Commission Chair: We Didn’t Know About Ifill’s Book, and We don’t Care

Frank Fahrenkopf, the Republican co-chairman of the Commission on Presidential Debates, told Fox News’ Carl Cameron that the commission didn’t know about Gwen Ifill’s book about Obama when it named her to moderate the vice-presidential debate — but said the commission isn’t bothered by it because it’s not just about Obama, and because "she hasn’t even written the chapter on Obama."

Per Greta Van Susteren’s blog, Fahrenkopf said: “We didn’t know when we named Gwen about the book. Although I will say this: knowing now that she hasn’t even written the chapter on Obama, it doesn’t concern us.” http://gretawire.foxnews.com/2008/10/02/the-debate-chair-said-they-did-not-know-about-ifills-book/

Fahrenkopf noted that plenty of journalists — including Ifill’s fellow debate moderators, Bob Schieffer and Jim Lehrer — have written books without compromising their journalistic integrity.

“Since it’s not just on Obama, it covers a whole wide expanse of new black politicians, we’re not concern about it,” he said. “We pick our moderators based upon our trust and the knowledge of their lifetime work in journalism, their integrity, their ability to be unbiased, and to do it right. So we have great confidence in Gwen.”

And he made light of the carping that always comes the commission’s way: “Those complaints in the last 24 hours have been that there’s a secret listening device in Gov. Palin’s ear and that the people are going to be giving her the answers to the questions. We get this every four years and we’ve learned to live with it.”

The commission named its moderators August 5; Time magazine mentioned Ifill’s book later that month.

Of course you don’t care! That’s sorta the whole point!
I’m just glad Gwen’s reputation for integrity is lost forever. Everyone knows you should at least disclose this kind of thing in the beginning. Any honest person would.
Adios to your reputation Gwen!

So take that John McShame…. quit your whining and lets get on with the debate

If Sarah palin does poorly tonight, it is all somebody elses fault!

Posted by: Truth Matters | October 2, 2008, 3:53 pm 3:53 pm

Ifill should still step aside.
Just like Pelosi, Reid they have shown rotten leadership.

Posted by: Melissa | October 2, 2008, 3:54 pm 3:54 pm

Palin should just turn to Gwen tonight and congratulate her on her book and ask if she’ll sign it for her on it’s release day which is inauguration day. Tell Gwen she’ll be up at the podium getting sworn in with McCain if she wasn’t sure where to reach her.
;-)

Remember the democrats (Edwards & Obama & Hillary) refused to do a Fox debate for the <primaries. They boycotted it and it never occured.
Now McCain/Palin are suppose to just suck it up and do a debate with a partisan hack in the GENERAL and be okay with it.
Bizarro world indeed.

If McCain had taken his VP decision seriously and picked a qualified candidate, he wouldn’t need to engage in this pathetic whining nonsense about the HIGHLY RESPECTED Gwen Ifill.
IT’S SAD.
JOHN: YOU SCREWED UP.

well i care. conflict of interest is conflict of interest. if obama is elected, ifill hopes to make hundreds of thousands of dollars off the sale of her book; if he loses, she will sell 4 copies. motives are seldom pure and this woman is no saint: ifill has motive to assist the candidate she supports; that is not fair.

Posted by: ron | October 2, 2008, 3:56 pm 3:56 pm

Republicans did a debate with Chris Matthews as moderator, but Dems wouldn’t do one on Fox News.
Can you say WUSSY BOYS????
Lol.

Posted by: No Obama | October 2, 2008, 3:57 pm 3:57 pm

Columbia Journalism Review disagrees. She stands to benefit financially if Obama wins; thus, she should be disqualified. I don’t understand why this is so hard for others to understand. She has a clear financial conflict of interest. She should be gone! It would be exactly the same if she (or any other moderator) were writing a book about McCain that were clearly tied to HIS winning the election. If there’s a stake in the outcome, that person should not be involved. Period.
And Ifill definitely should have informed the commission and not even taken the job.

How can Gwen’s reputation be lost when it’s the Republican Co-Chairperson on Presidential Debates that said he doesn’t care. If I remember correctly, that means his party could give a rip about the book. Only McShame is crying, probably because his “hand picked” bimbo is going to make him look like a bigger fool.

Posted by: algwriter | October 2, 2008, 3:59 pm 3:59 pm

Gwen named her book in July. Anyone can google it and find the details.
Stop making excuses for Sarah. Let them debate. If there is bias, everyone will see it.
Then we can all blog about that.

Smacks of desperation from the McPain camp.

Sarah Palin has committed yet another political blunder after claiming she had held talks with a British ambassador – talks that never actually took place.
In an answer to questions about her foreign policy experience ahead of tonight’s make-or-break vice presidential TV debate, her aides listed numerous contacts with foreign officials – including Britain’s ambassador to Washington, Sir Nigel Sheinwald.
However the meeting never occurred. Officials at the embassy swiftly contacted the McCain-Palin campaign to inform them of the discrepancy.
A British Embassy spokesman said the error arose after Sir Nigel’s name was listed among those who had attended a US Governor’s meeting in July.
Mrs Palin was at the meeting in her role as Governor of Alaska. However Sir Nigel pulled out at the last minute, leaving his name on the guest list.
The embarrassing mishap comes as Mrs Palin faces the biggest challenge of her political life tonight in a head-to-head vice-presidential debate with Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

She hasn’t asked a single question and yet all the Palin sympathizers are convinced they will be biased.
Why so worried about your candidate? It’s almost sad how little confidence you have in her.

Posted by: really | October 2, 2008, 4:05 pm 4:05 pm

Ifill is old school journalism at it’s best. She’s one of the few journalists left that can separate her profession from opinion.People are interjecting their opinion of her book without even knowing what it’s about. Talk about unprofessional. People have become so jaded and skeptical.A generation of excuses. That’s what happens when you let your kids win all the time. They look for excuses. I suppose if Biden wins the debate, that will be Palin’s excuse. The moderator. Well, if your good at what you do and know your stuff, it dosen’t matter who the moderator is. They both get the same questions and the same amount of time. With the invention of Fox news and the Olberman’s and O’Reilly’s out there, no wonder people have forgotten what a real journalist does. I for one miss those journalists.

It is stunning that the committee didn’t know about Ifill’s Obama book. Gwen Ifill needs to behave professionally regardless of her feeling about race. This time she failed, and it will take years for her to regain her credibility.

Posted by: tina | October 2, 2008, 4:21 pm 4:21 pm

Gwen should have disclosed this fact, but did not. Same as a lie. Disgraceful

Posted by: emma divine | October 2, 2008, 4:21 pm 4:21 pm

It won’t matter. Everyone’s made up their mind that Palin will win even before she steps on stage.
Everyone will give Palin the win because its better TV if they do.

Posted by: Greg | October 2, 2008, 4:29 pm 4:29 pm

1st off it isn’t a book about Obama, its a book about Blacks in Politics. 2nd it would still sell regardless if he is president or not, it shows the path towards their political careers.
Why don’t we just get Karl Rove to moderate it, that would be fair right?

Posted by: make it known | October 2, 2008, 4:30 pm 4:30 pm

What exactly is she going to do to hurt Palin? Ask her what papers she reads?
Oh no, that’s too hard. BIAS!
Frank Fahrenkopf, the REPUBLICAN co-chairman of the Commission on Presidential Debates said the commission isn’t bothered.
This is just another excuse for Plain if she flails. Of course it’s always someone elses fault. And the debate hasn’t even started.
PATHETIC this is the best the Republicans have to offer.
OBAMA/BIDEN. Say goodnight Republicans. It’s over!

The REPUBLICAN Whiners are here again!
Gwen’s book is NOT been kept a secret!
It has been on pre-order sales at Amazon and Barnes and Noble for months!
Ifill’s book was mentioned by name in a July 21 Associated Press article by Kinney Littlefield. The roster of debate moderators was revealed back August 5 after. After it has already been advertised in Magazines!
Ifill has moderated many debates over the years.
SHE DID NOT LIE or HIDE anything!
She is a professional!

Posted by: The Republican Party is the STUPID party! | October 2, 2008, 4:36 pm 4:36 pm

Gwen should have disclosed this fact, but did not.
—————————–
ACTUALLY, the book was announced in JULY. It’s not done and it’s not even about Obama, it’s about black politicians.
And why does the McCain campaign just start complaining in the last two days? It couldn’t be that the golden girl has made an ass of herself in every interview recently could it?
CAN WE PLEASE LOWER THE BAR EVEN MORE SO MS PLAIN CAN FINALLY JUMP OVER IT?

Posted by: But she's so "likeable" | October 2, 2008, 4:37 pm 4:37 pm

I am curious – if BO does win, are you all you McCain haters going to be Obama haters when he gets in office and everyone discovers that – OH MY GOD, HE LIED! Not Barack, can’t be!
What gets me is that everyone is hounding Palin because of inexperience – yet refuse to look at where all the so-called experienced people and experts have managed to get us so far.
When are you idiots going to wake up, smell the coffee and quit tolerating this cr@p from the politicians – on both sides of the fence?
I am still undecided. It doesn’t matter which one gets elected, we are thoroughly screwed either way.

Posted by: Just Wondering | October 2, 2008, 4:38 pm 4:38 pm

They both get the same questions people…where is the bias? One question is not worded differently than the other. They moderator’s job is to keep the debate moving. She doesn’t stand up and raise the hand of the winner like a referee at a boxing match.
People are losing jobs, homes and life savings and you guys are worried about who the moderator is or is not at a “VP” debate! Man, what is this country coming to? No wonder Congress turned a blind eye while Wall Street was raping the country. The people were concerned about the wrong things and not holding them accountable!

Posted by: Johnson | October 2, 2008, 4:40 pm 4:40 pm

Who will win today?
Winning is in the “eyes(ears) of the beholder”. Palin will go on the attack irrespective of Gwen’s questions with random ear-catchy statements. McCain camp will spin its as a grat victory and renewal of Palin. With a expectation so oow anything she says will be construed as victory, susbstance or not. Will the voters buy it? Why not, did we not buy into Bush?

Posted by: VP | October 2, 2008, 4:40 pm 4:40 pm

I have never heard so much whining done coming from the Republican Party before. Qwen has been doing moderating forever. Face the facts Repubs, that the party that has been in charge for seven painful years is coming to a close. It’s time for America to get back to healing. It won’t get there if another Republican President is elected. I can’t wait to go and pull the lever for Obama on November 4th and so is the majority of Americans. The only ones still voting for McCain are those folks that want change also but refuse to admit it’s time for a change. GET OVER IT!!

Posted by: LF | October 2, 2008, 4:42 pm 4:42 pm

algwriter, just once could you post something without “mcshame/mcsame” and with facts, not just something you made up?
McCain and Palin both said they trust Gwen Ifill to handle this professionally. They have not taken issue with this; others have taken issue with it, including professional journalists who see this for what it is: a financial conflict of interest.
It’s fine if you are zealous in your support for your candidate; could you just please at least temper it with the facts and quit the name calling for even one post?

Obama is REASSURING for Americans!
Gambling opportunist McCaint is RECKLESS for Americans!
What does ‘No drama Obama’ VP pick says about Obama’s great and REASSURING judgment? Fantastic!
Americans aren’t wasting time questioning Obama’s VP pick.
Obama is REASSURING for Americans!
McCaint on the other, flies by the seat of his old pants, and leaves Americans in a quandary!
America in these times of enormous challenges, needs a President with a settle mind, measured speech, and wise, reassuring actions.
That is Obama

Meet the Press Interview:
TIM RUSSERT: The fact is you are different than George Bush.
SEN. McCAIN: No. No. The fact is that I have agreed with President Bush far more than I have disagreed. And on the transcendent issues, the most important issues of our day, I’ve been totally in agreement and support of President Bush.
THANKS “MAVERICK”. COULDN’T HAVE SAID IT BETTER MYSELF!

The original PATRIOTS were not military people spewing meaningless platitudes about “victory” and “freedom”.
The original PATRIOTS were everyday people that stood up to a government that had oppressed them and did not give then representation.
That’s what we’re doing this election!
THE NEW PATRIOTS for OBAMA!

The conflict of interest is apparent and odious. You can’t actively participate in the debate process/election process of a politician that you’re actively writing a book about and say that you are disinterested. It’s a sham. The only way this is appropriate is if Mrs. Ifill believes she can be neutral, the McCain campaign was advised as to the book and it’s subject matter, and the McCain campaign consented to her as the moderator. To my knowledge none of that occurred. This may not seem like a big deal, but it strikes at the core of journalistic integrity. Lawyers get a bad rap from most people, but you’d face disciplinary sanctions for pulling something like this in the legal arena.

Funny how the Obamites are pretending that everyone knew about the book beforehand. That explains why Gwen did not reveal it to the commission because all they had to do was some research on their own. That is like having a convicted felon not writing down his conviction on an employment application to later point out that it was in his local paper and they should have known about it, with some simple research. Obamites really are not very bright. They do like to parrot what they have been told. If Gwen was professional she would have brought up the book first, and then possibly reclused herself from this task. There were plenty of other people to choose from. If she were honest and upright she would have done differently. Secondly, her saying that the book with Obamas name on the title does not have the Obama chapter written yet surely should not be taken as a credible report. She already blew her credibility. The fact that some rep officials are outwardly ok with this is not to assume that they dont privately think it is serious BS. Obamites are not to be trusted. They have zero intellectual honesty.

Obama would not let her step down. She had already given Biden the questions! They would have only had one day to prep with a new moderator!

Vote No to Pork.
that 150 billion added to the Bill, could have been added to morgages, child care, schooling, new energy forms. But for golden safty nets for Politicans who caused this. Why?
Congress should not have gone home. Or did they ‘Truely Know’ their Scare Tactics, would work?
America and the World deserve, to be happy.
Nuclear Power for Mangos? No. Sounds like something more, in that.
We could have sent Hydro, Solar, or Wind power plans to help a foreign country.
Vote Independant, and watch CNN and MSNBC, for ALL sides and Points of View.
Vote No to Pork add ons.

Bob Schieffer actually had to be pulled off a pro republican story at one time. Bob Schieffer’s brother was a business partner of George W. Bush. Has anyone had an issue with him moderating a presidential debate? Any question why McCain was so quick to approve him as moderator? Fox was rejected along with ABC. Get some Midol and move on. Palin will sink or swim without Ifill. Couric proved that.
Tom Brokaw used outdated info on sunday’s meet the press and has yet to inform the audience of his bias. And they will both be moderating with their candidate onstage just like charlie gibson. so spare me the whining about Gwen Ifill. I would just hope it doesn’t change how Ifill will handle the alaskan wondermop.
If mccain’s mulligan men didn’t know what a lot of others did, it proves they can’t multitask or properly manage a campaign. Only sarah palin’s witch doctor would know what else they would destroy if they got to the white house.
