allow to find out if he has any fatal flaws that would exempt him from being a suitable President in charge of the worlds finest military and largest stockpile of nuclear weapons. I hear Joe Biden says he will be tested–if elected–within 6 months of taking office. John McCain has been tested and passed. We don’t know what Barak Obama will do so I have a suggestion. Why don’t we test him now. He has absolutely refused to turn over his birth certificate to prove he is eligible to run. John McCain turned over all his private papers and medical records. Obama won’t let anybody know what his grades in Harvard were..must not be proud of himself. We know he graduated with no honors. He didn’t “teach” constitutional law. He was a lecturer. Big difference. We don’t know enough about him to trust him to be President. The big questions is how many Americans or our allies (perhaps Isralies) will die while this enigma is trying to “Prove” himself. Could be some of us or our families.
