LIVE DEBATE BLOG
That’s it for tonight folks — two down, just one to go. Check back for more analysis tomorrow morning, as always, in The Note.
9:28 pm CT: Before the dizzying spin begins — I find it hard to declare a winner. Tie goes to the frontrunner, perhaps, in the conventional wisdom? I don’t see McCain hitting things that shake it all up.
9:27 pm CT: From Ron Claiborne: For those who care about debate style: Obama watches McCain raptly whenever McCain speaks. McCain again is having a hard time looking at Obama when he speaks.
9:25 pm CT: McCain makes actual physical contact with an actual real-life voter.
9:23 pm CT: Why do politicians like saying "petrodollars"? And who cares whether candidates think Russia is an "evil empire"? Red Sox fans think the Yankees are an evil empire — and, as it pains me to point out, the Yanks haven’t won in a while.
9:17 pm CT: I’m not seeing any big breakthrough moments — McCain is better relating to the audience, but Obama is having what qualifies as emotional connections. Maybe it’s the format — but I’m not seeing anything that changes any trajectories so far. (Anyone else ready for this format to be retired?)
9:14 pm CT: From a colleague: No winners in this debate. But there is one loser…Tom Brokaw. What is he doing here?
My take — he’s enforcing silly rules, or trying to. Then asking follow-ups that tend toward less light, not more.
Watch for this line from GOP mouths — this wasn’t a "real" town hall, and that’s why McCain didn’t "win."
9:12 pm CT: Getting some e-mails on something I missed earlier — McCain didn’t really engage on the "sacrifice" question, while Obama did, evoking the post-9/11 period.
9:11 pm CT: Then McCain attacks Obama for being a hawk — "Sen. Obama likes to talk loudly."
9:10 pm CT: "We will kill bin Laden, we will crush al Qaeda." Those were Obama’s lines.
9:08 pm CT: I can’t imagine a single voter caring about the debate that just played out on Iraq. Not that it’s unimportant, just that it’s played out.
9:06 pm CT: The word "Ayers" has not been uttered tonight. Neither has the word "Keating."
9:05 pm CT: A friend who’s keeping track notes that, more than an hour in, there have been six questions from people in the auditorium. Six.
9:03 pm CT: ABC’s Ron Claiborne, on the "That One" line: "Tonally, seemed dismissive, maybe even contemptuous. It could provide Obama camp with an opportunity to onsinuate more than that, even racially-charged, a version of the phrase "you people." Obama press people quickly noted it in e-mail to reporters."
They did. One Obama supporter e-mails me to call it his "get off my lawn" moment.
9:02 pm CT: Obama finds a good stride talking about McCain’s "wrong judgment." This was one of his better moments at the first debate, too.
Also, John McCain is taking a lot of notes. Seems like he’s scribbling something every time the camera cuts to him.
8:59 pm CT: McCain: "America is the greatest force for good . . . " I don’t think many listeners would disagree. I don’t know, I legitimately don’t, whether people want to hear about it at this precarious time. Maybe McCain is onto something — it reminds me of Romney at his best in the primaries. But it does muddle a bit the I’m-not-Bush message.
8:58 pm CT: Don’t hate on Delaware — that’s where Biden’s from . . .
8:56 pm CT: An emotional connection, by Sen. Obama, on healthcare — talking about his mother’s struggles with insurers toward the end.
8:55 pm CT: Is health care a privilege, a right, or a responsibility, Brokaw asks. And America answers: Who cares? I just want to make sure I have it, for less money.
8:53 pm CT: In the un-green race to pass out as much paper as possible, the McCain campaign is destroying the Obama campaign once again. Aides scurry about handing out paper copies of the press releases every reporter gets via e-mail, several times over, usually. No Obama paper, as in the previous debates.
8:50 pm CT: Should healthcare be treated as a commodity? Obama talks about what an important and vital issue this all is — and then . . . waiting . . . waiting . . . waiting. "We have a moral commitment as well as an economic imperative to do something . . . " This might have been a good opportunity to score on an emotional level, not a policy one.
"Do the math," McCain says on his healthcare plan. (Because he didn’t right there.)
8:48 pm CT: Who voted for it? "That one!" McCain said, pointing, with that weird smile he sometimes cracks.
8:46 pm CT: Brokaw a stickler for the rules — how much time being wasted trying to enforce them, though? Enough for an extra question?
8:43 pm CT: Almost halfway in, it’s McCain attacking — with a smile. He’s the happy warrior so far, trying to stay optimistic while drawing the distinctions he needs to. No big game-changers yet, though.
8:42 pm CT: McCain calls for an up-or-down vote on entitlement reform. Sounds like something real there.
McCain: "Sen. Obama voted 94 times" to raise taxes. "That’s his record." That’s a laughable charge and McCain knows it.
8:41 pm CT: From ABC’s Bret Hovell: McCain continues to attack Obama in almost every answer and Obama either responds or, sometimes, doesn’t. But Obama’s not putting McCain on the defensive at any point.
8:39 pm CT: Meanwhile, are all these questions turning into an argument over who’s going to raise your taxes?
8:38 pm CT: Obama can tell tired jokes too: "The Straight Talk Express lost a wheel on that one."
8:37 pm CT: Brokaw slaps down Obama’s attempt at a follow-up to the follow-up.
8:35 pm CT: Obama’s tax proposals "like nailing Jell-O to the wall." I haven’t tried, but that would sound difficult. Cute line. Then the meat — Obama’s tax hike is a hike on small businesses. "I’ve got some news, Sen. Obama — the economy is bad."
(Waiting for the oppo research that points out McCain saying the "fundamentals of our economy are strong.")
More from the rah-rah McCain: "Let’s not raise anybody’s taxes."
8:33 pm CT: Obama raises the "revenue side," gingerly. That means taxes. He’s engaging on the issue here, to his credit on an intellectual level. This is a key bridge for him to build — he needs voters who are hearing a whole lot about his tax hikes to think about this as leveling the playing field, not making people empty their pockets.
"Those of us like myself and Sen. McCain who don’t need help" — that’s similar to a Kerry line in 2004.
8:29 pm CT: McCain doesn’t get real specific on cuts either — in fact, tonight he just proposed a new spending program inside the Treasury department at the same time he’s talking about his "spending freeze." Did you feel that thaw? By the McCain campaign’s own count, this new program would cost $300 billion. With a B.
"We’re not rifle shots here. We’re Americans!" McCain says. (Sorry, but this one seems forced.)
8:25 pm CT: "We’re going to have to prioritize," Obama says. Top of the list is energy, and energy independence. "And we can do it." Health care grabs No. 2. Then No. 3 is education. But wasn’t the point of the question what you can’t have?
8:23 pm CT: ABC’s Bret Hovell points out that that is indeed a new McCain proposal: To have the Treasury department have the ability to buy up struggling home loan mortgages and renegotiate them at the new value of the home so that people can make their payments.
An intriguing debate tactic, to have that in his hip pocket.
But, from ABC’s Ron Claiborne: How is this different than his HOME program to buy up subprime mortgages taken out since 2005 by "credit worthy’ homnowners facing foreclosure and give them a new loan, fixed, based on current home value? He says 400,000 people would be eligible for that. Is he saying now — can we infer — he’s talking about ALL troubled loans, a much bigger program? If so, that would be a change from his position last spring when he said people who got in over their heads and shouldve known better and speculators shouldn’t be helped.
8:20 pm CT: Again, that would be McCain saying a voter’s name, instead of starting an answer, "well, look." For what it’s worth. And McCain calls out for bipartisanship — this is reaching to the center, really a key goal of his tonight. Your contrast: Obama blamed George Bush, McCain said bipartisanship. WAIT — spoke too soon — this was really to set up a he’s-a-liberal attack.
8:19 pm CT: Obama says there’s "blame to go around," and then applies it in one direction. "Sen. McCain voted for four out of five of those George Bush budgets," he says. (That was an unprovoked jab, it seems.) Then comes more laundry list out of Obama, nothing really outstanding there.
8:18 pm CT: So far, both are playing populist cards. In the early discussion on the economy, I don’t see either one distinguishing himself on the big question of the moment.
8:17 pm CT: Obama says he wants to "change the culture in Washington." That and other bromides are sure to fix everything, right?
8:14 pm CT: Obama needs to correct McCain’s statements, "not surprisingly." (Was that necessary?) But he’s not staying above the fray — this isn’t above-it-all Obama tonight early on.
8:11 pm CT: Now both candidates are touting the bailout package. (And why is McCain still talking about how he suspended his campaign for this.)
First attack — Senator Obama and his friends, and his cronies, who defended Fannie and Freddie. This one is a bank shot, sort of hard to explain (lots of meanwhiles). But it looks like McCain is jumping at opportunities tonight, even when they’re not directly offered. "Others took a hike," McCain says.
And — McCain right up in voters’ faces. Really moving in close.
8:08 pm CT: "Not you, Tom." (What did Brokaw do to deserve that dig?) McCain drives the right NUTS by mentioning Warren Buffet for treasury secretary. (They’ll be much happier about Meg Whitman.)
Obama: "Warren would be a pretty good choice." So far, the Sage of Omaha is winning the debate.
ABC’s Jennifer Parker points out that McCain is mentioning voters’ names — strong connections with the audience.
8:07 pm CT: McCain is roaming the stage, playing to his strength. And comes out with a policy proposal to help people stay in their homes — a strong lead answer, to have a meaty response to that. McCain looks confident early.
8:06 pm CT: McCain: "Sen. Obama, good to be with you at a town hall meeting." Took approximately two sentences for the first dig.
8:04 pm CT: Obama leads off — "worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, and a lot of you, Ithink are worried." He looks back from the beginning — "final verdict" on Bush-era policies. But he was asked about what to do next — and leads with the bailout package. (I didn’t think either of them would want to tout that tonight.)
But Obama is the first to talk about tax cuts tonight — will be interested to see how McCain hits back on that point. He also says "middle class" first.
8:02 pm CT: John McCain quick to make eye contact from the start — he won’t want that storyline to repeat itself.

why should housing prices be stabilized? Lower home prices amke for more affordable housing. Lower home prices make homes easier to purchase with LOWER payments. Lower house prices are desirable, just as are lower prices are desirable for goods sold at walmart, and more affordable health care.. Capitalism is supposed to lead to higher productivity and lower prices for goods and services, so why do we want higher home prices??

McCain harps on Fannie and Freddie but he has no conception of what he is talking about… The Republican nominee, Mr. McCain of Arizona, has numerous close relationships with and contributions from current and former company lobbyists.

From the AP article “Palin stretches the truth in campaign”
“What’s next, claiming that he didn’t know two of his biggest supporters were running Fannie Mae, the subprime mortgage giant?” Palin said. “That has done harm to the American economy.”
She referred to Jim Johnson, who chaired Fannie Mae from 1991-1998, and Franklin Raines, his successor who stepped down in 2004 in an accounting scandal.
But Palin exaggerated Obama’s ties to Raines and Johnson while omitting any mention of a closer relationship between a top McCain aide and the failed housing giants.
Raines and Johnson support Obama but do not have strong ties to him or his campaign. Johnson briefly headed Obama’s vice presidential search last spring but resigned amid controversy over loans he got with help from an executive of Countrywide Financial Corp., a lender damaged by the mortgage meltdown.
Meanwhile, until August, Freddie Mac paid $15,000 a month to a lobbying firm headed by McCain campaign manager Rick Davis. The payment came on top of more than $30,000 a month Davis was paid directly by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac from 2000-2005 to head the Homeownership Alliance, an advocacy group.
Davis has not taken any compensation from his lobbying firm since 2006, the McCain campaign said.

Confident about the economy????What world is Obama living in. Some people will not be bale to stay in homes, nor should some of them been in the loans to begin with. Why should we buy up bad loans of people that did not read a contract, or agree to buy a home with no money down, then act like it is owed to them?

Cronyism: McCain shame on you:

general co-chair, former Sen. Phil Gramm, “was being paid by a Swiss
bank to lobby Congress about the U.S. mortgage crisis at the same time
he was advising McCain about his economic policy.”

My one big question to Barak Obama is how can he say that he has the answer to the current financial mess when his record as a community leader in Chicago shows that he and ACORN forced many banks to lend money to low and missle income families who could not get loans to buy homes from local banks. And as a result, ACORN and Barak Obama contributes to the sub prime motrage mess. Also ACORN is incolved in voter fraud in 16 states that are battleground states and he voted against many voter reform ills that would have eliminated many of the fradulent practices that ACORN is involved in currently.

there is a lot of talk about home loans, business loans, etc. no one is talking about credit card debt and the high percentages that credit card lenders charge users. knock that percentage in half or even to a quarter of that amount and it would help immensely. if loans are 5-6% (and savings accounts are under 4%) why are credit cards still sticking to 20-36%? that just doesn’t add up. you want to help an ordinary family pay their bills?? talk about real debt that ordinary families pay every day. home payments and credit card debt and health care. it’s all bundled together hand in hand.

Amazing how no one wants to bring up the fact that it wasn’t just Wall Street’s greed, it was also the greed of many of the middle class americans (who have now become martyrs) and who bought outside their means and in many cases made profits off the sale of their home. No candidate dares speak the truth that this was a product of America’s greed, not just Wall Street’s greed.

fairelection, get the facts:
PALIN: Said of Democratic presidential candidate Obama: “94 times he voted to increase taxes or not support a tax reduction.”
THE FACTS: The dubious count includes repetitive votes as well as votes to cut taxes for the middle class while raising them on the rich. An analysis by factcheck.org found that 23 of the votes were for measures that would have produced no tax increase at all, seven were in favor of measures that would have lowered taxes for many, 11 would have increased taxes on only those making more than $1 million a year.

J – I’m saying LOOK AT OBAMA’S VOTING RECORD. I’m not asking you to repeat what Palin or anyone else said. The record DOESN’T LIE!! I admit Obama’s voting record if sparse, but it’s still there to see. OBAMA HAS THE MOST LIBERAL VOTING RECORD IN THE SENATE!! Does Obama propose on creating an oversight agency to monitor his gov’t healthcare bureaucrats from robbing the program blind?? Docs will just go underground and give appointments to those that can pay more and pay on time unless they fear prosecution. This would require oversight and auditing which will cost the taxpayer even more!!

Suggestion/Question:
Why can’t we have a real-time fact-checking team working during a debate to throw “flags” like in sports (foul, off-sides, etc) for false attacks and lies, to which the candidates are held accountable???
Then, we’d be able to hold candidates to making accurate assertions, and we could really see who wins the arguments.

McCain keeps talking about a spending freeze “for national defense and all but the most critical functions of government” – seems to me that that could be the worst possible thing to do. We need to cut our money going overseas and do what Obama has been saying (whether his record shows it, I don’t care, he’s saying it and McCain isn’t), spend the money AT HOME to make more jobs. Whether it’s roadwork, oil drilling, whatever, spending at home creates jobs and potentially could boost economy…

Why do we always have a pro Democrat asking questions and suggesting answers to Obama. Obama is playing as though he knows what the middle class is when he made $2 million last year. Now he wants to off shore drill. Never before. The Democrats won’t let anyone off shore drill and have handicapped the refineries with no increase in production.
Clinton signed the bill intgroduced by the Democrats like Barney Frank which forced Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to give mortgages to unqualified minorities. This torpedoed the banking industry and now everyone is now blaming it on Bush. He has made blunders of his own, but this banking crisis belongs to the Democrats.

I just say that the best way to prove what your campaign stands for is by doing the actions in your own life first. How much did the suites that they are wearing tonight cost? Why not begin cutting things out of the government that these high dollar government officials are getting paid and the benefits that cost soooo much that they can use public transportation more….they can even give themselves and each other raises throughout the government….why does the president get paid in the hundred thousands a year when they have everything for free. Free housing, free transportation, free food, free whatever you want basically as a president so why not cut that first to prove you are serious in fixing this?

I have a small business and used to do work with the Feds in my city. Saving them money with the products I sell. Two years ago a program was instituted requiring all Federal Agencies to purchase from particular government run programs. I researched this to find that one of the Federal Courts in my city is spending $5000.00 more per order for the same product that I manufacture. Our price was $3K and the government programs price was $8K. Mind you that was one order on one day out of the year. I can’t imagine what goes on with the big purchases.

It will take years for nuclear energy plants to come online. What does McCain think he will do now?
It is a problem when we think we can get something for nothing. We can’t cut taxes to much or how do we pay for health insurance, education, energy solutions.
2+2=4 and there isn’t any magic in how we pay for government programs. WE PAY for then!! Promised of blue sky money has gotten us into the current financial situation.

I am so sick of Obama talking about the “working” man. Do you have to make under $250,000 to work hard? My husband spent 16 years in school to get to where he is today and works harder than anyone I know. And what if he makes more than $250,000 a year? Obama has said that we don’t need two houses. I thought people came to America because it is a land of opportunity. Who is he to say that working hard to get somewhere in life is a bad thing. Last I recall this was called “Socialism”. And finally, he wants to raise the “wealthy” peoples taxes dramatically. Last I checked we were already paying half of our income in taxes. If we pay even more we will stop spending, and when the people with the money stop spending it what do you think will happen to the economy? No more cleaning ladies and trips to the mall. Now these folks are on unemployment. Sounds to me like he is telling the “working” class what they wanna hear. Not reality.

I just wish, someone with their so called questions, would ask BOTH men….. Since you’re trying to convince us you’re “for the people of the USA”, why did you not fight to give the US the people the $700Billion instead approving it go to the very same companies that have helped bring us to the financial point we are right now?
The money would be split among every LEGAL citizen over 21. That money could have been taxed, so money would have gone right back into the country’s account. We could have paid up our morgage loans, car loans, any student loans.
It is because of the high gas, food, electric, cost of living prices that has caused US the American people to put these so-called companies that need “bailing out” almost out of business. We havent been able to afford, the electric, the gas, the food, the student loans.
So Mccain, Obama, if you want us to believe you really and truely care about us the American people, why didnt you give US the money back we have paid in to the very companies that are kicking us out of our homes?
To me, this is the question that should be raised to these two men.

OK, why are we stuck on nuclear power. I understand the importance of it, but at the same time it is incredibly dangerous and what do we do with the waste? Why are we not talking more about solar, wind, geothermal? Why also are we not talking about electric/solar vehicles that could be and should be made right here in America. This would renew Detroit and all of our entire auto industry, and boost our economy.

What needs to be addressed is that the large corporations in America choose to move their dealings overseas where taxes are not as high. To keep this extra profit, they simple fold the money back into overseas business. This takes jobs AND revenue from the American economy. Tax “breaks,” or changes to the tax laws in the U.S., has the potential to benefit our economy by increasing our tax revenue and creating more jobs for our citizens on our soil.

It really is sad working TWO parttime jobs, and not bringing in $150 a week!!!
But then I hear some company with their high finance charges go under? Let them go under!! I want My money back, I am tired of being taxed to death, but then I cant get any insurance because I am single with no kids, or just ignored until it comes down to my pay check.
I dont care if the rich are hurting, hell it is MY money they have in their pocket!
I want to know where the “change” is from both of them! As it goes right now, the only “change” I see, is me getting poorer!

Do people understand what earmarks are? They’re a way for the D.C. crowd to make sure money gets back to the states they represent. Sure, they’re often abused. But, I’m sure many of the folks in Illinois are grateful for the cash Obama brought home from Washington. Get over it, McCain!
And, regarding the “overhead projector” Obama wrangled for the Planetarium…
Anyone who’s been so fortunate as to visit the Planetarium in Chicago (or any Planetarium, for that matter) will likely tell you that it was worth every penny. The “overhead projector” is actually a state-of-the-art piece of equipment that projects the solar system onto a gigantic dome-shaped ceiling so people can learn about space.
The museum hosts millions of visitors annually, many of them school children, from all over the world. I grew up in Chicago and attended Chicago public schools. I don’t remember much, but I remember those museums. I wish they were available to kids everywhere.

Obama just said the government invented the computer….I think he meant the internet. But I’m sure noone would call him on it.
He twists everything to his way.
Why isn’t he talking about the Democratic Barney Frank and all the money he made off of Freddie Mae and Freddie Mack….as he was telling the world that everything there was fine? The Democratic Congress has gotten us on the brink of a depression.
I do not trust Obama…We don’t know enough about what he really believes because if you look back on when he started running for President he had one view to get the Democratic nomination, which was radically left. Now he has moved to the middle, and I just don’t believe that he has changed his mind that much!

In regards to the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac issues: Any FHA loan I know of requires the borrower to purchase P.M.I. (Private Mortgage Insurance) that PROTECTS the federal loan people in case the borrower defaults on the loan. PMI insurance is not cheap. My question is with the vast number of FHA loans issued in this country requiring PMI where is this money? Over the many years FHA has issued loans, up to now, very few of these loans have defaulted. Why isn’t the PMI money collected from these loans available to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? The term Siphoning Off quickly comes to mind. Once again, the average hard working Joe pays through the “you-know-what” for big business (or big government)top heads to get even greedier.

The debate between each other and cut each other down doesn’t get us anywhere. Why our government give people with other nationality with all the loans and money for all the small busnisses such as hotels and gas stations and stuff like that instead of giving to americans. we dont send the money to our families in another countries? that way if americans own them when it could help health care. Im 16 years old and why are we still fighting in this war when none of the other countries are repairing our twin towers. why isn’t the money from the lottery going to where it belongs. And screw the $5,000 tax credit. (1) it goes directly to the insurance company… now how many of you can survive annually on $5,000 of health care. I just got a bill where I went into the emergency room and they charged me $56.00 for 2 ibuprofen. (2) I don’t have the money to pay my healthcare and get a credit in January/February with my taxes.

Insurance comapnies cherrypick hte best riskss adn duimp the rest on the government.
Outlaw cherry picking by all parties involved in medical care.. inurance companies, aptients and doctors..
mccain and obama are wrong.. we need one risk pool in the usa.. just ONE.. to eliminate cherry picking/eliminate medical underwriting..
if comapnies want ot buy insurance for their employess,. let them buy that insurance from the one nationwide risk pool.
and helath care is a privialge in america, rationed by how much moneyu one has.. end of story.
if private health care is so great.. why do private insurance companies NOT insure those over 65? come on, capitallism is supposed ot deliver more goods at lower prices, health care includeed.. our current system has been corrupted by cherry picking and medical underwriting.

If you know their healthcare proposals. McCain’s healthcare will caous people with major problems to go out and redefine the healthcare benefits. If you people read this you should check into this because you cannot find another heathcare if you alredy have major problems. My wife and I know this for a fact. McCains plan will drop people with problems. Cancer, Heart problems, and other issues.

We have proven that our government does not handle large programs very well. Our government now waste millions of dollars a year within the medicare program. Obama wants us to have socialized medicine! Which is why Canadians and Russians come here to get health care!! They have socialized medicine and it is terribly ineffective!
Posted by: Eddie | October 7, 2008, 9:59 pm 9:59 pm
Anyone who has tried to purchase private health insurance ought to know that a $5000 tax credit ain’t gonna get you very far! First of all, DECENT coverage costs hundreds of dollars per month. It often comes with high deductibles and benefit caps. Some policies carry $25,000 lifetime benefit caps — hope you never need major surgery! Plus, prescription coverage carries an additional expense.
Oh, and if you’ve got any pre-exisiting conditions (diabetes, autoimmune disorders, etc.), you can forget it. They won’t cover you. And, you’ll pay extra for pregnancy coverage.
Unfornately, the health insurance industry needs to be regulated for it to be fair.

Why doesn’t someone tell what really caused the necessity for the bailout?
In 1977, I believe, Clinton’s action on the Community Reinvestment Act allowed people that could not afford a house to receive special terms and financing to buy one. Many of these buyers renigged on their loans, filed bankruptcy, etc. that ultimately brought about today’s problem.

McCain leading debate in my opinion. Raising income tax any business; small or Corporate would be devasting.
The Bailout Legislation is a bust in my opinion. They might as well burned the money. It will in no way decrease taxpayer debt, give taxpayers more after tax income to pay those debts or help those currently facing Foreclosure.
Already States are asking for “Bailout” and I expect that trend to continue.
How about bailing out the Taxpayers!!How about providing our young adults with affordable College education instead of allowing Sallie Mae to suck the life out of College Graduates and putting many in so much debt they will never be able to pay it off!
I will not vote for any Candidate who intends to raise Income Tax.

Janet McMorrow , there is an orginization that may be able to help you ramusa.org.
The organization is run on donations only. So anyone that can help the organization will help those of us that do not have health insurance as my family does not.
We are a family that does not make enough to buy health insurance , but make to much to qualify for Medicaid type programs.
Also, most areas have dental schools. These are usually in Community Colleges . They to will provide service at no cost or free.
I hope this helps.

Everything is about what we the American people have to sacrifice, I want to see them have to give up some of their perks and entitlements!! Obama just said he would make the medical insurance companies drop their prices. I would LOVE to hear how he plans to do this !! Give me a break, his ideas on medical coverage are weak and will never work.
Remember, Canada has thier medical coverage through the government. I happen to know many doctors who left Canada to come here to practice “real” medicine. We are in the forefront of medicine in America. We go with Obama’s policy and forget that. No more extra spending in the hospitals for new technology.

If the candidates were to do a bit of research they might get a better understanding of how the current crisis started.
Most of the problems we are currently having stem from Executive Order 12892 – Leadership and Coordination of Fair Housing in Federal Programs: Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing, signed into act by President William Jefferson Clinton on January 17, 1994 (http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=50176) & (http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=50187). In short, with the stroke of his pen he changed who monitors the mortgage industry and that Americans of every income level, seeking to live where they choose, feel the weight of discrimination because of the color of their skin, their race, their religion, their gender, their country of origin, or because they are disabled or have children should be given a chance to be a homeowner.
Additionally the major banks in the US decided to change some of their practices too. With the inception of Home Equity Lending larger banks decided that they could take a piece of the pie by doing away with PMI (Private Mortgage Insurance) on mortgages that did not meet the 20% down payment requirement and replace it with a Home Equity Loan. This created some great bottom line profits for the institution since fee income is considered profit. The reason that fee income was so important is that it has a direct correlation to the year-end bonus of the CEO, but also put the bank in a position that they could be lending up to 100% of the purchase price of the home thus increasing their risk should the loan go into foreclosure.
Add to this Interest Only Mortgages which allowed the borrower to purchase homes well beyond their means and pay only the interest on the mortgage for a period of up to 10 years and others who refinanced their current home whereby stripping the equity strip and using the money to purchase 2nd homes or another primary dwelling without a mortgage on it and renting out the prior home that they stripped the equity from. In the scenario of equity stripping, when property values plummeted and money became tighter the borrower walked away from the mortgage since they still had a primary home to live in leaving the bank with a foreclosure.
A generalized bailout of Wall Street and the Banking Industry is gross negligence on behalf of the Senate and House of Representatives. People that purposely lied on their applications to secure a mortgage, people that stripped the equity out of their homes to by a new mortgage free home or 2nd home, or banks and wall street brokers that packaged CMO’s knowing full well what they were doing should never, I repeat never be given a bailout and should be held responsible for the problems they created.

No, Robin, you didn’t pay for your Social Security. The money current workers and employers pay goes straight to current recipients, less government overhead. IT IS A PAY-AS-YOU-GO system and always has been. It’s simply a transfer of income from employers and employees to retirees. And all these government shell games, like Medicare and Social Security and this bailout, don’t produce a thing for the economy. They merely rob Peter to pay Paul. But you don’t get it, Obama doesn’t get it, and I guess about 51% of U.S. voters don’t get it. So bring on the train wreck, “Carter II,” and let’s get it over with. Maybe enough pain will finally end this socalist, redistributionist nonsense. Or we can become Venezuela North. Your choice, people.

Colette — Health care is a moral issue. It’s a human right. That’s why some of the best health care available in our country is provided to inmates.
I do not have a single problem with people being required to have health care. I teach in a public school in a low-income neighborhood. Though most of our families would qualify for government programs, some people never go out and sign up. This leaves their children uninsured. It also means they’re without care and unable to care for their kids when they’re ill because they have no access to care for themselves.
It’s a right and a duty.

You do not want to have more than a cold in CANADA.
If you go to the hospital you will be in a ward. You will go on a list .
I know this first hand. I have many friends from CANADA. Those that can afford it come here.
The rest get sent home and wait on a list. If you are lucky you will go in the hall before they get to the ward.
For this you have the pleasure to pay 17.5% on everything from a haircut to dinner . Gas is double the price it is here.
All that pays for their FREE health care.

We are peacekeepers at our best interest. McCain failed to mention that all other government entities need to be a considerable amount of oversight except DoD. Yes, there needs to be considerable amount of oversight in the DoD because it is the taxpayers who are also responsible for paying when certain DoD programs are overrunning in their budget. There needs to be some accountability and responsibility for the overruning of cost that the taxpayer has to pick up the tab. So how can McCain not include some of those DoD programs that need oversight. McCain has a solid point that Obama shouldn’t announce what the specific plans are to attack another country or leader. So I agree with McCain that we have to talk softly but carry the big stick.

the economy is dying. The gorvernment bails out the big lending guns, such as Fannie, Freddie, etc. Then HUD / FHA (our government) make new gudelines and changes to help the people and the economy be able to afford to purchase homes or refinance their current loans and not default, but the biggest problem is all these lenders putting into place over lay of guidelines that do not conform to the government chages. So what is our government doing? What advice are they getting, oviously not from the people, but from the represetatives that have walked away with more money then our bail out plan!!!

Geeze will obama answer a question without drawing our attention away from it. Why can’t he do all three at once. Watch out elderly and handicapped your #3 when obama gets around to it. He wants energy then wants to find the way to keep illegals getting all the healthcare so our elderly and poor have to buy plans. I say hey obama lets not divide the pie so all the so called poor, aka, illegals no longer drain the system away from americans. And ya, obama answer the kids question of what you would do for all those not in uniform. Will you tell them to support the troops or will you do as you have been. Propping up the dingleberries who are clueless to why were are here fighting a war drafted for Clinton but he didn’t have the spine. Clinton let bin laden live when he could have killed him twice. Clintons admins got atta released from israels jail. And I truly would like someone to ask obama. Why he went to the middle east. All we know of the trip is a few photos, closeups of just him and his staff in the tent troops use to relax and have chow. And he has a photo up in his face of him eating a so called meal. What those close ups don’t show is. THERE WERE NO SOLDIERS ALLOWED. He refused to meet with wounded troops in the hospital on the way. And refused to acknowledge the troops pulled from their missions to play his body guards while he drove around in a bulletproof vehicle from the flt line to the generals tent. He talks he’s for the vets yet he ignored the wounded and actively serving troops on his so called middle east trip. WE should do our history as well. This recession is the product of Clinton and the democrats not allowing Bush to fix it. REmember the saying “Do nothing Democrats”. They said if we would make them the majority they would show up to work and work with Bush. Well they are still no shows. Too many vacations. And they literally put troops families in the homeless catagory last december. Some troops came home homeless, their families became homeless. And some spouse lost their on base jobs and childcare which allowed them to work. For what. To make Bush look Bad I lost three jobs between 94 and 98. And only had health care for 1hr of the second job. And as for bin laden. Bin laden escaped bill clinton not Bush. Bin laden is nothing more then a match that strike the latest fire. And like a firefighter. Bush has to first deal with and contain the fire before he rushes in to figure out the match remains might be. And Bush never forgot about afghanistan the media refused to report it. Bush has nothing to do with what media reports. Need more info there. Go to pentagonchannel.mil. You would be shocked at what the media knows and refuses to report because rewriting history for the democrats is more fun. Before you think badly of me. I regret my vote for clinton and thank bush for making me see what my little brother tried to show me. And more so. This so called war started before my watch in 1984. It started in 1979 with suicide attacks. The truck bombs that killed over 270 marines. The hostages that were held for 444days. That’s tortured and mistreated for over a yr. The gulf war. Since then saddam has been pushing for a war that is why one was drafted for clinton and he changed his mind. Then we have somalia which was a sample of what was to come. The WTC bombing, the african embassies bombings the Cole. All while clinton was cutting our military by 40% so the salaries for those 40% military no longer serving can be called “clinton surplus”. That’s right clinton surplus was the paychecks of thousands of active duty military kicked to the curb. I know I watched it and felt it.

Just to clarify, folks, the bailout was NOT an effort to help people in danger of foreclosure. The bailout was to help financial institutions so that they wouldn’t tighten the credit market to the point that people couldn’t borrow money. When people start defaulting on loans, banks start getting stingy with money. When people can’t get credit, they stop buying big-ticket items. When people stop buying big-ticket items, the economy worsens.
I don’t support the bailout. It was a hasty, band-aid of a measure. The banks made this bed and they should lie in it.
But, if we’re going to comment on the issues, let’s make sure we understand them.

Brokaw- why are you even asking Obama Questions??? Did McCain turn down a one on one interview with you or something- get a room and then get a clue.
Most of these questions are too comlex for a one word or one sentence answer. If thats what they wanted then they should have done a written test and posted the candidates answers. DUH

Why doesn’t anyone ask Mr. Ethics (Mr. Obama) why he believes in abortion? We need a strong leader that protects those that are not even born… Funny how Barak Obama speaks about genocide and believes in abortion. Truthfully, what a hypocrite (a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess… DICTIONARY.COM)

But seriously, I feel that I’d vote for the guy with a 10 word answer. Just answer the question, no attack on you opponent. Short, Simple, and Sweet. They give you 1 minute to answer, take 30 seconds. Show example that you can get the job done because you don’t spend your time beating around the bush. Unless of course you are really beating bush and with a large club. then take all the time you want.

Heck, we’re going to be paying for the future so we should be in control of the interview.

Rick Klein’s got it wrong on a couple of points so far:
1. McCain is calling for us to sacrifice with budget cutbacks in the Govt budget. Don’t worry, people will be unhappy, with budget cutbacks.
2. Rules are rules, Obama has agreed to them, but when things are going his way, he demands to break him. That’s not leadership nor presidential.
Rick, will Obama just discard rules of Govt when he can’t get his way?!
We are going to elect a President that hasn’t held onto a job for more than three years. His longest obligation was Columbia University where he had to stay four years. He’s never seen anything through and we are going to give him the most important job in the World if the polls are right.
Ironic isn’t it. Most Americans would never hire nor trust someone who’s job record shows not holding on to a company or career longer than three years but it’s okay for President of the USA!!

The job market has changed and obviously you are out of touch. This isn’t our parents America. You are your children are not guaranteed a job at some big company with great benefits generation after generation. Hiring officers have been told to expect multiple job listings on resumes. You shouldn’t speak if you don’t know, that is where ignorance takes place. All of us want answers! Look at me and so I can judge if your telling the truth. Talk to me not one person, yes make sure you address them at first but then move, take your eyes off them and move around, that really is a bit freaky!!

McCain has Obama on the defensive. Obama seems worried. He is rambling on nervously and giving the appearance of a young schoolboy. McCain has the experience and knowledge to lead this country. Obama has a lot of learning to do. You have to be prepared BEFORE you become the president. He and his wife do not have the country’s best interests at heart. McCain does. That is huge. My fellow Americans, we really need to hone in on what the candidates are saying and not saying. We are not going to reduce our energy consumption, however we can change the source but that has to come from Congress to force the industry to change/transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy. We need to press very hard on our candidates what tax incentives will you provide to the American people who will need financial assistance on converting to renewable energy sources. Secondly, I am not sure how many people want to live near a nuclear power plant and why is McCain pushing that? I don’t hear him mentioning compressed natural gas and solar which is more feasible and in reach to the American people and what is the timeline of how we can achieve Energy Independence.

I wish a candidate would just stand up and say, we all have ideas about needed change and the reality is that all of the ideas are unlikely to occur in the next four years so what is really comes down to is the ability to convince others on the first and next few steps to move the country in a different direction

I am currently servin in the United States Marine Corps. The Corps is stretched thin on the number of Marines that can deploy overseas, as I’m sure all of the Services are. My question is, is if they (mainly Obama) want to invade Pakistan, and doin this and that with Russia and Georgia, where are they going to get all of the troops to support these; for lack of better words; invasions? Like someone said earlier, the VA is NOT ready for all of us to come and file our claim. Our economy isn’t strong enough for the US alone, how are we going to support Georgia and all of those other little countries that are having financial difficulties as well?

I second that! Most employers will start nitpicking after the 3rd year if you hang around. Things like your salary is topped out or you’re now over qualified for the job. Everyone should have a 2nd job just in case. I do and I feel more at ease in this economy because my world won’t end tomorrow with the loss of my primary job.

Jamie H.. I agree with you up to a point regarding the granting of credit. But what you didn’t say is that most of the loans we’re talking about were not bank originated but rather broker originated. Brokers do not work for banks!
When presented with the loans that were Interest Only – No Doc loans the banks were not allowed to verify documents presented or the loan would not have been a No Doc loan. Rather the banks would put the loan through either Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac’s electronic underwriting models for approval. If Fannie or Freddie approved the loan the bank would purchase the loan from the broker and then sell it to either Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. A vast number of the loans that were generated by brokers were loaded with points and fees, just short of becoming Section 32 High Cost Loans, which no bank would touch.
Additionally, banks have already been advised to work with borrowers that are in default and use foreclosure as the last resort. Monies going to banks from the bailout are to purchase non-performing assets, which would also include loans ready to go into foreclosure. Additionally, that is why the Secretary of the Treasury has been given the rights to re-negotiate loans.

Obama has lied about his associations with Ayres. He worked with the man for years in the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, which Ayres worked hard to get a $49mm grant to lead….so I do not believe he did work hand in hand with Obama who was the Chairman of the Board. Why Obama would lie about that experience is the question? He used that experience in Chicago. But he lied to us about that experience. Why? There has to be something that he is hiding or he would have not tried to hide this experience.
He also had a close relationship with Resko in Chicago. If you think those are the types of relationships that our President should have….then Obama is your man.

Barak Obama said that he does not understand a lot of things about why the United States left Afganistan and invaded Iraq. He and the world needs to listen when ben Ladin and the terrorist state their goals and they states that Iraq was the key and that is because they want the oil in Iraq. We all need to listen to our enemies when they publically tell the world what they think the key goals are and be ready to stop and combat their goals. Now back to ACORN, at one point, it was reported that ACORN was trying to register German tourists to vote in the U.S election and it would not surprise me if they are trying to register illegal aliens. They have already tried to register homeless persons and a key requirement is that every registered votes have and maintain a legal residence. Now we hear that the Obama campaign wants to have their voters wear campaing buttons and shirts inside the polling place. If Barak Obama is such a good lawyer, he should now that all campaign material is strickly forbidden inside the polling place.

Maylin :Maybe I misunderstood what Fannie and Freddie were about. I thought they guaranteed loans funded by banks. Neither was an actual lender? Where I live, all the big banks were offering ARMs starting around 2000. I noticed this because we were going to buy a more expensive home and these bankers made it seem so easy. I’m just glad we didn’t get caught up. We always qualified for triple what I thought we could afford!

Bob9775 — Thanks for the additional clarity. My point was directed at other bloggers who were making judgments about issues on which they were clearly uninformed of the facts.
In terms of my feelings on the bailout, I believe that a more effective method would have been dealing directly with homeowners. Perhaps the government could have created a program in which it purchased homes from those in danger of foreclosure and made arrangements for them to repay remaining debt if they were upside down in their loans. I realize this is also not a perfect solution…and ultimately people would still lose their homes. I just am concerned about how and when struggling homeowners will benefit from the bailout. And, what will happen to their credit, their savings and their security in the process?

I find one item that has not been mentioned in the struggle for the Presidency. Why is it that I call J.C. Penny for information about my credit and I can’t understand who I am talking to. You call Dell and get someone you can’t understand. Perhaps we should talk about jobs coming back into this country. We have problems with the Chinese and lead in their toys and who knows what else. Out dog food is contaminated. Can you find anything not from China? High taxes should be assessed to the companies that take jobs out of our country. They are responsible for those unable to make their house payment. This is the real reason why people have lost their jobs. Bring the jobs back to the United States!

Although one must reach a bit, often, they agreed when they appeared to disagree. Odd, almost scary, McCain got down in your face, sweet, soft, breathy, even the familiar syntax…if I’d not been watching, only listening, it was Ronnie, his Hero. It was almost as though he’d done his “prep” watching all the Ronnie debates and the contemporary press conferences. I was not a huge Ronnie fan–until his admirable, extaordinarily graceful and heroic announcement. I am offended that McCain attempted to invoke his spirit–”seriously.” I am not a Republican but Ronnie, at the end of the day, was simply decent, probably innocent to a political fault, but decent. McCain’s costume was not a “comfortable wear” and many are skeptical about a Bush Resale bargain item.

McCain had more attacks (true or not, one would have to fact check McCain’s claim because he lies so much) and Obama had more specifics on what he would do to fix the mess.
I thought Tom Brokaw’s strict time rules detracted from the debate and tied the candidates’ hands in following up on the others’ claims.

Obama needs to go back to school and learn the true history of our nation not the twisted version the media has help the democratic party push. Get over the first election and remember Bush was elected fear and square the second time. He needs to learn that Iran is the riches country oil and natural gas but is dirt poor because it feeds all it’s revenue to hamas and hezboula not it’s people. And there he goes lying to us again. Bush didn’t force iran into nukes by not dealing with NK and iran. He brought NK to the table by insisting that those countries will only be dealt with by a committee of nations. We will not meet so that it can be viewed as our words verses theirs should something arise. And he states he will meet with our enemies with no conditions. Yet, during the last debate he said ya he would meet but on his terms. What’s the difference between his terms and preconditions. Aren’t they the same. He talks the talk but I doubt he can walk the walk. Rumor is he spends hours every night rehearsing but I don’t trust him to walk the walk. He comes across as a game show contestant whose thought is to win at all costs. Not that he wants the job. Especially after he stated last yr while still scratching at hillary’s coat tails that he if elected “would hire a staff to do his job”. Hello, the president is the president. One person. Not a staff with him as a center piece or a face to put to the movement. WE don’t need democrats denials to rescue this nation. We need republicans because they seem to be the only ones paying attention to all that is happening around the world that can and will affect us. It was all that denial that got us to 9/11. Hell, sen. Edwards stated the week after 9/11 that he knew of the attack but felt it wouldn’t happened. We are protected by oceans so the public doesn’t need to know. That organization that blow up the spanish train to get them out of the war was blowing up americans in the 80s while I was stationed in spain. ETA is a muslim group that feels spain owed/ owes them half their country because of their religion. Proof of that look what frances has been dealing with. That is why there will be no peace for israel. The religion reads and is twisted that if a muslim lives on a piece of land that land is islam and all muslims are to die for it before it can be considered lost to infidels. Watch out they are making stands all around the world. They want to have a voice in the netherlands government. And the war on terror was stated to be and considering it started in 1979, It’s obvious it will not be over any time soon. So we have to make sure we have someone in office with the balls and knowledge to defend our nation. Because the cole, the african embassies, WTC bombing, and the committee not notifying us of impending attack on 9/11 shows the democrats are and will always be to blindsighted to be trusted with our nations safety and security. WE need someone that will juggle all three issues at once not one at a time. And someone that has already proved he is for the people and nation first even before himself. You do your history, real history of the past 16yrs and you would be shocked. You would ask yourself what the hell was bill thinking kicking those troops to the curb for their paychecks. And oh, by the way. Those budgets obama mentioned. They are the budgets that keep the military working. The budgets that keep the troops in country with more then just a bottle of water and a MRE. A budget that purchased mraps after way too many soldiers were killed thanks to democrats using the media to point out to the enemies to hurt us is to blow up humvees. Do you know that in the beginning the democrats didn’t want to buy mraps. They only did after the media couldn’t sit on the story any longer as persons like myself were saying guilt the bastards into giving our troops mraps. Now if they would only give them cornershoots. They are an attachment to guns that allow troops to shoot around corners and by propping their weapon above them while lying behind a berm. They can fire without exposing themselves. Obama and biden who lied himself during his debate. Have sold the people one lie after the other. Especially when it comes to military issues. Go to “pentagonchannel.mil” and there you will be able to see and hear that Bush didn’t forget afghanistan. You can hear every briefing start to finish and find out what the military is reporting but media is blocking. Beside afghanistan. You will say where has obama been when he keeps saying the two countries have to stand up so we can leave. Tell obama what we can do first is put a stop to what his party started after 9/11 and sen. Kennedy wants. Stop giving out visas to foreigners to come here and work high paying jobs while americans are suffering and working two low income jobs because they can’t find a job in their career force. My last job was to show someone the ropes so they can do the job and I go my merry way. I have an ecuadoring computer worker in the unit attached to mine. He somehow got his family here. His sons get free high end college educations by pretending to be rotc bond. There daughter to much of a princess needed something else for her high end college. That was the father and younger son coming onto my property while I went out. I found out by the doorbell ringing and the father handing me my wallet back. Funny how he had it when I left it on the chair before I left earlier. They tried to steal my identity to put the daughter in college. And also took every cent of monies I had in my wallet 17Dec05. Leaving me with nothing for christmas. They behave like they have champaign paychecks yet they stole my identity to put their daughter in college. Well thankfully it was already stole in 1990 and I’m still suffering from it so they weren’t able. But I still have to deal with them shoving in my face they know everything about me. And have our tax dollars giving the sons high end educations that my nephew couldn’t afford. And worse he had to drop out of his lower end school for law enforcement do to fearing if he tried to work 40+ hrs with school he wouldn’t do good enough. Oh, and in notifying my healthcare that I had the identity problem. I had my healthcare cancelled until I proved I was an american. There’s the rub. We want to fix our healthcare system we need to kick the illegals off and make their countries of origin responsible for that expense. That is were the healthcare went wrong. The neighbors also used the rotc program to get the wifes parents here. And grandma is making good use of the healthcare system. Another question is if Lou Dobbs did two shows on the wmds that were found in iraq. Them aside. I can understand national security reasons why we might pretend we didn’t find the weapons. After all all saddam did with the weapons in the past were to bury them. Why isn’t anyone interested or remembering that we found iraqi individuals that were testing positive for radiation poisoning back during the looting. When we were welcomed and received as liberators. Before democrats went and used the word they were told by clerics not to. That being occupied. Food for thought. Educate yourselves. Though my first choice was Duncan Hunter for his campaign to stop illegals. McCain is winning me over.

P.S. For the individual who cannot fathom the presence of the Moderator, I urge you to pick up The Greatest Generation and its companion volume. He told the story of our mothers and our sweet daddies who lived through a similar time, and then, just to top it off, found the time, the spirit, the sacrifice to put WWII on their dance card. He wrote of my uncle who was with General Patton and lies buried in Italy. He wrote of my father who never had a peaceful night’s sleep after the war, always the nightmares, always the night sweats. Our daddies returned from Europe, shook out their trousers and gave birth to my generation and never took a break, never paused to consider they were “entitled” but went straight away to their respective tasks, honored to produce in their labors and partake in the blessings of this country and their families. They were The Greatest Generation, make no mistake and no one, ever, has written more intimately of our parents and the world they made for me…and for you. I cannot speak for others on this blog thing, but my instant reaction when I saw who was to “Moderate” this evening’s exchange was, “how fitting.” If you are not familiar with his works, you might explore the titles for you may learn of your parents or your grandparents and certainly of my parents.

Jason, Nice your father has a job and didn’t have his company go under do to not being able to keep up with bills 70/30 china trade which cost a lot of businesses their livelyhoods. And that was only two. The third I had to train a person to do my job and then give it to her because I was paid more. That company too is now under a different name. And it’s the same thanks to congress with the military. I was know of a lot of people that were kicked out for bills surplus claim and now we need those active duty back and we are either too old or damaged. I both being 45 with a neck and shoulder injury that infringes on my health and abilities arthritis aside. If given the chance I would go serve my country pain and hardships aside. And I put my creativity to use everyday. It’s not my fault no one is interested because there is cheaper workers out there or that No one is in need at the moment. I am not now or every one that complains. I didn’t raise myself that way. I believe it I don’t get it done it wouldn’t. So sorry if you didn’t read all the lines. Just the ones were I stated the recession started on bills second term and the democrats refused to work with bush or allow him the ability to correct it. Remember a president is only as good as congress allows him to be. And if they sandbag the president through his whole term then it’s not going to look good unless you see past the media stories and poll numbers to see. He did a great job with what little he was allowed to work with. And the next time you hear someone mention katrina. Remember Bush went there a number of times and even rolled up his sleeves. We begged congress to come off vacation to sign relief funds before the storm hit. And as yet no democrat that I know of has visited new orleans. And remember katrina didn’t hit new orleans. Katrina hit mississippi. And more to the point Katrina hit FEMA dead on. Give them credit for being up and running within two days. I know because my friend works as an er nurse for fema. Sad the dems denigrated fema and Bush when they were the only ones showing up before and during the storm. Sorry but the more I think the more history bubbles out.

It seems every time he opens up his mouth he changes what he’s saying here and there. I say when you see him at the stand with the change sign think of this. He’s nothing more then a flip flopper that won’t be labeled because the media realized labeling Kerry blew it for him. Change is obama changing his mind. aka flip flopping.

How many times did McCain mention his running-mate Sarah Palin in this debate? He mentions Joe Lieberman and Ronald Reagan several times. I just wonder why he did not mention his fellow maverick Governor Palin.

Jamie: We are not to know that when we went after the taliban they ran to saddam for free healthcare for their wounds. When we started bombing afghanistan the taliban and al qaeda scattered to pakistan and iraq by way of iran. Remember iranian government refused to hand over the terrorist they were holding. They’re the grief we are dealing with today. And the iraqi war was drafted in 98 for clinton to start because everyone was sick of saddam trying on a daily basis to kill american pilots by trying to shot them out of the air. He almost succeeded and that my friends is an act of WAR. And it sickens me that many youth and democrats think that those american pilots death would be a good exchange for the war we have. They would have rathered the pilot be killed then the war. I guess there’s that denial again that democrats suffer. The death of a pilot would have made the war more to the point and started sooner. Bill knew he just had two yrs to go and felt if he started the war it would get a republican elected. So he wouldn’t start his war for nothing. But the reason why obama refuses to talk about iraq is because iraq is just a few steps away from taking the reigns from us. And for him to acknowledge the positives and the situation he would totally blow his campaign speech of the past two yrs.

I wonder why Cindy McCain walked around after the debate with her hands clinched behind her back. She even hesitated to shake Barack’s hand. And the fact that she and John left the stage early…what is really going on with those two?

Oh before I forget. ON the energy issue because we will soon be hearing that the democrats are giving the poor here in new england fuel, free oil from chavez. Let me educate you on oil and the free stuff. First and foremost. That oil democrats give out during the winter. It’s not really a gift from chavez. He blackmails it from exxon mobile. He forces exxonmobile to pump and deliver it to the US in exchange for being able to keep THEIR oil fields in his country. Chavez has fixed his government so now he can do what ever he wants right up to stealing exxons oil and giving it away in and effort to sway voters. And guess who is doing all the science and spending on alternative fuels. The oil companies are the ones developing alterative fuels. And ya, you will say they are making a huge profit every yr but if you do the math. The oil companies pay more in taxes then they make in profit when the situation is all laid out. The only people getting rich are the idiots that put the nation in the situation it is now. Dingbat traders.

Marry ann: Truth be told do you make notes so as to NOT forget something? Or do you wear glasses? I didn’t see McCain reading notes. I clearly saw him WRITING. Taking notes. A good thing when you are interested in what is on the peoples minds. They ask questions. You take notes so that the next time you have the answers. Or are you just going to see fault no matter what. Because when Sarah did her homework she was called too pretty and bubbly to know what she was talking about. And Because she did her homework she was called too rehearsed.

j. henderson: I got As. I’m student of reality not of media teachings and manipulations. I watch marine bodies being dragged out of a bombed out barricks. I watched hostages being tortured for over a yr, I lived 15 months with the idea will I make it home then next time I left base. I watched the gulf war wanting to serve but had to deal with identity theft. I was gifted to the image of a naked soldiers body being dragged through the streets of somalia because the journalist wasn’t thinking the guy is but naked and dead with possible his family watching the mistreatment. I watched the WTC being bombed on my birthday. Then I got to see the african embassies bombed and the Cole bombed and still I can’t do anything about it. NO one is doing anything about it. But hey. When stationed in spain we had a problem and the president took care of it. Libya by the way. And the problem went away. Then there was 9/11 and sen. Edwards remark after I turned on my tv just in time to see the second plane strike. Then all the lets go to war. I was fine with that. WE need to stop taking punches and landing a few ourselves. Terrorist are nothing more then bullies and the only way to deal with them is to push back. It worked for Reagan. Then once we are pushing and it’s a positive for the republican party. The dems have to stop cooperating at the expense of our troops. And their manipulation of the situations are responsible for at least half the deaths. And that is being generous. And that constant where’s bin laden. Well if you killed him one of the two times you had him targeted we wouldn’t even be in the situation we are but Bill couldn’t bomb a place with monkey bars. And when he finally did drop the bomb bin laden was alerted ahead of time. Bill had to bully israel into releasing prisoners aka atta to add insult. And bin laden is nothing more then a match of the fire, and it’s containment is more important then were did the match land. My cousin is a fireman. I’m only on arthritic medication, ibuprofen. And I know things some americans don’t. What drives me nuts is talking to democrats and hearing the way they vote is looking for “D”. If a name has a D that is their vote goes. Or cnn interviewed a man last spring and he stated his 6 yr old daughter has a crush on obama so he’s going to vote for obama because his 6 yr old daughter is too young to vote. That we shouldn’t have answered 9/11 with a war. Those lives were worth not being in a war. Iraq had nothing to do. The pilots flying NFZ were expendible. I guess everyone with a problem with my not liking that way of thinking feel I shouldn’t mention that none of the american soldiers lost between 79 and present were worth the lost. To be upset by that makes me crazy, well so be it. Because though we take an oath of payment with our lives. I would rather a person of that stature living around me then that of a person too chicken to even think of earning their rights or as my neighbors pretending to want to serve for a free education on the backs of tax payers. So before anyone judges me nuts for having an opinion. Walk in my shoes first. That means raise yourself because you mom is too busy raising your three brothers and two were older. In a neighborhood that has no girls under 15 so basically in a boy zone. With a brother that uses you as a punching bag. With family in the service and hearing all the positives. I and two brothers joined. Though they are retired they are still involved through their civilian jobs. And now the next generation is serving. And ya I’m crazy if I feel the democrats are only good for getting good americans killed so I want to make sure people think before they make the mistake of electing one. An also want to get the point across that our soldiers are not feeling so loved by congress. I cross paths with a old friend lost winter and her husband couldn’t wait to share his feelings. He’s army reserve and his paycheck read United States Air Force. See dems didn’t want to sign budget so our troops got paid. Kept their homes, spouses kept their on base jobs, and childcare while they were working. Call me crazy if I’m alittle peeved at how the dems have so gravely mistreated our troops while inferring they are our national treasure. You don’t send a soldier to war then say oh by the way make do I’m not going to support you. Last christmas it was to the point that the troops were looking forward to not getting paid, only receiving bottled water and mres and hearing their spouses lost their jobs, homes, securities. I’m not crazy I’m beyond pissed at how the democratic party denigraded our military and harmed their families. And after insisting they want the whitehouse. Their candidate can’t even acknowledge those pulled from their mission to protect him. And everyone things that smooth operator is the next big thing. Smooth operator that’s all he’s got going for him. And it scary the crap out of me that he might win.

did anyone see when the 2 debaters were with their wives at the end of the debate greeting the audience and Obama was extending his hand to McCain who slid the shake over to his wife and wouldn’t shake Obama’s hand? He couldn’t even be a gentleman with even the common courtesy, decency and manners due to his opponent even if he didnt like the man, or was personally racial, or angry that he is losing the presidential race? To me, he is old, mean, set in his ways and not able to think of new strategies for the future and for the future generations of America and the world. The 21st century needs new approaches and fresh ideas.
For all the Hillary supporters: I did not see anyone touch this subject so I will: Palin called you all “18 million CRACKS” (in the glass ceiling……)”

I want someone to talk about Jane the single mother part-time Wal-Mart worker and tell me how McCain’s policies are going to be good for her.
I certainly think Joe deserves the best, but really, the majority of people out there are not even doing as well as he is, worse in the last couple of weeks, and still we have McCain holding him us as the representative of the working people. GET REAL!

I think Sen. Obama is answering the questions much better. Sen McCain seems flustered. He keeps saying the same things regarding oil and taxes. I don’t think anyone should pick a president on the basis of how he feels on abortion. We need to hear plans about education, the war, health programs and the economy. The middle class needs some breaks. I feel that the middle class is holding up this country. We pay most of the taxes. I think Sen. McCain is reaching for straws at this point. Lastly, Gov. Palin is not ready to become VP. She lacks knowledge in too many important political areas and she needs to stop the terrorist insinuations.

Sorry;Change subject; The real Joe’s Bail Out solution. To stop the leaks, recover money, and prevent this from starting all over again. Americans must demand Justice. Look Americans know Bail Out means Bribe Officials The Bail Out is $700B dollar bribe to cover up corruption.
Tax payers and consumers being robbed again and agian by a conspiricy. Pass the bail out to stop investigations. To Investigate and Convict Martha Stewart on B.S.
Many have state there is much blaim to go around. That is called a conspiricy. Corrupt or stupid, breaking the laws, is breaking the law or has America become Lawless.
Congress and CEO’s $700B bail out with not one word of stopping the leaks. Bribery has been stated by many, even congress them self.
bribery.
Black’s Law Dictionary as the offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting of any item of value to influence the actions of an official or other person in discharge of a public or legal duty. No Buts, ors, ands, ifs, maybes, about it. bribery has been proven Even stated on TV by some in congress
. Enforcement of the Laws
.Recovery of money but more than money this will stop the leaks/corruption in it tracks.
Over 1000 CEO have been unjustly enriched. CEO must repay over
$100B in bonuses.
Unjust Enrichment by laws recover from years back.
Knowledge is immaterial under the law of unjust enrichment

Re: Unjustly enriched executive
“Former HealthSouth Corp. chief executive officer Richard Scrushy has been
ordered by a judge to repay his former company more than $47.8 million in
bonuses, according to published reports. … Judge Allwin E. Horn III of
Jefferson County Circuit Court in Birmingham, who made the ruling as part of
a summary judgment in a shareholder lawsuit, determined that Scrushy is not
entitled to the payments whether or not he participated in the fraud or knew
about the scheme.”
“While the company initially reported profits during the period, Horn wrote,
HealthSouth really lost money, making Scrushy and other executives
ineligible for any bonuses.”
‘Knowledge is immaterial under the law of unjust enrichment,’ the judge
reportedly wrote. ‘Scrushy was unjustly enriched by these payments to the
detriment of HealthSouth. And to allow Scrushy to retain the benefit of
these payments would be unconscionable.’
This is just the tip of the iceberg My research also show American have lost the protection of the constitution. Manditory Arbitration now Hidden on many contracts consumer sign. Then read law makers oath. If All of congress was sent to jail which most deserve along with many CEO’s Americans can sleep better by replacing them with an Honor Role 6th grader. Who would you trust. The words from Congress or an Honor 6th grader.

Obama is the democratic nomineee because the media forced Hillary Clinton Out of the race fr the democratic nomination. They asked why is Hillary Opposing Obama. Bow they are doing it to McCain. They are calling him Mvaerick. They are asking why is he attacking Obama. They are asking why is he in the elections. They are asking if Race will affect the elections. Of course it is affecting the election already. The media has lready choosen Obama because he has N written all over his body including his face and his voice. Media is choosing gutter men to represent it. Their job is to get people to vote for Obama. They will say any thing and every thing to get people to vote against Obama. This is gutter journalism. I’m an american Citizen who was born in India. I’m utterly disappointed in the way the whites are being made to feel guilty for opposing a black candidate. Obama will probably win. But it is because the whites are being made to feel guilty because of the past slavery. White women are choosing black men to hang out with. White people have to choose Black Presidents. This is Racism at its best. It is all the fault of the media.

Why can’t people name the gutter journalists who are covering the elections for the media. I tried to mention the name of only one journalist who thinks obama can do no wrong and McCain can do no write. He is always Giving Obama A+ grade and MCaain C- grade no matter what they say. Now they are asking why is MCCain not dropping out because no candidate has ever won a race when he’s more then 10 points behind. These gutter journalists like chief political correspondents, Washington Correspondents are saying Obama is 20 points ahead. I do not see it that way. The poll coverage of all the TV stations show most states are red. Very states are shown to be blue. Rasmussen polls show Obama to be slightly ahead overall. But he still shows McCain to be winning in most states. Only CBS polls show McCain to be ahead overall. Even the Zagat polls show most states are red when they cover Presidential races.
Stop this gutter plititics. It is doing the journalists no good.

Obama is disgrace to the human race. He is inciting racidm with every word he utters. He’s lying to the teeth. He is a Muslim. He goes to th terrorists countries like Kenya and wears Muslim garbs. His friends have criminal records. May be one friend. His pastors are spitting poison with every word they speak. But no body can say any thing. Only Obama can do it. No body can say anything that is anti-obama. Every body turns against him. One Clinton election worker said Obama is where he is because of her race. She was made to resign. Why is it not supposed to be an issue. It is affecting the race. Why can’t people say it is affecting the election. I’m a very proud American. I’ve been in this country most of my life and have not been to the country, I was born in, ever since I came her. I’m very patriotic. But I see racism in this election. I want to talk about it and try to reverse the racism and to get people to stop voting for Obama because he’s black. Look at what he stands for. Would his political appointees be blacks from Africa or blacks from USA. I’ve been swindled by a black from West Africa (ghana) Ulovia who uses the ulovia@yahoo.com. He pretended to be a woman who was in love with me and was in need for money. I helped him. When I stopped he said I was a fool who made him rich. He said he has a web Site http://www.kwakubonsam.com / This site is listed in most search engines including Google. He claims to give spiritual advice. Ulovia said he’ll Voodoo me. This is what blacks from Africa are. Voodoo specialists. The day he said he’ll voodoo me my Back started burning. I developed a cough that has persisted for about a month. I’m afraid the Obama blacks will voodoo every body.

You’ve mentioned several times that 13% of black voters is not that much higher than the 11% of voters in the last election. Aside from the fact that 2% of the population of the US is still a lot of new voters, more importantly you haven’t mentioned that according to the census bureau 13% of the country is black. Therefore for the first time in history the number of black voters matches the percentage of black americans. This is a landmark and shows a growing sign of equality, a growing sign of why finally a black man is a viable candidate.

I voted for the first time today. I’m a working, married mother of two. I voted for Barack Obama. I am so proud to have been a part of this election and hope that Mr. Obama carries the enthusiasium and class he has shown in this election with him into the White House. I hope that my children have a more stable economic situation to grow up in. I hope that all people can come together and realize that Democrat and Republican shouldn’t matter as much as the good for all people, the UNITED States of America. I hope for change in our government and I hope for change in the midsets of politicians. We are one country – let’s start acting like it!

i want to know why Obama has been projected to win New Mexico when he is behind..check your facts people! Mccain is leading in New mexico 62% to 38%

I’m still holding out for McCain. In fact, I have no choice but to “hope” (a term Obama knows so well) and pray for McCain.
You know it’s ironic that all of these black people are voting for Obama, the democrat, because the democratic party once was the party in favor of slavery–the republicans were against it.
It’s not so ironic, however, that the large majority of Obama supporters are black…it’s just sad and pathetic.
If it takes Obama to shut up all the crazy people accusing whites of being racists, then so be it. But having a black man as president isn’t going to solve anything except put an extra large flame under “black powah’” and even more racism.
I seriously think that all the southern republican states should join and form a new country…because we’re the only smart people in the country. In fact, they don’t even have to be southern. They just have to be smart (a.k.a. – Republican)!!

I was surprised by the Vote in Louisiana..because of all the trouble that came and went there McCain won there..then Mississippi…and how Ohio has come out..I just find that we have situations in the process that(either)WARN-or-ABUSE…it does seem that America is “breaking eggs”…so I guess that really the day.

To paraphrase Mrs. Obama; This is the first time I’ve ever been ashamed of my country!!
I am looking for a state that wants to initiate a secessionist movement, or I want to move to another country..
I’m serious on this; never before has money and a lack of scrupels played a roll in the American eletorate.
If anbody starts a secessionist movement, I’ll sell my house, take up arms and move to that state.
It may be I’ll have to hunt and gather food, but at least the shame of this election will be washed from my soul!
Bout all I can say is; “shame on you America” It’ll take several months if not years for that to sink in,,,,but you’ll figure it out eventually…
Having a racist, certifiable, lying, sack of scheit for a president is not a desireable prospect.
God bless you all. If I can break away from the union,,,,I will!!

You have to remember WHY Obama seems so polished and poised. You see, he’s a trained trial lawyer from the best law school in the country (Harvard); But he’s not experienced.
He gives a good speech and shakes a good hand and plays pretty good hoops,,,,,,,,but that’s about it!
DON’T EVEN LET THIS GUY BACK-OUT ON HIS HEALTH CARE AND MIDDLE CLASS TAX PROMISES HE’S MADE. REMEBER HIS MANTRA; “MIDDLE CLASS TAX CUTS; HEALTH CARE FOR ALL!”

HE WILL HAVE NO PROBLEM ENACTING HIS MIDDLE CLASS TAX REFORM, AND HIS HEALTH CARE CHANGE.
AMERICA,,,,YOU MUST HOLD HIS FEET TO THE FIRE AND DEMAND HE KEEP HIS WORD!
NOTHING LESS THEN HE’LL BE A FAILURE; THOUGH HE’S A LYING BASTA RD SO, NOTHING WILL SURPRISE ME WITH THIS CAT!!~

Congratulations to President-elect Barak Obama, and to the country which gives us the right to vote in a peaceful process.
Senator John McCain was very eloquent in his concession speech.
