Biden Sticks to Script; GOP Claims He’s Been ‘Muzzled’
ABC News’ Matt Jaffe Reports: Impersonating Sen. Joe Biden last weekend on Saturday Night Live comedian Jason Sudeikis shouted, "Gird your loins! By the beard of Jupiter, gird your loins!" But there was no loin-girding today in Jupiter, Fla., nor was there anything but another standard stump speech from the Democratic VP nominee, prompting the Republicans to claim Biden has been ‘muzzled’.
Calling Biden’s on-script message to the Sunshine State on retirement plans and Israeli security "proof that his entire candidacy is nothing more than scripted bluster and unscripted blunders", McCain-Palin spokesman Ben Porritt said the Democratic nominee "has muzzled his own running mate for offering insight into Barack Obama’s plan to raise taxes."
In an appeal to Florida voters, Biden referenced his thirty-plus years in the Senate working with Israel, suggesting that a "direct connection" between a "stronger America" and a "more secure Israel".
"I’ve worked with every prime minister of Israel from Golda Meir right through to the present prime minister," said the six-term senator from Delaware. "I want to tell you something: that’s what Barack and I know, we know what the Israelis know and all our friends know. That is, the greater the respect for America, the stronger America is in the world, the more secure Israel and the rest of our friends are in the world. So folks, this is a direct connection. It’s about establishing once again America’s respect in the world and people being willing around the world to follow us."
At Roger Dean Stadium, spring training site of the Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals, Biden warned supporters that this presidential race is "in the final lap here."
For the past week, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee has scarcely deviated from his short and sweet 20-minute stump. As he appealed to elderly voters here in this southeastern Florida city, today was no different.
"Here’s what Barack and I believe," Biden told the crowd of 2000. "We believe there should be no privatization of Social Security, no raising of the retirement age. And we believe, we believe there should be no income taxes for seniors for who have an income of less than $50,000 a year. Zero, zero income tax. In fact, we believe and we’ll propose that they shouldn’t even have to file a tax return, literally."
In one of this morning’s few moments that have might have been unscripted, Biden dubbed the Republican ticket "Bret and Bart Maverick".
"Here’s the part I love," he said, before launching into his usual imitation of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and his running mate Gov. Sarah Palin. "Hey, maverick! I’m a maverick! You’re a maverick! We’re the maverick team, right?’ You know? Bret and Bart Maverick. I mean, they’re the mavericks, right?"
In reality, Biden said, "it’s George W. Bush and the sidekicks."
This evening the Delaware lawmaker links up with Obama for a joint rally in Sunrise, their ninth appearance together, before departing later tonight for St. Louis.

Obama is sticking to a tight script as well, why mess up at the finish line? Someone DOES need to muzzle Palin and McCain. Also, if the GOP spent as much time worrying about the McCain campaign and less worrying about the Obama campaign…maybe McCain would be doing better in GOP strongholds. ;-0

I’ve played a lot of sports in my time and you can tell a lot about a persons character by how they react when they’re losing or have lost. Some people are gracious, play well, do their best, and congratulate you when you beat them. Others, the more contemptable ones, get angry, cheat, yell, complain, try to injure your best players, and blame it on everyone but themselves when they lose. Which of these players do you think the GOP is?
Posted by: Swoosh | October 29, 2008, 2:12 pm 2:12 pm
Biden didn’t say anything different about Obama (except that he had a spine of steel) than Lieberman said about both candidates. That the new president, whether it be McCain or Obama, would be tested. This was common news released by the NSA a week before Biden restated it, adding that Obama would have a “spine of steel”. It’s just another pathetic grasping of straws by the desperate GOP.
Posted by: Dave | October 29, 2008, 2:16 pm 2:16 pm
The GOP should just realize that they’re going to lose and go down with some dignity. They’d probably get better polling if they ran a decent campaign. The American people are sick of politics as usual and hungry for change, so what does the GOP do? The same tired negative campaign that gave us the worst president we’ve ever had. Voters aren’t going to fall for it again.

I honestly don’t understand why Senator Biden’s comment about a GENERATED crisis is not seen to be a very savvy forewarning. This “gaffe” business is based on the desperate Republican spin on the comment – spin which of course totally ignores the crucial word “generated.” (this word “generated” was most certainly emphasized by Senator Biden in his tone of voice when he made the remark.)I, for one, believe I have more than once witnessed the far right GOP create news headlining events for their own benefit. And it seemed obvious that this was what Senator Biden was bringing up. I wonder why the Republican spin on this has been so widely accepted? I don’t call Senator Biden’s words a gaffe, I call them a wise preventative statement. I think the GOP leadership is probably thanking their lucky stars if they think Senator Biden is no longer freely speaking up.

McCain should muzzle the winker. But then we might not realize how stupid she is.
Biden is eloquent, and if he is perceived to have a problem, perhaps it is because he is REAL and speaks his mind, then the other campaign takes it out of context and repeats it 200 times. That’s a clue that they don’t have anything new to say. Obama and Biden both speak from the heart and speak to the real, thinking people of this country. (Can you tell I am fed up with the lying, one-line, hateful, divisive, non-thinking, paranoid republicans?)

No matter who wins the election for president of these United States, THAT PERSON WILL BE TESTED! The rest of the world has been dragged about by the Bush administration; they’re suffering as much as we are with the economy; we were attacked on 9/11; other countries throughout the world have suffered terrorist attacks since then and the U.S. is seen as the power which has dragged them down. It doesn’t matter to them that those other countries have problems that are largely of their own making, they’ll look to make us the scapegoat. Biden was only stating what is logical and pointing out that dealing with whatever tests are thrown at the president, Obama will be “Cool Hand Luke” whereas McCain will go off like Al Capone.

At least Biden is talking about what he and Obama will do for America. All I hear from the McCain/Palin croud is put-downs, tear-downs, slander, lies, and whining. Biden is a credible VP. Palin is a very coniving politician who would toss her grandmother under the bus if it would help her politically. BTW…what about Palin’s new ethics violation where she used state money to pay for her husbands travels? When it is added to the her kids unauthorized travel expenses, she has already bilked Alaska out of over $54,000. If she looses this last ethics charge, she may force the State of Alaska to pay for the travel of all the racers on the Iron Dog snowmobile race, the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest. I can only imagine how that makes my friends still living in Alaska feel about her and her terrorist loving husband.

Let’s recap, shall we? Obama releases a copy of his birth certificate sent to him by the state of Hawaii, so reichwingnuts insist that he either didn’t release it or that it’s a forgery, even though no one with any knowledge of birth certificates from the state of Hawaii will agree with them.
Obama describes his ‘relationship’ with Prof. Ayres in a way that everyone who has known both of them (including Republicans who served on the same boards with them) insist is a true characterization. Reichwingnuts insist there’s a conspiracy.
Obama mentions ‘spread the wealth’ and reichwingnuts scream “COMMIE SOCIALIST!” Of course, those same reichwingnuts have been spreading middle class wealth to the pockets of the richest 1% for almost 30 years now with fascist economic and tax policies, but Mussolini sounds a lot like Mooseburger to them, so that’s okay.
Now, the Fox News Unbalanced Fear Network coordinates an attack with the McCain campaign to inform us that Obama is a terrorist because he knows Prof. Khalidi, a Palestinian-American, with whom he disagrees on points of Middle East policy. While Obama disagrees with him, McCain, from 1993 to at least 1998 provided Khalidi with nearly a million dollars in funding from the IRI, a Republican organization whose chairman is John McCain.
It just gets better and better.
Meanwhile, the extreme nutcases who still support the Republican Party are seen as the shame of America by our allies around the world, causing many of them to begin to view America as a dangerous lunatic asylum. That’s going to help us a lot, I’m sure.

The thing that is so great about the GOP and the negativity it generates — it creates more campaign contributions for Obama. It is amazing that the Republicans haven’t caught on that for every negative story they generate — Obamas grassroot campaign contributors go to the OBAMA website and contribute another $5, $10, $15 or so dollars. The Republicans focus on non-issues have fueled the Democrats to be able to present the most organized, well-oiled campaign in the history of modern campaigning. When you have your own party members abandoning ship for a better vessel – you should know you will eventually be dead in the water. If the Republicans had stuck with the issues, stopped the tactics of old politics and vetted its VP choice, McCain poll numbers would be much higher. Don’t say polls don’t matter either. If they didn’t, everyone wouldn’t be so focused on them. They just don’t want folks to think those don’t matter when they aren’t in your favor.
