Independent GOP Group’s Ad Attacking Obama on Wright Includes Images of Obama’s Young Daughters

The National Republican Trust PAC tells reporters it’s putting $2.5 million behind this spot featuring Rev. Jeremiah Wright in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida.

"For 20 years Barack Obama followed a preacher of hate and said nothing as Wright raged against our country," the ad says, as reported by ABC News’ Rick Klein. "He built his power base in Wright’s church. Wright was his mentor, adviser and close friend. For 20 years Obama never complained — until he ran for president. Barack Obama. Too radical. Too risky."

The closing image in the ad is a table, presumably supposed to be in Sen. Barack Obama’s home or office, on which sit a wedding day picture, a photograph of Obama and Wright, and a family picture of Barack, Michelle, Malia, and Sasha Obama.

The idea seems to be to convey the notion that Wright was all but a member of Obama’s family. But many Democrats are surprised that the attack ad would include images of Obama’s 10- and 7-year-old daughters; usually families are kept far from these types of things.

Mudslinging politics grab the headlines for a day or two. Then reality kicks in.Public outrage at dirty tactics. Is the backlash from the public worth it? Surely there are more substantial issues out there, like the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman and life begins at conception.Abortion is wrong because it denies the foetus the right to live. The global financial crisis, world peace, climate change, the energy crisis etc. etc. The question is ” where do you draw the line?”. Errol Smythe.

Reverend Wright didn’t tell a lie sent that 4,200 American soliders to their deaths.
A good friend of John McCain’s told that lie.
Want to talk about who the candidate’s friend’s are? We can have that discussion.

McCain and Plain have now entered into complete sleazebag politics.
Obviously, they have nothing to offer America but accusations.
The adulterer, bribe taking McCain, his junkie thief wife, the lying misappropiating-ethics-violating running mate, and the husband who feels the governor’s office is for his personal vedettas have absolutely no way to claim ANY moral high ground.
It will be a glorious Tuesday when America slaps them in face next week in response to their low-brow campaign.

It’s unfortunate that John McCain wants to win this election by trying to divide this nation. Obama seeks to appeal to the best in us, and McCain tries to appeal to the worst.

Obama’s family is fair game because we don’t know anything about Obama’s past. Otherwise, why did you cover the Hawaii visit to his mother?
But Jake, your headline is misleading: it is just a family photograph with the daughters. As such, it is just incidental, not a slam of the daughters.

Selective indignation.
Why is it unacceptable to display Obama (D-ACORN) family given that he openly admits submitting his family to the services of the ravin’ reverend for two decades?
Ask yourself: If this was a conventional church, would showing the Obama (D-ACORN) family as regular attendees over two decades have been an issue? Obviously, no.

GOP National Republican Trust PAC. Please, please, please this is an outage to say the least. What cowards to wait until the last final days to pull a back of the head punch. All because John McCain and the republicans are down in the polls. What kind of people are you. Please don’t say you are Christians.

Posted by: rena | October 28, 2008, 8:39 am 8:39 am

The GOP will stoop to any trick to hold onto power, any lie, any theft. We do not need this type of immoral individuals to run and have control over our government to continue their policies for the wealthy, well-off and well connected.
Barack Obama never stated that redistribution should be from tax payers to those who do not pay taxes, that is a lie, deception and a fallacy. What he is talking about is “fairness” and opportunity for all. That there should be wealth for all, not just the special few, that is what spreading the wealth or redistribution of wealth really means.
Please be wary of the touch-screen voting machines. If your district uses one, be sure to confirm that the candidate you chose on the screen is the one that is checked off on the screen and not the other candidate.
In one Republican voting place in Florida the woman who ran the place said they STRESS absentee ballots for their contsituents and she had stacks of them on a corner table which had already been filled out and sent back. I got to thinking about that. Why would she Stress these ballots instead of people voting on the machines?

Granted, we didn’t get the whole story, but our leaders were also mislead and misinformed. Either way, we have still been protected since 911. There’s a lot to be grateful for here.

I guess McCain finally gave in and decided to go along with the program, well, he just put the last nail on his coffin. Obama camp was never fooled by McCain’s alleged integrity. Like Obama said “were not going to throw the first punch, but we’ll throw the last”

Obviously this is a good ad.
1. Obama (D-ACORN) himself described his and his family’s relationship to the ravin’ reverend over two decades. So, he brought himself and his family into the relationship.
The question is: Why would Obama subject his family to the rev. reverend for two decades? Sounds like extremely poor judgment on Obama’s part. No?
2. If Rev. Wright wasn’t such a crazed person, GD America, etc. would showing the family photo have been controversial? No.
It is the relationship that Obama had with the crazy Rev. Wright that has the leftists screaming. Why would Obama display such extremely poor judgement as to subject his family to Rev. Wright for two decades?
Is this the kind of extremist Obama would subject our Country to for the next four years?

Well, I hope a Democrat organization will air ads showing the Republican backer, John Hagee, calling the Catholic religion a “religion of whores” and John McCain not disavowing that comment. I’m sure many Catholics would be infuriated at that comment. Or better yet run the film footage of the witchdoctor/pastor a Palin’s church in Alaska casting the “witches” out of Sarah Palin (yes it was caught on tape)and if that doesn’t sent a cold chill down the spines of the undecided and the independents I don’t know what will. Let’s see how these two items play with the electorate, one an instance of Hagee saying his religious beliefs are superior and another showing a throwback to medieval times.
So if they want to fight dirty let’s give them a taste of their own medicine.

Bin Laden may not have been in Iraq, however, his terrorist group was. We have to also note that we will never know 100% of what is happening, never have, never will. This is not all from one party. This should have been handled from the beginning of this mess in the Clinton administration. I am a registered independent, not dem. or rep. I truly try to look at both sides. And, there are many many ads that the democrats have assaulted Gov. Palin and Sen. McCain. Its not just republicans. I’ve heard Sen. McCain set people straight when things are called out on Obama. First of all Marylou, don’t call his kids precious, save me your fake, phony A** cconcern for kids, i’ve seen your posts on this forum and others bashing his kids and wife at every chance that you get. you’re not fooling anyone. I mean no offense to any white person but i don’t think you have the fundamental ability to understand the legacy of slavery in this country. I am not preaching here but you and I, we have a different sense of history, a different sense of pride, because as much as i love this country, it was only in the 60s that I was being treated as an equal. So for you to be surprised at what Rev Wright said, knowing full well the history and struggle of that generation is just plain stupid, to say the least. And to somewhat tie this ideology to Senator Obama? this is desperate, this is what a losing team does when they know defeat is inevitable. When you wake up November 5th, and watch Senator Obama’s acceptance speech, please sit back, think and do let us know how your hateful little self feels. This country is ready for change, for fundamental change, it will happen. mark my words, it will.

The Obama campaign has more class than I do, but I’d love to see an ad of the guest speaker at Palin’s church claiming that Israel was subject to terrorists attacks because Jews refused to convert to Christianity. Palin’s pastor said she sat through that one.
We can couple it with an ad showing the African witch doctor laying hands on her and mumbo-jumboing about keeping the witches away while she runs for Governor. Not certain if the “witch ban” was only good for that election. It so, it could certainly explain a lot of things.

Pa voter – I could not agree with you more. As I white woman, I know what I have read in books and seen in movies etal. I never experienced the anamosity of white “Christian” people. I know that I feel embarressed and ashamed of “my people” when those clips from the sixties are shown. I have also recently been embarresed when hearing some of the rantings and hate filled rhetoric at particularly Sarah Palin’s rallys and speeches. I have never voted for a Democratic President but I have already voted for Obama. He is the candidate with more ideas and less hateful rhetoric.

Rev Wright spreads hate. Rev Wright cursed America from the pulpit. As for Obama’s children- the left accused Sarah Palin’s husband of insest.
** This is the issue with the Republican party. The Democratic National Committee didn’t print ads with John McCain’s or Sarah Palin’s children. In fact, Obama did stand up and say children were off limits. I haven’t seen any of McCain’s children in democratic ads. Secondly, the Republican party also keeps hinting or flat out saying in these blogs Obama is racist. Who is he racist against? When have I heard out of his mouth that he hated white or black people? It would be mighty hard if he rejected white people because honestly those are the people who raised him. His grandmother, and his mother and grandfather were all white. So to keep placing this blame on him insulting the fabric of his family, really shows the lack of character of the people who keep proclaiming it. & even though they keep saying it doesn’t mean its true. He’s half white and black but it shouldn’t matter. We should not elect people on the basis of their skin.
*As for Rev. Wright- Aren’t the Republicans the pot calling the kettle black? I live in Lynchburg, home of the biggest National church figure when he was alive, Jerry Falwell. As a person who lived here, you know the influence of the Falwells and how they’ve spreaded hate right on the television screen each Sunday on national tv. I’ve been sitting in the pulpit as he stated “the Liberals have ruined America and its values” spreading all the hate and lies along the way. The church is very conservative and instead of preaching the word of God {which is what I thought you went to church for} he spreaded a lie that is detremental to peace in America. John Mccain has been to Liberty University too.. does that mean he hates all Liberals and believes they are going to hell? I hope not because he’s voted liberal too!

It is not un-American to speak out about wrong by our government
Wright is also not racist. People have made decisions on a few second clip without investigating the total situation.

One sermon does not equal 20 years of hate, and it is only ONE snipet of ONE sermon. I know these Republicans think people are stupid and they can get away with this. However, if people want to find real hate-mongers, they should take a closer look at the Republicans, and what they have done to this country on so many fronts.

Is that the distinct odor of sheer desperation emanating from RNC headquarters?

Posted by: chuck | October 28, 2008, 11:21 am 11:21 am

It’s very simple…and again, those who don’t see, refuse to see.
Rev.Wright adhered to Black Christian Theology, and that theology is steeped in Marxism.
For black theologians, white Americans do not have the ability to recognize the humanity in persons of color, blacks need their own theology to affirm their identity in terms of a reality that is anti-black – “blackness” stands for all victims of white oppression. “White theology,” when formed in isolation from the black experience, becomes a theology of white oppressors, serving as divine sanction from criminal acts committed against blacks. Cone argues that even those white theologians who try to connect theology to black suffering rarely utter a word that is relevant to the black experience in America. White theology is not Christian theology at all. There is but one guiding principle of black theology: an unqualified commitment to the black community as that community seeks to define its existence in the light of God’s liberating work in the world.
The Obama’s spent 20 years in this church, and Obama writing in his book, that Rev.Wright was like family, then goes on to say he was never in church when he heard Rev. Wright espouse this theology? Bah.
It’s all out there. Obama is a socialist. Redistribution of wealth, is a socialist ideology. We are heading into unexplored territory, with eyes wide shut. The results in socialism are out there. People in Cuba, go hungry, and without. People in North Korea, go hungry, and without. People in Venezuela are really feeling the effects now, because oil is down in price, and that is their primary source for revenue…yet Chavez didn’t plan for his people. Now they go hungry, and without.
That will be our future. Socialism, and redistribution doesn’t work. History tells us this, yet some are determined to get their share.

Kind of like a democrat state employee illegally accessing information on Joe The Plumber the night of the last debate. By the way…this employee gave the max to Obama’s campaign. $2300. But that doesn’t look bad…does it.
Now the question is…is this woman willing to face a trial, and possibly jail time, or will she squeal as to who asked her for this info?
This was private info, and the press had a lot of it. Hmmmmm

The Republican Trust has budgeted $3M to run an anti-Obama ad featuring Obama’s former pastor and family friend of 20 years, the Reverend Wright.
The PAC is also soliciting small donations to allow the ad to run through election day in the critical swing states.
This is bad, so please do not visit The Republican Trust website and donate $10.00 to keep this ad in the air. It would be wrong. Don’t do it.

During his time on the board with Bill Ayers at the Annenburg Trust–Obama made sure that his own church (pastored by Jeremiah Wright) recieved more than $150,000 in funds.
I think a few dollars donated to expose the true nature of the relationship between these two men is warranted.

Why Obama and MSM is hiding couple of things. Voters and americans have right to ask for following..
1. Original birth certificate and nationality(Law suits pending?)
2. His school and harvard records
3. His all associations
4. who funded his campaign(George Soros?)
5. His state senate records
Voters need a confidence and trust before about who real obama is? The policies and behaviour is very much based on who the person is influenced from. Not how he talks superficially.

But when you see William Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn , Dr. Khalid al-Mansour, Rezko, ACORN all connected to him, and they all seem to connect to one another. When the dots connect like that, you have to ask yourself, “DO YOU REALLY THINK HE WAS BEING HONEST ABOUT HIS ASSOCIATIONS?”

Or the fact that some left wing supporters, running a cruel prank by putting Baby Trigg on ebay, and offering to sell him, for the starting bid of $40.
Or the female reporter that referred to Trigg as IT!
Or the disgust parlayed all over left wing blogs, when Triggs sister groomed him, at the RNC convention.

Why is it that all the campaign spinmeisters that continually stoop to new lows at the presidential campaign level always seem to be Repbulicans? Lee Atwater, Karl Rove, the crowd that slimed John McCain in 2000 in South Carolina (who have now been given new life under McCain and the GOP).
This isn’t some dirtwater state senate race, this is for the highest office in the land and these people have absolutely no moral compass when it comes to personal attacks that have nothing to do with the issues that affect the American people.

The origins of the Red Star are found in the Russian civil war and the end of the First World War. Those Russian troops fleeing from the Austrian and German fronts who found themselves in Moscow in 1917 mixed with the local Moscow garrison. To distinguish the Moscow troops from the influx of retreating Russians the officers gave out tin stars to the Moscow garrison soldiers, to wear on their hats. When those troops joined the Red army and the Bolsheviks they painted their tin stars red (for Communism), thus creating the original Red Star.
This is pertinent, because the footage of the Fox producer asking Bill Ayres questions outside of Mr. Ayres home…Ayres was wearing a t-shirt with a red star on it. Take a look at some of Obama’s signs, and clothing. There’s a 5 pointed red star on them.
Now convince me, he’s not a socialist, and doesn’t want to rewrite the Constitution of this country.

Now some disagree with that, and want their happiness, and wealth handed to them, so it’s fair. If some want “fair” go to nations that already have established this “fairness”. This is going to destroy this country, and so yes…I’m concerned. As for hate…not at all.

You’ve only heard one small part of one sermon by Pastor Wright. If you listened to the whole sermon you might get the context of the statements that have been pulled out of context in order to make a “negative” point. The eighth commandment (Lutheran / Catholic numbering) calls that “bearing false witness.”
If, and I say only if Pastor Wright were a racist that doesn’t make Obama or the entire congregation of believers at Trinity UCC racists even if you consider him “part of the family”. Having members of your family as racists does not make you a racist by any stretch of the imagination. I don’t think he’s a racist.
Obama and his family joined a church. They were married in that church. Their daughters were baptized by the pastor of that church. That’s how it is usually done in most churches. The priest or the pastor baptizes, preaches, and celebrates the Eucharist. The efficacy of the means of Grace is not determined by the faith or attitude of the clergy, it is God working through that means. On of our priests prays “may God’s Rord be heard, and only God’s Word” before her homily.
I have to admit, I did not notice the children in the ad until I played it a second time. I guess I was looking for moving images and not photographs.
This ad was run by an independent group and not by McCain. They said they were going to run it even though he had objected to using Pastor Writght against Obama. To bad they did, it’s just another case of using snipets out of context to create fear. Remeber, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. (FDR)

Broken Record!
Politics of Division, Fear and Smear don’t put food on the table. McCain should have listened to his friend Chuck Hagel:
[Hagel says that he told McCain that he believed the election would be close, and he warned against waging a vicious campaign of the kind that had defeated McCain in 2000. “Once you win, then you’re going to have to govern,” Hagel told his friend. “The Democrats are going to add to their numbers, probably significantly, in the House and the Senate. You’re going to be faced with a strong Democratic Congress. You are going to have to bring some consensus here, and the first thing you are going to have to do is reach out to the Congress—Democrat and Republican.”]

Most people have not listened to anything but Wright’s words taken out of context in short sound bites.
Anyone who has listened to the full sermons knows they were not white hating; the sermons condemned behaviors, not races.
The sermons condemned some behaviors of the United States, but not the United States.
In this case, it really is ignorance that makes people play the race card against Wright.

Posted by: pefros | October 28, 2008, 2:57 pm 2:57 pm

One time I visited an elementary classroom. The teacher was a bit annoyed with the class at the beginning of the day because of their behavior. She had taken the American flag down, rolled it up, and was placing it in the closet. I heard her say, “. . . and therefore I am putting the flag away and we won’t be saying the pledge of allegiance.” What did she mean by doing this? Was she telling her students that she didn’t believe in flying the flag? Was she telling them that she didn’t believe in saying the pledge? The kids knew what she was doing. I didn’t because I only heard what she was saying as I entered the room. I didn’t have the context.
Later she explained to me what was going on. She was trying to make a point with her students about freedom and the symbols of freedom by taking those symbols away. The students had been disruptive, disobedient, and disrepectful of one another. During the pledge they continued to talk, to visit, and not place their hands over their hearts. She told them that if these symbols had no meaning to them she would take them away rather than allowing them to be mocked.
Would you call her anti-American? Maybe some of you would. I wouldn’t. They had a healthy discussion of freedom, the flag, and the meaning of the pledge.
Context is important to understanding what is going on and what is being said.
Do you have the context of Pastor Wright’s statements that have been quoted so often to create fear and distrust?
Vote for Obama, I did already.

I feel this is completely relevant. I can not believe how many Americans will look the other way or make excuses for this behavior. It is clearly the combination of Obama’s relationships with Rev Wright, ACORN, Ayres,ETC. that clearly shows Obama’s poor judgement and character. This should not be tolerated by the Amereican people. How, many fortune 500 companies would hire Obama with such little experience? It’s just not done and for good reason. But some how we can try to justify hiring Obama with no executive experience to the highest office in the U.S. Why? Because he is a good speaker. He looks “presidential”. THIS AND OBAMA SCARE ME!

To me, John McCain does not look well physically, mentally or emotionally.
He looked dreadful during some of the debates – off balance and almost unhinged at times.
I will not be putting any of my fate into his hands.
And Sarah Palin has revealed herself as basically a soap opera character with little depth of intellect and a very one-dimensional, almost cartoon view of the world stage.
Again, I would not put any of my fate in her hands.

8 years of Republicans was enough. The electorate will be rightfully booting the Republicans out of office.

Obviously some of you prefer to muddle on in what you believe without checking whether what you’ve heard is true. Unfortunately you then go on to repeat the misinformation over and over—-that’s what is called “bearing false witness”—one of the Ten Commandments speaks to that—if that makes a difference.

Dearest Jeanie,
Did you not read Jake’s post?
“But many Democrats are surprised that the attack ad would include images of Obama’s 10- and 7-year-old daughters; usually families are kept far from these types of things.”
Dragging someone’s minor aged children in a personal attack ad is what I would say is “VILE!”
McCain has condemned these 527 groups in the past, but it seems he is awfully quiet about these smears this year.
But I must apologize, my dear Jeanie, I don’t have time to allay your worries about Obama today. You go ahead and vote for John McCain. I voted for him 8 years ago and I can assure you that after the experience, you wont have to wait long until you are completely disappointed by the man’s words and actions.
Maybe when this is all over we can double date with Sarah Palin and Joe the Plumber. ;)

JoAnn: how much executive experience do you think Abraham Lincoln had? What kind of executive experience do you think is necessary? What is the meaning of executive?
The root of executive is “execute”. Execute means to “carry out” as in “doing the work of” or “being certain something gets done”.
That dive was executed with precision. In that sense a diver has executive skills.

Also, whatever your impressions are of Illinois taxes and such, I’m not sure how you can blame Obama for so much when during all but 1 year of his service Illinois was run by Republican governors.

The nomination of Obama has left me feeling like I no longer understand the party or what it stands for.

It’s funny watching folks say Rev. Wright made racist comments towards Whites when he chastised America. Only a RACIST would think America=White.

Why would anyone trust an organization that spread hate and racism based on one single taped segment played over and over again. Obama has addressed issues, run a positive and uplifting campaign and somehow kept himself in check despite the despicable McCain and McCain supporter campaign which would seem to set freedom back 50 years. It is maturity and lack of bully attitude (aka “maverick”) that sets him as a truly presidential figure and world leader.

Look at it this way liberal Dems….
If McCain went to a church for 20 years and the pastor ended up being a member of the KKK, do ya really think the media would let him get away with it.
Obama silences any media that does not support him. Look what he did to the Washington Post, Dallas Morning News and another (Can’t remember)reporter this morning on his private jet. He kicked them off.
Why are Obama’s kids off limits but any republicans personal lives are wide open. Hmmm…
By the way I am an Independent.

Obama did not know how radical his preacher of 20 years was.
Obama did not really know or hang out with Ayers
Obama did not know his “Aunti” was an illegal and living in government funded housing.
Obama does know one thing: He knows how he will take our tax dollars and create change.

I just saw this latest act of desperation on the part of the Republicans. McCain is not a maverick — he is a patsy for the Republican-rove machine. If he was a maverick he would immediately denounce this race-baiting ad. But, we know he won’t because he is desperate to win. McCain has lost all of my respect and all credibility. He is just MORE OF THE SAME. All he has to offer is character assassination!

Nov 2, 2008 10:20 am…I just gave a donation to the National Republican Trust PAC.
Tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
Obama is not fit to lead o\my country

I’m a Republican, a Vet, an Entrepreneur, but I can’t support McCain because I WON’T support DIRTY POLITICS.
McCain is not a Maverick, he’s a LOOSE CANNON. Graduated 5th from the BOTTOM of his US Naval Academy class-#894 out of 899 – A Disgrace. McCain does not believe in Diplomacy nor is he capable of it. But the worst thing he has done BY FAR is to call a sitting US Senator a terrorist. This campaign Tactic has cost him ALL Respect that I did have for him.
A man who can’t face the issues and whose only chance to win is to Fan the Flames of Racism and Sling Mud, **Does Not Deserve To Be President**.
Palin? I still can’t believe that she’s Actually on the ballot. NO national Political experience (e.g., with Congress or the Federal Government), NO Foreign Policy experience (or even education – she didn’t know what the Bush Doctrine is, and that’s HER party …), NO military education, experience or knowledge.
The LEGACY of the 2008 Republican Party will be “Bad Candidate Choices and Negative Campaigning” that backlashed against the entire party.
It will be a sad day for Republicans tomorrow, and, I expect, a Democratic Landslide.
I know its too much to ask that the GOP LEARN from its mistakes … but next time (2012) can you at least REMEMBER how you threw away the election in 2008?
And Next Time, can we at Least have a VP Candidate who is Actually Qualified to be President? GOP 2008 has been an embarassment to ALL true Republicans.
