McCain Adviser Says Northern Virginia Not “Real” Virginia

It might be a good idea for the folks from the McCain campaign to take a day off, take a breath, and then return to work. Republicans unaffiliated with the campaign tell me the "bunker" mentality there is really starting to hurt them.

To wit: McCain senior adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer on MSNBC today.

"As a proud resident of Oakton, Virginia, I can tell you that the Democrats have just come in from the District of Columbia and moved into northern Virginia," Pfotenhauer said, speaking of Democratic gains in that part of the state. "And that’s really what you see there.

"But the rest of the state, ‘real Virginia,’ if you will, I think will be very responsive to Senator McCain’s message," she continued.

Pfotenhauer went on to make a totally valid point about Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., having to play defense in Pennsylvania, as areas in battleground states where Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., could do well.

"And remember that, you know, you’ve got places in other states like northern Wisconsin, the iron range of Minnesota, south-central and southeastern Pennsylvania, the St. Louis suburbs and the rural areas of Missouri that are very responsive to our message," she said. "And again we’re taking it to them in Pennsylvania and New Hampshire. He’s having to fight to defend there, as you can tell because he’s deployed people like the Clintons out in Pennsylvania. And every speech Joe Biden gives, he says, ‘I’m from Scranton.’ You don’t know what else he’s going to say, but he sure gets that line in."

But the "real Virginia" line — made in the wake of the nominee’s brother, Joe McCain, referring to Arlington and Alexandria as "Communist country" — is what’s most likely to make news, and help Team Obama drive up Democratic turnout in the battleground state.

"Hey Nancy," said the MSNBC anchor, "I’m going to give you a chance to climb back off that ledge. Did you say ‘real Virginia’?"

"I did say outside of north – well, I mean real Virginia, because northern Virginia is where I’ve always been, but real Virginia I take to be the – this part of the state that is more southern in nature, if you will," she said. "Northern Virginia is really metro D.C., as you’re aware, Kevin."

An in-kind contribution to the Obama campaign’s Get-Out-the-Vote apparatus from McCain’s adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer. Nancy Pfotenhauer, ladies and gentleman.

You’re right Vanessa, West Virginia is a completely different state. It also has nothing to do with this story.

This has become a common practice with the McCain campaign… where they find they are losing, that part of America is not real and the people there are not patriotic… Palin said the same thing at one of the rallies… these guys are really desperate..its disgusting…

Obama’s up in both NH and PA by double digits. And attracted 100,000 in St.Louis, Missouri today.
McCain’s the one defended home turf. Obama also has a double digit lead in Virginia, Iowa, and New Mexico.
Leads in the high single digits in Colorado and Missouri.
Leads in Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, and Nevada.
I see a landslide.

Jake — how about you spend some of your time focusing on a pressing constituional crisis, like Obama refusing to reveal his genuine birth certificate? YOu news orgs spent inordinate amounts of time digging through joe the plumbers history, and he is a private citizen, but you absolutely refuse to do any serious investigation into this BC issue, rezkko, Ayers? The world knows that you all are biased, but try to make it a little less obvious.
BTW, there is a lawsuit brewing in Penn, and other states, about this, THIS IS NEWS. why do you ignore it? Are you afraid of Obama?

Vanessa- please re-read his story to see that northern Virginia is not W.Virginia, she was talking about northern Virginia near Washington DC. Yes W. Virginia is a completely different State, but it was not what she was talking about. The hate continues as campaign signs are comparing Obama to Charles Manson now- gotta love that hate mongering Vanessa- dontcha?
This Nation does not deserve this kind of hate mongering in a time when the great people of the US are facing economic hardships. It is definitely time for a change and time to get rid of the Rove style of campaigning. The American people deserve civility.

According to Pfotenhauer, “real Virginia” is republican, according to Palin, “real America” is republican, I think I see the problem, they don’t think anyone that disagrees with them are “real” Americans.
Since only 40% of America is republican, I guess we 60% should move out or maybe they should.

Interesting Thought. ACORN is signing up fraudulent votes — it is a fact and nothing can be done about it says the Democratic Election lady in OHIO. Wow! I think that all of our men and women that have fought and died for “freedom” in America should be able to cast some kind of vote. They have more to say than illegal voters—they gave the ultimate. How would they vote…for socialism? Would they vote for a man that will not show his credentials to the courts, but hire lawyers to fight it. Would they wonder why they gave their lives and the American people let socialism come to America—that we didn’t protect our country. Yesterday, in New Hampshire the Obama Campaign dropped the Pledge of Alliance and the Star Spangle Banner they said there wasn’t enough time…not enough time to show respect for America and those that have given so much. Yes, changes are coming.

Do you honestly thinnk that someone who could not prove he is a natural borm American citizen could be running for President? If so – you really are ignorant (or just plain stupid) – it is not possible, besides his offical birth certificate has already been authenticated.

If Obama were McCain he would be calling on McCain to denounce this comment about the “real Virginia.” But Obama won’t because he’s playing past all the nasty smears, lies, and insinuations. AND HE’S WINNING. When West Virginia is in play – you know the Republicans are in trouble. The comments about Obama having to defend PA and Wisconsin would be more realistic if McCain weren’t defending half a dozen normally Repub. states: Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Indiana, North Dakota, and VIRGINIA.
So the desperation breeds these smears and divisive comments – like the one about the “real” Virginia.

Barack Obama was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii

Posted by: Mike NC | October 18, 2008, 4:10 pm 4:10 pm

LOL! You guys are too funny, and desperate in your defense of Obama’s BC. Obama’s authentic BC, the one who got on the day he was (supposedly) born in Hawaii, has NEVER been revealed. The factcheck one is merely a copy, you do realize it was certified in 2007, unles you think that Obama is one year old? the truth of the matter is, someone running for president is NOT checked for the citizenship, and that is the constitutional crisis.
The lawsuit is valid. And strangely, Obama’s campaign could have solved this once and for all and just produced the document, but instead, they chose to dismiss the case. Strange, isnt’ it? Wasting precious legal resources when they could have just solved it, in an instant?
As usual, the question of many things in Obama’s life: what is he trying to hide?
But , you need not worry, as there are at leat 3 other lawsuits in other states about the same thing. Obama will have to produce somethign at some time.
So, if you are so sure that this is not an issue, why is Obama trying to dismiss it? WHAT IS HE TRYING TO HIDE?
Not just the crime, but the cover up. Just like how Obama lies, lies, and continues to lie, about his relationship wiht Ayers. If there is nothing wrong, then why does he lie?
WHAT IS HE TRYING TO HIDE?
LOL! Corrupt piece of criminal trash, this Obama.

The demographics in Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Colorado, and other states have changed, so that many residents are not native to the respective states. That doesn’t make the voting trends any less valid, but regions in this country have changed, and the GOP doesn’t seem to be grasping this. They can imply that in Virgina the change is only in the suburbs outside of Washington, D.C., but I don’t think that’s the case.
This tendency to insult regions of the country and states is really quite remarkable and quite infuriating. Whoever is elected president and vice president will need to address the needs of and protect all citizens of this country.

Poor Mike, when there was a question about McCain’s citizenship, he produced it immediately. No big deal, right? That has long been proven.
So mcCain, a war hero, who has fought for this country, had to prove his citizenship, then why shouldn’t Obama, who has done NOTHING for this country and who is rnning for the highest office in the land, supply this one piece of requirement for president?
what is the big deal? Just reveal the thing already.

Obama lied on his bar paperwork where it states have you had any citations or parking violations—He wrote NO. He had 17 outstanding parking citations.
Obama lied on the forms to the Supreme Court as Senator. Question have you ever gone by another name—He wrote NO. He lied again, he had another legal name that he went by for years and year. Do you think he lied again on his paperwork, I would have to say yes, unless the courts look into the matter. Obama would get more votes if he would submit his paperwork and have this cleared up before Election Day. He has hired three expensive attorneys instead of producing the documents that everyone says he has hanging around. For a man that says he loves the country, its Constitution it is REALLY hard to believe he will not show his birth certificate to the courts!!!!!!1

But the “real Virginia” line — made in the wake of the nominee’s brother, Joe McCain, referring to Arlington and Alexandria as “Communist country” — is what’s most likely to make news, and help Team Obama drive up Democratic turnout in the battleground state.
“Hey Nancy,” said the MSNBC anchor, “I’m going to give you a chance to climb back off that ledge. Did you say ‘real Virginia’?”
“I did say outside of north – well, I mean real Virginia, because northern Virginia is where I’ve always been, but real Virginia I take to be the – this part of the state that is more southern in nature, if you will,” she said. “Northern Virginia is really metro D.C., as you’re aware, Kevin.”

It is more than just a universal government policy. It is also more or less the basis of most of the world’s religions, which grew out of the injustices people saw in the exploitation of the poor.

As a resident of Virginia (I’ve lived in three different parts of the state, including Northern Virginia) I can tell you that Northern Virginians are just as much a part of the state as any other residents. This is just another ploy by the McCain/Palin team to create a divisive nation. Divided we Fall. United we Stand.
Vote for Obama/Biden! And, might I add that I’m conservative, but freedom-loving and a true Christian (I don’t support WAR and the killing of innocent children. Most pro-life conservatives such as Palin don’t have any problem with the fact that the Iraq war has killed so many people, not just American soldiers. I guess when she says she’s pro-life, she only means for white Americans like herself. I’m praying for her soul.) McCain/Palin are the worst hypocrites.
Keep your freedoms and keep the United States of America UNITED, Not DIVIDED!

Whilst the Obama campaign has concentrated on issues and what they plan to do for the people of the United States, McCain has lurched from one accusation to another, talk about erratic..from experience to reform, change!!!,country first,to name calling, lies, false accusation of terrorism, and finally, the lamest reason, warning against a democratic hegemony in Washington, surely, the democracts will need a strong mandate to make the changes the people of America are calling for..

Being from Northern Virginia (Ashburn), I do have to say that I’m actually very offended by this comment. I’m an Obama supporter and generally a moderate Democrat, but that doesn’t have a lot to do with this. As much as people have been angry with Obama over the “bitter” comments, I think I have the right to be angry about the insinuation that because I don’t proscribe to Republican orthodoxy, I’m not a true part of the community to which I’ve lived for the last 21 years (and I’m 27 years old). The McCain camp needs to get over this idea that anybody that doesn’t agree with them is somehow not a real working American. I work very hard and I’ve earned what I have. My problems are the same as every other Americans’…Republican and Democrat. Stop trying to divide us and come up with a plan to help us…ALL OF US!

So if republicans deplore abortion so much, why haven’t that made it illegal? They have been in control of the congress and the white house for 10 of the last 12 years. They have control of the supreme court.
So let’s see, democrats don’t necessarily believe in abortion (I don’t) but believe in choice. Republicans claim to abhor it and yet keep it in place to use as a political chip.
Basically republicans use the killing of babies to further their political ambitions. That’s pretty sick.

The nasty comments about Sen Obama here (and Sen McCain, though they aren’t the same hate filled tiatribes) are as pathetic as they are ignorant and disgusting. As for the manger comment – 1) it was a joke and Catholics can take a joke and 2) McCain (jokingly) referred to Obama as Messiah. What’s the difference in terms of religious jokes? As a neutral party it seems the republicans only know one way to win, by bullying.

It’s how you divide people:
Whether the statement causes offense or not, it highlights one important aspect of the McCain campaign that isn’t as loud or obnoxious in the Obama campaign: The tendency to separate people into ‘us versus them’. This entire statement by Pfotenhauer defines differences between people they consider supporters and those they don’t. That division is a holdover from the Karl Rove time of “if you’re not with us you’re a traitor, a liberal, a socialist, a (insert any negative description of a person you want here). This shows a divisive mentality which will not ‘unite’ the country.
Obama is saying, if you want change, vote for me. McCain’s rhetoric seems to be saying, if you don’t vote for me, you’re one of those (insert any negative description of a person you want here). One is a message of hope. The other is a message of division. Which do you think resonates better with the voters when facing economic and political difficulties.?
The upshot of it all is Obama has the image of a cool, calm, collected PRESIDENTIAL candidate, whiled McCain comes across as the neighbor everyone loves to hate for being a crotchety old coot who shakes his fist at everyone who doesn’t agree with him. Having campaign staff members who reinforce this image on national television isn’t helping him at all.

I guess what gets me is that majority of Americans have bought into what Obama & Dem’s are saying that the Economy is Bush’s fault. If you really want to educate your self and realize that the current economy is REALLY the Dem’s & Clinton’s fault. Franklin Raines was Clinton’s White House Budget Director, he ran Fannie Mae and made $50 million dollars. Jamie Gotelick was Clinton’s Justice Offical and work for Fannie Mae and made $26 million. Lastly, Jim Johnson, who was on Obama’s search committee collected millions working for Fannie Mae. Greenspan is also part of the problem along with the repeal of the Glass Steagall act during Clinton & Dem’s control the Senate. What gets me is that Obama wants to give $25 BILLION DOLLARS to New Hampshire and the 20 other states facing budget shortfalls, so they will not have to raise property taxes or further cut state servics. Another BAIL OUT program, but this is for states that can’t live within their budgets. Where is the money going to come from OBAMA? You will probably go back on your word about not raising taxes on anyone making less than 250,000. What will be the new number anyone making less than $100,000.????

Obama didn’t do anything to Joe. The media did, and that is only because McCain beat Joe to death during the Debate. Writing meaningless quotes that sound like Bush or McCain said them are ignorant. Third of all, It has been American policy to negotiate with countries we didn’t agree with, but I guess Republicans only use Reagan’s foreign policy when it is politically expediant.

No, Graham introduce a bill that started the deregulation of the Banking industry. Glass Steagall was favored by Greenspan, Goldman Sach partner Robert Rubin…Clinton’s Treasury Sec. 1995,& Sandy Weill’. Clinton signed the repeal. The other contributor to the current crises is the Community Reinvestment Act, sign by Clinton and supported by Greenspan, Sandy Weill & Robert Rubin and passed by the Dems’.
The issue that I still have is the bail out plan that was passed several weeks ago. Why didn’t Congress let the market adjust like it did during the 1980′s. Congress made the RTC company to auction off all the commercial properties that the banks had to forclose on. Why didn’t Congress listen to McCain & other Senators that question the way the sub prime lending companies were lending money to people that didn’t qualify for the loan?
I don’t like either candidate. I think both sides Dems & Rep. have gone way below the belt on all their ads. It is discussing what BOTH parties are doing to the Country. I am tire of not getting REAL answers from BOTH Obama & McCain. That is why I decide to do my OWN research on people that are associated with both candidates. I suggest to everyone to do the same and then you make up your own mind. Remember is you are who you are by the people you associate with.

So is Mccain going to call the Triangle area, not the real part of NC? Northern VA has been a growth engine for VA, much as the Research Triangle area of NC. Both areas are big regions of Obama support. Both regiions are ranked a job creators and desirable places to live.
McCain and the GOP should realize the world and the US is changing. No longer do they wish top down central command strucutres, but amphorus open source architectures.

The minute McCain picked Palin to be his running mate, he lost this thing. She appeals to the most base of the base but that’s it. Her negatives are now the highest of the four. She appeals only to those that would have voted republican in the first place and scares the heck out of the rest of us.

Yes, I do volunteer for an organization that helps kids,& adults with special needs, from Down Syndrome, multiple sclerosis, spina bifida, stroke & autism. “4.) Where is your Senior Thesis?
5.) Where are your Harvard records?”
#4 wasn’t required in 1983 @ Columbia–if that is the thesis you are referring to.
#5 would probably be at Harvard–did you check? Are you implying that he didn’t go to Harvard?

John McCain is not fiscal conservative:
It’s giving away money to the rich, in the hope they pass it to the middle class and the poor.
This is the redistribution of wealth we’re talking about.
We should have a fiscal/economic conservative program combined with a liberal social program.
Get our troops back from Iraq, stop the bleeding in our economy and turn the tides.

This is hilarious … all these people claiming that obama signs are 3 too 1 against McCain in Virginia. If I walk to the end of my driveway , not only do I see my signs – I see McCain signs directly across the street, and if I look left there are more McCain signs. People drive by while I’m doing yard work and point to my sign and give me the thumbs up ! Can you say “Bradley” – ha ha , this is hilarious.

Does McCain realize that if he was elected (which he will not be) that he would have to lead this ENTIRE country and not just those crazy enough to vote for him. McCain should be ashamed of the division he is invoking in this country during our most troubled times. SHAME SHAME SHAME ON MCCAIN.

“Spread the wealth around” is more relevant than an aide saying something taken out of context that has no value in the first place. BHO’s Socialism is what this Northern Virginian hears and will vote against.

This is too much. Now these arrogant elitists are defining who is a “real” Virginian and who is a “real” American (per Governor Airhead yesterday). Thanks. If you all loved your country as much as the rest of us do, we wouldn’t be in the desperate foreign and domestic quandries we’re in currently.

Jake Tapper is completely out of touch with reality if he thinks this narrative of two Virginias is going to hurt the McCain campaign. This is the same narrative that occured in New York State that enabled George Pataki to win three terms as Governor; the “NYC vs. Upstate” battle that painted NYC and its suburbs as fundamentally disconnected with the rest of the State; the “real” New York State. To argue that Northern Virginia is an extension of Washington DC and its suburbs isn’t a “ledge” or precipice, it’s a foundation for a legitimate debate about the changing electorate of the State of Virginia and shows where McCain’s core support is coming from. If anything, this will galvanize his support in the majority of the State by reminding the rest of Virginians about the political ambitions of those who have only just recently started moving in.

Is Obama interested in redistribution of wealth? Is he promoting a national welfare system? I’d have to say yes from everything I’ve heard. There is an easy test for this. Does he want to increase taxes on one man in order to give that man’s money to another man? It is clear that is what Obama plans to do. At least that is what Joe the Plumber was wondering. I am too.

sad that some of the commenters on here are turning literally…the Republican party into a footnote like “loyalists” during the revolution…
you can see it now
“a once fiscally conservative group who was co opted and destroyed by right wing nut jobs (pharisees if you will) …who lost the fiscal…and destroyed the nation by using insults and ignorance and then termed them…”values” while they trashed everything this nation stood for and was built on…
and tried destroying other candidates and Americans who actually had values and teamed them with brains.

nina: I’m pretty sure Senator McCain understands what his duties as President and “Commander-in-Chief” would be. McCain isn’t creating the division, it’s comments like yours that start the ball of division rolling. One person makes a negative comment about someones canidate , then anaother person responds back with a negative comment – and so on and so on. The majority of Americans involved in politics at this point are getting a little more aggressive.Politics can get down right dirty.

Nancy Pfotenhauer is an idiot and is another lobbyist on his payroll. She is worried she will not be able to run this country along with Rick Davis and the others on his campaign. American people are waking up and seeing what the republicans are doing to the middle class. Taking from them and giving to the rich.
It shows with the conservatives voting for Obama because they are worried about Palins lack of experience. All the conservative newspapers I’ve read said what a bonehead pick she was and don’t want to vote for the McCain/Palin ticket because they can’t jeopardize the safety of All Americans.
Republicans are done.

I’ve lived in Hampton Roads for 30 years, and I consider myself a “real” Virginian . . .for Obama. Last week I drove from Petersburg to Lynchburg on Rt 460, then south to Wytheville and back home on US58 . . . about 300 miles. I counted the Obama and McCain signs to pass the time, and the Obamas outnumbered the McCains by 2 to 1. Guess they’ll have to reconsider what the “real” Virginia is.

Response to:

Because it’s really ‘Country’ first for them. ‘City’ is last in the repubs books (at least the books they don’t choose to burn).

Well I guess there’s two Americas according Palin and now there’s two Virginias according to the McCain crew. Do these knuckleheads know what country they are in or was McCain and Palin absent when they taught geography and American history. The more you see them both in action, the more you start to see that they see two types of America. I guess one is of rich Republicans and corporations, and the other of regular folks that work for a living. Given McCain’s background of wealth, owning 9 homes, 13 cars, and a private jet, I guess his “America” is the one with money, the “other” America doesn’t count for them. I’m sure all those that serve this country from the “other” America appreciates what McCain and Palin think about them. This crew needs to be sent packing. Nothing but liars, lowlifes, and dirtbags that would sell their souls to get elected.

There is no such thing as the “liberal media.” I have worked in the media for years it’s full of Republicans, Democrats and Independents.
Although, I’m not a great fan of what they choose to cover most of the time I do realize that they only cover what they think will sell. It only comes down to ratings which equals money.
There are some news media companies that are better than others, but none choose political views over profit.
For those who are unaware of the process let me break it down for you:
The news directors, producers, managers and writers have a meeting everyday to discuss topics that are newsworthy.
They place them on a bulletin board and discuss each one. They end up choosing the ones that the majority in the room believe viewers in their market want to hear.
Then they assign the reporter to the story. The highest managerial person in the room is the news director and he/she makes the final decision. This news director position is held by Republicans, Democrats and Independents.
Although, I don’t get along with all of them, I have no doubt their party affiliation has nothing to do with their decision.
Afterwards, the reporters are assigned writers who become the reporters main contact person at the station when they leave the newsroom.
Hence, there are no liberal vs conservative news. FOX only cares about ratings and since they think there is a niche that isn’t being covered they decided to go more conservative to get those ratings. Neither network really gives a crap about what most Americans think, just what you’ll watch to get them richer. (Supply and demand)This is a political game played to make simple people fight over nonsense as well as a tool to get you to feel sorry for the candidate.
So this tireless whining from McCain’s campaign and party is just that “a party of whiners” Will someone please burp them, change their pampers and stuff a pacifier in their mouths. I’m tired of hearing the crying and whining!

The Republicans are surely becoming a party of hate and division. Just listen to their tone and message at their rallies, it’s all about dividing America. When they talk about “sharing the wealth”, they are trying to scare people into believing that somebody is going to take away what they have or own. That is so completely untrue and only divides people further. “Sharing the wealth” is about helping those that are struggling trying to keep their homes, put food on the table, and keeping their families intact. This country has an abundance of wealth, yet it is hoarded by the few and corporations. Some even pay less taxes than those with so little. This isn’t right in any way you may define it. If we can “share” this country’s wealth by giving away to Exxon 4 billion dollars to do what they would do anyway, then we can help our fellow Americans too. Matter of fact, that’s who we should be helping, not Exxon who rapes us with their obscene profits. If indeed “country first” as McCain claims, then our people come before Exxon.

Republicans Wake up. During your work day. Who gets the promotions? Usually the guy with the most experience…or “Time in” the job
Both these guys come from the senate, Hell three of the four main guys running come from the senate.
It is time to promote the guys who has been in the longest. He IS the one with the most experience. Hell if he does not believe “this or that as a republican”. He is what his is. REPUBLICANS VOTE REPUBLICAN”
Democrats. Please Remember where the Gov’t has taken us up to this point. Social Security is almost bankrupt. The Credit Crisis, 700 Billion. Do we really want the Gov’t running our Healthcare? Maybe. In the future just not now.. not after spending 700 billion on this present crisis. Democates have a great candidate. It is just not his time . It will come…soon. “does Colin Powell come to mind”?
Independents. Do not forget there are four “Main Candidates”. We need to explore the fact that the two party system may not be the best for Americans. Remember THIS IS WHAT DEFINDS US AS AMERICANS. The right to vote for whom we want.
AMERICANS. Wake up!! The world looks to us for democracy. DO NOT take for granted one of the most important things that defines us as Americans. VOTE!!!!

The Republican party’s desparate attempt to make Obama and his supporters look like socialists is just ridiculous and pathetic. People, can you think? After eight years of a Repulican president, the U.S. governement is buying up banks to offset Bush’s terrible economic policies. We are in a war in Iraq that is costing us trillions of dollars — and rather than be honest and pay for this war as we go along, we are charging this entire war on our national master card. And all Sarah Palin can talk about is how unpatriotic it is to pay taxes. But yet sarah palin wants to continue this war (indefintely). She never talks about how we should pay for it — I suspect she is too simple intellectually to think about that (or too dishonest).
Folks, we won’t have democracy or socialism or communism or anything else if we continue on the path of self-destruction…we won’t have anything because we won’t own own country. China will own us. We are drowning in debt and the Republicans only talk about trickle-down economics — it isn’t working!!!!!
I am sorry that the fear-tactics, bigotry, and small-mindedness of the Republicans still work with some people — thank God most Americans appear to be thinking this time around or we would surely be lost.
I am the 47 year-old married daugther of a marine pilot who faught in Vietnam. I am white, Southern (now living in PA) and Christian. I am proud to support the Obama-Biden ticket.
It’s funny, this elderly fellow who happened to be “white” passed by me the other day when I was getting into my car. He pointed to my OBAMA 2008 bumper sticker and I braced myself for a rude comment or worse. This gentlemen said “OBAMA is going to be a great leader.” I was very suprised, happy, and relived…looking forward to election day!

Some GOP highlight quotes from this week:
Glad to be in the “Pro-American parts of the country”
“Obama pals around with terrorists”
Democratic Virginians not “the real Virginia”
Media should “investigate the anti-American Congress”
Obama is “socialist,” a “terrorist sympathizer”
The Republican-McCain-Palin strategy is Rove strategy of divisiveness and the politics of personal destruction, which only fractures our nation along the fault lines of hate. Its shameful, and doubly insulting because the GOP is always so hypocritically sanctimonious about their concern for “morality.”
Please, sane America, don’t get fooled again.

I live in Northern Virginia and I agree … this is no longer Virginia up here in the old sense … no one here is from Virginia. I don’t think it is so much that they are all actually northerners as much as the fact that they are people without roots, who have lost their traditions, their community. As such, they are kind of lost, so tend to vote Democrat. If you have also lost your moral compass – you see no problem in being attracted to Nobama. You also think people like Sarah are just awful. The Democrats have the barest bones kind of majority in the Senate and not much better in the House. Democrats reflect all views on the political spectrum while Republicans espouse a philosophy kowtowing to the religious extremists, government haters, and jingoism. It is not easy to get a Democratic consensus because too many of them are just as conservative as Republicans. I hope the voters put in a clear majority of Democrats this election so that we can get some real progressive legislation on the books. If this Congress has not gotten much done, it is because every time they pass legislation, they don’t have a clear majority to overcome the Bush veto.

Actually,
Ive lived in the Shenandoah Valley all my life, and everyone here thinks of Northern Virginia as being seperate from the rest of the state. Yes, they are to close to DC. Even people who move out of northern virginia acknowledge this. Virginia in the past was democrat (you just have to look back to Byrd). But I think she was right on with her statement. However, Northern Virginia does have a large population base and has been able to swing the state governor elections in the past.

As a citizen of a foreign country but close observer of your presidential campaign, I would like to give you my completely unbiased view. McCain-Palin is conducting an incredibly nasty campaign and their strategy of dividing America into good camps (McCain/Republican supporters) and bad camps(Obama/Democrats) can in no way be interpreted as COUNTRY FIRST.

I’ve lived in northern Virginia my whole life, and I am outraged that McCain/Palin don’t consider me “Virginian” enough. I guess they think I’m anti-American and socialist because I happen to support Obama, too. Well, I voted for Bush in 2000 and in 2004, and I’ll be damned if I am going to vote for another Republican.

The Republican posts on this site are about such dumb stuff – that it helps explain how they managed to screw things up so badly for so long. The birth certificate – Acorn – (where the problem is registration – not voting) Rezko – Joe the Plumber (who McCain made an instant public figure – not the media) – nothing about the economy – nothing about the war – jobs – taxes – paying for the deficit – nothing about taking some responsibility for the huge war bills they have run up but don’t want to pay – Jesus weeps – keeps them away from the levers of power

What she means is “Real Virginia” like Palin’s ” Real Americans our WHITE RIGHT AMERICANS. I’m a 53 year old white male that voted for Bush..I know I made a mistake which I have to live with. But what I’ve seen from the McCain camp has turned me to VOTE FOR OBAMA. John McCain has turned into a racist or was he one all the time and I just didn’t know it. I’ve reviewed Palins records and it shows that she has a problem in her own state with people of color. Is this what our country is turning into. Make the white man or woman afraid of the big black man. I thought McCain was a man of honor. You can see that this is his last years in office. I say that because by the way he has tried to divide this country it is a man that knows this is his last chance and making it a black and white country may be his last chance to win.

I live in Northern Virginia and I often tell people that where I live is basically a suburb of DC, which is valid As is Montgomery County, PG County in Maryland.
It is not anything but a fact that those outside what is considered a DC suburb is conservative. What is the story here? It’s all just fact.

Posted by: kp | October 18, 2008, 9:00 pm 9:00 pm

LOL. Yeah – the northern part of Virginina isn’t real, its imaginary. That’s right McCain, pretend its all an illusion. This country is moving forward and leaving you and your challenged base behind.

Posted by: nina | October 18, 2008, 9:04 pm 9:04 pm

now we’re told that people who live in the northern part of Virginia aren’t really Virginian? (“That’s just metro DC” — is that code for “black”?) Yikes!
Posted by: Sally in Dallas | Oct 18, 2008 8:01:56 PM
Sally, I’m registered Democrat & no fan of McCain/Palin, but I have to point out that the “metro DC” comment refers the the tremendous urban sprawl that has occurred in NoVA. Counties that were rural just a couple of decades ago are now an asphalt jungle that stretches from DC almost all the way to the West Virginia line.
People like me who have moved to NoVA from other parts of the country are not native Virginians, so we’re not “real” Virginians according to some.
I guess choosing to live somewhere that feels “right” has become less American than never leaving the area you were born in.

Isabelle:
If you yourself had any working knowledge of the way Congress works, you would know that Democrats do not have a Veto-proof majority and, unlike Republicans, the Democrats often do split on major issues. As a result the Republicans have been largely successful since 2006 in preventing enactment of major Democratic initiatives. The “same song and dance”? Look at the campaign in 2004 and you will see the same canard about “Acorn.” You will find the “swift-boat” campaign to destroy Kerry and cost him the election. You will find the same smear tactics that outright declare Democrats a danger to the country. Own it will you please??? Democrats have not traditionally resorted to impugning the very patriotism of their opponents, and yet it is GOP stock and trade. Surely you cannot deny this? Or perhaps you can. Perhaps you too think the world if flat, that if you repeat a lie endlessly it becomes true, that up is down, that black is white, that torture is due process, that Democrats are traitors or terrorists, that when a white Republican introduces Obama as “HUSSEIN” and goes on to claim that he’s not “not like us” that there is no racism or xenophobia, that tax cuts for the wealthiest is a fare shake for the plumbers of this country, and that tax cuts for the less fortunate is “welfare.” But please remember, REALITY is in no way obligated to conform to your delusions. And hopefully the American public will this time refuse to indulge your self-serving fantasies. Oh, and by the way, I’m not a Democrat.

I am a proud Republican, and today I am ashamed of John McCain. I implore all Republicans who are repulsed by this cesspool of a campaign to call John McCain and urge him to stop these attacks. Republican values of low taxes and small government can win the election, but only if John McCain cleans up his campaign and reins in his out-of-control surrogates. If he does not, I encourage all Republicans who like me cannot vote for Obama for ideological reasons, to vote — like I am — for Bob Barr. Shame on you, John McCain. You are destroying the Republican Party.

I am from Richmond and live in Northern Virginia. I guess that qualifies me as a “real Virginian” according to the McCain Campaign. As a “real Virginian”, I find McCain’s message to be a load of garbage. He keeps talking about his record, but as far as I can tell, his record is nothing to brag about. For the Iraq war, for deregulation in the economy. For tax cuts for the rich and big corporations. For a mental lightweight for Vice President. For adultery. For being too easily agitated and losing his cool. I am tired of typing.

As someone who has supported Bob Barr from the beginning of his presidential campaign, it is heartening to see that there are some Republicans who are taking a second look at John McCain and realizing that he is not the face of the true Republican Party. John McCain won the nomination of the Republican Party based upon winning Florida by about 36%. The pundits declared him the winner and, because he was the media darling of the Republicans, they crowned him the Republican nominee. When Bob Barr announced he was running as an independent candidate, we received a lot of hate mail about how we could possibly damage the Republican Party during this election. In the last few days, these Republicans are seeing that it is John McCain and Sarah Palin who have hijacked the Republican Party and destroying the Grand Old Party. First, McCain could have made a stand against the $750 billion bailout, but he chose instead to answer to his friends on Wall Street. McCain could have won the election on this basis alone. Second, he chose as his running mate a woman who is not by any measure ready to be President. Third, he has set aside his personal integrity to run a campaign that is the nastiest campaign in Presidential history. The most horrific part of the campaign is not the robocalls or the inciting of hatred and bigotry at the rallies, but instead the questioning of the patriotism of Americans. This is not what the Grand Old Party is about. I can think of nothing that will awaken Americans more than having their patriotism questioned. This will mark the death knell of the McCain campaign. Please, if you are a Republican, come on over to Bob Barr. You don’t have to vote for Obama; you can make a statement and vote for Barr. Come on over and join the rest of us who do share your values.

It’s not just Virginia where there are real citizens or not. Look at Alaska. Sarah Palin gives out oil dividend/welfare checks to every man, woman and child, working or not, tax paying or not. In the rest of America that is WELFARE or communism or marxism at least. But in Alaska it is not. Oh, I almost forgot her husband was in that Independence party for Alaska and she sent them a video message of support this year. Maybe Sarah thinks Alaska is different from America. It is great she puts ‘Country First’ and gives the ‘maybe’ pipeline contract to a Canadian company. Yep, you betcha country first means Canada in Alaska.

Bill, this ‘story’ took flight as it came out of the mouth of a McCain advisor. The liberals had nothing to do with it, she walked right into the burning building herself. Jeez, what’s it going to take to get his people to think before they open their pie holes. I’m a liberal, I’m a school teacher, I am not a socialist and I suspect that most of the people using the term don’t actually understand it. It’s pathetic that you have to result to the ‘if you don’t agree with me, you’re not American’ line of rhetoric. Whatever happened to the American precept that “I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Isn’t that what our country is all about?

Hummm! Sarah Palin might have a plan for America. Let’s see, if we fracture the country in pieces like Pro- America and Anti-America that would greatly help “Alaska Independence Party” in its effort to have an Alaska free from the United States. She is aware of this motto: “Divided we are weak, together we are strong”. Therefore, she would like to weaken America in bid to achieve her personal goal. “I HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE” Sarah Palin said in reference to her vicious attacks against Barack Obama for the last two weeks.

Republicans are a bunch of losers! plain and simple.During their convention they laughed at the concept of community work; destroyed our economy; took us into a war in Iraq that should not have been; The $10 billion dollars a month that is used up to keep the troops over there contributed to the failed economy; Republicans are bad for our economy!..They are a bunch of people with a few rich ones and the rest pretending to be rich! The economic program of the Republican party..is trickle down economics..Obama is right! Spread the wealth around so everyone can benefit..that is not socialism..that is common sense! You Republicans always throw around words like “Socialism and Liberalism” and you don’t even know what the terms mean..you have scared Americans over the years with these terms but it is not working anymore..because smart Americans are reasoning “If so called conservatism is running our country’s economy into the ground with war, and more war, and the rich getting richer and the middle class getting poorer then lets take another look at and alternative. That is why Obama is going to cream (9 houses and 13 cars McCain). He and his friends are rich and cannot identify with middle class and poor Americans. Heaven help us all and save us from those Republicans! Please!

Posted by: Stanley | October 18, 2008, 11:06 pm 11:06 pm

This has become a common practice with the McCain campaign… when they find they are losing, suddenly part of America is not real, and the millions of people there are somehow suddenly not patriotic… It’s exactly what Sarah Palin said at a fundraiser on Thursday, saying to the people at the fundraiser that she “liked being in pro-America AREAS of this great nation.”
Senator Joe Biden, (Obama’s vice presidential choice), had to remind Miss Sarah Palin that Joe Biden had to remind Sarah Palin that people in EVERY STATE of America loves this country. That EVERY STATE in America has sent soldiers off to war, to fight, and have died for America, and that there is no such thing in America a non pro-American area of America.
Joe Biden also said that he was sick and tired of republicans accusing other Americans of not being patriotic! And reminded Miss Sarah Palin that we are all Americans!
– That is why Joe Biden will be a great vice-president! He wants to bring people together, to unite this country!
On the other hand, Sarah Palin, and the rest of the McCain campaign seem to want to divide this country, and pit Americans against Americans just to win their campaign. It is just disgusting. Sadly, we have seen that the McCain campaign are willing to do and say anything to win. The McCain campaign seem to be willing to tear this country apart just to win their campaign. What type of people do that?!!!

How can a man whose friends are all rich and who owns 9 houses and 13 cars identify with the struggling middle class? You want the answer! He cannot..and that is why Obama is going to cream McCain. Obama came from humble beginnings and understands what the struggling middle class is going through. Do you guys really believe that McCain care about the struggling middle class and people in general? Take the muck out of your eyes. McCain and the Republican party is good for the real rich rich people and those who pretend to be rich. The only difference now is that I notice that the Republicans who pretended to be rich are now planning to vote for Obama.. A friend of mine told me that in a rich suburb in Ohio which is exclusively white and historically strong can be found Obama signs in 70% of the lawns..thats a bad sign for rich man McCain and his Republican losers. People are getting wise and those Republicans who pretended to be rich before are now feeling the pinch and is realizing that the Republican party does not have a clue on how to build the economy of the country. It does not take a Rocket scientist to figure out that when the economy of the country is strong that will enhance a strong military and a contented and happy populace but the Republican party are a bunch of selfish people who wants to keep the wealth all for themselves..spread the wealth around! Obama is right! I don’t mind giving $10 a forthnight out of my check so that every American can get healthcare! but the Repubs would not support that concept..they are selfish! Healthcare ought to be a right and not a privilege as it is now. Heaven help us all and save us from those Republicans!

A vert common term used in NOVA, particularly ampny Democrat Party activists is ROVA (or Rest of Virginia). They feel there is NOVA….and that “other” part.
So…they shouldn’t feign indignation now at “Real” Virginia. It’s just the back and forth of labels that go on between areas of the state that view themselves very differently from each other.

Posted by: Gnarly | October 18, 2008, 11:20 pm 11:20 pm

The McCain campaign is seeking to clarify a remark reported from a Sarah Palin fundraiser in North Carolina yesterday in which the Alaska Governor declared that she loved to visit the “pro-America” areas of the country — implying, implicitly, that there were some parts of the United States she viewed as not pro-America.
________________
This woman maliciously and falsely defiles and debases the sacrifices of all of those brave young men and women who fought and died in the service of this nation. Where are those areas of the country that are not “pro-American?”
Have these people abandoned all sense of decency in their maniacal pursuit of the White House? I, as one who is a new American, am deeply repulsed by these revolting attacks that have no basis in fact or morality. This does not represent the America I read about as a child.

I’m so tired of these arguments about who is really American. I’m from northern Indiana, I went to school in southern Virgina and central Illinois. In all three of those places, I guess I counted as a member of “real America.” Now I live in the DC area and I am apparently no longer part of the “real America.” No one who lives in a city is part of the “real America–” my mother in Indiana has been receiving mail telling her that Chicago is evil. Chicago. Why because a person lives in a great American city, or in the case of the “fake” Virginians, near a great American city, does that person cease to matter? If I moved back to Indiana today, I would still be the same person with the same ideals, but I would be a “Real American.” Here, in my basement apartment, working towards my graduate degree and working two jobs, I live in “fake America.” When will politicians stop trying to divide Americans based on where they happen to live at the moment and acknowledge that EVERYONE, even those of us who live is cities, is a real American with a real vote that is not going to go to anyone who insults them?

As a lifetime resident of the Shenandoah Valley, this statement was accurate. People here think of NoVa as a separate entity, with a completely different view of the world and lifestyle. Our lives here are simpler than the Beltway Bunch, and we’re happy with it. McCain & Palin are EXTREMELY popular here, because no one here wants handouts. We want the gov’t out of our businesses and out of our lives. If you haven’t lived here, you haven’t got a clue and your comments are pointless. Go McCain, Gilmore, and Goodlatte.

B.O.B. I never thought I would defend Sarah Palin, but Sarah Palin joined the McCain campaign at exactly the same time they hired Tucker Eskew – the man who slimed McCain. his family, and his baby in SC in 2000. He will do absolutely anything to win and believes that there is no such thing as too much negative campaigning. His assignment was to coach and script Palin. Every nasty thing that has come out of the McCain campaign has the mark and the timing of Eskew. The idea that McCain would hire a man who lied about and ridiculed his own baby is mind-boggling. But the timing of the slime can easily be traced to the date Eskew was hired. That man has hurt America – and done everything he could do to drive us apart.

Christie, Are you aware that George Bush just put together and signed the biggest piece of socialist legislation in our country’s history? And that John McCain voted for it? And that under the Bush Presidency, we have sold our country to the Chinese regime? (They hold almost $400 billion of our debt). Obama is not a socialist – and he is not pushing for socialism. Stop listening to that silly oxytocin addict on the radio.
As I recall, our country was not socialist under Bill Clinton. Obama is calling for tax divisions which are very similar to the Clinton years. Remember those? We were solvent and people had jobs, the money we saved for kid’s college was real, and millions of people were not losing their homes?

Christie you proably are the better of mccainiacs who actually talk about what resonates about voting republican than voting against obama, this tricklin’ down economy aint tricklin’ that much anymore, this stupid freakonomics never were made people vote for republican pre-64 most vote against democrats for the civil rights laws they signed mostly in your part of virginia your pastor decides whom to vote for while we here in north virginia decide for ourselves as well as send our children in harm’s way to protect this nation we dont need to vote republican to be called real americans.

McCain will stop at nothing to quench his thirst for the White House. His campaign has been characterized by a long line of gimmicks and tactical risks… I’m a Soldier and I know a bit about calculated risks, but these are more the mark of despiration. They have, for some time now, resorted to using a play on words to incite underlying fears and prejudices. They then cloak the whole affair by saying that “America is Angry”. A few recent examples:
a. “Pals with terrorists” = this has less to do with Ayers, than it has to do with linking Obama to Americas current image of Terrorism. This is why the confused McCain supporter calls Obama an “Arab” (it goes without saying that being of Arabic descent does not equate to terrorist… but it’s a play on fears that is so convenient.)
b. The two Americas (real Virginia/America): This is devisive… they are calling out to that under current.
c. Welfare: A tag meant to awaken the distain for those dependent on government support… A tab that the middle class picks-up, especially under policies that protect the rich.
d. Socialism: Another play on words that tends to bring another word to mind – Communism. This brings very negative feelings in those that were adults during the Cold War.
e. ACORN: This has probably less to do with the current scurmish (though it wouldn’t hurt if it makes a dent on Obama’s lead), than to have a fall back plan if the race is really close and Obama wins. “Well we want a recount, cause you know that some of those registered voters were questionable.”
ETC, ETC, ETC…
Don’t stay home – Vote for Obama!
McCain and Palin are playing with fire, then they say that they are not at fault for what a “small group” say.

This is crazy. What you all don`t seems to understand is….. This election is not about Obama!!!
We have trusted the republicans for the last 8 years (yes that means Bush and Mini-bush) and look where that`s got us. We the people have simply been raped!!! Not once, but twice!!! The joke is really on us.
They convinced us all the politics of taking from the poor and giving to wealthy is fair and good for the economy. (If your boss gets tax cuts than, you get wage rises and we can create more jobs….remember that promise) If the last eight years have proven anything, it just doesn`t work. Yeah sure you might like the bush economic policies that favour the wealthy only, if you are wealthy….but the rest of us want to balance the books again. Remember the Clinton years…. America was doing great…compare that to today…. Ask yourself has your bills increased? How`s your 401 k plan doing? When was the last time you had a wage rise? How’s your home doing? Can you send your kids/you afford college today? Know anybody that`s been laid off recently?? (Why? cause their job got shipped abroad)….
I don`t want to be lied to for another four years.
All those Republican promises 2000/2004…. heard them all before.
- Cut spending????? = what about Iraq…10 billion a month + more bridge to nowhere programs than in the Clinton years… (Fact)
- What happened to less taxes for the wealthy = more jobs…..?????? We have lost more jobs in the last 8 years since the great depression…all the while the RICH get richer…..according to CNN “Ferrari in the states has got a one year waiting list”….wonder who that`s for? Let’s get real here…..we are getting raped in daylight…..wake up!!!!!
- Health care????? Don`t get me started on that one….
- Foreign policy????? We have lost respect globally and what happened to taking care of business….bin laden is still out there.
- National debt???? we were in the green before the republicans took office, now look where are we….it`s worst than ever.
Not to mention all the lies P bush has feed us about weapons of mass d????? The real weapon was and is the republican economic policies, which Mc Bush supported and still supports…….
Enough is enough!!!!!
I get sick thinking about what has happened to this great country in the last 8 years…..and all you republicans want to talk about is Obama`s birth certificate. Do you honestly think he would be in the senate if he wasn`t vetted.
What about Mc Cain’s ties to domestic terrorist Gordon Liddy or the economic terrorist Keating ( he cost us the taxpayer ….3 billion dollars…all the while sipping champagne and having caviar in one of Mc Cain 7 houses?
Why Obama? Because the people want to send a message…..and it reads……
ENOUGH!!!!!!Time for a change.

Traditionally the Northern Virginia area included Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties along with the independent cities found within those boundaries. According to numbers in the 2006 United States Census, this made up almost 27% of the states total population. If you include the counties south of the beltway which the census did when it calculated Northern Virginia, that number jumps to 32%. It stands to reason that you cannot simply dismiss virtually a third of a state, as not being part of the states “real” population. Quite frankly as someone who’s military father moved his family to Northern Virginia, and where I went to fifth grade on through high school and my undergraduate degree and where I have lived for 24 years, I am offended. Does that mean I am not really a Virginian? The population of many states are changing and growing, you can’t disregard those area when looking at the state as a whole.

Wow Pfotenhauer, I suppose all those 100,000 people who rallied for Obama in Missouri are all fake Americans!
This is shameless. Any McCain/Palin supporters living in that area should be furious that just because the whole state is leaning Democratic, it is not considered to be “real”.
Will the McCain campaign please stop insinuating that people who don’t support them are somehow less “American” or patriotic? This is not the first time they have said something like that. Patriots don’t stand by a certain leader, but stand by their COUNTRY. Who gave you a monopoly on patriotism, Johnny? There are Democrats who also fought in the Vietname War, the Gulf War, and are fighting in Iraq alongside Republicans and Independents.

One Virginia, One America. The only thing that needs to get ‘real’ is the McCain-Palin campaign – it’s all over the place.

Posted by: chester burns | October 19, 2008, 7:07 am 7:07 am

I was born in Arlington about 50 years ago and lived mostly in Fairfax County since then. McCain is absolutely right that, politically and culturally speaking, Northern Virinia is not “real Virginia”. The larger part of the state is southern and has the primary identity of Virginia. Northern Virginia where I lived is more of an extension of Washington DC — everyone who lives here either works in Washington, or works for a federal agency in Washington as a contractor. The area is extremely high in Democrats and in “independant” liberals who tend to vote that way. Different from the entire rest of the state. That other comment about “communist country” is a little overblown and offensive, because we’re not as liberal as Cambridge, Massachusetts, but it’s fairly accurate.
Speaking as one of those un-real Virginians, who has lived in Northern Virginia all his life, I’m voting for McCain.

Posted by: Chris | October 19, 2008, 8:50 am 8:50 am

The reason why Northern Virginia is the richest fastest growing part of the state, by the way, is that it’s all contractors sucking at the teat of big Government. (I should know — I am one!)

Posted by: Chris | October 19, 2008, 8:58 am 8:58 am

GUESS WHAT:
Fake Virginians have the EXACT same power as “REAL VIRGINIANS.” Think about that on voting day, when all of those fake virginians show up, just because you have excluded them from your importance.

Posted by: Vince | October 19, 2008, 9:15 am 9:15 am

More and more, I see where Republicans have a thought process of bringing division amongst the citizens of the United States, rather than bringing them together.
McCain also divides. He even hates the idea of so called “spreading the wealth,” he doesn’t want to see other people who don’t have, progress, but he’d rather keep them down and out, such as to keep the wealthy happy.
How did McCain gather up his wealth? Work hard? Maybe he worked hard at making connections with people who HAD money. One of the ways of which he did that, was to cheat on his wife, and get with a millionaire HOME WRECKER. How valiant.

Posted by: vVince | October 19, 2008, 9:20 am 9:20 am

I love the way the pro-Obama media twists everything Obama’s opponents say while suppressing Obama’s actual comments about taking people’s hard earned money via higher taxes and “spreading the wealth around” to those who don’t pay taxes; and Obama’s comments about people “clinging to their guns and religion”, etc., etc., etc. Cut the crap you pro-Obama media.

Posted by: Doreen | October 19, 2008, 11:24 am 11:24 am

Everywhere and every time they have a chance for a positive response, they choose to insult and divide. The republicans are not suited to lead our country into the future when they imagine class/culture wars within the states based on what part of the state a person lives in. It’s appalling what they call unifying. They know nothing but fear mongering and lies. And they will leave no lie unturned in their quest for the white house.
The only clear choice for President is Barak Obama. The only right choice is Barak Obama. McCain can take four more years and put in a dark and scary place, which is what he would lead us to believe Obama would do if he were President. There’s no excuse for voting for McCain.

What I really dislike about the McCain campaign other than Stupid Sarah is all the negativism. We need to be brought together as a nation and not torn apart.

Wow. I own land in northern WI, lived in northern MN, and now live in northern VA. I’m so confused. Am I a real Virginian? Am I even a real American? Would a President McCain declare me an enemy combatant and have Caribou Barbi hunt me down?

Christie said: “As a lifetime resident of the Shenandoah Valley, this statement was accurate. People here think of NoVa as a separate entity… If you haven’t lived here, you haven’t got a clue and your comments are pointless. Go McCain, Gilmore, and Goodlatte.”
By your own logic, therefore, you yourself haven’t got a clue regarding NoVa, as well as your comments being pointless.

Life in Perspective – I’m divorced with three children, I’m trying to finishing up my college degree, I work part-time, my refrigerators is bare, and I have quarter of a tank that has to last me until next Friday. I really wish McCain and Palin would stay focused on issues that really matter!

Nancy Pfotenhauer, I cannot wait for this election to be over so I do not have to hear another unremarkably stupid remark from your incredibly stupid mouth..How do you continually allow yourself to go on Hardball and CNN and make the case the case for McCain and Palin. They must pay you a heck of lot of money. Don’t you feel like a fool. You sure sound and look like one. I am to the point that I hit the mute button when I see you. Don’t feel bad though, I do the same thing to John and Sarah. Vote Obama!

Posted by: JP | October 19, 2008, 4:30 pm 4:30 pm

When given a third chance to clarify her remarks denigrating Northern Virginia after the election, Nancy Pfotenhauer pointed to the map of still”red” Georgia and said “As God is my witness, I’ll never leave Tara again.”

Posted by: ricky | October 19, 2008, 5:04 pm 5:04 pm

So I guess that makes the Maryland area around DC “fake” Maryland, as well? BS to that and the “fake” Virginia assumption.
As a Tidewater resident, I say that our Northern neighbors embody the “real” Virginia as much as everywhere else. We’re all bound by the same state laws and pay taxes to the same state government. Since when did anyone have to pass a culture test to be “real” Virginians?
Now, let’s be clear about the “nature” of Virginia: the polls have Obama leading in the state. Not just NoVA, but the STATE. Heck, we’ve had 2 consecutive Democratic governors and we’ve got a 2nd seat in the Senate for Mark Warner to take pretty soon.
It’s not just our northern neighbors’ 32% of the state population that turned the state blue. The areas that have gone blue aren’t exactly metro DC territory, either. Now then, Nancy, are those other blue regions “fake” Virginias that don’t resonate with your message? And even if they aren’t, are you going to be any closer to turning them red than you were before?

Being in Charlottesville, I apparently live in “real VA”? (Another stupid comment following the one by Palin. Are they intentionally trying to alienate voters?)
The enthuisiam for Obama here is like no other election I’ve witnessed. The old school Pubs are fading away and there is no new support for them. Democrat’s numbers are WAY up!
We’ve voted for Webb(Dem), former Gov Warner will most likely take the other Senate seat(Dem), and Obama will take the state in the Presidential race!
VA IS TURNING BLUE!
As a side note: Dave Matthews is doing a free show in Richmond to support Obama. HUGE SHOW. Dave is from Charlottesville.

Ridiculous. I’m from NoVa, and I’m a real Virginian.. who is REALLY voting for Barack Obama because of absurd statements like that. When did being democratic become ‘anti-america’ or ‘fake america’ total b.s.! painting american citizens who want change and exercise their right to vote as unpatriotic is pathetic. Kind of like the McCain campaign and Nancy Pfotenhauer.

I don’t live in the REAL Virginia? Then why have I been paying Real Virginian taxes all this time? You know, those Northern VA taxes that end up funding the rest of the Commonwealth’s infrastructure. So much for being against the redistribution of wealth in VA.

Posted by: Margo Eve | October 21, 2008, 1:12 am 1:12 am

I was born in the “real” Virginia. Two of my ancestors were governors of Virginia. I am so happy to be living in “Northern Virginia,” whose citizens embody the ideals of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington and other distinguished Virginians as much – or more – than do those in other areas of the Commonwealth.
In her snide and artificial divisions, Nancy Pfotenhauer only betrays the sub-human American that she is. Maybe Wasilla would be a better place for her to live than Oakton.

First off, I live in NoVA and went to school in southern VA. Ive seen both sides of this “debate” if youll call it that and all you Obama supporters turning this into a “I must live in fake Virginia” drive me insane. NoVA people including the media tend to forget that there are a lot more people in Virginia who tend to be Republican. Charlottesville, Richmond and DC are major Democratic hubs. No polls are reaching the VAST areas who have Republican congressman and Republican voters. Real Virginia means all of Virginia including the Repubs people tend to forget. Just because NoVA has more Democratic support, doesnt mean Virginia is turning Democratic.

To stoop so low in order to get votes.
Next the McCain people will issue terrorist threats just as Bush’s people did….twice… before the 2004 election. It all came to naught just like the Saddam threat.
Remember the Baltimore native, H.L. Mencken, who said: “The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Northern Wisconsin and the Iron Range are responsive to the McCain message? Too bad for her and McC that you can’t even come close to winning Minnesota or Wisconsin by winning those areas. N. Wisconsin has half a million people. The total state population is 5.5 million. The Iron Range has a pop. of 300K out of a total state pop. of 5.1 million. Looks like Palin wasn’t the only McC’s only staffing mistake.

Born and raised in Herndon here (5 minutes from Oakton). The state has long been red, even in NoVA until recently. If you look at the population EXPLOSION in NoVA over the past 2 decades, you’ll see that a great percentage of the current NoVA population are indeed transplants. Virginia may be changing, but she’s right that historically, VA is GOP all the way, and that a major factor in the political shift are non-native Virginia’s. Regardless, presidential elections these days are pretty lame.. this whole campaign-by-sound-bite deal makes it impossible to get a good picture of the actual policies in question. Presidential Election = beauty pageant/popularity contest.

Pfotenhauer is probably too young to remember that the “democrats” from D.C. that’s she’s talking about “moved in” to northern VA (and elsewhere) about 4 decades ago. The exodus from Washington, DC began in the early 1960s, and ended long before today. If anything, some folks are moving back.
The woman says she lives in Oakton, which is about as red an area as you’ll find in NOVA.
