Biden Did Not Have Follow-Up MRI After Brain Surgery, Had Other “Tests”

ABC News’ Kate Snow, Matthew Jaffe, Susan Wagner and Joanna Schaffhausen Report: When Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden released his medical records Monday, the documents did not state whether he had had follow-up brain scans after his two 1988 brain aneurysms.

However, ABC News can now confirm that Biden has never had a follow-up MRI because the metal clips used on the aneurysms in 1988 are "not compatible" with that test, according to an Obama-Biden aide.

The aide said the Delaware senator did have tests of some kind following the 1988 surgery that showed he was "aneurysm free", but could not provide details of what these tests were or when and where they were performed.

In addition to a form of MRI, another test often used to detect brain aneurysms is a CT scan, sometimes called a CAT scan. A CT scan is a special type of X-ray that allows doctors to see weaknesses in the walls of brain arteries. It is possible that Biden might have had such a procedure, but again the campaign has not confirmed any specifics about any tests done.

Some doctors recommend brain scans to detect new problems after a patient goes through surgery to remove a brain aneurysm.  People who have suffered a brain aneurysm do have an increased, albeit small, risk of developing another aneurysm later in life.

Biden’s medical records released Monday showed that he appears to be in good health, as Dr. Matthew Parker, an internist in Washington, D.C., confirmed in a conference call with reporters. Parker has never treated or met Biden, but he reviewed a portion of the lawmaker’s medical records and consulted with Biden’s personal physician, Dr. John F. Eisold, the attending physician at the US Capitol, who does not speak to the media.

The Delaware lawmaker’s biggest health issue concerns two brain aneurysms he had surgery for in 1988. Dr. Eisold had written that Biden has "recovered fully without continued effects" from the aneurysm, but the records released Monday did not reveal whether or not Biden has had periodic brain imaging done since his surgeries.

The campaign assured reporters that they would release additional records about follow-up brain scans, but they have yet to do so.

So, Sarah Palin’s advisors decide that it is time for her to meet a bunch of serious world leaders. They head to Europe, where, first up, she has an appointment with the Pope. The Pope and some of his Cardinals invite her for a boat ride on the Tiber. As they are sitting in the gondola talking, a wind starts up and blows the Pope’s hat into the water. Palin looks around and realizes that no one is going to do anything about it, so she calmly rises, takes off her her high heels, and steps off the side of the boat. Instead of diving into the water, however, she walks across it, to the hat, picks it up and walks back across the water to the boat. She climbs in, hands the Pope his hat and continues discussing whatever it was they had been talking about. The Cardinals are open mouthed in astonishment at what they have just seen. The news media, in nearby boats are busy discussing among themselves how to report it. Headlines the next day at the New York Times, The Washington Post and the networks all blare: New Revelation: Sarah Palin Can’t Swim.

Lil – and what Johnny Sidney McCain belong too.Johnny Sidney McCain sat on the board of a very right-wing
organization, it was the U.S. Council for World Freedom, it was chaired by a guy named John Singlaub, who wound up involved in the Iran contra
scandal. It was an ultra conservative, right-wing group. The Anti-Defamation League, in 1981 when McCain was on the board, said this about this
organization. It was affiliated with the World Anti-Communist League the parent organization which ADL said has increasingly become a gathering
place, a forum, a point of contact for extremists, racists and anti-Semites.

Twice last weekend, Biden grimly warned at closed-door meetings that a great crisis is coming early in the term of President Obama:
“Mark my words. It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. … Remember I said it standing here if you don’t remember anything else I said … we’re gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy.”
A “generated crisis”? By whom? Moscow? Beijing? Tehran?
This is an astonishing statement from the CHAIRMAN of the Foreign Relations Committee who has access to the same intelligence as President Bush. Was Joe warning of a crisis like the Berlin Wall of July 1961, where JFK called for a tripling of the draft and ordered a call-up of reserves, or the missile crisis where U.S. pilots like John McCain were minutes away from bombing nuclear missile sites in Cuba and killing the Russians manning them?
Is Russia about to move on the Crimea? Is Israel about to launch air strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites? What is Joe talking about?
If one assumes Joe is a serious man, we have a right to know.
Instead, what we got was Obama’s airy dismissal of Joe’s words as a “rhetorical flourish” and a media – rather than demanding that Joe hold a press conference – acting as Obama surrogates parroting the talking points that Joe was just saying that new presidents always face tests.
Had John McCain made that hair-raising statement, he would have been accused of fear mongering about a new 9/11. The media would have run with the story rather than have smothered it.
Has anyone ever asked Joe about his own and his party’s role in cutting off aid to South Vietnam, leading to the greatest strategic defeat in U.S. history and the Cambodian HOLOCAUST? Has anyone ever asked Joe about the role he and his party played in working to block Reagan’s deployment of Pershing missiles in Europe, and SDI, which Gorbachev concedes BROKE the Soviets and WON the Cold War?
Is Joe’s record of having been wrong on Vietnam, wrong in the Cold War, and wrong on the Surge, less important than whether Sarah Palin tried to get fired a rogue-cop brother-in-law who Tasered her 10-year-old nephew to “teach him a lesson”?

Yes, I am afraid of McCain/Palin, he loves war and she too.
We leave in the same planet.
McCain is a little soldier who killed innocent people in the Vietname war. The american people forgot the Vietname war, but the world not. McCain is not a heroe he is only a soldier who lost de war, a war far, far way he never defend his country, he attack others country.
Palin is a religious fundamentalist who believes in criacionism and can be prepare to kill for hers believe, well she kills animals from a plain for pleasure. What terrible person she must be.

Posted by: anthony | October 24, 2008, 11:06 am 11:06 am

What’s the story here? It seems that Biden had whatever tests were recommended by his doctors, and an MRI wasn’t it, because the treatment he had received wasn’t compatible with an MRI. So what…?
Since this happened 20 years ago, don’t you think if there had been an outstanding problem that we’d know about it by now?

Posted by: Brain Hertz | October 24, 2008, 11:06 am 11:06 am

Constance, I guess you don’t know, Obama was for letting babies born alive from botched abortions being left to DIE!!Yes, dear, he was the ONLY senator who opposed a bill protecting babies born alive from botched abortions from being left to die. It doesn’t get any colder than that.

Anna,
didn’t that one get debunked like, a long time ago?
As in, the provision in the bill to which you refer was a non-issue, since doctors are sort of required to administer care to any living patients anyway? And that the provision was added to an anti-abortion bill in an attempt to strongarm senators into voting for it?

If Economics is a big issue then why is it mostly the blue states that are recession? The rocky mountains which is run by conservatives appear to be doing ok with the recession.

Posted by: Arnold | October 24, 2008, 11:17 am 11:17 am

Anna, check your facts. Just because Rush Limbaugh says it doesn’t make it true.
That bill would not have protected those babies any better than existing law already does. Babies born alive are ALWAYS protected; nobody is leaving them to die, least of all Sen. Obama–who would ensure that they are insured, no less.
So many of these radical arguments–on both sides–ring false if you do even minimal fact-checking.

Is Joe Biden is coky, and sick, just like Dic Cheny? Barack Obama’s “Bottom-up econonmy” is socialist , a big well-fare system, with big government-control, bigger spending, more regulations, and less and less freedom for people. Thoss who work will be punished, or taxed, to finance big spending and well-fare. Barack Obama reminds us of Jimmy Carter, he will cause deeper recession, or even another Great Depression.

Forget about Joe Biden’s health. Let’s see detailed medical records for Barack Obama, not just a one-page summary stating that everything’s just fine. Those early years of drug abuse and smoking could’ve adversely impacted his health. We have a right to know, right?

Posted by: Cliff | October 24, 2008, 11:30 am 11:30 am

Twenty years ago, a non issue. He is obviously in good health. Where are the complete McCain and Palin records? What are they hiding? For those of you with socialistic paranoia for Obama you obviously do not understand the term. It is the right wing of Bush that just nationalized the banks. You don’t like socialism send back you social security check, send back your unemployment check, send back your Medicare and Medicaid check, send back your disability check, take your kids out of public schools, cut food stamps, stop medical care for kids, etc… You are all tough talk until it is your turn, you loose your job than you see the light and cry like babies.

Trump- He didn’t stub his finger. He had a BRAIN ANEURYSM. Democrat, Republican, Independent, etc. that is something that has to be followed up on.
JimM- This is a non-news story the way Obama visiting his grandmother is a non-news story. It’s his GRANDMOTHER!!! He didn’t run off to the Sudan to help the poor and sickly. If he didn’t go see his grandmother he would be simply an idiot.
Yet we tend to be incredibly biased in these times. Palin and McCain are fair game. Obama and Biden are untouchable. I get that.
Let me just ask you this… After Obama fixes the world’s poverty, creates grand wealth, develops energy efficiency, ends all wars, cures AIDS, Cancer and Cold Sores all within his first week in office, what will he do then?
Blindly follow the rock star without truly looking at the issues. Palin scares you because of her anti-choice stance? Do you realize that in order to have Roe v. Wade overturned it would have to go through the Supreme Court Justices and the following act would be to push the law down to the individual states? That’s it. No one is taking away a woman’s choice and it’s not like we have everything all settled down that we can focus our time on abortion and gay marriage.
Yes, this is a perfect time to vote in an untested saviour who will fix all the world’s problems. I’ll be the first in line for his new rock album too…

As for “leaving babies to DIE!!!”. That is a statement of misunderstanding. Babies left alive after “botched” abortions are not babies you and I could adopt and raise – they are so underdeveloped they have no chance of survival outside the womb. When the fetus is strong enough to survive, abortions are not done by law. These ‘babies’ die, and they die very quickly, with or without the medical intervention. The “care” in question is PALLIATIVE care.
The nurse who started the legal process held a fetus/baby in her arms, until it died, that’s how she got inspired. That’s an example of palliative care. I really understand where she’s coming from, and I respect her for doing so, though it probably ment more to her than it did to the baby. The question is not whether these fetuses’ lives could be saved, because they cannot. I think that idea is purposefully injected into the discussion to try and muddle up the issue, and make it a big deal when it’s not.
BTW, the whole issue is kind of moot. Since the ban on partial birth abortion, most hospitals stop the fetus’ heart before the procedure. This is obviously kinder on the fetus, IF they feel anything at all, which may or may not be, depending on when the abortion is done. It does pose some risk to the mother though, like infection, which could be serious. But the chance of ending up with a live baby are zero.

Both candidates advocate Big Government solutions and I think it just shows a lack of 1) respect for our Constitution and 2) creative thought.
McCain says he’s going to “name names”? That’s great but how’s he going to do that when the wolves in Congress are guarding the henhouse?

I had a fiance who died from a cerebral brain hemmorage at the age of 36. As I read this story I can’t help but be offended with Bidens judgement of not having follow up MRIs. I mean this in all sincerety. I wish my fiance had survived his aneurysm. I know he and I would have appreciated the second chance at life and used our better judgement and always had follow up MRIS. We would have insisted even if the doctors didn’t think it necessary. Especially if he had Bidens health insurance plan. I learned the hard way an MRI is sometimes the only way to monitor a brain hemorrage. It doesn’t even always show up in a cat scan.

An MRI is made of giant magnets, so NO you shouldn’t have one if you have any metals in your body. CT scans, neuro-vascular angiographs and other tests are used to do post-op follow ups. After 20 years, he’s likelihood of having another aneurysm if fairly slim. He’s more likely to die of other causes, foot-in-mouth disease perhaps.

Senator Joe Biden comes across as a good and honest person. Best wishes to him regarding his family, his/their health and well-being, however, his remarks about Senator Barack Obama, that if elected, he will be tested, really concern me and should concern all voters. I found those remarks very troubling.
I believe Senator Biden is having seconds thoughts about this election and would probably prefer to have Senator John McCain elected instead of Senator Obama, because he knows Senator McCain is better qualified to serve as POTUS than he (Biden) and Senator Obama. Senator Biden is a practicing Catholic who was told by five cardinals not to present himself for communion because of his comments and support for abortion, and stands on other issues. That means Senator Biden is ex-communicating himself for the sake of ambition.
Senator Obama is very extreme in his support for abortion/infanticide which denies medical treatment to infants who survive botched abortions and left to die.
Senator Biden who will turn 66 years of age next month probably prefers to lose an election than lose his soul. I can honestly say that I could never vote for Senator Barack Obama because of his stands on abortion/infanticide and other issues. I could write a long of reasons, but I don’t want to anger any Obama supporters. I’m voting for the candidate that supports life. No candidate is perfect, but Senator John McCain is the lesser of two evils, and I don’t have a problem with Gov. Palin as VP. May God keep our country and the rest of world safe, and bless us all.

As a physician that deals with MRIs ,daily, I would like to correct some of the misinformation advanced here.
Not all metallic structures are magnetic. We have long lists of which medical implants and devices which are MRI safe. Location of the metal is important. Small piece of iron from welding spark or machine shop in your eye could cause severe damage while a larger piece of shrapnel in the hip is safe.
Old brain aneurysm clips are not safe. Senator Biden should not have a MRI.
Senator Biden can and should have CT angiography which will show a recurrent aneurysm very well.
Recurrence of brain aneurysm is about 16% (Russian Roulette with 6 cylinders) which is not small, see following:
“We screened 610 patients who had been admitted between 1985 and 2001 for SAH by means of CT-angiography….With screening we detected 129 aneurysms in 96 (16%) patients, after a mean interval of 8.9 years. “ http://brain.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/128/10/2421
If Senator Biden has not have followup CT angiography, it shows bad judgement of either his physician or himself.

Every wonder why the liberal press has not called for Biden to release his complete medical records? It’s because they know those records would reveal he lied about his medical condition to dodge the draft when he received his induction notice. Biden was subject to the draft for most of the Vietnam draft era but continued to avoid service by applying (and it did require applying) for six separate deferments. Although in his best-selling memoir, “Promises to Keep,” Biden recounted his active childhood, working as a lifeguard and excelling at high school football, he never mentions asthma. Now he claims that “during the Vietnam War he got a draft notice but flunked the physical due to asthma.”
What actually happened was by the time Biden finally got his draft notice in 1968, he was already a lawyer so knew how to “manipulate the system.” His asthma was not detected during his draft physical but rather Biden appealed his induction by submitting “documentation” from a “private physician” notorious for “discovering” disqualifying features for well connected patients after they were notified for induction.
I would point out that draft quotas were assigned by draft board. When one man evaded, someone else, often less educated or advantaged and always less eligible, served in his place. Additionally, because many of the more capable natural leaders avoided service, we often had to settle for the LT Cally’s of the world for leadership. Think of how many American lives could have been saved if leaders of Cheney or Biden’s potential had done their duty. Isn’t it ironic how correct President Clinton was when he used to say that “it’s the little guy who plays by the rules that always ends up taking it in the neck.”
Now this is something worthy of a media investigation. Why isn’t NBC asking for Biden to release his complete Medical Records like they are Palin — “what’s good for the goose is good for the gander” – isn’t it?

Can’t let the comment above by “Stump” go unanswered. He states: McCain is associated with “… a guy named John Singlaub … an ultra conservative, right-wing group…” Stump wouldn’t be referring to Retired Army Major General John Singlaub, the guy famous for parachuting into the Philippines in advance of the US invasion in WWII to free American POWs before they could be executed by their cruel Japanese captures, would it? Also the three war vet who served multiple tours in Korea and Vietnam. I’d much rather “associate” with the honorably retired General Singlaub than the unrepentant terrorist Bill Ayers! How about you?
