In Philly, Conservative Talk Radio Host Backs Obama

On his talk show on WPHT today, conservative Philadelphian Michael Smerconish endorsed Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

Listen HERE.

Smerconish did so by reading a couple paragraphs from his pending op-ed in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"I’ve decided," he said. "My conclusion comes after reading the candidates’ memoirs and campaign platforms, attending both party conventions, interviewing both men multiple times, and watching all primary and general election debates.

"John McCain is an honorable man who has served his country well. But he will not get my vote. For the first time since registering as a Republican 28 years ago, I’m voting for a Democrat for president.

"I may have been an appointee in the George H.W. Bush administration, and master of ceremonies for George W. Bush in 2004, but last Saturday I stood amidst the crowd at an Obama event in North Philadelphia," says the Republican.

Smerconish has given us some more from his op-ed:

"Terrorism. The candidates disagree as to where to prosecute the war against Islamic fundamentalists. Barack Obama is correct in saying the front line in that battle is not Iraq, it’s the Afghan-Pakistan border. Osama bin Laden crossed that border from Tora Bora in December 2001, and we stopped pursuit. The Bush administration outsourced the hunt for bin Laden and, instead, invaded Iraq.

"No one in Iraq caused the death of 3,000 Americans on 9/11. Our invasion was based on a false predicate, so we have no business being there, regardless of whether the surge is working. Our focus must be the tribal-ruled FATA region in Pakistan. Only recently has our military engaged al-Qaeda there in operations that mirror those Obama was ridiculed for recommending in August 2007.

"Last spring, Obama told me, ‘It’s not that I was opposed to war [in Iraq]. It’s that I felt we had a war that we had not finished.’  Even Sen. Joe Lieberman conceded to me just last Friday that ‘the headquarters of our opposition, our enemies today,’ is the FATA."

Smerconish is taking a lot of heat from his fellow GOPers, as one might imagine.

Chris Buckley was fired for coming out in support of Obama.
I hope Mr. Smerconish is allowed to keep his job by the right wing.

I’m proud of him!
I kind of knew it was coming, because he was talking about how Barack was talking about the Afghan-Pakistan border at a time when no one else was really paying attention to it… and this was something he said last year.

I hope Ms. Smerconish does the honorable thing and resigns from hers

I’m glad he has the guts to speak out for the right person. Its a shame McCain and company have resorted to the ugliest, nastiest, and most dishonorable campaign – they even beat out the Rove/Bush/Cheney tactics this time around. Just listen to those lying robo-calls to get an idea – after McCain said he would run a clean, honorable campaign. I call him McLies.

So some relatively unknown DJ endorses McCain? Is that more important than Barbra Steisand endorsing him? I DON’t think so! BABS RULES! All you American airheads out there, follow her example or at least listen to Oprah.
You can almost pick out the fools for Obama — they are all followers who don’t know how to lead and wouldn’t recognize a leader if they tripped over one.

jake
at the end of your article you called michael a her.
I hope many other people are searching their conscious, and deciding enough is enough, it is time to get this country back on track.
mccain is not bush, but he has not told us how he will be different.
time to take a chance on a change.
a ( diehard, crying in my beer for hillary support) who has voted for obama.

Wait, how come there are no GOP bloggers here complaining about ACORN? Oh, that’s right b/c they are busy readying attacks on another one of their own who is willing to tell the truth: Smerconish. Kudos to you, Smerconish, for having the guts and the intelligence to put country first!

My son’s cub scout leader endorsed Obama first. We should listen to this man. Oh, yes. He’s a wimp just like Obama and the only thing he can lead are 7-year olds.

Jack….oh thank god one of you GOP zealots finally showed up. It’s boring without you, here in the land of reality. Thanks for stopping by and cheering all of us up. McCain used to be in the boy scouts, but he threw too many tantrums and they kicked him out.

PhillyforMcCain: that was a mouth full.
I also heard that on Sunday, meet the press, Colin Powell will be endorsing Obama.
It seems to you, PhillyforMcCain, that all the highly intelligent people are actually airheads… I will vote with the airheads of America then. Go Airheads!

no matter how,
chris buckley son of william f buckley, is supporting obama.
there will be many (i’m not going to tell you) bigwig reps.voting for obama, because they want this country to rise again.
I cannot believe i am going to have to go watch “W” to find out what may have really been going on in our gov. because we sure didn’t find out over the last eight years.
and what we did find out only made me hold my head down in shame.
our national nightmare is almost over.
don’t take a chance on the nightmare not being over, but just a turn over in the bed, and the nightmare continues.
noway, no how, no mccain.

“The MSNBC job instead went to Joe Scarborough, whose evening program Scarborough Country was retooled for the morning as Morning Joe.”
Wow, a MSNBC employee supports Obama. Look for him to replace Scarborough.
Nothing to see here. move along. Might as well tell us about Colin Powell endorsing Obama. We know the black guy supports him.

Thank God someone on thr right sees this man as just what he is ….smart and able to think not just for his own welfare but for this country. Mr Obama can do great things but he will need people to get behind him and for once not harp on the usual “abortion and guy marriage” crap that comes out of the neocon mindset. I too hope his job is not on the line . He thought this thru and had a wonderful chance to look at both men and really know what they wanted to do if elected. Sorry to say Sen McCain is really to fixated on Iraq to go forward on any other level. I have had a bad feeling for months about this issue he seemed to only talk about anything else because he had to. Thank you sir for this thoughtful leap of faith.I pray the rest of America follows suit.

I knew Smerc was leaning that way. Great to have his support. You people are just jealous.
People are rejecting the “hate speak” that is being spewed and that is why more and more republicans will vote for Obama. You all will be left with the fringe haters and racists if it keeps up. Just keep wallowing in the hate. Decent people will reject it.
Godspeed Obama.

I listened to Michael Smerconish this morning on my way into my dowtown Philly office. I was elated to hear that another “thinks for himself” Republican like myself has come to his senses and put America before his party. This election isn’t about Dems or Repubs but about the American way of life. Obama will retool us to compete in the 21st century. McCain would continue to lead America onto the list of failed great nation/states in history books alongside Egypt, Rome, Spain and England in . Obama for AMERICA!

McCain is an honerable man who means well and has the best intersts of the country at heart. However, he has pathetic management skills and will cause massive damage to this country if he were to become president. Around Jun/July 2007, his campaign fell apart due to gross mismanagement of stunning incompetence. He hung on and the rest of the Republicans self-destructed, so he won the primaries by default. He then ran a disturbingly incompetent general campaign with no one seemingly in charge of anything.
McCain may be able to lead, but he cannot manage.

Looks like people are bailing the “McCain ship” as it sinks into the ocean.
I like McCain as a person and war hero, but unfortunately, he picked the wrong VP and he let other people tell him how to run his campaign.
Join Hillary. You both learned a hard lesson.

true reagan buckley fiscal conservatives…
are leaving.
it is only the right wing whackos that came to power in the last decade …the same ones who sold out “smart” for “cowboy”
the same ones who trashed our country
the same ones who were stupid enough to call people unpatriotic because they didn’t support Bush…the worst president in our nation’s history.
the same ones who are proud of ignorance over brains…
that are backing a ticket that could “top” Bush Cheney as the worst ticket we have ever seen…
time for brains to come back to the white house.
it’s time for anti-American zealotry to go.
it’s time for us to become America again…
not this bizarro, pseudo religios state…where being dumb and loudly ignorant of the fact is a badge of honor.
It is time to save our country.

Sen. John McCain, meet Joe the plumber. Unlike Samuel Wurzelbacher, Joe’s given name is…Joe.
And, unlike Wurzelbacher, he’s a licensed plumber.
Joe Moenck, a plumber in Zumbrota, Minn., is a member of Plumbers and Pipe Fitters (UA) Local 6—which, like all building and construction trades unions, has high professional standards for its members—such as making sure they hold a license to practice their craft.
Moenck was dismayed to see McCain repeatedly trot out “Joe the Plumber” during this week’s presidential debate with Sen. Barack Obama. Says Moenck:
I felt that when John McCain was talking about Joe the Plumber, I didn’t feel that that was sincere. He didn’t mention the middle class in the last two debates at all. It upset me that he brought this up strictly because he had to, because his ratings are low among the middle class. I don’t think he believes what he said, but he knows his support is low there and said that strictly for the ratings, as a campaign strategy.
When “Joe the Plumber” Wurzelbacher met Obama in Toledo on Sunday, Wurzelbacher expressed concern about being taxed on earnings of $280,000 per year should he ever start a small plumbing business.
But, as Moenck can tell you, hard workers like him in the building trades aren’t paid anywhere near $250,000 a year. For Moenck—and even for Wurzelbacher, who right now makes far less than his dream salary—Obama’s tax plan would mean a decrease in taxes by more than $1,200 a year—more than under McCain’s tax plan. And should Wurzelbacher ever pull in $250,000, he’d only pay a few hundred dollar more in taxes under Obama’s plan. Not a deal-breaker for a guy thinking of starting a small business.
Wurzelbacher also has a bit of an agenda. He’s a member of the Associated Builders & Contractors, a nonunion trade group that has endorsed McCain.
So, in addition to Moenck, we’d like to introduce McCain to a few other real Joe the plumbers.
There’s Joe Gutzwiller, a licensed plumber in Indianapolis and member of UA Local 440. Gutzwiller shares a lot in common with Moenck, including seeing through McCain’s pretensions of support for America’s middle class.
I heard the one about health care, where McCain wants to tax our benefits, and I just think he’s looking out for bigger businesses and corporations leaving middle class people out of the whole picture.
I think Obama is actually trying to help out middle class people who are feeling the effect of our economy. From what I’ve seen in the debates, he’s trying to prevent future problems and give the middle class a tax break to help stimulate the economy.
And then there’s Joe Tatum in Virginia, who’s been a licensed plumber for 35 years after apprenticing with UA Local 10.
McCain thinks we make over $200,000. I don’t make anywhere close to that. If I did, I could retire now instead of waiting ’til I’m 62.
Over in Colorado, Joe Martinez, a plumber and member of UA Local 3, has this to say:
John McCain doesn’t understand working families and I don’t understand how any plumber can vote for John McCain. He’s just not in touch with the working man at all.
And there’s Joe Vicena, a member of UA Local 75 in Milwaukee, who sees McCain as continuing the same disastrous economic policies as George W. Bush.
Our jobs are being sent overseas, people are losing their pensions and their 401(k)s, and the stock market is tanking. We need change in a positive manner. McCain is not the person to do it. He is absolutely not the person. Me and my family can’t take four more minutes, much less four more years, of the missteps and mispolicies we’ve had the past eight.
Moenck, Gutzwiller, Tatum, Martinez and Vicena agree with their union that Obama is the best choice for America’s plumbers—and all middle-class workers—because, as under Bush, McCain’s economic policy would benefit the wealthiest and flush the rest of us down the tank. As Moenck puts it:
If the middle class doesn’t have money to call Joe the Plumber, Joe the Plumber’s not gonna be in business very long.

Real Republicans are trying to save their party by endorsing Obama.
They do not want to devolve into the racist thugs that the McCain/Palin ticket have embraced.
Their party is about to implode and this is the only way to show that it is still occupied by intelligent, PATRIOTIC AMERICANS.
Bravo.

geevill,
I usually disregard long posts, but I read your in full. Great Job.
I myself started out as a McCain supporter, but have changed my mind.
McCain has, in recent days, become like a villain in the Batman movie – Two-face. An american hero has turned out to be the villain. Although in the case of Two-face, events outside his control sealed his fate. But in the case of McCain he has made the “choice”. He is trotting this beautiful country of ours with his evil sidekick Palin – an incompetent politician who only appeals to our base-selves.

The reality is that Obama is a pragmatic centrist. That used to be a conservative calling card, which is why I the first vote I cast in a presidential election was for Reagan in ’84. Obama’s actually a pretty conservative guy.
The right wing today is completely out to lunch. Republicans need some time in the wilderness. Hopefully someone like Jindal will lead them back.

Posted by: Tungsten | October 17, 2008, 4:33 pm 4:33 pm

any of the good McCain may have done in his life has been diminished by his disgraceful and disgusting conduct in this campaign. any reasonable person, republican or democrat know that obama is not a terrorist or has been influenced by them. palin is worse than McCain because she claims to be a Christian when she is actually a pathological liar and bearing false witness about Obama. the only way McCain wins this election is to pile false accusations of terrorism and voter registration fraud on Obama – he cannot win promoting his own policies because they are identical to Bush. McCain would rather divide the country in an attempt to win an election with his fraudulent accusations. shame on McCain and Palin – they are promote ugly racism and hatred and represent everything that is wrong about our great country.

Dear Michael Smerconish; thank you for making a clearheaded and reasoned analysis of the candidates, resulting in your endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama for president. It took courage for you to go public with your choice and to fully explain your reasoning. The flack from your Republican base will be intense, but, you truly have put “country first.”

No time for the National Anthem.
New Hampshire News
Londonderry Teen Left Out Of Obama Rally
A Londonderry high school student was supposed to sing the national anthem at Barack Obama’s rally Thursday. Just hours before he was to hit the stage, the obama campaign told him he was no longer needed! 17-year old Zach Bengal says he was bumped because the campaign had to make time for more speeches. He says the campaign worker who broke the news was apologetic and said they’d keep him in mind for the future.

It goes to prove that more and more conservatives are jumping ship. I applaud his courage. I hope he doesn’t face any professional repercussions. Conservatives are starting to realize that the views of McCain and his running mate Palin are not good for this country and lacking a moral compass.

Posted by: Tandalyn | October 17, 2008, 4:35 pm 4:35 pm

I think Mr. Smerconish is a COURAGEOUS MAN. . .much more than say, GWB !!!! It takes guts to DO THE RIGHT THING . .go with the BEST PERSON. . etc.
McCain once had that Courage, but in fact, has reduced himself to the right wing rhetoric. . .NOT what we need right now. It’s amazing that McCain once spoke out AGAINST smear campaigning, and has adopted it for
himself. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth just to listen to someone you once respected !!! So, Mr. Smerconish is only one of many, perhaps he’ll get more attention because of his position on radio, but there are many.
And btw, Palin does NOT help the situation. She is UNQUALIFIED, and getting Bin Laden will never happen were she to be in charge. And why haven’t we heard more about her ABUSE OF POWER ?? Can you imagine if it were Obama or Biden with that hanging over their heads !!! Country FIRST. Thanks Mr. Smerconish. You’re not alone.

I watched the dinner McCain and Obama attended last night and I felt extremely sad. It was a brief glimpse of the man I have felt for the last 8 years would have been a great president. I was a McCain supporter up until very recently. I have been deeply conflicted about this change. However, McCain has taken my party into a deep, dark hole and I just cannot align myself with this dangerous ideological position.
Not all republicans are racist or fanatical. Not all republicans follow the party boss regardless of their bad judgment.
This country has come a long way and I will not participate in promoting a new class/race war.
Obama gets my republican vote.

When I was 18 years old I cast my first vote for president and that vote was cast for Ronald Reagan.
I confess since that time I have not exclusively voted republican, but most of the time I have. This year I cannot.
Sen. McCain has done things in order to win that should disqualify him. He is in the process of creating a divide in this country that we have not seen the likes of in over 40 years. His campaign is truly a disgrace.

The trickle of intellectual conservatives parting ways with the current GOP leadership and its chosen candidates is turning into a torrent. This is absolutely unprecedented. Every Republican should ask themselves why this is happening, and then proceed to do what they now know they must–just say “no” to the Rovian neocons.

Just out of curiosity what exactly is wrong with “spreading the wealth?”
Call me crazy, but trickle down does not work. I don’t think making the wealthy bear more of a tax burden while helping the middle class is a bad thing.
I am truly confused as most Americans would never pay more taxes under Obama’s plan. How stupid are people??

But do you know what I find so surprising in all of these recent endorsements from the conservative republicans is their calling out McCain’ on his choice of running mate and I have to ask myself; what if JM hadn’t chosen her would these people or would you Smerc stuck with him or was she just the tipping point on the scale?

Dee- I AGREE!!! I am a small business owner and I am scared to death about Obama spreading my wealth around. This is coming from a guy who has never worked for a small business! He is so naive to think that by taxing someone who makes $250,000 more is going to help anyone. The 3% increase he is proposing would cost me $75,000! That would be mean letting people go!!
Wake up America!!

If the Alaskan’s are so keen on their govenor then they can go down with the ship. Alaska’s glory days are over. Their elder statesman are beyond their years or going to jail. I think that they are all secretly praying that Obama is elected so we can all get this train wreck back on the tracks and head back to what America is supposed to be. Small business owners NETTING more than $250,000 would be charged a higher tax on anything OVER the FIRST $250,000. Say you make $260,000, the higher tax would apply only to the $10,000. Now tell me, how many small gusiness actually HAVE PROFITS OVER $250,000????

McCain has been trying to make Americans afraid of Obama. After seeing Obama and reading about him, I’m not afraid of Obama. He is extraordinarily intelligent and has an ideal temperament for the job.
Of the four, I am mostly afraid of Palin and somewhat afraid of McCain. McCain truly does seem erratic and has made many decisions in this campaign that cause great concern over his judgment. The biggest concern to me is his selection of Palin. They don’t even let her interview unless it’s guaranteed to be a fluff interview by a friendly reporter that will hold her hand to protect her. And even then she says things that seem incoherent. I can understand why the keep her away from the press; I guess it IS better to have everyone suspect she’s incompetent than to have everyone know for sure and frequently reinforce that knowledge. Still, Palin IS NOT qualified by intelligence, knowledge or temperament to be President. Yet a Palin presidency is a real possibility. THAT scares me.
In this instance, Michael Smerconish made the right decision for America.

Obama was right, we cannot assume this race is over. Let them believe the polls are tightening up (they aren’t). Let them believe all whites are racists deep down (we aren’t). I fully expect an Obama landslide, because I believe that the real America consists of open minded color blind folks.

Republicans “spread the wealth” by taking it FROM the middle class and giving it TO the rich.
That’s ok. No problem with that.
But suggest to make a more equitable system… that’s evil!
People will vote against their own interests to make sure that the top 5% of Americans can keep exploiting them. That rediculous rationale is really amazing.
I just got back from Europe. Their papers are suggesting we ask the Queen Elizibeth to let us rejoin the British Empire because we obviously can’t govern ourselves.

Clearly you do not represent the average American. I fall firmly into the middle class and I would dearly love for the wealth to be spread around. I suspect there are more of me than there are of you.
“spreading the wealth” around is not a statement that will scare most of us, we would gladly embrace it. I personally have not yet been trickled on and I have been waiting a really, really long time.
You misrepresent Obama’s tax plan. An independent group has assessed both McCain’s plan and Obama’s plan and has flat out said Obama’s will be better for the bulk of Americans, i.e., the middle class.

Hmmmm…don’t be surprised by their tactic of trying to alienate half the voters. Rove perfected it. I call it the 51% doctrine. That was all he needed for Shrub. They had no plans or desire to unite the nation (like Obama clearly does). They just wanted to win so their rich buddies could get richer.

I started out thinking McCain was the one to vote for because I didn’t know who Obama was. I have changed my mind, as so many others have, if not because he doesn’t seem to have a clear statement of what his policies will be, but because he seems childish and vicious in his attacks on Obama. He takes a phrase such as “spreading the wealth around” and puts his own “spin” on it, then revs the crowds up with it. His appearances remind me of vigilante scenes from the old cowboy movies. Everyone going on hatred and fear instead of intelligence and common sense. Obama has the capability, besides a lot of other attributes, to remain calm and think things through before making a comment. This is the kind of leader we need in these terrible times.

“The Bush tax cuts are going to expire if Obama wins. That means I am will get a tax increase on top of Obama’s increase of the “rich”"
Obama plans to allow the Bush tax cut for the top income bracket (over $250K) to expire. The rate will revert from 35% to 39% (which it was during the Clinton years). All other Bush tax cuts will be left in place and for the middle class especially there will be additional tax cuts.
“- also capital gains will go up 10% under Obama’s plan. As a business owner, this is a disincentive for investment!!”
Obama plans to raise the rate from its current 15% to 20% for people with incomes in the highest tax bracket. He also plans to eliminate capital gains taxes on small business investment.
“Does Obama’s record mean anything to you? He has never, ever voted for tax cuts!!”
Obama voted 7 times “for measures that would have lowered taxes for many, while raising them on a relative few, either corporations or affluent individuals.”
Factcheck says a close look at the record reveals that Obama has “voted consistently to restore higher tax rates on upper income taxpayers but not on middle- or low-income workers.”
The lesson as always? Right wingers lie.

We are a great nation that needs a leader for everyone not a few, a leader that would put our Nation were it is supposed to be, a country of dreams that can come true. At the moment I think that Obama is the leader that will help us grow again as a better unified Nation. For first time a lot of us have come to realize that we can like another candidate that is not of our Party and vote for the person. Some can’t or will not do so, it is hard and scary to take that step, but we have a big responsability as an American and that is our country needs us to make the right choice. Obama 08

Speaking of newspapers and stories.
You guys should all check out the good, investigative reporting the Palestra college kids are doing. You know, the good investigative reporting the MSM USED to do…back in the day.
These Palestra reporters have been working on the Ohio voter registration/voting fraud story, and have uncovered an Obama campaign worker, who lived in Florida, but recently attended Hofstra University in New York, who showed up in Ohio to work for O’s campaign on October 1st. He registered to vote from a “sponsor family” address and proceeded to “early vote” on October 4th, but will be leaving Ohio immediately following the November 4th election.
Apparently the campaign worker’s supervisor at O Headquarters got very upset because the reporters were trying to question him, and kept saying what the worker did, and how he voted was “legal,” and there’s “no story here” so why are you asking questions?
The Palestra reporters have spoken to local prosecutors who told them the laws there state that merely a “temporary presence” in a state does not make one eligible to register and vote.
Maybe some more of the MSM should look into this and see if there’s any additional fires burning from this smoke? Perhaps in all of the battleground states??

About Christopher Buckley, he has spoken on Hardball with Chris Matthews about why he had to offer his resignation. After the endorsement for Obama, the magazine was slammed by many readers about it, threatening to end their subscription.
What does it tell:

Smerconish is a morning drive radio huckster here in Philly. Although a nice guy,he is a rather obnoxious and self promoting pusher of mediocre books. He is pro abortion and immature in believing that Obama would be a better leader of the military than a man with over 2 decades as a Naval Aviator and boss of the largest flight wing in addition to his Congressional and Senate experience. Obama is less experienced as a manager than Palin by far and Obama is running for the top office not VP. The Democrat ticket is upside down. If it were Biden on top that might make a difference in the confidence of many, in the ticket. As to Mikes radio show here in Philly, seems like he is playing to the democrat base. Philadelphia is a corrupt democrat town just like Chicago where Obama got his great experience.

I just got my ballot in the mail and I had my wife take a picture of me making my selection of Obama for president. I want my future generations to see that I was one the Americans who did the right thing and voted for Obama to ensure that American will be a great and wonderful place for them to live and raise their families.
At one time the Republican party was the party for families but they have lost their direction. They are now a party that is destroying America from the inside out by the use of their misguide beliefs that they are the chosen ones.
It’s time we the people take back what is rightfully ours and remove the rot that is spreading across our beautiful nation.

I am from Philly, and even though I am a Democrat and he is a very smart man whether our beliefs match or not. Also, with the news that the Chicago Tribune (no democratic endorsement in 161 years, and Colin Powell himself may be endorsing Mr. Obama. now Im sorry if those are political “elites” but I know these people are smarter than me on many inumerable things and the converative backing a democrat is telling.
I ask all the Republicans what do u say about that. I know the “chicago” question taints that in your ind but what about the other two conservatives?
Btw Susan, what can’t you by with $152,500 (the proposed 39% of Obama) that you could with $160,000 (at current 36% rate) Did you get sucked into an ARM or is the stock market crash sucking you dry. McCain never commanded anybody in the military. He graduated near the bottom of his class, crashed 3 aircraft and I am pretty sure that his butt was saved by his father just a few times or he would of been washed out of there. What an incompetent old man he is. I don’t want him any where near the red button.

I am proud of all the republicans who are realizing that we have to be an American now and vote for the very intelligent Senator Obama who has the commitment and the determination to help our country. We now need a new leader who is ready and willing to go line by line over the government budget and weed out any of the things that should go. It is time we had a Smart Man as our president. Not a republican who is old and has stood by while all the corrupt policies have happened. Especially these last 8 years of total destruction of our lives, military, and government.

Obama supporters like Smerc, Buckley, Powell and Brooks, in addition to over 60 million Americans, need to be vigilant, vote, early if possible. We need to send a strong message to the ultra conservative right that we won’t tolerate your stranglehold on our country any longer. We mean business this time, and we will not stand for it one more day. The last eight years have nearly ruined this great country, and we love it just like you claim you do. Thanks for bringing this story to our attention, Mr. Tapper. I am joining Mr. Smerconish as a conservative voting Obama. Indeed, while I disagree with him on some issues (immigration, abortion, torture, closing Gitmo – wow some of those I disagree with McCain on too), I am passionate and enthusiastic in my support for Obama as the man we need at this moment; unlike many McCain voters, I am not voting AGAINST someone but FOR the candidate of my choice. That is what the republican party used to do – inspire people to vote for better ideas, a stronger country and a better vision for America. Now, it is all fear and smear. How low.
I will admit it was a long hard road for me as well, and I must tell you that Obama won me over. It is true that he has not been in Washington for 20 plus years and does not have gray hair (well not much), but his competence, confidence and calm – as well as his pragmatism – make him the best choice to lead us for the next 4 years. I remain a republican and hope that my party earns my vote in 4 years, but with the disturbing antics of the RNC, the erratic and unnerving actions of Sen. McCain, and his disastrous – and I think disqualifying – pick of Palin (who still cannot bear to have a press conference and will have to have McCain at her side when she sits with Brian Williams next week), the party will not have my vote this year.
It is a scary time in America when we are attacked and viewed as traitors and called other hideous names for who we plan to vote for. However, I am proud to support Obama and look forward to his presidency.

Is America perfect? No.
If you think that you are delusional. I believe we are a bastion of hope and freedom, but we need help for our people, in terms of economy, national security, health care and education.
Also elitism: practice of or belief in rule by an elite. or consciousness of or pride in belonging to a select or favored group.
Do republicans AND democrats not have pride in belonging to their group that they believe is better. Unless republicans all of a sudden grew a humility that the democrats didn’t
Elite: representing the most choice or select; best:
Taking the first definition of elitism, you believe in rule by the best or most select. I haven’t heard McCain’s people say, I’m an average guy hoping to be president. I think Republicans may think that he is the best.

Posted by: brett | October 17, 2008, 8:26 pm 8:26 pm

I’ve been a conservative most of my life. But facts are facts. The GOP and the conservative movement cannot begin to rebuild themselves until Bush and Cheney are out of office.
We can’t defend the Bush-Cheney record to the public anymore. Not with Bush’s approval rating hovering around 20%. Yet McCain can’t totally break with Bush on the key issues of taxes and foreign policy. Because if he takes away his tax cuts, there’s nothing much left to his economic policy.
So I really think the GOP has to punt on the Presidential race. Those down ticket GOP candidates for the Senate and House should do whatever it takes for them to win, distancing themselves from McCain-Palin if necessary.

He has the best show on radio, and even though I’m a D and he’s an R, I’ve always respected his thoughtful opinions, even when we sharply disagree.

This “Mike” changed his tune for a reason. As smart as everybody says he is, I am wondering what is going on in his life. It always looks nice to have a supporter for the other party duck out and turn on his old friends.
Obama is a shady guy. look at how he bumped two other black people while campaigning for the state and the Federal. He was not a christian till the Black Pastors who he was working with trying to organize them with Acorn. They found out that he wasn’t attending a Church at all. So he looked around and found the most radical one of all for his liking. Then he became a “Christian” quote. He is one heck of an Orator. But that doesn’t make him a president. He also helped Acorn train people to get bank loans for houses. He is one of those Dems that help create this Debacle.

Posted by: Mikel | October 17, 2008, 9:52 pm 9:52 pm

@jjerro
Wow, a thoughtful man who has no true history of racial bias because he choices to back a candidate that is also black is ONLY doing so because of the color of skin?
I would understand if you said he’s looking for a job in the cabinet or holding a grudge for the way he was treated in the previous administration. But only because of the color of his skin? Wow I can’t wait for Condolezza Rice to support him as well.
I understand that black voting for black is a natural reaction for people and a large part of the African American base. But in Gallup where where 6% said Obama’s race would make him vote against him 8% said it would make it vote for him. For McCain? 6% against, 7% for, not much of a difference.

Smerconish has been slowly moving left ever since his gigs started at the Obama Cable Network. He left conservative land a long time ago. He is tired of the radio and wants to get into television full time. He will lose half his audience with this stunt and he knows it. He will not last the year in Philly and will replace David Gregory in his time slot. Endorsing Obama is just the prerequisite for MSNBC anchors and he just checked off that box. His wife is also a real estate broker so you know he is looking for the bigger paycheck these days. Too bad he had to sell his soul to do it.

I cannot reward the incredible incompetence of the past 8 years, or the kool-aid drinkers who hold no Republican, especially not the President, accountable for anything. Also, both McCain and Palin seem quite unpredictable, angry and bitter, while Obama and Biden are much calmer and grown-up, and much more likely to build consenses in Washington.

I am afraid you exemplify exactly what is driving people away from the Republican party. If someone disagrees with you, then you immediately reply with disparaging remarks questioning his motives. This is the Republican M.O. America where you are “Free to agree with me” or else be suspect.
Doe it never occur that perhaps this man, after careful consideration, actually believes that electing Sen. Obama is the best thing for this country?
Look at the comments by other Republicans who are switching to Obama, many precisely because of this irrational, mean-spirited attitude of the Republican Party. Listen to them. Perhaps you can learn something.
Peace.

As a side note, it’s become common to see people refer to the” 3000 Americans killed on 9/11″. The terrorists chose the World Trade Center for both its financial and international links. 327 foreign nationals also perished, from 53 different countries. The world not only felt our pain, they shared it.

I find it interesting that when a conservative examines all the facts and concludes that someone who is not a conservative will make a better choice for President of the United States, he is accused of “selling his soul” and may “suffer the consequences” from the other conservatives. This is what some of you are saying about Michael Smerconish (even suggesting he may loose his position). Look what happened to Chris Buckley—the magazine his father founded dismissed him. What happened to freedom of speech and freedom of choice? The constitution was establish to “secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.”

Conservatives like Michael Smerconish and Christopher Buckley give a positive face to being conservative with their reasoned and thoughtful dialogue. Smerconish long ago became the Philly version of Dave Gergen. Never a Conservative, just a RINO. He wants the invites to do tv and write for the newspaper and he thinks the only way he will get invited back is if he goes out of his way to bash Republicans.
(Note to Mike, to do regular tv you had to have worked in a Dem administration or for a Dem politician.)
When his show was on in the afternoon I’d switch over to NPR as it was less leftist.

Posted by: Howard, New York | October 18, 2008, 12:23 am 12:23 am

Last time I check Lieberman was the head of a committee which can only be assigned by the majority party south jersey. The parts of the conservative movement that have any brains or integrity have abandoned the floundering Republican Party. All that are left in that movement are the racists, fascists and those followers who are purely incapable for thinking for themselves. That is why there is so much violent and criminal activity going on associated with Republicans right now. All of the Republicans left for support are the bottom of the barrel, the worst of the worst.

Posted by: Chris | October 18, 2008, 12:45 am 12:45 am

I am glad that so many Republicans have the courage to vote their conscience in this election and support Obama. I think it’s important for democrats to remain respectful about all of our differences.
In that spirit, I have to add that I am an African American woman who is voting for Obama because I think he is the best candidate, not because he is the black candidate. The fact that white conservatives are able to see him as the best candidate as well, despite our complex racial history is very inspiring to me. This makes me think that we may be on the verge of a very exciting time for our country, and it means that we may be able to come together in ways that we never before imagined. One America. You’ve gotta love it.

Hey – He was free to disagree, that does not mean we have to vote for someone who supports a war that we think is wrong.
But we didn’t accuse him of being unpatriotic, or a turn-coat, or doing it only for the money. We argued against his POLICIES!
Read these posts. There appear to be two kinds of Republicans posting – those who have thoughtfully decided to vote for Obama, and the rest are all name-callers. (Donna at least is stuck on tax policy)
I have yet to see one person try to argue against Mr. Smerconish’s points in any rational way.
Just an observation.

As I see it now, Obama is changing from his black liberation theology, and he is more into white liberation theology.

Posted by: Joe | October 18, 2008, 12:55 am 12:55 am

Chris, let’s figure this out together. In typical Presidential elections, those voters identified with a particular party are generally inclined to vote for the person at the top of their ticket. Republicans will vote for McCain because he leads the ticket. The racists are found on the Democrat side as there were very many accounts during the Democratic primaries of Dem voters saying they will never vote for O’Man because of his race.
Let’s tackle your “Fascist” charge. Republicans believe in free markets, capitalism, reduced government, and the Second Amendment to protect themselves from all enemies, foreign and domestic. Democrats believe in more government regulation (except for Fannie and Fannie, sadly) they want the government to run the healthcare system, (hopefully not like the DMV)they believe government should be used to make others “share their wealth” and they pass unworkable gun control laws (Wash DC formerly with toughest gun control law, and how many years did they lead the nation in homicides?) Add to this the Dems nominee was a New Party (Socialist Democrat)candidate in his first run for office. Now, since Fascists use a Socialist model in their treatment of markets and the military, in fact the Dems are the fascists, (I won’t even touch on the issue of actual physical violence or the manner in which these Fascists prevent invited speakers on college campuses from expressing their views.)
You wrote, “All of the Republicans left for support are the bottom of the barrel, the worst of the worst.” After reading this I realized you are probably under 10 years old, if so, I am sorry for taking you to task on your post.
Cheers!

jmmx,
In the event McCain wins, wouldn’t that mean that all of those “thoughtful Republicans” were outvoted by “racist” Democrats who couldn’t pull the lever for Obama?
If you ever listened to or read Smerconish, he states he has never used the term “Conservative” for himself, but that it is applied by CNN/MSNBC when he appears.
I’m sure that about 4 years ago Zell Miller was feeling lots of love from the Dems.
Cheers!

The Kansas City Star declared: “Despite his age and previous health problems, McCain chose a vice presidential candidate who is so clearly unqualified for high office that the thought of her stepping into the presidency is frightening. That irresponsible decision casts serious doubt on McCain’s judgment at this point in his political career. And over the past eight years, Americans have come to know, all too well, the high price of carelessness and ineptitude in the White House.
The Salt Lake paper complained that “out of nowhere, and without proper vetting, the impetuous McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. She quickly proved grievously underequipped to step into the presidency should McCain, at 72 and with a history of health problems, die in office. More than any single factor, McCain’s bad judgment in choosing the inarticulate, insular and ethically challenged Palin disqualifies him for the presidency.
When the leading paper in Utah comes out against McCain well ……

The Republic Party is a criminal organization. Isn’t there a statute against these entities? The acronym RICO comes to mind. The ultimate racket is the theft of our treasury and national wealth, the theft of Iraq’s oil doesn’t even come close to the damage that the racketeers have done to this nation. The Savings & Loans heist and the Enron theft were just dry runs for this current engineered crisis. A Democratic Party triumph in November is the only way back from the edge of the precipice.

Good on you, Smerc. I’ve been enjoying his thoughtful commentary since the Pennsylvania Primary. Part of what’s turning real conservatives off is the ugliness of the McCain/Palin campaign.
Yesterday, Governor Palin said that she liked to campaign in the Pro-America parts of America. Exactly what parts of the United States are Anti-America, Governor?
Last night on Hardball, Michelle Bachman, a Republican Congresswoman from Minnesota, urged the media to investigate which members of the House are un-American.
I just donated to Elwyn Tinklenberg, Bachman’s Democratic opponent. Maybe we can help send her home so that she can conduct the hunt for un-Americans from her living room rather than the U.S. Congress.
What a couple of sanctimonious, idiotic, genuinely un-American demagogues.

Dl’s Post was a great one. I too, am tired of stupid people electing other stupid people to office. McCain has run a vitriolic campaign and has turned off decent people in every political Party, every level of society.
I watched Old Chipmunk-cheeks on Letterman apologize to “Joe the Plumber”for destroying his privacy, then the next day he made it sound like Obama was the one who should apologize. I watched the debate and it was McCain who started this whole thing and mentioned “Joe the Plumber” several times more than Obama did.
I am glad to see more Conservatives, who are of decent moral and ethical persuasion see the clear difference; in temperment, body language;content of ideas; and intelligence.McCain comes off looking like the darling of the fringe element in our society:The racists, the rednecks;the pitifully ignorant, and the greedy..they all support McCain because it’s in their interest to do so.McCain says”he’s not Pres. Bush” but accepted his endorsement and that of Papa Bush, as well.
So,welcome aboard ,Mike, and may other DECENT people do likewise.

To be honest, now when I look at Bush, I think “Okay, now he doesn’t seem to be as bad.”
Bush certainly did not pull so many Hail Marys. The way a candidate runs their campaign can offer a foreshadowing into how they will run their administration should they win. This should tell us something worrying about McCain. Improvise. Have no proper game plan or strategy. Make up as you go along and hope you squeak through.
I get the feeling that Obama’s ground effort is dwarfing McCain’s by ALOT. Not just by the number of offices opened. I keep hearing stories about how McCain offices are empty or shut, while Obama’s are overflowing and buzzing with activity, even in the traditionally GOP states in the Deep South. Which begs the question as to how much money McCain is wasting leasing all those offices which are shut or empty.

I am so glad that so many Democrats have the courage to vote their conscience in this election and vote for Senator McCain and Gov. Palin. They stand for smaller government, lower taxes and job creation a strong military and homeland security. Their opponent is a weak candidate with no record of accomplishing anything except voting for the Global Initiative which gives the UN millions of our tax dollars to fight poverty. If we want to really fight poverty we should do it ourselves to assure the money doesn’t end up in some third world dictator’s pocket like Obama’s cousin Raila Odinga of Kenya. McCain will cut out the middle man and help will go directly to the people who need it. Obama will not do that and he will not help you, the American citizen. If he is elected he will not keep any of the bright shiney promises he has been dangling in front of you for the last two years. He has never kept a political promise he made. He would have gotten what he want from you and will go on to cause orchestrated crisis in all areas of foreign policy. His real plan is to become President of a world federation united under Sharia law. His first step will be to allow all Muslim countries to gain political control of vast areas and Israel will be the first to fall. McCain will not betray America. Obama will..yes he can.

You don’t need to go to the movie “W” to get the inside scoop on George Bush. Just read the books by Bob Woodward. Excellent books filled with inside info directly from the inside sources in the Bush administration, usually named sources.
The direct criticism from these inside sources is incredible. The Bush / Cheny administration will be judged harshly by history, possibly as one of the most dysfunctional, broken and damaging administrations of the last 100 years.
Colin Powell will come out tomorrow endorsing Obama. Amazing, to have a high ranking cabinet official of the administration just ending, to come out and support the other party’s candidate. I doubt that has ever happened before.

All I can say is God help us if Obama wins. If the American people are so naive to not see through this man then we deserve the 4 years that he will beget. Stand by for higher taxes, redistribution of your wealth, massive government spending on top of the bailouts of the last month, and the the acceleration of the dissipation of American political, military, and economic power. Honesty and trustworthiness are important qualities and this man does not display them. We should think long and hard about putting this yes man in the oval office with his liberal friends in control of Congress.

Carolyn,
And giving millions to the UN to fight poverty is a bad thing because?? Do it ourselves? Why? Then we would have to provide all the logistics to fly everything down-when we need our choppers for Iraq and Afghanistan right now. What we need to do is to throw our weight behind the UN to help provide political will to combat poverty together with other countries. McCain and Palin SURE don’t seem concerned about things like genocide in Darfur (Obama and Biden clearly have from the number of reports they have wrote about it).
Stronger military? Because of Bush’s Iraq adventure and poor strategy, soldiers are having to do more tours and stay longer each time. Our military is no longer at 100%. We have had to send the Reserves and National Guard-which were intended for use in an EMERGENCY- to Iraq. Enlistment rates are falling because of the long tours, and the Army has had to lower standards and raise compensation.
Sarah Palin knows nothing about world affairs. She is divisive, saying she enjoys visiting the “Pro-American” states. Well, Sarah, YOUR America consists of fear-mongering, ignorance of the world and paranoia. That’s not OUR America.

Hey Bill. I have read the books and have worked in the Pentagon in the Clinton administration. Politics were no different then and the fact that President Bush gave Woodward open access and told his staff to speak freely is pretty impressive. You would never have seen President Clinton do that. I suspect that history will be a different judge than you. Don’t discount the fact that this country faced unprecedented challenges after 9/11 and this President kept us safe when there was no play book to follow. We are about to send a guy to the White House that I suspect would have tried to vote “present” in such tenuous times. Don’t forget that Powell, who I respect immensely, was a key contributor to going into Iraq. Do you pillory him as you do the President? I participated in the start of OIF and I can assure you that with the exception of a IL legislator who was playing it safe, everyone that was putting their blood on the line was convinced that it was the right thing to do. Pretty easy to be an armchair quarterback isn’t it.

My family is full of strong Christians (of course we don’t believe in murder or would choose abortion). However, there are many hurting people who need not to be judged and need someone who cares. You can not achieve the great commission if you don’t open yourself up to people with other ideas. Jesus welcomed prostitutes, tax collectors, etc. in order to show HIS kingdom.
I really dislike so called conservatives equating Christianity with conservatism. We are first Christians! God gave us free will. We then need to compare the actions of the candidates with things like the fruits of the spirit and the beatitudes. I am my brothers keeper and the candidate my family has chosen falls in line with those Biblical principles. He WILL be our next president. The other candidate on the surface says he’s a Christian but his campaign is the exact opposite in character.
Look at the fruits of the spirit and beatitudes in the candidates. It is his character that will win over the middle class, the poor, the homeless, and the wealthy. Be your brother’s keeper.

You said, ” Don’t forget that Powell, who I respect immensely, was a key contributor to going into Iraq.”
Powell actually tried to get the president to think twice about Iraq. Remember the “Pottery Barn rule”? Remember the “Powell Doctrine”? Both of these were attempts to slow the rush into Iraq. Instead, Bush listened to Cheney.
Powell only participated at the UN because he is the consummate soldier. He resigned soon after because he felt he was used.

Dee,
Let me correct your false optimism.
Here is the summary of the latest polling from RCP
Rasmussen Reports 10/15 – 10/17 3000 LV 2.0 50 45 Obama +5
Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby 10/15 – 10/17 1210 LV 2.9 48 44 Obama +4
Hotline/FD 10/14 – 10/16 804 LV 3.5 50 40 Obama +10
Gallup (Traditional)* 10/14 – 10/16 2155 LV 2.0 49 47 Obama +2
Gallup (Expanded)* 10/14 – 10/16 2314 LV 2.0 51 45 Obama +6
GWU/Battleground 10/12 – 10/16 800 LV 3.5 49 45 Obama +4
IBD/TIPP 10/12 – 10/16 1020 LV 3.5 46 41 Obama +5
LA Times/Bloomberg 10/10 – 10/13 1030 LV 3.0 50 41 Obama +9
CBS News/NY Times 10/10 – 10/13 699 LV — 53 39 Obama +14
USA Today/Gallup (Traditional)* 10/10 – 10/12 761 LV 4.0 50 46 Obama +4
USA Today/Gallup (Expanded)* 10/10 – 10/12 1030 LV 3.0 52 45 Obama +7
Of course, the real story is not the national polling, but the state by state polling.
According to those polls (which have steadily been trending up for Obama), John McCain could WIN EVERY state that is still in play and LOSE the election.
In order to win, he would have to take away a state (or two) where Obama is currently projected to win, and in all of those states, he has at least an 8 point margin.
And William F, its funny how many of those who are “naive” enough to believe Obama is a good choice are some of the pillars of conservatism. I guess you only listen to them when they tell you what you want to hear?

Smerconish is a conservative? Yeah right. I have pointed out his liberal beliefs time and time again on comments on this board. Smerconish is not a real conservative and never has been.
As to where the terrorist front is, how can Smerconish be so stupid. There is no singular terrorist front. Anyone with brains understands that. Does Smerconish actually think that we can afford to fight terrorism in one location when it is as far spread to any place on earth that radical Islam lives, works or resides?
Where was the terrorist front on 911 Smerconish , you dope. Was it in NY at the time or DC at the time. Should we have sent our troops there Smerconish ? Man, grow some and while you are at it, grow some brains.
And Smerconish , did you happen to notice that the problem in Afghanistan happens to be the Pakistani government. Did you happen to notice that we have had American troops there since day one?
Smerconish , you are not a political wit. You are a nitwit. Your understanding of world affairs is shallow at best.
No true conservative or republican could ever vote for THE MOST LIBERAL registered SOCIALIST like Obama.
One other point in his falacy is this. He said a key reason for his decision was because he listend to the debates. Debates are where the candidates spew their talking points. If they prove truthful and consistent with historic record, fine, then it means something. But since Obama has obviously moved from FAR FAR FAR LEFT towards the center just for the sake of an election then a thinking person would readily conclude that Obama is simply LYING in order to get some suckers to vote for him. Smerconish is apparently one of those suckers.

Posted by: KMichaels | October 18, 2008, 11:59 am 11:59 am

DEE DEE, let me correct your FALSE OPTIMISM, the polls you quoted that showed the biggest lead for Obama were five days old or older. During that time Obama took a pretty large DIVE in his numbers. And that was just in one weeks time. Watch for a further dive in the coming weeks, especially at the real election, which makes a liar of almost all polls, especially liberally funded polls. I wonder why so many liberal polls are often the ones with the worst record. Could it be they tend to lie or deceive or misrepresent? Sure, liberals believe in lying for the cause. That is proven fact.
As to that idiot Buckley, he based his belief that Obama was wise based on a book of Obamas that as it turns out was written by a ghost writer and not Obama. When real material that Obama had actually written came forward recently it was deemed amateurish at best. He is a very bad writer is what some said. There is also valid evidence that shows that Obamas book “Dreams from my Father” was ghost written by none other than Bill Ayers himself. Same style, same cadence, same word choice, same writing model verified by computer analysis.

For Smerconish and those who regurgitate B.O. (NO Colin Powell, for sure)’s assertation that Afghanistan is the Central Front on Terrorism.
WRONG.
If General Petreaus and Osama Bin Laden say Iraq is, you had better believe them, folks.
And by the way, obviously B.O. doesn’t consider Israel to be an ally, having hired the most pro-Hamas foreign policy team ever assembled by a U.S. Presidential candidate.
Zbig Brezinzski, Rob Malley, Samantha Power, Rashid Khalidi, Tony Lake, Susan Rice, Merrill McPeak, Dennis Ross, Daniel Kurtzer and Aaron David Miller.
Not one of them a friend of Israel, an ally. But Zbig, Sam, and Rob love the Palestinians and would even deploy U.S. troops against Israel in favor of the Palestinians.
Ross, Kurtzer, and Miller would be sent over to cajole (read: coerce) Israel into more surrenders.
Obama – he’d wouldn’t fight terror in Iraq or Afghanistan at all. But he would force Israel to surrender.

Obama supporters, you havn’t a clue. You’ll learn when it is to late. McCain has asked you to check there records. I did so and learned Obama has lied. This is serious and you’ve been to lazey to study the facts. Watch your Obama impliment a national health care program and withold it from anyone who opposes him. You have not seen John McCain bully anyone who opposes his campaign. Obama sends out the attorney’s to shut up those who oppose him. My gosh, look at what the media does. Look how Biden’s gaffes are ignored. Please take th time to study there records.

An Obama presidency equals an end to no-bid sweetheart contracts to war profiteers, a guarantee to the American public that our military involvement in Iraq will have a defined time horizon, renewed support and interest in the Afghani theater of combat (the real front of war on terror), a focus on the green economy that can only result in future opportunities for this country.
Hopefully several wrongs of the last 8-years can be reversed and the guilty put on display in the city square for their rightful flogging. The American public deserves their pound of flesh from the chicken hawks that set our righteous might against Iraq and squandered our opportunity for knocking down the terror dominos one-by-one. Apparently no one heard of Napoleon’s folly at Waterloo and once again history repeated itself… and we’re all stuck paying the $10 billion per month.

Obamabot claim: “Its a shame McCain and company have resorted to the ugliest, nastiest, and most dishonorable campaign”
Independent media studies show that Obama has run 10 times more negative ads against McCain than McCain has against Obama. That is a proven FACT.
Reality does not seem to sit well with Obamabots but time to face the facts.
Also, this was a hoot, showing the stupidity of Obama and his gross hypocricy. In the middle of attacking McCain he points out that McCain should understand that negative attacks are not what people want to hear. Then he continued negative attacks against McCain.
Obama is a dope and people that vote for him are even bigger dopes.

Welcome to the party, Mr. Smerconish.
What took you so long?
Many of the comments on this board are so ignorant, it can be very depressing. It remains a wonder how so many people can be tricked by the Republican nonsense-machine into voting against their own interests. Like those of you who are railing against Obama’s tax plan, even though almost none of you will ever be rich enough to see a tax increase under his plan.
Let’s not even talk about those of you who complain that he’s a Muslim (he’s not), or that he “pals around with terrorists” (he doesn’t) or that he doesn’t love America. He does, just as much as you do.
And finally, there’s that Sarah Palin thing. Don’t make us laugh by claiming she has more “executive experience” than Obama- as if being the governor of a state with far less people (less than 700,000!) than the city of Philadelphia prepares her to deal with the much larger and more complicated issues affecting a country of 300 million. Senators have to think about the whole country, and it really shows when you compare Palin to Obama and Biden. It is entirely obvious that this woman has simply never even thought about most of the issues affecting our country and our world- you can tell from her shallow, sound-byte rehearsed answers to even the simple questions she has so graciously allowed reporters to ask. If she’s so smart and knowledgeable, why can’t she answer OUR questions, the way all the other candidates do?
Sarah Palin alone would be more than enough reason to render the Republican ticket ridiculous.
Go-Bama!

Obamabot Chris says this: “An Obama presidency equals an end to no-bid sweetheart contracts to war profiteers”
One of the war profiteers is Haliburton that provided clean drinking water and other benefits to our US soldiers. Apparenly, the naive Chris figures that because American companies make money for supplying service to the US soldiers then they must be condemend. Chris, dimwit, exactly where should these services come from? Perhaps the enemy countries?
BTW, Chris, Clinton happened to use Halliburton on a no-bid contract in Bosnia. They were the proven best company so a bidding process would have wasted valuable time money and resources.
Chris, like most Obamabots has no clue about reality and simply repeats lies and misrepresentations that he has heard from lying Obama and his lying surrogates.

Why are we in Iraq?

Posted by: David | October 18, 2008, 12:33 pm 12:33 pm

KMichaels, there you go again.
Look, it’s fine if you think that this vague notion of “executive experience” is so important. If it is such an important requirement for being president, why isn’t Palin on the top of your ticket? John McCain has also been a senator, and has NO executive experience either. If you think that only governors or heads of corporations are qualified to be President, you’re welcome to that view. Good luck with that.
You say a lot of other things which make very little sense, which does not surprise me. The idea that a slightly progressive tax policy, the same one we had in the CLinton years, amounts to “socialism” is the kind of statement made by people who just don’t know what socialism actually is.
And if you want to talk about “redistribution of wealth”, I hate to break it to you, but that’s what’s been happening for the last 8 years. The wealth of this country has become more and more concentrated in fewer and fewer hands. Obama merely wants to restore the balance that we had during the CLinton years. As I recall, the United States was not a socialist country in the 90′s
And as for “killing the unborn”, maybe this will come as a shock to you, but most of your fellow Americans do not agree with your view that abortion is murder. Most of us are pro-choice, another piece of reality you might want to become acquainted with.

Given who these two parties nominated, I’m surprised that no one has realized that neither of the two parties is particularly enthused about winning in November. Oh, I’m sure these two and their close advisors want to win but I believe the party professionals realize that the next president risks becoming the next Herbert Hoover and his party will be 20 years in the wilderness as a result. As for the differences between them…please, to paraphrase Will Rodgers there’s not a dime of difference.

Why can’t Americans agree to disagree without all of the inciting comments and bigotry that I thought were gone. Obviously racism is stil alive in America and I’m ashamed of it especially since I myself and especially my Dad who is now 78 years old as you can imagine saw the worst of it; for my Dad who had to walk a mile everyday to school to catch the bus downtown because he couldn’t go to school in his town I say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!

Some of you don’t seem to know the difference between a progressive tax code and redistribution of wealth. We have always had a progressive tax code [I think] whereby the more you make the larger percentage you pay, broken into tax ‘brackets’. At the low end, as it is now, you pay nothing.
Obama will go further, and actually send checks to the low end, so their income will be boosted by the other’s income.
That is the definition of welfare, a concept Bill Clinton tried to rid us of, and which encourages laziness and parasitic behavior.

The GOP has really strayed from the Middle as shown by their refusal to accept anyone’s viewpoint other than those of Christian Extremists. I believe in small government, freedom of religion, and a balanced budget. Normally, that would mean I’d vote conservatively, but not this time. I’d be hunted down and strung up for being non-white, non-Christian, and non-NASCAR if the Republicans continue to be in office. We need Obama to win the election to bring some balance back to the USA. Ideally, we should have a third party that caters to those of us who occupy the Moderate spectrum that exists between both parties.
Besides, each President gets at least 4 years to show us what they’ve got. How anyone could equate 4 years with ‘ruining the country’ is ridiculous. Even in the economic downturn, there are many families who didn’t take subprime loans, lived within their means, and are not hurting.

There is no way I can vote for John McCain with Sarah Palin as his VP. Maybe I have high expectations, but I’d like the folks leading our country to at least have equal footing with me on knowledge of the issues. That’s not the case with Mrs. Palin. I disagree with the Obama platform on many, many issues. Especially domestically. But as much as I disagree with the Democrats, I can’t justify voting for a ticket with Sarah Palin on it. Therefore, I will vote Democrat for the Presidency and Republican for House and Senate seats.

The neocons have ruined the Republican party. I won’t have anything to do with their kind, nor the far right. This election is about regime change, plain and simple. Republican lead policies have driven this country into the dirt. Time for a change.

I did consider that, and was prepared to vote for McCain. Unfortunately, he chose Palin as his running mate. She brings her narrow-minded belief system into everything she touches. I believe that VP choice alienates most slightly-right-of-center voters. When she speaks of pro-American people as only being rural, religious, and insular that really makes me feel included (sarcasm). I believe in the following: Freedom of religion to me means creationism is out of our schools, global warming is something mankind can help reduce, and the USA should be united in purpose instead of divided. Palin is has been preaching to the Republican base, instead of trying to bring us all together. As VP or POTUS, she has to lead all of us…not just some of us.

Quin, thanks for the reply.
IMO, as vp she/he will not lead anybody. Or do much of anything. You are right, she’s a figurehead to bring along the more ‘conservative’ wing. But that’s it.
McCain is down with global warming.
She won’t affect what’s taught in schools, that’s already controlled by the leftist contingent that makes sure your 6th grader can put a condom on a cucumber, learns about homosexual marriage, and can barely read and write.
Education has much bigger problems than the beliefs of a vp.

KMichaels,
I am stunned that you are holding Haliburton up as a noble company providing service to our military in Iraq. Their “water” deeds done after no-bid contracts make what China sells us look like high quality stuff.

I have watched Micheal Smerconish on MSNBC for the past year or so, and he has always been fair to both sides. He is a smart guy who looks beyond party to find the value in someone’s ideas. It’s sad that the Republican party has sold itself to the extremist nuts and have gotten away from good political values that are good for the country. It is now appears to embrace a sort of fascisistic ideology that repudiates and denounces anyone who speaks out against it. Perhaps the party that is always frothing at the mouth about who is patriotic and what is patriotism, will understand that it is about the nation not about the party. Republicans should be proud that Smerconish had the guts to speak his truth even if it costs him the supports of some zealots who value blind allegiance instead of discernment.

As a former Republican(now Independent 40 something white male) I can understand where he’s coming from. It is the Republicans who have created this new brand of Communist Capitalism we now live under(trillions spent to socialize banks). They have doubled the national debt in 7 1/2 short years by 5 trillion. They have grown our government to unprecedented levels. They have made horrendously bad national security decisions(Iraq). And of course done just about nothing to change the social issues they hypocritically spout off about all of the time to get votes. They need to be taught a lesson by all good libertarian and conservative types out there so they can get their bearings back. I’m voting Obama too.

Posted by: HawkinCA | October 18, 2008, 1:58 pm 1:58 pm

Welcome to the club. The current Republican party serves two constituencies: (1) Christian fundamentalists who want church and state to be integrated, rather than separated, and (2) misguided neoconservative foreign policy types who are more interested in reshaping the Middle East than in vanquishing Al Qaeda and its affiliates. That McCain had to pick the laughably unqualified Palin as his VP to satisfy both constituencies says it all. The rest of us are not sheep, and we can’t in good conscience vote for the fraud that is Sarah Palin.

Posted by: frontstreet | October 18, 2008, 2:05 pm 2:05 pm

Rather to vote for the fraud at the top of the ticket?
You ‘Republicans for Obama’ contingent might consider this. Before the hoopla of the past year, McCain = moderate republican, Obama = most liberal democrat, Bush = hate him. McCain is not Bush. I will gamble McCain doesn’t die in office vs giving the pres and congress over to dirty Harry, Pelosi, and Obama.

You Christians, Jews, and Patriots are complete idiots. Your god is done, Obama is our God now. Get used to it. He knows what is best for all of us. The sooner you learn that the better off we will all collectively be. Power to the People (the poor people of course), forget all you morons who pay your taxes, feed your kids without gov’t help, and pray to your false God. There is a new revolution in this country and you and your stupid freedoms are finished. Silly republicans, you think your color is RED, you have not seen the shade of red that is coming. Workers of the Would Unite and stop this crazy freedom thing.

Here’s the main issue…dems talk a great game, but history is littered with the after effect of democratic policy. Just to name a few… democrats intro. Jim Crow, war profiteering in Vietnam (lady bird/Bell Helicopter), and not one but 3 terrorist attacks (USS Cole ’00, Khobar Towers ’95, World Trade Center ’93).
If conservatism equals hate, then liberal equals disaster.

Hey warguy, it’s a different day and age now. Slick Willy Clinton is the new face of liberals. When faced with multiple acts of terrerism he opted to sit back and get a BJ. When Syria offered to give him Bin Laden he said NO Thanks and instead signed NAFTA into law. Oh BTW Clinton was the one who signed into law the legislation that let banks make the very loans that are killing the financial institutions today. We’re not saying that the Dems haven’t had some great leaders, Just not lately. Oh and one more thing, LIncoln was a Republican.

Wow, all these Republicans shouting too loud in these replies. As strident as McCain-Palin. I’ve had enough of Bush-Cheney stridency. I, and most of America I suspect, will vote for calm and rationality, and that’d be Obama-Biden. A safe America with Obama, not a crackpot America under McCain-Palin-Bush!

Strange how the people who were so full of support for Bush now support the man running away from him..full speed.
Will all those who support McCain and insist Obama is such an evil person, tell me why McCain speaks of him as honorable and decent? . McCain thinks its honorable to “pal around with terrorists” Or does he just say this because he wants to score political points with such talk? Or is he just a liar or a coward?

Posted by: Vietnameravet | October 18, 2008, 6:29 pm 6:29 pm

I hope that developments like this are portents of a coming restructuring of our political system, beginning with the dissolution of the existing “Republican” and “Democratic” coalitions.
“Hardcore patriots” and evangelical Christians should be considering other political avenues besides continuing to serve the narrow financial interests (the “Mammonists”) that are at the heart of the Republican Party, and that have been taking advantage of them for years. Small-government Libertarian Republicans should also leave the GOP, and return to their natural home, the Libertarian Party.
Conservative “Blue Dogs” and DLC Democrats should divorce themselves from the more liberal “Wellstone wing” and ally themselves with moderate Republicans (like Chaffee, Specter, etc.) in forming a truly centrist, technocratic party. This would enable both groups to better speak their own minds without worrying about the other.
When the dust settles, we would end up with seven or eight distinct and well-defined parties, able to form coalitions on specific issues as appropriate. And while multiparty democracy has its own problems (just ask Italy), I believe that it will provide a great improvement over the current, obsoloete two-party duopoly.

If everyone ‘knows’ so much about Obama, other than the propaganda trickled out by his campaign, why has he sealed ALL of his records from:
Occidental College in CA.
Columbia University
Harvard Law School
as editor, Harvard Law Review
term as Illinois Senator
time as law professor in Illinois
clients at law firm in Illinois
He cites many of these as his resume of experience but he isn’t proud of any of his accomplishments that he would put them out there for public scrutiny? No articles he wrote for the Law Review? No thesis from Columbia or Harvard?
He even refuses to produce a valid, legal copy of his birth certificate or proof of citizenship regained after he was adopted (or claimed) by his stepfather in Indonesia. Such a simple and innocuous thing to present, a certified legal birth certificate, and yet he hasn’t in all this time since he has been running for POTUS. I find it very curious and troubling that he would possibly risk a Constitutional crisis if he is elected and then the truth comes out that he wasn’t eligible to run because he wasn’t a ‘naturalized’ citizen as it is spelled out in the Constitution. Do you REALLY know everything you should know about the man known as Barack Hussein Obama AKA: Barry Soetoro or just what he wants you to know before he is elected?

Posted by: Reno | October 19, 2008, 2:05 am 2:05 am

I am a supporter of thoughtful and forward-looking Republicans such as Richard Lugar and, at one time, John McCain. I am also a supporter of thoughtful and forward-looking Democrats.
I seriously considered voting for McCain this year – before he chose Palin, and before he demonstrated that he is incapable of managing a crisis and incapable of leading even his own campaign, much less our country.
Instead of LEADING, setting an example of ethics and good governance and forcing his campaign and party to go along, instead of uniting us as a country in order to address the dangerous challenges ahead, McCain threw away leadership and surrendered to the incredibly wasteful and destructive policies of his Rovian campaign advisors, to his zero-experience VP candidate and, more recently, to the ragged, rabid fringes of the GOP.
When John McCain did these things, he showed what kind of a leader he would be as president. And in doing so, he threw away my vote.
The contrast between Obama’s leadership, hope, thoughtfulness and effectiveness on the one hand, and the “followership,” divisiveness, anger, mindlessness and ineffectuality of the McCain campaign could not be more clear.
We will always remember Bush for his ability to bring the absolute worst out of everyone around him. McCain is heading down this track; Palin is already there. Obama, thus far, is exactly the opposite. As we observe his campaign,it is clear that through his forethought, his ability to learn from others and from his own experience, and his ability to disagree without judging others, Obama brings out the best in those around him.
These are the qualities we need to rescue the ship of our beloved United States from the vicious reefs on which it has run aground under Bush and Cheney.
Thank you, Mr. Smerconish, for endorsing Barack Obama. I am sure you will be attacked by a pack of rabid and angry GOP partisans. But you did the right thing.

Posted by: WS | October 19, 2008, 3:02 am 3:02 am

Hi Reno: I don’t know McCain or Palin either, so my not knowing Obama isn’t going to bother me any. However, I have been exposed to the policies of all the candidates, and that’s what I’m going to vote on. If the allegation that he’s not even eligible to be POTUS is true, then so what? The Constitution is pretty specific about who can be POTUS, so he’ll be removed from office, and Biden will step in. Sounds like the Constitution has this dilemma covered.
I’m more concerned that the Republican party has become a shadow of its former glory. It caters to its extremist members without trying to connect to the moderates, who make up the vast majority of the country. We’re left to vote for Obama because we feel ‘included’ in his plans, whereas the Republicans appear to include only xenophobic Christian Extremists. It used to be, in Reagon’s time at least, that you could be Republican and not fanatically religious. You could still be a likable Republican. Look at Michael J. Fox’s character in Family Ties, as an example.

LOL @ the person citing terrorist attacks that happened during Democratic administrations as if ***9/11*** didn’t happen while Bush was in office. The selective reading of history by right wingers would be comical if it wasn’t so destructive.
And wasn’t Reagan in office when he cut and ran out of Lebanon after 200+ Marines were blown to bits? Yup, sure was.

As a resident of the Philadelphia Suburbs, I can vouch for the fact that Smerconish will take more heat for this choice than anything that he’s done in his career..For the most part, voters for Obama fall into 2 camps: 1. The Obama supporters who see the candidate as the “transformational” figure that was referenced by Colin Powell.. 2. The reluctant Obama supporters who have been pushed towards him by McCain’s own actions and temperment…..I believe that Smerconish (like Powell) believes in the upside of Obama…He would have loved to see McCain select Tom Ridge who is representative of the type of Republican suburbanites here respect..He likes Obama’s temperment (certainly not his policies) so he needed McCain to be the McCain of 2000..Make no mistake, McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin has given Moderates reason to pause and say “why not go for hope?”…This is the reason why McCain is down double-digits in Pennsylvania. The population growth AND the votes, reside in the Eastern part of PA….The GOP will not win PA this year. There are simply too many “Michael Smerconish Republicans” here.

Stop it already with the nonsense I mean now its about Joe the Plumber oh please. John Mac and the rest of you nut jobs need to find a message and stick to it period Mac never denies wanting to give a 300 billion credit to the big boys and we’ve seen where that has gotten us over the last 8 years. Only the dumbest doornails in the building (i.e., the GlenBeck-RushLimbauh-SeanHannity listeners) will claim that Smerconish has ulterior motives. I listen to all four (Smerconish, Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity), and Smerconish is the only who has a rational, clear-thinking, civil approach to his callers. He actually LISTENS to all points of views and succeeds in fleshing out progress among conflicting thoughts and controversies. He doesn’t hang up or talk over people (ahem, Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity). Put BLH together, and all 3 of them couldn’t hold a candle up to Smerconish’s clear-thinking, reasonable views or democratic debate.

The traitors and turncoat so called Republcians like Smerconish and Powell who will vote for Obama were never really R’s. Remember that cons & R’s think while libs and D’s feel. Their arguments and points for Obama are specious and hold no substance or water. They are rather laughable based on truth and the facts. What about those who left the Democrats because it’s gone so far left and have politicized national security as they’ve done these past 7 years ? I did not give 4 years of my life for this country so that it can be led down the wrong path by a socialist left wing neophyte politician who’s best attribute is to be a smooth talker. May God help this nation and the stupid suckers who buy into his B.S. if Obama is elected. Also look out for Gov. Palin and LA Gov. Bobby Lindal in 2012 and beyond. Reading these comments, the left and liberals are so tolerant…NOT!!! America will always be Right!

Re: Paul C. The point of multi-party democracy is that the politics of the country ebb and flow. Different ideas come to the fore, and others fall to the wayside. Blind devotion to party instead of country seems more rabid with the ‘Right’ than with the Liberals on this board. At least the pragmatist Republicans like Powell and Smerconish understand that sometimes a party has better ideas than the other. They certainly aren’t saying ‘all Democrats all the time,’ and they also aren’t saying ‘all Republicans all the time.’ Sounds like tolerance to me, and I’m glad people like you gave some years of service for that kind of balance.

Agree with most of you, particularly jerzy in the comments “Only the dumbest doornails in the building (i.e., the GlenBeck-RushLimbauh-SeanHannity listeners) will claim that Smerconish has ulterior motives. I listen to all four (Smerconish, Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity), and Smerconish is the only who has a rational, clear-thinking, civil approach to his callers”.
And yes Smerconish, like many other GOP including the High profile ones who endorse Obama, did so after in-depth and intelligence analysis. They were informed following up Obama. The “dumbest” ones were blinded by their racism and ignorance. By the way racism=ignorance. So I will just say the dumbest and ignorant couldn’t help much. It’s Sooooooooooo sad in 21st century and in this great nation. We deserve better than that. Thanks God this is only applicable to few!!!

I often find Republican rhetoric projective in its attacks. Accusing or classifying the Democrats as this or that, when in reality it they themselves that are guilty of it. Saying that Republicans are “Thinkers” and that Democrats are “Feelers” is a new one to me. If that’s true, then why are the Republicans so ANGRY?

Posted by: Jonus | October 21, 2008, 12:55 am 12:55 am

The leftist political advocacy group ABC asserts: “Conservative Talk Radio Host Backs Obama”. “Conservative”? “Michael Smerconish”? ROTFLMAO!!! Smerconish is a “conservative”, and I’m an ivory-billed woodpecker. Smerconish is as “conservative” as other non-conservative, non-Republicans media darlings David Gergen, Andrew Sullivan, David “Gergen” Brooks and Kevin Phillips. Like the above mentioned non-Republicans/non-conservatives, Smerconish is always alleged to be a “conservative” by the useful idiots of the Washigton press corps in their lame attempts to pretend to have some balance, while at the same time every thing he says is identical to any run-of-the-mill boilerplate leftist. On top of that, the poor fool is an utterly insignificant irrelevancy.

Michael Smirconish is a phony conservative. When he first came on the air in Phila., he claimed to be to the right…..Bush 41 speech writer, etc…. After awhile, callers noticed his left-wise leanings, called in, and confronted him on it. He denied it, and after awhile, cut off callers who said the same about him. He has been heading left ever since, as his appearance on Clinton News Network and PMSNBC. He also appeared on Glenn Beck, and I hope that someone has set Glenn straight about him. No big loss for Mc Cain.

I started listening to Smerconish in ’98 and stopped listening to him in 2000. As his topics became more and more boring I started finding myself disagreeing with his views more and more and not just on a political level. The fact that he backs Obama shows that he is completely ill-informed and has possibly been payed off by the democrate-propaganda machine. Any sane person will vote for McCain. You don’t gamble with America and put everything good it stands for on this one bet!! ‘That one’ (Obama has serious character flaws! Look at the people he has befriended. Can you imagine what his cabinet is going to look like??? Farakhan will be visiting the White House regularly. If Smerconish is looking forward to an Obama-Pelosi-Reid Administration, then he is more mentally ill than I realized!! I won’t be there to hear him cry on the radio when Obama’s socialist wrecking ball is hitting the country hard, because I’ll be listening to people with a real brain like Rush and Hannity. Smerconish has been fooled by people like Michael Moore!!!

Posted by: birgitte | October 22, 2008, 9:56 am 9:56 am

All of Michael’s points were very weak to make a decision for President, which makes me believe he has to be pandering to his multiple liberal friends and jobs on MSNBC and CNN. To make your decision on the VP choices of the candidates is pretty ridiculous unless one they picked Michael Moore or Sean Penn. The person Michael wanted was Tom Ridge and he is out campaigning for McCain.
What’s most ironic is he believes Obama will be okay as President with no experience and questionable associations over the years. His belief that Joe Biden is better pick for VP than Sarah Palin is even more ridiculous. If Sarah did become president, she would have a McCain cabinet already in place along with political advisors that would assist her in the transition (Obama with far less experience will not have that luxury). With her executive experience as mayor and governor (far exceeding John’s, Joe’s and Obama’s), she would make a better President than all of them.

Posted by: Tundra | October 23, 2008, 10:33 am 10:33 am

Michael feels catching Osama Bin Ladin is the end all for a Presidential candidate. The candidate he chose was Obama who said he would go into Pakistan if necessary to get him. I’m not sure attacking a weak and fragile government that’s working with us to a point; with a Muslim extremist population harboring terrorists; with a pretty good military which allies with Muslim extremists and has access to nuclear weapons is really a good idea.
I guess this is what Joe Biden said the other day when he said Obama will be tested in his first six months in office. Invading a third Muslim extremist country that harbors terrorists and has nuclear weapons would bring a big test to the Obama Presidency. We would be in conflict with a next door neighbor to China and I’m sure you all remember what China’s response to us was when we advanced to far North into Korea.
The war in Iraq and the war in Afghanistan are two separate issues, but yet are accomplishing the same results, no attacks on US soil. Eight years later the 3,000 deaths in the US from terrorism remains the same and the man responsible for those deaths is hiding in the mountains of Pakistan. Over 90% of Al Qaeda’s leadership in 2001 and their replacements have been killed or captured. The British spent decades in Afghanistan in the 19th century and suffered heavy casualties before leaving. The Russians spent a decade in the 1980’s and got there butt kicked before retreating out. I’m in no rush to get Osama especially when he is hiding in very dangerous mountainous terrain and I’m okay with outsourcing the hunt to the Pakistani’s even though I don’t trust them.

Posted by: Tundra | October 23, 2008, 11:14 am 11:14 am

Smerconish is correct on his assessment of the Iraq War and Afghanistan. The Joint Chiefs of Staff held Obama’s view when the advised Bush that invading Iraq was a bad idea – at the time there was no Obama and no view – he was not on the scene. All of this common sense.
My decision on the President rests primarily on the candidate’s ability to ppick outstanding Department Heads and White House Staff – like Reagan did and Bush did not. Obama’s economic policy aadvisors are head and shoulders above McCains. THen you have the whimsical selection of Sarah – she has really been put in a bad position. Finally – the Powell endorsement.

Posted by: Bob Drake | October 25, 2008, 12:49 pm 12:49 pm

Smerconish is an anomaly. He is a one issue talk show host. The only thing that matters to him is how an issue advances his career. Each position is calculated in this regard. I call this condition “Little Radio Host” syndrome. If you happen to listen to him for a week or so, Michael’s agenda begins with “How can I benefit in my talk show career form this headline?” His endorsement means very little. The only reason it is a blurb on the news at all is that he happens to refer to himself as a conservative talk show host.
