Former Hillary (Now McCain) Supporters Say New Obama Ad Featuring Palin Winking Is Sexist

They don’t like the new Obama ad, these women.

Feminist quotes courtesy of the McCain campaign.

Shelly Mandell, president of Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women: "I am outraged by the new ad put out by Barack Obama. It is sexist and demeaning to women. These tactics started with Hillary Clinton and continue, growing even more disgusting with Gov. Palin. I was a Hillstar for Hillary and an avid supporter. Trashing two women clearly in a sexist manner in one election is an outrage and must be identified and stopped. There must be consequences. Let female Obama supporters take a good look at this and still believe their candidate supports women’s rights and women’s dignity."

Prameela Bartholomeusz, DNC Platform Committee Member: "I am once again stunned at the personal and sexist attacks by the Obama campaign against Gov. Palin. This latest ad is sexist and offensive. The Gov. of Alaska has been managing and balancing a budget of $10 billion; I think she knows a bit about economics. Sen. Obama never spoke up against sexism during the primary season, and is not speaking out against misogyny during this phase of the election season — he is contributing to it. I have no confidence that Sen. Obama will fight for women’s issues if elected. This sets women back decades."

Stephanie Bressler, Ph.D, Hillary Clinton supporter, University of Scranton women and politics professor: "It’s a sexist example of reducing a woman to an object – a wink – and denying her a voice. Her lips are actually moving, but she’s not allowed to be heard."

Amy Siskind, ambassador for Hillary: "When Senator Hillary Clinton was demeaned and degraded during the Presidential Primary, many of us of, myself included, vowed ‘never again’. The treatment of Governor Palin by both the main stream media, and now the Obama Campaign, shows that the misogyny fest is alive and well in our country. There has been a complete and utter smear job of our fellow citizen, Sarah Palin, who is only trying to serve her country."

Shelly Mandell is an idiot. Palin winked all by herself during a nationally televised debate, and that’s not the only time she has done so.

Oh, please!!! Palin can call Obama and Biden every dirty name in the book, but no one can say anything to or about her??? Get real!! More importantly, the ad was not about Palin; it was about McCain’s BAD judgment in choosing her.

Posted by: RC | October 29, 2008, 8:16 pm 8:16 pm

Not sure why repubs are complaining. The wink is Sarah Palin’s signature gesture. Some think it is cute, I think it is offensive but there is nothing sexist about it. As a woman, Sarah Palin and her values offend me. Any “feminist” voting for the McCain/Palin ticket is not a real feminist. Sarah Palin does not represent or advance feminist values.

Posted by: LJ | October 29, 2008, 8:32 pm 8:32 pm

The ad is sexist because Palin tries so hard to be sexy?
I don’t get it.
BTW, not a single feminist in this country supports Sarah Palin.
And she knows it; that’s why she recently in the MSNBC interview refused to confirm that she saw herself as a feminist.
Plus, McCain sat next to her. McCain just LOVES skirts and high heels; he HATES feminists, even tough a lot of feminists tese days wear skirts and high heels.

OMG, get real.
Winking is not a female thing. Men do it too.
Palin just does it more than most, men or women.

Look, nobody can say anything about Obama or it’s racist so it’s only fair that no one can say anything about Palin that could be construed as sexist. There has been plenty of sexism in this campaign but nobody says a word about it. God help us if anyone does anything that could be twisted into racism, however. Racism has actually been used as a tool in this election to help suppress dissension

Look anyone who watched the Dem primaries knows Obama has very little respect for women who are political objects for him to kick around.
Whether it is Hillary or Palin, Obama is only concerned about himself and sees women as substandard objects.

“Her lips are actually moving, but she’s not allowed to be heard.”
The phrase ‘be careful what you wish for’ springs to mind.
What exactly has Palin said that shows her amazing grasp of economics?
Hey, how about this?
“But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy. Um, helping, oh, it’s got to be about job creation, too. Shoring up our economy, and putting it back on the right track. So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions, and tax relief for Americans, and trade — we have got to see trade as opportunity, not as, uh, competitive, um, scary thing, but one in five jobs created in the trade sector today. We’ve got to look at that as more opportunity. All of those things under the umbrella of job creation.”
Yes… I think the Obama campaign did Palin a favor by NOT ‘allowing her to be heard’ in this ad!

Posted by: Aengil | October 29, 2008, 8:35 pm 8:35 pm

So, every picture of Obama in a McCain ad is racist? These ads show a black man, after all, and McCain says he’s no good.
Luckily there’ll be an end to all this BS soon.

Women will unite on November 4.
We can see through the corruption and sexism of the Obama campaign.

The most agressive and almost fatal form of sexism in the whole race have been Palin’s answers to Katie Couric’s question.
There were a HUGE blow to the majority’s wish to see more women in power.

Posted by: Common Sense | October 29, 2008, 8:39 pm 8:39 pm

I’m sorry, am I missing something here. Has reason flown completely out the window? These women are criticizing Barack Obama for something that Sarah Palin did herself?
Where were they when she winked her way through the VP debate? Did they say anything about her performance? Where were they when right-wing pundits and columnists slobbered all over themselves and humiliated themselves with their heavy breathing over her – where was their outrage and howls of casting her as a sex object?
Do they have nothing to say about John McCain and friends dressing her up like a paper doll come to life in her fancy new clothes – what she wasn’t presentable enough for them?
Are you kidding me? I’m sorry – I’m a woman but these people are beyond the pale. They just are. I guess it’s OK to accuse Sen Obama of everything under the sun – practically accusing him of treason – and they are in a lather because he uses clips of Gov Palin winking?
If this is how a lot of women in this country are going to react – I have two words for them: GROW UP!! You cannot demand to be treated equally and then howl when you are subjected to the same treatment that men are. That is hipocrisy at its worst!!!

Posted by: Liz | October 29, 2008, 8:40 pm 8:40 pm

No male candidate would be taken seriously if he was winking at the camera.
If we are to treat her fairly, then she should be held to the same standards.
Palin is a joke. We know it. The world knows it. And even many in her own party are saying it.
If she wants to do nothing but make unsubstantiated accusations, certainly it’s fine to call her out.
But I guess it’s somehow Obama’s fault she’s made an ass of herself on national TV multiple times.

Posted by: Equality for Palin | October 29, 2008, 8:41 pm 8:41 pm

Obama supporters, particularly women, will get paid back when he doesn’t live up to his hype. Women who attack Sarah Palin like this must have a serious lack of self respect. mary ann 8:24:00-whatever you are unhappy about, Obama isn’t going to fix it.

Posted by: RL in Illinois | October 29, 2008, 8:43 pm 8:43 pm

Give me a break. She winked. She mocks people who have an education and are interested enough in the world around them to want to travel. She is trying to portray herself as a simple person, so how is it sexist to acknowledge how successful she has been at it?

Posted by: mila | October 29, 2008, 8:44 pm 8:44 pm

This ad is sexist?
So what do “these women” think about the McCain top advisers who recently called her “a diva” and “a whack job”???

Bottom line: John McCain was sexist in his VP pick.

emma, how sexist is THAT to say “women will unite on November 4″? Gee, must have missed the VaginaAmerican memo, I’ve already voted for Obama, despite his lack of female plumbing.

Posted by: mila | October 29, 2008, 8:48 pm 8:48 pm

Hahahaha.
I think this is the best ad of the campiagn!
I almost fell off my chair laughing.
Palin was the one playing winky winky with the cameras to use that good ol’ gosh darn it charm.
Is there a problem with it now?
Out of all the brilliant women in our nation from which to chose, THIS is the best the GOP could find? As a woman, I was completely insulted when McCain picked her.
The very choice of Plain was blatently sexist. She wasn’t chosen based on her knowledge or ability. (Even Karl Rove said that) She was chosen because she was a woman. THAT is sexist!

Posted by: Rachel in NC | October 29, 2008, 8:48 pm 8:48 pm

Palin did what was called a “sexy wink”. If SHE did not have a problem with doing it why should anyone else? When you come into the “ring”- male or female you have to be able to take a hit. It is what we women say we want–equal treatment–so which is it going to be??

Posted by: Uvgotta B. Kidding | October 29, 2008, 8:52 pm 8:52 pm

Palin loves to use her sarcastic insults to attack Obama.
But it’s so sexist to play the same game? What, are we to assume they think women are too fragile for political hardball?
I LOVE THIS AD!!!
And the poetic justice that the lowly “community organizer” that Plain made fun of is kicking her’s and McCain’s butts because of his superior organizational skills is AWESOME!

Posted by: Oh, the Irony | October 29, 2008, 8:53 pm 8:53 pm

LJ, just what are a “real feminist” and “feminist values”? This campaign debate seems to have redefined feminism as a very liberal cause. Why can’t the Feminist Movement have room for all women? Gov Palin has achieved a great deal. While she doesn’t support all of the same policies you do, can’t she be a feminist too, or doesn’t she qualify?

Posted by: GI Jane | October 29, 2008, 8:56 pm 8:56 pm

LOL, this ad is in now way sexist. Sarah Palin winking multiple times during a national debate was not only unprofessional it was inappropriate. As a woman I was insulted by her winking and talking so “folksey” after claiming at the Rep convention to be breaking the glass ceiling.

Posted by: Leigh | October 29, 2008, 8:59 pm 8:59 pm

When all you have to run on is nothing, you accuse your opponent of something, while you still have an audience.
What this atavistic whack job of a politician with the brain of an Alaskan Jellyfish seems to presume is that the people who come to her rallies cannot think for themselves, hence will believe anything.
True, those who flock to her rallies, those who fall easily for Republican disinformation, are of kin mind and identity and cannot fathom the simple fact that our world has since moved on.

Please! The ad is a referendum on McCain’s economics prowess and his judgment in selecting a capable running mate that in theory should have rounded out his area of weakness. It is McCain’s words, properly sited. The Palin clip is available everywhere. Her wink, I stress HER wink, has become her trademark personal nuance, noted by many and spoofed on SNL. Her wink is her gesture, and you as a voter get to make up your own story of what you think it means. This ad does not attack Palin in the least, it simply jars the public to consider her ability! As a former Hilary supporter myself, I feel I can say, GROW UP!

Posted by: Debbie, Columbia, SC | October 29, 2008, 9:08 pm 9:08 pm

It is not sexist to criticize a woman who deserves criticism. Palin certainly does; she is unqualified for the high office that she seeks.
But is IS sexism to refrain from criticizing a woman because of her sex — or to object to valid criticism of a woman simply because of her sex. And it was sexist of John McCain to have chosen Palin so obviously and cynically because of her sex.

Posted by: Kate | October 29, 2008, 9:10 pm 9:10 pm

It’s really disturbing to read personal attacks on Sarah Palin not because she’s not qualified but because women can’t see her as Vice POTUS. Yet Obama gets a pass even though his national experience is nil. He’s vying for the top position. Where is the criticism? He kept silent while his gang lied and savaged Senator Clinton. Where has all the progress gone?

Posted by: Vivi | October 29, 2008, 9:11 pm 9:11 pm

McCain, select her why???
Because she is a genius?, Because she’s smart?, because she is an expert in foreign policy?. NO.
McCain made his choice based in her sex.
He tried to get the female vote from Hillary’s supporters.
She is an ignorant person, and the result of blind ambition. She is a Diva without loyalty, she just run for herself.
If somebody complains about this wink, please send your memo to the GOP.

Posted by: Mike | October 29, 2008, 9:18 pm 9:18 pm

Since when did Republicans become so concerned about women’s rights to label anything from Obama as “sexist”. Last time I heard the GOP platform condemned a woman’s right to choose. Sexism from the Republicans? You betcha. Hypocrisy from Republicans? Double you betcha!

Posted by: buzziea | October 29, 2008, 9:20 pm 9:20 pm

In my view, men and women are equal and both have a place at the discussion table. It’s called mutual respect.
Obama discussed running for the Presidency with his wife before they mutually decided to go for it. Togetherness and mutual respect for each other’s opinions.
Contrast that with McCain’s view of how women should be kept speechless from the media.
McCain said on Larry King that “Sarah will drag him up there” to begin drilling in Anwar. Cindy McCain bragged that she adopted a baby w/o first discussing it with him.
Do these Republican women McCain surrounds himself with think that men are sub-human? Strange lot, if so.

Posted by: dvine | October 29, 2008, 9:30 pm 9:30 pm

Vivi,
Personally, I can’t see her as Vice President BECAUSE she is not qualified.
It has zero, zilch, nada to do with her being female! Do you read? Look at how many Republicans that know of her strengths and of her limitations have spoken out themselves and said she is not qualified, and over her head.
Sarah Palin was selected for two strategic reasons: 1. to rally the Evangelical base (26.3% of the total US population) of the Republican party and 2. to draw some of the Clinton supporters, who were beyond reconciliation, opposed to Obama after the primary. She was NOT selected for her breadth of knowledge and experience. McCain staff has said she was a challenge to get up to speed. Do you even remember how many weeks she was sequestered away before being cautiously rolled out to the public?
There is no doubt that Sarah Palin is a skilled politician, but that does not make her a skilled leader!

I feel sorry for men because EVERY woman in the world has -at onetime- used her femininity for gain (and then they cry foul when it backfires).
Ladies, let it go. No one forced her to act like that, (several times).
I was a little embarrassed for her myself. I thought, “is that all she’s got”?

Posted by: WeAllDoIt | October 29, 2008, 9:40 pm 9:40 pm

I was totally insulted when she winked at the camera during the debates. As a successful woman in corporate america, I struggle daily to be taken seriously and must prove my abilities to men with half the skills I possess. Palin set us all back by not taking the position she was given seriously and proving that a woman deserved to be there! I was on the fence but can’t see supporting someone that does not deliver on the promise that women of the US are capable of delivering. I wouldn’t have a job if I turned to my boss and winked at him while explaining why I over spent my regional budget!

Posted by: jonesla | October 29, 2008, 9:41 pm 9:41 pm

In 2012 we’ll have “Obama the Robot” versus “Palin the Winker”.

Posted by: whitney | October 29, 2008, 9:43 pm 9:43 pm

As a woman who seeks equality for women, I do not see Sarah Palin remotely representing the values that feminists espouse. The ‘wink’ was brought into public view by Palin’s “cutsy” behaviour in what is supposed to be a serious political debate. From that moment, Palin defined as herself as little more than someone who aims to get votes through her overt flirtatiousness and looks rather than her brains. Feminists everywhere are appalled. If this is not the image Palin (and, de facto, her supporters) wants to depict , then she only has herself to blame for providing the fodder for ridicule. The ad is definitely not being sexist – it is merely holding up a “mirror” for Americans to reflect *seriously* on what/who might be representing them in international forums and at home, and who might end up steering Americans’ futures – both women’s and men’s! Credibility at home and abroad …?

Posted by: LDLG | October 29, 2008, 9:48 pm 9:48 pm

To jonesla: I agree with your point. I have been hot and cold on Palin throughout and I am definitely not a fan of the winking. But I think she herself has realized that the flirting and the winking was not appropriate and I have noticed that she is changing her tune (perhaps in an effort to lay the groundwork for 2012). I think what she has done in Alaska is phenomenal and it is a shame that she is not given more credit for what she has accomplished. I hope she can turn her image around and will be a serious candidate in 2012.

These women take any criticism of another woman as sexist. It’s ridiculous. If anything, they’re being sexist by supporting and defending this Palin. Palin is unqualified and undignified to be VP or President. I don’t know how these woman could have be Hillary supporters and then turn to Palin. It’s an insult to Hillary.

Posted by: Sandy | October 29, 2008, 9:51 pm 9:51 pm

Posted by: ginny | October 29, 2008, 10:01 pm 10:01 pm

Finally, some women are starting to understand how stupid women are being too each other. While the blame for the disgusting treatment of Sarah Palin by the Obama campaign is a disgrace and should be squarely set on the candidate, this kind of misogynistic behavior on the part of his campaign must also be blamed on his female advisors including Claire McCaskill, Katherine Sebelius, and the other Democratic Party women, including Hillary Clinton, herself the victim of sexism who don’t stand up for other women against sexist attacks. But “The Egg Wars” continue — that is women trashing each other for political gain, partisan politics trumping the more important, the unified voice of all women who if they were smart would realize that ideological difference must be put aside for a greater purpose, getting women into powerful positions. But women such as McCaskill and Sebelius and the others either aren’t intelligent enough to see the bigger picture, are too self-oriented, or have become numb to the subtleties of sexism.

Posted by: Halli Casser-Jayne | October 29, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

This ad is not sexist.
There are 3 quotes from McCain and then the viewer is asked to tnink about his choice of VP. What is sexist about that?
Palin is being called out on her ignorance and stupidity, not her gender.
She is going for a high-powered job – tough if you truly wimpy women think that your gender gets you an easy ride.

He could have chosen Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson or Senator Susan Collins to name two.
If he had chosen one of these experienced, intelligent women, this would not even be an issue. These women have respect because of the qualities and years of work. They are presidential material. They have respect.
Instead, McCain thought with his hormones instead of his brain and chose young and ignorant over wise and experienced.

Hillary Clinton was an exceptional candidate, but the primary is OVER, and some people can’t let it go. They will forever find fault in the candidate who surpassed her, regardless of his honor and integrity and fitness to be our leader. Do they care that they have been manipulated? That they are playing right into the Republican’s game plan by embracing the token female on the ticket; someone who doesn’t have a 10th of Hillary’s ability? Their defense of Palin must be deeply disappointing to Hillary herself.
Palin is snide and sarcastic, has made multiple vile, unjustifed and false attacks against Obama, has abused her power in office, has greatly exagerated her executive experience (how hard is it to be mayor of a town of 6000, especially when you hire a city manager to actually DO the work? And how hard is it to govern a state with the highest federal support per capita and millions of dollars in excess oil revenues which are then distributed to the residents, which, by the way, is called “spreading the wealth?) has supported the innapropriate behavior of her spouse (as an “advisor” to the governor and as an Alaskan secessionist), has made blatantly false claims about pursuit and then refusal of government earmarks – OVER and OVER and OVER again, continues to spew lies days and weeks after they have been debunked, seeks pity for her role as mother of a special needs child when, if elected to the vice presidency, a nanny will certainly be raising it (and by the way, does that child ever MOVE? For all we can see, they are parading around a stuffed doll). I could go on, but….suffice it to say, that it is a great tragedy that Hillary got so close to breaking through the glass ceiling, and there are still women in this country who would be content to let this “barbie doll” make the final push through it. I’ve been an Obama supporter from day one, but I admire Ms. Clinton a great deal and hope he chooses her for his cabinet. Hillary for Secretary of Health and Human Services!!!!

Palin is the most popular governor in the United States, a politician who rooted out corruption in her own party and defeated two former governors to even get the job. Clean government and balanced budgets… good stuff!
And people then say that McCain chose her because she is “sexy”. No man with this resume would be treated like this. Never.
If she isn’t ready for the VP, in what way is Obama ready \ qualified for the actual Presidency?

As a woman, I resent other women who make these crazy accusations of sexism in cases where there is no sexism. It just makes the rest of us women look bad. As far as I’m concerned, Sarah Palin is the one who made herself look like an unserious candidate with that flirtatious winking and fake folksy language.
Palin doesn’t hold a candle to Hillary Clinton. I supported Obama over Clinton in the primaries, but I always believed that Clinton was a very serious candidate who showed brains and strength. She even out-performed Obama in most of the debates. Clinton is a woman I look up to. Palin is a woman who makes me ill.
Another reason I have very little respect for Palin is the way she leads her family. Her oldest son is a high school drop-out. Her oldest daughter has missed much of the past year of high school and is having a baby soon. Palin went back to work when her last two babies were only 3 days old. Clearly, her only priority is her own political ambition.

I can not believe that any of you truly believe that this campaign has not been riddled with sexism. The entire country is so afraid of saying or doing anything that would be considered racism. But they surly do not mind all the comments and depictions of Ms. Palin in a sexist manor. I will give you an example. The picture that was plastered all over the place of her legs with the man staring up at her. Would we do that with a man. Heck no! The cartoons of her with her assets hanging out, haven’t seen any of Mr. Obama with his pecks exposed. This is the biggest display of sexism, and I can not believe that the women of America do not rise up and scream out in one united voice, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! Get down to the issues.

Hillary Clinton is one of the most hated people in American politics. It has nothing to do with the fact that she is a woman. It has everything to with her arrogance that she is always right and that everyone else is always wrong. The only reason she won New Hampshire was that she finally showed a few seconds of actual humanity which never made another appearance during her campaign.
Sarah Palin has become another of the most hated politicians in America. This also has nothing to do with the fact that she is a woman. The reason for this is that she combines all of the meanness of Cheney with all of the stupidity of Bush. It also doesn’t help that she is a crook and a liar.
From Wikipedia, “A wink is a kind of semi-formal communication, which usually indicates shared, unspoken knowledge.” Palin’s winks during the debate showed that she was lying through her teeth, but that it was ok because she really didn’t mean what she was saying.

Some obama supporters can’t really be so hateful. I’ll just continue to assume that you are actually good people that have just been so brainwashed that you don’t have a clue as to the hate you spew. I’d tell you to think for yourselves, but you are so wrapped up in that one that you have lost the ability to think for yourselves.
SAD. Can’t believe the media has played such a role in allowing the brainwashing to take place.

Mildly sexist. But sexist or not, it definitely was a cheap shot.
If you think Palin is a bad choice as an economic advisor to McCain then why not state her positions rather than capture an inconsequential affectation? Palin has spoken pretty extensively about the wisdom of cutting rather than raising taxes, about cleaning up wall st. and DC, about the economic benefits of developing our own energy sources (to say nothing of the geopolitic advantages).
I’ll put Palin’s economic positions up against Obama’s and Biden’s any day. And maybe that’s exactly why they needed to resort to a cheap shot to try to get at her.

Unbelievable. As a Democrat in support of equal rights for women, I am appalled at this clear sexism. No doubt, I would cry foul if John McCain had pulled something like this out of his bag of tricks, had Hilary (or Pelosi or any other woman for that matter) been the nominee. Barak…you should be ashamed of yourself. Pull the ad. It doesn’t stand for what we believe in and it slides our campaign down into the mud with the other side.

They spend hours and hours pouring over negetive footage to use, stick to issues. I can’t believe we would decide the fate of our country based on appearences rather than issues. No wonder the whole world is laughing….but as they say, a wink is as good as a nod.

I find the Obama ads to be quite deceptive (using fact check-who agree they are deceptive) This ad is, I agree, sexist and seems to be making fun of Palin. These two jackals Obama/Biden are two of the most obnoxious arrogant people – Biden is just “so smart” he is stupid covering it up with his arrogance. Obama is an empty suit who has great oratory skills, no substance – I wonder if he has realized he will have no teleprompter in the WH should he win this election (and it is NOT OVER until the fat lady sings!) President tweedle dee and VP tweedle dumb ass.

sarah palin has been ravaged by the media,
hollywood and the sexists that populate the democrat party. what you liberals don’t understand is that having another
point of view does not mean you’re to be
silenced and made out to be a criminal.
and most of all if someone else has a
view that you don’t have you don’t have
to get defensive. the biggest difference
between a liberal and a conservative is
that a liberal will put down or try and
silence someone who has a different op-
inion, while a conservative will let a
person with another view talk all they
want. liberals can never win in the
arena of ideas so they try and supress
an oppossing view. grow up liberals.
we conservatives won’t go on a suicide

if obama does.

To Larry W,
Sure, no politician keeps 90%+ approval ratings for long. The fact remains that Palin is talented, capable, and accomplished. It has nothing to do with anyone being “infactuated”. She has not been treated fairly, not by a long shot. You believe that this is okay because you disagree with her politically. Or perhaps because she had the temerity to get in the way of Obama’s coronation. (Just like that prole Joe Wurzelbacher.)
Care to list Obama’s accomplishments then if your eyes, ears, and mind are closed to Palin’s? Or are you just “infactuated” with him as I apparently am with her?

Posted by: Joseph | October 29, 2008, 11:35 pm 11:35 pm

Posted by: willy39 | October 29, 2008, 11:37 pm 11:37 pm

Harrett, Obama can answer basic questions on domestic and foreign policy issues. Palin cannot. That is what makes her unqualified, while Obama is qualified.
I agree with Lori. I don’t like a lot of the sexism Palin has been subjected to, particularly the “MILF” bumper stickers, but she did wink on her own, so it is fair game.

Posted by: Katherine | October 29, 2008, 11:37 pm 11:37 pm

I am a rather staunch McCain/Palin supporter, however I think screaming “sexism” about this commercial is about as ridiculous as screaming “racism” any time Barack Obama is criticized. I think the crying wolf about racism actually helps the Republicans, and I wish others in my party would not turn around and give the Democrats a leg up by crying foul over something like this.
On another note, when you have one party constantly comparing their presidential candidate’s credentials to the VP candidate of the other party, isn’t that an indication of an upside down ticket? I love watching the Dems compare Governor Palin and Senator Obama. I don’t think they realize how poorly this reflects on their candidate.

The Obama camp and its supporters are quick to cry “Racism!” at the drop of a hat but in this campaign, ageism and sexism are completely allowed, tolerated and even encouraged. It’s a double standard and it is sickening.
“These women,” to use the term the article does, are right that it was done to Sen. Clinton and now it’s being done to Gov. Palin. How frequently did Obama supporters refer to Sen. Clinton as “that woman” or “that witch,” or worse? Those are the same epithets now routinely used for Gov. Palin.

If you believe that you can fake folksy, see Kerry 2004. And if you really don’t know what it means to wink, maybe we’d all be better off if you stayed away from the polls, the one group who shouldn’t be voting is the “dumb” demographic.

While the ad itself is ridiculous – Palin has far more economic and administrative experience than Madonna/Obama – it has become a bit tiresome this habit of being “offended” by everything. The Dem ticket has been the greatest proponent of this tactic, with their “code words” and other invented “racist” accusations. Now McCain is jumping on the bandwagon (but… just as he did with Rev Wright, ignoring the unmistakable agism of the Obama campaign.

Part of the agreement made by Oil and the state of Alaska when they opened the reserve was to take a tax on their profits. That revenue was not put in general revenue to spend in all the other states. Instead the state government divides the revenue and send each man woman and child an equal portion of the revenue. That was decided before Palin was in high school. Linda I guess you raised your children so well they will never make a mistake. Suppose the GOP made an ad featuring Obama and Michelle Obama using Black gestures and Black accents/grammar. That would be denounced as racist — on the grounds that among their own culture, such behavior does not indicate lack of intelligence.
It is the same here. Among women, winking and other gestures are okay.
Palin is obviously very smart; her record of success in Alaska proves it: she dealt well with the details of negotiations with the oil companies, fiscal reform, and the agreement with Canada on the pipeline.
It’s very dishonest and nasty to suggest there is anything wrong with Palin’s intelligence. This is an example of ‘swiftboating’ — trying to deny a person’s strength, as was done to Gore and Kerry.
Obama is the one who doesn’t do details, he just gets passed from one political machine to another, a token dummy.

Winking has become Palin’s trademark. Just watch any of her stump speeches or the VP debate and you will see her winking up a storm. So, how one comes up with the idea that using a clip of her winking is somehow ‘sexist’ is beyond me. And as for showing her speaking without the audio – that was artistic license on the part of the video director. However, the director most likely decided to not have her speaking in the video because all that comes out of her mouth is shrieking dribble.

Who has ever heard of Shelley Mandell and why do we care what she says or thinks?
Sarah Palin has executive experience? 25% of her hires as Governor were from Wasilla High. She copied her husband on executive emails. She redid her tiny office in Wasilla for $50,000. She is still under ethics investigation – and another one is underway on the pipeline. But one thing I can say, she sure did spread the wealth: “we’re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it’s collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs.” Sarah Palin, 2008

Palin’s work in Alaska earned very high approval from both parties, including 75% of Democrats. Early this year it was 82%, and again 82% after she was nominated for VP. Then the Obama camp and the national media began trashing her and some Alaska Democrats began polling against her — bringing her rating down to 68% — same as Bill Clinton’s!

Sarah Palin may be a sweetheart of a woman in her personal life but unfortunatley for her when it comes to this campaign she’s an idiot and I seriously worry about the people who think she is the best thing since sling backs and could seriously possibly run this country??? It makes me break out in a sweat just thinking about it!!! Every time she opens her mouth she makes me quite literally cringe and I must immediately mute my TV. She needs to go back into Alaska obscurity where she came from and take care of her kids, shut her winey mouth and leave politics alone. If the people of this country are stupid enough to vote for the McCain/Palin duo then they will be in for even more misery just like all those same idiots who re-elected Bush!!! I’m not voting for Obama either by the way….neither one will do a damn thing but make this bad situation we are in worse. ALL POLITICANS ARE LIARS, DON’T YOU PEOPLE GET IT YET????? And just remember when you do visit the polls, it’s not the President who really runs this country anyway…he is just a figure-head…where we really need new blood and CHANGE is in the senate AND the congress before we will EVER see anything good happen for this country again.

As another commenter pointed out, a wink conveys “silent, unspoken knowledge.” It was no coincidence that footage of Sarah Palin winking at the convention, saying to the base, “I know who you are and what we are up against,” directly followed John McCain’s own quote that he would maybe rely on his VP for economic advice. The Obama campaign using “that wink” which so rankled with them, while Palin’s lips are moving but she is given no quote or sound, implies dishonesty and objectification, as if to say that “Caribou Barbie is bad with money.” The attention to her wardrobe, accusing her of being a “shopaholic” said the same. It is disgusting, and I caught on to it from the Obama campaign very early on.

Now I am hearing that her medical report is missing. Give me a break. You are just trying to cause trouble. I know I heard some complaints about that winking. People did not like it, so she should stop. She is dumb. Chelsea is smarter than her. She has to have things drilled into her. SNL made her look like the fool that she is. She is a liar. I am registered independent and have never voted republican in my life, but this year I voted block republican. I believe that President McCain will surround himself with people of integrity, and Obama will continue to surround himself with something different. And the disgusting partisanship and hypocrisy that Nancy Pelosi and Barney Frank have displayed this past month illustrate how important it is that we have a balanced government. A radical liberal government won’t be any better than a radical conservative government. I do believe that the choices of mentors and alignments that Obama has chosen over the years plainly show that he has an agenda that is not good for our country. McCain is a man of integrity, with a REAL track record of bi-partisanship. So again, join me in moving our government toward a balanced center. Don’t let the 600 million dollar man and the perverse media down your back and tell you it’s raining.

Dave don’t fool yourself. Mccain is not an honorable man. If he were he wouldn’t do the negative campaign robocalls. You are aware that sometimes kids picked up on those calls. The flyers and the tv ad are awful also. He was also involved in an accident that may have caused someone some harm. And HE has done plenty wrong, the news media doesn’t drill it in our minds like robots.

Posted by: lwilkerson | October 30, 2008, 12:56 am 12:56 am

lwilkerson, how can you cite McCain dishonesty for making robocalls, when Obama had the gall to break his public funding promise when he saw it was to his advantage? McCain kept his word, and he is fighting 600+ million dollars with 83 million dollars. You’re damned right he has to make robocalls.. Perhaps you think that the honorable thing is for Obama to just write McCain a few hundred million dollar check for him to cede the race? As of today, we still live in a democratic society(no thanks to the democrats as of late!) And I’m far more concerned about my children getting programmed by leftist Obama disciples in our schools than I am of them picking up a vote for McCain robocall. Again, calling all proud Americans, join me in a republican block vote for a balanced democratic government!

If you want to treat women as equals you have to accept that some women aren’t up to their projected job – the distance between HRC and Palin is so wide I can’t understand the analogy. Just because you’re a women doesn’t protect against being ignorant, and it’s hardly sexist to notice.

NOW supports Palin who is a product of McCain’s bad judgement. In LA, where I live, many women were in shock and disbelief when the LA chapter of NOW announced their endorsement.
Palin doesn’t support a woman’s right to an abortion under any circumstances. She would forces victims of incest and rape to carry the child conceived out of the deplorable acts to full term.
She does not support equal pay for women.
NOW is over. They have lost their credibility as a women’s rights organization …all for naught, all because of Mrs Winky, Palin.
What a joke.

1. McCain repeatedly opposed bills to fight and prevent domestic violence, including the landmark Violence Against Women Act.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A new ethics complaint has been filed against Sarah Palin, accusing the Alaska governor of abusing her power by charging the state when her children traveled with her.
The complaint alleges that the Republican vice presidential nominee used her official position as governor for personal gain, violating a statute of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act. It follows a report by The Associated Press last week that Palin charged the state more than $21,000 for her three daughters’ commercial flights, including events where they weren’t invited, and later ordered their expense forms amended to specify official state business.
In some cases, Palin also has charged the state for hotel rooms for the girls.

If you check the dollars paid to the Obama women on his campaign you will find that they are paid less than their male counterparts.
John McCain pays his female staffers $6,000 more than their male counterparts, sweetie.
Senator Obama did not come out and demand an apology from Ludracris for calling Senator Clinton a bitch in his rap song.
Obama did not take exception with the way that Phleger referred to Senator Clinton in his sermon at United Church of Christ.
We know nothing about his years at Occidental College, Columbia or Harvard.
Yet, Senator Clinton was vetted over and over and over again. When she tried to express her concerns with him just giving a speech and referring to his aligning with Rezcko, she was booed.
She could not get a break. Chris Matthews had a thrill up his leg and stated that Sen. Clinton would not be where she is, if she had not been first lady.
The Obama campaign is very sexist. Even Pelosi had the temerity to ask Sen. Clinton to hang it up. But, Sen. Clinton understands what it takes to be a winner and respects those folks that Obama says hang on to their guns, and religion.
He is elitist and a pseudo-intellectual. Just look at the lobster dinner with the Iranian caviar. Yes, he is a man of the people.

The tone of these multiple responses from Obama cheerleaders (how many of whom are paid by he campaign?) illustrates the terror “the one” experiences at Gov. Palin’s success. After all, she has accomplished real things, while he has done nothing but talk – his whole life. She has exercised executive responsibility in several significant positions. He has given speeches talking about what he might do when and if the opportunity arrives.
But she is an attractive woman, so, in the Democrat view, her accomplishments don’t count. The only thing that matters is who paid for the clothes she wore. As the catty ones noted, she, being the only middle class candidate in the last several elections, obviously could not have afforded them herself.
It doesn’t occur to them to ask which middle eastern potentate actually paid for Obama’s ego-fest this evening, We shall probably never know, since his campaign intentionally turned off all normal identity controls on contributions. We do know that “Adolf Hitler”, “Osama bin Laden” and “Mickey Mouse” did their bit.
Obama and his supporters animadvert over their deep concern for the middle class. But it’s not hard to see how the middle class feels. They appear in the tens of thousands at Palin rallies – not the pre-arranged, carefully orchestrated photo-ops of the well-heeled Obama appearances – but real rallies organized on short notice at available venues that often will not accommodate the crowds that appear. They stand in line, even in bad weather, and when they are turned away because the venues are full to overcrowding, they go onto websites and express their disappointment, but reiterate their support.
There is middle class American reality here the Obamabots cannot comprehend. And it is genuine support for an exceptional woman who has shown by her personal example that she cherishes human life and values real people.
Sarah Palin may not, ultimately, be on the winning side in this election (though the polls are tightening). But she deserves to win. And she has set an example that principled women everywhere will emulate. Barack Obama and his snarky, elitist supporters will answer to history for their insulting treatment of her.

Please remember Palin is listing her six years as mayor of a small town as executive experience. The Daily Show had a very funny investigative reporter interview the current mayor. The mayor’s office doesn’t run the fire dept or education. She listed a staff meeting one day and signing checks on Thursday as the highlight of the week. That mayor’s job is less stressful than most office managers’.
So take away that six years counting as executive experience and she has two years as a governor of a state that takes more than its fair share of federal money while it gives its citizens shares of oil tax revenue. This is hardly a situation that would be difficult to balance the budget. The pipeline she brags about is still in negotiation. She has been found guilty of abusing her power as governor in troopergate and now there is evidence she used state money to fly her kids and put them up in hotel rooms to the tune of and she billed the state for over 300 days of 19 months in office for staying in her own home instead of the governor’s mansion. She has repeatedly shown a complete lack of foreign policy experience.
As a woman, of course I would like to see a woman in the White House but not an unqualified woman. We’ve had an unqualified man in these last 8 years and look at the amount of damage that was done to our country.
Add it up people.

The funny thing is, Sarah Palin understand economics a heck of a lot better than the three men campaigning. Palin is the governor of a large state and manages its budget quite effectively, so much so that Alaskans are REALLY happy with her. Forget the MSM-Obama spin, Palin is no fool.
Obama thinks that wink signifies she’s ignorant; he’s the moron here. That wink coming after “his running mate” is essentially saying “don’t worry; I’ve got it covered!”
If you take an honest look at Governor Palin’s economic record as mayor and governor, you’ll see that she has.
So, who’s the fool?

Who cares about the perception of sexism in politics? Not me. If anything, the recent cries of sexism have shown that many (women) are not prepared and ready to be held by the same standards as men. John McCain and Barack Obama have been called every name in the book. Why? It’s politics. Low and behold you say something negative about a woman and it’s sexist? Maybe we (men) should take a long, hard look at women from “that” perspective. When we critique them we should view them in the same manner as a corporation chooses a female CEO. If you can’t hang with the fellas don’t try to……Pathetic.

Sarah Palin was born to modest means Without godfathers she has fought the establishment both within her party and in general elections.
I believe that this is what we teach our children TO AIM FOR THE STARS.
What do we have now the MEDIA, using against her the most sexist and unfair and untruthful old mantras.
They looked her up side down and could not find one instance when she was not honest.
Come on, her rating as Governor of Alaska is over 80% look at Nancy Pelosi she and her Congress have a rating of how much? …. an old time low.
It is elitist to look down at University Degrees that are not from the top Universities and very unfair because at the end of the day what counts is what people has achieved in life and not what University the went to.
I hope that every woman whatever her
party afiliaton is on November 4 will think by herself what is all about. What really counts and then cast its vote for a wonderful, brave woman.
A woman that through her political life has never funneld public money to pay for favors like someone we know has done it all the time.

Gail,
I am a woman and I am thoroughly insulted by Sarah Palin, and more so, by McCain’s choice. Look, even if she was inexperienced, if she at least possessed an intellectual curiosity to learn and consider other’s ideas, I would think that would not be so bad.
BUT, Palin does not. In her interviews she comes across as narrow-minded. She thinks the Arab-Israeli conflict is coloured in black and white, you can just put everyone in columns of “good” and “bad” guys. She mocks Obama for being a community organizer. McCain twists Biden’s gaffes out of proportion. She can’t bring herself to say an abortion-clinic bomber is a terrorist too.
If she wants to use her feminine wiles, fine, but don’t start crying sexism over lipstick on a pig.
This ad, I see, is more targeted at making voters think: What does this say about McCain’s judgement?
I do not support Sarah Palin. She is no Hillary Clinton, and in fact, it would be insulting to mention Hillary in same sentence as her.

There is no such thing as a Hillary supporter for McCain. Anyone who claims to be this fictional creature has always been a McCain supporter from day one. McCain and Sen Clinton have very different idealogies that cannot and would not be compromised.
The very reasons tht I am a Hillary supporter are the reasons (Pro-Choice stance on abortion, ending the war in Iraq, health care reform, against privatization of social security, commitment to the strengthening the middle class, education, supports environmental causes, supports federal funding for stem cell research and so much more) I cannot, would not EVER support John McCain and especially why I could not, would not EVER support Sarah Palin.

Those who whine the loudest about sexism at every little turn are in fact the ones who are not trying to fight for equality.
So they have to go “Boo-hoo! I look bad because people are making sexist attacks on me!” Such women are not suited for politics, then.
Whatever, Sarah. Grow a spine, that’s needed for the leader of the free world, in case you didn’t know.

I think that stupid “Disrespectful” ad that twists Joe Biden’s, the person who, wrote, drafted and got the Violence Against Women Act protecting women from domestic violence signed into law, words about Sarah Palin into sexist attacks are disgusting.

I thought Palin was totally inappropriate to wink – not once but multiple times – during her debate. I can’t imagine a professional woman doing that in a business meeting. Palin debased herself by doing that, and used it as a way to leverage her sexuality to appeal to men. (Remember that commentator who said he “sat up a little straighter” when she did that?) You can’t have it both ways – play the vixen then get angry when you’re called out for it…
Anyway, Palin is no expert on the economy. She lives in a state with a net surplus – they get money from oil as well as from earmarks (from our taxes). What does she know about dealing with all the issues faced at a national level? According to McCain staffers, not much.

Posted by: Nancy | October 30, 2008, 10:37 am 10:37 am

isn’t SHE the one who winked?? These women expect a different standard for female candidates and that is what is sexist.

Barack Obama did want to teach sex ed to children in grades K – 6. Google Illinois Senate Bill 99 and read the text yourself.
The bill’s main sponsor, Sen. Carol Ronen, was quoted saying, “It teaches students about the advantages of abstinence, while also giving them the realistic information they need about prevention of an unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.”

Obama and the DNC have made it clear how they feel about women – we’re all a bunch of “sweeties” to be led around by our ovaries.
On November 4th, I’ll remember how Obama gave Hillary the finger after his abyssmal performance in the Pennsylvania debate – and I’ll return the gesture to him by voting for McCain.

It is a wonderful thing that I do not watch television so I get to miss all of the stupid political ads and must rely on my own intellect to research and make up my own mind about crucial events such a voting. You need to make up your own minds based on critical thinking. If Sarah wants to wink, let her. Big Deal! I find Obama’s and Biden’s smirking smiles more offensive, because they are telling everyone they think they are superior to us when they smirk. By the way, I am a Catholic woman with a husband and children and grandchildren who just happens to love most everything about what Sarah brings to the polital platform. We work hard, we expect our politician’s to do the same for us while not wanting to take anything away from us.

She winked five times during the debate…a debate that could be described as her job interview for the second most important job on earth.
It was so incredibly inappropriate.
Why can’t that be shown?
It seems to me these women need to step back and stop protecting the “little lady”. Sarah can take care of herself.
If Joe Biden had picked his nose that would be all over the web, LOL

I have had it with Republicans enticing hate and anger and causing violent incidents all over America now. I am tired of Republicans enticing so much rage McCain-Palin supporters are attacking Obama supporters. People Republicans are walking a dangerous line and they don’t care who gets hurt. Sarah Palin puts Alaska’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports online, so you can see exactly how she runs the budget. She was responsible for the surplus and $5 billion savings over the last two years, and she also sent $1200 dividend checks to her constituents from the tax (a severance tax on drilling) she imposed.
The AP reported Palin’s government in 2007 asked for 31 earmarks totaling $198 million, down from the $550 million in earmarks the state asked for the previous year. Palin has used her line-item veto to cut funds for special interest programs called earmarks.
She knows how to run an economy, since the Alaskan budget is around $12 billion, and the state provides 14% of our domestic oil supply. She manages a staff of 26,000 employees, and she is CINC of the Alaskan National Guard.

Posted by: Barb | October 30, 2008, 11:26 am 11:26 am

1) Obama/Biden have been much more respectful to Palin than Palin has been to them. Palin throws cheap shots every day at Obama. Obama and Biden throw a cheap shot her way a couple times a month. There’s no comparison.
(2)when Palin decided to do all that winking in a VP debate, it came off as flirtatious and cutesy, like she was trying to be adorable. If she wants to be taken seriously, she should act more serious.
(3) as for the ad being sexist, I promise you that if McCain had gone through a debate with countless winks and “youbetchas” and the like, the Dems would have put that in an ad, too, because it would underscore that McCain was being cutesy and trivializing the gravity of the hard times we are in. Also, you can’t have it both ways… if you think it was sexist for Obama to show footage of Palin winking, then it was ten times as sexist for Palin to decide to wink ten times in the debate.

Aren’t you just a little bit relieved that the Obama campaign didn’t include an excerpt of Gov. Palin actually speaking?
They could have used the Couric interview clip of Gov. Palin’s strange and incoherent response to the economic bail out question. Perhaps their better angels prevailed.

So you think someone with her educational background has the academic foundation necessary to navigate probably the most complex financial period in the U.S. since the Great Depression? Tell me (and the rest of us) how exactly does the ability to work a simple “balance sheet” equate to understanding world markets, equity/debt instruments, etc.
I ask because it seems the GOP tends to “dumb down” the skill set required when we have Nobel Prize winners who find it challenging. But wait…Sarah Palin with a B.A. in Journalism gets it.

I have never heard a bigger load of….nonsense.
I thought the commercial was funny. These comments are nothing but pent up regret of these women at having their primary candidate lose.
There was nothing sexist about the ad. A wink is a common non-verbal signal to express that you’re joking. In the context of the commercial it is clear that that was the intended meaning of its usage. The fact that Sarah Palin is a woman was completely irrelevant to the message.
And these complaints have no merit because Sarah Palin is clearly unqualified for the position of Vice President. Numerous Republican leaders and commentators have come to this same conclusion. The female Republican State Senate leader in Alaska has even declared her unqualied to be Governor of Alaska. Which is true.
As Mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin had no responsibilities for running any social services or emergency services. She increased spending dramatically as Mayor and left her city deep in debt and facing some very expensive legal liabilities that were solely due to her mis-judgement.
She later was appointed to the Alaska Oil and Gas Commision without having any experience in the industy. She served less than a year.
As Governor she has served less than 2 years and has already faced 3 major ethics complaints. The first of those so far investigated for has already shown her in violation of Alaska law. Among her stated “accomplishments” is a $500 million taxpayer giveaway to a CANADIAN company, which the company can receive most of without actually BUILDING a pipeline. Great work if you can get it.
Not only do American’s agree that Sarah Palin is not ready for Vice-President, polls show that more Americans view her negatively than those who view her positively.
I think Ken Adelman says it best about McCain and Palin:
McCain’s temperament — leading him to bizarre behavior during the week the economic crisis broke — and his judgment — leading him to Wasilla — depressed me into thinking that “our guy” would be a(nother) lousy conservative president. Been there, done that.

Posted by: Bud | October 30, 2008, 1:34 pm 1:34 pm

Has anyone noticed just how many of the posts are against Palin? Just curious how soooo many are soooo against one person. Please be honest and admit that you hate her, not because she’s such an awful candidate, but because she isn’t on your side of the aisle. If you took the “Republican” sign off her and put on one that said “Democrat” she could do no wrong.
This may not be sexism but let’s not forget the egalitarianism that is so blatantly displayed by nearly every person above. Hypocrites, every one of you would say you want someone “real” if asked in a poll apart from this election. This is what someone real is like. Obama, Biden, and even McCain are the fakers.
Admit you prefer the lie to the truth because it makes you feel superior.

I have decided I no longer want any part of the Democratic party that I have been a part of for my entire life, and I’m 70 years old.
The comments here say a lot more about the Democratic mind set than the Obama Ads, which are all full of lies or at the very least half truths.
Whine on ladies, you want equality but when you actually start to getit you can’t handle it.
Sarah Palin is the best things that have happened to us, she is a breath of fresh air.
To say she doesn’t know anything about economics, and yet to believe that Obama who is part of the Chicago machine, who has never ran a business, or a state knows about economics.
Sarah has more experience than he has in every aspect of government.
She isn’t a Senator, she is a Governor, she can appoint Senators if a vacancy becomes available.
So go ahead ladies, you have a right to be stupid, after all the constitution is there for all of us.

In truth, Obama has several hundred (volunteers and paid) people that constantly browse the major sites such as Fox, CBS, ABC, Politico, etc and especially the articles linked in the Drudge Report and then immediately post dribble that claim to be a Republican who just happens to be voting for (the most liberal member of Congress) Obama. Or they post messages to belittle the article and anyone that is DUMB ENOUGH to believe it. This is the ugliest form of free speech. Politics is a dirty arena and as you can see from this and nearly every other post, there are plenty of pigs willing to get into the mud and fight dirty while blaming the other side of doing it. Obama is a creepy charlatan that has lied about so many things. The first several posts of most of the articles you will read that have comments are just a continuation of those lies. You have been informed. Do with it what you want, but facts are facts and this is what they are doing to you, the reader seeking truth.

Ceegh,
Here are some others to add to your list of Sarah Palin “haters.”
“I don’t believe she’s qualified to be President of the United States…”
“There is no question that this candidate (Sarah Palin) is arguably the thinnest-résumé candidate for Vice-President in the history of America.”
“There was a political party in this country called the Know-Nothings,” he continued. “And we’re getting on the fringe of that….”
Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE)
—-
“Nice lady, no experience. It’s so sad. She’s a gigantic drag,” said Chris DePino, a Republican consultant based in New Haven, Conn.
—-
Asked on Friday if McCain should have picked him over Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the guy all but said yes. “I think the dynamics would be different in Pennsylvania,” Tom Ridge explained. “I think we’d be foolish not to admit it publicly.” He added that McCain “had several good choices, and I was one of them.”

There is no doubt that the Obama ad is clearly misogynist and so sexist as to demand an apology, which it will not get. The Obama campaign has used the same ignominious woman hatred tactics to throw off the stage another more capable, stronger and qualified presidential candidate who was ridiculed and treated in a despicable manner by the Obama campaign’s sexist message!

Bud:
I’m assuming you are copy/pasting that list to somehow show how wrong my statements were. I don’t get how showing me a bunch of quotes from people I have no real interest in will do that, but just for fun:
First, Chuck Hagel, not exactly the biggest supporter of Republican issues, even if he calls himself one. Also not a particularly bright man on occasion. I’m pretty sure you like him because he’s against the war.
Second, Chris DePino… yeah, who? Wait, you mean someone somewhere could possibly not think she’s qualified enough even though they are a Republican! Who’da thunk it. (No one seems the least bit concerned about a man running for president that has equally “no experience”, but hey, he’s a man and a Democrat.)
Third, Ridge was talking about political positioning and not experience, personality, or qualification. He knows that if his name were on the ticket PA will fall the Republicans’ way because they would knee-jerk vote for the “hometown” man just like AZ does for McCain, IL for Obama, and DE for Biden. PA has a lot more electoral power than AK so Ridge figures it would help.
So what do all of those have to do with people going after Palin the way they are? Biden has made just as many gaffes (if not more.) Obama is equally as bad on the experience scale (worse since he’s running for president.) And nearly everyone here on this message board are representing themselves in a way Andrew Jackson would find revolting. You’ve made no point against it except a few Republicans didn’t think she was the best choice. Oh no!

Posted by: ceegh | October 30, 2008, 3:38 pm 3:38 pm

what’s wrong with her winking on a nationally televised debate??? Come on RC, the ex-republican voting for Obama… are you just so blinded by the lightbulbs surrounding Obama that you like to take part in the hatred of Sarah Palin? This woman has been in the spotlight for two months and the media has consistently bashed her. What does she do? She turns her head to the ugliness and ignores it. How is it sexist to show her doing exactly what she did? Barack Obama didn’t make up the wink. She winked several times because she thought it was charming and folksy. Well, it’s not. Any woman should be outraged that Sarah Palin thought she could wink her way into vice president. A woman that winked in a board room would be recognized for what she is – using sex appeal in the place of talent and innovation. That’s what Sarah Palin is. Sex appeal and no substance.

And I too have noted the sexist tendencies of Senator from Chicago–beginning with the primary election, from Obama’s serial ‘sweetie’ problems, to referring to Hillary’s menstrual period, to Obama’s approving references to the Jay-Z lyrics to “99 Problems”.
Unfortunately, our Democratic women’s groups were too ideologically hamstrung to speak out.

Was it sexist of Palin to think that she could wink her way through a serious matter like the Vice Presidential debates during these serious times in our country? Funny she didn’t do any of that during any of her debates in Alaska. You betcha! I wonder why Palin behaved that way…
Unlike these fake female Democrats, many of us women think with more than just our anatomy about who should get our votes. We think about the issues that the people stand for.

Of course this is a sexist ad. The ad quotes McCain stating that he would pick a VP who could help him with economic issues then shows his VP choice winking. The implication is that Palin is someone who obviously, since she is winking, does not know about the economy. Imagine a wink from Biden in this same context. You would see that to mean that the man, who does know about the economy, is conveying to the audience a message about his competence — wink — I know even more than I’m saying. It’s not necessary even to hear my words to know that I’m knowledgeable. The woman winking looks flirtatious. We are expected to deduce that of course this attractive woman, winking, is not knowledgeable about the economy, can’t be, since she’s just an attractive and sexy woman. The whole ad rests on a sexist interpretation of Palin. That she is, indeed, a h knowledgeable and accomplished state governor, used to dealing with economic issues and does, in fact, contribute this knowledge to the ticket is rendered invisible ONLY because of the sexism with with we are expected to view her.
Another lifelong Democrat voting McCain/Palin

Sarah Palin is the real sexist here. How disturbing that the first time a woman is on the ticket for the Republican party and she winks at her audience! What if there was an ad showing Michelle and Barack Obama pounding fists (which they did)? Would that be consider racist? OF COURESE!!!! It is a fact that Palin wink and yes I was turned off by that but it doesn’t make it right for Obama’s campaign to use it as an attack. I think it would be easy to put an ad together showing the Obama’s pounding fists in a derogatory way.

Posted by: Aimee | November 1, 2008, 12:45 am 12:45 am

This is absurd. You are blaming Obama for pointing out what the Republicans (off the record) have been saying…that she is ill-prepared??!!! That she is not intellectually curious!!!
And McCain treats women with respect? Like cheating on and dumping his first wife because she had some health problems…like calling his current wife an obscenity that most of us never hear or utter(I am not talking about the “f” word here, but the “c” word). Like his absolute lack of any affection with current wife and complete awkwardness. Like his historical record of “sleeping around” in his younger days. Wow, what a respecter of women this guy is.
And compare that to Obama who, by all reports and everything we have seen, seems to have a very caring and affectionate relationship with his wife.
Who is the better role model for people?
And what exactly was being implied by the ad? You hypersensitive people see everything as mysoginistic. Give me a break. BO’s point was that on such a serious topic as the economy, in an area that McCain admits he is weak and said his VP needed the expertise, in this critical area given what is happening in the markets, he selects someone who is in completely over her head…who is so over her head that they can’t even let her take one-on-one interviews with the media because they are convinced she will fail. If you should be mad at anyone it should be McCain for handling her this way because HE is the one who thinks she is an not very capable. McCain is the one who has kept her bottled up. But of course that is Obama’s fault. Right…
All BO is doing is playing an ad off the conversation that the Republicans themselves have established.
Really, both her and McCain’s lack of intellectual curiousity are the real scary thing here. They both shoot from the hip with not real detail or depth on an issue. They both are ill prepared for the White House. And anyone who feels that Palin is an appropriate VP candidate is either the typical self-loathing Democrat, or a closet Republican. Anyone who is honest (as many Repubs have already done) will admit she is way over her head…and seems like an ideologue not interested in exploring ideas. I find it hard to believe any Hillary supporter could support her.

SoetoroObama and the liberal, biased media are sexist. The nasty comments are always directed at Sarah. Maybe they should pick on the nutbag Biden. When he was in Oakville Mo he tried to get a man to stand up that was in a wheel chair. LOL. I guess he really thinks that Obama and he have the power to make crippled people walk as well as other things. Obamas lipstick on a pig and old fish comment was disgusting. I was a Hillary supporter now I am for McCain and Palin.

Brad, you have McCain’s dating record precisely correct. Don’t you find it interesting, Brad, that all we know or see concerning Obama’s romantic relationships with women is Michelle? Aren’t you even the slight bit curious as to what kind of relationship he had before Michelle? Why is it that no one knows any of his past girlfriends? What is the media hiding for him this time?

All of you who are talking about how badly McCain treated his first wife, how about how Bill Clinton treated his first wife? Not to mention it made national news for weeks. The majority of the Democrats gave Bill a pass, as well as Hillary did. Hillary stayed with the big creep hoping he would help her break through the glass ceiling. She lost again, sorry to say.
One of the big differences between Hillary and Sara, Sara is a self made woman, not depending on her husband or anyone else to help her get too the top. She will run again, so get out of her way.

Hey guys, just heard on Money News, you can forget your tax credit with BO. Stocks are down and it’s not getting better. Maybe all those people/countries with secret donations to the BO campagin will pitch in to pay your gas and house payment.

She winked at the camera and American people not just during the debate but at most public events. She is the only one denigrating the status of woman. This time around people were smarter and she got what she deserved — sacked back to Alaska. People like her have no place in national stage.
