Can ‘Joe The Plumber’ Swing His State to McCain?

Joe Klein from latest “Time” talks about Obama wanting to talk to the Taliban without pre-conditions. Well, next will be Osama at the table where he can say” Brother, we did it. Wish our cousin Saddam Hussein was here at the table too”

It seems even the Plumber route is not really working that well, especially after knowing ‘Joe’ does not make more than $250,000/year and is not a licenced plumber. He has to be licenced in order to run a business according to state laws.
So really, a great pecentage of Americans will not be taxed more under Obama anyway. McCain once more is speaking lies.

I think that McCain should try and communicate his record as a fiscal conservative, in particular the obvious corrupt relationship the mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freedie Mac had (has?) with those on capitol hill. Clearly there was an improper “quid pro quo” relationship between governmental regulatory oversite and campaign donations to these corrupt politicians. If he hammered the other side of the isle in this area he might be able to break through to the apparently mesmerized American public with the party that supposedly champions the poor.

The policies that undermined Fannie and Freddy were part of the repeal of the Glass-Steagal act of 1933, key provisions of which protected against exactly the kind of unregulated credit speculation which did so much damage to Fannie and Freddie. The repeal of Glass-Steagal was led by Republican Senator Phil Gramm – NOT Bill Clinton. Clinton signed the bill, ( Gramm-Leach-Bliley Financial Services Modernization Act, Pub.L. 106-102) but Phil Gramm led the charge and put his name on it.

Joe the Plumber will only work with those people who don’t understand how the graduated tax system the U.S. uses works or someone who does understand how it works and has a taxable gross well over $250,000. We have given tax cuts to the very executives who have destroyed out banking system requiring the largest government bailouts of the markets in our history.
No, the GOP does not represent Joe the plumber, or any of the rest of us who cannot afford to shop at Saks and Neiman Marcus. If you watch the entire Joe the Plumber exchange with Obama – not the McCain camp edit – Obama answered Joe’s questions very well. It really looked like Joe was satisfied with the response.
I feel bad for the guy for the way skeletons have just poured out of his closet, but he made a choice to stick his neck out – Obama didn’t knock on his door. If he was an organized GOP plant, they really screwed up the vetting again.

Here I am with over 3 college degrees making $11/hour due to lack of opportunities in this country, and MCCain relates to Joe the Plumber. Plumbers, as advertised in my city, charge $69/hour. Rangel paid his State and Federal taxes, he simply failed to record rental income on a house he owned in the Dominican Republic because he didn’t realize that it was generating rental income (because he never saw it – the management company plowed it right back into the upkeep of the house and the money never left the island). Moreover, when Rangel found out, he turned himself into the the ethics committee and demanded an investigation of himself to clear his own name.

Yesterday, the Tanning Bed Media discovered unpaid tax liens against Joe Wurzelbacher. Two days ago, we would have said, “Who?” He’s better known this week as Joe the Plumber after his impromptu dialogue with Barack Obama produced a blatantly redistributionist answer from the Democratic presidential candidate.
In their haste to pillory Joe for the audacity of asking a tough question of Obama, the Tanning Bed Media missed a couple of other interesting tax liens. Patterico does the work of the TBM:

If tax liens are such an indicator of character and trustworthiness, wouldn’t it have more significance for the treasurer of a presidential campaign than for a man who just asked a question of the candidate? If the national media has such an interest in investigating a plumber who made a couple of national appearances, why wouldn’t they have at least the same interest in the people running a major party presidential campaign? Just In! The latest AP Poll and Gallup Poll are showing either a deadheat or John McCain with a slight lead. Yes, this poll is right on. The most trusted poll used is the gallup poll and it is also showing a dead head, including McCain with a slight edge in both Ohio and Florida, which are must win states for the candidates. You all have to realize that most of the other polls showing Obama ahead are just popular vote. It does not reflect the closeness of the actual race for the different states. Joe the Plumber is McCain’s last gasp. The stock market went down 500 points yesterday. On last night’s news I heard about large corporation layoffs (Merck, Yahoo, etc.) that added up to 16,000 to 20,000. Yesterday I heard there had been 2,300 large layoffs, that is layoffs of 50 or more people each. Retirees have lost Two Trillion in retirement funds while McCain’s advisers have profited by lobbying for, representing or working for the very companies that caused the meltdown. McCain adviser Carly Fiorina laid off 18,000 people. She was rewarded with a 40 million dollar golden parachute. People have lost jobs, homes, health care, pensions, retirement funds, the ability to send their children to college or vocational school, and in the face of all that all McCain makes nasty robocalls and talks about Joe the Plumber. How do those things help hurting people?

At least there be less talk about privatizing Social Security with the way the market has been. Another BAD republican idea that, Thank God, was never enacted.

Wherever John McCain appears on the stump in these waning days of the presidential campaign, he is always accompanied by his imaginary friend “Joe the Plumber,” but it is the specter of Karl Marx that lurks just offstage.
Reverting back to the Republicanism of eons ago, when he was just a child, McCain inveighs against the “socialist” design of Barack Obama’s tax platform. This delusional ranting, like so much of his behavior this year, tells us nothing about Obama (or socialism!) but much about him.
Let’s begin with the dishonesty of the McCain rant. What Obama proposes is to restore tax rates on the wealthy to the same level as during the Clinton administration — that is, to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire without renewing them for individuals and families reporting more than $250,000 in annual income. There is nothing radical in this idea, let alone socialistic (especially compared with the violations of capitalist orthodoxy that McCain has supported recently as emergency measures to rescue the financial industry).
Not only is there nothing radical about repairing the unfairness of the Bush tax cuts, but it is precisely the same position that McCain argued when they were first enacted. Is his memory so poor that he cannot remember saying the Bush tax plan was “skewed” to benefit the rich? Having reversed that position for political convenience, he has also invented a different justification for opposing Bush back then — namely that he thought the cuts were fiscally irresponsible. But that isn’t what he said in 2000 and 2001.
Now let’s address the ignorance of his rant. Progressive taxation is a tradition of Western economics that dates back considerably further than Marx and the Communist manifesto, with all due respect to the wingnuts who seem to be writing McCain’s speeches. He admits that he has neglected his economic studies, so perhaps he isn’t aware that Adam Smith, revered philosopher of market capitalism, advocated tax fairness as far back as 1776, the fateful year when he published the first edition of “The Wealth of Nations.”
Although there was then no income tax, Smith’s principled judgment on the justice of higher taxes on those who could pay more, enunciated on several occasions, could not be clearer. He favored property taxes and luxury taxes because they would fall most heavily on the wealthy.
He would have levied a sizeable tax on all seven of the McCain homes plus an additional chop at all of Cindy McCain’s credit card binges.
In “Wealth of Nations,” Smith wrote: “The subjects of every state ought to contribute towards the support of the government, as nearly as possible, in proportion to their respective abilities; that is, in proportion to the revenue which they respectively enjoy under the protection of the state.”
Few legislators are more familiar than McCain, in his maverick incarnation, with the enormous fortunes raked in by oilmen, defense contractors, bond holders and the whole host of modern capitalists under the protection of the American state. The notion that those fortunes, often gotten in a parody of the free market, should be taxed at the same rate as the earnings of a plumber would strike Smith as monumentally unjust and an attack on the moral foundations of society.
Finally, let’s discuss the other bit of demagoguery in McCain’s most recent speeches, when he complains about the “redistribution of wealth”
and equates an income tax rebate for working people with “welfare.” Leaving aside the racial subtext of those remarks, it is hard to say whether they display ignorance, dishonesty or both. The American tax system, like all other taxation in modern nations, has always redistributed wealth. Sometimes it sends streams of money upward, from low-income taxpayers into the pockets of corporate executives; at other times it sends those streams downward, to assist the very poor.
But to cast socialist aspersions on a tax refund to working families whose incomes are too low to pay income taxes is to paint a big pink stripe onto McCain’s supposed idol, Ronald Reagan. In 1986, Reagan signed legislation greatly increasing the Earned Income Tax Credit, a credit for low-income workers that reduces the impact of payroll taxes in order to boost take-home pay above poverty levels. When the credit is more than the amount of federal income taxes owed by an individual, that person receives a tax “refund.” Reagan praised the earned income tax credit as the best “anti-poverty” and “pro-family” legislation ever enacted by Congress.
It must be troubling for Republicans to learn that according to McCain, the Gipper was a socialist, too.

Overall, 39 percent of the Palin stories were negative, 28 percent were positive and 33 percent neutral. Only 5 percent of the coverage was about her personal life. He was “nearly the invisible man,” the group says, and his coverage was far more negative than Palin’s. That may be because Biden tends to make news primarily when he commits gaffes.
The project says McCain’s coverage started out positive after the GOP convention but nosedived with his frequently changing reaction to the financial crisis. McCain’s character attacks against Obama hurt the Democrat but yielded even more negative coverage for the senator from Arizona.

The most negative element of the Palin coverage involved scrutiny of her record as Alaska governor, with 64 percent of the stories carrying a negative tone and just 7 percent positive. The coverage of her interview with ABC’s Charlie Gibson was a wash, but stories about her subsequent sitdown with CBS’s Katie Couric were 57 percent negative and 14 percent positive.

Obama relinquished his Illinois law license in early 2007. Why would
Obama give up something that provided his primary source of income
and something he spent so much time and energy obtaining? Andy Martin
filed a complaint in IL on March 13, 2007 stating that Obama had lied
on his IL bar application. Obama had 17 outstanding traffic violations
that he had failed to take care of. Mr. Martin discovered that Obama
would not be prosecuted because he no longer had his law license. I contacted Andy Martin and this was his response:
“Nothing. Obama had already resigned as a lawyer and so they had no jurisdiction over him.”
“Not if they have lost jurisdiction over the individual. They can’t punish someone who has resigned, which is why so many corrupt lawyers in Illinois resign before they are disbarred.“

Regardless, you seem to be attacking people for questioning Obama’s qualifications. I am one of those people and, yes, I am a democrat. I supported Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in the primaries. But now, after watching the campaigns and how the media treated the two sides, I have decided to vote for McCain/Palin.
Barack Hussein Obama’s inexperience and past associations are not the only factors in my decision. When I see people like Gen. Colin Powell, who supported Obama just because he is black, and also, when I see 99% of the black community supporting Obama, I have a reason to believe that there is a ruthless effort to put a balck man, despite his inexperience and questionable character, in the White House. This scares me a lot.
Therefore, I will be voting for the more experienced and qualified candidate, John McCain. Do you have a problem with my reasoning?

Once upon a time we were all Americans. Democrat, Republican, Independent whatever party; we were all Americans. Of course I am referring to US citizens in this case (and those wishing to be someday). When did we lose that connection? Why all the hostile talk (I know this has been around since the country started, but it seems worse today because it is not just the candidates)? No wonder political campaigns stoop to the lowest common denominator (slinging mud). How about a debate that debates facts and solutions without all this trash talk? I’ve got news for you. Both parties are part of the problems and solutions. It ‘U.S.’, not ‘THEM’ that caused our problems. Poor education. Dumb voters and smart people not voting. People don’t research candidates and their policies. People vote with their ‘parties’ or ‘hearts’, but not necessarily for the best candidate (of course this is also up to debate).
I know who I’m voting for and ABCNews, CNN, MSNBC or any other major (or minor) news outlet will influence my decision, but they won’t sway me one way or another. Same goes for blogs. I think the only reason McCain is holding on for dear life to Joe is that his other attacks have not worked against Obama to any great degree. By teaching students, isn;t Ayers influencing young minds and possibly teaching young people to be terrorist.
