LIVE DEBATE BLOG

10:35 pm ET: Obama also closes well.  A strong debate all around — for both candidates, Bob and Joe.  Believe it or not, the next stop for the live blog is November 4 — Election Day.  We’ll see you then — when the polls, debates, and pundits make way for your votes.  We eagerly await your decision.

10:29 pm ET: The "long line of McCains" mark a slightly emotional, and probably effective, close.

No big slips for Obama — measured against that standard, another great night for him.

I’m wishing we had had three debates this good — maybe Joe the Plumber should have been called a few weeks ago . . .

10:23 pm ET: McCain gets a voucher plug in too, just for good measure.

And wow this has been a really interesting debate. If this had been the first, and not the third, I could see more impact for McCain. Plenty of distinctions drawn this evening.

10:20 pm ET: From ABC’s Teddy Davis: McCain was wrong to state that small businessman "Joe the Plumber" would end up paying a fine if he refused to provide his workers with health insurance under Barack Obama’s health-care plan.

Under the Obama plan, small businesses are exempted from a requirement imposed on large companies that they contribute to a national health fund if they fail to make "a meaningful contribution" to their employees’ health care costs.

10:18 pm ET: The post-debate polls should be fascinating. My sense is that McCain has done much of what he needed to do tonight — that may not matter for the race, but it’s a key hurdle. If the polls show a big Obama win — that’s telling in itself.

10:12 pm ET: McCain: "I don’t know how you vote present on something like that." He’s painting the portrait tonight . . .

Obama’s response on the "life-saving treatments" question just missed the mark, it seems to me.

10:09 pm ET: If you’re curious about Joe the plumber, my ABC colleague Jake Tapper did a thorough write-up of the exchange he had with Obama yesterday.

10:06 pm ET: Almost a really interesting Roe v. Wade answer. "I would never . . . " impose a litmus test, McCain says. He didn’t follow with the typical code words a conservative candidate gives. Instead, he turns to the Gang of 14.

Sen. Obama most definitely did not vote against Justice Breyer. He was not in the Senate at the time. Clearly Obama misspoke.

10 pm ET: ABC’s Matt Jaffe notes that Joe Biden likes to call John McCain’s healthcare plan "cockamamie." Biden has recently argued that Petraeus – despite not saying as much – has essentially implemented Biden’s Iraq outline. (Which was NOT a partition of the country, for the record.)

9:57 pm ET: Noticing the eyes — McCain looking right at the camera as he explains his plans, McCain looking at the moderator. A little thing that helps Sen. Obama look presidential. John McCain only looks at the camera when he talks to Joe the plumber (who has officially gotten way too much air time).

Sen. Obama’s plan is NOT single-payer.

9:51 pm ET: Drilling is a McCain comfort zone — and he gets at it by attacking Obama’s "words."

He’s painting a broad portrait, without saying the words, that you just can’t trust Barack Obama — that his promise is based on something false, or at least faulty.

9:49 pm ET: More than halfway home — clearly McCain isn’t afraid of being aggressive, seated at a table or no.

9:48 pm ET: From ABC’s Bret Hovell: By bringing out Bill Ayers and ACORN, John McCain makes an effort to placate those conservative voters who are frustrated that he has not been hard enough on Barack Obama – like the ones who on Friday confronted McCain at a town hall meeting in Minnesota. This feels like it could be a direct response to the five or so people who begged McCain to "take the gloves off."

9:44 pm ET: Obama: "If we have an across-the-board spending freeze, we’re not going to" be able to expand autism research.

McCain attacks Biden in a way that Obama didn’t attack Palin. "Cockamamie idea"! Don’t tell me John McCain wasn’t ready to mix it up with lines like that.

Big Obama smile on the cutaway shot while McCain attacks on spending.

9:43 pm ET: McCain on Palin: "She’s a reformer through and through." "She’ll be my partner." But wasn’t the question what happens if her partner, um, can’t serve?

9:40 pm ET: An odd cut on the running-mate question. But Obama uses it to build up Biden — continuing the strategy of pretending as if Sarah Palin does not exist.

9:39 pm ET: I’m still perplexed about this "all the facts need to come out" thing from the McCain campaign. Why not make it about the substance, not alleged cover-ups?

9:35 pm ET: HERE COMES AYERS — and ACORN too. Wrapped in a Hillary Clinton mention. "All of these things need to be examined," McCain says.

The response: "Forty years ago, when I was eight years old, he engaged in despicable acts . . . I have roundly condemned those acts." Obama lays out the relationship like he typically does. And ACORN had "nothing to do with us."

I’m not sure how to score this one — but it’s a measure of the McCain campaign that so much is pinned to these two factoids.

9:33 pm ET: McCain: "I’m proud of the people that come to our rallies." (That was another Ayers opportunity he didn’t take, by the way.)

This is a lot of time McCain is taking on the Lewis thing.

9:30 pm ET: "Senator Obama is spending unprecedented . . . amounts of money on negative attack ads on me," McCain says. That will not make them stop, or get him much in the way of sympathy. "I did not hear a repudiation of Congressman Lewis." (That’s because there wasn’t one.)

Also — is it weird that Obama said a few times "your running mate," but didn’t mention Sarah Palin? "I do think that he inappropriately drew a comparison," he says, finally, on Lewis.

9:28 pm ET: No surprise that they both use a question about tone to complain about the other side. Strikes me though that they both missed an opportunity to lower the temperature in a statesmanlike way.

And so the attacks will continue.

9:26 pm ET: Say it to his face, Schieffer says. "I regret some of the negative aspects of both campaigns," McCain said. But instead of then saying it to his face — he attacks Rep. John Lewis, which is legit, sure. But he did NOT jump at the opening this provided to the Bill Ayers issue.

9:24 pm ET: From ABC’s Teddy Davis: During tonight’s debate, McCain said that Hillary Clinton proposed the same kind of mortgage buy-up plan that he did.
This is not true.
While Clinton has proposed directly helping homeowners by having the government buy and resell mortgages that are in danger of foreclosure, her proposal would force financial institutions to take a loss.
The McCain proposal, by contrast, is more generous to financial institutions and more costly for taxpayers.

9:23 pm ET: "When it comes to economic policies, essentially what you are proposing is eight more years of the same thing," Obama says.

9:20 pm ET: Obama was asked for specific cuts and he talks "new direction."

McCain: "If you wanted to run against President Bush, you should have run for president four years ago." Clearly he had that one ready — a good line, easily cuttable into a soundbite.

But McCain is still saying he’d balance the budget within four years? This is silliness, and I think McCain knows it. I look forward to his campaign explaining how, exactly, he’ll do this while extending the Bush tax cuts and funding bailouts.

9:17 pm ET: First mention of Hillary Clinton belongs to McCain. But then he starts talking energy independence and a whole bunch of other stuff? What does that have to do with a spending freeze (and didn’t he just spend that $300 billion)? This response has the Palin problem — lots of words, tumbling over each other. "A half a trillion dollars we owe China." Earmarks too in this answer. Over-eager tonight?

9:15 pm ET: Seems to me that the off-the-bat skirmish fell along rather predictable lines. That’s all well and good — but predictable is not great for John McCain, who needs more than Joe the plumber to un-clog the race.

9:11 pm ET: Joe the plumber wins the debate so far. McCain: "I want Joe the plumber to spread the wealth around." But then he said the whole premise of Obama’s plan was "spread the wealth around"? Anyone else lost on that one?

And maybe enough of "Joe the plumber."

Also — ABC’s Jake Tapper notes that he got the last name wrong. It’s Joe WurzelBACHER. Not Joe WurzelBURGER

9:08 pm ET: Think McCain had this one ready to go? Even remembered the guy’s last name. "Joe was trying to realize the American Dream." McCain talking right to Joe: "I’ll keep your taxes low. . . . I will not stand for a tax increase." (That’s a real important distinction for him to draw — if he loses the tax argument, he loses the election.)

9:06 pm ET: Sen. Obama also gets specific right away — looking right to the camera with his bailout package for the middle class. And if you’re looking for the first candidate to draw a distinction tonight, it’s Obama, not McCain.

9:03 pm ET: "Americans are hurting right now, and they’re angry." Populist tone out of the bat for McCain. "New direction." And an immediate turn to Fannie and Freddie — obscure stuff, still, but the right gets really energized blaming Democrats for this. McCain carves out the $300 billion from the $700 billion — that’s a bit of a shift. Like the previous debates, McCain goes from broad to specific right away.

During tonight’s debate, McCain said that Hillary Clinton proposed the same kind of mortgage buy-up plan that he did.

Can we talk about education for a change? We understand the economy is going down the tubes, but what about the thousands of teachers that will be effected by BOTH of the candidates? Every debate has been about the economy, taxes, and going green, it’s time to change the flow and listen to their ideas about education.

Class warfare? Democrats sound the warning about Class Warfare attacks the Republicans have been making for the last 80 years, they’re still fighting against FDR’s programs.

Posted by: Jill in PA | October 15, 2008, 9:14 pm 9:14 pm

Reducing the deficit? It took 230 years to incur a national debt of about $5 trillion – it took George W. Bush and the Republicans only 8 years to more than double it. Give McCain the White House and America heads to the Poor House.

Why can’t we cap the spending that businesses like AIG are doing with OUR monies??
Wasteful spending has to be managed, how will the canidates do that??
Why does the working class have to pay for big business??

When was the last time McCain had a plumber over to his mansion period? Did he have problems paying the bill like many of us retired folks would? You are out of touch, old man!

Posted by: Dave | October 15, 2008, 9:18 pm 9:18 pm

The 700 Billion to “countries who don’t like us very much” has been factchecked to death each debate. Why is McCain still using that figure

Ever hire a plumber? Had a $1700.00 dollar bill in ONE DAY! More than my mortgage payment! If the guy makes $270,00.00+ a year, that’s pretty good.
So you pay more taxes, where is all the rich corporations money? In off shore bank accounts.

Why does McCain keep on lying on prime time TV?
He has no credibility and is absolutely desperate. He insists Obama will increase taxes. Obama has told him repeatedly that 95% will get a tax cut. Unfortunately McCain, by his persistent lies is shredding his own reputation and integrity in the process.

McCain is blaming Obama for not repudiating John Lewis’ remarks? What about Sarah Palin’s incindiary remarks about Obama palling around with terrorists causing people to yell “off with his head?”

JOHN MCCAIN IS A RETARD.

McCain is so off topic and bumbling and desperate. I am so sick of the personalized crap Joe the plumber and John Lewis. This is a 3rd grade debate. Where is McCain’s intellect?
He is so sad.

Posted by: B V | October 15, 2008, 9:28 pm 9:28 pm

Hold on everyone, political issues aside, please just look at their faces while their opponent is talking.
Even if you’re yelling at the screen, or bored out of your mind, you will be entertained.
And Senator McCain, I hear your words but I don’t believe you’re really saying much at all.
John McCain, are you really trying to play victim with the negative ads? Are you kidding? All I ever hear if Barack Obama’s ties with some hippie radical.
You, as well as your party in general need to learn not to throw stones while in glass houses.

Posted by: Shannon | October 15, 2008, 9:29 pm 9:29 pm

McCain has hung himself in this debate, with the short rope that he has been hanging on with, Obama has all the right words, and he is clearly more sincere about his ideas and goals.

Posted by: Lenny K | October 15, 2008, 9:29 pm 9:29 pm

John Lewis said what he said, may have overstepped the line, but he later clarified what he meant – but McCain and Palin and ALL their surrogates have worked so hard to connect Obama to a man, Bill Ayers, who may have committed a crime WHEN OBAMA WAS EIGHT (8) YEARS OLD!! John McCain meet kettle.

Posted by: Bill Adkins | October 15, 2008, 9:29 pm 9:29 pm

McCain has no choice but to go negative on his ads.. He is way behind in most polls..Obama’s Camp only needs is to continue to talk about the issues

If we have been “living beyond our means”, taking out too much equity in our homes, which was encouraged in the last 3 years, what happens to the person who has not over extended, lived within reason and tried to build home equity. I heard someone say the other day,” I wish I would have bought a bigger house.” WHY NOT–The government will pay billions of dollars to bail out all the people who are not responsible and don’t know how to manage money, much as the US gov.

When is one of them going to say: what people need is for there to be a freeze on everything. No one can raise prices and every company must raise people’s wages and this must continue until everyone can afford to meet their basic needs. I think it stinks that Obama thinks he can buy people’s votes and I think it stinks that people think it is okay for Obama to spend so much money and go back on his word about what he will spend to get someone’s vote. What else will he go back on his word on. The bad news is he has spent all that money to get elected and he won’t even be doing the work it will be the people behind him. I have changed from a 30 year Democrat to a Republican because I think it is the best thing to do and I do not want to pay more taxes which is what will happen if Obama gets in. Obama does not have all the right words and if he does it is because he has been coached. All the right words in the world are not going to make him a good president. He justs talk the talk and a smooth talker is someone to be aware of.

Listening to these two idiots argue about attacking each other is as worthless as watching the paint dry on my wall. Now I am a college student and I know as well as any American citizen out there that we could care less to hear these two argue. If they would stick to explaining there policies and explaining how their policy will be the most effective then we as Americans could make our own decisions. Instead we have Obama and McCain sitting at a desk explaining how the other persons policy is not going to be effective. I have a brilliant idea, lets have the candidates explain their policy in detail and then have the other explain their policy. LET AMERICA DECIDE!!!!!!!!!!

Joe Biden talks about the diner that he frequently visits in his hometown of scranton where he talks to the middle class, however, that diner closed down in 1986. Way to go Joe!!!

MCCAIN IS RACIST??? OBAMA IS FAR MORE RACIST!!!

Posted by: KRISTY | October 15, 2008, 9:42 pm 9:42 pm

Joe Biden is a blowhard and full of himself. The crap that Obama states, that he “fights for the middle guy,” is pure crap. This guy is one step away from the trigger?

Posted by: Scott | October 15, 2008, 9:42 pm 9:42 pm

Joe “BIG GAFF” Bidden would make an absolutely awful pres. He only got around 80,000 votes in the primary and as for him being connected to his working class community, he didn’t even know that the hometown restaurant he ‘supposedly’ goes to was closed. Comical.

MC Cain can’t talk about the issues because HE CAN’T all he can do is what has been scripted for him outside of his military experience… the same as Palin.. if it hasn;t been written or rehearsed .. the end result is this horrible debate all due thanks to MCCain and his nonesense

When you’re in a hole, stop digging. For America to elect the Republicans, McCain and Palin, is to accelerate the digging.

Posted by: Bill Adkins | October 15, 2008, 9:42 pm 9:42 pm

McCain is arrogant. I am so tired of his giggling and his “poor me” attitude. I hope everyone in the country is smart enough to see right through McCain and his desparate tactics.

Posted by: Jane 1 | October 15, 2008, 9:43 pm 9:43 pm

What McCain just said, irritates me. He says that he is HURT by what someone said about him being “bad for America” because of the remarks he and Palin had said about Obama. BUT THE TRUTH IS THAT MCCAIN DESERVES TO FEEL BAD. He and Palin said some very racist, derogatory things. They have been teaming up and saying horrible things at their rallies, with primative chantings (which they didnt stop until their ratings changed) Sarah Palin is the worst mistake that America could ever make, and she is affecting McCain negatively. The things they have said and done to Obama. I can’t stand it. McCain just said he had no control over what was yelled at his rally, and he reputed it, but on more than one occassion (before the negative comments and publicity) I didnt see any reputing what so ever? Did my eyes decieve me? My ears? I am not scared of Obama (I am actually scared for him because of the “off with his head” remarks ive heard when Palin is speaking), I think he has great ideas and would do more good for the country than McCain (AND ESPCIALLY PALIN) Obama has a great v.p. in Biden, but why would we as Americans vote for a v.p. who winks at the camera and who feuls the fire for derogatory chants at her rallys? The government does not need this…we do not need this.

Posted by: lesly | October 15, 2008, 9:43 pm 9:43 pm

Fact:
Obama is a Harvard Law Grad as did Biden.
McCain bottom of his class came in last. Mrs. Palin took 7years to get her BA. (We don’t have 7 yrs for her to figure out how to be a VP)
It shows in this debate big time.
Question: Do you want someone that is educated to run this country or do you want Last in the class hot head McCain?

Posted by: Cat | October 15, 2008, 9:43 pm 9:43 pm

Palin’s experience and reformer credentials have been overblown and factchecked

Posted by: TakingPictures | October 15, 2008, 9:43 pm 9:43 pm

I am sickened by listening to Mr. McCain continue to discuss character over issues. He clearly is a very sad and angry man who has no control over his own campaign. Mr. McCain refuses to repudiate the actions of his running mate and the Rovian lies that are the biggest part of his campaign.
Sara Palin abused her own power as her own state has already stated.

Posted by: Anthony | October 15, 2008, 9:43 pm 9:43 pm

McCain is instilling fear like Bush.
McCain spoke at an ACORN meeting as a keynote speaker!
McCain was a member of the “Keaton 5″ that’s why he rushed back to DC when they were trying to resolve the economic bank debaco. He was trying to cover his tracks.
McCain is a good old boy and will maintain the Republican plateform less government. However less government has bankrupted the country.
McCain wants to maitain the fear tactics of the Bush White house. He trys to envoke FEAR. Palin is just as if not more dangerous than McCain. She has her own agenda.

Posted by: Yvonne | October 15, 2008, 9:43 pm 9:43 pm

He’s even said that publicly. But it’s so sad that the Republican party is stooping to that low to say blatant lies to make people believe non-truths. Sorry dude, please look into the matter, it’s true. Obama does NOT want to take your guns away from you, nor does he care very much about that matter!

I am a democrat and really not proud of it. I feel like Obama is nothing but a celebrity. He has junior senator experience in which case the only thing he did was vote on flip flop issues. Palin for christ sake has more experience than that. McCain has the experience, age, involvement, military, and more. Experience, Involvement, and Military, all three beautiful qualifications to me. At least I know when we go to war, which we can see is going to happen with another country, at least McCain is aware 100% of all cost. Being a POW for a period of time, coming back from that, and understanding that gives him the complete understanding of what is to come and the posibilities of our brothers and sisters in the military. IF you vote Obama, you are voting for his wife, they both of the same experience level.

I want to hear a mature, structured honest debate about what plans each of these men have to straighten out this mess that was created over the past 8 years. McLame and Failin’ Palin SUCK!!! Obama is pimp slapping McLame. ALL of you McLame supporters need to open your eyes and realize, ITS OVER. Obama will be the next president and its nothing you all can do about it. McLame will make us a third world country b/c he supports all of Bush’s policies which clearly has the country in its worst state currently. Grow up people, Bush has destroyed this country and McLame will continue on the same path. We as Americans will continue to loose everything we have worked hard for while Bush, McLame and all of the Repubs will sit back and watch us fall while they sit around in the “white” house sipping on glasses of wine and eating cheese. People get up off of your butts and vote for Obama/Biden!!!

It seems we have forgotten about one important issue that has depleted government funds. The topic of illegal immigration has conspicuously disappered from either candidates platform.

John McCain cannot look Obama in the face. What is his problem? He smirks and laughs with these silly looks on his face, but will not look at Obama.

Posted by: larw | October 15, 2008, 9:51 pm 9:51 pm

So Obama is better because he is EDUCATED. Anyone can be educated in a fancy school, so what does that make him? There are people who are more educated than him that went to an unknown college. Not to mention the best education is life experience. Again, Obama has aligned himself with people who will do the work not because he knows all the answers but because he does not know and needs them to provide the answers for him. If you think about it who do you think will benefit from Obama’s help, not those who need it.

Posted by: Beckie Sullivan | October 15, 2008, 9:51 pm 9:51 pm

Obama just looks more presidential – McCain is rude – interrupting all the time – and sitting there with a stupid smile on his face. And god help us if he gets elected and if something happens to him we are stuck with Sarah from Alaska as our president.

Senator McCain continues to attack Senator Obama instead of responding to the core questions and has chosen to side-step these questions. Sen.McCain needs to elaborate on his plans and how he intends to execute them.

Posted by: Marie Hines | October 15, 2008, 9:52 pm 9:52 pm

Look McCain is always attacking Barack Obama because he cannot stand that Obama actually makes a good point and knows what he is talking about. John McCain is all over the place and turning the story around and making Barack Obama look like the bad guy. John McCain needs to learn how to talk and be polite. And the only reason why John McCain has chosen Palin as a VP is because she is a women so he thinks that will get more women to vote for him. Palin to me is just a fake who pretends that she is a model for women. I am a women and the only woman that i really respect in politics is Hillary Clinton. John McCain is lying about Obamas plan and everything. God Man !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chill out!!!!!! I do respect everyone who votes for him because we all have different views on politics and what this country needs. But what you cant see is that John is lying through his teeth if you look at him and look up all the signs that someone is lying you can see it clearly!!!!! He cant even look at the camera or the guy who is talking without blinking like 80 times a minute and jumping around like a monkey!!!!!!!!!! And has anyone else noticed that both of the candidates laugh at the other when the other lies about them??????? Funny stuff . Funny stuff. VOTE OBAMA!!!!!!!! HE IS RIGHT FOR THIS COUNTRY!!!!!! I would like to hear more about their education plans. No Child Left Behind was a joke and rhetoric that was not funded and schools are in crisis everywhere. Special Education is busting budgets in every school district in the country. McCain’s budget doesn’t fund NCLB either, so Sarah Palin can talk about special needs students, but their budget doesn’t include the spending. THe $800Billion plus spent in Iraq would have gone a LONG way in public education. I think fully funding NCLB would cost only $20 billion? I wish someone would ask that question.

Curious indeed.do either of these candidates know about the Bakken find right here in the states? there is our independence on OPEC oil nations big time. see below
e western 2/3 of North Dakota; western South Dakota; and extreme eastern Montana … check THIS out:
The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska’s Prudhoe
Bay, and has the potential to eliminate all American dependence on
foreign oil. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates it at 503
billion barrels. Even if just 10% of the oil is recoverable… at $107 a
barrel, we’re looking at a resource base worth more than $5.3 trillion.
‘When I first briefed legislators on this, you could practically see
their jaws hit the floor. They had no idea.’ says Terry Johnson, the Montana Legislature’s financial analyst.
‘This sizable find is now the highest-producing onshore oil field found
in the past 56 years,’ reports The Pittsburgh Post Gazette. It’s a formation
known as the Williston Basin, but is more commonly referred to as the
‘Bakken.’ And it stretches from Northern Montana, through North Dakota
and into Canada.. For years, U.S.oil exploration has been considered a dead
end. Even the ‘Big Oil’ companies gave up searching for major oil wells
decades ago. However, a recent technological breakthrough has opened up the Bakken’s massive reserves… and we now have access of up to 500 billion barrels And because this is light, sweet oil, those billions of barrels
will cost Americans just $16 PER BARREL!
That’s enough crude to fully fuel the American economy for 41 years straight.
2. And if THAT didn’t throw you on the floor, then thi s next one
should – because it’s from TWO YEARS AGO, people!
U.S.Oil Discovery- Largest Reserve in the World!
Stansberry Report Online – 4/20/2006 Hidden 1,000 feet beneath the
surface of the Rocky Mountains lies the largest untapped oil reserve in the world is more than 2 TRILLION barrels. On August 8, 2005 President Bush
mandated its extraction.
They reported this stunning news: We have more oil inside our borders,
than all the other proven reserves on earth. Here are the official estimates:
-8-times as much oil as Saudi Arabia
-18-times as much oil a s Iraq
-21-times as much oil as Kuwait
-22-times as much oil as Iran
-500-times as much oil as Yemen- and it’s all right here in the
Western United States.
HOW can this BE? HOW can we NOT BE extracting t his!? Because the
democrats, environmentalists and left wing republicans have blocked all efforts to help America become independent of foreign oil.
James Bartis, lead researcher with the study says we’ve got more oil in
this very compact area than the entire Middle East -more than 2 TRILLION
barrels. Untapped. That’s more than all the proven oil reserves of crude
oil in the world today, reports The Denver Post.
—-
Don’t think ‘OPEC’ will drop its price – even with this find? Think again!
It’s all about the competitive marketplace, – it has to.

If Obama is not into spending tax payers money why did he accept money from Fannie May and then give them our(the tax payer) money in the bail out?

Posted by: Jennifer R | October 15, 2008, 9:59 pm 9:59 pm

Wow. I just caught the last 20 minutes of this debate, and Sen. McCain’s attacking, cynical attitude is just not helping him any. Sen. Obama is laying out clear, more detailed plans. It’s a wrap, folks. All he can do is attack Sen. Obama. When you have real ideas, you don’t need to do this. How can you pay for autism and other good causes during a spending freeze? Come on!

Posted by: EM | October 15, 2008, 9:59 pm 9:59 pm

McCain is disrespectful for the way he seems to smirk as Obama tries to address the issues. Obama sits there and listens and with great dignity takes McCains jabs and does not even feed them! He does not attempt to interupt or cackle, he sits there very proffessional and he deserves more respect then he is being given by McCain. I seen McCain tell that old lady who didnt know what she was saying respond to her accusing that Obama is Muslum. Come on he smirled then and proabably loved that he had the oppertunity to say he stood up for Obama, it was publicity thing for McCain and I would not doubt he probably had to take an extra blood pressure pill to keep his excitement contained!!!

Obama’s healthcare plan will cause the good docs to only take appointments from those that can pay more and on time. Obama will have to create an oversight agency to try to prosecute the fraud and to hold the docs feet to the fire. IT WON’T WORK!!! BIG GOV’T MEDCINE IS NOT THE ANSWER!!

Obama, as always, never dissapoints. Cool Barry is talkin way over McCains head. He’s heading to another debate win, a convincing electoral victory, and finally….. Real Change!

How many times can Obama deflect answers, he is the champion at elequont circle talk. McCain is surely the most direct of the two.

Posted by: L Moss | October 15, 2008, 10:00 pm 10:00 pm

How I see it: McCain attacks, attacks, and gets in a snarky last word. Obama addresses issues and gives detailed solutions. These are issues of substance, and McCain is trying to make it a schoolyard fight. We need serious solutions, not a gradeschool bully. Obama is presidential. Who else is sick of hearing about Joe Plumber? It’s a lame rhetorical trick.

I fear the voters. The reasons for not trusting Obama seem more rooted is suspicions and innuendo derived perhaps from racism and not from the facts and the real differences in the candidates.
Things like “I just don’t trust him” says more about the speaker of the comment than it does of the candidate.

McCain is confused on what to say. He has pre-prepared what he will say irrespective of the question. (Just like Palin did in her debate with Biden). McCain lacks knowledge on what the american people are going through. The middle class is the driven force of the economy in any country in the world. He spoke of Joe Biden when it is thanks to Joe Biden that Palin is able to push forward as selected vice president. Biden has solved Domestic violence issues in our country. McCain should go to the points and focus on economy. John is Confused. Please ask questions that will bring him back in line.

McCain is fully leading this debate. Obama is still vague likes his entire career. McCain is showing support for the American people and a future. He has stated his change in policy from the Bush Admin. and Obama is still idiotic enough to continue with it. McCain is protecting the business owners and 100% of the people, not the 95% that Obama says. Obama will ruin our foreign affairs, our troops moral, or businesses and will go in an opposite direction than Clinton. I dont know why people still vote for Obama after all of his rants.

His insinuations about Obama are vile. He keeps misrepresenting Obama & his policies.
I cannot get healthcare for $5000. McCain is so off base. Medicare works, why not have something similar for all americans.
Please stop talking about Joe the plumber & Joe sixpack. ugh! URIAH HEEP = McCAIN

McCain is a liar. In response to every question asked all he does is ramble and offer personal attacks on Obama. He never truthfully answers anything.
He simply rambles on and on about nonsense…even Joe the Plumber knows he’s got no chance with this man.

Erica, McCain has said at least twice that his objective is to create jobs in the U.S. I think h is number was in the millions. Obama said he can create two million jobs. Also McCain said he wants to tax credit businesses that create jobs. It worked in neighborhood reclamation programs for the last few years. Obama wants to give money to the middle class. OK.. would look forward to it, but give me a few bucks and how does that save the economy. Didn’t “W” just try that with the additional tax refund program that ended today? Now who is more of the same?

McCain wants to be POTUS but is taking notes with a sharpie and a legal pad? He’s still stuttering and being disrespectful and just got blasted on the “tax joe the plumber” plea. Obama will be president for 12 years.

Sarah’s baby is only a few months old. She has no idea yet what it is like to take care of a special needs child. Besides, Why couldn’t she care about these kids before she had one herself? If we freeze everything, like McCain insists he wants to do, then there will be no help for these kids, so it won’t matter how much Sarah cares.

Woah, do we want that little pischer with his finger on the nuclear trigger if the president of another country ticks him off — just Make Go Boom! His complete lack of patience and total lack of debating and diplomacy skills are
VERY VERY EVident here tonight. HE is unfit to be the leader of the free world — or ANY world. THERE HE GOES AGAIN WITH THAT GD SMIRK!!!

The transparency of McCain’s rhetoric, as he grasps like someone who is drowning, is so obvious.
Obama has played it smart and safe and is winning this debate as such. McCain is grasping and if this continues, he will be responsible himself for hammering the last nail in his own ANWR tree-made coffin.

Posted by: Frank Ledwell | October 15, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

McCain is so off topic tonight…and Obama just landed a huge bomb on McCain’s attack strategy. If McCain would stay on topic a little better, he might have even the slightest chance tonight.

Posted by: sam | October 15, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

McCain is an out of touch, loves Joe the plumber, and is pretty much trying to salvage what is left of his dignity. McCain can not even articulate his plan and goes of on random tangents that do not answer the issues. He sounds like a whining child. He needs to get over himself and retire.

Posted by: McCain is Old | October 15, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

Posted by: katie | October 15, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

It is extremely comforting to know that Obama can keep a cool hand. It seems like McCain is nervous, on edge, almost as if he were backed into a corner, is that something we want to have sitting in the oval office? The old man will give himself a heart attack, then we can look forward to “Caribou Barbie” taking over?

Posted by: Ryan | October 15, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

Joe Plumber, Joe Six Pack – whatever happened to Jane. And by the way, in spite of the propaganda – Canada and UK have pretty good healthcare – no worries about going bankrupt.

Posted by: Don Seymour | October 15, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

Obama is showing grace under pressure. McCain has huffed at least 3 times, and is not showing poise. Obama’s energy platform is the way to go. McCain has been making allegations, not giving a plan for the future.

Posted by: Matthew Jones | October 15, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

i used to respect mccain before this. he was told by many to attack, but when he attacks he sounds angry, and obama is calm and looks like he knows what hes doing. for the first time mccain looks like an amature at debating. mccain’s overall tone seems hostile and despret to win. barack’s tone is more calm and assertive. mccain’s claim of obama is raising taxes is absurd and getting old. i knew mccain would make the mistake of talking about the ayers issue and accorn, and as expected obama dismissed the issues with ease no metter how hard mccain tried to use them to attack. its actually comical for mccain to attack such a perfect plan

Posted by: kayur vyas | October 15, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

Johm Mc Cain is spending more time on slamming obama then he is trying to make clear statements on what he will do I believe that Mccain is way off the course of relating to the american people, Obama has the understanding of what the American people want CHANGE
GO OBAMA 08

Posted by: joseph trudel | October 15, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

Why is everyone hating on Obama? Are you all biggots? Get real. McCain is another George Bush. He keeps saying don’t tax because of the bad times but think about. What person making $500,000 a year is struggling? None, if they are, tell them to living over their means. And Palin is an idiot. Do you realy want her to run the country once if McCain has an unfortunate event? NO!

Posted by: Jason | October 15, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

Obama has won this debate hands down. McCain hammers away hiding behind the same few false points. How many of us make 1/4 million a year? Obama has obvious thought very carefully through the issues and is not only clear about them from many angles but he actually makes sense, unlike McCain who is twisting ideas to try to make Obama look bad at every turn.

Posted by: jjh | October 15, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

Obama is keeping his cool and responding amazingly. McCain knows hes losing in the polls and wants to get a few PAST PAST predicaments in there to try and get some votes for him. He has been coached on his entire campaign while obama speaks whats on his mind.
I rest my case
McCain is bringing his anger out and attacking obama about his past.
VERY UNPROFFESIONAL AND NOT MATURE FOR A PRESIDENTIAL CANDITATE. It’s pathetic

Posted by: Bill Adkins | October 15, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

Sen. Obama is so far out ahead of Sen. McCain. McCain just refuses to listen to anything, especially the fact that Obama is ONLY going to raise taxes on the super-rich. I’ve heard very, very little tonight or at any other time as to what EXACTLY McCain wants to do. I’ve heard plenty about Obama’s plans, but McCain’s main focus is trying to say anything that might make the American people think Obama can’t be trusted, isnt’ ready to lead, is in cahoots with terrorists – we’re much, much smarter than that, Senator McCain!

Obama talks with big words and is very eloquent. He says the same phrases over and over to reassure Americans who have not done their homework. The fact that he smirks and shows such disrespect toward a man who should be respected is just one sign of his immaturity and inexperience. He talks down to people who don’t even realize what is happening(in essence, they are just walking into the light like zombies). Do your homework. People are going to step away from the stock market when Obama raises the capital gains tax. We need people to get more involved for the market to work. WAKE UP, TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR VOTE, GO ONTO THE WATCHDOG SITES AND SEE WHAT THEY SAY.

Posted by: Marie | October 15, 2008, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

okay. i’m a republican voting for mccain of course.
mccain is attacking well because this is a debate… but i must say that obama is kicking but when it comes down to the basics of politics. he just wants to get to the point of what the american people want to hear not they’re disagreements. instead of talking for 30 minutes of who said what in their campaigns they should have been talking about my mother going through foreclosure, college that i can’t afford, my grandmother and her social security, and my friend in iraq.
overall obama is being mature and letting mccain speak… pretty much being calm at everything that is being said at him… but mccain is beating him with facts and his record. yep.

Obama is winning this debate, hands down. But that isn’t the issue and it won’t make him a good president. He’s slick, he’s smooth and he won’t give a direct answer to a direct question. In fact, he avoids answering questions. The only person who stays on message as good as Obama is Bush. America can’t afford Obama. I’m voting for McCain.

Obama is absolutely unrealistic about what he can do because he illustrates his complete lack of leadership and experience. He’s a complete dreamer. He’s giving people hope that he cannot deliver on. At least McCain has the experience to back up what he talks about. He may not be as elloquent but he talks out of only ONE side of his mouth.

If the most important skill demanded of a President was the ability to not answer questions, John McCain would win hands down. The man can not answer the question with the best of them.

Wow did you seriously just say blah Mccain- that’s mature. Obama is being very rude throughout this whole debate. He laughs whenever McCain says something towards him, was it seriously right to laugh?NO! Whenever Obama cut off McCain it was okay by the panelist, but when McCain did it wasn’t! Go McCain(even though he blinks to much)

Posted by: pinkistheway | October 15, 2008, 10:03 pm 10:03 pm

annie,
i think the reason many don’t trust obama is because what he says doesn’t match his record. so when he says he doesn’t have any connection to acorn (when he does), how can we possibly trust him?

Posted by: dave | October 15, 2008, 10:03 pm 10:03 pm

McCain looks like a confused grandfather when he talks. His dismissive looks and tone is insulting. He talks out of both sides of his mouth. Claims that his campaign does not indulge in negative ads. Yet this has been the object of his national campaign for the last few weeks. McCann says anyone who is associated with his campaign will stop people saying inappropriate comments against Sen. Obama. Yet, when his running mate allows comments like “traitor”, “terriost” and “off with his head” at her rallies, she, and he says nothing.

Posted by: Brian | October 15, 2008, 10:03 pm 10:03 pm

Ok McCain enough with Joe the plumber. He’s repeating himself agian like My Fiends, My friends, My friends. I think he has Alzhameirs. Your own health care plan would give the money back to the insurance companies making your Fat cat friends in the industry money in their pockets while we pay morn. Mccain do you know what it means to be Middle class?? McCain needs to get a clue and go to the VA for treatment!!

when mccain suggests that 43.8% of the working class is merely obtaining a substantial income above the poverty line, how are his policies and political platform measures sufficient? while obama on the other hand is clearly recognizing such statistics and gaps within the enconomy.

Is anyone else noticing the Obama constantly takes the high road and McCain is still on the low road by constantly attacking McCain? Obama is not only eloquent, but he is clear, surgical, and sticking to the issues. I used to really like McCain but I can’t ride with him on this campaign. He’s changed alot.

Posted by: Wisdom | October 15, 2008, 10:03 pm 10:03 pm

Posted by: Andrew | October 15, 2008, 10:03 pm 10:03 pm

McCain is simply attacking Obama, he isn’t giving us anything to work with! He needs to get rid of that smug look on his face and talk to the American people like Obama is. Who wants another 4 years of Bush, we need change and we need it now! McCain wants to talk about attacks on his campaign and how his feelings are hurt … it was just this week he has begun to shish his ralliers, and when people yell death threats at Sarah Palin rallies she should stand up for another person and bring an end to those. I find it hilarious that McCain calls her a role model for women!! She has done nothing but taken us farther back than we already are, trying to flirt with America for votes, utterly disgusting!

As a Canadian I would like to point out that health care is free up here… we do not pay, our provincial and federal government pays for our healthcare. It is actually a right to all Canadians to have access to health care. So clearly Sen. McCain has no idea what he is talking about and zero notion of international policies, especially that of his neighbor.

Time to stop all the B.S.
The things that need to be changed are really very simple. Outlaw lobbying, establish a flat tax for all (you know the Constitution, every man created equal, business too) and balance the budget. These simple changes will fix many of the problems that exist in this country.

Recently, I lost my job as a manager. As I “hire” a new president, experience is the key. I’m an independent. I will be voting for McCain. His resume shows he CAN save our country. It’s a matter of life or death for Americans in terms of livelihood. McCain has the experience (successes and failures) to pull up the economy. I like Obama as a person, but he lacks the successes and failures. Our country cannot afford Obama to “test drive” our government. HIRE MCCAIN. We’ll get more for our money.

At least Obama can speak with intelligence, eloquence, and respect and mccain just looks like a disgruntled old cronie! Oh by the way how long has mccain been in office? He is part of the washington insider, cronism problems, who does he think he is lying too? Someone has to pay taxes why can the people with more money pay them? I am tired of paying more than my fair share to fund the trillion dollar mistake that has contributed to bankrupting this country!

We don’t have quite a Parliament with a figurehead, but we’re pretty darn close. The presidential HOPEFULS can say ALL THEY WANT!!! But, Congress STILL has to ratify it. And, if they don’t, then the President has a line-item veto, for which, CONGRESS can still over-ride. Guess what everyone – our country ISN’T run by the president, it’s run by CONGRESS! Get your head out of the sand.

People are asking about education. What about Obama’s experience in Chicago with education? He spent $150 million, and scores went down. He wants to spend more, but does not hold anyone accountable. The money in Chicago went to teach people about African heritage, and rites of passage. Learning about someone’s heritage is fine, but if they want to teach African heritage, why don’t they talk about the Africans that enslaved each other? What about the Africans that enslave each other today? He sent money to William Ayers to teach anything but American traditions of hard work, and perseverance. He wants to teach people about socialist government being better, redistribution of wealth.

After Obama was finished making his case, McCain snaps back that they should be discussing economics. WHAT!? McCain is the one who pressed and pressed the issue. How childish. McCain is losing his temper and Obama still stays cool and clear headed. Obama is who I want for President – someone who will remain cool and clear-headed when faced with great adversity.

I am TERRIFIED that someone who is as mentally unstable as McCain could actually have a half a chance at being at the helm of the U.S. government.

What is McCain talking about. He basically said that he supports the racist behaviors of his followers . OMG joe if you out there id like to talk to you to.-Obama “ZERO? ZERO?”-McCain
what a idoit. he has the same failed beliefs that got the United states into this mess, how could you vote for someone who’s fellow republican brothers shot us in the face in the first place! He even aided in pulling the trigger!
“he joe your rich”-McCain
-yes McCain give him tax breaks.

It sounds to me that those of you commenting have the same problem that McCain has… Instead of trying to camoflauge the truth, why don’t you just put it out there “You don’t want to see a black man as President.” It’s really easy to say and almost feels good just letting it out. Don’t hide behind “trust” and “smooth talker”, call it like you see it.

McCain winning? No way. Just listen to what he is saying and watch his body language. Obama is looking into the camera and talking directly to us, the American people, not defending himself as McCain is.

Why don’t we hire a President with NO experience, in politics for less than 10 years and NEVER ran a business? Is this what we want in America? Come on, get off the band wagon. We need someone who can MANAGE and MAKE the right decisions. We don’t need someone who talks a good game but can’t deliver. Autism, down syndrome, etc. needs research as these special needs individuals have a chance in life. Have a special needs child and find out why it impacts a parent. We all have passions, right?

I am undecided. I lean towards being a Republican. After tonight, I dont think I can SINCERELY vote for McCain. He seemed desperate. Almost WHINING? I Just needed to hear the FACTS tonight, so I can decide how to vote. I guess watching the debate tonight made me TIRED of the mud fom McCain. Obama seemed dcalm, decent and intelligent with his facts and proposals for turning the country around. What with my concerns of Palin being a loose cannon, and Not Presidential material, after tonight, I will more than likely (75%) vote Democrat. PS. will McCain get off of Joe the Plumber? I used to love McCain.. now he is REALLY annoying me!!!! The more he talks the more % I am gonna vote Democrat.

He is repeating himself and outright lying.
When one of these senators or congressman get caught stealing they should go right to prison. No fine. Of course they steal. Their cronies write the laws. They know they have a “Get Out Of Jail Free” card. This must be changed. You get caught stealing in office. You get kick of and sent to prison. Period.

I THINK OBAMA IS DOING GREAT,MCCAIN IS UPSET YOU CAN SEE IT IN HIS FACE. MAYBE IF HE STOPS TRYING TO ATTACK OBAMA AND STICK TO THE FACTS OF THE ISSUES AT HAND AND TELL US WHAT’S BEST FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, THEN MAYBE HE’LL SOUND A TAD BIT MORE LIKE A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE. WHO WANTS A PRESIDENT THAT WRITES WIT A SHARPIE ANYWAY, THAT’S JUST TO UNPROFESSIONAL.

I always try to stay positive and take the high road, but unfortunately John McCain makes me extreamly angry. He is an embarrassment to the American public. I know he feels that Barack has socialist views, however make your point without attacking him. He is a disgrace! 95% of Americans arent rich!
As a human race we should want to help each other.

His policies of raising taxes and providing excessive programs not needed will end up turning this recession into a deep depression and there goes all of our 401K’s IRA’s and wealfare. Be very careful if you vote for Oboma! He is not a safe candidate for our economy or for the safety of our country. He launched is political career in Ayers living room. A terorist. Rememeber he is part Islam. How soon we forget 911. What is wrong with American’s. How come they are being duped by this smoothe talker? Why don’t you trust McCain a man who gave everything for our country and is honest. Come on people wake up….you need to support McCain and vote for McCain. The last person who told us he was going to give us health care was Clinton and he assigned his wife….So is Oboma going to assign his wife too???? Why is it I hear so much from these two guys about bringing jobs back to the US and the idea of increasing the quota for H1B visas keeps getting floated about? And this is an issue that BOTH parties have been a party to. These are high paying jobs that have been eliminated from the US tax roles. Want to reduce that debt? Bring the high tech jobs back to where they were created. The U. S. of A. Any comments Senators? We are becoming a country that makes nothing with all these jobs going overseas. Unemployment or underemployment is closer to twice what is reported. I am hearing the rhetoric this debate I heard in the other two. C’mon boys, let’s tackle some issues rahter than each other.

I don’t mind taxing them more – as Warren Buffet said, “for 25 years, the Middle Class has been on a treadmill. The wealthy have been on a rocket ship.” Do they deserve new yachts, more tax breaks, and a seventh home next to McCain’s? It’s a question of fairness.

Government is the means a society has to implement social programs that are needed. If you want to depend on business to organize healthcare, education, libraries, fire departments, job-creating programs, etc., on their own volution, look at the stupendous failure of unregulated business we are dealing with. Trickle down free market economics that reject “big” government and want us to rely on big business are pulling your chains. The Republicans really are corporate first, workers and the needy last.

I assume you mean Senator Obama in the first part of the first sentence?
Also, how could you not write about the statement that Obama made condemning Senator McCain’s running mate for not stopping or condemning the “terrorist” and “kill him” comments at the rally. That was the strongest and most intense moment thus far.
