Informed by ABC News that She Owns Mutual Fund With Sudan Holdings, Palin Says She Will Divest

Informed by ABC News that she holds an investment in a mutual fund that owns shares in companies that human rights organizations say help the government of Sudan, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Friday said through a spokesman that she will divest from that mutual fund.

According to financial disclosure forms Palin released last week (read them HERE), Palin owns up to $15,000 in Legg Mason International Equities, which the McCain-Palin campaign specified is the Legg Mason International Equity Fund (LGIEX).*

That Fund owns shares in two companies the Genocide Intervention Network labels "highest offenders" because, in that organization’s judgment, they empower the government of Sudan at the expense of the country’s marginalized populations.

With citizens of the world absorbed with dire economic news, it may seem secondary to consider what companies someone has invested in, rather than their current worth. But human rights activists monitoring the genocide in the Sudan insist there is nothing frivolous about trying to convince individuals from investing in companies that help the government of Sudan. In July, the International Criminal Court’s Chief Prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, asked the tribunal for an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir on charges of genocide and war crimes in Darfur.

The McCain-Palin campaign said that Palin did not know of the holdings.

"It was recently brought to Gov. Palin’s attention that, despite what the Sudan divestment online database indicated, one of Gov. Palin’s mutual funds held less than 1% in companies doing business with Sudan," said McCain-Palin campaign spokesman Brian Rogers. "Gov. Palin will divest from this fund immediately, and is committed to doing everything she can to stop the genocide and atrocities in Darfur.

The Genocide Intervention Network issues a quarterly report, "the Sudan Company Report," which analyzes companies with Sudan-linked operations, and also has a mutual fund screening tool which determines whether mutual funds hold interests in any of those companies.

There is no information about the Legg Mason International Equity Fund in that database. But the information is available, and a further review of Legg Mason International Equity Fund’s holdings through Bloomberg LP indicate that the Fund owns holdings in companies considered to be among the “highest offenders": ABB and Wartsila Oyj.

ABB, a Swiss company, is involved in Sudan’s Merowe Dam project, a hydroelectric dam the construction of which has displaced thousands of families while largely providing power to government strongholds. Last year, because of related human rights abuses, the United Nations called on companies to cease operations on the dam.

Finnish company Wartsila Oyj has sold, maintained, and serviced power plants for use in oil projects in Sudan, which empower the government. As much as 90% of Sudan’s export income is derived from oil, which benefits its military operations.

You can see the Legg Mason International Equity Fund’s holdings in ABB Ltd HERE and in Wartsila Oyj HERE.

ABC News told the McCain-Palin campaign Wednesday that her mutual fund had investments in ABB and Wartsila Oyj. On Friday, the campaign told ABC News that Palin intended to divest.

A Democratic operative said today, "Less than four weeks before Election Day, we’re still learning about Gov. Palin — and apparently, she’s still learning disturbing things about her own finances. The question before us now is: What more will we learn about Gov. Palin as the public and watchdogs continue taking a fine tooth comb through her record and past?"

But the Genocide Intervention Network applauded Palin’s decision.

“The fight against the Darfur genocide must begin at home," said executive director Mark Hanis. "The Genocide Intervention Network and its partners have called on all presidential candidates to ensure that they do not have holdings in companies identified as ‘highest offenders’ in Sudan. We are pleased that Gov. Palin, and all of the major parties’ presidential candidates, have followed the lead of 27 states, 61 universities, and 20 cities in ensuring that U.S. investments do not support genocide in Sudan.”

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., Barack Obama, D-Ill., and Joe Biden, D-Del., hold no such investments, according to the Genocide Intervention Network.

In May, after being questioned by the Associated Press, Cindy McCain sold off more than $2 million in mutual funds whose holdings include companies that do business in Sudan.

The Obamas did the same in 2007, selling about $180,000 in retirement savings because it was linked to an oil services company that does business in Sudan, the Wall Street Journal reported at the time.

Palin, during the vice presidential debate, claimed that she had led the charge to divest Alaska’s investments from the Sudan.

"When I and others in the legislature found out that we had some millions of dollars [of Permanent Fund investments] in Sudan, we called for divestment through legislation of those dollars," she said.

A further investigation by ABC News, however, indicated that while Palin later came to support the bill, her administration initially opposed the bill, and stated its opposition in a public hearing on the measure.

"The legislation is well-intended, and the desire to make a difference is noble, but mixing moral and political agendas at the expense of our citizens’ financial security is not a good combination," testified Brian Andrews, Palin’s deputy revenue commissioner, before a hearing on the divestment bill in February.

A Republican legislator recently heralded Palin as a supporter of the legislation, despite that earlier opposition.

“Governor Palin’s mutual funds held less than 1%”
WOW JT, how explosive! Just horrible!
How about you take the magnifying glass and go hunt some stories on Dear Leader Barry?
Obama will give 95% of American working families a tax cut, even though 40% of Americans today don’t pay income taxes!
It’s called a “refundable tax credit.” It involves the federal government taking money from those who do pay taxes, and writing checks to those who don’t. Yes, yes, in the real world this is known as “welfare”
Obama will jumpstart the economy, and he’ll do it by raising taxes on the very businesses that are today adrift in a financial tsunami!
Obama will, with a flick of his fingers, show them how to create more jobs with less money.
Obama will now demonstrate how he gives Americans the “choice” of a “voluntary” government health plan, designed in such a way as to crowd out the private market and eliminate all other choice!
Can Obama demonstrate how his plan will differ from our failing Medicare program
all without raising the deficit a single penny! And he’ll do it in the middle of a financial crisis. And with falling tax revenues!
He will respect your Second Amendment rights even as he regulates firearms!
He will renegotiate Nafta, even as he supports free trade! He will.
Barry is a Marxist snake oil salesman.

Don’t blame Palin. She was too busy being mavericky to be trifled with incidental stuff like countries committing genocide. Besides, she doesn’t even know where the Sudan is.

It’s nice that Palin has to be informed of her own investments. This is the kind of careful, thoughtful, intelligent person America needs in the second highest elected office in the land. Oh wait…

Who is the real Sarah Palin?
Unless the media outlet does their job, we wont find out… but there are other news sources who are finding out and its not pretty. And they are the ones getting this information out to us, the public.
Palin does not deserve to be VP or a 72 yr old heartbeat away from the presidency.
She invokes hate and division. She is a pathological liar and a cheat.

“Obama will give 95% of American working families a tax cut, even though 40% of Americans today don’t pay income taxes!
It’s called a “refundable tax credit.” It involves the federal government taking money from those who do pay taxes, and writing checks to those who don’t. Yes, yes, in the real world this is known as “welfare”"
The refundable tax credit only goes to those who file and pay taxes. Right wingers are trying to be literal when Obama says 95% of Americans getting a tax cut he is talking about tax paying Americans. This is clear in his tax plan. But the right wing wants to use the word welfare so they lie.
“Obama will jumpstart the economy, and he’ll do it by raising taxes on the very businesses that are today adrift in a financial tsunami!”
Obama will not cut the corporate tax rate but he is not raising it.
Small businesses will be getting a 50% tax credit on their payment of health benefits (as opposed to McCain who wants to tax your company provided health benefits as income) and he will also eliminate capital gains on small business investment.
“Obama will, with a flick of his fingers, show them how to create more jobs with less money.”
Obama is talking abotu serious solutions.
John McCain? Well apparently he knows how to fix everything but is awaiting us putting him in office.
He knows how to fix the economy.
He know how to get America going again.
He knows how to get Bin Laden.
“Obama will now demonstrate how he gives Americans the “choice” of a “voluntary” government health plan, designed in such a way as to crowd out the private market and eliminate all other choice!”
Oh no! Allowing public health plans to compete on the market with private insurance is unfair because public plans overhead costs (based on Medicare) are 2 to 3% while private insurance is spending 15 to 25% on overhead. Advertising and executive bonus & golden parachutes don’t come cheap.
Who will cry for the poor Insurance companies? (Apparently Republicans)
“Can Obama demonstrate how his plan will differ from our failing Medicare program”
How is Medicare failing?
And why does John mcCain want to cut a TRILLION dollars from this program?

That particular fund is offered as a selection in many many 401K programs and some of the finest teacher, union and state retirement programs. The prospectus does not indicate anything relating to the issue of Sudan.
What is surprising is that Sen. Obama DIRECTLY owned shares in an oil services country that obviously exploited a third world country’s resources and people. Buying shares in that company was a conscious choice for Obama.

Can someone explain to me how sitting on a commission for 2 years and being governor of an oil producing state for 20 months makes one the foremost expert on energy issues in the nation?

A Republican legislator recently heralded Palin as a supporter of the legislation, despite that earlier opposition
******************************************* Boy they never seem to have a problem lying, even with these things that are so simple to verify.
Amazing, that they either believe Americans are totally ignorant or they just don’t care because they know their supporters will lie right along with them.

Agreed, this is non-issue. Most folks don’t invstigate the background of every holding in a savings plan.
However, the findings about ABUSE OF POWER are an issue.
After Cheney and Bush decided they were above the law, operated with impunity, and ignored subpoenas, wedon’t need yet another person who thinks they can use the office to pursue personal agendas.
The McCain campaign “pre-emptively” announced today that Palin is innocent.
Seems strange they need to tell us Palin is innocent if the investigation will prove no wrong doing on Palin’s behalf.
We ALL know why they released that information before the results come out right?

BUT…I am not running for Vice President of the United States. All of these issues should have been investigated and resolved before she joined the ticket. I know I would have dotted all my I’s and crossed all my T’s before accepting such a public office.

I smell another:
“I was for it before I was against it!”
I truly believe the candidacy of Palin will be more the unraveling of McCain’s campaign than the economy.
It was such (una)”bridged” arrogance for McCain to think he could put in the amateur when the game called for a highly skilled professional.
What competent candidate doesn’t talk to mainstream media? Only a small percentage of the electorate watches Fox. How does that get them votes? She is not being perceived as competent, even by some in her own party. And the last interview she participated in was just plain weird.
(And I’m not talking Katie Couric) It was with a conservative.
I try not to cast dispersions, but either McCain, didn’t care, didn’t know, or he’s a couple of brewskies short of a keg.
Palin was not, and has not been properly vetted, and it shows.

Todd Palin was a card-carrying member of the Alaska Independence Party until 2002.
During the 1970s, Mr. Joe Vogler founded Alaskans for Independence to actively pursue secession for Alaska from the United States. The Alaskan Independence Party quotes Vogler as stating “I’m an Alaskan, not an American. I’ve got no use for America or her damned institutions”.
In 2008, as governor, Palin submitted a welcoming video to the AIP convention in Fairbanks saying, “Good luck on a successful and inspiring convention. Keep up the good work, and God bless you.”
Just who is the REAL Sarah Palin?
Wants to make abortion illegal
Charges rape victims for their exam/evidence kits
Condones and practices killing wolves from planes, then rewards the torture by offering a $150 bounty for their severed legs
Just got a passport LAST YEAR
Is under investigation for abuse of power – for which subpoenas were issued and ignored by those close to her, sound familiar…Cheney?
Who is Sarah Palin? – a disgrace as a potential VP, and an insult to women and anybody else with half a brain.
Funny how McShame/Palin bring out the worst in us, and Obama/Biden bring out the best.

But soon, Palin and Chryson discovered they could be useful to each other. Palin would be running for mayor, while Chryson was about to take over the chairmanship of the Alaska Independence Party, which at its peak in 1990 had managed to elect a governor.
The AIP was born of the vision of “Old Joe” Vogler, a hard-bitten former gold miner who hated the government of the United States almost as much as he hated wolves and environmentalists. His resentment peaked during the early 1970s when the federal government began installing Alaska’s oil and gas pipeline. Fueled by raw rage — “The United States has made a colony of Alaska,” he told author John McPhee in 1977 — Vogler declared a maverick candidacy for the governorship in 1982. Though he lost, Old Joe became a force to be reckoned with, as well as a constant source of amusement for Alaska’s political class. During a gubernatorial debate in 1982, Vogler proposed using nuclear weapons to obliterate the glaciers blocking roadways to Juneau. “There’s gold under there!” he exclaimed.
Vogler made another failed run for the governor’s mansion in 1986. But the AIP’s fortunes shifted suddenly four years later when Vogler convinced Richard Nixon’s former interior secretary, Wally Hickel, to run for governor under his party’s banner. Hickel coasted to victory, outflanking a moderate Republican and a centrist Democrat. An archconservative Republican running under the AIP candidate, Jack Coghill, was elected lieutenant governor.
Hickel’s subsequent failure as governor to press for a vote on Alaskan independence rankled Old Joe. With sponsorship from the Islamic Republic of Iran, Vogler was scheduled to present his case for Alaskan secession before the United Nations General Assembly in the late spring of 1993. But before he could, Old Joe’s long, strange political career ended tragically that May when he was murdered by a fellow secessionist.

Is it just me or Is McCain endangering Obama? A sensible blogger on swamppolitics had this to say regarding the turn of McCain’s campaign now that he is losing in the polls. “There was always going to be a point of revolt and panic for a core group of Americans who believe that Obama simply cannot be president — because he’s black or liberal or young or relatively new. This is that point. As the polls suggest a strong victory, the Hannity-Limbaugh-Steyn-O’Reilly base are going into shock and extreme rage. McCain and Palin have decided to stoke this rage, to foment it, to encourage paranoid notions that somehow Obama is a “secret” terrorist or Islamist or foreigner. These are base emotions in both sense of the word. But they are also very very dangerous. This is a moment of maximal physical danger for the young Democratic nominee. And McCain is playing with fire. If he really wants to put country first, he will attack Obama on his policies — not on these inflammatory, personal, creepy grounds. This is getting close to the atmosphere stoked by the Israeli far right before the assassination of Rabin. For God’s sake, McCain, stop it. For once in this campaign, put your country first. ” I couldn’t agree more.

Well at least we know she doesn’t read her shareholder reports or the financial statements that come with her mutual funds. I wonder if she uses the same caution as Governor when reading financial reports for the State of Alaska? Probably not. In this time of financial uncertainty, it is imperative for one to be aware of their financial holdings, both as an individual and as Governor. This is yet another valid reason not to vote for the McCain/Palin ticket.

Isn’t that the problem with couples? It’s always the same sex. However, I agree with the idea of homosexual marriage. They should be miserable too.

I am voting on emotion (like 50%) of Americans, and that means character and judgement come into play, and record and service to EARN THE KEYS TO THE WH. You are so right. If obama is elected his government will finish the job, we will then be totally a socialist country. All he has is a ‘big mouth’ and he knows just what to say. How the people of this country could be so stupid is a mystery. So many good men and boys fought for our country and some died; how we can put it in the hands of someone so unqualified and unknown. Had rather know what I will be facing than face the unknown.

It is simply amazing that people will do anything to bring the best ticket for president down. How many people have money invested in mutual funds that might be doing business in countries not approved by the socialist (Democratic Party)?
Obama has funnelled tax money to his radical Trinity Church and his wife’s employer so she was given a super pay raise. Obama also supports ACORN who has been doing business by registering unqualified voters and forcing banks to lend to people who can not repay loans or mortgages. He has managed to earmark a million dollars a day for his fluff in his home town.
Lies, voter fraud and fear mongering is Democratic (SOCIALIST) way. Obama gotta win, any way he can. He has to redistribute America’s wealth. That is the CHANGE he wants. The Democrats are responsible for the current ecomonic crises. This statement is being repeated around the world. Watch CNN International.

Sounds similar to Obama’s ignorance of not knowing Ayers was a terrorist but showing up for a fundraiser at his house. remarkable. But lets ignore Obama’s ties to radicals. In a few years another dem will be running for president that was best friends with Timothy McVeigh. But the same idiots that don’t care about Obama’s associations would sweep that under the rug too.

The fund that you have quoted in this article is the Legg Mason International Equity “Trust” fund (LGIEX).

Hey ABC, how about some blogs on Obama and his 800K connection to ACORN. Surely, you guys have a lackey who can google this and get us a blog on it…. that is, if you care to look into the truth about Obamamessiah.

Posted by: where are the journalists | October 10, 2008, 2:24 pm 2:24 pm

In a sharply worded editorial on its Web site Thursday, the editors of The National Review — an influential bastion of conservative thought — derided the plan as “creating a level of moral hazard that is unacceptable” and called it a “gift to lenders who abandoned any sense of prudence during the boom years.”
Prominent conservative blogger Michelle Malkin went one step further, calling the plan “rotten” and declaring on her blog, “We’re Screwed ’08.”
So, you can no longer claim it’s only us “liberal” Obama supporters that are badmouthing the McCain/Palin ticket. This isn’t about past indiscretions (let’s not forgot McCain was involved in a very public scandal before and was admonished for his part but not prosecuted) because no one is a perfect angel. This is about the proposals, the platforms, and the state our country is in now. If people who are on “your side” can’t even believe this BS is no longer good for our country, why are you still trying to fight change? Why are you still yelling about rumors and speculation? This isn’t the time to be petty, this is time to get serious. Your money as well as mine is at stake: I don’t see the DOW and NASDAQ numbers separated by political parties. I’m sure the sheriffs won’t care or ask if you’re a Democrat or a Republican when they show up to kick you out of your foreclosed home.

It’s all a big fairy tale hearing the revival speeches by Obama and the party disassociation by the maverick McCain. We can either jump right into the sell out of the US with Obama or wait for the geezer to go wacky/croak. Neither of them were my candidate of choice.

If Gov. Sarah Palin, by John McCain’s estimation, “knows more about energy than probably anyone in the United States of America,” then why is she getting such basic facts about our nation’s energy production wrong?
At a townhall event in Wisconsin on Thursday, Palin was asked by a concerned questioner whether it was true that the United States was shipping 75 percent of its Alaskan oil overseas. She responded by proclaiming it impossible, since Congress had put strict bans on the amount of oil and gas that America could export.
Not so. As the Associated Press reported:
No Alaska oil has been exported since 2004, and little if any since 2000, according to the Energy Information Administration and the Congressional Research Service.
And Congress has never imposed outright bans on oil exports. Congress prohibited exports of Alaska oil in 1973 when the Alaska oil pipeline was built. But that ban was lifted in 1996 when there were large volumes of Alaska oil coming down from the North Slope and U.S. demand was soft.
The Alaska ban has never been reinstated.
Unfortunately, for Palin, this was not merely an inconsequential misstatement but rather another in a series of errors when it comes to discussing what is supposed to be her policy strength. For a while on the trail, the Alaska Governor was fond of declaring that her job – as head of state – “has been to oversee nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of oil and gas.”
That too was incorrect. As the Washington Post’s Fact Checker noted:
Alaska is the ninth largest energy supplier in the United States, accounting for a modest 3.5 percent share of the nation’s total energy production…
Data compiled by the Energy Information Administration contradict her claim that she oversees “nearly 20 percent” of oil and gas production in the country. EIA data, Alaska accounted for just 7.4 percent of total U.S. oil and gas production in 2005…

Proud liberal, here, and I’m going to shock the heck out of wing-nuts. Palin has done the right thing by agreeing to sell her shares of this Mutual Fund. She should not be judged negatively for having held that fund to begin with. It’s been correctly noted that many of us may, indeed, be invested the Sudan without even knowing it. Now that we’re all taking a bath in the stock market with our 401(k)’s and paying more attention, this is probably a good time for all of us who do not support genocide to take a closer look at our investments and make sure the funds we hold aren’t doing business with the bad guys.
I don’t support Palin as a VP or president, but I’m not one to cry foul when there isn’t one. In this case, and this case only, her hands are mostly clean.

The economy is in a horrible state. To continue with the policies which precipitated in this horrible situation is beyond comprehension. If America pursues the path it is on, history will record it as one of the most disastrous mistakes in the history of the country, if not the world. Americans must put aside petty distractions and make decisions that they know will help pull the country out this financial abyss. It is surreal that so many Americans are devoting their time to petty matters that will have no significance after the election is over. The economy will persist to be a problem for a long time to come.
Those who seek to spread divisive propaganda at a time when the nation is suffering as it is now are not serving their country, nor do I think in the long run they are serving their own narrow interests. It is in no way an example of the idea expressed by the motto: “Country First.”

A majority of Americans do NOT know what their mutual funds or 401K’s hold as per company, they are usually handled by investment firms. My husband gets a monthly statement, with very little detail. It’s just too incredulous. I keep telling myself that the media will do it’s JOB to protect Americans from this very dangerous man, but I have little hope that they will remember their ethics and code of honesty. As temting as it is, I cannot fault someone for not knowing where all of their mutual funds are directed. I just don’t think it is fair or relevant for either side. At this point, it is like kicking a puppy. And she is so worried about Obama and Ayers when she has her problems to deal with such as Troopergate and this investment in Sudan. And does Obama waste any of his time worried about her? LOL Like they say in the south “Be careful when digging ditches for someone or else you will fall in.”

I wonder why McCain would think it was such a great idea to ask Palin to be his VP when she had an ethics probe being conducted against her, she is not as qualified as any of the other people he could have asked such as Romney (who could be a great use with todays economic troubles). Was it to borrow Palins own words about Obama “Blind Ambition” that caused McCain to pick her?

The real Sarah Palin is a self serving Sarah Palin, documented quite well by the Troopergate report.

I’m more concerned about her abuse of power and her narrow world view – she needs to be sent back to Alaska to get some more OJT to fully develop her Tom Delay style persona.

What a worthless article. Most people who buy mutual funds do so with a financial advisor’s advice, and on the basis of the fund’s style (large-cap vs. small-cap, domestic vs. international vs. emerging markets, value vs. growth, etc.) and performance. Occasionally, if the fund holds recognizable companies, the advisor will make a mention of them as an example. But most people don’t know what companies are held by the fund, as they can be quite numerous. But even if they knew the names, they’d have to invest tons of time to find out what those companies do. That doesn’t even take into consideration the fact that the companies held by a mutual fund change over time.
So yeah, this is absolutely pointless.

Other countries that do business with the Sudan include General Electric, Coke, Pepsi and many more household names. Most use forign distributors (French in many cases) to get around the US scantions.
How many mutual funds have holdings in companies that operate in sudan?

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, deployed troops are putting their money where their mouth is: they’ve given four times as much money to Obama as McCain.
“Everyone I talk to wants change but on base you can’t say certain things. At a bar or a party, everyone tells me they’re voting for Obama,” said Thomas Singleton, 27, a former military telecommunications specialist who was speaking to OffTheBus outside the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Perched on a hill in Quantico, the museum’s stunning roof line can be seen for miles. Its design — a 200-foot tilted mast atop a huge glass atrium — was inspired by the famous Iwo Jima flag raising of World War II.
“My military friends are tired of being lied to,” said Singleton. “They’re told to deploy for six months, but it ends up being a year. And when they come home, they can’t find a job. One of my friends is staying in the Army only because he can’t find a civilian job.”

And I don’t own mutual funds, I buy foreclosures with my money.

I have become a staunch supporter of Obama/Biden in light of the current Republican rally insanity & pick of VP Palin, because those folks truly scare me.
But, Palin divested the mutual fund, end of story. I don’t agree with her hatemongering politics, but she divested. Good for her.
