Biden Cancels More Events After Mother-in-Law’s Death
ABC News’ Matthew Jaffe reports: Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden today canceled two days of events after the death of his mother-in-law.
"The Obama-Biden campaign today canceled Sen. Biden’s schedule Monday and Tuesday because of the passing of Jill Biden’s mother, Bonny Jean Jacobs, this afternoon after a long illness," Biden spokesman David Wade said in a statement.
The Biden family is at home in Wilmington, Del., after canceling the Delaware senator’s weekend schedule that included campaign events in Washington, DC, and Virginia. On Monday and Tuesday, Biden had also been set to hold rallies in New Hampshire and Florida.
"We appreciate everyone’s respect for the family’s privacy during this difficult time," Wade added.
Sen. Barack Obama called the Bidens this afternoon from Asheville, N.C., to express his condolences.

Good for Sen. Biden. He’s a true man of honor, unlike the hypocrite McCain, who left his crippled wife for a multi-millionaire beer heiress.

Umm bill, I think biden wanted to be their for his wife. Biden doesnt need to suspend his campaign. Hill, helped him out this saturday at one event he was suppose to attend, I am sure if asked she will help out again until he is ready to campaign again. I would be concerned if his mother inlaw passed and the same day he was out campaining

So sorry for Biden and his family. He his a real gentleman. I admire how he has maintained his home in Delaware even while serving his country in the senate.
@Bill, perhaps you are not aware that Biden’s son was deployed the same day, and is on his way to Iraq?

Bill, how DARE you. You’re seriously the worst kind of person. There is nothing political in the decision to give Joe time to grieve. Family tragedy trumps politics and anyone with a heart knows that.
I offer my condolences to Joe & Jill Biden. My thoughts and prayers are with the Biden and Jacobs families during this difficult time. You are in our hearts.

People like you are a disgrace to the human race and I cannot you believe that you wrote that HORRIBLE statement on a public forum. I hope Joe Biden and his family can heal from this horrible event and I am really glad that he has gone home to be with his family..What it shows is that Joe unlike you is a REAL man.

Here in Virginia, Senator Evan Bayh graciously substituted for Joe Biden today (Sunday) at two major events. (Biden’s family had been alerted by the hospice to stay close to home.) Thank you so much, Senator Bayh. You are a class act.
I honestly have not heard how the events went — there was a lot of confusion online as to whether the events themselves were “canceled” when they weren’t, so that could have reduced turnout. But the main thing is that Bayh was very good to do this.
As for the few bitter comments, I’m sure they are from younger people who are lucky enough to have gone through life so far without losing a dearly loved family member. Unfortunately, one day you will know better. Once that has happened to you, you know what the priorities are.
Joe Biden is, of course, doing the right thing and our hearts are with him, Jill, and their families.

Bill apologised. I bet those who are throwing stones at him have themselves made an off the cuff insensitive remark at one time or another in their lives. Think about it. At work, to a family member? That doesn’t mean you need to go to a therapist nor are you a nasty person as a whole: nor does nor is Bill. It’s just something we human beings do occasionally.
And if you’re going to bring God into it then remember God asks us to practice forgiveness. Bill you are forgiven.

I think it’s a shame that people like Fairfax Voter make such smug, ignorant comments. I had my fair share of childhood tragedy, as did the Biden boys and many other children/young people throughout the world. Believing that young people are exempt from pain is just an excuse to feel superior and act insensitive, even cruel.

As a 66 year old now living with my 95 year old mom in the house where I was brought up, and taking the most pleasure in how well she is doing — we share the cooking, but she no longer mows the lawn (joke), I offer my deepest sympathies to the Biden family. Certainly Sen. Biden has acted nobly as well as necessarily here. I hope this election is a landslide for the Obama-Biden ticket, and I expect it will be. Here in uppermost-northeastern New York State, Clinton-Essex-Franklin Counties, the GOP has a strong presence, but we voted against Bush in2000 and 2004, and I expect we will vote against McCain-Palin this year — lots of smart and decent people around here. Bill is a good reason why I’m no longer a republican. It’s embarrassing to be associated with people like that. Biden is not my favorite politician by any stretch of the imagination and indeed, I have very deep and bitter disagreements with him on many issues(not the least of which is the drug war), but this is a serious time for his family and a man’s place is with his family during a time like this. A REAL PATRIOT OF THIS COUNTRY IS GOING TO SUPPORT A SENATOR OF THIS COUNTRY DURING A PERIOD LIKE THAT, IRRESPECTIVE OF THEIR POLITICAL DIFFERENCES. The phoney patriots on the right are the ones who will view this as the time to take cheap shots, and that’s why people are dropping their candidates and party like they’re Lehman Brother’s stock.
We can only hope and pray that Biden’s family will find comfort in each other and whatever faith they may hold to during this time. We can also hope and pray that Bill and people like him have not yet reproduced and will not be ever be allowed to for the sake of the quality of the human gene pool.

There’s a bit of hypocrisy going on here. Bill gets knocked for bringing politics into the subject of Biden’s family loss. Then along comes a Obama/Biden supporter offering sympathies to the Biden family in one sentence and, in the next, invoking politics and saying vote for Obama/Biden: don’t vote for McCain/Palin.

I am a McCain-Palin supporter and I definitely think Joe Biden did the right thing by returning to his wife and family during this sad time. It makes him look like the compassionate man that he is. When my mother-in-law passed away, I would not have thought for a minute that I did not need to be there for my husband. Right on, Joe!
Posted by: Mary | October 5, 2008, 6:42 pm 6:42 pm
Biden may be as honorable as the next man in dropping everything and concentrating on his family at this time.
But, the fact that a short while ago he was seriously criticising Obama and his candidacy and now, in the next breath, he is licking his boots is downright two-faced and dishonorable. And the sad loss of his mother-in-law doesn’t excuse that behaviour.
So yes, he should step down from the campaign if he has any sense of honor.
Posted by: Janet | October 5, 2008, 6:44 pm 6:44 pm
I don’t know why these GOP sickos can’t
even say one kind word of comfort to another human being who is undergoing a personal tragedy. I think that is what characterizes both Obama and Biden and distinguishes them from Mc Cain and Palin as the latter never have a good thing to say about the Dem candidates, but the Dems on the other hand congratulated and cheered the other guys by agreeing on some points and agreeing to disagree on others. The Dems are cultured and polite and don’t keep trading insults like Mc Cain and his VP with whom he seems to have a crush!I am referring to Mc Cain looking at Sara adoringly and protectively as a father would on his daughter! THE USA had its brightest years as a shining beacon to the whole word when Bill Clinton ruled. THE GOP stole the presidency and shamelessly held onto it for 8 years . .. .. its time for them to buzz off!

Biden said himself that Obama should have chosen Hilary.
So yes, if he dropped out Hilary could replace him and the Democrats would have the Dream Ticket that a lot of its supporters called for in the first place and win the election hands down.
And Biden could follow his natural inclination of taking care of his family.

Yes, Edward Kennedy has a brain tumour: that’s right. And who is to say that in his hospital bed his whole life didn’t flash before him as is often the way in such sad circumstances. And wasn’t his whole life gone over in the national press and on television when it was announced that he had the tumour.
What happened at Chappa bridge is a historical fact that is part of his life: not a smear.
In the present state of the economy how much more sensible it would have been for there to be a Clinton on the Democratic ticket given their past success in that respect, instead of Biden.

McCain has a 19 year old son who was in iraq.
That didn’t stop the media from pounding McCain when he went on trips to Iraq.
That didn’t stop the Obama campaign from calling him an elitist.
McCain can’t use his arms and shoulder socket from being tortured and yet Obama takes advantage of that saying he can’t use e-mail and his posture at the debate.

It is online posting. You people don’t know who Bill is even if that is his name.
The person apologizing might not even be Bill for all you know.
To take online posting in a public forum like this seriously is beyond belief.
No republican would post what Bill posted because it only would hurt their cause.
Only someone who didn’t like republicans would post what Bill posted to try and make Republicans look bad.
Look for the motive of what Bill posted and he is obviously someone who is trying to make republicans look bad and isn’t a republican.

Joe Biden is my man. He and Barack. I love the Clintons as I do the Obamas and Bidens. How can you really not just let this topic go without bad comment against them and their families. Tou are so inhuman and sick I am glad I don’t know you. Someone has just lost family and you choose to come here and hate? I cannot understand you. You are sickening.
Joe rocks. Obama rocks. Their wives rock. Take your beliefs elsewhere in this time, and hope we don’t treat you this badly when you lose someone you love. You are the lowest of low.

Truly sorry for your loss. May God be with you at this time.
I still can’t vote for you though.

Bill is just doing a trick.
Dems are all over blogs posting mean messages and then writing McCain/Palin underneath it.
I can’t believe you people fell for what Bill did.

What an extraordinary display of narrow mindedness I see demonstrated here.
If you don’t agree with someone else’s point of view you take the easy way out and dismiss them as trolls or crawling out from under a rock.Imagine if they did that in Congress! Madam.Speaker, you are a troll! Madam Speaker, go back to the rock you’ve crawled out from!
I am actually on Biden’s side in that I agree with him that Obama doesn’t have the experience to be President.
The state of the economy alone demands that a Clinton should be in the White House.

Michelle Did It
I believe BO will not release his undergraduate transcripts for good reason. So how did he get through Harvard Lawschool? Michelle. She graduated from Lawschool in 1988 and BO graduated in 1991. He was a summer associate at the lawfirm where she was employed. She was assigned as his mentor. They married in 1992.

Michelle has the smarts and BO is dumb as a Bush box of rocks.

Biden is not a man of honor. His guilty conscience from lying about McCain’s record is weighing him down.

this was good for Joe but can you imagine what would happen if this palin chick’s child became very ill requiring months in the hospital. Where would she be in the white house or at the hospital? I know as a working mother of 4 if something happened to my child screw the job I am going the hospital. But since she tries to play super chick she may send tina faye in her place.

Quit hatin this negro, I’m just doin what Obama said.

First of all, who is Bill? Secondly, what did Bill say? I have a feeling it is that old Demon Bill O’Rilley. If it is shame on you all to give that hateful man a second of your time.
He is a miserable old Demon and he wants other people to feel the same way. So Bill go and hide under a Rock
My Sympathy goes out to the Biden family. The Biden’s family is a true and wonderful family! May the Lord comfort you at this time of sorrow!

can’t wait until the debate tonight, in the last one,
McCain didn’t look Obama in the eye, well I wouldn’t either.
Bucky was an ugly, angry gay halloween monster.
Who did his makeup? They should be fired! He was dark and sinister, those damn eyebrows and scowls.
He just lost all the old folks vote.
scary as hell!
yeah blobama looked like a black version of Gollum the evil one!
Then again Obama looked like a gay monster in drag with all of that makeup.
Scary … and it’s not even Halloween!
