McCain — But Not His Running Mate — Clearly Calls for Stevens to Step Down
"Yesterday, Senator Ted Stevens was found guilty of corruption," said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in a statement just now. "It is a sign of the health of our democracy that the people continue to hold their representatives to account for improper or illegal conduct, but this verdict is also a sign of the corruption and insider-dealing that has become so pervasive in our nation’s capital. It is clear that Senator Stevens has broken his trust with the people and that he should now step down. I hope that my colleagues in the Senate will be spurred by these events to redouble their efforts to end this kind of corruption once and for all."
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin hasn’t been able to utter those words, oddly.
Pols are often careful about these things. Presumption of innocence and all that. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., waited until news broke that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was about to plead guilty before his campaign called for Kilpatrick to step down.
And yet, Stevens has now been convicted on all seven charges. McCain has called for him to resign. Clearly that means McCain believes it’s best for the ticket to call on Stevens, clearly and unequivocally, to should resign. And yet Palin hasn’t. What gives?

Yes it is odd. We are all still waiting for democrats to ask Mr. Jefferson to resign. Of course his doings seem to have vanished from view. I say Stevens, Jefferson and the many who helped this mortgage meltdown would all make wonderful bunk mates in a nice federal prison.

What gives is that Palin is clearly looking out for herself and her political future, since Stevens is still quite popular in Alaska for bringing home the bacon, or, rather, the earmarks like the famous “Bridge to Nowhere.” She obviously doesn’t want to alienate the Alaskan voters who still like Stevens because they’ll help determine her own future! So she’ll continue to waffle as she’s done so well before!

what gives
…is her relationship with Stevens and my guess is that she probably can’t push to hard because he may throw her right back under the bus too..

Palin won’t utter those words because she knows that “if” he wins, when he is ousted by the Senate, she’ll be able to appoint one of her cronies to replace him. Simple.

Why is this surprising? It is just one more point of proof that McCain would be a competent leader (although I believe his policies would be just as bad as they are under inept Bush). But Palin really is a clone of President Bush, who has NEVER held any member of his administration accountable for anything (heckuva job Brownie, don’t worry about Abu Grahb Rummy, etc.). Ever.

This is SO old: “when he is ousted by the Senate, she’ll be able to appoint one of her cronies to replace him.”
You underestimate her ambition. If Stevens is ousted, his seat would be filled by a special election. Now, do you think Palin might be willing to run and get a few years of federal senate time to shore up her very thin resume? Where has she seen that work devastatingly well before?

No Alaskan politician would dare step on Uncle Ted’s toes until it’s certain that the corpse is cold (a relative judgement with Stevens). Uncle Ted has a long memory and an evil imagination.
Uncle Ted brings home the bacon. And Alaskans do love their bacon. That’s why a convicted felon is still a contender.

Palin is far from a reformer.
Troopergate, House Gate, Pipeline Gate, close ties to Senator Stevens.
Palin turned away Independents and moderate Republicans. She destroyed McCain’s chances.

It would have been nice if McCain would’ve stepped down from his office when he got caught up in the Keating scandal. So why is he calling for Steven’s resignation? It wouldn’t be for political gain would it?
Having a felony conviction does not exempt him from remaining in office. I wonder who passed that little bit of legislation?
Now when is Palin going to call for his resignation? I guess as soon as she submits her resignation for ethics violations. What a pair: McCain took money from Keating, Palin violated ethics of office. With this they just might be swept into office. Isn’t
American grand?
And before any of you neocons start with the garbage about Obama I just want you to know that if you read any of his works you would discover that he was thinking way beyond your capabilities at the age of 12.
I’m just hoping that we will elect Obama president next Tuesday.

Yes, there would be a special election, but my understanding is that any Gov can appoint someone until the special election takes place. I could be wrong, so if anyone has information that would correct my assumption, I’ll yield to that knowledge.

No she’s not the top of the ticket, but she did speak before McCain.
Regardless, in her role as Gov. of the state he represents, she has an obligation to speak, no matter what her place on the ticket. She also should be asking for him to step down because it is in the best interest of the people she represents as Gov. It is not in their best interest for him to continue because if he is re-elected, and then ousted, there will be a problem for the residents of Alaska in representation that will have to be resolved.
Posted by: This is SO Old | October 28, 2008, 11:40 am 11:40 am
Here’s what I don’t get about politics in The Peoples Republic of Alaska. They view their natural resources as belonging to the people of Alaska (that’s a socialistic tenet, but I digress) which allows the state to issue annual checks for a couple of thousand dollars to each of the state’s residents.
This year, the Governor also taxed the oil companies and redistributed their income to Alaskans to help with increased fuel costs.
If the State of Alaska is doing so well, why must the rest of us “redistribute” our income to Alaska to finance their pork barrel projects?. The money they spent on the road to nowhere to the bridge to nowhere would have been better spent on fixing up Brooklyn’s 100 year-old elementary schools.

You must not have been reading the news yesterday when the conviction came down. She did speak out after the conviction while she was in Roanoke VA, but did not call for his resignation. She simply stated that she hoped he would do the “right thing for the State of Alaska.”
I didn’t expect her to say anything prior to the end of the trial. It would have been inappropriate and she didn’t.

Why would she call for him to resign or say anything negative when there is still the possibility that he could appeal the conviction and get it overturned? He would then return as the Senator from Alaska to work with a Governor that called on him to resign.
Yeah…that would work well.

Stevens has probably got dirt on Palin. Her house got built by Todd with the help nefarious, unidentified contractor buddies at precisely the same time as that Wasilla Sports Complex AND while the Palins were campaigning for Lt. Gov.
Things that make you go hmmmmm.
And about that McCain character, Blind ambition! His own words from McCain’s book Worth the Fighting For:
“I didn’t decide to run for president to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to become president because it had become my ambition to be president. I was 62 years old when I made the decision, and I thought it was my one shot at the prize…
“In truth, I’d had the ambition for a long time… it had been there, in the back of my mind, for years, as if it were simply a symptom of my natural restlessness.”

” . . I hope that my colleagues in the Senate will be spurred by these events to redouble their efforts to end this kind of corruption once and for all,” said McCain.
Well h*ll, he certainly ought to know all about corruption since he was so corrupt in the Keating S&L scandal, but no one called for him to step down. Being as he has always disliked Stevens [for his excessive and extravant earmarks], it’s quite easy for him to speak up and tell the Senate to oust Stevens.
Let’s hear more from Palin, but for some reason, she won’t utter another jumbled sentence in this regard. This is so far behind her now, she has no concerns except for victory [even if she has to share it with the old man]next Tuesday. And if not then, hopefully in 2012 – her small and simple brain is racing at the thought.

Right. Stevens should quit the Senate because he violated ethics laws.
Oh, wait… Didn’t that investigation into Palin’s abuse of power determine she also violated ethics laws?
And come to think of it, Stevens was slammed primarily for having contractor work done on his home for which he had no receipts. Didn’t Palin have contractor work done on her home, by the same contractors who got the government contract to build a local sports facility? I wonder if she has receipts?
The thing is, Stevens won’t even notice McCain and Palin talking. The party is in disarray, with no clear leadership at the moment. The only thing that seems clear at this point is McCain and Palin aren’t the universally recognized GOP flag bearers.
I think its a party just waiting for a Mike Huckabee or someone similar – someone with evangelical credentials but who also can play to less insane Republicans and independents – to seize control.
